"Who would want to buy a good car when you can buy an American car?"
Bob Packwood

There's nothing like the classics.

As one of the largest and best-selling brands of America, Chevrolet has a history of its own, being one of the daily driven cars for characters, mostly ones depicted in American movies, cartoons or TV shows. Whether if its a heavy-duty pickup like the Silverado or C/K pickup driven by the rural inhabitants who love a thrilling adventure or a timeless beauty like the Camaro or Corvette for the slick and stylish, Chevrolet is the car the best represents the heartbeat of America. Loud, powerful, and it runs deep Chevrolet will find new roads in fiction.

    Chevrolet Bel Air
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chevrolet_bel_air.jpg

Jim: Now, uh, Ms. Vito, being an expert on general automotive knowledge, can you tell me... what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet, with a 327 cubic-inch engine and a four-barrel carburetor?
Mona: 'Cause Chevy didn't make a 327 in '55, the 327 didn't come out till '62. And it wasn't offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till '64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top-dead-center.

The Bel Air is Chevrolet's full-size automobile produced between 1941 to 1981, succeeding both the Fleetline and Biscayne. It was initially a two-door hardtop at first where the Bel Air name was designated from 1950 to 1952, until in 1953, changed from a designation for a unique body shape to a premium level of trim applied across a number of body styles.

The second-generation is perhaps considered to be the most popular model to many, as it was also advertised as the "Hot One" by General Motors. The Bel Air is notable for is various features such as stainless steel window moldings, full wheel covers, a Ferrari-inspired grille and its chrome spears on front fenders.

In 1958, the third-generation Bel Air became the halo vehicle for the Chevrolet Impala, available only in hardtop or convertible in its only introductory year and its later generations would use the Bel Air name used in the already existing Impala series, to the point it becomes its successor. Despite that the Bel Air continues its production up until 1981.

    Chevrolet/GMC C/K series

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chevrolet_ck.jpg
Top: Chevrolet C-10 Stepside Pickup
Bottom: Chevrolet K-20 Silverado 4x4

"Now this is a 1994 C/K. [points at the blatant Silverado badge mounted on the side of the truck] Don't believe this! It's not a Silverado. Somebody just stuck that on there. People often glue things on cars."
Scotty Kilmer, The Only Chevy I'd Buy

This truck has many names, and you know it.

The C/K are a series of pickup trucks marketed under both Chevrolet and GMC divisions, manufactured under General Motors from 1960 until 2002, intended to compete with its direct rivals like the Ford F-Series and the Dodge D Series (later, the Dodge Ram). The difference between the two internal model codes is that "C" denotes a two-wheel drive, while "K" denotes a four-wheel drive.

Breaking Old Trends from GM tradition, the C/K series were General Motors' first ever truck not to be a derivative from its GM A platform. Other than pickups, the C/K was also offered in chassis-cab trucks and medium/heavy duty commercial trucks. Some of the models were marketed differently depending on the type such as the C-10 (10 referring to the truck's payload capacity) being called the Chevrolet Apache or in most cases, being referred to the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra.

Production ended in 2002, where it was succeeded by the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra, effectively dropping the C/K moniker.

    Chevrolet Camaro series
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chevrolet_camaro.jpg

"Since we can remember, American muscle car manufacturers have been in non-stop competition with one another about who could build the fastest or most powerful muscle car. Eventually, Ford became famous for building engines that'll last 500,000 miles; then again the Pontiac Firebird proved muscle cars can be stylish and ferocious at the same time, and Chevy shook the entire world with the old Camaro."

This is Chevrolet's line of American mid-sized two-door muscle car. Considered to be a pony car, it's intended to be Chevrolet's answer to the Ford Mustang. It also shared its platform with General Motors' Pontiac Firebird.

Introduced as a 1967 model year, the Camaro first debuted in September 29, 1966, offering various trims and engine types, ranging from the entry-level inline-6 to the high-end 396 cu in L89 V8. High-performing Camaros typically have various levels: RS, SS or Super Sport, and Z/28 referring to the performance package, designed for the SCCA Trans-Am Series. Later generations switched its body to a much more swooped fastback, and large complex rear windows, as well as an IROC-Z variant, referring to the International Race of Champions.

Production of the Camaro initially ended in 2002, before the nameplate was revived for its fifth-generation in 2009, which had the Camaro's body redesigned, based on its own first-generation model. With the sixth-generation, which had minor tweaks on the overall body, the Camaro ceased production at the end of 2023. Despite that, Chevrolet confirms, "This is not the end of Camaro's story."

