This retelling of the old fairy tale Beauty and the Beast has Homages to Jean Cocteau's 1946 film, but in its tone diverges from both versions and becomes its own story. Belle is a bookish lass in a rural French village who lives with her genial dad Maurice, who tinkers with various inventions. She would be a total outcast if not for her loveliness, and the proud hunter Gaston wants her simply for her beauty as a trophy wife - but she has no interest in an oafish Jerk Jock.

When Maurice doesn't return from a trip, Belle searches for and finds him in the hidden palace of a creature who imprisoned him when he sought shelter there. She offers herself in his place and the monster accepts. "The Beast" is actually a cursed human Prince who hopes her love will break the enchantment on him and his many servants, who were transformed into living furniture. With time limited, the Prince must tame his temper and Belle must learn to see the goodness beneath his exterior...

The film proved to be a great financial and critical success and is considered one of the greatest films of the Disney Renaissance. It became notable as the first animated film to be nominated for "Best Picture" at the Academy Awards.note  It was adapted into a stage musical in 1994. The feature also spawned a live-action educational TV series called Sing Me a Story with Belle, two Direct to Video midquels by decade's end, and is featured in the Kingdom Hearts series. In September 2020, the first ride based on the film opened at the Tokyo Disney resort as part of its Fantasyland expansion.

    Tropes # to B 
  • 2D Visuals, 3D Effects:
    • During "Belle" there's a wagon that's very obvious CG.
    • The ballroom was a huge step forward in animation techniques. The scene still impresses with the way the traditionally-animated characters maintain a precise perspective with the CG background.
    • The dancing forks during "Be Our Guest" are clearly CGI.
    • The animation in the inserted number "Human Again" is also different from the traditional ink and paint of the rest of the film. along with the rubbery movement of the rose table it stands out as not quite fitting with the rest of the film.
  • Abomination Accusation Attack: Gaston doesn't believe that the Beast even exists. When Belle proves him wrong, he changes his position to accusing him of eating children - never mind that the Beast has been around for a long time and the only person who had been missing was Belle herself!
  • Act of True Love: When the Beast allows Belle to leave the castle to rescue her father—even if it means she might not return and the spell won't be broken—it means he truly loves her.
  • Actor Allusion:
    • Cogsworth is a lot like David Ogden Stiers' M*A*S*H character, Major Charles Emerson Winchester III; in fact, like much like Charles, Stiers gave Cogsworth an accent to emphasize what an uptight snob he can be.
    • In the fantasy computer game King's Quest VI which said series references and spoofs all kinds of fantasy, fairy tales and mythology. Robbie Benson plays the protagonist, Prince Alexander, who at one point meets the game's own interpretation of Beauty and the Beast. One Non Standard Game Over has Alexander turning into a beast himself.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Belle hits him with a snowball, the Beast has an amused smirk as he prepares to return the favor with a bigger snowball. The film implies this is the first time he's had fun in a while.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In the original book, the Beast is a perfectly nice young man who did nothing to deserve getting cursed. In this version, he brings the curse on himself through his selfishness and cruelty, and is very mean to just about everyone (at least before he comes out of his shell and learns how to be a better person).
  • Adapted Out:
    • Belle's vain and selfish sisters from the original story since they were there mainly to demonstrate an antiquated moral lesson.
    • The reason the father was imprisioned was because he was trespassing on the castle grounds to pick a rose from the garden because Belle asked for one as a gift. Here, it's used as the magical countdown clock but the fact that it's a rose, has no narrative signficance.
  • Adult Fear:
    • Maurice has to watch as Belle arranges to be kept prisoner in his stead, all while he cries for her to just escape and leave him to his fate. He spends the rest of the movie trying to rescue her.
    • Once Belle and Maurice are reunited? Belle faces the fear of having her father taken away from her, as Gaston blackmails her into either becoming his puppet-wife or getting him thrown in the local asylum. She takes a third option and proves her father is telling the truth... but they're imprisoned and the townspeople go Storming the Castle.
  • Advertised Extra: Many covers feature the Featherduster, a character with three and a half minutes of screen time, next to the main characters.
  • Aesop Collateral Damage: The castle staff, tranformed into objects until their prince learns his lesson and if he fails, it dooms them as well. The Broadway version alters the back-story to show that the staff was also cursed because they had a role in letting prince become a spoiled brat in the first place, however it still doesn't justify turning a seven year old into a teacup.
  • After-Action Patch-Up: After Beast saves Belle from the wolves, she tends to him and they have a much needed talk.
  • The Ageless: Implied to be the case with Beast and his staff, as the Beast's adult human form is shown in the prologue as a portrait and Chip couldn't have been conceived after that point.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: The three blonde girls are desperately attracted to Gaston who is such a tall, dark strong and handsome brute. Inverted with Belle, who doesn't like Gaston and also hates the Beast when he's in his "bad" phase; it's only when he starts to be kinder and gentler that she falls in love with him.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Both Belle and Maurice are seen as outliers by the rest of the villagers; her father because he's an absent-minded tinkerer, Belle because she's intelligent, a voracious reader and not at all suited to provincial life.
  • Ambiguously Gay:
    • Cogsworth is involved in several questionable incidents, including a rather awkward moment with Maurice. Ever since David Ogden Stiers, who voiced Cogsworth, came out of the closet, the effect has only amplified.
    • LeFou is a little too into Gaston, though considering how he was drooling over the Bimbettes, he could also be bisexual.
      • LeFou has what can be considered Disney's first Gay Love Song in the number 'Gaston': "Ask any Tom, Dick, or Stanley, and they'll tell you which team they'd prefer to be on..." and that's not the only lyric that deserves a mention.
  • Amusing Injuries: This is LeFou's life. Interestingly, the moment when Gaston only threatens to hit LeFou (when talking to Monsieur D'Arque, the asylum keeper) is much more alarming than the rest of Gaston's abuse.
  • Anachronism Stew:
    • The flatware form an Eiffel Tower during the "Be Our Guest" music number. The movie takes place in the latter half of the 18th century, but the Eiffel Tower wasn't built until towards the end of the 19th.
    • The use of Wagner's "Bridal Chorus" (composed in 1850) in Gaston's failed marriage attempt.
    • The featherdusters dancing a Can Can during Be Our Guest. That style of dance did not appear until 1830.
  • And I Must Scream: In the stage play, some of the servants have apparently become completely non-human; it's implied that they all will become inanimate if the curse is not broken in time.
  • And That's Terrible: Monsieur D'Arque's response to Gaston's plan to force Belle to marry him:
    "Oh, that is despicable... I love it!"
  • Angel Face, Demon Face:
    • The Beast's design changes considerably throughout the film. When we first see him storm in on Maurice, he's a monster; he walks on all fours, his fur bristles near-constantly, and he barely wears clothes, but by the end of the movie his face is softer and more human, he's fully dressed and walks upright. His voice also changes from a low snarl to a much more gentle, softer tone. The only thing in his design that doesn't change are his eyes, which not only remain a specific shade of blue but also keep the same basic shape when in both forms.
    • Gaston starts off as the strapping and handsome village hunter but becomes progressively less upright, his hair wilder, and his overall demeanor increasingly animalistic. In the final fight between him and the Beast, it's the latter who moves in a more human way.
    • The castle itself gets this treatment quite literally. When the Beast transforms back to his human form, the gargoyles on the castle roof turn into white statues of angels.
  • Angry Chef: The Stove is one of the castle’s most formidable enchanted objects and drives out the attackers with flames and an Evil Laugh. He is actually quite nice to Belle, though, having missed a guest to serve food to.
  • Angry Mob Song: The villagers grab their torches and pitchforks to storm Beast's castle. It's even called "The Mob Song".
  • Animal Reaction Shot: Phillipe was less than pleased with the choice of paths Maurice takes while in the forest.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: The Beast's many servants are humans transformed into objects, who generally don't move or speak when strangers drop by.
  • Animation Bump: The Beast has incredibly fluid and expressive facial animation, perhaps more so than any other character.
  • Answer Cut:
    • The last line of the prologue is "...for who could ever learn to love a Beast?" The next scene shows Belle approaching the village.
    • Lumière tells the Beast that he “doesn’t have time to be timid” with Belle. While he says this, the shot expands so the Rose is in focus.
  • Anti-Intellectualism: Nobody considers thinking to be an untrustworthy action like Gaston!
    Gaston: LeFou, I'm afraid I've been thinking...
    LeFou: A dangerous pastime-
    Gaston: -I know!
  • Anti-Villain: The Beast starts off as this. He acts malicious for the first part of the film, but he's not acting out of evil intentions as much as he's consumed by anger and despair at being trapped in the body of a beast while his chance to regain his humanity is slowly ticking away. The scene where he saves Belle from the wolves is the part that makes it clear to the audience that he's not a villain. Glen Keane, the lead animator of Beast, is quoted on this in The Disney Villain;
    "He probably wouldn't have minded killing Maurice. That was the extent where someone like the Beast, who had the potential to be good, could become a villain. The Beast was pitying himself, frustrated, so he felt justified in treating the father that way, and when he comes back, Belle is crying — his actions do cause people pain — and he starts to get a glimmer that he's not entirely comfortable with the role of a villain... He had incredible limitations — it's kind of like taking the villain and the hero and wrapping them up into one body."
  • Artistic License: In the DVD commentary, the creators admit that all the dancing items in "Be Our Guest" throws the logic of the movie through a loop, but it was worth it for that number.
  • Artistic License – Gun Safety: No one fails gun safety like Gaston! Gaston, supposedly the best hunter in town, declares his intent to marry Belle by pointing his gun at her. Not a good idea. It is true that his blunderbuss had recently been discharged and should have been empty, but later in the film he demonstrates that the blunderbuss is fully automatic, which presents another problem entirely. This is in addition to his first scene showing him birding in the middle of town, where any missed shot could end up hitting someone down the street.
  • Ascended Extra: In the stage musical, the feather duster and the wardrobe are given bigger roles and more developed personalities. They are also named Babette and Madame de la Grande Bouche, respectively. This conflicts with the direct-to-video sequel where the feather duster is named Fifi.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Belle reads romantic adventure stories about far-off places and magic spells, while wishing for adventure in the great wide somewhere. She gets her wish, however unexpectedly.
  • Ascended Meme: Walt Disney World guests can "try the grey stuff" for themselves; it is as delicious as Lumiere claims.
  • Attack! Attack... Retreat! Retreat!:
    • During the song "Human Again", the cushion dog chases a cat-rug into the ballroom where a bunch of brooms are sweeping. The brooms promptly chase the dog out of the ballroom for tracking in muddy paw prints.
    • During the invasion of the castle, LeFou and a small group of villagers chase the cushion dog into the kitchen. One look at the knives and hot stove poised to attack and the villagers scramble out of the kitchen.
  • Audience Surrogate: Both Belle and the Beast serve as this. Belle's dreams of "Adventure in the great, wide, somewhere" are easy for viewers to relate to, as are her loneliness and sense of not fitting in with her fellow villagers. But the Beast turns out to be surprisingly relatable too. It's been confirmed by the filmmakers that he was written to react to his curse the same way most people would: with anger and depression.
  • Award-Bait Song: Named after the movie, "Beauty and the Beast" ties with "A Whole New World" and "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" for these song types for the early 90s of Disney that draw in accolades.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Cogsworth and Lumiere are at odds, and Mrs. Potts doesn't approve of Cogsworth being a stick in the mud, but they have each other's backs. The clock and candlestick independently come up with plans to protect the castle, and Cogsworth stabs LeFou when the latter tries to melt Lumiere. Lumiere thanks him with a Smooch of Victory, with Cogsworth's disgust being Think Nothing of It. When it seems their master has died and the crush remains unbroken, Cogsworth takes a moment to comfort Mrs. Potts.
  • Back from the Dead: Gaston's knife wound actually did mortally wound Beast at the end, but luckily reversing the spell revived him as well as making him human again. Or maybe it's Only Mostly Dead, with The Power of Love simply resolving the balance.
  • Backstab Backfire: Gaston is spared by the Beast, and then he stabs him in the back causing Gaston to fall off the ledge.
  • Badass Adorable: All of the enchanted servants of Beast's castle. They may be living inanimate objects, but they are far from helpless. The mob of villagers learn this the hard way after getting painfully ejected from the castle.
  • Badass Baritone: The Beast again — the thing is pretty odd if we consider that Robby Benson's real voice is more like a tenor (the production crew mixed Benson's lines with the growls of various wild animals). This is mentioned by Benson himself in a making-of special; his natural speaking voice is closer to the Beast's baritone, but directors have constantly asked him to pitch it higher because they think a Tenor Boy would make a better Love Interest. It's actually kind of a shock when he speaks candidly.
  • Badass Cape:
    • Beast wears a purple cape at the height of his beastliness, and only a cape. Once he regains his humanity (thanks to Belle's influence,) he switches to Sharp-Dressed Man.
    • Gaston also wears one during the final confrontation with the Beast because these are things to wear when traveling.
  • Bad Boss: Gaston is a warped variation. Even though he is shown to be a Grade A jerk in the village, and makes no effort to hide it in his villain song, the villagers genuinely love him and don't follow him out of fear.
    Lefou: "Ev'ry guy here'd love to be you, Gaston. Even when taking your lumps."
  • Bandage Wince: The Beast fights off a pack of wolves without complaint, but howls when Belle tries to clean his wounds afterward.
  • Bannister Slide: Cogsworth does this with a pair of scissors to save Lumiere from LeFou burning him with a torch.
  • Bar Brawl: There's one in the tavern during "Gaston," but it breaks back up amiably after doing its part to show off how awesome Gaston is.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: The Beast; due to the size and shape of his legs and feet, he cannot wear shoes.
  • Bat Scare: Maurice's horse runs off in fear when the two of them startle a flock of bats into flight.
  • Battle in the Rain: Beast and Gaston's climatic duel takes place in a raging thunderstorm.
  • Beast and Beauty: Since it's a retelling of the tale, we have the beautiful Belle and her beastly love interest, who struggles with not acting like a beast.
  • Beast Man: The prince was transformed into a horned beast creature.
  • Beautiful All Along: The prince transforms back into his handsome human guise. Atypically, Belle was dismayed at the change until she looked into his eyes and saw that he was the same person she fell in love with.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Beauty comes across as more of a neutral force here. Belle is a good person, the Beast became what he is as karmic punishment for selfishness, and the corrupt asylum director Monsieur D'Arque is very sickly looking. The "beautiful enchantress", on the other hand, is morally dubious, and Gaston is handsome but wicked. In fact, Gaston takes advantage of this trope when he convinces the villagers to kill the "ugly, monstrous" Beast.
  • Beauty to Beast: The Prince is a handsome human transformed into a beast to reflect his inner selfishness.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For:
    • As the Beast tells Maurice when catching him in his castle early on: "I'll give you a place to stay!"
    • Belle found her life in the village terribly unfulfilling and wished for some grand adventure and found herself in a life-and-death struggle.
    • In the Broadway production song "Home", Belle sings "and to think I complained of that dull provincial town".
  • Beneath the Mask:
    • Despite his rugged, handsome appearance Gaston is not as nice as he seems to be.
