  • January 2: Mr. Boseman introduces himself to Alex Winston as their new boss, who is filling in for Dave, the instructor who got drunk for days.   • January 6: The Miami Dolphins win the AFC Championship for the 1984-85 season. (Real Life) Ray Finkle is one of the players who earns an AFC Championship ring. (Ace Ventura)
  • January 20:
    • The San Francisco 49ers defeat the Miami Dolphins 38-16 in Super Bowl XIX. (Real Life)
    • [Alternate Universe] the San Francisco 49ers defeat the New York Jets 43-10 in Super Bowl XIX. (Sliders)
    • The Dolphins' loss is caused because placekicker Ray Finkle misses a 26-yard field goal to win the game due to Dan Marino not turning the football's laces out. Finkle becomes a scapegoat as a result, and the constant harassment makes him go crazy. (Ace Ventura)
  • February 1: Sam Beckett leaps into a television reporter named Dylan Powell in San Francisco. He is there to prevent a police psychic named Tamlyn Matsuda from becoming the seventh victim of the Chinatown Strangler. (Quantum Leap)
  • February 2: Complications arise when Tamlyn determines who Sam really is and the two fall for each other. (Quantum Leap)
  • February 14: Sam saves Tamlyn from the Strangler, fulfilling his mission, and the two part ways when Sam leaps. (Quantum Leap)

  • February 28: Birth of John Connor (Terminator)
  • February 29: Mongul sends "the Black Mercy," a lotus-eating alien, to Superman on his birthday, trapping Superman in a dream world in which Krypton never exploded and he has a family. Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman help set Superman free. (For the Man Who Has Everything)
  • Before March:
    • James Horton is reassigned. He stops being the Kurgan's Watcher moreHis new assignment is Blake Wellington. (Highlander: The Series, Watcher Chronicles CD-ROM)

  • March 29: Hiker Lois Einhorn is last seen at the entrance of the Tampa State Park before she disappears. The search for her body would be called off six days later. (Ace Ventura)

