The Einherjar

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/einherjar_round_10.png

"One day... Our warriors will be renowned as... the Einherjar. The God-Killers!"
Brunhilde

Humanities' Champions and the peak of mankind, collectively known as the Einherjar. Thirteen individuals hailing from different points of time, and from all over the world. Selected by Brunhilde, eldest of the thirteen Valkyries, to participate in Ragnarok, a tournament to decide the fate of humanity. Each armed by the Divine Weapon that is the Volundr, the thirteen humans represents that of mankind's final struggles against the gods.
  • Adaptation Deviation: All of the Einherjar are based on real-life historical figures and characters from various myths and religions, but the manga tweaks a lot of their motives and backstories to fit in with the setting of them existing in the same world.
  • Age Lift: Several of the fighters were quite old when they died, but are returned to the age when they are at their physical peak in order to fight in Ragnarok. Inverted with Sasaki Kojiro, who is an old man despite dying relatively young because he continued getting stronger in the afterlife.
  • Anyone Can Die: Doesn't matter if they're sympathetic, noble, or unscrupulous as all bets are off in Ragnarok.
  • Dead to Begin With: All of them have long since passed into the afterlife.
  • Logical Weakness: Justified. With the exception of Adam and Qin Shi Huang, the only way that the human champions would stand a chance against their divine opponents is by wielding the Volunds, and if their divine weapons get destroyed during their respective matches, even if their divine opponents are near the brink of defeat at that point, then they're pretty much screwed.
  • Meaningful Name: In Norse mythology, the Einherjar are those who have died in battle and are brought to Valhalla by the valkyries. It also literally means "army of one" or "those who fight alone" in Old Norse.
  • Multinational Team: The 13 champions chosen to represent humanity are from all over the world. We have a Chinese (or possibly Mongolian) war general; the father of mankind and progenitor of all ethnicities; a Japanese swordsman who’s well known for being a loser; an Englishman who is considered the most infamous unidentified serial killer; Japan's most illustrious sumo wrestler; Japan’s most legendary folk hero; China's first emperor; a Japanese child prodigy that was a captain of a special police force of the late Tokugawa shogunate; a Greek warrior king of Sparta; a Serbian-American inventor/engineer who introduced 20th-Century to the world; a Frenchman famed for being a prophet and doctor; a Russian holy man; a Finnish soldier who is possibly the deadliest marksman; and the Buddha himself, an Indian hailing from ancient Nepal before ascending to godhood, later betraying the Gods for Humanity.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: In the main series, several of them are the underdogs going up against godly opponents and have to rely on their cunning wits and Volunds in order to win their battles. Back when they were alive, they were practically an invincible One-Man Army.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While the manga does shed a light on the origins and motives in each of the contestants' respective fights, their entire purpose in the storyline is to do the heavy lifting while Brunhilde's attempts to prevent the destruction of humanity through the tournament are the main focus.
  • Villain Killer: While their opponents are the gods themselves, each of the Einherjar were chosen because their talents and experiences made them the most likely to win. With some help from the Valkyries and by pushing themselves to their limits, several of them manage to score a win even in the face of the gods' power. So far, Sasaki Kojiro, Jack the Ripper, Buddha and Qin Shi Huang have emerged victorious, successfully killing their respective opponents.
  • Weak, but Skilled: All of the Einherjar as a whole is this compared to the Gods, and being skilled and crafty is a key compotent in winning any fight against a god. The ones who rely on strength such as Lü Bu and Adam are always defeated that barely, but those who mostly rely on wits and cunning like Jack the Ripper and Kojiro have a way higher chance of winning against one, even if their opponents are more physically capable than them.
  • World's Best Warrior / World's Strongest Man: Each of the Einherjar occupy one of these two areas in some way: for the former, it manifests in apex mastery of certain weapons or techniques, like Sasaki Kojiro with the blade or Qin Shi Huang with Chi You; for the latter, Lü Bu is outright stated to be unmatched under the heavens and Raiden has the strongest muscles of all mankind. Considering that the Gods ultimately edge over the Humans in outright strength, or at least have the durability to handle the strength of both the Einherjar and themselves, it makes sense that the Einherjar who rely on their skills rather than a competition of brute force seem to prevail more often.

The Flying General of the Three Kingdoms

"When I was a young boy, I saw lightning rip apart a giant tree right before my eyes. I felt no fear, instead what I thought was, "There must be someone amazing up there.""

