Hoax is an ongoing Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Harry Potter crossover by WiseGirl35.

Circe makes her bid for power and revenge, with a ritual to send both herself and Annabeth Chase back in time, only for Annabeth to royally screw it up. Unfortunately, they were still in the past, and the Olympians knew they were doomed unless help of their own was sent back, with Percy Jackson doing it to save his girlfriend. The catch? They are not just back in time, but stuck in Hectate's world of wizards, during the Marauder Era when James Potter, Lily Evans, etc. are attending school. So now they have to deal with school, a suspicious headmaster, and Circe teaming up with Voldemort, and out to kill them both. Will they ever find peace? Or is peace just a hoax for the pair?

A fanfiction with a similar premise has been written, but they have both become their very own stories. Can be found here.

hoax contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Snape like in canon material unfortunately lives with his abusive father, but Annabeth intervenes to remove him from the equation. With him gone, Snape and his mom start doing much better.
    • The Black family, with Walburga being that way in particular to Sirius. Later, we learn that Regulus was subject to a more subtle version of this, as he was raised solely to be his brother's loyal companion and supporter as his purpose in life. When Sirius deviates squarely from the family agenda, the younger son is lost and vulnerable.

  • The Ace: Annabeth is top of her grade, beautiful, athletic, and popular with her peers in Ravenclaw.

  • Above Good and Evil: Emily Dawson, the Ravenclaw prefect in the demigods's first year in Hogwarts, believes this. She is Circe's spy because of the knowledge that she can be bestowed from the immortal sorceress, no matter what nasty things she has to do to have it.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: It's noted in the story that while what Emily Dawson did was despicable there is a level of sadness in her situation, because if Circe hadn't messed with time, then she could've just continue living a normal life instead of ending up as a disposable pawn for the time-traveling villainess.

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Percy and Annabeth's ADHD gets shown a lot here.

  • Battle Couple: Percy and Annabeth of course.

  • Berserk Button:
    • Percy and Annabeth are this for Circe. They ruined her island home beforehand and made her feel powerless. When she went for revenge, they completely ruined her scheme to become a power on par with Hectate.
    • Percy and Annabeth are easily triggered by the actions of any of the gods by this point, as well as being on a quest once more. Especially one lasting seven years. They are very much against bullies.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Annabeth is this for sure, best demonstrated at the end of their first year when she does not go for revenge against Circe's agent, because a) she does not want to risk being investigated for murder at Hogwarts, and b) she knows Circe will kill the spy anyways.

  • The Call Knows Where You Live: Rachel's prophecy makes it very explicit just who is involved here:
    • "Sea and Wisdom right the wrong in time
    • Joined together, heroes of both worlds combined
    • Prevent the dark from rising prime
    • And save both mortals and those divine.

  • Damsel in Distress: Very much averted with Annabeth, and the chapter which demonstrates this is titled 'A Dam—no, strike that, A "HERO" Out of Time.' When Circe sneaks into her room to perform the ritual to travel back in time, Annabeth senses her, sneaks up, and ruthlessly attacks, disrupting the whole spell. Stranded back in time, she forces Circe to retreat, rolls with being in the past, and by the time Percy gets there, Annabeth has set up a secure identity, financing, and even a house.

  • Divine Intervention: Thanks to the Hecate of the past getting involved when she sensed Percy in her Wizarding World, all the people who saw him and Annabeth when they got caught had their memory about it erased. Although it was Annabeth who had to carry out the deed, using the Mist that Hectate left behind.
  • Dying Race: Well, 'dying' may be an over-exaggeration, but the Wizarding population from Harry's time is much smaller than it was in the Marauder's Era, which likely all can be laid at Voldemort's feet. For example, here are 35 Ravenclaw first years, and 37 for Hufflepuff. This has repercussions like how because of how the first years are divided up more for their rooms, Peter Pettigrew never lived with James, Sirius, or Remus thanks to the introduction of Percy.

