Characters / Sonic the Hedgehog — Modern Era Antagonists 2
aka: Sonic The Hedgehog Infinite

Go To

A list for the second half of Modern Sonic antagonists, the ones who debuted with the boost formula in Sonic Unleashed. Like other modern era villains, they often directly antagonize Sonic alongside Dr. Eggman. Sometimes they work with him, sometimes they're controlled by him, and most of the time, they either turn against him or become too powerful to the doctor to control, causing them to take the stage as the Final Boss or the main villain.

    Dark Gaia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Dark_Gaia_741.jpg
Click to see Dark Gaia's Perfect form

Born at the beginning of time, this massive monster is the incarnation of night, darkness, and destruction. Sealed within the Earth for millions of years, Dark Gaia is awakened by Dr. Eggman as part of a scheme to dominate the world by harnessing its vast energy to fuel the creation of Eggmanland, though its premature unsealing causes it to fracture apart into countless smaller dark monsters that plague the shattered world at night and amplify the negative emotions of the planet's inhabitants. Sonic also ends up absorbing some of Dark Gaia's power during the process of awakening, becoming the werewolf-like "Werehog" whenever the sun goes down.

  • Alien Blood: It has bright green blood.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Unlike Light Gaia, a gender is never mentioned for Dark Gaia.
  • Asteroids Monster: The dark creatures that plague the world at night? Those are pieces of its body.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: In its first form in both versions, Sonic must attack its green eyes. As Perfect Dark Gaia in the PS2/Wii version, Sonic must again attack its eyes.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Dr. Eggman in Sonic Unleashed. Eggman may have set the plot in motion by unleashing Dark Gaia from the Earth and intends to harness the entity's power for his own plans, but Dark Gaia threatens the world through its shattered pieces at night and upon being reborn thanks to Eggman gathering many of said pieces, it wastes little time in trying to fulfill its Destroyer Deity mission.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Dark Gaia isn't so much a villain as a force of nature. It and Light Gaia exist to perform a cycle of destruction and rebirth on a cosmic scale where Dark Gaia fractures the planet so Light Gaia can recreate it. The problem is that Eggman woke it up far too early, causing Dark Gaia to believe the time of destruction is now and forcing Sonic and Light Gaia to stop it.
  • Body Horror: When it goes One-Winged Angel, four arms sprout out of its body, complete with Alien Blood. Its jaw splits open to reveal seven large green eyes and lots of tongues.
  • Casting a Shadow: When fully matured, it can shroud the earth in darkness.
  • Combat Tentacles: Large purple ones that can form a barrier around it and can impact targets with explosive force.
  • Complete Immortality: Much like Light Gaia, Dark Gaia can never die, as he is necessary for the planet's cycle of death and rebirth. Being defeated by Sonic will only render it dormant until it gains enough negative energy to destroy the earth.
  • Dark Is Evil: Just in the case the name wasn't enough of a giveaway. Played With, however, in that Dark Gaia isn't technically evil, more an amoral force of nature doing what it's supposed to do. The issue is that Eggman woke it up far too early and so it's trying to destroy the world long before it's supposed too.
  • Delinquent Hair: The singular "spiky" purple streak of glowing energy at the top of its head that's running down its back vaguely captures the appearance of a "mohawk".
  • Destroyer Deity: This is Dark Gaia's role in the Sonic world's cycle of creation, purging and breaking the planet so that Light Gaia can recreate it.
  • Demonic Possession: The Dark Gaia monsters can possess others, instilling negative emotions in them.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Lives within the Earth and tries to bring its destruction, was born at the beginning of time, is the representation of night, darkness, and destruction, and is a colossal, immensely powerful monstrosity with a head-mouth full of eyes, teeth, and tongues. Then it goes One-Winged Angel and manages to become even more monstrous.
  • Emotion Eater: It's stated that according to one of the Gaia manuscripts that Dark Gaia is able to gain strength by feeding on negative emotions; for example, the Ice Cream Vendor in one cutscene who was shown sobbing, grieving, and going into absolute despair after knowing that the Earth was split apart.
Gaia Manuscripts, 4:11: The abomination grows strong on the negative energies of the world, sleeping for millennia in wait…
  • Energy Weapon: Its Signature Move is to fire large beams of energy.
  • Evil Counterpart: Of Light Gaia, AKA Chip.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: As usual, this Eldritch Abomination betrays Eggman when the good doctor tries to boss it around.
  • Evil Laugh: At several points during cutscenes and the fight itself, it makes vocalizations which sound a lot like raspy laughs.
  • Eye Beam: It can unleash beams of energy from its eyes as Perfect Dark Gaia.
  • Eye Scream: Sonic inflicts this on him during the final battle and ultimately defeats it by charging straight into its center eye.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: It gains three green eyes on top of its head and has seven more inside its mouth.
  • Final Boss: Of Sonic Unleashed.
  • Fisticuffs Boss: The PS2/Wii version is basically a boxing match between Dark Gaia and the Gaia Colossus.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: Dark Gaia has no real motivation for its actions or characterization. Justified in that Dark Gaia is a malevolent force of nature instead of an actual plotting villain.
  • Go for the Eye: It's all that Sonic can do to take down Dark Gaia.
  • The Heartless: The Dark Gaia monsters are basically negative emotions given form by its dark energy.
  • Kaiju: One of the biggest opponents fought in the video game continuities, to the point it's comparable to a mountain.
  • Lovecraft Lite: Is a Lovecraftian Eldritch Abomination out to end the world, but Sonic can still kick its ass with assistance from Chip AKA Light Gaia, Dark Gaia's Good Counterpart.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: Perfect Dark Gaia has a lot of huge teeth.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Has six arms as Perfect Dark Gaia.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: His elongated serpent-like body seems to likely give off the illusion that he looks to be legitimately "fragile", but upon hearing Chip's highly strained grunts of effort when he's using the physical power of the Gaia Colossus when the two were engaging and tussling with one another purely demonstrates that Dark Gaia has a lot of strength behind those twig arms of his. In certain points of the PS3/360 versions the boss fight, he's chucking meteor-sized boulders as if they were baseballs.
  • Necessarily Evil: Its job is horrible to modern sensibilities, but as Professor Pickle explains, its role in the Sonic world's cosmology is vital in allowing the world to be wiped fresh for its next rebirth. Though it can come off as deliberately antagonistic, it's ultimately just doing its job — the central conflict of Unleashed is that it's just been let out way too early, and Eggman's efforts are putting it together so that it can do a job it thinks it's supposed to do well before it's actually supposed to.
  • One-Winged Angel: Perfect Dark Gaia, where it grows two more pairs of arms and opens its seven true eyes inside its mouth. In this state, it's capable of shrouding the world in its darkness in order to begin the process of wiping out all life on the planet.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: Perfect Dark Gaia has two long, thin tongues on the sides of its big one.
  • Physical God: As an Elemental Embodiment of primordial darkness, night and negative emotions, it's hard to call it anything else. It also shares a rare role with Solaris in that it's capable of knocking rings out of Super Sonic as Perfect Dark Gaia and even with the Gaia Colossus backing him up Super Sonic is still forced to the point of exhaustion fighting it.
  • Press X to Not Die: Makes the player do this 60 times in its Perfect Dark Gaia form in the PS3/360 versions of Sonic Unleashed.
  • Purple Is the New Black: Dark Gaia's energy is shown as purple-colored.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Has many purple tentacles out of its body along with having attacks that include a purple-colored Breath Weapon, is able to shroud most of the Earth in a sinister purple shadow and is by far, one of the most deadliest entities in the series, as it can effortlessly break apart the entire Earth just by existing.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Has been inside the Earth since the beginning of time and constantly undergoes a process of breaking free, destroying the world, and going back in once its done. Eggman opens the can prematurely at the beginning of the game (which is why it explodes into millions of pieces that scatter across the globe and become monsters), and it's back in the can by the end of the game.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Gives the equivalent of a Dope Slap to Eggman upon its revival in the Earth's core and knocks him clear out of the area to fight Sonic and Light Gaia (Chip).
  • Slasher Smile: Dark Gaia appears to sport one due to the eyes above its closed head-mouth.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: It's never clear or known if Dark Gaia actually possesses any kind of legs of the sort since it's body is always viewed from the waist up while it's lower body is within magma. Its purple tentacles also mimic the movements of snakes where even Chip referred to them as "snake-like" beings.
  • Super-Strength: After becoming Perfect Dark Gaia, he can match and overpower Chip's Gaia Colossus with ease, and is the first real enemy since the Egg Salamander, and Solaris that can actually hurt Super Sonic through sheer force alone.
  • Time Abyss: Has been around since the beginning of time.
  • Throat Light: As Dark Gaia.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Perfect Dark Gaia unleashes a giant laser beam from its eye in the PS3/360 version.
  • World's Strongest Man: For the longest time until both The Titans and THE END were revealed, it was the most powerful enemy Sonic had ever faced till that point (though Solaris was stronger). Capable of destroying the planet many times over, and requires both Super Sonic and the Gaia Colossus together to stop it. And even after its defeat, the sheer fight it put up caused Super Sonic to do something he never did with any prior enemy once the fight was over: He collapsed.
  • Your Size May Vary: When Eggman fires the cannon from his space vessel right into the Earth, the primordial beast is so vast that his hand covers parts of the planet. In his boss fight though, he looks much smaller by being inside of the Earth's core when Sonic and Chip were fighting him.

Nega-Mother Wisp (Unmarked Sonic Colors (DS) Spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/negamotherwisp.png
Click here to see Mother Wisp's uncorrupted form.

The progenitor of the Wisps and the creator of Planet Wisp who was corrupted, presumably by Eggman's processes, into a dark monstrosity. Fortunately, after being defeated by Super Sonic, she is returned to her normal self and returns to Planet Wisp with most of the Wisps.

Mother Wisp is exclusive of the DS version of Sonic Colors.

  • Beat the Curse Out of Him: She must be defeated by Super Sonic to restore her from her corrupted state.
  • Continuity Cameo: She helps out the racers on Mother's Canyon by repairing a broken bridge with her powers in Team Sonic Racing and makes a brief appearance in the non-canon Sonic Runners.
  • The Corruption: She's been corrupted into a Nega-Wisp.
  • Cyclops: As Nega-Mother Wisp, she has one eye, on a stalk.
  • Eldritch Abomination: A corrupted tentacled alien monstrosity with two long arms that are tipped with mouths.
  • Extra Eyes: Mother Wisp has three eyes.
  • Eye Beams: Uses them frequently.
  • Foreshadowing: Shadow and Omega's final mission in Asteroid Coaster show plans for something called "Project: Mother", who had escaped. With this stated, not completing this mission will have her arrive extremely sudden.
  • Go for the Eye: Ramming into her eye is the only way to permanently damage her.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Mother Wisp has pink skin, obviously as the mother of the Wisps.
  • Purple Is Powerful: As a Nega-Wisp, she has a purple color. She's also the strongest of them all.
  • Shows Damage: The petals on her eyestalk fall off as she takes damage.
  • Starfish Aliens: Mother Wisp is basically a giant pink space jellyfish.
  • True Final Boss: Of the DS version of Sonic Colors, battled as Super Sonic after obtaining all the Chaos Emeralds and beating Eggman.
  • Walking Spoiler: Almost nothing leads to her existence in the DS version of Colors, outside of a piece of missable dialogue with Shadow and Omega if the player doesn't finish Asteroid Coaster's final mission. Her appearance is a big surprise and can only be found by unlocking the conditions for her True Final Boss fight.

    Time Eater
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/time_eater.png

An Eldritch Abomination capable of destroying time and space, as well as altering time and space in various ways. Time Eater starts destroying history and petrifies Sonic's friends during Sonic's birthday, making Sonic team up with his past self to stop the Time Eater in Sonic Generations.

  • And I Must Scream: Does this to Sonic's friends, as they are Taken for Granite due to it, but implied to still be aware, judging by what Tails says upon his rescue.
Tails: I thought I was dead! Floating without a body in a black limbo... (shivers) I'm gonna have nightmares for weeks.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: "Charge into the core!"
  • Big Bad: Of Sonic Generations, except it turns out to be controlled by Modern and Classic Eggman.
  • Casting a Shadow: Can fire dark energy blasts that immobilize opponents.
  • Clockwork Creature: The Time Eater is basically a mass of purple smoke with clock gears sticking out of it.
  • Detachment Combat: Its Warping Arm Attack sends its arms through time holes to attack unsuspecting opponents.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It is far more monstrous than any other creature ever battled by Sonic and has a bizarre set of powers, including the ability to tear through space-time itself. By the end of the game, it's still uncertain what the Time Eater even is or where it came from. Ian Flynn would suggest that they are what's left of Solaris, or rather Mephiles's malevolent nature, after being Ret-Gone.
  • Energy Weapon: Can fire small green laser beams in the 3DS version, as well as a large laser from its mouth in both versions.
  • Final Boss, New Dimension: Sonic and his past self fight the Time Eater and both Eggmen in the Center of Time, where pieces of various stages featured throughout Sonic Generations float around.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: The Time Eater is once again more of a malicious force of nature, rather than a plotting villain, and has no real motivations for trying to erase time as we know it.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: The fight with it in the console version mainly consists of the two Sonics chasing it through the center of time. Only Modern Sonic has to do so in the 3DS version, as Classic merely has to dodge its attacks until the core is exposed.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: Unlike the other Eldritch Abomination villains in the franchise, the Time Eater is never given an explanation as to what it is. It's barely even hinted at existing until just before the climax of Generations.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: Its perfected form has cybernetic wings.
  • Homing Projectile: Its main attack is this, which gets announced ad nauseum by your teammates.
"That looks like a Homing Shot!"
  • Humongous Mecha: Turned into this so that the Eggmen can control it to erase their past defeats at Sonic's hands.
  • Leitmotif: Has two versions, in Modern and Classic.
  • Living Shadow: Its initial appearance invokes this trope. As the plot progresses, its form takes shape and gets progressively more mechanical as a result of the Eggmen modifying it to fit their own ends.
  • Man Bites Man: Time Eater in the 3DS version will not hesitate to chomp on Modern Sonic after he manages to dodge all its other attacks.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: The creature's final form has four arms, but only in the Console version. The 3DS one has a simplified design to comply with the handheld's limitations.
  • Playing with Fire: Its final, strongest attack in the console version is a massive fireball.
  • Power Floats: Justified in that it doesn't have legs.
  • Reality Warper: Done through destroying time and space. Eggman intends to exploit the creature's ability to damage the fabric of reality to erase his past failures and improve his chances of defeating Sonic.
  • Super-Strength: Able to easily knock out Sonic and his past self and nearly crush them, while holding back, with one arm. Fortunately, Sonic's friends cheering on both of them allows them to get up and defeat the Time Eater.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Shares multiple characteristics with Solaris from Sonic 06. invokedIan Flynn agreed, and wondered if the Time Eater is what remains of Solaris after the Reset Button. So far, Sega hasn't given an answer.
  • Space Time Eater: Its name is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. By devouring the space-time continuum, the Time Eater damages the fabric of reality, leaving only the White Space.
  • Taken for Granite: The Time Eater kidnaps Sonic's friends and freezes time for them, turning them into blank statues in the White Space.
  • Time Master: Can manipulate time and space, either by slowing down the flow of time or erasing pieces of the timeline.
  • The Voiceless: It does grunt and growl sometimes, but is incapable of speech.

    Jackal Squad
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jackal_squad.png
Debut: Sonic Forces

A group of mercenaries led by Infinite hired by Eggman to protect the Phantom Ruby. They were destroyed by Shadow six months before the events of Forces.

  • Dub Name Change: Jackal Squad in English, Team Jackal in Japanese.
  • The Ghost: They never appear in the game. They only appear in the promotional comic Rise of Infinite.
  • Killed Offscreen: They died in their fight against Shadow a few months before he runs into Infinite. However, Shadow's fight with them is never shown neither in a cutscene, nor in gameplay.
  • No Name Given: All of them are unnamed, except for their leader.

    Infinite

Infinite

Debut: Sonic Forces
Voiced by: Takashi Kondo (Japanese); Liam O'Brien (English)additional VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_4139.png
"You may call me... Infinite... in the brief moments that remain to you."

A vile individual who joins Eggman's bid for world conquest in Sonic Forces. Originally a self-styled "Ultimate Mercenary" jackal hired by Eggman and leader of his own "Jackal Squad", a crushing defeat by Shadow led him to start wearing a mask and pursue power even greater than Shadow's Chaos abilities — which he believes he has now thanks to Eggman's Phantom Ruby.