The strongest warrior of the Three Kingdoms, as well as the strongest man of China. An innate warrior since a young age hopes to meet his equal in battle in the tournament, as in life he was unmatched due to his superhuman power. Among the Einherjar, he's the first one to fight in Ragnarok, going against Thor.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: In regards to the usual Chronic Backstabbing Disorder and jerkassery that was portrayed in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, this version of Lü Bu is only interested in becoming the strongest warrior and is only a quiet, if not gruff man.
  • Adaptational Badass: According to most adaptations, Lü Bu's final moments were spent pathetically begging for his life as he's about to be executed. In this setting, he willingly made his way to the chopping block and what people mistook for crying was him yawning out of boredom.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Nearly all depictions of him show that he often betrays whomever he's serving due to him not being satisfied with their conditions. Here, no such thing occurs for him as that was how he's been historically remembered In-Universe and is actually highly regarded by his men.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: Downplayed. This version of Lü Bu isn't ugly per se, but he is more wild-looking than his original depiction in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He was originally meant to look like his traditional counterpart, as shown in one of his initial designs, but the "barbarian" look that appears the manga was ultimately chosen for the final design.
  • Anti-Hero: While Lü Bu fights for the sake of humans, his behaviour is far from the traditional image of a hero. He sees no problem in massacring people in horrible ways, adores fighting strong enemies and even his reason to fight in Ragnarok is to find an opponent that can match his might, rather than to save mankind. As such, even if he's not as bad as Jack the Ripper (being more indifferent and only killing people in the battlefield rather than being actively malicious), he's not as benevolent as Adam or Kojiro. Furthermore, his spin-off shows that he doesn't have any qualms serving a brutal tyrant like Dong Zhuo if it means that he can fight strong opponents.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Downplayed when his legs were fractured after blocking Thor's Geirröd move. Played straight after charging against Thor's Combination Attack with his Sky Eater technique, with his left arm and the right leg broke off and his right arm nearly torn off (although Lü Bu removed it himself with his teeth).
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: His Volund is called, "Shield Breaker". True to its name, Lü Bu is able to pierce through any form of defense, such as Thor's Járngreipr (which is claimed to be capable of withstanding any attack).
  • Badass Adorable: As a child, he was small and had delicate features who would make many to find him cute, but that didn't stop him from killing every living organism who attempted to stand in his way, ranging from tiger-sized wolves to boars the size of a car.
  • Barbarian Longhair: He has wild hair that reaches his waist, to go along his skill as warrior and his Blood Knight personality.
  • Baritone of Strength: The anime gives him a fittingly deep and raspy voice that goes handy with his muscular physique and fierce aspect.
  • The Berserker: He's described to be the worst and most barbaric warrior by Brunhilde. As he loves rushing into battle recklessly as he is abnormally powerful and has never had the need to hold back as much.
  • Blood Knight: He loves fighting very much and even attempts suicide after he couldn't find a decent challenge. He is overly joyful once he fights Thor realizing that he is the greatest foe he had faced in his entire life.
  • Book Ends: He was inspired to become stronger to reach the heavens after witnessing an enormous tree being split by lightning in front of him as a child. In his final death, he charges forward and is killed by the God of Thunder.
  • Breakout Character: He gets his own spin-off manga, The Legend Of Lü Bu Fengxian.
  • Character Catchphrase: Whenever he finds an adversary that may end being a Worthy Opponent, he tends to utter: "You're pretty good!". More pronounced in his spin-off, as we obviously get to see him fight more.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Granted he was already freakishly strong and resilient as a mortal, but after 30+ years of constant battles and training, Lü Bu was able to split the sky in half and later challenges Thor in Ragnarok.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Dishes this out a lot in life, and it left him in a state of being unfulfilled.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: While Lü Bu did eventually lose to Thor due to his mortal limits, he still gave the God of Thunder quite a challenge in their fight as he not only injured him twice, but also survived against all three of his One-Hit Kill techniques.
  • Deader than Dead: As Brunhilde states, anyone who dies in Ragnarok will cease to exist, making Lü Bu's death by Thor's hammer this.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: After losing his Volund and his arms, Lü Bu gracefully accepts his defeat and makes one final blaze of glory towards his opponent rather than to live and surrender.
  • The Dreaded: His monstrous strength made anyone in China to know and fear his name. Soldiers are willing to charge into a behemoth like Hua Xiong even knowing they're gonna get a certain death, but upon Lu Bu's presence, no one except for a few skilled warriors attempt to defy the Flying General. It goes to a point where people were scared of him when he was a defenseless baby just by his aura alone
  • Driven to Suicide: In life he eventually decided to allow himself to be executed, as he's utterly bored due to having no more opponents to challenge him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As much of a battle-hungry maniac he may be, he has a code of honor in war and fulfills his promises. As such, after Sun Jian makes him cross the line he marked in the floor (since he promised anyone able to force him to retreat and cross the line would win the battle), he announces his enemy as the winner and leaves Hulao Pass instead of keeping the fight.
  • Glass Cannon: Despite his massive frame, he's ultimately this; he can only hurt and, most importantly, block Thor's attacks when using his Volund, and even then his body breaks under the strain of doing so. Once he loses his weapon, all it takes is one direct hit from Thor's hammer to mulch his face.
  • Graceful Loser: After the odds are fully against him, Lü Bu accepts his defeat and fearlessly charges forward towards Thor, who respectfully decapitates the Flying General with his hammer.
  • Grin of Audacity: Gives a lot these when he finally finds a challenge against Thor.
  • Hot-Blooded: Once he found a challenge against Thor, Lü Bu immediately gets fired up in their battle.
  • Heroic Build: He's fighting on the side of humanity, and possesses the build that goes with it.
  • Hunk: He is strongly built and ruggedly handsome.
  • Invincible Hero: In his own spin-off, Lü Bu is so grossly overpowered the best his adversaries can do is to temporarily stall him, and the only time someone actually defeated him, it was more due to Lü Bu himself admitting his defeat due a self-imposed condition he proposed before the start of the fight. No matter if you try to cut, club, kick, poison, punch or beat him to death, Lü Bu will always come out on top. It took an enemy of divine proportions to finally stop him in the main series, and even then, he gave one hell of a battle before perishing.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He was able to match Thor blow for blow until the god started to get serious.
  • Made of Iron: Due to his mortal body, it's downplayed. But not only was Lü Bu able to block against Thor's attacks without repercussion, but he also withstood the God of Thunder's Geirröd technique, which was capable of flattening Jörmungandr, with only his legs fractured. Hell, even when Thor combined his two techniques into one ultimate attack, Lü Bu only loses his arms when he retaliates with his Sky Eater attack.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Barely reacted when having his legs fractured, along with his arms and a right leg getting torn off as well.
  • Man Bites Man: With his arms busted and weapon gone, Lü Bu bares his teeth and charges at Thor for a desperate, one last attack.
  • Manly Facial Hair: Sports a wild goatee, fitting with his barbaric warrior image.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: He's notably ripped and was able to physically keep up with the God of Thunder.
  • Mythical Motifs: He's associated with eastern dragons, having tattooed one in his body and, in his spin-off manga, all the unfortunate enemies who try to fight against him see him (metaphorically) as one, emphasizing his might in the battlefield.
  • One-Man Army: True to the original historical depictions, Lu Bu is an absolute monster on the battlefield. It doesn't matter how many soldiers that were pitted against him, he would always defeat and kill them with ease.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He's always seen with a frown... until his fight against Thor.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: He was a general in life, and was capable of annihilating all who stood in his way.
  • Razor Wind: His Sky Eater attack involves swinging his polearm with all of his strength, which creates an extreme force that is enough to temporarily part the raining clouds.
  • Red Baron: "The Flying General of the Three Kingdoms".
  • Rugged Scar: Has one over his right eye.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Regardless of his legendary feats as a mortal, Lü Bu's loss marks the first sign of the lengths that mankind has to go through against the Gods.
  • Scary Teeth: He has very sharp teeth, who makes him even more imposing and feral. He had them since he was a child.
  • Signature Move: The Sky Eater. A technique he developed that splits the sky in half after years of training on a mountain by constantly swinging his Sky Piercer downwards while gripping the end with his palm.
  • Slasher Smile: Once he starts having fun in his battle against Thor, his usually serious face changes to a fierce grin to show that, for the first time in his life, he's actually enjoying a fight.
  • Stock Wushu Weapons: Uses the Ji (Chinese polearm) in life called the "Sky Piercer", and his Volund took the form of one in Ragnarok.
  • Strong and Skilled: He is not only extremely powerful and fights in an animalistic way of attacking but he is also an experienced warrior who has gained knowledge on how to use his weapon from mainly just learning by fighting and combining the two makes him a very formidable individual.
  • Super-Reflexes: He is capable of reacting fast enough to block and dodge all of Thor's attacks.
  • Super-Speed: He's called the Flying General for a reason. In life, his speed was so monstrous that he easily killed carnivores in one swipe and shish kabob the heads off of enemy soldiers in a blink of an eye. In Ragnarok, Lü Bu is able to keep up with Thor's godly speed, and manages to counter against all three of Thor's fastest and strongest techniques.
  • Super-Strength: He's strong enough to break the neck of a huge bear, split the sky in two after years of training, and can even take on Thor himself.
  • Super-Toughness: Enough to survive against all three of Thor's named techniques, two of which is stated to kill 66 Giants and the World Serpent with ease.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: He's the Dragon to Sun Jian's Tiger. He's characterized as one, has one tattooed on his body and his strength makes people compare his might to a dragon, though personality-wise, although he can be patient and calm like the Dragon, he's a battle-hungry warrior looking for a worthy enemy to fight, more similar to the Tiger.
  • Victory Is Boring: It's mentioned that most of his prior battles in the Three Kingdoms were Single Stroke Battles, leaving him unfulfilled in life. It's only while fighting Thor that he's able to indulge his thirst for battle.
  • Villain Protagonist: He's this for a period of time in his own spin-off. He serves the tyrant Dong Zhuo as one of his enforcers and kills a sizeable quantity of good men who tried to liberate China from the claws of the tyrant. This contrasts with Sun Jian, who fulfills the role of Hero Antagonist in the fight he and Lü Bu held.
  • Weapon Specialization: Just as in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his weapon of choice is the Ji (Chinese halberd), named Sky Piercer. He gravitates towards the Sky Piercer, as shown from the hill-sized stack of those halberds he used before his passing on Earth. He was unable to find one that could withstand his Signature Move without shattering, but at present, his Volund allows him to finally unleash his entire might against the Worthy Opponent he always wanted.
  • When He Smiles: Something that Chen Gong notices when Lu Bu finally found a challenge against Thor.
  • World's Strongest Man: Is seen like this in life, with Brunhilde describing him as "The Strongest Hero in the History of Mankind".
  • The Worf Effect: Despite being touted as mankind's strongest warrior and being able to put up a valiant fight in front of Thor unlike most examples, he still ends up being defeated and becomes the first causality of Ragnarok. This shows how dangerous the Gods are and that humans have no hope of outright winning them in a brute-force fight regardless of how strong they are.
  • Worthy Opponent: Quickly comes to consider Thor this as their fight progresses, claiming that the God of Thunder is "pretty good!". In life, he came to consider Sun Jian, Dong Zhuo, Red Hare, Cesc and Gryps worthy adversaries too, as, even though they still were beneath his league, they were the closest of beings able to make him get serious even if for only a few seconds.

