Characters / Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

Go To

As the Spiritual Successor to the Suikoden franchise, this game has over 100 characters to recruit and even more to meet and interact with, each of them with their own quirks and zany personalities.

Due to the sheer number of characters in the game, this page is in need of some wiki magic. To avoid too much confusion, we've tried to sort most characters based on where they appear in Allraan.

    open/close all folders
    The Main Trio

In general

  • Chromatic Arrangement: Nowa (Red), Seign (Blue), and Marisa (Green).
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: While all three are skilled in close combat, agility, and magic, each has a particular specialty.
    • Seign is the fighter, as a knight who fights with a sword and shield.
    • Marisa is the mage who fights with a sharpened staff and is the most magically oriented in terms of stats and her backstory as a Guardian.
    • Nowa is the thief, focusing on speedy, unpredictable strikes that catch his opponents off guard.
  • Magic Knight: All three are capable as fighters or mages, but Seign is equally weighted for both stats and has the most versatility with his runes, Nowa is weighted toward physical attacks, and Marisa is much more heavily geared for magic.
  • Freudian Trio:
    • Marisa is the id: she comes off as cool-headed, but is the most likely to lose her temper and attempt to escalate.
    • Seign is the superego: he almost consistently keeps an even temper and is typically the one who rationalizes the situation.
    • Nowa is the ego: while he can and does get passionate, he's not reckless about it and typically defers to wiser council. He also is prone to ruminating on the morality and justification of what all is happening and his role in it.

Nowa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nowa.png
Venturer of the World
Voiced by: Gakuto Kajiwara (Japanese), Andrew Wheildon-Dennis (English)

The hero of the story. A young warrior from the parochial Kyshiri Village, he joins the Eltisweiss Watch under the command of the veteran Garr in Arenside Village, joining a mission into the Runebarrows alongside the young Galdean lieutenant Seign Kesling and his second, Hildi. When war erupts as a result of what they find, he gradually gets dragged into becoming the leader of a resistance movement.

  • Bash Brothers: His "Friendship Combo" unite attack with Seign — which comes in very handy in the early parts of the game when the pair are separated from the rest of the Watch, as it targets all enemies.
  • Chick Magnet: Seems to attract the attention of quite a few of his female comrades, going by late-game conversations.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Various characters state that he's always had a habit of "meddling" in others' affairs — something which he also freely admits to.
  • Dual Wielding: He uses two bladed hooks as his primary weapon.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The very first scene in the game has Nowa use a small stone to scare off a hawk attacking a bluebird, already showing his habit of "meddling".
  • Fighting Your Friend: Having bonded with Seign during their trip to the Rune-Barrows, Nowa finds himself engaged in a dramatic one-on-one duel months later after the Watch is subject to a Frame-Up at the hands of Dux Aldric's forces, and Seign is bound by his code of honour to side with the Empire.
  • Frontline General: Par the course for the heroes of the Suikoden series, the game's inspiration. And in Eiyuden, Nowa is no exception.
  • I Call It "Vera": When he picks out his first beigoma top, he's asked to name it, as beigoma players often do. The name he decides to go with? "Whirled Peace."
  • Magnetic Hero: By necessity, with over 100 recruitable characters potentially on offer.
  • Only Sane Man: Nowa is a perfectly lovely dude and very friendly, and is more than willing to help almost anyone, but when he meets some of the weirder or outright insane people he recruits, he shows a more wry, Deadpan Snarker side to really illustrate just how much Closer to Earth he is.
  • The Protagonist: Nowa is the main hero of the story; a seemingly innocuous country lad who joins the Watch to protect his friends. Unlike most heroes from the game's sister-series, Suikoden, he isn't a nameable An Adventurer Is You character, but rather a fully-rounded protagonist. In that regard, he is most similar to Kyril from Suikoden Tactics, and sports a similar colour pallette.
  • Puppet King: A mild version. While he is the The Leader of the resistance against the empire, he is asked to do so by Perrielle as a temporary measure until she comes back, and it is his advisors and allies who actually do the planning and manage the movement while Nowa focuses mostly on the situations that require a show of strength. This is deliberate on Perrielle's part, as she deduces that people are more inclined to follow a common man who courageously rose up against the Emperor's tyranny, as opposed to a noble like her who could have an ulterior motive.
  • Serious Business: The beigoma sidequest. The way he treats the minigame, you'd think it was on the same level of gravity as the actual war he's fighting. Though, to be fair, beigoma players around Allraan tend to act exactly the same way about the minigame.
  • Working-Class Hero: Nowa is an ordinary country boy from an insignificant village, who is galvanised to lead the Resistance against the encroaching Galdean Empire after they burn down his childhood hometown. As Perrielle rightly notes, it's certainly a Cliché, but it makes for the perfect relatable backstory to get the people on-side, and Nowa becomes the poster-boy for the Resistance under her watch, eventually attaining Folk Hero status.

Seign Kesling

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seign.png
Imperial Prodigy
Voiced by: Kenji Akabane (Japanese), Will De Renzy-Martin (English)

A young Galdean soldier, and the heir apparent to the House Kesling name. A chance mission where he meets Nowa of the Eltisweiss Watch causes him to question the morality of what his empire is doing to the whole of Allraan.

  • Defector from Decadence: Upon learning that the Emperor has been assassinated, he decides to defect from Galdea and oppose Dux Alric, taking his personal regiment along with him.
  • Deuteragonist: His story, while not as central as Nowa's, is very important to the plot, and all but becomes the Number Two to Nowa.
  • Good-Looking Privates: Seign sports the neat blue uniform of the Galdean Empire and is a pleasing-looking Pretty Boy.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Seign believes himself to be this for his late elder brother, Arthur, whom he believes to be superior in all things. Hildi and Valentin, both of whom know Arthur, state that while he was indeed a talented man, so is Seign, and he shouldn't belittle himself in comparison.
  • Not So Above It All: Though he handles it with more grace than Valentin, he isn't above teasing Pohl for having a crush.
  • Oblivious to Love: He doesn't catch on that Yaelu develops a crush on him during her time in his retinue. It's even addressed in Yaelu's rooftop event with Nowa, who wishes her luck in getting through it.
  • Princely Young Man: Seign is the second-born son to House Kesling, a powerful imperial family, and has the bearing and elegant personality to go with it. His teammates, especially his adjutant Hildi, treat him with the utmost respect and deference.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: He already has a lot of misgivings about Dux Aldric's invasion of Grum County. Receiving word that Aldric assassinated the emperor is the final push he needs to turn against the tyrant.
  • Spoiled Sweet: He comes from an extreme amount of wealth, but he's a good man who defects from his prestigious position to do the right thing and save lives.
  • The Stoic: Seign is reserved and calm, rarely letting his emotions get the better of him.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: While he initially goes along with the empire's decision to forcefully occupy the Grum County, he is aware that those actions are not just at all and later defects once Dux Aldric assassinates the Emperor in order to consolidate his powers.

Marisa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marisaeiyuden.png
Guardian Girl
Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka (Japanese), Kimberly Woods (English)

A youthful Guardian of Yarnaan, who was adopted into the village as an orphan and raised as one of their own, she comes into conflict with the Galdean Empire once their soldiers begin to intrude on the Runebarrows that she's been sworn to protect.

  • Action Girl: While she's primarily a magic user, she's very good in a physical fight, and is able to keep up with Nowa and Seign just fine.
  • Afro Asskicker: Has an afro tied back with a ribbon, and is a fierce fighter.
  • Army Scout: Her technical role within the Guardians: She is supposed to scout out threats to Runebarrows.
  • Blow You Away: She has the best compatibility with Wind magic, and her unique skill is Wind-oriented.
  • Forest Ranger: Is one of the Guardians, a clan that protects the forests of Allraan. Decked out in green, to boot.
  • Hot-Blooded: Of the three main heroes, she's the one most likely to lose her cool when her home or friends are threatened.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Pooby, Marisa's furry little pet... something that rides on her shoulder.
  • Martial Arts Staff: Her primary weapon is a sharpened staff that she both uses as a conduit for her magic and in combat.
  • Nature Hero: Marisa is one of the 'Guardians', a clan that protects and maintains the forests.
  • Parrot Pet Position: Pooby, Marisa's Loyal Animal Companion who rides around on her shoulder.
  • Pet Baby Wild Animal: Marisa found Pooby in some ancient ruins, not quite knowing exactly what Pooby is, and decided to adopt them as her own.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Once again, Pooby, a tiny adorable baby... something. His Pokémon Speak comes out in tiny adorable squeaks, and Lian asks how Pooby can be so cute just three seconds after hearing and seeing him.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Marisa sports a very long scarf designed in tribal patterns.
  • Shoulder Teammate: Pooby is permanently exhausted-looking little fluffy creature who sits on Marisa’s shoulder and occasionally contributes a bit of cute Pokémon Speak to the conversation.
  • Tritagonist: Of the three core heroes, her story is given the least attention at first: Her story involves the Runebarrows and the lenses moreso than the war with the Imperials. She actually shows up initially as a Guest-Star Party Member since Runebarrows and Leene were involved. She shows up later when the Dux's lens research, and Diradhe's attack on her home, bring the Guardians into more direct conflict.

    The Eltisweiss Watch

Garr

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garr_4.png
Veteran of the Watch
Voiced by: Hiroya Egashira (Japanese), Erik Braa (English)

A veteran mercenary with the Eltisweiss Watch, and originally the leader of the fateful squad that finds the Primal Lens that kickstarts the war.

  • Beast Man: Garr is a huge werewolf-like creature, a species referred to as "Beastyn."
  • The Big Guy: Of the original Watch squad, Garr is easily the tankiest fighter, representing great power and defense but very slow speed.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: His unlockable background states that he loves cats even though most of them are scared of him and his plan for retirement involves buying a bunch of cats to live with.
  • Old Soldier: Garr is a veteran mercenary of many battles, having been born and raised in a culture in which combat is an everyday part of life.
  • Mighty Glacier: High HP, attack, and defense... but oftentimes one of the slowest members of the party. It's not unusual for him to act last in battle.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pancakes. With extra syrup.

Lian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lian_0.png
Full Thrust Fighter
Voiced by: Sayaka Senbongi (Japanese), Anjali Kunapaneni (English)

An excitable martial artist who joined the Watch three days before Nowa did — a fact that she won't let him forget.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: She fights unarmed, using her skill in martial arts.
  • Collateral Damage: For their "Senior & Junior Combo" rune-lens attack, Nowa first leaps in to slash up the opponent before Lian winds up her "Full Torque Spinning Punch" — to send both Nowa (screaming) and the enemy hurling skywards.
  • Expy: Of Nanami from Suikoden II. Fast, pretty strong in battle, not the highest defense, loves to tease the hero (Nowa, in this case), and even has a similar hairstyle and outfit.
  • Genki Girl: She's a sweet, kooky young woman, and is constantly upbeat and energetic.
  • Glass Cannon: She’s very fast, often going first in battle, and can definitely give the enemies a beating — in the early parts of the game, she typically deals the highest damage from standard attacks. The trade off is that her defense is abysmal, and she requires top equipment and buffing rings to compensate.
  • In the Blood: Lian’s father trained her from a young age in their own family dojo, and if she’s to be believed, she was able to do roundhouse kicks before she even learned to walk.
  • Megaton Punch: Her "Full Torque Spinning Punch" lens skill is a massive wind-up punch, which sends the opponent flying, complete with A Twinkle in the Sky.
  • Plucky Girl: When the Empire invaded the League of Nations, the first thing she did was storm out of the house to join the Watch resistance movement and fight back. She maintains a brave, indefatigable vibe throughout most of the game.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Super-spicy ramen.
  • Wheel o' Feet: Sports these when she runs off excitedly.

Mio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mio_67.png
East Reach Swordswoman
Voiced by: Masayo Fujita (Japanese), Cia Court (English)

A taciturn swordswoman from the East Reach who works part-time for the Watch, oftentimes leaving for her own reasons only to return when called upon.

  • Cool Big Sis: Lian looks up to her (even giving her the nickname "Mimi") and Mio, in turn, acts as a mentor to Lian.
  • Fragile Speedster: Incredibly fast, but surprisingly on the weak side when it comes to physical strength. Her low HP and defense don't help things. Her attacks at least become much stronger in the late game, but she's still not exactly built to take much damage.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Hakugin, a shinobi who also hails from the East Reach. Though Mio does note that Hakugin is a formidable (and extremely aggressive) foe with whom she's sometimes reluctant to spar.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: Mio fights from the draw with her katana. Her rune even calls this iaido.
  • Magikarp Power: Mio is the textbook example on the physical side of things: she's got good dexterity (so her skills hit like a truck) and speed, but her regular physical attack is very weak and that's what she'll be relying on most of the time. When she gets to the late game, her physical attack absolutely skyrockets naturally and she becomes a Glass Cannon who can get the first turn off and do wild damage.
  • No Sense of Direction: Her background reveals that she gets lost very easily and is terrible at navigation, which isn't helped by the fact that she tends to use moving objects as landmarks.
  • One-Hit Kill: Her “Rune of Iaido Strike” does a large amount of slash damage to one enemy, and occasionally causes instant death — even to boss characters like the Ancient Seed, for example.
  • The Quiet One: Mio is elegant, composed, and no-nonsense, rarely saying much.
  • Samurai: She's got the look down pat, fights with a katana, and sports the long hair tied in a low ponytail associated with Sengoku-era noblewomen.
  • The Stoic: She's calm, serious, and focused on the task at hand.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Sasa dango (a dumpling served and boiled in a bamboo chute).

Perrielle Grum

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lperrielle.png
Charismatic Noble
Voiced by: Maaya Uchida (Japanese), Erin Yvette (English)

The governess of Grum County, having inherited the position from her late father at a young age. Her age belies the fact that she's a shrewd diplomat and leader, a fact not unnoticed by both friend and foe alike.

