Fan Fic Recommendations
Caveat lector!

What follows are recommendations made by Tropers for Fan Fics. You will notice that the tropers have signed their recco's. After a few samples, you will be able to judge whether you might be interested in the 'fic, based on who recommended it. No-name recommendations will be zapped. Nobody would back up the recco. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be.

Do warn when a fanfic may descend into homosexual or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Animorphs
  • Roach Patrol: Book 55: The Difference , by Dinosaur Nothlit, picks up shortly after the Animorphs epilogue leaves off, and charts the adventures of the remaining Animorphs as well as their new friends as they escape The One and are captured by Kelbrids, ancestral enemies of the Andalites. It's well written and entertaining, and deals with different alien species with refreshing thoughtfulness and creativity.
  • Roach Patrol: Pure Sunshine, by attica. Rachel/Tobias AU, set after the war. They won, and Rachel's still alive, but Tobias has given up on being human and does his best to live as a hawk. It's sad and sweet and hopeful.

Avatar The Last Airbender
  • The Affable Paranoiac: A Million Ways To Say I Love You is a compilation of short fics based on just about every ship you would expect and many you wouldn't; now finished.
  • Gemmifer: A Long And Lonely Night takes places during one night shortly after Azula seized Ba Sing Se and describes the thoughts and feelings of nearly the entire cast, as they all seem to lie awake that night. Very atmospheric.
  • Liffguard: Water Tribe is a fan comic by Rufftoon with the premise that Zhao is spared by the Ocean Spirit, losing his memories and identity but not his basic personality. He's just as much of a Magnificent Bastard as he always was.
  • Extraintrovert: Gold Eyed Monster is one of the few Azula-centric fics worth reading. No Shipping, no Raping The Dog, no Heel Face Turns, no Freudian Excuses; just Azula being magnificent.
  • Acacia: In His Shoes has a fairly basic Freaky Friday premise, but executes it beautifully. Both Zuko and Sokka react realistically to being forced to live each other's lives, and the subsequent plot diverges from that of canon in all the right places to reflect their different approaches to problem-solving.
    • Black Charizard: Backing up the recco. All the characters are spot-on, and when it differs from the canon, it does so creatively. It's very dark and heartbreaking though, unsurprising given the moment of the story in which the fanfic takes place, and the seriousness of their predicament. Still, be warned if you prefer lighter stuff.
  • Potman: Spiral's Beginning is the story of the very first Avatar, fixing a big war between all the four nations. Written in the style of a fairy tale, and since this is a fairy tale if anything, it works very well.
    • Black Charizard: In the same vein, Creation in Nine Acts narrates in a Genesis-like manner the creation of the Avatar World, the elements, and the rise of the first Avatar.
  • Potman: In 100 Years, the imprisoned King Bumi, while not annoying his guards, reminisces his century-long life. Very good read.
  • Black Charizard: Teaching Toph features Aang teaching Toph the philosophies of the other elements, starting with Airbending. The lessons are entertaining and well done, and even though it centers around Aang and Toph to the point of almost excluding the other characters, it's still pretty friendshippy, so it probably counts as Gen Fic. Also, it's nice to see a different side of Toph for a change, even if her character might seem a little off in certain parts.
  • Black Charizard: Watch and Review, Please is a short one-shot showing an in-story review of the play at Ember Island, complete with the reactions of the in-story actors and a little surprise at the end for them. A fun read, if you enjoyed the episode.
  • Mew24ever: Sleeping Close is a Sokka-centric fic examining the role Sokka plays in the Gaang, told through the eyes of Hakoda.
  • Extraintrovert: Cog In The Machine is what occurs when stories are permitted to escape from their author. Originally intended as a succinct parody of poorly written (a.k.a. IKEA Erotica) Sokka-capture fics (which were in turn originally parodies of poorly written Katara-capture fics), by the author’s own admission the characters got away from her and it rapidly evolved into a contemplative, loquacious, heavily character-driven four-way mental battle between Sokka, Azula, Ty Lee and Mai bordering on a Thirty Xanatos Pileup while still keeping the characters believable.
  • Hasone: Inspector Iroh is a fan-comic, featuring the avatar characters, with their relationships and personalities mostly intact, in an modern-day-like AU. The main storyline follows Zuko and Iroh as detectives in a noir heavy setting. Anybody with a modicum of artistic skill can contribute and it's absolutely brilliant. To get a feel for the AU, check out this fanart (yes, fanart of fanart). Also check out the colored version of the big panel here
  • Otempora: Other Brother is an AU fic set before "Boy in the Iceburg". Hakoda finds a scarred Fire Nation boy in a lifeboat. Hakoda takes Zuko back to the Water Tribe, where he befriends Sokka and Katara. The characters are believable and, though still early in its run, seems to be building up nicely.
  • Universalperson: And as a counterpoint to that, we have a fanfic that relly should be on here: Tempest in a Teacup by Aka Vertigo. AU Zutara where Iroh finds a little Katara after a Fire Nation raid. Extremely well-written and thought out, although the sequel is dead with one chapter.
  • Revlid: Lanterns is a charming fic set after the end of Season 3 -- a very well pulled off Azulaang (yes, you heard that right), with moments of Kataang. There is no Die For Our Ship!

