Cry into Chest

A variant of the Security Cling, but differs a bit in timing and execution. Usually, this will take place after a large emotional ordeal when some character, in search of some catharsis, will finally just break down and bury her head into someone else's chest, sobbing, and weeping.

There are two main varieties. If the character whose shirt is being used as a handkerchief is male, the character crying will frequently be female, and the reason this situation is occurring is due to a height differential, since men are on average taller than women. The point will be to accentuate the guy's stronger, more protective attributes. Frequently, the two are a couple or will become one, thanks in part to such moments — what woman wouldn't want a man who will give her a shoulder to cry on?

If, on the other hand, the chest belongs to a woman, the relationship will be closer to that of a mother and child, and the woman's more motherly attributes will be emphasized. This case is far less likely to be between love interests (though there are exceptions), and the two characters are a bit more likely to be same-sex. If a woman's more "motherly attributes" wind up in a character's face by accident, it's a Marshmallow Hell.

In another variation, the chest belongs to a person who has just died and this trope becomes a variation on Pietà Plagiarism as the crying person mourns them.

In all forms, this trope is likely to double as a Tear Jerker and Heartwarming Moment for the audience since it often serves double duty as a Sadness Trope and a Love Trope.

Anime & Manga

• Early on in Ai Yori Aoshi, Kaoru silently cries into Aoi as she comforts him after he reveals his past with the Hanabishi family.
• In Beyond the Boundary, this happens quite often between Akihito and Mirai, during various stages of their relationship. The first time it happens is after Mirai has just calmed down a berserk Akihito and recognized him as a friend. The second is when she's about to give him a kiss goodbye before sacrificing herself to the Big Bad. And the third happens in the finale movie when Akihito snaps Mirai out of her parasite-induced possession while confessing his love to her. Yeah, this trope happens a lot with this couple.
• Orihime does this twice in Bleach:
  • Early on, she cries on Rukia's shoulder after the deal with Acidwire aka the Hollowfied form of her older brother Sora is resolved and she manages to tell him goodbye as he's exorcised.
  • When she confesses her insecurities to Rangiku and then breaks down in tears, Rangiku comforts her with some words of encouragement, and subsequently embraces her.
• In Brave10, Isanami breaks down on Saizou after Yukimura refuses to help her early in the story.
• Captain Tsubasa:
  • In the World Youth arc, while training in Okinawa, Kojiro Hyuga arrives to a softball field where he finds his then-future girlfriend Maki Akamine crying after losing her match. She clings to his chest and chides him for not coming to support her, but he comforts her with a hug and encouraging her to win her next match.
  • The 2018 anime has it between Hikaru Matsuyama and Yoshiko Fujisawa during the Middle School arc. Matsuyama barely makes it to the airport before Yoshiko and her mother leave for the USA, and she breaks down into tears when they pour their feelings for one another, and promising to stay in touch.
• In Meiling's final appearance in Cardcaptor Sakura, she does this to Tomoyo while venting that she realizes it's Sakura that Syaoran loves and there's nothing she can do about it, not even hating Sakura for it because she's just too nice to be on the receiving end.
• In CLANNAD, one of the things that Sanae teaches Ushio is that the only place it's alright to cry is in the bathroom, so nobody can see it. Ushio later reveals to her father, Tomoya, that there's actually 2 places, in the bathroom, and in her daddy's arms.
• Code Geass:
  • Shirley Fenette cries into Lelouch's chest after telling him that her father was killed in the Battle of Narita. It's made worse by the fact that Lelouch is Zero, and thus is indirectly responsible for her father's death.
  • Lelouch Lamperouge cries into C.C.'s chest after shooting and killing his brainwashed half-sister Euphemia.
  • The final episode sees Nunnally wailing inconsolably into Lelouch's chest as he lays dead, a result of a self-sacrificial Zero-Approval Gambit to free the world from his own rule.
• In Cross Game, Aoba cries into Ko's chest after he gave her a big hug.
  "There are only two people who can make Aoba cry. Ko and Wakaba."
• A Cruel God Reigns: Jeremy sobs into Ian's chest after hallucinating Greg talking to him following he and Ian recount all the times Greg sexually abused Jeremy. Mixed with one of Jeremy's Freak Outs.
• Cyborg 004 from Cyborg 009 cries into both Hilda and Venus after they die.
• In Dear Brother, Mariko does this to Nanako at the end of episode 26 after learning about her parents' divorce and her father's affair.
• Dragon Ball Z: Videl does this to Gohan when they reunite on Kami's Lookout at the end of the Buu arc.
• In the Fullmetal Alchemist manga and the 2009 anime series Brotherhood, Winry cries into Edward's chest after he talks her out of murdering Scar out of revenge for her parents.
• Full Metal Panic!.
  • At the end of "The Second Raid", Kaname does this to Sousuke who raises his arms to hug her back, only to quickly drop them when a Girl Posse emerges from a classroom and starts shouting at him for upsetting Kaname again.
  • Handsome Lech Kurz tries to invoke this trope when he first meets Melissa Mao. Cue Kurz getting Megaton Punched through a door.
• This happens pretty frequently in Gakuen Babysitters when the kids start crying while Ryuuichi or another adult is holding them, mostly because they're so small that even when they're being held, they still don't reach the holder's collarbone. This is notably a rare male version of type 2 of this trope; Ryuuichi holds the kids to comfort them when they cry and is basically their den mother when he's at the daycare. Kotarou does this the most since he asks for Ryuu to hold him the moment he gets upset, and Kirin did it once after Ryu caught her when she jumped off a balcony in an attempt to fly.
• Mikuru does this in the faux Dating Sim Yuki does in episode 25 of Haruhi-chan.
• Erika of Heart Catch Pretty Cure suggests Yuri do that after she finds out why the then-former Precure acts like she does. Made funnier at the fact that she's the one flinging herself on Yuri's chest when she suggests it.
• Highschool Dx D: Early on, when Issei breaks down when his Training from Hell forces him to confront just how useless he feels compared to Rias' other pieces, she comforts him with a hug. It speaks volumes about how deeply affected he really is that boob-obsessed Issei is too busy sobbing to enjoy where his head is.
• The first season of I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying ends with Kaoru crying into her husband's chest, though they were Tears of Joy since she had just discovered that she was pregnant.
• This is a very common occurrence between Tomoe (the comforter) and Nanami (the one usually doing the crying) in Kamisama Kiss.
• In Kore wa Koi no Hanashi, Shinichi yells at Haruka, who is in the hospital after a random assaulter attacked her with a knife, for trying to act mature and like nothing happened. Haruka lets herself break down crying, admitting how scared she was and Shinichi hugs her in comfort.
• Love Hina:
  • Motoko breaks down and cries into Keitaro's chest when the stress of dealing with everything that's happened since her sister tried to make her take over the family dojo finally becomes overwhelming.
  • In the anime, Mei bursts into tears in Keitaro's chest when she thinks her step-sister Naru doesn't love her.
• Love Live!:
  • During the penultimate episode of School Idol Project, Umi Sonoda cries into Eli Ayase's chest along with the other members of μ's in the episode's climactic scene.
  • In the eight episode of Sunshine, Ruby Kurosawa does this to her sister Dia upon the latter's return from Tokyo.
  • Mari Ohara does this to Kanan Matsuura in another episode while making up after a big fight they had.
• Lyrical Nanoha:
  • Arf does this to Fate in the movie version of the first season after the latter recovers from her Heroic BSoD. In a slight twist, they were Tears of Joy.
  • After Nanoha and Fate become friends at the end of the first season Nanoha cries into Fate's chest when she realises that the two of them will have to go their separate ways after just now truly becoming friends to one another.
  • Vita's first order of business after being resurrected in A's was to take part in a Badass Creed with the rest of the Wolkenritter. Her second order of business was to hug Hayate and let out every last bit of emotion she'd kept pent up since the whole Book of Darkness incident started.
  • Inverted in A's by Fate when she's saying goodbye to Alicia.
  • In chapter 6 of the A's manga, Hayate cries into Nanoha's chest (while Fate hugs her from behind) after dropping her Stepford Smiler act and weeping over Reinforce Eins' Heroic Sacrifice. This scene was included in the movie adaptation.
  • This happens twice in StrikerS. First, Teana is comforted by Nanoha when she finds out that Nanoha supported her dream to become an enforcer. Then, Fate comforts Nanoha during her Heroic BSoD after Vivio is kidnapped.
• In Volume 6 of March Comes in Like a Lion, a victim of bullying cries into the chest of a close friend after the latter finds the other depressed near the river. The two people in question are Hinata and Rei, respectively.
• Kano of Mekakucity Actors breaks down shortly after revealing the truth of the situation Ene and remembering Ayano's death and the inevitable demise of both the remaining members of his family and their newfound friends. His brother Seto doesn't hesitate to pull him to his chest as he sobs hopelessly.
• Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch has its shares, with Lucia crying into Kaito's chest for example.
• Mobile Suit Gundam 00 has a rare male example. In season two, Lyle/Lockon becomes enraged after Setsuna is forced to kill Anew. Lockon confronts Setsuna and punches him repeatedly in retaliation. As Lockon's grief settles in he slumps against Setsuna and begins to sob into his chest, all while still weakly beating Setsuna with his fist.
• In Mother Keeper during Hunter part 2, Graham catches the injured Zelik just before he collapses and Zelik starts crying into his chest while Graham pets his hair.◊
• In The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Esteban cries into Mendoza's chest after Zia, Tao and Kokapetl are apparently blown up along with the solar ship, Solaris. However, Zia, Tao, and Kokapetl have survived the explosion (they were protected inside the Solaris's control room), though Tao is visibly upset at the loss of his ancestors' ship.
• In Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, the title character does this to Ypua when she reluctantly decides to cease her hidden garden.
• Negima! Magister Negi Magi:
  • Setsuna does this to Asuna when she finds out Asuna will be leaving to sleep for 100 years inside the Gravekeeper's Palace in order to save the Magic World. It's also inverted by Ayaka, who was crying for the same reason.
  • Played straight over 200 chapters earlier when Ayaka comforts Asuna after Takamichi turned down her Love Confession.
• Neon Genesis Evangelion: In the final scene of End of Evangelion, Shinji breaks down sobbing onto Asuka's chest.
• Haru cries into Akane's chest when they reconcile in chapter 28 of Ojojojo. Of course, since Haru is at least a foot taller than Akane, she was only able to do so after she fell to her knees. In something of a variation, Akane was crying just as hard as Haru was (the strip is even titled "Mingled Tears").
• One Piece:
  • After an intense argument between Luffy and Vivi, the former reveals that he doesn't want Vivi to only risk her life to save her country, but also risk theirs as well, because they're friends. This moves the young princess to tears, and Nami hugs her near her chest to comfort her.
  • During the end of the Enies Lobby arc, Nami cries against Robin out of sheer relief that they managed to rescue her.
  • After Nami reunites with Sanji near the end of the Whole Cake Island Arc, she runs up to Sanji to hug him. When Sanji looks down to her he sees her eyes tearing up.
• Persona 4: The Animation: In Episode 23, upon Nanako's death, Chie is shown sobbing into Yukiko's chest.
• Standard procedure for Mai from Popotan. Ai is the chest-provider.
• Puella Magi Madoka Magica:
  • In episode 9, Madoka cries into a dead Sayaka's chest, while in episode 10 Homura cries into recently deceased Madoka's chest in episode 10.
  • In the final episode, when Madoka is about to become an Abstract Apotheosis, revealing she got back her memories from all of the timelines, causing Homura to finally break down.
• One of the pivotal scenes in Ranma ½ involves Akane finally releasing all her angst and heartache while crying into Dr. Tofu's chest, after realizing that he'll never look at her the way he looks at her older sister Kasumi. She clings to him tightly while he silently lets her vent, unaware of the reason for her distress but knowing how much she needed it anyway. By the end, she even confesses to Ranma that "a good cry really did make [her] feel better," and that she thinks she's finally over Dr. Tofu.
• Genderflipped in Rave Master: Haru cries in Elie's chest after his father Gale dies protecting him. Later, Elie cries into Haru's chest when he returns alive one year after the final battle.
• Saint Beast: Maya does this to Judas after throwing a rock-shattering tantrum over Kira's plan to leave heaven on the day of the trial for the Saint Beast positions.
• Sket Dance: Himeko does this to Bossun.
• Sonic X: In the last episode, Tails is shown to have done this after being forced to shoot Cosmo. In a rare both-male example, the chest he cries into is Sonic's.
• Soul Eater:
  • After Marie's New Old Flame is murdered, Stein pulls her to his chest and just holds her while she sobs her eyes out. Take note that this is literally pages after Nygus warned Marie that Stein was incapable of loving anyone.
  • Tsubaki cries into Black*Star's chest after defeating her brother. Of course, she's on her knees since she's taller.
• Sword Art Online:
  • Just before the two of them join the clearing party on the 75th floor, Asuna discusses with Kirito that, on top of the extreme risk that fighting the floor boss entails, they and every other SAO player are essentially living on borrowed time, as their bodies in the real world can only be kept on life support for so long. She then breaks down crying in Kirito's chest, distraught at the possibility that they won't be able to reunite and get married outside of the game.
  • Sinon does this to Kirito during the climax of the Gun Gale Online arc, as all of her emotional problems come to the surface and she simply breaks down. Kirito comforts her during this, but since the moment was captured during a digitally-televised online tournament, he feels a need to explain to his girlfriend that there were no romantic implications to this event (Asuna, for her part, is a little suspicious/jealous when she sees it but accepts Kirito's explanation).
• TerraforMARS:
  • Marcos rests his forehead on Alex's chest and cries after apologizing to him for not being able to protect their childhood friend, Sheila, from dying at the hands of the terraformars.
  • Yaeko tries to encourage Alex to let out his grief over Sheila's death into her chest "as his big sister". This makes him laugh, as he thought she was younger. However, his laughter quickly turns to tears and Yaeko immediately holds him close.
• Chapter 21 of To Love Ru Darkness has Nana pulled into one by Rito to act as a Cooldown Hug (fits neatly as Rito is One Head Taller).
• Vampire Knight: Yuuki does this with Zero at one point.
• Your Lie in April: Kaori cries into Kousei's chest in episode 21 under the raining snow because she was afraid to be apart of Kousei in case she didn't survive the surgery. She didn't, and that was their final moment together while Kaori's still alive.

