Double Trouble by kellemarine

  • Recommended by Pumpkin Lore
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with The Nightmare Before Christmas.
  • Synopsis: Everyone knows what happened when Sirius fell through the veil. What if something different happened to Harry? Harry ends up in Halloween Town where he meets Jack Skellington. Things change forever for Harry and Jack and nothing will ever be the same. Set 7 ½ years after the Christmas fiasco and immediately after the Ministry battle in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
  • Comments: I have to say, I was not expecting this to be any good (as much as I love crossovers, sadly most Fan Fic crossovers are lacking). While some things seem to be Hand Waves or possibly even complete Ass Pulls, depending on how you look at it, the story is quite good, and everything makes sense if you can take some Acceptable Breaks from Canon (like Harry and, according to the author notes, Sirius surviving the fall through the veil). The fic has yet to be completed. *goes to bug the author to write more already review the fic* —Pumpkin Lore

Of Ogres and Kings by Snargaluff Pod

  • Recommended by N8han11
  • Crossover with: Shrek
  • Status: Dead (last updated January 2017)
  • Synopsis: When King Harold suddenly croaks, Shrek learns he will have to rule the land of Far, Far Away, unless he can find a suitable heir to the throne. The most-promising candidate is Fiona's first cousin once removed, Harry. Along with Donkey and Puss in Boots, Shrek sets out to bring Harry back with them, but doing so is a bigger challenge, and a tad more magical, than they expected.
  • Comments: Basically, this charming fic is what would happen if Princess Fiona's cousin happened to be Harry Potter. Everyone appears to be in character, and while the story hasn't quite begun yet, it's still better written than the actual Shrek the Third.

12 Moves Sideways by Silver Pard
  • Recommended by: Aimsme, rewindreplayrepeat, feral, Fenro, VashTi, Urbandshi
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: Death Note
  • Synopsis: After the Yotsuba Arc, Light becomes the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Harry decides he needs watching. Oneshot
  • Comments: Despite being short compared to most of the others on this list, 12 Moves Sideways packs a powerful punch. It's beautiful, almost wistful, with hints of something darker—it might just be because this Troper is a Light fan, but her heart broke at the Erised scene.
    • Really wonderful, everything I could ask for in a fic. It is a Death Note fic, though, more than a Harry Potter one.

  • Recommended by: Crown Clown, Pastykake

  • Synopsis: Voldemort's return has caught the attention of more than the Order of the Phoenix. The Spirit World's best are on the case, but can they handle Hogwarts (or Harry) without blowing their cover?
  • Comments: One of the best (and longest-running) Harry Potter crossover fics out there. Well-written and better plotted, with fun insights into its view-point characters, this series is one of the crowning jewels of crossover Fan Fic. —Crown Clown

Bizarre School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by AliceYouWereHere

  • Crossover with: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Recommended by: Agent_B
  • Status: Dead (last updated July 2017)
  • Synopsis: A power-granting bow and arrow, Stands, and immovable objects... Being born into the bloodline of the most bizarre family on the planet, however, meant that his life was destined for insanity. He just didn't know it yet.

Black Sky by Umei no Mai ()

  • Recommended by: Beta-Orionis, Dame-Amaryllis, eeveelutionlover2000
  • Crossover with: Reborn! (2004)
  • Status:
  • Synopsis: When you're a Black, you're a Black and nobody gets to hold all the cards except you. Not a Dark Lord with a grudge, not a Headmaster with a prophecy and certainly not the world's most influential Mafia Family... Dorea is as much a Black as a Potter and she is not about to let anybody walk over her! A Fem!Harry story. Slow Build.
  • Comments: The Author manages to blend the two worlds together very well, though it is currently focusing more on the 'Harry Potter' side right now seeing as Xanxus is frozen in ice. However the author still gives us looks at what is going on from the point of view of the other characters, although it is told in third-person. Umei no Mai has done a wonderful job with her world building and fusing story elements such as the concept of Flames and what they are and how they operate with/against magic. The characters are well developed and their actions make sense without them coming across as one-dimensional. You also don't need to know much about either story to read it, so I recommend it to everyone to at least try, even if long stories aren't your thing.

Bleached by bluminous8

  • Recommended by: Magic Kirby
  • Crossover with: Bleach
  • Status: Dead; last updated May 28, 2010
  • Synopsis: AU- It seems that even in Death Harry is never given a break. His soul ends up in Rokungai where his past prevents him from moving forward. Will he learn to let go?
  • Comments: Harry/Yourichi pairing, A Shinigami!Harry that isn't a purely Kido fighter. The author has several other highly recommended stories on this site.

Cerulean Silver vs Amber Gold by hikaranko (Ao3 Link)

  • Recommended by: eagle108
  • Crossover with: Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Status: Dead; last updated August 31st, 2016
  • Pairing(s): Draco/Hermione
  • Synopsis: Edward Elric gets assigned ...to babysitting Draco Malfoy, at the request of the British Ministry of Magic. While Ed considers the assignment stupid, having to spend an entire year undercover as a student at Hogwarts, there's a lot more than what he was told during briefing.
  • Comments: Excellently written, spot-on characterization, even with the deviations in the HP world. While the gradually built Draco/Hermione romance occurs in the background rather subtly to Ed's interactions with the HP cast as the main focus, it nonetheless has a strong and supportive impact in a whole to the story. Shades of Draco in Leather Pants is featured, but it's done quite tastefully. Ed here has a few "magic doesn't exist/magic breaks the laws of alchemy" moments but it's far and few in between, and he does comes to explanations that could work between both verses.

Crosswinds of Fate by WayFarer2000

  • Recommended by Popthepuff, Kickerson, Pastykake
  • Crossover with Fate/stay night
  • Status:
  • Synopsis: "You should think of this as an opportunity to learn about a completely different method of applied thaumaturgy," Zelretch explained. He then sighed and lamented, "For shame, to be cursed with such an ungrateful apprentice..."
  • Comments: Crossovers between two magic world based universes tend to end in one getting bashed or using the other to turn into a shameless character destruction self-insert fic, particularly more so for many Fate and Harry Potter crossovers. Here, however, is something different. The characters are basically the same, set during the Order of the Phoenix for Harry Potter and 10 years after an end that is somewhat based off the UBW good end for denizens of the Fate 'verse. The story is well written and the characters aren't turned into something unrecognizable. There are a few bits that might seem off from the canon of either 'verse, naturally, but these don't do anything to demerit the story.
    • Furthermore, despite the fic not being a humour or a parody, the author can and has written in plenty of hilarious moments throughout the narrative.
    • Should be noted it's less of an action/adventure and more of an academic study/magical comparison fic so far, though that's no demerit to the story at all, which is still a good read. Nevertheless, some might find it a little odd that as far as plot development goes it hasn't progressed too much in its nearly 100,000 words at this point.

Death's Visage by Black-Raven3

  • Recommended by: Navllyk, feral, Urbandshi
  • Crossover with: Hellsing
  • Status: Dead; last updated September 24th, 2011
  • Synopsis: After Harry's 5th birthday, his true powers are unleashed, powers so dark that Dumbledore felt the need to bind them. Fleeing the Dursleys just before his 11th birthday, he seeks refuge with his family's ancestral allies, the Hellsings. DARK.
  • Comments: Contains Ron bashing, Depressed!Harry and Slytherin!Harry, but thankfully avoids Draco in Leather Pants.