  • March-April: The Gathering occurs; the last Immortals face off seeking "the Prize". Connor MacLeod, one of the immortals, finds the time to romance forensic scientist Brenda Wyatt. (Highlander)
  • April 5: Ray Finkle sees an article about the search for missing hiker Lois Einhorn being called off. (Ace Ventura)
  • April 6: Ray Finkle escapes the mental institution he's been committed to. He assumes Lois Einhorn's identity and spends the next couple of years transitioning into a woman as part of an elaborate revenge plot against Dan Marino. (Ace Ventura)
  • April 9: A new resistance called Disrupt is taking place across the nation. If the Mr. Snugglehugs tape is playedIf the Mr. Snugglehugs tape is not played Patrick Bannon hosts the Sportsboard game that is being invaded by naked protestors; and Megan interviews Julia Salisbury and Peter Clement in an interview that is being beset by an Easter Tuesday thunderstorm, which has put Alex into a coma at the end of the broadcast (they eventually survive a day later).   • Before April 15: Ben Song leaps into Aleyda Ramirez, a public defender in Queens, New York. He's there to prevent an innocent teenager from going to jail for murder. (Quantum Leap (2022)Justification)
  • April 25: Sam Beckett leaps into the sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer in Manhattan. He is there to ensure that Annie Wilkins takes action against her former boss Jonathan who is sexually harassing and stalking her and that Doug Bridges and Debbie Schaefer get back together. While she is in the Waiting Room, Dr. Ruth gives Al Calavacci advice on his relationship with Tina. (Quantum Leap)
  • April 28: Humanity is wiped out in a nuclear war. ("There Will Come Soft Rains")
  • April: Johnny Truant is accepted to a boarding school. (House of Leaves)
  • Early May: Director of Whalestoe arranges for a meeting between Johnny and Pelafina Truant. (House of Leaves)
  • May 4: Sam Beckett leaps into an actor named Kyle Hart, who plays Dr. Craig Connor in the soap opera Moments to Live, in Los Angeles. Soon after his arrival, he is kidnapped by an obsessed fan, Norma Jean Pilcher, and her husband Hank. He is there to ensure that Kyle escapes from the Pilchers without getting shot. (Quantum Leap)
  • May 16: Oliver Queen is born. (Arrow)
  • May 21: Johnny and Pelafina Truant meet for the first time in seven years. (House of Leaves)
  • May:
    • Brett Waits and Bethany Sloane graduate college, marry, and try to have kids. (Dogma: A Screenplay)
    • Rick Derris, Roddy, Steve-Dave Pulasti, Walter Flanagan, and Shannon Hamilton graduate from North High School. (Mallrats, Clerks)
  • Summer:
    • Homer Simpson, Seymour Skinner, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon and Clancy Wiggum form a barbershop quartet and become a surprise hit with their song "Baby On Board". Wiggum is replaced by Barney Gumble before the group goes mainstream for being "too Village People", and they choose the name The Be Sharps. Over the course of "five and a half weeks", The Be Sharps perform at the Statue Of Liberty (with President Ronald Reagan in attendance), put out their second album, Bigger Than Jesus, and win a Grammy at the 29th Grammy Awards. However, cracks begin to form as the group starts to become burned out on performing and touring, which is only made worse when Barney Gumble wants to change direction to avant-garde music. The group decides to disband when Entertainment Weekly puts them on the "Not" list for their "Hot Or Not" feature, with the members returning to their former careers and lives.   • June 1: A party of adventurers from the World of Greyhawk travels to London, England, in search of the legendary Mace of St. Cuthbert — which is currently on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum. (Dungeons & Dragons module)
  • June 27: Disrupt are becoming increasingly popular, while Advance's popularity is waning. Jeremy and Megan interview world leaders that consist of Peter, Prime Minister Ivan Vodovich, and Prime Minister Bjerg, and ask them about Advance's declining popularity. However, Ivan makes remarks about sex jokes and Teeny Weenies, which gets these world leaders into a spat against each other. Later, rapper J-Zuss makes a performance of his own "The Villain Sucks" Rap against Advance and Peter Clement, only for Jeremy to have him arrested afterward before going into a tirade with Megan. For the third act, they make an interview with Geoff Algebra and the others on how they're making a modified play about modern life for Advance. However, not everyone seems to agree, as Jeremy is growing more and more concerned and troubled about Advance and their growing control over the nation. (Not for Broadcast — "Day 232: The Silence")
  • June:
    • Charles Danville is murdered in Philadelphia. (Cold Case)
    • Huey Lewis and the News performs their new song "The Power of Love", which they wrote for some new movie, at Uncle Charlie's in Corte Madera, California. Doc Brown shows up to see the performance; while he's distracted in the club, some clubgoers steal his DeLorean time machine and go for a joyride. ("The Power of Love" music videoJustification)
    • Ray Finkle rents a car from Avis. It's the last time his credit card is used. (Ace Ventura)
  • June 28-July 4: A secret Soviet experiment brings the Mind Flayer back to Hawkins, Indiana, where it seeks revenge on Eleven. The town's residents and animals are posessed and eventually absorbed/transformed into a horrific creature. This culminates in the Battle of Starcourt Mall, where Hopper disappears and Eleven loses her powers. (Stranger Things)
  • July 13: The Live Aid concerts occur in London and Philadelphia. (Real Life)
    • At the London side of the event, Queen performs what is considered their greatest live set. (Real Life, Bohemian Rhapsody)
    • After stepping into the quantum leap accelerator in 2022, Dr. Ben Song leaps into Nick Rounder, a getaway driver for some thieves. Ben is there to prevent a man named Ryan from dying in a jewelry heist later that evening. (Quantum Leap (2022))
  • July 24: Pelafina Truant becomes convinced that something has gone horribly wrong with Johnny, and the director of Whalestoe has been replaced by someone else. (House of Leaves)
  • July - August: Johnny Truant spends the summer working in a fish canning factory. (House of Leaves)
  • August 8: Ebenezer Wright has a heart attack. (St. Elsewhere)
  • August 23: Pelafina Truant sinks into paranoia. (House of Leaves)
  • August 30: A war is going on across the nation, blockades are set up, and a heatwave is getting almost everyone scorched, including Jeremy, who becomes increasingly agitated as he talks about various interviews from other people including Megan and Patrick Bannon; his own interview with three people with medical conditions; and sports involving Cute Kittens going underway. During the first act, he's growing more and more troubled about the heat and about Advance's tightening grip on the nation before thinking up a plan of his own.spoiler (Not for Broadcast — "Day 296: The Heatwave")
  • August:

