     Prologue: Hear Me Roar

Chapter 1: That’s Life

  • "Eureka!"Moment: Both for his test of the A Rc Blue Reactor, [Spoiler: And the 32nd test of his prosthetic arm].
Narrator: "He raises his arms to the air and begins to celebrate, elation taking over his being…"
  • Academy of Evil: Downplayed, though may change in the future. Aldera is a place so noxious for the well-being of any discriminated group that could qualify as it.
  • Ace Custom: While explaining the importance of his work to his son, Hisashi shows the specialized support equipment for the heroes.
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Exaggerated and Justified. Both of his parents are missing from his life, though Hisashi had been dead for a good amount of time; while Inko…
  • A Mistake Is Born: How Katsuki verbal denigration of the protagonist starts, mentioning that that was the reason why Inko left and Hisashi "killed" himself (Mocking the Mourner).
  • Barbaric Bully: This version of Katsuki Bakugo. To the point of maiming the protagonist only for hitting him back, after dissing his father.
  • Betrayal by Inaction: Roundhouse. To the horror of Izuku [[Spoiler: And his arm.]]
  • Blessed with Suck: Discussed, as Izuku wonders what is great about heroes.
  • Child Hater: Defied, with a jackhammer. Izuku wonders if his father hates him for not manifesting a quirk, to Hisashi's horror.
  • Child Prodigy: Izuku, overlapping with [1]. His flashlight and the continuation of the Arc Blue generator are the perfect demonstration of it.
  • Collateral Damage: Downplayed. When testing, Izuku mentions it.
Izuku: “And hopefully won't destroy the house.”
  • Cooldown Hug: After the horrible question, Hisashi hugs his son to reassure him that he loves him, without question.
  • Curious as a Monkey: Izuku inquires his father about his job and why he is busy most of the time.
    • In chapter 5, Mei who was more focused on how slim the holoprojector was.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: How Chapter 1 ends. Bakugo invades the Midoriya household, and (with the help of his lackeys) maim brutally Izuku to the point of losing his arm, only for fighting back.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Discussed by the protagonist. Defied, and hard in the first chapter. By chapter 7, it is also referred by the protagonist.
Izuku, recording his musings:"But maybe… maybe this time, they will finally acknowledge me..."
  • Gone Horribly Right: Subverted. His "success" with the whole apparatus, leaving some "victorious" scorch marks.
Izuku: "If anything, it works far too well."
  • Homemade Inventions: Mosty Izuku, but with the work left by Hisashi.
  • Hypocrite: Again, Bakugo. Before beating to an inch of his life, he claims to Izuku that it is against school regulations running in the halls. By Chapter 8, All Might is shown as one.
—>All Might: "Honestly, I think having a quirkless boy in this event is dangerous for the boy. This is not simply a game, there are points in the competition where he could be seriously injured, and he clearly doesn’t consider his own safety as much as he should be. I think for Young Midoriya’s wellbeing, he should be forced to withdraw from the tournament."
  • It's All About Me: Played with. In order to de-escalate things, Izuku simply decides to play on Katsuki Ego. That is until Bakugo [2].
  • Killing Intent: The only answer from Katsuki after the response of the protagonist.
  • Lack of Empathy: Subverted, partially. Bakugo's lackeys mention how it is a tad extreme what he is about to do. To no avail.
  • Mess of Woe: At big scale. Though not diagnosed, his actual family and social situation is seen in his home state of quasi-disrepair.
  • Missing Mom: It is shown that Inko left Izuku to his own devices at a certain age, also mentioned by Katsuki.
  • Pure Energy: The Arc Blue project. Proposed By Hisashi, and continued by Izuku.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Mentioning Hisashi in an insult is this for Izuku. To the point that he punched Katsuki for it.
  • Ray Gun: After the success of the 572 iteration of the Arc Blue reactor, the test flashlight (called Nexus apparatus) that was connected was turned into one of these accidentally. Used futilely against Katsuki when the latter attacked Izuku in his home. Eventual iterations were functionally similar to the Repulsors of the [3] Franchise.
  • So Proud of You: Downplayed, as Hisashi is trying to explain to his son that he is NOT defective. Played straight with Izuku, as he steps into his father's role as an inventor, continuing his projects like "Arc Blue".
    • And by chapter 7, Power Loader seems to have adopted this mindset when speaking to Midoriya.
  • Suicide is Shameful: While taunting Izuku, Katsuki pushes one of his buttons hard by mentioning that his father was a coward for taking his own life.
  • Taught by Experience: Referred by Izuku, while (unsuccessfully) escaping the brutes of his school.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: While mentioned by a small child such as Izuku, it is defied by the end. Nevertheless, it is a wrong assumption by society as part of their Fantastic Racism to consider those with strong quirks to be Hero material. In chapter 9 this is how Izuku breaks the ice with Kaminari, questioning him about how much is his voltage output. Also Discussed by Izuku, as he would measure that if he had that quirk.
  • Why Did You Make Me Hit You?: To the extreme, Bakugo mentions casually that Izuku himself made him maim him.
  • Workaholic: Poor Hisashi, most of the time working, to the chagrin of his family.
¡Chapter 2: Fragile
  • Asleep for Days: Three days of Coma, after the brutality suffered.
  • Bearer of Bad News: Doctors for Izuku.
Izuku: "He remembers that smile. It's the same smile the doctor had before they delivered bad news."
  • Blinded by Rage: The Slime Villain after seeing Izuku? He is absolutely.
  • Career-Ending Injury: His amputation in a nutshell. [Spoiler: It gets better.]
  • Celebrity Superhero: All Might, to the point that he can't answer some questions of the traumatized protagonist.
  • Damsel out of Distress: The male variant. By the time All Might reaches Izuku, he already dealt with the villain.
  • Deep Breaths Reveals Tension: And how. Knowing that you lost three days, and had to be put into surgery, may stress any sane person.
  • Despair Speech: What inadvertently became of the answer of All Might.
Toshinori:"Be realistic, kid. You simply aren't built for that line of work. Perhaps you can find something a bit more… you speed… to do with your life."
  • Do Not Go Gentle: On the precipice of despair; Izuku decides to not give in and show the world what he is made of.
  • Empty Shell: Izuku, before meeting All Might.
  • Fireball Eyeballs: Or more of Fireball Nostrils, as Hisashi is frustrated with his equipment, he starts exhaling fire through his nose.
  • Gave Up Too Soon: Mentioned by his father when dealing with a challenge. Also defied, as both Midoriya's rise up to the challenge.
Hisashi:” This is the easiest option…"
  • Green-Eyed Monster: One of the arguments the "efficient" pair try to use against Izuku.
  • High-Voltage Death: Used against the Slime Villain [Spoiler: Twice].
  • I Found You Like This: How the chapter begins, after the flashback. Izuku waking up from the uncomfortable place he is, with the female doctor asking him to remain calm.
  • Impairment Shot: How Chapter 1 ended, and partially how chapter 2 starts. Izuku is still hazed after the brutal attack of Bakugo.
  • It's All My Fault: Partially. The protagonist knows that the reason why the Slime Villain got free was him latching onto All Might's leg.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Saving Bakugo? Only earned the protagonist a reprimand by the useless heroes, and a headbutt from Bakugo.
  • Old Shame: The price of giving up, at least for Hisashi. As well as living without knowing your potential.
  • Only Sane Man: In some way, in this chapter we can appreciate how quirk-centric the world has become to the point of excusing [4] for the heroes. With Izuku being the one of the few capable of rising above that way of thought.
  • People Puppets: How the Slime Villain tries to escape All Might with the protagonist's body.
  • Police Are Useless: Bordering with [5], as both officers Seno and Shimamoto, after hearing Izuku's testimony, try to blame him for creating his equipment.
  • Reasonable Request Rejected: Izuku's [6] is that if anyone without a quirk can make a difference. [[Hypocrite All Might's]] answer is notoriously negative.
  • Save the Jerk: Discussed by Izuku, as to why save Bakugo. Saving him will always be this.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Izuku's way of thought in this story. Reinforced after all the stuff of chapter 2.
  • Tame His Anger : Mentioned by Hisashi, as he apologizes to Izuku.
Hisashi: “…And I should try to control myself better."
  • The Caretaker: Referred by the doctor, when handling the recovery programs to the protagonist, as someone is paying for his medical expenses till he recovers.
  • This Cannot Be!!: Played for drama, as Izuku is unable to immediately deal with new reality of lacking his right arm. [[Spoiler: Played straight for many times Kan tries to take Izuku out of the competition after witnessing his technological prowess.]]
  • Unable to Cry: The sob-less kind for Izuku, after the grim acceptance of his new status.
  • Worrying for the Wrong Reason: Downplayed and Justified for child Izuku. As he idolizes his father, seeing him angry might be a hard sight for him.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain:
Aldera's Teacher: "…You never stood a chance, you were done before you even started".