  • 0% Approval Rating: He is hated by just about everyone around him; even his own allies.
  • All There in the Manual:
    • His past as a mercenary and how he was employed by Dr. Eggman were only revealed in the prequel comics.
    • His ultimate fate after the final battle was left ambiguous until the Encyclo-speed-ia came out, in which it was revealed that he and his prototype were "consumed by the original Phantom Ruby."
  • Achilles' Heel:
    • The Phantom Ruby's illusions are powerful, but they can be countered by someone who has a Phantom Ruby as well, and being in close proximity to a Phantom Ruby weakens his own. The Avatar manages to find a Phantom Ruby prototype left behind by Infinite, allowing them to survive Infinite's illusion during their fight with him, and allowing them to ultimately foil Eggman's plan to destroy the Resistance with a virtual sun.
    • Infinite's character bears one perhaps even more noteworthy than the rare possibility of a second Phantom Ruby nullifying his powers: namely, his hopeless addiction to sadism. Infinite isn't interested in pragmatism; his personal agenda is domination, to relish in the fear, suffering, and subjugation of others as much as possible, constantly playing it off as it "not being worth the time" to finish off the enemy. Even after Eggman calls him out on letting Sonic live when he had him cornered, the one person who could absolutely ruin everything, Infinite tries to rationalize it away. Even beyond that, Infinite failed to recognize what he'd inadvertently created when he subjected the Avatar to the same experience that led to him becoming so powerful.
    • The Phantom Ruby can't function without an external power supply of some sort. If all power supplies are destroyed, Infinite would no longer have access to his greatest weapon and be substantially weakened. This one isn't fully exploited, as Eggman had a backup power supply when the primary one, the Death Egg, was destroyed.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: He's reduced to pathetically pleading for his life after failing Eggman one too many times.
Infinite: No, wait! I Can Still Fight!
  • Always Second Best:
    • Episode Shadow reveals that he was this to Shadow. He was the captain of a mercenary squad and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary" until he was dealt a crushing defeat at the hands of the Ultimate Life Form. The humiliation drove Infinite to seek power so he'll never be weak again.
    • His seeming mastery of his powers granted by the Phantom Ruby makes it appear as though he's the only one who could use them. However, the prequel comics reveal that Eggman was the Ruby's original wielder — however brief — and he could utilize it with far greater ease, and when he takes it back at the game's climax, he immediately demonstrates a greater level of power in projections than Infinite ever had.
  • Always Someone Better: He has Sonic's number in hand-to-hand combat, able to defeat him effortlessly. Of course, as the game progresses, Sonic eventually returns the favor.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • The game reveals that the gem embedded into his chest is the Phantom Ruby, or rather, the finalized version of a prototype Phantom Ruby created by Eggman. What happened to the original and how Infinite is connected to said Ruby remains unknown... Unless you play Episode Shadow, wherein you learn that Infinite was the leader of the Jackal Squad Eggman hired to protect his base in Mystic Jungle, where the real Phantom Ruby was being analyzed.
    • It's also left vague on whether the Phantom Ruby's abilities are just illusions, outright reality warping, or a mix of the two. While the villains are revealed to be virtual reality constructs and the obstacles that appear during his boss fights are illusions manifested by the Ruby's power, Infinite's energy attacks and the Phantom Ruby's ability to distort gravity and create Null Space implies that there's more to the Ruby's power than what has been told.
  • And I Must Scream: Never outright confirmed, but strongly implied by the "Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia" to be his ultimate fate — "consumed" by the Phantom Ruby alongside the prototype Ruby. It largely depends on whether or not he's still alive and conscious in there.
  • Animal Stereotypes: He's a black-furred jackal who started off as a thief and later grew to be a menacing villain, a common stereotype of jackals.
  • Apocalypse How: He nearly pulls off a Class 6 when he tries to erase the resistance by dropping a construct of the sun onto them.
  • Arch-Enemy:
  • Artificial Person: Infinite is shown to be this in the opening, as Eggman's latest and most powerful experiment, though he most certainly wasn't always.
  • Asshole Victim: Shadow was cruel to him and his team... but they'd already put their lot in with Eggman to help take over the world and get power at that point.
  • Attack Drones: His red energy cubes serve as these for him, as his main fighting style is to send his cubes to attack opponents, arranging them in various shapes and formations.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He's The Leader of the Eggman Army, and by far and away its most powerful member.
  • Authority Sounds Deep: Has a deep, commanding, echoing voice, and is clearly one of the powerhouses of Eggman's army.
  • Ax-Crazy: He hides it well, but it's pretty clear that Infinite is quite unhinged underneath it all, as he relishes in causing death and destruction. In the final issue of the tie-in comic, when Infinite strikes the Phantom Ruby with his sword, he's shown what he desires most: a desolate, destroyed world, implying that he was crazy even before he gained the Ruby's power.
  • Badass Armfold: His default pose.
  • Badass Normal: The final tie-in comic shows that before he gained the power of the Phantom Ruby, he was a highly skilled mercenary captain. He managed to fight his way through hundreds of Eggman's robots and came within a hairsbreadth of actually killing the good doctor, only failing due to the Phantom Ruby's interference.
  • Battle Aura: Gains one when using his powers, but how it looks depends on the version. In the PS4/XBOX One version, he glows with a red aura and is surrounded by a purple haze that occasionally flickers with red, glitching static. In the Switch version, he has a simple red outline. In the comics, his aura resembles crimson flames.
  • Berserk Button: He does not like being called "weak" very much.
  • Bragging Theme Tune: His theme is essentially just bragging about how dangerous and awesome he is.
  • Big Bad: He’s the secondary villain of Sonic Forces and the main villain of Episode Shadow.
  • Break the Haughty: Episode Shadow reveals that prior to the game, he was the captain of a mercenary team called Jackal Squad, and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary". That all changed one fateful day when he and his squad were hired by Eggman to protect one of his laboratories in Mystic Jungle, where they encountered Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow effortlessly destroyed his entire squad and handed Infinite a humiliating defeat, which would lead to Infinite's vow to become stronger and lead to him obtaining the power of the Phantom Ruby.
  • Bring It: Makes this gesture to Sonic at the beginning of their final battle, right before growing to giant size.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: In his second fight with Sonic, despite still being more powerful than him, Infinite decides against killing him, deeming him not worth the effort. Eggman utterly blasts him for this, and indeed, it comes back to haunt him later as Sonic eventually becomes strong enough to defeat him.
  • Boss Remix: An instrumental version of his theme song plays during the first two boss fights with him.
  • The Bully: When you get right down to it, at his core, Infinite is nothing but a superpowered bully who enjoys flaunting his power and superiority over others. He constantly insults Sonic and his allies, hovers above his opponents so he can literally look down on them, and shows no respect for anyone. His backstory in Episode Shadow reveals that the reason he became Infinite in the first place was that he was handed a humiliating defeat by Shadow and wanted power so he'll never be weak again, much like how real-life bullies are often motivated by a need to feel powerful.
  • Character Tic: His mask appears to be very loose-fitting, as he has to frequently adjust it.
  • Chekhov's Gun: During his fight with Silver, Infinite drops one of the Phantom Ruby prototypes he was supposed to destroy. The Avatar would later find that same prototype, allowing them to survive Infinite's illusion during their fight with him, and allowing them to ultimately foil Eggman's plan to destroy the Resistance with a virtual sun.
  • Classic Villain: He has a distinctly evil appearance, acts as an Evil Counterpart to the Avatar, and is guilty of all of the Seven Deadly Sins.
  • Cold Ham: Despite his calm demeanor and subdued voice, practically every line of dialog that comes out of him is an over the top Badass Boast.
  • Colony Drop: Eggman and Infinite's plan to destroy the Resistance? Use the Phantom Ruby to create a virtual reality construct of the Sun and drop it on them.
  • Colour-Coded Timestop: While not exactly a time-stop, his teleportation produces the same effect as the Phantom Ruby. This is not a coincidence.
  • Cool Sword: The final issue tie-in comic for Sonic Forces shows that Infinite's weapon before gaining the power of the Phantom Ruby was a red sword curved like a scimitar.
  • Create Your Own Hero: Infinite himself would inevitability create someone who would oppose him — the future Rookie of the Resistance, who would go on to be the key player in stopping Infinite once and for all.
  • Create Your Own Villain: He was hired by Eggman to protect the facility the Phantom Ruby was being studied in — then Shadow rolled around and mercilessly crushed him. Infinite was so taken by terror and humiliation that he more or less sold his soul for the sake of power, giving himself over to Eggman to become the Ruby's testing grounds.
  • Cunning Like a Fox: His mask is modeled after a fox's head and he has a bushy tail like a fox, even though he's actually a jackal.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He's an undisputed master of this.
    • An unmasked Infinite is on the receiving end of this to Shadow in Eggman's Facility in Mystic Jungle, which would lead to his Start of Darkness and him becoming Infinite.
    • In Issue Three of the Sonic Forces prequel comic, Looming Shadow, Eggman dispatches Infinite to deal with Omega when he rampages through his Arsenal Pyramid as a test of his abilities. It's not a spoiler to say he won decisively.
    • His first meeting with Sonic has him and the other villains dealing out a brutal one to Sonic, with Infinite in particular not even using his hands. The Blue Blur is unable to fight back at all and is soundly defeated.
    • A flashback shows him dealing out one to the Avatar and his team, frightening the Avatar so much that they ran away in fear.
    • In Mystic Jungle, Silver tries to hold his own against Infinite. Key word is tries. It ended as well as you'd expect, and Silver would've been killed had Sonic not stepped in.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: All those energy attacks Infinite uses? You won't see them in his boss fights. Possibly justified by his need to prove himself stronger, and thus holding back.
  • Cyborg: The heroes believe he was built by Eggman, but in actuality he seems to be this. If nothing else, he has Eggman's perfected artificial Phantom Ruby embedded in his chest and some sort of upgrades that increased his physical abilities.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's one of the villains and his predominant colors are black and white, with hints of red here and there. When his aura is active, his entire body, sans the gem on his chest, turns black.
  • Dash Attack: One of his attacks during the Avatar's boss fight with him has him dashing at the player like a rocket, similarly to Sonic's Homing Attack.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a few moments of this, surprisingly.
Infinite: More ants to crush. I wonder if this world can give me a real challenge.
    (the Avatar slowly approaches Infinite)
Infinite: And as if to answer, the world sends me a trembling child.
  • Deal with the Devil: Issue Four: Rise of Infinite reveals exactly who Infinite once was: he was the leader of a band of thieves before Eggman offered him and his band the chance to work for him, having been given a glimpse of Infinite's own secret desires and tempted him with the chance to see them realized. And true to the trope, Infinite finds out too late he was on the losing end when Eggman decides he's screwed up one time too many and shows Infinite he was just a disposable pawn the entire time.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Sadist and Darker and Edgier archetypes. Infinite is extremely dangerous, but his constant need to relish in the pain and suffering of others screws him and Eggman over on several occasions, such as letting Sonic live when he could have easily finished him off, or killing the Avatar's squadmates, an act that would inspire the Avatar to become stronger and ultimately be the one to foil Eggman's plan to incinerate the Resistance with a virtual sun. His motives also turn out to be due to him being little more than The Bully, reveling in pain to support his own wrecked confidence after Shadow handily beat him.
  • The Dragon: Is Eggman's right-hand man in Forces. The fourth comic that was released alongside the game reveals that Infinite's squad was raiding Eggman's base to make quick cash. Eggman offers Infinite the chance to help take over the world.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Subverted. Eggman probably couldn't have defeated Sonic and taken over most of the world without him. Though Infinite would be absolutely nothing more than a sellsword without Eggman giving him the power of the Phantom Ruby, so it really all evens out. Ultimately, in spite of Infinite's impudence towards Eggman heavily implying a betrayal, it is the doctor that ultimately dismisses him and takes the Phantom Ruby for himself after he fails too many times.
  • The Dreaded:
  • Driven by Envy: Everything he is today is a desperate attempt to one-up Shadow.
  • Driven to Madness: Overlapping a bit with Go Mad from the Revelation, when Infinite tries to avenge his squad's destruction at Shadow's hands, Shadow delivers an absolutely brutal No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, mocking him as he lies broken and trembling at Shadow's feet. The sheer terror this instilled in the mercenary positively broke him, and he became obsessed with obtaining power so that he would never be driven to that point again. Though it should be noted the vision he was given by the Phantom Ruby (a wrecked, desolate world) and that he completely willingly signed up with Eggman to take over the world implies he was somewhat insane to begin with and Shadow just made him more overtly so.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: It's pretty clear he's drunk with power and loves lording it over everyone else and abusing it to no end. Though slightly unusually for this trope, he's more of a Cold Ham. Unfortunately for him, he's so caught up in his own power and believed superiority that he makes serious mistakes that screw him and Eggman over on multiple occasions.
  • Evil Counterpart: Infinite is a dark foil to the Avatar, making the conflict of Forces less of a battle between Sonic and Eggman and more of a match between their allies.
    • Both of them had their entire squads destroyed by a powerful enemy and were belittled and mocked, leading them to vow to become stronger. However, the Avatar wants to be stronger to protect the world and his/her friends, while Infinite seeks power for his own sake.
    • In a meta example, they are both nameless characters working for the main hero and villain, and thanks to them, most of the plot moves forward. The rookie is a custom character who wants to help save the world, while the so-called Ultimate Mercenary "gave up on his face" to help Eggman conquer the world, and took on the name of Infinite for his new identity. This likewise help differentiate Sonic and Eggman in how they treat their allies: the rookie grows and becomes a hero, while Infinite is betrayed (supposedly) by Eggman due to failling him too much.
  • Evil Gloating: Constantly. Infinite just loves to talk on and on about how invincible he is to all his opponents. And, yes, while he can back it up, this trait likewise showcases how much his power blinds him to the potential danger that leaving his opponents alive poses in the moments they do overcome his power. By the time Sonic faces him for the third and final time, he indirectly tells him You Talk Too Much! in their banter.
  • Eviler than Thou: Asserts that he sees himself as this compared to Eggman. Eggman later reveals he had no intention of Infinite being his end goal and already had a replacement prepared from square one in the form of his final mecha. When Infinite fails one time too many, Eggman disposes of him and takes his place without a second thought.
  • Evil Is Petty: His motivation for wanting to destroy the world and seek power? Because Shadow destroyed his squad, defeated him and called him weak. There's also a part of For the Evulz in that as well due to his sadism.
  • Evil Laugh: Will do this occasionally, such as when you die during the boss fights with him.
  • Evil Tastes Good: Tying in with his sadism. During his first meeting with the Avatar, he reflects that he can "taste" his fear, anxiety, and doubt, and finds it "delicious."
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Has a deep, scary voice that contains a noticeable echo effect, though that's likely due to the Phantom Ruby, as his voice before he had his mask was less intimidating, but still pretty deep.
  • Evil Wears Black: Wears black gloves and boots and is one of the villains.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: The mask and Phantom Ruby give him a golden pupil with red sclera. When not wearing the mask, he has a blue eye and a yellow eye.
  • Extremity Extremist: In his first battle with Sonic, he manages to defeat him without even using his hands (save for using his energy blasts), literally kicking him around like a big blue ball.
  • The Faceless: He's never seen properly without his creepy mask on. Episode Shadow obscures his face in every angle possible, even while he's being screwed up by Shadow. However, game files reveal his face...or rather a placeholder for his face that looks incredibly static and devoid of emotion. Averted if the comic tie-in is considered, as it shows his face in full.
  • Facial Horror: He has a patch of fur over his right eye that makes it look like he has a scar.
  • Failed a Spot Check: He dropped one of the Ruby prototypes and didn't notice it and the Avatar dropping that same Ruby later and Infinite not even seeing it right in the Avatar's hand.
  • Fatal Flaw:
  • Faux Affably Evil: Infinite speaks in a calm, eloquent manner. However, it's blatantly obvious that his politeness is merely a smug facade… a facade that quickly cracks when things don't go his way.
  • Feet of Clay: Infinite presents himself as an extremely deadly, nigh unbeatable monster no one stands a chance against...but he's actually a psychopathic bully who's power is literally all illusions. On top of this, he proves to be extremely incompetent, due to putting his sadism over actually being effective.
  • Flash Step: He's quick enough to perform these.
  • Flight: He's capable of flying. Mostly because of the Phantom Ruby.
  • Flunky Boss: After damaging him enough during the Avatar's boss fight with him, Infinite will summon Eggman's robots to assist him.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Infinite wasn't born with his powers, back then he was just a jackal. Episode Shadow reveals that he was once a mercenary who joined Eggman after taking his offer to help take over the world and was assigned to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at Shadow's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.
  • Friendless Background: Infinite keeps reiterating that friendships are just illusions and keeps ignoring friendship speeches about how friendships are important. This implies that he never had any friends.
  • General Failure: Infinite is Eggman's main enforcer and genuinely dangerous, but he's also an Axe-Crazy Sadist more fixated on relishing in his enemies' pain than actually doing his job effectively or pragmatically. Eggman's ultimate defeat in the game is entirely on Infinite for playing with his food too much.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Upon realizing that Shadow has made him feel legitimate fear for the first time, Infinite completely breaks down and eventually allows himself to be Eggman's new guinea pig in exchange for power.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: His descent into madness was caused by his desire to exceed Shadow's level of power. After doing so, he shifts his focus to trying to one-up Sonic himself.
  • Hate Sink: Overall, Infinite is a Psychopathic Manchild with a constant Sadist streak, he may appear to be a badass, but by the end, it's clear that he's nothing but a bully.
  • Hand Blast: He is able to fire laser beams and Energy Balls from his hands.
  • The Heavy: He takes leadership of Eggman's army in Sonic Forces.
  • Hero Killer: Downplayed in that the only people he actually kills are the Avatar's teammates, but he effortlessly defeats other powerful characters such as Sonic, Silver, and Omega.
  • Hired Guns: He was a mercenary before Shadow inspired him to become more powerful.
  • Hope Crusher: Infinite thrives on driving his opponents to despair with his immense power. As he tells Silver:
Infinite: This wasn't part of my agenda, but I'm always happy to crush a hero. It keeps the rabble in line. Shows them that there is no hope.
  • Humanoid Abomination: He appears to be the same kind of Funny Animal species as the main cast, but his design incorporates traits from different animal species, he possesses powers beyond anything seen so far, and Tails is unable to make sense of the readings he gives out on the Miles Electric. He's really a Funny Animal (a jackal, specifically) like everyone else, but powered up by the Phantom Ruby.
  • I Can Still Fight!: His final words before he disappears.
  • Image Song: Aptly titled "Infinite".
  • Imagination-Based Superpower: The Phantom Ruby allows him to conjure up anything he feels like to attack Sonic and the others with, ranging from lasers to cannons to an outright Colony Drop using a localized burning star that fills the sky, the requirement being that they have to come in contact with the Phantom Ruby's red cubes or be in close enough physical proximity to Infinite. They're actually just illusions, but they will still be injured or killed as if the illusions were real.
  • Immune to Flinching: Played With during his boss fights. If struck by Sonic's Homing Attack or the Avatar's Wire Attack, he'll recoil from the impact. But if struck by the Avatar's Wispon attacks, he won't react outside of grunts of pain.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Heavily implied to have one. Episode Shadow reveals that prior to the game, he was the captain of a mercenary team and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary". That all changed one fateful day when he and his squad were hired by Eggman to protect one of his laboratories in Mystic Jungle, where they encountered Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow effortlessly destroyed his entire squad and handed Infinite a humiliating defeat, which would lead to Infinite's vow to become stronger and led to him obtaining the power of the Phantom Ruby. This is why he constantly boasts about his power: to make himself feel strong. This is also why he objects to Eggman's strategy to retreat after the Death Egg is destroyed. To him, retreat is a sign of weakness.
  • Infinite: It's his name. Duh. Fittingly enough, Hoobastank sings the main theme of Sonic Forces, and their name is often stylized as h∞bastank, also containing an Infinite symbol. He also has the infinity symbol decorated on the soles of his boots.
  • Informed Species: He's a jackal, despite looking very little like one.
  • Interface Screw: Throughout the Capital City stage, Infinite will occasionally pop in and use the Phantom Ruby to screw with the gravity.
  • I Work Alone: Espouses this sentiment during the final battle with him. Having his entire squadron wiped out by Shadow likely inspired a desire to never again rely on others.
Infinite: Friends are nothing but a fleeting illusion. You can count on nobody but yourself.
  • Jerkass: Exaggerated. Infinite spends nearly every second of his screentime behaving like a smug, sadistic bully that earns the ire of everyone from the Resistance, to the player, to even Eggman himself.
  • Just Toying with Them: Infinite rarely actually fights seriously and enjoys toying with his enemies for his own amusement. This is a Fatal Flaw, as playing with his food rather than being pragmatic ultimately royally screws him and Eggman over.
  • Kick the Dog: Does this near-constantly, but the shining example happens early on, when he massacres all of the Avatar's friends and spares the poor kid solely to mock them for being afraid.
  • Knight of Cerebus:
    • While Sonic Forces is one of the darker Sonic games to date, it still has some lighthearted scenes at times. Any scene involving Infinite, however, is utterly devoid of humor or levity. Notably, he is one of the few Sonic villains to be explicitly seen killing people onscreen.
    • This is best shown in Stage 16, Capital City. Knuckles, learning that Eggman's army is undermanned in his home base in Metropolis, decides to order a full-scale assault on the city. Things quickly go to hell when Infinite arrives and, at the doctor's command, activates the Phantom Ruby's power to create giant, grotesque illusions of himself, throwing the Resistance into chaos. By the time the stage ends, 80% of the Resistance is utterly annihilated.
  • Lack of Empathy: Infinite only cares for causing as much destruction and suffering as he can. He considers friendship to be a waste.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: He remarks to Eggman that Sonic has beaten him "for decades."
