** Despite having its own agenda and [[OrderIsNotGood philosophy]], it doesn't really have a reason to be such a cosmic {{Sadist}} about it. For example, back when it was fighting the Ancients, instead of painlessly blowing them up again along with the Earth, it took its sweet time waging a space war that slowly rendered them extint. Four enormous robotic entities found on the Starfall islands that Sonic is unable to fight against normally, their power being just that great. Sonic has to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds to assume his Super form and fight them on even footing. It turns out that they're more than just giant robots...

In order, they are GIGANTO, WYVERN, KNIGHT, and SUPREME.

* EldritchAbomination: It is far more monstrous than any other creature ever battled by Sonic and has a bizarre set of powers, including the ability to tear through space-time itself. By the end of the game, it's still uncertain what the Time Eater even is or where it came from.

* PuzzleBoss: In "The Final Horizon" Update, it will repair and recharge SUPREME no matter how many times Super Sonic depletes its HP. Super Sonic instead has to Cyloop [[AchillesPowerCord the umbilical cable]] to break it off, then SUPREME's rifle port to make it eject the rifle, then finally the rifle itself so Eggman can use it, all before THE END sends down a fresh cable.

* PuzzleBoss: In "The Final Horizon" Update, it will repair and recharge SUPREME no matter how many times Super Sonic depletes its HP. In the first phase, Super Sonic instead has to Cyloop or repeatedly attack [[AchillesPowerCord the umbilical cable]] to break it off, then Cyloop SUPREME's rifle port to make it eject the rifle, then finally Cyloop the rifle itself so Eggman can use it, all before THE END sends down a fresh cable.cable. The second phase then has Super Sonic duke it out in a "proper" boss fight of completely depleting its health (and detaching the cable if it reattaches before that can be done).

* SuperToughness: It easily brushed off quite a bit of firepower from the Ancients, including from huge energy turrets that Tails claims are only slightly weaker than the planet-cracking Eclipse Cannon individually. It takes the combined effort of Super Sonic and the Sage-controlled Titan SUPREME (itself comparable to Super Sonic) to finally land a meaningful blow.

* WorfHadTheFlu: It was basically ''unbeatable'' despite fighting against ''four'' Titans in its prime, and needing to be sealed away inside of the Titan SUPREME instead. Each of those Titans ''individually'' were so powerful that Sonic needed to go [[SuperMode Super Sonic]] just to level the playing field, and he ''still'' had a rough time, given those Titans were still capable of killing him. If THE END hadn't been weakened from being sealed for so long, and he had to fight it alone [[EnemyMine without the aid of Sage]], Sonic very likely would have ''lost'' against it, with he fight against it in The Final Horizon only further cementing this.

Born at the beginning of time, this massive monster is the incarnation of night, darkness, and destruction. Sealed within the Earth for millions of years, Dark Gaia was woken up is awakened by Dr. Eggman as part of a scheme to dominate the world.world by harnessing its vast energy to fuel the creation of Eggmanland, though its premature unsealing causes it to fracture apart into countless smaller dark monsters that plague the shattered world at night and amplify the negative emotions of the planet's inhabitants. Sonic also ends up absorbing some of Dark Gaia's power during the process of awakening, becoming the werewolf-like "Werehog" whenever the sun goes down.

Eggman's Phantom Ruby.

Added DiffLines:

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: He is hated by just about everyone around him; even his own allies.
* AllThereInTheManual:
** His past as a mercenary and how he was employed by Dr. Eggman were only revealed in the prequel comics.
** His ultimate fate after the final battle was left ambiguous until the Encyclo-speed-ia came out, in which it was revealed that he and his prototype were "consumed by the original Phantom Ruby."
* AchillesHeel:
** [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby's illusions are powerful, but they can be countered by someone who has a Phantom Ruby as well, and being in close proximity to a Phantom Ruby weakens his own. The Avatar manages to find a Phantom Ruby prototype left behind by Infinite, allowing them to survive Infinite's illusion during their fight with him, and allowing them to ultimately foil Eggman's plan to destroy the Resistance with a virtual sun.]]
** Infinite's character bears one perhaps even more noteworthy than the rare possibility of [[spoiler:a second Phantom Ruby nullifying his powers]]: namely, [[{{Sadist}} his hopeless addiction to sadism]]. Infinite isn't interested in pragmatism; [[TheBully his personal agenda is domination]], to relish in the fear, suffering, and subjugation of others as much as possible, constantly playing it off as it "not being worth the time" to finish off the enemy. Even after Eggman calls him out on letting Sonic live when he had him cornered, ''the one person who could absolutely ruin everything'', Infinite tries to rationalize it away. [[spoiler:Even beyond that, [[CreateYourOwnHero Infinite failed to recognize what he'd inadvertently created when he subjected the Avatar to the same experience that led to]] ''[[CreateYourOwnHero him]]'' [[CreateYourOwnHero becoming so powerful]].]]
** [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby can't function without an external power supply of some sort. If all power supplies are destroyed, Infinite would no longer have access to his greatest weapon and be substantially weakened. This one isn't fully exploited, as Eggman had a backup power supply when the primary one, the Death Egg, was destroyed.]]
* AintTooProudToBeg: [[spoiler:He's reduced to pathetically pleading for his life [[YouHaveFailedMe after failing Eggman one too many times]].]]
-->'''Infinite:''' [[spoiler:No, wait! ICanStillFight]]
* AlwaysSecondBest:
** [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that he was this to Shadow. He was the captain of a mercenary squad and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary" until he was dealt a crushing defeat at the hands of the UltimateLifeForm. The humiliation drove Infinite to seek power so he'll never be weak again.]]
** His seeming mastery of his powers [[spoiler:granted by the Phantom Ruby]] makes it appear as though he's the only one who could use them. [[spoiler:However, the prequel comics reveal that Eggman was the Ruby's original wielder — however brief — and he could utilize it with far greater ease, and when he takes it back at the game's climax, he immediately demonstrates a greater level of power in projections than Infinite ever had.]]
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: He has Sonic's number in hand-to-hand combat, able to defeat him effortlessly. Of course, as the game progresses, Sonic eventually returns the favor.
* AmbiguousSituation:
** [[spoiler:The game reveals that the gem embedded into his chest is the Phantom Ruby, or rather, the finalized version of a prototype Phantom Ruby created by Eggman. What happened to the original and ''how'' Infinite is connected to said Ruby remains unknown... Unless you play Episode Shadow, wherein you learn that Infinite was the leader of the Jackal Squad Eggman hired to protect his base in Mystic Jungle, where the ''real'' Phantom Ruby was being analyzed.]]
** [[spoiler:It's also left vague on whether the Phantom Ruby's abilities are just illusions, outright reality warping, or a mix of the two. While the villains are revealed to be virtual reality constructs and the obstacles that appear during his boss fights are illusions manifested by the Ruby's power, Infinite's energy attacks and the Phantom Ruby's ability to distort gravity and create Null Space implies that there's more to the Ruby's power than what has been told.]]
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:Never outright confirmed, but strongly implied by the "Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia" to be his ultimate fate -- "consumed" by the Phantom Ruby alongside the prototype Ruby. It largely depends on whether or not he's still alive and conscious in there]].
* AnimalStereotypes: He's a black-furred jackal who started off as a thief and later grew to be a menacing villain, a common stereotype of jackals.