Tropes that apply to Red Hare.

Red Hare

Lü Bu's signature horse. With a temper as fiery as the one of his master, he also possesses an unbreakable loyalty towards him.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The coloration of Red Hare differs between media. While Lu Bu's spin-off gives him a dark red color with a mane and eyes of intense red, the anime opts to give him brown fur with a black mane and dark red eyes.
  • A Boy and His X: Lü Bu and Red Hare are so closely intertwined that everyone just decides to count Red Hare as an extension of Lü Bu's body and let the horse support him after Lü Bu breaks his legs blocking Thor's attack.
  • Cool Horse: Although he rode many horses on his journey to become the strongest, Red Hare is the one who's mainly tied into his story.
  • Deader than Dead: He shares his late master's fate after dying against Thor's hammer in a futile attempt to avenge him.
  • Defiant to the End: Like Lü Bu, Red Hare and Lü Bu's army also die by Thor's hammer in a futile attempt to avenge him.
  • I Owe You My Life: The Lü Bu spin-off manga reveals that the reason why Red Hare is so loyal to the Flying General is cause he saved his life during their race against each other, where the arrogant son of a merchant had a group of people shooting arrows at his legs to immobilize and kill him in revenge for deforming his face of a kick. Lü Bu proceeds to kill the merchant's son of a single slap (making the other people flee in fear) and carries the wounded Red Hare to safety. From that moment, Red Hare recognized him as his rightful master and they became an inseparable duo.
  • Loophole Abuse: As Red Hare is so closely associated with him, his steed can assist him in combat without such aid breaking the rules.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Lü Bu, to the point that he is considered an extension of Lü Bu thanks their close bond. It's to the point that when he dies, instead of fleeing, Red Hare chooses to try and avenge him.

The Father of Humanity

"Hatred? Revenge? I don't need any of that. There is no "why". Does anyone need a reason to protect their own children?"