¡Chapter 3

  • Artificial Limbs: His project, taking his time to develop both the chassis and wiring for it, in order to use also his Arc Blue reactor.
  • Brain/Computer Interface: Played straight. The first itteration was a circlet like interface with a response lag of 2.3 to 12.5 seconds, [Spoiler: with the second being a direct installation of a neural port for the operation of his arm.]
  • Cope by Creating: In order to deal with the stress of the amputation, Izuku took the development of a prosthesis as a project in order to cope with it.
  • Cosmic Plaything: Partially for laughs, after testing 8 times his prothesis, Izuku got a response in the form of a twitch from one of the fingers. The middle finger.
  • Exceeded the Goal: Subverted, as his intention is to make a fully functional replacement limb. [Spoiler: Though, to his frustration, he still can't feel with it.]
  • Forging Scene: How Chapter 3 starts, as Izuku works the brass needed for his new project.
  • Freshman Fears: Averted within reason for the online school, as Izuku doesn't need to socialize with other students, as well as can keep quiet about his status.
  • Getting Hot in Here: Summer isn't merciful for Izuku. Worse with all the heat-emitting equipment of his garage.
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: Essentially his prosthetic arm. It being an [7] gamble that every step could waste his little time.
Izuku:"I suppose that is what you get for breaking the proverbial mould, but somebody had to do it.
  • Override Command: Enforced, as Izuku needed to end the [8] against the protection protocols.
  • Phantom Limb Pain: While having a little confidence crisis, Izuku is stopped by an episode of the mentioned.
  • Point of No Return: Option Gamma. See [9].
  • Race Against the Clock: How Izuku sees this project while also needing time in order to develop a portfolio for his application to the Support department.
  • Self-Surgery: Performed onto his own axillary, radial and musculocutaneous nerves, in order to control his new prosthetic arm. All done with a Drill.
  • Skipping School: Partially for the protagonist. After his "mishap", he left Aldera to online schooling, giving him time for his projects.
  • Skip the Anesthetic: Averted and hard. After being warned by Dr Chikafuji about the before mentioned episodes of [10], Izuku was prescribed with painkillers, which uses during any of those. [Spoiler: Also, during his [11] for the instalation of the neural port.]
  • Tears of Joy: The first instance of happiness after everything. Izuku's experiment worked, and though he can't feel with his new [12], he got back his right arm. Ending chapter 3.
  • You Are Better Than You Think: Wondering why he keeps up with everything that has happened evolves into this. [[Spoiler: In Chapter 6, Hatsume indirectly refers to it.]]
Izuku:"Or maybe… maybe it isn't to prove it to them…Maybe this is to prove it to yourself."

Chapter: The Man With the Metal Hand Book 1:Preparations

Chapter 4: One Small Step

  • Absent-Minded Professor: Downplayed for Izuku on the line for the exam. Being so focused on it made him forget he was in the front.
  • Alien Geometries: Or as the protagonist put.
Izuku: "The Inner building was a labyrinth of hallways and stairs, twisting and turning in a chaotic harmony that threatened to swallow Izuku into its halls."
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: In Izuku's head, many disbelieve that he is capable of going and doing things. [[Spoiler: Repeated with Power Loader, when he mentions he doesn't believes Izuku's arm was directly connected to his nervous system.]]
  • Body Horror: Though amazed by Izuku's personal creation, it is notorious that the explanation of how he reduced the response delay had horrified Majima sensei.
Power Loader:"Midoriya… Are… are you telling me that you connected this… directly to your nervous system?"
  • Cassandra Truth: Everything said, the evidence made the presentation retroactively into this. With Majima admiting that he was wrong for doubting Izuku in his [[Spoiler: Acceptance Letter.]]
  • Concept Art: The First half of the Practical exam, as the students must design a support equipment based on a prompt.
  • Defeat Means Respect: An intellectual example. Both his project and invention had been impressing to start with, but it is the method and the process that Izuku took that truly impressed Power Loader, taking extreme care to test many of his inventions.
  • Did You Actually Believe...?: A non-villanous case. Izuku is so offended by Power Loader that mentions it.
Izuku:"So you just asume I came here, lied about my invention, and then lied directly to you? You think I would be that stupid?"
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Power Loader's reason to doubt Izuku. He finds ridiculous that a 15 years old child had success where others failed. [[Spoiler: Also in Chapter 5, as Izuku finds out the Sport Festival is. —>Izuku:"In other words, it's a marketing scheme."]]
  • Freak Out: Played for drama, but lastly subverted. Though it is read in the previous chapter how affected Izuku was by his experience, being in the crowd seems to almost trigger a panic attack.
  • Genki Girl: Hatsume. Or as Izuku describes: "She has a manic smile on her face."
  • Harmless Freezing: Again, defied. Every since his amputation, Izuku loathes the cold, as it makes his stump ache.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Having a panic attack, and thinking that he already failed, Izuku could say that the exam was this for him.
  • I Work Alone: A consequence of his unhealthy though justified mindset.
Izuku:"I don't need anyone pretending to care about me."
  • Motherly Scientist: Downplayed a bit with Hatsume. As the story focuses more on her as a person, instead of her quirks.
  • No Peripheral Vision: Izuku, while fixing his arm, didn't saw Hatsume peeking.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Ectoplasm and Power Loader during the exam, the first by double checking Izuku's identificaction (though might be Izuku's bias talking), and the second by blatantly disbelieving that Izuku create his prosthetic and surgically installed it all by himself. They get better.
  • Rage Quit: Izuku's non-dignified exit from the exam.
  • Red Herring: Refered verbally during his discovery of the true nature of the exam.
  • Secret Test of Character: The Practical Exam for the Support department.
Izuku:" This isn't a test of our technical expertise at all. That's a red herring… that is what we show with the projects we brought from home!"
  • Shop Class: UA support department in a nutshell.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Izuku's answer to the design prompt. It being a reusable Concussion Frags. [In Chapter 6, we see that this becomes the core of his Festival Project. Needing something effective against anything that UA may prepare. By Chapter 7, the Frags were incorporated as a counter to Todoroki's ice.]
  • Smile of Approval: After giving his exam to Majima sensei, Izuku peeks a small smirk on the face of the teacher.
  • Snow Means Cold: Defied. Though it is a cold morning of February, there is no mention of snow.
  • Staredown Faceoff: Intended by Izuku, after Hatsume startles him, with his anxiety not helping. [[Spoiler: Repeated with more success with Power Loader, after the mentioned doubted of his inventive prowess.]]
  • Straw Nihilist: Inverted. Most thoughts in Izuku mind, while not creating, could turn him into one. Yet he finds the way to keep on going.
  • The Hero's Idol: Accidentaly done by Hatsume. Izuku, feeling absolute despair during the exam, glances the other 5 students that remained in the drafting station; and sees her, completely calm. Thus hinting him the nature of the exam. [Spoiler: By Chapter 8, this is Izuku to Kirishima. As he is a quirkless that managed something that the quirked could.]
  • Too Upset to Create: Defied, though the nightmares had worsened, Izuku seeks to distract himself with his work (and the exam) in order to not fall into despair.
  • Twinkle Smile: Though a stretch, the smile Hatsume shot Izuku after seeing his work could qualify as one. As taking interest in the greenette.
  • We Need to Get Proof: A genre-savvy Izuku knows of this, and prepares for that. Having recorded his 9 months of arduous work, he is more than ready to Power Loader's excepticism.

Chapter 5: Possibilities

  • "Anger Is Healthy" Aesop: Partially defied. Izuku likes how now anger seems more easy to manifest in his person, yet he admits the need of controlling it.
  • Appeal to Authority: Accidentally done by Power Loader, though with good intentions, as part of his [13]. The neural linkage is possible, but risky.
  • Big Red Devil: Downplayed with Hikari Kubo, the second place in the written exam. His skin is absolutely red, as well as having a heat resistant quirk.
  • Cathartic Scream: Less of a scream, and more of a rant. How most of the time Izuku's anger manifests.
  • Dangerous Workplace: Subverted as it is a school, though the Shop can still be a risky place if the students go without guidance.
  • Declaration of Protection: Downplayed with Power Loader. While impressed with Izuku's work, he also wants to keep an eye on him, so any eventual project will have a lower risk to the boy.
  • Friendly Scheming: Though not in the strict sense of the word, Power Loader can sense some scheming by Izuku by how intense his questions relating
  • Impossible Task: The protagonist ambition. Izuku's wish to win is seen as one by Majima-sensei. [[Determinator Not that it will stop him]].
  • Inspirationally Disadvantaged: Or as Izuku puts.
Izuku:"Time to level the playing field."
  • I Should Have Been Better: The protagonist truly regrets his abrupt exit from the exam.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Though not to the point of [[Jerkass]], Power Loader's observations came off as condescending and insulting; though he is ultimately right in his assesment of both Izuku's capabilities and his recklessness towards his own wellbeing.
  • Life-Saving Encouragement: Another downplayed example, as the Admitance letter renewed hope inside Izuku.
  • Loophole Abuse: Something that both canon and in-story Izuku is shown to do. IN this chapter, a simple rule in favour for the support course became his angular stone for his plan.
Izuku:"Support Course student may bring as many support devices as they would like into the festival, so long they build the devices themselves. That one simple sentence contained infinite possibilities."
  • Motor Mouth: Hatsume, to a fault. Bombarding an uncomfortable Izuku with who knows how many questions about his arm…
  • Psychologist Teacher: Played straight with Hound Dog, and shown partially with Power Loader, as he denotes the high interest Izuku is showing to preparing for the School Festival.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: For Power Loader at least. Izuku is dumbfounded when he heard from the hologram that Power Loader apologizes to him for not believing in his ability.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Downplayed with Hatsume, as she is more interested in the holoprojector than the fact that she got into one of the most prestigious schools in that world.
  • Talk About the Weather: As well as appreciating it, Majima considers the first day of class as having a favorable weather.
  • Voiceover Letter: Inverted, as it is a Holographic message.
  • What If?: Asked in verbatim by Izuku.
Izuku:"But what If they don't win? What if the hero course not only loses, but loses so spectacularly that it can't be ignored anymore?"