Babylon 5
  • SAMAS: Chronicles of the Crusade Book 1 and Book 2 by Ken Harper, a Stargate SG-1 and Babylon 5 cross. An SGC starship finds a mysterious gate in the asteroid belt that ends up taking them to the climax of the movie A Call To Arms, just as the Drakh are attacking Earth. They don't prevent the plague from being spread to Earth, but the SGC quickly throws itself into the effort to save it. Their actions bring about a change in both their Earth and the ISA.

Batman
  • Looney Toons: Chris Dee's Cat Tales 'verse, comprising (as of June 2008) 55 individual stories of several chapters each. This Catwoman-centric series manages to be Original Flavour while tossing so much of the recent reimaginings of Catwoman into the trash. Wonderfully funny and deeply dramatic by turns, skillfully and entertainingly written, it is worth the time to read. (Which you must do from the very beginning, or you'll have no idea what's going on or why in the later stories.)
  • Roach Patrol: Capsrock on Livejournal is hosting a collection of anonymous short fics written upon request, Batman Kink Meme. The quality ranges from decent to god-like, and the subject matter ranges from NSFW to Nightmare Fuel.
  • Roach Patrol: Glossing on Livejournal's The Pleasures of Civic Duty is absolutely stunning. It's Golden Age Bruce/Dick slash, and it combines the innocent, lighthearted tone of back when Batman was good clean fun with the awkward 50's era subjects of homosexuality, racism, and prejudice. And it does it with style and flair and a happy ending.

Beauty and the Beast (Disney)
  • Solandra: Remember the Gaston from the film who Belle said was the true "beast"? TrudiRose's A Man of Stature puts Gaston in the Beast's shoes by having him transformed into a dwarf (not a beast, but close enough) by the same Enchantress who cursed the Beast and then following Gaston through the years as he tries various plans to reverse the curse. Does Gaston genuinely fall in love and become reformed by that love as the Beast was? And can the author actually show all this without distorting Gaston's character beyond recognition? Yes to all the above!

