FanficRecs: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

Authors and Websites

DarkScribes.Org
  • Predating most other NGE fanfic writing circles, DS was one of the earliest English speaking NGE writer circles. Originally comprised of a few writers circa 2001, the stable of writers grew based on invitation by the organization's founder, "Lord Deathscythe". It has since branched to other fandoms, but contains a core number of members who cut their teeth on NGE fanfiction. It spawned "spins-off" websites, including Eva Fics.org.

EvaFics.Org
  • A website dedicated strictly to NGE fanfiction with strict Quality Controls, for those who prefer their fics to be rendered in Standard English, as opposed to netspeak. The forums are now gone, unfortunately, as they once contained a wealth of information that has now been lost. Evafics community now links directly to the Darkscribes forums.

EvaMade.Net
  • A website originally dedicated to NGE fics but since expanded into general fanfiction, with a semi-active community forums containing a similarly useful archive of information.

Merridian's Neon Genesis Evangelion fics (specifically, Soundless Music: Seconds' Clock and The Reality Zone)
  • Recommended by Kchasm
  • The thing about Merridian's Neon Genesis Evangelion fics (specifically, Soundless Music: Seconds' Clock and The Reality Zone) is that they're very well-written and I'm still not entirely sure what I've read. I think they're deep. Or something. But they're also very funny when you're not silently screaming at the computer screen.
    • I wasn't all that impressed by the two listed above, but absolutely loved The Cubicle Adventures. Putting a Dilbertesque corporate spin on NGE, in this case, works very well and is extremely funny.

Reviews and critics

The Evangelion Fanfic Review Syndicate
  • The oldest review group for English language NGE fanfiction, The Evangelion Fanfic Review Syndicate was formed in 1999 by early NGE fans on the NGE mailing list (Evangelion.ml.Org, later known as Eva.One Geek.Org), their reviews offer a glimpse into the distant past of NGE ficdom, when the series was only just beginning to be translated by fans to English. Back then, fans had to rely on the Literal Translation Project to understand what was being said, and few could even get their hands on bootlegged copies of End of Evangelion. The archaic and esoteric stories reviewed offer very different interpretations of the series than contemporary authors tend to offer, and some are very difficult to find on the web today.
    • (Preserved on Archive.org, circa June 03, 2003)
    • While the contained links are pretty uniformly broken, the curious can find most of the stories in question archived here.

SEELE - An Evangelion Fanfic Review group
  • A review group started by another early generation of NGE fans, SEELE's members are also who's-who of fanfic authors who turned out some of the earliest English language NGE fanfiction. Thus, their reviews are of some of the best fanfics early writers had to offer, as well as other stories which have since been long forgotten by newer fans.
    • (Preserved on Archive.org, circa Oct 26, 2007)

Project R
  • A circle of early generation fanfic writers and readers who compiled reviews for NGE fanfiction, Project R provides reviews for some of the best works the NGE fanfic community had to offer as of the early 2000's. The group is now defunct.
    • (Preserved on Archive.org, circa Feb. 17, 2006)

Fanfic Yakuza
  • A circle of NGE fanfic critics who formed in early '01, the "Fanfic Yakuza" were unified by their unabashed willingness to flame fanfiction they hated. Hence the "yakuza" theme. While the majority of their reviews were negative listing of fanfics to avoid, a few reviews point to that elusive 10% you should read.
    • (Preserved on Archive.org, circa Feb. 03, 2004)

General Fics

Stories focused on the non-romantic relationships between the cast members, plot-focused stories, light day-in-the-life stories...pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance. Those have their own section.

Crossovers

.hack

hackEVA: Catharsis, by AlfheimWanderer
  • Recommended by Comartemis
  • Synopsis: CC Corporation is promoting their newest game by sending out thousands of free laptops preloaded with The World: R2, and Shinji Ikari has just received his copy. Seeking to flee from his issues in the real world, Shinji jacks in as the Adept Rogue Skari. But this is .hack// we're talking about, and as Shinji is about to discover, the line between fantasy and reality isn't so clear-cut as one might like to imagine...
  • Comments: No, you read that right. It's a bonafide .hack/Evangelion crossover, and though this troper hasn't finished reading yet, he's already impressed enough to deem it worthy of this list. AlfheimWanderer has done a magnificent job of taking the best of the philosophical themes found throughout the .hack series and spelling them out in plain and simple terms, so even those who've played all the .hack games, seen the anime, and read the novels will probably find something new to think about here. The story as of chapter 11 seems to bear a closer resemblance to .hack//SIGN than any of the games; there isn't a whole lot of overt conflict against a concrete enemy (yet), but there is a lot of character development and exploration of the themes found in the .hack series; fans of the original quartet will be pleased to know that What Measure Is A Non Human is back in full force courtesy of Morganna and Lycoris being resurrected in Tokyo-3 via reality-warping backlash from a failed Third Impact.

Revolutionary Girl Utena

Shin Kakumei Evangelion/Neon Revolutionary Evangelion by Ashnod
  • Recommended by anthiens and Koveras
  • Synopsis: A cross-over between EVA and Revolutionary Girl Utena, it changes things so that each universe fits in the other. Miki and Shinji are good friends, Juri's one-sided crush is Asuka, etc. The writing is excellent and the changes make very good sense. It's a retelling from where Utena, rather than Shinji, has arrived at Tokyo-3 and Ohtori has been moved to the Geo-Front where all the Pilots go to school and learn fencing from Juri, where certain events ensue. Contrast with Hilarity Ensues.
  • Comments: The writer is excellent and does a jaw-dropping job at bringing together two disparate genres with two pieces that share many themes. The changes don't feel forced at all and everyone is in character.
    • Nabi: No one's mentioned it so far, but since I feel it's needed, a warning: this is a Script Fic. I'm sure I'm not the only one put off by that format. (A shame, too - I would've loved to read it otherwise.)

Fane of the Firebird, by Daniel Snyder (link to chapter 1 of 31)
  • Recommended by Binaroid
  • Synopsis: This story is more of a full-fledged fusion between Evangelion and Utena. Shinji Ikari has just transferred to the Feuervogel Academy boarding school, and the confusion over him being registered to stay at a girls' dorm turns ugly when it's learned that he's the son of the school pariah, Gendou. Shinji is soon forced to duel Ritsuko Akagi for a place at the academy. Surreality, psychological and Body Horror, and Christian philosophy ensue.

The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy

The Angel of Doubt by Temjin-On (Crossover)
  • Recommended by SeanTucker, Willbyr
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: It's an Original Flavor Crossover fic... but it's not in Eva's Original Flavor, it's in Douglas Adams' style. Shinji discovers the Hitchhiker's Guide, and it turns out that Kaji is Ford Prefect.
  • Comments: It's only got 2 chapters at the moment, but what's there is beyond awesome.
    • Inkki Bookman: It now has 3 chapters.
    • Willbyr: The author does a good job of aping Adams' prose, and keeps the absurdity and humor flowing consistently.

Warhammer 40 K

Shinji And Warhammer 40 K by Bluepencil
  • Recommended by Crazael, Tacitus, Document N, Sean Tucker, Shockz, Space Chief, FLCNPNCH, Willbyr
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Shinji, while still a small child, finds someone's Warhammer 40 K collection in a heavy black case and the changes an introduction to that universe make in both his personality and actions result in a radically different course of events.
  • Comments:
    • Document N: Too bad it's so far unfinished.
    • Tacitus: I have had little knowledge of or interest in Evangelion, yet this fan fic sank its claws into me so deep I was compelled to do little but read it for three days straight as I watched an unfamiliar world slowly change into one I knew intimately. It basically operates under the thesis that Anything + Warhammer 40,000 = Awesome, and is entertainingly successful. So Eva Unit 01 + W40K = Principio Eternus: "The enemies of man will die, by my hands they shall be broken." Shinji, allegedly one of the greatest pusses of all animedom + W40K = a mixture of Captain Carrot and Paul Atreides. Creepy dead-eyed child Rei + W40K = something too hilariously awesome to spoil. Sure, some may cry Marty Stu or Plot Derailment, but it's a fun what-if scenario with enough Genre Savvy and pop-culture references to counteract the occasional spelling error. Highly recommended: the prologue alone is marvelous, and it actually made this troper reflect upon how much an impact the game had on his own development.
    • Sean Tucker: My god... I think I've found the absolute Holy Grail of fanfics. Requesting permission to find out if the author is a troper, and if he is, shower him in Made Of Win awards. Seriously... they turned Shinji Fucking Ikari into a Magnificent Bastard Badass Bookworm who gets at least one Crowning Moment Of Awesome every minute. Even Super Robot Wars wasn't able to go that far with its awesome.
    • Shockz: I found a reference to this fic by accident, and started reading it with some basic WH40K knowledge and a vague (if completely spoiled) understanding of NGE's storyline. It gets a little verbose (and it's tough to keep track of some of the minor characters if you haven't seen NGE yet), but is nonetheless one of the most awesome things I have ever read. Give this man a budget!
    • Space Chief: As much as I think the original series was genius in Deconstruction terms, I've accepted this fic as my own personal canon. Sorry, Anno, but there's a reason that this is one of the few fics that has its own page on this wiki.
      • I go so far as to just say that the entire original series is just a nightmare that Shinji is having had he never found that fateful black box.
    • No...words. Should have sent...a poet. I have only one thing to say after reading this; Other Fan Fic writers, DESPAIR, and accept that nothing you ever write will be half as fucking awesome as even a chapter of this epic. The Emperor's hand guides us all.
    • Sneebs: I'm probably going to get Inquisitors up my arse, but this didn't rock my world as much as it was supposed to. While very funny and deliciously off-the-wall, characterization couldn't have become less flat if they were the main female cast of Disgaea. Regardless of what the Author say he's doing, Shinji manifests the dread character blight of Marty Stu-dom as he defies Eva-canon laws of phsyics and wins the fanatical loyalty of the staff of NERV with such defiance of physical laws. Characters simply side with Shinji because the author wants it to turn out that way. Recommended, but with a grain of salt. If you feel like something silly and off-the-wall, then by all means indulge yourself; if your're a overly serious and pretentious prick like me, go and have a bit to drink before giving this one a go.
      • [insert obligatory humorous comment screaming 'DEATH TO THE HERETIC! FOR THE EMPEROR!' here]
    • FLCNPNCH: Personally, the best part about this fic is the politics, my god the 'politics'! Shinji... Kaworu...both want the best for humanity, both have perfectly valid methods...but neither can exist while the other survives and they'd quite gladly kill each other to decide the final fate of humanity, and you might even find yourself questioning whether or not Shinji's the best man to control the future of man. Brilliant!
    • Willbyr: My inner Grammar Nazi cringes at times while reading this, but I have to second every positive comment above. This fic is insanely addictive, one of the most fun reads I've had in quite some time, and was my introduction to NGE fanfiction. I wish it was complete, but I'm glad to see that it's still being updated.

