Do warn when a fanfic may head into non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Authors and Websites

Harukami's fics
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Harukami has written about various different topics, both shipping and gen, and the characterization is always perfect. Most of them are pretty old, but they are all definitely worth a look.

Lynn's fanfics
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • The author likes to focus on Killua in her stories, but Kurapika and Hisoka make some appearances too.

Olivemeister's fics
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • The content is split mostly between heartbreaking tragedy and really hot porn. There is no in-between. The collection of vignettes that take place in the Harry Potter Universe are especially worth a look. Olive mostly focuses on the relationship between Gon and Killua, but the Kurapika/Leorio pairing has made a few appearances recently as well.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Autumn's Children by November First
  • Recommended by rallipretac
  • Synopsis: The dead don't forgive what the living can't forget. Haunted by vengeful souls and secrets, Kurapika will do anything to lay them to rest. Even die. Even live. (AU-ish York Shin.)
  • Comments: One of the only, only femKurapika fics where Kurapika remains stunningly in character despite a gender change.
  • Tropes Page here.

Epistle by Shadowling
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Pairings: hints of Gon/Killua
  • Synopsis: It's been five years since Gon and Killua parted and Killua began traveling with Alluka, but thoughts of his friends still linger in his everyday life. When the siblings return to the Republic of Padokia to celebrate an old holiday, Killua finds himself reflecting on his old relationship with Gon and what he wants out of life now.
  • Comments: One of the most perfect character-study pieces about Killua, hands down. The mythology behind the titular "Epistle" holiday is fascinating on its own as well.

Free Samples by windlily
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Synopsis: Killua and Alluka discuss Gon over a free samples display. Post-Chapter 339 spoliers.
  • Comments: A short lovely story that examines Killua's relationships with Gon and Alluka.

The Shape of His Devotion by lucathia
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Synopsis: Killua runs. For Gon's sake. (Set after the Chimera Ant arc. Warning for Character Death.)
  • Comments: This fic incorporates some canon from the arc that follows the Chimera Ant arc, but as that arc was still ongoing at the time, this fic is now an Alternate Universe. Spoilers for Alluka and Alluka's abilities. Very sad.

Sleeping Beauty, or the Unconscious Man on the Bed by lucathia
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Synopsis: This had become a daily routine for the silver-haired boy, as essential as eating and sleeping. The man on the bed never responded, but the silver-haired boy had grown used to having a silent and unresponsive audience.
  • Comments: A fic that deals with the aftermath of chapter 307. Sad, but has an uplifting ending.

nine snapshots of kurapika and leorio post york shin city by princess kally
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Synopsis: Leorio watches as Kurapika spirals downwards and wonders, 'how do you help someone who doesn't want to be helped' slight spoilers for election arc. pre-slash.
  • Comments: The characterization of both Leorio and Kurapika is pitch perfect. Leorio's efforts to stay connected to Kurapika despite his attempts to isolate himself are heart-wrenching to watch.

Say it first (someone has to) by factorielle
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Pairings: hints of Gon/Killua and Palm/Killua
  • Synopsis: It's nobody's fault that they lost touch, but there's still plenty of blame to go around. (In which Killua is a terrible role model, Gon hasn't changed a bit except for where he has, and fights to the death are the solution to everything.)
  • Comments: For those who were unhappy with the events of chapter 338 of the manga, this story is the perfect feel-good fic. Spoilers for the last few chapters of the manga, of course.

An Old Song by Murder M4chine
  • Recommended by rtr5
  • Synopsis:The Hunter's Association is the last of the free mercenary wizard companies, struggling to keep its name afloat in peaceful times. Killua is a freelance assassin who has just been hired to kill their captain. Fantasy/Magic AU.
  • Comments: The story takes place in an AU where nen is replaced by magic, and all the characters use aliases to hide their true names. It's only a few chapters in but it looks promising.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

The Lost Night by LyraKlaude
  • Recommended by Indalecio
  • Pairings: Killua/OC
  • Synopsis: A hunter named Yuki and Killua fall in love. Unfortunately, Killua had killed her family during his previous life as an assassin, though she doesn't realize that for a while.
  • Comments: Quite well done. The characters are sharply defined, and the romance proceeds smoothly, if a bit rushed. Killua seems slightly off, though there's not any one point that I could point to. Nen seems a bit downplayed, and there are at least a few plot turns where it could've been used to solve or prevent problems but isn't.

Domestic Divergence by Chyme
  • Recommended by Cardamomlace2
  • Pairings: Komugi/Meruem
  • Synopsis: In another world, Komugi and Meruem live a little longer. But just a little.
  • Comments: Quiet what-if fic about what might have happened if the Rose Bomb wasn't as lethal as it was in canon. Great exploration of how Komugi perceives her world.

Domesticity Arc by Mina Lightstar
  • Recommended by bluetwinkletoes19
  • Pairings: Mainly Leorio/Kurapika, Gon/Killua in the background
  • Synopsis: A series of short stories about Leorio and Kurapika living together supposedly after the series. Hilarity ensues.
  • Comments: Kurapika's sarcasm is well written, and both Leorio and Kurapika act in character, and their bickering can be quite amusing to read, especially when it's over the color of their office.