Bleach

BloodPlus

Brimstone
  • Looney Toons: Ken Wolfe's Heaven Can Wait is a masterful story in which Vampire Princess Miyu and Fox's shortlived Brimstone intersect. It is so well written that the reader need not be familiar with either series to understand and enjoy the story -- he will learn everything he needs to know about them before he's more than a third of the way through. Without impeding the story at all, even for a reader who is familiar.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel
  • Man Called True: The works of Meltha, particularly anything dealing with Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Angel. I have yet to see someone else nail the characters quite so well. No new ones in a while, but Meltha was rather prolific before then. Personal favorites: "Who Died and Made You the Iron Chef?" and "Never Send Mom and Sis to a Vamp". Mostly Original Flavor with some angsty diversions.
  • Looney Toons: I Am What I Am by M. McGregor. At one end of his life, a 90+-year-old Xander lies dying. At the other end of his life, a teenage Xander decides to dress up as himself, only older, for a fateful Halloween. Time twists, and the life of the Slayer(s) will never be the same again. Definitely worth a read; and as an extra bonus the author has posted an annotated and footnoted version of the story on his LiveJournal that is invaluable to anyone wanting to study the mind of a writer and how/why he writes things the way he does. Warning: some F/F and poly shipping toward the end of the story, but nothing actually explicit.
  • Luc: Martian Manhunter, a Veronica Mars/Buffy The Vampire Slayer fusion that is almost indescribable due to the brilliant twists it takes.
  • Looney Toons: Also by Mediancat, the author of Martian Manhunter: the "Have Faith" series -- three stories based around a unique crossover between Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Daria. The first is April 10, 1997, in which a mandatory psych examination in prison reveals that Faith may not be who she thinks she is. It is followed by The Sum of Their Parts and That's What You'll Take to the Grave. Well written and implements a crossover by way of a device that I don't think I've ever seen before.
  • Micah: Dwarf Bread by keswindhover. The Buffybot ends up in Ankh-Morpork; Hilarity Ensues. A chaptered fic, extremely funny, which perfectly captures the voices of both the Discworld and Buffy characters.
  • Robert: Not Even Jimmy Olsen, the season three Scooby Gang, as seen from outside.
  • Robert: Aadler's backstage series which takes place on the edges of the main series.
  • Robert: When Hellmouths Collide, a crossover with Hercules The Legendary Journeys.
  • John17Martin: There are lots of Willow/Tara fanfics. Two of the best are Bread by Tulipp and Fragments of Perception by Cyd. Both stories start with the season five finale, The Gift, but they go in different directions than the Buffy TV show did. Both stories have girl/girl sex scenes, but the sex is the natural consequence of the plot.
  • AkatsukiDaybreak: Seeking the Incomplete, a crossover with Fullmetal Alchemist. Willow attempts to use alchemy to bring Buffy back from the dead and the Slayer ends up in Amestris. A great story with near perfect characterization, but it's updated irregularly.
  • AkatsukiDaybreak: My Daughter…the What? is a Law And Order Special Victims Unit and Buffy The Vampire Slayer crossover in which Buffy finds out that Elliot is her biological father. There’s also The Flipped Side of My Daughter…The What? in which Faith rather than Buffy is Elliot’s daughter.
  • AkatsukiDaybreak: Shadows’ Waiting is another L&O: SVU and Bt VS cross. The SVU team and the Scoobies are both after the same serial killer and the paths inevitably cross. There are some sexually explicit scenes, but are part of the plot.
    • Luc: Speaking of SVU/BTVS crosses, Not All Monsters Are Demons, a rather interesting and creepy fic about what exactly would cause the Buffy crew to work with the Special Victims Unit.
  • Otempora: I'm not particularly familiar with the Buffyverse, but Enigmatic Absurdities is a House/Angel crossover fic. Basically, it's about what would happen if the House team had to diagnose vampirism? There's some Character Exaggeration, but the interactions between the doctors and the Scoobies is priceless.
  • Andrew: Jet Wolf is a particularly good writer with a talent for character voices. Her continuation of Buffy focuses on returning the Scoobies to their family dynamic and does so in a realistic manner. Essentially, if you disliked General!Buffy, Plotless!Xander or Distanced!Scoobies this fic is the answer. You can test the waters here with some of her gen fic.

Calvin And Hobbes
  • Solandra: Calvin may never age in the comics, but Kenya Starflight's Reminiscence has him grow up and experience the joys and sorrows of life beyond childhood. Despite the fact that the fic is about Calvin moving away from the whimsy and magic of his childhood that was the major charm of the comic, it works because his life beyond that portrayed as challenging and wonderful in its unique way, and the the ending hints that the childhood magic will never really be dead for someone like Calvin.

Chip And Dale Rescue Rangers
  • Ranchoth: Chris Fischer's Of Mice and Mayhem. Many people write cartoon fanfic; not as many write and draw 231-page graphic novels that dive headfirst into high drama. Must be seen to be believed (in a good way).

Captain Planet

Code Lyoko
  • Ari Rockefeller: Code Lyoko has Code: Lyoko - A Retelling by G-Force, in which the first season (thus far) is reimagined with an ACC (Author Created Character, a.k.a. an Original Character) named Jin, who is Yumi's twin brother, who doesn't suffer from 90% of the flaws of typical ACC characters. I was on the fence about whether or not to take a big(ger) interest in Code Lyoko, when I stumbled upon this story, which converted me.
  • Seraphie: A Typical Day is a completely over-the-top parody that makes fun of every possible aspect of the show, and eventually involves Transformers. There's a sequel, too!

