Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Full-Circle by Taisi

  • Recommended by: darkemyst
  • Status: Dormant; last updated February 2018
  • Synopsis: Nishimura sees his first yokai. He handles the whole thing about as well as one might expect.
  • Comment: Great characterization on Natsume's schoolmates and a nice exploration of how they feel about being left out of the loop and might react upon learning about the things Natsume has been hiding from them.

The Human Mask by Harunekonya

  • Recommended by: Trachim_brod
  • Status: Dormant. Last updated August 28, 2016 with 116 chapters.
  • Synopsis: Sequel to Worthy of a Name. Natsume slowly learns to deal with life as a god. An inter-connected vignette series. Gen Fic.
  • Comment: This is a well-written fanfiction, with gripping and well-researched storyline. It's one of those few fanfics which actually improve the original story; here the author broadens Natsume's world, adding spiritual laws, secret organizations and famous legends, plus the interesting original characters. And as incredible as it seems, the writer still manages to stay true to the original work while adding character development as the fanfiction progresses. Ah!, and I nearly forgot to mention the awesome crossover (which you don't need to know to enjoy this fic).

The First Law by DarthNickels

  • Recommended by: shukketsumaru
  • Status: Complete (One-Shot)
  • Synopsis: The world of humans is vastly different from the world of the spirits, and sometimes serious miscommunications occur. Naturally, Natsume finds himself directly in the middle of an enormous one.
  • Comment: Read if you enjoy comedic misunderstandings and heart-warming dramas.

An Ordinary Session by volta_arovet

  • Recommended by: Gintama200
  • Status: Complete (One-shot)
  • Synopsis: Takeo has been to many therapists. This session goes a bit differently.
  • Comment: This is a heartwarming story with a plot-twist at the end. Highly recommend it.

jars and jars of jam by adventureboots

  • Recommended by: Lyra_Dhani
  • Status: Complete (One-shot)
  • Synopsis: “Your parents do realize I am a grown man and not, in fact, a college bachelor in need of feeding, right?” Shuuichi asks, cradling the rice like it’s a child and politely ignoring the strange emotional acrobatics Natsume’s face performs on the word parents. “I can and do feed myself. On a daily basis, even.” Natsume stares at him, unreadable. Natsume’s monster cat peeks over his shoulder, ears flat and judgmental. Even Hiiragi, lurking in the kitchen, levels him with her unblinking one-eyed stare.
  • Comment: A great character study on everyone's favorite actor.

choose to be by Heavenly Dusk

  • Recommended by: Lyra_Dhani
  • Status: Complete (One-shot)
  • Synopsis: It's well-known among the entertainment circle that famous actor Natori Shuuichi has a brother complex. Too bad no one told Natsume about this. (Or, someone who works with Natori a lot brings it upon herself to let Natsume know about his new brother status.)
  • Comment: A fanfic starring Natsume and Natori's brotherly relationship.

Thin Air by riverdaze

  • Recommended by: Lyra_Dhani
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: There are obvious conclusions to be made about Natsume Takashi. The people of Natsume's new home make those conclusions the same as everyone else. The difference lies somewhere else.

Lost Spirit by WerewolvesAreReal

  • Recommended by: Gintama200
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Natsume is 10 years old he watches a movie and wonders why they kept showing that lizard. That line of questioning never went away which led to a premature meeting between Natori and Natsume.
  • Comment: A bittersweet Pre-Series AU that features child neglect, guardian Natori, and an hilarious OC Yokai that follows Natsume around.

the subtle grace of gravity by egelantier

  • Recommended by: Lyra_Dhani
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Five times the Fujiwaras surprise Natsume (including that one time when Natsume absolutely fails to surprise them in turn).

The Treasured Few by tanktrilby

  • Recommended by: Lyra_Dhani
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Natsume wonders whether Reiko could have been that powerful -enough to defeat a grieving god and take his name, whether all the stories about her cold precise mercilessness were true after all.

The White Crow by Codango

  • Recommended by: Lyra_Dhani
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It wasn’t that Touko hadn’t paid attention to Takashi before. She had always noted every scrape, every fever, every unexplained absence. It was just that he was always the picture of abject apology at every turn; she usually found herself reassuring him that all was forgiven, she just wanted him safe, that was all, really now, Takashi-kun, just be careful please… But the next time his friends brought him home from school with glassy eyes and sweat on his pallid face, she found herself thinking of a white crow she’d never seen.

all these years by darkcyan

  • Recommended by: Gintama200
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing: Matoba Seiji/Natori Shuuichi
  • Synopsis: A One-Shot about two kids who both end up in Slytherin but with drastically different outcomes. Matoba is the influential future head of his house and his placement in Slytherin was only expected. Shuuichi, on the other hand, is the sole heir to a mostly dead house and a halfbood child to squibs. It's thanks to his family history that he's the pariah in Slytherin and as such their relationship starts off very rocky as it slowly develops over the years.

     Crossovers

Doubt the Stars Are Fire by TrisakAminawn / Kieron_ODuibhir

  • Recommended by: darkemyst
  • Crossover with: YuYu Hakusho
  • Status: Dormant; last updated August 2018
  • Synopsis: Something has come to Natsume's town. Something huge. Something terrible. Something too powerful to exist in the human world. No one has seen it. But every spirit in the forest knows it's there. Meanwhile, Natsume's new gym teacher is a jerk..
  • Comment: This well-written fic told from Natsume's perspective made me interested enough in the character and his related cast to read his manga.

Welcome to the Club by Ver(verloren1983)

  • Recommended by: Gintama200
  • Crossover with: Hikaru no Go
  • Status: Complete (One-Shot)
  • Synopsis: Hikaru starts seeing strange things that he can't explain- you know, the usual. Why does everything have to happen to him? Then he meets someone, finally, who understands.
  • Comment: This is a unique take on a chance encounter between Natsume and a boy who suddenly starts seeing other-worldly things.

Low Places by brightly_lit

  • Recommended by: Gintama200
  • Crossover with: Supernatural
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Natsume had better watch out because two American hunters have have caught his attention and have planned to eliminate him.
  • Comment: This seems like it could be a actually Supernatural episode. No one was out of character and its a fun little One-Shot following the Winchester's POV on hunting down Natsume. The fic also acknowledges that while we know Natsume couldn't harm a fly, he paints a very unsettling picture for anyone who doesn't strictly know him...