Chapter 6: Power

  • Adults Are Useless: Mentioned to the WHOLE hero society by Izuku. [[Spoiler: During chapter 9, this is part of Power Loader verbal lashing. He points out how Izuku tends to isolate himself from everyone, worse towards the faculty. Instead of looking for help for his injuries (for example), he would rather tend them himself than ask the nurse.]]
Izuku:" I never had a hero… I never wanted a hero… all I wanted was for someone to do something."
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Mei, with her tonned down [14] after Izuku's [15].
Mei:"…But what does that have to do with building?"
[[Spoiler: During chapter 14 Majima does this with Kan as the victim. —>Power Loader:"So, you’re saying that because their quirks are destructive, it excuses them losing control and brutalising their opponents?"]]
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Hatsume, at least in Izuku's mind. Since the Gossip started after he told Mei about his status.
  • Break the Haughty: What the bullies think they are doing to Izuku.
  • Break-Up/Make-Up Scenario: How chapter 6 ends in a downplayed form. Hatsume promises herself that she will fix things with Izuku… once she learns how to.
  • Building Swing: Another of Izuku's musings towards Sero's quirk. Also implying increased agility from him, putting into a serious disadvantage.
  • Bully Brutality: After entering the class, the protagonist is victim of one. Having dealt with Bakugo made this feel weak, though it left him harmed.
  • Bully Hunter: Not a person, but more of a policy based on this trope; with UA being highly intolerant of segregation acts, as well as hate acts.
  • Duct Tape for Everything: Sero's quirk according to his file, Izuku muses that it being produced inside his own body, it must derived of an organic molecule.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: When stopped by the bully poise, this is Izuku's explanation for leaving.
  • Elective Mute: Deconstructed with Hatsume, as she is usually talkative. Stress provokes this on her.
  • Enemy Scan: Basically what Izuku does by asking the Heroic Course Records. Preparing for eventual confrontations.
  • Epiphany Therapy: Incredibly, Mei again. After her [16], she gives Izuku a much needed talk of how it doesn't matters if he has a quirk or not, in order to be an inventor.
  • Escape from the Crazy Place: Essentially this when Izuku manages to leave behind the bullies.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Another wound in Izuku's psyche, taking bad the thought that Hatsume could have started the [17]. [[Spoiler: She did not.]]
  • Failsafe Failure: The spring system for the project. Still the protagonist finds the positive out of it.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: One of the Mech suit add-ons. Used with efficiency during the Festival.
  • Gang of Bullies: UA isn't Immune to having these inside its institution, in this case of the [18] kind.
  • Graceful in Their Element: Izuku in a workshop.
  • Gut Feeling: Izuku's anxiety, previous algebra class. [Spoiler: By chapter 8, Midnight has one at the start of the Festival.]
  • Hell Is That Noise: Metal straining against metal. Which on the long run is a [19] in engineering terms.
  • Heroic R Ro D: An annotation for Denki's quirk is how he can only keep the high voltage for only 4 seconds. Abusing of this becomes Izuku's strategy against him.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Izuku's past left him with serious self-esteem issues. Considering his work "Below average".
  • Hey, You!: How the trio tries to dialogue with Izuku. Stating that they want to "Just Talk."
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Poor Majima. Dealing with both Izuku and Nedzu will kill his liver. Or as he mentions.
Power Loader:"Maybe it's time to break out that vintage whiskey he got for his birthday?"
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: A downplayed and inverted trope, as Ectoplasm coments the blood on Ikki Aoi shirt to see his reaction.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: The Bullies, thinking that Izuku takes himself as better than them.
  • It's Probably Nothing: Izuku downplaying his injuries, after Kubo inquires about them.
  • Jerkass Ball: Izuku's reaction to Kubo.
Hikaru Kub:"You know, you could stand to be nicer to people who just want to help you."
  • Kill It with Fire: What has the tape and vines in common? Izuku's answer sums it up.
Izuku:"Both are highly flammable under the right circumstances."
  • Magnetic Weapons: The [20] add-on brings some issues, as Izuku deals with how to simplify the mechanism. Mei proposes to use a magnetic rail (See Railgun).
  • Malicious Slander: All the rumours said behind Izuku's back. Again, interwined with [21], [[Spoiler: or Izuku's own Paranoia.]]
  • Never Be Hurt Again: While foreshadowed in previous chapters, this is where Izuku pronounces it. The need to be the Hero he never had, even if that means cutting many persons from his life. [[Spoiler: By Chapter 15, it is appreciated that Kan was the same, sadly mixing with the HPSC.]]
  • Nice Guy: Again, Hikaru Kubo.
    Hikaru Kubo:"…you didn't deserve that."
  • Not Quite Flight: Mech suit's propulsion boots. Though it can't lift on their own, it can boost him in the air. That, and working with the back thruster, can achieve Flight for a short amount of time.
  • Pile Bunker: A modyfied jackhammer is the solution for Izuku against both Kirishima and Tetsutetsu. Somewhat downplayed as it acts more like a focused [22] than an [23] weapon, as he intends to defeat them, not kill them.
  • Plant Hair: Shiozaki quirk, which overlaps with [24], in Izuku's musings.
  • Playful Hacker: How Izuku knew about the Battle trials, or at least how Nedzu implies how. [[Spoiler: Played straight with Hatsume during chapter 13 for her match with Iida.]]
  • Putting Pal In Principal: Nedzu, in a mischievous way. As he doesn't denies Izuku his request of battle information, while also having a kick from it.
  • Scavenged Punk: Extremely downplayed, or spiritually true. Izuku is using most of his previous projects data in order to build his new project. IN this case, he is using a toned down program for his experiment 573 (his prosthetic arm) for his [[Spoiler: Mech Suit]], but stating that it has more movable parts.
  • Shock and Awe: Denki's quirk. Making him the most dangerous to the protagonist, as he can fry his equipment.
  • Stern Teacher: Downplayed, as they do not punish physically, but won't doubt calling out the bad behaviour with many teachers in UA lean towards it. First seen with Ectoplasm and eventually with Power Loader.[[Spoiler: By Chapter 14, Aizawa is shown to be another one, willying to direct Bakugo towards a better path.]] —>Ectoplasm, after checking Izuku's injuries:"Which one of you is responsible for this?"
  • Super-Toughness: Kirishima and Tetsutesu's quirks, though the latter is more of [25]. Izuku analyses that the first is more mobile than the second, while lacking in durability.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Expressed by Hatsume, in her own quirky way.
Mei:"You interest me, especially that arm of yours. I want to see what you can do."
  • The Stool Pigeon: A rare positive example, as it was Hikari Kubo who pointed who were bulying Izuku.