  • Accidental Declaration of Love: Before Nowa escapes Eltisweiss during the invasion by the Empire, she says he reminds her of someone she once loved, and then tries to play it off with a silly joke. Later in the story, she states that she takes it back: Nowa's nothing like this person.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Called "Perry" by several of her comrades.
  • Berserk Button: She's appalled by Dux Aldric's atrocities, sure, but she really, irrationally hates how his smug face looks.
  • Bitch Slap: Perrielle is available for the active party, though she’s completely unarmed and her standard attack amounts to a series of haughty slaps. Her deficiency in physical combat is made up for via her high magic affinity.
  • Blue Blood: Perrielle's rank in the local peerage is that of Countess, and she descends from a cadet branch of one the League of Nations' royal families. She is most often referred to as "Your Ladyship" / "Oujo-sama" in-series, and rules over the County of Grum from her splendid manor.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In a meeting with the other League of Nations leaders and the Dux of Aldrich (representative of The Empire), Perrielle — serving as an adjunct, no less — she calls out the Empire for completely shutting out the League of Nations regarding any research on the Primal Rune Lens that the League helped them acquire, as well as not paying their share of the costs for the expedition, and icily correcting the Dux when he calls her "Miss" instead of "Countess." She also sees through the Empire's very transparent intentions regarding their plans to annex land.
  • Expy: To Odessa Silverburg, the woman who founded the Liberation Army who then entrusts the hero to lead the army in her stead, right down to the dying part, although Perrielle only dies if not all the heroes are recruited. However, unlike Odessa, Perrielle only dies by shielding the hero instead of a random child plus her death only happens near the climax of the game.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: If the player does not recruit all save one of the Heroes, Perrielle takes a poisoned arrow.
  • Killed Off for Real: If even a single hero isn't recruited, she dies taking a poisoned arrow for Nowa. She does not get better, and dies in her sleep after saying goodbye.
  • Last Request: If she is killed, her last request is for her loyal servant Janquis to pat her on the head as she sleeps, as that's what he always used to do.
  • Light 'em Up: She comes equipped with a Rune of Light.
  • Nerves of Steel: She does not mince words and is not afraid to stand up to the Empire, calling the Dux of Aldrich out to his face in a meeting (filled with the other League of Nations leaders, no less) for the Empire's lack of communication regarding an artifact that the League of Nations helped them fine, as well as failing to pay their fair share of the expedition's expenses.
  • Pragmatic Hero: She's fully aware that if she led a rebellion against Dux Aldric, there are many who would consider it to merely be Grum seeking power, which is why she asks Nowa to lead, as a commoner would never have that suspicion.
  • Refuge in Audacity: She stays behind as Eltisweiss is invaded, and personally holds an audience with Dux Aldric, where she frankly and defiantly tells him that not only will she not bend the knee, he will let her go on her own accord. Aldric is actually impressed by how ballsy she is, and agrees to the request. True enough, she turns up no worse for wear in Euchrisse, joining the Alliance after the fact.
  • Rousing Speech: Her ability as a Support Character is to give the party a pep talk via a megaphone, which boosts their attack and speed.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Just before the final battle, Perrielle offers the remainder of House Grum's fortune to buy safe passage to leave the battle. It's a scheme on Melridge's part that she happily participates in.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: With Dux Aldric. She gives as much as she gets, although the dux seems to get more enjoyment from it than she does.
  • Spirited Young Lady: A young, upper-class woman of 18 who is very intelligent, outspoken, bold, confident, and frank; at the same time, she's also refined, feminine, and ladylike.
  • Spoiled Brat: While it's not an outright excessive case and she is genuine about using her postion to protect and lead her people properly, she does tend to get very stubborn and bratty when she's not getting what she wants. This is especially shown whenever she talks about what she wants to have for dinner that day.
  • Squishy Wizard: An interesting case. Her physical attack is passable, but since she has the defense of wet paper, she has no business being in the front lines (which is the only place she can use it). She's much better off slinging spells from the back row.
  • Support Party Member: While Perrielle can fight (and does an okay job of it), she's arguably much more useful as a support party member, as she can provide a party-wide attack buff at no cost.
  • Taking the Bullet: If all the heroes are not recruited, she takes the poisoned arrow meant for Nowa.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: In a tone loaded with Passive-Aggressive Kombat, she corrects Dux Aldric when he addresses her as "Miss" instead of "Countess", her proper title.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tomato and cheese sandwiches.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: To her father, who often showered her with gifts, but never actually ever praised her.

Ymir

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ymir_55.png
Skilled Watch Chief
Voiced by: Yuma Uchida (Japanese), Jared Zeus (English)

Perrielle's former tutor, the sardonic quartermaster of the Watch, who's responsible for doling out missions, meals, and sass to his charges.

  • Aloof Archer: As a general in military engagements, he specializes in bow combat. As for the aloof part... well, see some other tropes on this very page for proof of that.
  • Deadpan Snarker: His default tone is weary deadpan, and in their early interactions, he takes exception to poor Nowa, usually calling him by some sarcastic, grandiose title like "O' Great Captain, Sir".
  • Jaded Professional: He constantly makes snarky remarks to Nowa and has a weary "Why me?" attitude about his duties. But his job isn't terribly difficult, Lady Perrielle doesn't mistreat him in the least, and he doesn't really have to shoulder more than his share of the Watch's workload.
  • Parental Substitute: He rescued Sumire from a ravaged village, and took her in. He did not adopt her, but instead had her assist him with Watch duties.
  • Sour Supporter: Ymir is a loyal member of the Watch, and Lady Perrielle's right hand man, but his tone is contemptuously sarcastic and he conducts himself with fatigued disinterest much of the time.

Sabine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sabine_0.png
Pragmatic Guard
Voiced by: Mutsumi Tamura (Japanese), Stephanie Cannon (English)

An experienced swordswoman in the service of Countess Perrielle.

  • Action Girl: One of the many in this game, but she's consistently one of Nowa's toughest fighters in story.
  • Dual Wielding: Sabine wields a pair of short swords in battle.
  • Expy: The older, mature and badass swordswoman of the army, like Valeria from the first two Suikoden entries or Isabel from Suikoden V.
  • Leotard of Power: Sabine is an aggressive warrior, heading out to battle in little more than a bathing costume, and sporting only minimal armour.
  • Old Soldier: She and Garr note that she's had her fair share of years in battle (accompanying bios note that she's an experienced 38 years old; amongst the older ladies in the cast).
  • Older Than They Look: She's 38, but could pass for a woman in her 20s.
  • Old Flame: Her former husband, Dalton. She actually finds him to be a perfectly fine man, but she's no interest in marrying him again.
  • Those Two Guys: In the past with Garr. They were known as the Howling Wind when they fought together.
  • Wild Card: Sabine is a mercenary through and through, and during the evacuation of Eltisweiss, following the Empire's invasion, she demands to stick close to Countess Perrielle, as she's the least likely target of violence.

Janquis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/janquis.png
Loyal Elderly Steward
Voiced by: Shōto Kashii (Japanese), Andres Williams (English)

The loyal butler of the Grum family.

  • The Jeeves: He's the in-universe equivalent to a classic British butler and is ever loyal to his mistress, Countess Perrielle.
  • Money Multiplier: His ability while in the party increases the amount of baqua you can get.
  • Old Retainer: He's served Perrielle's family since her late father's days as Earl of Grum.
  • Parental Substitute: He loves Perrielle like a daughter due to his closeness to the family, especially because her late father, despite loving her, was often preoccupied with his role as the leader of Grum County. The feeling, for her part, is mutual, and he's one of the few who she considers a close confidant. And if Perrielle dies taking a poisoned arrow, her Last Request is for Janquis to pat her head, as he used to do before she went to sleep.
  • Undying Loyalty: To his mistress — he's always by her side.

Sumire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sumire_8.png
Light of the Watch
Voiced by: Yoshino Nanjo (Japanese), Nneka Okoye (English)

A young elf who manages the HQ warehouse.

  • Bag of Sharing: Her speciality — she looks after the HQ warehouse, where all items and equipment can be dropped off, stored and retrieved when necessary.
  • Cheerful Child: Sumire is just 12 years-old (positively embryonic in elf-years) and bears the moniker "Light of the Watch" in recognition of her sweet, sunny personality.
  • Doomed Hometown: The dark elven village was destroyed and there are no other dark elves in game. Sumire survived and was found by Ymir. He took her in and she worked managing inventory for the Watch.
  • Our Elves Are Different: Sumire is an elf, and as opposed to the usual peaches and cream skintone and statuesque height associated with elves, she sports ash-brown skin, amber eyes, and is of a petite build. She is specifically referred to as a dark elf.
  • True Craftsman: She dedicates herself to her craft so ably that not even a single cockroach gets inside her storeroom.

Cassandra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cassandra_52.png
Enchanting Innkeeper
Voiced by: Yuko Kaida (Japanese), Claire Wyatt (English)

A seductive elven woman who runs the HQ inn.

  • Boobs-and-Butt Pose: Her artwork emphasises both features.
  • Boring, but Practical: Adding her to the party as a Support Party Member allows Nowa to change up the active party at save points. Simple, not too exciting, but very useful nonetheless.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: Of the 'bedroom eyes' variety, befitting her sultry appearance.
  • Expy: Of Jeane, the recurring Runemistress from the Suikoden series. Things both women have in common include being Ms. Fanservice, with outfits that draw attention to their hips, long legs, and busts; being of unspecified age (Cassandra is an elf, and Jeane's situation is unknown, but she's believed to possibly be extremely long-lived); having long, wavy hair and half-lidded eyes in their artwork; and having breathy, seductive voices and flirtatious demeanors. The primary differences are hair color (Cassandra's hair is black, Jeane's is white), clothing (Cassandra wears clothes that are very tight, but don't show much skin, while Jeane wears as little as she can get away with), and services rendered (Cassandra runs the inn, while Jeane runs the Rune Shop and can be used in combat in later games). Her artwork even recalls Jeane's Suikoden II artwork, with both of them sitting atop what looks to be expensive, draped fabric.
  • Interspecies Romance: She left the forest because she fell in love with a human, and she loved him fiercely until his death. This was long enough ago to be "ancient history" in her mind.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: She sports almost floor-length hair and is a languid, flirty she-elf.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Not only does Cassandra sport an outfit that enhances her enormous, heaving bust, but she's also voiced with a sexy, breathy tone, and when Nowa checks in to her inn, she always ends conversations with a flirty "hee-hee-hee~!" Production notes reveal that she was "envisioned as a voluptuous elf".
  • Nice Girl: Is always very pleasant and friendly, and comforts Sumire during a stressful moment.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Cassandra sports a veritable river of long, glossy black hair combined with a porcelain skin-tone, features which enhance her beauty.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Cassandra is amongst the tallest of the female sprites and a real beauty.
  • The Tease: Often makes flirtatious, innuendo-laden remarks to Nowa, such as having a bottle of wine that's "begging to be uncorked," and punctuates her statements with a seductive chuckle.
  • Trauma Inn: She's responsible for running the HQ inn, which allows the party to rest up, switch companions, and save the game.
  • Wine Is Classy: She’s an elegant elven woman, and loves wine. Artist Junko Kawano states in her production notes, "She'd be able to drink anyone under the table but still have the patience to run an inn; while having the finesse to discern her patrons' unique quirks with a single glance."

    Seign's Retinue

Seign's personal military unit, consisting of his closest friends and eventually other Imperials he befriends.

Hildi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hildi.png
Flawless Aide
Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa (Japanese), Jess Nesling (English)

Seign's aide-de-camp and adjutant, she often serves as the more grounded, logical voice to him.

  • Consummate Professional: Hildi is defined by her composed, utterly professional conduct in her capacity as Seign's adjutant, and rarely succumbs to emotion or high drama (unless Seign is threatened).
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At first, she comes off as detached from almost everyone - as time goes on (and particularly when she joins the Alliance), she lets the mask slip and reveals a kind, just woman who holds all the same idealism that Seign does.
  • Good-Looking Privates: Hildi is a blonde beauty and sports the blue military uniform of the Empire, topped off with a jaunty little garrison cap.
  • Making a Splash: Starts with a Water Rune.
  • Scars Are Forever: While it's never seen in-game, Hildi bears a few scars from her drills at the Imperial Academy. She's actually very self-conscious about them.
  • The Stoic: She has no time for frivolty, and even the theater master says that she's good for stoic calm roles, but nothing else.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Sugar toast.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is utterly loyal to Seign and always refers to him respectfully as, "Lieutenant".

Valentin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valentin_4.png
Brave Imperial Officer
Voiced by: Yuki Ono (Japanese), George Weightman (English)

Seign's Second Lieutenant who specializes in intelligence gathering.

  • The Charmer: He's a handsome, charismatic soldier who specializes in gathering intelligence, so naturally, he's quite able to make friends in the purpose of that. He was actually a lot more straight laced before his friend (and Seign's brother) died.
  • Handsome Lech: He's handsome and never passes up a moment to flirt.
  • Nice Guy: Valentin is never anything less than polite to everyone, whether they're friend or foe.
  • The Spymaster: Valentin has his fingers in many pies, and learns of many secrets.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Bitter chocolate.
  • Working-Class Hero: Unlike Seign, Valentin had to work his way up from Lowtown.

Pohl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pohl.png
Technology Researcher
Voiced by: Atsushi Abe (Japanese), Richard Stranks (English)

The genius behind the creation of the rune tank, Pohl is Seign's mechanically gifted subordinate.

  • Attack Drone: In combat, he uses two flying drones armed with guns as weapons.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: In Eiyuden's ostensibly Standard Fantasy Setting, he's managed to create and fight with attack drones.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He's read Code L's dissertations on runes front to back many times, and wants to discuss his own theories with the man.
  • I Call It "Vera": He refers to his warmachine as "Sylvie".
  • Mythology Gag: As a reference to the character of the same name from Suikoden II, complete with being a youthful redhead. The only difference is that this time, Pohl lives through the game.
  • Robosexual: Pohl exhibits a passion for his rune-tank that borders on infatuation. After he's discovered by Nowa's party whispering sweet nothings to "Sylvie", he becomes so flummoxed that he just trails off mid-sentence, mortally embarrassed.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pot-au-feu (A french dish that mostly consists of a beef broth with beef cuts with vegetables, typically potatoes and carrots but often others such as turnips).
  • Undying Loyalty: To House Kesling. They were his patrons for rune-lens research.