The car is also known for the origins of it name "Camaro", which was not chosen for any reason other than it sounded cool, although GM researchers did allegedly base it on the pronounciation of "camarade", French for "comrade". They made much use of that definition in the press event during its unveiling — though they did also provide one of their own: When one of the journalists present asked "What is a Camaro?", a GM product manager replied, "A small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs."

    Chevrolet Chevelle

"Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some fuckin' muscle."
Dave Wooderson, Dazed and Confused

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile produced by Chevrolet from 1964 to 1977 in three generations. Part of the General Motors (GM) A-body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet's most successful nameplates. Body styles included coupes, sedans, convertibles, and station wagons.

"Super Sport" versions were produced through the 1973 model year, and the Chevelle Laguna variant from 1973 through 1976. Its platform would also be used for other Chevrolet models: Starting with its second generation in 1964, the El Camino was based on the Chevelle platform (after its limited 1969-60 first generation was radically different), and the G-body Monte Carlo introduced in 1970 also used a platform that was based heavily on the Chevelle platform (although it was lengthened ahead of the firewall). Furthermore, from 1964 through 1969, GM of Canada also sold the Beaumont, which was essentially a modified version of the Chevelle that included a Pontiac-style grille and a LeMans instrument panel.

The third-generation Chevelle also became known for being extensively used in NASCAR competition from 1973 through 1977, the Chevelle Laguna in particular was successful in allowing Cale Yarborough to win 34 races and earn the first two of three consecutive Grand National championships, before the Laguna was made ineligible for competition following the 1977 season.

The Malibu, the top-of-the-line model through 1972, would completely replace the Chevelle nameplate starting with the redesigned and downsized 1978 model year.

    Chevrolet Chevy II / Nova
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chevrolet_chevy_ii_nova.jpg

"Chevrolet was puzzled when they discovered that their sales for the Chevy Nova were off the charts everywhere but in Latin America. They finally realized that "Nova" in Spanish translates to "no go." Not the best name for a car... anywhere "no va."

The Chevrolet Chevy II/Nova is an automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, originally produced in four generations from 1962 to 1979.

The reason for its two names comes from the Nova variant being the top model in the Chevy II lineup until 1968, when the Chevy II nameplate was dropped and Nova became the nameplate for all of the 1969 to 1979 models. It was also one of the various Chevrolet models to come available with a Super Sport (SS) high-performance package.

The Nova was replaced by the 1980 Chevrolet Citation, introduced in the spring of 1979.

The Nova nameplate would return in 1985 for a S-car based (as opposed to the original's X-body platform) subcompact car manufactured by NUMMI (a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota of Japan) that was essentially a rebadged version of the front-wheel drive, fifth-generation Japanese Toyota Sprinter.

The Nova is also known for a popular urban legend that claims that the vehicle sold poorly in Spanish-speaking countries because no va translates to "doesn't go". However, it is considered false; in Spanish "nova" is a distinct word primarily used to refer to the astronomical event (much like in English), and doesn't have the same meaning as "no va". In fact, the car actually sold quite well in Mexico and many Central and South American countries.note  Nova was also the name of a successful brand of gasoline sold in Mexico at the time, further proving that the name confusion was not a problem. There's even an European version of the story, which says the same about the British Vauxhall Nova (a small car that was completely unrelated to the Chevrolet Nova aside from both being built by GM), according to which it had to be sold as an Opel Corsa in Spain due to the same alleged language confusion. This version of the story is also a myth, as the Spanish-market version of the car was known as a Corsa from the outset. In fact, the car was called the Corsa in all markets except the United Kingdom.

America's Sports Car.*

"Since its debut, the 'Vette has charted an unbroken line of pure sports-car innovation. So no wonder it has long been called the representative sports car of the United States."
Luca, Chevrolet Menu Book description, Gran Turismo 7

The Chevrolet Corvette is a line of American two-door, two-seater sports cars, manufactured by Chevrolet since 1953. Noted for its performance, distinctive styling, lightweight bodywork, and competitive pricing, following the cessation of its closest competitor, Chrysler's Dodge Viper in 2017, the Corvette is the only two-seat sports car produced by a major United States auto manufacturer, and is considered Chevrolet's halo car. Named after the corvette, a small maneuverable warship, its generations are indicated sequentially as C[number of generation].