Chapter 7: One Giant Leap

  • Acid Attack: Mina Ashido's quirk. And the reason why Izuku was treating the plates of his suit with Epoxy powder.
  • Action Dad: Inadvertedly, Power Loader (as a hero and surrogate father figure) is turning into one for Izuku.
Power Loader:" You are worth it, Midoriya. I’m just sorry that you can’t see it... Since you got here, Midoriya…you have done nothing but impress me…and something tells me you will only continue to impress me…just know that even if you have nobody in the audience rooting for you, that I always will be. Now go and win this tournament, Midoriya."
  • Always Someone Better: Another observation towards Momo, as she seems unable to think on her feet and employ her quirk.
  • Armored But Frail: In his mech suit, the protagonist is this. That doesn't change the fact of his [26].
  • Bad Vibrations: Each step Izuku takes with his Mech Suit is a case of this.
  • Big Entrance: Played straight for both Hero class during the festival. Averted with prejudice for the other courses.
  • Big "WHY?!": Inverted with Power Loader, as he asks Izuku why bother creating such equipment.
  • Bitch Alert: A male and late variant with Bakugo.
Katsuki:"I just want to say… I'm gonna win."
  • Building Is Welding: Averted with his Mech Suit. Though he would love to weld the armor plates to his suit, because of the lack of time he finds himself riveting them to the chassis.
  • But Thou Must!: Absolutely averted with the disqualification of Izuku by Nedzu, honouring the rules given to the boy.
  • Cathartic Exhalation: The only civil act Majima could do after the verbal showdown.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: More of Crouching Ditz, Hidden Master. Izuku doesn't want to attract attention, so he'll try to not win the first two events… With this line being how the chapter 7 ends.
  • Defends Against Their Own Kind: A non hostile version, in which Power Loader verbally defends his student from the scrutiny of the other teachers.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Played seriously, as Majima points how different is it Izuku's creation from a dangerous quirk such as Todoroki's or Kaminari's. [[Spoiler: By Chapter 10, mentioned again by Aizawa, when pointing Todoroki's ice wall.]]
  • Doublethink: Narrowly averted with Present Mic, as he was about to refute Majima's argument, but rather kept his quiet.
  • Dynamic Entrance: Partially Averted. Izuku entrance with his Mech Suit isn't fast nor disruptive to others, but it draws much of the attention towards him, for better or for worse.
  • Energy Absorption: Izuku's Shock Matrix, for every landing.
  • Expy: The protagonist armour is essentially a better produced [27] Mk I suit.
  • Fantastic Fragility: Kan's core for his argument of why Izuku should be disqualified, or retired from the competition.
  • Fragile Ego: Another weakness in Bakugo, as anyone can goad him into some nonsense by attacking his self-image.
  • Frazetta Man: Played partially with Izuku in his armor. As he needs to keep balance inside it, he needs to hunch a bit.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Averted with Katsuki. As Bakugo is on the edge of becoming a pariah in his very class, as his uselessly aggressive personality clashes with everyone.
  • Immune to Fire: Subverted, as he can mitigate some of Todoroki's fire with the suits plating and using a Fireproof suit underneath it. Hikaru Kubo partially plays the trope, as he has a Flame Resistance quirk.
  • I Regret Nothing: Or rather "I don't want to regret anything", Eijiro Kirishima (All-Loving Hero) mantra during his Anxiety filled previous moments to the festival.
Eijiro: "Living life with no regrets… That's what chivalry means to me!"
  • Jack of All Stats: A curious case in which it is played negatively. The very versatility of Momo’s quirk may confuse and slow her fighting pace, perfect as her counter strategy.
  • Matter Replicator: Momo's quirk according to Izuku. If properly trained, fighting her would be attempting to defeat the undefeatable.
  • Mini-Mecha: Izuku's mech suit, with blurrs the line between this and a [28].
  • Misplaced Retribution: Suberted with Shinso declaration of war. There are true [[Jerkass]] (like Bakugo) in the Hero course, but he is the exception.
  • Poor, Predictable Rock: When reviewing Bakugo, he mentions it. As the mentioned is a complete [29]. Also part of Izuku's [30] during chapter 10.
  • Revolvers Are Better: Not literally, but referred as an [31], as he wonders how he will install all the needed add-ons for his project.
  • Suit Up of Destiny: Subverted with Izuku putting his mech suit. Still, it is important as it marks the beginning of his year-long plan.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Izuku's observations of Shoto Todoroki, mentioning how his quirk has no drawbacks as it regulates his own temperature by its complete use.
  • Super Prototype: His mech suit. Incredibly advanced, and having worked since the moment he developed it.
  • Take a Third Option: In the form of a [32].
Izuku:"How do you hold multiple tools when you have no space? You make space."
  • The Faceless: Inside his armour, Izuku is this. As described by Kirishima.
Kirishima:"It was completely featureless, save for two cut eye holes."
  • Ther Is No Kill Like Overkill: Basically Present Mic's reaction about the Mech suit.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Kan first comment to Power Loader. [[Spoiler: Tacitally done in the form of [33] by most in the stadium after Momo's [34] speech.]]
  • Willifully Weak: The only information Izuku got from Todoroki was the recordings, showing only him using his ice.
  • You Are a Credit to Your Race: Subverted with Ectoplasm. He mentions in absolute disbelief if Midoriya truly built that, even considering his status. Majima, nigh his [35], retorts that he DID built it; for Ectoplasm to subtly [36] mentioning that he is impressed.
  • Your Traditon Is Not Mine: The first thought running through the heads of many teachers about Midoriya, after seeing him enter the coliseum.

Chapter: The Man With The Metal Hand , Book 2: The Sport Festival Part I

Chapter 8: Fighting Back

  • A Truce While We Gawk: Indirectly done by Kirishima, as he interrupts the possibility of Bakugo to attack Izuku while the Festival by commenting how impressive it was both his creation and him.
  • Conflict Ball: Attempted by Izuku towards Kirishima. It fails.
  • Elemental Barrier: Or rather wall, courtesy of Todoroki.
  • Enforced Technology Levels: Essentially mentioned by Midnight at the start of the race, as she personally wouldn't allow Midoriya compete with it.
  • Exposive Overclock: Though not precisely explosive, Izuku points out that it is ill-advised to abuse the [37] as it is overheating.
  • Herdhitting Attack: With less emphasis on attack, or damaging the students, but the tunnel and the event itself is to reduce the numbers of the competitors.
  • Improvised Parachute: The Absorption Matrix. Almost defied when a bunch of stones enters the springs, derailing Izuku's plan.
  • In a Single Bound: Izuku's jump through the [38], being less of a [39] and more of a calculated maneuver.
  • Intimidation Demostration: What the presentation of the suit had become for Sekijirou Kan.
Eraserhead:"It sounds to me like you are worried he might win, Vlad."
  • Land Mine Goes "Click!": A harmless example mixed with [40], as it is the last obstacle in the race.
  • My Rules Are Not Your Rules: Basically how Izuku deals with most of the Sport Festival. He couldn't care any less about the background chatter about how he deals with the challenges. Shown perfectly in chapter 8 and forward. [[Spoiler: In chapter 9, played perfectly straight with Izuku's startegy. Can't win the Cavalry Battle? Change it to a Free-for-all.]]
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Used by Majima sensei against Kan's arguments.
Power Loader:"Probably the same thing that would happen if Aoyama went full power on an opponent."
  • Not So Similar: Present in Kan's refutal, stating that the Hero Course has learned control for their abilities.
  • Onrushing Army: Essentially the other competitors, which adds to the chaos of the situation.
  • Organic Technology: Izuku's observation of Tenya Iida's quirk. He denotes also how he only runs in a straight line.
  • Rocket Jump: Said in verbatim, and done. The fact that the Absorption Matrix is automatic, and can absorb the worst of a landing from a height, Izuku uses it to do it. Making the best of the obstacle.
  • Schizo Tech: The Mech suit for many of its detractors.
  • Second Place Is for Winners: Deconstructed for Izuku. He doesn't want to attract attention, but needs to pass. Therefore, he needs not to do so great in the first events; just make sure he passes.
  • Smash Mooks: Again, the Zero Pointers; though less as an enemy, and more like an obstacle. Even worse as they are falling into a [41] via freezing.
  • Target Spotter: Metaphorically, this is what Present Mic became by the end of the chapter 8. [[Spoiler: By mentioning his quirklessness, he painted a big target on Izuku. Majima wasn't pleased with it.]]
  • The Big Race: The First event of the Sport Festival. Bordering a bit with [42], considering the eclectic cast of students.
  • The Three Faces of Eve: Midnight's character as the [43] seductive female, even referred nonverbally.
  • This Is Not a Drill: Straight for the maneuver used by Izuku to avoid most students and the wall. In this case, he sped enough to build up momentum, and take off using his [44] and [45] combo. To land, using his Absorption Matrix in his sabatons.
  • To Unmasque the World: Of the personal secret variant, as Present Mic's cheerful announcement revealed Izuku's quirklessness to the rest of the school. [[Spoiler: While also being the start of his challenges for the second and third event in eventual chapters.]]
  • Unknown Phenomenon: A mundane example, as well as Izuku's bane; as the race starts by the start of a tunnel, he mentions that anything is possible. He doesn't likes that a bit.
  • Walking Tank: Inverted with the Zero pointers. The Being a humanoid torso moving via treads.
  • We Dont Know Each Other: Most teachers relation with Izuku, with emphasis on Midnight as she is the one describing it.
  • Whip of Dominance: A playful example, as part of Midnight's image while also being an effective piece of equipment.
  • Why Did It Had To Be Snakes: Played for laughs by the end of the Chapter 8. Izuku laments that he has to be in a Team for the next event, the Cavalry Battle.

