The Merchant Prince Of Pentos by Lord_Kragan
  • Recommended by Rowboat Gorillaman
  • Status: Ongoing
  • "Synopsis": A story revolving around Viserys remaining in Pentos, under the tutelage of Illyrio.
  • Comments: it's an interesting story, studying a type of plot not too common. It's certainly not a mary sue, specially considering how things are turning out as of chapter 8.
  • Has its own trope page: [1]

The North Remembers by Silverblood
  • Recommended by Eegah
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A continuation of the story from where A Dance with Dragons left off.

Blood on the Trident by The Banner Holder
  • Recommended by Foosdoohrah
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: The heir to Riverrun was a drunk, a whore-monger, a dilettante...Until one day, everything changed. A modern ASOIF fan lands up inside the heir to the Riverlands, Edmure Tully. Inspired from the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court...
  • Comments: Similar to a Connecticut Yankee in King Robert's Court but the author has put meticulous detail into World building and Trade on the Narrow Sea and how an SI's actions can affect people hundreds of miles away. Also, a very gritty, realistic trait on the common modern-person-in-Westeros fic.

Under Blue Heaven by The Banner Holder
  • Recommended by Foosdoohrah
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Send us your ambassadors: and thus we shall judge whether you wish to be at peace with us or at war...if you make war on us, the Everlasting God, who makes easy what was difficult and makes near what was far, knows that we know what our power is. For if there is one Sun above green Earth, then there must be one Khan under blue Heaven.
  • Comments: The Mongols fight the Dothraki. An incredibly well-written, well-researched fic about how the Mongols fight and defeat Khal Drogo's Khalasar.

Game of Stacks by Comma Splice
  • Recommended by Electroninja
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Dr. Ned Stark, Professor of History at Crownlands University is asked by his old friend, College President Robert Baratheon, to become the new director of the school library. His new job causes dramatic changes to his family's life. Meanwhile, Tywin Lannister, CEO of Casterly Rock Enterprises deals with his disappointing children and finds a potential apprentice in his new intern, Arya Stark.
  • Comments: An odd combination of a High School A.U. and Period Fic, Game of Stacks is both Game of Thrones in a modern world educational system as well as the implied future of Westeros. The characterization is spot on, with wonderful little changes thrown into each character to modernize them to the setting.

And The Giant Awoke by RemoWilliams
  • Recommended by Caellach Tiger Eye
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: "What if Tyrion actually did fight The Mountain by himself?" An Alternate Universe story which diverges from Episode 4x07, where before Oberyn can offer to Champion for Tyrion in his Trial-By-Combat, the Imp instead ponders seriously on his jape to Bronn about vanquishing the Mountain on his own. This leads to him developing an ingenious idea which enables him to kill Gregor Clegane, proving - in the eyes of the Gods - his innocence regarding Joffrey's murder; of course, Tyrion is still disillusioned by his family now, and so he arranges to leave for Braavos under his own terms and build a new life there... And that is when things get interesting.
  • Comments:: This story is set firmly in the universe of the Tv Series, as things stood near the end of Season 4, but diverges in more ways than just For Want of a Nail afterwards (the story was started when Season 4 was wrapping up its initial airing). Nonetheless, the author seems well-acquainted with content from the books and so the narrative is enriched by further elements, becoming its own story in due time. Tyrion's developing his own power-base on his own terms is genuinely inspirational, and he becomes a major player in Essossi politics and beyond; not only does he take Arya into his Braavosi household, but when his presence affects things in Westeros it becomes even more unpredictable to see where the story is going. Tywin being alive for a longer period of time makes for its own interesting ripple effects separate from Tyrion's influence, so the narrative quickly goes Off the Rails in a glorious, even emotionally satisfying, fashion before too long.

Promise by SimplyLucia
  • Recommended by K410ren
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Ned Stark's POV on Robert's Rebellion, from his last days in the Eyrie to his return to Winterfell: how war shook his certainties, changed his vision of life and made him lie to keep a promise.
  • Comments:: This story doesn't diverge too much from A Song of Ice and Fire or Game of Thrones, with the exception of including a 12-year-old Sandor "The Hound" Clegane as part of the Lannister forces. It's fairly realistic in Ned's POV with his growing disillusionment with Robert's attitude toward battle and women and his guilt over his involvement in the Knight of the Laughing Tree.