Thousand Shinji by Academia Nut
  • Recommended by Guessmyname, Gentlemens Dame 883, Earth Scorpion
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A crossover with Warhammer 40,000, different from Shinji And Warhammer 40 K because it's an actual universe crossover rather than the boardgame making an appearance.
  • Comments:
    • Gentlemens Dame 883: I'll second Thousand Shinji, if only because of the final passage, which is an absolutely hilarious riffing of the "summary" that prefaces the Warhammer 40000 books. Though it of course has more merits than just that.
    • Earth Scorpion: Well, that and the fact that it is a) completely awesome, and b) does a much, much better job at merging the settings, rather than just crossing them over, than Shinji and Warhammer 40k.
    • FLCNPNCH: Thousand Shinji has been sequel'd. The Open Door could also fit into Mega Crossovers.
    • Comartemis: This troper will grant this one a tentative recommendation with the footnote that he greatly prefers S&W40K's execution. However he absolutely will not under any circumstances recommend The Open Door, which is a yawn-inducing tale of how God Mode Sues Always Triumph.
    • Nolrai: Where as I like it better then Thousand Shinji, its not about weather or even how the Boring Invincible Hero wins its about how that effects the world around them.

Cthulhu Mythos and related

Children of an Elder God by John Biles and Rod M.
  • Recommended by Crazael, DMint, Tacitus, Anthiena
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: While it is still sadly unfinished, it is still a must-read. CoaEG is an AU that fuses Evangelion with the works of H.P. Lovecraft that is very well written, with only a few new characters and well thought out changes, where instead of battling Angels the Children fight the Old Gods for the future of humanity.
  • Comments:
    • Looney Toons: Note that an "incomplete" John Biles fic is almost never a Dead Fic. Biles works on many projects simultaneously, and chapters for any of them may appear unexpectedly.
      • Looney Toons: As of August 2009, Biles has announced impending new material.
    • Tacitus: ...it is simply remarkable how well the Cthulhu Mythos meshes with Evangelion in terms of theme and tone. Cosmic horrors, paranoia, dangerous knowledge and fortunate ignorance, twisted bloodlines, forbidden and corrosive technology, insanity... It's such an obvious crossover I'm surprised it wasn't done in the source material.
    • Lightice: It starts out incredibly well, but the quality deteriorates as the plot advances. Do yourself a favour and don't read the two final chapters so far; they pretty much kill the absolutely fantastic concept.
      • The Tygre: Seconded: Personally, I read ahead and didn't even finish Hastur I was so put off by it. I mean REALLY? What Hell man?! What Hell?! I'm still angry at this fic for leading me on a certain pairing and then DOING A BLOODY TURN-AROUND HALF-WAY THROUGH. Without an ending, thank you very much... Trust me, just stop at Hastur. If you stop at Hastur, you'll lead a better life than I.
      • Thirded. The chapter with Ygolonac was the real Jumping-the-Shark moment for me, though. Although the pairing change was extremely annoying as well (and very evil to one of the characters involved). However when you look at the disturbing way the whole relationship subplot seems to be proceeding, I'm guessing it'll be concluded with everyone on-everyone, in a style reminiscent of IT. If it ever finishes. The story is still pretty good though.
    • Tze Tze: Obviously Your Mileage May Vary, 'cuz I think the Hastur thing was the first real cosmic horror. Pretty cool. (but then, I don't care about shipping)
      • The Tygre: No, no, I meant read Hastur and then stop. Hastur was awesome, to teh extremez. And it wasn't just the shipping that annoyed me after a while it was...a lot. It's like... Just, why did everyone have wings?!
      • Tzetze: 'cuz it's awesome? Besides, the He Who Fights Monsters aspect got really played up after that.
      • The Tygre:...Touche, Signore Tzetze, touche indeed...
      • FLCNPNCH: In regards tho the He Who Fights Monsters aspect, it's implied in the later chapters that something very similar to the Chzo Mythos is going on but with the Gods instead of Chzo and Nylarhotep instead of Cabadath, hence why Nylarhotep's so freaked out...
      • Tzetze: By the by, it hasn't updated since 2004.
    • Unhappy: The Dreamlands sequences were horrible, and felt completely out of place. One moment everyone is perfectly in character, and then people go to sleep and every character is a Possession Sue. Skip them if you want to read this. In fact, don't read this. The excellent buildup in the early chapters just isn't worth the dissapointment you get as you read on.

Aeon Natum Engel by Earth Scorpion
  • Recommended by Gentlemens Dame 883, Latw PIAT, Lavanya Six
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: It is 2091 and the Angels Heralds are attacking. Gendo Ikari, head of the Ashcroft Foundation, has called his son Shinji to London to pilot the Evangelion Titan-class Engel into battle against them.
  • Comments: As the synopsis shows, this is a crossover with Cthulhu Tech, as odd as that might sound. It works, though. Aeon Natum Engel manages to improve on a number of the flaws of the original series, mostly by treating them realistically — like the understandably over-enthusiastic security for Shinji's school. It also provides a nice if worrying deconstruction of Misato's Lethal Chef-ery, which you may already have read in the former article.
    • Nerdorama: Hey! No recursing! Just kidding. This is another good look at Evangelion done in a (very slightly) different setting.
    • Latw PIAT: If anything, Earth Scorpion has really captured the characters and emphasized non-common elements of their personality; Rei, for one, is actually creepy like she should be, in the same way that vanilla!Rei was creepy.
    • Lavanya Six: An excellent fusion and well worth someone's time to read. The deconstruction of Misato's Lethal Chef talent was like a punch to the gut.
    • Willbyr: Having no experience with Cthulhu Tech or F.E.A.R, a lot of the references have gone right over my head, but I enjoyed this a lot and will definitely be keeping up with it. This is Earth Scorpion's discussion thread about the fic, which details a lot of the background info and is highly recommended reading.

Ranma 1/2

Paradise Lost by Andy Kent (Also available here, just seach for Paradise Lost)
  • Recommended by dkellis, Nerdorama, Cryptic Mirror
  • Synopsis: Fuses Ranma 1/2 with Neon Genesis Evangelion. In this case, the role of Shinji Ikari is played by Ryouga Hibiki.
  • Comments: Sadly unfinished.
    • Nerdorama: I can recommend this one even though I don't really like Ranma 1/2. I will say I'm upset that it ends before getting around to Israfel though, as dance-kung fu-battling is exactly the kind of wackiness I'd have expected from such a crossover.

NGE:Angel of light by weebee
  • Recommended by Nolrai, Cryptic Mirror
  • Synopsis: This one is a straight cross over. Ranma in the NGE world.
    • Shay Guy: I remember this one. Mediocre.

I Do by Innortal (Comedy and multi-shipping fic)
  • Recommended by Cryptic Mirror
  • Synopsis: It's just a school assingment, pretend to live as a married couple, the standard stuff, learn how to prepare a budget, share chores that sort of thing. Unfortunately someone forgot how literally Rei takes everything and what would marriage be without a marriage certificate and a honeymoon. Oh Shinji, you poor bastard.
  • Comments: Hilarious and works surprisingly well for an Evangelion setting with an Original Flavor Ranma, in terms of relationships and interactions, mashup. Major Gendo bashing is involved, and the way the adult Ranma and his family is drawn in is inspired (and possibly unique). Lime content warnning though.
    • Willbyr: I've never been a big Ranma fan, so for me, as those elements became more pronounced, the humor tapered off a bit...the fic could've dropped the Ranma aspect entirely and still worked just fine. That being said, I like what the author did with both the Eva and Ranma characters...Original Flavor yet still very much in character. Overall this fic is very funny, check it out ASAP.

The Matrix

The Evangelion Matrix and the sequel The Eva Matrix Regurgitated by sentinel28
  • Recommended by Dragon Quest Z
  • Synopsis: Otakus were so upset by End of Evangelion, that US censors were able to round anime characters up and put them in a simulation of Evangelion. Then Eva and other anime characters act out roles from The Matrix.
    • Shinji — Neo
    • Asuka — Trinity
    • Gendo — Morpheus
    • Sailor Moon — Agent Smith
  • Comments: Total fun for both stories, but the sequel unfortunately seems to be a Dead Fic. Otherwise a great read. A highlight is in the sequel, where Shinji and Asuka are making love, but we don't see exactly how. The best we can see is that Shinji is dressed as Godzilla and Asuka is dressed as Tokyo.

