Do warn when a fanfic may head into non-canon or into a territory of its own canon. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Stars by TMBrown

  • Recommended by: rioludoodle, mcgrew, Burginabc
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Nick and Judy write e-mails back and forth as Nick struggles to adapt to the world of being a ZPD Academy trainee, and Judy tries to tackle her next case with a temporary unhelpful partner."
  • Tags: Midquel
  • Unmigrated Reviews
    • This fic pulls off the e-mail exchange between the characters very well and captures their personalities spot-on. Engrossing not only for the events discussed but also the subtext gleaned in between the lines of a very minimalist writing style. Miraculously, not a smidgen of shipping. (rioludoodle)

Zootopia: At Our Core by Granteed

  • Recommended by: Herbieriffer; Dogman15; Burginabc
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Three months after the incident that nearly divided the city of Zootopia in half, Judy and Nick have been making the best of their time as partners on the Z.P.D. Though things have been relatively quiet since then, the agenda of a new activist group coupled with an apparent resurgence of assaults threatens to throw the city into a panic once more."
  • Tags: Sequel

    • Comments: An excellently-paced fic that takes place after the film, provides a lot of characterization and action in the first two chapters and even a correct view of police protocol. A highly engaging read! (Herbieriffer)

The Strongest Bonds by Blenderguy15

  • Recommended by: Soulfire72
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "Two years after the missing mammals case, Nick and Judy take first steps toward settling down. As they continue their police work together, they come across a new case; remnants of Bellwether's work."
  • Pairings: Judy/Nick
  • Tags: Sequel
  • Unmigrated Reviews
    • Comments: A well written story that examines the married life of Nick and Judy while maintaining all their charm and chemistry. All characters are well written and the quality of writing is great despite it being the author's first fanfiction. It elegantly weaves one of the original ideas for the movie into the main conflict. The climax is, emotionally, one of the most powerful I've read in a Zootopian fanfiction so far. Rated for some sexual references and violence. (Soulfire72)

Zootopia: Partners by Kittah4 (also on FFN)

  • Recommended by: Soulfire72
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "A collection of stories of various length and types about the evolving relationship between Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, starting from just as the movie Zootopia ends and beyond. Mostly lighthearted, there are a few intense moments, and some of the stories are cases."
  • Pairings: Judy/Nick
  • Tags: Sequel
  • Unmigrated Reviews
    • Comments: A great collection of one shots that progressively follow Judy and Nick's lives as partners. There's a great mixture of humour, emotion, intensity, and heartwarming moments that remains down to earth for the most part. The goofier chapters come in the crossover/AU chapters, but were still enjoyable nonetheless. A recommended read. (Soulfire72)

Water Under the Bridge by WriteAnon(Link)

  • Recommended by: YonksAgo, Madd The Sane
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Judy and Nick are wrapping up their careers as patrollers and moving up in the echelons of the ZPD. Not a moment too soon, as a seemingly Open-and-Shut Case reveals a deadly conspiracy that could tear the megalopolis apart. Once again, Team WildeHopps must race against the clock against cunning old enemies and dangerous new ones.
  • Pairings: Judy/Nick
  • Tags: Sequel, Dark Fic
  • Unmigrated Reviews
    • Comments: A witty, fast-paced crime drama with an interesting focus on detective work and a slowly unfolding plot. Characterizations are spot on and the dialogue and banter is fresh and clever. Rated R for some mature subject matter, extreme graphic violence, and disguised profanity. (YonksAgo)

A Mountain I'm Willing to Die On by Vera

  • Recommended by: PoweRespect, Red-Dead-Redeemer
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In which they solve a murder, join a movement, and finish falling in love.
  • Pairings: Judy/Nick
  • Tags: Sequel, Dark Fic
  • Unmigrated Reviews
    • Comments: A very intriguing mystery with some romance on the side. Takes place a year after the film, with Judy and Nick living together. (PoweRespect)
    • Seconded! The case itself is a dark mystery that wouldn't be out of place on an episode of Law & Order or some such show, and the issues discussed and the way they're dealt with take the already forward thinking social commentary of the movie and turn the dial up to ten, but the story manages to do all of this while keeping the original spirit of the characters and world intact and does some even more wonderful world building of its own. Also the romance is an extremely well done slow burn that does not distract from the main plot, but rather plays off of it and blends with it seamlessly. (Enjoydamoment)

Lone Diggers by The Qing

  • Recommended by: saltin
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Deep in the neon bowels of the Lone Digger nightclub, Judy & Nick must once again confront the savage heart of their beloved metropolis. (Inspired by Caravan Palace's Lone Digger music video)
  • Tags: Sequel
  • Unmigrated Reviews
    • Comments: This story takes a sombre, complex look at how Zootopia might have changed for the darker after the events of the film as Judy and Nick wade through the aftermath of the eponymous music video while contending with a shadowy new addition to the ZPD. Something of a longer and more dramatic counterpart to the author's similarly morbid, but much more upbeat Zootopia story, Zootopia the Musical: A to ZPD (feat. Benjamin Clawhauser). (saltin)