* ApocalypseHow: [[spoiler:He nearly pulls off a Class 6 when he tries to erase the resistance by dropping a construct of the sun onto them.]]
* ArchEnemy:
** Can be seen as one to the Avatar. [[spoiler:The Avatar's fellow soldiers were killed by Infinite, and since then, they have developed a fear of him, something Infinite uses to torment them. [[CharacterDevelopment However, some encouragement from Sonic helps the Avatar to conquer their fear of him]] and [[TookALevelInBadass help Sonic take him down for good]].]]
** [[spoiler:Infinite views Shadow as one, considering he's the reason Infinite sought to become who he is today. After Infinite accepts that Shadow [[ButForMeItWasTuesday has no reason to remember him]], but also proves in his mind that he has become more powerful than Shadow by toying with him in an illusory world, Infinite moves past this as well.]]
* ArtificialPerson: Infinite is shown to be this in the opening, as Eggman's latest and most powerful experiment, [[spoiler:though he most certainly wasn't always]].
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:Shadow was cruel to him and his team... but they'd already put their lot in with Eggman to help take over the world and get power at that point.]]
* AttackDrones: His red energy cubes serve as these for him, as his main fighting style is to send his cubes to attack opponents, arranging them in various shapes and formations.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: He's TheLeader of the Eggman Army, and by far and away its most powerful member.
* AuthoritySoundsDeep: Has a deep, commanding, echoing voice, and is clearly one of the powerhouses of Eggman's army.
* AxCrazy: [[MaskOfSanity He hides it well]], but it's pretty clear that Infinite is quite unhinged underneath it all, as he relishes in causing death and destruction. [[spoiler:In the final issue of the tie-in comic, when Infinite strikes the Phantom Ruby with his sword, he's shown what he desires most: a desolate, destroyed world, implying that he was crazy even ''before'' he gained the Ruby's power.]]
* BadassArmfold: His default pose.
* BadassNormal: [[spoiler:The final tie-in comic shows that before he gained the power of the Phantom Ruby, he was a highly skilled mercenary captain. He managed to fight his way through hundreds of Eggman's robots and came within a hairsbreadth of actually ''killing'' the good doctor, only failing due to the Phantom Ruby's interference.]]
* BattleAura: Gains one when using his powers, but how it looks depends on the version. In the [=PS4=]/XBOX One version, he glows with a red aura and is surrounded by a purple haze that occasionally flickers with red, glitching static. In the Switch version, he has a simple red outline. In the comics, his aura resembles crimson flames.
* BerserkButton: He does not like being called "weak" very much.
* BraggingThemeTune: His theme is essentially just bragging about how dangerous and awesome he is.
* BigBad: He’s the secondary villain of Sonic Forces and the main villain of Episode Shadow.
* BreakTheHaughty: [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that prior to the game, he was the captain of a mercenary team called Jackal Squad, and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary". That all changed one fateful day when he and his squad were hired by Eggman to protect one of his laboratories in Mystic Jungle, where they encountered Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow effortlessly destroyed his entire squad and handed Infinite a humiliating defeat, which would lead to Infinite's vow to become stronger and lead to him obtaining the power of the Phantom Ruby.]]
* BringIt: Makes this gesture to Sonic at the beginning of their final battle, right before growing to giant size.
* BondVillainStupidity: In his second fight with Sonic, despite still being more powerful than him, Infinite decides against killing him, deeming him [[NotWorthKilling not worth the effort]]. Eggman [[WhatWereYouThinking utterly blasts him for this]], and indeed, it comes back to haunt him later as Sonic eventually becomes strong enough to defeat him.
* BossRemix: An instrumental version of his theme song plays during the first two boss fights with him.
* TheBully: When you get right down to it, at his core, Infinite is nothing but a superpowered bully who enjoys flaunting his power and superiority over others. He constantly insults Sonic and his allies, hovers above his opponents so he can literally look down on them, and shows no respect for anyone. [[spoiler:His backstory in Episode Shadow reveals that the reason he became Infinite in the first place was that he was handed a humiliating defeat by Shadow and wanted power so he'll never be weak again, much like how real-life bullies are often motivated by a need to feel powerful.]]
* CharacterTic: His mask appears to be very loose-fitting, as he has to frequently adjust it.
* ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler:During his fight with Silver, Infinite drops one of the Phantom Ruby prototypes he was supposed to destroy. The Avatar would later find that same prototype, allowing them to survive Infinite's illusion during their fight with him, and allowing them to ultimately foil Eggman's plan to destroy the Resistance with a virtual sun.]]
* ClassicVillain: He has a distinctly evil appearance, acts as an EvilCounterpart to the Avatar, and is guilty of ''all'' of the SevenDeadlySins.
* ColdHam: Despite his calm demeanor and subdued voice, practically every line of dialog that comes out of him is an over the top BadassBoast.
* ColonyDrop: [[spoiler:Eggman and Infinite's plan to destroy the Resistance? Use the Phantom Ruby to create a virtual reality construct of the Sun and drop it on them.]]
* ColourCodedTimestop: While not exactly a time-stop, his teleportation produces the same effect as the Phantom Ruby. [[spoiler:This is not a coincidence.]]
* CoolSword: The final issue tie-in comic for ''Sonic Forces'' shows that Infinite's weapon [[spoiler:before gaining the power of the Phantom Ruby]] was a red sword curved like a scimitar.
* CreateYourOwnHero: [[spoiler:Infinite himself would inevitability create someone who would oppose him — the future Rookie of the Resistance, who would go on to be the key player in stopping Infinite once and for all.]]
* CreateYourOwnVillain: [[spoiler:He was hired by Eggman to protect the facility the Phantom Ruby was being studied in — then Shadow rolled around and mercilessly crushed him. Infinite was so taken by terror and humiliation that he more or less sold his soul for the sake of power, giving himself over to Eggman to become the Ruby's testing grounds.]]
* CunningLikeAFox: His mask is modeled after a fox's head and he has a bushy tail like a fox, [[spoiler:even though he's actually a jackal]].
* CurbStompBattle: He's an undisputed master of this.
** [[spoiler:An unmasked Infinite is on the receiving end of this to Shadow in Eggman's Facility in Mystic Jungle, which would lead to his StartOfDarkness and him becoming Infinite.]]
** In Issue Three of the ''Sonic Forces'' prequel comic, ''Looming Shadow'', Eggman dispatches Infinite to deal with Omega when he rampages through his Arsenal Pyramid as a test of his abilities. It's not a spoiler to say he won decisively.
** His first meeting with Sonic has him and the other villains dealing out a ''brutal'' one to Sonic, with Infinite in particular not even using his hands. The Blue Blur is unable to fight back at all and is soundly defeated.
** [[spoiler:A flashback shows him dealing out one to the Avatar and his team, frightening the Avatar so much [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere that they ran away in fear]].]]
** In Mystic Jungle, Silver tries to hold his own against Infinite. Key word is ''tries''. It ended as well as you'd expect, and Silver would've been killed had Sonic not stepped in.
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: All those energy attacks Infinite uses? You won't see them in his boss fights. [[spoiler:Possibly justified by his need to prove himself stronger, and thus holding back.]]
* {{Cyborg}}: The heroes believe he was built by Eggman, but in actuality he seems to be this. If nothing else, he has [[spoiler:Eggman's perfected artificial]] Phantom Ruby embedded in his chest and some sort of upgrades that increased his physical abilities.