The first human to be created and the Father of Humanity. A powerful warrior with the ability to replicate any technique seen by his eyes. He fights to save mankind from destruction, as he desires nothing more than to protect his children from doom. Among the Einherjar, he's the second one to fight in Ragnarok, going against Zeus.
  • The Ace: Is this for the human fighters of Ragnarok. By virtue of being the first man, he is the human being closest to the Gods. Unlike the other Einherjar, he's able to fight toe-to-toe with the Gods without a Volund (as he killed the Serpent without any problem), can copy any technique he sees, and possesses inhuman strength, speed, and stamina, enough to bring the mightiest of all the gods, Zeus, down to the wire during their match. He also possesses an almost otherworldly natural beauty, being incredibly handsome and youthful, and having a muscular but toned body too.
  • Act of True Love: When the Gods condemned Eve for supposedly eating the forbidden fruit, Adam deliberately committed the same crime, sampling as many apples as he could carry. He chose to be with his wife over remaining in paradise.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In The Bible, Adam's physical appearance was never really described, with the earliest description that he looks "tawny", and tends to vary between different cultures. Here, he has the physical appearance of a caucasian male with blond hair and blue eyes.
  • Adaptational Badass: Probably the character hit with this the most. The original Adam was only special for being the first human being in existence and his long lifespan (a common thing in the Old Testament), otherwise being as strong as any normal man. Here, he's portrayed as a very effective brawler with an ocular ability that allows him to copy any technique he sees.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In this story, Adam deliberately allowed himself to be exiled from Heaven to be with Eve after she was framed by the Serpent for eating the forbidden fruit and doomed to be found guilty due to the trial being a Kangaroo Court that tends to favor the deity. In the Book of Genesis, Adam actually tries to shift the blame on his wife and justify himself when God confronts him for his disobedience.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: He fights completely barehanded using punches and kicks, not using any weapon at any point. After all, he predates the human invention of weapons. In fact, while performing the Volund ritual with Reginleif, she turns into a knuckle duster per his preferred fighting style.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: How his The Eyes of the Lord ability works, according to Brunhilde. After using it to copy an opponent's technique, Adam then polishes it in an instant to use it to its full potential against the original.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Adam is a loving father and a generally chill guy. Mess with those he treasures and he won't doubt to end your life.
  • Beyond the Impossible: He was able to keep spamming his punches against Adamas Zeus despite already dying in the middle of their battle of attrition.
  • Counter-Attack: Brunhilde describes him as the ultimate counter to the Gods, as The Eyes of the Lord gives him the ability to turn their strongest moves against them.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • By copying his attack with The Eyes of the Lord, Adam defeats the Serpent with one lunge at the start of his and Eve's exile from the Garden of Eden.
    • Subverted in his fight against Zeus. At first, the odds are stacked in Adam's favor as he effortlessly dodges Zeus's attacks, copies said attacks via The Eyes of the Lord, and wipes the floor with him. After delivering one hell of a Papa Wolf speech, the crowd cheers and his victory seems well assured. Zeus eventually turns the tables on Adam by entering his final form, forcing a battle of attrition, and prevailing.
  • Deader than Dead: Like Lü Bu, this is Adam's eventual fate after dying against Zeus in their battle.
  • Defiant to the End: Even though he goes blind and dies in the middle of his fistfight against Adamas Zeus, Adam continues on swinging until Zeus exhausts himself.
  • Determinator: Referred to by Brunhilde as the human with the strongest will, Adam continues to fight no matter the odds that have befallen him. Even after losing his ability to see in his exchange of fisticuffs with Adamas Zeus, he keeps swinging. In fact, according to Zeus he actually died halfway through their final confrontation, but his body continued fighting.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Rather than let Eve be punished for being falsely accused of taking an apple from the Tree of Knowledge, Adam decides he should get himself kicked out as well by deliberately munching on a basket of its apples and throwing them around haphazardly, right in front of the council of gods that were overseeing Eve's trial.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Twice he had done this in life and in Ragnarok. He killed the Serpent when the latter tried to kill him for foiling his plan, and he was able to harm Zeus without taking any hits himself until the end of their battle.
  • Died Standing Up: How he dies in his battle of attrition against Adamas Zeus.
  • Does Not Like Spam: He hates apples; since apples play into his original myth they're used to represent divinity, so Adam taking bites out of apples and spitting them out, declaring them to be sour is a pointed Take That! against the gods.
  • The Dreaded: He's this to nearly all of the Gods, with Ares, the Greek God of War himself claiming that even with 1000 years of training, he wouldn't stand a chance against Adam.
  • Eye Scream: Loses his eyesight when a speck of Zeus's blood splashes against his eye after his gift is being pushed to the brink in their exchange of punches.
  • Friend to All Living Things: He was this back when he was living in the Garden of Eden, where he and Eve were always surrounded by wild animals and even slept on them. This still remains when he leaves the Garden, as in his introduction in Ragnarok, lots of the animals from the Garden appear and gather next to him, showing that they still love him even after his exile.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Save for a single leaf that covers his privates he's completely naked.
  • Glass Cannon: Comparatively; during his battle with Zeus he knows that he probably won't be able to survive a solid hit from Zeus's incredible speed and strength. So Adam spends most of said battle pursuing an out-boxing strategy against the God Father of the Cosmos. Unfortunately, so does Zeus, and it turns out Zeus's stamina is just so slightly greater than Adam's.
  • Good Parents: While we pretty much know what will eventually happen to his sons, Adam was nonetheless a good father to them. Exaggerated when he's fighting for the survival of humanity in the tournament.
  • Happily Married: From what we see, he and Eve seem to genuinely be a loving couple and appear to mutually adore each other despite their relationship having been engineered by the gods, as Adam was willing to forgo his paradise to be with her on earth.
  • Heroic RRoD: The Eyes of the Lord allow Adam to copy any move and utilize its full effect. However, there is a threshold where the eyes will become strained if he's forced to replicate and defend against an immensely powerful move repeatedly, such as Zeus's True God's Right.
