Either a continent wholly or a subcontinent of the Americas, and the northern of the two Americas. Known primarily for the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Panama and its canal and producing and exporting media throughout the world, North America consists of 23 countries and 20 dependencies, with English, Spanish and French being the primary languages spoken by the majority of the continent. It is the third largest continent in the world by area after Asia and Africa, and the fourth most populated after Asia, Africa and Europe. Since the end of World War II, North America has become a cultural and political powerhouse, with its influence being felt worldwide through its businesses, inventions, media, military power and wealth. Note that The Caribbean and Central America are sometimes considered separate entities, Mexico, the Spanish and French speaking countries of the Caribbean, Central America (with the exception of Belize) and South America (with the exceptions of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Guyana and Suriname) are sometimes merged as Latin America, and North America is sometimes merged with South America as The Americas, particularly in countries that speak the romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese) and Greece, although the claim of "America" being a whole continent is not scientifically supported, as North and South America lie on different tectonic plates.