Cowboy Bebop

Cthulhu Mythos

Danny Phantom
  • CP: Checkmate is written amazingly, with an original plot in which Vlad once again takes upon himself to create a Xanatos Gambit, and for once... it works. He manages to toy with Danny's mind, going even further to get his We Can Rule Together, as far as break Danny to get what he wants to make it easier to toy with Danny's mind, and several Not So Different moments occur. And in the end, Danny reluctantly leaves his home and heads off for Vlad's mansion. The fanfiction is still in progress and has been going on for almost two years now, which is quite amazing, especially considering it's not on hiatus.

Daria

Dead Like Me
  • AkatsukiDaybreak: Dead Like Bleach is a Dead Like Me and Bleach crossover with George being transferred to Karakura Town to work under Kisuke Urahara. A fantastic read with amazing characterization. It hasn’t been updated in over a year, but the author claims it isn’t dead yet.

Death Note
  • DomaDoma: Rewrite is the only romantic Death Note fanfic I have ever actually liked, including fics with Halle/Mello, which I ostensibly ship. It is an L/Misa AU from Misa's point of view -- and let me tell you, a more understated kind of love does wonders for her character. She's still a Kira supporter, the Sakura Incident still occurred, and now Light has apparently caught on to the fact that she knows L, so the whole thing still has that essential Death Note air of tension that every other romance in the fandom lacks. Damn good -- updates every month and a half or so.
  • DomaDoma: Wall of Illusion, meanwhile, writes some of the most eloquent and generally awesome Death Note gen I've ever seen, with a concentration on the next-gen arc. (The A Series Of Unfortunate Events crossover didn't pan out so well, though, and is a Dead Fic besides.)
  • CP: Loveliness could be summarized in three words: Death. Note. Fluff. Which is very rare to stumble upon, considering that Death Note is such a dark series, but this oneshot is not only very in-character, it focuses to some extent on character flaws without making it a Flanderization, and still keep the happy aura of the oneshot. Also, it's a Light/Misa/L oneshot, a threesome that this troper is quite addicted to and the romance between the three is not too cheesy or blatant- might be considered a Gen fic, though this troper doesn't really understand certain fanfiction tropes.
  • Cassius: Welcome to Wammy by Mikanis is the greatest fic I've ever read in any fandom. It is about Mello's life pre-DN continuity, and has an almost-as-good sequel, Morning Star, still coming out. There is also a companion fic, Ashes to Ashes, about Near, but that's on hold until Morning Star's completion. This is a trifecta to check out.

Discworld
  • Ronfar: "Odd One Out", by intrasonic, is the best piece of Fan Fiction writing I've ever seen. It reads like it was written by Terry Pratchett himself, which is saying a lot. Sadly, it's a Dead Fic. (His Star Ocean 3 fics are equally impressive.)
  • Micah: Dwarf Bread by keswindhover. The Buffybot from Buffy The Vampire Slayer ends up in Ankh-Morpork; Hilarity Ensues. A chaptered fic, extremely funny, which perfectly captures the voices of both the Discworld and Buffy characters.
  • Roach Patrol: Transformations by Sam-Storyteller, also known as Sam Starbuck, an all-around stellar writer. An AU where Sybil Ramkin does not survive Gaurds! Gaurds!, and so when Angua is added to the expanding Night Watch, Sam Vimes falls (very reluctantly) in love. PG, and very sweet.
    • The rest of their Discworld fic is here. My personal favorite is the two-part fic, In The Blood, were Vimes is turned into a werewolf, but your mileage may vary.