Robb is able to get past the Twins without a marriage pact leaving him open to a marriage alliance with Margaery Tyrell. The Young Stag by Kornerbrandon

  • Pairings: Arya Stark and Steffon Baratheon (OC)
  • Rating: M (It's game of Thrones. What do you expect?)
  • Synopsis: Steffon Baratheon, true born son of Robert and Cersei Baratheon, is the odd child out. His black hair and blue eyes mark him out among his siblings. Upon arriving at Winterfell, Steffon is shocked to learn he has become betrothed to the feisty, yet intriguing, Arya Stark. As the Seven Kingdoms spiral into chaos, Steffon is forced to become a leader.
  • Comments: A fanfic following a trueborn son of Robert Baratheon. Steffon is a very intriguing and likable protagonist with a good balance of strengths and flaws as well as a very engaging love-story between him and Arya.

The Covering Sky by Rellie

  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth
  • Synopsis: Alternate Universe from episode 3x07 in which Brienne becomes the reluctant guest of the Lannisters
  • Comments: Enjoyable fic which despite some rather ridiculous situations keeps everyone thoroughly in character (One of the best Lord Tywins I've read in fanfic), what the Jaime/Brienne fans probably wish season 4 would be like.

  • Status: Dormant
  • Pairings: Ramsay Bolton/Sansa Stark
  • Synopsis: Petyr Baelish travels north to introduce the Boltons to his daughter, Alayne Stone.
  • Comments: A very dark story, made all the more unsettling by being told from Ramsay's POV. The Sansa in this story is much more different and disturbed than we remember her, and their romance is equal parts unnerving and entertaining.

Austenland by imagineagreatadventure
  • Recommended by Vanilla Orchid 95
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister, Sansa Stark/Podrick Payne
  • Synopsis: Sansa Stark is rich, bored, and desperate for her own Mr. Darcy - an almost disastrous combination that leads her to buy a trip to Austenland - the resort where you get to practically live as if it was 1814 and find your own Austen happily ever after! When she finally gets her much poorer (and about twice as Austen obsessed) friend Brienne Tarth to agree to go with her, they both find that the land of Jane Austen is not exactly what they expect.
  • Comments: This fic is an absolute delight. The author does a fantastic job of keeping everyone in character and somehow stops this story from being so completely cheesy. There is a lot of humor and a lot of nice friendship moments between Sansa and Brienne.

  • Comments: Brilliantly written. Lo Jun makes for a fascinating and believable OC, serving as an unstoppable force to the immovable object that is Stannis. And Stannis himself is kept in-character throughout the story, while also undergoing some vital character development. Very highly recommended.

  • Crossover with Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy.
  • Pairings: Catelyn Stark/Ned Stark, Lyanna Stark/Rhaegar Targaryen, Elia Martell/Rhaegar Targaryen
  • Synopsis: An Old Kingdom AU that follows Sansa as she tries to figure out her place in the world of Wallmakers, Abhorsens and Free Magic.
  • Comments: For those unfamiliar with the Old Kingdom setting of the story, the author provides a guide, so no former knowledge is necessary. For those who have read Nix's series, the fic stems logically from Nix's canon, with mentions of his original characters. It is well-written, though not regularly updated - the last wait was a few months long, but worth it.

  • Comments: One of the best crossovers I every read, the author perfectly fuse the Batman mythos in the Game of Thrones world.

The Black Prince by cxjenious.
  • Recommended by Meimay, Ragnar The Semi Green
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter.
  • Synopsis: He remembers being Harry Potter. He dreams of it. He dreams of the Great Other too, a beast borne of ice and death with eyes red as blood and an army of cold dead things. He is the second son of the king, a spare, but his fortunes change when secrets rather left in the dark come to light, and Westeros is torn asunder by treachery and ambition. Winter is coming, but magic is might.
  • Comments: The best crossover of Harry Potter/Game of Thrones you can find on ff.net. Great characterizations, good writing (sometimes there are still some misspelling but nothing too major) and a great potential, this fic is a must read.