Ghost In The Shell

The Ghost of Evangelion, by Latw PIAT
  • Recommended by Earth Scorpion
  • Status: New
  • Synopsis: An exceptionally well thought-out crossover, blending Evangelion with the gritty post-cyberpunk world of Ghost in the Shell. The author obviously knows his stuff, and has very skilfully performed a mythology transplant, cutting out the Judaeo-Christian Angels for Sumerian mythology. Plus, it has Tachikomas, and Misato and the Major interacting. Only one chapter so far, but it's a really good one chapter.
  • Comments: Being a fan of both Evangelion and Git S, I'm looking forward to seeing how this evolves. If the rest of the story goes like this first chapter, it'll be a great fic.

Multi-franchise

The Ineffable Crossover by Lavanya6
  • Recommended by Schizo Technician, X Shouldve Died
  • Synopsis: A crossover with Good Omens and Death Note, with references to a LOT of other series from Spiderman to Ocean's 11... Original Flavor for Good Omens. Rife with Shout Outs, absolutely hilarious, full of meta-humor, and the author shows signs of being One Of Us.
  • Comments:
    • Ya don't say...
    • Looney Toons: I hope that's tongue-in-cheek, as Lavanya6 has commented on another fic of theirs recommended above.
    • Lavanya Six: This may be a first, but I'm not going to recommend this fanfic. It's basically an escape valve for Taking Sights with no pretense towards sanity or quality and only the barest thread of continuity. It's just a big Shaggy Dog Story meant to mock Mega Crossovers.
    • X Shouldve Died: Alright admittedly its spiraling wildly the fuck out of control but its still funny as fuck. That, and the whole 'forever young' thing that was played with in the opening was god damn inspired even if its now getting completly buried beneath an avalanche of jokes.

Sic Semper Morituri by Daniel Jess Wilson (Also available here)
  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Another take on the H.P. Lovecraft fusion, only from a different angle and with Time Travel and a few extra crossover elements — Ranma ½, Ah My Goddess — to leaven the mix. Oh, and it's set immediately after World War Two in a very Alternate Universe.
  • Comments: Incomplete but far from abandoned — the latest installment in this setting came out in late Spring 2009. The authors seem to be running two parallel storylines at the moment: the "main" one, and an extensive exploration of Asuka and Jeff's time trapped in the version of Nerima from which their amnesiac Ranma came, which itself turns out to be a megacrossover world incorporating (at the very least) Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo.
    • BTW: Poke-Walk is a "sequel" to this taking the original character from Sic Semper Morituri after he sacrifices himself to save the universe. He has problems when people he needs to trust look just like and have the same name as people that betrayed him horribly.

Comedy/Parody

Misato's Predicament by Lara Bartram. (Also available here)
  • Recommended by Namta, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Misato, obsessed with trying to figure out if Ritsuko is gay, accidentally gets some very NSFW paperwork loose in NERV's bureaucracy. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Comments: Probably the funniest NGE fanfic ever written. Yes, funny. Contains massive amounts of both HoYay and Les Yay played for laughs.

Shinji vs The Nazi Vampires In Space
  • Recommended by Spidey3000
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Shinji, now leader of a group of mercenaries, fights Nazi vampires. In space. Oh, and Rei's in it too.

Neon Genesis Evanjellydonut by Shizumaru (Also found here)
  • Recommended by ShayGuy.
  • Synopsis: A silly reworking of a few episodes' worth of the original story.
  • Comments: Misato's Predicament does have competition for the title of the funniest NGE fanfic ever written, though, in Neon Genesis Evanjellydonut.
    • Willbyr: Consistently amusing, but ITTO not as funny as Predicament.

The More, The Merrier by Andrew Aelfwine
  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: What is Rei doing for Shinji and Asuka that leaves them moaning and begging for more? Misato's not sure she wants to find out, but she may not have a choice...
  • Comments: A short, funny story that's cute... and not at all what it seems to be at first.

Shinji Theater by gunman
  • Recommended by Hanz
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Shinji's in a coma that he can't wake up from and Ritsuko has invented something that allows them to see his dreams, which takes form as interpretations of characters in pastiches of classic stories such as King Kong, Godzilla (1998) and even a parody of the Super Robot genre.
  • Comments: Not only are the dreams themselves rather hilarious as well as being Take Thats to each of the regular characters, but the comments and reactions of the characters (ranging from shock and horror to just plain cracking up) is worth reading.
    • Looney Toons: I'm afraid I wasn't very impressed by this work. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of characterization and there isn't really a story — just a loose framework to give the author an excuse to present some mostly plotless Elseworlds. I was really hoping for a lot more.
      • Sneebs: Seconded. Poor writing and zero characterization makes this a waste of time. I feel as though I'm reading a ten-year-old's short story for remedial writing class. Avoid.
      • Nightraid I disagree. The headline of the fanfic outright states that it is supposed to be a parody/humor fic. It doesn´t mean to provide deep characterization because it´s entire purpose is to provide you with funny and absurd situations to laugh at. And I sure got some goods laughs out of it.
    • Willbyr: Not one of the best on this page, but still worth checking out.

It Can’t Get Worse by Zentrodie
  • Recommended by Cryptic Mirror
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Shinji and Asuka are put through a perfectly safe experiment by Ritsuko to try and raise their synch rates. What Could Possibly Go Wrong? A Shinji and Asuka Body Swap comedy.
  • Comments: Currently standing at four chapters and counting. Asuka in Shinji's body is comedy gold, although fair warning that the Shinji as Asuka has Mandys Law Of Anime Gender Bending in full effect. Full of laugh-out-loud moments, from Misato and Ritsuko's attempt to foist the blame for the fiasco on each other in front of Gendo to Asuka's first morning "experience" as Shinji. Who says the Eva-verse can't be funny?
    • Looney Toons: I'm not as impressed with this fic as Mirror is. Zentrodie does have a good sense of plot and character development, and a reasonable ear for comedy. But the fic is riddled with eggcorns, malaprops, word choice errors and semirandom punctuation — there are virtually no sentences in the entire four chapters I read that don't have some kind of problem. It looks like it's written by someone who's never actually read anything before, and doesn't quite know what English is supposed to look like.
      • At the risk of natter I should point out I'm pretty severely dyslexic, so I tend not to notice a lot of spelling and grammar issues as I look at the general wordshape of a piece rather than the nuts and bolts, however it didn't trigger any major dyslexia issues with me.
      • Looney Toons: I'm not denigrating your opinion, just noting that mine differs from yours. I should also note that I've put this fic on my "check for updates" list, because I did enjoy it despite its flaws.
      • Cryptic Mirror: Now complete. However it kinda falls apart in the final chapter. Up til then it is pretty good, but the last chapter shows clear signs of a writer who has gotten bored of the story and just wants to wrap it up. Still worth a read though.

How Not to Write Evangelion Fanfics and How Not to Write Evangelion SelfInsertions by sentinel28
  • Recommended by Dragon Quest Z, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete (both)
  • Synopsis: Two stories poking fun at bad Eva fan fiction. The first just gives a general list of mistakes and examples of why they suck. The second is Gendo narrating what not to do with self insertions, since he knows how NERV runs, and what would actually happen to any would-be Mary Sue there.
  • Comments: Just overall funny. The best I can do here is a highlight from each respective story:
First story — Well, it was either that or La Blue Girl versus the Tentacleophon. (4th angel)
Second story — Kaji Ryoji (making him fall for you). Sure, why not! Join every other damn woman in Japan! Sheep! That’s what you are, sheep!
    • Willbyr — Both of these are very funny and, in their own snarky way, have a lot of good advice.

The Last Phonecall by Lavanya Six

Chicks Dig Giant Robots by Rorschach's Blot
  • Recommended by K 9 Thefirst 1
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A very different Shinji comes to Tokyo III.
  • Comments: A hilarious alternate take of Eva, with instead of Shinji being a psycologically destroyed boy looking for his father's approval, he sees anything and everything that Gendo does to him as making up for the abandonment. A laugh a minute one-shot that involved Shachiel getting a kick to the nards and even an implied masochistic Asuka. It's like Eva written by the writers of Gurran Lagann!! Sure it's not a deep and thought-provoking satire of the series like It Can't Get Worse, but a fun read none the less that uses comedy simply for the sake of comedy.

  • Recommended by Inkki Bookman
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Forty years after saving the world from 3rd Impact, Rei, Shinji and Asuka were sent back in time to when Shinji was first picked up by Misato. The twist is that this past is somewhat different in that Shinji lives with Misato at the base instead of the apartment and instead of a school, he now has to go to a military Academy, not to mention how the Angel timeline seems to be off as well.
  • Comments: Despite been this writer's first novel, he seems to be quite able to write an interesting and fairly original story, he isn't up to Random1337's league but that's ok.
    • Eh...Shay Guy finds the writing too damn clunky to get through.
    • Willbyr: I didn't even make it past the intro to Unit 01/reunion with Gendo scene..."clunky" is putting it nicely.

