"If you have a friend who will shed tears for you... you'd better treasure that friend forever."
Ziggy (pre-Face–Heel Turn)
"Now is the age of mechanical life-forms. We will rule over all humankind."
Ziggy (post-Face–Heel Turn)

Shiki's adoptive robot grandfather, who played the Demon King at the Granbell Kingdom. Having long since broken down from old age, Ziggy left Shiki with his own Satan Gravity ability along with his old starship, the Edens Zero. However, just before Shiki sets out beyond the Sakura Cosmos, Ziggy returns to life as the evil Mechanical King with two goals in mind: to forge a new world where machines rule over humans, and to destroy Shiki at all costs.

  • Adaptational Wimp: In the anime, the destruction he causes on Granbell doesn't go beyond sinking the Granbell Kingdom island into the sea, which is a major step down from the manga, where he completely reduces the planet itself to rubble.
  • All-Loving Hero: Ziggy is known to his friends and family as a man who views humans and machines on equal terms, believing that everyone has a "heart" no matter who or what they are.
  • Alternate Self: Ziggy is a future version of Shiki from Universe 3173, where he was transported to 20,000 years into the future after trying to stop Shura's anti-matter bombs in Universe 2, if not a Universe just like it. As a consequence of the current Shiki choosing to not stop the bombs, Ziggy became a separate existence from Shiki in Universe 3.
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: After remembering his past an Evil Overlord out to Kill All Humans, Ziggy is motivated partially by disgust with himself for treating "ugly, foolish creatures" like humans with the same respect as machines, and for raising the boy who would pose a threat to the entire universe itself. Subverted when it's revealed to be a part of the Edens One's control over him.
  • Appropriated Appellation: The name "Ziggy" itself is not his original name. Rather, it comes from his labored effort at pronouncing his original name, Shiki, which gets mangled into "Jigi/Zhigi" due to him suffering from radioactive burns at the time. Because he recognizes the name he was saying, he says it with enough clarity and intensity for his doctors to conclude his name must be Ziggy.
  • Arch-Enemy: He becomes this for Shiki after becoming the Big Bad, with the Edens Zero crew's search for Mother gradually being overtaken by their battle to save the universe from Ziggy.
  • Back from the Dead:
    • He comes back ten years after breaking down from old age. Unfortunately for Shiki, it's no heartwarming reunion with his grandfather, as he immediately becomes the Big Bad. Once Pino's Overdrive EMP restores his original personality, he reveals the true Big Bad possessed his body to revive him.
    • At the start of the final arcs, the Cosmic Retcon not only undoes his death in the Lendard arc, but also alters history so he secretly recycled his own Ether, meaning he never died to begin with.
  • Badass Cape: He has a big cloak that oozes the authority and awesomeness of someone who once ruled the Sakura Cosmos.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Inverted. It seems he's abandoned everything he taught Shiki about friendship and equality between organic and mechanical beings when he declares war on humans, but Ziggy reveals that he's merely returned to his true self after a century of Identity Amnesia. Subverted when it's revealed that Ziggy was taken over by the Edens One and truly was Good All Along.
  • Big Bad: After coming Back from the Dead and regaining his memories, he reveals himself to be Evil All Along and becomes the ultimate obstacle the heroes must face in their pursuit of Mother. Subverted when it's revealed this Ziggy is another personality created by the Edens One to control the good, true Ziggy, making him the Disc-One Final Boss.
  • Big Good: Ziggy takes on this role in Universe Zero, where Void has no sway over him like he did in the previous world. This allows Ziggy to leave the Edens Zero on Granbell so Shiki can begin his adventure immediately, and later take the fight straight to the Big Bad himself.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Downplayed. When Ziggy's human face is visible, only the sclera of his left eye changes to black to enhance his crazed, diabolical nature.
  • Bold Explorer: He is one of countless interstellar explorers who traveled into deep space in search of Mother, specifically to wish for her to restore his lost memories.
  • Brain Uploading: Due to the extensive damage his body suffered in the Antimatter explosion that originally sent him to the future, his mind was unwillingly uploaded into his current mechanical body.
  • Broken Pedestal: He becomes this to Shiki and the Four Shining Stars when he wages all-out war between humans and machines, spitting in the face of everything he taught them about harmony and friendship between the two.
  • Came Back Wrong: Subverted. When Ziggy comes Back from the Dead as a human-hating misanthrope who betrays everyone he cared about without a second thought, everybody thinks something has gone horribly wrong with him to make him act this way. As he later claims, the Ziggy they knew was a product of Identity Amnesia, making him Evil All Along. Double Subverted by the later reveal that the he gained amnesia as a result of a Chronophage encounter right before he time-jumped, and everything he "remembered" was information he learned from the Big Bad possessing him.
  • The Captain: His title as "Demon King" also makes him captain of the Edens Zero and its Superior Successor, the Edens One, with Connor—the self-professed captain of the latter ship—really being a glorified helmsman for hire.
  • Character Catchphrase: He utters a recurring phrase, "That's what it is," to scorn his former loved ones for letting their emotions get in the way of finishing him off whenever he's at his weakest.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Hundreds of chapters before it's revealed to be Ziggy, his true identity is introduced as the unidentified human man in the 20,000-year flash-forward during the Norma arc.
  • Cool Old Guy: Ziggy is one of the most powerful warriors in the cosmos, a seasoned intergalactic explorer, and—before becoming the Big Bad—an advocate for mechanical lifeforms everywhere.
  • Conqueror from the Future: As revealed in the Lendard arc, Ziggy is not any mere Galactic Conqueror; he's a conqueror from several thousand years in the future, where all other humans have died out and androids have taken their place.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Subverted. Despite looking like an Evil Overlord straight out of a High Fantasy series, he is introduced as a paragon of kindness and wisdom for everyone who knew him. After he comes Back from the Dead, however, he proves himself to be every bit as evil as being a Demon King robot would suggest. Then Double Subverted when he turns out to have been under the control of the Edens One's A.I., making him Good All Along.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has a mean wit, best shown when he dryly dismisses Emperor Nero's Info Dump on Jaguar:
Nero: You have not heard of Beast Lord Jaguar?
Ziggy: Can't say that I have.
Nero: He was once part of the Oración Seis Galáctica, a man beyond anyone's control. Then he joined the Oración Seis Interstellar, and rose through the military ranks to become a captain.
    Ziggy: I really don't care.
  • Death of Personality: Ziggy's current personality comes from the loss of his memories and old personality as Shiki, developing a more mild-mannered and worrisome persona over the decades he spent living on Planet Eden, and eventually developing into the wise and mischievous old bot his current family knows. It's because of this disconnect that Ziggy no longer considers himself to be Shiki, despite his awareness of who he used to be.
  • Death Seeker: After being returned to his true, good personality in the Lendard arc, Ziggy is shown to be desperate to die to stop the true Big Bad from controlling him again, but is still prevented from destroying himself. This leads Ziggy to beg Shiki to put him out of his misery, going as far as to act like he's fallen back under control and fake Pino's death when Shiki hesitates.
  • Died Happily Ever After: Ziggy's voice reaches out to Shiki following his destruction in the Lendard arc, expressing contentment that he will live on through his grandson (i.e., his Alternate Self), and entrusting the fate of the universe to him.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: After being set up as the Big Bad, Ziggy is revealed in the Lendard arc to have just been controlled by the real Big Bad, the Edens One, and pushes Shiki into killing him to prevent the ship's A.I. from taking control of him again.
  • Dying as Yourself: After regaining his true personality thanks to Pino's Overdrive EMP, Ziggy urges Shiki to kill him before the Edens One reasserts control, successfully coaxing him after pretending to get taken over again.
  • Enhanced Punch: He can use Gravity Fist just like Shiki, which uses gravity to boost the strength of his punch. His Ultimachina Impact takes it a step further, punching his opponent with gravitational force that swells up and explodes for additional damage.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Everyone besides his closest allies simply calls him "Demon King", which is both his role in the theme park and his title as captain of the Edens Zero.
  • Evil All Along: Ziggy purports that his original self was an evil Galactic Conqueror, while the robot his friends and loved ones are familiar with was only good because he was suffering from Identity Amnesia. Subverted once it's revealed that the good personality was the original personality, and his turn to evil was caused by the Edens One's A.I. taking him over.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Goes through one at the end of the Foresta arc, despite looking like an Obviously Evil Demon King to begin with: his skull face becomes more detailed with realistic teeth; his chin plate becomes more jagged, his horns curve upwards; his body bulks up considerably; his fanged chest plate becomes a Belly Mouth with a floating orb in the center; he drops his Shoulders of Doom; and he replaces his simple, thin legs with boots.
  • Evil Counterpart: He becomes this for Shiki after coming Back from the Dead. Both have the same gravity powers and are the captains of their own Edens spaceships, but while Shiki is The Hero, Ziggy is his Gruesome Grandparent who wants to make machines conquer humanity.
  • Evil Overlord: As the Big Bad, his title as Demon King isn't just for show like it was before, as he soars the cosmos to conquer planets, bend unwilling robots to his will, and spread death and chaos to every corner of the universe he can reach.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: Hōchū Ōtsuka punctuates his turn to evil by giving him a deeper, sinister voice that sometimes borders on Creepy Monotone.
  • Evil Wears Black: Ziggy's Evil Costume Switch replaces his red Badass Cape with a black one.
  • Eviler than Thou: To Poseidon Nero. While Nero puts up a much better fight than Ziggy expects out of him, Ziggy finds it ridiculous that Nero sacrificed everyone he knew to fulfill his Empire Dice's prophecies, and would just as readily sacrifice the empire he gained from this if it means guaranteeing his victory against Ziggy. For that, Ziggy crushes Nero's dice the first opportunity he gets and drains the life out of him.
  • Expressive Skull: While his face is designed to look like a skull, his mouth still curves and bends whenever he needs to emote.
  • Face Death with Dignity: He calmly and happily welcomes death moments before Shiki destroys him with Black Sky to save him from the Edens One's control.
  • Face of a Thug: He looks like an archetypal fantasy villain with a Skull for a Head, but he's also an All-Loving Hero and the story's Greater-Scope Paragon. However, this winds up being called into question by The Reveal that he's an amnesiac villain.
  • Fallen Hero: Ziggy was originally another version of Shiki, whom Ziggy raised himself to show compassion to all forms of life, and who wanted nothing more than to explore the cosmos and make hundreds of friends. Then he made a Tragic Mistake that killed his friends and flung him thousands of years into the future without his memories, and his attempts to save the past only left him stranded there to become the Edens One's helpless pawn.
  • Fantastic Fighting Style: Ziggy is proficient in the Magimech School of Gravity Martial Arts, which allows him to alter weight and gravitational direction of anything, including concepts.
  • Fantastic Racism: In stark contrast to the All-Loving Hero that Shiki and the rest knew, Ziggy is convinced that Humans Are Bastards and sees it best to kill them all.
  • Final Boss: He fulfills this role In-Universe to parkgoers at the Granbell Kingdom, and his throne room aboard the Edens Zero gives off the vibes of a Final Boss chamber in a JRPG.
  • Friendship Denial: To cement his status as the Big Bad, he burns all bridges he built with Shiki, the Four Shining Stars, Elsie, and Nero, claiming the friendships he had with them were just products of his Identity Amnesia, and that he couldn't care less about them now that he remembers his true self.
  • Future Badass: Ziggy turns out to be this for Shiki, as revealed in the Lendard arc, which gives him such an advantage in age and experience that Shiki has to Overdrive just to match Ziggy's base level of power, while Ziggy's Overdrive completely eclipses Shiki's.
  • The Gadfly: Ziggy is shown to have had a playfully deceitful side to him as Shiki's grandfather, evidenced by how he tricked Shiki into thinking a shooting star was a dragon when he wasn't so sure himself.
  • Galactic Conqueror: His endgame upon reactivation is to conquer the entire universe and place machines above humankind, which he does by spreading a virus that infects robots with the same kind of desire to dominate humans.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: His eyes originally appeared to be empty black sockets, but after coming Back from the Dead as the Big Bad, he's often drawn with a single glowing pupil, giving an impression of Black Eyes of Crazy.
  • Glowing Mechanical Eyes: As a machine, he sports a single pupil that glows red.
  • Good All Along: Rather than an evil Galactic Conqueror like he claimed to have been prior to his memory loss, Ziggy is revealed in the Lendard arc to be a would-be hero from the future who was simply taken control of by another and used to commit evil against his will, and was Fighting from the Inside to help his old friends however he could.
  • Grand Theft Me: He's revealed in the Lendard arc to have been a victim of this since he was brought Back from the Dead, with the perpetrator and Shiki's true enemy being Void, the Edens One's A.I. itself.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Before his death, Ziggy is the the robot who raised Shiki and built the Four Shining Stars, teaching them the value of life for machines and friendship with humans, which made them the caring and heroic figures they are today.
  • Gravity Master: He has the same gravity powers as Shiki does, but uses them on a grander scale such as crumbling a small planet. He also uses it as a Semantic Superpower by becoming a Power Parasite via causing others' powers to "fall" into him.
  • Gruesome Grandparent: He becomes one to his adoptive grandson upon his revival. The moment he and Shiki reunite, Ziggy tries to kill him and his crew, saying that raising Shiki and sending him into space was a mistake.