  • Literal-Minded: After Shadow wrecked his shit two months before the start of the game and told him to never "show your pathetic face around me ever again", Infinite took that to mean he should start wearing a mask.
  • Living Shadow: He resembles one quite well, especially when his Battle Aura is activated, and bears some similarities to Blaze's concept art.
  • Loves the Sound of Screaming: After decimating the Avatar's squad, he deliberately allowed them to run away and live for this reason.
Infinite: Give in to your fear. Flee, screaming, and I'll let you live.
  • Madness Mantra: I AM NOT WEAK!
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Wears a metallic mask shaped like a fox's head and is one of the main villains of the game.
  • Mask of Power: Whenever he gets ready to attack, the right eye on his mask glows red.
  • Mask of Sanity: Despite what his composed, eerily polite demeanor may imply, Infinite is nothing more than a petty Sadist who revels in the carnage he inflicts and melts down whenever things don't go his way.
  • Master of Illusion: The Phantom Ruby's true power. It doesn't actually warp reality, but it mind-rapes anyone within range with illusions and hallucinations that seem so real that whatever happens in said hallucinations happens for real. In his boss fights, this is done through his energy cubes. Contact with them sends the player into a glitching illusion where they are attacked by objects manifested by the Ruby's power.
  • Mineral MacGuffin: He has some relation to the mysterious purple gemstone that is referred to as the "Phantom Ruby" by an in-game guide that everyone was after in Sonic Mania, implied by the sound it makes. The game reveals that the Ruby was given to him by Eggman.
  • Mirror Character: Presumably the reason he loves tormenting the Avatar: He lost his squad and was called weak by a much more powerful opponent. It reminded Infinite of himself that day when he takes out the Avatar's squad and calls them "weak". Except now Infinite's the big dog who belittles his opponents, much like Shadow.
  • More Despicable Minion: Despite being taken a bit more seriously than usual in Forces, Dr. Eggman remains somewhat comical and buffoonish, and overall prioritizes Pragmatic Villainy over wanton destruction. Infinite, by contrast, is just a sadistic warlord who is taken dead seriously and prioritizes indulging in petty cruelty over actually following Eggman's orders. Eventually, even Eggman gets fed up with his excessive bloodlust and poor decisions.
  • Mysterious Past: Little is known about Infinite's backstory in the main game. While the prequel DLC and comics do shed some light on how he ended up working for Eggman, everything prior to that remains a complete enigma that will likely never be uncovered.
  • Mysterious Stranger: Infinite is presented as this, during the main story anyway. Sonic never discovers Infinite's backstory during the game. Only Shadow knows what he was before becoming what he is now.
Sonic: I don't know anything about you. Not even your name.
  • Narcissist: Infinite goes around flaunting his power and declaring himself superior to anyone who crosses him, and gets violently upset anyone bruises his ego. As Episode Shadow reveals, his entire reason for adopting his new persona was due to being defeated and humiliated by Shadow, and his fragile ego couldn't handle being considered "weak" by anyone.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: A completely unsympathetic example. After being beaten to a pulp and humiliated by Shadow, Infinite decides to subject himself to Eggman's experiments in order to become so powerful that nobody will ever be able to make him feel afraid or weak again. After obtaining the Phantom Ruby, he goes on to gleefully inflict those exact same feelings onto others.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Tormenting the Avatar, dropping the prototype Phantom Ruby and leaving Sonic alive screws him and Eggman over in the long run.
  • No Name Given: Even before taking the moniker "Infinite", we only know his nickname "The Ultimate Mercenary". His actual name is never revealed. Word of God would later clear this up and reveal his name actually is Infinite.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Used intentionally to give Infinite an otherworldly, alien feel to him. While designed in the same Cartoon Creature style as other characters, his design incorporates both foxlike traits as well as the hairstyle used by both hedgehogs and echindas. He also has a red outline around him and is constantly emanating a purple aura that occasionally flickers with red static, as if he's out of sync with the Sonic universe.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: When confronting the Avatar in Metropolis, he teleports right next to the Avatar, his mask mere inches away from his face, taunting him on whether he'll fight or run away again.
  • Not Worth Killing: His initial reaction to Sonic after their second fight, similar to King Arthur.
Infinite: As I predicted. You're not even worth the effort to finish off.
  • Obviously Evil: Let's see: Has black fur and clothing? Check. Wears a metallic mask shaped like a fox's head that hides his face save for an eye that has a gold iris and red sclera? Check. Glows with a red outline and emanates a purple haze with red glitching static? Check. Is the right-hand man to the main antagonist of the series? Check. Has a demonic, echoing voice? Check. Openly relishes death and destruction? Check. Yep, definitely a bad guy.
  • Ominous Visual Glitch: His aura occasionally has a glitch-like effect in some spots. The official Sonic Youtube channel's upload of his theme also has the image glitching out. His virtual reality constructs have the same glitching effect. Just before the final level of the game, Eggman is able to make him vanish like his constructs by recalling the Phantom Ruby, implying that part or all of his physical form had become a phantom construct.
  • Omnicidal Maniac:
    • Infinite and Eggman's plan in Sonic Forces is to destroy the world and rebuild it from the ashes in their image.
Infinite: We move forward with the plan?
Eggman: Of course! When it's complete, the Resistance will be erased. The world will be nothing but ashes, from which a glorious Eggman Empire will rise!
Infinite: And the Resistance will yield to the Phantom Ruby's power. All will submit.
    • The vision he got from the Phantom Ruby in the prequel comic implies he may have had ambitions of being one of these before he became what he is now.
  • Parody Sue: Has many traits of one of the "Villain Sue" variety. He's portrayed as faster than Sonic, able to curbstomp some of the strongest heroes in the series, forms a Legion of Doom of some of its strongest villains subservient to him, and spends every other sentence bragging about how powerful he is... because his one true, definitive power is the ability to make Your Mind Makes It Real illusions that make himself appear all-powerful. In actuality, he's nothing more than a sadistic bully with more power than he has any right to, and once ways around his power are found, he's not nearly as invincible and perfect as he thinks he is.
  • Pitiful Worms: Constantly insults and belittles Sonic and the Resistance, referring to them with such terms as "rabble" and "ants" and "pests". In the Japanese version, he's quite fond of calling them "trash".
  • Power Crystal: The source of Infinite's power is the gem on his chest, a finalized version of the Phantom Ruby prototypes created by Eggman.
  • Power Incontinence: Implied. After being defeated by Sonic and the Avatar, Infinite's body begins to glitch and warp like his virtual reality constructs, implying that they did so much damage to Infinite that his body couldn't contain or control the Phantom Ruby anymore.
  • Power of the Void: He can attack with Hard Light cubes of Pure Energy. A more straightforward example is the Phantom Ruby's ability to create Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists. He uses this in an attempt to kill Sonic, but Sonic manages to escape with help from the Avatar.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: Gameplay-wise, anyway. In cutscenes, he's a dynamic, hands-on fighter who pelts opponents with energy attacks. In his boss fights, he mainly floats around and attacks with his cubes, arranging them in various shapes. Of course, given the nature of his powers, it's not entirely clear how much of what Infinite does is actually him and how much is an illusion created by the Phantom Ruby.
  • Psycho for Hire: He's a Sadist who really enjoys his work as Eggman's Dragon. He also really enjoyed being a mercenary and willingly joined Eggman. Deconstructed to a degree, as his sadism is a Fatal Flaw that ultimately bites him and Eggman in the end and causes him to make mistakes that even Eggman realizes were blunders.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Pretty much the definition of the trope. His whole motivation basically boils down to him throwing a massive tantrum over being humiliated by Shadow.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He was originally just another hired goon in Eggman's employ. Then Shadow wrecked his shit, driving him over the edge and turning him into what he is today.
  • Readings Are Off the Scale: While no numbers are given, Tails states that the readings he's getting off of Infinite don't make sense. Given the true nature of his powers, this was likely because what it was picking up and what Tails and Sonic saw happening didn't match up.
  • Reality Warper: Of a sort. Infinite can't control conventional reality per sé, but he possesses absolute control of reality for anything caught in the Phantom Ruby's field of effect, casting a world of illusion that becomes tangible reality for all afflicted. This can have varied results ranging anywhere from confusing the senses, losing sense of time, altering the terrain, or dropping a star from the sky.
  • Recurring Boss: You fight Infinite three times throughout the game. The first fight is with Sonic, the second fight is with the Avatar, and the final battle is with Sonic and the Avatar together.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: He's colored black and red, and radiating reddish energy, and he is certainly not to be trifled with.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. He appears to have red sclera, but Episode Shadow reveals that it's just the red-tinted glass of the mask. His sclera is actually white.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Eggman's red. Best shown in their reaction to Sonic and the Avatar escaping the Phantom Ruby's Null Space. While Eggman is naturally having a Freak Out, Infinite merely responds with an unamused scoff. Ironically, Eggman is more of a Crazy-Prepared No-Nonsense Nemesis (Blue), while Infinite is a Stupid Evil Sadist (Red).
  • Restraining Bolt: Exactly how it works isn't made clear, but when Infinite fails one time too many, Eggman proves capable of effortlessly recalling him and reclaiming the Phantom Ruby and Infinite is powerless to do anything about it.
  • Sadist: Hoo boy. Infinite absolutely relishes in causing terror and pain in others and he is not afraid to let it be known. A throwaway line in his theme song outright says that Infinite is at his best when people are at their lowest. Deconstructed, as his rampant sadism costs him and Eggman in the end.
Infinite: (To the Avatar) Fine, I will teach you fear, then pain, and then... Well, at least the fear and pain will end.
Infinite: (To the Avatar) I can taste your terror, child. All that anxiety and doubt... it's delicious. (Fires an energy blast in front of the Avatar, intentionally missing just to startle them) Give in to your fear. Flee, screaming, and I'll let you live. (Evil Laugh)
  • Sanity Has Advantages: While Infinite is extremely dangerous, he's also clearly an insane sadist. This screws over him and Eggman on several occasions, as he prioritizes his sadism over pragmatism.
  • Sanity Slippage: In issue four of the prequel comic, Infinite was a ruthless mercenary, but a relatively stable guy (though his Phantom Ruby-induced vision of a desolate world implied there was some element of insanity). However, the death of his squad and his own humiliating defeat at Shadow's hand brought all of that madness to the surface.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Fitting his role as a Classic Villain and Hate Sink, Infinite embodies all the cardinal sins throughout the game:
    • Lust: Infinite takes pleasure in spreading chaos and destruction wherever he goes, and was shown in the game's prequel comic to have already dreamed of a world in ruin before he even joined Dr. Eggman.
    • Gluttony: Infinite has a constant and insatiable desire to relish in the terror and suffering of others to the point that it prevents him from acting pragmatically, which possibly also influenced his decision to spare Sonic and the Avatar in the times they showed that they didn't fear him as much as he'd wanted them to.
    • Greed: Infinite also has a desire for raw power and domination, both to sate his desires of making others suffer and for the glory of becoming the most powerful warrior who ever lived.
    • Sloth: Infinite completely relies on the power of the Phantom Ruby replica that Eggman made for him. Even then, he isn't even that good at using it on his own despite it giving him an Imagination-Based Superpower— his fighting style throughout the game typically involves using raw energy to create laser blasts or simple energy constructs that attack his opponents for him, and the only physical ability he ever thinks to utilize is a Dash Attack.
    • Wrath: Infinite ruthlessly hurts and kills others for the sake of showing his dominance over them, and as stated above, desires rampant chaos and suffering more than anything else. He's also incredibly petty on top of it, and tries to psychologically torment his enemies any chance he can.
    • Envy: Infinite is driven by a crippling inferiority complex, and his entire motivation for becoming Eggman's champion, as revealed in Episode Shadow, is that Shadow curb-stomped him after beating his flunkies and told him not to "show [his] pathetic face" around him ever again. Hence, Infinite donned a mask and the power of the Phantom Ruby purely out of a desire to be a bigger deal than Shadow, and the Cold Ham persona he picked up afterwards could possibly even be imitating Shadow's own stoic demeanor and tendency to belittle his opponents.
    • Pride: Infinite appropriately has this as his true Fatal Flaw, with all the other sins discussed here meant to affirm it. Infinite believes himself to be the most powerful being who ever lived, constantly looks down upon his enemies and brags about how powerful he is, and is so rife with overconfidence to the point of believing he's invincible, which leads to him screwing over Eggman's plans on multiple occasions, to the point that Eggman pulls a You Have Failed Me when Sonic and the Avatar beat him for the final time.
  • Skyward Scream: In his breakdown.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Even before taking up the mask and becoming reborn, he considered himself to be the "ultimate mercenary" before Shadow took him down in one battle. Even after his upgrade, Infinite isn't as big of a fish as he thinks he is, as he was little more than a pawn for Eggman that the good doctor disposes of the moment he's screwed up one time too many.
  • Smug Super: Infinite has a bigger ego than Sonic and Shadow combined, and has all the power to justify it now. He was a relatively weak Miles Gloriosus originally.
  • The Social Darwinist: Espouses this sentiment during his fight with the Avatar. As revealed in Episode Shadow, this sentiment is likely the result of his effortless defeat at Shadow's hands. He never again wanted to be as weak as he was that day, and that conviction and self-loathing seems to have inspired a hatred for those who are weak.
Infinite: (To the Avatar) You must be a straggler who got left behind. The strong will always vanquish the weak. You have only your own frailty to blame.
  • The Sociopath: Infinite is utterly devoid of empathy, takes pleasure in inflicting pain on others, and almost always speaks in a polite, yet condescending manner. However, he also lacks foresight, making him prone to screwing up his own plans due to poor impulse control and excessive need to be stimulated.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Rarely raises his voice above a cold, Creepy Monotone, even when committing acts of mass slaughter.
  • Sore Loser: Infinite is motivated by his maniacal desire for a desolated world where he remains at the top, but his firsts actions once reborn is to trap Shadow in a world of illusions purely because Shadow defeated him and destroyed his squad.
  • Space Master: While the Phantom Ruby's powers are mostly centered around illusions and virtual reality, it does give Infinite some degree of spatial manipulation, mostly centered on controlling gravity. In Central City, Infinite uses the Phantom Ruby to screw with the gravity and he's also capable of creating Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists.
  • The Starscream: Subverted. While Infinite does disagree with Eggman at times, he remains loyal (or at least subservient) to him to the end. However, given that Eggman had full control of the Phantom Ruby and could recall it at any time, it's likely that Infinite wouldn't have had a say in the matter.
  • Start of Darkness:
    • Episode Shadow reveals that he was once an ordinary jackal and a mercenary hired by Eggman to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at the dark hedgehog's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.
    • The fourth and final tie-in comic shows it started a little sooner when despite failing to steal anything from Eggman, Eggman offers Infinite and the Jackal Squad the chance to become stronger and take over the world. Infinite is more than happy to oblige.
  • The Stoic: To the point of Dissonant Serenity. Infinite is never seen to be anything other than unnervingly calm, barely raising his voice outside of the occasional Evil Laugh and two This Cannot Be! moments. It helps that the mask hides his facial expressions. Episode Shadow shows that he was more emotive prior to the game.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Infinite is able to create "virtual reality constructs" that have the personalities and powers of the characters they are based on, so it's possible for him to create an army of giant Shadows, Chaoses and distorted versions of Perfect Chaos, Zavoks, and Metal Sonics.
  • Stupid Evil: His primary flaw is that he prioritizes indulging his own sadism over the mission, with disastrous results for both himself and Dr. Eggman.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Well, only one eye, but his eye has a gold iris with red sclera.
  • Superpower Lottery: The Phantom Ruby's illusion powers are incredibly versatile and dangerous. With the Phantom Ruby Prototype, Infinite can create intricate illusions that are so realistic that anything that happens to the victim in the illusion affects them for real. Infinite can also use this power to create virtual reality constructs of any character, complete with the memories, powers, and personalities of the original, and he can alter them to make them stronger and more dangerous, such making Metal Sonic bigger and granting him electrified versions of his energy cubes. Infinite can also use the Phantom Ruby to create Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists, much like a real-life black hole. Apart from that, Infinite has flight, super speed, super strength, energy blasts, and incredible durability.
  • Super-Soldier: Episode Shadow reveals that he's basically one for Eggman. Infinite was already a highly skilled mercenary, but the "super" part didn't come in until he gained the power of the Phantom Ruby.
  • Super-Speed: He's quick enough to Flash Step. It’s implied that it's not just actual speed, as he can seemingly teleport. Infinite's real power and the strange readings imply he can't even do that and is more using the Phantom Ruby to appear capable of it. In practice, Sonic is capable of keeping pace with him once the Phantom Ruby's power isn't at play.
Tails: Whoa. This guy is faster than Sonic!
  • This Cannot Be!: His normally unshakable demeanor has faltered on two occasions, the first being when the Avatar manages to survive Infinite's illusion during his fight with them, and the second being when he's defeated for the final time.
  • Too Important to Walk: Highlighting his Smug Super nature, Infinite is never seen walking and prefers to just fly around as a demonstration of his power.
  • Trash Talk: In the Japanese version, he frequently dismisses all his enemies as "trash".
  • Uncertain Doom: While it is implied that his body started fading away after it was too damaged to handle the Phantom Ruby's power anymore, and made clear (in the Japanese version especially) that Eggman himself recalled him once he lost too many times, it's not made explicit as to whether he actually died following his last fight with Sonic and the Avatar, only that Eggman likely placed his Phantom Ruby into his Death Egg Robot. The Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia proposes that he and his prototype Phantom Ruby ended up getting absorbed into the original Phantom Ruby, though that doesn't clarify if he's gone for good, especially since the Ruby is still intact.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Implied. While Infinite has some skill in hand-to-hand combat thanks to his mercenary background and can steamroll through a good chunk of the cast, he is entirely reliant on the Phantom Ruby in combat. His boss fights mainly consist of him letting his energy cubes do all the work, with his only physical attack being an easily avoidable Dash Attack. In cutscenes, his fighting style basically boils down to "throw energy blasts at opponents until they die". He's shown to have trouble when its powers are weakened or neutralized. In addition, Eggman shows himself to be far more proficient in the Phantom Ruby's use.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Infinite thinks he's a lot higher on the totem pole than he actually is and the more important one in him and Eggman's relationship. In reality, Infinite is little more than a disposable pawn that Eggman already has a replacement ready for and can get rid of with casual ease when he feels like it. Infinite doesn't realize Eggman has played him like a fiddle the entire time until Eggman decides You Have Failed Me after one screw up too many.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Infinite skirts the line about as razor-thin as you can get. His constant death threats and assurances that he will make things slow and painful for any opposition still avoid bumping the rating above "E-10+" (so no worse than the highest-rated games in the franchise like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), or Sonic Lost World) and don't necessarily remove the usual Sonic feel from the scenes he's not in, but he definitely changes the tone of the game in comparison to the rest of the franchise.
  • Villain Ball: After defeating Sonic in the Mystic Jungle, he lets him live, deeming him Not Worth Killing. Eggman calls him out on doing so, knowing that Sonic will continue to be a threat as long as he's still alive, and is ultimately proven right.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He has a huge one after Shadow humiliated him, going into a insane freak-out which pushes him into becoming Eggman's weapon. He also has another (albeit brief) one when he starts to disappear after being defeated for the last time.
Infinite: [notices his hand shaking] I... I'm shaking... Me!? Me... Afraid...!? Urgh. Pathetic!? Me... he's calling ME weak!? No! I am not weak! I'm... I'm not. I'm not weak! I AM NOT WEEEEAAAAAAK! URRRAAAAAAAAAAAGHH!
  • Villain Song: Has one that can be heard here, which goes out of its way to describe just how dangerous and powerful he is and how he'll destroy anything in his way.
  • Visual Pun: Infinite's habit of hovering above the heroes means that he's literally "looking down on them".
  • Voice of the Legion: His voice sounds truly demonic.
  • Was Once a Man: He used to be a regular guy like Sonic and his friends before aligning himself with Eggman. Episode Shadow reveals that he was once an ordinary jackal and a mercenary hired by Eggman to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at the dark hedgehog's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.
  • We Can Rule Together: Eggman offers this to Infinite after a fight with him, and Infinite accepted the offer.
  • We Have Become Complacent: The only reason he was able to beat Sonic the first time was because he had four of his replicas backing him up. That victory only made Infinite too overconfident in his abilities, which leads to his sadism making critical mistakes for Eggman.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After his final defeat in Sonic Forces, he fades away into a light and flies into a tower, after which Tails tracks his Phantom Ruby leading to Eggman's final mecha with Infinite nowhere to be seen. It was later revealed in the Encyclo-speed-ia that he and his prototype were "consumed" by the original Phantom Ruby.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He has ghostly white hair and he's one of the bad guys.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: His main ambition for utilizing the Phantom Ruby. Rather expectedly, Shadow, the one who started his embitterment, is the first person he personally toys with before starting about capturing Sonic.
  • The Worf Effect: His first meeting with Sonic ends with the hero utterly trounced.
  • Worthy Opponent: Averted. He treats everyone he fights with utter contempt, but his interactions with Omega, Shadow and Sonic imply that he sees them as the ones to defeat in order to prove he's the strongest. Once he defeats Sonic though, he doesn't bother taking him seriously afterwards.
  • You Have Failed Me: All but said. After the virtual sun plan fails thanks to Infinite's screw-up and he's defeated by Sonic and the Avatar, he's teleported away against his will. Tails then tracks his Phantom Ruby underground… leading directly to Eggman's final mecha powered by it, with no sign of Infinite.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Revealed to be the actual power of the Phantom Ruby: it creates illusions that nonetheless feel real to the victim's brain, causing injuries taken in the illusion to occur to the victim in reality.