* DarkIsEvil: He's one of the villains and his predominant colors are black and white, with hints of red here and there. When his aura is active, his entire body, sans the gem on his chest, turns black.
* DashAttack: One of his attacks during the Avatar's boss fight with him has him dashing at the player like a rocket, similarly to Sonic's Homing Attack.
* DeadpanSnarker: Has a few moments of this, surprisingly.
-->'''Infinite:''' More ants to crush. I wonder if this world can give me a real challenge.\\
''(the Avatar slowly approaches Infinite)''\\
'''Infinite:''' And as if to answer, the world sends me a trembling child.
* DealWithTheDevil: ''Issue Four: Rise of Infinite'' reveals exactly who Infinite once was: [[spoiler:he was the leader of a band of thieves before Eggman offered him and his band the chance to work for him, having been given a glimpse of Infinite's own secret desires and tempted him with the chance to see them realized. And true to the trope, Infinite finds out too late he was on the losing end when Eggman decides [[YouHaveFailedMe he's screwed up one time too many]] and shows Infinite he was just a disposable pawn the entire time.]]
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the {{Sadist}} and DarkerAndEdgier archetypes. Infinite is extremely dangerous, but his constant need to relish in the pain and suffering of others screws him and Eggman over on several occasions, such as letting Sonic live when he could have easily finished him off, or [[spoiler:killing the Avatar's squadmates, an act that would inspire the Avatar to become stronger and ultimately be the one to foil Eggman's plan to incinerate the Resistance with a virtual sun. His motives also turn out to be due to him being little more than TheBully, reveling in pain to support his own wrecked confidence after Shadow [[CurbStompBattle handily beat him]]]].
* TheDragon: Is Eggman's right-hand man in ''Forces''. The fourth comic that was released alongside the game reveals [[spoiler:that Infinite's squad was raiding Eggman's base to make quick cash. Eggman offers Infinite the chance to help take over the world]].
* DragonInChief: [[Main/SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. Eggman ''probably'' couldn't have defeated Sonic and taken over most of the world without him. [[spoiler:Though Infinite would be absolutely nothing more than a sellsword without Eggman giving him the power of the Phantom Ruby, so it really all evens out. Ultimately, in spite of Infinite's impudence towards Eggman heavily implying a betrayal, it is the doctor that ultimately dismisses him and takes the Phantom Ruby for himself after he fails too many times.]]
* TheDreaded:
** To the Resistance. Infinite defeating Sonic gave him quite a fearsome reputation, and Knuckles states that most soldiers that see him flee in terror.
** To the Avatar. [[spoiler:The Avatar's fellow soldiers were killed by Infinite, and since then, they have developed a fear of him, something Infinite uses to torment them. [[CharacterDevelopment However, some encouragement from Sonic helps the Avatar conquer their fear of him]] and [[TookALevelInBadass help Sonic take him down for good]].]]
* DrivenByEnvy: [[spoiler:Everything he is today is a desperate attempt to one-up Shadow.]]
* DrivenToMadness: [[spoiler:Overlapping a bit with GoMadFromTheRevelation, when Infinite tries to avenge his squad's destruction at Shadow's hands, Shadow delivers an absolutely '''''brutal''''' NoHoldsBarredBeatdown, mocking him as he lies broken and trembling at Shadow's feet. The sheer terror this instilled in the mercenary positively ''broke'' him, and he became obsessed with obtaining power so that he would never be driven to that point again. Though it should be noted the vision he was given by the Phantom Ruby (a wrecked, desolate world) and that he completely willingly signed up with Eggman to take over the world implies he was somewhat insane to begin with and Shadow just made him more overtly so.]]
* DrunkOnTheDarkSide: It's pretty clear he's drunk with power and ''loves'' lording it over everyone else and abusing it to no end. Though slightly unusually for this trope, he's more of a ColdHam. Unfortunately for him, he's so caught up in his own power and believed superiority that he makes serious mistakes that screw him and Eggman over on multiple occasions.
* EvilCounterpart: Infinite is a dark foil to the Avatar, making the conflict of ''Forces'' less of a battle between Sonic and Eggman and more of a match between their allies.
** Both of them had their entire squads destroyed by a powerful enemy and were belittled and mocked, leading them to vow to become stronger. However, the Avatar wants to be stronger to protect the world and his/her friends, while Infinite seeks power for his own sake.
** In a meta example, they are both nameless characters working for the main hero and villain, [[TheMainCharactersDoEverything and thanks to them]], [[TheHeavy most of the plot moves forward]]. The rookie is a custom character who wants to help save the world, while the so-called Ultimate Mercenary "gave up on his face" to help Eggman conquer the world, and took on the name of Infinite for his new identity. This likewise help differentiate Sonic and Eggman in how they treat their allies: the rookie [[CharacterDevelopment grows and becomes a hero]], while Infinite is betrayed ([[WhateverHappenedToTheMouse supposedly]]) by Eggman due to failling him too much.
* EvilGloating: '''Constantly'''. Infinite just ''loves'' to talk on and on about how invincible he is to all his opponents. And, yes, while he can back it up, this trait likewise showcases how much his power blinds him to the potential danger that leaving his opponents alive poses in the moments they ''do'' overcome his power. By the time Sonic faces him for the third and final time, he indirectly tells him YouTalkTooMuch in their banter.
* EvilerThanThou: Asserts that he sees himself as this compared to Eggman. [[spoiler:Eggman later reveals he had no intention of Infinite being his end goal and already had a replacement prepared from square one in the form of his final mecha. When Infinite fails one time too many, Eggman disposes of him and takes his place without a second thought.]]
* EvilIsPetty: His motivation for wanting to destroy the world and seek power? [[spoiler:Because Shadow destroyed his squad, defeated him [[DisproportionateRetribution and called him weak]].]] There's also a part of ForTheEvulz in that as well due to his {{sadis|t}}m.
* EvilLaugh: Will do this occasionally, such as when you die during the boss fights with him.
* EvilTastesGood: Tying in with his sadism. During his first meeting with the Avatar, he reflects that he can "taste" his fear, anxiety, and doubt, and finds it "delicious."
* EvilSoundsDeep: Has a deep, scary voice that contains a noticeable [[PowerEchoes echo effect]], though that's likely due to the [[spoiler:Phantom Ruby, as his voice before he had his mask was less intimidating, but still pretty deep]].
* EvilWearsBlack: Wears black gloves and boots and is one of the villains.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: The mask and Phantom Ruby give him a golden pupil with red sclera. When not wearing the mask, he has a blue eye and a yellow eye.
* ExtremityExtremist: In his first battle with Sonic, he manages to defeat him without even using his hands (save for using his energy blasts), literally kicking him around like a big blue ball.
* TheFaceless: He's never seen properly without his creepy mask on. [[spoiler:''Episode Shadow'' obscures his face in every angle possible, even while he's being screwed up by Shadow. However, game files reveal his face...or rather a placeholder for his face that looks incredibly static and devoid of emotion.]] Averted if the comic tie-in is considered, as it shows [[https://twitter.com/sonic_hedgehog/status/927955925721161728 his face]] in full.
* FacialHorror: He has a patch of fur over his right eye that makes it look like he has a scar.
* FailedASpotCheck: [[spoiler:He dropped one of the Ruby prototypes and didn't notice it and the Avatar dropping that same Ruby later and Infinite not even seeing it right in the Avatar's hand.]]