    • Gary Wallace vomits in his sock drawer and blames it on the dog. (Weird Science)

  • September 5: Pelafina Truant has taken to plugging her ears with candle wax. Johnny Truant has his orientation day at boarding school. (House of Leaves)
  • September 6-13: Johnny Truant writes to Pelafina to tell her about his current situation. (House of Leaves)
  • September 8: Penny Robinson is born. (Lost in Space)

    • Pelafina Truant has an orderly smuggle out her latest letter, but the orderly shows it to the directory anyway. (House of Leaves)
    • A major earthquake strikes Mexico City, killing at least 5,000 people and destroying hundreds of buildings. (Real Life) Juanita Ocampo's house is among the many destroyed. Her mother sends her to Boston as an exchange student. (St. Elsewhere)
  • September 30: Pelafina Truant thinks receives a letter from Johnny and thinks she can escape Whalestoe. (House of Leaves)
  • September:
    • International tensions escalate into World War III. Housewife Penny, having recently found a mysterious necklace that allows her to freeze time to escape from her stressful family life, is left with the decision to either spend the rest of her life in a frozen, silent world, or face nuclear annihilation with the rest of humanity.     • Tonight, a Comedian died in New York City; Edward Blake, AKA "The Comedian", is murdered. (Watchmen)

  • October 25: Marty McFly is late for school after blowing out Doc Brown's giant amplifier. Later, he fails his school's Battle of the Bands, and is discouraged when Biff Tannen totals the family car. (Back to the Future)

  • Mike Nelson is visited by a robot from the future while working in a cheese factory, who advises him to pursue a musical career with his band Sex Factory rather than continue a path of temp jobs. Seconds later, a second robot from the future gets into an argument with the first and encourages Mike to keep being mediocre.   • Secret Service agent Richard Chance's partner Jimmy Hart dies couple days before his retirement. (To Live and Die in L.A.)
  • Street vigilante Casey Jones begin his activities, and encounters fellow crime fighter Raphael for the first time. A series of events involving the alien Utroms leads to the Ninja Turtles being hurled across the galaxy, encountering The Fugitoid and The Triceratons for the first time. Upon their return to Earth, the TCRI building is destroyed as the Utroms make their escape. Their creation, the mutant alligator Leatherhead, is accidentally left behind.   • Birth of Daisy to Will Navidson and Karen Green. (House of Leaves)
  • Becky Saunders persuades Carol Butcher to leave he abusive husband. Later that year, Becky marries Billy Butcher. (The Boys)

  • In France, Hellboy rescues a young woman from a cult, and then hunts down the demon that kidnapped her, Asmodeus. (Hellboy: The Bride of Hell)