Even the Wizards Must Pay their Due by Gamma Cavy (link)

  • Recommended by: Tiamat Dragon Queen
  • Crossover with: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Attempting legilimency on Edward Elric was a supremely bad idea, as it got Truth's attention, and now Ed's taken Harry home with him and Al. But the wizards refuse to believe that Harry is lost to them, and continue to search for Harry and the alchemist who kidnapped him. This story is now complete. Evil Dumbledore, and Brotherhood 'verse for FMA
  • Comments: Ed's narrative adds dry humor to everything, beginning with his wondering if Petunia is a failed Horse Chimera, and continuing into the Give Mustang a Headache Game. The plot is well thought out, Truth is awesome, and clearly up to something. Dumbledore is not only a Magnificent Bastard, but a Manipulative Bastard. Harry gets a loving family with two older brothers, a loving mother who will teach him how to defend himself, a silent but loving father, and a plethora of honorary family in the form of Team Mustang. Gamma actually figured out how Fullmetal Alchemist could take place in the same world as Harry Potter without anyone knowing about Amestris and all the neighboring countries, and it has a spark of originality in a crossover that this troper hasn't seen since Laora's fic Penance. Bonus points for the fact that the Wizarding knew a little about Xerxes, although not as anything more than a myth, at least until Ed turns up, fitting the description of the golden people, AKA the Xerxesians.
    • I went into this story expecting the usual format for a Harry Potter crossover, Harry raised by someone else and wows the wizards with his alchemy, the usual. I suppose I should have known it was different from the title, but as it was I was pleasantly surprised to find out it wasn't.

Fictional by Dark Syaoran

  • Crossover with: Fate/stay night
  • Status: Dead; last updated September 21st, 2011

Find Me A White Knight Cloaked in Black by cwyscross

  • Crossover with: Naruto.
  • Status: Dead; last updated November 7th, 2011
  • Synopsis: When the civilians need something made or fixed in a hurry, they all know to go to the green-eyed foreigner. So it stands to reason that, sooner or later, ninjas would come knocking as well. Insanity ensues—they're messing with a Marauder, after all. But mostly, Hiei just wishes they would all leave him alone.
  • Comments: Set at the start of the Naruto series and long after Voldemort for Harry.

From His Excerpts by Phoenyxx

  • Recommended by: Thriaemis, Ghingahn, Robinton
  • Crossover with: Naruto
  • Status: Dead; last updated March 13th, 2013
  • Synopsis: Kakashi Hatake and his excerpts of the wizarding world. Hogwarts, ministry politics, Mangekyou Sharingan and...sparking school spirit? "Don't take me as alien! I know your politics." The wizards shared a look. "Alien as foreigner. Here. The-saurus says."
  • Comments: A frankly hilarious crossover where Kakashi is hired to act as Hogwarts' mediator and "spark school spirit" aka teamwork. It isn't long before the entire school hates him, but damn it all if they're not working together! Well-written, in-character and hilarious. I can definitely recommend this one. Even incomplete it's a great read.

The Girl Who Loved series by Darth Drafter

  • Recommended by: Chuckg, Looney Toons
  • Crossover with Sailor Moon and Ranma ½
  • Status:
  • Pairings: Harry/Usagi, Ranma/Shampoo
  • Status: Complete; Complete
  • Synopsis: Upon receiving some very disturbing news during the summer after his fifth year, Harry does a panicked accidental-magic Apparition straight to China, and falls directly in a Jusenkyo spring...a spring which one Usagi Tsukino had accidentally drowned in the year before. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Warnings: Brief discussion of (but no actual) m-preg; mild lemon in Chapter 9 of Violence Inherent In The System; some chapters of The Girl Who Loved have off-screen lesbian encounters which get a fair amount of discussion on-screen.
  • Comments: This started out as a crack fic and then rapidly developed an actual plot, complete with both Heartwarming and Awesome Moments. It's far, far better than it sounds, and I highly recommend. Also contains perhaps the only non-annoying appearance of Chibi-Usa I can remember seeing anywhere.

Harry and the Pirates by Technomad

  • Recommended by: Eoppen
  • Crossover with: Black Lagoon
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Harry Potter grew up in Roanapur, with his loving Aunt Petunia, his best friend/cousin Dudley, and the woman they all worked for, Balalaika! Until the day a mysterious visitor arrived with news that would change both boys' lives forever...
    • Comments: This story alternates between Hogwarts and Roanapur, and while there are a lot of changes, neither story overwhelms the other. Some of the boys' friends visit them at Roanapur, with unexpected results...
    • The story starts out decent enough I suppose. It takes a left turn at dropping everybody into Slytherin: Harry, Dudley, Ron, and Hermione. It starts to get absurd around Halloween though, what with Dudley firing an RPK machine gun and Harry lobbing 40mm grenades from an M-79 at the troll.

Harry Mewter by Alex Ultra

  • Recommended by: Schizo Technician, Doppelganger511, lindabhair, Giant Eye, Pastykake
  • Crossover with: Pokémon
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Late in his second year, Harry Potter takes an animagus potion. His animagus form is Mew. Hilarity Ensues as he discovers catnip, learns what his new form can do the hard way, and tries to find out what the hell he turns into, anyway. Gets a little more serious around the end of his fourth year.
  • Comments: Surprisingly well done, given how easy it would be to take this down the wrong road. Very little from Pokémon appears—no attack namesnote , no Poké Balls, nothing except animagus forms, without even any knowledge of what they are or do. Hilarious at times.
    • Doppelganger511: I second the recommendation. I usually loathe crossovers, but this one is fantastic. Definitely worth reading.

Harry Potter and the Digimon Frontier by Gemini Star01

  • Recommended by: Ananonymuscat, lindabhair
  • Crossover with Digimon Frontier.
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: For five years, the kids of Frontier have been training as Japanese wizards. Now they've got the chance to study abroad, in England of all places. But there are some odd things happening. Digimon...at Hogwarts?
  • Comments: Don't let the title fool you, inspired by The Best Defense, this is one of the most thought-out crossovers you are likely to find, everyone is in character, and the plot makes perfect sense.

Harry Potter and The Fullmetal Dragon by Dragon_Ferret

  • Crossover with: Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Recommended by: VictorioMWolff-Haddock
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Truth shenanigans, Ed gets called to destroy another immortal wannabe named Moldwarts or something, yadda yadda yadda Edward Elric is now a dragon. Not one o' those big majestic Fireballs or Horntails. No, he's tiny and pissed.

Nightshift at Hogwarts has gotten a little more interesting as Filch vows to catch a weird golden pest, house elves try to figure out how food keeps disappearing, and Pince wondering about how the library gets neater and neater with each day. At least, the painting, ghost, and animal population seems strangely amused.