Chapter 9: A Stacked Game

  • Appeal to Worse Problems: An inversion. Izuku calms himself from his [46] by considering that it could be worse.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Todoroki, again to the duo. Though it is more being rude than dumb.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: Present Mic's announcement of Izuku's quirklessness. His slip out painted a big target on the boy, with was pointed by an enraged Power Loader; whom is warry of Izuku's trust issues.
  • Blackmail: Shinso being the victim of it by Ginji Maeda, a classmate of his. Reversed as Shinso mentions to Izuku that he too knows a little secret of said classmate.
  • Compelling Voice: Shinsho's quirk, as Izuku and the silver-haired classmate (Ginji Maeda) discovered. Izuku describes it as a sensation of swiming in syrup.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: Majima. Normally with the patience of a saint, Power Loader can tolerate a lot of things. Sheer idiocy isn't one of them, as Present Mic experimented as a maraca. Justified as it endangers his student.
  • Forbidden Fruit: Metaphorically used by its synonym [47] to describe Izuku's situation. There is nothing the teachers can do to solve said conundrum, only waiting.
  • Grin of Audacity: Bordering with [48], as Shinso describes.
Narrator:"Izuku’s smile turns slightly more smug, almost sinister, as Shinso can see ideas whirling like a hurricane behind the quirkless boy’s eyes."
  • House Rules: For the Cavalry Battle. One Rider and at least one horse, with the rider being unable to touch the ground.
  • Kidnapped by an Ally: Partially for Shinso after meeting Izuku, by comanding him to remove his armor. Then played straight with both [[Spoiler:Kaminari and Todoroki, to a point.]]
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: Nedzu's thought about the new situation of Midoriya, seeing it as an opportunity instead of a calamity.
  • Light 'em Up: Ginji's quirk, and partially for Aoyama. He himself isn't inmune to his own ability, to the point of getting blind by it.
  • More Insulting than Intended: Absolutely inverted. Izuku doesn't believes Shinso's quirk is disgusting… Rather, he thinks that it more than perfect, to the consternation of Shinso.
  • Rules Lawyer: Weaponized by Izuku, in order to change the notoriously stacked game against nonheros students. Specially in the Cavalry Battle.
  • Screw Destiny: Subverted. As Izuku explains, the team he formed with the help of Shinso is truly done in the Cavalry battle, with the reaction of its members being of unbelief. Logically, Izuku is ready to pull something.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Nedzu's way of teaching. Specially to Midoriya, as he finds him fascinating and wishes to see how he overcomes this new situation; to the mortification of Majima sensei.
  • Situational Sociability: Incredibly, Todoroki; as he nigh immediately accepted being in Izuku's team.
  • Taking You with Me: Basically what Todoroki thinks Midoriya did to them.
    Todoroki:"So, you sabotaged us?"
  • The Plan: Essentially this chapter focus, discussed by Shinso and Izuku.
  • Too Desperate to Be Picky: Lampshaded by Izuku as a non-edible example. Both Izuku and Shinsou can't be picky about their associates, the first as no one would team up with a quirkless; while the second for having a "Villanous" quirk.
  • Tricked into Signing: Both Kaminari and Todoroki were tricked into Izuku's team, mentioned by the former.
  • Underhanded Hero: Encouraged by Izuku to Shinso, in order to confuse his opponents from the activation of his quirk.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Almost averted by Shinso, as he knows that teaming with Izuku paints him a target. Nevertheless, after accepting this is the reality of the team, [[Spoiler: which includes Kaminari Denki, and Todoroki Shoto.]]
  • We Can Rule Together: Or rather, We can Win together by Izuku. As he promises a victory to Shinso.
  • Whats Going On: Todoroki, after his [49] by Shinso. [[Spoiler: Asked nigh in verbatim by Uraraka after the [50] of Kirishima's defeat.]]
  • Who Are You?: Tacitally done by Todoroki to both Shinso and Izuku.

Chapter 10: Changing the Rules

  • Association Fallacy: Bakugo's problem with Izuku extends to anyone who partners with him. Played for horror by chapter 13, as it is the reason of the brutal treatment of Hatsume during the fights during chapter 15 and 16.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Being under Shinso's control brought one to Bakugo in the form of the Slime Villain, freeing him from it. [[Spoiler: Still, it didn't stop izuku's team from robbing him all their points.]]
  • Disaster Dominoes: Essentially the first move in the battle. Using his Nexus Apparatus, the protagonist manages to tumble Ginji's team. Making them lose, and proving his theory.
  • Embarassing Nickname: Kacchan for Bakugo. It being one of his buttons. Used with absolute effectiveness by Shinso.
  • Face Your Fears: Essentially said by Aizawa after Izuku's tactic, to the dismayal of Vlad Sensei.
Aizawa:" Just admit it, Vlad…you’re worried that a quirkless student can beat the hero course here."
  • Gibbering Genius: Most of Izuku’s theory crafting to the exasperation of Todoroki.
  • Harmless Electrocution: Done by the Team after Izuku's [51], in order to jump start the reactor.
  • Hey, Catch!: Done to an unknown team (Team Yoshida), with the 10 million headband. [[Spoiler: Much to their chagrin.]]
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Averted with Izuku's team. They can't help but be stunned at his power move to the other teams. [[Spoiler: Straight with Bakugo for his own handwork (read Brutal beatdown) during chapter 13.]]
  • Not-So-Small Role: The plan requires Kaminari to Jumpstart the Arc Blue reactor after overclocking, which doesn't enthusiasm Denki as it reminds him how he was used during middle school. Izuku is more than ready to remind him of this.
  • Rocket Punch: Downplayed with the punch to Bakugo's nose. It doesn't have a rocket, but sure got power behind it.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: During the [52] for Kaminari, he remembers the wisdom behind the words of his hero dad.
Denki's Dad:"To me, that is the greatest problem with modern heroics. Everyone seems to think that you need to do something big in order to be a hero…but everyone always ignores the small things."
  • Are You Pondering What I Am Pondering: [[Spoiler: Played in a nonironic form. After understanding how Izuku will change the game, it is Shinso who begins to appreciate the thought process of the greenette.]]
  • That's an Order!: Implied, to Todoroki's disgust. He stills does it. [[Spoiler: Played straight with Bakugo's team, as he is used to everyone following his every whim.]]
  • The One Thing That I Dont Hate About You: Though Hate is extreme, All Might come close as he is apathic and somewhat antagonic to Izuku. Yet, he can't help but appreciate the work put by the boy.
All Might:"Midoriya…just what are you capable of?"
  • The Perils of Being the Best: Or rather the Benefits of being the best. Izuku explains that though having the 10 million points headband is a big target for the team having it, in the end it makes the game less of a free-for-all and more of a King-of-the-hill game.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Done by Izuku as a deterrent to other players, as well as reduce their numbers. At the cost of using most of his energy, as well as reducing the reactor capacity. [[Spoiler: Kan is not amused.]]
  • Well Intentioned Extremis: Vlad Sensei, as he can be [53]. [[Spoiler: Sadly defied, as most of his worries stem from his real boss the Commission President.]]
  • We Need to Get Proof: [[Spoiler: Izuku's plan depends on the rider rule, implying that a downed rider subtracts points from the game. He was right.]]

Chapter 11: To Prove Your Worth

  • Adrenaline Time: The last minutes for the teams, specially team Shinso.
  • Angst: Todoroki's issue with his fire, as he is bent on proving he can prevail without "his" fire.
  • Bad Boss: Bakugo, all way down. To the point that he demands Kirishima to stop thinking.
  • Clutching Hand Trap: An inverted example, as it is the hand of Kaminari clutching the headbands the trap.
  • Complaining About Complaining: Again, Kirishima. He might be [54], but even he is getting tired of Bakugo's attitude.
  • Complexity Addiction: Averted and discussed by the teachers when talking about Izuku's gambit. Kan tries to downplay Izuku's intelligence, by stating this could be Todoroki's or Shinso's. Aizawa refutes by mentioning how rigid Todoroki's thought process is. Majima also mentions that this is the kind of thought process he witnessed in Izuku.
  • Flat "What": Straight with Izuku about Todoroki. [[Spoiler: After being asked to clear the path with his fire, he rejects absolutely the petition, stating that he will never use (Endeavor's) fire. Hence, the consterned reaction from Izuku.]]
  • Haughty Help: While not a servant, this could be applied to Todoroki.
Izuku:"If you aren’t going to be of any help here, then make yourself useful and grab Kaminari!"
  • I Gave My Word: Fulfilled by Izuku, as Shinso mentioned.
  • Last Ditch Move: After being "trapped", Denki decided for an [55] [56] attack as one.
  • Metronomic Man Smashing: Monoma partially suffered one, which marked his elimination.
  • Not Cheating Unless You Get Caught: Partially true, but ultimately not. The event had strong rules that could be used in anyone's favor, though that doesn't forbids of Bakugo to rationalize that Izuku's team cheated.
  • Oil Slick: Straight with Mina's acid. Kirishima, in the new situation, asks her to clear some space; proposing her to use her less corrosive and most viscous acid in order to make their terrain slippery.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: Bordering with [57] for Asui, as part of her abilities. [[Spoiler: Denki counts on her attacking him with it, in order to apply some spark to the opposing team.]]
  • Power Copying : Monoma's quirk. Used with [[Sizeshifter Kendo's quirk]] to deal with another team.
  • Power of Trust: Denki. Being in Izuku's team is a positive experience for him, as Izuku is aware of his potential (though is a bit annoyed by his lack of exploration).
Izuku:" Which is exactly why I picked you…I just wish you had put the effort into understanding your quirk like I did."
  • Resolved Noodle Incident: The whole Battle situation, as Majima explains.
Aizawa:"So Midoriya equalized the competition… by removing the 10 million points, he made every other point more valuable… and made every team have a chance at flying to the top, no matter their skill sets... He just made every competitor equal... not bad."
  • Slow Clap: Not done, but Nedzu's reaction can be related to it; as he never thought that someone would change the rules that hard.
  • Sore Loser: Downplayed and justified to some extend to Monoma. All he wishes is for a moment in the spotlight. [[Spoiler: Chapter 12 presents Bakugo as this, as he delusionally keeps muttering that Midoriya cheated.]]
  • Stunned Silence: The Teachers reaction after the whole display of the previous chapter, even Present Mic.
  • Super-Hearing: Part of Shoji's abilities, which makes it difficult for Kaminari to sneak in.
  • Technician Versus Performer: Discussed by Monoma, as most of class 1-A have the flashiest and strongest quirks, while class 1-B have the most technical.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Bordering with [58], as Kirishima is willying to work WITH [[Jerkass Bakugo]] for the duration of the event. Also, Team Asui.
  • The Juggernaut: Izuku against Team Monoma. Using the taser against Kendo to keep moving.
  • The Load: Looked down by his classmates for his lack of [59] as well as his quirk's drawback, this is what Kaminari fears he is turning into. [[Spoiler: Defied, eventually as Denki finds the need to improve thanks to his team.
Kaminari:"Smarter than you could ever hope to be."
  • World Gone Mad: What Bakugo believes tacitly, as the world seems to have gone mad with Deku winning.

