Fanfic / Quest To The Past

Go To

Quest to the Past is an ongoing Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Harry Potter crossover by Marisandini. Also found here. The author has also written a fic which lays out in detail why they sorted Percy into that particular House at Hogwarts, found here.

Circe has broken the Ancient Law. To spite her mother, she went back in time to help her grandson Voldemort conquer Hecate's precious Wizarding World, and to move from there to challenging the Olympians themselves. With little time to act, and heeding a Prophecy, Zeus and the others choose Percy Jackson to be sent to the past in the Marauders Era to save them all.

In the past, and a ten-year-old again, Percy befriends Lily Evans (who he knows will be important in the future, if not "how"), and Severus Snape.

Meanwhile, in the present, Harry Potter attends Hogwarts hearing all these stories about one Perseus Jackson.

A fanfiction with a similar premise has been written, but they have both become their very own stories. Can be found here.

Quest to the Past contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Snape like in canon material unfortunately lives in a very dysfunctional family, with his father who is compared by Percy with Smelly Gabe. While he does not have a bad relationship with his mother, his overall family life still makes him feel neglected.
    • Walburga Black is one for both Sirius and Regulus at least in an emotional manner, an example of this is when she attacked repeatedly at Teafey the fairy and was about to kill her no matter how much Regulus begged her to stop because of him being close with a "pathetic" creature.

  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: How James and Co. seem to view Percy, believing him to be a Dark Wizard, despite being a Hufflepuff.

  • The Ace: This is how Percy is remembered by the time Harry attends Hogwarts. Despite how he was treated in school at times, by this point Percy is remembered as an incredibly talented and heroic individual.
    • In canon, Hagrid considered the members of House Hufflepuff to be a bunch of duffers. Now:
Hagrid: Some of the bes' and braves' people come from Hufflepuffs. Why, yer godfather was one and he was, hands down, the bes' wizard of his generation.

  • Asshole Victim: The DADA professor in the second year Jeff Heckler receives the torture curse by Percy's hands, however considering that he was perfectly fine with using, killing, and torturing kids for his own gain, it's not really easy to feel sorry for him.

  • Bullying a Dragon: Percy is an incredibly powerful and dangerous person, who people keep trying to aggravate. Only Circe has any clue just how terrifying Percy can be, and even she underestimates him. Indeed, years later, Hagrid remembers Percy as the best of his generation. The worst offenders though are the Marauders, who cannot get it into their thick heads. Examples include:
    • Regular harassing of Percy and his friend Severus.
    • James challenging Percy to a duel, which ends very badly for him when he inadvertently triggers Percy's PTSD and nearly dies.
    • Fourth year, Sirius pins Percy to a wall and threatens him to give up his spot to go the contest in the states to James, since his mate deserves it more, and Percy is just a dumb 'duffer.' Percy is nearly amused before tossing the boy to the floor, and gives his own warning, with Sirius belatedly remembering how this 'duffer' is supposed to be a Dark Wizard.

  • Caught on Tape: After some occasions where Professor Silverback has been prejudiced against Slytherins to the point of convincing the teachers that the explosion in their common room happened because Snape had some artifact with Dark Arts without proof, Percy goes to Silverback to pressure him into confessing of his distaste for the house and it's members, and records it in audio to give it to Dumbledore later.

  • The Call Knows Where You Live: To remove any ambiguity, the Prophecy sending Percy to the past calls him by his name.

  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: As usual with Percy, a great number of girls, including Lily even, think that he's really handsome, and are attracted to him, but he just doesn't realize this unless you tell him to his face with a megaphone. Of course part of this may be that his heart remains committed to Annabeth.

  • Cool Kid-and-Loser Friendship: This is how Snape sees his friendship with Percy and Lily, who are both very popular students. Of course, it doesn't help with his confidence at all and on occasions makes him scared that they'll abandon him for cooler friends, which in turn also makes him feel pulled towards his bad companions in Slytherin. He also makes some dangerously reckless decisions in his second year to try and keep Percy and Lily to still like him, which they call him out for.