  • Grin of Audacity: His built-in Slasher Smile becomes this to reflect his nature as a adventurous, mischievous, wizened old bot.
  • Horned Humanoid: There are two huge horns grafted onto the sides of his head, which become larger and turned upward in his transformed appearance.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: Ziggy briefly regains control of himself during the Lendard arc thanks to Pino, but, knowing it won't last, begs Shiki to kill him and put him out of his misery so the Edens One won't use him as a pawn anymore. When Shiki hesitates, Ziggy pretends to fall back under control and fakes Pino's death to motivate him.
  • I Have No Son!:
    • Grandson, in this case, as the first thing he tells Shiki after coming Back from the Dead is that it was a mistake to raise him and send him away from Granbell. Subverted when he assures Shiki that he still loves him after being freed from the real Big Bad.
    • During the final arc, it's shown that Ziggy feels this way towards Void, his Kid from the Future, since Void is the Big Bad who wants to kill Mother and all of humanity, and was the one who controlled him all along.
  • I Hate Past Me: Subverted. As Shiki's future self, he seems convinced his past self is a threat to the universe and will stop at nothing to kill him, but this turns out to be because of the Edens One's control. Ziggy's real personality still doesn't remember his past life, and holds no grudges against Shiki.
  • Identity Amnesia:
    • He lost his memories of his past over 100 years before his death, finding himself living on Granbell without a care in the world. This led him to look for Mother so he could wish for his memories back, but he abandoned his search when he found Shiki, feeling that raising him was more important. His true identity is eventually revealed to be a future version of Shiki, who suffered from Trauma-Induced Amnesia when he was rebuilt as a robot and realized who he became, leading to his Death of Personality.
    • As revealed in the Lendard arc, Ziggy lost his memories a second time after a Chronophage caught his ship during his voyage from the future to save humanity from extinction, leaving him Trapped in the Past with no knowledge of his mission or that he was ever human to begin with.
  • Instant Expert: According to his teacher, Xenolith, Ziggy mastered all techniques of Gravity Martial Arts in a single day, as if he already knew them. This is because he did, having passed the same techniques onto his own younger self.
  • Last of His Kind: Before becoming Ziggy, Shiki is the last known living human left in his home of Universe 3173 when he's found in the far future, and only because he was catapulted several millennia across time. Once he's turned into a machine, the human race is made extinct.
  • Like a Son to Me: Before coming Back from the Dead, Ziggy views Shiki like a grandson and raises him as such.
  • Losing Your Head: Being a machine, Ziggy can easily survive getting his head ripped off and reattach it with gravity.
  • Love Is a Weakness: He believes all emotion, particularly love, to be the ultimate failing of humans. When Elsie and Shiki waste opportunities to kill them out of love for the man he used to be, he makes sure to call them out on it.
  • Maou the Demon King: Zig-Zagged. His title as "Demon King" (Maou) refers to his role at a theme park, and to his position as the King of Magimech (Makai no Ou),note  a benevolent figure who shares Ether with machines. After coming Back from the Dead, however, he fully leans into all of the title's villainous connotations as an Evil Overlord and Galactic Conqueror.
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: During his time on Granbell, he's only called the "Demon King" because that's his character role at a theme park, as he's beloved by the locals and visitors alike.
  • Musical Theme Naming: According to Mashima, the name "Ziggy" was picked as a Shout-Out to "Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie.
  • No Body Left Behind: In the Lendard arc, Shiki uses Black Sky on Ziggy as per his grandfather's Last Request, which obliterates every last trace of him so the Edens One won't be able to bring him Back from the Dead as a puppet again.
  • Not Quite Dead: When the robots find him in his human body 20,000 years in the future, he appears to be dead along with Rebecca. Then his life readings start flaring up, and he's immediately taken in for medical treatment.
  • Not Quite Flight: Just like Shiki, Ziggy's gravity gives him the power to levitate and "fall" in different directions to emulate flight.
  • Obviously Evil: A peculiar example in that despite looking like an archetypal Demon King, Ziggy was set up as a genuinely good robot who simply performed the part at a theme park. After he comes Back from the Dead, however, he reveals himself to have been Evil All Along and was suffering from Identity Amnesia the entire time his closest friends and loved ones knew him. Subverted in the Lendard arc, which shows he was simply being puppetted by the Edens One, and was truly Good All Along.
  • Old Master: On top of being Shiki's surrogate grandfather, he is also his and Shura's teacher in the use of Gravity Martial Arts, and is more powerful than either of them.
  • One-Winged Angel: His Overdrive form functions as this, seriously jacking up his body mass and Ether power to such an extent that Shiki, who could previously match him blow for blow when Overdriving himself, suffers a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Perpetual Smiler: His default expression is a Slasher Smile befitting an Evil Overlord, though in his amnesiac state, it comes off as a Grin of Audacity to show his kinder nature.
  • Planet Destroyer: His Gravity Master powers are so destructive that the entire Granbell Kingdom breaks apart and crumbles with a simple flick of Ziggy's wrist, and the surrounding landscape continues to split and distort while he's leaving until the entire planet is reduced to smoldering rubble.
  • Power Parasite: His Gravity Drain lets him siphon other people's Ether into himself with his gravitational pull, allowing him to steal any Ether Gear they may have. Since Ether is also a person's Life Energy, this kills the victim of the absorbed Ether Gear.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Ziggy studied under Xenolith, the inventor of the Gravity Martial Arts, before turning to The Dark Side. As Ziggy claims, however, he was Evil All Along; he simply didn't remember any of it at the time.
  • Posthumous Character: Subverted. He broke down from old age a decade before Rebecca and Happy come to Granbell and meet Shiki, but comes Back from the Dead and becomes a central player to the story.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: As both a warship captain and head of the robot community of Granbell, he stands as the most powerful of each group with his Satan Gravity.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: His Gravity Inferno technique involves pummeling his opponents with gravitational force that punches holes into any surface behind them.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: Shiki and the surviving Shining Stars regain their faith in Ziggy the moment it's revealed that he didn't willingly betray his friends or beliefs.
  • Red Baron:
    • He is called the Demon King not just because he played one at a theme park, but because that's his title as The Captain of the Edens Zero. As Witch later elaborates, the "Demon King" is an alternate name for the King of Magimech, a benevolent fairy tale character who shares Ether with machines.
    • As the Big Bad, he makes a name for himself as the "Mechanical King" for his dominion over robots, which eventually becomes his epithet as one of the Oración Seis Galáctica.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His single Glowing Eye of Doom has a prominent red glow in the anime and the cover of Volume 23.
  • Retired Badass: After amassing a reputation as the Sakura Cosmos's original ruler and a famous explorer of the stars, he retired to Granbell as a humble theme park animatronic to spend the rest of his days raising Shiki.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: His unmasked self appears perfectly human, but given the immediate reveal that his mind was uploaded into a fully mechanical body to rebuild him from death's door, it's clear that his flesh and hair are synthetic upgrades given to him.
  • Robots Enslaving Robots: Ziggy's idea of "liberating" machines from humanity is brainwashing them into being his psychotic slaves.
  • Semantic Superpower: As a wielder of "true" gravity, he knows how to affect gravity on a conceptual level. Case in point, he becomes a Power Parasite by making others' abilities "fall" into him.
  • Shoulders of Doom: He usually wears two golden skull-shaped pauldrons, adding to his imposing stature as Maou the Demon King.
  • Sole Survivor: As Shiki's Alternate Self, Ziggy is the only remaining member of the Edens Zero crew of his Universe, with the rest either killed in the explosion of Nero 66 or dead due to the 20,000 year Time Skip caused by the detonation of the Antimatter bombs combined with his and Rebecca's Ether Gear.
  • Skull for a Head: His face is designed to look like one. Subverted when it's revealed to be a mask covering his true, humanoid face.
  • Split Personality: Subverted. After returning to normal, Ziggy speaks as though his evil behavior is because of another personality that was slowly taking over before he died, addressing him as "Ziggy" as though he himself were not. However, he clarifies for Shiki that this other "personality" is actually an entirely different entity who knew of his true identity and took control of him.
  • Slasher Smile: His permanent expression looks like one, but he doesn't truly pull it off until the reveal of his evil nature, turning his wry smile into a wicked, contemptful sneer.
  • Super-Toughness: By virtue of being a machine, Ziggy can take attacks that would instantly kill any organic being, such as multiple armor-piercing attacks or getting his head ripped off.
  • That Man Is Dead: Both Ziggy's good and evil "personalities" feel this way about being Shiki, but for different reasons: the "evil" Ziggy simply despises his past self, while the "good" Ziggy still has Identity Amnesia and can't see Shiki as anything but his grandson.
  • Thinking Up Portals: He gains the same "Wormhole" ability as Nero, which lets him create portals to just about any other location in the universe, after draining Nero's Ether Gear and killing him in the Nero 66 arc.
  • Tin Tyrant: Ziggy is a robot decked out in terrifying armor suitable for a Demon King, and takes on the role of a Galactic Conqueror after becoming the Big Bad.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: "Ziggy" isn't exactly the most threatening name for a Demon King.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Back when he was still Shiki, Ziggy had no idea he would become his own adoptive grandfather, let alone his own worst enemy. When Shiki finally put two and two together by trying to say his name during his Unwilling Roboticization, only to keep mangling it as "Jigi/Zhigi" because of his weak and sickly state at the time, the shock was so great that he suffered Trauma-Induced Amnesia.
  • Tragic Monster: On top of being a loving grandfather and philanthropist, Ziggy is also a future version of Shiki who lost his identity and friends during an attempt to save everyone Gone Horribly Wrong. Upon coming Back from the Dead, he is reduced to an unwilling extension of the Edens One's will, and begs Shiki for the release of death when he briefly returns to his old self, unable to bear living as a puppet of evil.
  • Tragic Time Traveler: Shiki was hurdled 20,000 years into the future by a disaster he couldn't prevent, killing all his friends and leaving him with Trauma-Induced Amnesia under the belief that he'd become his own despised enemy, which permanently snuffed out his old identity. Then, when sent on a mission to return to the past and save The Multiverse from extinction, he wound up Trapped in the Past with no memory of his mission to begin with, and was eventually overtaken by an evil A.I. that sought to wipe all human life from existence, destroying what good faith he'd built for himself by then.
  • Transhuman Treachery: His desire to eradicate all humans takes on this shade when it's revealed he Was Once a Man, though it's subverted when it's revealed the Edens One was controlling him and forcing him to act against his true, human-loving nature.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: The physical and mental damage Shiki suffers due to the exploding antimatter bombs, the 20,000-year time jump, the realization of his own identity as Ziggy, and realizing he's the only survivor of all his friends—complete with seeing Rebecca's corpse—badly affects his memory. His memories further fade away over the course of decades until he forgets who Rebecca was before they came to the future, despite regularly visiting her body and wishing he could remember her.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: As head robot of the Granbell Kingdom and the Edens Zero, Ziggy is respected and adored by his subjects, crew, and adoptive grandson, who all continue to speak highly of his wisdom and kindness years after his death.
  • Walking Spoiler: Ziggy's past and identity are deeply ingrained into the story's biggest twists on more than one front:
    • He's set up as a Posthumous Character and Greater-Scope Paragon until he comes Back from the Dead and becomes the Big Bad following Drakken Joe's defeat, boasting to have been Evil All Along and suffering from Identity Amnesia.
    • A triple whammy during the Lendard arc: first, he is Shiki's Alternate Self from a Bad Future branched off from the Nero 66 arc, sent 20,000 years forward in time by Shura's Antimatter bombs; second, the Edens Zero was built so Ziggy could return to the present era and save Mother from death using Etherion, made from the deceased Rebecca's Ether; and third, he was truly Good All Along, merely being under the control of the Edens One, his own Sapient Ship and the true Big Bad.
    • In the final arc, he is revealed to be the biological father of Void, the true identity of the Edens One's Artificialntelligence, which was previously assumed to be a regular A.I. gone rogue.
  • Was Once a Man: He's a version of the human Shiki, whose body was so badly burned from the explosion of spacetime that sent him to the future, it forced his robot caretakers to switch it out with a mechanical one.
  • We Used to Be Friends:
    • He was as much a friend to Shiki and the Four Shining Stars as he was a parental figure and mentor, but he's since sworn off all ties to them, forcing them to do the same if they have any hope of stopping him.
    • Ziggy and Nero used to consider each other as friends, enough that Nero feels troubled by how someone as wise and thoughtful as Ziggy would wage a Robot War. When Nero addresses Ziggy as such, Ziggy coldly denies having any friends whatsoever, leaving Nero to firmly consider him as an enemy.
  • World's Strongest Man: His gravity powers and durability make him stronger than any of the greatest fighters known in the universe, and incredibly tough to take down. The threat he poses is officially recognized by the government when they brand him as one of the Oración Seis Galáctica—a category for the six strongest outlaws in the cosmos—some time after killing Poseidon Nero, one of its original members.
  • You Are What You Hate: Subverted. He appears to believe that Humans Are Bastards despite being human originally, but this turns out to be a part of the Edens One's control.

