Proof that the remaining 10% is worth getting their brains for here:

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Psychonauts fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here. After a few samples, you will be able to judge whether you might be interested in the 'fic, based on who recommended it. No-name recommendations will be zapped. Nobody would back up the rec.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation In The Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

Do warn when a fanfic may head into sexually explicit or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Authors, and Websites

Sasha Nein's Blog

  • Recommended by Digitaldreamer
  • Synopsis: Supposed written by the legit Sasha Nein, and impressively so at that. Has a jaw-dropping amount of well-written fanon for the inner workings of the Psychonauts agency, information which this troper has always used for her personal headcanon. Canon characters are all written pitch-perfectly, and OCs are equally well done. Whether you consider this to be clever fanfiction or feel like playing along, this troper feels the blog is well worth the time of any Psychonaut fan looking for more. Try starting at post number one.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Curses! by Threepwillow

  • Recommended by Kendroid, Sar-Chasm, Mike Rosoft, Indalecio, Red-Dead-Redeemer
  • Status: Completed
  • Synopsis: "Fourteen-year-old Razputin Aquato is the only one his father can trust to break the curse on their family. Can he and Lili track down the last remaining Galochio before it's too late?" The story is set four years after the game. It has OCs, but they are believable. This is a very fun fic to read with mental worlds that seem like they could be in the game.

The Worst Summer Ever by volta_arovet

  • Recommended by Cass, Indalecio
  • Status: Complete
  • Also found here
  • Synopsis: "Between the stupid summer camp, the dorky campmates, and the crazy Russian counselor she suspected was trying to kill them all, Monica was sure that this was going to be the worst summer ever." Obviously OC-heavy, since it focuses on a new set of campers, but the author had the Psychonauts-weirdness down when it came to creating them. And Mikhail just sparkles, as do the other canon characters who have cameos as members of the camp staff.

Failure in Stone by Space Kase

  • Recommended by Blazichu
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Agent Ford Cruller knew he had limits. He just didn't think he'd reach them so soon..."
    • Ford muses on his own mental state, once in the 'past' (during the game) and once in the 'present' (years after the aforementioned game).

Cerebral Soldiers Rewrite by Atrophy Conception

  • Recommended by Thedoctorscompanion
  • Status: Ongoing.
  • Synopsis: Razputin Aquato, the youngest member of the Psychonauts, has gone missing; and his disappearance is accompanied by a slew of additional tragedies and unanswered questions that continue to plague those who were closest to him as they go unresolved for many years. A rewrite of the original Cerebral Soldiers, it takes place six years after the sequel. There are a good amount of OCs, but they're fairly well written. Old characters show up as either re-occurring in the story or as cameos. POV's switch from person-to-person, so that you get more of the story and don't get bored with just one person's thoughts. 7 good-sized chapters of the rewrite are available on Fanfiction.net so far.
  • Pairings: Raz/Lili later on.

Cursum Perficio by Digitaldreamer

  • Recommended by ladyofthelibrary
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A darkness is encroaching upon Whispering Rock. The shadow of a nightmare speaks of a looming tragedy. The pieces have been set. A game, a riddle, the answer lies hidden beneath the watery depths. Can Raz figure it out, or will the darkness swallow him?
  • Comments: While very dark, this story is well written and gives an interesting backstory to why exactly Raz's family is cursed and why his father tried to curb his psychic abilities. Well worth a read.
  • Pairings: Raz/Lili, one-sided Raz/Nereus Galochio
  • Triggers: Torture...lots and lots of torture...

Return To Thorney Towers by The Great Allie

  • Recommended by Indalecio
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Someone is targeting the former patients of Thorney Towers, but who and for what purpose? Sasha, Milla and Raz investigate.
  • Comments: There's a lot of world building, mostly going into former history of Thorney Towers asylum, and a lot of the story is told from Fred Bonaparte's perspective. Two OCs from the author's previous work(I'm assuming) show up, and if I'd had to gripe about anything, it would be about their presence. However, their role is minimal, and they've no impact on the story.

The Hurdles and Hazards of Hypnotherapy by lacrimalis

  • Recommended by BabyCharmander
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: If Sasha is to have any hope of uncovering the identity of Dr. Loboto's employer, he'll first need to do some serious decluttering in the man's chaotic subconscious. Meticulous as he is, Sasha can't help getting sidetracked by the mental reorganization process, and he soon finds himself fully absorbed in the task of putting Caligosto's mind to rights.
  • Comments: An in-depth look at Sasha and Loboto's possible interactions throughout 'Psychonauts 2', and the methods Sasha uses to obtain information from Loboto. The interactions are very in-character and feel like things we might have actually seen in the game.