Ivy

Voiced by: Miyu Tomita (Japanese), Fran Burgoyne (English)

One of the researchers working on rune technology, having created mechanical arms. When she found out the truth of what her experiments were to be used for, she's incensed and turns against the Imperials.

  • Hot-Blooded: Her default state is "aggressive."
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She's incredibly short, is fully aware of it, and it bothers her. She still packs a massive punch.
  • Power Fist: She has two mechanical arms attached to harnesses in combat.
  • Wrench Wench: She's a skilled engineer, and fights using Magitek arms.

Yaelu

Voiced by: Miyuki Sato (Japanese), Rae Lim (English)

A young girl from the Nosfarian territory that was ceded to the Imperials. Unfortunately for her and her brother, the town's natural ability to use rune lenses caught the attention of the mad Dux.

  • Casting a Shadow: Her special darkness rune allows her to blind enemies.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Her bangs completely hide her eyes. She has this in common with her brother and the rest of the people from her village.
  • My Greatest Failure: Valentin had a choice to rescue either her or Mihlu, as too many going missing would be suspicious. Valentin picks Yaelu, and she struggles with this, as Mihlu loses a hand as a result of this.
  • Rescue Romance: She very obviously falls for Seign after he and his squad save her fellow villagers from Aldric.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's...incredibly shy.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Blueberry pie, which she shares with her brother.

Mihlu

Voiced by: Yuki Otani (Japanese), Minh Ton (English)

Yaelu's younger brother who was abducted along with her and the rest of their village.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Thanks to speaking out for his fellow villagers, Mihlu gets his right hand chopped off.
  • Artificial Limbs: After being rescued, Pohl and Ivy are able to cobble together a large red fist for him to use.
  • The Dog Bites Back: He's treated horribly by the Imperials. Once he gets a mechanical fist, he uses it to get some payback.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Like his sister and the rest of his fellow villagers, his eyes are completely hidden by his bangs.
  • Kid Hero: Mihlu is barely into his teenage years at max, but he's remarkably brave, even confronting Dux Aldric personally (and losing a hand for it). Even after that, he gets an artificial replacement by Ivy and fights on the front lines.
  • Shipper on Deck: Seems open to the idea of his sister being romantically involved with Seign, if a few of his conversations at Headquarters are of any indication.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Blueberry pie, which he shares with his sister.

    Marisa's Group

Marisa's core confidants and friends, who accompany her on missions. For information on Garoo, see his entry under "New Nevaeh."

Alwe Arkathies Fawud

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alwe.png
Short-Tempered Elf
Voiced by: Kazutomi Yamamoto (Japanese), Zach Gault (English)

The younger brother of Lakian, an elf of renown. Hating being in his brother's shadow, he joins the Guardians, becoming fast friends with Marisa.

  • Always Second Best: He can't help but feel inadequate to his older brother. When his brother praised his archery, that was what made Alwe want to train hard at it.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He is astoundingly bad when it comes to his feelings for Lilwn. When he was younger, he hid her doll from her as a way to tease, but he then broke it, causing Lakian to chastise him greatly.
  • Fragile Speedster: He's one of the fastest characters, but not very tough.
  • Playing with Fire: He comes equipped with a Fire Rune.

Lilwn Rowad Fawud

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lilwn.png
Kindhearted Elf
Voiced by: Hikaru Tono (Japanese), Jenna Sharpe (English)

A kind elven girl with a talent for natural magic, she joins the Guardians and Marisa out of a sense of duty.

  • All-Loving Hero: Lilwn is defined by her pure, kind spirit, and is constantly positive and dutiful.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: One of most beautiful characters in the game, and also amongst the most true-hearted.
  • Blow You Away: She has a Wind Rune equipped and has an excellent affinity with the element.
  • Elemental Powers: Lilwn has very strong magical abilities, with a high affinity for four elements; Wind, Earth, Light, and Dark.
  • Energy Ball: She attacks with a magic missile fired from her enchanted bracelet.
  • Fragile Speedster: She's very fast, but cannot take much damage.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: She and Marisa are extremely close, and display zero sexual interest in each other, as Lilwn has the hots for Lakian.
  • The Pollyanna: She's an adorably earnest young elf maiden and absolutely nothing gets her down.
  • Sibling Triangle: Caught in a love triangle with Alwe and his older brother Lakian, who both have feelings for her. She remains conflicted. Nowa can encourage her to chose one or the other in her conversation right before the final battle, but her ending says she still doesn't have an answer

Nil

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nil_5.png
Mysterious Girl
Voiced by: Aoi Yūki (Japanese), Elena Sanz (English)

A mysterious girl who was found and abandoned in the Proving Grounds. Once she's activated, she forms an attachment to the people of Yarnaan, particularly Marisa.

  • Ambiguous Robots: Nil might be some form of android. She is seemingly unsure herself as her "memory banks" are empty. Some opine that she is form of a rune golem.
  • Gatling Good: Her weapon is a gatling gun built into her fingertips.
  • More Dakka: Her special attack has her fly into the air and unleash an onslaught of missiles at the opposing party.
  • Mysterious Past: Hinted that she is connected to the ancient civilization that built the Runebarrows, as she was found by Marissa inside the ruins with no memories.
  • The Noseless: She's the only character who's explicitly drawn without a nose.
  • Robot Buddy: She's one for the Guardians, having been found in the Runebarrows and acting quite stilted and mechanical most of the time.
  • Sci-Fi Bob Haircut: In keeping with her android nature, Nil sports a full, glossy bob in cobalt blue.
  • Spock Speak: While she's earnestly trying to become more human in her speech, some of her spoken language is stilted and awkward.

    Grum County

Francesca

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/francesca_3.png
Ill-Tempered Healer
Voiced by: Chinatsu Akasaki (Japanese), Ina-Marie Smith (English)

An extremely volatile young healer, whose personality turns on a dime without warning.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Francesca is a healer by trade, who's normally as sweet as pie, and loves to help others. She's also an aggressive maniac who flies into a thuggish rage at the slightest provocation, and can give enemies a good beating in battle with her surprisingly decent strength stat, while shouting things like "SUCK IT!" and "YOU'RE FRIGGIN' DEAD!" at them.
  • Blatant Lies: An optional late-game conversation with her has her recount her recruitment scene as her "gently admonishing" the thugs who were harassing her. She left out the part where she threatened to break off one guy's fingers and shove them up his ass. When Nowa questions her version of events, she turns on her thug voice and snaps "YEAH?!", causing him to back off.
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: Her skill "Calm Fury" says that it uses 5 SP to boost her Magical abilities for 3 turns. What it actually does is boost her Strength for 3 turns.
  • Bully Hunter: As a child she fought off bullies and protected other children, which explains her thuggish demeanor.
  • Combat Medic: Her primary function, according to her, is as a healer — and she does it well, with a high magic stat, a large MP pool, and a Water Rune by default. But she can also kick some serious ass in physical combat. She can't quite take an ass-whooping herself, however.
  • Crutch Character: While she's useful in the early game for her ability to heal and deal damage, her low health and other characters who are more dedicated fighters/mages will eventually outstrip her.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In an optional bit of dialogue, no less. If you take her with you the first time you go to Treefolk Village, she'll threaten to tear Marisa's face clean off. Why? Because Marisa said "Not one more step, cowards!!" to them.
  • Epic Flail: Uses a morning star as her weapon.
  • Friend to All Children: She would protect other kids from bullies when she was a child; as an adult, she still does her best to show her kind side to children, even urging Nowa to be patient with Faye when the latter is running around the castle and stealing food.
  • Glass Cannon: For a healer, her physical strength is surprisingly high, and she has a chance to stun enemies when attacking. That being said, her HP and defense are horribly low, making her a good candidate for attacking from the back row.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She's very sweet, polite, and soft-spoken... unless someone pisses her off, or she's pumped up in the heat of battle. Then she becomes a loud, violent, trash-talking brute.
  • Hypocritical Humor: One of her battle lines is a woeful "I just hate resorting to violence!!" She also flips into making violent threats on a dime, and trash-talks her enemies while beating the shit out of them.
  • Jekyll & Hyde: A mild-mannered healer one moment, a bloodthirsty maniac the next.
  • Mood-Swinger: See "Hair-Trigger Temper" above. She really has no middle ground. Also invoked by her "Calm Fury" skill.
  • No Indoor Voice: When she's in "violent maniac" mode, her voice is loud, guttural and gruff.
  • Paying It Forward: After a healer saved her life when she was sick as a child, Francesca decided to follow in her footsteps and become a healer herself.
  • Squishy Wizard: As expected for a healer. That being said, she can hit pretty damn hard.
  • Understatement: Her character description? "Ill-Tempered Healer."
  • Used to Be a Tomboy: When she got older, she decided that she had to be more ladylike and tried to shed her more thuggish traits.
  • Vocal Dissonance: When she's calm, her voice is gentle, high-pitched, and feminine. When she's pissed off, her voice gets deeper and rougher, and she shouts.

Mellore

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mellore_3.png
Willful Magical Girl
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (Japanese), Rebecca Hanssen (English)

A vivacious young magic-user and self-described 'magical girl' who joins Nowa's forces to bring "love and justice" to the world.

  • Care-Bear Stare: Her 'Magical Cutie Shot' rune-lens attack involves pummeling the enemy with a giant bright-pink, heart-shaped energy blast.
  • Expy: Of the titular character from Sailor Moon. She wears a sailor fuku with a blue skirt and red bow, has long, blonde hair tied up in twin tails, makes speeches about fighting for love and justice, uses light-based attacks, and her weapon design recalls several of Sailor Moon's (such as the Cutie Moon Rod, Spiral Heart Moon Rod, and Eternal Tiare) with its winged jewel and heart-shaped crystal topping it.
  • For Great Justice: Mellore is obsessive in her mission to stamp out evil forces in the name of love and justice.
  • Frills of Justice: She sports a frothy, frilly costume consisting of a Mini Dress Of Power over a pair of puffy pants, a small cape, gloves and boots accessorised with puffballs, and Girlish Pigtails tied up with voluminous ribbons.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Sports very long bunches that twist and twirl as she moves about.
  • Heart Beat-Down: Mellore attacks from long-range by firing heart-shaped energy balls from her wand.
  • In the Name of the Moon: "By the rune's guiding light, Magical Girl Mellore is coming to get ya!"
  • Kawaiiko: An adorably sweet, enthusiastic cutie complete with a sugary costume of frills and bows to match.
  • Large Ham: She's extremely theatrical and eccentric, extolling the virtues of love and justice in an obsessively earnest manner.
  • Magical Girl Warrior: She's a very proud example, and is quick to note that she's nothing like a mage when Nowa questions what exactly a 'magical girl' actually is.
  • Magikarp Power: Mellore starts out as a mediocre mage who's quickly outclassed by a bunch of other characters in the magic department. In the late game, her magic stat explodes and she can become one of the best magical powerhouses in the whole roster.
  • Sweet Tooth: She loves chocolate cake, which is another shout-out to the eponymous hero of Sailor Moon, who loves cake too.
  • The Power of Love: Mellore has a very high affinity for the Light element, and attacks by firing blasts of heart-shaped energy from her wand, which is topped with a prominent Heart Symbol.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Chocolate cake.

Kuroto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kuroto_6.png
Peace-Loving Hunter
Voiced by: Kengo Tsujii (Japanese), Luke R. Francis (English)

An archer in Grum County who hunts to protect the children of his village from wild beasts.

  • 20 Bear Asses: He will only join Nowa's retinue once three wild boar enemies have been killed, with Nowa Bringing Back Proof as part of the deal.
  • I Call It "Vera": His crossbow is named Emily.
  • Friend to All Children: Kuroto adores the children of his village and fights to keep them safe from the danger he fears is encroaching.
  • Hunk: Kuroto sports chiselled, handsome features and is a well-built, manly man.
  • Long-Range Fighter: He uses his trusty crossbow in combat and is a useful back-row fighter in the early parts of the game.
  • Martial Pacifist: Despite his burly build and manly look, Kuroto is at heart a very peaceful man who just wants to keep his village's kids safe.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Rabbit stew. Fitting for a hunter.

Yume & "Friend"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yume_13.png
Brave Girl and "Friend"
Voiced by: Eri Nagawa (Japanese), Leader Looi (English)

A little girl who lives with her grandmother, she's taken to wandering off into the mountains, having found and tamed a large beast that she calls "Friend."

  • Awesome, but Impractical: Despite the sheer fun of having a huge monster piloted by an adorable six year-old on the squad, Yume and Friend take up two front-row slots, reducing the active party to five and taking up valuable real estate in battle. Friend also doesn't hit that hard in justification of his prime position, and as an S-ranged character, he also must be on the front line to even attack at all.
  • Cheerful Child: At just six years old, Yume is the youngest recruitable character. In personality, she's a charming, sweet little girl.
  • Expy: Yume's character design and backstory of being adopted by a huge, round, furry monster while out looking for her missing mom is lifted whole cloth from My Neighbor Totoro.
  • Gentle Giant: Friend is a huge, furry, slightly demonic looking beast, complete with Glowing Eyes of Doom, but in character, he's a big softie.
  • A Girl and Her X: Yume is a tiny six year-old girl who rides on the back of "Friend", some sort of giant, shaggy beast. Only Friend participates in combat, attacking with his paws.
  • Kid with the Leash: Nobody knows how Yume, a six-year-old little girl, tamed a wild beast, but she has and said beast follows her commands completely happily.
  • Missing Mom: The reason Yume goes out on her own and teams up with "Friend."
  • The Unintelligible: "Friend" only seems capable of saying "Zvort, zvort!"
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Rolled omelets, which her mother would often make for her.

Yusuke

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yusuke_5.png
Big Dreamer!
Voiced by: Shohei Kajikawa (Japanese), Caleb Yen (English)

A former outlaw who has shed his criminal ties, now only wanting to convince the world of his greatness.