* FatalFlaw:
** {{Pride}}. Infinite is undeniably powerful and dangerous, but he's so caught up in his own power and superiority that he never considers the possibility that he ''can lose''. This pride causes him to make some careless errors, such as [[BondVillainStupidity letting Sonic live]] [[WhyDontYouJustShootHim when he could've easily finished him off]]. This is partly what makes his boss fights so satisfying, as you get to show Infinite the hard way that he's [[NotSoInvincibleAfterAll not as invincible as he thinks.]]
** His InferioritySuperiorityComplex also lends itself to this; [[spoiler:his [[{{Sadist}} sadism]] is largely about proving to himself he's stronger than anyone else, and as noted, his desire to draw out the pain backfires on him more than once.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: Infinite speaks in a calm, eloquent manner. However, it's blatantly obvious that his politeness is merely a smug facade… a facade that quickly [[MaskOfSanity cracks]] when things don't go his way.
* FeetOfClay: Infinite presents himself as an extremely deadly, nigh unbeatable monster no one stands a chance against...[[spoiler:but he's actually a psychopathic bully who's power is ''literally'' all illusions. On top of this, he proves to be ''extremely'' incompetent, due to putting his [[{{Sadist}} sadism]] over actually being effective.]]
* FlashStep: He's quick enough to perform these.
* {{Flight}}: He's capable of flying. [[spoiler:Mostly because of the Phantom Ruby.]]
* FlunkyBoss: After damaging him enough during the Avatar's boss fight with him, Infinite will summon Eggman's robots to assist him.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Infinite wasn't born with his powers, back then he was just [[spoiler:a jackal. Episode Shadow reveals that he was once a mercenary who joined Eggman after taking his offer to help take over the world and was assigned to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at Shadow's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.]]
* FriendlessBackground: Infinite keeps reiterating that friendships are just illusions and keeps ignoring friendship speeches about how friendships are important. This implies that he never had any friends.
* GeneralFailure: Infinite is Eggman's [[TheDragon main enforcer]] and genuinely dangerous, [[spoiler:but he's also an AxeCrazy {{Sadist}} more fixated on relishing in his enemies' pain than actually doing his job effectively or pragmatically. Eggman's ultimate defeat in the game is ''entirely'' on Infinite for playing with his food too much.]]
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: [[spoiler:Upon realizing that Shadow has made him feel legitimate fear for the first time, Infinite completely breaks down and eventually allows himself to be Eggman's new guinea pig in exchange for power.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: [[spoiler:His descent into madness was caused by his desire to exceed Shadow's level of power. After doing so, he shifts his focus to trying to one-up Sonic himself.]]
* HateSink: Overall, Infinite is a PsychopathicManchild with a constant {{Sadist}} streak, he may appear to be a badass, but by the end, it's clear that he's nothing but [[TheBully a bully]].
* HandBlast: He is able to fire [[EnergyWeapon laser beams]] and {{Energy Ball}}s from his hands.
* TheHeavy: He takes leadership of Eggman's army in ''Sonic Forces''.
* HeroKiller: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] in that the only people he actually kills are [[spoiler:the Avatar's teammates]], but he effortlessly defeats other powerful characters such as Sonic, Silver, and Omega.
* HiredGuns: He was a mercenary before [[spoiler:[[BerserkButton Shadow]] [[CurbStompBattle inspired]] [[FaceHeelTurn him]] to become more powerful.]]
* HopeCrusher: Infinite thrives on driving his opponents to despair with his immense power. As he tells Silver:
-->'''Infinite:''' This wasn't part of my agenda, but I'm always happy to crush a hero. It keeps the rabble in line. Shows them that there is no hope.
* HumanoidAbomination: He appears to be the same kind of FunnyAnimal species as the main cast, but his design incorporates traits from different animal species, he possesses powers beyond anything seen so far, and Tails is unable to make sense of the readings he gives out on the Miles Electric. [[spoiler:He's really a FunnyAnimal (a jackal, specifically) like everyone else, but powered up by the Phantom Ruby.]]
* ICanStillFight: [[spoiler:His final words before he disappears.]]
* ImageSong: Aptly titled "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKjOJuPjiu4 Infinite]]".
* ImaginationBasedSuperpower: The Phantom Ruby allows him to conjure up anything he feels like to attack Sonic and the others with, ranging from lasers to cannons to [[spoiler:an outright ColonyDrop using a localized burning star that fills the sky]], the requirement being that they have to come in contact with the Phantom Ruby's red cubes or be in close enough physical proximity to Infinite. [[spoiler:They're actually just illusions, but they will still be injured or killed as if the illusions were real.]]
* ImmuneToFlinching: PlayedWith during his boss fights. If struck by Sonic's Homing Attack or the Avatar's Wire Attack, he'll recoil from the impact. But if struck by the Avatar's Wispon attacks, he won't react outside of grunts of pain.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Heavily implied to have one. [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that prior to the game, he was the captain of a mercenary team and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary". That all changed one fateful day when he and his squad were hired by Eggman to protect one of his laboratories in Mystic Jungle, where they encountered Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow effortlessly destroyed his entire squad and handed Infinite a humiliating defeat, which would lead to Infinite's vow to become stronger and led to him obtaining the power of the Phantom Ruby.]] This is why he constantly boasts about his power: to make himself feel strong. This is also why he objects to Eggman's strategy to retreat after [[spoiler:the Death Egg is destroyed]]. To him, retreat is a sign of weakness.
* {{Infinite}}: It's his name. ''Duh''. Fittingly enough, Hoobastank sings the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI97jY3FZ9Q main theme]] of ''Sonic Forces'', and their name is often stylized as h∞bastank, also containing an Infinite symbol. He also has the infinity symbol decorated on the soles of his boots.
* InformedSpecies: [[spoiler:He's a jackal, despite looking ''very'' little like one.]]
* InterfaceScrew: Throughout the Capital City stage, Infinite will occasionally pop in and use the [[spoiler:Phantom Ruby]] to [[GravityScrew screw with the gravity]].
* IWorkAlone: Espouses this sentiment during the final battle with him. [[spoiler:Having his entire squadron wiped out by Shadow likely inspired a desire to never again rely on others.]]
-->'''Infinite:''' Friends are nothing but a fleeting illusion. You can count on nobody but yourself.
* {{Jerkass}}: [[ExaggeratedTrope Exaggerated]]. Infinite spends nearly every second of his screentime behaving like a smug, sadistic bully that earns the ire of everyone from the Resistance, to the player, to even Eggman himself.
* JustToyingWithThem: Infinite rarely actually fights seriously and enjoys toying with his enemies for his own amusement. [[spoiler:This is a FatalFlaw, as playing with his food rather than being pragmatic ultimately royally screws him and Eggman over.]]
* KickTheDog: Does this near-constantly, but the shining example happens early on, when he massacres all of the Avatar's friends and spares the poor kid solely to mock them for being afraid.
* KnightOfCerebus:
** While ''Sonic Forces'' is one of the darker ''Sonic'' games to date, it still has some lighthearted scenes at times. Any scene involving Infinite, however, is utterly devoid of humor or levity. Notably, he is one of the few ''Sonic'' villains to be explicitly seen killing people onscreen.