    The Titans
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/titans_sonic_frontiers_2.png
From top-to-bottom: GIGANTO, WYVERN, KNIGHT, and SUPREME
Four enormous robotic entities found on the Starfall islands that Sonic is unable to fight against normally, their power being just that great. Sonic has to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds to assume his Super form and fight them on even footing.
  • All Your Powers Combined: SUPREME takes traits from the previous three Titans, having GIGANTO's basic build, WYVERN's flight ability, and KNIGHT's weapon capabilities (just with a BFG and drones versus a BFS and shield).
  • Autobots, Rock Out!: Every Titan is accompanied by supremely hardcore rock music to fit the intensity of the battle.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: KNIGHT has some sort of apparatus behind its head that gives the impression of long hair locks, emphasizing how much of a warrior it is.
  • BFG: SUPREME is equipped with a cannon that extends to be even larger than itself.
  • BFS: KNIGHT wields an even bigger sword as its main weapon. It's longer than KNIGHT is tall, and can engage a special mode that makes it even longer!
  • Climax Boss: They're the primary target on the Starfall Islands, with Sonic having to gather Chaos Emeralds to go Super and face them head-on.
  • Company Cross References: They're Humongous Mecha with builds that belie their actual capabilities for things such as speed and are effectively piloted by the souls of their creators. In other words, they're Virtuaroids.
  • Colossus Climb: Barring SUPREME, each of them contains the last Emerald Sonic needs to go Super. He has to carefully ascend their bodies and get to their heads where the last Emerald is located while trying not to get swatted off.
  • David Versus Goliath: Powerful as Super Sonic may be, he's still extremely tiny compared to these towering monstrosities, and it's all the more impressive that he's able to take them down.
  • Energy Ball: THE END-possessed SUPREME in the Final Horizon update finale will fire balls of cyber corruption from its multiple arms that permanently decrease Sonic's ring count with each successful hit. If Sonic is hit by one during the second phase of the fight, a cutscene initiates where THE END creates a massive sphere of cyber corruption and hurls it at Sonic, knocking him out of Super Sonic 2 state and taking away so many rings that, no matter how many he had beforehand, when he reassumes Super Sonic 2 he only has 100 rings left. And if Sonic already had less than 100 rings at the time, it's an instant kill.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: Each of them has several sensors resembling Black Eyes of Evil scattered across their bodies.
  • Eyeless Face: GIGANTO and WYVERN don't appear to have any eyes, their huge mouths taking up the entirety of their faces. KNIGHT and SUPREME have small eye-like features.
  • Expy: The Titans are clear homages to the titular giant robots from Neon Genesis Evangelion, sharing a few key elements (Scary Teeth, gangly proportions, roaring like monsters, containing the souls of their previous pilots) with them. GIGANTO has often been compared to Unit 01, mainly with it being the first Titan Sonic faces and so leaving the biggest impression (also see Shout-Out below). WYVERN resembles Gaghiel, and dies in a similar manner as him (except that the missiles Super Sonic fed him were launched by WYVERN itself instead of an enemy ship). SUPREME also appears to be an allusion to Sachiel (Third Angel in the original, Fourth in Rebuild), due to its whiteish exterior, broad shoulders, round head, and a red spherical structure on its body. Not to mention how SUPREME contained THE END, an entity that Ian Flynn had compared to the Angels in a Q&A panel. The Final Horizon altered finale completes the homage by having SUPREME be powered up via attaching what's clearly an Eva's umbilical cable to the same location in the top of its spine, which causes it to enter a bestial form with the body language of a berserk Eva.
  • Giant Flyer: WYVERN is comparable in length to its fellow Titans yet still has no problems soaring through the sky. It does have less bulk than the others, likely to help its aerodynamic ability.
  • Giant Foot of Stomping: During the first encounter with GIGANTO, the Titan initially attempts to crush Sonic by repeatedly stomping the ground with enough force to dislodge massive boulders high into the air.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Sonic needs to become Super Sonic just to fight them. Please keep in mind that these days, Super Sonic is usually reserved strictly for the True Final Boss of a given game.
  • Healing Factor: In the Final Horizon altered finale, THE END provides this to SUPREME by directly interfacing a large purple tendril into the Titan's head, allowing it to quickly restore health even as Cyber Super Sonic repeatedly strikes away. Only by attacking and dodging to the side can Sonic target the cord and disconnect it with repeated attacks or a Cyloop, allowing SUPREME to take damage the normal way. THE END will do this several times during the fight.
  • Hero Antagonist: It turns out that they are functionally this, as they were created by the Ancients to fight and seal away the real enemy of the game — THE END.
  • High-Altitude Battle: Super Sonic and WYVERN battle entirely in the air, flying around and over the island. SUPREME's second half has him generate wings and take to the air.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard:
  • Humongous Mecha: These guys are simply gargantuan, dwarfing absolutely everything on the Starfall Islands. It turns out they were intended to be piloted by the Ancients.
  • Impossibly Graceful Giant: All four of them move with such speed and fluidity that shouldn't be possible for their size, and yet, they do. To wit:
    • GIGANTO can do 720-degree turns for spin attacks in under a second, and is able to snatch Sonic out of the air in their first encounter.
    • WYVERN can fly at speeds that outpace Super Sonic, yet can stop on a dime to swipe at him.
    • KNIGHT is equipped with roller skates that let it circle around a massive caldera at breakneck speeds.
    • SUPREME, like GIGANTO, is capable of striking out with its arms at a speed that would be more reasonable if it was the same size as Sonic. It's also capable of flight. Additionally, Dummied Out QTEs show that it can perform a Flash Step and leap thousands of feet in the air effortlessly.
  • The Juggernaut: Sonic can't fight them period without the Chaos Emeralds. Their thick armor makes it impossible for them to be damaged through conventional means. And even as Super Sonic, the Titans can still give him a hard fight, and can even outright KILL Super Sonic if he's not careful. This is because they were made and powered by the Chaos Emeralds in the first place.
  • Lean and Mean: All of them share this in some way.
    • GIGANTO and SUPREME have skinny limbs compared to their bulky torsos and chests.
    • WYVERN has a very thin and lean serpentine build overall.
    • KNIGHT has a lean build that looks deceptively bulky at first due how its lower body consists of multiple limbs and along with its upper body looks much thicker compared to its thin torso.
  • Lightning Bruiser: They're huge, strong enough to withstand Super Sonic's blows to a degree, able to move with agility that flies in the face of the laws of physics, and can knock Super Sonic back with ease while unleashing all manner of retaliation.
  • Macross Missile Massacre:
    • WYVERN regularly fires tons of missiles at Super Sonic during their battle. Super Sonic can easily turn the tables on it by parrying its missile back into it, as well as engaging in two Quick Time Events that involve directing its entire barrage of missiles back toward it.
    • KNIGHT will continuously launch a missile barrage at Super Sonic once he jumps on and takes control of its shield in order to knock it off-course from hitting it back.
  • Mechanical Abomination: Far from your average Humongous Mecha, they feel more like colossal synthetic entities with bestial features, like massive tooth-filled maws and very thin limbs. They're also unbelievably tough, capable of lasting a good while against Super Sonic where almost every other foe he's fought in that form fell rather easily.
  • Monstrous Mandibles: WYVERN's jaw splits into four parts, which is most prominent when it roars.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: In the Final Horizon's altered finale, after beating SUPREME'S retained first phase, THE END's possession of the Titan causes extra arms to emerge out of the jetpack openings for the rest of the fight, from which it fires its Energy Balls.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Downplayed for GIGANTO, as the Titan has an astronomically thickened upper body, its arms however are abnormally thinner than its Shoulders of Doom. The beast was able to one-shot Sonic in his normal form as well as being able to throw down against Super Sonic with its own might.
    • WYVERN has an abnormal serpentine/centipede-like body, although that alone doesn't stop it from combating Super Sonic as well.
  • Nested Mouths: GIGANTO has several layers of teeth, prominently shown in its boss title card.
  • No-Sell: No matter how many times the player spams Sonic's Homing Attacks right into GIGANTO's face, the Titan doesn't even show a single reaction to feeling any kind of pain from them. At all. Sonic, by then, suffers The Worf Effect horribly when it starts fighting back.
  • Our Titans Are Different: They're a group of almost-eldritch Humongous Mecha that are positively ancient and incredibly powerful, each one requiring the cosmic-like power of Super Sonic to put down and making him work for it. It turns out they were created and powered by the Chaos Emeralds originally, explaining how they can compete with Super Sonic.
  • Palette Swap: SUPREME looks like GIGANTO but with a new head, a color scheme that emphasizes white over black, and a huge jetpack on its back.
  • Power Gives You Wings: When SUPREME Turns Red, rather than extra projectiles (which would be rather redundant due to the fight already bordering on Bullet Hell), the pillars jutting out of its body conjure a series of feather-like energy constructs that take the form of four long wings, allowing it to fly without even using its jetpack.
  • Power Up Full Color Change: When THE END fully takes over SUPREME in the Final Horizon updated finale, it turns its previously white-colored body black as it powers it up and makes other alterations.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: GIGANTO, WYVERN, and KNIGHT are mostly black and white, with red highlights. SUPREME focuses more on white over black, but still has plenty of red. All of them are colossal bosses that stand in Sonic's way of saving his friends.
  • Rollerblade Good: KNIGHT has four legs with wheel-like structures, letting it zoom around and run circles in its arena.
  • Scary Teeth: They all have rather menacing-looking maws of teeth that make them look more like giant monstrous creatures.
  • Shrine to the Fallen: The Titans are walking memorials to the four tribes of the Ancients that didn't survive THE END's destruction of their planet. The tribe that escaped (known for their intelligence) modeled the Titans after the lost tribes: the tribe with big and powerful bodies (GIGANTO), the tribe that grew tails instead of legs (WYVERN), the tribe that walked on four legs (KNIGHT), and a winged tribe (SUPREME).
  • Shoulders of Doom: Both GIGANTO and SUPREME are strongly built with having gargantuan-looking shoulders that gives them definitively hulking and monstrous images.
  • Shout-Out: When GIGANTO grabs Sonic for the first time, the camera is positioned to mimic Unit 01 holding Kaworu in its fist in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
  • Spin Attack: At low health, WYVERN will shoot off into the sky and prompt a Quick Time Event where Super Sonic has to catch it as it power-bombs down right on his head, spinning its body so rapidly in descent it's wreathed in purple-pink energy.
  • Super-Strength: Sonic wasn't powerful enough to fight GIGANTO's strength, as the mechanical monstrosity demonstrates its power by stomping the ground hard enough to create a Chunky Updraft, and has chucked the rapid hedgehog far enough to have him get plowed through 2 ginormous pillars, and into the side of a mountain just to knock him out cold. During its boss fight, if Super Sonic isn't quick enough to perform a Counter-Attack in time, GIGANTO will basically Bitch Slap the golden hedgehog a considerable distance.
  • Super-Toughness: Whatever they're made of, it's preposterously tough, as proven during Sonic's encounter with GIGANTO when multiple attacks right to its face do absolutely nothing when Sonic's Homing Attack alone shattered the massive boulders it stomped into the air. Sonic needs to go Super just to do any damage at all. When SUPREME is powered up by THE END in The Final Horizon update, even Super Sonic is reduced to doing at best Scratch Damage even if you focus on cutting its Achilles' Power Cord as soon as possible to negate its Healing Factor before he needs to unleash the cyber corruption to achieve his next state.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: These things combining gargantuan size with being Impossibly Graceful Giants means under normal circumstances it would be nearly impossible for Sonic to climb them, reach the last Chaos Emerald, and become Super Sonic, so each of them (except SUPREME, whose fight starts with Sonic in Super form) provides something for Sonic to use: GIGANTO has foot-mounted launchers directed towards its arm, WYVERN generates a solid-energy runway that eventually reaches its head and KNIGHT periodically stretches out its arm and slams it at Sonic to create a usable rail.
  • Throwing Your Shield Always Works: KNIGHT has a shield with buzzsaw-blades on the rim it can hurl through the air like a guided boomerang. Super Sonic can deflect and ride it right back at KNIGHT for extra damage.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: GIGANTO and SUPREME have incredibly bulky and wide chests, but their legs and arms are incredibly skinny.
  • Turns Red: When their health is low enough, they engage a new set of weapon systems involving battery-like pillars jutting out of their bodies, which fire additional projectiles like lasers to try and take Super Sonic down.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: The fact that Sonic seriously needed to gather all the Chaos Emeralds just to even stand a chance against the first one says it all.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: GIGANTO and SUPREME can launch enormous energy beams to blast Sonic to dust. GIGANTO fires a single beam from its mouth, while SUPREME uses two of its drones to fire two beams at once. WYVERN can fire relatively weaker lasers from its own mouth. If Super Sonic 2 uses a Cyloop on THE END-possessed SUPREME, it will retaliate by firing a red-black beam from its mouth to knock Sonic away while it's trapped.
  • White and Red and Eerie All Over: This is SUPREME's color scheme, the final Titan that stands in Sonic's way. It also contains the true Big Bad of the game, THE END.
  • Wolverine Claws: WYVERN has massive curved claws on its arms comparable to scimitars.