  • For Want Of A Nail: Thanks to Percy and Annabeth being Trapped in the Past, and they are told they have to attend Hogwarts for seven years. It is in their second year that we really start to see changes to the timeline:
    • Due to the inclusion of Percy, Peter Pettigrew never becomes one of the Marauders, and instead is a bitter loner. Not only does this make him easy prey for Voldemort's Diary, it means he will not be James and Lily's Secret Keeper.
    • The Chamber of Secrets is opened during Percy and Annabeth's second year, which is much earlier than canon, and the monster is identified early on to be a basilisk since Peter screwed up targeting James and Lily.

  • Genre Savvy: Severus is the original target to be given Voldemort's Diary, but he is quickly put on guard. This is helped that his family life has greatly improved, leaving him emotionally healthier, and without the Marauder's bullying him either. Regardless, he promptly chucks it in the Black Lake. Unfortunately, he really should have shown it to a teacher instead.

  • God's Hands Are Tied: Because of the Ancient Laws Circe has to be very careful or she'll be located by Hecate, thus she only can use regular magic instead of her full power.
    • In turn, Hecate is constrained in terms of how much she can do, since she dares not draw the attention of the Olympians.

  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Alright, 'paragon' definitely does not describe Hectate, but she is on the protagonists' side, is of the Celestial Paragons and Archangels variety, and plotwise serves this against Circe. Being back in the past in a way different than planned, Circe cannot use her magic openly without her former patron coming down on her, and crushing her. Hectate is also the one giving orders to Percy and Annabeth, both from the future and in the past...whether they like it or not.

  • Greater-Scope Villain: While Zeus would take offense to be labeled as a 'villain,' Hectate warns that if Percy and Annabeth are revealed to be demigods, or the truth of the gods, in general, gets out, then the king of the gods will destroy the entire wizarding world and everyone in it. So it's a further challenge for the couple, and means they are very much on their own, aside from mixed assistance from Hectate.

  • Hot-Blooded: Why ultimately the Sorting Hat does not put Percy into Hufflepuff. While Loyalty is indeed a defining trait for him and he believes strongly in justice, his complete lack of patience (and work ethic) ultimately made Gryffindor win out.

  • Instant Expert: Percy is this for potions, completely stupefying Professor Slughorn in the process. He just adds ingredients without a single care for the proper order (essential in potion-making), yet thanks to his Poseidon-related powers over liquids, whatever he produces comes out perfect.

  • Lovable Jock: Percy is definitely this, easily taking to Quidditch with his superior physique and Demigod abilities. He also early on takes steps to keep James from becoming a Jerk Jock.

  • Loyal Animal Companion: Annabeth gets an owl whose eyes are kaleidoscopic like Piper. That similarity to her absent friend prompts her to buy the loyal companion (owls are a creature of Athena after all, except for screech owls, which belong to Hades), and name it Piper too. Although Piper loathes Percy, and it is mutual, with only Annabeth's threats keeping them from fighting.

  • Mind Manipulation: Of the Fake Memories and Jedi Mind Trick variants with the Mist. The British are apparently particularly vulnerable to this, and Annabeth uses it to help set up a bank account and buy a house (with legal money) by convincing people there is an adult with her. Later at the end of the climax of their first year at Hogwarts, they are left in a very incriminating situation, with Dumbledore aiming his wand at them, but Annabeth once more uses the Mist leftover from Hectate to alter everyone's minds of events.

  • Odd Friendship: Percy is close friends with both Lily and the Marauders, despite how both groups really do not get along. Lily does her best to stay apart from James in particular. Despite having two very separate groups of friends, Percy somehow makes this work.

  • Older Than They Look: Percy and Annabeth both got de-aged back to being 11 again

  • One True Love: Percabeth is deep and strong here!

  • Out-Gambitted: Dumbledore knows something is strange about these two new students, particularly how their names just popped up on the school register, so he plans with McGonagall to spy on them to judge their reactions. Annabeth senses them though, and easily figures out what is going on, and manipulates Percy to make sure they appear to be a perfectly normal pair of kids, looking forward to learning magic. Once they leave, she gives her boyfriend the news that they have to attend Hogwarts for seven years, causing an enraged outburst, and then she explains what she did and why.