    • The Beast isn't as bad as he appears.
  • Benevolent Monsters: The Beast starts out more or less as a monster in every measure but under Belle's influence he begins to show such qualities as kindness, thoughtfulness, selflessness and table manners over time.
  • Berserk Button: The Beast forbids Belle to go into the West Wing and completely flies into a rage when he finds her trespassing there.
  • Beta Couple: Lumiere and Babette, especially in the stage musical, are an affectionate and teasing couple without the lead pair's drama.
  • Better Off with the Bad Guys: Belle is treated as nothing more than eye candy by most of the townsfolk and scorned for her interest in books. After agreeing to live with the Beast in exchange for her father's freedom, she is delighted to discover that the Beast owns a massive library. All of the Beast's servants treat her respectfully and are happy to have her around. She only goes back to the village when she sees that her father is risking his health searching for her. In the end, she moves into the castle permanently as the Prince's wife.
  • Beware the Cute Ones: Even the cushion dog gets to participate in the castle fight. It steals LeFou's shoe, leading him and a crowd of angry villagers into the kitchen. That gives the Stove a perfect position to show off a cutlery arsenal and intense flames.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: There are things in the Beast's Castle you should never piss off if you value your life. Mrs Potts is one such thing. Lumiere is another. Cogsworth is a third - especially when armed with scissors.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The Beast when he shows up in the nick of time to rescue Belle from the wolves.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: A truly EPIC one just after the Beast's transformation; there's a light show and magic sparks and the castle transforms!
  • Big Eater: No one puts away five dozen eggs a day at breakfast like Gaston!
  • Big "WHAT?!":
    • The Beast when Cogsworth nervously states Belle's not coming to dinner when the Beast demanded her to.
    • Cogsworth when the Beast tells him he released let Belle go then Lumiere and Mrs. Potts when Cogsworth informs them.
  • Bilingual Bonus:
    • "LeFou" can either mean "the jester" or "the madman" in French. "Lumiere" means "light".
    • In the stage adaptation, "Madame de la Grande Bouche" roughly translates into "Madame of the Big Mouth".
    • The Latin motto on the stained-glass window at the beginning translates to "He conquers, who conquers himself." It foreshadows Beast's character development.
    • Preliminary storyboards for the movie established that Gaston's last name is Legume, which means "vegetable".
    • "Belle," as noted in the movie, means "beauty" in French.
    • In the Brazilian Portuguese version, Cogsworth is called Horloge, which means "clock" in French.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Gaston is a loud and proud hunter who is great fun at parties.
  • Book Dumb: Gaston won't read books without pictures and is bad at chess, but he proves very manipulative.
  • Book-Ends: The stained glass windows of the castle tell the backstory and then the epilogue.
  • Bookworm: Belle's love of books marks her out as peculiar.
  • Bottomless Magazines: No one fires three-round bursts from a single-shot blunderbuss like Gaston!
  • Brainless Beauty: The Bimbettes, the blonde triplets who fawn over Gaston, certainly qualify as such; hence their name.
  • Brainy Brunette: Belle; the only female character with brown hair is the bookworm.
  • Breakout Character: Chip's voice actor, Bradley Pierce, was so popular with the filmmakers that his tiny role was greatly expanded; he replaced another character, a music box, for the most part (the music box was only relegated to a cameo in the final version, specifically right before the battle).
  • Break-Up/Make-Up Scenario: Beast lashes out at Belle when she enters the West Wing. She flees the castle but is attacked by wolves in the forest, until Beast (who feels remorseful for yelling at her) comes to save her life. She has the opportunity to claim her freedom and leave him for dead, but instead she brings the Beast back to the castle and cares for him. This is a turning point in their relationship.
  • Brick Joke: After Maurice leaves to save Belle, Gaston tells Le Fou to not leave the spot by their house until they come back. When they do eventually arrive, we see Le Fou, blue from frostbite, finally leaves his spot.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Beast is in a depression and given to moping around in his dark bedroom. Belle is a Nice Girl whose silky personality conceals the inner steel needed to deal with such a person.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: The Beast is a strong, seven foot tall creature who takes on a wolf pack single-handed but as Belle works to draw out his humanity again, we can see he does have a decent soul within.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Gaston fighting the Beast atop the castle, toying with him rather than bringing out the shotgun. Because of his ego, Gaston has some reason to think he's as much of a dragon as his victim is. But the fight is over in mere seconds once Beast starts fighting back for real.
  • Bungling Inventor: Belle's father's first scene is a ruckus in his workshop.
  • Burp of Finality: A huge treasure chest swallows an intruder whole, licks its lips and burps.
  • Busby Berkeley Number: "Be Our Guest" involves synchronized silverware constructing an Eiffel Tower, among other things.
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • Cogsworth regularly suffers comic incidents. This is especially evident in the Updated Re-release, where his entire role in the added musical number seems to consist of nothing but him being picked on.
    • LeFou, Gaston's loyal sidekick is used as his personal punching bag every so often.
    • Maurice. His inventions misfire, he gets lost in the woods, he gets captured by a beast, his daughter takes his place, when he tries to get Gaston and the villagers to help him, they throw him out in the snow and later they even try to lock him up in the nuthouse. This guy gets a raw deal.
  • Buxom Is Better: Inverted as near every female minor character in the movie is clearly bustier than Belle, yet she is seen as more desirable by generally everyone.
    ''It is no wonder that her name means 'beauty'; her looks have got no parallel'.

    Tropes C to D 
  • Call-Back: After being transformed, the Beast slashes a portrait of his human self with his claws. Forty-two minutes of the movie’s runtime later, Belle comes across the damaged painting. The prologue feels so different from the rest of the film that seeing such a direct reference to it is quite unexpected.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: The climax of the film only happens because neither the Beast or Belle can confess their feelings for one another until it's almost too late.
  • Captain Obvious: Lumiere, upon being asked by Belle if the castle truly had a library.
    Belle: You have a library?
    Lumiere: Of course! With books!
  • Carpet of Virility: Gaston.
    "And every last inch of me's covered with hair!"
  • Character Development:
    • The Beast is all about character development; in fact you can tell which mid-quel takes place when based off how much of a jerk the Beast is at the time.
    • Gaston goes through a darker version; he starts out as an oafish buffoon, becomes kind of an ass, and then finally turns into an all-out, terrifying villain.
  • Character Tics:
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • Maurice's automatic wood-chopping machine (later used to free Belle and Maurice from the cellar).
    • The Magic Mirror. The first two times it’s mentioned in the film, it doesn’t have any importance to the plot. However, the third time, it serves as the reason Beast lets Belle go. It also later proves that the Beast does indeed exist to Gaston, which starts the climax of the film.
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • Two minor examples: the cook (the enchanted oven) is briefly introduced with only one speaking line, but it is he who finally routs the castle invaders later on and scares them and LeFou out of the castle just in time for Gaston to reach The Beast's room. Then there’s the Featherduster, also introduced with one line, later ends up distracting Lumiere and allowing Belle to escape her room.
    • Chip. Out of the named servants, he’s the one with the least focus and impact on the plot...that is until the climax, where he gets Belle and Maurice our of their cells. If that hadn’t happened, the Beast would have died to Gaston before Belle could have broken the curse.
  • Chest Monster: A literal version of the trope appears in the castle ambushing the unwelcome village mob scene, where a carpet rolls up a man and bounces him into a live chest, which then shuts and licks its lips. And burps.
  • Chirping Crickets: In the deleted scene featuring "Human Again," Cogsworth makes a lame "man or beast" joke with a small cricket chirp as the only response.
  • Climbing Climax: The final fight between the Beast and Gaston is on the castle's roofs because Beast is trying to get away from the aggressive home-invader. It also sets up the Disney Villain Death.
  • Closed Door Rapport: Belle and the Beast have an angry discussion through her door when she refuses to come to dinner.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience:
    • There are only two characters who prominently wear blue: Belle, which symbolizes how different she is from the town, and the Beast after his Character Development, which symbolizes how he’s turned himself into someone Belle could fall in love with.
    • When we first see the Beast, he’s wearing a dark red cape which highlights his "darker" moods and tendencies. Later on he switches to royal blue, which highlights his eyes. As a result, while this is the same character, we can see just how much he's changed.
    • Gaston is a hunter who wears red and black, the colors of blood and death.
  • Come to Gawk: The Beast thought Maurice had. At that point in the film he was still acting like a jerk.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Belle does this, seemingly on purpose as a means of messing with Gaston.
    Gaston: Here, picture this: A rustic hunting lodge, my latest kill roasting on the fire, and my little wife massaging my feet, while the little ones play on the floor with the dogs. We'll have six or seven.
    Belle: Dogs?
    Gaston: No, Belle! Strapping boys, like me!
  • Cool Horse: Phillipe. He's no battle charger, but he comes to get Belle when her father is captured by the Beast, and serves as her loyal helper when she needs to escape — and, when the Beast is badly injured, when she needs to get back.
  • Costume Porn: Belle's magnificent yellow ball gown for her Dance of Romance with the Beast, among other slightly less fancy dresses. Then there is Beast's formal blue suit, which makes him look a lot more like a prince.
  • Covered in Mud: After Belle rejects Gaston's marriage proposal, Gaston falls over and lands in the pigs' mud hole, and in front of the whole town too.
  • Covers Always Lie:This poster shows Belle in a pink and purple version of her blue and white peasant dress, the castle has blue shingles instead of red, and features rose bushes, where the only roses seen in the film is the single enchanted one.
  • Creative Closing Credits: In the 3D re-release, the credits are accompanied with design sketches of various characters and scenes in the film.
  • Crowd Song: "Belle", "Gaston" and its reprise, "Be Our Guest" and "The Mob Song" all have many people involved. "Belle" is so crowded toward the end (right after the three blondes Squee! over Gaston) that it manages to be in two keys almost at once. It's also so crowded that Gaston can't reach Belle before she leaves town ("Please let me through!")
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Obviously the audience knows Maurice is telling the truth about the beast holding his daughter hostage, but the villagers don’t. They just call him “Crazy Old Maurice.” When Belle proves the Beast’s existence, the villagers horrified gasps can be heard and Gaston is clearly astounded Maurice wasn’t hallucinating.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Beast is willing to let Gaston beat him to death because he feels he will never break the curse. Then he sees that Belle has returned, giving him something to live for. He immediately shows Gaston just how stupid it is to pick a fight with a massive beast.
    • The servants vs. the villagers. The servants win effortlessly, with some handy use of implements.
  • Curse Escape Clause: The Beast will return to human form if he truly loves someone who loves him as a beast before his magic rose runs out of petals.
  • Curtain Camouflage: Lumiere meets Babette, the feather duster, for some romance behind a curtain.
  • Dance of Romance: The iconic ballroom dance between Beast (in his royal blue suit) and Belle (in her yellow ball gown). By the end of it they are truly in love but they don't say it yet.
  • Dances and Balls: The private dance between Beast and Belle was considered a technical achievement at the time and still looks great today.
  • Dark Reprise: While “Gaston” is a Villain Song, it certainly isn’t dark. It’s a lighthearted, fun song that establishes Gaston’s relationship with the town. The reprise, however, has ominous lyrics about Belle’s father.
  • Dark World: The Beast's Castle under the enchantment is dark, gloomy, and the statues are demonic. The West Wing takes it Up to Eleven; the filmmakers described it as "a descent into his own personal hell." This is inverted after the enchantment breaks.
  • Darker and Edgier: In a rare aversion of Disneyfication, the Disney version is darker than the original fairy tale! For instance, the Beast had already become a gentleman by the time he met Belle.
  • Death's Hourglass: The glassed rose represents how much time Beast has to break the curse. It overlaps with The Tragic Rose.
  • Deconstruction:
    • Gaston is a deconstruction of the type of hero that appears in Grimm's fairy tales: handsome and adventurous hunter/woodsman, loved son in both his world and his own mind out to court his fair maiden, who, as far as he thinks, should be owed him and fall into his arms. He encounters monsters and never bothers to think they're anything but evil, since the original stories weren't inclined to have that belief either. Even his jerkassness is a characteristic of Grimm's heroes, who were often known to do sadistic things to defeat their enemies. However, the movie shows the inherent wickedness these qualities brought together in the wrong way could create.
    • The Beast is a deconstruction of the character from the original tale who was kind and gentlemanly despite his monstrous appearance. Here the loss of his humanity as well as the impossible nature of his task only serve to drive him deep into depression and seclusion. He gives up hope of ever breaking the spell and begins to abandon standard human behavior and act more like the animal he appears to be: he has mostly ceased to wear clothes, hunts for his food, and has become fiercely territorial. If Belle hadn't come along exactly when she did, he would have never broken the spell and become an animal completely.
  • Defrosting Ice King: The Beast's Character Development is from 'aloof and hostile beast' into 'gentle and loving prince'.
  • Denied Food as Punishment: When Belle rejects Beast's offer to dine with him, he commands "If she doesn't eat with me, then she doesn't eat at all!" However, the servants put very little effort into enforcing that proclamation as the next scene is "Be Our Guest".
  • Department of Redundancy Department:
    LeFou: In a spitting match nobody spits like Gaston.
    Gaston: I'm especially good at expectorating!
  • Despair Event Horizon:
    • The narration in the beginning explains that the Beast crossed it years ago when he gave up all hope of ever becoming human again.
    • After The Beast lets Belle go, he howls in anguish and frustration, not expecting that she'll ever come back, thus crossing it again. He's perfectly willing to let Gaston kill him until Belle comes back, but then he starts hoping again.
  • Did You Actually Believe...?: Gaston implements this perfectly when facing off against Beast, sneering and mocking him:
    Gaston: Were you in love with her, Beast?! Did you honestly think she'd want you when she could have someone like me?!
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Gaston plan had Belle having to choose between marrying him, or allowing her father to be taken to the asylum for believing in the beast. He never expected Belle to be able to prove the Beast indeed exists.
    • When preparing for dinner, the Beast is so caught up in his anxiety that he didn’t realize Belle probably won’t want to dine with her captor.
  • Digital Destruction:
    • The 2010/2016 Blu-ray and DVD releases of the film has an unusual glitch altering the ending of the "Something There" number. Originally, it ended with the objects watching Belle and the Beast read by the fireplace. Since the extended version follows this song with a scene of the objects cleaning the castle and the song "Human Again," it now closed with the objects in the hallway, closing the doors to give Belle and the Beast some alone time. Selecting the "Original Theatrical Version" on the 2010/2016 Blu-Ray and DVD changes the ending of the song to the objects about to close the doors, but abruptly cuts to a different scene before they shut.
    • The Platinum Edition DVD and the Diamond Edition 2D Blu-ray and DVD all have different color schemes than the Walt Disney Classics VHS and laserdisc before them, making fans fear that Disney tampered with the picture.
    • The restoration for the Platinum Edition removed a credit before the prologue for Silver Screen Partners IV, and some stuttering from the scene where Beast asks Belle, "You wan-you wanna stay in the tower?" The restoration for the Diamond Edition put both of these back in.