Asian Animation

• In Episode 46 of Xiǎo Xiǎo Shì Jiè Lì Xiǎn Jì, Kanna cries into her father's chest after he saves her from a fall from a very tall tree.

Comic Books

• Archie Comics: A comic had Betty out of sorts emotionally because her dad's business was going under. Archie lets her cry into his chest, which Veronica mistakes as him cheating on her. Archie flat out says "OH, SHUT UP, VERONICA!" which offends her greatly and impresses Reggie.
• Gaston Lagaffe: Prunelle once broke down crying onto Lebrac's shoulder after having to listen to aunt Hortense's awful records at maximum volume all day.
  Lebrac: [entering the office and hearing the records being blasted] What is that!?
  Prunelle: That's Lagaffe. He's repairing his aunt Hortense's record player, and he's playing his aunt Hortense's records... and his aunt Hortense and I have DIFFERENT TAAAAASTES! [breaks down]
• Legion of Super-Heroes: It happened to Cosmic Boy in the 90s. After learning his family was injured in a terrorist attack, and having his attack on said terrorists cut short by his girlfriend clocking him, sobs into her chest while hugging her when he wakes up back at base.
• Robin (1993): When Tim Drake's father was murdered and he and Batman arrived just seconds too late to save him Tim ended up crying wide-eyed clinging to Bruce's arm as Bruce hugged him against his chest.
• Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics): In Sonic Universe #38, E-123 Omega comes across Hope Kintobor crying and curled up on the floor after a meeting with Snively, distraught that she would never have a normal life or family again. In a heartwarming moment, Omega holds her in his arms and lets her cry into his chest plate.
  Omega: Um... there-there? Please do not leak anymore? I am sorry. I was not built to comfort.
• Superman:
  • When New Krypton gets destroyed during the "War of the Supermen", making Superman and Supergirl the last of their kind once again, Supergirl cries into her cousin's chest at least twice.
  • In The Supergirl From Krypton (1959), Kara is a fifteen year old girl who has just been stranded in an alien world after losing her parents and her whole civilization. When she finds out that Superman is her cousin, she hugs him and cries into his chest.
  • At the beginning of Superman: Brainiac, Kal hugs Kara as his cousin is having a breakdown. Kara buries her face on his chest and cries.
  • In The Unknown Supergirl, Kara cries into her cousin's chest when, after spending one year training and striving to prove she was ready to go public, her powers disappear right when Superman is about to announce the world her existence.
  • It happens twice in The Untold Story of Argo City. Supergirl cries into her mother Allura's chest after getting her out of a dimensional prison. Later, after being made to believe her future self will be forced to kill Superman or her father, Kara cries into her mother's chest again.
  • In The Girl with the X-Ray Mind, a flashback scene shows Lena Luthor's parents dying in a traffic crash when she was a little girl, and Lena sobbing into the chest of the woman who was taking her to an orphanage.
  • The Leper from Krypton: Supergirl breaks down crying onto Superman's right shoulder when his cousin, who had been declared dead, reveals he survived.
• Wonder Woman (1987): Once Circe's brainwashing is undone with the lasso of truth Superman cries into Wonder Woman's chest while apologizing for fighting and hurting her. It comes across as a bit over the top given there's still the ends of a giant battle going on throughout New York that both of them could be helping with, and Diana heals unnaturally quickly and isn't even all that banged up considering who she was fighting.