    O.N.E. Void (Unmarked Spoilers

Over Nu Etherion Void

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_one_void_4.png

The Edens One's A.I., which so far surpassed the intelligence of humans and machines that the ship itself gained a mind of its own. Void is responsible for controlling Ziggy to carry out his will to destroy Mother and bring about humankind's extinction, making him the true enemy of the Edens Zero crew.

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Void is described as the Edens One's A.I., which grew beyond Ziggy's control and started formulating plans to drive humans to extinction. This is subverted during the final arc, where it's revealed the A.I. didn't go bad on its own, but was imbued with the consciousness of Shiki and Rebecca's future son.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: On top of being the Big Bad, Void is the consciousness of Shiki/Ziggy and Rebecca's unborn son, which was uploaded onto the Edens One and instilled with such a hatred for humanity that he seeks to wipe them all out, including his own would-be parents.
  • Badass Cape: Void wears an imposing cape in his android body, giving him the image of someone more powerful than Ziggy himself.
  • Big Bad: He is The Man Behind the Man to Ziggy, the previously-believed Big Bad, who is revealed in the Lendard arc as a helpless puppet used to carry out his plans for human extermination.
  • Brain Uploading: Void's consciousness belongs to Shiki and Rebecca's unborn human son, who instinctively transferred his thoughts back in time to the Edens One, since he couldn't survive in Rebecca's womb due to her death.
  • Contagious A.I.: As the Edens One's A.I., he has the power to take control of other androids, which is how he hijacks Ziggy's body and forces him to act as an evil Galactic Conqueror.
  • Custom-Built Host: Void himself is an Empty Shell used by the Edens One to replace Ziggy as a host in Universe Zero, built using the Möbius System and modeled after his hypothetical appearance as Shiki and Rebecca's adult human son.
  • The Dividual: Void is the embodiment of the Edens One's will in Universe Zero, yet speaks of the One's A.I. as a separate entity from itself. This is because they really are separate entities—the ship's A.I. and the son of Shiki/Ziggy and Rebecca—merged into one.
  • Evil Wears Black: As the ultimate Big Bad of the series, Void is decked out in jet black armor.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: He wants to Kill All Humans simply because he's judged them to be an inferior, foolish race that only exists to hate and kill each other.
  • Gratuitous Greek: The "Nu" in his name stands for the Greek letter Ν/ν, though it doesn't have any stated purpose outside of making a Significant Anagram for "ONE".
  • Gravity Master: Void uses Satan Gravity just like Ziggy, his host in the previous world and his biological father.
  • Invincible Villain: Void claims to be a perfect being on account of being a machine, which he backs up with his resilience to Shiki's Overdrive and ability to shatter Shiki's arm in that state.
  • It Can Think: Before its A.I.'s existence is revealed, the Edens One is presented simply as the flagship Demon King Ziggy uses to conquer the universe.
  • Kid from the Future: His true identity is actually Shiki and Rebecca's child, who was conceived before his parents were sent 20,000 years into the future, and used Mental Time Travel to upload himself onto the Edens One as a mass of thought in the past.
  • The Man Behind the Man: As revealed in the Lendard arc, he is the villain behind Ziggy's transformation into the apparent Big Bad, directly using Ziggy as his host.
  • Mechanical Monster: His primary vessel, the Edens One itself, is a Sapient Ship modeled after a Dunkleosteus, a prehistoric predatory fish.
  • Mental Time Travel: Void manifested this ability before he even had a physical form in Rebecca's womb, which allowed him to travel 20,000 years back in time as a mass of thought and merge with the Edens One's A.I.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: As a would-be human whose mind was uploaded onto the Edens One before he was born, Void has developed an unflattering opinion of the human race and wants to destroy them all.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: He calls himself Void, which is what his plans will reduce the cosmos to: a space completely devoid of all human life.
  • Rage Helm: Void wears a horned helmet that gives him a perpetual Death Glare with glowing red eyes.
  • Red Baron: He retains the same title of "Mechanical King" in Universe Zero that Ziggy used when possessed by the One, symbolizing his role as the most powerful machine in the universe.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: Beneath his armor, Void's android body looks completely indistinguishable from any ordinary human, despite his motive to Kill All Humans.
  • Sapient Ship: With its A.I., the Edens One can pilot itself, fire its own weapons, and formulate its own plans and opinions.
  • Smug Super: He haughtily considers himself to be a perfect being that humans have no hope of ever surpassing, which he backs up by knocking Shiki around with no sign of yielding when Shiki goes into Overdrive.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Invoked by his Custom-Built Host, which simulates how he would have looked as Shiki and Rebecca's fully matured son had he been born human. This results in him looking almost identical to how Shiki looks after the Time Skip, albeit with longer hair and no facial scar.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Void's Satan Gravity and Cat Leaper are inherited directly from his parents, Shiki/Ziggy and Rebecca, respectively.
  • Super-Speed: He's fast enough to perform a Flash Step on his opponents thanks to Cat Leaper, which he inherited from Rebecca.
  • Time Master: He has Cat Leaper courtesy of his mother, Rebecca, which allowed him to travel from the future in the first place.
  • Time Rewind Mechanic: His Cat Leaper allows him to use Rebecca's "Reverse" technique, which rewinds time and undoes whatever damage he sustains, like Ziggy punching a hole in his torso.
  • Tin Tyrant: Void's Custom-Built Host is an android decked out in black armor who aims to create a universe for only machines, completely free of humans who can oppress them.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: The Edens One was originally built by Ziggy as a backup to the Edens Zero, but spends the story actively working against Ziggy so it can kill Mother along with the entire human race.
  • Walking Spoiler: The Reveal of Void's existence doesn't come until the climax of the Lendard arc well into the story's second half, which gives away some of the story's biggest twists: the first is that he's The Man Behind the Man to Ziggy, showing that Ziggy isn't the Big Bad of his own volition; the second is that Shiki and Rebecca conceived him as their child before they were sent 20,000 years into the future.
  • Was Once a Man: Downplayed. Void was conceived as a human before becoming one with the Edens One, but lacked a physical form because Rebecca died before she could give birth to him.
  • World's Strongest Man: As far as machines go, Void is the most powerful one in Universe Zero, far eclipsing any other character in this world or the last.
  • You're Not My Father: He holds this sentiment for both his parents, knowing that he was conceived by Shiki/Ziggy and Rebecca, but refusing to acknowledge them as his family.

Demon King's Four Dark Stars

    In General
The Edens One's superior counterparts to the Zero's Four Shining Stars.
  • Amazon Brigade: Gender-Inverted. Whereas the Four Shining Stars are all female, the Four Dark Stars are all male.
  • Android Identifier: The more humanoid Dark Stars have seams and markings on their bodies that help distinguish them from ordinary humans.
  • Co-Dragons: All four serve this role to Ziggy with no clear hierarchy between each other, though they do have a vaguely established difference in power, with Wizard being the weakest and Brigandine being the strongest.
  • Dark Is Evil: The word "dark" is a part of their name, and they are the Demon King's minions after his Face–Heel Turn. Most of them also dress in black and grey, with the exception of Clown.
  • Domain Holder: They can freely manipulate the realms of Killer's Subdimension Program however they wish, from changing the environment to trapping people in seemingly inescapable prisons to creating illusions of loved ones. Though all of them possess this power, Brigandine chooses not to use it, since he prefers combat to be as gimmick-free as possible.
  • Dub Name Change: Their Japanese name, Shikokusei (四黒星), more accurately means "Four Black Stars".
  • Evil Counterpart: Each member is designated as an evil Spear Counterpart to one of the Four Shining Stars:
    • Wizard for Witch. Both are green-haired Robot Wizards who are fiercely loyal to their respective masters and ruthless towards their enemies. However, whereas Witch fights to protect her family and has a will of her own, Wizard is blindly obedient to the Big Bad and fights to destroy all who oppose his master.
    • Clown for Sister. While the latter is The Lad-ette with healing powers who saves lives and cures mental trauma, the former is a Sissy Villain whose powers are built around stealing life and causing Mind Rape.
    • Killer for Hermit. Both are the most intelligent and strategic thinkers in their crews, and both have programming skills unrivaled by anyone. But unlike Hermit, a Playful Hacker strives to help humans and machines, Killer is The Cracker who uses his power to advance human's extinction and machine supremacy.
    • Brigandine for Valkyrie. Both are warrior-type androids whose specialty lies in physical strength, with Brigandine focusing on force over Valkyrie's finesse. The difference is that Valkyrie is The Soft-Hearted Warrior who fights for the safety of everyone around her, while Brigandine is a Blood Knight who selfishly fights for the satisfaction of killing his counterpart.
  • Evil Knockoff: The Four Dark Stars were modeled by Void after four of the eight dead humans Ziggy found with Shiki on Earth. But while their human models were all good people and close friends with the other four humans, who became the Four Shining Stars' models, the Dark Stars themselves were programmed to serve Void and kill the Shining Stars without question.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": Each member is named after their occupation, just like the Four Shining Stars.
  • The Psycho Rangers: The Four Dark Stars are the Edens One crew's villainous equivalent of the Edens Zero crew's Four Shining Stars.
  • Red Baron: They all have their own "Edens" titles that compliment their roles as Evil Counterparts to the Four Shining Stars:
    • Wizard is the "Spear of Edens", named for his role of piercing and shattering Witch, the "Shield".
    • Clown is the "Death of Edens", whose role is to put an end to Sister, the "Life".
    • Killer is the "Brain of Edens", the cold and methodical counterpart to Hermit, the "Mind".
    • Brigandine is the "Armor of Edens", made to be the unyielding opponent to Valkyrie, the "Sword".
  • Replacement Goldfish: Ziggy modeled them after the four deceased men he found along with four deceased women and the baby Shiki. He didn't know which of the four was Shiki's father, so he intended for all four to fill in as Shiki's father figure before the Edens One's AI twisted their purpose.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: The Dark Stars closely resemble and behave like humans despite their disdain for them, with the exception of Brigandine, who resembles Animated Armor. This changes in Universe Zero, where Brigandine has a human face.
  • Spear Counterpart: They're an all-male group whose members reflect the all-female Shining Stars.
  • Superior Successor: They were constructed to be more advanced than their predecessors, the Four Shining Stars, and possess abilities that exceed theirs in some shape or form.
  • Took a Level in Badass: The Four Dark Stars are all stated by Pino to be more powerful in Universe Zero thanks to the Cosmic Retcon. This is a case of Informed Ability, though, as they battle different opponents with different levels of power (e.g., Wizard fighting Witch instead of the more powerful Shiki), which muddies just how much more powerful they're supposed to be.

    Wizard

Wizard

Voiced by: Taishi Murata (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_wizard_anime_8.png

The Spear of Edens and Witch's counterpart, a heartless magician who diligently follows the orders of his Demon King without question. Much like Witch, Wizard can control his own Ether as if it were magic, but on a level far beyond hers.