** This is best shown in Stage 16, Capital City. Knuckles, learning that Eggman's army is undermanned in his home base in Metropolis, decides to order a full-scale assault on the city. Things quickly go to hell when Infinite arrives and, at the doctor's command, [[spoiler:activates the Phantom Ruby's power to create giant, grotesque illusions of himself, throwing the Resistance into chaos]]. By the time the stage ends, 80% of the Resistance is utterly annihilated.
* LackOfEmpathy: Infinite only cares for causing as much destruction and suffering as he can. He considers friendship to be a waste.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: He remarks to Eggman that Sonic has beaten him "for decades."
* LiteralMinded: [[spoiler:After Shadow [[CurbStompBattle wrecked his shit]] two months before the start of the game and told him to never "show your pathetic face around me ever again", Infinite took that to mean he should start wearing a mask.]]
* LivingShadow: He resembles one quite well, especially when his BattleAura is activated, and bears some similarities to [[http://38.media.tumblr.com/e16e8c9de4026ccc9804d1df97b8008b/tumblr_n8thieEJ0J1ta883ho2_r1_500.png Blaze's concept art]].
* LovesTheSoundOfScreaming: After decimating the Avatar's squad, he deliberately allowed them to run away and live for this reason.
-->'''Infinite''': Give in to your fear. Flee, screaming, and I'll let you live.
* MadnessMantra: ''[[spoiler:I AM NOT WEAK!]]''
* MalevolentMaskedMan: Wears a metallic mask shaped like a fox's head and is one of the main villains of the game.
* MaskOfPower: Whenever he gets ready to attack, the [[GlowingEyesOfDoom right eye on his mask glows red.]]
* MaskOfSanity: Despite what his composed, [[FauxAffablyEvil eerily polite]] demeanor may imply, Infinite is nothing more than a petty {{Sadist}} who revels in the carnage he inflicts and melts down whenever things don't go his way.
* MasterOfIllusion: [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby's true power. It doesn't actually warp reality, but it [[MindRape mind-rapes]] anyone within range with illusions and hallucinations that seem so real that [[YourMindMakesItReal whatever happens in said hallucinations happens for real]]. In his boss fights, this is done through his energy cubes. Contact with them sends the player into a glitching illusion where they are attacked by objects manifested by the Ruby's power.]]
* MineralMacGuffin: [[spoiler:He has some relation to the mysterious purple gemstone that is referred to as the "Phantom Ruby" by an [[AllThereInTheManual in-game guide]] that everyone was after in ''VideoGame/SonicMania'', implied by the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3BkwugNsS0 sound]] it makes. The game reveals that the Ruby was given to him by Eggman.]]
* MirrorCharacter: Presumably the reason he loves tormenting the Avatar: [[spoiler:He lost his squad and was called weak by a much more powerful opponent. It reminded Infinite of himself that day when he takes out the Avatar's squad and calls them "weak". Except now Infinite's the big dog who [[PitifulWorms belittles]] his opponents, much like Shadow.]]
* MoreDespicableMinion: Despite being taken a bit more seriously than usual in ''Forces'', Dr. Eggman remains somewhat [[LaughablyEvil comical and buffoonish]], and overall prioritizes PragmaticVillainy over wanton destruction. Infinite, by contrast, is just a sadistic warlord who is taken dead seriously and prioritizes indulging in petty cruelty over actually following Eggman's orders. [[spoiler:Eventually, [[EvenEvilHasStandards even Eggman]] gets fed up with his excessive bloodlust and [[StupidEvil poor decisions]].]]
* MysteriousPast: Little is known about Infinite's backstory in the main game. While the prequel DLC and comics do shed some light on how he ended up working for Eggman, everything prior to that remains a complete enigma that will likely never be uncovered.
* MysteriousStranger: Infinite is presented as this, during the main story anyway. Sonic never discovers Infinite's backstory during the game. Only Shadow knows what he was before becoming what he is now.
--> '''Sonic''': I don't know anything about you. Not even your name.
* {{Narcissist}}: Infinite goes around flaunting his power and declaring himself superior to anyone who crosses him, and gets ''violently'' upset anyone bruises his ego. As ''Episode Shadow'' reveals, [[spoiler:his entire reason for adopting his new persona was due to being defeated and humiliated by Shadow, and his fragile ego couldn't handle being considered "weak" by anyone]].
* NeverBeHurtAgain: A completely [[HateSink unsympathetic]] example. [[spoiler:After being beaten to a pulp and humiliated by Shadow, Infinite decides to subject himself to Eggman's experiments in order to become so powerful that nobody will ever be able to make him feel afraid or weak again. After obtaining the Phantom Ruby, he goes on to [[TheBully gleefully inflict those exact same feelings onto others]].]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler:Tormenting the Avatar, dropping the prototype Phantom Ruby and leaving Sonic alive screws him and Eggman over in the long run.]]
* NoNameGiven: Even before taking the moniker "Infinite", we only know his nickname "The Ultimate Mercenary". His actual name is never revealed. WordOfGod would later clear this up and reveal his name [[HisNameReallyIsBarkeep actually]] ''[[HisNameReallyIsBarkeep is]]'' [[HisNameReallyIsBarkeep Infinite]].
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Used intentionally to give Infinite an otherworldly, alien feel to him. While designed in the same CartoonCreature style as other characters, his design incorporates both foxlike traits as well as the hairstyle used by both hedgehogs and echindas. He also has a red outline around him and is constantly emanating a purple aura that occasionally flickers with red static, as if he's out of sync with the ''Sonic'' universe.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: When confronting the Avatar in Metropolis, he teleports right next to the Avatar, his mask mere inches away from his face, taunting him on whether he'll fight or run away again.
* NotWorthKilling: His initial reaction to Sonic after their second fight, [[VideoGame/SonicAndTheBlackKnight similar to King Arthur]].
-->'''Infinite:''' As I predicted. You're not even worth the effort to finish off.
* ObviouslyEvil: Let's see: [[EvilWearsBlack Has black fur and clothing?]] Check. [[MalevolentMaskedMan Wears a metallic mask shaped like a fox's head that hides his face]] save for an eye that has a [[SupernaturalGoldEyes gold iris]] and [[RedEyesTakeWarning red sclera?]] Check. [[PowerGlows Glows with a red outline and emanates a purple haze]] with [[OminousVisualGlitch red glitching static?]] Check. [[TheDragon Is the right-hand man to the main antagonist of the series?]] Check. [[VoiceOfTheLegion Has a demonic, echoing voice?]] Check. [[AxCrazy Openly relishes death and destruction?]] Check. Yep, definitely a bad guy.
* OminousVisualGlitch: His aura occasionally has a glitch-like effect in some spots. The official ''Sonic'' Youtube channel's upload of his theme also has the image glitching out. [[spoiler:His virtual reality constructs have the same glitching effect]]. Just before the final level of the game, [[spoiler:Eggman is able to make him vanish like his constructs by recalling the Phantom Ruby, implying that part or all of his physical form had become a phantom construct.]]
* OmnicidalManiac:
** Infinite and Eggman's plan in ''Sonic Forces'' is to destroy the world and rebuild it from the ashes in their image.
--->'''Infinite:''' We move forward with the plan?\\
'''Eggman:''' Of course! When it's complete, the Resistance will be erased. The world will be nothing but ashes, from which a glorious Eggman Empire will rise!\\
'''Infinite:''' And the Resistance will yield to the [[spoiler:Phantom Ruby's]] power. All will submit.