  • Disc-One Nuke: He can be recruited the moment you can travel to Xialuke Gate, and his ability to spend turns charging up his attack means he's capable of hitting insane damage numbers that other characters will struggle to match at that point.
  • Face of a Thug: He's first encountered getting accosted by guards for his rough appearance. Nowa stepping in to defend him encourages him to join him.
  • Friend to All Children: He is very close to Faye, and doesn't want Nowa to hurt her, even if she's stealing food.
  • Extremity Extremist: He only fights with kicks, and not even fancy martial arts: His only attack is a single push kick. According to his background, he started doing it after a fight with Iugo, who convinced him that fighting with his fists was too uncouth for him.
  • The Idealist: Yusuke is a very upbeat, positive character, and is deeply convinced of his own future greatness — he's sure he's going to make it "big" someday, and senses that Nowa is his pathway to achieving his goals.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Yusuke is based on a classic Japanese "banchou" or gang leader, down to his outfit, Delinquent Hair, and his hands-rammed-in-pockets stance.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Because of his punk look, Yusuke is often assumed to be up to no good, but he's an honourable person at heart.
  • Sarashi: He sports one as part of his delinquent look.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Charred hamburg steak.

Iugo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iugo.png
Wandering Samurai
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese), Todd Haberkorn (English)

A warrior from the Far East who claims to be on a search for someone.

  • Disk One Nuke: He's likely one of the first characters you'll recruit and maintains excellent stats throughout the game, with some decent rune slots that allows him to remain viable well into the endgame.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He appears in Rising as an NPC before being Promoted to Playable here.
  • Magic Knight: Despite being weighted to physical combat, he's also a fairly good mage, with passable magic attack and MP. However, he has poor compatibility with most Runes save for Fire.
  • Parental Substitute: He was rivals with Aoi's father, and she grew on him as a result.
  • Samurai: A completely literal example and described as such. He looks the part, and wields a giant katana (zanbatou) in battle.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Salted plums.

General Kogen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kogen_1.png
Bandit Leader
Voiced by: Atsushi Imaruoka (Japanese), Michael Schwalbe (English)

  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Upon being defeated, he and his group end up joining Nowa and become his biggest supporters.
  • Hero-Worshipper: After Nowa agrees to spare him, following their battle in the ruins of the castle HQ, Kogen becomes a besotted Nowa Fan Boy, always addressing him as "Cousin" ("Aniki" in Japanese — literally "big brother", an honorific mainly used to refer to someone one considers a superior, within the context of the Yakuza).
  • Large Ham: He's a stout, rowdy loudmouth and prone to melodramatic outbursts.
  • Sigil Spam: His curious personal emblem, featuring five yellow spots arranged like a pair of crossed dango, appears not only on his armour, but also on Yuthus' shield and Zabi's robe and hat.
  • Sublime Rhyme: In Japanese, he's addressed as "Kogen Shōgun".
  • Weaponized Ball: Kogen hurls cannon balls in combat.
  • Wolfpack Boss: He's fought alongside Yuthus and Zabi in his battle against Nowa’s party. The former will take damage for the team while the latter uses magic and will heal his fallen comrades.

Yuthus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuthus.png
Passionate Boy
Voiced by: Tasuku Hatanaka (Japanese), James Alexander (English)

Kogen's young protege who fights to defend his allies.

  • Defeat Equals Friendship: He joins Nowa alongside Kogen and Zabi upon being defeated.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's enormously passionate and prone to outbursts.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Yuthus is unarmed in a conventional sense, using his shield to defend, and also wallop his opponents. His exclusive “Rune of Fortress” allows him to cover all allies in battle.
  • Mouthy Kid: Yuthus sports a permanently outraged expression, slightly piggy features, and is a loud, brattish character with No Indoor Voice.
  • Shield Bash: Sports a yellow wooden shield and uses it as his primary attacking weapon.

Zabi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zabi_4.png
Acerbic Monk
Voiced by: Hikaru Yoshihara (Japanese), Vincent Lai (English)

One of Kogen's fellow bandits, Zabi is known for his arcane mastery.

  • Chinese People: Zabi's look calls to mind a Ming Dynasty courtier.
  • Crutch Character: Upon being recruited he's a step-up from other mage characters at that level but his limited Rune Slots will mean that he'll likely be benched mid-game.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: He joins Nowa alongside Kogen and Yuthus upon being defeated.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: He sports ashen skin, pitch-dark hair, slightly disturbing, staring eyes, and overly-plucked Unusual Eyebrows — all of which lends him a vaguely unsettling appearance.
  • Ethnic Magician: Zabi is an East Asian style of sorceror.
  • The Hyena: He's constantly cackling in a high-pitched voice.
  • Magic Wand: His weapon is a long slender stick that wouldn't look out of place on a stage magician.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: Zabi is an early magic-user for the active party and sports a long green sorcerer's robes and box-shaped hat.
  • Shoot the Medic First: During the fight with Kogen, he'll revive him if he's not dealt with first.
  • White Mage: Slightly surprising, given his unsettling appearance, but Zabi specialises in Water and Wind magic, elements which are largely focussed on healing and buffing.
  • Wind Is Green: Zabi has a strong affinity for the Wind magical element and sports an all-green ensemble.

Voiced by: Riyo Hirayama (Japanese), Andres Williams (English)

A logistical professional who handles provisions and resources alongside Sumire for the Alliance.

  • Bag of Sharing: His specialty — assisted by Sumire, he looks after the HQ warehouse, where all items and equipment can be dropped off, stored and retrieved when necessary.
  • The Generic Guy: In a game filled with a variety of fanciful, vibrant characters, Caine is conspicuous by his comparative normality, dressed in unembellished modern-era clothing with overtones of a fast-food restaurant uniform.
  • Opaque Nerd Glasses: Sports a pair as part of his "straight-laced warehouse manager" persona.

Reid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reid_0.png
Cool Spinadier
Voiced by: Koki Koyasu (Japanese), Nezar Alderazi (English)

An avid beigoma (battling tops) enthusiast travelling around with his beigoma Absolute Zero... until Crash destroys it following a bout.

  • Battle Tops: Reid is a Long-Range Fighter and Improbable Weapon User who uses his beigoma (spinning top) in battle.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Reid won't join the Alliance until Nowa can best him at beigoma.
  • Expy: He's a clear shout out to the Beyblade franchise, and has a definite Kai Hiwatari vibe.
  • Gotta Catch 'Em All: Recruiting Reid is an arduous task, as to do so requires the player to undergo the Beigoma Battle Questline — taking on multiple NPC beigoma players from all over the Allraan continent until they are strong enough to defeat Reid himself.
  • I Call It "Vera": It's not uncommon for beigoma players to name their tops. His is Absolute Zero at first, then Neo Absolute Zero following the rebuild.
  • Serious Business: To him, beigoma is serious as it gets, and he travels the world to fight stronger opponents.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: He's a fiery 13-year-old Pretty Boy with oversized hair and a serious expression, evoking anime series featuring similarly featured protagonists.
  • Wing Ding Eyes: Reid's eyes shine bright with a star-shaped reflection, in keeping with his overtly anime design style and passionate personality.

Dr. Corque

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/corque.png
The Beigoma Professor
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese), Cory English (English)

A physics professor at the University of Carles, who also happens to be the leading expert of beigomas.

  • Expy: He's a parody of the various Pokemon Professors, complete with letting you choose between a fire, leaf or water beigoma.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He's devoted his studies to the physics of beigomas, and strives to create the perfect model.
  • Mad Scientist: He's a pure-hearted man but is undoubtedly eccentric, what with him being obsessed with the elusive, unpredictable movement of beigoma, and seeking out the perfect player to prove his theories, as opposed to conducting more typical scientific endeavours.
  • Single-Issue Wonk: A lot of his dialogue indicates that he wants to the concept of beigoma and beigoma-like spinning into everything regardless of how feasible that would actually be, from telling his eggfoot to spin when it’s lagging behind in a race, to suggesting the incorporation of beigoma when brainstorming ways to keep steam from fogging people's glass while at the hot springs...

Glen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/glen_4.png
Duelist
Voiced by: Taihi Kimura (Japanese), Luke R. Francis (English)

A traveling duelist who plays card games with just about any opponent.

  • Card Battle Game: Glen runs a Yu-Gi-Oh! type card game which the player can join in with at castle HQ.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Upon being defeated in his card game, he joins the Alliance and opens a Card Shop.
  • Death Dealer: Discussed, but ultimately defied. When Glen's first recruited, Nowa offhandedly wonders if the former fights by throwing his cards like shuriken. However, Glen responds as if he finds the idea completely absurd and reiterates that the cards are only for playing the game.
  • Spirited Competitor: He loves to play card games. He also never rubs a victory in his opponents face, and is disappointed, but not bitter, when he loses.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: Like Reid, he's a classic big-haired, earnestly passionate young man, with a design and in-game role that's a clear Shout-Out to Yu-Gi-Oh! and the like.

Stone Lion's Heart
Voiced by: Yuki Urushiyama (Japanese), Leader Looi (English)

A young warrior in a Chinese lion mask seeking strong companions to help improve his strength.

  • Cat Folk: Beneath the mask, as seen in the bathhouse, for instance, Gigina is actually a small black cat. It's unclear if he's a variety of beastyn or some other race.
  • Cool Mask: Gigina sports a huge Chinese lion mask, which mostly conceals his petite form underneath.
  • Glass Cannon: Strong attacks with high critical chance that ignore armor but the low HP and defense are particular drawbacks.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Gigina introduces himself to Nowa as "the mightiest of all beastwarriors", and is suitably impressed enough to join Nowa — a fellow "lion" — when they meet in Arenside.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Under that big mask is a very cute little black cat, and Gigina calls to mind the Nay-Kobold cat people of Suikoden IV.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Anything with pineapple in it.

  • Dressed to Heal: Whilst his outfit fits with the game's fantasy setting, it has overtones of a modern medical lab-coat.
  • Fetch Quest: He wants 15 Healing Herbs to help make a tincture for his patients before he's willing to run off to the Alliance.
  • In the Blood: Falward's family has a knack for healing, and while he initially refused, Falward changed his mind when he healed a pretty girl and she thanked him.
  • Light 'em Up: Has high affinity with light runes, and uses light magic to contrast with Francesca's dark in their unite attack.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Stuffed bell peppers.

  • Early-Bird Cameo: She appeared in Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, also serving as the armorer for New Nevaeh.
  • The Fashionista: A self-described example, though her dress-sense is fairly chaotic, as opposed to stylish, and she sends up the perky Valley Girl archetype. She actually studied fashion design and eventually pivoted towards armor since she wants to make clothing that's both fashionable and practical.
  • No Hero Discount: Unlike Cassandra's Inn, which you can go to for free, you have to pay full price for her goods.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: Considering she thinks of herself as a fashionista, Frida's outfit is a bit of a Too Many Belts hodge-podge, and looks as if she's wearing half her stock.
  • We Buy Anything: She'll buy everything, not just armour.
  • We Sell Everything: She sells armour that is available from any other armour store already visited.

Wyler

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wyler.png
Kindhearted Hunter
Voiced by: Junta Terashima (Japanese), Greg Jones (English)

A capable and pleasant ranger who travels with his little sister Marin.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Wyler adores his younger sister, Marin, and is incredibly protective of her, taking up his bow in her defence whenever required. As Marin has a habit of wandering off to gather herbs and getting herself in trouble in the process, this is a fairly regular occurrence.
  • Expy: As a sweet-natured Forest Ranger who wields a bow in battle, Wyler is Eiyuden's nod to Kinnison from Suikoden II.
  • Long-Range Fighter: As an archer, he fights from the back row and is vulnerable up close.
  • Master Archer: When joining Nowa's squad, he notes that he "never misses his mark". In gameplay, this translate to a deadly (and very rare) level 1 rune-skill, which can kill a standard enemy dead in one hit.
  • Nature Hero: A true-hearted young archer with an indigenous warrior vibe who fights to protect his woodland homeland.

Marin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marin_3.png
Gatherer Girl
Voiced by: Akiha Matsui (Japanese), Hara Yannas (English)

A pleasant young woman with a knack for finding rare plants and a knack for all things herbalism. She travels with her big brother Wyler.

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Marin is a expert herbal remedy gatherer, but is distracted by "shiny" things, meaning that she's prone to wandering off and getting in trouble.
  • Big Brother Worship: Marin adores her very protective older brother, Wyler, insisting he is the best big brother in the world.
  • Damsel in Distress: When first encountered, she's wandered off from her brother Wyler and is being menaced by a Plantvine — until Nowa and his party save the day.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She's dainty, delicate, and the food she makes is delicious.
  • Healing Herb: Her specialty; Marin is an expert medicinal herb gatherer.
  • Nature Hero: Her weapon of choice is special herbs that cause damage.

Kerrin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kerrin_6.png
Full Force Lumberjack
Voiced by: Michiko Kaiden (Japanese), Stacy Sobieski (English)

A mighty woodswoman who lives in the Dappled Forest and will agree to join the Alliance should Nowa bring her some lumber.

  • Amazonian Beauty: Kerrin is absolutely ripped, and one of the buffest women in the game (if not the buffest), though she still sports a pretty feminine face and a brief outfit that shows off her figure. Despite this she's not a warrior and is recruited solely to be a lumberjack.
  • Fetch Quest: A very easily-accomplished one at that, as the 20 piles of lumber she requests Nowa gather to prove his strength before she’ll join are scattered a short jog from her cabin.
  • Mighty Lumberjack: Kerrin is a buff woodswoman, and uses her huge axe to help with HQ building projects.

Ormond

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ormond.png
Miserly Miner
Voiced by: Masaki Nakanishi (Japanese), Andres Williams (English)

  • Fetch Quest: He'll only join Nowa's party if he's brought 3 samples of iron ore as proof of good faith.
  • Our Dwarves Are All the Same: He's about as archetypal a dwarf as it gets; big bushy beard, gruff tone, encountered in a mine, and wielding a big pickaxe.