  • The Corrupter
    • Severus fails to realize how his friends in Slytherin are actually working to carefully recruit him to the Death Eaters.
    • Damien, the captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team, is very good at using favors and blackmail as leverage to get people to do stuff they do not want to.

  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Percy is Harry's godfather, indeed his full name is Harry Perseus Potter, but was never there for him growing up, meaning Harry went to the Dursleys. Except Harry does later meet Percy, yet he is still only a young man when that happens, and apparently jumping through time, which is undoubtedly why he was unavailable. Despite this, he still tries to be with Harry as much as is possible for him.

  • Deep Cover Agent: Professor Rose from Percy's first year is very suspicious to him, and he keeps investigating her, while she shows a clear interest in him. Later revealed she is actually a spy all the way from MACUSA, who Dumbledore brought in so she could look for possible Death Eater agents in his school. Unfortunately, she suspects Percy to be one.

  • Delayed Ripple Effect: Percy's presence in the Hogwarts of the past is slowly but surely fixing all of the mess that Circe is causing in the timeline, but at the same time it's also causing some changes even if not as massive as the ones caused by the goddess, like Percy becoming Harry's godfather, and him being named Harry Perseus Potter in honor of the demigod.

  • Divine Assistance: Given how important this quest is and the fact that they won't be able to supervise the hero since he's in the past, the Olympians decide (thanks to Hestia) to give Percy some blessings to assure that he has the most chances of success in his mission.
    • Zeus allows him to fly like any other mortal.
    • Poseidon makes his ties with the ocean even stronger and ensures that no harm will come to him under water.
    • Hades makes Death favor him more than it did before.
    • Hera let's Percy find things he searches with relative ease as long as it doesn't meddle with the Fates.
    • Demeter deepens his connection with plants, they don't love him but he'll be tolerated.
    • Hestia gives him her blessing to find hearh even in the coldest nights to protect him from those who go to harm him, also he's able to use her hotspots.
    • Athena puts a feather from her sacred animal, the owl, in his necklace and tells him that when he needs to seek the truth to ask it for answers. However it's still unclear how it actually works since Percy has yet to use it.
    • Artemis blesses Percy to hit when it counts and have a relatively good aim in general but since he's not a Huntress he has to practice for it, it also counts as a blessing from Apollo since she borrows some of his power to make it work.
    • Aphrodite blesses Percy as well but when she's asked what it is she just responds that it's a secret. Considering her behavior with her giggling about it, and reputation, the other Olympians conclude that she has her own hidden agenda, and it's likely that it will give problems for Percy's love life.
    • Ares makes any weapon that Percy receives or chooses love him and be compatible with Riptide as well as other weapons that he has.
    • Hermes and Hephaestus give to Percy "Ivan", an automaton fairy with knowledge of both Greek Mythology and the Wizarding World as well as other features so he can help to support the hero in his quest.
    • Dionysus gives him a can of of coke and says to Percy to use it when he needs it, it's still unkown what that does exactly.
    • Both Hecates from the present and the past also help Percy. In the present she's the one who sends him to the past and reverts him back to his 10 year-old phisically (and a bit mentally) so he can get into Hogwarts, and the one from the past assists him once he explains the situation to her, she is the one who gives him his one of a kind broomstick "Pegasus" and appears from time to time to give advice for the demigod regarding his task.
    • Rhea goes to Hogwarts in his third year to aid her grandson as well, see Doting Grandparent bellow for more information.

  • Doting Grandparent: While perhaps in an unorthodox manner due to their previous lack of relationship between one another until then, Rhea becomes one for Percy when she goes as the new DADA professor in his third year to make sure that things won't get worse than it has already and proceeds to take care of him as much as she can like saving him and his friends from a severe and undeserved punishment, train him with the Patronus Charm for his future ordeal as well as comfort the demigod when his PTSD begins to be out of hand (in a letter to the chief of the merpeople in the Black Lake she calls him her "adored grandson" as well).