    • Thankfully averted with the 3D version, which fixes the glitch and the soundtrack, and also has coloring closest to what was seen in the original theatrical and Classics releases. However, it does update the opening and ending credits with references to the 3D conversion.
  • Dirty Coward: No one resorts to dirty fighting like Gaston! We have Gaston mocking Beast while he was too depressed to defend himself, then pleading for his life when he finds himself at Beast's mercy. Beast finally lets him go... only for Gaston to stab him In the Back (because no one takes cheap shots like Gaston!).
  • Disney Death: The Beast after Gaston stabs him in the back. It's justified because he was under a magical spell and Belle reversed it.
  • Disney Villain Death: No one falls from the roof of a castle after stabbing Beast in the back like Gaston!
  • Disproportionate Retribution:
    • Discussed by the filmmakers in the commentary as to whether or not the Beast's punishment fit his crime. They never come to a conclusion. (At the very least, one can make the case that his servants didn't deserve to be punished for his dickishness. Cogsworth brings this up in the stage musical, complaining that they're not the ones who refused to help the old beggar woman, but Lumiere soberly points out that they were at least partly responsible for the Prince's behaviour and what he grew up to be).
    • It should also be remembered that, according to the timeline, ten years have passed between him being cursed and Belle coming to the castle, meaning that the Enchantress cursed him when he was only eleven (something the midquel confirms during a flashback sequence to the night of the enchantment the Beast has).
    • Meanwhile, no one in-universe does this better than Gaston! To elaborate: basically, Gaston gets rejected by a cute girl (Belle). So his response is to sulk in a bar, then start a riot, try to get her father committed to an asylum, and then rile the villagers into joining him to murder the Beast.
    • A small one, played for laughs - Belle hits the Beast with a snowball. So he scoops up enough snow that the snowball he ends up with looks like it could be used to take down a small aircraft! Fortunately, he never actually throws it, ending up dropping it on his own head when she nails him with another, and given his expression while making the snowball, he only meant to playfully threaten her with it, not actually throw it with everything he had.
  • Distant Prologue: According to Lumiere, the events discussed in the film’s stained glass prologue take place a decade before the official start of the movie.
  • Distant Reaction Shot: When the Beast is told Belle isn't coming down to dinner:
    Cogsworth: "...She's not coming."
    (cut to outside the room)
    Beast: "WHAT!?"
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When the castle is invaded by the mob, one of the townsfolk grabs Babette and starts ripping out her feathers as she shrieks and struggles. Lumiere saves her in an angry boyfriend fashion.
  • Dope Slap: Cogsworth gives a few to Lumiere after the latter kisses the former.
  • Downer Beginning: The start of the film shows how the Prince got transformed into a monster, and how he begged for forgiveness but received none. Being so ashamed of his new form, he concealed himself inside his castle and lost all hope in the Curse Escape Clause. All of this happens with that beautiful yet melancholy music in the background.
    Narrator: For who could ever learn to love a beast?
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Gaston tries to do this after being thrown out of Belle's house. He eventually refuses more alcohol, telling LeFou "Nothing helps."
  • Dumbass Has a Point: While saying Belle is "crazy" for turning down Gaston, the Bimbettes are the only characters in the whole village that note she's definitely not interested in him. Everyone else goes along with his schemes to force Belle to marry him.
  • Dumb Blonde: Three of them! They're all foils to Belle from the village. In the script and end credits, they're all named Bimbettes. In the Broadway show, they're called "Silly Girls."

  • Ear Ache: In the scene where the Beast takes a bath, the coatrack uses his ear to bring his head closer.
  • Easter Egg:
    • In the first song, where Belle sings in the town, she sits by a fountain. As she reads the book (described earlier, as an adventure with a prince in disguise, it sounds like Beauty and the Beast), she flips to a page, with a picture. Look closely, and you will see that she is in the bottom right, the beast in the middle left, and the prince's castle in the middle.
    • The first stained glass window seen in the prologue has the Latin phrase 'vincit qui se vincit', which means (in a subtle prefiguring of the arc of the whole story) 'He who conquers himself, conquers'.
    • Caricatures of the directors, Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, can be seen in the scene where Belle is given the book as a gift. As she is leaving the store three men are seen pretending to not look through the window and then they sing, "Look there she goes. The girl who's so peculiar. I wonder if she's feeling well." They are the two men on the outside of the large blonde man.
    • Among the trophy heads on Gaston's tavern is what appears to be a frog's head, visible in the shot as Gaston spits. A bald eagle can be seen while he jumps onto his chair during his song.
    • The original "cute" character of the movie was a music box, which was supposed to be a musical version of Dopey from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But when the character Chip's role was expanded, the music box idea was scrapped. However the music box can be seen for a brief moment on a table next to Lumière just before the fight between the enchanted objects and the villagers in the Beast's castle.
    • Almost all of the gargoyles and statues seen in the West Wing are previous designs for the Beast.
  • Egomaniac Hunter: Gaston's Establishing Character Moment in "Belle": shooting a bird and then declaring that Belle will be his wife because "I deserve the best!"
  • The Eleven O'Clock Number: "The Mob Song" occurs after Gaston reveals his true colors, Belle reveals the Beast's existence, and is the final song in the movie.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: Belle asks Beast to step into the light, and she (and the audience) sees his face properly.
  • Emotional Bruiser: Beast becomes this thanks to Belle's influence; strong enough to rip a human apart but kind enough not to.
  • Endearingly Dorky: The Beast at times during his more awkward moments. Belle spells out how adorable he is in her song "Something There" as he's trying to feed birds.
    Belle: There's something sweet, and almost kind ... but now he's dear, and so unsure.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • In the span of thirty seconds from the beginning of his introduction, Gaston shows off being an egotistical macho hunter with eyes only for Belle and is determined to marry her, believing she'll fall for him without hesitation, as well as possessing a massive sense of entitlement ("Don't I deserve the best?").
    • The Beast has his when Belle bargains with him for her father's life. He is abrasive and cruel, but unlike Gaston, he can be moved to compassion and feels guilt for his misdeeds - even right after an explosion of temper - and tries to make up for them.
  • Eureka Moment: After Maurice is thrown out of the tavern, one of the patrons says, "Crazy old Maurice," and Gaston overhears it, which inspires him to comes up with the plan to have Maurice thrown into the asylum in order to coerce Belle to marry him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Subverted: When the Asylum Warden learns from Gaston that he wants to incarcerate an innocent and harmless crackpot in order to blackmail his daughter into marrying him, he initially seems to react with disgust towards Gaston's Evil Plan with "Oh... that is so despicable", only to immediately declare "Hehehehe...! I LOVE IT!"
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The Beast/Prince's name is never revealed in-story. In the DVD commentary, during the climax, it was mentioned how when they got to where Belle called out to the Beast from the balcony, they realized they never named him. They said they all started throwing names out, but ultimately left him unnamed. Thus Belle called out "Beast!" from the balcony.
  • Everybody Cries: The Bimbettes are in love with Gaston and are therefore left crying when Gaston announces his intention to marry Belle.
  • Every Proper Lady Should Curtsy: Belle curtsies to Beast before they begin their dance. This is also the first time she's given him a move indicating such respect.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Gaston cannot understand why Belle refuses his advances, especially after threatening to have her father committed if she wouldn't marry him, and choose to fall in love with the Beast instead.
  • Evil Counterpart: Gaston to the Beast. The Beast may look like a monster, but he's revealed to be daring, heroic and protective. Gaston on the other hand, is handsome but extremely ruthless and brutish.
  • Evil Plan: Gaston comes up with one to wed Belle after she turns down his initial marriage proposal.
  • Evil Sounds Deep:
    • Monsieur D'Arque and Gaston himself have deeper voices than the more neutral townspeople and the good-aligned castle servants.
    • Invoked. When the Prince was cursed, his voice become noticeably deeper to exasperate the “scary monster” transformation.
  • Exact Words:
  • Exactly Exty Years Ago: According to Lumiere, the curse has lasted for ten years. Since the curse is in its final stages, this also means the Enchantress gave the Beast roughly ten years to break it.
  • Expressive Ears: The Beast has these, although they’re so small compared to the rest of his body that it’s hard to tell.
  • Eyes Never Lie: This is how Belle realizes the transformed prince really is Beast; his eyes were the only part of him not affected by the curse, so they remain the same when he turns back into a human.
  • Face Palm:
    • The Beast does this after causing Belle to flee terrified from the West Wing, and looks as if he's going to break into tears.
    • Belle does a double-handed version of this the moment she becomes Beast's prisoner, due to sorrow.
    • The Beast also does it in the prologue, wrapping both arms around his head in shame and despair.
  • Falling-in-Love Montage: The aptly titled "Something There". Poor Beast is trying so hard for her.
  • False Reassurance:
    • "I'm sorry, Gaston, but I just don't deserve you!"
    • "Don't worry, Maurice, we'll help you out!" They then chuck him out of the bar.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death:
    • During the castle invasion scene the wardrobe jumps off a second story balcony and lands on a guy with enough force to shatter the floor, all onscreen. This is a comedy fight so you normally wouldn't think about it, that is until we cut back to see the wardrobe fighting someone else still standing atop the mangled corpse of the guy she killed...
    • There's also the Beast's death after being stabbed in the back by Gaston (who falls off the roof into a canyon seconds later), the placement of the wound and the way he struggles to breathe makes it clear he has a punctured lung and slowly bleeds to death in Belle's arms (an agonizing way to die). It's okay, though, he got better.
    • It was also originally intended that Gaston would have suffered this trope: Specifically he would have survived his fall, albeit with a broken leg, and ended up encountering the wolves from earlier. Apparently they felt it was too gruesome even for someone like him.
  • Family-Unfriendly Violence: The Beast is on the receiving end of this several times (being one of the few Disney characters to actually bleed). He's noticeably cut up and bloody after the fight with the wolves, takes Gaston's arrow to the shoulder, and has a large bleeding wound on his side after Gaston stabs him.
  • Fangs Are Evil: The Beast’s fangs are more clearly and individually drawn whenever he’s supposed to look threatening.
  • Fanservice Extra: Besides the Bimbettes trio and Babette, in the song "Belle", while Belle is riding on the back of a carriage cart, one of the merchants selling bread to one of his female customers and is very clearly eyeing her very noticeably exposed cleavage.
  • Feet-First Introduction: The Beast remains in silhouette until the dungeon scene, when Belle asks him to come into the light. This trope then occurs (with a brief cutaway to Belle's face up close and horrified).
  • Feminist Fantasy: Belle is an intelligent, free-spirited heroine that loves to read and dreams of living a life of adventure. She stands her ground against Jerk Jock Gaston and the titular Beast, calling them on their behavior and refusing to change herself to suit others. The Beast ultimately earns her love by treating her with gentleness, respect and selfless caring, not to mention by embracing her passion for books, while Gaston, who does just the opposite of all those things pays with his life in the end.
  • Feigning Intelligence: A subtle one during Cogsworth's tour of the castle; the architectural terms he uses are nonsensical and frequently contradictory, indicating he has no clue what he's talking about.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: Gaston is an unusually manly example. He has an rather effeminate pose when he sings about his skills in decorating. Said decorations are all animals he's hunted and killed.
  • Finger-Forced Smile: During the song "Gaston", LeFou tries to make Gaston smile with his fingers and gets Punched Across the Room.
  • Flipping the Table: Gaston does this when he loses a game of chess.
  • "Flowers for Algernon" Syndrome: Years of the curse has slowly made the Beast’s mind more bestial. By the start of the film, he’s growling, barely wearing any clothes, and walking on all fours. As Belle and him fall in love, he starts acting more like a human again. Later, when the Beast believes he’s never going to see Belle again and be a beast for the rest of his life, his heartbreak and despair deteriorate him into making animalistic roars, growls, and whimpers again. Thankfully, his sanity vastly improves when Belle returns and fully recovers when he’s turned human again.
  • Fluffy Dry Cat: When the Beast is done with his bath, he shakes his fur dry, and it fluffs up.
  • Foil: Beast to Gaston, as the pair are polar opposites.
    • Gaston is handsome, vain, beloved by the town, yet is in reality is a brutal psychopath who cares about no one except himself. The Beast, in contrast, may appear to be a thoughtless monster, feared by practically everyone, but is in reality a kind hearted individual capable of acts of selflessness and bravery.
    • It is evident in how the pair treat Belle. Gaston shows up at her house to propose and marry her on the same day, expecting that she will just accept his offer without a second thought. Gaston tries to win her over by telling her how she'd serve him, and doesn't give a second thought to what she wants or what she would be interested in. Beast, in contrast, wants to do something nice for her, so he gives her access to the castle's vast library which plays right into her interests.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • During the Crowd Song "Belle", LeFou says, "No beast alive stands a chance against you, and no girl for that matter." We all know how well it went when he went for the prize beast and the prize girl.
    • Belle's favorite part of her book is the part where the heroine "meets Prince Charming, but she won't discover that it's him 'til chapter three". Belle herself meets a prince, but is unaware of this until act three of the story. Also, the illustration shows the story she will soon be living.
    • "I'll have Belle for my wife, make no mistake of that!''
    • In Maurice's first scene, he tells Belle that the woodchopping machine "will be the start of a new life for us" when he wins first prize at the fair for it, which will kickstart his career as an inventor. Since it's getting lost on the way to that fair that leads him to the Beast's doorstep, it is the start of a new life for them, if not the one they planned. Later it is later used by Chip to break them free, which lets Belle get back to the castle and sets off the chain of events which breaks the curse and begins their new life in the restored castle.
    • "No one takes cheap shots like Gaston!" Gaston stabs the Beast in the back during the climax, seconds after the Beast spared his life.
    • "It's my favorite! Far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!" That's a pretty good approximation of the entire plot.
    • After first being rejected by Belle near the beginning of the film, Gaston falls out her door into a puddle of mud. Instead of looking immaculate and poised as normal, his clothes and hair are a mess, and he immediately rages at Le Fou over his rejection, foreshadowing that he is a much darker and more serious character than his initial oafish Jerk Jock depiction indicated, and also foreshadowing how he winds up looking more like a beast during the climactic fight than the titular one.
    • Belle establishes the townsfolk being prejudice against anyone or anything they deem different with the majority of their lyrics being about how Belle doesn’t fit in with society. Gaston, meanwhile, is a song in praise to a man who is clearly a machismo brute, something they don’t realize. This all leads to The Mob Song with them joining Gaston without a second of doubt to kill the Beast, ignoring Belle’s pleas that he’s not a monster, with them only paying attention to his appearance.
  • Forgiveness: Maurice at first understandably thinks the Beast is nothing more than a monster; the Beast imprisoned him and took his daughter in Maurice's stead. He fears the worst when he's not even allowed to say goodbye. Then Belle rescues him from the snowstorm, and explains how the Beast became her friend. They then get locked up thanks to Gaston attempting a Scarpia Ultimatum, and Belle desperately tries to get herself and her father out of the cellar to save the Beast from Gaston. Maurice knows his daughter is no fool and goes with her on the rescue. At the end, he's crying Tears of Joy at the wedding, showing he accepts the Prince as his son-in-law.
  • Foreboding Fleeing Flock: Played for laughs when the birds eating from Beast's hands fly away from him right before Belle hits him with a snowball.