Chapter: The Man With The Metal Hand , Book 3: The Sport Festival Part II

Chapter 12: A Harsh Lesson

  • Am IA Toy To You: Basically what Izuku denounces Hatsume of treating him.
Izuku:"Haven’t you done enough to me?! First you pretend to be nice to me, then you give me help on my project, only to turn on me, and tell the entire class about me, and paint a target on my back!"
  • Anti Clima Boss : What most 1-A accuse Midoriya of eventually being, congratulating Kirishima on his luck. Kirishima knows best than to play on those delusions, as well as Kaminari and Ashido.
  • Assurance Backfire: While trying to assure her points, Momo gave Kirishima the ammo for a brutal rebuttal.
Kirishima:"He beat you in the last event, didn’t he? What does that say about you ?!"
  • Athletically Challenged : Mentioned by Iida in Kirishima flashback, as Hatsume (his opponent) is lacking training compared to him. Also applied to Midoriya.
  • Celibate Eccentric Genius: Used downplayed as part of Izuku's defense by Nedzu.
Nedzu:"He is intelligent, giftedly so…but he is unorthodox. He is adept at thinking outside of normal avenues…"
  • Character-Driven Strategy: Denounced by Mina to Bakugo, as the latter accuses his former teammates of being [60] to him. Bakugo doesn't [[Understatement take it well]].
  • Crippling the Competition: Kan's argument after the first match. While the first fear is that Izuku will kill most of the participants, it is this the lingering fear that might occur. Nedzu begs to differ.
  • Cub Stomp Battle: The first round against Kirishima. Izuku's [61] was pretty effective, defeating Kirishima at 25 seconds flat, to the horror of the spectators.
  • Defector from Decadence: Part of his [62] personality. Kirishima is absolutely disgusted with the hostile attitude from some of putting his opponent in his place. [[Spoiler: Shown again in future chapters, as he is one of the few to not diss against Midoriya.]]
  • Don't Ask: Desperately in Izuku's mind, as he grew exasperated with Hatsume's interest.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Or rather, worse than defeat… Kan worries what the president might try against Midoriya if he wins.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Most of the supposed caring message between the president and Vlad King. —>The President:"I am reaching out to you , Vlad, because I know you. I know that you see the problem, and want to fix it, just as I do, and get the Sports Festival back on track."
  • Forgiveness: Partially, but needed. As Izuku apologizes to Hatsume for his previous treatment. This in turns helps mend the relation, as well as join them in their craft.
  • Fun for Some: In universe this is what the Sport Festival is truning into. Some people like Kan are looking it with apprehension, as a quirkless is winning against the others. Played straight with Nedzu, as part of his fascination to the greenette.
  • Informed Self-Diagnosis : Izuku's revision of his equipment. The reactor lowered cap also made it more volatile, and the Heatsink wasn't working at peak performance. Still, the suit was good to go.
  • Jerkass Realization: Izuku lives through one (partially) after seeing how distressed Hatsume is through his rant. [[Spoiler: Hearing that Hatsume's mother is also quirkless makes him backpedal on the jerkassery.]]
  • Mighty Glacier: How Izuku visualizes his fight with Kirishima. [[Pilebunker Good he is prepared]]…
  • Noble Bigot: Momo. Downplaying most of Izuku's achievements and using the many biases in the Hero society while trying to maintain a facade of nobility, [[Spoiler: to the point of saying that Izuku BORROWED his mechsuit]].
  • No-Sell : Every energy blast that Midoriya releases to Kirishima. [63].
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Though a stretch; Nedzu considers Izuku this, as most of his attacks are strong, but not fatal.
  • Offing the Annoyance: Basically what the HPSC ordered Vlad King to do with Izuku, as the latter is basically mocking the other students. Kan tries to explain that he tried to no avail.
  • Pinky Promise: A geek version, in which Izuku promises Hatsume to examine his arm. [[Spoiler: Fulfilled as the only way they could calm Hatsume after her fight with Bakugo.]]
  • Reading The Enemy's Mail: Effusively mentioned by Nedzu as how was Izuku prepared against Kirishima.
  • Stop Saying That! : Powering through her own problems, Hatsume tries this to an enraged Izuku, as she didn't tell the class of his quirklessness.
  • Strolling Through the Chaos : An intellectual variant, as Nedzu drops the information of how he gave Izuku the hero student records, he can only enjoy the mayhem unleashed.
  • Suspiciously Missed Messages : An inverted example with Vlad, as the President calls him for the situation at the Festival.
  • The Fundamentalist : The HPSC President. She wants to keep everything as it is, so anything that might disturb that peaceful state must be eliminated.
The ¨President:"Frankly, Vlad King,” The President spoke, “I couldn’t give less of a shit about what Nezu loves…what I care about is the Hero Commision… my Hero Commission, and from what we have been gathering, at this moment, there is a growing sentiment in the public questioning the necessity of heroes."
  • The Needs of the Many : Another of the arguments from the HPSC President. To the point of threatening Kan of taking the matter on their hands for the good of Hero society.
  • The Perfectionist : To the worst extreme in Bakugo, as he can't accept being fallible.
  • Torment by Annoyance : Exaggerated. What Vlad King accuses Izuku of, seeing most of his moves as short-sighted and selfish.
  • Torso with a View : Invoked, but ultimately defied. [[Spoiler: Izuku's [64] did this to Kirishima, on a superficial level; which could count as a scrap. Though it still broke some ribs.]]
  • Unsportmanship Gloating : An inversion. As Izuku starts the match by saying how this is his only chance to prove a point to Kirishima.
  • Viral Marketing : Said in nigh verbatim by Kan, as he wonders how wrong it was Team Shinso's strategy, indirectly confirming Izuku's observations.
Vlad King:"The point of the Sports Festival was to show the prowess of the hero course! It was meant to instil the public with confidence for the future of hero society!"

Chapter 13: Powerless

Chapter 14: Inferior

Chapter 15: Stay Down

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking : The young Kan's rap sheet. Ironically, as the HPSC President points, there are no Murder charges.
HPSC President:"Assault, theft, grand theft, unlawful brandishing of a weapon, drug trafficking, smuggling and even some acts of vigilantism speckled in there."
  • Bloody Murder : Kan's quirk, which for him is a serious case of [71], as it only brought him problems.
  • Comically Missing the Point : Kan's supposed insult to the President, as she is not fazed by it.
  • Cornered Rattle Snake : Basically Mina, as most of Ibara's strategy was cornering her off-bounds. It was the quick application of Mina's agility and flexibility that avoided the defeat.
  • Even Evil Have Standards : Another point by the President, or Kan is unable to kill other people, or there are line he won't cross.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss : During their match, this is Bakugo for Mei; to the horror of the former and the spectators.
  • Hate at First Sight : Inverted, as the president is the first person to see Kan as someone with potential to do good. For her benefit, that is…
  • I Have No Son! : His young years problem. His quirk was seen as monstrous by his family as they kicked him out, disowning him. And repeated in most foster homes, stating being more of a demon than a kid.
  • Indentured Servitude : Essentially done with the young Vlad King, as the President erased most of his record, in order for him to follow the Heroic Course.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold : Shown by a young Kan, while wallowing about the testimony of his friend; failed to subvert to not be seen vulnerable in front of the President. —>HPSC President:"...so if you’re going to lie to me…at least try to be convincing."
  • Lightning Bruiser : Mina's strategy against Ibara during their match, avoiding most of Shiozaki's vines, save from her [72].
  • Man of Kryptonite : Mina is basically this to Shiozaki, as her acid can burn any vine of her. Making the latter strategy of restraining her opponents moot. Eventually it is shownthat Mina too suffers from her own acid.
  • My Greatest Second Chance : In some way, Kan's greatest first chance by a woman called Hanako Aiiuchi; used by the President to manipulate him.
  • Not So Stoic : Izuku. Seeing Hatsume being brutally attacked causes him to cry for someone to stop, while also having a flashback about his own attack.
  • Oblivious to Hatred : Played tragically for Hatsume. She was just minding her enjoyment of the events, Bakugo had other ideas.
  • Start of Darkness : How the chapter begins, with a younger Kan at the mercy of the HPSC President.
  • Thin-Skinned Bully : Used in Mina's accusation of Bakugo.
Mina:"I know your type, Blasty. You’re all bark. A big man with a fragile little ego. And any time something comes along and challenges that, it makes you feel even smaller than you already are."
  • This Is Unforgivable! : Izuku's cold fury against Bakugo. The chapter ends on a down note, as Bakugo wins by brutality and no one did something. This stokes the fire in him, proclaiming that only one match is what separates them from his fair retribution.
  • Violence Is Disturbing : Specially when they are minors. Bakugo stuns many people every time he fights against someone, as shown with Uraraka. This time, to the neurodivergent Hatsume.