  • Abigail Morgan leaves her immortal husband Henry, as she gets jitters about the fact that she's growing older and he's perpetually 35.More (Forever)
  • Debbie was gonna be an actress. She was gonna be a star. She was gonna shake her ass on the hood of Whitesnake's car. Also, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna (way before Nirvana), there was U2 and Blondie, and music still on MTV. ("1985")
  • New York is troubled by a new street gang led by the histrionic criminal Zed. The new graduates from Commandant Lassard's academy are sent to take the gang down. (Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment)
  • The Losers Club confront IT in the sewers underneath Derry. In the ensuing fight, Edward is killed but William manages to finally destroy the monstrous creature for good by tearing out it's heart. Simultaneously, the worst storm in Maine history tears through Derry, destroying most of the town. In the aftermath of IT's destruction, the Losers Club finds most of their memories of IT, Derry and each other begin to fade, as well as the physical records kept by Michael in his journal. (IT)
  • Earth is devastated by a nuclear war. The survivors and their descendants refer to it as the Total War. It takes 200 years for Earth to rebuild. (The Twilight Zone (1959))
  • A terrorist group called the November Squad is responsible for the destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge and a massacre at the United Nations Building in New York City. These attacks lead to the declaration of martial law in the United States. The 1988 presidential election is postponed indefinitely due to the recently introduced restrictions on mass public gatherings with the US government essentially being run by the directors of the CIA, FBI and NSA as a troika. As such, the United States is well on its way to becoming a fascist state. (Replay)
  • Captain Neal Patterson, Lt. Mike Cruze, Lt. Larry Turner and Professor Konrad are sent on a mission to repair a space station. However, the station is destroyed by a mysterious energy beam. Their ship is caught in this beam and crashlands on Venus. (Queen of Outer Space)
  • A trio of teenage superheroes, Hercules, Mercury and Astrea, begin their mission to protect Earth. (Space Sentinels)
  • Dr. Stephen Craig dies after getting into a car accident - caused by his using both cocaine and barbiturates - while driving himself and his heavily pregnant new wife Yvonne Galecki back to Ohio. The next day, Dr. Roxanne Turner is forced to deliver the baby by caesarean section while Yvonne is still comatose. The baby is a girl, who is later named Barbara. (St. Elsewhere)
  • A nuclear war breaks out between the United States and the Soviet Union. (The Twilight Zone (1985))
  • Charity Payne, a Puritan girl living in the colonial Massachusetts village of Annes Town in 1700, and Peter Wood, a teenage boy living in the Massachusetts town of Anniston in 1985, gain the ability to communicate with each other across time and see through each other's eyes after they both contract cholera.   • Harley Schwarzenegger Holmes is born. (Eerie, Indiana)
  • Rya'c is born on Chulak. (Stargate SG-1)
  • Kung Fury's police department is slaughtered by a time-traveling Adolf Hitler, prompting him to go back in time for revenge. (Kung Fury)
  • Heinrich Himmler, the second Führer of the Greater German Reich, dies and is succeeded by Kurt Haldweim. However, a popular conspiracy theory holds that Himmler actually died in 1983 and his death was kept secret for two years. (In the Presence of Mine Enemies)
  • The Sixth Doctor and Peri arrive on Earth to view the arrival of Halley's Comet, only to become involved in a plan by the Cybermen to use the comet to destroy Earth. (Doctor Who)
  • Pacific Tech students Chris Knight and Mitch Taylor work together to build a powerful laser, not knowing that their professor is using them to build a weapon for the CIA. (Real Genius)
  • Taro Ninten leaves home, hoping to find his parents. He meets Shunsuke Utsugi, who hires him as an assistant. (Famicom Detective Club)
  • Karen Kempster is born. (Jungle 2 Jungle)
  • Michiyo, the manager of Handmaid's Tea House Café, is gunned down by an assassin in the streets of Akihabara. (Akiba Maid War)
  • Pete has an argument with his wife over doughnut holes. As he was preoccupied by it, he handed over the bow and arrow to one of his Pinecone Troopers before he completed the safety demonstration. It resulted in his death as he was accidentally shot in the neck by one of his troopers. (Ghosts (US))
  • Divorcee Peggy Sue Bodell attends her 25-year high school reunion. She faints while receiving an award, and wakes up in 1960 as her younger self. (Peggy Sue Got Married)
  • Sylvie lures a group of hunters from the Time Variance Authority to a renaissance fair in Oshkosk, Wisconsin, killing most of them but kidnapping one. (Loki)
  • Birth of Becky to Ross and Bonnie MacIntyre. (Walkyverse)