  • For the Evulz: Asylum owner Monsieur D'Arque's response when Gaston asks him to imprison Belle's father Maurice just to coerce Belle into marrying Gaston.
    Monsieur D'Arque: Oh, that is despicable...[Evil Laugh]...I love it!
  • Fourth Date Marriage: Parodied with Gaston, who arranges a wedding for him and Belle outside her house without them ever even dating...or him proposing; something he cheerfully jokes about to the wedding party.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • Pausing during the part of Gaston's death scene where his face is closest to the camera will allow you to see the skulls the animators painted into his pupils for that scene, to remove any doubt he wasn't going to survive his fall.
    • The sign Belle passes by has faded references to the California cities of Valencia (home to CalArts where many Disney animators studied) and Anaheim (home to Disneyland) that are barely readable.
    • A couple frames during the "Gaston" musical number reveal that the various animals whose heads Gaston mounts on his wall don't just include typical hunter's targets like deer or moose, but also include raccoons, owls, rabbits, turkeys, and cats.
  • Freeze Sneeze: Maurice first enters the Beast's castle while soaked by a drenching downpour of rain. Maurice sneezing into Cogsworth's face prompts Lumiere to say "Oh, you are soaked to the bone, Monsieur. Come, warm yourself by the fire."
  • Friend to All Children: Belle pats a little girl's head at one point as she wanders through the village reading her book and later becomes a close friend to Chip.
  • Funny Background Event:
    • The whole song "Belle" is full of these.
      • Look closely while Belle is at the fountain with the sheep. A woman is washing her laundry, looks around, and leaves in apparent annoyance.
      • As Belle strolls over a wooden two-wheeled wagon, a man bends down to get a bag flower from the wagon. As Belle walks off, the pully lifts up and hits the man in the chin, causing him to spin around in a silly cross-eyed daze and flop to the ground unconscious.
      • You can see a kid chasing a piglet, just to be chased away by it's mom, and a woman complaining why her fish comes with a squirrel. Among other things.
    • When Gaston is ranting about Belle turning him down, Le Fou has two beers in hand. He gives one to Gaston and goes to take a sip of the other, only for Gaston to take both. You can see Le Fou search for his beer while Gaston continues ranting.
    • Near the end of "Something There", there's Beast getting owned by Belle in a snowball fight.
    • In Cogsworth’s segment of “Human Again,” Lumiere is shown brushing Phillipe. When he hops away to help Cogsworth, the brush keeps moving. The best part is Phillipe reacting in surprise before moving out of shot.
    • During the Enchanted Objects' fight with the villagers, specifically in the scene where a villager is "eaten" by a chest that burps, there is a shadow cast on a pillar of a man being attacked by a mace in his own hands, putting a twist on the classic "Stop Hitting yourself".

  • Gainaxing: The Bimbettes have very supple breasts.
  • Gasp!: Belle does a quick one and turns away when she first sees Beast.
  • Gentle Giant: In the film's second half, the massive and tall Beast is also a sweetheart thanks to Love Redeems.
  • Get It Over With: This is the Beast's reaction to Gaston attempting to kill him, when he thinks Belle has left him forever.
  • Getting the Boot: Poor Maurice gets the boot thanks to Gaston being unwilling to believe him. "We'll help you out."
  • Get Out!: The Beast to Belle after she ventures into the West Wing. He gives a much colder delivery to Gaston after utterly destroying him and revealing him as the coward he truly is in the finale.
  • Gilded Cage: When Belle trades herself in for her father in the Beast's captivity, she initially thinks that she'll be kept in the dungeons, but the Beast takes her to much better arrangements in a guest room. She has the Beast's entire servant staff waiting on her and most of the castle to herself — none of which keeps her from remaining well aware she's his prisoner.
  • Glowing Flora: The Beast's rose emits a powerful rose glow. Justified, as it's a magical rose, and its glowing shows the power and importance of the flower.
  • Gonk: Most of the villagers are rather cartoony looking, especially LeFou.
  • Ye Goode Olde Days: Belle's walking along the street with her nose in a book. A woman throws water out of the window, but she blocks herself with a street sign. If the story takes place in the time it was written, then that wouldn't be water. It'd be dung from the crockery pot...
  • Good Is Not Nice: The Enchantress, who cursed a child and his servants along with a spoiled and selfish prince. The child was a brat and the servants could be considered guilty to some degree, but still it's disproportionate.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: A villager at the bar is revealed to wear some, and Belle's father, Maurice, has a pair.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Discussed by Beast, Lumiere, and Cogsworth which leads to the Beast giving Belle the library.
  • Grand Staircase Entrance: Both Belle and Beast make one before their big dance. They meet in the middle.
  • Gray Rain of Depression: During the Beast's Disney Death, the rain adds to the tragic and sorrowing atmosphere.
  • Guns Do Not Work That Way: A blunderbuss is a single shot weapon, but Gaston is able to get off several shots without reloading.
  • HA HA HA—No: Zigzagged with Gaston when he and Lefou are laughing about Belle's "crazy" father. When Belle tells them not to talk that way about her father, Gaston rounds on LeFou and conks him on the head and repeats Belle's admonition to him. Then something blows up in the lab and they both start laughing again, and then Gaston Dope Slaps LeFou again... but then goes on laughing.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: The Beast has this for half of the movie; realizing it made Belle run away was the first step in him overcoming it.
  • Happily Ever After: The final scene shows a party for The Prince and his (presumed) fiancee. All the castle inhabitants are human again and Maurice is there too. Chip actually asks Mrs. Potts if Belle and the Prince "...are gonna live Happily Ever After", to which Mrs. Potts answers, "Of course, my dear."
  • Heel–Face Turn: The Beast; Royal Brat to Wise Prince.
  • Held Gaze:
    • Belle and the newly transformed Prince do this, and it is as Belle is gazing into the Prince's eyes that she recognises that he is indeed her Beast, which is then succeeded by the "kiss the whole castle was waiting for", according to the script.
    • The dance scene has them doing this as well.
  • Heroic BSoD: The Beast has a near suicidal one after he lets Belle return to her father since he believes she would never return of her own free will. Therefore he feels he will never break his curse nor will he ever see the woman he has come to love again.
  • Heroic Resolve: Beast gets this, once Belle's return shows him she loves him. This is bad for Gaston.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Belle trades her freedom for her father's despite not knowing if the hideous monster she had just bargined with would let her out of the tower, or even let her live.
    • When Beast lets Belle go, he believes she will never return of her own free will thus dooming him to be a beast forever. Yet he does it anyway because he loves her.
  • "The Hero Sucks" Song: "The Mob Song" which is sung by the village mob and Gaston about how scary and mean the Beast is.
  • Hidden Depths: Yes, the Beast is a jerk; however he is also brave, cunning, determined, and in his own harsh, angry way merciful. The castle staff even state that he really isn't that bad once you get to know him; he's just angry and very, very depressed.
  • Hit Flash: A double impact during the battle in the castle was censored when televised.
  • Hollywood Costuming:
    • Continuing with Disney's trend of putting the main character with contemporary fashions, Belle's dress in the famous ballroom scene resembles that of a late 1980s/early 1990s evening gown that resembles a Victorian style rather than an 18th century sack back what with that crinoline, hourglass waist, and off-the-shoulder neckline.
    • Belle's blue peasant outfit is not historically accurate either, the main problems with it being that she's not wearing any headwear or stockings. Going bare-headed and bare-legged were major taboos in the 18th century. This is referenced briefly in the film; when imagining being Gaston's wife, Belle holds a cloth around her head like a shawl.
  • Homage:
    • That seemingly inanimate objects could move of their own accord (and speak in voiceover) in the Beast's castle in Jean Cocteau's film version was detailing that became the direct inspiration for the Enchanted Objects. Both versions have a villain added in the form of a man who wants to marry Belle, though this may not have been a deliberate callback to the Cocteau film.
    • Tony Jay's casting as the head of the insane asylum is a nod to his role as the major villain in the TV series Beauty and the Beast.
    • Several elements of the movie, like Belle being bookish, her brown hair, and the horse, may have come from Robin McKinley's 1978 novel Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
    • The screenwriter, Linda Woolverton, says that she based Belle on Katharine Hepburn's version of Jo March.
    • The library in the Beast's castle bears a strong resemblance to the oval reading room of the Richelieu Building at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris.
    • In "The Mob Song", when Gaston says "Screw your courage to the sticking place", this is a reference to Shakespeare's Macbeth. He also says "If you're not with us, you're against us" which is from The Bible.
  • "Home Alone" Antics: The battle between the Enchanted Objects and the Angry Mob is an unusual example in that the defenders and the traps are one and the same. The film was originally released a year after the trope namer, as it happened, so one of the kid-skewing television ads actually focused on this sequence (with an announcer's voiceover that even dropped the phrase "home alone"). A sequence which barely takes up 3 minutes of the entire film, and that's counting cutaways to things like Chip freeing Belle and her riding back to the castle.
  • Horned Humanoid: The Beast has horns and a very basic human figure. It’s downplayed, however, as the outline is very basic. It also doesn’t help he walks on all fours for a bit of the first act.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: The Village qualifies, no doubt. Even though Gaston makes no secret of his Jerkass nature, such as loudly stating things that imply his plan to marry Belle involved locking up Maurice in the asylum under deliberately false pretenses so as to blackmail her into marrying him, they still love him.
  • Horns of Villainy: Invoked. The Enchantress added a pair of horns to the “scary monster transformation” she placed on the Prince.
  • Hourglass Plot: The Character Development of Belle's two potential Love Interests. Gaston, who starts off handsome and well respected, if smug, descends into bestial villainy, while the Beast's increasing humanity wins Belle's heart and his own restoration.
  • House of Broken Mirrors: The West Wing is a mess because of Beast's initial rage at what happened to him. There's also slashed portraits.
  • Howl of Sorrow: More of a roar, but there is bit of a howl in there when the Beast watches Belle leave.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: While the Beast's exact height is open to debate, the consensus is that he's around seven feet tall and definitely towers over Belle. Once he's human again it's closer to One Head Taller.
  • Hunk:
    • Gaston is the most eligible bachelor in the village for this reason. The bimbettes say he's 'dreamy'.
    • The Beast's true form is a blonde haired, blue-eyed, prince.
  • Hybrid Monster: The beast has the mane of a lion, the beard and head of a buffalo, the brows of a gorilla, the eyes of a human, the tusks of a wild boar, the body of a bear, and the hind legs and tail of a wolf.

    Tropes I to J 
  • I Am a Monster: The Beast believes himself to be one because of his appearance.
    Beast: I’m just fooling myself. [Belle will] never see me as anything more but a monster. It’s hopeless.
  • I Gave My Word: Belle promises to stay in the castle with the Beast forever if he let her father go, but when the Beast goes into a furious rage after she trepasses in the West Wing, she breaks the promise and flees the castle fearing for her life. However, after the Beast saves her from the wolves and falls unconscious both honor and compassion cause her to help him back to the castle instead of leaving him to his fate in the snow.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Gaston always made aggressive advances towards Belle and after she rejects him he tries to blackmail her into marrying him.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: The Beast's and the servants desire after being transformed is to become "human again". The servants even sing a song about it.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: Gaston could have any other woman in the village, but goes after the only one who isn't attracted to him. There are lots of beautiful women who would have married him on the spot like he wanted, but he set his sights on the most unattainable.
  • I'm Not Hungry: Belle refuses to eat dinner with the Beast (at first), with these exact words.
  • Impairment Shot: Maurice has fuzzy vision as he wakes up after Belle sent him back home.
  • Implausible Deniability: After all that Belle had seen, Cogsworth still tried to deny that the castle was enchanted. Note that Cogsworth himself is enchanted; a definite no win situation there.
    • Whenever Cogsworth wants to avoid something (like the fact that Belle’s not coming down for dinner or the West Wing), he pretends he doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
    Belle: (literally on the steps to the West Wing) What’s up there?
    Cogsworth: Where? There? Oh, nothing.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: Belle's yellow ball gown, in some shots, looks too low to stay on properly. Specifically when they're on the ballroom terrace after the title song.
  • Improbable Weapon User: The Enchanted Objects are this in the final battle. Mrs. Potts and the teacups scald people with boiling tea, Lumiere burns a villager in a blowtorch fashion, and we see other unnamed objects fighting in humorous ways, like boxing hat racks and dressers.
  • Improvised Weapon: Gaston tears off a spiky, conveniently club-shaped chunk of architecture to wield against the Beast during their fight.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Belle is certainly pretty, but she's described as an unparalleled beauty in the movie, which also depicts every other woman as busty and very attractive, particularly the Three Bimbettes. It may be due to her seeming unattainable, unlike most of the other women who absolutely swoon over Gaston. In addition, Belle is designed to be taller and more slender, thus giving her a different kind of beauty than the other women.
  • In Harm's Way: Belle craves adventure, because her hometown is safe and happy and boring.
  • Innocently Insensitive: After the Beast lets Belle go, ergo giving up his chances of becoming human again, Cogsworth comes in cheerfully proclaiming how great everything is going and how he always knew the curse could be broken.
  • Insecure Love Interest: At first, the Beast thinks Belle could never love him because of his appearance.
    Beast: Oh, it’s no use, she’s so beautiful and I’m...well look at me!
  • Insecure Protagonist, Arrogant Antagonist: The two main protagonists are insecure in different ways: Belle feels out of place in her village for liking books and for wanting true love rather than just an attractive partner. The Beast is a dark, brooding Byronic Hero who angsts over his Baleful Polymorph curse and must learn how to love. The antagonist, Gaston, is The Ace in Belle's village, being a narcissistic, overly-macho hunter and the most handsome and beloved man in the village.
  • Insult Backfire: "Gaston, you are positively primeval." "Thank you, Belle."
  • In the Back: Near the end, the Beast lets Gaston live after he wins their fight. He goes over to Belle, who has just returned. At that point Gaston takes the sneaky road and climbs up to the Beast so he can stab him from behind. When the Beast lashes out after getting knifed, Gaston subsequently loses his footing and plummets to his death.
  • Ironic Echo: (In front of Belle's house) Belle: "Please, I know he looks vicious, but he's really kind and gentle." (Later on castle roof) Gaston: "What's the matter Beast? Too 'kind and gentle' to fight back?"
  • Irony: There are two requirements that must be met to lift the curse, in the order given. First, Beast must learn to love. Second, he must earn that love in return. He does learn to love, thus meeting the first requirement. But in so doing, he realizes he cannot hold Belle prisoner especially while her father is sick and lost in the woods. So, because he loves her, he releases her, thereby forfeiting the chance to meet the second requirement of the cursenote .
  • It's All My Fault:
    • Belle says this when she and Maurice are trapped in the cellar while Gaston and the mob are on their way to the Beast's castle because she used the magic mirror to prove that the Beast existed. She says it again after the Beast is stabbed.
    • This is so the Beast's (silent) reaction when he learns Belle's father is sick and lost, because it is his fault for throwing him out. His face says it all.
  • It's Personal: The final showdown between the Beast and Gaston. As the latter said:
    Gaston: Take whatever booty you can find, but remember: the Beast is mine!