  • The Dreaded: Percy unfortunately to some of his classmates and teachers after he uses the Cruciatus Curse. In chapter 71 when Professor Sprout takes him aside in private and tries to reassure him she cares about him and wants to help, he points out that the whole time she has been keeping a tight grip on her wand.

  • For Want Of A Nail: While Percy's mission is to maintain the timeline, some changes are creeping in.
    • Snape has a much more mellow personality (at least relative to how he used to be), and even begins mentoring Harry on potion making.
    • Sirius' name is cleared, and Pettigrew is outed as the traitor.

  • Foreshadowing:
    • Lily sincerely believes that Percy would never lie to her about anything...

  • He Who Fights Monsters: Percy was badly traumatized even before he found himself thrown back into time away from everyone he knew and love. Except he and Annabeth had managed to lock away the worst of it, only for one of Circe's schemes to bring back all the trauma amplified, to the point he becomes increasingly dark and violent.

  • Hero-Worshipper: In the past, Bill Weasley saw Percy as a role model and his hero/inspiration, Word of God says that basically the demigod telling him stories is the reason for his love for adventure as an adult.

  • Identical Stranger: Lily's archnemesis Theophania Travers, Tiffany for short, is noted to resemble Annabeth a lot with a few differences such as having a more penetrating gaze, having curly black hair that is loose bellow her shoulder, a more rounder nose and more pale than the blonde's tan. Percy reflects that she's basically like an Annabeth that dyed her hair and let Aphrodite put makeup on her. Which is unfortunate given how much he longs for his lost love who he has not seen in years.

  • Intergenerational Friendship: Percy and Hagrid are this, and the latter still remembers him very fondly years later.

  • Jerk Jock: Like in the source material James Potter could be considered this at times. He's a really good quidditch player, but he could be a mean bully at times as well.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The Marauders fit here as usual, while they have their good qualities at times, they can be pretty mean-spirited pranksters and bullies.

  • Lovable Jock: Thanks to Zeus's blessing before the start of his "quest to the past" Percy (who is a really Nice Guy as we know by now) is able to fly without any problem or fears, due to this he can play quidditch and he turns out to be a prodigy of such caliber that he's remembered as one of the best players Hogwarts has ever seen even after years of him having disappeared.

  • Manipulative Bastard:
    • Circe plays this role surprisingly well in both Percy's first and third year, as she manipulates him and other people for her schemes. She is also fairly adept at keeping her grandson, Voldemort, in line.
    • A less harmful one is Damien, who manipulates and plays people very well.

  • Morality Pet: Heavily implied that Snape's more pleasant attitude (he's still awful to school kids, but faaaaar better than he was in canon) is because he maintained his friendship with Percy, who is a positive influence on his life.
    • It goes to the point that in chapter 84 Severus actually uses his friendship with both Lilly and Percy both to fuel his powerful Patronus and indirectly makes it very clear that he considers both Lilly and Percy to be "what makes life worth living"

  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Percy using the Cruciatus Curse destroys a lot of the goodwill he had been gaining with his peers and teachers. At least those in the know.

  • Older Than They Look: So he can enter Hogwarts and be able to fulfill his quest, Hecate sends Percy to the past with a body of a 10-year-old and a bit of the maturity to match as well.

  • One True Love: Annabeth is this for Percy, and Word of God there will be no other pairings for him. If he has to wait decades to see her again, by Jove he will stay faithful until then!

  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Percy ''ALWAYS' messes up in some way when he learns a new spell. So his class is freaked out when it fails to happen, assuming something worse will occur instead.

  • Parental Substitute: Percy mentions that Lily and Petunia's mother, who is called Susannah Evans in this story, fills this role for him while he's in the past.