Issue #15 by Freezair

  • Recommended by euan112358
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The last thing Raz needed after a hard day of Psychonauts training was for his favorite issue of True Psychic Tales to go missing. But he lives near the Motherlobe now, so he shouldn't have any trouble finding a replacement copy, right?
  • Comments: A cute post-game one-shot about Raz looking for one of his magazines with a... particular reputation, or at the very least, trying to find another copy that he can relax with. There's a lot of wink/nudge humour, and readers will be surprised at what's in it!

Later, Traitor by BurningFox6

  • Recommendd by Andyroid
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Raz had been the first choice to send to camp, but he hadn’t been the only choice. In a world where things hadn’t gone according to plan, a different Aquato finds themselves thrust into a new world of psychic awakening, strange circumstances, and burnt s’mores.
  • Comments: A canon divergence AU where Razputin's older sister Frazie ends up going to Camp Whispering Rock instead of him. Contains some fun interactions between Frazie and the other campers (who are rather younger than her), new mental worlds instead of a simple retread of the ones seen in the original Psychonauts, and some serious spoilers for Psychonauts 2.

Maligulo by venialian

  • Recommended by BabyCharmander
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Twenty-five years isn't long enough to forget a tragedy and five years isn't long enough to change any minds. Or, a small grammar lesson in Grulovian.
  • Comments: This covers something that very well may happen in Raz's future, given everything that happened in Psychonauts 2. Even if you figure out where the fic is going, that doesn't stop the gutpunch at the end.
  • Pairings: None

Medium by Shadow Wasserson

  • recommended by Kthecloud
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "A midnight lesson in Channeling restless spirits of the dead? What could possibly go wrong?"
  • Comments: A rather chilling tale about a psychic ability not covered in game.

Mission Impractical by The Genius Mage

  • Recommended by Mike Rosoft
  • Status: Completed
  • Synopsis: 7 years after the events of Psychonauts, Raz, Lili, Sasha and Milla are together on an important mission. "If someone told you that a prominent political figure was being targeted by a psychic assassin, would you believe him? It was nothing strange for seventeen-year-old Psychonauts Razputin and Lili."
  • Pairing(s): Raz/Lili

Of Blueprints and Braintanks by Jaywings

  • Recommended by BabyCharmander
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Spurned by his father, rejected by the army, and all but banished from the Psychonauts, dropped into a menial position as head coach of a summer camp training facility for psychic children. In Oleander's view, the world has turned its back on him. But he'll show them. He has a plan. Someday soon, the whole world will see just what Morceau Oleander can do, and he will watch it burn.
  • Comments: A prequel to the events of the first game, this fic covers Oleander planning his takeover and working with Doctor Loboto. Oleander's given a lot of depth here and the author does an excellent job maintaining the characters' voices and personalities.

Reunited by Viceroy Elf

  • Recommended by EvilerThanThou
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Raz and Lili are still going strong at fifteen years old, but long distance hasn't been easy. When a certain circus comes to town, Lili has an opportunity to give her boyfriend a stern talking to. Nonsensical fluff.
  • Comments: A cute little diddy about Raz introducing Lili to his family and showing off what they do at the circus.
  • Pairings: Raz/Lili

Star of the Show by Sandrc

  • Recommended by The Otaku Ninja
  • Status: Completed
  • Comments: An amazing fic that looks into Raz's mindscape after the second game, as he finally gets some long-overdue therapy. A very cathartic read with some interesting takes on how Raz views himself and other characters.

No Secrets in Wartime by BabyCharmander

  • Recommended by MissRoboto
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After the events of the first game, Sasha, Milla and Ford go into Coach Oleander's mind to perform a mental evaluation to see if he truly regrets everything he has done.
  • Comments: A good, solid story. If you thought the coach got off too lightly at the end of Psychonauts, this is at least worth reading. It's a great story about facing your mistakes and owning up to what you've done.

Raz's Regretful Realm by SneaselXRiolu

  • Recommended by Infinity League
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: With Raz's mind in rotation to be explored by his fellow Junior Agents, things spiral out of control, leading to most people Raz knows going into his mind. But things are not as peachy as Raz's surface demeanor leads on. With the groups splitting up for this exploration they find trauma and emotions that Raz himself isn't wanting to deal with.
  • Comments: Taking place shortly after the second game, this story is a thoughtful analysis of Raz's life as a psychic, his relationships with his family, mentors, and peers, and the toll his actions throughout the games have taken on his mental health. Nearly every character from the series (the Aquato family, the Psychic Six, the major Psychonauts, the Interns, and Raz's friends) gets a chance to shine at one point or another as they all delve into the boy's psyche. Thoughtful, detailed, and a roller coaster of emotions, RRR must-read for anyone with investment in the series and its characters.