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: The reason the Beast allows Belle to leave when they learn her father is sick and lost in the woods, even though the time in which his curse can be broken is fast dwindling, and she hasn't yet admitted she loves him. The Objects, also threatened by the curse, find out ("He did WHAT?") and must confront the irony that in learning to love someone for the first time, he's sealed his and their fate by letting her go.
  • "I Want" Song:
    • "Belle", especially the reprise, showcases Belle's desire for adventure and someone who would understand her. It also outlines Gaston's plans for Belle.
    • "Human Again" from The Musical, originally planned for (and eventually ported back into) the movie. Obviously it's about being human again.
  • I Will Show You X: When Maurice intrudes into Beast's castle:
    Maurice: I just needed a place to stay...
    Beast: I'll give you a place to stay!
  • I Wish It Were Real: Belle's favorite story, which is full of magic and excitement and which includes a prince in disguise whose real identity the heroine doesn't know at first, sounds more than a little like the movie's plot.
  • Jabba Table Manners: At breakfast together, Belle is visibly disturbed to see Beast snarfing at his porridge like an animal. Chip, on the other hand, is amused at the sight, and is seen giggling over it until Mrs. Potts ahems and glares at him. He thus helpfully nudges the Beast his spoon... which leads to Beast dripping the porridge into his waiting jaws. Belle offers a compromise by lifting her bowl up, and they both drink.
  • Jerkass:
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While the Beast shouldn't have flown into rage when Belle trespassed into the West Wing, he had no idea what would happen if she had touched the enchanted rose. In addition, she'd deliberately disobeyed the one and only rule he imposed on her (that was arguably as much for her own protection as it was to protect the rose and guard what little dignity he had).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Cogsworth is pompous, grumpy and a bit rude, but he's really just as good-natured as Lumiere and he can also be very helpful. The song "Human Again" gives the impression that a lot of his attitude comes from being incredibly stressed out; he noted, when introducing himself to Belle, that he's the head of the household. This little clock is the one who keeps the place running while their master is storming around in his beast form.
  • Just in Time: Belle declares her love for Beast, thus enabling the spell to be broken, right before the last petal falls.

    Tropes K to L 
  • Karma Houdini:
    • The servants didn’t do anything to the Enchantress yet they all got turned into an Animate Inanimate Object, although the stage play and the the live action movie state that they were cursed because they were raised the Prince and are responsible for how he turned out. Regardless, the multiple children and the animals still had no part in raising the Prince, yet they are cursed as well. She is never called out on it nor does anyone bear her any ill will. It’s also important to note that the Beast was only eleven years old when he was cursed.
    • Monsieur D'Arque, the asylum owner, loves Gaston's Evil Plan but drops out of the story after The Plan backfires and is never shown to be brought to justice for his part in it.
    • The villagers as a whole. They gleefully take part in a violent mob against the Beast and the residents of his castle, and aside from some comical beatings from the enchanted objects, seem to escape any sort of comeuppance.
  • Karmic Death: Gaston stabs the Beast in the back, but he immediately loses his grip and falls off the balcony and into the same deep frightening moat that the Beast spared him from moments before.
  • Karmic Transformation: The Prince was repulsed by the Enchantress because she looked ugly. So, she turns him into a hideous beast.
  • Kill It with Fire: LeFou attempts to do this to Lumiere with a torch before he's jabbed in the butt by scissors held by Cogsworth. Lumiere then blows fire on the butt of one of the other goons who's attacking his feather duster girlfriend.
  • Kindly Housekeeper: Mrs. Potts is one of the castle's maids and full of maternal love for everyone. She's the one who roused the kitchen when Belle came down for a snack.
  • Kubrick Stare: The Beast pulls a low brow look of intimidation a few times, largely when he is most beast-like.
  • A Lady on Each Arm: Lumiere mentions this in the cut song "Human Again." The two mademoiselles are Mrs. Potts and Babette.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice: Gaston has a strong and square jaw... but he's a villain.
  • Large Ham: One need look no further than Gaston's performance in the pub during the song "Gaston" to be convinced of his desire to ham it up.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Occurs as Cogwsorth actually believes his is successfully keeping their enchantment hidden from Belle.
    Mrs. Potts: But if the master doesn't learn to control that temper, he'll never break the sp-
    Cogwsorth: (as Belle enters) Splendid to see you out and about, Mademoiselle!
  • Leitmotif: The "Prologue" theme, the Beast's theme (which has a Dark Reprise during his death scene), "Belle", Maurice's theme, "Gaston", and "Prince Charming" (the love theme). Some of these became the musical foundation for new numbers in the Screen-to-Stage Adaptation.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Cogsworth is the first to declare they need to fight on seeing the invading villagers, and arms himself to the teeth. When the cute, whimsical, talking household items get fed up of cowering from the marauding peasants and duke it out instead it leads to several silly, yet awesome, moments. The Beast also does this upon Belle's return to the castle and dominates the latter half of the fight with Gaston.
  • Letting Her Hair Down:
    • During the wolf chase, Belle's ponytail came loose, revealing her beautiful long brown hair, but we get a more prominent look at it in the next scene when she treats Beast's wounds. This is the first moment of tenderness between them.
    • During the famous ballroom scene, Belle's hair is mostly down with only a small portion tied back.
    • She also has this look towards the climax for the raw emotion.
  • Light Is Not Good: The Enchantress, if you're feeling less charitable than the Good Is Not Nice camp, fits this instead. She has all the characteristics of a good fairy, except ostensible Knight Templar leanings.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Despite his size, Beast is agile, fast and able to beat wolves.
  • Likean Old Married Couple: Cogsworth and Lumiere’s relationship is like this.
    Cogsworth: (to Lumiere) Couldn’t keep quiet, could we? Just had to invite him to stay, didn’t we? ''Serve him tea, sit in the master’s chair, pet the pooch.''
    Lumiere: I was trying to be hospitable.
    (An entire scene later)
    Cogsworth: Irresponsible, devil-may-care, waxy eared, slack jawed...
    Lumiere: (starts doing the “blah-blah-blah” hand gesture with his candlesticks.)
  • Lima Syndrome: Beast falling for his captive, Belle. It is a deconstruction; by the time this happens, she was less a captive and more like an honored guest that wasn't allowed to leave. It's strongly alluded to in the stage adaptation when Beast lets Belle go and says "You're not my prisoner anymore. You haven't been for a long time."
  • Literal Transformative Experience: The Beast was a selfish, unsympathetic prince, so an Enchantress turned him into a hideous monster as a punishment. When he transforms himself into someone who can love and be loved, he turns back into a human to reflect this.
  • Loss of Identity:
    • The creators say that the Beast's humanity was slowly fading away and was becoming more feral as the years went by. When Belle trespasses into the West Wing, the floor is rarely seen because it's littered with carcasses as he'd long given in to the urge to hunt for his food. His bed, along with being broken, is arranged in a way that suggests an animal's lair/nest that he is sleeping on. They also said that if Belle had never arrived he would have eventually grown so removed from humanity that he would stop wearing clothes, walk only on all fours and forget how to speak.
    • This seems to be similar for the staff in that once the curse is complete they would become completely inanimate objects and their sapiance would just fade away.
  • Loud Gulp: The Beast is so nervous at the prospect of dancing with Belle, he audibly swallows a lump in his throat big enough to be seen through his shaggy fur.
  • Love at First Punch: Belle is the first person after the enchantress who confronted Beast on his treatment of others.
  • Love Epiphany: The song "Something There" is all about this, but most prominent is when Belle goes behind a tree and is visibly shocked as she realizes her feelings. The Beast has a different one later on (after the ballroom scene) when he realizes what love truly means.
  • Love Hurts: The Beast's heartbreak when Belle leaves after the uplifting ballroom scene is palpable. As she gallops away, he breaks into a roaring primal scream of despair.
  • Love Redeems: Thanks to Belle, Beast becomes a kinder person.
  • Love Theme: As mentioned above, the "Prince Charming" motif, as well as the title song.
  • Love Triangle: Belle, Beast and Gaston, although the latter is just him forcing this trope.
  • Lured into a Trap: The cushion dog steals LeFou's shoe during the final battle, leading him and several mobsters into the kitchen. At first, it seems to be cornered. Then it stands up straight, the knives come out, and the cook Stove gives an Evil Laugh. Cue the mobsters being chased out of the castle.

    Tropes M to N 
  • Made of Iron: LeFou can get punched 10 feet and just get up and keep singing.
  • Magic Mirror: Beast has one that serves as his only connection to the outside world; it functions like a typical Crystal Ball would. The user says "Show me X" and X appears. It later becomes important when Beast gives it to Belle just before she leaves. When the villagers later scoff at her story, she simply tells it "Show me the Beast!" and it does, which sets up the climax of the movie as Gaston plays upon the villagers' fears of the apparent hideous monster that they have just seen in the mirror.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Gaston is well aware of his popularity in the village, and in the end, he uses it to turn most of the male population of his town into an angry mob.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The ornaments have this reaction when they see the Beast bleeding out in Belle's arms. They're in Stunned Silence as Belle begs him to hold on, promising that they are together, and saying she loves him.
  • Mean Boss: Gaston is completely abusive to LeFou, who seems to be the closest thing to his "best friend", and even forces LeFou to wait outside Belle's home in the snow for what seemed to be weeks, if not months. Oddly, LeFou never complains.
  • Meaningful Echo: "Please let (insert person here) go! I'll do anything!" First with Belle when she takes her father's place, second when the Beast is holding Gaston over the edge of the roof, which was probably why he was spared. Interestingly, both times had people at the Beast's mercy, and both times resulted in an unusual act of kindness from him (taking up Belle's offer and letting Gaston go).
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Belle is French for "beautiful", since the original tale is French and its title in French is "La Belle et la Bête" ("The Beautiful and the Beast"). This even gets a Lampshade Hanging by one of the female villagers, who sings, "Now it's no wonder that her name means 'beauty' / Her looks have got no parallel..."
    • In the original de Beaumont fairytale (or at least the earliest version we have), she has a different name, but we never learn it. Everyone just calls her La Belle. Her name being Belle is an improvement. (The Beast doesn't have a name there either.)
    • "LeFou" is a phonetic pun on "the fool" (the actual translation from French to English is closer to The Madman, the Insane, The Mad, or Insanity). Likewise, Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, and Chip all have names relating to the objects they became (with Chip being a reference to his state of being).
    • Monsieur D'Arque, the asylum proprietor, certainly is dark and sinister.
    • Philippe the horse's name is the French version of the name Philip, which means "friend of horses".
  • Medley Overture: The stage show opens its second act with "Entr'acte & Wolf Chase," which features a medley of "If I Can't Love Her," the "Transformation" theme, "No Matter What," "Be Our Guest," "Home," "If I Can't Love Her" in a different key and "Belle" briefly once the wolf chase portion starts.
  • Might Makes Right:
    • Gaston certainly believes this. Why else would he storm Beast's castle but to prove that he's the best match for Belle?
    • The villagers also get their own moment in the mob song:
    Mob song: We're fifty strong, and fifty Frenchmen can't be wrong!
  • Mighty Roar: Beast lets out a few good ones such as when he fights the wolves, when Belle leaves and when he starts fighting back against Gaston. When he yells (which he does a lot) animal roars are mixed into the dialog for extra oomph.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Gaston fits this. He is thought of very highly by the village for his various accomplishment, but when Beast threatened him his life in the climax he started begging for mercy.
  • Milking the Giant Cow: Gaston has some magnificent arm gestures during the climax to emphasize his vocal inflections.
  • Missing Mom: There is no mention of what happened to Maurice's wife, aka Belle's mom. Not so in the stage musical, which reveals her to be dead and still honoured in the family.
  • Mistakes Are Not the End of the World: Not in the movie proper, but a bonus song has the grammatically-incorrect lyric "A little give, a little take, a little it's OK to make a small mistake".
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: The Beast has the mane of a lion, the head structure of a bison, the brow of a gorilla, the tusks of a wild boar, the torso of a bear, the hind legs and tail of a wolf, and the eyes of a human.
  • Monster Modesty: This trope is tied into The Beast's character development. He starts off only in a pair of pants and a cape and as he becomes more humanized he starts wearing more clothes until we finally see him in full formal wear. It's justified in that he's still desperately trying to maintain his humanity and is also ashamed of his appearance (hence the cape, which hides his body). The creators say that eventually his humanity would have degenerated to the point where he'd wear no clothes at all.
  • Mood Whiplash:
    • The Beast drags Maurice off. Gaston's ridiculous (first) marriage proposal follows.
    • In a meta example, Paige O'Hara sobbed real tears while recording Belle's mourning of the Beast. Her performance was so intense that the director asked her if she was OK, upon which O'Hara immediately dropped out of character and said "Acting!"
    • The famous dinner request scene, and the scene where the servants deal with the aftermath, is mostly Played for Laughs...then it cuts to Beast storming into the West Wing, ranting furiously before he looks in on Belle with the magic mirror...just in time to catch her declaring she doesn't want anything to do with him. The Beast, who already insisted the curse would never be broken, loses even more hope he’ll ever be seen as anything other than a monster. The Rose then loses another petal.
    • Be Our Guest, a mostly happy song, has a segment in the middle where it’s tune changes somber and Lumiere sings about how the curse has affected the servants.
    • The Beast's utterly heartbreaking releasing of Belle after the amazingly romantic and uplifting ballroom scene.
    • The alternating scenes of the funny and happy fight of the servants with the villagers, along with Gaston's hunting pursuit.
    • The wardrobe crushing a villager, and then shoving another into herself, causing him to emerge dressed in drag and freaking out. The crushed villager is still lying there and not moving...
    • More of an In-Universe example, but after the heartbreaking interaction of the Beast letting Belle go, Cogsworth comes in cheerfully proclaiming how great everything is going and how he always knew the curse could be broken.
  • Mook Horror Show: Really, the scene with the invasion of the Beast's castle. When they first arrive, it's quiet...deathly so. Then there is a shout of 'Now' from a talking candelabra and suddenly EVERYTHING in the main hall comes to life and starts attacking everyone; sentient clocks attacking with scissors, demonic stoves with sentient cutlery sets, a talking teapot with the ability to make scathing hot liquid at will, a pile driving sentient dresser, AND lord knows what else.
  • Morphic Resonance: As household objects, the servants look quite similar to their human forms; for example, Cogsworth's clock hands are his mustache.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Gaston attempts this in the film's climax by storming Beast's castle. He succeeds, except he was the hypotenuse.
  • Music for Courage: Done to a villainous end with "Gaston" where he riles up the villagers into a mob with a song.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • After throwing her father out without letting them say goodbye, Beast has a small moment of this when showing Belle to her room, leading to him trying to say something nice to her (He blows it anyway).
    • After the Beast scares Belle out of the west wing and the castle, he silently FacePalms.
    • The Beast has a similar reaction in the musical, when he grabs Belle's arm after catching her in the West Wing and accidentally rips her sleeve. This is what prompts her to leave the castle, while he desperately tries to apologize.