Taking Sights by Lavanya Six
  • Recommended by Guessmyname, Looney Toons, X Shouldve Died, Willbyr
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: I'd like to recommend this fanfic. It's another Peggy Sue, except that this time Gendo goes back. To be found here
  • Comments:
    • Looney Toons: Seconding Taking Sights. It also seems to be written by someone who at least reads the wiki, if not one of the tropers proper, as the most recent chapter had one character challenging another to come up with an "Ass Pull", while another was accused of "taking Refuge In Audacity".
    • Don't forget the reference to Rei being Raised By Wolves. Hardly surprising that there are loads and loads of 'em, considering that the author calls it a "Peggy Sue" fic, and names us as the source of the term, in the fourth sentence of the preface. Also references to "Manipulative Bastard," "Ax Crazy," "Death Of A Thousand Cuts"... Shinji and Warhammer40k has been doing the same thing in recent chapters.
    • Nerdorama: I propose two separate drinking games. One shot for every gratuitous TV Tropes Wiki reference, and one shot for every time It Got Worse in an increasingly EPIC manner. Either one alone will kill you, but hey, you had fun reading.
      • X Shouldve Died: No such thing as a "gratuitous" Lampshade Hanging. Well there probably is, but your not going to find it in this fic least of ways.
      • Lavanya Six: To be honest, I've tried to cut down on the outright trope dropping though I'll still use concepts I pick up from this wiki. As for It Got Worse... it hasn't. It really hasn't. Not yet.
      • Nerdorama: Don't get my earlier statement wrong, I'm reading eagerly to see just how much trouble these guys are going to get themselves into, and am laughing evilly at this promise from the author.
      • Lavanya Six: As of August '09, I've tried to purge all the examples of Trope Words I could find in Taking Sights. I'd rather not distract the reader with them, and it's a bit embarrassing for me to look over the story and see them pop up.
    • Sneebs: Worth the time. Some overuse of Trope Words can be mildly distracting to Wiki-ites, but by examining that cold and monstrous man known as Gendo Ikari in such a way to make the reader not loath him and (dare I say it?) actually feel sympathetic towards his plight clearly makes up for this. Also noteworthy was a disturbingly insightful look into how the minds of Angels work: the scenes told from Sachiel's perspective are fascinating. Highly recommended.
    • Willbyr: Honestly, I found the trope-dropping in S&WH40K to be more in-your-face than in this tale, although it doesn't hurt either story. The story also connects to Kimigabuchi's doujin RE-TAKE in multiple ways, I was very interested in the changes both major and subtle in the characters' interactions (this is one of the darkest spins on Rei I've seen), as well as some of the changes that appear to have been made in the story's future events, especially Shinji actually killing Asuka on the beach, and Asuka's soul somehow being stuck in Unit 01 along with Yui's near the end of the universe.

The Second Try by Jimmy Wolk
  • Recommended by Nerdorama, Shay Guy, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: You know what, let's just complete the listing of the entire damn Peggy Sue page and throw in The Second Try, in my opinion the best of these after Re-Take.
  • Comments: The rest of the author's work is also good, especially his one-shots, if incredibly WAFFy at times. I was amazed to learn English wasn't his first language (though unsurprised to learn it was German).
    • Still Nerdorama: There is now a manga/FanWebComic sequel in progress. Words fail me.
    • Shay Guy: As pleased as I am, and as impressed by the art as I am, why is it right-to-left? And why not just call it a "webcomic?"
    • Nerdorama: Well, I called it a "manga" because it's written right-to-left, and I have no idea why he did it that way in the first place. We all have varying lengths we're willing to go for "authenticity" I guess. I'm also well aware that it's a Fan Web Comic, but since it's the sequel to a text Fan Fic, I wanted to mention it here rather than there.
    • Willbyr — I would recommend Second Try in a heartbeat. The characterizations are played perfectly straight, and the interactions between post-3I Shinji and Asuka are handled with grace and insight...several of these scenes easily qualify as CMsOH.
  • Unknown Troper: Also on FanFiction.Net, EvaFics.Org and EvaMade, which the author recommends over her own site. Although her own site also contains his fan art, much of which is hilarious.

Better Luck Next Time by Lavanya Six
  • Recommended by Cryptic Mirror, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A short one shot deconstructing the various "Shinji becomes a badass and effortlessly defeats Gendo" fics.
  • Comments: Darkly humourous and the perfect antidote to all the over played "Shinji the hero" fics that exist out there. Non Geocities.
    • This is pretty much a definitive treatment of Gendo as Manipulative Bastard.
    • Nerdorama: I was going to complain that this seemed to be particularly sniping at Once More With Feeling (below), but then I remembered all Evangelion Peggy Sue fics have basically the same plot anyway, details included. Then I just enjoyed the irony of Gendo making similar (if less obvious) "mistakes" when the positions are reversed in Lavanya's other fic.

Marty Stu/Self Insert

Higher Learning by Strike Fiss (Also available here)
  • Recommended by Universalperson
  • Synopsis: I may be repeating myself, but I still recommend Higher Learning by Strike Fiss. Although it was made well before certain supplemental materials were released, it is still a joy to read.
  • Comments: Warnings: WAFF, possible Marty Stu.
    • Servbot: If he's a Marty Stu, he's a very well handled one. Quite a few Evangelion fanfic communities had nominated or given him the Best New Character title in their online Evangelion Fanfiction Awards. A considerable feat, considering how Evangelion fanfic communities despise the Marty Stu.
    • EddieCurrent: This was my introduction to Eva. And it didn't ruin it for me. What makes it work, despite the happier take on the ending, is that Fiss tackles almost the exact same themes as the original, while bringing plenty more to the table.
    • Willbyr: All in all, this was a lot of fun to read. There's plenty of WAFF but never enough that it becomes suffocating, the darker material is handled smartly, and the presence of Kaoru Miyazaki never hurts the story or feels out of place, although there were aspects of the story involving him that weren't explained to my satisfaction. I especially liked how Shinji's experience of Instrumentality was handled. The omakes, for the most part, are very funny.

Neon Exodus Evangelion by Eyrie Productions Unlimited
  • Recommended by Crazael, Kchasm, St Clair, Looney Toons, Zemyla
  • Synopsis: It's Neon Genesis Evangelion mixed with a fairly large selection of games, movies and tv shows and transplanted to the authors' home town of Worcester, Massachusetts.
  • Comments: Be warned — the first few chapters can be rather hard to get through due to DJ Croft who, in the first three chapters or so, is good at everything and liked by everyone but Gendo.
    • Kchasm: I kind of but almost didn't like this fic — the fact that somehow, all of the good guys manage to survive to the very end without getting killed kind of destroyed my suspension of disbelief.
    • Shay Guy wishes to note while speaking of himself in the third person that it's one of the most controversial Eva fics in the Anglosphere, if not the most. The first several chapters (maybe more) have MiSTings.
    • Tacitus: After the MS Ting crew at Elmer Studios introduced me to DJ Croft, I was puzzled why he'd be up here. Then, they introduced me to Tom Dyron. And Jim Beckett. And Isamu. And...(shudder)...Issei. Now I've concluded that while Mr. Croft has some problems, they aren't crippling, mind-poisoning problems. I'll give his creator a conditional recommendation based on being able to at least write a narrative, while every other link I posted gets a recommendation for being either a hilarious riffing of a fanfic, a So Bad Its Good piece of garbage, or both.
      • Shay Guy: Psst...DJ Croft's the protagonist, not the author.
      • St Clair: A dismayingly common mistake, but understandable, considering the author's other works. This troper can say that as far as he knows, the original intention was not self-insert, but merely to add the un-angsty action hero that some feel NGE desperately needs.
      • Tacitus: I concede the point and shall correct my review, but suspect that the line between the two may be hazy. Or perhaps I am just cynical from far too many self-insert stories...
      • Looney Toons: Trust me, the folks at EPU have no compunctions about doing self-inserts, and have no need to hide them behind masks. If they had intended to have themselves inside that story, you would have known it immediately.
      • inklesspen: Indeed; the self-inserts would be named after their real-world counterparts. John Trussell, for instance.

Evangelion II: D.E.L.T.A. Invasion, Original by unknown, MST'd by Jinas & Rick R. Mortis (Also avaiable here)
  • Recommended by Tacitus
  • Synopsis: Tom Dyron — 16-year-old fighter pilot, rock musician, and championship wrestler — joins the Eva team some time after the defeat of the Angels (utterly ignoring the last few episodes of the show) to deal with the latest threat — the Invadors. Yes, that's spelled right. In the process, he drinks a lot, wrestles, bags Asuka, drinks some more, sets up Shinji with Rei, pilots a spaceship, blows up a planet, wrestles, gets the other pilots to join his band, and talks like Steve Austin. There's also John, who contributes nothing to the plot, but is special.
  • Comments: To paraphrase a famous golden robot, this fic has everything, all wrong. Atrocious writing, inane dialogue, formulaic and repetitive scripts, pointless scenes that exist solely to boost the author's ego, stupid monsters, plot holes, abuses of scale both physical and temporal...and to cap it off, one of the worst author avatars/Marty Stus in history. Its mere existence improves the quality of every other fanfic, and will make you appreciate more refined Sues and Stus from 'fics you previously sneered at. Fortunately, Elmer Studios' treatment turns this paragon of suck into something entertaining. Chapter One's in the link at the top, and you can either navigate the Elmer Studios site to find the other installments in this 13-part series, or change the number before the ".txt." in the page's url. Or, if you want a quick sample, just hit the Random DELTA Invasion Episode Generator for an uncannily close approximation of an average chapter.