  • Pep-Talk Song: In his third year when he's surrounded by Dementors and all hope seems lost, Percy hears "Eye of the Tiger" from his walkman and his good memories come to his mind replacing his traumas while he slaughters the corrupted spirits and sings too.

  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As a demigod himself, Dumbledore is able to help Percy a lot, and they work together as much as possible to handle the yearly threats. That said, he is still wary of a mysterious and powerful demigod who has appeared seemingly out of nowhere, so as a lot of intrigues and threats begin to surround both Hogwarts and Percy alike, he doses the sea spawn's drink in a little bit of Veritaserum to make sure he is not a threat to his students, and learn the truth as much as possible. He does not press too far though once he is sure Percy is not a threat to his charges.

  • Sadist Teacher: Due to the long story of prejudice in the Wizarding World that started from Salazar Slytherin and continued through his house until some pure-blood supremacists killed his parents, Professor Silverback dedicated himself to bully members of Slytherin as payback.

  • Serious Business: Marlene McKinnon, the second Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain, takes her job even more seriously than Oliver Wood. Her team, including Percy, live in fear of her, and she makes them train during the summer. Even Percy notes how he, the hero who got through Tartarus, is so terrified of her. Later explained that she really wants to play professionally, but lacks the natural talent of Percy and other players, so she has to really work to prove herself to any professional recruiters.

  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Basically Percy's job. Complicated though by the fact that he has basically no idea what the proper timeline is supposed to look like with the wizards. The sole pieces of information he was given before being thrown into the past were the names Lily and James, and not even if he was supposed to protect them, or be wary of them. Fortunately, from what we see of the future with Harry, so far Percy has mostly preserved the timeline.

  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Considering all of what he went through even before being sent into the past and what he has to suffer after that it's no wonder that Percy ends up fitting in this trope, it doesn't help that all of his traumas have been returning to him little by little thanks to Circe's schemes. His grandmother Rhea does what she can to help in his third year, but it is really an uphill battle.

  • Smug Snake: Circe is one without a doubt, having a lot of ego and being quick to taunt and mock her enemies when it seems like she's winning or is about to and her allies as well to remark the point that she's above them.

  • Snark-to-Snark Combat:
    • Sometimes the conversations between Percy and Lily can develop into this, not really a surprise since both characters have a similar sense of humor.
    • And of course since Harry inherits his mother's dry sarcastic humor it's no wonder that when he meets his godfather and talks to him this happens, Percy remarks that he resembles his mother at that moment and that he was a bad influence for her.

  • Spit Take: This is Percy's reaction when he realizes that the hippy-looking witch that is going to be his new DADA teacher is none other than his grandma the TITANESS Rhea.

  • Spoiled Brat: How Percy views James, and makes James oblivious to the consequences of his actions at times.

  • Spotting the Thread: By his third year, Severus has accumulated a lot of little details about Percy which have added up to make clear he is not who he says he is. Too many inconsistencies, contradictions, etcetera. He does not say anything to Lily about it but does feel she should have noticed herself.

  • Trauma Conga Line: Not only Percy carries all of the baggage that he carries from all of his adventures in the canon material but now from all of the new difficult times that he has from his time in the past as well, it doesn't help that Circe uses the Will 'o Wisps to unlock the seal in Percy's memories and all of his experiences in Tartarus come forward to torment him as time continues.

  • Undying Loyalty: Percy is a Hufflepuff to the end!

  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: It turns out that Damien is a metamorphmagus but is keeping it as a secret.

  • Wham Line:
    • "Hello, it's nice to meet everyone. Officially, my name is Ray Ops, your new DADA Professor, but at another time I'm called the Titaness Rhea, please to meet you."

  • Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters: It seems that this is what Snape in his youth thinks of the Death Eaters, basically seeing them as Dark Arts Activists who fight for their rights to use the Dark Arts rather than the obvious terrorist group that has a lot of parallels with the nazis.