Zootopia: A Tail of Two by 1tT4k3sTw0

  • Recommended by: lknmjh
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A fan-made sequel taking place months after the first film. When a new villain arrives to threaten Zootopia Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps are on the case. But while they try to solve this case their feelings start to cause a brand new obstacle.
  • Pairings: Judy/Nick
  • Tags: Sequel
  • Unmigrated Reviews
    • Comments: If you thought a fan-made sequel could never be on par with the film itself, then prepare to say goodbye to that way of thinking. The villain's plan is, when you get down to it, a much more sinister plan than Bellwether's. The fanfic also gives time to expand upon Judy and Nick's relationship, not only as ZPD partners, but as what they are to each other. (lknmjh)

Hungry Ghosts by SignificantOtter

  • Recommended by: H.TorranceGriffin, Dancou-Maryuu

    • Comments: Excellent world-building, padded out backstory for Nick, a bit of police corruption, and an Evil Plan that is at once mundane/venal and even more viscerally horrifying than the movie. Be warned, while this is teen rated it is clear at several points that very unpleasant things are going on just off camera. (H.TorranceGriffin)

It has been several months since former mayor Dawn Bellwether's arrest, and Officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde have risen to the challenge of keeping the city from falling apart. Despite the bright outlook promised at stopping the savage predator plot, speciesism, both unlawful and lawful, continues to further divide the populace. Fear, as it turns out, has not loosened its stranglehold on the city. It has only tightened its grip. And this fear has kicked awake something monstrous. When a new, and frankly odd, murder case falls into their laps, the duo jump headlong into the case. • A big-time Cry-for-Bellwether. For what is essentially a "Draco-In-Leather-Pants-Fic", it's really well-done, especially considering the author mostly does smutty furry art. There's more parallels between Bellwether and Judy, and reveals a lot more about her past, motivations, and her role in the Night Howler scandal that I honestly think better fits her character than in the original film. But unlike the typical DILP schlock, it doesn't disregard her more heinous past actions, either. On top of that, it raises the stakes in it's conflict without going full-time grim-dark, tugs at the heartstrings without being overly-sappy, and the OC literally designed to be a romantic interest for Dawn actually feels human (or mammalian, whatever), and NOT like a Gary-Stu.

  • Synopsis: Working for the ZPD is a demanding job, even more so when you are the first of your kind on the force. • Comments: A serious police procedural about a terrorist threat in Zootopia, with an old acquaintance of Nick's at the center of it all. Not a Dark Fic, but deals with some heavy subject matters, including severe discrimination against predator/prey relationships, that tend to be seen as something akin to a rape/murder-fetish.

    • I would like to comment that for something so radically different in style and tone to the original, it's remarkable how thoroughly it manages to avoid Character Derailment for the characters and setting. This is a great strength for it, as all of its drama and pathos is only made stronger by the fact that these are, believably, the same characters we know and love from the movie. -Burginabc

Cut out all that tedious, messy, inconvenient hard work and training that wouldn't look good on film." Nick wants to join the ZPD but real life is messy: a criminal conspiracy, having to get a job, and work out what his relationship with Judy is? Messy

The series itself remains ongoing, although several stories (sometimes styled as "seasons" of 26 chapters) are complete. The earliest stories were retroactively added to the series as prequels. In his notes, the author recommends starting the series with Thanks for the Fox. The series comprises the following stories, in the approximate order the events of the stories occur:
    • Guardian Blue - Who Writes This?!
    • Guardian Blue (Prequel) - Thanks for the Fox
    • Guardian Blue: Season 1
    • Guardian Blue: Season 2

    • Comments: An ambitious hand-drawn webcomic that offers the artist's own interpretation of one of the film's initial (and much darker) narrative drafts by incorporating a multitude of unused design concepts, story beats, and omitted characters. Definitely a must-read. (saltin)
    • I full-heartedly agree with the above sentiment and then some. Also noticeable is that many of the concepts were omitted because it was feared they would cause Too Bleak, Stopped Caring, yet the way this AU is written it not only manages to have its dark themes, but avoid that horrid trope all together. An absolute must-read. (Chloelee 12)
    • I third the above sentiments. The story not only takes the scrapped concepts and ideas of the original Zootopia, but expands upon them as well. Later in the story, the author got the help from other artists to help him update periodically, and the different artistic strips don’t clash with each other. The best part is that they don’t detract from the themes or purpose of the plot either. The way Zistopia handles the scenes to present various emotions make it a hard story to forget. (Superdale 33)

This case takes the two of them to very different places than one might expect, and from that pushes their friendship to its limits. The other crossover elements are used well, and even the brief cameos give a nice feeling of a larger world than just what the original movie presented.

  • Crossover with: Watership Down
  • Tags: Alternate History
  • Comments: This is one of the best, most thorough, and detailed worldbuilding exercises I've yet read in the Zootopia franchise, and would do very well on its own as an alternate-history story. The author carefully blends the disparate universes of Zootopia and Watership Down in a way that makes both seem as if they were always meant to be together, and produces a number of very engaging original characters, including the story's protagonist. Notably, Judy and Nick are presented as platonic BF Fs rather than romantically linked.