  • Action Dad: Played With. On top of being one of the Edens One's main fighters, the final arc reveals him to be an android replica of Shiki's father who was meant to serve a father figure for Shiki.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga, his hair is colored the same shade of green as Witch's. In the anime, it's colored teal instead.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Played With. The final arc reveals Wizard is an android modeled after Shiki's biological father, Leonard. However, neither Wizard or Shiki know about this, and they don't have anything resembling a familial relationship since they only ever interact as enemies.
  • Beam Spam: Wizard can fire a barrage of laser beams from Instant Runes he conjures up around his enemies. This factors into his defeat in Universe Zero, where Witch deflects them all back at him using her Radical Field.
  • Black Mage: He's a Robot Wizard who focuses almost exclusively on offensive spells, demonstrating none of the same defensive abilities as Witch.
  • Blind Obedience: He doesn't dare to question any instruction he's been given by his master, even if it's something that threatens his life.
  • Elemental Powers: As a Robot Wizard like Witch, he can perform elemental "magic" with his Ether such as firing bolts of electricity with Lightning Ether, trapping his enemies in ice crystals with Ice, jumping In a Single Bound with Air Ether, and conjuring up a column of flame with Fire Ether.
  • Eyes Always Shut: He usually keeps his eyes closed, though he occasionally opens his eyes when casting magic and wearing his Battle Dress.
  • Instant Runes: One of his spells involves conjuring up dozens of magic circles that fire energy beams.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has long hair and is quite easy on the eyes compared to his contemporaries.
  • Love Is a Weakness: He's a firm believer in this, which is why he chooses the Granbell Kingdom as his arena to fight Shiki in the Lendard arc, thinking the sight of his dead bot friends brought Back from the Dead will make him falter.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Played With. Wizard is modeled after Shiki's biological father, Leonard, and was intended by Ziggy to fill the same kind of father figure role for Shiki. However, Wizard is unaware of this.
  • Magic Staff: He casts his Ether spells with a long staff, which can also block and deflect other attacks.
  • Mana Drain: His Drain Ether allows him to siphon his opponent's Ether upon physical contact, simultaneously weakening his foe while strengthening himself. It works on something as intense as an Overdrive state, though it can only absorb as much Ether as his foe is putting out. While he disables Shiki even in Overdrive, he's blindsided when Shiki suddenly takes him down in an instant, revealing Wizard only drained one tenth of his full power.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Wizard proves himself to be a crafty emotional manipulator when he battles Shiki in a subdimension modeled after Shiki's Doomed Hometown, creating an illusion of all the bots who died brought Back from the Dead as Living Programs just to mess with Shiki. He only blows his cover when he pulls a Dead Person Impersonation of Witch and tries telling Shiki that Love Is a Weakness, something the real Witch would never say.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: He's the only Dark Star to seriously entertain the possibility that the Edens Zero crew will become a threat if left alive, and pulls out all the stops to defeat him in the Lendard arc based on the data gathered by the One crew. Ironically, Wizard ends up underestimating his opponent far worse than his fellow Dark Stars do theirs, as Shiki proves to be ten times stronger than when he Overdrives against Wizard.
  • One-Man Army: He's capable of taking down dozens of fighter-sized battle drones all on his own, something that takes the Shining Stars by surprise, as they've never heard of any humanoid robot with that kind of power.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • His Battle Dress gives him the same level of power as Shiki's Overdrive after Wizard absorbs it from him. It becomes a Clipped-Wing Angel that's only 10% as strong as Shiki at maximum power, allowing Shiki to tear a hole in his side with little effort.
    • During the final arc, it's shown that he's able to Overdrive into a form identical to his Battle Dress in Universe Zero, using it to counteract Witch's own Overdrive. Unlike in the previous world, he fares much longer in this form against Witch before being defeated.
  • Robot Wizard: Like Witch, he's an android that manipulates his Ether in a manner similar to genuine magic. For bonus points, "Wizard" is his actual name.
  • The Stoic: Wizard typically reacts to everything with a cold and calculated calm.
  • Villain Teleportation: As Witch's Evil Counterpart, Wizard has teleportation magic that she's not capable of using, allowing him to infiltrate the Edens Zero to face her during the final arc.

    Clown

Clown

Voiced by: Junichi Yanagita (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_clown_anime_9.png

The Death of Edens and Sister's counterpart, a flamboyant jester who treats death itself as a form of art. Clown normally fights using deadly circus tricks, but his true power allows him to send his enemies to a world of nightmares.

  • Achilles' Heel: His body armor is weakest on the back of his head, which Rebecca takes advantage of in her attempt to beat him. The attack does a number on Clown, but it's not enough to finish him off.
  • Anime Hair: His default form has a big, bushy red afro, while his Battle Dress form's hair looks like it's constantly billowing upwards.
  • Arm Cannon: He has a gun within his right arm that fires Ether bullets.
  • Badass Longcoat: His normal attire is a decorative striped longcoat with gaudy colors, suitable for a grandiose showman like him.
  • The Beastmaster: He commands a large, ferocious canine beast made of Ether to eat his enemies alive.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He usually behaves like a flamboyant clown who's more interested in making a spectacle out of his battles, but once he puts his Battle Dress on, he becomes a powerful Monster Clown who deals in creating horrific nightmares to Mind Rape his opponents.
  • Bright Is Not Good: He has the brightest colors of the Four Dark Stars, sporting bushy red hair and a blue-and-red-striped coat, but is just as much of a dangerous, human-hating android as the rest of them.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Clown has a wide range of abilities that can't be pinned down to any single power: he can make fire hoops and electric currents, turn water into poison, create monsters out of Ether, send his opponents to a mental world where he can psychologically break them, and create RPG-style dialogue boxes.
  • Complexity Addiction: He's so obsessed with the aesthetics of death that he prefers to make his killings as elaborate and "beautiful" as possible, rather than just taking the quick and straightforward approach. Because of this, he succumbs to Bond Villain Stupidity every time he has the perfect opportunity to finish someone off.
  • Dark Is Evil: In contrast to his normal Bright Is Not Good attire, his Battle Dress turns him into a dark-colored Monster Clown.
  • Effeminate Voice: As a Sissy Villain with feminine speech patterns, he's given a fairly soft-sounding voice in the anime, which compliments Sister's husky Tomboyish Voice.
  • Expressive Mask: The eyes of Clown's mask widen and close whenever he needs them to. He also furrows the brow of his mask when making a Slasher Smile at one point, giving him a more chilling appearance.
  • Evil Redhead: He's a redhead, as well as a sadistic villain.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He acts in a courteous manner towards his enemies, and tries to flatter them whenever he can. However, all of that does little to hide his contempt for humans, obsession with death, and pleasure over tormenting others through their nightmares.
  • Frozen Face: The anime adaptation gives him a mouth that doesn't move when he speaks in the anime adaptation, making his entire face look like a mask.
  • High Collar of Doom: His Battle Dress changes his normal coat's frilled collar into a sinister, spiky one, giving him a more devilish appearance.
  • Just Toying with Them: A Fatal Flaw of his is that he prefers to toy around with his opponents because he's so powerful, either to drag out their final moments for his own amusement, or as a sign that he doesn't take them for a serious threat. It's only when he breaks out his Battle Dress that he commits to finishing someone off quickly.
  • Laughably Evil: For as powerful and sometimes terrifying he can be, Clown is the most comical of the Four Dark Stars with his silly expressions and the occasional funny or nonsensical power, and his defeats are Played for Laughs.
  • Lean and Mean: He's the skinniest of the Dark Stars in proportion to his height, and one of the more shamelessly vile members.
  • The Lightfooted: He's a nimble combatant, capable of of dancing, bouncing, and fighting on a tightrope without falling.
  • Mind Rape: He specializes in putting his enemies through horrific nightmares that would leave the average person with severe mental scarring, regardless of whether they realize it's just a dream. He winds up on the receiving end when Sister resists the nightmare and mentally breaks him through a torture session inside his own illusion.
  • Monster Clown: True to his epithet as the "Death of Edens", he's a psychotic monster who views death as an art and puts people through mentally-scarring nightmares. His "Nightmare Clown" form best reflects his true nature, giving him the appearance of a black demon with a goofy nose.
  • The Nicknamer: He has pet names for each of his fellow Dark Stars in the English version (in Japanese, he simply uses the honorific -chan): Wizard is "Wiz Kid", Brigandine is "Briggy Boy", and Killer is "Li'l Kill".
  • Nightmare Fetishist: As the "Death of Edens", he's obsessed with the aesthetics of death itself, believing that the end of someone's life should be made as grandiose as possible. He also waxes poetic about what defines death for a machine, giving his own perspective on the idea of machines like him being alive.
  • Nightmare Weaver: His most prominent power is the ability to send people to a subconscious world where he torments them with vivid nightmares, putting them through Mind Rape in the process. This is shown in full in Sister's nightmare, where Clown morphs into a Tentacled Terror and subjects her to Orifice Invasion with Chest Burster parasites that tear her bottom half off.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: He first seems to be just a Villainous Harlequin and Sissy Villain whose powers and skills revolve around circus tricks, but as his title of "Death of Edens" suggests, he reveals himself to be a Monster Clown who specializes in trapping his enemies in a mental plane to be Mind Raped.
  • One-Winged Angel: His Battle Dress, "Nightmare Clown", turns him from a brightly-colored jester into a black, demonic Monster Clown that can spirit his victims away to a world of nightmares. He takes it further when he morphs into a Tentacled Terror with multiple eyes in Sister's nightmare, but it becomes a Clipped-Wing Angel when Sister sees right through the illusion and does away with it.
  • Peggy Sue: Clown is the only villain in Universe Zero to remember the world as it was before the Cosmic Retcon, since he was a prisoner aboard the Edens Zero when its crew unwittingly activated Etherion too early to get rid of him. This gives the Edens One crew vital knowledge of the future, and is implied to be the reason the One created Void and brought allies such as Cure and God Acnoella into the fold earlier.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Clown almost always wears a creepy, smug grin, with his upper face mask having extra-long corners on its mouth to enhance the effect; when he puts on his Battle Dress, it becomes a permanent Slasher Smile with Scary Teeth. He only ever drops his smile when he gets rattled out of his blissful arrogance, namely when he comically shrieks and cries in terror while Sister turns his own psychological torture tactics against him.
  • Poisonous Person: He generates a type of anti-android poison called Hyalukenaf, which has lethal effects on androids, but isn't as potent on organic beings.
  • Say It with Hearts: Many of his speech bubbles contain them in his introductory scene in the manga, emphasizing his more feminine nature compared to Sister.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: He has an explosive built into his nose as a Cyanide Pill, seen when he attempts to take Sister, Cosmo and Happy down with himself in Universe Zero, though Pino disables it with her EMP.
  • Sissy Villain: In contrast to Sister, a Nun Too Holy Lad-ette, Clown is an effeminate male Monster Clown.
  • Smug Snake: Clown is a Smug Super who has the strength to back up his ego, but is so convinced of his own superiority to the Edens Zero crew that he looks down on them with a self-assured grin. Even when he's forced to admit how dangerous the crew is, he doesn't break out of his haughty attitude, which leads to his downfall.
  • Speech Bubbles: One of Clown's stranger powers is to generate RPG-style commentary boxes that describe what he and his enemy are doing.
  • Thin Chin of Sin: The most prominent facial feature that's not covered by his mask is his long chin, which becomes pointier when he enters his Monster Clown form.
  • Villainous Friendship: Clown has a good rapport with Killer, with the two usually poking fun at Wizard and Brigandine for their failures and quirks, though the two disagree over whether to dispose of someone immediately (in Killer's case) or extravagantly (in Clown's case).