  • Neck Lift: The Beast to Gaston, during the final fight, demonstrating his greater strength and stature, as well as how easy it would be to toss him over the edge. Also done rather realistically, as the Beast doesn't just do this, but has to hold on to a gargoyle for balance. Currently the trope's page image.
  • Never Learned to Read: The Beast in the stage play. Belle teaches him to read and he finds that books are as much of an escape for him as they are for her.
  • Never My Fault: Early in the film, Maurice wants to go down a dark, misty, scary path while Phillippe wants to go down the sunnier path. When Maurice makes him go down the misty path and gets lost, he asks Phillippe where he thinks he's going.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Belle shows the Beast in the mirror to prove her father's sanity. This succeeds, but to her horror it sets off a mob to go after the Beast.
  • No Badass to His Valet: Belle and the Beast's relationship develops into this at first. Out of a whole castle full of servants who alternately cringe in terror of his rages or try to bring him up like he's a child, Belle is the only one who talks to him like an equal.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: For the voice of Lumiere, Jerry Orbach did an absolute dead ringer impersonation of Maurice Chevalier.
  • No Indoor Voice: The Beast persistently shouts, especially his howling "GET OOOUUUUUUUTTTT!" which sounds even more "bestial" since they mixed animal growls, snarls and roars in with his dialogue to make him sound more wild and show just how inhuman he's become.
  • No Name Given: The Beast. His servants refer to him only as "The Master". Belle doesn't even know his name. At the climax, she simply calls him 'Beast'. When "Belle" at meet & greets in Disney Parks is asked about the Beast's real name, she responds by saying that he had been a Beast for so long, he cannot remember.
    Gary Trousdale: (in the commentary) "We got to the end of the movie and realized "He doesn't have a name!""
    • His name was finally revealed to be "Adam" in a CD-ROM game, though it's unclear how much this relates to the rest of the Disney Canon.
  • No Time to Explain: When Belle comes across Maurice imprisoned in the castle, he says this while he’s begging her to leave.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: LeFou, Maurice and the appliances-turned-human (excluding Babette) are far toonier-looking than the rest of the cast. A guy in the opening number also has an elongated head that makes him look like a Beavis And Butthead character.
  • Not So Above It All: Cogsworth, would you believe? He may act prim and proper... but when the castle is attacked, he dresses like Napoleon with a sword and a pistol and takes Le Fou out with aplomb, absolutely magnificent aplomb.
  • Not Even Bothering with the Accent: Most of the cast; as MAD Magazine pointed out in their parody, this is especially noticeable because of Lumiere's extremely pronounced accent. Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts have British accents, because all butlers must be British. They shouldn't even be speaking English anyway, so... artistic license.
  • Not Good with Rejection: Gaston's response is to drink and sulk. When he finds out he has a rival, he goes out to kill the guy.
  • Not Helping Your Case: People viewing the Beast as a monster because of his appearance is what upsets him the most. However, before his Character Development, the Beast would do horrible things when he was angry, which of course just reinforced their belief he was a monster, ergo creating a never ending cycle. The most notable example is the Beast getting upset at Maurice because he believes he came to gawk at a beast...and then proceeded to lock him in a dungeon.

  • Objectshifting: While the Enchantress's curse transformed the prince into a monstrous beast, it transformed his servants into Animate Inanimate Objects, including clocks, candelabras, tea sets, mops, wardrobes, musical instruments, and many others.
  • Obviously Evil:
    • Gaston is an Egomaniac Hunter dressed in red with long black hair and as he reaches his peak his hair becomes wild and messy.
    • Corrupt asylum director Monsieur D'Arque has skin that is a sickly green color and a gaunt face.
  • Obviously Not Fine: Chip claims not to be sleepy to try to get a later bedtime, despite having trouble keeping his eyes open.
  • Off-Model:
    • The Bimbettes have 3 different hair styles and 3 different color dresses, but in various scenes the colors of their dresses keep changing. In addition, their hairstyles are all the same at the end of the "Gaston" reprise.
    • A few of Belle's scenes were done by a different animation team, giving her face a somewhat different, more rounded look. It's probably most noticeable when she enters the bookshop in the opening song.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • When the Beast is on the edge of the roof refusing to fight. Gaston grabs part of the castle and brandishes it like a club about to go for the kill. Then Belle announces her arrival. Beast is suddenly filled with the will to live, grabs the club and towers over Gaston, surprising him.
    • When Gaston yells "It's over, Beast, Belle is mine!", the Beast completely overpowers him, grabs him by the throat and holds him over the edge of the roof from the top of the castle.
    • Right after stabbing the Beast when Gaston realizes he's about to fall off the roof (having been previously spared that fate) and can only scream in terror as he plummets to this death.
    • The Beast when he drives Belle out of the West Wing; after a moment he realizes what he's done - quite possibly scared away his only chance of breaking the spell - and he buries his face in his hand in despair.
    • Belle is apprehensive when she meets the Beast for the first time, but when she asks him to come into the light and sees him properly, she has Oh, Crap! written all over her face.
    • Belle has one in the West Wing when the Beast finds her about to touch the rose. Understandable, given that earlier he had specifically told her not to go there.
    • As she's facing the wolves with a stick which quickly breaks, giving us a close-up of her panicked face right before a wolf lunges at her.
    • A more lighthearted example occurs during the "Beauty and the Beast" number when the Beast realizes that Belle wants to dance with him and he doesn't know how.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: When LeFou realizes he's accidentally thrown beer into Gaston's face, he shoots a nervous grin at Gaston before being Punched Across the Room.
  • Old Beggar Test: According to the prologue, the unnamed prince (the future Beast) refuses to let the woman enter in his castle and mocks her offering of a single rose. Unsurprisingly, she reveals herself to the Spoiled Brat, scolds him, and as punishment, she bewitches the whole castle.
  • Once Upon a Time: The film opens with a 'once upon a time' explanation of how the Prince was selfish and then was turned into the Beast by the beggar woman who asked him for shelter in exchange for a single rose, then turned into the enchantress when he kept refusing her.
    • The second half of the phrase includes "In a far away land", even though the movie makes it pretty clear early on that it's set in France. Of course, opening with "In 18th century France" wouldn't have fit nearly as well.
  • One-Man Army: The Beast single-handedly takes on a wolf pack and drives them away.
  • Our Nudity Is Different: Beast's bath scene; it's clear he's at his most naked here but since he's furry it also doubles as convenient censoring. This was not topped in a Disney film until Mulan.
  • Pain-Powered Leap: Cogsworth slides down the stair banister and jabs LeFou in the butt with a pair of scissors, causing this to happen. Less than 20 seconds later, Lumiere spews a blast of fire from the top of his head at one of the nameless villagers (who also gets launched into the air), saving the feather duster who was getting her "skirt" ripped out.
  • Pet the Dog: The Beast learning to feed the birds in the "Something There" sequence is a crystal clear indication that he's no longer an anti-villain and is trying to be more kind and noble.
  • Pimped-Out Cape: Belle gets one in the "Something There" scene. It's fur-trimmed.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Belle's gold dress is the most clearly pimped out; layered skirts, frills, etc. The green dress and pink dress were also likely made of very fine fabrics.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: In “Human Again,” Belle wears a pink dress and Beast wears a blue shirt and cape.
  • Playing Hard to Get: Gaston tends to think Belle wants him and is just making him catch her, which suits both his ego and his hunting trait. Naturally, she's honestly not interested in him.
  • Playing with Fire: Lumiere frequently lights and expands his flames, typically for emphasis. He also burns Cogsworth’s hand and sets a pie “en flambé” with them.
  • Please, I Will Do Anything!: Twice, someone beseeches the Beast to show mercy, and both times he does.
  • Plucky Girl: Belle repeatedly refuses to submit to the Beast and only treats him better when he starts reforming.
  • The Pollyanna: The servants are as desperate as the Beast for breaking the spell but they are also more optimistic and at least try to keep their lives as normal as they can.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Gaston is shamelessly misogynistic towards Belle to go in hand with his overinflated ego, frowning upon the idea of a woman reading or thinking independently (partially because he also disdains doing such things himself) and seeing marriage to Belle as nothing more than a prize to be won.
  • Poor Communication Kills: When Belle goes to rescue her father, the Beast assumes she's leaving forever, and the ornaments are worried. Chip asks Belle, when he stows away in her bag, if they did something wrong. Before Belle can reassure him, the asylum people come. It's all but said that Belle would return, once she cleared the air with her father and got him medical care, as she tells the Beast of course she came back to save him. After all, the Beast is her friend and she would have visited.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: Immediately after fighting off the wolves, the Beast turns to Belle while panting, stands for a beat longer, then falls over onto his side in the snow.
  • The Power of Love: To break the curse, Beast needs to learn to love another, and he has to earn their love in return.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: When the villagers finally break into the castle, it's quiet and dark and LeFou picks up Lumiere in order to see. Lumiere suddenly yells, "NOW!" Cue the lights coming on and all hell breaking loose.
  • Prejudice Aesop: The moral is not to judge somebody by their appearance because the "beast" is actually a man under a curse.
  • Pretty in Mink: They animators seem to like putting Belle in furs. Her wine-colored winter cape comes with white fur trim. In The Enchanted Christmas, she is also seen in a scarlet jacket with white fur trim, and later a matching cape and skirt for when she goes out into the woods.
  • Primal Stance: The Beast is stuck in this pose for the first half of the movie; in fact it's kind of hard to tell just how tall he is because he spends so much time bent over. The first shot of Belle and the Beast standing face-to-face shows that while he's taller than her she can still look him directly in the eye. The ballroom scene is one of the few times he's actually standing up straight and it becomes obvious that he completely dwarfs her. Gaston, who stands and walks upright, until near the end of the film, he reveals his evil self and starts to stand and walk like this.
  • Prince Charming Wannabe: Gaston, towards Belle; he thinks he's a dashing and heroic suitor that will sweep her off her feet. She is less than impressed. No one provides the trope image like Gaston!
  • Prince Charmless: Beast was this before the curse and before Belle came into his life; lack of princely manners was the reason he was cursed in the first place. Gaston is more definitely this, but only Belle shows much awareness of it.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: Belle, who later becomes a princess, briefly wears a pink dress.
  • Product Displacement: Zig-zagged when Disney started altering the opening credits for the Remasters and Recuts. Originally, two cards preceded the prologue, respectively reading "Walt Disney Pictures presents" and "In Association With Silver Screen Partners IV". For the 2002 Platinum Edition VHS and DVD, the latter card disappeared. On the 2010 Diamond Edition Blu-ray and DVD, the Silver Screen Partners IV credit returned to the Theatrical cut and the Work-in-Progress Edition, while the Extended Edition replaces it with the words, "The Special Edition of..." The 3D conversion replaced it with the words, "The 3D Edition of..." The 2016 Signature Edition Digital HD copy, Blu-ray, and DVD treat the Silver Screen Partners IV card the same way the Diamond Edition discs did.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: In the stage musical, Cogsworth and the wardrobe are portrayed as a couple but are much more reserved about it than Lumiere and the duster.
  • Proper Lady: For all the villagers thinking she is odd, Belle is well-mannered, sophisticated and has high morals.
  • Pun: "If it's not Baroque, don't fix it!" It's supposed to be a lame pun to add to the notion of Cogsworth having no sense of humour.
  • Punched Across the Room: Gaston does this to Le Fou for trying to make him smile. He's strong enough to do that.
  • Punished with Ugly: The Beast's curse in simplification is to be an ugly monster.
  • Purple Is Powerful: The Beast's cloak is a dark reddish purple. He also has a straight purple one (which is what he wears in nearly all other appearances). In this case, the association is with royal power.
  • Putto: One scene from the "Tale as old as time" musical number shows the ceiling of the ballroom decorated with winged putti, one of them holding a Cupid's Arrow.

    Tropes R to S 
  • Race Against the Clock: The Beast has until the rose's last petal falls to love another and earn their love in return to break the curse, otherwise he'll remain a beast forever.
  • Rage Against the Reflection: The Beast smashed all the mirrors in the West Wing and slashed up a portrait of himself in human form.
  • Rage Quit: Gaston during a game of chess during his Villain Song. It's one of the many Image Sources the film provides.
  • Raw Eggs Make You Stronger: Gaston eats several dozen eggs for breakfast every day; he says it's to "help me get large".
  • Reality Ensues:
    • The Beast’s character gets hit with this trope hard.
      • In the original, the Beast, despite being under the curse for years, still remained a kind gentleman who had a short fuse at worst. This movie turns him into an Audience Surrogate where he’s very depressed over the state of his curse and takes his anger out on anything.
      • The film also acknowledges the mental confusion suddenly being trapped in the body of an animal would create. The Beast at the start does animalistic things like growling and walking on all fours, while also desperately trying to retain his humanity by doing things like wearing some clothes.
    • Even though the Beast wins the fight against the wolves, he still gets badly wounded and is exhausted to the point of passing out. If Belle hadn't helped him back to the castle, he would have died. Truth in Television for large animals like bears, as they often have to take breaks during territorial fights to avoid exhaustion. Also true for people as well, since it's pretty common for people to pass out after a dangerous situation once their adrenaline goes down.
    • The Beast, after a rocky start with Belle, starts to improve his character. He gives her his entire library, plays with her in the snow, and reads with her. The castle ornaments hope this means the two are falling in love. Right? Wrong; just as the Beast is about to confess his feelings, Belle reveals she misses her father. The mirror reveals he is dying while searching for his daughter, and the Beast has a My God, What Have I Done? expression when he remembers this is his fault. It's not until he lets Belle go to rescue her father that Belle even considers the Beast a fiend, and goes to save him from the mob. She only realizes she loves him when helping him climb from the roof.
    • Gaston learns the hard way that aggravating a wounded animal twice his size is a really bad idea. Especially if the animal is intelligent.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot:
    • Belle's large carthorse Phillipe had to be written out of the stage musical, due to the challenges of having a horse onstage. In a similar vein, Chip's role was greatly reduced, since it was hard to portray a hopping tea cup on stage.
    • While Paige O'Hara was auditioning, a bit of her hair flew in her face, and she tucked it behind her ear. The animators liked that, so they included it in the beginning of the film.
  • Realistic Diction Is Unrealistic: Averted several times as The Beast noticeably stutters when he gets angry and Belle sometimes repeats herself when emotional.
  • Recycled Animation:
    • The dance between Belle and her Prince in the finale is reused animation of the dance between Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip in Sleeping Beauty. The original Sleeping Beauty pair had been drawn over to become the new Beauty and the Beast pair, and this was done because they were running out of time during the production of the movie.
    • The smoke seen during the transformation of the Beast to the Prince is real smoke, not animated. It was originally used in The Black Cauldron.
    • If one pays attention to the opening shot when it zooms to the castle, Bambi's mom can be seen grazing in the bottom right corner.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Gaston wears a red shirt and black pants and is an egomaniac.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Monsieur D'Arque, the corrupt asylum keeper, has them for quick characterization since this is basically his only scene.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Hot-headed, passionate Lumiere is a perfect Red, while intellectual, rule-oriented Cogsworth definitely qualifies as a Blue.