Razputin Vodello AU by Devastat0r1775

  • Recommended by EvilerThanThou
  • Status: On-Hiatus
  • Synopsis: Milla and Sasha find a young, amnesiac Razputin in in the woods and adopts him as their son in the Motherlobe.
  • Now has its own page here.

Psychics Ruin Everything by BabyCharmander

  • Recommended by Arturo756
  • Status: Completed
  • Sypnosis: A few days after the whirlwind of events of Psychonauts 2, Razputin receives his first mission as a Junior Psychonaut: go into the mind of the recently-re-captured Caligosto Loboto and make sure he’s ready to be released... and if not, well... go from there. But it shouldn’t be that hard, right? Loboto’s all better now that his moral compass is back... isn’t he?
  • Comments: A story about what happened after the last we see of Dr. Loboto after escaping from containtment, only for him to still not leave the Motherlobe due to him being a "uncontrolled" dentist in the wild. It's leads us through new Mental Worlds related to his history and hatred with Psychics, as well we discover how going on missions are a far cry from what Raz used to read on the "True" Psychic Tales magazines. It's an interesting story that gives us a new light on how much was Loboto treated through the history and how much can now learn after Raz manage to "accidentally" bring out the Doctor from his traumas.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Love Works in Weird Ways by FluffleNeCharka (homosexual and heterosexual pairings, non-canon settings for chapters revolving around characters existing in different mind realms)

  • Recommended by Skullsmuggery
  • Status: Dead
  • Pairings: So many.
  • Synopsis: An anthology of romantic one-shots taken mostly from review requests, though some chapters enter platonic territory when it becomes unfeasible to match up certain characters in that way.

Make Out Room by Zero-A.C

  • Recommended by Paxjax
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Raz and Lili.
  • Synopsis: While searching for a quiet place in Milla's mind, Raz and Lili find themselves in an unusual place for making out. And although Milla thinks that this is not the right place for making out, the two young agents have to disagree.
  • Comments: The fanfic really nails the dynamic of the two. Takes place a year after the game. A cute, quick read.

Just a Little Higher by Ebony Lee

  • Recommended by KtheCloud
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Bobby and Chloe
  • Synopsis: "Bobby always saw himself as a winner, but an unexpected defeat challenges his view and his chance of getting the girl. Now he must somehow make up for his loss, or forever trudge through life loveless, or worse, with a grocery store girl."
  • Comments: A sweet, well written look into the head of Bobby and what he will do for the girl he likes.

Quality Time by Kataoi

  • Recommended by KtheCloud
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Sasha/Milla
  • Synopsis: "Contrary to what the campers and other agents joke about, Sasha Nein is not a robot. He merely lacks the social graces that come so easily to them and is frankly not very interested in such activities. Why does he have to talk to people anyway? It's not like much good can come from it."
  • Comments: Kataoi writes Sasha very IC, and it is beautifully believable. Actually, all of the fanfiction written by this author for Psychonauts is quite good, but this is the major work. I'm not actually sure whether this belongs in general or shipping actually because it is first and foremost a fic about Sasha, but the pairing is mentioned quite frequently.

Vulnerable by pantyslime

  • Recommended by Tropemaster849
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Raz and Lili
  • Synopsis: "This isn't the first time her exceptional trust spills into the bed with them, but Raz doesn't mind. He adores Lili; adores this time he can spend with her, where every shield she puts up during the day comes down and they're the only two people who exist. But Raz is still human, and a teenager."
  • Comments: In spite of this being a smut story, the author isn't just writing smut for smut's sake. Instead, it's a beautiful story detailing how Raz and Lili's relationship has grown.

Crossover Fics

Rational Minds by GuardianLioness

  • Crossover with: Gravity Falls
  • Recommended by Eviler Than Thou
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis:"Sasha and Dipper are both rational minds. One is definitely psychic. The other might be."
  • Comments: A fun little One-Shot Fic where the Pines twins are psychics under the tutelage of professional psychic agent Sasha Nein, Dipper struggling to manifest his own abilities. The premise alone could be made into a long-running series but this acts as a pretty solid pilot in-it of itself.

Wild Cards by genalovestoons

  • Recommended by monsterman42
  • Status: Part 1 is Complete, second part Wild Card Shuffle is Ongoing
  • Synopsis: In which a group of very different people are psychic, and the only thing they have in common is that the higher-ups don't trust them. Based on a Psychonauts AU I came up with on tumblr.
  • Crossover with: Puzzle Agent, The Secret of Monkey Island, Brutal Legend, Sam and Max, and Grim Fandango.