  • Hope Bringer: He's referred to as the Hope of Humanity. Even after dying in his battle against Zeus, Adam's near victory shows that humanity does have a chance to win the tournament.
  • Light Is Good: With a pale complexion, platinum blond hair, and eyes as blue as the sky, Adam is one of the most benevolent participants of the tournament, fighting for completely selfless reasons and displaying a pure love for all of his descendants, independently of their personality, gender, status or wealth.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Apart from having a great amount of strength, he is also surprisingly fast, keeping up with Zeus's incredibly fast movements and even surpassing him at some points.
  • Logical Weakness: While Adam can copy any divine technique and use it to the fullest extent, his weaker mortal body is unable to handle the strain of consecutive use, which Zeus takes advantage of near the end of their fight.
  • Loved by All: Being the progenitor to humanity, Adam is this to them regardless of race, gender, nationality, or creed. With the revelation that he fights simply because he wants to protect his "children", humans as a whole—regardless of statuses and alignments—just love him even more and all wish for his victory, and all of them mourn his death. Even the gods opposing him can't help but admire his strength and virtue.
  • Made of Iron: He's able to handle getting a punch in the face by Adamas Zeus, as Brunhilde describes a single punch is capable of an One-Hit Kill in this state.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: He's not as large nor is he bulky as Lü Bu, Thor, or even Zeus, but Adam's leaner frame doesn't stop him from performing the insanely fast and powerful divine techniques against Zeus.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: Even being smothered by Eve's massive bosom doesn't get much of a reaction from him.
  • Older Is Better: As the oldest human, Adam is also one of the strongest, able to injure gods without a volund by virtue of being the human being closest to them.
  • Older Than He Looks: Despite his youthful appearance, it's heavily implied that Adam is an adult male.
  • Only One Name: Justified. He's only called and known as Adam, which makes sense as his existence predates the concept of surnames.
  • Original Man: As the Father of Mankind, he's both the first human and man to be born. The method of his creation is, however, never stated, only that he was made in the image of the Gods.
  • Papa Wolf: Adam fights on humanity's behalf, not out of vengeance, but out of paternal, protective instinct towards his children (i.e., humanity as a whole). Even as he is getting pummelled, he thinks of his biological kids and saving any kid out in the world who's crying.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Adam is really, really short, and unlike his opponent Zeus, who dramatically grows and expands during their battle, he stays that way. He's even much shorter than his wife Eve. But he was the First Man, and the one human being who's a match for the gods by virtue of being the closest to them. He nearly beats Zeus in a pretty straight fight, and it's suggested he probably would have won if he'd been matched against any lesser god.
  • Power Copying: His gift, The Eyes of the Lord. Any attack that he sees, he can replicate with just as much speed and force behind as the one who delivered it. Against Zeus, this lets him both dodge and throw volleys of punches faster than a millionth of a second.
  • Power Fist: His Volund takes the form of a single knuckleduster. While simple, he makes good use of it.
  • Pretty Boy: Unlike the many depictions of Adam, this version looks like a ripped, teenage idol rather than an adult.
  • Race Lift: Played with. Adam is depicted as a blue-eyed blond with pale skin, similar to the artworks created in European Catholicism, unlike the more tawny color in the earliest description of him in Ancient Hebrew. However, as the Original Man, Adam's "race" is unimportant due to him being one of the progenitors of mankind.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Subverted. Pretty much everyone (including Brunhilde, the main character) believes that Adam is driven by hatred towards the gods due to his expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Adam later clarifies that this is not true.
Zeus: I can't feel the flames of hatred towards us gods within those two eyes of yours. So tell me. What's the real reason you're here to fight?
Adam: Haaah... you thought the same too, huh? They all say the same thing. "Hatred"? "Revenge"? I don't need any of that. There is no reason why. Is there any man that needs a reason to protect his own children?
  • Sacrificial Lion: Like Lü Bu, his defeat is to fully stress that even with the Volunds and a Story-Breaker Power on par with the gift to perfectly replicate the gods' divine might, mankind cannot match the gods for the long run and will need to fight more strategically if they hope to win the tournament.
  • Sistine Steal: The scene where he performs the Volund with Reginleif is an obvious reference to The Creation of Adam, one of Michelangelo Buonarroti's (who is also one of the spectators of the audience) Sistine Chapel pieces.
  • Smug Super: Despite being up against one of the mightiest gods, Adam has a thoroughly confident and even arrogant attitude in his fight against Zeus, and not without good reason thanks to his gift allowing him to match the god's immense speed and might.
  • The Stoic: Doesn't usually express himself outwardly, no matter how intense his emotions or how much pain and strain he's experiencing.
  • Super-Reflexes: Exaggerated. Adam can dodge Zeus's extremely fast punches which go off 0.01 seconds at first and go further from there. His reflexes are so incredible that he can even react to and dodge Zeus's The Fist that Surpassed Time, a punch thrown within a time frame of less than 1e-20 seconds.
  • Super-Speed: He's blazingly fast, being able to keep up with Zeus, who can even move beyond time itself.
  • Super-Strength: Being made into the likeness of the gods, Adam possesses godly strength which can stagger and harm the Godfather of the Cosmos himself without the use of a Volund.
  • Super-Toughness: Adam can withstand a volley of blows from Zeus (i.e., multiple True God's Right/Left techniques, where every single punch would be an unavoidable One-Hit Kill). His body isn't torn apart after getting hit by Divine Axe, which would normally sever an opponent's lower half.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Has this dynamic with Eve, surprisingly. It's not that Eve is very tall; however, he's just noticeably shorter than her.
  • Tranquil Fury: His demeanor when facing off with the Serpent, Eve's would-be rapist, before mankind's exile from the Garden of Eden. Let's face it, the piece of shit should have started running the second Adam said this:
"My little bird friends told me that you made Eve cry."
  • The Worf Effect: Just like Lü Bu, he's here to demonstrate the horrific power of the gods, showing that a mere man has no hopes of out-wrestling them. Despite being touted by Brunhilde as her trump card and the world's first man created in the image of God, he's outmatched by Zeus anyway despite being able to put up a valiant fight against him, becoming one of the first two causalities of the tournament.
  • World's Strongest Man: Justified, since he was created by the gods directly in their image.
  • You Are Number 6: Being the first human to ever exist, he's referred to as File No.00000000001.