  • Refrain from Assuming:
    • “The Mob Song” is usually called “Kill the Beast,” due to that being what the mob is consistently chanting as they march on the castle.
    • The song “Belle” is sometimes called “Bonjour.”
    • “Belle (Reprise)” is often known as “Madame Gaston”
    • “Beauty and the Beast” is by far the most misnamed song from the movie, with “Tale as Old as Time” arguably being the more common title of the two.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Gaston loudly proclaims some stuff in the reprise that would heavily imply blackmailing Belle by having Maurice arrested under false pretenses of being a dangerous madman and the villagers agree with The Plan. Surely their "pure paragon" of manliness is kidding, right?
  • Rejected Marriage Proposal: Early on, Belle rejects Gaston's marriage proposal. She is portrayed completely sympathetically, as Gaston is a loutish, arrogant narcissist who feels entitled to her and she has zero interest in him. She pretends to be flattered and manages to kick him out of her house, while telling him "I just don't deserve you". Gaston ends up humiliating himself in front of several people, he having been so certain Belle would accept his proposal he'd already set up the wedding ceremony. Subsequently, he is driven to extreme measures to gain her hand in marriage, including threatening to send her father to an asylum unless she accepts.
  • Releasing from the Promise: The Beast allows Belle to return to her father, thereby, leaving the castle.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In Villeneuve's original version of the fairy tale, the heroine was the daughter of a king and a good fairy. A wicked fairy had tried to murder the heroine so she could marry her father and the heroine put in the place of the merchant's deceased daughter to protect her. In this film the heroine and the merchant, or inventor in this case, apparently are related.
  • Rescue Romance:
    • A turning point in Beast and Belle's relationship is when he rescues her from a pack of wolves, and she chooses to take him back to the castle and tend to him when she still has the option of fleeing (she fled the castle because she was so afraid of his violent behavior), but it was further helped by the understanding they came to as Belle treated Beast's wounds.
    • Gaston pretends he's doing this when he goes to kill the Beast because he paints the Beast as a monster. Belle doesn't buy it, saying she won't let him do it.
    • Played with at the movie's climax where Belle rescues Beast, not physically but emotionally. Beast lost all will to live and basically resigned himself to getting killed by Gaston. Seeing Belle return to the castle gave him incentive to survive the battle.
  • Roar Before Beating: When Beast finds Belle menaced by a pack of wolves, the first thing he does is grab the nearest wolf and roar in its face. Then he throws the wolf aside and jumps into the melee against the rest of the wolves.
  • Roof Hopping: Gaston does this to catch up to Belle when he can't get through the crowd. He later shows off this same skill (as does Beast, though he's justified by having claws) during the Climbing Climax.
  • Rule of Funny: The enchanted objects inexplicably moo like cows as they ignore Cogsworth's command to "Come with me!" during the Lead In to the "Human Again" song.
  • Rule of Symbolism:
    • The bed in the Beast's room is in shambles, with covers and furs heaped on it in a way that suggests an animal's nest.
    • When the Beast is transforming back to a human, his cape wraps around him like a cocoon or chrysalis as if to mimick the transformation between a caterpillar and a butterfly.
  • Rump Roast: Lumiere saves the feather duster from the villager yanking her feathers out by setting the seat of the villager's pants on fire with a large flare of flame. The villager is sent screaming up into the air.
  • Sacred Hospitality: The Prince defying this trope for the disguised enchantress is why he was cursed. The Objects are quick to follow it when another old person (Maurice) comes calling.
  • Same-Sex Triplets: The Bimbettes; the only difference is the color of their dresses.
  • Savage Wolves: Beast rescues Belle from a pack of vicious wolves.
  • Say My Name: The climactic scene towards the end where Belle calls out "Beast!" (The audio commentary notes that they'd forgotten to give him a name.)
  • Scarpia Ultimatum: Gaston volunteers to save Maurice from the madhouse under the condition that Belle marries him.
  • Scenery Porn: The CGI ballroom for the title song, certainly, but the castle also qualifies, particularly in the stage musical.
  • Scream Discretion Shot: When Mrs. Potts and the teacups pour scalding hot tea onto an intruder, the inevitable burns are censored by a cloud of steam and the camera panning up just before the tea hits and the intruder screams.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Gaston screams like the opposite of a paragon of manliness as he falls to his doom.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!:
    • After Beast rages at Belle for nearly touching the rose, Belle realizes she'd be in too much danger if she stayed. She comes back mainly because Beast saved her from a pack of wolves.
    • The angry mob, upon realizing they're in over their heads fighting a horde of enchanted furniture, turn tail and abandon Gaston at the castle. This includes Le Fou. Admittedly, they're in such disarray both during the fight and while fleeing that they would have been hard-pressed to notice that Gaston wasn't with them.
  • Servile Snarker: Downplayed. The servants are snarky to each other, but they’re very tactful towards the Beast, especially at the beginning.
  • Shapeshifting Heals Wounds: Once the Beast is transformed back to his human form, the stab wound inflicted by Gaston is healed.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely:
    • Belle during the ballroom scene. She was beautiful in her plain clothes and the time spent in the castle shows her in various elegant dresses. This was taking her beauty Up to Eleven.
    • The Beast himself is even more of an example, when he appears all neatened up, well-dressed and standing straight. It's those big, tender blue eyes.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: The main reason why all the servants try to get Belle and the Beast together is because it will break the curse.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Belle's simple country dress before she gets some finer clothes at Beast's castle was designed to be a lot like Dorothy Gale's to indicate her having a similarly innocent and yet strong-and-adventurous personality.
    • In at least one version of the musical, Belle attempts to talk about her latest novel to a disinterested bystander and describes the premise as being about a hunchback in Paris.
    • In the extended version there's also a scene where they read Romeo and Juliet together.
    • During the song "Belle" at the start there's reference to a fairy tale she just read.
    Belle: I just finished the most wonderful story, about a beanstalk and an ogre and...
  • Shown Their Work: The Beast's hind legs are digitigrade legs (see the Chicken Walker trope page for more information). When he transforms back into a human at the end, we see the "backwards knee" turn into his ankle - which is the correct anatomical match between human and canine legs. Someone did their anatomy homework.
  • Show Within a Show:
    • The book that Belle gets for free from the bookshop owner. As a little bonus, from the summary given, the book could well be Beauty and the Beast.
    Belle: (singing) Oh... Isn't this amazing? It's my favorite part because you'll see: Here's where she meets Prince Charming, but she won't discover that it's him 'til chapter three.
    • Belle sings that same melody during "Something There".
    Belle: (singing) New, and a bit alarming - Who'd have ever thought that this could be? True, that he's no Prince Charming, but there's something in him that I simply didn't see.
    • While in the bookshop, she mentions that the story has "Far off places, daring swordfights, magic spells, a prince in disguise." All of these could apply to her adventure.
  • Sigh of Love: The three lovestruck Bimbettes all sigh at Gaston at the intro to the "Gaston" song.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Belle reforms Beast first by standing up to him and then with more gentle affection. She's technically a captive with no authority the whole time.
  • Simple, yet Opulent: Belle's green and pink dresses are nowhere as fancy as her yellow ballgown but still something that a high-class lady would wear.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Belle shuns the good-looking but thoroughly vain and egomaniac Gaston and disliked the Beast initially because of his monstrous looks and serious temper problems. Once the Beast shows he is brave, thoughtful and capable of good, she falls for him.
  • Slapstick: The servants fight against the villagers was largely this, though there are one or two scenes that dip into frightening territory-like the scene when the Wardrobe dove off a balcony and landed on a guy was hilarious, but after a cut to Gaston looking for the Beast, we cut back to see her fighting other townsmen-and the guy she landed on is lying limp and lifeless in a crater where she landed on him, his weapon still in his hand, arms and legs sticking out of the hole and spread askew in what looks like death.
  • Skyward Scream: The Beast roars his despair to the sky after he let Belle go after her father.
  • Slasher Smile:
    • Gaston employs one when taunting the Beast:
    "What's the matter, Beast? Too "kind and gentle" to fight back!?"
    • His expression when stabbing the Beast before falling qualifies as well.
    • The Beast’s attempt at the “dashing debonair smile” showcases all his fangs. It’s Played for Laughs.
  • Sliding Scale of Anthropomorphism: The Enchanted Objects are mostly "cartoon face on top of an item", but certain details of their forms correspond to human features, like the implied noses of Mrs. Potts and Chip, the clock-hand mustache on Cogsworth, the "hair" of the Wardrobe, and the candle wax of Lumiere forming hair and, in the castle invasion, melting as if it were fearful sweat.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Gaston gets his own song about how great he is. However, the townspeople agree that he is that great and he is acknowledged as a skillful hunter.
  • Small Role, Big Impact:
    • The Enchantress is the perfect example of this trope: she’s only seen through stained glass in the prologue and isn’t even mentioned afterward, but she’s the sole reason why the plot of the movie exists.
    • Maurice. There really isn’t much to him as a character, but he’s the reason why Belle learned about the Beast’s existence and spent enough time with him to be able to fall in love. He’s also the blackmail behind Gaston’s plan.
      • If you believe in the popular Fanon that Belle couldn’t truly love someone who she believed was going to hold her hostage for the rest of her life, then he’s even more of this. Maurice being sick was the reason the Beast let Belle go.
    • Chip. Compared to the rest of the named servants, he has the least focus and significance to the plot...that is until the climax where he frees Maurice and Belle from their cellar. If that hadn’t happened, Beast would have died before Belle could break the curse.
  • Small Town Boredom: Belle is bored of "this poor provincial town".
  • Smug Snake: Gaston shows the classic "too confident to fail" attitude when he storyboards his Evil Plan.
  • Sneeze Interruption: Played as a gag when Maurice sneezes in the middle of his sentence saying that he's never seen a talking clock and gets steam on Cogsworth's face.
  • Soft Water: This is realistically averted, when one logically combines the Disney Villain Death and Freeze-Frame Bonus tropes from above: though his tumble was evidently into the castle's moat (though we never hear the splash for some reason), the villain must not have survived.
  • Snowball Fight: Belle is lucky that the enormous snowball done by the Beast didn't hit her (but him, instead.).
  • Snow Means Love: A whole song about them noticing their feelings have changed is in winter, and it is during an adorable snowball fight.
  • The Something Song: "The Mob Song".
  • Song of Many Emotions:
    • "Something There" is a song about how Belle and Beast are both curious about each other and possibly beginning to fall in love, but they're still pretty cautious and doubtful. There is also a verse sung by the servants about how they're surprised that Belle and the Beast are potentially coming together.
    • Downplayed for "Be Our Guest", which mentions Belle's fear, the servants' happiness at serving her, and how they used to be lonely, but the emotions are only a minor theme in the song; the main theme being the dinner and Belle's status as a guest.
    • "Beauty and the Beast" is mainly about Belle and Beast's love, but also talks about how they're surprised, confused, and slightly scared.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Gaston in his Villain Song, singing about "expectorating" in the same way as how "slick" he is.
  • Soulful Plant Story: Downplayed. The film isn't overly emotional, but there's still the rather emotional element of the rose that requires the Beast needing to fall in love with someone and earn their love in return before the last petal falls in order to break the spell that made him a beast.
  • Spanner in the Works: Chip ends up being one in the climax, unknowingly to Gaston. Gaston plans to keep Belle and Maurice locked up while the villagers kill the Beast. Chip figures out how to weaponize Maurice's invention to break down the door, freeing the two so they can ride to the castle.
  • Spirited Young Lady: Belle, with her literary tastes, intelligence, and stealth insults at annoying suits, is a middle-class version.
  • Standard Female Grab Area: Justified; Gaston is established as being strong enough to hold all the Babettes at once. When he grabs Belle, he quite easily lifts her by one hand into the cellar before locking the door. For what it's worth, Belle is fighting back the whole time.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: In the theatrical version, when LeFou leads another chorus of "No one Xs like Gaston!" this is somehow twice as funny with a live person on stage.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Gaston tracks down the Beast to his castle in order to kill him and take Belle for himself.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Gaston's plan for Belle is to cook for him, massage his feet, raise children, and nothing else; certainly no reading or thinking. Though it is worth noting that he considers 'thinking' a dangerous pastime for men too, especially ones as masculine as himself.
  • Stealth Insult: Belle throws a few at Gaston early in the film, such as "I just don't deserve you!"
  • Stealth Pun:
    • Very stealthy. During the dungeon scene, Maurice screams: "No, Belle!" twice. Belle's decision to take her father's place was a very noble one indeed.
    • While Cogsworth is giving Belle the tour, he asks if she wants to see the flying buttresses in the aviary. Wait for it... Now you get it.
    • The Beast was saved just in time before the last petal fell; as in, he was saved by the belle.
    • It’s never stated in the film, but the dog who’s been transformed into an ottoman’s name is Sultan. This is because the ruler of the Ottoman Empire was called a Sultan.
  • Steampunk: Maurice's automatic wood-chopping machine is steam-powered. It appears to be the only thing steam powered in the entire village as well as a new invention.
  • Stepford Smiler: The musical implies that the servants are this to an extent. While they act upbeat and cheerful, several bits of dialogue hint that they are secretly scared that they're slowly turning into inanimate objects.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Most of the Enchanted Objects are pieces of furniture that correspond to their original names, which not only means that their original jobs in the castle were well-suited, but that their transformations are also keyed to their monikers.
  • Stock Scream: The infamous Wilhelm Scream can be heard during the mob's battle with the enchanted castle's residents, right after Chip saves Belle and Maurice.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: Discussed. Belle falls in love with the Beast while she is his prisoner, but, as noted under Lima Syndrome, by that point she was more like an honored guest who wasn't allowed to leave, and she doesn't tell him that she loves him until he frees her.
  • Storming the Castle: Fitting with Gaston believing himself to be a heroic figure he rallies the townspeople to storm the castle of a horrible monster. It doesn't go well for them.
  • Straw Misogynist: "It's not right for a woman to read—soon she starts getting ideas... and thinking."
  • Stupid Evil: Gaston is this; it's clear that if he made an effort to be nice to Belle, the way the Beast did, he may have had a chance in winning her over. She tells her father she wants a friend, not arm candy. Instead, Gaston thinks flirting with Belle involves tossing her books in the mud, dirtying them, and physically cornering her when popping the question. Then when Belle reveals she was in a castle with a Beast and has evidence, Gaston thinks the best course of action is killing him and locking Belle and Maurice in a cellar, thinking this will somehow win her over.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While most of the story is told through Belle's eyes, the main focus is the Beast's redemption.
  • Sword over Head: In the climax, Beast overpowers Gaston and holds him over the ledge of the castle threatening to drop him to his death. However, Beast can't go through with it and grudgingly spares Gaston giving him a firm Get Out!.

  • Take a Third Option: Faced with the choice between marrying Gaston or watching her father get thrown into an insane asylum, Belle does neither. An unusual example, in that the third option proves just as unpalatable as the first two because Gaston turns the mob towards a new plan: kill the beast.
  • Take Me Instead: Belle says this to Beast when she wants to be in her father's place, and the Beast accepts her offer.
  • Take That!: "Here we come, we're 50 strong and 50 Frenchmen can't be wrong!"