Chapter 16: Excessive

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents : Inverted for the relation between [[Jerkass Endeavor]] and Shoto.
  • Awful Truth : What Hana seems to be finding out. [[Spoiler: Subsequent chapters scenes with her revolve around her seekng said truth.]]
  • Blatant Lies : Kan's argument to "calm" Majima.
Vlad King:"Of course we care about our students, all of our students and I am not denying that Hatsume’s condition is…troubling. But I am saying that there could be a million reasons for what Bakugo did, and I hesitate to believe that what Bakugo did there was malicious, at least without proof."
  • Blind Obedience : A curious example. Sero excuses the terrible display of his classmate as trusting their teachers' judgement.
  • Cannot Spit It Out : For Drama. When demanding Nedzu why didn't he stopped the match, he thought that if it became too dire, Hatsume would call it off. When Vald King jumps to the bandwagon, Majima tells this literally, as Hatsume can not speak when stressed, to the horror of the other teachers.
  • Disrupting the Theater : Played with, as the wonder duo is blocking the girls view of the Jumbotron, during their flirting.
  • Distracted By Sexy : Played straight with Bakugo's previous henchmen, approaching Hana's friend group.
  • Entertainingly Wrong : Hana Satou and her friends, as they believe that Hatsume was being [73].
  • Everyone Has Standards : Class 1-A towards Bakugo.
  • Fear Is The Appropiate Response : Straight after Mineta mentions that Mina will be fighting Bakugo, she feels the dread of knowing that Bakugo will be given free reign to attack her will all his strength and malice. [[Spoiler: After being spotted by Bakugo, Mina feels other thing. Rage.
  • Freudian Excuse : Blandly used by Kan towards Bakugo's attitude during battle.
Vlad King:"Bakugo has a destructive quirk by nature. It isn’t his fault that he can’t control it yet. It’s why we teach these students!"
  • I Am Not My Dad : Desperately done by Todoroki. Worse as most of his rudeness and attitude towards the others are a perfect reflection of [[Jerkass Endeavor]].
  • Improbable Weapon User : Downplayed by Stain, as part of his arsenal are some improvised knives. A longside his katana.
  • Insanity Defense : Inverted, as Toshinori attempts to use Hatsume's "eccentricities" as a defence for Bakugo.
  • Not What It Looks Like : The excuse both students and teachers use to rationalize Bakugo's destructiveness, stating they need the complete picture. Even when the picture is that of abully attacking someone smaller.
  • Oxymoronic Being : Izuku is metaphorically referred as one By Todoroki, as his quirklessness is both weakness for its lack of an inherent power and strength for the dismissal the others pay him.
  • Papa Wolf : Of the mentor kind. Majima truly hates his students being harmed. [[Spoiler: Starting this chapter (16), we can see how furious he turns towards those that mistreat his students (especially Midoriya), directing most of his anger to them and those that try to defend them.]]
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder : Majima's answer to Kan's excuse.
Power Loader:"...sounds to me like we aren’t talking about Hatsume anymore, Kan …"
  • Small Steps Hero : What Majima shows him to be towards this conundrum, as most of the staff lean towards the downplayed [74] territory.
Power Loader:"You seem to forget, Ectoplasm … that I am a hero. As good a hero as anyone else! But while all of you are trying to see with your hearts, I’m looking with my fucking eyes."
  • Stopped Dead in Their Tracks : Demanded to be done by Power Loader to Midnight against Bakugo.
  • The Extremist Is Right : Played straight with Stain, as he doesn't condone the brutal treatment of Bakugo towards Hatsume, as well as fueling his crusade against the fakes.
Stain:"Ignorant fools…that was no heroism. That was torture…plain and simple."
  • The Pig-Pen : Stain's first appearance.
  • The Power Of Potential : The second part of Aizawa's excuse, as he sees that the whole class 1-A has potential to be heroes. Getting annoyed about being questioned about his judgement.
  • Trainning Accident : Used to rationalize Bakugo's barbarism, as many consider that he is showing his stance against criminals and villains; with Hatsume as collateral damage.
  • Unfit for Greatness : Pointed out by Hana towards Bakugo's callous behaviour, only to be refuted by the boy duo.
  • Villain with Good Publicity : Basically part of Aizawa's rationale about why Bakugo is like this, stating he is a driven boy with childish personality. Majima is NOT amused, as he asks how such violent boy wasn't dealt with.
Eraserhead:"akugo is a driven student. He scored top marks in both the written portion and practical portion of the exam."
  • We Used to Be Friends : Or we used to be Tight, on the pickup lines the boys used with the girls to woo them. The girls are midly impressed, considering the brutality shown by the ash-blond.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer… : The chapter ends with Todoroki starting the match like the previous ones… With a humongous glacier.

Chapter 17: Promise

  • Armored Coffins : Izuku's mech suit almost becomes one. [[Spoiler: Defied thanks to the quickthinking of the greenette.]]
  • Attack Its Weak Point : Accidentally done by Todoroki, as his previous attacks removed in Izuku's left shoulder his fireproof clothes; which makes that part vulnerable to Todoroki's fire.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy : Subverted, as Hatsume is brilliant and dilligent; yet, Izuku finds this out as Hatsume easily completes his exposition lines.
  • Cheer Them Up with Laughter : Done straight with Kirishima's speech to Mina… In a darker tone, also done straight with Izuku to Mei, as he is using her natural curiosity for his prothesis to calm her down, while exposing how she might be feeling from his own experiences.
  • Defiant to the End : Mina. No plan, and absolutely scared… yet she fights on.
  • Didn't See That Coming : One of the biggest defects in Todoroki's is his rigid and quirk-dependant fight style. If someone can resist it, then he finds himself [[Pun frozen]] from the shock; just as what happened in his match with Izuku. Also, abused by the latter, as he took the time wasted shocked to attack.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu? : A tangent thought in Mina's mind. As Midoriya managed to fight and win against Todoroki, distracting her from her eventual match.
  • Dull Eyes Of Unhappyness : Denoted by Izuku when checking Hatsume, while reminding him his state after his amputation.
  • Elemental Punch : Indirectly done by Izuku, with the unwitting help of Todoroki, as the mech turned red hot thanks to the previous fire attack.
  • Elimination Catchphrase : Another case spliced with [75], to remind Todoroki of what they discussed previous chapters.
Izuku:"I told you before, Todoroki…that the day would come when your ice wouldn’t be enough…Well…that day? It’s right now!"
  • Exact Eavesdropping : How the chapter ends, Kan hears Midoriya and Recovery Girl speaking; with the former mentioning that as long as he has suit he can fight. Giving him an idea of how to neutralise him.
  • Exposition Victim : A strange still alive case. As Izuku exposes the feeling of helplessness to Hatsume after being brutalized, he inadvertedly lays open his whole ordeal from the first chapter to both Majima-sensei and Recovery Girl, who in turn look at him concerned.
  • Family of Choice : Majima sensei and Hatsume are inadvertedly this for Izuku; as he is growing comfortable with his teacher's presence in his life, while growing worried for the well-being in both mind and body for Hatsume.
  • Hopeless War : Basically Mina's eventual match. Nothing she can think of seems to be able to stop Bakugo… But lastly admitting that she is scared of her classmate.
  • How Is That Even Possible? : Most of Todoroki's attack had been neutralized by the protagonist, basically provoking him to question himself and then Izuku.
  • Implied Death Threat : Hopefully a non-lethal example… Unless…
HPSC President:"I am not going to say it again. Midoriya needs to be eliminated from the competition. I don’t care how, or why. Just get him out of it, and do it now !"
  • Must Be Invited : A verbal subvertion, as Izuku rudely asks for Hatsume while the nurse office, cutting his teacher that was doing the same.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore : The real reason why the President is angry at Vlad towards Izuku. The greenette is a menace to their way of life, showing that heroes are a superfluous project.
  • Off the Rails : Both literally, in the use of the [76] and figurately. As Izuku's quick thinking managed to avoid a sure defeat from Todoroki's attack, derailing most expectations from many viewers.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal! : From Izuku against Todoroki. The latter rants between questions, inquiring why Izuku is doing this, as well as if his father put the greenette to test him; and the former answers by stating that is his only choice to prove the world he is worthy.
  • Stock Sound Effect : Mixed with a inorganic case of [77]. The chapter starts with Todoroki launching his attack… Only for Izuku to resist and destroy the glacier to the amazement of the spectators.
  • Too Clever by Half : Inverted. As part of his taunting to Todoroki, he mentions how he overestimated the hero if those attacks were the best he could do.
  • Villain Has a Point : In this case, My Opponent Has A Point. Todoroki, after being played by Izuku into [[Spoiler: [[Hypothermia giving himself a serious case of hypothermia]]]] concedes that he was right… And that it will cost him hard. [[Spoiler: Unless he breaks his promise.]]
  • Villain Holds the Leash : The President to Vlad King. Every one of her phone calls is her demanding something of him, and as shown in previous chapters, Vlad is unable to defend himself.
HPSC President:"And King…don’t forget who pulled you out of that gutter."
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy : Downplayed with Izuku, though that might change, as Majima's approval is well received.