** [[spoiler:The vision he got from the Phantom Ruby in the prequel comic implies he may have had ambitions of being one of these ''before'' he became what he is now.]]
* ParodySue: Has many traits of one of the "Villain Sue" variety. He's portrayed as faster than Sonic, able to curbstomp some of the strongest heroes in the series, forms a LegionOfDoom of some of its strongest villains subservient to him, and spends every other sentence bragging about how powerful he is... [[spoiler:because his one true, definitive power is the ability to make YourMindMakesItReal illusions that make himself appear all-powerful. In actuality, he's nothing more than a {{sadist}}ic [[TheBully bully]] with more power than he has any right to, and once ways around his power are found, he's not nearly as invincible and perfect as he thinks he is.]]
* PitifulWorms: Constantly insults and belittles Sonic and the Resistance, referring to them with such terms as "rabble" and "ants" and "pests". In the Japanese version, he's quite fond of calling them "trash".
* PowerCrystal: [[spoiler:The source of Infinite's power is the gem on his chest, a finalized version of the Phantom Ruby prototypes created by Eggman.]]
* PowerIncontinence: Implied. [[spoiler:After being defeated by Sonic and the Avatar, Infinite's body begins to glitch and warp like his virtual reality constructs, implying that they did so much damage to Infinite that his body couldn't contain or control the Phantom Ruby anymore.]]
* PowerOfTheVoid: He can attack with HardLight cubes of PureEnergy. [[spoiler:A more straightforward example is the Phantom Ruby's ability to create Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists. He uses this in an attempt to kill Sonic, but Sonic manages to escape with help from the Avatar.]]
* PowersDoTheFighting: [[GameplayAndStorySegregation Gameplay-wise, anyway.]] In cutscenes, he's a dynamic, hands-on fighter who pelts opponents with energy attacks. In his boss fights, he mainly floats around and attacks with his cubes, [[ShapingYourAttacks arranging them in various shapes]]. [[spoiler:Of course, given the [[MasterOfIllusion nature of his powers]], it's not entirely clear how much of what Infinite does is actually him and how much is an illusion created by the Phantom Ruby.]]
* PsychoForHire: He's a {{Sadist}} who ''really'' enjoys his work as Eggman's [[TheDragon Dragon]]. [[spoiler:He also really enjoyed being a mercenary and willingly joined Eggman. Deconstructed to a degree, as his sadism is a FatalFlaw that ultimately bites him and Eggman in the end and causes him to make mistakes that even Eggman realizes were blunders.]]
* PsychopathicManchild: Pretty much the definition of the trope. [[spoiler:His whole motivation basically boils down to him throwing a massive tantrum over being humiliated by Shadow.]]
* PunchClockVillain: [[spoiler:He was originally just another hired goon in Eggman's employ. Then Shadow wrecked his shit, driving him over the edge and turning him into what he is today.]]
* ReadingsAreOffTheScale: While no numbers are given, Tails states that the readings he's getting off of Infinite don't make sense. [[spoiler:Given the true nature of his powers, this was likely because what it was picking up and what Tails and Sonic saw happening didn't match up.]]
* RealityWarper: [[spoiler:Of a sort. Infinite can't control ''conventional'' reality per sé, but he possesses absolute control of reality for anything caught in the Phantom Ruby's field of effect, [[MasterOfIllusion casting a world of illusion]] [[YourMindMakesItReal that becomes tangible reality for all afflicted]]. This can have varied results ranging anywhere from confusing the senses, losing sense of time, altering the terrain, or ''dropping a star from the sky''.]]
* RecurringBoss: You fight Infinite [[RuleOfThree three times]] throughout the game. The first fight is with Sonic, the second fight is with the Avatar, and the final battle is with [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs Sonic and the Avatar together]].
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: He's colored black and red, and radiating reddish energy, and he is ''certainly'' not to be trifled with.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Subverted. He appears to have red sclera, but Episode Shadow reveals that it's just the red-tinted glass of the mask. His sclera is actually white.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Eggman's red. Best shown in their reaction to [[spoiler:Sonic and the Avatar escaping the Phantom Ruby's Null Space]]. While Eggman is naturally having a FreakOut, Infinite merely responds with an unamused scoff. Ironically, [[spoiler:Eggman is more of a CrazyPrepared NoNonsenseNemesis (Blue), while Infinite is a StupidEvil {{Sadist}} (Red)]].
* RestrainingBolt: [[spoiler:Exactly how it works isn't made clear, but when Infinite fails one time too many, Eggman proves capable of effortlessly recalling him and reclaiming the Phantom Ruby and Infinite is powerless to do anything about it.]]
* {{Sadist}}: ''Hoo boy''. Infinite absolutely relishes in causing terror and pain in others and he is not afraid to let it be known. A throwaway line in his theme song outright says that Infinite is at his best when people are at their lowest. [[spoiler:Deconstructed, as his rampant sadism costs him and Eggman in the end.]]
-->'''Infinite:''' (''To the Avatar'') Fine, I will teach you fear, then pain, and then... Well, at least the fear and pain will end.\\
'''Infinite:''' (''To the Avatar'') I can taste your terror, child. All that anxiety and doubt... it's delicious. (''Fires an energy blast in front of the Avatar, [[{{Troll}} intentionally missing just to startle them]]'') Give in to your fear. Flee, screaming, and I'll let you live. (''EvilLaugh'')
* SanityHasAdvantages: While Infinite ''is'' extremely dangerous, he's also clearly an insane {{sadist}}. This screws over him and Eggman on several occasions, as he prioritizes his sadism over pragmatism.
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:In issue four of the prequel comic, Infinite was a ruthless mercenary, but a relatively stable guy (though his Phantom Ruby-induced vision of a desolate world implied there was some element of insanity). However, the death of his squad and his own humiliating defeat at Shadow's hand brought all of that madness to the surface.]]
* SevenDeadlySins: Fitting his role as a ClassicVillain and HateSink, Infinite embodies all the cardinal sins throughout the game:
** Lust: Infinite takes pleasure in spreading chaos and destruction wherever he goes, and was shown in the game's prequel comic to [[spoiler:have already dreamed of a world in ruin before he even joined Dr. Eggman.]]
** Gluttony: Infinite has a constant and insatiable desire to [[{{Sadist}} relish in the terror and suffering of others]] to the point that it prevents him from acting pragmatically, which possibly also influenced his decision to [[NiceJobFixingItVillain spare Sonic and the Avatar]] in the times they showed that they didn't fear him as much as he'd wanted them to.
** Greed: Infinite also has a desire for raw power and domination, both to sate his desires of making others suffer and for the glory of becoming the most powerful warrior who ever lived.
** Sloth: Infinite completely relies on the power of the [[MineralMacGuffin Phantom Ruby replica]] that Eggman made for him. Even then, he isn't even that ''good'' at using it on his own [[spoiler:despite it giving him an ImaginationBasedSuperpower]]-- his fighting style throughout the game typically involves using raw energy to create laser blasts or simple energy constructs that attack his opponents for him, and the only physical ability he ever thinks to utilize is a DashAttack.
** Wrath: Infinite ruthlessly hurts and kills others for the sake of showing his dominance over them, and as stated above, desires rampant chaos and suffering more than anything else. He's also incredibly petty on top of it, and tries to psychologically torment his enemies any chance he can.