Fan Works

• In The Beast Of Gusu, Wei Wuxian cries into Lan Wangji's chest twice: the first time following the attack on Cloud Recesses upon seeing that their home is mostly intact, the second time happens after their reunion in Chapter 3 of "Unstoppable".
• In Beyond The Storm, Max does this a lot with Chloe. The first case of this leads directly into their Relationship Upgrade.
• In Bringing Me To Life, Neo cries into Smith's chest. This coming after Neo's fight with Morpheus during which the captain refuses to believe that Smith can love Neo and says that the ex-Agent is using him.
• The Butterfly Effect (Elfen Lied): In chapter 3, Kaede cries into the chest of her mother Mikomi, pouring out all of her accumulated sorrow.
• Child of the Storm:
  • In chapter 72 of the first book, a 13-year-old Harry ends up weeping into his father and godmother's chests respectively after having come across Luna Lovegood's dead body, then being killed by Daken in the fight with the HYDRA Assault Team and resurrected immediately after, when he just breaks down under the emotional strain.
  • In chapter 60 of the sequel, Harry does much the same (with father and godmother) after cracking under a Past Experience Nightmare of the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of the Red Room - specifically, Yelena Belova. Carol, meanwhile, does the same with Steve (her father-figure and great-grandfather) in the same chapter, due to the strain of trying to support Harry through that and inability to help more.
• Children of an Elder God: After Asuka realized her crush Kaji loved Misato, Asuka broke down sobbing onto Shinji's chest when he tried to comfort her.
• Dead or Alive 4: The Devil Factor: In chapter 11, Ayame breaks down in tears while talking to Dante about her husband Shiden, who perished when Vergil's demon horde razed the Mugen Tenshin village. Dante awkwardly attempts to comfort her by touching her shoulder, but when Ayame latches on to him and starts crying into his chest, Dante gives in and holds her as she continues to sob her eyes out.
• In the Turning Red fic Den Tae Phobia, Tae cries in Jesse's arms when he confesses he's afraid of going to the dentist.
• Forget-me-not (don't leave me behind) has Lan Xichen doing this to his younger brother as they reconcile. He later does the same to his mother after seeing her for the first time in years.
• Greenfire: After Greenfire reveals to Rarity how he grew up alone in a forest, Rarity is the one who snuggles up and begins weeping. His gentleness and sensitivity during the scene triggers Rarity's Love Epiphany.
• Guys Being Dudes: Arlo grabs onto Spark and does this after Spark revives from passing out after saving him from a falling playground structure.
• Here There Be Monsters: As telling her mother how frightened she is of possibly remaining fifteen forever, Mary Marvel buries her face into Edith's chest and cries.
  "I don't know. I hope not. I pray not." Mary sat down, smoothing her skirt first. "I mean, Mom.... you'd think being 15 forever would be a great thing, wouldn't you, unless you really had to do it?"
  "I know," said Mrs. Bromfield. "There's an old saying that youth is wasted on the young. But that's not really true. Youth is there to be wasted, as is age. It's your own decision as to how you waste both."
  "I, I wish I had some to waste," said Mary, sniffing. "Oh, God, Mama, I just wish I didn't have to be like this forever..."
  Within seconds, Mary was in her foster mother's arms, pressing her face to Edith's chest and crying her eyes out.
• Hope for the Heartless: Avalina does this several times with the Horned King after he has regained a living heart.
• Hunters of Justice: After Brainiac bottles all of Remnant's major cities and subsequently destroys the planet, a heavily injured team RWBYJNPR is able to escape via a Boom Tube with a Motherbox they stole from him. They arrive on Earth and are rescued by the Justice League and brought to the Watchtower to recover. However, they all wake up dazed, confused, and in a blind panic. They start putting up a fight before the rest of the League members arrive to diffuse the situation. Superman then arrives and comforts a distraught Ruby by gently hugging her, which she returns and starts sobbing.
• During Principal Skinner's wedding in I Hope You're Prepared For An Unforgettable Wedding!, his trope-naming beloved smother Agnes is so distraught over her son leaving the nest that during the mother-son dance, she ends up burying her face in his chest and wailing about how she's "losing him".
• Infinity Train: Seeker of Crocus: Specter finally reunites with his old denizen partner Lampetia in the beginning of Act 2. The only thing he can do is race into her arms and cry at how he was unable to save her from dying.
• In a DeviantArt Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) post titled It Wasn't Your Fault, Leonardo is crying into Karai's chest as he blames himself for Karai's mutation.
• The Kedabory Verse:
  • In the Punch-Out!! fanfic Home Sick (NoonboryKedabory), Aran Ryan weeps into Disco Kid's chest after his pain gets to be a bit too much, even for him.
  • In the Encanto/Turning Red fanfic hush now, little one, Tae-young weeps into Bruno's chest over his Fear of Thunder.
  • In The Season's My Reason, Yui breaks down into Bruno's arms when she finds out that she has to defeat an evil chef before she can go home to her sick brother.
• In Of Rocks And Robots, Cass ends up doing this with Krei of all people, after a series of events makes her grief from the death of Tadashi resurface. It gets to the point that Krei starts crying as well.
  Suddenly she burst into tears. She couldn't hold her feelings back any more and over a years worth of pain and grief started to pour out of her.
  Krei, in a panic, wrapped her into a hug and she held on tight to him as she cried.
  "I... I know Tadashi is back now..." She sobbed, "and I'm soo, so grateful... b-but... that doesn't change the past. It doesn't change what we had to go through... what I had to go through..."
  Krei gently rocked her back and forth in his arms as he stroked the top of her head. "Sssh.. please don't cry... I'm sorry... don't cry... I don't know what to do when people cry, c-cause if you cry, then I'll start crying… and, and we'll both have runny makeup...bawahaha."
• In The Keys Stand Alone: The Soft World, just after George removes Durothé's curse. (At that moment Durothé's actual sex was still unknown; she would be revealed as [currently] female a bit later.) She sobs wildly all over his chest. Female-on-male instance of this trope.
• In The Lion King Adventures, Nala cries into Simba's chest when he is presumed to have died in Friends to the End. However, it turns out he's not dead after all.
• MHA: World's Finest: Recalling the story of how she lost her husband and subsequently gave up her son for his safety ends with Nana sobbing while Bruce holds and comforts her.
• In More than Meets the Eye, after Misty prods Ash into saying "I told you so" when he warned her about her fiancé planning to betray her, she runs to him and punches him in the chest, until she breaks into sobs and clutches to him. He hugs her back and comforts her.
• Much Ado About Shakespeare: Love's Labours Won: Horatio Hornblower sobs into his fellow officer and friend Archie Kennedy's shoulder the night following Mariette's death. Apparently, they spend most of the night close to each other like that. Only in the early morning hours, Horatio falls asleep.
• In chapter 3 of Naruto: the Secret Songs of the Ninja, Hinata starts sobbing after Naruto makes a promise with her that as long as she never gives up, he'll always believe in her. Naruto, thinking he might have said something to upset her, cautiously reaches out for her, only for Hinata to grab his jacket and bury her face in his chest. Once he shakes off the shock, Naruto gingerly wraps his arms around her and pats her on the back until she regains control.
• In the second part of Battlestar Galactica (1978) collection 'Wishes and Dreams' series, Nightmares, Starbuck has a nightmare and Apollo has to hold him to calm him down. Apollo figures out later that Starbuck was actually dreaming about the former's death at the hands of Count Iblis.
• The Night Unfurls: In Chapter 8 of the original, Kyril finds Lily in a healer's tent sobbing her guts out, as a result of her trauma and Crisis of Faith. Feeling his hand on her shoulder, she wipes away her tears as an attempt to hide them. Kyril tells her not to hold back, and so Lily does exactly that by throwing her arms around him crying. He does not exit the tent until she slept.
• The Rigel Black Chronicles: Harry finally breaks down crying into Leo's shoulder after he tells her that he knows she's "Rigel Black". And she knows he's been covering for her.
• In Pictures of Us, Peter Parker from the Webb-verse Spider-Man films finds himself transported into Raimi's Spider-Man universe where he ends up crying in the arms of first that universe's MJ, then her Peter during dinner when the subject of Harry Osborn was brought up.
• In Safe Anchorage Jeyne is described as burying her face in Theon's chest during her trauma-induced breakdowns multiple times, including after a Past Experience Nightmare and when she realizes she's pregnant with her abuser's child.
• Snow Blind: After Raph and Donnie finally open up about their reasons for fighting so much lately, Don breaks down and cries into Raph's shoulder over the stress he's been under for the last year.
• The Spectacular Spider-Man: Lost in Gotham: A Tears of Joy version. When Doctor Fate brings Aunt May to the DC Universe for a day to reunite with Peter, she and Bruce get a moment alone. She gives Bruce a hug while she cries, telling him how terrified she was when Peter disappeared and how grateful she is that Bruce took him in.
• Spider-Ninja: Done in the very first chapter. Splinter found four-year-old Petra shortly after Ben and May Parker were murdered. Petra, when asked why she's alone in the storm sewers, breaks down crying after admitting her family is dead. Splinter gives her a hug and lets her cry for a while before he decides to take her in.
• In Thieves Can Be Heroes!, Makoto hugs Izuku tightly after the latter is distraught over his failure to prevent Shiho from attempting suicide.
• True Potential: Hinata cries into Naruto's outfit when she's traumatized over killing someone for the first time.
• The Ultimate Evil:
  • Valerie Payne sobs in Jackie's shoulder when she thinks Uncle just got killed by Hak Foo.
  • When Valerie is escaping from Shendu in Hollowland's penitentiary, she runs by chance into the man who killed her father yet doesn't seem to remember her. She's overwhelmed by outrage and grief so much that after Shendu scares the man away, she throws herself against his chest and weeps without caring from who she's seeking comfort. Shendu takes her with him while whispering comforting words to her.
  • Valerie does this again with Jackie in the last chapter while she's confessing the heartaches she's had about everything that's happened.
  • Valerie does this again with Shendu in the 22nd chapter of the sequel when he has told her what Hsi Wu has been doing to Jade. Jade herself soon afterwards does this with Valerie after Hsi Wu has been gotten rid of.
• Us and Them: After witnessing President Shinra's death, Jessie starts crying into Rufus' shoulder. He's surprised to realize she's crying over him, specifically his treatment at the hands of his father.
• A Very Kara Christmas: Kara bursts out in tears when she remembers how her parents and friends died, and she buries her head into her cousin's chest while he hugs her comfortingly.
  "Kara." He quickly put his arms around her. "Don't think about it, honey, not right now."
  "Oh, I can't help it," she said, and sobbed, purging out pain for her mother, her father, her friends, and everything she had known for fifteen years, wiped out in a single week. She buried her head in his chest and wet his S-shield with her tears.
• In the Star Wars Rebels fanfic Patron of the Art of War, once the Ghost Crew rescues her from Thrawn, Sabine practically cries into Kanan’s chest out of pure relief that he, and the others, are really before her after believing them dead for a month.