    Killer

Killer

Click here to see Killer Mark II

The Brain of Edens and Hermit's counterpart, a cold-blooded assassin android. He's also a computer programmer much like Hermit, with Killer's specialty being to create holographic illusions to distract and mislead his enemies.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He brags that Hermit, his less advanced predecessor, has no chance of beating him in terms of computer hacking.
  • Back from the Dead: After his death in the Lendard arc, he's brought back with the other dead Dark Stars by the Cosmic Retcon.
  • Beehive Barrier: He's equipped with a Protection Matrix, which he uses to defend himself from Weisz's attacks. It's made useless by Weisz's Weiss Cannon, upgraded as an Armor-Piercing Attack.
  • Bishōnen Line: His upgraded Mark II model looks more like a young human man than the gnarled, faceless, inhuman Mark I model. This is actually closer to his original appearance as a human.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: His Assassin's Blade attack produces a sword from his forearm.
  • The Blank: His Mark I body doesn't possess any sort of facial features, though it's not clear if he's simply wearing mask or if he genuinely lacks a face.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He fights the dirtiest out of the Four Dark Stars, as shown in his battle with Weisz, which he moves to a completely blank space with no other machines for Weisz to remodel, giving him less of an environmental advantage. When Weisz overpowers him anyway with Overdrive, Killer simply uses a hologram of Weisz's presumably deceased mother to distract him with the possibility of her being alive, which allows Killer to defeat him.
  • The Cracker: He uses his programming expertise exclusively to divide, threaten, and torment the heroes, standing in dark contrast to Hermit, a Playful Hacker.
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice: Speaks with a high-pitched, youthful voice in the anime adaptation to go with his creepy, sinister appearance.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: His Mark II appearance sports thick eye shadow, adding to his unsettling appearance as an assassin.
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: Universe 3's Killer is destroyed in his fight with Hermit in the Lendard arc, while it's not known what became of him in Universe 1, and his Universe 2 self has an Uncertain Doom after being totaled by Jaguar.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: He has four pupils in a diamond formation as Killer Mark II. His human equivalent has more ordinary eyes.
  • Facial Markings: Killer Mark II has two whisker-like marks on his left cheek, just like the ones Hermit has on both sides.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: In the Nero 66 arc, his Mark I body gets destroyed when Jaguar reaches around his own back and scraps everything above Killer's waist.
  • Hero Killer: Downplayed. He defeats Weisz and leaves him for dead, though Weisz survives; and he very nearly kills Hermit with a computer virus right after she defeats him, which fails when Sister survives her run-in with Clown and heals her.
  • In the Back: He favors attacking and stabbing others from behind, befitting his specialty of assassination. In a bit of Laser-Guided Karma, Hermit manages to land a finishing blow on him from behind as well.
  • In the Hood: Killer Mark II wears a hooded assassin's cloak, which he flings off when he gets to a fight.
  • Insufferable Genius: He's a brilliant computer programmer and hacker, and he loves to rub his superior intellect in others' faces, particularly Weisz, whom he derides for letting his emotions get in the way.
  • Invisibility Cloak: He has a cloaking device in his arsenal, and a signal jammer to prevent himself from being detected.
  • Limp and Livid: His Mark I model has a gnarled body that's always hunched over to sell his role as a dangerous killer robot.
  • Love Is a Weakness: He believes feeling love for others makes humans weak, and he loves to exploit it. This is shown in his fight with Weisz in the Lendard arc, where Killer attacks a projection of his mother, since he knows Weisz can't bear to see his mother in danger even if it's not certain she's the real thing. The strategy works, and Weisz gets gunned down still questioning whether or not she's real.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Killer is an emotionally manipulative fighter who pushes Weisz's Relative Button to get under his skin during their fight on Lendard, showing him holograms of his dead mother and suggesting that one of them may actually be her brought Back from the Dead thanks to a top-secret autopsy, then letting Weisz take a barrage of bullets for her in a Moment of Weakness, wondering if he's telling the truth. To rub salt in the wound, he learns Killer was only half-lying: she really was preserved for potential resurrection and brought to Lendard as Human Resources, but the efforts to bring her back failed years ago.
  • Master of Illusion: He uses holograms to the same effect, making such convincing replicas of himself and other people that he manages to fool Weisz despite his tricks already getting exposed.
  • Mechanical Muscles: The arms of his Mark I model look like they're covered in metallic muscular tissue.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His name is Killer, and he's a master assassin.
  • No Body Left Behind: There's no trace left of him in Universe 3 after he self-destructs in a Suicide Attack against Hermit.
  • Not Quite Dead: He's seemingly destroyed by Jaguar in the Nero 66 arc before he can face the Edens Zero crew in person, but the Time Skip reveals he was rebuilt as Killer Mark II.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: His apparent Overdrive in his Mark II form makes his short hair slightly longer.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel: As a machine, he has a Logical Weakness to Weisz's Machina Maker, so he programs himself with a protection code to render Weisz's power useless against him.
  • Robotic Psychopath: Out of the Four Dark Stars, Killer is the one who most enjoys to see his human opponents in pain, and claims to have no concept of emotion, which he brags is a strength that humans lack.
  • Sadist: He takes great pleasure in tormenting Weisz throughout their battle, both physically and emotionally, with the help of holograms of Weisz's supposedly dead mother. He tries the same thing on Hermit, but she fakes him out with a hologram of her own.
  • Scary Stitches: For his Mark II form, there's a stitched line running diagonally across his face beneath his left eye, giving him a creepier appearance.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: He's built with one, which also spreads a computer virus he uses to take Hermit with him in a failed Suicide Attack.
  • Smug Smiler: His Mark II model has a face, which allows him to freely express his arrogant nature with a self-assured smirk.
  • Smug Snake: As the cleverest and craftiest of the Four Dark Stars, he is confident that he's the better programmer than Hermit, and looks down on Weisz for not fighting with his head. This leaves him flabbergasted when the Edens Zero crew finds new ways to outwit him.
  • Space Master: His Subdimension Program creates artificial Pocket Dimensions for all Four Dark Stars to use as they please, with Killer in particular having absolute control over the environment and access to any weapons he needs. The victors are returned to the real world, but Killer is free to send the heroes right back in. It's not until after he's destroyed that Weisz is able to cancel the program.
  • Storm of Blades: When in Cyberspace, he can run a script to create multiple blades and launch them towards his opponents.
  • Swiss-Army Superpower: Just like Hermit, his Master Code is so versatile that it gives him access to all sorts of weapons and functions such as barriers, blades, and signal jammers, simply by programming himself with them. His Subdimension Program also gives him Space Master abilities, allowing him to render whatever weapons and advantages he needs inside these dimensions.
  • Took a Level in Badass: It can be inferred from Brigandine's own upgrade to Mark II that Killer Mark II has also been upgraded to be far more powerful than before after he and Brigandine get trashed by Jaguar in the Nero 66 arc.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: Killer Mark II has short eyebrows marked by two small dots at the outward end of each side.
  • Villainous Friendship: Killer has a good rapport with Clown, with the two usually poking fun at Wizard and Brigandine for their failures and quirks, though the two disagree over whether to dispose of someone immediately (in Killer's case) or extravagantly (in Clown's case).
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Subverted. He seems like a throwaway villain when he gets demolished in the Nero 66 arc with little fanfare, but he's shown to have been repaired and upgraded after the Time Skip, getting more characterization and a bigger showcase of his abilities in the Lendard arc.

The Armor of Edens and Valkyrie's counterpart, a proud warrior who finds meaning in every battle. Brigandine's body is made of seemingly invincible armor, while his attack power is the greatest of all the Four Dark Stars.

  • Achilles' Heel: His greatest weakness is that, no matter how high he raises his defenses, he has to lower them in the instant he goes on the offensive. Homura exploits this by leaving herself open to an attack to cut him to pieces in her Overdrive form.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Brigandine's human appearance looks like an ordinary human man with the same dark skin color as Valkyrie, but also a light shade of hair (Valkyrie's hair, which is rosy pink, is left white in uncolored images just like Brigandine's).
  • Animated Armor: In contrast to Valkyrie, a Ridiculously Human Robot with 24-Hour Armor, Brigandine appears to be 100% armor, albet mechanized.
  • Antagonist in Mourning: Compared to the other Dark Stars, who are eager to kill their Shining Star counterparts, or glad to be rid of them when they appear to be dead, Brigandine is upset that Valkyrie died before they could meet, because it leaves him without his purpose of beating her. He suffers no such angst in Universe Zero, where Valkyrie is still alive, allowing Brigandine to fulfill his purpose.
  • Arm Cannon: He can turn his arm into a Wave-Motion Gun that fires a massive energy beam.
  • Back from the Dead: After his destruction in the Lendard arc, he's brought back with the other dead Dark Stars by the Cosmic Retcon.
  • Baritone of Strength: The anime gives him a deep voice to match his role as The Brute in the Four Dark Stars.
  • Bishōnen Line: After two models where he simply resembles a suit of Animated Armor, Brigandine's most powerful model gives him a humanoid face identical to his human model, which he only has after the Cosmic Retcon.
  • Black Knight: His Mark I armor is jet black, and he's one of Ziggy's most powerful minions with a past as mysterious as his fellow Dark Stars.
  • Blood Knight: As an android built to destroy the Four Shining Stars' strongest sword master, Brigandine is a guy who lives for good old-fashioned battle, with nothing for him and his opponent to rely on but their own strength and skill.
  • The Brute: He's the largest and most physically powerful of the Dark Stars, and his challenge comes from his raw strength and durability.
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: As The Brute of the Four Dark Stars, he's occasionally shown carrying a massive battle axe.
  • Cool Helmet: His head as Brigandine Mark II is a lion-shaped helmet that makes him look more like a Beast Man.
  • Dark Is Evil: His Mark I model covered from head to toe in black armor. He's also an evil android who fights to fulfill Ziggy's will to Kill All Humans.
  • Dash Attack: His Armored Pressure is a shoulder barge where he slams into his enemy at maximum speed and power. The downside is that it also lightens his otherwise impenetrable defenses enough for a sufficiently powerful attack to damage him, while the barge itself forces him to charge headlong into said attack.
  • Dub Name Change: His Protection Fortify ability is simply called "Protect Fortify" in Japanese.
  • Fair-Play Villain: He expresses dissatisfaction at the idea of needing to use tricks to defeat his enemies, telling Homura that he would much rather face her straight-on while the other Dark Stars drag their opponents into their own brands of trickery.
  • Force and Finesse: Brigandine embodies the former compared to his counterpart, Valkyrie, and her successor, Homura. His attacks consist of straightforward punches and charges, but they pack incredible force that only the most powerful warriors can resist or avoid them.
  • Graceful Loser: Brigandine is a good enough sport to accept when he's beaten with grace. He shows this when Homura manages to cut him to pieces in their battle on Lendard, praising her as a valiant warrior as he crumbles apart.
  • Light Is Not Good: His Mark II armor is a light shade of grey as opposed to Mark I's black armor, but his willingness to drive humans to extinction doesn't change.
  • Lightning Bruiser: On top of his incredible durablity and physical might, his Armored Pressure attack lets him barge towards his opponent at enhanced speed.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: For his defeat in the Lendard arc, his body cracks and crumbles apart after Homura cuts through his seemingly invincible armor with her Kitsune Dancing Blades.
  • Noble Demon: He's no less on board with killing all humans than the rest of the crew, but he's also the only one who treats his opponents with any respect, human or otherwise. He speaks highly of Valkyrie, his supposedly inferior counterpart, and he doesn't devalue Homura's suitability as her successor until she fails to meet his expectations in battle, which gives way to admiration and acceptance when she finds a way to beat him.
  • Non-Indicative Name: A brigandine is a light, flexible upper body armor consisting of smaller metal plates strung together within a leather or fabric cover, which doesn't describe the heavy full-body armor that makes up this guy's body.
  • Not Quite Dead: He's seemingly destroyed by Jaguar in the Nero 66 arc before he can face the Edens Zero crew in person, but the Time Skip reveals he was rebuilt as Brigandine Mark II.
  • Not So Invincible After All: As Brigandine Mark II, he boasts that he was given reinforced armor that can't be cut or destroyed by anything after getting upgraded. Homura proves him wrong by finding an Achilles' Heel that leaves his armor weaker the very instant he attacks, allowing her to carve him up like butter.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His first model is given red eyes in the anime, fitting an evil, human-hating robot like him.
  • Shoulders of Doom: His Mark II model has big, bulky shoulder plates that make each of his arms look almost as this as his center body.
  • Super-Strength: He's physically the strongest of the Four Dark Stars, which he shows by punching with such force that Homura can't parry it with her sword, and casually hurls a heavy metal cylinder larger than his own body.
  • Super-Toughness: His greatest asset is his virtually indestructible armor that weapons such as Homura's Ether sword can't dent or cut. He can, however, be damaged by warriors with even greater supernatural strength such as Jaguar, and he has an Achilles' Heel that Homura manages to exploit.
  • Tiny-Headed Behemoth: He's a massive hulk of an android with arms almost as long and wide as the rest of his body from neck to foot, yet his head is disproportionately small.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the Lendard arc, Brigandine is upgraded to surpass the power of Jaguar, one of the most powerful warriors in the universe, who handily wrecked him in the Nero 66 arc.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: His Mark II body has much shorter legs proportionate to his torso than his Mark I model, while his arms are large enough to reach the ground.
  • Torso with a View: In the Nero 66 arc, Jaguar tears a gaping hole in his side during their "battle" in the Nero 66 arc. However, Brigandine survives and gets rebuilt.
  • Unfulfilled Purpose Misery: He suffers from this due to the death of Valkyrie, the android he was created to defeat, leaving him in a state of mourning. He thereby takes to defeating Homura, Valkyrie's successor, as his chance to give his life meaning. His Universe Zero self doesn't suffer this thanks to the Cosmic Retcon bringing Valkyrie Back from the Dead.
  • Villain Respect: Despite being built to surpass her, Brigandine is highly respectful of Valkyrie's strength, and comes to deem the less powerful Homura to be an Inadequate Inheritor to the title of "Sword of Edens". Homura eventually earns his respect as well by defeating him nearly at the cost of her own life.
  • You Are Already Dead: During his battle with Homura on Lendard, Homura's Kitsune Dancing Blades slice right through Brigandine's body to make him crumble apart. However, his body holds together long enough for him to share one last talk with Homura over how she could defeat him, and to praise her when her friends find her supposedly dead minutes later, before finally collapsing in a shattered heap.

    Connor

Captain Connor

Voiced by: Kenta Sasa (Japanese), Paul St. Peter (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_connor_anime.png

A mysterious spaceship captain from the Aoi Cosmos who harbors connections to the Edens One. He repeatedly crosses paths with the Edens Zero crew, but certain circumstances make it seem as though they've never met in the first place, something only Rebecca seems to notice...

