  • Comments: Major angst warning.
    • Probably my favorite LoVe writer. Basically all her stuff is R/NC 17, so be warned.

Anything by youcallitwinter

  • Recommended by major-kumquat
  • Comments: copious amount of angst, dysfunctional relationships.

Anything by cheshirecatstrut

  • Recommended by VanessaTaleweaver
  • Comments: Nearly all LoVe fics, all excellent, with lots of interesting looks at other characters as well.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Life in Slow Motion by Angel Munroe

  • Recommended by bettername2come
  • Status: Complete
  • Author Synopsis: What if there were bullets in the gun. A chapter piece exploring a 'what if' of Lucky's homicidal turn. LoVe pairing, but includes many characters. Spoilers 2.21 and 2.22 in later chapters.
  • Comments: An action-packed story that goes AU at the beginning of 2x21. Lucky really does shoot Wallace, and Veronica allows herself to be taken hostage to prevent Wallace from being shot a second time. The other characters work to track down Veronica, and in the process uncover the truth about the bus crash.

The Year of Living Dangerously by Vanessa Galore

  • Recommended by Sarah1017, zmdr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After the conclusion of season 3, Veronica is accused of murder, and Logan is back in her life.
  • Comments: Almost listed this one under "Shipping Fics" (it's heavily Logan/Veronica), but that wouldn't do justice to the brilliance of the plot. An equally good (or better, but definitely longer) sequel is complete.
    • The first one is very very good but has a couple flaws. The second one starts out that way and then moves into complete perfection. I would have put it under shipping if only because it is kind of filthy, but I definitely see why it was put here because the plotting and storytelling (especially toward the second half of the second fic) are fantastic. Bucketloads of angst.

Precipitation by Vanessa Galore

  • Recommended by zmdr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Sometimes it's best to just get the hell out of Dodge. Set right after 'The Bitch Is Back'. Veronica, Keith and Logan run away from Neptune after the events of 3.20.
  • Comments: Excellent and engaging story. Many of Vanessa Galore's fics are page turners, and are pretty long and engrossing. This is no exception.
    • While I think that she wrote herself into a corner here, I LOVED this for the characterization and relationships between the cast, as well as some fantastic scenes.

There and Back Again by Gwenhwyfar Rose

  • Recommended by Sarah1281
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis" On the second anniversary of Aaron Echoll's death, Veronica and Logan decide to finally set their issues to rest, at the Echolls cabin, with six of their nearest and dearest friends.
  • Comments: This story takes the rather cliche situation of Duncan returning to the country and having him, his daughter, Veronica, Logan, Parker, Piz, Mac, and Dick staying at a cabin and makes it work. As Duncan's been gone awhile, Wallace and Mac don't know much before the series started, and Parker and Piz are pretty much clueless, there's a lot of reminiscing and it is hilarious. Yes, Veronica and Logan do hook up in it, but that's not really what it's about and the friendships here are great.

Gimme Sympathy by coup in the zoo

  • Recommended by emmaliza
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Are you just showing up to be belligerent or what?" Madison Sinclair has dreams about everyone's favorite mass-murdering rapist. She's not a fan.
  • Comments: An interesting, unique fic that both very funny to read and very complex. Tapping into Madison Sinclair's mind, of all characters, was a great concept.

Death Becomes Him by Mediancat

  • Recommended by Scifantasy.
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Aaron Echolls died, killed at his Christmas party by a jealous ex-lover. What happened next?
  • "Pairings": Veronica/Logan
  • Comments: Scifantasy: Yes, this is the same Mediancat above listed for "Martian Manhunter." As far as I can tell, this was his first foray into long-form (and I do mean long—66 chapters, more than 100,000 words—but it's worth it) Veronica Mars storytelling. The use of a Butterfly of Doom is well executed; one slight difference, here a security guard who keeps Keith from getting to Aaron in time to save him in "An Echolls Family Christmas," and everything changes. As with "Manhunter," Mediancat takes the same facts of the episodes and spins them out, asking how the characters who have been changed would react. Highly recommended, also complete.

"The Answer" by Mediancat

  • Recommended by thatguythatugy.
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: AU. Who killed Lilly Kane? The answer is not what you'd expect.
  • Comments: Three words: Evil Veronica Mars. Does a great job at getting into the mind of a very not-nice person. Also, complete.

"House of Cards" by Emma CS Me

  • Recommended by peppermintflame
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Dick spent a lot of time living in a glass dome. He couldn't tell you exactly how much.
  • Comments: A pretty good character study of what goes on in Dick Casablancas mind, and how much he avoids thinking about all the things he could have stopped, or done something about.

"The Applicant" by Emma CS Me.

  • Recommended by peppermintflame
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: He imagined hell to look... a little less like speed dating. Cassidy dreams of all the people he's killed.
  • Comments: You very nearly feel sorry for Cassidy having to go through this, which in my mind, is somewhat of an achievement.