Harry Potter and the Not-Fatal-At-All Cultural Exchange Program by Pale Wolf

  • Recommended by: Gentlemens Dame 883

  • Synopsis: A Holy Grail War is starting, but not as you think you know it. Seven Masters and their Servants converge on England to win the Grail. Mr. Potter throws his hat into the ring in an attempt to save Sirius Black. And since we're through the looking glass, watch out for the canon Nasuverse characters who aren't in the same place you might be expecting them.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Bleached Phoenix series by Eradona

  • Recommended by: kinglugia
  • Crossover with: Bleach
  • Status:
  • Pairings: Ichigo/Rukia, Toshiro/Karin
  • Synopsis: Due to an old Friendship between two meddling old men, Ichigo Kurosaki and Company end up at Hogwarts. The mission: protect Harry Potter! Primarily Bleach Characters interacting with the Wizarding World. Rating changed to M to be safe.
  • Comments: The story isn't bad at first, but the Bleach characters quickly become cliched, particularly Ichigo and his mother, and it only gets worse as it goes on. It's quite sad, as the story is otherwise good. To give an example, Ichigo's mother is inserted into the same year as Harry's parents, with heavy amounts of Remember the New Guy?, in addition to apparently being obscenely wealthy, the heir/a descendant to all four founders, the smartest witch in her generation, a metamorphmagus, and had a close relationship with everyone in the Potter cast. Due to being his mother's son, Ichigo inherits them all.

Harry Potter and the Secret Link by Capricious Purple Clarity

  • Recommended by: QuatreWinner
  • Crossover with Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Watch as Duo chips away at the very foundation of Hogwarts as he breaks down House walls, befriends Gryffs and Slyths alike, mugglfies Malfoys, and flushes cherry bombs down school toilets.
  • Comments: This fic is simply too much to adequately summarize without spoiling anything. Duo is completely in-character throughout this whole thing, and it's his character that "mugglefies Malfoys" et al. An alternate summary is "Duo Maxwell's unique brand of luck strikes again. Ron wants to keep him, even if he does have some weird obsession with flirting with Snape. Snape just wants to know where to bury the body." It's just... everyone's in character. The plot makes sense. I'm not really doing it justice, really. Just read it and see what I mean. It also has a sequel, Harry Potter and the Forgotten Heirs.
  • Warnings: Slash! There is the aforementioned Duo/Snape flirting, as well as 1x2, 3x4, and Harry/Draco.

  • Comments: Set in 1989, two years before Harry goes to Hogwarts. However, the canon of Ah! My Goddess is current to chapter 278, published in the fall of 2011.Also features a manipulative Dumbledore trying to get Harry back.

Herwald von Einzbern series by kyugan

  • Recommended by: Xamusel
  • Crossover with: Fate/stay night,
  • Status:
  • Synopsis:
    • Herwald von Einzbern and the Philosophers Stone: The 5th Heaven's Feel has been averted, with no apparent victor, but for Herwald von Einzbern, recently turned eleven, a whole new adventure is about to begin in a world he left behind ten years prior.
    • Herwald von Einzbern and the Chamber of Secrets: Herwald returns for his 2nd year of Magical Education. And all he has to deal with is centuries of prejudice, an incompetent DADA professor, an overeager House Elf and an ancient monster that's awoken hungry from it's 50 year slumber. No worries, right?
  • Comments: Kiritsugu adopts Harry shortly after he finishes a job that involves killing a Sealing Designate, Harry gets renamed Herwald, he becomes one of Ilya's little siblings (when Shirou enters the picture anyway), and he becomes an Alchemist that takes part in the Fifth Heaven's Feel... and later enrolls in Hogwarts because of his birth parents. The story is complete, and has a sequel up (missing only the epilogue), set during Harry's second year (link here), which shows that the author knows what he's talking about... even though Herwald is Slytherin in this series.

  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Synopsis: While investigating a bizarre alchemical structure, the Elric brothers get pulled into the Potterverse early on in an AU version of Deathly Hallows. In the interest of finding a way home, Ed lends his talents to the Horcrux hunt while Al finds ways to keep himself busy at Hogwarts. Better than it sounds.
  • Comments: This was the fic that originally got me interested in FMA. It doesn't measure up to fics like Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Future Past or Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness, but it's still an entertaining read. Seems to be a deadfic but the first half of the story is complete enough to enjoy as a stand-alone fic.
    • Rogue 7: Amusing and well-written, though, as stated above, not one of the best. Worth reading simply for how in-character Ed is.

Itachi and the Prisoner of Azkaban by Mistress Dragonflame

  • Recommended by: melloncollie
  • Crossover with: Naruto
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An Itachi-centric crossover with the Potterverse. While an ANBU captain, Itachi is called away to Britain on a mission as Harry Potter's covert bodyguard. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Comments: This fic could use a bit of polishing, but if you can overlook the numerous grammar and spelling errors there are a few genuinely touching moments brought on by the "what-could-have-been" aspect, and the sharp contrast between the relatively Lighter and Softer Potterverse and the violent, dystopic Narutoverse. However, most of the more exciting conflict seems to center around Itachi and the Narutoverse side of the crossover, and the conflicts on the Potterverse side are solved with relative ease. Most definitely a Fix Fic.

  • Comments: While the general outline of the story is nothing new (X character goes to Hogwarts alongside the Trio), this fic is written with a rarely seen deftness and sensitivity. Potterverse mages are not written as hopeless incompetents compared to Nanohaverse mages, but as being slightly behind the times, with their own valuable contributions. Characters stay in character (no bashing here!) and issues are handled thoughtfully. All in all, a wonderful fic.

Matou Shinji The Wizard by AlfheimWanderer

  • Recommended by Sallera, Green Chaos, The Giant Rock
  • Status:
  • Crossover with: Fate/stay night
  • Synopsis: Shinji gets a Hogwarts letter before his resentment has time to destroy him, and jumps at the chance of practicing even a 'lesser' craft as long as it means he isn't worthless. Away from his family, he might have the chance to become what he always wished for, but the moonlit world has its own interests at his new school, and discarded heir or not, he couldn't escape the politics of the world he grew up in even if he wished to. (First year hits the high points of the canon plot with a few additions, then events diverge significantly from second year on.)
  • Pairings: Harry/Daphne, Shinji/Luna
  • Comments: On the first year, a still-somewhat innocent Shinji contacts several people who significantly reshape his worldview and begins working out the hidden truth of the relations between the Wizarding World and the Clock Tower, though for the most part, it hits most of the high canon points. And then, at the climax of the second year, a frighteningly competent Gilderoy Lockhart says the one word that completely shatters everything.

  • Comments: a realistic take on what would really happen if the hp world with its pureblood supremacy/ bigotry had to deal with different types of magic-users. don't be put off by the bisexual polyamorous relationship warning; it's barely part of the story (which is 43k+ words already). It does contain mature content since it portrays child abuse, murder and mentions of genocide; but this merely makes the story more riveting. I highly recommend it because it provides a unique perspective on the hp world as well as the Department of Mysteries (and what it does) and fleshes out certain characters (Rex Raptor, Weevil Underwood, Keith Howard etc.). Even someone unfamiliar with yu-gi-oh should be able to follow the story.