A Song of Metal and Marvels by Mr Chaos

  • Recommended by Clato Lawa
  • Status: A Man of Iron: Complete. A Crack of Thunder: Ongoing.
  • Crossover with: Iron Man for book one. Marvel Universe for all other books.
  • Synopsis: Antony 'Tony' Stark is the arrogant cousin of Ned Stark whose made his fortune crafting fine weapons for the lords of Westeros. Tony leads a joyful life, doing what he pleases and leaving the politics of the realm to others. But when violent attack nearly ends his life, Tony decides to take action and creates a hero for the people to rally around... a knight known as Iron Man.
  • Note: Other Marvel characters appear in later chapters, starting with Wolverine as a Dothraki bodyguard.
  • Comment: Less crossover and more fusion fic, the story imagines a world where Westeros is filled with familar Marvel characters and how this would alter the story. Those thinking it will simply be a retelling of Game of Thrones are in for a surprise when events begin to quickly diverge, including Tony legitimizing Jon Snow and making him his heir while Tyrion takes Sam as his squire, thus eliminating the Wall plot for much of the first book, Arya apparently being scouted by the Brotherhood of Mutants, and the Mountain suffering two defeats at Iron Man's hand. The author has promised that by Book 2, entitled A Crack of Thunder that events will be radically different with a much altered War of the Five Kings.

Honor and justice, peace and prosperity, freedom and glory, chaos and strife, and a mere reunion with a lost sister... all these ambitions and more lie in the land of Noros. However, the only way to make these ambitions reality is to play the Game. The Game of Deceit, Treachery, and most of all, the Game of Thrones.
    • Also available in comic format, first page here. It also has extensive side-material, detailing the traits of all factions, a map of the continent, among others.
    • An amazing story, with a high amount of tension that makes you want to just keep reading it and hope it update fast. Fortunately, it does. Although there are certain canon characters that are deliberately made to be different, it has used all of them very nicely. Though there are OCs, all of them are interesting, which is quite an achievement. Very much recommendable. — Feng Lengshun

  • Crossover with: Fate/stay night
  • Synopsis: A humorous take on what happen if FSN Mordred, Shirou and Arturia ends up in Westeros after their deaths at certain points in their lives. Featuring a Gender Bent Shirou and Arturia.
  • Comments: "What happens when a different person is appointed in one of the major roles. Crack."
    • Although the author still has some spelling mistakes the overall plot is dynamic. Mordred doesn't let being a girl faze him, he's the Warrior Queen and antihero. while Arthuria or Arthur is Noble Exiled Prince empathize on NOBLE. But my favourite was definitely Shirou, who although more flawed and weak between the two still keeps his core of heroism. Although currently he's more Goddess of the Hearth, I get the feeling there more in store for him. winks ;D

Joffrey from Game of Thrones replaced with Octavian from Rome by Hotpoint
  • Recommended by Mr Terrorist, tpyrene
  • Crossover with Rome
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: "Basically it's a tale of what the mind of the mildly sociopathic boy genius Octavian from HBO's Rome gets up to in the body of the violently psychopathic boy imbecile Joffrey from HBO's Game of Thrones."
  • Comments: An interesting fanfic where Octavian from HBO's Rome ends up in the body of Joffrey before the first season. As a result of this, the new Joffrey (who fans nickname as [JOctavian]) is much nicer and smarter than the original Joffrey, which earns him the support and respect of the Starks who not only approve of his engagement with Sansa but also since the order to assassinate Bran never happened due to the original Joffrey's actions, the animosity between the Starks and Lannisters never happened which leads to both families to work together to help Joffrey rule Westeros.

Hadrian Lannister Lion of the Rock by Sage 1988
  • Recommended by Troper/mangamanic
  • Crossover with: Harry Potter.
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Reborn as the eldest son of Tywin Lannister, Hadrian must shoulder the responsibilities of being heir to Casterly Rock and play the game of thrones. As war takes hold will he rise to win the game or will he be crushed by the factions all around him. Rated M to be safe.
    • Not exactly a high quality story. Hadrian is a first degree Marty Stu who is always successful in any task he goes for, with few to none setbacks in any of his plans. Rhaegar (who apparently was one of Hadrian's best friends) is leather-pantsed to a ridiculous degree, with him and Lyanna being in true love with each other and Elia fully in on the plan to get the Prince Who Was Promised, while Robert gets the Ron the Death Eater treatment. Even though it is repeatedly indicated that Jon has the Stark looks, Hadrian barely requires a few seconds before realising he is Rhaegar's son, and only needs a short conversation with Ned to convince him to join a conspiracy to put Jon on the Iron Throne. Oh, and Catelyn Stark undergoes another Ron the Death Eater process, turning her into a hateful, shrieking bitch that actually is more similar to Cersei Lannister than her canon self.