THE END (Unmarked Sonic Frontiers Spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/endmoon.png
Since time immemorial, I have languished here.
The locks are broken.
Now I shall tear down the walls between dimensions and consume all.
Voiced By: Cindy Robinson (English, Female Voice), Mike Pollock (English, Male Voice), Gara Takashima (Japanese, Female Voice), Hōchū Ōtsuka (Japanese, Male Voice)additional VAs

An ancient malevolent entity that once fought the Ancients in the past before getting sealed away by its opponents. When Sonic arrives on Starfall Islands in the present day, it tricks him into defeating the Titans so it can resume its consumption of worlds, including his own.

  • Absolute Xenophobe: It explains in the final battle of the main game that it views all life other than itself as nothing but a “teeming chaos” that must be “brought to order”, and it also spends the fight bragging about how superior it is to everything that exists.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: It came from deep space, and it's a truly nasty piece of work.
  • Allegorical Character: THE END is an embodiment of the death of the universe as well as a loss of hope. In regards to the Ancients, it represents the pain and toil they've suffered after having their planet destroyed.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Either this or no gender at all. It speaks in Sonic's head with a feminine voice, but once it breaks out, it sounds both masculine and feminine, though towards the end of its monologue during the battle, it goes back to just a feminine voice. Sonic refers to it as "he" when urging the Titans to help in the final battle, but every other instance in the game refers to the being as "it"note . Given how incomprehensible this thing is, it's impossible to determine if it even has a gender.
  • Ancient Evil: THE END has apparently existed for at least tens of thousands of years if not aeons, and quite possibly existed since the beginning of time itself. The Japanese dub of the game specifies that it was around since at least the beginning of our universe.
  • Apocalypse How: Pulls a Class X on The Ancients' homeworld and plans on doing this on Sonic's planet. It is either going for an Class X-4 for its overall goal at its worst, but it may be going for a Class Z given how after it breaks out of Cyber Space it says it'll tear down the walls of entire dimensions and consume everything.
  • Appearance Is in the Eye of the Beholder: In a Japanese stream, invokedWord of God mentions that THE END's true form has yet to be revealed, as its appearance differs based on how the entity looking at it perceives the incarnation of death. The fact that it looks like the moon is because the moon is the form that the player sees, while it is currently unknown what THE END looks like through the eyes of Sonic or Sage, or without the manipulated perception of others.
  • Astral Finale: The base game’s final boss fight with THE END takes place in space, directly above the Earth in a clash to prevent it from destroying the planet, as well as the entire universe.
  • Badass Boast: Overlapping with Boss Banter, during the base game’s final boss fight, THE END gives a SHODAN-esque monologue about its inevitability and power, and how it surpasses all threats known and faced by Sonic before.
THE END: Mortal, you have served your purpose. Now face your End. I am the all-consuming void. What can one mote of golden light illuminate within the abyss? Countless stars. Countless worlds. Countless lives. All fell to me. All brought to nothing. All the teeming chaos of creation? Brought to order. To neutrality. To nothing. I saw your mind as you ran through my prison. You have fought machines and gods. They were mighty. They were finite. I am infinite. I am nothing. You struggle as so many have done before. You will be consumed like all those before you. I saw your mind. Your courage never wavered. Why? Arrogance? Ignorance? Stupidity? I was contained, once. Once. Is that why? My captors bent time and space. My captors built a whole reality to contain me. My captors burnt their souls away to fuel their engines. And you? You glitter. You fly above me like a gnat. I am inevitable. I cannot be denied. You strike this incarnation with all your might. It changes nothing. You are not brave. You are not victorious. No matter what form I take... THE END comes for you all!
  • Batman Gambit: Its plan to break free involves using Sonic's love for his friends against him. Since it's been sealed by the Chaos Emeralds, THE END captures Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, leaving collecting the Emeralds as the only thing that can free Sonic's friends. Once Sonic collects all but one, THE END breaks loose.
  • Beast of the Apocalypse: It likely would have destroyed the universe had the Ancients not sealed it away. The mere possibility of it being freed horrified Sage to the point of sealing her own creator in Cyber Space and antagonizing Sonic in a desperate effort to protect them both. And when THE END is eventually unsealed, it takes the combined efforts of Super Sonic and Sage (piloting the Titan SUPREME) to take it down, and not without Sage giving herself up to stop its suicide attack.
  • Big Bad: It's the main villain of Frontiers that desires the Chaos Emeralds of the Ancients and consumes worlds.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: It seems very polite to Sonic when it tells Sonic to get the Chaos Emeralds and free his friends, but once it's freed it truly shows that it is an incredibly depraved being that wishes to consume all of existence.
  • Boss Subtitles: THE END is referred to as "The True Enemy", further cementing its Greater-Scope Villain status, in its respective boss battle.
  • Breaking Old Trends: THE END is the first main villain in a Sonic game for quite a while that wasn't just Eggman, or Eggman using the entity. Although he had plans to use it when he gets freed from Cyber Space, he stood absolutely no chance at controlling it. The thing has autonomy, and had primarily worked against Eggman all throughout the game, rather than work for him.
  • Bullet Hell: In its own boss fight, it attacks mainly by firing constant barrages black and white bullets in the style of Ikaruga (complete with being able to destroy/absorb shots of the same polarity), and its later patterns reaching the complexity of that game's. It also is fond of spamming lasers that can't be absorbed by either color.
  • Call-Back: The premise of THE END's base game boss fight is very similar to Ultimate Gemerl's. Both fights take place in space, require Super Sonic to work with an antagonistic figure and both of them have melancholy boss themes.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: It casually mentions some of the heinous crimes it has committed and considers itself far more evil and powerful than any of Sonic's previous foes.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Is this to Infinite in almost every way, right down to their names.
    • Both act as subversions of Eggman's usual Evil Is Not a Toy plots, but Infinite was a deliberate creation of Eggman’s who was dismissed as expendable when he screwed up one too many times. THE END is an independent Ancient Evil who Eggman didn’t even know about until it was already too late.
    • Both have strong connections to the anti-villains of the Adventure games: Infinite was completely beaten down by Shadow in a one-sided fight, and inspired to go From Nobody to Nightmare when Shadow didn't think him important enough to finish the job. THE END was just barely sealed away by Chaos' ancestors, who unlike Shadow, went out of their way to make sure it never menaced the world again.
    • Infinite is a major presence throughout his game, mocking the heroes and relishing in his power as publicly and often as possible. THE END also has a major presence in its own game, but is far subtler about it, manipulating everything from behind the scenes, and its true nature isn’t revealed at all until shortly before the final battle.
    • Infinite is a rare Sonic antagonist with no connection or interest whatsoever regarding the Chaos Emeralds, to the point of using a completely different magic gem for his purposes. THE END is the reason the Chaos Emeralds came to Earth in the first place.
    • Towards the end of his game, Infinite creates an artificial sun illusion to destroy the entire resistance. THE END takes on a form resembling the moon at the end of its game to destroy the Earth.
    • It's also a direct contrast to prior Eldritch Abomination Evil Is Not a Toy antagonists as well. Prior Eggman plots usually had him trying to control a dangerous being to varying degrees of success, from total control (Time Eater), believed control until betrayal (Perfect Chaos, Dark Gaia), or just being undermined as the villain by the machinations of others (Gerald Robotnik and the Biolizard, Solaris and its components Mephiles and Iblis), which usually results in his being knocked out of the picture, and needing Sonic to ultimately defeat his mistake. This time, THE END is an entirely independent Ancient Evil who pretty much outright ignores Eggman, instead dedicating its efforts into manipulating Sonic instead, with Sage (and by proxy Eggman due to being his creation) having to save Sonic and help deal the final blow.
  • Control Freak: It sees itself as the ultimate enforcer of order and wants to eliminate all other life because it views life as a chaos that threatens its order.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: It is directly based on the Angels from Neon Genesis Evangelion; like them, it is a powerful entity with ambiguous origins that desires to wipe out all life on Earth so as to become the sole remaining lifeform. But while the Angels are artificial creations simply following their programming and have no real malice in their actions, THE END is an arrogant, self-righteous, and overtly malicious Control Freak that sees all life other than itself as a chaotic blight on its perfect order that must be wiped out.
  • Dark Is Evil: Its colour is entirely a dark purple in its moon form, and the mist it uses to turn into its moon form is also a dark purple colour, and it's one of the darkest Sonic villains yet in the franchise and the Greater-Scope Villain of the series.
  • The Dreaded: So dreaded, in fact, that Sage even advises Eggman to go back to Cyberspace in order to avoid its reign of terror.
  • Dub Personality Change: The Japanese version has THE END outline its motivations more, as its goals are explicitly stated to bring peace to a chaotic universe and functioning more as a force of nature akin to Galactus. It even has a Graceful Loser attitude as it realizes what hope and life mean.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It's a Planet Eater that wants to break free from containment and consume more worlds, and it doesn't even have a comprehensible form. That being said, while it's extremely focused on consuming, it's far from mindless, being an omniscient being intelligent enough to exploit the problems between Sonic and Sage to free itself.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: It doesn't seem to understand why Sonic is so confident in facing off against it and why he wants to stop it from consuming all existence, believing Sonic to just be arrogant and stupid. In addition, it didn't expect Sonic's friends to help him and for Sage to ally with him.
  • Eviler than Thou: It considers itself to be worse than any threat Sonic had faced before, dismissing them as "finite" while declaring that it is "infinite".
  • Evil Is Bigger: One of the largest villains in the series, if not the largest. While controlling SUPREME, it absolutely dwarfs Super Sonic (though this isn't unusual for Super Sonic fights)... but when it breaks out of the Titan and heads into space, its "Dark Moon" form utterly dwarfs SUPREME itself, now controlled by Sage. This form even dwarfs Earth's moon itself, as it appears to be 3 to 5 times as big as it.
  • Evil Is Petty: If its actions weren't already bad enough before, then after losing, it attempts to kill Sonic and destroy the planet by blowing itself up in pure spite. If it wasn't for Sage performing a Heroic Sacrifice, then everyone on Earth would be dead.
  • Evil Versus Oblivion: The latest in a long line of Eldritch Abominations trying to blow up the planet and all life on it, forcing would-be conquerer Dr. Eggman to team up with the heroes to stop it.
  • Exact Words: The entire gambit it exploits Sonic for in its plans to escape its seal boils down to being as vague as possible about its "aid" and letting him do the rest from there. By simply saying, "Tear down the walls between dimensions," it seems like they're telling Sonic how to free his friends, and that's technically correct; it's just that this would also allow it to escape Cyber Space as well.
  • Expy: Taking Frontiers' inspiration from Evangelion a little further, THE END's moon form resembles the Black Moon from that series. In Evangelion, the Black Moon is also a large purple-ish moon that emits reddish particles, and it has also been concealed for centuries in a sort of prison on Earth. Also like in Frontiers, where the moon form is said to be a shell for THE END's true form, the Black Moon is also said to be the shell for Lilith. Ian Flynn would later allude to this comparison in a Q&A panel, particularly comparing THE END to The Angels from Evangelion, though he also claims that any parellels the game may have to Evangelion likely don't go beyond this.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Pretends to be an ally of Sonic and even after its true nature is revealed, it still speaks to him politely and eloquently, often alternating between complimenting his bravery and insulting his mortality. As its boss fight progresses, however, the mask begins to slip and THE END shows itself to be a remarkably arrogant and spiteful being.
  • Flat Character: Played for Horror. THE END's backstory is a complete mystery, its true form is never revealed, and while it's implied to have some kind of deeper agenda, all the audience (or Sonic) learn is that it wants to destroy the universe seemingly For the Evulz. The complete lack of Character Development or proper motivation compared to other major Sonic villains are exactly what make THE END so terrifying.
  • Foil: THE END can be thought of as the exact inverse of Sonic himself more than any other villain before it. THE END is a looming Eldritch Abomination that wants to box others into a world anathema of light or existence, and tries to crush the hope of those that confront it, thereby being an embodiment of order. On the other hand, Sonic is a free-spirited being that embraces the freedom of others, and always pushes forward no matter how hard things seem, and encourages others to do the same. This makes him an embodiment of chaos (sometimes literally), thereby being a giant middle finger to everything THE END believes in.
  • For the Evulz: THE END doesn't really give much of a reason for why it's destroying so much life, but it seems to be doing it because it can as it is far beyond mortals in power. The closest to a motive it gives is enforcing pure order on a chaotic existence.
  • Genocide Backfire: It attempted to wipe out the Ancients, but the few remaining were able to successfully flee and managed to trap it with the Chaos Emeralds.
  • Genre Refugee: Dark villains are as common as common could be for the Sonic series, but THE END is a Game Changer to the series in that it is precisely a Lovecraftian Horror, making the overarching story of the series into one of cosmic horror. It would have fared better in more mature/seinen game series like Bayonetta or Shin Megami Tensei.
  • God of Evil: Is considered a god stated to be stronger than any other god Sonic has fought in the Sonic franchisenote  and is an Omnicidal Maniac that wants to consume all of existence. To the point of being the Greater-Scope Villain for the franchise.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: It's the ultimate villain to the entire franchise as a whole. For starters, it is the reason why the descendants of the Ancients/Kocos, the Chao and Chaos, just wanted to be left alone in peace until Pachacamac and the Echidna clan wanted the Chaos Emeralds for their own gain. Its actions are also what even got the Chaos Emeralds to Earth in the first place, and thus served as a catalyst for various villains throughout the series, who had wanted to exploit the Emeralds' powers for their own evil plans. Adding to that is that Sonic has essentially been using the power source that's been keeping this thing under control to fight some of his most dangerous foes all throughout, and that many different ancient civilizations have been fighting over and using for centuries. Continued usage of them was apparently enough for THE END to emerge, and have them travel to the Starfall Islands.
  • The Grim Reaper: It's a somewhat unusual take on the trope. Its physical appearance depends on its viewer's perception of death, it seeks to destroy any life it comes across, and it claims itself to be a force above any other godlike beings which Sonic previously fought.
  • Hard Mode Perks: You cannot fight THE END's second phase in the base game unless you play the game on Hard. Even then, the thing proves to be pretty hard in a literal sense too, as it can withstand quite a lot of damage from SUPREME's attacks.
  • Hated by All: Once THE END revealed its true colours, all of the main cast went completely against it, with even Dr. Eggman wanting to stop it.
  • Hero Killer: When it blows itself up in an attempt to kill Sonic and destroy the planet after losing as a form of Taking You with Me, Sage manages to stop it, causing her to seemingly die as a result. The Stinger reveals that Dr. Eggman manages to repair her.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: It's not really known why it wants to destroy everything or where it even came from in the first place, or why it targeted the Ancients.
  • Hope Crusher: It toys with Sonic to make Sonic think he can win before sending him into despair by beating him. It doesn't work out well for it.
  • Hypocrite: Despite its claims about bringing "order" and "neutrality" to the universe, all THE END really does is bring wanton amounts of death and destruction to the rest of the cosmos, and seems to hold all other life forms in contempt.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Throughout its encounter once freed, THE END taunts Super Sonic that it can end this fight any time it wants and consume the planet that Sonic is on. It's just toying with him because it wants to let Sonic think that he's almost won before crushing his hope completely.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Spends the entirety of its boss battle delivering monologue to Sonic that combines this with a Badass Boast.
  • It Can Think: Despite being a giant planet-eating monster, it's intelligent enough to exploit Sonic's lack of knowledge and desire to save his friends and Sage's inability to share knowledge due to circumstances with her creator to aid in breaking itself free from its prison.
  • Jerkass: During its monologue in the game's finale, THE END alternates between explaining its true nature in a condescending manner and just flat-out insulting Sonic.