Galdorf

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/galdorf.png
Young Dwarf Soldier
Voiced by: Takuya Abe (Japanese), Greg Jones (English)

  • Fetch Quest: He joins the Alliance if Nowa brings him a set of Palenight Armour.
  • Our Dwarves Are All the Same: Like Ormond, he's a classic Tolkien-style dwarf, albeit a bit more battle-ready than his dwarven comrade. Like classic fantasy series dwarves, he's also terrible with magic, and has a 'bad' affinity with all elements, especially water.

Hiro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiro_65.png
Free-Range Merchant
Voiced by: Yoji Ueda (Japanese), Kyle Omori (English)

A wandering merchant found in the Abandoned Mines, who sets up shop with Nowa's army on a whim once asked.

  • Coat Full of Contraband: Invoked in the way he opens his cape to show his wares, but his items are all legitimate.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: On initial inspection, Hiro appears dodgy and shady, what with him being encountered deep in an abandoned mine, his slightly unsettling expression, and the fact he offers goods stashed inside his cloak like a stolen watch dealer. However, he’s a legitimate trader and far nicer than appearances alone suggest.
  • We Buy Anything: He opens an item store at HQ, once recruited.
  • We Sell Everything: His store carries any item that has been found available in any other item store already visited by Nowa.

Maureus

A supposed mage who has vastly misunderstood the meaning of the word, instead devoting his "magic" to his muscles.

  • The Ahnold: Between the strong resemblance physically, the intense focus on building his muscles, and an overly exaggerated Austrian accent, Maureus pretty clearly is a reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger (with his intelligence about twenty notches lower).
  • Carry a Big Stick: It might look magical, but considering who it is who's wielding it, it would create more fire as kindling. Its true use is as a bludgeon that Maureus can use to beat the tar out of his enemies with.
  • Dumb Muscle: The man is about as sharp as a sphere, and has a limited understanding about much beyond physical training.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Back when he was a child, he was saved by Momo which led to him wanting to become a mage.
  • Inept Mage: Played with in his backstory, where it's stated that while he has no talent with conventional magic, he is skilled in body enhancement magic which led to him equating brute strength with magical power.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Played for Laughs. Despite claiming to be a mage and requiring a party member with a sufficiently high MP stat to recruit, he has an absolutely pitiful magic stat, rock bottom compatibility with all magic runes, and he firmly believes in training his MP (which stands for "Muscle Points.") What he does bring to the table, however, is an immense physical attack. Despite this, he does have Hero Combos with other actual mages such as Momo, Mellore and Gieran.

    Kyshiri Village

Leene

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leene.png
Luckiest Girl Alive
Voiced by: Hikaru Akao (Japanese), Sam Slade (English)

Nowa's younger sister, who often travels wherever the call of the runes lead her.

  • Battle Bolas: Her weapon is a long range bola.
  • Born Lucky: She has the highest Luck stat in the game, and in-story she’s constantly getting into scrapes and miraculously surviving unscathed.
  • 100% Completion: Only joins your party if you have all 119 of the other recruitable characters.
  • Arrow Catch: Takes out a poisoned arrow courtesy of Hurstwine if she shows up.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Temporarily joins Marisa's group for one part of the game, but she can join permanently later.
  • In the Blood: She likes exploring Runebarrows because that's what her mother liked to do.
  • Lady Luck: Considers herself to be the luckiest girl alive. It's hard to argue otherwise. Her Luck stat is also the highest in the game. According to B'baba, Kyshiri Festival would always hold festivals with two top prizes, because Leene would be counted on to win every time.
  • Spanner in the Works: She is this for Hurstwine and Nurengard, as she steals the Dendriach's rune and floats away on some of the Proving Ground's helicopter elevators. Only Leene would be lucky enough to pull off that sort of stunt.

Martha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/martha_03.png
Old Chatterbox
Voiced by: Toru Nakatani (Japanese), Claire Wyatt (English)

Nowa and Leene's parental figure, who helped raise them after their father's passing. She runs a pasturage and manages animal products such as milk and eggs.

  • Cool Aunt: Is the loving Parental Substitute to Nowa and Leene.
  • Gossipy Hens: She's known for not shutting up once she gets going; her sobriquet is "Old Chatterbox".
  • So Proud of You: She says as much when she comes to Nowa's castle HQ, being very impressed with what he's done and joining him on the spot to help him out.
  • There's No Place Like Home: She's eager to help out Nowa, but as the war runs on, her thoughts move back to Kyshiri and she's hoping Nowa will return with her so they might rebuild it.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Omelets.

    The Nation of Euchrisse

Euma Siarith

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Japanese), Jacqui Bardelang (English)

The King of Euchrisse based out of the capital Hishahn, Euma is an indecisive man and has been for most of his life.

  • The Ditherer: He's notorious (according to Perrielle) for being unable to determine a best course by himself.
  • Eyes Always Shut: His eyes are always closed save for moments of shock.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: He's a kind yet indecisive young man who very recently ascended to the throne and thus is seen as a failure by many others. Part of it is because he's constantly comparing himself to his own father, a ruler who's had decades of experience.
  • Loophole Abuse: He does this to himself: he knows that he's not experienced enough to lead a nation through a time of war, so he temporarily hands total command of the nation and crown authority to Kassius (a trusted and skilled general) and Melridge (an equally trusted tactician) to see the country through. This not only helps Euchrisse survive Galdea's attack, but he also learns from it.
  • Odd Friendship: Despite Perrielle claiming that she and Euma aren't actually friends, she does have a particular soft spot for him and is rather patient with him.
  • Rain of Arrows: His ability as a Support Character is to get archers to rain down arrows on the enemies as a pre-emptive attack.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He grows from a spineless (but well-meaning) ditherer to a braver young man throughout the course of the game. By the end, he's actively joining the party (albeit, in a support role).

Kassius

The veteran general of Euchrisse's military, who has served the royal family for decades and is famed around Allraan for his leadership.

  • A Father to His Men: His background states that he's largely beloved by the army due to him caring deeply about the soldiers under his command.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Steak topped with egg.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's deeply loyal to the royal family of Euchrisse and is Euma's biggest supporter.

Melridge

Voiced by: Yohei Azakami (Japanese), Brent Mukai (English)

A well-read and educated military strategist consulted by Kassius, Melridge has a keen mind for tactics and is utterly ruthless in his pursuits. He later joins on as the Alliance's strategist.

  • Art Attacker: He can create functional magic attacks by drawing calligraphy, and his weapon is actually an oversized paintbrush to boot. He can also draw kanji to create powerful attacks, including a dragon.
  • Batman Gambit: He executes plans that rely on the weaknesses of his enemy, including tricking the Dragonnewt King by using Perielle as a feint, despite the real risk it brought to her life.
  • Minored in Ass-Kicking: While his specialty is in the academic sector, he's more than skilled with magic and takes to battle quite easily.
  • Playing with Fire: He specializes in Fire magic.
  • Pragmatic Hero: One of the reasons he's helping the war is because he won't get any funding for his university if the Imperials win.
  • The Strategist: He is a masterful war strategist.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Duck soup.

Harlan

A sleazy advisor to Euma of Euchrisse, who has been trying to convince him that capitulating to the might of the Galdean Empire is the correct course of action.

  • Evil Chancellor: He's attempting to get Euma to surrender to Galdea by playing on his insecurities.
  • Fat Bastard: He's a rather heavyset fellow, and is perfectly willing to sell out Euma to Galdea in exchange for power.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: During his Motive Rant he is completly accurate about how Euma's inability to stop being The Ditherer would result in the Dux taking over the Kingdom forcibly, ending with a result worse than fighting against him or surrendering.
  • The Quisling: He's been making backroom deals with Dux Aldric in which he'll facilitate the surrender of Euchrisse in exchange for maintaining his position of power.

Barnard Sawad

A mercenary contracted by Euchrisse with his company to help defend Hishahn from the Empire, who's famed for his loyalty and tenacity.

  • Genius Bruiser: He's a hired sword and quite talented with one, but he also is a font of knowledge about the shi'arcs, and is quick to educate Nowa that not everyone fights for the same reason.
  • I Gave My Word: Why they went with his mercenary company over anyone else. Once hired the Sawad do not reign on a contract.
  • Only in It for the Money: The Sawad were paid and that is all he needs. However, he knows better than to go back on a contract, as a merc's word is literally all they have.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Spiced coffee.

Yulin

Voiced by: Hirona Yajima (Japanese), Nicole Gose (English)

King Euma's personal handmaiden, who is often a voice of encouragement to the young man when he doubts his ability.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Commandeers a fleet of shi'arcs to get the retreating Nowa and Euma from Twinhorn West out after Kenan destroys the boats.
  • Experience Booster: Her support ability doubles the XP you earn.
  • Undying Loyalty: She's extremely loyal to Euma due to personally witnessing his kind nature and is very quick to speak up for him.

Hakugin

Voiced by: Nozomi Mikajiri (Japanese), Leader Looi (English)

A ninja waiting around in Twinhorne East for her rival Mio.

  • Blood Knight: According to Mio, Hakugin has nearly killed her during sparring sessions before because she just gets that into the whole fight.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Mio; she even tries to drag Mio to go grab some snacks with her at one point.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Very fast, and can put a hurting on enemies.
  • Ninja: In contrast to Mio, she's a ninja who fights with throwing knives.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: With Mio. It's less belligerent than most, and Mio does speak highly of Hakugin.
  • Worthy Opponent: Considers Mio this, as she refuses to spar with Nowa (or anyone else who isn't Mio).

Riufan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/riufan.png
Elder Spear-Wielder
Voiced by: Kiyomitsu Mizuuchi (Japanese), Brent Mukai (English)

A famous spear-fighter who spends his retirement lazing about and drinking. Nowa convinces him to give fighting a go again by besting him in a duel.

  • Defeat Equals Friendship: He'll only join if Nowa beats him in a duel.
  • Duel Boss: The fight to recruit him is a one-on-one fight with him and Nowa.
  • Functional Addict: He loves his booze, make no mistake, but he's still a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
  • My Kung-Fu Is Stronger Than Yours: If Nowa is below level 30 when he approaches Riufan to join the Alliance, he scoffs that such a "weakling" would even dare ask. If Nowa is level 30 and over, Riufan is much more respectful, and challenges him to a one-on-one fight.
  • Old Master: A masterful spearman who's still sprightly at 77 years-old.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Spring rolls.

Lam

Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu (Japanese), Claire Wyatt (English)

A long-time friend and rival of Riufan, she is coaxed into joining the war effort by him, proving just as capable as she was when she was in her prime (mainly by transforming into herself at her prime).

  • Dual Age Modes: She can temporarily transform herself into her younger form which gives her a considerable power boost.
  • Old Master: While she's got skills that can make her look younger and increase her power, she is old and she does feel it.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mee Siam (rice noodles that can be served hot, sweet, or sour).

Huang

Voiced by: Genta Nakamura (Japanese), Todd Haberkorn (English)

A laid-back fisherman in Hishahn, he offers to open a fishing hatchery in Nowa's castle if Nowa can prove his own good fortune by snagging a very rare fish.

  • Fetch Quest: To prove his worth, Huang requests that Nowa catches a wheel-eyed bream with the bamboo rod he gifts him. This is no easy task, as said fish appears rarely, and only in one fishing spot tucked away near the Seaside Cavern outside of Hishahn.
  • Fishing Minigame: He'll give Nowa a pole to start off, and he runs the fishing game at the Alliance HQ once recruited, with upgrades to the game allowing for the catching of more fish.
  • Secretly Wealthy: He's actually the scion of a wealthy merchant house, but after watching the money cause his brothers to feud, he gave it up and enjoyed a simpler life.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Miso soup with clams.

Aire

A fitness trainer in Hishahn who offers to join the Alliance if Nowa can beat her in a race.

  • Boring, but Practical: Her special ability simply allows Nowa to move faster, which will save you a lot of time.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: She'll join the team if Nowa can beat her in a race, which simply means that his speed stat has to be up to a certain threshold.
  • Sprint Shoes: Her support ability doubles Nowa's movement speed on the field.
  • Weight Woe: Not Aire herself, but many of the women in the Alliance seek her out to help train them so they might lose weight.

Code L

Voiced by: Shuta Morishima (Japanese), Lewys Taylor (English)

A researcher of Runes who can be recruited to run the Rune Shop at the town.

  • This Is Gonna Suck: Code L knows a lot about how dangerous runes can be. When a rune spontaneously manifests in a dragon, he's quite panicked.
  • Work Hard, Play Hard: Code L worked diligently to get his thesis accepted by the University in Carles. After it did, he went on a bender for three straight days.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mint chocolate chip ice cream.

B'baba

Voiced by: Harumi Asai (Japanese), Helen Keely (English)

A famed fortune-teller who is both able to divine those with important destinies and the motivations of those around her.

  • Blind Seer: Can see the past, and can determine a person's current location and secrets; blindness is implied due to her eyes always being covered.
  • The Comically Serious: While her seriousness is normally played straight, with her calm and composed demeanor, her divination veers into this territory with a dramatic incantation of "Zippadalips... Opahdamind... SHABLOOEY!"
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: When Nowa asks if B'baba can do this, she refutes it: She sees the past, not the future. However, seeing the past can help one predict the future.
  • Expy: Of Leknaat from the Suikoden series. Both are seers, Leknaat is blind while B'baba is implied to be blind, and both wear long, white robes. Differences include Leknaat being more serious, and B'baba being The Comically Serious, as well as Leknaat being a non-recruitable yet plot-important character, while B'baba is an optional recruit.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Her eyes are always covered by a small veil.

Pastole

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pastole.png
Love-Trapping Hunter
Voiced by: Chiharu Shigematsu (Japanese), Greg Jones (English)

A narcissistic animal trapper who runs a hunter's cabin that can be used to trap animals for pelts and their meat.