  • Synopsis: In retrospect, Harry should've known that Umbridge's field trip to the ancient springs of Jusenkyo was an unmitigated disaster waiting to happen. Having fallen into the Springs of the Drowned Emo and Drowned Emu, Harry supposes he's luckier than, say, Snape (Spring of the Drowned Unicorn) or Ginny (Springs of the Drowned Pig and Homing Pigeon), but there are more problems in the upcoming year than just curses that have no known cure: Voldemort takes advantage of his own cursed form to infiltrate Hogwarts as Luna's new pet bunny and actively plots the demise of, well, everyone. And there's really no way to explain Lucius Malfoy, the benevolent Buddhist monk. (AU Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; Ranma 1/2 crossover) Features many minor characters with personalities – especially Daphne Greengrass and Blaise Zabini.
  • Comments: Minnionette does a fantastic job of taking an element of one series and fusing it with another near seamlessly. It's a lot like the above Harry Mewter in that only one Ranma 1/2 character shows up and only for one chapter, so no real knowledge of the series is needed. Minnionette has a true gift for character building, and thouroghly explores everyone's personalities and how they would deal with the bizarre situation they find themselves in. And it's all in character, which, to me, means the most. It's also guaranteed to have your sides splitting by the end of the first chapter.

  • Synopsis : What does it take to destroy something completely? Some would be fine with eradicating its soul. Others would argue that you must erase even the concept of the object from existence. AU with a notoriously complex Magic system.
  • Comments: This fan fic poses the idea that harry has a sharingan, and because of that changes the entire story and makes everything more badass Harry goes out fights and defeats voldermort with a sword in his first year then goes out collecting rare swords in his second year then in his fourth year joins a mage dueling contests and defeats dumbledore
    • Reads nicely, as can often be expected from the DLP crowd, but it's also targeted PURELY for a young male audience and despite being a young male myself, bits here and there made me eye-roll on multiple occasions. All in all, it was enjoyable and I will give this rec a tentative seconding. That being said, does this really belong in 'for want of a nail'? Most of canon is essentially thrown out the window here and it pulls elements directly from Naruto lore. Maybe general AU recs?

  • Crossover with Hellblazer
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: After interfering in a magical fight (armed with a half-brick in a sock), John Constantine finds himself in another world; a world where magic works differently, demons can't be summoned up, and children go to a magical school called Hogwarts. Luckily, he manages to strike a bargain with Albus Dumbledore, who has the following offer: He'll do everything in his power to help Constantine get back to his own world, if Constantine in the meantime takes the job as Defense against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts.
  • Comments: The story was written before Half-Blood Prince, and unfortunately, seems to be a Dead Fic... but the ten chapters that are up are really well done, with many clashes between Constantine and the HP world. Harry himself doesn't show up until chapter ten, but Constantine's attempts at figuring out Hogwarts and his interactions with the Hogwarts staff (and ghosts!) are thoroughly entertaining. Possibly the highlight of the story is the friendship that grows between Hagrid and Constantine — and Camwyn even gets Hagrid's accent right, a rarity in fanfic.

  • Recommended by: Milarqui, Looney Toons
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with the X-Men.
  • Pairings: Harry/Ginny, Scott/Jean, Ron/Luna, Neville/Hermione
  • Synopsis: After Dumbledore tells him the Prophecy, an angry Harry explodes (figuratively) and discovers he has a strange power, combining intangibility, invisibility, and teleportation. Going back to the Dursleys proves to be both a hindrance due to his depression and a chance to practice with his new powers. On the other side of the Atlantic, two powerful telepaths by the name of Charles Xavier and Jean Summers detect the appearance of a very powerful mutant in England... and Charles Xavier realises that he has to come clean on Jean's past.
  • Comments: The first thing the wonderful duo did was to tell readers the fanfic was Harry/Ginny. At first, it explores how Harry reacts to his new powers and how this affects the X-Men as Jean Summers discovers that she is Lily Evans' twin sister, adopts her nephew Harry and takes him to the X-Mansion. It then goes forward from that, passing over things such as the revelation of his mutant powers to the Order of the Phoenix, his going back to Hogwarts and how Voldemort plans to include the mutant community in the British Magical War. It includes a believable Manipulative!Dumbledore, Snape working more for Voldemort than Dumbledore (not on his own volition), a great (and funny) Wolverine, and, finally, a good development of a relationship between Harry and Ginny.
    • Looney Toons: Seconded. It's not great literature and we get a fair amount of Ron-bashing, which is a typical feature of Bobmin's work, but it's still a fun read.
  • Honestly this crossover is less than a fun read. The author has just about everybody extremely OOC. The X-Men have mysteriously disregarded their code of killing unless absolutely necessary. Harry is replaced with a hate driven psychopath.

Once the police gets involved, the Dursley adults are sent to jail. Harry is raised by a loving family. Now, at 23, he owns a company to rival Stark International. And he is very displeased that some group of guys is murdering entire villages. Or that another does nothing about it.
  • Comments: A lot of Dumbledore bashing. A bit of James and Lily bashing. For once, an unspoiled and talented Potter raised Child-Who-Lived. And a Voldemort who actually knows it is unwise to attack the Muggles (at least at first).