Hellstorm Evangelion, Original by Issei Mataloun, MST'd by Jinas & Rick R. Mortis
  • Recommended by Space Chief, Tacitus
  • Synopsis: After the angels have been seemingly defeated, the devil shows up in Tokyo-3 and causes Shinji to wet his pants. Issei, a new Eva pilot (in distressingly tight shorts) soon follows and promptly hooks up with Shinji. Together, they fight Chewbacca and Torgo, find a portal to hell under their bed, watch people explode and — why haven't you clicked the link yet?
  • Comments: One of the most beloved, influential, apocalyptic, and revolutionary series of our time...as interpreted by a twelve-year-old. Tied with D.E.L.T.A as the worst NGE fic in existence, though this one is exponentially more fun to read. While D.E.L.T.A Tom Dyron & Friends slowly sucks the life out of the series and characters through thirteen long installments, Hellstorm wastes no time in gleefully warping the entire Eva universe beyond recognition. Characters act extremely OOC and/or explode (one even shows up just to explode), the fight scenes are ludicrous, the Marty Stu-ing is obvious and Stu-ish indeed, and the writing is rife with errors a sea of bad grammar and spelling with occasional patches of near-coherence. Essentially, it's the NGE fandom's own version of Full Life Consequences. While the original has long-since vanished from the net, it's available in both MSTed (1,2) and podcast flavors [1]. Also, check out the sequel. One has to wonder what poor Issei Mataloun is up to these days...
    • Tacitus: Aberration of canon aside, I like Issei. His story has a sense of whimsy that makes the ridiculous events that unfold within easier to manage, as you enter a sort of zen-like trance where the insanity just flows through you...or maybe that's the sensation of your brain shutting down in self-defense. Better than drugs.
    • Pcnerdjack14: Recently, I have made an un-MST'd version of Hellstorm, which can be view here.

I Was a Teenage Dummy Plug by Foxboy
  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: When the mind/soul/personality of the twenty-something and male Logan Goodhue wakes up inside a Rei Ayanami clone floating in the Reiquarium, it's just the beginning of an experience that is by turns terrifying, exhilirating and hallucinogenic. Quickly discovered and forced by Gendo into the dual roles of Rei's long-lost twin sister Emi Arizona Ayanami and the new object of Shinji's protective instincts, Logan does what little things he can to derail Gendo's plans and regain some control over his life. Complicating matters, it appears that Logan's set of Evangelion DVDs came over with him... and why do some of the Angels address Emi as "Gabriel"?
  • Comments: Well-crafted, subversive Self Insert Fic that is by turns touching and funny. A mostly Dead Fic — the most recent chapter was posted in early 2008 after a hiatus of a couple years, and another couple years seems likely before the next appears, but the author managed 13 chapters that carry the reader well toward the endgame of the series.
    • Sneebs: Realistic characterization and fascinating plot points make this a true gem. Hilarious and heartrending in turns, I give my utmost praises to Foxboy for writing himself into a fictional world in so believable a way. Highly recommended.
    • Dartz-IRL: One of the first Evangelion fanfics I read... sort of inspired me to give SI fanfics a go.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Another Self Insert Fic, Darker And Edgier.
  • Comments: Set after defeat of 14th angel, this fic has a Jerkass Stu as the protagonist, lots of violence and provides an example of Shoot The Shaggy Dog ending.
    • Nerdorama: So why are you recommending it?
      • 77.123.202.15: Because, despite its obvious flaws, I liked it. It is complete, very detailed and you don't have to read through same angels again. If any registered troper doesn't like the fic he/she can remove my entry, I won't post it again.
      • Nerdorama: Just asking. I'd have read it to see for myself, but, well, 30+ chapters.

New Perspective Evangelion by Dartz-IRL
  • Recommended by Looney Toons, Shay Guy, Willbyr
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: A young Irishman finds himself forceably inserted into the Evangelion world — by being forceably inserted into the brain and body of Noriko Nagato, a 14-year-old Japanese girl who has "miraculously" survived a plane crash, only to discover she is now the Fourth Child. But how did he get there? What did that weird dream with Kaoru Nagisa mean? Why are the real Noriko's memories coming back? And just what is up with the delusional girl in school who thinks she's Haruhi Suzumiya?
  • Comments: An interesting and realistic look at an insert, starting with language (the protagonist speaks only English and Gratuitous Japanese — both with a Gaelic accent — at the start of the story) and moving on from there. Although "Noriko" discovers she enjoys piloting, the male mind within the girl starts adapting too well; as the real Noriko's memories begin filtering back, he starts worrying about fading away into her returning personality. Although there are some amusing parts, this is not a comedy. In fact, it's very serious, almost borderline dark. Incomplete at this point but worth a read.
    • Shay Guy: The only criticism I have is that the references can get a little too blatant. Aside from the name "Noriko Nagato," the plane crash was an Oceanic Airlines flight, and the airline is apparently run by one John Locke. Slightly excessive.
    • Looney Toons: Well, we do appear to be still fairly early in the plot — the "Nagato" name clearly is intended to tie into things with the pseudo-Haruhi, although just what importance that holds for the story overall is unclear as of yet.
    • Nerdorama: And let's be fair to the author. There were only so many warships in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II.
    • Dartz-IRL: Are the people who wrote these allowed to answer? Anyway, it's both. It started as the Japanese battleship theme with Added Alliterative Name... I never thought of Haruhi until halfway through the fic. And yeah... it was a little excessive, but it's sort of an Author Appeal for me to do things like that. Besides, considering I once knew a Father Alexander Anderson in real life, I know such things happen regularly. Thanks for the feedback/recommendation folks... I'll try keep it going.

Alternate Universe Fic, Alternative Character Interpretation, Dark Fic, other Fanfic Tropes

The Second Child / Promises To Keep, by James Lee
  • Recommended by Cast
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "A story that runs in parallel with End of Evangelion. This is the Third Impact as experienced by the Second Child. Note: Official Final Draft finished 4/16/01."
  • Comments: A fanfic which drew a great deal of praise from the NGE fanfic community when it was first published, this is a classic of its time. Utilizing extensive literary references and allusions, the story crafts a very philosophical and poetic interpretation of Instrumentality from Asuka's pov, as she experiences her own visions, and inexplicably shares a few with Shinji. It even manages to utilize "Thanatos ~ If I Can't Be Yours" as a theme song by subtly using the lyrics in character's dialogue; perhaps the only example of how to do a song fic that works. The story begins to tilt towards a romantic pairing by the end when Asuka comes to grips with her relationship with Shinji. However, even though it's a major plot element in the conclusion, it's never to the degree that it becomes a shipping story, remaining focused on Asuka's psychological and emotional journey... until the epilogue. The author originally intended to end with the final scene of EOE, but wanted to give the series a more optimistic conclusion, and so provided a final chapter which is much more overt in its pairing. The story later spawned a sidequel from the author for Rei and Kaworu, The First Child / Before I Sleep. It should be noted that the original Geo Cities account included font formatting, and images culled from screen captures and fan art, to add to the mood, but none of this is carried over to the ff.net account, or archived version on archived.org.

I Knew Him When by Adam Kadmon
  • Recommended by Fitz, Nabi
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Post-Third Impact. A doctor from the military is interviewing the surviving Evangelion pilots and their acquaintances. Extremely depressing.
  • Comments: This definitely fits into the Dark Fic spectrum. Don't read if you enjoy happy endings.
    • Willbyr: Wow...just...wow. Calling this a Dark Fic is the epitome of Understatement. Its exploration of the characters' psyches is unrelentingly harsh (especially Shinji and Asuka), but makes sense in the story's context and makes a good case for what the worst aspects of post-3I existence might be like. The author hints in his post-chapter notes that he isn't mentally / emotionally stable himself, so Unreliable Narrator may creep in, but his prose is strong and overall the story is very good.
      • Side note: All of the author's fics seem to be twisted Eva stories. The Second Other is truly horrifying.

A Throne of Bayonets by LVDB
  • Recommended by Fitz
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Another post-Third Impact continuation fic. With the world in ruins after Third Impact, Shinji and Asuka have to pick up the pieces of their own lives—and the rest of humanity's—in the middle of a really complicated political situation.
  • Comments: Not nearly as epic in scope as the one above, but plausibly explores the wider social consequences of everybody returning from being tanged. The ending is rather nice in a bittersweet sort of way.

The Children and the Fury by Andrew Aelfwine
  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A cry for justice summons a Fury to Tokyo-3, but after her work is done, the loneliness of a young boy calls out to her.
  • Comments: An odd little story, very Alternate Universe, strangely pleasant to read. Implied lemon, implied poly-shipping, very different.
    • Willbyr: Surreal, but compelling and touching.

And If That Don't Work? by Sunshine Temple
  • Recommended by Shay Guy, Willbyr
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: With enough gun, even an Angel can be destroyed, AT field and all, without an Eva. Of course, this tactic usually means wiping out a fair chunk of the surrounding area. And you definitely don't want your pilot and Operations Director getting caught in the blast. Nevertheless, with a proven alternative available, NERV's political position has changed big time. And Shinji? Well...
  • Comments: Four chapters are available now, which are each nearly 20,000 words long. Clever politics, clever combat tactics (possibly the most original Ramiel battle I've ever seen) and a very interesting twist on Shinji's life.
    • The two most interesting things about this fic are what happened to Shinji, and Misato, and the Azazel program. Other than those, the one thing that saves this fic in my eyes is the writing, which is superb (except for the random 2nd person scene, which makes no sense).
    • This is definitely the strangest NGE fic I've come across so far, but it's much better than I originally thought it would be based on the summary above. I'm very interested to see how the character twists play out as the story progresses. Also, I was intrigued by both Asuka and Kaji having "bookend Rei" moments with Shinju and Misako...apparently it runs in the family.