THE END: I saw your mind. Your courage never wavered. Why? Arrogance? Ignorance? Stupidity?
  • Kill Sat: Its primary method of wreaking havoc. If it's not toying about by bombarding civilizations from space via tons of lasers, it can fire a massive Wave-Motion Gun that can tear a planet in half.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Easily the biggest one in the franchise, as it brings the entire franchise into Cosmic Horror Story territory. And when your rival contenders for the title consist of people like Black Doom, Mephiles, Solaris, Eggman Nega, Dark Gaia and the sort, that is no easy feat to accomplish.
  • Knight Templar: Even without taking into account THE END's personality change in the Japanese dub, its dialogue in the final boss fight strongly implies it sees existence as a meaningless, jumbled mess of uncontrollable chaos, and its actions of wanting to destroy the universe and all of existence by wiping out as many worlds, lives and dimensions as it can to revert it all to nothing is a righteous one performed in order to bring order, neutrality and peace.
  • Lack of Empathy: Doesn't seem to care at all about any of the lives lost when it destroys planets and stars, and even gleefully admits that it's killed countless amounts of people.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: Despite being sealed in Cyberspace, THE END has just enough influence over the outside world to project a voice telling Sonic what to do and where to go.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Taking advantage of Sage capturing Sonic's friends, as well as his escape from Cyber Space, it manipulates Sonic into getting all the Chaos Emeralds to free his friends with Cyber Space, so it also can be freed and destroy countless amounts of planets and stars.
  • Maximum HP Reduction: In the revamped SUPREME/THE END boss fight in The Final Horizon, it shoots energy orbs that shave off Super Sonic's maximum ring count. In the second phase, if Sonic is hit with these attacks, a cutscene plays showing Sonic being knocked out of his Super form. If Sonic has enough rings to survive it (more than 100, to be specific), he'll transform again, but he'll have only 100 rings left.
  • Meaningful Name: In more ways than one, especially considering all of its aliases.
    • True to its name, THE END is an embodiment of finality and order in the universe. It also destroys civilizations, thus putting an "end" to them.
    • THE END, in its truest sense, is simply a void that consumes all, thus it really is the "All-Consuming Void".
    • THE END is referred to as "The True Enemy" in its Boss Subtitles. This in reference to the fact that this thing was essentially the root cause of all of the strife that's happened in the series up to this point.
  • Mysterious Past: Absolutely nothing is known about this thing's origins, except that it wiped the Ancients’ home planet out in the distant past before following the survivors to Earth. Sage claims that the Ancients never lost control of their technology, so it seems unlikely they created it.
  • The Nameless: THE END does not seem to have a proper name, as it is also referred to several other aliases all throughout the adventure. In its monologue, it refers to itself as "The All-Consuming Void".
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: You can't get more overwhelmingly ominous than an unknowable entity known only as THE END.
  • Narcissist: THE END considers itself very highly of, referring to itself as the Top God of the Sonic universe, claiming everything else Sonic has fought is merely "finite" while it is "infinite". In addition, it attempts to destroy everything that isn't itself, seemingly just to satisify its own ego or because it craves destruction.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Were it not for Sage convincing Eggman to ally with Sonic and Sonic's friends willing to help him, then THE END would've won and destroyed the universe.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: THE END doesn't seem to have a confirmed gender, and it has both a feminine voice and a masculine voice.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: It is this trope incarnate, and it even calls itself nothing. In its truest sense, THE END is an endless void that grows and grows by destroying everything around it. Very little is known about what THE END actually is, its origins, or its true motivations. It also proves to be one of the most vile villains in the series, as well as the most destructive, succeeding even Solaris in its kill count.note  To top it all off, the thing doesn't have a concrete form at all. Its "true form" varies between person to person, as it is a projection of their eventual death.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Even though it claims to be bringing "order" and "neutrality" to the chaos of the universe, it's clear that THE END relishes in the destruction and despair it causes, and is simply imposing its own nihilistic philosophy onto the rest of the cosmos.
  • Ominous Visual Glitch: Even putting aside the cases of such tied into Cyber Space and the Cyber Corruption, when THE END hijacks and transforms SUPREME, the Titan's very title card glitches into the name of the Eldritch Abomination currently puppeteering it.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Being a Planet Eater, this is its main goal. It wants to destroy and consume the planet and THE END has stated that it already consumed an innumerable amount of other stars, worlds and people.
THE END: Countless stars. Countless worlds. Countless lives. All fell to me, all brought to nothing.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • In the base game, after Sonic has defeated it while inside of the Titan SUPREME, it retreats into space so that it can begin assuming its true form. Sonic and Sage seemingly interrupt this however, as the latter tosses Sonic into its moon incarnation, causing lasting damage onto it.
    • In the Final Horizon's version of the finale, it takes more direct control of SUPREME, giving it a hand or five with its augmentations.
  • Order Is Not Good: It's the greatest summation of the concept in a world where "Chaos" is a quantifiable energy that can be used for good and ill. THE END is the absence of chaos and all it's responsible for, including and especially life.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Exploited. Despite THE END's actions being the catalyst to the entire franchise's lore, most records of its existence have been lost to time, and neither Sonic, nor Eggman are even aware of its existence before arriving on the Starfall Islands… which THE END happily uses to its advantage.
  • Planet Eater: THE END is described as a consumer of worlds. This is the entire reason it was made a Sealed Evil in a Can in the first place by the Ancients, who lost their own world to it and barely managed to stop its attempt to do this to Sonic's world, and what it intends to resume being once freed, starting with the very planet it was denied last time.
  • The Power of the Void: If its words are to be believed, THE END is the orderly, destructive, cosmic nothingness upon which all chaos, creation, and existence is adrift and counter to. With incarnations such as its moon form merely being avatars to interact with (and destroy) the rest of existence. To paraphrase.
THE END: I am the all-consuming void. What can one mote of golden light illuminate within the abyss? Countless stars. Countless worlds. Countless lives. All fell to me. All brought to nothing. All the teeming chaos of creation? Brought to order. To neutrality. To nothing. ... I am nothing. ... No matter what form I take... THE END comes for you all!
  • Purple Is Powerful: One of the strongest beings in the entire series, capable of destroying entire worlds, and it takes the form of a purple moon to really highlight its level of power.
  • Puzzle Boss: In "The Final Horizon" Update, it will repair and recharge SUPREME no matter how many times Super Sonic depletes its HP. In the first phase, Super Sonic instead has to Cyloop or repeatedly attack the umbilical cable to break it off, then Cyloop SUPREME's rifle port to make it eject the rifle, then finally Cyloop the rifle itself so Eggman can use it, all before THE END sends down a fresh cable. The second phase then has Super Sonic duke it out in a "proper" boss fight of completely depleting its health (and detaching the cable if it reattaches before that can be done).
  • Reality Warper: As soon as it escapes Cyber Space, it indicates its presence by exhibiting static effects in the atmosphere. It also apparently has the ability to tear down the walls between dimensions when it actually does escape, something it previously couldn't do while still imprisoned. During the Final Horizon, it even gives SUPREME extra arms it implicitly didn’t have before.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Or rather, the closest thing it has to eyes. During its boss battle, it will shoot reddish lasers from a part of its moon form. You'll know in advance where it is from the glowing red part.
  • Sadist: It enjoys causing as much destruction as possible, doesn't mind seeing Sonic getting trapped in dimensions which causes Sonic to feel absolute agony and also attempts to destroy all of Sonic's hopes of winning.
  • Secondary Color Nemesis: Its moon and mist forms are a purplish-red, and it's pretty much the ultimate evil of the series.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: It's been sealed on the island archipelago by the Chaos Emeralds. However, it breaks free when Sonic is tricked into setting THE END loose.
  • Smug Snake: In the base game's final boss, it boasts about how all-powerful it is and how much it took the Ancients to seal it away, but goes down with relative ease through the efforts of Sonic (as Super Sonic) and Sage (piloting the SUPREME Titan) albeit, the latter had to sacrifice herself to do so. To its credit, in the "Final Horizon" Update's revised final boss, Sonic had to harness his cyber-corruption to boost the power of his super form to overcome it and then boost it again when that proved insufficient, so its boasting isn't without some merit.
  • Star Killing: While it hasn't been seen doing this onscreen, it has claimed to have destroyed stars alongside planets.
  • Straw Nihilist: THE END undoubtedly embodies nihilism and through its perspective, life, existence and the universe is worthless, meaningless and in its words, teeming with chaos, due to how unpredictable it is, and so, by destroying all of existence and reverting the universe to nothing, The End believes that true order can be obtained and took on the role as a personification of death to do so, intending on bringing about the end of everything as we know it. However, its "noble" goals are merely delusions brought on by its arrogant nature and nihilistic thoughts, as it forces its beliefs onto countless civilizations because it views itself as the ultimate authority, showing that its delusions are solely motivated by ego. Subsequently, while it does believe what it's doing is right, it isn't above toying with others for no reason other than sheer sadism, showing that it takes pleasure in what it does. It also believed that the combined efforts of Super Sonic and the Titan SUPREME wouldn't be able to defeat it, comparing them to the lengths that the Ancients went to when imprisoning it. It declared Sonic’s past foes finite, while declaring itself infinite, even to the point of considering itself as "nothing”. To drive this home, the last lines of its monologue are as follow:
THE END: You strike this incarnation with all your might. It changes nothing. You are not brave. You are not victorious. No matter what form I take... THE END comes for you all!
  • Super-Toughness: It easily brushed off quite a bit of firepower from the Ancients, including from huge energy turrets that Tails claims are only slightly weaker than the planet-cracking Eclipse Cannon individually. It takes the combined effort of Super Sonic and the Sage-controlled Titan SUPREME (itself comparable to Super Sonic) to finally land a meaningful blow in the base game ending, and the full power of Super Sonic supercharged on his Cyber Corruption to finish it and the enhanced SUPREME off in the Final Horizon update.
  • Taking You with Me: It decides to blow itself up after losing in an effort to kill Sonic and wipe out the Earth, causing Sage to stop it by sacrificing herself.
  • That's No Moon: After THE END escapes from SUPREME, the camera cuts to a shot of the moon from space, only for a different purple-tinted moon to appear in front of it. Then the camera zooms in very close while Boss Subtitles appear, revealing that THE END is that purple moon.
  • Time Abyss: At the very least it is as old as the Ancients, if not even older, and it claims that the time it's been sealed in Cyber Space is "time immemorial".
  • Top God: Confirmed at best and Zig-zagged at worst. On the one hand, it claims to be beyond any machine or god Sonic has fought before, with Sage noting even Super Sonic can't stop it completely—and in the DLC, it's powerful enough to de-power a boosted Super Sonic, needing Cyber Super Sonic to beat it in a far more timely manner than the base game. However, on the other hand, it DOES limit this boast to only gods Sonic himself knowingly fought. *But*, one the OTHER other hand, while that may SEEM to exclude Solaris due to the time reboot at the end of his game, Sonic HAS been hinted and alluded to have retained his memories of Sonic 06 and thus Solaris by extension (albeit in Japanese scripts). Even then, though, remembering or not, THE END has achieved things that Solaris has not despite the latter's supposed superiority. Hence the "Zig-zagged at worst" above. Officially speaking however, as far as approved material goes until word from the likes of Iizuka or Kishimoto say otherwise, THE END is a tenuously confirmed case for now.
  • Treacherous Advisor: Encourages Sonic to rescue his friends, take down the Titans, and obtain the Chaos Emeralds, just so it can resume consuming worlds.
  • True Final Boss: In the base game, it can only be properly fought by the player in Hard Mode. And it's a completely different monster than anything else Sonic fights usually are. Averted in the "Final Horizon" Update, where it takes more direct control of SUPREME no matter what difficulty is selected.
  • Unexpected Shmup Level: The fight against its moon form in the base game is this. You are controlling both Sonic and Sage as you are shooting projectiles at it.
  • Viler New Villain: THE END claims to be the most heinous and least sympathetic villain in Sonic Frontiers, and one of the darkest in the series due to it attempting to destroy everything for seemingly no reason whatsoever; being exceedingly arrogant, boastful, petty, and a Narcissist with a Lack of Empathy; and seemingly going out of its way just to drive species to extinction, to the point where it chases the Ancients to kill the remaining few left after they flee from their planet's destruction. Dr. Eggman is shown to have plenty of sympathetic qualities in Frontiers such as his love for Sage and Sage herself is also an Anti-Villain who wants to keep THE END sealed from Cyberspace due to the damage it'll cause, and holds no ill will towards Sonic and wants a family relationship with Dr. Eggman.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: THE END is the main reason why Sonic Frontiers is one of the darkest games in the franchise. It's responsible for a large majority of the bad events in the franchise, and is a massive Omnicidal Maniac that wants to destroy the universe, making it one of the most twisted villains in the series, alongside Black Doom, Mephiles/Solaris, Erazor Djnn and Infinite.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Considering everything it said beforehand, it likely does not take being defeated by Sonic and Sage well at all, and resorted to blowing itself up in order to kill the both of them and wipe out Earth at the same time. All because it cannot accept the reality of being defeated by "lesser" beings.
  • The Voice: It presents itself as a disembodied voice to Sonic when he escapes Cyber Space for the first time, and all throughout his adventure.
  • Voice of the Legion: As the voice credits above may show, THE END speaks in both a masculine and feminine tone.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's impossible to talk about THE END without revealing where it comes from, what it wants, and its greater impact on the overall story of Sonic as a franchise.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: In the memory where the Ancients unleashed their energy turrets (which Tails noted individually were likely only slightly less powerful than the planet-destroying Eclipse Cannon) on THE END, it responded after tanking all their fire by unleashing a massive laser beam bigger than all the turrets combined. A weaker version is also one of its attacks during the base game’s True Final Boss.
  • Worf Had the Flu: It was basically unbeatable despite fighting against four Titans in its prime, and needing to be sealed away inside of the Titan SUPREME instead. Each of those Titans individually were so powerful that Sonic needed to go Super Sonic just to level the playing field, and he still had a rough time, given those Titans were still capable of killing him. If THE END hadn't been weakened from being sealed for so long, and he had to fight it alone without the aid of Sage, Sonic very likely would have lost against it. The fight against it in "The Final Horizon" only further cements this, as only by supercharging his Super form with Cyber Corruption (plus the minor help of Eggman, Sage, and his friends) is Sonic able to stand up to THE END powering up the Titan SUPREME for the final showdown.
  • Worthy Opponent: Begrudgingly sees the Ancients as this, and views Sonic and his allies as Sucksessors (which makes its aformentioned Villainous Breakdown all the more cathartic).
THE END: My captors bent time and space! ...My captors built a whole reality to contain me! ...My captors burnt their souls away to fuel their engines! ...And you? ...You glitter! ...You fly above me like a gnat!
  • You Cannot Grasp the True Form: invokedGoing by Koshimoto, THE END's true form isn't revealed because it depends on how the character perceives death.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Sonic gets tricked into freeing it from Cyber Space, it attempts to kill Sonic and the entire planet. It even says that Sonic has served his purpose in the final battle.
  • Your Size May Vary: It looks the size of an actual moon or planet in some cutscenes. During the actual Final Battle, however, it only looks to be about a mile or so across (based on SUPREME's size relative to it, and it seems even smaller in the scene where Super Sonic rams into it.

The Deadly Six

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/deadly_six_group_2942.png
From left to right: Zazz, Zor, Zavok, Zomom, Zeena, Master Zik

The villainous team in Sonic Lost World. They are Zeti, a race of creatures who reside on the Lost Hex, where the game takes place. After Eggman tries to control them to take over the world, they rebel and decide to take it over themselves. They are composed of Zavok (red), Zazz (pink), Zeena (green), (Master) Zik (blue), Zomom (orange), and Zor (purple).