"Molasses and Taffy" by wily_one24

  • Recommended by bettername2come
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An AU/missing scenes of what happened in the week between the rooftop in "Not Pictured" and Veronica leaving for New York a week later.
  • Comments: Angsty, beautifully written fic. Great insight into Veronica's head and good use of the supporting cast.

Veronica Mars, Where are you? by cheshirecatstrut

  • Recommended by Vanessa Taleweaver
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: VM/Scooby-Doo mash-up. Veronica, Logan, Wallace and Mac investigate the haunting of the Neptune Grand by Aaron Echolls' ghost.
  • Comments: established LoVe, but it's minor compared to the hysterically funny plot that could have been ripped right out of the classic Scooby-Doo cartoon.

Never Con a Con by cheshirecatstrut

  • Recommended by Vanessa Taleweaver
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Van Clemmons has a problem, that wears a fake moustache and a Members Only jacket, and sees blackmail as the first resort. Only Veronica Mars can save him from the horrors of... Vinnie Van Lowe.
  • Comments: Set between 1x18 Weapons of Class Destruction and 1x19 Hot Dogs, it might possibly detail how Veronica and Logan went from that hit-and-run kiss to agreeing to their initial secret relationship. Not in the Shipping Fics, however, because 85% of this is pure casefic shenanigans - as you might expect of a fic that starts off with Van Clemmons and Vinnie Van Lowe. Stuffed full of callbacks and even some veiled Call Forwards.

Pan's Revenge by Byrose A and Silver Lining 2 K 6

  • Recommended by Vanessa Taleweaver
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: What exactly was Logan doing during 1x16, Betty and Veronica? And is that a goat?
  • Comments: A straight forward, but hysterically funny, one-shot detailing Logan's face-off with the Pan High Mascot... and Logan loses badly.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

A Life Extraordinary by MLP.

  • Recommended by peppermintflame
  • Synopsis: Sick of the angst? Want some happy ever after? Let's have some fun, fun, fun.
  • Status: Dormant
  • Pairings: Veronica/Logan
  • Comments: Although everyone seems to be in love with Logan Echolls, it's definitely worth a read. We even get to see some side characters blossom, as well as be introduced to some wonderful original characters. Currently on chapter 15 and counting, but updating pretty regularly.

"Knowing the Difference" by steenbeans

  • Recommended by 2shy
  • Status: Complete
  • "Synopsis": The plot is mainly character driven and is told from various, but, as the author says, the heart of story is Veronica Logan.
  • "Pairings": Veronica/Piz, Veronica/Logan
  • "Comments": The story is well-written, has nice long chapters, and she updates regularly. The characterizations are spot on and individually and overall, the quality is great.

"A Strange New Story Every Time" by gyzym

  • Recommended by limiculous
  • Status: Complete
  • "Synopsis": Ten years clean of Neptune living, Logan's past finds him in an all-night grocery store.
  • "Pairings": Veronica/Logan
  • "Comments": A fantastic look at how Veronica and Logan might interact as more mature adults. Great Logan voice. We also get little glimpses of what happened to the rest of the cast. I really can't recommend this story enough.

    • Truths Too Big to be Told: Complete
    • Playing Hide and Seek With the Truth: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Jumping off point: V gets Duncan's journal in Echolls' Family Xmas. AU from there but many canon events happen too. All characters in the VM-verse make an appearance, but it is a LoVe story. In script format-but give it a try, it's well written.
  • Pairings: Veronica/Logan, other pairings
  • Comments: Keeps everyone in character, has creative and original plot lines that fit into VM-verse, fixes plot points in show that bother me like everything with Duncan.

A Trip to the Dentist - The Extended Scripts by skk670

  • Synopsis: A series of script-style mysteries that gradually spoil the reveals in "A Trip to the Dentist"
  • Pairings: Veronica/Logan

Five ways it could have gone and didn’t (and one way it did) by redtoes

  • Recommended by Sarcasticgirl 777

  • Synopsis: Five Logan/Veronica moments where everything could have gone right but didn’t, and one moment where it did.
  • Pairings: Veronica/Logan

The Phenomenal Pixie, #1 by TheLastGoodGoldfish

  • Recommended by Hannah Sto Helit
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Veronica is a superhero and Logan is very nearly her Lois Lane.
  • Comments: I recommend absolutely anything by The Last Good Goldfish but this is fantastic. The premise seems like pure crack but somehow it isn't. It's clever and funny and emotional and altogether beautiful and so much fun to read.
  • Pairings: Veronica/Logan

The Washing Machine Story by TheLastGoodGoldfish

  • Recommended by Hannah Sto Helit
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: To quote the author, "domesticity porn." In the absolute best possible way. Veronica and Logan are living real life, tell embarrassing stories about each other, solve crimes, and are generally adorable.
  • Comments: I meant to just recommend The Phenomenal Pixie above but then I remembered this one and needed a separate recommendation for it. Hilarious, sweet, fluffy without being tooth-rotting, witty, and so so much fun.
  • Pairings: Veronica/Logan