Harry Potter And The Invincible Technomage, by Clell 65619

  • Recommended by Chuckg, Looney Toons, Unclouded TJ, Comartemis, feral
  • Status: Dormant (last updated August 2018)
  • Crossover with: Marvel Universe.
  • Synopsis: A party of executives from Grunnings and their families are given a facilities tour of a factory as part of a joint project with an American firm. When the Dursleys die in an explosion, accidental magic lets Harry be the sole survivor. And when a young child shows visible superpowers on company property, the owner is called in, leading eventually to an 11-year-old Harry Stark attending Hogwarts...
  • Comments: The major appeal of this fic is seeing things go right for Harry without him being a God-Mode Sue. He has a loving father and virtually the entire Avengers for his extended family. He's self-confident and still heroic (he is in fact 'Pulse', the second auxiliary member of Power Pack alongside his best friend Franklin 'Tattletale' Richards). He has access to Dr. Strange and Agatha Harkness as magic tutors. So why is he still attending Hogwarts? Because Madame Web has told him (and only him) of the prophecy, and, well, a hero has to do what a hero has to do. And so a young Harry Potter whose "saving people thing" is now professional has arrived on-scene. And it was a Heartwarming Moment when you realized that the first person Harry helped save was Tony: adopting a small child in 1986 meant that Tony felt compelled to live a slightly more responsible lifestyle, so he never descended into alcoholism, and never lost his company the first time. And the Funny Moment when you find out what Tony always does to Harry's school projects... well, read for yourself. Other highlights include Tony forming an informal Hogwarts Parents Association, Harry introducing the student body to (magically-shielded) CD players and cell phones, and Ravenclaw!Harry attempting to design and build the first magical computer.
  • Warnings: Do you hate Manipulative!Dumbledore? He's in this one. Its the 'more arrogant and control-freaky than outright evil' incarnation, but still, Dumbles exists in this fic to get verbally smacked down by almost every magical person Tony can call in for support. Culminating in the scene where Thor has to 'explain' to the Wizengamot why overturning Harry's adoption by Tony Stark would be terminally unwise.
    • Comartemis: Troper hive mind strikes again. Manipulative!Dumbles is an irritation but for a fic this good he's worth dealing with. It's worth noting that this new Harry may have the appearance of a Marty Stu at first (his first encounter with Snape is likely to set off alarm bells but that's a pretty isolated incident) but ultimately proves himself innocent of that label. As mentioned above, this one does a lot of stuff that few other Potter fics do; Harry and Draco becoming Friendly Enemies is one of my personal favorites, along with a new twist on the fiasco with Riddle's diary. An excellent read even if you don't know anything about Iron Man or Marvel Comics in general, but having seen the movies will make the latest chapter even funnier than it already is: Sirius Black meets Robert Downey Jr? HEAD FOR THE HILLS!
    • Eddie Current: Credit to Clell here — this version of his pet Manipulative!Dumbledore does come across as more Well-Intentioned Extremist, but the characterization can still grate a bit. That said, much of the rest of the fic can alternate between bland, grating, and the occasional cool idea that gets lost in the shuffle.
    • Ancient Nonun: It's bad. So very bad. Flat characters that do nothing but carry the plot, completely unbalanced powers that only exist to show how awesome Marvel is, and everyone else becoming strawmen. The Wizarding World gets the treatment that Sasuke got in Chunin Examunapologetic bashing and exaggeration that leads straight into Character Derailment. Technomage has no drama, no tension, a mine field of plot holes and badly-used clichés, and no depth whatsoever. It's quite possibly the worst fic this troper has ever read. It's the Battlefield Earth of Harry Potter fanfiction. Be warned that even with the honest praises it gets, it can have very unexpected results.
    • Maki P I've skimmed through 8 chapters, and I have to say that Harry Stark is unbearable. He's arrogant, snotty, conceited, condescending, disrespectful, and just plain annoying; coupled with the aforementioned Manipulative!Dumbledore is impossible to read (Thor chewing the Wizegamot was pretty awesome thought). Also I hate the way he keeps dismissing the Potters, sure he never met them, but they sacrifice their lives for you, you ungrateful little bastard!
    • The Enmity Of Ages 1994: This fic varies in quality. While the HP characters are either evil, stupid, both (Dumbledore being the main victim of this) or Harry's willing minions, and are all strawmen, the author shows a deft writing touch when they get past their hatred of the Potterverse, with some good scenes with the Marvel characters. The main problem, however, is Harry. He's a Fixer Sue and so OOC it is unbelievable. I was skeptical when it turned out Doctor Strange, the most powerful wizard in the universe, can't get past an accidental magic shield set up by Harry, however this could be explained away with different types of magic etc. However I lost all confidence in it when I saw that Harry was not only a supergenius, but a wielder of chaos magic. The fic is essentially an Author Tract of the most irritating kind, interspersed with good scenes.
    • DrWillHatch45: This was one of the first fics I ever read, so there's a bit of nostalgia involved, but I really enjoyed this. Yes, it's a Fix Fic, and the author sure as hell exaggerates some of the underlying problems inherent in the Potterverse, but it's well written. One of the main appeals of this story for me is to show how ridiculous it is for wizards to be hiding from Muggles, and how selfish Harry Potter wizards and witches are. When you have literal gods running around on the streets of New York, government agencies that have no problem employing magic users (S.H.I.E.L.D), and alien invasions every other week, the idea that normal people can't handle a little conjuring starts to become absurd. Most heroes and villains in Marvel have secret identities, but they don't employ mass memory erasure on a massive part of the population like the wizards do just because they don't want to share their gifts with the rest of the world.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After Justin's death at his hands, a 15-year old Harry Dresden is stranded in Britain, pursued by a vengeful auror, and forced to deal with a Hogwarts education on top of everything.
  • Comments: A very engaging AU that merges the magic system of both Harry Potter and The Dresden Files, and does so fairly well. There's quite a few differences, by far the biggest being that Harry Potter is long dead, the entire Potter family having been killed in battle with Voldemort, who himself was in turn killed by Severus Snape in a suicide bombing as revenge for Lily's death. Other changes include Harry's mother having been a pureblood British witch, and Justin De Mare a follower of the Dark Lord.

The Butterfly Effect by Philo Vance

  • Crossover with Sherlock Holmes
  • Recommended by Logatel, Unclouded TJ, Robinton
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: What if, instead of Ron Weasley, Harry Potter met someone else while going to Hogwarts? Would that little detail change just a little detail or would it change everything?
  • Comments: The story replaces Ron Weasley (who simply does not exist within the story's context) and replaces him with an eleven-year-old Sherlock Holmes. It's surprisingly well-done in that it doesn't have Sherlock simply obliterate the series plot and that it doesn't turn into rather frequent logic abuses that some stories take, instead opting to preserve the series' overall atmosphere while changing its pace. It's definitely worth a look if you like both fandoms.
    • Unclouded TJ: I enjoyed this fic so far and although it would appear at first glance to be cheating you must keep in mind that it's not the adult Sherlock Holmes and he makes mistakes just like any other human. Its main feature is the interaction between Harry and Sherlock and how they seem to work well together.

Dark Phoenix by Lightningscar

  • Status: Dormant; last updated March 2018
  • Crossover with: Percy Jackson and the Olympians
  • Synopsis: "This camp isn't for me. I don't belong." A few years after Nico said this, some Campers apparently agreed. Will Nico find a new home at Hogwarts or will he meet rejection there as well? Will he even want to return to Camp Half-Blood when they need him?
  • Comments: Out of the many PJO/HP crossovers out there, this is the best one this troper have read. The writing is consistent (even with quite a few typos) and the author has a good pace. It's also one of the only ones that use the roman characters like Jason and Hazel
    • While it's certainly not the worst HP crossover this troper has read, this definitely does not rank well. The writing can be terribly awkward, with inconsistent uses of contraction and the apparent need to make Nico talk formally, everyone is at least a little OOC, Nico solves a lot of problems that happened in Order of the Phoenix and experiences no moral dissonance from being so afraid of becoming evil that a boggart becomes an evil him from the future (which seems to be an odd choice as in PJ-canon Nico displays basically no evil tendencies) and remorselessly using his powers to terrorize malfoy. Also, Nico teaches fighting wrong. It's not a terrible fic if you're dying for your HP/PJ fix, but this troper doesn't see why it made this list.

The Denarian Renegade, its sequels The Denarian Knight, The Denarian Lord, The Denarian Variation, and the extras The Denarian Omakes by Shezza 88

  • Crossover with The Dresden Files.
  • Recommended by Jinx, Looney Toons, Seraviel, acg452, Jorf
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A seven-year-old Harry finds a blackened silver coin at a low moment in his life.
  • Comments: Harry is delightfully snarky and beautifully balanced between good and evil. It also has the best written Dumbledore I've ever read.
  • Seconded by Looney Toons: And don't miss its sequels The Denarian Knight and The Denarian Lord, and the extras The Denarian Omakes.
    • Harry becomes an insufferable Jerkass within the first three chapters, and remains such throughout the next thirty. Despite excellent plotting, quality writing, and an amazingly well-characterized Dumbledore.
    • Thirded by acg452: Not necessarily perfect per se. He is quite powerful, given that he's sharing brain space with a Fallen Angel, but he has his fair share of problems. For instance, getting the coin stolen at least twice, Voldemort blowing up his apartment and pressing Harry's Berserk Button by burning Meciel's silk sheets. And aside from his small circle of friends, namely Meciel, Dumbledore, Amanda, and Amaris, the last of which is his only blood kin, it's pretty clear most people wouldn't mind him just dying off. That said, he doesn't give two shits about them either, so it all works out. Also, the series is now complete! Boo Ya!