  • A Villain Named "Z__rg": They and their species name all share the first letter "Z".
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: With the exception of Master Zik, who seems to be the only member that wears proper attire.
  • Achilles' Heel: The Cacophonic Conch, which emits a Brown Note that neutralizes their electromagnetic powers and debilitates them. So it really sucks for everyone when Sonic kicks the conch away, letting them run amok uninhibited.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: You can't get much more bastardly than trying to render an entire planet inhospitable just to spite two people, the one who controlled you and the one who defeated you. (And enhance your own powers.)
  • All There in the Manual:
    • The official Japanese Sonic YouTube channel featured a video introducing the Zeti, with the description revealing their roles in the Deadly Six. Zavok is the leader, Zazz is the special attack combatant, Zomom is the saboteur, Zik is the advisor, Zeena is the info manager, and Zor is the spy.
    • Strangely, not all of the Zeti are properly introduced in the story; Zor and Zomom are indirectly named by Zavok and Zeena's Boss Banter, while Zavok and Zeena themselves are never named at all, despite the former in particular becoming the main antagonist after they overthrow Eggman.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: The Deadly Six are quite the Quirky Miniboss Squad. With each of their unique personality traits (Zazz's Blood Knight tendencies, Zomom's appetite, Zeena's narcissism, and Zor's nihilism), they're very comical. But they're far from harmless and they truly live up to their title.
  • Boss Banter: Oh you bet they do. Even in the levels before their boss fights they are constantly talking to Sonic from the background.
  • Bring It: Zik does this gesture before his second fight, as does Zavok before his first fight, right after flexing his shoulder.
  • Brown Note: The Six are kept in line by Eggman blowing into a Cacophonic Conch, making a noise which causes them pain.
  • Color-Coded Characters: They've each got one predominant color: red (Zavok), pink (Zazz), green (Zeena), blue (Zik), orange/yellow (Zomom), and purple (Zor).
  • The Comically Serious: Zavok and Master Zik's attempts to come off as intimidating are usually ruined by their teammates' wackiness. In fact, Zavok is treated quite seriously and lacks quirks in his appearances.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: All of them have this to some extent.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Wanting revenge for being enslaved by Eggman? Understandable. Destroying the world and stealing its energy to do that? Overkill.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Once Eggman's Cacophonic Conch is kicked away by Sonic.
Zavok: Strike, brothers! Make the fool pay for our abuse and enslavement!
  • The Dragon: Unwilling ones to Eggman at the beginning of Sonic Lost World, kept in line by the Cacophonic Conch. Zavok reprises this role in Sonic Forces for reasons unknown. Subverted in that the Zavok in Forces is revealed to be an impostor.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Once Sonic kicks the conch away, they quickly hand Eggman their resignation.
  • Dub Name Change: The Deadly Six are known as the “(Eggman) Six Oni Band” in Japanese.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: Strangely, even though the Zeti are openly displayed on the game's cover and in advertisements, the game keeps all of them except Zavok in shadows until the part of the story where each one becomes relevant.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Seems to be Zavok's relationship with the others. They are all on a first-name basis with each other, Zavok even calling them "brothers" at one point. And though they do frustrate him at times, he rarely mistreats them (besides an off-hand comment from Zazz about impending punishment for losing to Sonic).
  • Evil vs. Evil: Zavok and his Deadly Six are enemies to both Eggman and Sonic... Depending on the Writer.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Zavok, Zazz, and Zeena. Though hers is a case of Cute Little Fangs.
  • Flat Character: Each Zeti was explicitly written and designed around one defining trait so that their personalities could be deciphered from a quick glance.
  • Flight: The 3DS version give them all the ability to fly.
  • Foil: To Dr. Eggman. Eggman is a Mad Scientist while the Deadly Six are all mystical beings. Eggman wants to conquer the world while the Zeti wish to destroy it and everyone on it. Eggman, despite his frequent Beware the Silly Ones moments, is more prone to comical moments while Zavok, the leader of the Zeti, is a full No-Nonsense Nemesis. Eggman is a Bad Boss to most of his creations while some the Zeti have some degree of respect towards each other.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Zavok and Zazz are playable in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Zavok also apparently ditched the Deadly Six to join Team Eggman in Team Sonic Racing for some unexplained reason.
  • Hollywood Magnetism: The Six have the innate ability to manipulate electromagnetic fields, allowing them to take control of machines.
  • In a Single Bound: They are all capable of leaping incredible heights and distances. The 3DS version gives them the ability to outright fly.
  • Laughably Evil: Unlike many previous examples in the series, however, they're evidently quirky and try to make a laugh out of their antics. By invokedWord of God, they were described as made to "bring a sense of danger and humor" to Sonic Lost World.
  • Lean and Mean: In addition to being bad guys, Zazz and Zeena are pretty thin.
  • Leitmotif: They have three variations of it:
    • One that's jazzy (played in their Zone 2 fights).
    • One that's orchestrated (played in Zone 4 fights and Zavok's Sky Road Zone 2 fight).
    • A chaotic mix played during the refights in Lava Mountain.
    • Zavok has his own leitmotif when fighting him in Sky Road Zone 4 and in the Lava Mountain refight before he turns giant. The boss fight with him in Forces has an aggressive, techno remix of his theme from Lost World.
    • And aside from their collective Leitmotif, they each have their own themes that play in cutscenes.
      • Zavok is accompanied by a sinister violin theme.
      • Master Zik's theme sounds like woodwind music that plays in kung fu movies.
      • Zazz has a punk rock theme that befits his rock star appearance.
      • Zomom has a tuba that plays in his theme.
      • Zeena's Leitmotif is accompanied by a Sexophone.
      • Zor's theme is a somber piano mix of the Deadly Six theme.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Zavok and Zomom stand out as the physically strongest of the Six and are much faster than their sizes imply.
  • Magnetism Manipulation: They can manipulate electromagnetic fields.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Oh, surely these "Deadly Six" guys wouldn't hurt a fly?
  • No Name Given: Zavok and Zeena's names are never mentioned in-game by any of the characters in Sonic Lost World. It's specially baffling considering how relevant Zavok became in later games.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: They're based on oni, so their designs are rather striking compared to the anthropomorphic animals that the series is known for.
  • Not Quite Dead: They disappeared in the last cutscene of Lost World, leading to some fans presume they died. Further appearances from Sonic Lost World and the Loose Canon Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW) means they are alive (one of the mandates of the comic is that villains who passed away cannot return, though they did definitively survive the 3DS version which could be a loophole).
  • Obviously Evil: Zavok and Zazz do not look like the members most likely to cuddle Cream the Rabbit. They are creatures with horns and fangs, looking like a stylized Japanese demon.
  • Older Than They Look: You thought Zik was old? Zazz is 127 years old! In fact, they're ALL aged over 100. The former, however… appears to be 1,036 years old.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: The Six plan to use Eggman's unstable Extractor machine to drain all the energy of the world at once, destroying the planet itself as revenge for their imprisonment. They don't like the inhabitants of the planet.
  • Oni: The Six are based on oni, and are known in Japanese as the "Rokkishu" ("Six Oni Band").
  • Personality Powers: Some of the Six have powers that reflect their personality.
  • Planet Looters: Eggman's plan was to use his Extractor machine to drain the planet's energy and power his machines, but as it was unstable, he decided to drain a little bit at a time. The Six plan to use the machine to drain all of the planet's energy at once, thus destroying it and making themselves stronger.
  • Pstandard Psychic Pstance: They're shown placing their fingers on her foreheads before activating their Magnetism Manipulation on Eggman's Badniks.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: With the slight subversion in that they become the Big Bads by World 2, but they never lose their quirkiness.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: An Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy, an Old Master, an Ax-Crazy Blood Knight, an Extreme Omnivore, a nihlistic goth, and a narcissistic Alpha Bitch.
  • Really 700 Years Old: All of them are at least a century old, yet still look fairly young (except Master Zik, who's over a millennium old).
  • Recurring Boss: Each of the Deadly Six are fought three times throughout Sonic Lost World. They also are the most recurrent enemies not affiliated with Eggman throughout the series, reappearing in several spin-off games.
  • Recurring Element: A demonic monster who overthrows Eggman as the Big Bad. However, this time there's six of them, and it happens at the beginning rather than the end. Unlike previous monsters, the Zeti have cartoonish personalities rather than the force of nature monsters Chaos and Dark Gaia. May also count as one in relation to Generations, as Eggman reclaims the Big Bad status from them after their defeat.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Six are all opposites of each other in some way. Bonus points in that they resemble actual demons.
    • Zavok is the red to Master Zik's blue, even reflected in their colors. And the two of them serve as the blue to the others' red.
    • Zazz is the red to Zomom's blue.
    • Zeena serves as the red to Zor's blue.
  • Restraining Bolt: Eggman tortures them with a Cacophonic Conch to keep them in line. Once Sonic kicks it away, the Zeti bite back.
  • Roar Before Beating: Zazz and Zomom let out a roar at the start of their second and third fights, though in the latter's case, it's technically just a really loud burp. Zavok also starts his final fight in Lost World and his sole fight in Forces with a roar.
  • Sadist: All of the Deadly Six display some level of sadism, though Zazz stands out among them as the most sadistic.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: More or less based on this, though there is only six of them.
  • The Starscream: They initially served under Dr. Eggman, but rebel against him after he loses his means of controlling them.
  • Super-Strength: While all of them have this to varying degrees, especially when they're hopped up on Earth's energy, Zavok and Zomom stand out.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Their plan for Eggman. After he spends the early parts of the game enslaving them to do his bidding, they proceed to use their technomanipulation to exploit his powers for their own purposes.
  • Technopath: Through their innate ability to manipulate electromagnetic fields, they are able to control machines, including Eggman's robots.
  • Tough Spikes and Studs: Zavok, Zazz and Zomom wears spiked bracelets. Zazz also wears a spiked collar, and Zavok has spiky shoulders. All three are as deadly as their team name implies.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: While initially working with Eggman, they very quickly decide to rebel. They also invoke this on Eggman's badniks.
  • Uncertain Doom: It's not really clear what happened to them after their final encounters with Sonic in Sonic Lost World — at least in the Wii U version, though it is worth noting that Zazz, Zomom, Master Zik, and Zeena fall motionless and explode in a puff of smoke, while Zor and Zavok fall into lava. In the 3DS version, all of them are shown flying away after being defeated at Lava Mountain.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Even though Sonic freed them from Eggman's control (which was the only reason they'd been fighting him in the first place), he isn't spared from their rebellion.

    Zavok
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zavok_slw.png
One by one, your friends are falling. Soon you'll be all alone.
Voiced by: Joji Nakata (Japanese); Travis Willingham (English, 2013-2017), Patrick Seitz (English, 2019-present)additional VAs

The leader of the Deadly Six, and a proud and strong Zeti. After being liberated by Sonic from Dr. Eggman's control, Zavok led his group against both Sonic and the doctor. He then took over Eggman's Extractor machine, using it to suck the life out of the planet and empower himself and his allies.

Zavok was cast as one of Eggman's top minions by Infinite in Sonic Forces. By the time of Team Sonic Racing, Zavok apparently no longer leads the Deadly Six and is hired by Eggman to help steal tech from Dodon Pa.

  • Advancing Boss of Doom: Zavok's final battle with Sonic in Sonic Lost World has him growing to giant size and chasing the blue hedgehog as he climbs a tower.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Zavok is proud of his strength. His second boss battle in Lost World has him fighting Sonic mano a mano, but he knows when he is beaten, and chooses to destroy the mecha dragon they're on just to stop Sonic.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Zavok at his "full strength" turns giant. He doesn't particulary change his appearance, only his size.
  • Bad Boss: Aside from Zik, his master and former leader, Zavok doesn't appear to hold his subordinates in high regard. When the fake animal capsule captures Tails instead of Sonic, Zavok chastises his subordinates as too incompetent to handle anything despite their lack of input in the matter. His background monologue in Sky Road Zone 2 has him comtemplate replacing them with new Zeti when the hedgehog that keeps besting them initially doesn't seem like a big deal. Zazz fears that he'll get a beating from Zavok after his final loss to Sonic.
  • Baritone of Strength: Zavok is a force to be reckoned with, and most of his incarnations have a deep faux voice. Comes with the voice acting of Joji Nakata, Travis Willingham and Patrick Seitz.
  • Big Bad: Of Sonic Lost World. Well, for most of it, anyway.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Zavok is the only one with eyebrows (well, a unibrow). And it's thick and cyan, emphatizing his oni/Japanese demon influence.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: In Lost World, instead of personally supervising the roboticization of Tails, he and Zomom just leave him all alone in the lab. Being The Smart Guy he is, Tails successfully modifies the machine he's bound to to his own advantage. Though in fairness, it's not his fault alone.
  • Breath Weapon: Zavok can fire beams and fireballs from his mouth during his final battle in Sonic Lost World.
  • The Charmer: Zavok knows exactly what to say to convince Zeena to attack Sonic.
Zavok: Why are you still here?
    Zeena: I'm just getting ready.
Zavok: Well you seem to be taking your time.
Zeena: Well it is my time to take now, isn't it?
Zavok: Well what if I told you that you were the only one I trusted to be fast enough...
    Zeena: Oh?
    Zavok: smart enough...
    Zeena: Mmm-hmm.
    Zavok: ...and pretty enough...
    Zeena: Go on.
Zavok: to beat the blue nuisance?
Zeena: Well, I'd say you got the right girl for the job! (gets up, does a Hair Flip and leaves.)
Zavok: Well, that was so easy I almost feel guilty.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Zavok has his moments. His first line of dialogue is mocking Eggman as a "conqueror".
Eggman: Transformation 101, bunnies to badniks! Boom! Instant army! Instant army! It needs to be a big army if i'm taking over the world below!
Zavok: You are quite the mighty conqueror.
  • Depending on the Writer: Zavok has a different interpretation in his three game appearances. The one in Forces is justified, as that's an illusion, but that doesn't explain his appearance in Team Sonic Racing, where he is fine and dandy working with Eggman again despite the fact he hates him in Lost World. He's also considerably hammier than he was in Lost World. His later apperances in the IDW comics would bring him back to be more in line with how he was in Lost World.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Despite being the main threat for most of Lost World, Eggman ultimately lands the role of the game's Final Boss.
  • The Dragon: For some reason, he is Eggman's lackey in Team Sonic Racing. See Depending on the Writer.
  • Dragon Rider: Zavok controls mechanical, serpentine dragons with his color scheme in Sky Road. Zone 2, with the theme "Dragon Dance", largely consists of Sonic racing over platforms before they're destroyed by the dragons charging into them or roaring. Zavok rides on one for his first battle, and the second one takes place entirely on one which Zavok gradually breaks. The boss fight with him in Forces has him riding a robotic wasp instead.
  • Energy Weapon: The boss fight with Zavok in the 3DS version has him commanding his dragon mech to form rotating ring around him while firing red laser beams. His wasp mech in Forces can also fire lasers from its six legs.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The first cutscene showing Zavok tells you what you need to know about him: quiet and patient, interested in learning about his foes before attacking, while sarcastic towards his "boss" and praising his comrade.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: While his relationship with most of the Deadly Six is questionable, Zavok does appear to genuinely respect his master. In the Japanese version, he addresses him with keigo even while currently outranking him.
Master Zik: It would seem the peaceful days of tending my garden will have to wait while I take care of these matters the rest of you cannot.
Zavok: Please, Master Zik; this is not something you should trouble yourself with. It's beneath you.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Knuckles. Not only are the both of them red brawlers who're native to floating landmasses, they were also pitted against Sonic by Dr. Eggman in their respective debuts (on a minor note, they were also both voiced by Travis Willingham in Lost World). However, that's where the similarities end. Knuckles's Red Is Heroic while Zavok is Red and Black and Evil All Over. Our favorite echidna is a loner who's the Last of His Kind, in contrast to Zavok, who's the leader of the Deadly Six, a vicious gang of fellow Zeti. Knuckles only antagonized Sonic due to being tricked by Eggman and would go on to become one of his closest friends. While Zavok was initially enslaved by the mad doctor, the moment Sonic frees Zavok and his kin, they instantly prove themselves to be even worse than him.
  • Evil Gloating: He and Zazz contact Sonic and Eggman halfway through Frozen Factory to brag about destroying their world to strengthen themselves with Eggman's Extractor. Zavok's then confronts Sonic in Sky Road to rattle him with their plan to turn their captive Tails into a robot.
  • Evil Knockoff: The Zavok shown in Forces is revealed to be a Virtual Reality construct created by Infinite with the power of the Phantom Ruby.
  • Evil Laughter: Zavok does this on occasion.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Zavok has a cold, deep sounding voice, and is the evilest of the Deadly Six.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Speaks in a very calm and eloquent tone most of the time, even while plotting to murder Sonic and destroy the planet.
  • Flunky Boss: The boss fight with Zavok in Forces has him summon smaller versions of his wasp mech.
  • Genius Bruiser: Zavok is not only a powerful fighter, but capable of using Eggman's technology after the Zeti overthrow him.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: Zavok's second boss fight combines this with Ring-Out Boss. Sonic and Zavok fight on top a robot dragon and after taking damage, Zavok will retreat to another part of the robot. The final leg of the fight involves Sonic attempting to knock him off the robot dragon.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Zavok, for some reason, is playable and working for Eggman in Team Sonic Racing. This is despite the fact he isn't getting paid for his work.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Zavok mainly uses his fists in battle. This gets taken to its logical conclusion in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games where he serves as both the main opponent and a playable character in Boxing matches.
  • Hidden Depths: For all of his villainous tendencies, Zavok in the non-canon Rio 2016 Olympic Games is shown to be a Spirited Competitor and enjoys the chance to improve his skills.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His final battle in Lost World starts with him on red blocks which he can stomp down on Sonic. Once he grows giant and starts chasing Sonic upward, the hedgehog defeats him by bouncing those same blocks down on him.
  • Knight of Cerebus: While the rest of the Deadly Six are Laughably Evil caricatures, Zavok is a cold, calculating No-Nonsense Nemesis, who even Sonic takes seriously.
  • Knuckle Cracking: Zavok does this at the beginning of his second fight, in which he attacks primarily with punches. He also flexes his right shoulder in the first fight, even though he's fighting much less directly.
  • Make My Monster Grow: Zavok's final fight with Sonic in Sonic Lost World has him growing to a giant size while chasing him up a tower.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Zavok knows exactly what to say to motivate Zeena. He does the same to Zazz in the non-canon Sonic Runners; he knows very well that Zazz can't beat Sonic, no matter how hard he tries, but the data Zazz collects may one day allow them to defeat Sonic.
  • No Mouth: At first glance, Zavok appears to have an underbite with large red fangs, but this is merely a protrusion obscuring his actual mouth.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Zavok's cunning and cruelty serves to contrast him from his generally quirky Zeti comrades. The closest he gets to comedy is joining in on the group's "We know!" when Zor starts telling everyone that their trap didn't catch Sonic after they've already seen Tails inside. His first boss fight forgoes the Deadly Six's initial theme in favor of its more menacing orchestral reprise generally reserved for the Zetis' second fights, and his own second fight uses an even more sinister personal theme.
  • Playing with Fire: During his final fight with Sonic in Lost World, Zavok initially shoots fireballs from his hands. Once he grows giant and starts climbing up the walls, he shoots them from his mouth instead.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Though he despises being enslaved by Eggman, Zavok still commits to the role for a while in order to learn more about Sonic since he knew full well that Sonic would end up opposing him whenever they broke free.
  • Prepare to Die:
Zavok: Your fate is to be destroyed. Why don't you just accept that, lie down and die?!
  • Punny Name: "Zavok" sounds similar to "havoc".
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Zavok prides himself as the strongest warrior of the Zeti race, and takes joy in competing against others and improving his skills.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Zavok's primary color is red with elements of black, and he's the leader of the villainous Deadly Six.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: Zavok in Forces would be much harder to fight if he remained in midair throughout the fight, but he constantly tries to impale Sonic with the wasp mech's stinger, the force of the impact launching Sonic high enough into the air to land a Homing Attack.
  • Turns Red: After being reduced to half health during the boss fight in Forces, Zavok reduces the size of the platform Sonic is fighting on and starts using a Dash Attack with the stinger on his wasp mech.]
  • Worthy Opponent: Zavok would consider Sonic one if he wasn't such a nuisance.