Guantanamera by cheshirecatstrut and C Mackenzie

  • Recommended by Vanessa Taleweaver
  • Status: Complete
  • Synposis: In the 1950's, the American Mob partners with Cuba's President to create the world's first sovereign nation of crime. Cubans object, but Hollywood shows up in droves - a playground for the rich that eclipses Vegas. It's a perfect small pond for hard-boiled private eye, who makes a living saving those the law won't help. Plus life is high-stakes enough to entertain her thrill-seeking playboy husband.
  • Comments: a happily married, sickeningly in love and not afraid to admit it Logan and Veronica in the 1950s, tangling with the mob, high society and well, pretty much everyone. A wonderfully complicated plot featuring more cameos than you can count, all beautifully in character.
  • Pairings: Veronica/Logan; some others that aren't named here for spoilers or because it's a nice surprise.

Little Red by cheshirecatstrut

  • Recommended by Vanessa Taleweaver
  • Status: complete. There's a dormant sequel A Taste of Flesh (last updated July 2018)
  • Synopsis: once upon a time, a plucky college junior donned a red hoodie and butch boots, fired up her rusted-out Le Baron, and set out on a road trip to Palm Springs to visit her caustic Grandma Mars for Thanksgiving weekend. Along for the ride are: her vivacious heiress roommate, Lilly, whose constant gift-giving hides a secret agenda; Lilly's somehow-too-perfect, future-senator brother; and Lilly's surly celebutante ex, who sports a suspiciously toothy grin, and a whole sackful of (metaphorical) red apples.
  • Comments: this is as close as anyone can come to Veronica Mars meets The Hangover movies, with one wildly entertaining, outrageous episode after another, and lots of great guest appearances (Loretta Cancun is definitely a highlight). The original characters of Grandma Mars, and Veronica's aunt and uncle truly come across as the kind of family that could have produced Keith and Veronica. It's a wonderful look at might have happened if Meg had been the good-girl member of the Fab Four (with her canon ending) and Veronica came out of high school with only a fraction of the trauma - her kick-ass personality is the same, but most of her biggest issues, however, are gone, which makes it actually believable that she and Logan can build a forever kind of love in a single long weekend. Though you can truly sympathise with Logan taking out insurance before their first official date.
  • Pairings: Past Lilly/Logan, Past Duncan/Meg; however, it's all about the Logan/Veronica love story.

Postcode Envy by BewitchingRedhead36

  • Recommended by CrystalBlue
  • Status: Complete. Also available on ao3.
  • Synopsis: Mac is badly injured and as she fights to live, she finds herself back in time living life as Madison Sinclair. Would her life be better as Madison than Mac? AU/magical realism, similar set up to "Peggy Sue Got Married," an old 80's movie. VM version. Mac, Dick, Madison, Logan and Veronica. Eventual MaDi...Timeline skips around from 2009 to back to HS.
  • Comments: A beautifully written story, fleshing out Mac and her relationships to her family, and showing the possibilities if her life had been different and she had lived life as "Madison Sinclair." An well-developed AU that explores the ramifications of Mac's "baby switch" plotline in more detail, with all the pain and angst such a discovery would cause. Wonderfully touching story!
  • Pairings: Mac/Dick is the main pairing, but Logan/Veronica is there too, as the Beta Couple to Mac and Dick's growing relationship.

Crossover Fics
Alias Mars by Michael Weyer
  • Recommended by Marcus S Lazarus
  • Status: Complete
  • X-Over with: Alias
  • Synopsis: Veronica's investigation into the bus crash leads to a much bigger mystery with a new partner.
  • Comments: A superb mix of both series, including moments such as Veronica and Sydney contrasting just how badly their mothers screwed up their lives to both groups having to pool their resources to rescue Sydney and Veronica from Sark, on top of Jack Bristow delivering a brilliant "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Sheriff Lamb.

Martian Manhunter by Mediancat

  • Recommended by Luc, Scifantasy, Tobu, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "My name is Veronica Mars. High school student, girl detective, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. And I know everything that's going to happen for the next six years."
  • Comments: Luc: A Veronica Mars / Buffy the Vampire Slayer fusion that is almost indescribable due to the brilliant twists it takes.
    • Scifantasy: I'll give it a whirl. The one mental hurdle is that Veronica is a huge Buffy fan, and pretty much up on every controversy, fandom characterization, and plot hole. I had a bit of trouble with that, but once you get past it, the fic is brilliant—how the Veronica Mars characters integrate into Sunnydale, how the Buffy characters react to the Neptune imports, and how Veronica has to once again solve the mysteries of her rape and Lilly Kane's death, this time knowing the answer but needing to go through all the steps.
    • RookEncounte: Great fun. Approaches Gainax Ending, but avoids it successfully. The mysterious, Adversary, Veronica's bet and more provide a wonderful story that can entrance fans of either show. Also, re-reading it is incredibly meta, since you know what will happen to a character who knows what's going to happen. Read it. You will never see either 'verse the same way again.