Unreal by Hotwire
  • Recommended by Operation Shoestring, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Welcome to Tokyo 3, 2018. This is not the Tokyo 3 you know. The angels never came. The Evas were never built. Nerv never existed. And, as Asuka Langley Soryu is discovering, something is wrong. Something is... missing.
  • Comments: Unreal is fic that is at once dark, but somehow still positive. It brilliantly explores the characters of Asuka and Gendo in great depth, the latter indirectly in a fashion I can't explain without spoiling the story. But suffice to say Unreal manages to be both chillingly creepy and heart warming without missing a beat.
    • Nerdorama: I love short fics, I love AUs, and I love characters actually being as smart as they're supposed to be. I thought the ending (whole second half really) was a tad rushed, but it's still an excellent fic full of excellent characterization and storytelling.
    • Willbyr: I agree that the latter half seems a little rushed, but overall I really liked this story. The characters were believable (I especially liked the treatment of Rei), the concept was skillfully handled, and the conclusion was WAFF-y but not syrupy.

The Case of Lorenz Kihl by Hotwire (Also available here)
  • Recommended by Operation Shoestring, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Third Impact reaches the man who started it all. It is time for the Chairman of SEELE to reap what he has sown.
  • Comments: A brilliant exploration of the man and motives behind SEELE.
    • Inkki Bookman: An excellent example of a short story with Lorenz Kihl receiving the reward that he had coming to him for all of his efforts and schemes.
    • Sneebs: excellent. Apocalyptic imagery ripped straight from the Revelation of Saint John makes this an excellent and intelligent exploration of the monster who pulls the strings of Instrumentality. Wonderful description and an excellent leshing out of what had been nothing more than a figmentary character. Highly recommended.
    • Willbyr: Imaginative, well-thought out, and quite horrifying.

The Gods Within by Scriviner
  • Recommended by Looney Toons
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Shy and introverted Asuka Langley Soryuu is finally coming to Tokyo-3 to join the secretive organization known as NERV, headed by Dr. Yui Ikari. Along the way she'll meet a boy her age named Shinji who has both confidence and powers far beyond those of mortal men — and she'll learn that she's far from ordinary herself.
  • Comments: Like so many great concepts, this is a Dead Fic; it has only three extant chapters, but what chapters! This is an amazing Else World in which the Children are not pilots but instead can manipulate quantum physics to do things that look like superpowers. Many, many things are different from canon, but according to the author all these differences stem back to a single change from the original timeline. Worth a look if you don't mind the frustration of yet another "might have been" fic.
    • Shay Guy: Making Asuka shy, introverted, and lacking of much of a figure is out there, but making her "best friend" an animatronic teddy bear (i.e., a doll) has to be Refuge In Audacity.
    • Nerdorama: Wasn't this supposed to be a sort-of Justice League fusion (hence the superpowers comment, I guess)? Regardless, everyone is out of character no matter who they're supposed to be.
    • Willbyr: I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would...very sad that it's dead.

Aoi by Random1377
  • Recommended by Inkki Bookman, Lavanya Six, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Shinji dies, Gendo's scenario goes out the window, and the lives of certain characters...I won't spoil it for you.
  • Comments: Anyone familiar with Random1377's work knows that the stories are good and boy are there twists in this one. If you are a fan of pairing characters so they have happy endings, this fic is so not for you.
    • Lavanya Six: That was good, but, Jesus Christ, Aoi is like the Anti-Fix Fic.
    • Willbyr: It's well written and does a good job of exploring how the characters would potentially be affected by Shinji's death, but calling this the NGE fic equivalent of Grave Of The Fireflies wouldn't be a misnomer.
    • Well, I'd say this story was written as a dare. "How much more fucked up can you make Eva?"

Eva-R by m0dus Productions
  • Recommended by Alaska Slim
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An alternate continuation scenario right after Tabris/Kawrou/ the 17th Angel attack where a 6th child and 6th Eva join the crew, bibilical references are taken more literally, and a new set of "artifical" angels have become the new foe.
  • Comments: A fic put in a described "script" format where the setting is described before the dialogue begins. It also has two conclusions representing the "series" and "film" endings as the writers see it. It is made by a large coalition of fans whose work is not limited to just writing, but also original artwork, music, and even a video featuring CGI work and Tiffany Grant, Asuka Langley Soryu's English voice actress. How exactly this fic has escaped mention until now is baffling to this troper.
    • Universalperson: Because it's rather BAD. The OCs are thankfully NOT Mary-Sues, but are rather pointless, and the authors were under certain misconceptions about Evangelion. Finally, Tiffany Grant does not understand Asuka. Not even her Japanese voice actor understood Asuka.
      • Alaska Slim: Granted, this troper himself noted flaws in the story, such as Toji's Arm, and Shinji's dislike of trains, however, it's far above average, and has far more work put into it period, then nearly every single other fic listed here. As to Ms. Grant, Your Mileage May Vary, but what is fact is that she added onto a key trait of Asuka's persona, her German, which was lacking in the original dub.
    • Willbyr: Overall, I'd say that Eva-R is definitely worth a read, but isn't the best work in this list in terms of being a coherent way to expand the canon story. Where it definitely succeeds is in making the reader care about the new characters and their stories and interactions with the canon cast. I also liked the script format, but it could stand to have some tweaking in terms of how lines are written and where some setting descriptions fall in relation to the dialogue that goes with them. The artwork bounces back and forth between almost as good as the original and very amateurish; I didn't pay any attention to the music or other content.
    • Nivenus: I third this recommendation. The fic has some serious flaws (such as the author not actually understanding basic screenwriting techniques) but it's overall pretty well-written, with an interesting story, naturalistic character evolution (yes, Shinji and Asuka are eventually shipped, but it comes off in an unforced manner to me and Rei isn't abandoned or marginalized - quite the opposite), and some excellent production values. Also, while Lyn might seem like a boring, unnecessarily close to Shinji addition to the cast, Aoi is a unique character who's just as interesting as the original cast (in my opinion). Tenkei's got his moments too. Worst parts? The bad formatting, slow beginning, and dull characterization of Lyn for much of the series. Best parts? That the canon characters seem like themselves (with a few exceptions), the ending is fairly satisfying, and the other O Cs besides Lyn are pretty interesting.

Evangelion: Redemption by Alex Voutsis
  • Recommended by Lavanya Six
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Branching off of Episode 52 of Eva-R PRIME, Evangelion: Redemption was written in a long gap between Eva-R PRIME updates as an alternative continuation of its events. Following Asuka's decision to remain in Tokyo-3 after recent troubling events, she and Shinji participate in a strange synchronization experiment that has far-reaching consequences. Rei and her adopted son Tenkei face the impending judgment of Commander Ikari. In the United States, a secret government agency, acting under the behest of SEELE, prepares to unleash its own weaponized Unit-04 upon NERV and UN Synaps. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, a traitor in SEELE's inner circle initiates a plot that while shake the world to its foundations... but to what end?
  • Comments: Yes, it's a fanfic of a fanfic of fanfic. But. It. Is. Amazing. Evangelion: Redemption is my personal favorite Evangelion fanfic. It's a script fic, yes, in every part besides the prologue and epilogue, but it avoids many of Eva-R's flaws. There's less dead space in dialogue and O Cs such as Lyn are further developed. The battle scenes are also extraordinary. While there are only three or four fights in the whole story, they're well-rendered and thrilling to read. The fight between Unit-04 and Unit-00 in particular is just one long Crowning Moment Of Awesome for Rei Ayanami. The Asuka/Shinji romance is also developed at length and comes across as totally believable. The Journey To The Center Of The Mind arc in the middle of the fic is very well done. I give this my highest possible recommendation.
    • Willbyr: This is a stellar fic and is as good as, if not better than, either of Eva-R's other conclusions.

  • Synopsis: Gendo goes into Unit 01 instead of Yui, causing the overall Eva story to proceed in ways both familiar and vastly different.
  • Comments: The story has done a very good job of taking the core story and adapting it to having Yui around as an actual character. Many characters are still more or less the same, while others have changed in ways both minor and major. I've gotten in touch with the author, and updates are not likely anytime in the foreseeable future...which is a shame, as the last chapter essentially leaves the fic ending on several massive Cliff Hangers, and the ramifications of "Gendo-sama" aren't really addressed, outside of what happens at the end of the fight with Sachiel.

The Way Out is Through, by Ovrboost
  • Recommended by: Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A Dark Fic in which Shinji and Asuka get separated from each other shortly after the beach scene, and eventually reunite in decidedly harsh circumstances.
  • Comments: This story was written by a soldier stationed in Iraq, and does a good job of depicting what post-3I life might degenerate into for the people that got un-Tanged. Some elements smell of Deus Ex Machina and I don't know if the way that Asuka is portrayed will sit well with readers, but overall the writing is strong and the story is compelling.