History's Greatest Loser

"Men have dedicated their lives to wielding a piece of forged steel to its absolute potential. To all those swordsmen whose names are etched in the history of the blade... Thank you!"

A skilled swordsman from Japan, infamous for being the greatest loser of the human history, as he always conceded defeat to his opponents before the end of the battle (while also learning from them in the process). He wishes to win a battle for once in his life. Among the Einherjar, he's the third one to fight in Ragnarok, going against Poseidon.
  • Abled in the Adaptation: In the accounts of the historical figure, Kojiro was rumored to be fully or partially deaf in one ear. Compared to Musashi and Vagabond where he's portrayed as sociopathic or deaf-mute respectively; this version is mentally and physically ailment free.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Played With. This Kojiro's actual track record is abysmal, contrasting his historical self's success in sword fighting. At the same time, his ability to scan and observe his opponents meant that he would eventually surpass them long after his actual loss, including Musashi. He would also become the first victor for humanity.
  • Age Lift: Invoked. Though he dies fighting against Musashi when he was young, this Kojiro appears as an old man specifically because it is him in his hypothetical prime.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Kojiro manages to accumulate the experience of his fights while he was still living and hones them in the afterlife. As such, he's managed to incorporate all the techniques of the swordsmen he's faced into his own unique style.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: While Adam utilizes the "Eyes of The Lord" to analyze and copy a God's Techniques in one go, Kojiro predicts and analyzes every single thing his opponents does to formulate thousands and thousands of scenarios and takes the one where he's not instantly killed to retaliate.
  • Badass Normal: Unlike Lü Bu and Adam, Kojiro's abilities are completely derived from his lifetime of experience, training, and enlightenment, rather than natural talent or divine blessing.
  • BFS: Downplayed. His monohoshizao is longer and heavier than the average Japanese sword, but it has a realistic size and is wielded in two hands most of the time.
  • Blood Knight: During his fight with Musashi Miyamoto, who was a Worthy Opponent that made him want to actually test his skills for real.
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: In life, Kojiro never won a single battle and he was killed the only time he ever actually wanted to win. His losing streak finally ends when he defeats Poseidon, which also ends humanity's losing streak against the gods after Lü Bu and Adam were killed.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent from the fourth round due his injuries, he reappears during the fifth fight along with Okita and Isami Kondo to save Buddha from Loki and the Seven Lucky Gods.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: All his power and ability to predict as well as his superhuman swordsmanship and physical prowess stem not from his natural body but from years of training and constant defeat.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: Kojiro's "Thousand Image Defense," a skill he refined after losing every battle in all his life and into his afterlife.
  • Combat Pragmatist: What does Kojiro do after he managed to slice off Poseidon's arm? He continues the onslaught without giving his stronger opponent a mere second to recuperate himself.
  • Cool Old Guy: He was not one when he died, but his appearance in the tournament is the result of him showing up in his hypothetical prime. In his case, this is after a period of time in which he perfects the Tsubame Gaeshi and also obtains Hyper-Awareness.
  • David Versus Goliath: He’s the underdog in his fight against Poseidon. While the God of the Seas is a powerful enemy able to defeat powerful rivals with single attacks, Kojiro was a normal human who trained his entire life in order to become stronger and more skillful, suffering numerous defeats cause he wasn’t able to defeat strong opponents at first, only eventually (in his mind) after carefully analyzing them with his scanning abilities. For many, the result of the fight would be clear in favor of Poseidon, but against all odds, Kojiro is the one who ends victorious after developing his Niten Ganryu style and surpassing Poseidon’s with his improved superhuman scanner.
  • Determinator: The fact that he didn't give up after a lifetime of defeat cements him as this.
  • The Dreaded: Kojiro becomes this to some of the lesser gods after his victory in the third round, being the first human to actually kill a god in combat especially since Poseidon was also The Dreaded. When he makes his appearance during the confrontation with Buddha, some of the Seven Lucky Gods immediately become wary and on edge, referring to Kojiro as "the man who killed Poseidon".
  • Dual Wielding: Sasaki Kojiro's Nito-Ganryu style involves fighting with two blades at once, with the longer one in one hand and the shorter one in the other. It is the ultimate culmination of his Ganryu style of Swordsmanship combined with Miyamoto Musashi's Niten-Ichi-Ryu. This style is so effective that Kojiro leaves his opponent Poseidon covered in wounds, marking the first time where Poseidon, the god that has never known defeat, is dealt significant damage. And then Kojiro eventually wins...
  • Establishing Character Moment: Kojiro's first appearance practically sums up his character. He volunteers to go for his round instead of waiting for Brunhilde to choose him. His appearance is that of an elderly man, which seemingly contradicts the In-Universe rule where all human combatants take the form of their golden age (i.e., their youth). The next thing he does is to recover a falling milk jug and every single bit of milk in it with a swing of his sheathed sword. He then proceeds to enjoy a meal consisting of the milk he just recovered, plus the salmiak pies on the floor (which are said to taste awful), a peculiarity that none would expect from a Japanese old fella like him. Finally, he reveals he has been pursuing the way of the blade for 400 years since he ascended to the afterlife. All of the aforementioned moments during his first appearance cement him as a man of action, a man of initiative, a peculiar Cool Old Guy, and the Master Swordsman.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite taking his repeated losses in stride, it's revealed that he's secretly frustrated with experiencing nothing but loss when being overwhelmed by Poseidon's "40 Day Flood" technique.
  • Irony: He's known in human history as the greatest loser who never won a single match, but has brought humanity's first victory against the Gods by defeating Poseidon, whose own power is regarded as Zeus Enalios (literally meaning Zeus of the Ocean).
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: His main method of improving was by challenging swordmasters to duels, surrendering before they can deal the killing blow, and taking the time to learn from his failures.
  • Longhaired Pretty Boy: During his life, he possessed fine features and a long hair he kept in a ponytail.
  • Loser Archetype: The Loser. He's considered "Humanity's Greatest Loser" due to his most notable (and sole recorded) feat being losing to Miyamoto Musashi, as well as losing countless other battles before that. Ironically, he's the one that brings home Humanity's first win.
  • The Many Deaths of You: Not literally, but during the start of his battle with Poseidon, Kojiro, using his human scanner abilities, tries in his head different ways to get close to his opponent, only to end up killed (mentally) by the God of the Seas in many different and gruesome ways, such as being stabbed, butchered, cut in half or decapitated. After seeing himself dying 18 times, he decides to wait a bit until trying to fight Poseidon directly.
  • Master Swordsman: Through lifetimes of swordsmanship training, he accumulates the experience and techniques he encountered from pretty much every single Master Swordsman in his time, combining them all into the ultimate Dual Wielding style called the Nito-Ganryu. There is no doubt that he is the Master Swordsman.
  • Nice Guy: Kojiro is a laidback and carefree man that holds no grudges with others and respects the people that made him progress through his path of the sword. He's not even mad at Musashi Miyamoto for killing him, instead regretting the fact that he couldn't fight anymore, and holds a genuine friendship with him. And if his interactions with Hrist are any indication, he's quite the gentleman, referring to her as 'My lady' and apologizing that she has to go through all of his 'nonsense' I.E. killing Poseidon.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives Poseidon one such speech after he breaks his sword, pitying him for being an unfeeling, ungrateful Jerkass.
Kojiro: Hey, mighty God of the Seas... Do you mind... if I ask you something? Have you... Have you ever lost yourself and found yourself training until the sun rose? Have you ever cried tears of gratitude for those that made you stronger? Have you ever felt love towards your opponent in a fight to the death?
    *Beat*
Kojiro: Never mind. My bad. You've never felt any of that, huh?
    *Beat*
Kojiro: See, this guy here... the sword... is our history. The hearts of idiots from all across time. There's just no fucking way that I'm losing to a guy that's never even considered the hopes and dreams of others!
*Cue Heroic Second Wind as the broken halves of his sword is reformed into two blades*
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Has this dynamic with his rival Poseidon. Kojiro is the outgoing, cheerful, and friendly red, while Poseidon is the cold, serious and unfriendly blue. This is further reflected in their clothes. Kojiro possesses clothing with calid colors such as red and yellow, while Poseidon wears a blue battle armor.
  • Samurai Ponytail: He is a Japanese swordsman who sports a long ponytail. It was there when he was alive and it is still there even in the afterlife.
  • Scars Are Forever: He's got numerous ones lining his entire body.
  • Silver Fox: He's gotten wrinkly, but that doesn't mean he's bad looking at all. Since he's in his prime, he's reasonably muscular, and his pretty-boy looks as a youth faded into an acceptable rugged age look.
  • Spirited Competitor: Kojiro spent his life learning to use the sword, but until his final duel with Miyamoto Musashi, he never had any intention to use it; learning swordsmanship was an end of unto itself. He would routinely challenge any sword master he could find for the sole purpose of using conceptual training to defeat them in his mind, after which he would move on to find another swordsman to test himself against.
  • Symbolic Serene Submersion: There are a couple of moments that show Kojiro sinking into the depths of the ocean as a metaphor for him struggling against Poseidon's torrent of strikes. They serve to signify how a mere mortal like him couldn't fathom the true depths of the sea god's might, as well as the hopelessness of experiencing nothing but loss for his entire life. The second submersion scene eventually gets Played With as it is capped off with Kojiro's blade touching the bottom of the abyss, leading to a "Hell, Yes!" Moment where Kojiro manages to turn the tables against Poseidon.
  • Weak, but Skilled: In comparison to his opponent and the contenders before, he is this. He is neither the pinnacle of physical might like Lu Bu nor a divinely-empowered paragon like Adam; he is an elderly swordsman, past his prime despite declaring this "his golden age", but with a sword in his hand he is without peer thanks to mastery developed by years of defeats, and it is this utter pinnacle of skill that brings him his, and humanity's, first victory.
  • World's Best Warrior: When it comes to the sword, Kojiro was selected out of all other masters because he's the greatest swordsman around, plain and simple.
  • Worthy Opponent: Out of everyone that he fought, he respects Musashi Miyamoto the most as it's shown throughout his life he would challenge strong fighters, then give up when he knew he would lose and die. Musashi was the only opponent he wanted to fight to the bitter end because it was just too much fun which resulted in his death. Even his ultimate style is mainly based off of Musashi's Nito-Ichi-ryū.

Humanity's Most Infamous Serial Killer

"The colors of emotion that I see with this eye are a work of art that only I can create! And that art can make the lives of those living in darkness shine for a single moment. Isn't that wonderful? You wouldn't understand. Emotion steeped in one color... The color of fear... There's just no substitute for it!"

The most infamous serial killer known to mankind, born in London during the 19th century, notorious for not being caught in his whole streak of crimes. Cruel and wicked, his reason to participate in the tournament is that he wants to experience what it feels like to kill a God. Among the Einherjar, he's the fourth one to fight in Ragnarok, going against Heracles.