Chapter 18: Useless

  • Anti-Hero : What the HPSC thinks Bakugo could turn into, as a Villain and criminal deterrent.
  • Beleaguered Benefactor : The argument the President pulls in order to take over the Festival, as the institution is the major donor of the school and sponsor of the event.
  • Combat Parkour : Shown by both combatants during the semifinals. Mina takes a special consideration, as her training in break dancing gave her the agility to do many of the acrobatics.
  • Contrived Coincidence : Sure Recovery Girl, you don't have crutches; so now Izuku must help Hatsume walk. This is for the best, as this calms even further Hatsume.
  • Control Freak : The "Ma'am" President. Demanding things to go as she wishes, she is willying to go any lenght to have her way.
HPSC President:"...it’s time we take control back."
  • Cowardly Lion : Mina during the whole match. She is terrified, yet keeps going… Because she needs to. Bakugo HATES that…
  • Delayed Reaction : In the gratitude department, as Izuku can't help but thank Hatsume for her idea of the [78]. On her side, she recently took notice of Izuku's freckles, to his embarassment.
  • Fall Guy : Or fall guys. The expelled bullies from the Support Course (Aoi and his cronies) were contacted by Vlad King in order to sabotage Izuku's suit, as they were on the process of expulsion, they were the ideal scapegoats.
  • Heroic Resolve : With no mech suit, one could believe that Izuku would give up. [[Determinator Wrong]]! [[Spoiler: By chapter 19, it is shown that even after being on the receiving end of a brutal beatdown by Bakugo at the end of the festival, HE.KEEPS.GOING. Sadly, it ends tragically for the green boy.]]
  • I Control My Minions Through... : [[Fear]] and violence. Basically what Bakugo tries to do to Mina with his brutal display during the match, to cow her into being one more of his sycophantsTo no avail.
  • I Got You Covered : Used for support by Kirishima to a terrified Mina, previously her match.
  • Injured Self-Drag : Straight with Mina. Even as mangled by her fight with Bakugo, she keeps coming back to laugh into Bakugo's face.
  • Insufferable Genius : Extremely downplayed, as Aoi Ikki is lacking the genius part. Yet, he has the Ego, so as to shout against a teacher.
  • Klingon Promotion : A non-lethal example. Hiroko Kaneko from the HPSC forcefully relieved Midnight from the proctor position, as part of their move against UA.
  • Lovely Assistant : To some extend, Hatsume for the Midoriya's last match.
  • Please, I Will Do Anything! : Said word by word by Ikki, as UA was his dream school.
  • Pragmatic Villainy : Partially true for the HPSC as an institution, as they know that pulling Midoriya out will only bring dissent. Hence only to "proctor" the last match.
  • Punch a Wall : Or throw a faceplate, as Izuku did during his rant.
  • Spotting the Thread : Found out by the third excronie, Haruki Tanaka, as he finds suspicious that Vlad contacted them privately. His exfriends mock him for that, with no avail.
  • Suspiciously Clean Criminal Record : Essentially what Vlad King offers the trio in order to stay in the school. They just need to deal with a little work.
  • Third Party Stops Attack : Midnight, averting the [79] from previous matches as well as to avoid useless manslaughter from Bakugo.
  • Threw My Bike on the Roof : The sabotage of Izuku's suit by the soon-to-be-expelled duo of Aoi Ikki and his cronie, Ren Suzuki.
  • Won't Get Fooled Again : An introspective example. Tanaka most of his life followed Ikki without saying a thing. Now that they were about to sabotage Izuku's mech suit, he decides for once do right. And not be part of it.
Haruki Tanaka:"I have been towing the line for you for years now, because I had convinced myself that following you would take me far. But now, I know you’re just as blind as everyone else."
  • Wrench Whack : Seen in the arsenal of Izuku for the last match. [[Spoiler: Used to brutal efficiency against Bakugo in chapter 19.]]

Chapter 19:Deku

  • Abnormal Limb Rotation Range : Exploited by Izuku, in order to counter Bakugo's Attack, and for the consternation of the many viewers.
  • Big Dam Heros : Mixed with [80].Izuku had been brutally beaten down and televised, Bakugo proceeds to absolutely kill him… To be stopped by the teachers. Though, that doesn't undo the damage that he received.
  • Challenging the Bully : What most of the match was for Izuku. Between taunts, and feints, he manages to neutralize most of Bakugo's attacks. Giving him full stop.
  • Duet Bonding : A non-artistical example. Even though he's got little time to spare, Izuku asks Hatsume about how she did most of her gadgets, all while working on the last functioning mechanisms of his sabotaged project. [[Spoiler: It partially veer into [81] since Hatsume is impressed by the fact that Hisashi worked on Air Jet's equipment before dying.]]
  • Engineered Public Confession : Kan was played by Nedzu into a toned down instance.
  • Fake Arm Disarm : With wickedness against Izuku. During the match, Izuku is literally disarmed as Bakugo breaks his prosthesis.
  • Glass Cannon : Basically what Izuku shows Bakugo is, as he isn't used to being on the receiving end of a beat down.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol : Originally part of Hatsume's arsenal, but given to Izuku for his match as part of his [82].
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen : Bakugo crawling in front of Izuku.
Izuku:"I mean, look at yourself! You’re lying on the ground, impotent and aimless, unable to even really fight! And everyone is seeing this!”
  • I Know That You Know : Nedzu. While he has no proofs, he knows immediately that Kan is hiding something during chapter 19. [[Spoiler: Shown in full glory during chapter 23, as part of his exposition to Sekijiro Kan's past.]]
Nedzu:" Honestly, if I didn't know any better, I would say you are less shocked about Midoriya’s lack of armament, and more about Midoriya arriving at the field at all…but of course, I would have no proof to corroborate such claims…and even if I did…it wouldn’t be right of me to… misplace my trust in our staff…wouldn’t it, Kan?”
  • Internal Reformist : Referred by Nedzu and played to some extend with Sekijiro Kan, as the former knows that there are many agents of the HPSC inside UA, to consider insubordination. Not that it will stop him.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain : The HPSC. Midnight considers them just an agency. Nedzu knows better.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat : The HPSC. At the worst moment, as they WON'T stop the match for the safety of the other combatant.
  • Past Experience Nightmare : An awake example. Nemuri is disgusted with her as she froze from the shock, seeing how Bakugo brutalized the three girls he fought with; pleading with Nedzu to stop the fight.
  • Phyrric Victory : On both sides. True, Izuku lost the festival, but he had shown the world the horrible person Katsuki is. While Katsuki had shown the true psychopath he is deep down.
  • Power Nullifier : Sodium Hydroxide for Bakugo, as it neutralizes nitroglycerin.
  • Primal Fear : Being beaten down causes absolute terror to [[Hypocrite Bakugo]]. Specially if it is Izuku dishing it out. [[Spoiler: Sadly, this gives him a second wind to use his quirk.]]
  • Resistance as Planned : Inverted, as the HPSC didn't knew about UA's intention of taking back control. Still, counted and stopped.
  • The Power of Hate : One of the reasons why Midnight froze in horror… How malicious Bakugo was in every match, [[Sadist enjoying every instance of pain he provoked]] on the others.
  • The Reveal : For most of the viewers, Izuku showing his prothesis was a shocking one. Specially Bakugo… Izuku is unfazed, and punched with the very same arm Bakugo's dumbfounded face.
  • The Scape Goat : Izuku for Bakugo's aggresion.
Bakugo:"You just can’t stop getting in my way! Ruining my perfect backstory, just like you always do!”
  • The Worf Effect : After being covered with Lye, Bakugo is as harmless as an ugly kitten. Hence [83] from Izuku.
  • Title Drop : Nigh the end.
Izuku:"You can’t hurt me anymore, Bakugo! Not like you used to. I have a goal…something I need to prove…and I am not going to let you stop me now! Not anymore! I still have to show the world…that I am not done!"
  • Unfazed Everyman : Mentioned by Izuku towards the [84] of Bakugo. —>Izuku"You can’t surprise me anymore, Bakugo! You hear me?!”
  • Vandalism Backfire : For Kan personally, as he expected for Izuku to drop the match after the sabotage of his suit. He was wrong, to his horror.
  • We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties : How the Chapter abruptly ends. With the HPSC proctor shouting to cut the feed.