** Envy: Infinite is driven by a [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex crippling inferiority complex]], and his entire motivation for becoming Eggman's champion, as revealed in [[DownloadableContent Episode Shadow]], is that [[spoiler:Shadow [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomped]] him after beating his flunkies and told him not to "show [his] pathetic face" around him ever again. Hence, Infinite donned a mask and the power of the Phantom Ruby purely out of a desire to be a bigger deal than Shadow, and the ColdHam persona he picked up afterwards could possibly even be imitating Shadow's own [[TheStoic stoic demeanor]] and tendency to [[SmugSuper belittle his opponents]].]]
** Pride: Infinite appropriately has this as his true FatalFlaw, with all the other sins discussed here meant to affirm it. Infinite believes himself to be the most powerful being who ever lived, constantly looks down upon his enemies and [[EvilGloating brags about how powerful he is]], and is so rife with overconfidence to the point of believing he's invincible, which leads to him screwing over Eggman's plans on multiple occasions, to the point that [[spoiler:Eggman pulls a YouHaveFailedMe when Sonic and the Avatar beat him for the final time.]]
* SkywardScream: [[spoiler:In his breakdown.]]
* SmallNameBigEgo: Even before taking up the mask and becoming ''reborn'', he considered himself to be the "ultimate mercenary" before Shadow [[CurbStompBattle took him down in one battle]]. [[spoiler:Even after his upgrade, Infinite isn't as big of a fish as he ''thinks'' he is, as he was little more than a pawn for Eggman that the good doctor disposes of the moment he's screwed up one time too many.]]
* SmugSuper: Infinite has a bigger ego than Sonic and Shadow combined, ''and'' has all the power to justify it [[spoiler:now. He was a relatively weak MilesGloriosus originally]].
* TheSocialDarwinist: Espouses this sentiment during his fight with the Avatar. As revealed in Episode Shadow, [[spoiler:this sentiment is likely the result of his effortless defeat at Shadow's hands. He never again wanted to be as weak as he was that day, and that conviction and self-loathing seems to have inspired a hatred for those who are weak.]]
-->'''Infinite:''' (''To the Avatar'') You must be a straggler who got left behind. The strong will always vanquish the weak. You have only your own frailty to blame.
* TheSociopath: Infinite is utterly [[LackOfEmpathy devoid of empathy]], [[{{Sadist}} takes pleasure in inflicting pain on others]], and almost always speaks in a [[FauxAffablyEvil polite]], yet condescending manner. However, he also lacks foresight, making him prone to screwing up his own plans due to poor impulse control and excessive need to be stimulated.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Rarely raises his voice above a cold, CreepyMonotone, even when committing acts of mass slaughter.
* SoreLoser: Infinite is motivated by his maniacal desire for a desolated world where he remains at the top, but his firsts actions once reborn is to trap [[spoiler:Shadow in a world of illusions purely because Shadow defeated him and destroyed his squad.]]
--> '''Infinite, pretending to be Omega''': "Affirmative! [[BlatantLies I have never known d-d-d-defeat!]] I am not defeated. [[MadnessMantra I am not weak, I am not weak, I AM NOT WEAK, I AM NOT WEAK... I AM NOT WEAK...!!!]]"
* SpaceMaster: [[spoiler:While the Phantom Ruby's powers are mostly centered around illusions and virtual reality, it does give Infinite some degree of spatial manipulation, mostly centered on [[GravityMaster controlling gravity]]. In Central City, Infinite uses the Phantom Ruby to screw with the gravity and he's also capable of creating Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists.]]
* TheStarscream: Subverted. While Infinite [[TeethClenchedTeamwork does disagree with Eggman at times]], he remains loyal (or at least subservient) to him to the end. However, [[spoiler:given that Eggman had full control of the Phantom Ruby and could recall it at any time, it's likely that Infinite wouldn't have had a say in the matter.]]
* StartOfDarkness:
** [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that he was once an ordinary jackal and a mercenary hired by Eggman to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at the dark hedgehog's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.]]
** The fourth and final tie-in comic shows it started a little sooner when [[spoiler:despite failing to steal anything from Eggman, Eggman offers Infinite and the Jackal Squad the chance to become stronger and take over the world. Infinite is more than happy to [[EnemyMine oblige]]]].
* TheStoic: To the point of DissonantSerenity. Infinite is never seen to be anything other than unnervingly calm, barely raising his voice outside of the occasional EvilLaugh and two ThisCannotBe moments. It helps that the mask hides his facial expressions. Episode Shadow shows that he was more emotive prior to the game.
* StoryBreakerPower: [[spoiler:Infinite is able to create "[[EvilKnockoff virtual reality constructs]]" that have the personalities and powers of the characters they are based on, so it's possible for him to create an army of giant [[UltimateLifeForm Shadows]], [[PhysicalGod Chaoses and distorted versions of Perfect Chaos]], Zavoks, and [[EvilKnockoff Metal Sonics]].]]
* StupidEvil: His primary flaw is that he prioritizes indulging his own sadism over the mission, with disastrous results for both himself and Dr. Eggman.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Well, only one eye, but his eye has a gold iris with red sclera.
* SuperpowerLottery: [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby's illusion powers are incredibly versatile and dangerous. With the Phantom Ruby Prototype, Infinite can create [[MasterOfIllusion intricate illusions that are so realistic]] that [[YourMindMakesItReal anything that happens to the victim in the illusion affects them for real]]. Infinite can also use this power to create virtual reality constructs of ''any'' character, complete with the memories, powers, and personalities of the original, ''and'' he can alter them to make them stronger and more dangerous, such making Metal Sonic bigger and granting him electrified versions of his energy cubes. Infinite can also use the Phantom Ruby to [[PowerOfTheVoid create Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists, much like a real-life black hole]]. Apart from that, Infinite [[FlyingBrick has flight, super speed, super strength, energy blasts, and incredible durability]].]]
* SuperSoldier: [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that he's basically one for Eggman. Infinite was already a highly skilled mercenary, but the "super" part didn't come in until he gained the power of the Phantom Ruby.]]
* SuperSpeed: He's quick enough to FlashStep. It’s implied that it's not just actual speed, as he can seemingly teleport. [[spoiler:Infinite's ''real'' power and the strange readings imply he can't even do that and is more using the Phantom Ruby to ''appear'' capable of it. In practice, Sonic is capable of keeping pace with him once the Phantom Ruby's power isn't at play.]]
--> '''Tails:''' Whoa. This guy is faster than Sonic!
* ThisCannotBe: His normally unshakable demeanor has faltered on two occasions, the first being [[spoiler:when the Avatar manages to survive Infinite's illusion during his fight with them]], and the second being [[spoiler:when he's defeated for the final time]].
* TooImportantToWalk: Highlighting his SmugSuper nature, Infinite is never seen walking and prefers to just fly around as a demonstration of his power.
* TrashTalk: In the Japanese version, he frequently dismisses all his enemies as "trash".