Films — Animation

• In Anastasia, Anya cries into Dmitri's chest after waking up from her Rasputin-induced nightmare.
• In Antz, Azteca starts to silently sob into Weaver's chest when Z's body is laid down by Cutter after he apparently succumbs to the water in his lungs while helping to rescue the colony from the flood.
• Beauty and the Beast: After the Beast is stabbed by Gaston and dies in Belle's arms, Belle lays her head on his chest with a tearful Anguished Declaration of Love.
• Coco: Miguel cries into Héctor's chest as the latter comforts him when both of them find themselves in the cenote..
• In the 1981 Japanese animated film The Fantastic Adventures of Unico based on the Unico manga series by Osamu Tezuka. After Unico befriends a black cat named Katy/Chao/Chloe, she and Unico discuss about being abandoned due Unico being forced to leave to different locations by The West Wind due to a group of gods not liking him for making people happy and sends The Night Wind to kill him. While Katy tells Unico that she isn't abandoned, she suddenly breaks down and starts crying into Unico's arms revealing that she was abandoned. Unico responds by hugging her gently.◊ The original manga version of the two hugging is just as heart-wrenching.◊
• Frozen: Elsa finally breaks down and does this to Anna's frozen body after she sacrifices herself for Elsa. Given Elsa's usual demeanour, it's heartbreaking.
• Inside Out: When Riley finally admits her heartbreak over the move to her parents, she cries into her father's chest when they pull her in for a group hug.
• Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. After realising she's going to be killed by Fuse, Kei begins to quote from Little Red Riding Hood (a reoccurring theme throughout the film), eventually throwing herself to Fuse's chest and crying out, "Mother, what big claws you have! Mother, what big teeth you have!" whereupon a distraught Fuse shoots her.
• SCOOB!: Velma and Daphne both cry into Fred's chest after Shaggy sacrifices himself, entering the portal to the Underworld in Scooby-Doo's stead in order to keep it locked and prevent Dick Dastardly from opening it.
• In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Dopey weeps into Doc's chest while the dwarfs mourn Snow White's apparent death.
• The Tigger Movie: Roo does this to Pooh while tearfully begging him to help him find Tigger as he left to find his real family under the impression that his friends think of his real family as a joke.
  Roo: (tearfully) You've gotta help me find Tigger! It's All My Fault! He never would've left if it wasn't 'cause of me. I didn't mean to make him feel bad. I just... I just wanted him to be my big brother...
• In the Disney film Treasure Planet, Jim believes it is his fault that Mr. Arrow was killed by being sucked into the black hole, prompting Silver, who knows it wasn't actually Jim's fault, to give him a pep talk in a heartwarming moment. Jim, who has begun to look up to Silver as the father he never had, puts his head against Silver's chest and cries into it. Silver is awkward at first but then hugs him, telling him it's alright in one of the film's biggest Tear Jerker and heartwarming moments.
• Zootopia: When Judy and Nick reconcile, she has an emotional breakdown during her apology and Nick invites her into a Cooldown Hug and she does this.

Films — Live-Action

• In Aloha, Bobby and Rose, Rose cries into Bobby's chest because she misses her son Erick, and later because their plan to bring Erick with them didn't work.
• ...And Your Name Is Jonah: Jonah tries to communicate to Jenny that he wants a hot dog. When she doesn't understand him, he starts hitting her repeatedly, and when she hugs him, he cries into her shoulder.
• Shown in Barry Lyndon, when the title character's friend is dying, after giving him the final kiss he requested, Barry collapses onto his chest, weeping.
• In The Black Balloon (2007), Thomas cries into his mother's chest after he and his brother have a particularly nasty fight in front of his girlfriend.
• Parodied in Blazing Saddles, when it's done with two guys, the crier being a Camp Gay.
  "You brute, you brute, you vicious brute!"

• In Bloody Mama, Herman cries into Kate's chest after committing an Accidental Murder.
• After Leslie’s death in Bridge to Terabithia, a heartbroken Jess cries into his father’s chest.
• At the end of Camille (1936), after Marguerite dies in Armand's arms, he buries his face in her chest sobbing "Marguerite, come back! Come back!", while the camera zooms in on her lifeless face.
• In Dancing Trees, Martha cries into Nicky's chest after one of her flashback nightmares to her mother's murder.
• Ultimately Played for Laughs in Dumb and Dumber. After Harry agrees to go across the country with Lloyd to help pursue Mary and give her back her briefcase, the latter begins to sob onto the former's chest, with his encouragement to "let it all out". As he then begins to sob even harder, he then gently pushes him off saying that's enough.
• How about the first 20 minutes of Fight Club? A major theme is how random people in the support groups pair up to cry on one another. Of particular note is the narrator being paired up with Bob, a former bodybuilder who has 'bitch tits' due to steroid abuse; it doesn't matter to the narrator after discovering how good it feels to cry.
• In The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Barney cries into Fred's shoulder as the two cry in jail over their loss of Wilma and Betty.
• In Fly Away, Mandy cries into Jeanne's chest during a meltdown. Later, Jeanne cries into her ex-husband's chest over the possibility of institutionalizing Mandy.
• In The Giant (2016), Rikard cries into Roland's chest after Roland rescues him from bullies.
• In G Men, Kay does this with her brother Jeff, after begging him not to make himself a target for the mob, and then with Brick, when she begs him to keep Jeff from danger.
• In Hands Across the Table, Regi's broken up about Ted, and goes up to Allen's apartment and confesses that she fell in love like a sucker, and cries accordingly.
• As in the novel, Hermione does this to Ron in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; he takes it better here than in the book.
• In The Hunger Games, Prim is shown crying into Katniss' chest, an example of the "motherly" version of the trope (since Katniss essentially plays the role of mother in the Everdeen family).
• In In Bruges, a guilt-ridden and suicidal Ray breaks down and cries into Ken's chest over committing a murder that went horribly wrong.
• The heartwarming moment in Interstellar, when they wake Dr. Mann from his cryonic sleep and he starts sobbing Manly Tears into Cooper's chest.
• Hassan to Amir in Komaa, twice. When Hassan's father dies, Amir cries too.
• In Leo the Last, Salambo cries into Leo's chest over her family's misfortunes since coming to London.
• In Little Women (2019), Marmee cries into Jo's chest after Beth dies. Especially poignant because it's the mother crying into the daughter's chest instead of vice-versa.
• Mad Love (1995) has several scenes in which the mentally ill Casey has a breakdown and cries into Matt's chest.
• Man of Steel: Gender inverted for Manly Tears when Superman is held by Lois Lane after being forced to kill General Zod. Lois is standing and holds the kneeling Superman against her stomach.
• In Mario (2018), Leon cries into Mario's chest over being forced to hide their relationship.
• In Midwinter Night's Dream, Jovana cries into Lazar's chest after her mother is killed.
• In Moving Violation, Cam cries into Eddie's chest over their situation as fugitives in an unfamiliar town.
• In The Muppet Christmas Carol, Rizzo cries against Gonzo's chest after they watch Belle break up with Young Scrooge and (in the uncut version) hear her sing the song "When Love is Gone."
• In Mystic Pizza, there's a sisterly variation. After Kat finds out the wife of Tim, the man she'd been babysitting for, and whom she just slept with, has come home, and Tim just pretends Kat doesn't exist, she goes home in a daze and starts crying when she sits down on her bed. Daisy, who had been feuding with her up to that point, sees this, is moved by her distress, and hugs her, letting Kat cry onto her sweater.
• Occurs in Night of the Blood Beast, with a traumatically-resurrected astronaut crying into his wife's chest. Which, as Joel and the bots are quick to point out, gives him a faceful of her breasts.
  Joel: Hmm... this helps!
• In Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Will holds Elizabeth tightly both to comfort her while she cries and to prevent her from jumping off The Black Pearl to go to her father, who is one of the boats of the dead below.
• In The Rainbow Experiment, Toni cries into her father's chest after Matty is badly injured in an explosion at school.
• In Relative Fear, Linda reacts to some of the murders by crying into her husband Peter's chest.
• In Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love, Bryn cries into Barry's chest because she thinks she did something wrong, which is why her autistic brother won't play with her.
• In Star Trek Into Darkness, Uhura cries into Scotty's chest when she follows Spock into Engineering just in time to see Kirk die.
• In Sunburn (1979), Ellie cries into Jake's shoulder after a man tries to kill her while she's scuba diving.
• In Too Soon to Love, Cathy cries into Jim's shoulder over her upcoming abortion.
• In Tricky People, Carmen cries in Yello Dyno's arms after she tells him about being sexually abused by Reginald Charming.
• In Under the Piano, Franny cries into the housekeeper Mrs. Syms' chest after her mother Regina fires her.
• Myra cries into Roy's chest after she has a mini-meltdown in Waterloo Bridge.
• Up in the Air: A major turning point in Ryan and Natalie's relationship is when Natalie admits that her boyfriend dumped her and becomes so devastated by it that she begins to cry, leading to Ryan awkwardly hugging her and letting her sob into his chest in an attempt to comfort her. This is witnessed by Ryan's girlfriend Alex, who aside from the initial awkwardness is understanding and helps her calm down as well.
• We Too Together: As a child, Rob cries into his father Carl's chest on several occasions, including after Carl rescues him from bullies, and after he becomes overwhelmed by a recording a psychologist was using to test his sensory sensitivities.
• Happens in When Harry Met Sally.... Sally calls Harry in tears after finding out that her ex is getting married. He comforts her, and she cries on him.
• In When the Bough Breaks (1994), Jordan cries into Macleah's chest after one of his psychic seizures.