Doctor Who
  • Namta: "Threads", by Vali, manages to tie angst, stream-of-consciousness, and really hot snogging into a fairly tightly-plotted part of the show's history, while making everything look completely reasonable. Also, "Huntsman" by Lizbee.
  • Micah: "We'll Always Have... You Know" by nostalgia_lj is a hilarious Doctor/Donna oneshot, featuring an aggressively clueless version of the Doctor.
  • Extraintrovert: The End of the Universe is only three and a half thousand words, but one of the most powerful things you will ever read. A guaranteed Tear Jerker.
  • Ms Shaw: The Slow Path, or Two and a Half Centuries in Two and a Half Days by Amy Wolf is an AU on the ending of "The Girl in the Fireplace." To be honest, Mickey and Rose’s side of the story is good but not amazing; it's the Doctor's 250 years through Earth's history that's a brilliant piece of storytelling. The chapter with the Doctor in San Francisco is one of the best moments of fanfiction.
  • theorc: People Used to Dream about the Future is not only one of the best pieces of fanfic I've read in this fandom, but possibly of all time. The plot, the Unreliable Narrator, and the ending... to say too much about it would be to spoil it, but it's a must-read. (The link is to the final part of the story, but links to all the other ones are on top as well.)
  • alliterator: A short piece called The Moment Has Been Prepared For by Lurky McLurklurk is a brilliant piece of Fix Fic that's great for those suffering after the ending of "Journey's End" (major spoilers for JE, however).
  • Jaded Lady: There is a rather fascinating Alternate Universe version of Nu-Who Season Four over on Live Journal of all places. The basic premise is what could have happened had the Master not died at the end of season three and the Doctor actually made good on his plan to imprison the Master on the Tardis and drag him around the universe. As expected, there's a bit of slashy Foe Yay towards the end (so be warned), but it's so well done that you honestly don't mind.
  • Silent Hunter: The Doctors' Mission Statement: Very short, but very, very true.

Drawn Together
  • Sandmaster: Drawn Together by Love is one of the few Drawn Together fanfiction series that is neither slash, femslash, or mindless Xandir worship. It manages to capture all the characters' voices, but unlike the show, it actually gives them some depth. Especially recommended for fans of Princess Clara or Toot Braunstein.
  • Sandmaster: Life in the Drawn Together House is another effort by the same author. The main difference is that rather than telling stories, it focuses on providing snapshots of the housemates' regular daily lives, presented through humorous exchanges of dialogue.

The Dresden Files

Dungeons and Dragons
  • FLCNPNCH: "Adventuring for Dummies" can be summed up as the bastard child of Dn D and One Piece. That's the only way to describe it, really. It lovingly makes fun of how unbalanced the 3.5 rules are, and everybody frequently breaks the fourth wall and is genre savvy, to the point where the government creates a law enforcement group made up soley of adventurers.

Enchanted

Eureka seveN
  • Space Chief: The Fire In The Heart saga by Ken-Goh; an epic-length original flavor, post-canon story that brilliantly expands on the world of the series. The characterization is nearly perfect, and the whole thing is well-worth the read. The first part can be found here.

Final Fantasy VI
  • Outsyder0486: I haven't done a lot of searching for Final Fantasy VI novelizations, but that's only because I found a complete novelization in Final Fantasy VI: The Novel. It's a good read, and the author nails the characterization perfectly. If you'd like to experience the story of Final Fantasy VI, but don't feel like actually playing the game, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better alternative than this.

Final Fantasy VII
  • wescotta: In "Writing of Wrongs", God's own Literary Task Force (they write the book of Life) is blackmailed into saving Aeris, of Final Fantasy VII fame so that a malevolent ex-writer relegated to sub-text can use her to tap into the collective minds of fan-fiction writers and write himself back into existence--as a god, to boot! Rarely takes itself too seriously, and has some brilliant individual scenes. It is also quite lengthy.
  • Clendy82: Frank Verderosa's Final Fantasy VII Internet Series has more or less set the standard for all FFVII fan fiction. The first story is quite rough, particularly the action sequences which seem to be drawn directly from the game, and a somewhat cliched storyline. But somewhere in the second or third stories he really begins to hit his stride; all of a sudden the characters cease to be borrowed video game guest stars as he makes them his own with in-depth characterization and increasingly impressive storylines. As far as shipping goes, there's only one major one, Cloud/Tifa. that comes about after wagonloads of fan input and weighing of pros and cons. Two others, Elena/Vincent and Aeris/Reeve might throw more traditional fans off a bit, but they turn out to be quite well written. Highly recommended.
    • Scifantasy: The copy of the stories linked above, though, cuts off early, halfway through the eighth (yes, eighth) story. A mirror of the original site has been made here (lots of popup ads, though)--it finishes story eight, and mentions a ninth story, which seems to have never been written.
  • FLCNPNCH: "Frigging Fantasy VII" is an utterly hilarious retelling of the game. Any story where Cloud is renamed Trent because his father thinks that 'Cloud' is a pussy name, Shinra gets taken over by the Hair Club for Men (the president of which isn't just the president - he's also a client), and the Midgar Zolom subdues its prey using a bunch of children that sing 'Every Sperm is Sacred' has to be worth at least a look.