EVANGELION: RE-TAKE (Explicit Content)
  • Recommended by Nerdorama, Clendy82, Irothtin, Willbyr, Kryptik
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Shinji/Asuka (also contains brief but awesome Misato/Kaji romance)
  • Synopsis: A Peggy Sue story in which, after the events of End of Evangelion, Shinji finds himself back at NERV a few days before the battle with Bardiel, and determines to Set Right What Once Went Wrong. The major twist: while he repairs his relationship with Asuka in this rewound world, he's being haunted by visions of post-3I Asuka, who is very bitter about her fate and knows a lot more about what's happened to Shinji than he does.
  • Comments: I'll subvert Or So I Heard here, and recommend the Doujinshi Evangelion: Re-Take, for everyone over the age of 18 who doesn't mind explicit (heterosexual) content. Yeah, it's Hentai, but outside of a few such middling-quality scenes, it's excellent Original Flavor and a nice Deconstruction of a lot of Fan Fic tropes, while still not being as depressing as the show itself. It's also one of the few fanworks I've ever seen with its own soundtrack. Look it up if you're legal.
    • Clendy82: Concurred. Aside from a few nude scenes which plummet in prominence after the first 1 1/2 volumes, this is a masterpiece in Original Flavor. Aside from the slightly more mature main character who drives the story (which is completely justified in storyline terms), every characterization is nothing less than perfect. You would believe this to be the perfectly logical, if slightly more heartwarming, follow-up to the series. There is still plenty of Mind Screwing, violence, and angst for the traditional fans; it's just that here, it actually goes somewhere. Pretty much the entire final volume is a giant Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming. Just make sure you clear away any dust before reading; this troper kept getting something in his eye. Again, if you do not mind the sight of a few pages of line art nudity, give this one a try. Highest possible recommendation.
    • Nerdorama: An all-ages version with additional scenes appears to exist now, but I personally haven't been able to find a translation.
    • Sneebs: Excellence. Bold illustrations and surprisingly canny writing make this worth reading, in spite of the lurid smuttishness of some earlier scenes. Realistic character development and genuinely moving story-telling actually brought tears to my eyes. The closest fan-fiction shall ever come to literature.
    • Willbyr: All-around excellence. The hentai material, while explicit, is mostly integrated into the story in a sensible manner and is actually key to one of the major storylines. My only quibbles are that the first Rei's handling of the changes in Shinji just don't seem right, and Asuka remembering the harpies' destruction of Unit 02 as her being gang-raped by them was the one explicit scene that I felt was truly gratuitous and over-the-top. The links I used to read the English translation are dead, but torrents can be found.
      • A new link has been posted.
    • Kryptik: All I can add to the gushing previous tropers have already offered is that I'd never thought I'd weep so openly at two words: "Anta baka?"

The Lifespan of a Love Affair by Random1377
  • Recommended by Extraintrovert
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Misato/Shinji
  • Synopsis: A delightfully disturbing interpretation of one of the NGE fandom's most popular pairings (fourth, by my reckoning).
  • Comments: In both following the plot and retaining the theme and ambiance of the series, it is pessimistic and dismal and virtually every decision results in It Got Worse, with the intermittent moments of happiness and hope all the more powerful as a result. That does not mean a happy ending, though. Y'all have been warned.

  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Shinji/Rei and Ritsuko/Gendo
  • Synopsis: Follows the overall second half of the canon story and EoE, with some changes both major and minor to events and character interactions, and spinning a completely new conclusion.
  • Comments: This is one of the best Shinji/Rei stories. It also gets into the Ritsuko/Gendo relationship only mentioned in passing on the TV series itself and shows how the couples are twisted mirrors of each other. As well, it puts a decidedly eerie and sinister spin on the relationship between Rei and Kaworu.
    • Sneebs: Interesting and well-written if somewhat trite piece. Shinji and Rei are intriguing to read, but Gendo lingers painfully close to a Complete Monster. Worth reading, although not the crown jewel of Eva fanfiction.
    • Another good read from Random1377, although I was a little confused as to what exactly was going on at the very end. The Ritsuko/Gendo material might seem a little over the top, but I never thought that it was completely unbelievable.

  • Pairings:
  • Synopsis: A 65-page fanfic where the love triangle between Gendo Rokubungi, Yui Ikari, and Kozo Fuyutsuki is explored from its start in 1999 up to the Second Impact.
  • Comments: It's written so that each of the 65 chapters is only one page long (thus the title). One of the few Gendo/Yui fanfics out there.

When She Smiles by Fresh C
  • Recommended by Fitz
  • Pairings: Asuka/Shinji
  • Synopsis: Shinji visits Asuka in the hospital
  • Comments: Apparently intended originally as a one-shot, and perhaps would have been better if it remained that way. The first chapter is excellent and should be read at first as a separate story. The remainder is still quite good, however.

Changing Seasons by JErosion (Lemon)
  • Recomended by Crazael, X Shouldve Died, Willbyr
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Pairings: Shinji/Hikari, shades and overtures of Hikari/Rei, Shinji/Asuka, Shinji/Rei, Ritsuko/Kaji
  • Synopsis: (From FF.net) After a few awkward moments after school Shinji Ikari begins to reevaluate himself, and looks to the possiblity that he can have more than just Eva in his life.
  • Comments: One of the more plausible Sx H fics out there, with only minimal changes to the characters to allow the relationship to form, the most significant change to either one is Shinji remembering the last bit of true advice his father gave him: "Shinji, you've got to stand on your own two feet, and learn to walk on your own". Especially notable in that Asuka does not approve in the slightest and tries to tempt Shinji. Warning: lemony content in the later chapters.
    • An entertaining, if not gripping, fic that seems to be trying to buck the usual One True Pairing shlock that so often permeates this kind of writing. In particular Ritsuko's reaction to her little complication and Hikari being gay for Rei get some big thumbs up.
  • dualshock71: Okay, this one was being optimistic in his original comment. It has plot holes. In fact, he's forced to re-write bits of it thanks to a serious case of "Dear God, what the Hell?" And spelling is still a problem. And this is all in the first chapter.
    • Crazael: Never said it was the greatest thing out there, only that it's more plausible than most nonstandard pairing fics. As well as having, for its faults in spelling and grammar, excellent characterizations.
      • Willbyr: I have to agree. The characterizations are spot on, and the deviations that do happen flow naturally and work very well in the context of the story, as do the aforementioned relationship twists. I also liked how seamlessly material from the manga was worked in. The myriad grammar and spelling problems are my only real complaint; there were several times that I had to go back and re-read something to make it make sense.

Nightshift by CFX, The Tygre (Explicit Content)
  • Recommended by FLCNPNCH
  • Pairings: Shinji x Pretty much every female character and some (well-made) AC Cs
  • Synopsis: A series of unconnected viginettes about Shinji and love. Shinji gets with a different girl every chapter. Angst ensues.
  • Comments: extremely well-written. I cannot stress that enough. Sure, there's sex, but it's usually a plot point (see the Misato chapter). The real selling point for me, however, is the angst — I'm normally repelled by angst (of that magnitude), but...jeez, it's so damn well done. And don't be put off by the AC Cs — they're all fully characterized and likable.
    • Adult FF.net is mostly for recreational purposes (or, so I've heard...), so I was rather surprised by the depth and complexity of these stories. Truly, a beautiful piece of work. I myself found the ending of the Misato chapter to be a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming.

Altered Destinies by Mike313 (AU, Age Regression, Cheerful)
  • Recommended by The Tygre, Chuckg
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Shinji x Misato
  • Synopsis: Through random Deus Ex Machina goodness, Misato is reverted back to fourteen, designating her as the Fourth Child. Now a viable option, she and Shinji grow...closer, like you don't know what that means. All the while, the universe is shifted around, and Shinji is given a new reason to pilot the Eva; to protect Misato at all costs from the Eva's corrupting influence.
  • Comments: I'm gonna' be honest here. The writing is kind of choppy, but damn if it doesn't go fast and keep you addicted. This troper has ADHD friends who sat down long enough to finish this story. Further, if you don't like cheerful, just move along. This story still has the same foreboding sense of doom and approaching Armageddon as all Eva, but toned down. Every chapter ends with some form of hilarious Omake. The very end is just epic. And the last chapter...the reason I recommend this story is because of the last chapter. The last chapter made me CRY. Warm, quick, and just overall uplifting, this more-plausible-than-it-sounds novella is definitely worth any reader's time.

Together We Stand, Divided We Fall, and Carpe Diem by Hotwire (AU, Cheerful)
  • Recommended by Chuckg
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Shinji x Hikari, some Misato x Kagi
  • Synopsis: Hikari happens to overhear a remark from Shinji that he's forced to pilot the Eva the day he's "outed" as a pilot, and this worries her enough that she takes it upon herself to make sure he's all right. This leads to her crushing on Shinji instead of Touji, which leads to dating, which leads to... everything. The author's stated intent is to explore the Butterfly Effect of one little change and what it can lead to, and what it can't lead to. Things go better for some people, worse for others, don't change for the rest.
  • Comments: Its not an immortal classic like some other recs here, but it is quite good. Well-written, plausible dialogue, believable characterization (both canon and alternate interpretation), no self-inserts, author avatars, or canon sues, and a nice PG-13 romance. The entire point of the fic is to explore all the possible ramifications of "What if somebody just gave Shinji a damn hug?", and even though many bad things still happen to all parties involved, its still a good experience for the reader overall. WAFF-y but still realistic. The people who will find it hardest to suffer through are Asuka fans, as one of the Butterfly Effect changes are that Asuka loses both Shinji and Hikari as possible sources of emotional support which means that she has the hardest journey of them all. However, if you can make it to the end she does get a happy ending, its not an Asuka hatefic. I won't spoil who lives and who dies, except that its not all the same people as canon. I will say that even those who die in this fic don't die alone, or in despair, and that makes all the difference.
    • Willbyr: Definitely worth a read. It's a noticeably different spin on a Shinji/Hikari dynamic than that presented in Changing Seasons, but is just as interesting (and if lemon isn't your thing, then this is definitely the one you'll want to read). I also like that the author takes time to explain his reasoning for some of the changes at the end of the chapters.