Literature

• In Angel Of Darkness, the sequel to The Alienist, after Kat, the prostitute Stevie was in love with, is poisoned to death by the Big Bad, Stevie cries into Sara Howard's chest.
• The Corpse Came Calling: Two different women do this with the protagonist, Hardboiled Detective Michael Shayne. Shayne's wife Phyllis does it sincerely, because she is rattled after a man staggered into their office and died with three bullets in his chest. Helen does it insincerely, because she is the Femme Fatale telling a sob story, and she is really pressing her body up against him in hopes of seducing him.
• In Count to the Eschaton, Rania invokes this with Menelaus. (He's a clueless Science Hero, she's had a crush on him for a long time...)
• The dramatic confrontation between Janine and Candayce, in Dinoverse, ends this way.
• Dolphin Trilogy: In Destiny and the Dolphins, Vinca cries into John's shoulder as she tells him about James' Attempted Rape of her.
• Edgedancer (a novella of The Stormlight Archive): When Nale is undergoing a Villainous BSoD, Lift pulls him in a hug and he cries hysterically with his head pressed into her chest.
• Harmony (2016): When Tilly and Iris see the filthy, run-down cabin where they'll have to live, they both start crying. Iris sobs into Alexandra's shoulder.
• The Harry Potter books:
  • In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hermione cries into Ron. He is terrified.
  • Hermione cries into Ron's chest at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince after Dumbledore's funeral. This time, Ron just holds her and cries Manly Tears.
  • The motherly version of the trope happens towards the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when Harry is comforted by Molly Weasley, except that Harry refuses to cry.
• Katniss cries into Peeta's chest toward the end of the first book in The Hunger Games. Notable because she had been fighting her emotions all throughout the book, because the situation was the one moment when she had to make the romance seem most genuine, and because they were on national TV.
• In Julia's Kitchen, Cara buries her face in her maternal grandmother's neck, and they both cry over the death of Cara's mother and sister in a House Fire.
• Jonah in Laughing Winds panics and goes into hiding due to the situation he and the other main characters are trapped in and him losing hope of ever being able to escape. When he is found and confronted by the others he breaks down completely and is comforted by Annika.
• The Novelization of Return of the Jedi is slightly different from the film in several places. The scene where Luke tells Leia who they both are and that he has to face Vader is much more emotional than in the film. Before Luke pulls away and leaves to meet his destiny, the twins hold each other, weeping "openly".
• Togetherly Long: Chiisai does this to Oukii after she's hurt by a particularly nasty insult from Emperor Von Mal.
• Trish from Wicked Good cries into Archer's chest over her pregnancy.

