    General Fics
Stories which primarily focus on the normal goings on of the cast.

Pick A Side by arealsword

  • Recommended by: Neelh
  • Status: Incomplete; oneshot collection.
  • Synopsis: Thomas and the Sides coexist in their own slightly dysfunctional way. There’s no pre-existing guidebook to follow when it comes to living and interacting with quirky extensions of your own personality, after all.
  • Pairing(s): Gen
  • Comments: This fic is an excellent look into how Thomas and his sides exist in day-to-day life. Highlights include Thomas being (unsurprisingly) good at imitating his other sides, Remus being helpful, for once, and platonic cuddling.

Self Love by parallelmonsoon

  • Recommended by: Karalora
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After "Putting Others First," Thomas makes an effort to bond with each of his Sides individually. Roman and Janus prove to be challenging.
  • Pairing(s): Gen (alternately—a platonic pairing between Thomas and each Side)
  • Comments: This fic is amazingly touching. As the title suggests, it's basically character!Thomas learning how to love himself, and be good to himself, to a truly enviable extent.

Starved by RandomSlasher

  • Recommended by: EnochianMoloch
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Virgil is touch-starved, but there are ways to cope. Until there aren’t anymore and he steals the others’ clothes to make a hug doll. Things go downhill from there. Lots of angst (and tears, hugging, and feelings) ensues.
  • Tags: Hurt/Comfort Fic
  • Comments: The execution on this fanfic is absolutely perfect. RandomSlasher has such a way with words, with amazing attention to detail; masterful usage of angst, fluff, and just a slight sprinkling of humor; and such vivid descriptions of Virgil’s thoughts. Every fic of hers is amazing, but this one takes the cake. It’s a brilliant hurt/comfort that’ll punch you in the face with angst, then punch you in the face again with fluff. Each and every one of the seven chapters is amazingly written, up to and including the epilogue with Thomas, something you don’t know you needed until it’s there. It’s one of the most heart-wrenching, tear-jerking hurt/comfort fanfics you’ll read, with great characterization. Sure, the plot is quick to describe, but the writing is what makes this fic so popular—it’s definitely one to bookmark. If you enjoy Virgil angst (or just angst in general), you can’t get better than this fic right here. It’s enough to make a hug-hater yearn for a good cuddle.

Deceit's Whiskey and the Wedding Conundrum by soupstarsandsilence

  • Recommended by: Andariel
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: A what-if of "Selfishness v. Selflessness" episode, wherein Thomas gets so tired of his core Sides arguing wedding vs. callback with no end in sight, he summons Deceit to ask his advice.
  • Pairing(s): Gen

These Unprecedented Times by Fangirlwriting

  • Recommended by: Andariel
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: AU where Janus is the first Side Thomas meets because his self-care habits are so terrible that the embodiment of his self-preservation can't let him continue on like this.
  • Pairing(s): Gen

fall into a hole you couldn't see (the friends on the inside remix) by arealsword

  • Recommended by: Andariel
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: Inception AU. Some not-so-nice people attempt to hack into Thomas' mind. His Sides aren't happy about it.
  • Pairing(s): Gen

    Alternate Reality Fics

Stories that focus on the characters in an alternate universe, primarily Human!Sides A Us in the Sanders Sides case

WELL WE ALL THINK YOU'VE PICKED A GRAND SIDE by arealsword
  • Reccomended by: EXPLOSIVEREDBRADY 32
  • Status: Completed
  • Synopsis: But there are no sides. Or: It’s April 14th. There goes Janus to be buried alive.

  • Comments: While anything by arealsword is amazing, this takes the cake. Based on the ancient greek play Antigone - no prior knowledge needed - but there is no simple way to explain this story. It has an excellent exploration of the insecurities and issues of every single character, but also how all their character flaws clash in the worst way to bring out the worst possible outcome, the outcome you've been informed of from the start but can do nothing to prevent happening. The surreal yet horrifying plot, the corpse onstage for the entire play, the beautiful wordplay and imagery... makes this fanplay worth reading. Probably the best part is that the author utterly nails the characterisation, especially of Remus - rather than reducing him to a 2D crude personality that makes unoriginal sex jokes, he lives up to his namesake of creativity and comes up with monologues that are simultanously disgusting, hilarious, AND existential crisis inducing - acting as comedy and exposition, but also making the audience think on a deeper, darker level about the events that are occurring.

Powerless by (patentpending)

  • Recommended by: tobedetermined
  • Status: Completed
  • Synopsis: " “People like us,” Logan had once remarked to Virgil. “Are statistical anomalies.”

(Almost) Everyone in the world has powers. As for those who don’t, well, they’re such a small part of the population - only 0.04% - why would anyone care about them?