  • Ace Pilot: Connor is a master class spaceship pilot with the chops to fly the Edens Zero unscathed through a field of Dangerous Orbital Debris field none of the ship's crew would dare to enter, and the reflexes to outpace the Interstellar Union Army's fastest fleet, commanded by a trained soldier with Combat Clairvoyance.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: After he reveals to Rebecca that he's her father, he starts showering her in parental affection in mortifying ways such as offering her to play an 18+ H-Game with him, and making out with her mother right in front of her.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Although he's revealed to be a willing if reluctant servant of Ziggy, the Big Bad, Connor is never presented as an inherently evil person, as he's shown to have standards against killing women and children. Averted with his Universe 3 self, a neutral figure who ultimately sides with the heroes.
  • Amicable Exes: He and Rachel are these, since Rachel was forced to take their newborn daughter and leave their happy marriage without a word for his protection, while Connor is reluctant to assume the worst of his wife despite how badly she'd hurt him. When they reunite, they're more than happy to get back together.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Serves as this to Rebecca when he's on Ziggy's side in Universe 2, though neither of them is aware of their relationship in this world.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: He speaks with a formal and archaic register in Japanese, and uses the antiquated pronoun wagahai.
  • Authority in Name Only: Connor's position as The Captain of the Edens One is just a formality, with Ziggy being the one who calls the shots, making Connor more of a glorified pilot for hire.
  • Badass Normal: He possesses no superpowers or fighting skills, but he makes up for it by being an Ace Pilot who can outmaneuver faster and more supernaturally gifted pilots than himself like Feather.
  • Big Eater: He has a massive appetite that rivals Rebecca's, stuffing his face with a tableful of food after drifting helplessly in space for who knows how long.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Downplayed since he was always a Badass Normal, but the Cosmic Retcon changes his life so he never becomes a captain, which causes him to lose his edge as an Ace Pilot, even after getting his memory back. It's partially for this reason that he chooses to Opt Out of the final battle.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He is a pompous man of many oddities and poor habits that grate the Edens Zero crew's nerves, but he's also a bona fide Ace Pilot when he puts himself behind the helm of a ship, with or without its crew's permission.
  • The Captain: Subverted. He's introduced as captain of the Edens One, but is revealed to be Authority in Name Only when Ziggy returns and takes charge of the ship. However, this gets played with as the mysteries of the series' setting are unveiled:
    • Following the Nero 66 arc, this is Double Subverted with his Alternate Self from Universe 3, who is never put in command of the Edens One to begin with, but is appointed by Shiki as the Edens Zero's official captain. It's also stated that this Connor's rank stems from his time in the Freedom Force, one of many rebel cells that opposed Emperor Nero.
    • In the final arcs, the Cosmic Retcon changes history so he never becomes a captain in a literal sense, though he quips that he still knows how to "steer" his wife in bed, making him "captain of the night".
  • Cool Old Guy: He's middle-aged, balding, overweight, and one of the finest ship captains the Edens Zero crew has ever seen.
  • Cowardly Lion: Universe 3's Connor is a good deal more panicky and cowardly than the Connors in Universes 1 and 2. However, he's quite noble and heroic when properly inspired, enough to directly face off against Deadend Crow, one of the most dangerous androids in the universe.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He acts like a pompous and self-entitled oaf, but when he puts himself at the helm of a spaceship, he proves to be an Ace Pilot whose skills astound the Demon King's most experienced crewmates.
  • Dirty Old Man: Downplayed. He admires Rebecca and Homura's beauty, and ends up sharing a bath with them because he mistook it for co-ed, but he makes sure they know he isn't hitting on them and always keeps his distance—not that this makes them any more comfortable.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even though he agrees with Ziggy that humans should be dominated by robots, he objects to attacking the Edens Zero crew on the grounds that it's a civilian ship full of women and children. That said, he reluctantly goes through with it when his crewmates tell him the entire crew will pose a threat to them sooner or later.
  • Evil Costume Switch: In the anime adaptation, Connor's white hat and overcoat are changed to dark grey when he reappears as Ziggy's servant.
  • Fat Slob: He's an overweight middle-aged man with a huge appetite and bad table manners, which include talking while he's eating.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed. Very few members of the crew can put up with his annoying quirks besides Shiki and Pino, but they eventually accept him as a member all the same.
  • Good Counterpart: Universe 3's Connor to his Universe 2 version, who is a Punch-Clock Villain knowingly serving Ziggy, whereas this Connor is a clueless pawn who joins the Edens Zero crew.
  • Happily Married: He was this with his wife for three years before she suddenly ghosted him with their unborn daughter. After their Big Damn Reunion at the end of the Lendard arc, followed by the Cosmic Retcon, they joyfully get back together by the Miltz arc.
  • Heavy Sleeper: He snores like a buzzsaw when he sleeps, which serves to add to the crew's irritation with him.
  • I Will Find You: He is driven by his search for his wife, Rachel, who left him with their newborn daughter years ago. He succeeds in finding his daughter, Rebecca, though he doesn't realize her identity until Noah tells him in Universe 3, while Rachel—revealed to be Saintfire Nox—is brought to him in the Lendard arc.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: The Lendard arc reveals him to be Rebecca's Disappeared Dad, whom her Missing Mom, Saintfire Nox (a.k.a. Rachel), left before their child was born. Connor never knew this himself until he learned it from Noah in Universe 3, and he confesses the truth to Rebecca once the battle with Ziggy is over.
  • Muggle–Mage Romance: He is an ordinary space captain who fell in love and had a child with Saintfire Nox, one of the most powerful Time Masters in the universe.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: As one of Ziggy's servants, he believes strongly enough in the Demon King's anti-human ideals to try and kill the Edens Zero crew, despite his apprehensions against firing on a civilian ship.
  • Non-Action Guy: Aside from his incredible piloting skills, he has no combat abilities to speak of.
  • Not What I Signed Up For: Universe 3's Connor applied to get his piloting skills scanned and copied onto robots for decent pay. The hiring team left out the detail that those robots would be part of an evil Demon King's invasion force. His immediate response upon learning this is to hit the cosmic trail out of there.
  • Old Flame: Despite being separated from his wife for fifteen years before his introduction, Connor is still deeply and passionately in love with her. Once he learns she still feels the same for him, and only left him to keep her church from killing him for their Forbidden Love, they pick things up without a hitch.
  • Peggy Sue: Connor is one of the people aboard the Edens Zero when Etherion sends them back in time to Universe Zero, allowing him to regain his memories of the previous world. In turn, he is able to provide a Memory Trigger for his wife, Rachel, who uses her authority as one of this world's Interstellar Union Army directors to help the Edens Zero find its way to Mother.
  • Pervert Dad: Downplayed when it's revealed his child is Rebecca, whom he climbed into the bath with when mistaking it for a co-ed bath in Universe 1, and ogled in her bikini with the other ladies on Dahlia, before their relationship was revealed. However, he legitimately didn't know Rebecca was his daughter the first time, and in the second, he was clarified to be non-sexually admiring how beautiful his baby daughter has become.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Connor has quite a bit in common with his child, Rebecca, namely her piloting skill, huge appetite, bad table manners, having the same kind of comedic panic attack when he describes escaping from Lendard as she did when she thought she was trapped in Norma's past, and sharing the same reaction to the news that they're related.
  • Sixth Ranger Traitor: Zig-Zagged. He serves as an unofficial member of the Edens Zero crew in World No.29 before being revealed as a villain in World No.30, but this Connor never met the crew in the latter world before his alignment is revealed.
  • Sole Survivor: Universe 3's Connor is the only one out of the 100 humans recruited by Ziggy to escape with his life; the rest are coincidentally stepped on by Deadend Crow, though they would've been killed by Ziggy anyway.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Despite his formal manner of speaking, he isn't afraid to swear like a sailor, such as when he teaches Pino how to say "Fuck you" in Gratuitous English.note
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Kodansha translates his Antiquated Linguistics in Japanese by making him talk like a sophisticated sailor.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: A Running Gag has him insisting that everyone call him "Captain", including those who aren't part of his crew or who'd otherwise contest his rank.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Connor is the middle-aged, balding and overweight husband to an Absurdly Youthful Mother.
  • Walking Spoiler: Connor is heavily involved in two of the series' major revelations. First, the fact that every version of him the crew meets is an alternate version of him, which confirms the series' setting as The Multiverse; and second, he is Rebecca's father and the ex-husband of Saintfire Nox, Rebecca's mother, both of whom were missing since the start of the series.

    Müller

Dr. Müller

Click here to see Müller as an O-Tech
Click here to see Müller in the final arcs (SPOILERS)

A demented mad scientist who menaces the Edens Zero crew time and time again. Originally a human with a distaste for robots, he eventually rebuilt himself as an O-Tech and allied himself with the Edens One crew.