    • Comartemis: I... wait... what...? I just cried tears of happiness Manly Tears for Peter Pettigrew and freaking Bellatrix. Either there is something seriously wrong with me or this man deserves a medal for giving the most despicable characters in the series their very own Heartwarming Moments.
    • Oh gods, I think I just bawled my eyes out due to sheer awesome heartwarming. This is the best story I've seen in a while. A long while. Especially the parts with Bellatrix and Snape and... scratch that. All of it.
    • Eddie Current did NOT cry over the bit with Kreacher and Reg Black. (sniff) "Did Kreacher do wrong?" No, Kreacher. In this, you were as true as Dobby. DAMNIT ALRIGHT I cried for Kreacher! Awesome fic.
    • Death of the Discworld meets the world of Harry Potter always makes an interesting story. My favorite chapter was the one with Severus Snape.

King of Serpents by karatemaster101

  • Recommended by: mothaibabon
  • Crossover with: Artemis Fowl
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Actually, this is simply the first book in a series. In many aspects, it's the average Artemis-Fowl-Goes-to-Hogwarts story. Artemis learns that he is a wizard at age eleven, goes to Hogwarts, and wreaks havoc with his genius. However, there's plenty of twists - including an explanation of Artemis' backstory, his father's disappearance, and all of that jazz, altered to fit with the new universe. The storyline is very well planned out and each story in the series corresponds with one another, which really adds to the mystery and ensures a good ending. Favors the Slytherins a bit, but it's Artemis-centric.
  • Comments: Both the Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter series are cleverly woven together so the timelines and plots make sense. The author employs great writing style, proper grammar (which is getting more difficult to find nowadays) and an extremely good, if sarcastic, sense of humor. Artemis' first year in Hogwarts and the following summer is now finished; currently, the second year is in progress. Updates range from weekly to about two months, though the author has assured me in a private message that she has already planned out the details and plot web for the entire series and simply needs time to put it into sentences.

  • Comments: Seriously, this is the best HP/LOTR crossover this troper has ever read. Though there is little of the titular character, except for mentions, Neville and Molly are absolutely brilliant, and Augusta Longbottom and "Archibald" are side-splittingly hilarious. At a current 36 chapters and 427k+, it's nothing to sneeze at, either.

Main character is an author insert, but it seems to be handled well; Your Mileage May Vary, though, as a few reviewers have noticed some Sue-ish qualities. • Synopsis: Uncle Vernon thought to bring home a puzzle toy he bought to encourage Dudley's mental stimulation. A box-shaped puzzle. A box that plays music. A young Harry solves the puzzle, and alone survives the consequences, to make it quick. Except now he can't stop thinking about the box, about that tune. And he's gained the attention of a very powerful dark being who is not a wizard. The sequel All Problems Solved (Complete) is incredibly good as well.
  • Comments:
    • [Unknown]: Arguably one of the best psychologically frightening stories ever. I had goosebumps reading it.
    • FrodoLives: Extremely creepy. Gives sufficient background so that it still will make sense to people who have not see the Hellraiser movies, like this troper. Best punishment for Fudge and Umbridge ever.
    • IraTheSquire: Holy crap. Most. Deliciously. Disturbing. Thing. Ever. Read this if you are Harry Potter fan. Read this if you are a Hellraiser fan. Hell, read this even if you know nothing about neither. This guy knows how to write psychological thrillers and I can assure all aspired writers can pick up a thing or two from reading this. This NEEDS a page dedicated to it.
    • tomiekawakami: YMMV here. It's barely disturbing more than it is an edge-fest. It's well written, despite some moments of OOC from side characters. It's a revenge fic. Every character that has ever sincerely done Harry wrong meets a graphically depicted hellish fate. That's it.

  • Synopsis: When Harry finally accepted the fact that he had stopped aging, ten years had passed and he knew it was time to leave.
  • Comments: Go read this. Now. It is extremely well written. One of the few complaints I have, is that Harry has the overused backstory of being the master of death, but the rest of the fic is excellent. The author also redeems Loki. Also, the author has some midquels to it and other HPxAvengers crossovers that are great. There are too many to link though. —autopanda
    • For this Troper, Harry came off as the God-Mode Sue to end all God-Mode Sues. He become best friends with Tony Stark, Saves Coulson, Sets Loki up on making a Heel–Face Turn, he's the only person Black Widow opens up to besides Hawkeye, he can suppress Bruce Banner's anger, Hulk goes into an Unstoppable Rage when he's fatally wounded and pretty much usurps Captain America as the leader of the Avengers and he doesn't even technically join and it honestly seems like what would happen if Harry Potter himself wrote himself into an Avengers and made everyone else suck. —[Unknown]
      • USA Bobcat: I have to agree. This 'fic is overrated, and very bad. All I can say is that the grammar and spelling aren't too bad - everything else is.

  • Crossover with: Star Wars
  • Recommended by Inspibrain 101, Robinton

  • Synopsis: Ahsoka Tano, after being transported to Earth, discovers four-year-old Harry Potter, locked in his cupboard. She takes it upon herself to rescue him from his abusive guardians, and teach him the ways of the force. There are severe consequences, in both the wizarding world, and the muggle world...
  • Comments: You might be rolling your eyes. "Oh, boy! It's one of those lame AUs where everything plays out exactly the same as it did in the books, except Harry has a nicer childhood." Believe you me, that is the exact opposite of what happens here. If you are on this website, I cannot recommend this story enough! The author is definitely a troper. Harry being pulled out of his home by Ashoka Tano creates waves around the entire planet- the muggles react in a big way, and major changes occur in the wizarding world as a result. This author manages to address nearly every headscratcher brought up on Harry Potter's trope page- from Harry being placed with the Dursleys, to the relationship between magic and technology, to the ministry of magic's relationship with the muggle government, to what the heck the Founders were thinking when they included moving stairs? It's glorious, trope-filled social commentary. And there is an epic adventure woven through the entire story, with arcs; just when you think things are going perfectly, it gets real bad, real fast. And just when you think things can't get any worse, it gets SO MUCH BETTER! This story definitely requires a somewhat in-depth knowledge of the Harry Potter universe, including the mechanics of spells and wizard politics. You don't need to know too much on the Star Wars side, just general background knowledge of the Jedi and the character of Ashoka Tano. Even if you know next to nothing about Star Wars, this is definitely a Harry Potter-oriented fic. The author does, however, show off some impressive knowledge of the tech in the Star Wars expanded universe, as well as a comprehensive understanding of politics and reactionary policies. In addition- I know this bothers a lot of Harry Potter fanfiction readers- the writer keeps the timeline in the context of world events. It is, in fact, set in the 1980s-'90s. It may seem like it takes a slow pace, but there is so much content packed in, you don't want it to go any faster, you want to read more! The author has a wonderful way of jumping seamlessly to various people- all sorts, in the wizarding world and the muggle world, as well as an out-of-the-blue shot on Emperor Palpatine near the end, more humorous than anything else. Everyone has an angle, everyone has an opinion, everyone has a stake in the game. It's definitely a longer read, but, honestly, THIS should have been the real Harry Potter series, and the stuff JK wrote should have been the fan fiction. —Insipibrain 101