Ever since he realized what people mean when they call him Powerless, Virgil Sanders has tried to fight back against the system that oppresses people like him, Patton, and Logan. When Patton’s bakery is targeted in a hate crime, he finally snaps. With the help of a mysterious sponsor, Virgil becomes a villain, ready to remake a broken society. The only thing standing in his way is the world’s most Powerful (and infuriatingly charming) superhero: The Prince, who is hiding the fact that his gilded life isn’t as perfect as it may seem.

  • Pairing(s): Virgil Sanders/Roman Sanders, Patton Sanders/ Logan Sanders
  • Comments: An amazing romance that criticizes society by developing a world where those without superpowers are discriminated against. Beautiful prose, an interesting plot, and jaw-dropping plot twists make it the best Sanders Sides fic out there. Such an important story and such a good message.

A Lesson in Practicality by (ResidentAnchor)

  • Recommended by: Shine 101
  • Status: Completed
  • Synopsis: "Four seemingly random strangers all answer an ad to move into an apartment in downtown. It didn't take more than a few months before they all realize they've been hiding a secret from one another... they each have a special ability. Now they're just trying to live their lives day by day as they figure their powers, and each other, out."
  • Pairings: Logicality, Prinxiety
  • Comments: A brilliant alternate reality fic based around the sides with superpowers. While the fic is derived from the webseries The Platoon of Power Squadron, watching it isn't necessary. The fic, for the first few chapters, focuses on the daily life of the sides as they live their lives before developing a more in-depth story much like the series it's inspired by. This fic is also a part of a series with a currently on-going sequel, Probable Theorem

Chemically Imbalanced by NyxWordsmith

  • Recommended by Shine 101
  • Status: Dormant; last updated February 2020
  • Synopsis: Roman’s first mistake was taking Mr. Sanders History class, expecting an easy ride. His second mistake? Hitting on his son.
  • Pairings: Prinxiety, Logicality
  • Comments: This fic is rather heartbreaking, the focus being put on Virgil, Roman and how their new relationship becomes a struggle because of Roman's last relationship and what that ex, in particular, is doing to him which is something I won't state as to not spoil anything. The characterisation is wonderful with both Virgil and Roman supporting each other throughout their relationship as they both experience problems. The fic also features Logan and Patton as Virgil's parents who, at the time of writing, are getting their own supposed side-story, Joan and Talyn who act as Roman and Virgil's close friends and who attempt to help the two out with problems the two are experiencing and Remy who's Virgil's cousin in this fic and who also tries his best to support Virgil and Roman with their relationship

Sanders Supers by PsychedelicShips and Mrs. Horrorshow

  • Recommended by: Emmawesome 126
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Roman, Logan, Patton, and Virgil are superheroes, protecting the world from villains, like The Duke and Deceit. The heroes have always beaten their enemies, but what happens when the Dark Sides team up? To stop them from wreaking havoc on the Earth, the government needs to form a team to combat them, and the superhero recruitment effort falls on a high ranking government official by the name of Thomas Sanders.
  • Pairing(s): Roman/Virgil (Prinxiety), Logan/Patton (Logicality), implied Remus/Deceit (Dukeceit)

Love and Other Fairytales by So Do Roses (Fairy Chess)
  • Recommended by: Neelh
  • Status: Complete, with an ongoing series of extra short stories.
  • Synopsis: An AU based loosely on The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black.
  • Pairing(s): LAMP (Logan/Virgil/Patton/Roman); abusive Deceit/Roman; background Emilie/Remy (Sleep) and canonical relationships from Cartoon Therapy.
  • Comments: Violet is a truly skilled author. Lu takes the vague plot of The Darkest Part of the Forest, the folklore that lu's grown up with, and the canonical plot of Sanders Sides, and creates a heartwrenching work.

    Shipping Fics
Stories focused primarily on the romantic relationship between the four different sides

chivalry is dead by Uncrowned King

  • Recommended by: Neelh
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Roman tries to imagine what it'd be like if he were what the others wanted — chivalrous, honorable, selfless. Tries to imagine what it'd be like for the others to approve of him. Love him. But, for him to achieve this, he'd have to cast himself a different role, and the Imagination answers each of Romans' calls. Patton, Logan, Virgil, and Deceit would disagree. After Deceit sees him fall, the others must find a way to convince Roman that they want no one more than who he is and always has been: their Prince.
  • Pairing(s): DLAMP (Deceit/Logan/Virgil/Patton/Roman)
  • Comments: The author has a masterpost of content for this story, wherein Roman finds himself despondent enough to split into seven versions of himself in order to create a better Creativity.