  • Camp Straight: He comes off as incredibly effeminate, speaking in an affected, flutey tone, and is flirty with Nowa, but his background describes him as a womanizer.
  • The Charmer: Women are charmed by his sweet words, and more than one noblewoman wanted to run away with him. It's lead to various troubles for him when their fathers (or husbands) find out.
  • Impractically Fancy Outfit: Pastole sports a spray-on unitard in lime green that looks more suitable for figure-skating than the gory business of trapping and skinning animals.
  • In Love with Love: Pastole is incredibly amorous and something of a womanizer.
  • It's All About Me: He’s a hammy, self-obsessed show-off, and is boastful about both his appearance and skills as a trapper, though he’s not at all a bad guy, just very eccentric.
  • Large Ham: Good god, is he ever. He's extremely dramatic, loud, and flamboyant, and he knows it and loves it.
  • Narcissist: Pastole is a fun nod to the classic foppish narcissists (Vincent, Simone, Reinbach etc) who appear in every Suikoden game, and just like them he’s eccentric, amorous, friendly, very arrogant, and completely self-obsessed. Unlike them, however, he isn’t The Fighting Narcissist available for the active party, but instead plays a supporting role as the HQ trapper.
  • Old-School Chivalry: He's very protective of women. When a woman he knew was down on herself, he recited poetry describing her qualities to lift her spirits.
  • Something about a Rose: In his artwork, he wields one of his thorny traps, complete with a rose motif.
  • Stereotype Flip: It's undoubtedly a surprise when foppish, effeminate Pastole reveals that he's an expert animal trapper, a stereotypically macho profession that completely defies his appearance and personality.
  • Trap Master: He's a huntsman who solely uses traps to catch his prey and disdains any other weapons since he considers them too messy.

Mariette

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mariette_2.png
Quiet Bookworm
Voiced by: Suzuka Toriyabe (Japanese), Hara Yannas (English)

A quiet, bookish young woman who opens up a library at the castle HQ.

  • Bookworm: A self-confessed bookaholic, Mariette loves nothing better than cosying up for the evening with her favourite books.
  • Encyclopedia Exposita: Her library contains a series of tombs detailing a variety of subjects; the Enemy Encyclopedia, Fish Encyclopedia, and Faded Books. The Enemy Encyclopedia lists normal enemies and bosses defeated, allowing the player to check weaknesses and dropped items. The Fish Encyclopedia lists fish previously caught. The contents of the Faded Books vary, but mostly detail history of the Eiyuden world and fun/useful trivia. Faded Books can be obtained from specific (usually NPC) characters, or when investigating treasure chests.
  • Fetch Quest: An Rabbit Archwitch had stolen Mariette's sentimental charm bracelet, and once Nowa recovers it, she joins his team as castle librarian.

Carrie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carrie_4.png
Teleporter Chaos Girl
Voiced by: Shiori Izawa (Japanese), Penelope Rawlins (English)

A (supposedly) perfect "teleportation professional," who Nowa spots aimlessly teleporting around in Hishahn during his diplomatic mission with Euma.

  • Ditzy Genius: She is genuinely a good mage... with a propensity for flubbing her teleportation spells and still feigning perfection despite it.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: Carrie sports a slightly stern, confused expression, which is enhanced by her heavy blonde fringe.
  • Expy: Of Viki, the recurring teleporting mage from the Suikoden series. She's also a klutzy mage with a tendency to flub her teleportation spells, and serves the same function in your army as Viki does in the Suikoden games.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Carrie has issues with the precision of her teleportation, and whenever her skills are needed during the story, she makes many unintended detours to dangerous places off-screen before the party reaches their intended destination. Thankfully, this doesn't happen when you're using her teleportation for warping around the world during actual gameplay.
  • Hidden Depths: Though initially played off as gag about her not being certain about where the Marisa's party needs to go and the implied teleportation flubs that come with it, Carrie names Castle Harganthia by its former name of Hardisguarth, which Markus reveals via monologue in astonishment, as he wonders how she could have possibly known, implying that she may have some connection to the distant past, long before she should have been born.
  • Implausible Deniability: Insists that she's absolutely perfect and has never messed up her teleportation, ever, even after Nowa saw her teleport several feet into the air and fall on her face, right in front of him, three times.
  • The Klutz: Fumbles with her teleportation at times; part of her recruitment process involves Nowa seeing her teleporting around, materializing several feet in the air, and falling on her face.
  • Meaningful Name: Her job is to carry people around via teleportation.
  • The Perfectionist: Carrie holds herself to very high standards, and is of course perfect in every way, which she often reminds Nowa in deadpan, vaguely threatening tones.
  • Required Party Member: Despite her appearing to be an optional party member for your army, it turns out that she's mandatory for the quest in Old Hishahn (and for some story events later), meaning that in the end, you have to recruit her.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Carrie has a comically deluded (but charming) sense of self-worth, and is definitely the best at teleportation, and has absolutely never fallen down — ever.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: She would like you to know that she has never failed at teleportation. Not once. As for her introduction when she literally failed at teleportation three times in a row, don't believe your lying eyes.
  • Teleportation: She specializes in teleportation magic, though the first few times you meet her she's prone to teleporting a meter in the air above her location, causing her to fall down. As well as being on hand to teleport Nowa and his team to any location on the map, in battle her "Take That!" rune-lens attack drops randomly teleported objects onto the enemy's head.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Shrimp Doria.
  • Warp Whistle: Recruiting her allows you to warp between all the locations you've visited, saving you a lot of time on backtracking.

Nell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nell_8.png
This Bag Is Everything

Voiced by: Hrumi Asai (Japanese), Fran Burgoyne (English)

A strange figure who prefers to live his entire life inside a giant bag, but is willing to help out Nowa with inventory space.

  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: The only thing that can be seen of him is his eyes peeping out from the darkness of the bag.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: Well, Clark Kent "Bag" to be precise. Worried about his muscles atrophying staying in the bag constantly, Nell had picked up a workout manual and has used to the point he's apparently claimed to be ripped.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: Nell wants to succeed in the stowpack business because the one girl he did want to attract ended up marrying a successful stowpack merchant. He wanted to thus surpass him, but has since grown to admire the bags themselves.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: The reason he started hiding in the bag to begin with. Apparently he is so attractive that girls would constantly chase him.

Kurtz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kurtz.png
Cool, Competent Chef

Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa (Japanese), Vincent Lai (English)

A chef with a dark history, who is searching for a recipe famed in the Treefolk Village.

  • Cooking Duel: Has an entire sidequest is devoted to an increasingly challenging series of cook-offs with rival chefs.
  • Deuteragonist: He's the central focus of the cooking challenge questline, which focuses on him dealing with the Dark Dragon Syndicate, a group of evil chefs.
  • Expy: Of Hai Yo from Suikoden II. Both are not only the Team Chef for their respective armies, but both of them have a cooking duel sidequest that finds them eventually facing off against an evil syndicate of chefs, with similar names to boot (Kurtz faces the Dark Dragon Syndicate, while Hai Yo faces the Black Dragon Clan). Furthermore, both of them are linked to a woman who is recruitable (Kurtz's wife, Celia; and Hai Yo's lover Shun Min, who doesn't appear in Suikoden II, but is recruitable in Suikoden V). Primary differences are that Hai Yo is usable in battle while Kurtz can only be used as a support character, and Kurtz's wife is alive and well and will join the team over the course of the sidequest, while Shun Min was killed by the Black Dragon Clan before Suikoden II took place.
  • Fetch Quest: He's hunting for a specific grilled tutuva recipe, which can be found (unobviously) with one of the tree-folk in their village, and joins up once this is delivered to him.
  • Random Effect Spell: His Support Ability has him cooking up random dishes for each party member, giving them the buffs associated with said dishes.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Kurtz is amongst the tallest of the human sprites (with his chef's hat adding a good few more inches), he sports a tousled mop of shiny black hair, and is handsome in a brooding, stoic way.
  • Team Chef: He's the Alliance's official chef and can whip up a variety of health and buff-benefiting recipes.

Dalton

A former soldier who left the life. Upon hearing Sabine is working with the Alliance, Dalton asks to sign on to work for Gocteau's guild

  • Amicable Exes: He's Sabine's ex-husband, with the two splitting up due to Sabine not willing to give up her mercenary career. Despite this the two are still on decent terms and Dalton still has hopes of getting back together.
  • Artificial Limbs: He's got a peg leg for a right foot.
  • Old Soldier: He's retired now, but he's an elder mercenary who lived years in the life.
  • Scars Are Forever: Dalton is beaten up all over.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Onion soup.

Trusty Guardian Leader
Voiced by: Katsuya Fukunishi (Japanese), Charlie Wes (English)

Marisa's direct superior within the Guardians, he was the one who found her and brought her to Yarnaan

  • The Leader: A tough, but warm-hearted Guardian who leads his own command. Marisa and the rest of the team trust him implicitly, as he leads by example.
  • Parental Substitute: Wayve is more of an uncle figure than a father to Marisa, but the pair interact like family, even if not related by blood.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Caramel bars.

Allaby

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/allaby.png
Daddy's Girl
Voiced by: Hirona Yajima (Japanese), Rhiannon Moushall (English)

  • Daddy's Girl: Garoo dotes on her, and she worships the ground he hops on in return.
  • Kangaroos Represent Australia: Well, a wallaby, but close enough. Her father's a kangaroo, they both have Australian accents, and just like her father, she has a pouch on her dress right around where kangaroos and wallabies have theirs.
  • The Pollyanna: She's sunny, upbeat and positive, loving her father and Wayve more than anything. She even wants to compose a song for Viesskin.
  • Punny Name: As you might guess, she's a wallaby (whose father is a kangaroo named "Garoo").

Lakian Arkathies Fawud

Head of the Elves Council, Lakian is a well-respected elven ruler who joins forces with the Alliance.

  • The Ace: Lakian is consdered among his people to be a cunning diplomat, shrewd leader, excellent archer, and deeply caring soul.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Green salads.

    The Greatwood

Kallathor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kallathor_8.png
Treefolk Boy
Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi (Japanese), Lewys Taylor (English)

A treefolk boy who implores Nowa and the Alliance to come to the defense of the town and its local Runebarrows, the Proving Grounds.

  • The Chosen One: It's heavily implied that he will eventually become the new chieftain of the Treefolk Village in the future.
  • Cowardly Lion: He's nervous about his involvement with saving the Proving Grounds, but he gains confidence as time goes on, becoming a brave warrior in the process.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Not only is he literally a tree, he also has an Earth-elemental special attack.
  • Plant Person: As with all treefolk, he is a sentient tree person.
  • Use Your Head: He attacks by goring the enemy with his rather sharp head at full speed.
  • When Trees Attack: A cute little tree-boy whose appearance belies his skill in battle against the monsters he and Nowa face while traveling to (and through) the Proving Grounds.

Gieran

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gieran.png
Traveling Mage
Voiced by: Takaya Kyosato (Japanese), Andres Williams (English)

A mage who is studying the art of conservation in order to more efficiently cast spells. He can join up with Nowa when they find the rune he is seeking, in the claws of a dangerous beast within the Greatwood.

  • Fetch Quest: To join Nowa's forces, Gieran requests that Nowa bring to him the 'Rune of Conservation', which is dropped when the Ancient Seed boss is defeated.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: In the lore, Gieran had lower reserves when it came to magic than his peers. Indeed, Gieran's MP is in fact lower than most mages. However, his rune of conversation allows his spells to cost less, offsetting this.
  • Reduced Mana Cost: His unique Rune gives him a 20% reduced mana cost to casting spells.
  • Sweet Tooth: Reportedly fond of sweets, as he believes cake helps his brain function.
  • Utility Belt: Gieran sports a large belt with several pockets, within which he stores vials of spells.

Squash

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/squash_21.png
An Eye For Glitter
Voiced by: Go Shinomiya (Japanese), Neil Roberts (English)

An Ornith accessory salesman with a fondness for shiny objects. Will join Nowa if he receives the Sparklestone, carried by monsters in the depths of the Dappled Woods.

  • Bird People: He hails from the Ornith race.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: No pun intended, but he appears in Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, running an accessory shop in New Nevaeh.
  • Everything's Sparkly with Jewelry: While he does claim to have an eye for appraising an item's worth, he absolutely adores things that glitter, shine, and sparkle, leading those who know him to wonder if those are his main (or even sole) criteria for deeming an item valuable.
  • Fetch Quest: Squash will join you if you bring him the Sparklestone, a shiny item with a random chance of dropping from two enemies in the Dappled Woods.
  • Fluffy Fashion Feathers: It's not quite clear if they're his own feathers or not, but he does have a rather fashionable-looking plume of them around his neck, above his Regal Ruff.
  • Furry Reminder: He'll periodically squawk in his dialogue.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: Is very polite, pleasant, and cultured, with a keen eye for beautiful jewels and treasures.
  • High-Class Glass: Sports a monocle over one eye, and is quite well-dressed and well-spoken.
  • Luck-Based Mission: His recruitment quest requires you to fetch an item for him with a fairly low chance of dropping at the end of a battle.
  • Regal Ruff: Wears a rather frilly one about his neck, and has a rather classy, gentlemanly air about him.

    Impershi'arc

Tropes applying to the shi'arcs

  • Heritage Disconnect: The race of sharks hate water and loves the desert. Many of them don't even believe the water exists. Their myth says they once came from something called either Ochee or Shosen*, they don't remember themselves.
  • Land Shark: They're a race of talking sharks who live in the desert and have a cultural hatred of water.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: In such a degree that they actually thank Nowa for the opportunity to fight when he tries to recruit them.
  • Shark Man: Played straight, except the fact they hate water.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Most of the Shi'arcs all talk in both pirate lingo as well as the accent.

Skyd

The jolly old Shoalmaester of the shi'arcs who doesn't take much convincing by Nowa to join in the Alliance cause.

  • Boisterous Bruiser: Skyd is a fighter, and he fights quite happily. He's quite the boaster and lives for combat.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's an elderly shi'arc, but like all members of his race, he lives for the fight and throws his support behind Nowa with very minimal prompting.

Yuferius VII

Nowa's coach who can teach him how to pilot a sand ship. He's also the strongest warrior in Imperishi'arc and lives for a good fight.

  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's all in for a good brawl or a life and death race on the dunes. He and Skyd even once got in a duel of boasts.