* UncertainDoom: [[spoiler:While it is implied that his body started fading away after it was too damaged to handle the Phantom Ruby's power anymore, and made clear ([[LostInTranslation in the Japanese version especially]]) that Eggman himself recalled him [[YouHaveFailedMe once he lost too many times]], it's not made explicit as to whether he actually died following his last fight with Sonic and the Avatar, only that Eggman likely placed his Phantom Ruby into his Death Egg Robot. The Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia proposes that he and his prototype Phantom Ruby ended up getting absorbed into the original Phantom Ruby, though that doesn't clarify if he's gone for good, especially since the Ruby is still intact.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery:
** Throughout the game, Infinite never considers Sonic and the Resistance to be a credible threat, passing up an opportunity to kill Sonic because he felt he was NotWorthKilling. Eggman even blasts Infinite for that, [[ProperlyParanoid knowing that as long as Sonic was alive, he'd continue to be a thorn in their side]]. This would end up being a costly mistake, as Sonic eventually becomes strong enough to defeat him.
--->'''Eggman:''' You let the hedgehog ''live?!'' That is a ''great'' source of concern!\\
'''Infinite:''' For you, perhaps. [[TemptingFate He's beaten you for decades, but I defeated him in our first encounter.]]
** [[spoiler:This caused his StartOfDarkness to begin with; despite claiming to be the "Ultimate Mercenary", he hadn't counted on being beaten by [[UltimateLifeForm Shadow]].]]
** [[spoiler:He also shows to be dismissive to Eggman and outright brags about defeating Sonic when Eggman couldn't. Cue Eggman effortlessly pulling a YouHaveFailedMe on Infinite after one failure too many on the jackal's part.]]
* UnskilledButStrong: [[spoiler:Implied. While Infinite has some skill in hand-to-hand combat thanks to his mercenary background and can steamroll through a good chunk of the cast, he is entirely reliant on the Phantom Ruby in combat. His boss fights mainly consist of him letting his energy cubes do all the work, with his only physical attack being an easily avoidable DashAttack. In cutscenes, his fighting style basically boils down to "throw energy blasts at opponents until they die". He's shown to have trouble when its powers are weakened or neutralized. In addition, Eggman shows himself to be far more proficient in the Phantom Ruby's use.]]
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Infinite thinks he's a lot higher on the totem pole than he ''actually'' is and the more important one in him and Eggman's relationship. In reality, Infinite is little more than a disposable pawn that Eggman already has a replacement ready for and can get rid of with casual ease when he feels like it. Infinite doesn't realize Eggman has played him like a fiddle the entire time until Eggman decides YouHaveFailedMe after one screw up too many.]]
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: Infinite skirts the line about as razor-thin as you can get. His constant death threats and assurances that he will make things slow and painful for any opposition still avoid bumping the rating above "E-10+" (so no worse than the highest-rated games in the franchise like ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'', ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', or ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'') and don't necessarily remove the usual ''Sonic'' feel from the scenes he's not in, but he definitely changes the tone of the game in comparison to the rest of the franchise.
* VillainBall: After defeating Sonic in the Mystic Jungle, he lets him live, deeming him NotWorthKilling. Eggman calls him out on doing so, knowing that Sonic will continue to be a threat as long as he's still alive, and is ultimately proven right.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:He has a huge one after Shadow humiliated him, going into a insane freak-out which pushes him into becoming Eggman's weapon. He also has another (albeit brief) one when he starts to disappear after being defeated for the last time.]]
-->'''Infinite:''' [[spoiler:''[notices his hand shaking]'' I... I'm shaking... Me!? Me... Afraid...!? Urgh. Pathetic!? Me... he's calling ''ME'' weak!? No! I am not weak! I'm... I'm not. I'm not weak! I AM NOT WEEEEAAAAAAK! URRRAAAAAAAAAAAGHH!]]
* VillainSong: Has one that can be heard [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKjOJuPjiu4&t=0s here]], which goes out of its way to describe just how dangerous and powerful he is and how he'll destroy anything in his way.
* VisualPun: Infinite's habit of hovering above the heroes means that he's ''literally'' "looking down on them".
* VoiceOfTheLegion: His voice sounds truly demonic.
* WasOnceAMan: He used to be a [[FunnyAnimal regular guy]] like Sonic and his friends before aligning himself with Eggman. [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that he was once an ordinary jackal and a mercenary hired by Eggman to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at the dark hedgehog's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.]]
* WeCanRuleTogether: [[spoiler:Eggman offers this to Infinite after a fight with him, and Infinite accepted the offer.]]
* WeHaveBecomeComplacent: The only reason he was able to beat Sonic the first time was because he had four of his replicas backing him up. That victory only made Infinite too overconfident in his abilities, which leads to his sadism making critical mistakes for Eggman.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler:After his final defeat in ''Sonic Forces'', he fades away into a light and flies into a tower, after which Tails tracks his Phantom Ruby leading to Eggman's final mecha with Infinite nowhere to be seen. It was later revealed in the [[AllThereInTheManual Encyclo-speed-ia]] that he and his prototype were "consumed" by the ''original'' Phantom Ruby.]]
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He has ghostly white hair and he's one of the bad guys.
* WhosLaughingNow: [[spoiler:His main ambition for utilizing the Phantom Ruby. Rather expectedly, Shadow, the one who started his embitterment, is the first person he personally toys with before starting about capturing Sonic.]]
* TheWorfEffect: His first meeting with Sonic ends with the hero utterly trounced.
* WorthyOpponent: Averted. He treats everyone he fights with utter contempt, but his interactions with Omega, Shadow and Sonic imply that he sees them as the ones to defeat in order to prove he's the strongest. Once he defeats Sonic though, he doesn't bother taking him seriously afterwards.
* YouHaveFailedMe: [[spoiler:All but said. After the virtual sun plan fails thanks to Infinite's screw-up and he's defeated by Sonic and the Avatar, he's teleported away against his will. Tails then tracks his Phantom Ruby underground… leading directly to Eggman's final mecha powered by it, with no sign of Infinite.]]
* YourMindMakesItReal: [[spoiler:Revealed to be the actual power of the Phantom Ruby: it creates illusions that nonetheless feel real to the victim's brain, causing injuries taken in the illusion to occur to the victim in reality.]]

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicFrontiers''

* EnergyBall: [[spoiler:THE END-possessed SUPREME in the ''Final Horizon'' update finale will fire balls of cyber corruption from its multiple arms that permanently decrease Sonic's ring count with each successful hit. If Sonic is hit by one during the second phase of the fight, a cutscene initiates where THE END creates a ''massive'' sphere of cyber corruption and hurls it at Sonic, knocking him out of Super Sonic 2 state and taking away so many rings that, no matter how many he had beforehand, when he reassumes Super Sonic 2 he only has 100 rings left. * TopGod: Confirned at best and Zig-zagged at worst. On the one hand, it claims to be beyond any machine or god Sonic has fought before, with Sage noting even Super Sonic can't stop it completely--and in the DLC, it's powerful enough to de-power a boosted Super Sonic, needing Cyber Super Sonic to beat it in a far more timely manner than the base game. However, on the other hand, [[OverlyNarrowSuperlative it DOES limit this boast to only gods Sonic himself knowingly fought]]. *But*, one the OTHER other hand, while that may ''SEEM'' to exclude Solaris due to the time reboot at the end of his game, Sonic ''HAS'' been hinted and alluded to have retained his memories of Sonic 06 and thus Solaris by extension (albeit in Japanese scripts). Even then, though, remembering or not, THE END has achieved things that Solaris has not despite the latter's supposed superiority. Hence the "Zig-zagged at worst" above. Officially speaking however, as far as approved material goes until word from the likes of Iizuka or Kishimoto say otherwise, THE END is a tenuously confirmed case for now.