He is also the protagonist of the spinoff Record of Ragnarok: Jack the Ripper Case Files.

  • Allegorical Character: Jack the Ripper represents the malice of humanity, best illustrated by the titles given to him by the announcer Heimdall (e.g., "The Darkest of Evils", "Humanity's Greatest Evil", etc.). The premise of Round 4 has him going against Heracles, whom the narrative clearly associates with justice. Lastly, the main character Brunhilde, besides describing Jack as "the most despicable scum in human history", has something to say about this.
Brunhilde: Geir. What is the one thing that humanity excels above the gods in...? Do you know?
    *Beat*
Brunhilde: It is... malice. The personification of that endless abyss shall bore into the soul of the most righteous god...
  • Aura Vision: Through his right eye, Jack is able to see the "colors" of the individual's soul. It was this ability that has allowed him to evade being supposedly arrested in life. The real use of his eye is to Detect Evil to a degree. It is implied that he won't see any colors on innocent people, but the colors of guilty ones are clear as day to him.
  • Ax-Crazy: Jack may act like a gentleman but he's actually a homicidal murderer who wants to kill for fun. He can be open-minded and creative whenever he wants to kill someone by using everything available to him and understand how it works. His spinoff reveals that while he had still been an Ax-Crazy killer in life, he was more of a Professional Killer for the British Government who channels his impulses to people who are worse than him.
  • Badass Boast: He gives one to Heracles.
    "Tremble before me."
  • Badass Bookworm: He's an avid reader of William Shakespeare (although the Bard himself notes that Jack interprets his works in the most cynical way possible), and is able to hold his own against the stronger Heracles.
  • Badass Cape: Jack can use his cape to block the rebound of his own knives and slice apart a building thanks to his gloves turning it into a divine weapon.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: His main attire consists of a fancy gentleman suit. Though he is not as physically strong as his main opponent Heracles and the Gods and humans that fought before him, he manages to be badass by using his wits and developing tactics able to put his enemy into troubles.
  • Blasphemous Boast: He claims being born with Aura Vision is a gift from the Gods; understandably, this only pisses off the gods' side spectators even more.
  • Bloody Murder: The decisive technique that clinches his victory, Dear God, involves soaking his Volund gloves with the blood from his own injury, turning them into powerful weapons strong enough to pierce Heracles's chest with a single thrust of both hands.
  • Breakout Character: Like Lü Bu, Jack receives his own spin-off manga.
  • Brits Love Tea: Like every good Brit in fiction, Jack loves tea and is seen drinking it in his many appearances in the manga. He even goes to drink tea at the start of his fight (though that was a trick to make Heracles angry and lead him to a trap). As he tells Ebisu later, he seems to favor black tea.
  • The Bus Came Back: He reappears in Chapter 43 saving Göll from the Seven Lucky Gods after being absent for the entire 5th match.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Jack the Ripper is aware of his reputation as history's most infamous serial killer and flaunts it proudly. After Heracles correctly deduces his ability to see emotions with his eye, Jack shamelessly admits how evil permeates his soul, as well as how he finds the colour of fear displayed in his victims beautiful (hence his motive). The audiences of god and man alike find his little spiel nauseous, and he is proud of it.
  • Clock Punk: Coming from 19th century London, Jack's design has this motif with his pocket watch, hat, monocle, and the Big Ben tower, and the significant moments that accompany it.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Knowing that Heracles is too strong to face head-on, Jack instead uses the battlefield and mind games to pick off Herc slowly.
  • Colour-Coded Emotions: His right eye is able to perceive people in the color of their current emotional state.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: He wears a pair of black half-gloves throughout the fight, fitting for a serial killer. The gloves are his real Volund, making it so that anything he touches with them turns into a weapon capable of hurting deities.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Invokes this thanks to Brunhilde, taking full advantage of the Gods' wounded pride after Kojiro's victory by requesting the Valhalla Arena to be made into a recreation of 19th Century Britain as home-field advantage, being gifted with a giant scissor and a pair of bottomless pouches in addition to his Volund, and knowing that the next godly contestant would honorably accept this.
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit: His fall on the fence was a calculated move to get blood for his finishing move. He purposely fell into it calculating the point of the impact to avoid a fatal injury, then covered his Volund with the blood he needed, and hide the part of the fence that stabbed him to make Heracles believe that it was his trump card. His strategy ultimately works and gives him the victory.
  • Desperation Attack: After Heracles boosts his already enormous physical parameters with Cerberus, Jack loses his advantage in raw speed and mounts increasingly hasty tactics to defeat him. This culminates in "Dear God", a close-range piercing, dual knife-hand strike which would leave him completely open if it missed or failed to kill Heracles right away.
  • Devious Daggers: Jack the Ripper mainly uses throwing knives when fighting Heracles. During the fight, he flees, lies, lures, and improvises, a lot.
  • Dirty Coward. Subverted. His actions may look cowardly on the surface, but every single movement he makes is for pragmatic reasons since otherwise he wouldn't stand a chance against someone like Heracles. Also, his former job as a professional assassin means that he can't really take down strong people in a direct fight.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: His forced synchronization with his unwilling Volund pretty much spells out rape.
  • Enfant Terrible: He committed his first two murders (that were his parents, no less) at the young age of twelve. Everything went downhill from that point on.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Heracles' love for humanity includes even Jack himself to the point that in his final moments he embraces Jack in a hug. Even before that, the only other person who shows unconditional love for Jack was Anne.
  • Evil Brit: He looks and behaves like a typical English gentleman from the 19th century, to the point of almost looking like a twisted parody of one. He even has a predilection for tea like any proper British. The "evil" part gets dropped after his Character Development, but he nonetheless keeps his predilection for tea.
  • Expy: An unassuming person but is really a Serial Killer with uncontrollable murderous impulses but instead of harming innocent people, he channels his impulses unto people worse than him? He is basically Dexter.
  • Exact Words: Even though he's actually not the original "Jack the Ripper", he is still a "Prostitute Killer" by killing his own mother, who was a prostitute.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: When he was a child, he had an angelic face, but that didn't prevent him from committing his first two murders once he discovered how great seeing the color of fear in other people felt. That can be applied to his current self as well, as Jack, mustache aside, is quite baby-faced even in adulthood.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Under his polite facade, Jack is in truth a remorseless killer that enjoys bringing fear into his victims and seeing their expressions of terror as they die.
  • Feel No Pain: When his right shoulder was dislocated after crashing into a building from the force of Heracles' "First Labor-Nemean Lion" technique, Jack simply relocates it by slapping his arm back into place.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Although Hlökk isn't too thrilled about serving as his Volund before their match, she pushes him to go to the infirmary after it's over, and they're shown sharing cake and tea while watching Qin Shi Huang and Hades's match, suggesting that, like the other Valkyrie/Einherjar pairings, they've come to care for each other after the match.