Scarlet

A ferrywoman that sails chartered passengers between Dabavan and Impershi'arc on her ship, the Europhe, she lives for thrill of racing ships and will join up with Nowa if bested in one of those races.

  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, the duel between her and Sawad was a thing of crazy beauty.

Reyna

A dark knight with a troubled history behind her, she offers to join Nowa if he can best her considerable defenses in a duel.

  • Black Knight: Her appearance evokes this. However, in gameplay, she's more akin to The Paladin.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She's got a dark history with a foreign land's royal family, which is a bit of a sensitive subject for her.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She wears black armour, but is unambiguously heroic.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: She requests that Nowa try to break through her shield and prove himself to her before she'll sign on with his army. Specifically, you have to deal a certain amount of damage to her under three turns*.
  • Draw Aggro: Her unique skill forces enemies to attack her, after which she counters them.
  • The Exile: She was exiled from her homeland.
  • Four-Star Badass: She's notably the only optional character who serves as a commander alongside other more plot-significant characters like Nowa, Seign or Melridge during war sequences rather than just as a unit leader.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: She can use magic runes, however she only has space for a single Tier-2 magic rune so her options are extremely limited. Furthermore, her elemental compatibilities are terrible across the board, with the sole exceptions being Earth and Plain (i.e. non-elemental) magic.
  • The Paladin: Despite being a dark knight by title, she can function as a paladin due to her excellent tanking ability and her compatibility with defensive Earth magic.
  • Stone Wall: Her defense is absolutely through the roof, and in fact, Nowa has to prove that he can beat said defense to convince her that he's worth fighting for.
  • Third-Person Person: She's fond of referring to herself as "The Reyna" in battle.

Quinn

A studious treasure hunter with a friendly rivalry against Djikstra, she recruits Nowa to escort her while she traverses a sand dune rumoured to have treasures buried within.

  • Friendly Rivalry: With Djikstra. The two will trade barbs over who found a good lead first, but Quinn's the first to admit that if Djikstra thinks something is too much, then she needs to be on her guard, since he's a tough guy and wouldn't be scared off.
  • Tome of Eldritch Lore: She seeks a powerful tome known as the Golden Grimoire, which is rumored to document the locations of various rune lenses.

Djikstra

A Steeryn treasure hunter and friend of Quinn, he lives for the next potential find and is always searching for new leads.

  • Early-Bird Cameo: He shows up during Quinn's recruitment sidequest but won't be recruitable himself until far later.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He is an avid consumer of knowledge regarding rune lenses, and when he found that both Pohl and Code L were members of the Alliance, he was overjoyed and rushed to meet then.
  • Status Buff: His unique command allows him to buff the attack of the party.
  • Third-Person Person: He's really fond of referring to himself in the third person.

Cabana

A capybara beastyn who, with his son, wishes to spread his love of hot spring baths around the world. When Nowa offers for them to move into the Alliance Castle and build a bath, they readily agree.

Prunella

Voiced by: Rinko Hayashi (Japanese), Jess Nesling (English)

  • Gadgeteer Genius: She comes up with some incredible inventions, most notably Quinn's rocket-hammer.
  • Hired Guns: She's a mercenary for hire and demands 100,000 Baqua up front. Upon paying it however, she'll admit that she deliberately overcharged as a way of testing out clients and refund you half of it.

    Kenan

In General

  • Draconic Humanoid: The country is populated by Dragon people.
  • Flat Character: Due to the very last minute defection of Vorrdice and Viesskin to the Alliance, they're not given much in the way of plot importance or characterization. Nowa doesn't even visit Kenani territory during the game.

Valmaurice

The King of the Kenani.

  • Cavalry Betrayal: During the Battle for Norristar, he arrives as reinforcements only to command his army to attack General Elektra.
  • Face–Heel Turn: He's turned his back on the League of Nations, having decided that the Dux would make for a better ally.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: His Cavalry Betrayal comes to back to bite him in the penultimate battle when his general, Vorrdice, decides to renouce his oath as kingsworn and fight for the Alliance.
  • Stupid Evil: He completely buys Perrielle's fake defection at face value, which is stupid enough on its own. But then during the following battle he mocks her ideal of honor to his more noble general's face, which is the final straw for Vorrdice and convinces him to defect. There's also the fact that he chose to ally himself with a faction known for Fantastic Racism.
  • The Unfought: After Vorrdice betrays Valmaurice, the white dragon disappears and is not fought at any point.

Vorrdice

The General of the Kenani and the second-in-command of Valmaurice.

  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Despite being horrified by his king's betrayal of the League, he's kingsworn and reluctantly follows his orders. Eventually, Melridge and Perrielle manage to secretly convince him to defect, upon which he renounces his oath.
  • The Oathbreaker: During the Battle for the Alliance HQ he decides to renounce his oath to his king, having grown sick of his king's blatant powerlust and treachery.

Viesskin

A renowned soldier of the Kenani, he was born with one horn and became a master duelist.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Being born with a single horn meant that he was the target of scorn among his people, causing him to develop a chip on his shoulder.
  • Named After the Injury: More a birth defect than an injury, but Viesskin's title is the One-Horned General, after the fact that his right horn never fully grew in.

    Galdean Empire

In General

  • The Empire: Galdea represents one of the growing powers on the continent of Allraan, and true to form, their modus operandi is territorial expansion — usually by force.
  • Evil Brit: Some of the Galdean have RP English accents, though not all of them are evil.
  • Fantastic Racism: According to Seign and Hildi, discrimination against non-humans is unfortunately not uncommon among Galdeans.

Dux Aldric

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dux.png
Voiced by: Joji Nakata (Japanese), Andrew James Spooner (English)

A renowned general of the Galdean army with an obsession with the Rune Lenses, he wages a war of conquest on the League of Nations.

  • Big Bad: He's the central antagonist of the game.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The beginning scene with all of the Allraanian leaders together has him present himself as a firm but friendly sort who wants to work towards a compromise. As things progress, he quickly reveals his true nature as a mass murderer and bloody conqueror.
  • Bling of War: He's decked out in shining armor with gold trimmings and a voluminous ermine cloak.
  • Blue Blood: 'Dux' is his noble title, and is Latin for 'Duke' — typically the highest non-royal rank in European peerages.
  • Evil Counterpart: He's as much of a Magnetic Hero (minus the hero) as Nowa, though other than Heinrich all of his loyal followers are self-serving villains and cowards just looking out for themselves and trying to claim a piece of the world they think Aldric will build.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was born without the ability to use magic, which motivated him to research how to let normal folks empower themselves. Unfortunately, the only answer he finds is "sacrifice natural born rune bearers," and rather than leave it there, he proceeds to become a mass murderer.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He claims that his research on lenses will create a better future for mankind but as Nowa, Seign, and Marisa point out, he does nothing but creating deadly weapons and making violent invasions with the powers he gained from lens.
  • Obviously Evil: Pretty much everyone who is not his followers recognizes him as the vicious tyrant driven by ambition.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: The Dux is not stupid. He knows that executing Perrielle in Grum will just cause her to be a martyr so he lets her leave.
  • Pet the Dog: A couple instances show that despite being monstrous, he's not completely so:
    • He willingly lets Perrielle, Sabine, and Janquis leave Eltisweiss without a fuss, when he could have just as easily held them or killed them.
    • When Heinrich gives himself up as a diversion to allow Aldric to escape, Aldric takes a moment to sincerely and solemnly thank his knight for his service, a fact that Heinrich equally appreciates.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Has one of them in the beginning at the conference right after the expedition is completed.
  • The Usurper: After the assassination of the Emperor he proceeds to take power over the Empire. While his involvement in it is suspected by many, it's only at the end where evidence is discovered that he was the one who had the Emperor assassinated and the Crown Prince sequestered.
  • Worthy Opponent: He genuinely respects the guile and pluck that Perrielle serves him, and even in their final confrontation, he acknowledges her as being Wise Beyond Their Years.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Not only children, whole villages for his research on Rune lenses and making monsters out of them

Chapell Winlart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chappell.png
Voiced by: Takaya Kiyosato (Japanese), Tyler Collins (English)

An opportunistic Imperial general, Chappell is quick to suck up to the dux in a bid for power. He leads the first assault against Perrielle's forces in Elterweiss.

  • Defiant to the End: He refuses to concede to the Alliance. He dies in battle trying to keep Eltisweiss in Imperial hands.
  • Egopolis: When Hishahn is captured, he renames the town after himself.
  • Hate Sink: Cowardly, pompous, self-serving, and whiny - it's pretty clear that he's not a character who's not meant to be liked.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Decide not to send reinforcements to the East gate to support Seign when Eltriweiss falls at the start of the game, making it possible for Nowa and his entourage to escape and start the Alliance army.
  • Shock and Awe: He bears the Rune of Tempest, which allows for powerful lightning spells.

Craigh Kesling

The head of House Kesling, and the father of Seign.

  • Good Parents: He loves Seign and does whatever he can to help him and the Alliance as a shadow saboteur to Aldric.
"As the head of House Kesling, I do not condone your actions. (beat) But as your father, I couldn't be more proud."

General Goldwyn

Voiced by: Shiro Go (Japanese), Barry Aid (English)

An elderly general who has the loyalty and respect of his men, General Goldwyn serves the Emperor and his young son. He and the dux have little love for each other, as he often thinks the dux acts as if he is the emperor.

  • Four-Star Badass: He's stated to be the Empire's most accomplished General.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: He fights in the war for the sake of his nation and makes it clear that he has no personal love for the Dux. Upon given concrete evidence that the Dux was behind the assassination of the Emperor and a letter from the sequestered Crown Prince to put the Dux to the sword, he's given all the incentive he needs to openly oppose him.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's a deeply noble man whose loyalties lie solely with the Emperor rather than Aldric. It's also one of the reasons Aldric had him sent out far from the capital since he'd be the biggest opponent to a coup. After obtaining evidence of Aldrics' hand in the emperors' assassination and his subsequent treatment of the emperors' son, he defects to the Alliance.

Hurstwine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hurstwine_6.png
Voiced by: Taisuke Nakano (Japanese), Stephen Spencer (English)

An agent of the Empire with a history with New Nevaea (especially Garoo) and a loathing of non-humans.

  • Chekhov's Gun: After getting captured by the Alliance, the guards at his cell note that he's been requesting extra salt with his meals. Turns out he was using that extra salt to rust away the metal bars in an effort to escape, and attempt to kill Nowa before returning to the Empire.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: What his attempt to kill Nowa after the Alliance's victory over Aldric's army boils down to, regardless of whether or not you manage to recruit all 119 heroes up to that point. Either Parrielle winds up Taking the Bullet to protect Nowa (less than 119), or Leene leaps in and deflects the arrow, preventing any deaths (all 119). Either way, his attempt at turning the Alliance's greatest triumph into a Pyrrhic Victory fails.
  • Fantastic Racism: Absolutely hates any of the non-humanoid characters, referring to them as "tailed freaks" with "disgusting appendages," among other things. He is not subtle at all about this.
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: Hurstwine has wide, intense eyes with constricted pupils, which lends him a crazed, threatening look.
  • Hate Sink: An amoral, racist and violent man with no redeeming qualities.
  • Hero Killer: He can potentially end up killing Perrielle as she shields Nowa from an arrow dripped with deadly poison.
  • In the Hood: In keeping with his threatening vibe, he sports a long cape with a hood.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Incredibly racist towards the non-human characters.

Heinrich

Voiced by: Yuki Kaji (Japanese), George Weightman (English)

Narungarde

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/narungarde.png

Voiced by: Mie Sonozaki (Japanese), Nicole Gose (English)

  • Casting a Shadow: She uses powerful Dark element magic and shoots orbs of purplish energy.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: In addition to her darkness magic, she also casts Earth magic, with her "Land's Armor" spell giving her (and Hurstwine) an additional 50 Armor points and her "Rock Thrust" used as a long-range attack.
  • The Dragon: She's revealed to be behind and in support of every action carried out by Dux Aldric.
  • The Faceless: Hides her face behind a Japanese-style kitsune (fox) mask.
  • Forced Sleep: She can cast the "Reaper's Lullaby" sleep spell on either a single character, or on the entire party if you knock Hurstwine out first during your first boss battle with them.
  • Lady of Black Magic: She's very elegant and graceful, dressed in feminine clothing with a female fox mask, eschewing physical attacks and wielding only powerful darkness based spells.

Emperor Balzac Fretranthys

  • The Unseen: Mentioned a lot, but never seen before he gets assassinated offscreen.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": In-game, he's mostly addressed as The Emperor. His given name is only revealed in Goldwyn's background while his family name is known because the Crown Prince's full name (Ishmal Fretranthys) is known.

Clarke

Voiced by: Keisuke Fujii (Japanese), Cory English (English)

An elegant theater patron who can be convinced to build a theater.

  • The Lost Lenore: There was a woman in Clarke's past he deeply loved. The theater is closed for one day while he visits her grave.
  • Luck-Based Mission: Recruiting him requires you to buy a script from the local shop, which has a very small chance of showing up every 30 real minutes or so.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Herb tea.

    Norristar

Sallas Baelrant

Voiced by: Kenji Yamauchi (Japanese), Neil Roberts (English)

The King of Norristar, Sallas is a stern man who tends to broke few disobeying orders.

  • Defiant to the End: After the battle at the Alliance Castle, it's revealed that he was tortured by the Empire for its location, but gave them nothing.
  • The Good King: Played with; He's stated by Elektra to be an excellent king during peacetime, but since the game is taking place during a war he comes off as a self-interest coward who refuses to devote resources to his allies and eventually decides to abandon his people to save his own skin (though it's implied that he eventually came to regret it so much that he chose to die).
  • Dirty Coward: Zigzagged; After the Empire invades his city, he decides to abandon his people and escape for his life. However, upon being captured he evidently died without giving up his former allies, with Vorrdice speculating that he came to regret his cowardice
  • Killed Offscreen: Is tortured to death by the Empire sometime after the fall of Norristar
  • Walking Spoiler: A lot of the impact that Sallas has on the plot only happens after his death.
  • What You Are in the Dark: In spite of his earlier cowardice, when put under torture he ultimately refused to give up the location of the Alliance HQ seemingly out of a desire to atone. Learning of this convinces Elektra that deep down Sallas was the decent man she believed him to be.