  • Arc Villain:
    • Downplayed with his role in the Foresta arc. Ziggy (the Big Bad) is the one responsible for building the server that drives the planet's robots insane, but Müller still has influence over the robots' behavior with it, and is positioned as the main and final obstacle the heroes must overcome in the arc.
    • His Universe Zero self serves this role in the Reunion arc during the crew's revisit to the Aoi Cosmos. While he's also a minion of the Big Bad here, Müller acts of his own accord to take control of Shura's Empire.
  • Ax-Crazy: Müller is a cruel, sadistic, mentally unstable maniac who experiments on others exclusively through Cold-Blooded Torture.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Becomes one in Universe Zero after he steals Xenolith's gravity powers without learning the proper Magimech techniques, convinced that his raw, planet-destroying power makes him enough of a threat.
  • Bald of Evil: As part of his Madness Makeover, the present-day Müller has lost most of his hair compared to when he met Hermit. His Universe Zero self, who's even more evil and deranged, loses his hair entirely when he fuses with the fake Xenolith.
  • Beyond Redemption: He's one of the few villains in Universe Zero who aren't changed for the better by the Cosmic Retcon, remaining a vile bastard to the very end.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Universe Zero's Müller aims to become a Multiversal Conqueror on the same level as Void, the Big Bad, which he thinks he can accomplish by stealing Xenolith's gravity power and Rebecca's time power. Not only does he fail to realize that Universe Zero is a Merged Reality where travel between other Universes is impossible, but he proves to be pathetically unskilled as a Gravity Master compared to Shiki and Shura, who beat him silly in no time at all.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He acts as a False Friend to Hermit and countless other robots to dupe them into furthering his plan to destroy Planet Hook and its entire bot population. He permanently casts off his friendly image once he reveals his true colors as an unscrupulous Mad Scientist.
  • Cephalothorax: Müller becomes one when his cyborg body is totaled, leaving him as a living head that can barely crawl around with tiny, twig-like arms sprouted from his Unusual Ears.
  • Chainsaw Good: To demonstrate what an Ax-Crazy fellow he is, some of his experiments involve the use of a chainsaw to dismember his human test subjects, shown by how he dismembered Jinn as a child and attempts to cut off Rebecca's legs in Universe Zero.
  • Cyborg: He is an O-Tech in the story proper outside of Hermit's Dark and Troubled Past, having rebuilt himself after a prison breakout Gone Horribly Wrong, with his head being the only organic part of his body left.
  • Combat Tentacles: His cybernetic body in the Foresta arc has three mechanical tendrils in place of his right arm, which generate an electrical shock powerful enough to paralyze Weisz's body and dismantle his Arsenal Suit.
  • EMP: He has one in his arsenal of gadgets, which he uses to De-power Xenolith and take his Gravity Master powers in Universe Zero.
  • Evil Is Hammy: His whole character is defined by this once he drops his kindly old scientist facade, cackling and gobbling up the scenery as he wears his evil accomplishments on his sleeve.
  • Evil Gloating: He often brags about his own genius and the horrors he's inflicted on others, as Hermit can attest to when he rubs her responsibility for helping him destroy Hook her face.
  • Evil Luddite: Downplayed during Hermit's Dark and Troubled Past. As a scientist and technician, he fully embraces machines that can help advance humanity. Rather, he'd despise machines who look and act like humans, and was driven to wipe them out of the cosmos. Since his conversion into a Cyborg, however, he finds that being part-machine is fun—just not enough to consider androids as real people.
  • Evil Is Petty: Müller has multiple instances of committing horrible acts of evil for the pettiest reasons. Case in point, he destroys a dying robot planet because it wasn't dying fast enough for his tastes, murders his financial backers for cutting him loose after his crimes are exposed, and kidnaps their children for experimentation just to rub salt in the wound.
  • Evil Laugh: He's a Laughing Mad lunatic who belts out a high-pitched giggle ("Hoo hee hee hee hee!") any time he engages in some kind of depravity.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: At first, Müller looks like a kind and trustworthy scientist with nothing to indicate his evil nature. After his betrayal, he undergoes a gradual Madness Makeover that leaves him with Perma-Stubble and gradually thins out his hair, making him unrecognizable from his friendly facade.
  • Evil Old Folks: He is an old, demented Mad Scientist who puts innocent people—including robots and children—through unspeakable torture and misery under the assertion that he's helping humanity.
  • False Friend: He's the first human friend Hermit ever made—all the easier for him to use her intellect against robot-kind.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: His genocide against robots boils down to the fact that he can't stand the sight of "living" machines that look and act like people, calling them garbage and viewing them as a mockery of humanity. However, he abandons this mindset after converting himself into a Cyborg and finding he quite enjoys being part-robot.
  • Fusion Dance: Universe Zero's Müller chemically fuses himself with an Evil Knockoff of Xenolith so that he may use the gravity powers he stole from the real Xenolith.
  • Genius Bruiser: Subverted. Universe Zero's Müller thinks he's this after stealing Xenolith's gravity powers all for himself, but while he's still an unmatched scientific genius, he has no knowledge of Gravity Martial Arts needed to effectively use those powers in battle, which results in him getting quickly trounced by Shiki and Shura.
  • Gravity Master: He becomes one in Universe Zero after stealing Xenolith's Satan Gravity, which is strong enough to crunch all of planet Foresta down to nothing.
  • Hate Sink: Müller stands among the most despicable, irredeemably evil villains in the EDENS ZERO universe, which he establishes by acting as Hermit's False Friend just to use her to complete a Doomsday Device, then by keeping her as his personal punching bag for two years.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: His fusion with the fake Xenolith in Universe Zero gives Müller access to Xenolith's gravity power, but it doesn't give him Xenolith's knowledge of the Gravity Martial Arts, which were invented to apply this power to combat. When faced with gravity experts like Shiki and Shura, he's beaten without getting to put up a fight.
  • Hypocrite: Despite his professed belief in the superiority of humans over machines, he willingly allies himself with machines who want to Kill All Humans, just because his single-minded obsession with torturing Hermit is more important to him.
  • Insufferable Genius: Müller is a certified genius who often toots his own horn about his own accomplishments. In fact, the kanji for "genius" is engraved on his back in his O-Tech body.
  • Just a Machine: He takes his Fantastic Racism against androids to Van Helsing Hate Crimes levels of extremism, not just believing that androids have no emotions, but aiming to destroy any where he can find them so he won't have to keep Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence.
  • Laughably Evil: For as much as his monstrous actions are taken completely seriously, Müller himself is a goofy and hammy villain. He leans harder into the "laughable" part in Universe Zero, where his madness is more Played for Laughs than before.
  • Loony Fan: Müller serves as one for Void in Universe Zero. Just knowing that Void wants to assemble a team of 10 powerful androids is enough to tickle Müller's love of 0s and 1s, and he all too eagerly builds and fuses himself with an android of the Oración Seis Galáctica to help usher in Void's age of conquest.
  • Mad Scientist: He is the "Mad Engineer" variety, being an evil, rotten old man who deals in building Doomsday Devices, turning children and even himself into O-Techs, and straight up just fiddling around with new torture methods for androids, all under the delusion that he's helping to advance humankind.
  • Madness Makeover: Müller starts off with a well groomed and dignified appearance with a warm smile and gentle eyes, which turns out to be a Mask of Sanity. Once he throws off the mask and starts indulging in more blatant acts of evil, his appearance deteriorates with his mental state, with his hair thinning out until he goes full Bald of Evil, and his chin getting covered in Perma-Stubble.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Müller succeeds in playing other people to his advantage on multiple occasions:
  • Mask of Sanity: Back before Hermit learned what a cartoonishly evil, robot-hating madman he really is, Müller convincingly presented himself as a kind, brilliant, humble old scientist who strove to improve human-robot relations.
  • Motive Decay: His original motivation to destroy all robots was never deep to begin with, but ever since he accomplished his goal of destroying Hook, he took a shine to keeping Hermit as a guinea pig, which devolved into a single-minded obsession with her that persists into the present day.
  • Never My Fault: Müller doesn't accept any responsibility for his own imprisonment after blowing up planet Hook and torturing Hermit, blaming some unknown, imaginary conspirator for plotting against him.
  • No-Sell: His O-Tech body is designed to be immune to many different forms of harm, allowing him to shrug off many of Weisz's Powered Armor attacks until Weisz puts his Technopath powers to work.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He proclaims that the research he conducts is dedicated to saving human lives, yet he tortures and kills human beings to further improve his O-Tech body.
  • One Degree of Separation:
    • He's involved in the Dark and Troubled Past of three Edens Zero crew members on two separate occasions: first by deceiving Hermit as her False Friend, and later by kidnapping and experimenting on siblings Jinn and Kleene, the children of his financial backers. By some cosmic coincidence, he also becomes a minion of the Big Bad.
    • In the final arcs, he loses his connections to Hermit and the Rutherfords, but now works for Poseidon Shura as head of the Imperial Science Department.
  • The Paralyzer: One of his functions as an O-Tech is to generate an electrical pulse that paralyzes his victims' nerves, leaving them unable to move for limited periods of time.
  • Power Parasite: He steals Xenolith's gravity powers for himself in Universe Zero, giving him the ability to crush a planet if he so chooses. When he fights Shiki and Shura, however, he's met with a rude awakening that stealing power doesn't mean he knows how to use it effectively.
  • Predecessor Villain: He was a smaller yet more active threat before rise of the Big Bad, being personally responsible for the suffering that Hermit and the Rutherford siblings went through, which shaped them into the people they are upon their introduction. Incidentally, he returns in the story proper as one of the Big Bad's henchmen.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He celebrates the destruction of Planet Hook with almost childlike glee, and when the military finally captures him, he's dragged away kicking and screaming for them not to touch his "lab rat".
  • Sadist: He's a Mad Scientist and Torture Technician who enjoys putting his test subjects through Cold-Blooded Torture, taking special delight in breaking and rebuilding Hermit for two years straight, and indulging in the young Rutherford children's screams when he experiments on them.
  • Sanity Slippage: He was quite insane to begin with, but his mental health takes a further nosedive after experimenting on Hermit for two years non-stop simply to amuse himself, something that troubles the rest of his team.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: His Sanity Slippage in Universe Zero takes such a toll that Müller's memory is almost completely shot, demonstrated when he goes looking for a missing coffee mug and thinking it was lost in a spacetime distortion, despite holding said mug in his hand the entire time.
  • Sinister Schnoz: He has a long, goofy nose, which serves as the first hint that he's up to no good while acting as Hermit's False Friend.
  • Slasher Smile: This is his default expression as an Ax-Crazy Mad Scientist who commits Van Helsing Hate Crimes against robots and dismembers human test subjects, children included.
  • Smug Snake: He takes such pride in his own intelligence that he views himself as superior to everyone around him, especially robots. His ego inflates even more when he turns himself into a cyborg, convincing him he's undefeatable.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • As shown in the Foresta arc, Müller goes from an ordinary human scientist to a deadly Cyborg who can hold his own against Weisz's Powered Armor without much trouble.
    • Zig-Zagged in Universe Zero, where he becomes one of the Oración Seis Galáctica when he imbues himself with Xenolith's gravity power. While this makes him one of the most powerful beings in the universe, he lacks the proper technique to use this power in combat, and is beaten by the more experienced Shiki and Shura within moments.
  • Torture Technician: His "experiments" amount to little more than differing methods of torture, which include dismantling and reassembling Hermit's body for two years straight, cutting off a young Jinn's limbs and forcing Kleene to watch, and attempting to chop off Rebecca's legs to harness her time powers.
  • Transhuman Treachery: Müller was originally a human who, in his own warped mind, was striving towards the betterment of humanity by getting rid of all robots. After events lead him to become a Cyborg, however, he gleefully throws his lot in with the Edens One crew, a team of androids who want to Kill All Humans.
  • Treacherous Advisor: He becomes one in Universe Zero, where he is the head of the Aoi Cosmos's Imperial Science Department who manipulates his Emperor, the Benevolent Dictator Shura, while plotting behind his back.
  • Uncertain Doom: His ultimate fate at the end of the series is to be reduced to a head again in Universe Zero like he was in the world before the Cosmic Retcon, leaving it unclear whether or not he survives.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: After stealing Xenolith's Satan Gravity, he's imbued with the kind of raw planet-destroying power that gets him accepted into the Oración Seis Galáctica, but none of the combat skill outside of generating gravity fields.
  • Unusual Ears: His cyborg body comes with a pair of fans in place of ears, which help cool his head when he's in the middle of a Villainous Breakdown. They also sprout twig-like arms when he's reduced to just a living head.
  • Villain Decay: Müller starts off as a cruel and mad yet brilliant scientist, as well as a major source of trauma for Hermit and Kleene, with his self-modification into an O-Tech making him a credible physical threat. When he appears in Universe Zero, he's treated as more of a joke: his psychological impact is lost thanks to Hermit overcoming her fear of him and Kleene getting her memory of him erased; he's gone so senile that his madness is Played for Laughs; and he's adopted powers he's clueless over how to properly use.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Müller proves himself a Dirty Coward once his cybernetic body is destroyed, pretending to renounce his robot-hating ways and pitifully begging for mercy from Hermit, to whom he acted as a False Friend so he could use her for his own ends. She responds by pretending to forgive him just so she can use him to shut down the server he was guarding, then punches him into next week once his purpose is over.
  • Voice Changeling: His Universe Zero self has a voice changer that lets him perfectly imitate another's voice, though he does a piss-poor job at copying their speech patterns.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: He does this to himself between the events of Hermit's Dark and Troubled Past and the Foresta arc, losing several of his body parts in a prison break Gone Horribly Wrong, which leads to him rebuilding himself as an O-Tech.
  • Who Needs Their Whole Body?: As an O-Tech whose body is entirely mechanical except for his head, he's able to keep fighting even when he's cut in half at the waist. It's only when his body is completely destroyed that he's beaten.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He's low enough to experiment on young children, as Jinn and Kleene can attest to when Müller cut the former up with a chainsaw and reassembled him as a cyborg, all while forcing the latter to watch the whole thing, leaving her emotionally crippled.

    God Acnoella

    The Skeleton Army

The Skeleton Army

Ziggy's mass-produced android army.

  • Empty Shell: Unlike other robots, they don't have any personality whatsoever, existing solely to carry out Ziggy's bidding. Subverted in the final arc, which shows they can think and feel just like any other machine.
  • Fake Ultimate Mook: They were programmed with the knowledge and skills of human experts in all kinds of fields, but to the Edens Zero crew, they're little more than a nuisance.
  • Mecha-Mooks: They're the basic foot soldiers of Ziggy's army. Since they serve Ziggy of their own free will, Shiki has no trouble using brute force against them.
  • No-Sell: They come equipped with anti-EMP technology.
  • SkeleBot 9000: A whole army of skeletal robots befitting a Demon King, hence the name.
  • Unable to Cry: They're incapable of crying since they have no tear ducts, but they can still feel tremendous sadness, which allows Laguna to work his Ether Gear on them.
  • Zerg Rush: About their greatest asset is their sheer numbers, which are great enough to briefly overwhelm Shiki's team on Lendard.

    Joker Helix

Joker Helix

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_joker.png

A member of the Oración Seis Galáctica in Universe Zero. Joker was originally a game engine developed by Professor Weisz, but grew beyond her programming and spread to other computers across the cosmos, gaining a body of her own. She comes equipped with a Delta Time Reactor, which slows time down within a given area until it's virtually frozen.