  • Comments: This fic is set years before the Thor movie, so Loki is a teenager so Squick is avoided and he's pre-Face-Heel Turn. Loki and Hermione's interactions are nothing short of hilarious with Loki being the The Charmer and Hermione remaining in character the whole time and it works beautifully. The main focus is on Xander Harris and Wednesday Addams as they they go to Hogwarts but Hermione from the "Golden Trio" does get her share of the story. The story starts of with a slight retelling of the first Harry Potter book and unravels it as Xander works his particular brand of chaos. This could well be described as a day-in-the-life story. • Comments:
    • Dor: Seconded enthusiastically. Nonjon mostly writes comedy, which is a shame because this story proves he can write "serious" fic to rival anyone else mentioned on this page. There's definitely more than a few laughs in there, too (Chapter Four in particular is just one after another), but unlike the rest of Nonjon's work, there's more going on in Browncoat than just the comedy.
    • Comartemis: I know absolutely nothing about Firefly but I had a blast with this fic anyways. It bears noting, however, that Harry appears at first glance to be massively out of character until certain details regarding his past are revealed later on in the story, namely the fact that Harry spent a bit more than a century married to Luna Lovegood of all people (You hear that noise? That's the sound of everyone who's ever read that far going "Oh, that explains it.").

  • Comments: You have never seen a crossover like this. This story loses absolutely nothing despite being a non-magic!AU. All the HP characters somehow manage to be both in-character and more badass than their canon selves. Harry is at his best; charismatic, confident, charming, manipulative (but uses his powers for good), and is absolutely the most charming boyfriend and most devoted boyfriend in the world. Story focuses heavily on character development, with tons of memorable noodle-incidents and realistic depictions of friendships and romance. The writing style is easy to read, with only rare grammar mistakes, and updates are frequent. Kurt and the Dalton crew are the main Glee cast, but the story can easily be understood despite never having watched Glee. Starts off as Harry/Kurt, with Harry/Kurt/Blaine in development. • Synopsis: The Torchwood team have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Set between Adam and Reset. Rated T because of Jack Harkness, swearing, mature themes, slash etc... it's Torchwood!
  • Comments: An amazing piece of work that age-regresses the Torchwood team and sends them to Hogwarts at the beginning of Harry's third year. Story takes place from there onwards and masterfully inserts Torchwood during the years and develops pre-existing minor characters as well as introducing rounded ones.
    • Thirded. This is brilliant. The Torchwood characters are cleverly interwoven with the Potter-verse. Fair warning, though, there's a lot of Ron-bashing (and yes, the bashing really is as bad as it sounds). — EMY3K
      • I heartily agree. Seriously, I bloody love this fic. It takes all the best elements of Torchwood and integrates them into the Potterverse perfectly without feeling out of place (mostly by adjusting the tone of both series to somewhere in the middle, but without being forced). The characterisation is altogether very strong and consistent, and the bashing of Ron isn't quite as bad as it sounds — it's more a highlighting of his character flaws compared to the other main HP cast and giving him time to steadily grow out of them (which started when Book Five was reached). It's really at worse Author Tract against Rowling for her own narrative faults (the only thing Ron's being bashed for is fervently hating on Slytherins and nothing else, which as Hermione notes in a later chapter of the fic isn't a good thing). However, it seems that Ron is the only character not to get character development. On a lighter note, there's quite some brilliant humour in there, and some unexpectedly heartwarming moments which are mostly a result of the team's presence. Even better, while the changes do push the story positively (for the most part), the TW team aren't in Fixer Sue territory at all and there's sufficient tension and conflict to go around. This fic is a must-read for TW and HP fans everywhere.

Harry Potter - Carry On Wayward Son by Sliksick

  • Crossover with Supernatural
  • Recommended by Time Lord Victorious
  • Status: Dead; last updated March 2019
  • Synopsis: On the job one night, Crowley discovers a house with a child being abused by a family. He takes the kid in and adopts him as his son. The child is Harry Potter before he ever got his letter to Hogwarts. This is a story of him growing up with Crowley and Gabriel as parental figures with all the obstacles that come with becoming part demon, part wizard, and all kinds of crazy.
  • Comments: This was originally written as an unofficial continuation of Blood Don't Make Family (see above), and now that author of this fic and that fic have resolved everything, it's more or less an official continuation of sorts. It starts off more on the Supernatural side of things, and then once they get past S5 of SPN, the focus shifts onto Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Note that due to Crowley and Gabriel's influence on a young Harry, the character of Harry Potter is a complete 180 from his canon counterpart, and at times he may come off as a God-Mode Sue. At the same time, this fic is also a really enjoyable read, with Crowley and Gabriel keeping things nice grounded for around the first half so far. The storyline of Supernatural is more or less the same as it is in canon, but with a few key differences, all of those being the direct result of Harry's presence. And so far, it seems as if the Harry Potter storyline is going to be diverging from canon in many ways.

  • Takes place in the summer after Book 1 on the Harry Potter side and right in the middle of Season 2 for Once Upon A Time. It's another "Harry was actually adopted by the Potters" fic, but it's really well done. The story explores the Butterfly Effect of Harry being the long lost son of Cora and Rumplestilskin and how the revelation of his true parentage affects the story for both universes. Fair warning, there's a noticeable amount of bashing (mainly Dumbledore, the Weasleys, and the Wizarding World in general), but it's not as noticeable until later on. Even then, the majority of the bashing is done by Rumplestiltskin, so it's a bit understandable given his personality. A great read with lots of Funny and Heartwarming Moments in equal measure.
  • Warnings: AU (for both canons), Slash (no pairings, but one character having a Coming-Out Story is a major plot point), and the aforementioned bashing.

  • Comments: Quite possibly the single greatest fanfic I've ever read, and that is not hyperbole.
    • millsmess: Seconded with enthusiasm! The author clearly devotes enormous effort towards each chapter, with the following results: realistic and sympathetic characterization, a ridiculous amount of creativity which generates new wonder for Harry's magical world, and a sophisticated interweaving of obscure historical facts with genuine invention to create a world with substance. It's worth noting that the plot moves slowly (which I view as a plus, but don't expect constant action). Finally, this story is an adventure; like all real adventures, it takes work. Be mentally prepared for sophisticated wordplay, mind-bending concepts, and poems in foreign languages. This story demonstrates that fanfiction can be an art form.

Winter is coming... but magic is might.
  • Comments: The best crossover of Harry Potter / Game of Thrones you can find on ff.net. Great characterizations, good writing (sometimes there are still some misspelling but nothing too major) and a great potential, this fic is a must read.

The End of the Beginning by Mariner.