Fire Emblem
  • Sara: The Only One I Have Left by Jayden und Verwelkt. Extremely heartwarming scenario between Roy and Eliwood circa Fuuin no Tsurugi. Other reccomendations: Shadows Under the Oak Tree by trimurti. Rekka no Ken, a long but very interesting take on Canas's backstory and relationship with his wife. Vertigo by the above author is a heart-wrenching Fiora fic dealing with her Survivors Guilt. For Seisen no Keifu fans, To The Winds, Sing by Nisei; a beautiful post-game Edain-centric fic. A Kitten for Leila by Kitten Kisses is a rare well-done AU depicting a happier version of the Matthew/Leila romance. For parody lovers, The Diary of Kelly by Fimbulvetr is parody pastiche fic of all the badly-written Tatcitian Mary Sue and diary fics in the Fire Emblem fandom. And finally, Painting Portraits by Link015. This is a lovely oneshot about a much-forgotten Sacred Stones pairing, Forde/Eirika.

Firefly
  • Fast Eddie: "My Own Kind of Freedom" is a Firefly 'fic by troper and published author Steven Brust. Original Flavor.
  • Tabby: I barely tolerate Firefly, but I cannot recommend Dyce's "Horseshoe Nails" series enough. As the title suggests it's about one small change that changes everything, leading to plot twists and character growth that are unexpected but made completely plausible. Dyce manages to capture the distinct voice of each character in turn, both in dialogue and in prose. Gradually develops into River/Jayne. The last story in the series is as-yet unfinished.
    • Much Good Little Time: This troper was very pleasantly surprised by how well the River/Jayne pairing developed, while still keeping the essential personalities very much canon based. Two bad things: one, that Firefly was canceled, and two, that Dyce was never a writer on the show.
  • Ryan Lohner: Still Flying: simply put, a continuation of the series based entirely on Joss Whedon's vision. The series is continued in script form and the occasional illustration past the point the actual show left off, with the remainder of season one and the first half of season two building to the film Serenity, and the second half of season two being the events of that film spread out over eleven hours instead of just two. Naturally, this allows for far greater depth and nuances than Whedon himself was able to do.
  • Extraintrovert: A Life Less Extraordinary (or, alternatively, The Man With No Name) is a crossover with Doctor Who that, aside from effectively capturing all of the characters perfectly, is replete with wonderful interactions between the Doctor and Serenity's crew, in particular Mal and River, surrounded by a tense and portentous plot.
  • Roach Patrol: Like Describing The Alphabet, by Mosca. Graphic NC-17 Mal/Jayne, with a side of Inara/Kaylee slash and a couple other pairings thrown in-- but the story is much more than one big gay orgy. It's about the things the crew has to do to stay alive, afloat, and together, and the way they all love each other, and the ways that people who love each other can hurt each other.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Futurama

Galaxy Angel
  • Kchasm: Tsutomu Teruko writes some pretty good stuff, and there's not much I can add onto that. Except for maybe something about her various Galaxy Angel fics. Her well-written Galaxy Angel fics. Mostly game-verse, with some AU.

Gargoyles
  • kchishol: The Gargoyles Saga, an organized Virtual Season fan continuation of the franchise that not only includes the main series, but also delves into the various Spin Off series Greg Weisman wanted to produce as well.
  • Mark Lungo: In Constance Cochran's outstanding More Things in Heaven and Earth, the Gargoyles meet The Real Ghostbusters when both groups are threatened by the spirit of Hakon, the evil Viking. While several fanfics have crossed over these two particular series, Cochran's story is easily the best of the lot. Everyone's in character, every member of the large cast gets a moment in the limelight, and most of the minor changes Cochran makes to the existing series are actually improvements, particularly making Janine a full-time Ghostbuster. If only all Crossover fics could be this good...