Since its introduction in 1953, the two-seater has steadily moved upmarket. Originally a relatively modest, lightweight 6‑cylinder convertible, subsequent introductions such as V8 engines, competitive chassis innovations, and rear mid-engined layout have led to consideration that the Corvette moved into becoming a full-blown supercar: While the first three Corvette generations (1953-1983) employed body-on-frame construction, since the C4 generation Corvettes have used GM's unibody Y‑body platform, and while the Corvettes used front mid-engine configuration for its first seven generations, it transitioned to a rear mid-engined layout with the C8 generation.

"I like to get in that truck and go up in the hills near where I live, in Vegas, and take my camera. That, to me, is Heaven, being out in nature, taking pictures of the wildlife."

One of the well-known American coupe utility pickups ever made, inspired by Australian utes.

Introduced in 1959, the El Camino adapts from the standard two-door Chevrolet station wagon platform and integrated the cab and cargo bed into the body, instead of the usual pickup body design. This was Chevrolet's answer to the Ford Ranchero following its first run.

While production was short-lived, lasting only 2 years of its run, the El Camino makes a comeback in 1964, basing the coupe utility on the Chevelle platform and in 1978, using GM's G-body platform.

The "El Camino" name literally means "The Path" in Spanish.

Fernando: Listen, I appreciate what you're trying to do, but... my car is the slowest car on the island.
Dom: Was. Pull the seats, the doors, the battery. If it ain't the motor, take it off.

The Chevrolet Special Deluxe Series AH Fleetline was an automobile produced by Chevrolet from 1941 to 1952. From 1946 to 1948 it was a sub-series of the Chevrolet Fleetmaster rather than a series of the Special Deluxe and, from 1949 to 1951, it was a sub-series of both the Chevrolet Special and the Chevrolet Deluxe, being offered in its final as only a sub-series of the latter.

The Fleetline was introduced late in 1941 as a four-door sedan only. In 1942, a fastback two-door "Aerosedan" was also offered, while the sedan was renamed "Sport Master". Production would be indefinitely delayed in 1942 due to World War II, after 110,000 had been made, though several thousand Chevrolet coupes and sedans were produced during the war years for military staff use. Production for civilians resumed in 1945.

In 1947, the Fleetline made up more than 70% of Chevrolet's sales. The original series was produced through 1948, and for the years' 1949 through 1952 models, the fastback was the only one offered. A redesigned Fleetline with reduced body contour and integrated rear fenders was offered also for the 1949 through 1952 model years. It was referred to as a "fastback" because of its distinct sloping roof which extends through to the trunk lid. The Fleetline during the 1949 to 1950 years also had a lower look than a sedan, with the windshield being one inch shorter in height than a standard contemporary sedan. The 1949 to 1951 models were made in both four-door and two-door models, with only the lower portion of the doors being interchangeable with a sedan door. Chevrolet dropped the Fleetline in 1953.

The Fleetline is currently highly collectable, with many being made into hot rods, with the common Chevrolet 350 small block V8 and the 350 or 400 turbo transmission being used.

    Chevrolet Impala series

Fins, fleets, and everything in between.

"The Impala, of course, has all the things other cars have... and a few things they don't. But none of that stuff's important. This is the stuff that's important. The Army man that Sam crammed in the ashtray—it's still stuck there. The Legos that Dean shoved into the vents. to this day, heat comes on, and you can hear 'em rattle. These are the things that make the car theirs. Really theirs. Even when Dean rebuilt it from the ground up, he made sure all these little things stayed. 'Cause it's the blemishes that made her beautiful."
Chuck Shurley, Supernatural

Perhaps every American would ever consider this as the most popular automobile that sold millions and millions throughout its lifespan, bestowing it to become the iconic flagship car of the brand. That is the Chevrolet Impala.

Named after the graceful African antelope, the Chevrolet Impala is a full-size automobile introduced in 1958 as part of General Motors' 50th Milestone Celebration. Its first model was distinguished from other cars by its notable symmetrical triple taillights, and offered in either a hardtop (Sport Coupe) or a convertible. Throughout its production lifespan, the Impala evolved in offering various body tipes, whether in sedan, hardtop or station wagon, and by 1961, a high-performing Super Sport (SS) was offered as an option.

The Impala remained popular among Americans up until the first hiatus in the mid-1980's. Between 1994 to 1996, the Impala was revived as a 5.7-liter V8–powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan. By exactly the Turn of the Millennium in 2000, the Impala was reintroduced again, this time as front-wheel drive car.