Elektra

Voiced by: Hekiru Shiina (Japanese), Ina Marie Smith (English)

Commander of Norristar's forces, Elektra is well known for both her beauty and incredible skill on a battlefield.

  • Cultured Badass: Due to Sallas being an excellent peacetime king, she was able to get an education under him and learned much of strategy, art, and culture. It's part of the reason she's so indebted to him.
  • Lady of War: Elektra has beautiful long flowing hair, wields a delicate rapier and attacks with grace and precision. Her heavy armor makes no her less graceful.
  • My Greatest Failure: She views her inability to save Sallas as this.

Maxim

Voiced by: Chikahiro Kobayashi (Japanese), James Alexander (English)

Elektra's second-in-command, Maxim is a suave man who never refuses a lady in need.

  • Act of True Love: He wants to stay and protect his love, Elektra, even though she orders him not to. Other soldiers also join Maxim, although they are more motivated to save their commander than any feelings of love.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Chivalrous, brave, always willing to help a lady in need, and easy on the eyes.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Roast beef.

    New Neveah

Tropes applying to CJ, Garoo, and Isha

  • All Your Powers Combined: A 3-man Hero Combo is available to CJ, Garoo and Isha if they are together in the party, and a seperate 6-man Hero Combo if you also have Nowa, Seign and Marisa.
  • Continuity Nod: The Hero Combo used by CJ, Garoo and Isha is them performing a series of Link Attacks from Rising.
  • True Companions: The three, despite initially barely tolerating one another, are now as close as family, and are fiercely protective of each other (and of Garoo's daughter, Allaby). Fittingly, if one of them falls in battle, the other two will gain the Fiery Spirit (for CJ and Garoo) or Awakening (for Isha) buffs and comment that they're going to get vengeance.

CJ

Voiced by: Fairouz Ai (Japanese), Elsie Lovelock (English)

An ever chipper and friendly treasure hunter who settled in New Nevaeh, she is searching for a cure for the health issues plaguing Isha and Garoo's daughter Allaby.

Garoo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garroo.png
Adventurer on the Wind
Voiced by: Taro Kiuchi (Japanese), Tim Bentinck (English)

A kangaroo beastyn mercenary who initially found himself roped into CJ and Isha's business against his will, he grew to care deeply for them. He later takes a job with Marisa's Guardians as a bodyguard, bringing his sickly daughter to Yarnaan as well.

Isha

Voiced by: Ai Kakuma (Japanese), Madeline Pell (English)

The new mayor of New Neveah, Isha is a shrewd and chipper businesswoman who's always on the lookout to make a business deal, but is secretly and slowly dying from an anomalous condition that allows her to use magic naturally. She is very close with her friends and partners, CJ and Garoo.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Was ostracized by the other children of New Nevaeh in her youth due to her unusual ability to cast magic without a rune lens, and her distinct blue hair that occurred as a side effect of this ability.
  • An Ice Person: Her unique rune allows her to spawn a row of sharp icicles on her foes.
  • Blessed with Suck: She has the ability to naturally cast magic without bearing a rune lens, thanks to an unusual phenomenon called the "Barrow's Blessing." She actually does have a natural rune lens from birth... inside her body. It is stated that due to being embedded in her major organs, this will eventually kill her.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father was the former mayor of New Nevaeh, who disappeared following the uncovering of the Runebarrows. In his absence, she became acting mayor.
  • Hero of Another Story: Is one of the three protagonists from Rising
  • Lightning Bruiser: Not only is she a terrific mage, her speed stat is extremely high, so she can absolutely erase mobs in the first movement of a battle with the right rune.
  • Mage Born of Muggles: Was born able to use magic without using a rune lens, which is normally considered impossible. Turns out it's because she does have a rune lens... in her body. Which will eventually kill her.
  • Making a Splash: Her best affinity is with Water magic, but she can use any element well.
  • Power at a Price: Can use magic without bearing a rune lens, much to the astonishment of others. Turns out that this is because she actually does bear a raw rune lens within her body, which will eventually kill her as it is embedded within her major organs.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Her blue hair is considered very unusual and noteworthy to the people of New Nevaeh, and turns out to be tied to her ability to cast magic without a rune lens. This is because she was actually born with a rune lens inside her body.

Gocteau

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gocteau.png
Guild Leader
Voiced by: Chafurin (Japanese), Dan Starkey (English)

  • Defector from Decadence: He used to be from the Empire and is currently on the run due to foiling one of Aldric's schemes in the past.
  • Intrepid Merchant: Shrewd Gocteau runs several guilds in Allraan and claims to be able to literally smell money.
  • Only in It for the Money: When first recruited, Gocteau momentarily forgets himself, noting that he’s excited about the prospect of the money he’ll make running the Alliance's guild, before correcting his remark to something more altruistic.
  • Tacky Tuxedo: Gocteau sports a gaudily flashy suit with brightly-coloured jewellery and accessories in the spirit of him being of Nouveau Riche merchant stock.
  • While You Were in Diapers: He’s 68 years old, and as he himself is fond of boasting: "Heaven hadn't even crapped you down to earth yet when I started working this business. So do us all a favour, clam it, and watch a master ply his trade."

    Other Recruits

Faye

A belligerent young thief who turns up in the Alliance's home base, causing trouble and pilfering from the castle coffers.

  • Bratty Half-Pint: While she's actually 13, she's rather short for her age, and is a massive brat. Aside from running around the castle and stealing food, she constantly taunts the guards, fakes remorse, and then mocks Nowa when he shows pity on her and allows her to stay in the castle.
  • Crocodile Tears: Pulls these on Nowa when he and the guards finally manage to catch her... then promptly turns them right off and mocks him for falling for it when he offers to let her stay at the castle.
  • Filching Food for Fun: Runs around stealing food from the castle's stores, but seems to just be doing it to piss people off.
  • Joke Character: Despite claiming to be "The Mighty Faye," her stats are absolutely terrible and unlike late-bloomers like Mio and Mellore, they remain low. Her only saving grace in battle is that she can steal from treasure chests with absolute certainty, but that's a situational skill at best, and beyond it, she's overshadowed in every way by almost everyone else.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Refers to herself as "The Mighty Faye," despite being just some random kid running around the castle and causing trouble.

Enoe

A resident of Hishahn who wants to follow in the footsteps of the famed guildmaster, Gocteau.

  • Those Two Guys: He, Fume, and Larla have known each other since childhood.

Larla

A lazy woman who wants to make the maximum amount of profits by doing the minimum amount of work possible.

  • Those Two Guys: She, Fume, and Enoe have known each other since childhood.

Celia

Kurtz's wife, another chef of renown who has disappeared and is thought to be dead.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: She was brainwashed by the Syndicate and serves as their top enforcer. It takes tasting her husband's cooking to return her memories.
  • Chef of Iron: Unlike her husband, Celia is not only a chef but also a capable fighter.
  • Fate Worse than Death: She marks a loser's chef hat with the Toque of Shame. Most of the chefs would rather die.

Shixeen

A steeryn with a penchant for card games, who comes to challenge Nowa once he becomes a threat to her skill level.

  • Amazonian Beauty: As a minotaur woman she's incredibly muscular, but she still has a very feminine face and a nicely-sized bust. Her being so muscular really only adds to her beauty.
  • Bait-and-Switch: She had sought out Nowa for a battle, talking about Nowa's feared reputation for fighting even children and taking up challenges anywhere. After some convincing Nowa decides to pull out his hookswords right there in the building... Only for Shixeen to freak out and clarify that she meant a card battle.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: She will agree to join Nowa if he defeats her... In a card game. Of course, it turns out she can actually fight outside of card games.
  • King of Games: She's an S-Ranked player of the Card Game and considered the final challenge.
  • Secretly Wealthy: The reason why she's able to have expensive hobbies such as collecting cards and other things is because her parents are wealthy merchants.
  • Status Buff: Her unique skill is a warcry that buffs damage against armor.

Stadler

Voiced by: Mitsuaki Kanuka (Japanese), Cory English (English)

A drill instructor in Impershi'arc willing to join the Alliance if Nowa is up to his standard.

  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Recruiting him requires beating him in a mock battle.
  • Leaked Experience: Recruiting him allows the rest of your team at the fort to gain experience so that they won't be completely behind.

Chandra

A dragon whose natural rune lens goes berserk inside of it, threatening travelers of the Eldroad until Nowa and Code L calm her.

  • Defeat Equals Friendship: When encountered, her overwhelming power causes her to lash out at Nowa, meaning he has to fight her to calm her down.

Aleior

A griffin known to Marisa, she goes to find him to ensure he isn't hunted

  • Iconic Item: He wears a blue bandana on his left hind leg. It's how Marisa identifies him.

Milana

A strange young girl who claims to be a necromancy master, she joins up with the army with minimal effort upon finding her wandering the castle grounds.

  • Character Select Forcing: Downplayed: she requests to go with Marisa and Markus to Castle Harganthia and has some unique interactions there, but is not explicitly required. However, her magic spells are a huge help against the enemies and the boss there, so it's not a bad idea to agree.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She's a gloomy necromancer, but she's still on your side and is happy to help out. Plus, she has great compatibility with the Darkness family of rune lenses.
  • In the Hood: Wears a purple hood over her head.
  • Mundane Utility: What does she bind the spirits of the undead to do? Cook her meals, clean her room, wake her up in the morning.
  • Necromancer: She has actual powers over souls and the undead. One of her abilities is to summon a group of Revenants to whack all enemies for a hefty amount of damage.

Moriarty "Momo" Gardestein

Voiced by: Tomoya Kousaka (Japanese), Minh Ton (English)

A seemingly young mage girl with a passion for anything cute, who recruits Nowa to help fix an experiment gone awry. As Nowa later finds out, out of "young," "mage," and "girl," only one of those things are the truth.

  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: Despite appearing as a girl, Momo doesn't hide the fact that they weren't born as one and looks the way they do because it's "cute". Officially the game classifies them as male. The best way to talk about Momo is that she identifies as "cute," and leave it there.
  • The Arch Mage: Has been studying magic and rune-lenses for over a hundred years, and has all of the talent that comes with that.
  • Expy: Their backstory is incredibly similar to Cagliostro from Granblue Fantasy, being an originally-male centuries-old mage who currently resides in the body of a cute girl that they love to play up for all it's worth.
    • Also serves as a counterpart to Suikoden archmage characters like Crowley and Mazus; a legendary magus recruited late in the game with some of the strongest magic in the game.
  • Playing with Fire: Momo comes equipped with both a Fire and Inferno Rune Lens, allowing them all but the final Fire spell from the get.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Despite appearing to be a young girl, Momo is actually at least a century old.

Selbineth

Voiced by: Mami Kadotani (Japanese), Rae Lim (English)

A strange woman who appears in the basement of the Alliance Castle. Claiming to be sent by a dimensional deity, she offers Nowa and his troops the chance to step into other realms to train themselves.

  • Ambiguously Human: She claims to have been sent by a dark god to aid the heroes. What that makes her isn't exactly clear.
  • Comically Cross-Eyed: Her eyes are permanently crossed, distracting from her often morbid manner of speaking.
  • Peninsula of Power Leveling: She provides one - using her Mysterious Room can quickly boost the party to near endgame levels.

El Alicanto

A bizarre Masked Luchador who Nowa inexplicably finds in the Norristari mountains, El Alicanto itches for a worthy challenger to his might.

  • Bilingual Bonus: Alicanto is a mythical bird of Chilean origin.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Nowa beating him in a duel convinces him to join the Alliance.
  • Masked Luchador: Oddly for a game in this setting, he more resembles a Mexican wrestler than a soldier or adventurer.
  • Meaningful Name: As noted in Bilingual Bonus, the Alicanto is a Chilean mythological bird that can change its plumage from silver to gold based on the precious metals it eats; El Alicanto has both colours in his outfit, and he's found on a mountain (which is a typical mining spot for ore).

    Other Antagonists (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Markus

Voiced by: Kenyuu Horiuchi (Japanese), Angus Wright (English)

A strange skeleton with delusions of nobility, who ineffectually accosts Yarnaan with threats and offers to zombify the population.

  • Affably Evil: He's a walking lich who makes people undead. However, he's pretty pleasant about it. His whole schtick could be summarized as: "Being undead is awesome, you get eternal life, come on, let me kill you so you can have the gift too."
  • Dem Bones: A walking skeleton decked out in royal regalia.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Markus wants nothing more than to make people undead and views the eternal life as a gift. However, he refuses to make anyone undead who does not want it, and in fact, thinks that such things lead to ruin.
  • Laughably Evil: While he's introduced threatening Yarnaan, he's mainly affable and prone to comical fits due to not being taken seriously. Sure enough, it turns out that he's not bad compared to the other zombie leader, Diradhe.
  • Spanner in the Works: After the Alliance defeats Diradhe, Markus uses his own necromancer powers to eliminate the revenants used by the Empire, one of several steps used to cut Aldric's forces down to size.
  • Squishy Wizard: He's an incredibly powerful mage and is functionally an upgrade to Milana (having all of her skills as well as the ability to summon the Skeleton King in full) but has pitiful very little health and will literally crumple with a stiff breeze.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Once he pulls a Heel–Face Turn. He's still a lich who's looking to turn people into his zombie thralls, but he's on your side. At the end of the day, he just wants his castle back and is happy with helping you out as repayment for helping him reclaim it.

Diradhe

An undead creature who raises the dead for the Imperials, he later attacks Yarnaan with his revenants and drives the Guardians away.

  • Eviler than Thou: Unlike Markus, who understands that undeath isn't for everyone and won't grant it to those who clearly don't want it, Diradhe is a villain through and through and will make scores of undead from anyone whether they want it or not. He's also working for the Empire while Markus eventually sides with the Alliance.
  • Love Makes You Evil: He raised his lover against her wishes and he acts the way he does to try and please her.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Markus used to be close, but Diradhe's love for the countess turned things to ruin quickly.