Live-Action TV

• Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:
  • In the first season episode "T.R.A.C.K.S.", Simmons does this into Fitz's chest after Skye gets shot, and there doesn't seem any hope of saving her.
  • In the second season episode "Melinda", in a Flashback, May does this into Coulson's chest after she was forced to kill a little girl who turned out to be an Inhuman.
• In the Babylon 5 episode "Confessions and Lamentations", all the Markab in quarantine on the station have fallen to the plague. Delenn and Lennier, having stayed with them the whole time, have had to sit helplessly and watch them all die. By the time Sheridan and Franklin arrive, it is too late. Lennier is trying to hide his tears, but Delenn breaks down as Sheridan comforts her.
• Bones:
  • Brennan is crying into Booth's chest as she's trying to come to grips with the revelations about her family.
  • Brennan cries on Booth's chest after the team investigated the death of a homeless man who turned out to be a Desert Storm veteran who died from injuries sustained while rescuing people from the wreckage of the Pentagon during the 9/11 attacks. She recalled that she had helped identify remains taken from the World Trade Center, and how dry-eyed she remained, but now she found herself thinking that Booth could have been killed during the attack and that they might have never met.
• In Breaking Bad at the end of season 2, Walt finds Jesse on the floor in a meth den, drugged and practically passed out. When he tries to pick him up, Jesse breaks down and starts to sob into his jacket, so Walt sits back down and just holds him while he cries about Jane's death.
• In the Broad City episode "Witches," Ilana cries into her sex therapist's chest over her inability to have an orgasm.
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
  • Buffy cries into Angel's chest after smashing the Master's bones in "When She Was Bad".
  • Angel cries into Buffy's chest/stomach while kneeling in front of her after he returned from hell.
  • "Grave" ended with Willow crying into Xander's chest after his gesture of friendship combined with the magic she had stolen from Giles taps into her humanity, forcing her to see the consequences of her psychotic rampage and to come to grips with the fact that she had murdered Warren in cold blood.
• Burn Notice lampshades it in a voiceover in the pilot:
  Michael: 30 years of karate. Combat experience on five continents. A rating with every weapon that shoots a bullet or holds an edge. Still haven't found any defense to Mom crying into my shirt.
• Twice on CSI: NY:
  • Lindsay cries into Danny's chest after impersonating a robber goes wrong and she's rescued in "Not What It Looks Like."
  • Christine cries into Mac's chest after he rescues her from her kidnappers in "Seth and Apep, though they're on the floor at the time.
• Catherine did it once with Warrick in a Ship Tease moment in CSI after she was attacked by a suspect while processing a scene.
• During The Daily Show's last episode with Jon Stewart as host, Stephen Colbert turns up and, after a bit of banter with Jon, goes completely off-script to honestly, sincerely thank him on behalf of everyone for all he had done for his correspondents and staff over the years (against Jon's own wishes, as he had told them years earlier that they didn't need to thank him for anything^note to which Colbert said, "It is one of the few times I have known you to be dead wrong"). The overwhelming sincerity of the moment reduced Jon to tears, and as soon as Stephen was finished, Jon just hid his face against Stephen's shoulder and cried. (At which point they were dogpiled by all the returning correspondents, who by Colbert's own admission were chanting "Made him cry! Made him cry!" during the group hug.)
• Daredevil (2015): Foggy holds a crying Karen this way as she greatly fears getting him and Matt killed for talking to them about the Union Allied pension file that Wilson Fisk had tried to have her killed over.
• In the Decoy episode "Bullet of Hate," a teenage girl cries into Casey's chest when she's arrested for her abusive aunt's murder.
• Doctor Who:
  • When the Doctor is apparently killed in "Pyramids of Mars", Sarah Jane Smith sobs into his chest, causing the Not Quite Dead Doctor to wake up and complain that she's "soaking his shirt".
  • The same thing happens in "The Impossible Astronaut", when Amy sobs into the Eleventh Doctor's chest just after he appears to have been shot dead.
  • In Classic Who, Barbara's chest is the go-to place for sobbing and comfort. It is usually Susan who does this but in "The Sensorites" a male crewmember of a spaceship also gets some comforting.
  • In the Series 6 episode "The Curse of the Black Spot", Amy does this to Rory after he nearly drowns and her badly administered CPR doesn't bring him back for a few minutes.
  • Tegan and Nyssa cry on each other's shoulders following Adric's death at the end of "Earthshock".
  • Clara cries quietly into an aged 11's chest after he asks her for "one last victory" in "The Time of the Doctor".
• In the 13th episode of Dollhouse, an insane Topher is comforted by Adelle DeWitt after his My God, What Have I Done? moment.
• In Flashpoint, after Lewis was killed in a bomb explosion, Parker was gently comforting and cradling a sobbing Spike.
• From Flower Boy Ramyun Shop Eun Bi does this to the image of her dead father after he dies, it's not until a little while later she realises it was Kang Hyuk.
• In the pilot episode of Friday Night Lights, Lila breaks down sobbing into Julie's chest at the hospital after Jason's injury.
• Friends In Season 1 Monica cries into Chandler's chest after her Mom says that she's never going to get married or have children, which she desperately wants. He also offers her a Fall Back Marriage Pact. (This was before they got together.)
• At the end of the episode "Baelor" in Game of Thrones (you know the one), Arya sobs into Yoren's chest as he forces her not to look when her father is beheaded for treason. In this case, it's not romantic but an act of Yoren's respect for and loyalty towards her father and their family.
• Gilmore Girls:
  • In the first season episode "Forgiveness and Stuff", Lorelai cries Tears of Joy (and relief) into Luke's chest when she finds out her father Richard, who had been rushed to the hospital, is going to be okay.
  • Later that season, in the episode "The Breakup, Part II", a mother/daughter variation; Rory has been in denial about her feelings regarding her breakup with Dean in the previous episode, or at least that's what Lorelai thinks, as she keeps telling her daughter she needs time to wallow in the grief she must feel. At the end of the episode, Lorelai comes home to find Rory in tears, telling her mother, "I think I'm ready to wallow now." Lorelai sits down next to her and holds Rory while she cries into her mother's chest.
• Popular: In the final episode, "Promblems", upon delivering their baby sister, Brooke starts tearing up as Sam holds her close.
• Glee:
  • Rachel cries into Finn's chest◊ after she messes up the most important audition of her life.
  • An even sadder version occurred when Rachel cried into Mr. Schue's chest◊ after Finn's death. Mr. Schue later that evening has one crying in his wife Emma Pillsbury's chest, having held back from crying over Finn for some time to be strong for the students.
• Highlander: Tessa cries in Duncan’s arms after being kidnapped in the episode “Mountain Men” and after a mentally ill immortal gets into the barge and attacks her. There’s also a non romantic one with her and Richie after Michael Moore shifts to his Quentin Barnes personality and chokes her.
• In Korean Drama series The Great Doctor, the titular doctor Eun Soo breaks down crying on the nearest friendly shoulder after a very stressful Embarrassing Rescue—somewhat awkwardly for the recipient, as her Love Interest arrives right after that.
• Late in the run of Happy Days, Joanie becomes a student teacher at her high school. She is accosted by a thug student, and Fonzie enters and saves her. He lets Joanie cry into his chest after the ordeal.
• On Heroes, Maya's brother Alejandro is suspicious about Sylar after he discovers a news article about his mother's murder. She doesn't exactly believe him and he walks away in anger when Sylar interrupts their conversation. She starts crying and Sylar gently holds her against him as she sobs into his shirt.
• Inspector Lynley provides the page image. After being held hostage at gunpoint - on her first case back after taking a bullet to the stomach in the previous series finale - DS Barbara Havers goes a bit insane and uses the man who held her hostage as a punching bag. Her partner DI Lynley hauls her off the guy and manages to punch through her Flashback Echo, whereupon she absolutely falls apart and sobs hysterically into his shirt while he kisses her hair and clutches her close.
• A male-on-female example in JAG when the usually-stoic Harm leans into into Mac for the clutch while they are waiting for the outcome of a risky surgery on a mutual friend who stepped on a landmine. He is arguably closer to the friend than she is so he presumably needs the comfort more; she obliges.
• Joan of Arcadia Adam cries into Joan's chest while watching home videos of him with his mother, who committed suicide several years ago.
• In Judging Amy, after Jared dies, Amy manages to keep it together for Maxine's sake, until Bruce shows up at the end of the episode to tell her how sorry he is, at which point she breaks down and cries into Bruce's chest.
• In Kamen Rider Fourze, JK does this after apologizing up and down for what he did during the Capricorn Zodiarts incident and how Gentaro forgives him.
• In Knight Rider, this tends to happen a lot between Michael and the girl of the week. Not that Michael seems to mind.
• On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Rollins is kidnapped by the father of the victims in the squad's latest case, when he feels it was handled poorly. Amanda remians calm thorough, often talking him through his own anxiety, before taking advantage of a moment of distraction and grabbing his gun. It ends in her hauling him into the precinct herself at gunpoint and handcuffed. But when it's over and Carisi offers to drive her home, she breaks down when they're alone in the elevator, and leans into him for comfort, which he is all to willing to provide.
• Will and Vara were heading for this in The Legend of William Tell in The Spirit of Kale, when Aruna was thought dead. Will got as far as getting an arm around her shoulder before Aruna turned up alive and it turned into a Group Hug.
• M*A*S*H: In an important moment for Major Houlihan's Character Development, Margaret breaks down crying when she learns a stray dog that the camp had taken in (one she had gotten attached to) was hit by a car. She tries to hide it, only to break when Hawkeye confronts her about it, wondering how she can handle treating/seeing the dead and dying every day without cracking but fall apart at the death of a dog. Hawkeye hugs her and lets her cry while he comforts her. Aww...
• In Merlin Guinevere cries into Arthur's chest when Morgana is badly wounded.
• Monk:
  • In "Mr. Monk Gets Lotto Fever", Monk and Natalie have an acrimonious split after Natalie's new job as lotto girl goes to her head and gets in the way of her job with Monk. After a lotto scandal breaks, Natalie comes to Monk in desperation, hoping he can prove she didn't cheat and keep her from going to jail. After a broken apology for her diva-ish behavior earlier, she leans on him, nearly in tears, begging him to help her. Monk is uncomfortable but allows it.
  • In "Mr. Monk and the Voodoo Curse", Natalie (who actually believes in voodoo) gets a decapitated doll with her name in the mail and drinks a potion she was supposed to rub on her neck, requiring a trip to the hospital. Midway through the drive, Monk figures out the culprit: the EMT who responded to the cases and now has Natalie. After ramming the ambulance, Monk lets Natalie out and she cries into his chest over all the trauma she's been through.
• In the NCIS episode "Swan Song", Ziva cries into Tony's chest in the elevator after Mike Franks dies. When the elevator doors open, McGee is seen comforting Abby, which leads to the four of them in a Group Hug in the elevator. Bring the tissue box.
• A heart-wrenching example from the season two finale of The Night Shift, with Jordan crying into TC's after she finds out that she's lost her baby while he attempts to comfort her, even as he grieves along with her.
• The O.C.:
  • In the first season, Marissa and Ryan have a short one after Oliver Trask holds Marissa hostage by threatening to shoot himself. Marissa starts crying into Ryan's shoulder while apologizing for not believing him when he told her about Oliver's potential danger. He holds her.
  • Towards the end of the first season, after Marissa found out that her mother was having an affair with her ex-boyfriend Luke.
• In Pretty Little Liars it is revealed that Maya is dead, and her body was found in Emily's yard. Emily breaks down, crying into Spencer's chest.
• Season 3 Punky Brewster episode "Divorce, Anderson Style" ends with Punky crying into Cherie's chest after Allen leaves to move away with his to-be-divorced mother.
• The Queen's Gambit: When Beth visits Methuen again after Mr. Shaibel dies, she goes down to the basement, sees all of the news clippings of her there, and eventually finds a picture of her and Mr. Shaibel when they were younger. When she comes back outside and rejoins Jolene in the car, Beth starts sobbing, and Jolene pulls her into a hug.
• Revenge (2011):
  • Emily and Nolan have one in the season two finale after Emily finds Takeda's body on the floor and starts crying uncontrollably. Nolan just holds her.
  • Emily and Aiden, too, at the beginning of season two. It happens after Emily finds out that her mother tried to kill her when she was a young child.
• RoboCop: Prime Directives has a rarer father-son example: when Jimmy Murphy reconciles with his father ( RoboCop), he hugs him and sobs into the shorter man's shoulder. RoboCop is slightly more composed but just as moved.
• In the Sabrina the Teenage Witch episode "Whose So-Called Life Is It Anyway?" Salem fakes Hilda's death. (She's been selling his paintings as her own, and he figures that dead artists sell better.) When Hilda's then-boyfriend Brock hears the news, he comes over to the house and cries into Zelda's chest on the sofa.
  Zelda: Oh there, there. It's Okay to Cry… Just use this tissue instead of my blouse.
• In a flashback on Scandal, Fitz cries into Olivia's chest. Since Fitz is One Head Taller than her, Olivia uses a tree stump as a Scully Box.
• Shoestring: A woman sobs into Eddie's chest after he tells her that her husband has been exonerated of murder.
• Skins: Emily breaks down and cries into her father's chest after she discovers Naomi has cheated on her. His comforting her is heartwarming, though, especially when you consider how unsupportive her whole family was of her being gay.
• Smallville: Standard reaction on this show.
  • Chloe, Lana, and Lois all do this on occasion, Lois and Chloe usually to Clark and Lana to both Lex and Clark. Allison Mack, Chloe's actor, even says in the commentary of "Truth" that she loves those scenes because Tom Welling's chest makes the perfect headrest due to their height difference.
  • The motherly version of this trope occurs in one episode, as Clark openly sobs on Martha Kent's shoulder as the two mourn over Jonathan Kent's death.
• Sports Night: In the second season episode "And the Crowd Goes Wild", Natalie, upset over the fact she and Jeremy broke up (at the end of the previous episode, "Dana Get Your Gun"), refuses to be a part of turning over footage the station shot of a riot to the police. When Isaac asks her about it, Natalie claims not to be bothered by Jeremy breaking up with her, but then she gets upset about Jeremy getting his things out of her apartment, goes over to Isaac, and starts crying on him while he hugs her.
• In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Loss", when Troi loses her empathic power, she cries into Riker's chest while he comforts her.
• Star Trek: Picard: Elnor cries into Raffi's chest, with the latter taking on a motherly role and the former is a son figure who's mourning for his surrogate father Picard.
• Torchwood: Upon Jack's return at the end of "End of Days", Owen does this to Jack, out of combined relief and guilt.
• On the two-part election episode on the final season of The West Wing, when Annabeth tells Josh that Leo has just died, she immediately starts sobbing into his chest.
• The White Queen: A rare gender inversion occurs near the end of Episode 7. When Richard of Gloucester is heartbroken after the execution of his brother George of Clarence, he leans his head on the shoulder and chest of his wife Anne Neville and embraces her tightly, his body clinging on to hers as if he'd fall apart without her solace.
• The X-Files
  • In "Irresistible", Scully finally breaks down and cries in Mulder's arms after being rescued from a necrophiliac serial killer. It's actually an important moment of character development since beforehand she made a point of not showing weakness in front of him.
  • Scully sobs relieved tears into Mulder's chest in "Deadalive" after Mulder comes back from the dead and is in a coma.
• In one episode of Yo Gabba Gabba!, Brobee can be seen in the background sobbing into Foofa's chest after Muno knocks over his building blocks.