The classic 1964 Impala is widely famous as a staple lowrider car, commonly associated with West Coast culture which fans tend to call it the "Six-Four". Impalas are also a very common police car, extremely used by American Law Enforcement. Finally, the Impala would be Chevrolet's stock car for NASCAR, replacing the Monte Carlo in 2007 up until 2013 where it's replaced by the Holden Commodore-based Chevrolet SS.

Hank: Is Jesse still driving the '89 Chevy Monte Carlo, as far as you know?
Diane: If he had spent half as much time as money on his education as he has on that ridiculous bouncing car...
Hank: Low rider, huh?

Named after the city of Monaco, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a two door sports coupe produced from 1969 to 2007 (but it was Put on a Bus from 1989 to 1994). It was marketed as Chevrolet's first ever personal luxury car, introduced as a 1970 model that spanned through six generations and was closely related to the Pontiac Grand Prix, another car from General Motors, the same group as Chevrolet.

Its initial model in 1970 is distinguished by its chromed rectangular grille with is bonnet adorned by a Corinthian helmet. Its powertrain is powered by either a 350-400 cu Turbo-Fire or a 402-454 cu Turbo-Jet V8 engine, with two-barrel carburetor, though various optional packages were available as well, with the powerful Super Sport option called the Monte Carlo SS 454 is the sportiest ever offered with 360 rated hp and a four-barrel carburetor. The Monte Carlo is usually a 2-door hardtop and is usually a front-engine, rear-wheel drive.

In 1973, the Monte Carlo was redesigned, transitioning from a hardtop to a coupe. Prominent to this second-generation features an egg-crate grille, revised front bumper and its swooping double-shell roof, improving noice reduction. Like the previous generation, the Super Sport package is also an available option. Its third and fourth generation also offers V6 engines for entry-level Monte Carlos with its body bearing similarities to not just the Pontiac Grand Prix, but also the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and the Buick Regal. In 1988, the Monte Carlo seized production before it was replaced by the Chevrolet Lumina.

The Monte Carlo returned in 1995 as a coupe version to the Lumina. Breaking Old Trends from its previous iterations has the V6 as the standard, and is now a front-wheel drive car, though a V8 version Monte Carlo in 2006 makes a come back, with several bespoked trims. The Monte Carlo discontinued for good in 2007.

Chevrolet Monte Carlos have been long used in NASCAR, where the car saw lasting success, and winning titles from big names such as Dale Earndhart, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson in the Cup Series. The Monte Carlo would retire in 2007 and was replaced by the Impala.

"It's not a good ride for that, it's cool and it's fun every once in a while to take it out for a Sunday drive. But I wouldn't run errands in it."

The Silverado is Chevrolet's wide range of trucks introduced in 1999, as a replacement to the long-running C/K series, where the Silverado name takes its name from one of the trim levels of the said C/K. The Silverado is usually offered in either a full-size pickup, a chassis-cab truck or a medium-duty truck.

Like the C/K series, the Silverado shares an mechanically identical pick as the GMC Sierra, while in Mexico it's marketed as the Chevrolet Cheyenne. The Silverado competes with its rivals, the Ford F-Series, Ram pickup, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan, but amongst those, the Silverado is one of the best selling pickup trucks in the United States, having sold over 12 million units since its introduction in 1998.

    Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevrolet Suburban is a line of automobiles built by the Chevrolet division of General Motors. It is the longest-used automobile nameplate in the world; in production since the 1935 model year, it is currently in its twelfth generation. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of modern full-size SUVs, combining a station wagon body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its predecessors (the Advance Design, the Task Force, and the C/K), the Silverado pickup truck shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban.

Traditionally, the Suburban has been one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, and has been marketed by both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire history; GMC has used several different nameplates for the model line, marketing the Suburban as the GMC Yukon XL since 2000 (as opposed to most GMC Yukon variants, which are based on the Chevrolet Tahoe). Cadillac also rebrands the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, the Holden brand marketed right-hand-drive versions of the model line.

The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).

In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce took the unusual step of unveil a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

    Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chevrolet_tahoe_generations.jpg

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other types of trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively.

Its origins trace back to 1982, when Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s; GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991, but Chevrolet, however, waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States (and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models), while the name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban (which is sometimes marketed as the GMC Yukon XL) primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.