  • Synopsis: London, 1981. The Dark Lord's reign of terror is at its height, and two Muggles possessed of their own magic, entirely different from that taught in the wizarding world, are about to stumble into the war. Two Muggles named Rupert Giles and Ethan Rayne...
  • Comments: Written a little before the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Mariner puts forth a plausible alternate history and an entirely believable reason why Lily's sacrifice saved her son. Aside from the how, and the introduction of Buffy-verse magical capabilities, doesn't really depart from the establish canon within the books as released to that point — the fic eloquently provides another history as to how the Potterverse could have gotten to where it is now.
    • And that's just it—it's dreadfully, heartbreaking ironic in places, but it all makes so, so much sense. It's quite well thought out—no loose ends. Not even Peter's books at the very end. And it all meshes—both franchises keep to their canon by the end of it. Honestly, this could have been the way it happened. It's a very natural crossover, even if you wouldn't suspect so.

  • Comments: Easily one of the best and most realistic crossovers I have ever seen, this one seamlessly blends a postwar, somewhat troubled Harry with Smallville canon. The writing style is excellent, and better yet, it manages to avoid most of the common pitfalls of the genre. —Magyareagle

The timeline is post-Grave with an alive Tara and post-Prisoner of Azkaban, though any specifics are vague. • Pairings: None
  • Synopsis": A low-level, munchkin, 11-year-old (don't ask - his backstory isn't functioning properly) wizard from the Dungeons & Dragons'' universe is summoned by Death-Eaters for some reason. After escaping with his superb skills (actually, mostly luck), he gets enrolled in Hogwarts. Shenanigans, hijinks, and intrigue ensue.
  • Comments: Very good, now finished, with a sequel, Harry Potter and the Confirmed Critical proceeding apace. It's best if you know Dungeons & Dragons, but not necessary; most of the jokes are still funny anyway. I would highly recommend it.
    • Flairina: This troper has never played dungeons and dragons, but has absolutely nothing but good things to say about this. First of all, it is utterly hilarious. Milo (said 11-year-old) is an incredibly enjoyable character, both funny, interesting, and an incredibly fun person to see the story through the eyes of. His mere existence causes ripples in the plot that lead events to go, shall we say, rather differently, and the author reworks events far better than even most 'for want of a nail' fics do. The author also has an incredible eye for detail, and while the number of intersecting plots (which manage to maintain a perfect balance of drama and plausibility) would have had other authors rolling on the floor in confusion, this fic ties them all together brilliantly. The plot twists will throw you for a total loop (in a good way), ESPECIALLY at the end of second year, which is where the story is at current. Several times I either laughed or gasped aloud at the CMOF and CMOA moments here, literally falling off my chair laughing at one point. I think, perhaps best of all, is that despite all the awesome moments and danger surrounding the main sort of-quartet (like everyone else, it takes the main Trio quite a while to come to terms with the idea that Milo isn't crazy, and he really IS from a different world), the story retains a sense of wonder and sheer FUN, much as the early Harry Potter books did, that many other fanfics take for granted. I cannot recommend this story enough- read it if you'd like a pick me up, read it if you're looking for a good 'for want of a nail' that just happens to also be a crossover, read it if you're looking for an unexpected plot with incredible twists- just, READ it.

  • Comments: The story focuses on Harry, the adopted son of the Archmage of Cyrodiil (a pseudo-PC who coexists, but is not actually, the Champion of Cyrodiil), who comes to Hogwarts ignorant of his history and his place in wizarding society. But it also places emphasis on the Archmage himself, whose previous experiences (chronicled in the author's previous works) give him a healthy acceptance of the will of the gods, but a low tolerance for silence and secrecy "for the greater good"... leading to more than a few conflicts of interest between him and the good Headmaster. • Recommended by SuperTulle, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Crossover with the Marvel Cinematic Universe with elements of multiple continuities of Marvel Comics, initially. Later verges on Mega Crossover territory, with additional elements taken from DC Comics, Good Omens, and The Dresden Files. Somehow remains remarkably accessible, if only because Harry's the Audience Surrogate and thanks to the author's habit of providing explanations of characters on request.
  • Status: Complete, with a sequel and two side-stories.
  • Synopsis: New Mexico was not the first time Thor had been a mortal. It was only a refinement of the technique. What if James Potter had been Thor, incarnated as a memoryless newborn? On his death, Odin removed his memories as James, due to grief. In Harry's Third Year, a reformed Loki restores them. Harry now has a father, a family and a heritage that is going to change the world. Forever.
  • Comments: Very, very good. While it's more of a Family/Humour fic early on and occasionally slips into borderline crack territory, there's an abrupt tonal shift around chapter 9 - the humour remains, but it gets much more serious. The characterisation is generally spot on, it puts unique spins on familiar characters, even fusing a few (e.g. Peter Wisdom is really Regulus Black) and giving a few unexpected prominence (Lucius Malfoy, for instance). The plot is complex with frequent twists and liberal use of Foreshadowing and a well stocked Chekhov's Armoury, and most of all, thanks to the Lemony Narrator it is very, very funny. It plays with Black-and-Gray Morality, with even the best of the good guys having their flaws and darker sides, Loki's past not simply being glossed over despite his redemption, and there's a massive dose of Parents as People.
    • While there's a carefully designed In-Universe plan involved (lots, in fact - it's possible the only work with its own Gambit Pile Up page), the fic is very heavily character driven, with a lot of exploration of various characters' personalities, outlooks, and psychological issues, and how all of those drive their actions and thus the plot. At first, this led to a lot of excessive introspection, and given the sheer size of the cast, it drags the first book out far longer than it necessarily needed to be. However, as the writing improved and the navel-gazing was trimmed, it became more of a plot engine and route to develop a whole stable of characters, even reconstructing the classic Romance Arc (though per Word of God, that was a complete accident).
    • Particular emphasis is placed on Harry's Character Development, with the concept of the fic being, essentially, how Harry would really react to the premise of a typical Super!Harry fic, real parents, superpowers, and all. The answer is that it's all a lot messier and more complicated than such fics usually have it be - he's got a mound of abandonment issues, the powers are both delayed and inclined to blow up in his face, and while he does get more assertive and confident with time, he's still a shy dork around girls. Additionally, given what he goes through, things like his PTSD from Order of the Phoenix crop up much earlier than canon and are much, much worse.
    • However, the entire series is about 1.9 million words and rising,. A wordy style, a massive cast with a Switching P.O.V. used to make sure everyone gets a Day In The Lime Light, and (until around chapter 40) the aforementioned introspection all contribute to this. The second book is more streamlined, with more of the word count focused on action and plot, but it's still nearly a million words long.
    • A regular complaint is that by about a third of the way through every character is related/had past dealings with ten other characters, to the point of One Degree of Separation. This is lampshaded at several points, before The Reveal that Doctor Strange has been steadily arranging events to forge the superhero community into a united front to face Thanos. Despite the author claiming that he doesn't like OP characters, a better description would be that he doesn't like one side being OP. The action steadily scales up throughout the story. Another complaint is that it suffers from nigh-omniscient villains, while the heroes are relatively clueless and spend much of the time stumbling around in the dark - this is explained, but also toned down in the sequel.
    • To some, the above points are part of the appeal. To others, they make it slow, cluttered and convoluted. In summary? It's very good, very readable and deservedly very popular, but it's not a series for everyone.