• In Dawn of a New Age: Oldport Blues, after using her telepathy to make a monster's head explode, Zia is so overwhelmed by what she's done that she collapses on the spot and bursts into tears. Ciro, her Childhood Friend, comes over and pulls her into a hug, letting her cry into his chest until she can recover.
• There are several instances of this in Shadowhunter Peril. They are all the angel Nicholas' doing.
• There is no GATE; we did not fight there: In the interlude *Let it All Out*, Adrianna is able to get over her personal disdain for demihumans after and allows Delilah to weep into her chest over the loss of her family. Their relationship grows considerably after this event.

Theatre

• In the 1998 filmed production of Cats, Gus the Theatre Cat cries into Jellylorum's chest as she gently leads him away, after his memories of his long-ago stage career become too nostalgic for him to bear.
• In Hamilton Eliza breaks down and cries into her son Philip's chest after he dies in Stay Alive (Reprise).
• In West Side Story, Maria breaks down and collapses into Tony's chest after bitterly confronting him over having killed her brother Bernardo.

Video Games

• Agarest Senki 2: Felenne does this to Weiss if you romance her. After revealing Weiss is responsible for her sister's death along with his inadvertent and accidental slaughter of the Sera , she goes into Berserker Tears acknowledging (and shifting between hating and liking) the fact that she's falling for him before asking Weiss to just hold her as she has a much-needed cry after bottling up for so long.
• BlazBlue:
  • BlazBlue: Continuum Shift: After Carl had a breakdown, Litchi offered to hug him and let him cry on her chest. Despite some Dramatic Irony about how Carl never knew that Litchi has in fact joined NOL and sided with the source of most of his anger, his father Relius, the fact that Litchi still wanted to genuinely ease his mind despite technically being his enemy definitely counts as a heartwarming moment.
  • The ending of BlazBlue: Central Fiction has Ragna, about to erase himself from existence, giving Jin and Noel a group hug with Noel crying onto Ragna's chest.
• Kohtaro's ending in Castle of Shikigami III has him crying in Sayo's arms following the defeat of Tsukiko. The narration even describes it as Kohtaro crying like a child.
• At the end of Act II in Diablo III, Leah has just been through a hellish vision courtesy of Azmodan, the last of the Evils that you have to take down, who reveals to her that he knows about the plan to trap him and his brothers in the Black Soulstone, and has sent all of his legions to the mortal realm from Arreat Crater to capture it. After relaying the info about the above to Tyrael after he breaks her out of this vision, she breaks down in his arms.
• Apparently, in Dragon Age: Origins, Zevran really wants to cry into Wynne's bosom. He brings this up at several opportunities. Wynne assures him that he's capable of crying well away from her bosom. It's sort of toying with the motherly idea; Wynne is a very grandmotherly figure in general, but Zevran is being shamelessly sexual when he suggests it.
• Seen in the Trespasser DLC of Dragon Age: Inquisition, but only if the female Inquisitor has romanced (and possibly married) Cullen. The Inquisitor is dying because of the Anchor on her hand, and during a final meeting with the three advisers before going off to confront the Qunari, it spikes painfully. Regardless of whether she reacts angrily or tearfully to her own suffering, Cullen immediately moves to comfort her, letting her huddle into his chest for this trope; if the sorrowful option of "I don't want to die!" is selected, this trope is especially present.
• Seen in this◊ promotional image for Final Fantasy X, depicting the scene in Macalania Woods where Yuna is forced to accept her duty as a summoner, and that she cannot live the idealized normal life in Zanarkand that Tidus describes.
• Final Fantasy XIII: Vanille breaks down a second time after Fang tricks her into revealing she lied about her amnesia. After That One Boss and an emotionally draining scene, Fang (instead of punching Vanille as we're lead to believe) simply bumps her forehead playfully and draws her into a hug of reassurance as the scene ends.
• Final Fantasy VII Remake: This happens between Cloud and Tifa in Chapter 14 if your affinity rating with the latter is high enough. Tifa, who had until this point maintained a relatively strong and forward-thinking attitude following the destruction of Sector 7, finally breaks down and cries into Cloud's chest (note that the above incident marks the second time that their homes and livelihoods have been taken from them). Cloud—himself being a Stoic Woobie with trouble connecting emotionally—finally opens up and hugs her in response; enough that Tifa soon has to interrupt him for holding her so tightly to the point of nearly hurting her.
• Kingdom Hearts III: Xion and Roxas break down crying into Axel's chest after a taxing boss battle; they weren't expecting to ever see each other, and Axel had even had his memories of Xion entirely erased. Hard to blame them after all that they went through.
• The ending of Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil has Lolo crying in Klonoa's arms and begging him not to go.
• Near the end of The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II, Rean Schwarzer finally unloads all of his grief towards Towa who hugs him and brings his head near her chest.
• The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild shows Zelda was unable to awaken her powers, fails her kingdom and her friends and breaks down crying in Link's arms.
• Luigi's done this more than once to Mario in the Mario & Luigi games.

  • Shepard can offer this option to Tali during her Loyalty Mission.
  • Shepard can do the same for Liara during Lair of the Shadow Broker.

    • In Innocent Sin, after having a flashback about her father, Maya Amano broke down and Tatsuya can opt to have her cry on his chest.
    • Then in Eternal Punishment, when Tatsuya reveals the Innocent Sin side, how he failed to stop Nyarlathotep and get the Maya on that side dead and the world destroyed, he's utterly troubled. EP!Maya (you, the protagonist) has the option to let him cry on her chest.
  • Persona 4:
    • When Rise cries after finding out the fact that her Idol Singer-self Risette is a part of her that she can't give up, the Protagonist is given the option to do this. Incidentally, picking this option leads to a Relationship Upgrade.
    • There's an option to let Yosuke cry into chest if you selected the correct dialogue option earlier in his Social Link. Unlike with Rise, this does not lead to a Relationship Upgrade. A piece of promotional artwork◊ for the anime seems to be the studio's take on this scene.
• Not shown, but Moira admits to this in Piss after she remembers and faces what she did, she is comforted by Ixele. Also not shown but her badly wounded and shaken friend Astis did this to Moira(mentioned in retrospect) when Moira found her bleeding and beaten in an alley and took her home to help her recover.
• SaGa Frontier: During Emelia's bad end, where she ends up killing Joker without knowing that it was her fiancee possessed by the Joker mask, she was completely left empty with her vengeance done and doesn't have any direction in life on top of her fiancee not coming back to life. She's holding back her tears and eventually declared that she couldn't take it anymore. Her best friends Annie and Liza approach her and lend her their shoulders for Emelia to cry on (implied since the screen blacked out and the sprite works couldn't show the extent of that).
• At the end of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, Ken embraces Dingo and sobs on his chest upon hearing that her father was secondhand.

Visual Novels

• CLANNAD, in Kappie's route of the Visual Novel, there are two CGs of Ryou doing this to Tomoya.
• In Code:Realize this occurs on Victor's route, except instead of the traditional woman cries into man's chest, it's actually Victor who cries into the protagonist's chest. Also, subverted, in that he doesn't actually cry into her chest but the effect is much the same with Cardia pulling Victor into an embrace with his head against her chest and comforts him. He trembles and sounds like he's pretty damn close to tears, too.
• Galaxy Angel has Tact doing this for Vanilla and Mint (both of whom are short enough to reach him right there) in the first and second games respectively. For Vanilla, it happens after her pet rabbit dies and she's unable to save it, and for Mint when she finally break down over the distress of temporarily losing her telepathy and feeling jealous when she saw Tact with Chitose.
• Katawa Shoujo has more than one girl doing this if you (as Hisao) play your cards right and build strong relationships with them. Specially poignant in the cases of Rin Tezuka and Emi Ibarazaki.
• In Magical Diary, the protagonist can end up soaking William's robes with tears after Damien breaks her heart. He's more a older brother figure than a romantic one, though, and the pair commiserates over the fact that Damien betrayed them both.
• The title character of Melody comes to the protagonist's apartment after Arnold kicks her out. The first thing she does is give him a hug, with her face buried in his chest.
• In Spirit Hunter: NG, young Ami cries and throws herself into her cousin Akira's arms after being rescued from Kakuya, letting out all her fear from the ordeal she suffered through.
• In Remember11, Satoru wakes up back at SPHIA being held in Utsumi's chest. She did that in order to calm "him" down after "he" blew a gasket and started destroying the kitchen/family room area.
• When They Cry:
  • In Higurashi: When They Cry's Tsumihoroboshi-hen arc, Rena cries into Keiichi's chest after shaking off the effects of Hinamizawa's Hate Plague and realizing how close she came to murdering all of her friends. The unusual circumstances don't make it any less heartwarming.
  • Battler from Umineko: When They Cry cries into Natsuhi's chest in Ep 1 after the murder of Kanon. It shows both how motherly and protective Natsuhi really is and Battler's surprisingly tender and emotional nature.
• Zero Escape trilogy:
  • Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors:
    • Clover does this to Junpei when she learns that Snake isn't actually dead.
    • Akane cries into her brother's chest after Junpei helps her escape the incinerator.
  • Zero Time Dilemma has a variant where "cry" part and "into chest" part happen at the same time but for different reasons. After Junpei dies protecting Akane and jumps to another timeline, she jumps after him and scolds him for his recklessness and bursts into tears as a reaction to watching him die. When she's done yelling, Junpei apologises for what happened and pulls out a ring to propose to her. Her reaction is to hug him while still crying.