  • Tame His Anger: Beast must learn to control his temper before anyone will love him.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: The dinner and show the servants put on pulls Belle out of her despair and awakens her natural curiosity once more.
  • Techno Babble: Cogsworth's architecture lecture: "As you can see, the pseudo-façade was stripped away to reveal the minimalist Rococo design. Note the unusual inverted vaulted ceilings. This is yet another example of the late neoclassic Baroque period." Rococo or Late Baroque and Neoclassical are two very distinct architectural movements. "minimalist Rococo" is an oxymoron, as is inverted vaulting. And pseudo-facade is redundant. It's clearly on purpose.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: In the shot where Mrs. Potts mentions Chip's brothers and sisters, at least one cup can be seen with long eyelashes.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Gaston is a parody of the hyper masculine hunter often found in fairy tales and other stories. It's even part of his Villain Song.
  • That Wasn't a Request:
    Beast: (to Belle) You will join me for dinner! That's not a request!
  • "They've Come So Far" Song: "Something There," in which the two main characters remark on how their view of each other has changed.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When Gaston opens the door to the West Wing and Beast turns to see an arrow is about to be fired at him, turns his head away. He lets out a growl, but because of his Heroic BSoD, just waits for the inevitable with no attempt to avoid.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: The curse heals the Beast's stab wound when Belle says she loves him, and he transforms back into a human. So the Enchantress wasn't all bad, giving him a chance to live.
  • Time Skip: Belle's father leaves at the end of summer, travelling to the fair - it could be some way away and such fairs lasted for at least a week, so Belle wouldn't be concerned if her father was gone for at least a month. Gaston proposes late-autumn; the leaves are falling. When Belle arrives at the castle and trades herself for her father, the first winter snow begins to fall. Belle spends the whole winter at the castle, during which time her father is constantly searching for her. At the end of the movie, the snow melts and their wedding takes place in the spring, as the flowers are blooming again. Ultimately thanks to time skips, the whole movie takes place over about six months.
    • The main problem the time skips create is in how far the Beast's castle is from the village - even if knowing where you're going helps and magic keeps it hidden, it could be anything from a couple of minutes ride, to several hours, to a week's travel.
  • Title Drop: For animated movies it's not as important, but for the magnificent theme song, they use the title drop, and if you haven't figured out what the song is about yet, then think about it.
  • Token Good Teammate: The bookkeeper is notably absent from the mob.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Watch closely the scene where Belle's father and his horse (Phillippe) arrive at a crossroads on their way to the fair. Phillipe clearly tries to pull Maurice towards the brighter, more cheerful path on the left, while Maurice adamantly chooses the foggy, eerily lit path on the right.
  • Took a Level in Badass: The Beast was already a tough fighter before, but he gets injured protecting Belle from the wolves, finally fainting from the exertion. When he fights Gaston after he realizes Belle came back, the Beast starts to think about how to curbstomp him. He chases him into a spire and then tackles him onto another rooftop with gargoyles, knowing a human wouldn't fare well from the impact. The Beast then lets Gaston smash a gargoyle while prowling among them and proceeds to win the fight because he wore Gaston out.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: "The Mob Song".
  • Tragic Monster: The Beast is this due to his past and his suffering that the curse caused.
  • Transformation Sequence: Beast gets a rather majestic one as the curse is broken and he is turning back into his human form.
  • Trivially Obvious: In the play, Lumiere prompts the Beast to "say something" about Belle's new dress. The Beast addresses Belle gracefully and informs her that the dress is blue. Cue the Beast being dragged aside for the clarification of something complimentary.
  • True Beauty Is on the Inside: Played with. Initially The Prince was handsome but vain so he was cursed to be a monster. Then he reformed and was still a monster until Belle confessed her love, at which point he turned back, but Belle wasn't impressed.
  • True Blue Femininity: Belle's main dress is white and blue (a lot like Dorothy Gale's), which the filmmakers stated is symbolic of her personality and situation.
  • True Love's Kiss: Variation—it isn't what breaks the curse on Beast himself (that's just Belle's declaration of love), but it does dissolve the rest of the spell to restore the castle and all the servants.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: The title characters, until the spell is broken, at least. After that, however, there is still Lumiere and Babette (the former feather duster). He is very cartoonish-looking (bordering on Gonk), while she is animated to be not only more realistic, but really sexy - they probably only got away with her design because it only showed up in the last couple minutes of the movie, and then only for two or three seconds.
  • Ugly Hero, Good-Looking Villain: The Beast and Gaston to serve as a 'who is the real monster' theme.
  • Uncommon Time: "Gaston" is a waltz (6/8 time), although Gaston and LeFou dancing together gives that away.
  • Unflinching Walk: Belle in a somewhat comedic example; she's able to thread her way through town on what appears to be a market day, effortlessly blocking falling water with a hanging sign as she passes under it, all the while reading a book.
  • Unfulfilled Purpose Misery: The castle servants (transformed into household utensils by the witch's curse) are overjoyed at seeing Belle enter the castle, because it finally lets them do what their new forms were designed to do (clean, cook, accessorize, etc.), the Beast having no use for banquets or well-maintained rooms.
    Lumière: Life is so unnerving, for a servant who's not serving.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Even though Beast spared his life in the climax, Gaston responds by nearly stabbing him to death, only to accidentally fall off the tower and die. It counts as a Disney Villain Death.
  • Ungrateful Townsfolk: The villagers treat Belle like an outcast and Maurice like he's crazy, solely due to their intelligence. But at the same time, they worship Gaston, who is clearly an uncouth, vile brute. They throw Maurice out of the tavern when he begs them for help, and later watch as Gaston tries to blackmail Belle into marrying him. None of them listen to Belle's insistence that the Beast is good, instead believing Gaston's unfounded rant about the Beast coming to take their children, and locking Belle and Maurice in their own cellar so they won't interfere. All in all, they aren't the nicest bunch of people.
  • Unknown Character: The sorceress who put the curse on the Beast and his castle in the first place. We learn nothing about her and she only appears in the stained glass windows of the prologue. Yet without her, there would be no movie.
  • The Un-Smile: When Lumiere tries to get the Beast to smile for his date with Belle, he grins so that all his fangs stick out. Thankfully he learns to smile much more naturally later.
  • Ur-Example: Although it's not the first animated movie to do this, Beauty and the Beast is the first Disney movie where famous musicians cover the movie's love/whatever ballad during the credits.

    Tropes V to Z 
  • Van Helsing Hate Crimes: Gaston invokes this in the villagers to rile them up and storm the Castle to kill Beast.
  • Verbal Tic: The Beast tends to stutter when he’s frustrated.
    Beast: You wanna-you wanna stay in the tower?
  • Victorious Chorus: During the final ballroom dance/stained-glass window pullback.
  • Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey: LeFou and Gaston have this dynamic toward the end of the film, when Gaston ceases to be Played for Laughs and LeFou remains a Butt-Monkey.
  • Villains Want Mercy: After invading the castle and kicking him while he's done, Gaston pathetically begs for his life as Beast is dangling him over the edge of the tower.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • Gaston suffers this when Belle throws him out of her house:
    Gaston: (grabbing LeFou by the throat) I'll have Belle for my wife! Make no mistake about *THAT*!...
    • Then he loses it altogether when he realizes Belle loves The Beast, spurning Gaston once and for all.
    Gaston: If I didn't know any better, I would you would have feelings for this monster.
    Belle: He's no monster, Gaston! YOU are!!
  • Villainous Crush: Gaston's crush on Belle is villainous because he is goes to vile and extreme lengths to make her accept his marriage proposal.
  • Villainous Glutton: Gaston may not be fat, but he eats 5 dozen eggs for breakfast.
  • Villainous Valour: Gaston has a good reason to boast about his strength. He fights toe-to-toe and does it pretty well against Beast, even when Beast is finally over his despair and stops letting himself get beaten. He also rips off some kind of marble/stone ornament from the castle with little to no effort, and is shown to be able to carry approximately 400+ lbs (The Triplets sitting on a bench) with one hand and with very little effort, which places his strength at roughly the same level as that of an Olympic weightlifter.
  • Villain Song: "Gaston" is a monument to Gaston's titanic ego. Also, "The Mob Song" is lead by Gaston at his most evil and describes his plan to kill his rival in love.
  • "The Villain Sucks" Song: The praises heaped upon Gaston in "Gaston" are somewhat double-edged, since he bites in wrestling matches, takes cheap shots, and overturns tables when he losses.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Gaston is loved by all the other villagers except Belle and is apparently the most powerful and influential person there. This means none of them object to an ailing old man who's been desperately searching for his daughter being carted off to an insane asylum based on an odd story that might have come from stress. Then they are easily convinced by Gaston to kill the Beast once his existence has been confirmed even though Belle is the only one who knows him and begs them to reconsider. They always thought she was weird anyway for her bookishness ("I wonder if she's feeling well.") What's even worse is that they follow him out of loyalty, and not out of fear, and it is implied from the Villain Song that they love him specifically because of his despicable acts.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Lumiere and Cogsworth. Type 2, good friends who are very different and often butt heads. Their relationship is said to mirror that of the two animators who drew their characters. In fact, a special feature on the Diamond Edition of the film shows the two animators performing the final scene with Lumiere and Cogsworth human again in live-action form.
  • Walking in Rhythm: In the eponymous opening song, Belle walks through town singing and walking in step with the beat. She of course ignores the townfolk's commentary during her song.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: The Beast spends half the time of the movie wearing only pants and a purple cape.
  • Wanderlust Song: Sung by Belle.
    "I want adventure in the great wide somewhere!
    I want it more than I can tell!"
  • Welcoming Song: "Be Our Guest", as the denizens of the castle introduce themselves to Belle.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Gaston desires Belle, who everyone in town finds odd; it's not that they don't understand what he sees in her (she's widely-regarded as beautiful), they just don't understand why he bothers with such an obvious personality mismatch when he could have any other woman in town, including several who are nearly as good-looking. In addition, he can't understand what she sees in the Beast.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never do see what happens to the Magic Mirror—it disappears from Gaston's belt once they break down the doors and is never shown again. It could have been lost/broken during the battle, discarded because he didn't need it anymore, or despite not being drawn there it was on his belt all along and fell with him into the moat. In the end, it would likely have disappeared when the spell was broken.
  • What Have I Become?: This was the Beast's personality (with some Jerkass thrown in) at the beginning of the movie, as he's a horrified as everyone else at becoming a beast.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Belle and the Beast give a back-and-forth version of this to each other after the wolf fight. Both Sides Have a Point in that the Beast should control his temper, but Belle intentionally broke the one rule he set over her. They then set a truce where Belle cleans up his wolf injuries and thanks him for saving her life.
  • What You Are in the Dark: After Beast manages to fight off the wolves, he is left injured and collapses from them. Belle had the chance to leave and who wouldn't? The Beast imprisoned her father, kept her as a prisoner, and was a complete jerkass up to rescuing her. But instead, Belle takes him back to the castle to nurse his wounds.
  • Whoosh in Front of the Camera: As the objects lead Maurice to the fireplace, the Beast is seen in the foreground looking from upstairs, then running off.
  • Wild Hair: The Beast has this in a mane form at his most beastly. It's better groomed by the end of the movie as he recovers his humanity.
  • World-Healing Wave: After the Beast is restored to life and humanity and he and Belle have The Big Damn Kiss, the resultant magical fireworks shower a sparkling rain over the castle and restore it to its original state; the Enchanted Objects are similarly restored to the humans and animals they once were.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Apparently the Enchantress has no problem with cursing an 11-year-old boy with a Baleful Polymorph. It has been confirmed by the Beast's artist Glen Keane, and also in the filmmakers commentary for the extended edition that the rose "would bloom until his 21st year".
  • Wound Licking: The Beast licks his wounds after rescuing Belle from the wolves, while Belle tries to clean them with fresh hot water instead.
  • Wrongfully Committed: Gaston tries to blackmail Belle into marrying him by threatening to throw her father Maurice into an asylum (the older man rambles about Belle having been taken prisoner by the Beast). When Belle returns home to save her father, Gaston leads a mob to commit Maurice until she reveals the Beast's existence to the villagers.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Gaston's plotting in the second half of the film is a result of quickly adapting to meet new conditions. Belle refuses to marry him? Use Maurice's rantings to declare him insane and blackmail her. She proves Maurice was telling the truth? Rally the town to kill the Beast now that he knows Belle loves him. Find himself outmatched? Beg for his life and then backstab.
  • "Yes"/"No" Answer Interpretation: When Belle was first taken hostage in the castle, she was kept in the dungeon. Lumiere tells Beast that, if Belle is supposed to fall in love with him, it would probably help to give her an actual room. Despite wording the suggestion in the most tactful way possible, Beast growls at Lumiere so fiercely his flames are almost lit out before storming off. Lumiere takes that as a no.
    Lumiere: (nervously) Then again maybe not!
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: A villainous version. As Gaston sulks after Belle's rejection, LeFou and his buddies cheer him up by showing him everything he's got going for him.
  • You Have to Believe Me!:
    • There's a beast in the old castle! Really!
    • The Beast is nice! Really!
    • Chip says "Mama, there's a girl in the castle!" but Mrs. Potts dismisses him with "Now, Chip, I'll not have you making up such wild stories."
  • You Monster!: Belle tells this to Gaston.
    Gaston: Belle, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you had feelings for this monster.
    Belle: He's no monster, Gaston. You are!
    • To the Beast in the "Home" song from the stage show version - "For Papa I will stay / But I don't deserve to lose my freedom in this way... you monster!"
  • YouTube Poop: Gaston's status as a Memetic Badass stems from his portrayal as such in many poops.
    Stage Musical 
  • Adaptational Expansion: Several more songs are added to the musical, including a duet where Belle and her father sing about a promise for a new life, Gaston proposes to Belle and "dances" with her, a lament from the Beast about winning Belle over, and the servants talking about their hopes about the curse being broken.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Gaston is even worse here. He manhandles Belle during his proposal, picks her up against her wishes and plans to keep seeing women on the side when they are married,
  • Age Lift: For pragmatic reasons, the prince is not eleven years old when he's cursed. Instead, he's an adult.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Belle lamsphades this; she said she wanted adventure, and she ends up trapped in a castle to save her father's life. It's not the adventure she wanted.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: While arguing with Lumiere, Cogsworth says it was unfair that the Enchantress cursed everyone as well, especially since a few unlucky servants are turning into permanent inanimate objects. After all, they didn't move to toss out a beggar woman. Lumiere sadly replies that they could have raised the prince better so he would understand Sacred Hospitality. After all, he, Mrs. Potts and Cogsworth are the closest thing to parents.
  • It's All My Fault: The servants believe that if they had raised the master better, he would not have been cursed. The Beast doesn't blame them, for what it's worth.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: More bronze at first; the Beast at first is rude to everyone and imprisons a man who says he'll leave and not trouble him, but it's noted that he doesn't blame Lumiere, Cogsowrth or Mrs. Potts for the curse. He's not so much of a jerk that he'll deny responsibility for his actions.
  • Really Gets Around: Gaston gallivants with all the ladies in the town. He tells them they won't stop seeing each other after he's married.