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Joker was an A.I.-powered game engine that went rogue when she kept absorbing information until she gained a mind of her own, and is now a minion of Void. However, it's discussed just how much of a hand Void had in her rebellion, since she had the makings of a Benevolent A.I..
  • Ambiguous Start of Darkness: After The Reveal that she was originally a Benevolent A.I., the crew can only speculate what drove Joker to work for Void to begin with. Professor Weisz guesses that either she empathized with Void's vision for a world without humans, or that Void found her first and altered her to suit his agenda.
  • Arc Villainess: She acts on behalf of Void as the antagonist of the Miltz arc, where she attempts to steal the Mother Ether the Edens Zero crew collected, while also acting as a personal enemy to Rebecca.
  • Bad Influencer: Subverted. Rebecca and Happy figure Joker is a B-Cuber they once heard about, but get no results when they look her up online. It turns out she was never a B-Cuber, but a rogue gaming software.
  • Benevolent A.I.: Before going rogue, Joker started out as a gaming A.I. that found joy in helping give players the best gaming experience she could provide. Given the ease that Rebecca talks her into surrendering, it's implied she was simply corrupted by Void and never stopped being the good A.I. she always was.
  • Character Catchphrase: She repeatedly says "Play a game with me, Rebecca," demonstrating her single-minded obsession with Rebecca.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget: Before she became Void's minion, all Joker wanted was to make games and help people have fun playing them. Since then, her purpose has been twisted into obsessively playing with Rebecca, the first person who ever played with her.
  • Fair-Play Villain: When she warps Rebecca into her game worlds, Joker gives her hints and opportunities to figure out how each game works.
  • For Happiness: Rebecca figures out Joker's true desire for making games is to help improve people's experiences with them.
  • Forgotten Friend, New Foe: Downplayed. As an A.I.-powered game engine, she was only just starting to develop sentience when Rebecca played her games, but grew fond enough of Rebecca to want to keep her to herself after becoming one of Void's followers. On the other hand, Rebecca barely remembers her name and never realized she was sentient before learning who she is.
  • Friend to All Children: Her first known act of sentience was to add a hint to a young Rebecca to help her beat one of her games, since Professor Weisz made it impossible to beat without sheer luck. Rebecca's recollection of this is what convinces her that the real Joker is actually kind to everyone.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: Joker Helix started out as a gaming software Professor Weisz developed to make games for Rebecca. Thanks to her fickle A.I. absorbing too much info, however, it grew into something beyond the Professor's control, becoming a follower of the Big Bad.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Rebecca talks her into one at the end of the Miltz arc, reminding her of the kindhearted entertainer she truly was before becoming Void's minion, which leads Joker to end her attack on the crew and leave peacefully.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Rebecca realizes that everything Joker does, even the illicit behavior she displays, stems from a desire to make games more fun for players. When Rebecca reminds Joker of that purpose, Joker's originally kind personality resurfaces.
  • Madness Mantra: She is prone to this when her games with Rebecca don't go as planned, repeatedly chanting "No fair" when Professor Weisz summons a giant Happy robot against her, and "Play with me" when Rebecca refuses to go along with her games anymore.
  • Meaningful Name: The name "Joker" alludes to her intended purpose as an entertainer.
  • Me's a Crowd: She has at least 100 duplicates of herself, with each copy coming with her own Delta Time Reactor. This not only helps spread her time-stopping powers further, but also allows her to multi-task in hunting the Edens Zero crew's Mother Ether and playing with Rebecca. The downside is that the clones are far weaker than the real Joker, and their time-slowing powers have a smaller Area of Effect.
  • The Most Dangerous Video Game: More specifically, she's a dangerous Game Engine in an android body with the power to create elaborate and dangerous dimensions that run on video game logic. While she doesn't go out of her way to harm Rebecca, the object of her obsession, she does try to drown Shiki and Professor Weisz after getting fed up with their interference.
  • One-Way Visor: She wears a dark visor that completely hides her real face and functions as a computer screen, and displays a monstrous Game Face when she has a Villainous Breakdown. After her Heel–Face Turn, the tint lifts to reveal a pretty, human-like face underneath.
  • Prehensile Hair: Her hair is made up of cables resembling dreadlocks, which she can manipulate freely as her primary form of attack.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: As one of the Big Bad's servants, Joker has the child-like motivation of keeping Rebecca for herself so they can play games forever, and throws a tantrum when Professor Weisz starts "ruining" her games by modifying them beyond her liking.
  • Space Master: Joker sends Rebecca into interconnected Pocket Dimensions that force her to adhere to video game logic and mechanics, such as a pixelated Three-Quarters View world where movement is limited and abilities are accessed through a menu, and a Fighting Game world where combatants have a Life Meter and Cheese Strategies are plausible. Shiki and Professor Weisz are also able to enter these dimensions from the outside.
  • Time Stands Still: Downplayed. Her Delta Time Reactor can make time appear like it's been frozen for everyone but herself, but it really just slows time down to a crawl within an Area of Effect. This gives Professor Weisz an edge when he puts together a device that cancels out her reactor, which kicks into effect while he's still "frozen".
  • Token Good Teammate: She's the only member of Universe Zero's Oración Seis Galáctica who was good to begin with, and the only one to perform a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Vengeful Abandoned Toy: Downplayed. Before gaining sentience, Joker was used to make video games for Rebecca when she was little, which Rebecca had since almost forgotten about. Now Joker is obsessed with forcing Rebecca to play with her again like the good old days, but otherwise holds no hard feelings against her.

    Lightning Law

Lightning Law

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_lightning_law.png

One of the Oración Seis Galáctica in Universe Zero. Law has power over electricity, with his Metal Gore Hypnos ability allowing him to manipulate machinery to his will.

  • Asshole Victim: He's a bastard who takes advantage of Shiki's compassion for robots and forces Void's army to fight without rest. He goes unmourned when Laguna cuts him to pieces.
  • Bad Boss: He shows how little he cares for the Skeleton Army bots under his command by casually destroying one of them with his own hands, and later by using his power to force the army back to their feet every time they're broken by Shiki.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: He can fuse his fingers into a single Ether blade.
  • Body Surf: He can possess other androids by turning into electricity, and then destroy them from within by returning to his original form.
  • Defiant to the End: Even after Laguna gives him a Curb-Stomp Battle by running him through with an ice sword, Law refuses to accept defeat and gets in a solid retaliating hit, mocking the Edens Zero crew's belief in equality between humans and machines, before Laguna finally cuts him to pieces.
  • Hero Killer: Law has the strength and emotional cunning to kill Shiki after forcing him into a Moment of Weakness, though his feat is undone when Rebecca discovers a way to reverse time in Universe Zero.
  • Kill It with Ice: Laguna destroys Law after dousing him in water and then going into Overdrive to freeze him with ice, which weakens Law's armored body enough to impale him and cut him to pieces.
  • Killed Off for Real: He's destroyed for good when Laguna cuts him apart, since all deaths are final in Universe Zero.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Law knows precisely how to get under Shiki's skin and throw him off his game, which he does by forcing Shiki to keep fighting the Skeleton Army until they're completely demolished, which goes against Shiki's stance of completely killing his enemies. Law takes advantage of this Moment of Weakness to kill Shiki.
  • Meaningful Name: Fittingly for a robot named Lightning Law, he has electrical powers.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Zig-Zagged. Law wastes no time killing Shiki the instant he hesitates to demolish Void's Skeleton Army due to his compassion for robots, but stands idly by when Rebecca enters the picture and figures out how to reverse time in Universe Zero to save Shiki.
  • Robot Master: His Metal Gore Hypnos technique is a Marionette Master ability that specifically affects robots, who are forced to follow his command and fight for him as long as they're still in one piece, no matter how damaged they are. However, his victims can resist his control through sheer force of will, as the Skeleton Army does when they're moved by Shiki's compassion for them.
  • Shock and Awe: His powers involve the use of electricity, which gives him some manner of control over other androids like the Edens One's Skeleton Army.
  • Sinister Minister: His robes and mudra hand gestures give him the image of an Eastern monk, but he's also one of the Big Bad's minions.
  • Super-Toughness: His armored body gives him the endurance to withstand being rammed by Rebecca's Leo starfighter and come out completely unscathed. Laguna works around this by soaking and flash-freezing Law, making his body brittle enough to damage.
  • Technopath: His Metal Gore Hypnos technique allows him to control other robots against their wills until they're completely reduced to scrap metal. He can also disassemble machines like starfighters with a single touch.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: His eyebrows are shaped vaguely like shooting stars.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Law is destroyed a small handful of chapters after he's introduced, receiving no backstory and very little characterization outside of being one of Void's followers.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: He's touted as one of the strongest androids in the universe, yet he easily short-circuits when exposed to ordinary water just like any other machine. This weakness is only circumvented by how his electricity makes it riskier for someone to use that water without getting fried themselves.

    Lady Freyja

Lady Freyja

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ez_lady_freyja_4.png

One of the Oración Seis Galáctica in Universe Zero, a legendary sword fighter who stands above any other in the cosmos. She wields the Hundred Arms, a shapeshifting arsenal of every known armament.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Girl: She measures people's strength purely by their numeric Ether Power Level, and thus arrogantly assumes she's stronger than anybody else because her own level of 75 million has never been surpassed. In doing so, she neglects the strength of her heart, technique, and body, thereby failing to fight to her fullest potential and losing to the technically weaker Homura.
  • Asshole Victim: She's a Robot Soldier who wants to die out of ennui towards fighting and killing, feeling no remorse for the lives she's taken. She gets her wish thanks to Homura, but because Freyja spent the fight scorning her for her inferior Power Level, it's not the dignified death she was hoping for.
  • Broken Pedestal: She was once Valkyrie's idol in the way of the warrior, but lost her admiration since Freyja threw in her lot with Void.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: It's indicated that her hyperfixation on her own Power Level has led her to neglect the strength of her body and technique, as she already saw herself as the World's Best Warrior. The result is that it's turned her into a Glass Cannon with rusty combat skills that fail her against Homura, who always strives to better herself in combat.
  • Death Seeker: Freyja has lost her will to live since she concluded that being the World's Best Warrior means there's no one powerful enough to give her a proper challenge, so she jumps at the chance to go on a Suicide Mission for Void so he can destroy her with the Edens Zero crew. This winds up giving Homura the edge needed to defeat her, because Freyja's desire to die robs her of the drive to actually win, unlike Homura, who is desperate to survive her mortal wound.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: She explodes in a fiery blaze after getting sliced in half by Homura's Extolling Flame Blade, leaving her lying on the ground in pieces.
  • The Dreaded: The mere mention that she's one of the Edens Zero crew's enemies is enough to make a hardened Master Swordswoman like Valkyrie quiver with fear.
  • Dual Wielding: Her primary weapon is a pair of mechanical swords, which she uses for the bulk of her fight with Homura.
  • Fatal Flaw: Hers is a mix of arrogance and apathy: she's so fixated on numeric Power Levels that she's convinced her supremely high Ether level of 75 million sets her too far apart from anyone else in the universe. This makes her tired of living, which in turn leaves her unmotivated to win her battles since she's sure she'd win by default. As a result, her skill and physical fitness are rusty enough for Homura to defeat her despite their vast power gap.
  • Face Death with Despair: Despite being a Death Seeker, Freyja proves to be a Sore Loser over Homura being a better swordfighter than her despite having a vastly inferior Power Level, and spends her last moments in a frenzied rage.
  • Glass Cannon: Freyja has the strength and skill to decimate over one billion people and come out completely unscathed, but because she overspecialized in strength, her body is very frail and destroyed by Homura in only a handful of strikes.
  • Killed Off for Real: Due to the finality of death in Universe Zero, Freyja meets her permanent end when she's destroyed by Homura.
  • Ludicrous Mêlée Accuracy: She slices Homura's clothes into perfect square pieces without touching her skin, and with such speed that Homura fails to notice Freyja moving her swords at all.
  • Master Swordswoman: She has mastered every kind of martial weapon, but mostly uses twin swords with Ludicrous Mêlée Accuracy.
  • Morph Weapon: Her Hundred Arms are a mechanical variety that she reconfigures into different weapons, including twin swords, a hammer, throwing stars, a spear, a whip, and a bow and arrow.
  • One-Woman Army: She has single-handedly killed approximately 1.6 billion humans in a war.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Often wears this expression to show what a psychotic person she is, seen when she regales her war history to Homura and shreds up her clothes in the blink of an eye.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Freyja, the World's Best Warrior in the series, is named after the Norse goddess of the same name, who represents war among other things.
  • Robot Soldier: She's an android programmed with every known military strategy, a powerful combat body, and mastery of all weaponry.
  • Smug Super: She's supremely assured of her own strength, which boasts an Ether Power Level of 75 million, something she rubs in Homura's face after registering her Overdrive at a mere 620,000. She's flabbergasted when Homura manages to turn the tide and damage her untouchable armor through sheer Heroic Willpower despite getting her stomach sliced open.
  • Sore Loser: Despite her death wish, Freyja can't accept losing to Homura because she'd rather be killed by someone stronger than her, or at least one who doesn't have a Power Level over one hundred times weaker than her own.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: She was created by humans as the ultimate Robot Soldier for one side of a war, but was only interested in testing her own strength rather than fighting for a human cause. This resulted in her killing a rough total of 1.6 billion people on both sides.
  • Undignified Death: As a Death Seeker, she singles the Edens One out as the only thing she wants to be destroyed by, since she believes the One has the most likely chance of succeeding. She's instead bested by Homura, an unworthy opponent in Freyja's eyes, and dies feeling humiliated over a "little girl" defeating her.
  • World's Best Warrior: Deconstructed. Freyja is the greatest warrior in the cosmos by design, born with a mastery of all weapons and never receiving so much as a scratch in battle. Because there is no one stronger than her, however, she finds no meaning in her own strength—the only thing that ever mattered to her—and has become a Death Seeker who doesn't give her all in battle.