Web Comics

• Near the end of Megan Kearney's Beauty and the Beast, after Argus (a.k.a. the Beast) finally becomes human again and is free from his enslavement by the castle, he breaks down sobbing into Beauty's chest in joy and relief. This is significant because as the Beast, he was incapable of tears.
• Lydia does this to Betelgeuse at one point in Cobweb and Stripes, but doesn't really explain what's got her so upset. The fact that he's genuinely concerned (if a little freaked out) is a mark of his Character Development.
• In El Goonish Shive, Ashley cries into Elliot's chest after she gets time to process the ordeal she went through during the "Sister 3" storyline.
• Erma: after Erma finds out that all the mean things that Felicia said to her were actually Widdle Wallace taking control of her body she becomes so relieved that all she can do is hold unto Felicia and sob.
• The stoical McGraw spends most of issue 51 of Giant Days holding in his grief over his father's death. Fortunately, when he does finally break, his girlfriend Susan is there for him.
• Girl Genius:
  • Bangladesh Dupree, of all people, does this at one point◊ when she believes she failed to save Baron Wulfenbach.
  • Trelawney Thorpe does it with Agatha comforting her after Wooster is killed.
• The Inexplicable Adventures of Bob! — Galatea to Bob, here.
• In Plume, Corrick comforts Vesper after her father dies.
• Questionable Content: May ends up doing this to Marigold when she learns how much money her friends raised for her buxom new body.
  May: I can't deal with this!
  Momo: May...
  Marigold: It's okay. That's what they're there for.
• Selkie: After witnessing her daughter using eye lasers and getting dragged into a meeting with the CIA, Andi wants nothing more than to find a chest to cry into.
  Andi: The only fully-formed thought I can process right now is an escalating urge to go fling myself into my girlfriend's bosom and panic-cry.
• Sticky Dilly Buns parodies the trope somewhat in the last panel here. (It's happened before with these two, but this is the most detail-subverting case to date.) Dillon (disguised as "Dilla") insists on crying into the chest of Ruby (disguised as "Rudy"). As Dillon is taller than Ruby (even without heels), the pose comes out wrong for the usual effect — and Ruby really, really doesn't want to play a "motherly" role. Given that Dillon's crying verges on Inelegant Blubbering, any heartwarming is ruthlessly averted.

• Can You Spare a Quarter?: The 12-year old street boy Jamie suffers a complete breakdown when Graham asks him how he ended up in the streets and cries out his history on Graham's shoulder.
• In Demo Reel, a very high Rebecca breaks down crying in Tacoma's arms after ruining a fair few takes screaming about her abusive family.
• In Dream High School on Page 34, the character who runs into you crying is probably crying into your chest, though it's not specified.
• In The Lady Voltigeur, Claire cried out so much on Nathalie because of her recent loss that her body gave out and she fell asleep after just a few minutes of doing so.
• In Wedding Peach Abridged, Yuri gets annoyed that Jama-P keeps doing that to Momoko... when she can't do it herself.

Western Animation

• Avatar: The Last Airbender: Upon their reunion in the finale, Zuko breaks down and sobs into Iroh's shoulder.
• Batman: The Animated Series: In the episode "Growing Pains", Robin aids a teenage girl named Annie. She has lost her memories and is being stalked relentlessly by a strange man who begs her to come home. After his third appearance, she breaks down and cries into Robin's chest. It is given an element of Squick when the truth comes out and it's revealed that the man stalking Annie is Clayface who has survived his last battle with Batman. It turns out he needed time to recuperate so he used some of his clay to make a person who would be on the lookout for anyone who might find him. That person was Annie. She was supposed to just look around and come back, but she lost her memories when she left. Basically, Clayface broke down and cried into Robin's chest because he(?) didn't want to be reunited with himself and Robin had a crush on a pile of sentient sludge. Robin takes the news extremely well. He even begs Clayface to bring her back after she launches herself into him and dissolves.
• Bravestarr: A rare male-on-male example at the end of "The Price"; Brad cries into Bravestarr's chest in sorrow that he didn't tell him about Jay's downward spiral earlier.
• Captain Planet and the Planeteers:
  • In "Mind Pollution", Verminous Skumm creates a new, highly addictive drug and manages to hook Linka and her cousin Boris, who overdoses. When Wheeler pulls her away from Boris' body, Linka throws herself on his shoulder, sobbing as she admits the drug cost her her cousin and laments that she can't stand the agony of withdrawal.
  • In "'Teers in the Hood", the team goes undercover after one of Gi's friends, David, is caught in the crossfire during a gang war. When Gi finds the man responsible (who has by this point been involved in new atrocities), she uses her waterpower in an effort to drown him. Wheeler manages to talk her out of it by saying that this kind of violence isn't her way. Afterwards, she breaks down on his chest as he hugs her and tries to calm her. Unlike the example with Linka, this one contains no Ship Tease; it's strictly platonic comforting.
• CatDog: In "CatDog Food" and "Curiosity Almost Killed the Cat", Cat cries into Dog's chest while apologizing to him.
• Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers: After Chip is apparently killed in the episode "Seer No Evil", Gadget cries into Monty's chest, as Dale stands with tears streaming down his face. Needless to say, Chip is Not Quite Dead.
• Penfold sobs pitifully into Danger Mouse's chest after the two had gone through hell to obtain a rugby ball filled with secret plans, only for Colonel K to assign them the mission of getting dummy plans into Greenback's hands. Where are the dummy plans? In the rugby ball our heroes went through the story arc to obtain.
• DuckTales (1987): During the flashback in "Top Duck", Launchpad's mother Birdy tearfully buries her face in her husband Ripcord's chest as their son leaves home.
• Frosty the Snowman: Karen cries into Santa's chest when he finds her mourning over the melted Frosty.
• Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie: Arnold cries on a comatose Miles when he realizes that the Corazón, which had been lost, was needed to cure his parents of their sleeping sickness.
• Justice League: In the episode "Hereafter", Lois Lane ends up sobbing into Lex Luthor's chest just after tearing him a new one for showing up to Superman's funeral.
• The Legend of Korra:
  • Amon and his Equalists ambush and easily subdue Korra. Amon states that while he can't de-bend her now, as that would only make her a martyr, he proceeds to psychologically rip her to pieces. By the time he's left and Tenzin arrives, Korra, who is utterly terrified, breaks down into his chest.
  • It happens again with Asami and Mako at the end of episode 7, after it turns out Asami's father was an Equalist.
• The Lion Guard: Rani cries into Kion's chest when her grandmother Queen Janna dies.
• The Loud House: In the episode "City Slickers," Lori does this with Bobby after her disastrous first day out in Great Lakes City.
• Ozzy & Drix: In the episode "Tricky Ricardo", Maria cries into Drix's chest after she kicks her estranged, troublemaking brother Ricky out of her apartment.
• Punky Brewster: The episode "Punky, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs" had Henry put into a deep sleep after eating an apple pie made from a spiked apple. When Brandon's lick on Henry's face doesn't wake him, Punky sadly kisses him on the cheek and starts sobbing into his chest. Fortunately, Henry does wake up (presumably from Punky's kiss).
• The Ren & Stimpy Show: Ren has these moments a lot with his emotional crutch Stimpy.
• Rick and Morty: Morty cries into his grandfather Rick's chest after he is nearly assaulted in the bathroom in the episode "Meeseeks and Destroy" by the Jellybean King. Rick (who finally was having fun in Morty's adventure) comforts Morty by making the best of things and fixing the place up. Just as they leave, Rick pulls out his raygun and proceeds to ''annihilate'' the Jellybean King.
• Rugrats: In the episode "The Big House," Wiseguy cries into Big Justin's chest after he tells Tommy about a friend of his who tried to escape from daycare, only to get transferred to another daycare after he got caught.

• Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu sobbing into rink-mate Javier Fernandez's chest at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.◊ It's not uncommon for skaters to cry for catharsis after intense performances, even successful ones. There's a reason the area where they wait for scores is called the "kiss and cry". However, on top of having just successfully defended his Olympic gold on painkillers and an injured ankle, Hanyu was blindsided with the news of Fernandez's retirement, being the first person to know. The two were rivals, rinkmates, and friends who challenged each other on their way to the podium.