Good Omens
  • Solandra: This actually isn't the first GO rec I've put down here, but seeing that it's conspiciously absent from all the GO rec lists I've seen, it deserves special recognition here: Quantum Witch wrote a novel-length GO sequelfic named Bad Grace, and it's one thrilling ride to the end. Like the best fanfic writers, Quantum Witch takes the canon material into fascinatingly creative directions while remaining lovingly faithful to the canon characters and relationships. The introductions of the Seven Deadly Sins are great fun to read. As is watching the Antichrist enter puberty. And Crowley's continual False Starts regarding Aziraphale. And Newt trying not to faint from impeding fatherhood. And when the introductions and set-ups are done and the plot really begins moving, it's a joy to see how all these disparate elements come together in the end as a whole to give a satisfying payoff. It truly reads as a sequel to the original book. (Okay, except maybe for the Aziraphale/Crowley slash, and that's probably not too far from canon. Don't let that deter you; it's just one story thread woven into the tapestry that is this fanfic.)
    • L Guardinal: (Most of) Quantum Witch's other works are quite good as well (though the vast majority, if not all of them, are Crowley/Aziraphale, sometimes quite explict, so read at your own risk). They can be found at The Good Omens Library.
  • Solandra: Anything written by Daegaer (a list of all her GO works can be found here), but Going Home in particular. Most of her works focus on Aziraphale and Crowley, and Going Home shows just how well she gets their relationship down pat with the right doses of character quirkiness, trademark snarkiness, and sweetness. She's also frighteningly talented at pulling off even the most crack-headed ideas. (For those of you who don't like slash, rest assured that Going Home and nearly all of Daegaer's other works don't make Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship any more suggestive than their canon one was, unless you really want to make an effort.}
  • Solandra: Giddy Geek's A Precise and Accurate History of Monday, Eleven Years Later does a fantastic job of capturing Pratchett and Gaiman's style. Crowley and Aziraphale are as entertaining as ever, Adam and the rest of Them have much-welcomed cameos, plenty of lines are giggle-inducing, and the progression of the main relationship over these years is believable and gives you a case of the warm fuzzies, especially at the closing lines. All without being sappy or losing that original-flavored witty edge. (Forewarning: while nothing's really shown, it's clear that Aziraphale and Crowley have gotten to know one another in the Biblical sense.)
  • Solandra: This fandom has a surprising number of really good Aziraphale/Crowley fics, and Irisbleufic's Survivors' Guilt is another of them. Focusing on the long-term effects that significant historical events have on the two, the story may not be as original-flavored as other fics like Eleven Years Later, but it's got a smooth, almost lyrical feel to it that captures the characters' raw emotions and developments without having to say them out loud. The only real implication of slash comes at the end and is easy to miss. Even the sequel For All the World, which focuses more explicitly on Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship (slash dislikers beware), has that same emotional depth infused into it that makes even the sexual references seem somehow clean and in-character instead of giving off that "dirty" vibe.
  • Solandra: Googlebrat's Of Wishes and Fishes is a tale of fish, wishing rings, restless Horsepersons, and an angel and demon on vacation. Wonderfully quirky and charming, and guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face.
  • Solandra: Xylodemon's Once More With Feeling details the second coming of the Apocalypse so perfectly in-tune with the canon style and characters that it feels like you're meeting and becoming enthralled with the original characters all over again. Characters from Harry Potter also make appearances, though it's not so much a proper crossover as it's an Original Flavor GO fic with the Harry Potter cast as extras. (Implied slash, but it's non-explicit and only a small part of the overreaching plot.)
  • Solandra: And now for something completely different: Pepper/War. Yes, femmeslash between a human and a Horseman Horseperson Biker of the Apocalypse. But Afrai makes this Crack Pairing work beautifully in Sparks, showing how the two redheads' personalities attract and play off on each other, and how humanity might just be affecting War as it did to a certain angel and demon.
  • Solandra: To say that H.J. Bender's GO fanfics are funny is like saying that the original book has a slightly lighter approach to the Apocalypse. Even her shamelessly smutty fics are far more hilarious than PWPs have any right to be. As a bonus, Quantum Witch has illustrated some of Bender's fics for even more comedic goodness. (While humor is the main staple of Bender's works, even the technically gen ones are packed with