    Zazz
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zazz_speed_battle.png
I've been itching for a fight all day!
Voiced by: Yutaka Aoyama (Japanese); Liam O'Brien (English)additional VAs

The most manic of the Deadly Six, characterized by his love for fighting and his erratic outbursts.

  • Angrish: Delves into incoherent rage halfway through his final fight with Sonic.
    Zazz: I'm gonna... ARRGHAUUUGH!
  • Ax-Crazy: Zazz is the most feral and manic of the Six.
  • Blood Knight: Zazz likes fighting quite a bit. So much so that his official profiles state he loves fighting more than eating three meals a day, and that holding him back from a fight will send him into a rage.
Zazz: I feel like destroying something!
Zavok: That's what I like about you, Zazz. Always ready for a fight, even before you know what you're fighting.
Zazz: You bet! Bring it on, and I'll rip it up!
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Zazz in spades. It helps that he has No Indoor Voice.
  • Delinquent Hair: Zazz sports a purple mohawk.
  • Fangs Are Evil: The first thing to notice about Zazz is his wide mouth, full of fangs. It gives him the impression of being a maniac, which is quite accurate.
  • Flaying Alive: During his second fight with Sonic, Zazz explicitly threatens to skin him alive.
  • Fragile Speedster: He's fast enough to keep up with Sonic, but is weak without his Moon Mech backing him up and doesn't take many hits to defeat.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Zazz has the shortest one of the lot.
  • Hidden Depths: Zazz in the non-canon Rio 2016 Olympic Games is shown to be surprisingly good at tennis.
  • Hot-Blooded: Zazz has a low temper, wants to constantly fight, and threatens people. He's not exactly calm, to say the least.
  • Ki Manipulation: Zazz can create energy attacks when hopped up on Earth's energy.
  • Large Ham: You can tell Liam O'Brien was having fun with Zazz, as in every scene he's in, he chews the scenery all the way.
  • Lean and Mean: Zazz is the thinnest of the six, and the most violent of them all.
  • Maniac Tongue: He's an unstable villain who leaves his tongue out.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Zazz's lanky physigue doesn't stop him from being able to lift, carry, and throw his Moon Mech like it's nothing.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Zazz gets all up in Sonic's face during the cutscene before their second fight.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: His thin blue tongue constantly hangs from his mouth.
  • Promoted to Playable: Zazz is playable in the Olympic Games.
  • Psycho Pink: A male one; he's violent, unstable, evil, and has pink.
  • Ragin' Cajun: Zazz sports a slight, but noticeable Cajun accent.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Zazz has magenta skin, and has no feminine attributes to his personality.
  • Sadist: All of the Deadly Six display some level of sadism, though Zazz stands out among them as the most sadistic.
  • Slasher Smile: Zazz's default expression, complete with a vicious laughter.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: In the Japanese version, he yells "Kill Sonic!" (written in English within Japanese subtitles) as Zavok sends him out to fight the blue hedgehog. He also yells "Go to hell!" halfway through his first fight with Sonic, and toward Sonic and Eggman's group while mocking them over their dying planet.

    Zomom
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sonic_lost_world___zomom_1.png
I think I'll have you for dessert!
Voiced by: Chafurin (Japanese); Patrick Seitz (English)additional VAs

A not so bright Zeti, who has a passion for eating.

  • Abusive Mom: Zomom apparently had a mother with zero faith in him:
Zomom: Mom was right — I'm a failure!
  • Acrofatic: Zomom is quite agile for such a big guy.
  • Bald of Evil: Zomom is the only member with no hair.
  • The Brute: Zomom isn't particulary bright, and is instead very slow-witted. He is however a force to be reckoned with due to his physical strength.
  • Dig Attack: Zomom changes the location of his second fight by digging, with Sonic using a Drill Wisp to follow him. He also tries to attack Sonic from underground in his final fight.
  • Dumb Muscle: Zomom is a fighter and he isn't very bright. Like Big the Cat, he speaks with a Simpleton Voice.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Zomom is said to "eat everything in sight" and threatens to eat Sonic and Eggman at different points.
  • Fat and Proud: Zomom will freely admit that he's big. He won't react well to anyone else calling him fat, though...
  • Fat Bastard: Zomom, again. He's overweight and openly hostile to his enemies who he wishes to devour.
  • Fat Idiot: He's overweight and unintelligent.
  • Food Slap: Zomom repeatedly swats Sonic with his excessively large sandwich for annoying him while trying to eat it.
  • Gonk: While the Zeti in general have unusual designs for the series, Zomom in particular is obese, has Fish Eyes and messy teeth, and lacks hair.
  • Ground Pound: In his first fight, Zomom slams down on the arena to make it rotate and occasionally knock it far below Sonic's feet. In the first half of his second fight, his ground pound now functions as a Shockwave Stomp, stunning Sonic if he's still on the ground when Zomom lands.
  • Ground-Shattering Landing: When Eggman tosses a sandwich to Zomom as incentive to defeat Sonic, he breaks part of the floor after jumping up to catch it, nearly making the Doctor fall over from the vibration.
  • Hidden Depths: Zomom has low self-esteem, wondering if it's possible to make him look worse, telling Sonic not to make fun of his size as it's hurtful, and upon being defeated for the last time, saying that his mother was right about him being a failure. This can be seen during the scene where Eggman scolds the Deadly Six, with Zomom being the only one hurt by the doctor words.
  • Informed Ability: According to official Japanese material, Zomom acts as the group’s saboteur. A bit hard to believe given his in-game portrayal as a Fat Idiot with a one-track mind for eating.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: The ever-hungry Zomom inexplicably leaves a half-eaten sandwich behind so Tails can use the toothpick to sabotage his own Unwilling Roboticisation.
  • Primal Chest-Pound: Zomom begins his final fight with Sonic by drumming his large gut before letting out a large burp.
  • Simple-Minded Wisdom: Zomom isn't particularly smart, but his more simplistic mindset and motives mean Sonic's usual quips meant to throw his opponents off don't dig quite as deep.
Sonic: One word of helpful advice: diet and exercise.
  • Spin Attack: He spins around fast enough to create a sandstorm in his second fight, though he leaves himself vulnerable from dizziness afterward.
  • Villainous Glutton: He's practically gluttony personified. He's always eating something or complaining that he's hungry. During his boss fight, he holds a large piece of meat. He mentions wanting to eat Sonic, Tails, and Eggman several times. In one cutscene, Eggman even specifies getting the Six a large sandwich while angrily listing the things he did for them, and Zomom looks very ashamed.

    Master Zik
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zik.png
I shall prepare for you a lesson in respect. A painful lesson.
Voiced by: Mugihito (Japanese); Kirk Thornton (English)additional VAs

The oldest member of the Deadly Six, being 1000 years old. Master Zik trained Zavok in the arts of fighting.

  • Abnormal Ammo: Zik uses mechanical fruit as attacks in his boss fight.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: The only aversion in the group. He wears a black suit.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Zik wields a staff that's bigger than him. He usually stands on top of it.
  • Evil Mentor: Master Zik is Zavok's master. Zavok holds him in high regard, and Zik respects his student as well. Zazz also addresses him as "Master".
  • Evil Old Folks: Zik is the oldest of the team. While the other five are a hundred years old, Zik is a thousand.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Zik is by far the oldest member of the six, as well as the shortest.
  • Old Master: Zik is this to Zavok. He's even sometimes known as Master Zik.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Zik is the smallest of the group, yet is just as deadly as the rest.
  • Retired Badass: Master Zik founded the Deadly Six a long time ago (hey, he's only 1036) and, while having let his pupil Zavok take up the role of leader, still remains a part of the Six and is just as dangerous as he ever was.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: After a couple of defeats for the Deadly Six, Zik throws his figurative hat into the ring, under the impression he must do so to "take care of these matters the rest of you cannot." The sentiment vanishes after his own trouncing at Sonic's hands. He goes into his final fight proclaiming that he won't hold back, only to shame Sonic for beating an old man when he loses once more.

    Zeena
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zeenasfsb.png
You're going to pay for that!
...As soon as my nails dry.
Voiced by: Yumi Touma (Japanese); Stephanie Sheh (English)additional VAs

The sole female member of the Deadly Six, Zeena is a narcissistic but lazy creature.

  • Alpha Bitch: A vain female Zeti who isn't pleasant to be around. She is written almost like a girl in high school.
  • Animal Motifs: Zeena's single, curved horn, curled tail, green hair, and green skin tone make her look rather chameleon-like.
  • Beauty Is Bad: She's by far the best-looking member of the Deadly Six. She flirts with Sonic, but he doesn't have any interest in her. She's easy on the eyes at worst and at best is very pretty, although her personality makes her detestable.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Zeena is far from stupid and no slouch in combat, but prefers to work on her nails more than anything else. Zavok has to flatter her beauty (English version) or her talents (Japanese version) just to make her to work, and Sonic has to insult her (English version) or imply he is going easy on her (Japanese version) so she fights.
  • Cowardly Boss: Zeena in her first fight. She never attacks directly and runs away when Sonic forces her out.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Zeena is the least feral looking of the Deadly Six, and is instead quite pretty to look at. She is aware of her cuteness, and is narcisistic about it.
  • Dub Personality Change: In the English version, Zeena is very vain and obsessed with makeup. In the Japanese redub, she is instead characterized as prideful and with a desire to be flattered in order to get motivated. Her cutscene with Sonic shows this difference:
    • In the English version, she gets annoyed with Sonic because last time they met, he ruined her nail art. Sonic pretends to be sorry, only to clarify he is "sorry" she has nothing better to do in life. Zeena is infuriated, but says she'll only face him once her nails dry.
    • In the Japanese version, Zeena gets annoyed with Sonic because he is ruining her reputation, proclaiming that she'll fight him seriously this time. Sonic pretends to be sorry, only to clarify he's "sorry" that he wasn't fighting her seriously either, which spurs her to angrily declare she'll give it her all now.
  • Evil Is Petty: In the English version, Zeena calls out Sonic for ruining her nails during their last fight. In the Japanese version, is her image she blames Sonic for ruining.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: The boys all have at least two horns, but Zeena only has one.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: Zeena, who is always seen painting her nails and values them (English version) or her image (Japanese version) above everything else.
  • Girly Bruiser: She's more concerned with doing her nails than she is with taking down Sonic and co. She also has some of the more challenging boss fights in both versions.
  • Green and Mean: She's villainous and has green skin and hair.
  • Green-Skinned Space Babe: It's likely no accident that The Smurfette of the gang is the one with green skin; it might even be a Shout-Out to the Trope Namer.
  • Ground Pound: Does this in her final boss encounter.
  • Gusty Glade: Both her encounters in the 3DS version involve traversing a windy arena in order to land hits on her.
  • Hair Flip: She does this at times.
  • Hartman Hips: Zeena has a bit of them, seemingly to show her feminity and vanity.
  • An Ice Person: Zeena attacks with snowmen and a giant snowman head during her fights, though whether she actually has ice powers or is just being an Improbable Weapon User is rather ambiguous.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Zeena's hair is the longest and most voluminous of the gang's—it trails down to her calves.
  • Mini Dress Of Power: Zeena's body markings make her look like she's wearing one.
  • Narcissist: Zeena would prefer to be flattered or polish her fingernails rather than work or fight Sonic. She almost seemed willing to let Sonic go went he seemingly apologized to her.
  • Pantsless Males, Fully-Dressed Females: Averted. She's the only female to not wear clothes in the games. Sally Acorn from the TV shows/Comics was also topless in some designs, but her features aren't emphasized.
  • Primp of Contempt: Zeena files/checks/paints her nails and flips her hair to show how she's more concerned with her physical appearance than anything else.
  • Puzzle Boss: Her first fight with Sonic. Zeena hides in snowmen during the fight and Sonic must destroy them all to draw her out. If he takes too long or hits a snowman with a bomb on it, the snowmen will reset, forcing him to start over.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Zeena is so narcissistic she takes Zavok's fake compliments and Sonic's Backhanded Apology at face value. This is consistent in both versions.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Zeena is the only female member of the Deadly Six.
  • Spin Attack: Zeena swings a snowman head around like an Olympic hammer in her boss fight.
  • Vanity Is Feminine: The one female member of the Deadly Six is characterized by her vanity, and being too lazy to work unless she's flattered into it.
  • Why Won't You Die?: She'll say this during her boss fight.
Zeena: You're seriously still here? Why won't you just die?! Ugh! You're like a cockroach with a horrible fashion sense!

    Zor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/slw_zor.png
Another pointless conflict is about to begin...
Voiced by: Yuuki Tai (Japanese); Sam Riegel (English)additional VAs

The apathetic member of the Deadly Six, with a love for all things somber and a moody look on life.

  • Casting a Shadow: Zor is able to do this, combining it with Self-Duplication to make shadowy copies of himself.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Zor is able to use powers so dark and forbidden that none of the others dare use them.
  • Death Seeker: He doesn't care about anything, thinks life is meaningless, and the only thing he enjoys is making others feel sadness. When he is defeated by Sonic in their final encounter and falls into lava, he's happy about the idea that he might meet his doom. As Zor falls, he says "I welcome death's cold embrace."
  • Dub Personality Change: Zor is originally written in the Western version of Lost World as a parody of emo teenagers. In the Japanese dub, he is written as melodramatic, talking like a stereotypical anime villain.
  • The Eeyore: He's constantly pessimistic.
Zor: Gotta go tell the others the bad news... giving bad news is the one thing I actually enjoy...
  • Emo Teen: Zor's got the attitude and the look to match. The "teen" part, though, is pretty much off the table.
  • Flight: Zor during his second boss battle.
  • Goth: Zor, with his gloomy expression, white skin, comb-over purple hair, and general "woe is me" personality, brings this to mind.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Zor is a depressed, nihilistic Zeti whose right eye is obscured by his hair.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: The only boy in the gang to wear his hair down is also the Sissy Villain with a flower.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: In the Japanese version, Zor states that he and Sonic are very alike.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Zor always says the word, "Sigh" rather than just sighing whenever he talks.
  • Self-Duplication: Zor can make shadowy copies of himself.
  • Something about a Rose: Zor carries a blue rose with him at (almost) all times. With the somber music, you would think he would start reciting poetry with it.
  • Straw Nihilist: Zor is this trope in spades. He's constantly depressed, never smiles, doesn't care if he wins or loses, and is apparently suicidal.
  • Youthful Freckles: Zor has a line of freckles dotted across his face, representing his being the youngest of the group.