  • Pairings: Stannis/Azula
  • Synopsis: The 'Butcher of Shipbreaker Bay' arrived in the dead of night, during the war of the Usurper. Lifting the siege of Storm's End, and sinking the Redwyne fleet, were her first actions in this brave new world. For Azula Baratheon, they would not be the last. She played, the Game of Thrones, to win...
  • Comments: Putting Princess Azula in the middle of the cutthroat scheming and politics of Kings Landing is an idea that works so well it's amazing that more fics haven't been written with this premise. The author bounces back and forth across the timeline between Azula's arrival at the tail end of Robert's rebellion and the main timeline of the novels. Azula's presence causes drastic changes in the way events in Westeros unfold, and it is beautiful to see.

  • Pairings: Mike!Edmure Tully/Carolyn!Myranda Royce, Ned/Catelyn, Brynden Tully/Roslyn Frey, Jon Snow/Mya Stone, Arya/Gendry?, Bran/Myrcella
  • Synopsis: an American engineer called Michael Killian awakes after a night drinking binge in the body (and mind) of Edmure Tully, heir to Riverrun. Using his extensive engineering (and scientific) knowledge, Mike begins to work in making life for the people of Westeros easier, by bringing new innovations like better agricultural equipment or the printing press. He soon discovers the existence of a second American, Carolyn Johnson, a nurse who has become Myranda Royce and has started to build up her own trade ventures and her modern medicine knowledge to become one of the most important women in the Seven Kingdoms. Between the two of them, they begin to work on helping the Seven Kingdoms modernize for whatever may happen in the future, but they do not know that the future may happen much sooner than they expected...
    • While there are parts of the premise that are somewhat tough to believe - how fast Mike introduces firearms to his army, for example - it is quite the interesting work. If anything, the worst thing that this can be accused of is that updates were not chronologically organized, and Retcons were applied to fit readers' suggestions or other ideas. Still, it is well worth the time to read.

Sean Bean Saves Westeros by High Plains Drifter
  • Stories:
  • Recommended by Milarqui, Pyre Vulpimorph, chankljp, tpyrene
  • Status: Ongoing; "Book 1" and "Book 2" complete, "Book 3" planned.
  • Pairings: Sean/Catelyn, Robb/Roslin Frey, possibly Arya/Olyvar Frey.
  • Synopsis: after the last day of filming Ned Stark's scenes for Game of Thrones, Sean Bean receives a present: an armor to "protect" him in his next job. He goes on a drinking binge to say goodbye to the other people he has met at filming, and when he wakes up the next day, he does so in White Harbor the same day Ned Stark is killed. Sean Bean must then act in the role of his life as the real Ned Stark, not only to bring Ned Stark's family back together, but also to bring peace to Westeros before the Others appear and the Long Winter begins.
    • It is probably one of the most interesting ideas to ever be written in the field of A Song of Ice and Fire's ISOT stories. The fact that Sean must use his wits, what he has learned in a lifetime of acting and every bit of knowledge he remembers from the books (passing it off as things the Old Gods have told him) only adds to the awesomeness of the story. His actions also change many things, preventing problems that happened in the books and TV series from ever taking place - such as marrying Robb as soon as possible. His inner monologues about how different things are to when he did them in the series are also quite hilarious, such as when he mentally compares every person in Westeros to their actor or actress equivalents.
    • Also contains one of the most morbidly hilarious deaths Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish could ever suffer: stabbed by Sandor Clegane, who pisses into his mouth as he dies, just before he can escape King's Landing with Sansa.

As it turns out, all three are already inhabited ... and by humans no less! Book 1 follows the adventures of The Company on just one of these three worlds - a world of swords and sorcery, of thrills and chills, of Ice and Fire ...
  • Comments; The first part of what will 'at least' be a trilogy, Django has said future installments will cross over more with 'Lord Of The Rings' and 'Warhammer Fantasy'.
    • Word of God says it is based on a mix of both the book and the show universes, along with a few other changes for the sake of the story
    • A very interesting story with a good plot and several important themes. In particular, it explores the morality of the actions of every faction (particularly those of the Earth humans towards the Westerosi, whom they regard as primitive and are consequently treated and regarded like colonial subjects). It also explores the many, many instances of Values Dissonance between a medieval society and a 22nd century spacefaring modern society, as well the sharp divide among the Westerosi caused by the arrival of a more advanced civilization between those who wish to modernize and those who wish to remain as they are, with compelling arguments on both sides. Overall, very well written and thought provoking.