  • Outside-Context Problem: Due to the equivalent of a legal loophole in the Ancient Laws binding the gods, Circe is able to act more freely within the wizarding world to make her bid for power, as they are technically a separate domain from the rest of the Olympian pantheon. This means she can use magic forbidden by the Ancient Laws, of which time magic is just one example. This also comes up with how the wizards are being threatened by a force they do not understand, while Percy and Annabeth struggle against wizarding threats.
    • An example of this comes from after the first basilisk attacks, where the description of what is happening leaves Annabeth wondering if Medusa is responsible.

  • The Prankster: The Marauders, with the new addition of Percy into the group instead of Peter, fit into this trope. Due to his own experiences, Percy makes sure these pranks due not cross the line out outright bullying.

  • Psychic Block Defense: When Dumbledore covertly attempts his strongest Legilimency on Percy and Annabeth, he cannot get through their mental barriers, and assumes they are skilled Occlumens. It is unclear is if this is because they are demigods, Hectate's protection, or the mental defenses they have developed on their own over the years (as hinted during the Sorting Hat ceremony).

  • Refusal of the Call: This is Percy's reaction to this new prophecy at first, after having dealt with two already, he just wanted to go to the past to save Annabeth. But he has to stop a world-ending event again, and Hecate has to force him to swear on the Styx that he will.

  • Rescue Romance: Both James and Lily begin to feel an attraction between one another when he saves the redhead from the Basilisk by flying her away from the monster with his broomstick. James is more straightforward about it than Lily, however.

  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Actually invoked by Circe, whose aim is to ensure a specific prophecy comes to pass. We are only shown part of it so far though.
    • The powers of one neither truly mortal nor immortal.
    • The heart of one neither a god nor a human.
    • 12 hands of magic from those who were once magical.
    • The droplet of eternal summer.

  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Both Percy and Annabeth are on the verge of this. She nearly breaks when the Sorting Hat inadvertently makes her relive her worst memories and warns that Percy definitely will if he has to go through the same thing.

  • Smug Snake: Both Circe and Voldemort are this without question, not just for their enemies but also towards each other with both being derisively sarcastic and taunting one another.

  • Super-Strength: On top of how Annabeth and Percy's bodies are enhanced from being demigods in the first place (and engage in regular, intense physical exercise), they retained all of their muscles and strength from their late teens when they were transformed into pre-teens.

  • Took a Level in Kindness: Originally while the Marauders weren't all that bad they still could be mean bullies at points, a frequent target of theirs being with Severus Snape for example. In this story, with Percy being in the group instead of Pettigrew, he stops both James and Sirius from going too far, and convince them to leave Snape alone.

  • Tranquil Fury: In contrast to Percy's hot anger (which he describes as being like a volcano inside of him), when Annabeth gets angry (or scared), Percy describes how she gets harder and colder, and more closed off.

  • Trapped in the Past: Percy and Annabeth, and they are told they have to attend Hogwarts for seven years.

  • Villainous Breakdown: Circe at the end of the first year. First Annabeth ruined everything by stranding her in the wrong year, and then the heroes ruin her plans for revenge and completing her mission, and now Hectate is aware of her presence. So not only is Circe stranded, she cannot use her main magic without the goddess finding and coming down on her, forcing her to rely solely upon regular wizard magic. Voldemort is finding this all very amusing.

  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Dumbledore is this. While his memories of witnessing Percy and Annabeth fighting may have been erased, he was quite clear that he decided he would do whatever it took to recruit them in the fight against Voldemort, no matter the price to himself or them.

  • You Have Failed Me: Circe gives this threat to her spy, Emily Dawson when she fails to carry out her plan the first time. So of course when she ends up failing completely the goddess disposes of her without any remorse, nor second thought, just like Annabeth anticipated.