Once More With Feeling by Crazy-88
  • Recommended by Guessmyname, Looney Toons, Chuckg, Willbyr
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: A Peggy Sue style affair where Shinji scoots back to very beginning and also has a spine inserted somewhere along the way.
  • Pairings: Shinji x Asuka
  • Comments:
    • Looney Toons: A lot of fun, and has numerous Crowning Moments of Awesome, Funny and Touching. One of my favorite bits is Rei, after a makeover, deciding to "calibrate" her effect on teenage boys by completely wowing Aida and a shopful of gamer geeks.
    • Nerdorama: Was surprised and happy to see this still updating. Wonderful characterization and WAFF, rather snail-esque pacing.
    • Chuckg: This Troper's normal feelings towards Asuka wander back and forth between pity and loathing. Never before has there been actual affection... except for the Asuka in this fic, who is believably portrayed while still being infinitely more likeable. And she's hardly the only person with wonderful characterization here.
    • Sneebs: An excellent entry worth your time. The after-effects of Intrumentality send him back in time to fix his past. A wonderfully optimistic What If scenario that warmed my cynical little heart.
    • Did anyone else catch the shout outs to Shinji and 40k?
      • Looney Toons: Like the ones all through the Rei scene I mentioned above, ending with the Ork warboss figure winking at her...
    • Willbyr: This was a true joy to read, and while I enjoyed The Second Try, I'd seriously recommend this first. The writing and prose succeed where Variations on a Theme fails by being very descriptive but not overly dense, having characterizations that stay true to canon but expand in ways that seem completely natural, giving the characters believable dialogue, and a basic plot that, of all the Peggy Sue fics on this page, makes the most sense from an "in universe" perspective. I loved the S&WH40K material...actually, all of the material that focuses on Rei is a CMOA.
    • This and Higher Learning are the only Eva fics with a Peggy Sue element I can stand. In Higher Learning, it's the angle of approach— who goes back: Not a member of the main cast, but a descendant. In Once More..., it's recognition— this is still Shinji, this is still Asuka. Shinji's "back bone" is not so much "Took A Level In Badass" as it is Lets Get Dangerous born of the desperate need not to see the hell he's gone through happen again. And Rei— there are very few fics that creditably get her past her cannon status. This is one of them. —EddieCurrent
    • This is an excellent fic and definitely worth your time, but there are a few problems. Shinji's sudden acquisition of Deadpan Snarker powers can occasionally be grating, the Asuka/Shinji shipping in later chapters can be a bit much at times, and Gendo is painfully close to a Complete Monster. Still worth a look, but just something to keep in mind. -Sporkaganza

Orchestrating the Silence by Serial Ravist.
  • Recommended by Born In 1142, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Shinji and Asuka, the only survivors of Third Impact, must learn to live by themselves in the ruined world.
  • Pairings: Shinji x Asuka
  • Comments: I've started and given up on a lot of those typical post-EoE fics, but this one was better than any of them. The viewpoint alternates between Asuka and Shinji between chapters. One of the best I've read, reconstructs the characters we know with excellent prose and develops them believably beyond that.
    • Willbyr — The author does a fantastic job of getting inside both Shinji and Asuka's heads; bouncing back and forth between their first-person narration never falters and keeps them very much in character. The story handles their post-3I behaviors and life in a manner that is noticeably different than that presented in The Second Try but is entirely plausible, and arguably more "realistic" than in that story.

An Unwilling Angel by Ryan Xavier
  • Recommended by Nitramy, Willbyr
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Shinji x Rei
  • Synopsis: One event during an Angel battle changes EVERYTHING.
  • Comments: This and ShinjiAndWarhammer40K are my two favorite Evangelion fanfics ever, for staying as true to the source as much as possible. Also, a hilarious musical number, everyone staying in character as much as possible, and some of the best dramatic-but-not-overblown, romantic-but-not-explicit, comedic-but-not-satirical scenes ever done.
    • Willbyr: Aside from the ending being a bit cheesy in parts and the author pulling a shipping change that I would never find plausible ( Asuka x Toji), the overall story is solid and does a good job of making a Shinji/Rei scenario work, much better than VoaT.

Variations on a Theme (Borderline Lemon content in the middle)
  • Recommended by Libita
  • Status: Dead (last updated in 1999)
  • Pairings: Shinji/Rei (for the time being), Asuka/Hikari (possibly)
  • Synopsis: The story picks up after episode 20, i. e. after Shinji getting absorbed by his Eva. You have to read it to believe it: the 700 pages span over the course of 2-3 days and have no time skips, close to having the story progress in real time. The story comes highly-philosophical and thoughtful and stretches multiple genres like Drama, Comedy, Romance etc. What changes occur to the original storyline are created through the dynamics between — and in — the characters. It's a masterpiece, but sadly, it's unfinished.
    • Shay Guy: Geocities is dying. Need another link.
    • Willbyr: I can't recommend this one. The story is more-or-less sound, and I liked the changes that were made to the scenario of the big reveals in NERV headquarters, but there is way, way, way too much talking, and I just couldn't imagine the characters actually having the kinds of conversations and using the kinds of dialogue that they were using. Also, there was something very off-putting (and at times Squick-inducing) about the interactions between Rei and Shinji, and Asuka's portrayal as a self-Woobie-ing (better trope description?) doom-sayer was very OOC and a little irritating.

  • Recommended by jaimeastorga2000, Crazael

  • Pairing(s): Shinji/Asuka, Shinji/Rei, Shinji/Kaworu, & Toji/Hikari.
  • Synopsis: The fic follows Shinji Ikari from the middle to the end of the series (including The Movie) as he tries to figure out which of his two fellow pilots he would rather spend his life with.
  • Comments: Excellent emotional writing and absolutely brilliant character interactions and dialogue. Stick to the text files; the html versions have intrusive pictures which detract from the experience. Also, Rei is OCC, but it is necessary to start the divergence from the series and make her a rival to Asuka throughout the fic.
    • Crazael: Your Mileage May Vary, I actually think the pics and formatting in the HTML version make for a better read.
    • Willbyr: If you read this through the fanfiction.net link, "Visions" is listed as a side story but is actually a prologue and should probably be read first, as it establishes why Rei is OOC. From the main link, "Visions" is the first link provided.

  • Pairings: Shinji x Asuka
  • Comments: The story was written for the porn. It's a porn story, pure and simple. But at the same time, it handles the characters really well (and keeps them perfectly in character) while also handling the adolescent sexual awakening aspect realistically. Overall, a great short read.

Water Hazard by T. L. Webb, also known as Hotwire (Lemon, Sidestory of a Completed Fic)
  • Recommended by jaimeastorga2000
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairing(s): Asuka/Shinji
  • Synopsis: After Shiji nearly drowns, Asuka leads the two of them on a trip to a hot spring resort so she can teach him how to swim. Takes place after the third impact. This lemon is actually a sidestory to a fic called Wake by the same author; however, I am only recommending Water Hazard here because it stands head and shoulders above its parent fic and can be readily ennjoyed without having read Wake.
  • Comments: Great atmosphere building and well-handled romance. The sex doesn't seem contrived or forced, as many lemons are wont to do, but instead feels to naturally grow out of the story and situation, with a lot of nice fun and the right splash of romance added for spice. Truly a well-crafted piece of writing.
    • Willbyr: Not bad, although I think reading Wake would actually help make the overall story make more sense, as Water Hazard doesn't address how Shinji and Asuka got to where they are at the start. Wake isn't as bad as it's made out to be, although it's definitely not in the league of The Second Try or Orchestrating the Silence.
      • jaimeastorga2000: I think it's easy enough to infer that Asuka and Shinji have been living together since the last scene in End of Eva, and they are just in the middle of a normal day in their new lives when the fic opens. Yes, it doesn't explain how they got over whatever issues, if any, they would have with each other once the strangling was done and they began talking with each other, but one can just assumed they figured it out and returned to some kind of "normal" relationship (for a sufficiently loose definition of "normal;" this is Evangelion we are talking about after all). Wake's attempt to detail these parts, IMO, failed badly.

In the Case of Asuka Langley Sohryu by Da Games Elite (AU, Lighter And Softer)
  • Recommended by K 9 Thefirst 1
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Asuka/Shinji, Rei/Kaworu
  • Synopsis: In an attempt to boost the children's sync tests, Ritsuko carts the pilots off to a psychologist. Asuka is vainly against the idea, but slowly learns things about herself and the world around her.
  • Comments: An AU from Asuka's perspective, and for most of the story stays pretty accurate with the anime. Well, except for the fact that There ARE therapists. Oh! And the Children, NERV and the Angels team up starting when Arael mind rapes Asuka, which leads to the averting of a lot of the bad things that happened in The End, especially Third Impact. May not be the kind of thing an NGE fan may be used to, it might not be as good as most of the other entries here, but can certainly be a good pick me up for those who have a taste for sugar and wished for a less bittersweet end to the series, as well as a way to ease into the show.
    • Shay Guy: Contested on the grounds that things stop being interesting once Asuka's mostly worked through her issues. And teaming up with the Angels didn't make a whole lot of sense.
    • Sneebs: Interesting and lighter than the original series, this entry falls apart once the fourteenth chapter is reached. The character development (like so many Eva fanfics) allows the characters to become happier over time due to a positive change in their lives. Kaworu as the exposition fiary in chapter 14 was a real nosedive in quality. Dammit, why could't the author have tried to not rush things towards a happy ending!?