Fortune X Freedom X Fate by ColorlessButterfly
  • Recommended by LiahFaile
  • Pairings: Hisoka/OC
  • Synopsis: Please understand; she was just an ignorant coward who was too scared of living to die properly. He was just a psychopath who became interested in her ability to see what he had hidden for so long. After all, his hands are swathed in murderous black strings, while hers are starkly bare - so tell me, what kind of bloodied threads will connect them together? Hisoka X OC. Pre-Canon.
  • Comments: This piece turned out to be so interesting and engaging, and even though it's not finished yet, the author captures the spirit of the city around the Heaven's Arena and the darkness behind Hisoka's character so well. I got chills when I read this! If you've ever wanted Hisoka to be pulled into this destructive, taunting romance, then this is a must read.

1001 Nights by Runandra
  • Recommended by phantomdare1
  • Pairings: Kuroro/Kurapika, Shalnark/OC
  • Synopsis: Kurapika had a question. Should he feel unfortunate, for losing the only Scarlet Eyes that he thought he had retrieved, and knowing that Kuroro Lucifer; his nemesis, had finally broken free from his Chain of Judgement? Or should he feel fortunate that he actually bumped into him in his task to retrieve some ancient relic? One thing for sure: the appearance of a genie definitely spelled D-O-O-M.
  • Comments: Plays well on the differences between Kuroro and Kurapika, and gradually develops Kurapika's character into finally forgiving the vendetta against the Spiders and finally accepting that revenge isn't the best way to go.

The Joker and the Queen by Shad Mimir
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj, rtr5
  • Pairings: Hisoka/Illumi
  • Synopsis: lllumi accepts a job from Hisoka against his better judgment. When "a date" proves to really be, "just a date", both his patience and his deductive skills are tested.
  • Comments: This fic has the absolute best characterization of Illumi and Hisoka in a pairing fic that I have ever seen. No contest.

The Joker and The Ace by Shad Mimir
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj, rtr5
  • Pairings: Hisoka/Illumi (Warning for non-explicit dub-con/drugged sex in the second half)
  • Synopsis: Sequel to The Joker and The Queen - Hisoka takes it upon himself to sabotage Illumi's work. The only scenario more annoying would be Illumi actually requiring the help of his saboteur... Letting the poison just kill him would be significantly easier.

Limits by Silver Thunder
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Pairings: Gon/Killua, hints of Leorio/Kurapika
  • Synopsis: Sometimes there isn't as much time as you'd think... and sometimes there is.
  • Comments: An adorable fic in which Killua worries over his growing feelings for Gon, and Leorio gives him some good advice. (written pre-Chimera Ant arc)

A Need to Know Basis by Silver Thunder
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Pairings: Gon/Killua
  • Synopsis: When it comes to Killua, Gon has a right to know these things.
  • Comments: This fic probably has the best characterization Iíve ever read of Gon yet. A lot of times people write Gon like this innocent little thing that needs gentle, loving care, when in fact, Gon is difficult as hell to deal with and his curiosity and lack of shame knows no bounds.

Eat Me Haunt Me by glitch and gremlin
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Pairings: Gon/Killua
  • Synopsis: Gon and Killua have a significant discussion about cannibalism and metaphysical wonders.
  • Comments: Both heartwarming and slightly disturbing, this fic captures the spirit of the series as well as the dynamics between Gon and Killua perfectly.

The Predatory Wasp by silvercistern
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Pairings: Gon/Killua
  • Synopsis: Five years without any contact was a long time. The distance had built new walls on top of old wounds. They were still best friends, maybe, but did they really know each other anymore? In an ideal situation, they'd spend some time alone, maybe go on a few small adventures. Take it slow. Rediscover what drew them to each other in the first place. But Killua had officially decided that the situation was not ideal. In fact, it was so much the opposite that he was going to have an enormous hickey on the inside of his elbow. Because instead of taking things slow, they were pretending to make out in a closet.
  • Comments: This story is an amazing example of the "fake relationship" fanfic troupe, and it utilizes it's premise to the fullest. The author shows a great understanding of both Gon's and Killua's characters, portraying both the fundamental aspects of their personalities along with little nuanced details that truly enhance the reading experience. Plus, the story includes some great Original Characters that fit right into the universe and move the story along perfectly.

Mithridatism by Olivemeister
  • Recommended by lettergirlmj
  • Pairings: Gon/Killua
  • Warnings: WIP, Cannibalism, Blood and Gore, Character Death, Vomiting, Intense Violence, Nightmares (tags may be updated)
  • Synopsis: Tokyo Ghoul AU featuring the Hx H cast. There were people who didn't belong in the world of ghouls. People who should have been kept as far away from that horrific universe as possible. They weren't.
  • Comments: Wow. The level of thought and detail put into this fic is absolutely amazing. The characterization is great, the plot is enticingly suspenseful, and the twists are fantastic. However, the story also contains a large amount of fairly disturbing content, so mind the warnings on this one. If you can handle it, this fic is a definite must for Hunter x Hunter fans.