  • Flechette Storm: Alluding to his stabbings, Jack makes frequent use of throwing knives in order to take Heracles down.
  • Foreshadowing: For a supposed messy sadistic Serial Killer who only targets helpless prostitutes, Jack is more skilled than what history implies. The Gaiden Manga reveals that "Jack" is not the Jack the Ripper but rather "Mr. Anonymous", a Professional Killer for the newly formed MI6.
  • Four Is Death: Appropriately, the representative for the humans in the fourth round of the tournament is a devious serial killer.
  • Freudian Excuse: He's the son of a prostitute who had to scrape through trash and was looked down upon by others for his poverty. His mother's love is pretty much his only source of happiness, and when she reveals that she doesn't actually love him, he succumbs to despair, and became a hedonistic Serial Killer to fill that void.
  • Friend to All Children: One of Jack's Pet the Dog moments is when he saved Goll from the Seven Lucky Gods. Even when he was alive, Jack had a soft spot for children, especially those who experience hardships in life as he saw them as Kindred Spirits. He even left a sizeable amount of money to a young girl who tried to enter prostitution to support her family and almost became a new victim of the original Jack the Ripper.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: He has the attire and mannerism, and is a very intelligent man.
  • Gratuitous English: Makes sense considering he's British himself, so he tends to add some English words in his phrases from time to time. Perhaps the most infamous is his performance of the old nursery rhyme "London Bridge is Falling Down".
  • The Greatest Story Never Told: "Jack the Ripper", or "Mr. Anonymous", is the one who stopped the murders of the original Jack the Ripper (a journalist named Luke Evans) and also dealt with various threats that plagued Great Britain as an unknown MI6 secret agent.
  • Hated by All: Jack is widely despised not only by the gods but by the humans as well, who are even wondering why they should cheer for him. By contrast, Heracles is beloved by both sides. The only humans who cheer for Jack are all shady and evil people like gangsters and prisoners. Him killing Heracles has all the gods throw rocks at him and even the humans are uncomfortable that he won.
  • Heel: He was specifically chosen to represent the depths of humanity's malice, and becomes hated by god and man alike for killing Heracles - notably, something he himself regrets doing. He pisses off the crowd with his dirty tricks and the outcome of the fight. The fact that he's not even the real Ripper lends even more credence to this trope being in play; he's literally playing the role.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: Aside from the fact that he has a Magic Eye that lets him see emotions, a flashback he has makes it clear that he killed many more people than the five prostitutes that everyone knows about, and he outright tortured some of his victims. Subverted, as he is not the original Jack the Ripper to begin with. He was a nameless Professional Killer who appropriated the name of the original Jack the Ripper, a journalist named Luke Evans.
  • Horrifying the Horror: The real Jack the Ripper became his target because he wanted to find a human absolutely full of malice and watch as they become helpless and terrified before their death.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: As revealed in his death-like state, he envisioned himself being loved by his birth parents and all of the people in London.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After Heracles gains the advantage in the battle with his 12th Labour, he manages to hit Jack and drop him to a fence, where he's pierced in the flank by it. Surprisingly, Jack manages to keep fighting despite that. This was also perfectly calculated by him (see Deliberate Injury Gambit for more information).
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Jack's skill with throwing knives might as well be superhuman, best shown when he is able to precisely throw countless knives that all hit and rebound off of razor-thin wires he had placed around the arena, with their paths all aimed directly at Heracles after rebounding.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: In life, he practically got away scot-free as a gruesome serial killer. In Ragnarok however, he ends up taking a monstrous beating at the hands of the heroic Heracles, and despite technically winning his one-to-one fight, Jack declares it as his loss instead.
  • Last Episode, New Character: For the anime, Jack makes a brief appearance at the end of Season One.
  • Lean and Mean: He is slender and seemingly less muscular in comparison to the previous contestants, and is a historical serial killer rather than a hero.
  • Luke, You Are My Father:
The Boy: It was written in the book you left behind... father.
Jack Smith: (Shocked) ...! YOU'RE- (The boy then slashed his throat open)
  • Made of Iron: Despite what his slender built suggests, Jack has shown numerous times to handle a degree of punishment in his fight against Heracles.
  • The Magic Touch: Eventually, his true Volund are revealed to be his gloves, which have the power to turn anything they touch into holy weapons able to wounds Gods without problems. The extent of what they can turn into weapons ranges from knives to the Big Ben building, to blood.
  • Necessarily Evil: Is regarded as this by Brunhilde, seeing Jack's abilities to be necessary for Ragnarök despite the latter's reputation of being the worst scum in human history.
  • Nominal Hero: He's on the side of humanity, but is anything but a heroic one.
  • No Name Given: Jack isn’t his real name. In fact, he isn’t even Jack the Ripper and was actually called Mr. Anonymous by Brunhilde before he took the Jack the Ripper name for himself.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Pulls this off twice, first claiming his Volund is a giant pair of scissors, then revealing it's actually the pouches on his hip that can produce any weapon, then revealing that his true Volund is the gloves he wears which turn anything he touches into a divine weapon.
  • No Name Given: Like the urban myth, his real name was never revealed (assuming that he even got one).
  • Only Known By His Nickname: Again, he's only known by his alias.
  • Porn Stache: Sports a spiffy one, that enhances his appearance of a gentleman.
  • Practically Joker: A wicked, grinning trickster with a taste for artistically horrific murder. He also displays a trait not usually possessed by Joker clones: a surprising emotional attachment to his enemy, even mourning his death as much as the battle's audience did.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: Jack the Ripper is a Serial Killer who uses a nigh limitless number of knives in his fight against Heracles. Even his Start of Darkness involved murdering his parents with a knife.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He shows childish delight in murdering people, tends to sing creepy nursery rhymes for himself for no apparent reason and is still obsessed with his mother in adulthood. Furthermore, he stills longs for his past dream where he and everyone around him are happy and well, showing he hasn't moved on from his childhood.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Manages to win his battle at the end, but with that he loses the only person who truly loved and understood him in his whole life.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The right eye that allows him to see the colors of the soul has a red-colored iris, and he's an infamous British serial killer during the late 19th century. They contrast with the blue eyes of his opponent, Heracles.
  • Revision: The Gaiden Record of Ragnarok: Jack the Ripper Case Files reveals that "Jack the Ripper" is not Jack the Ripper but actually "Mr. Anonymous", a Professional Killer who had taken down the actual Ripper during his life and appropriated his identity for his own fight against Heracles. He was one of the first secret agents for the newly formed British Intelligence Secret Service or the "MI6" who deals with anyone or anything that could threaten Great Britain. It's implied that one of Brunhilde's reasons for choosing him to fight as the Representative of Mankind is his impressive track record of assassinating high-profile targets without ever being discovered and dealing with people much stronger than him.
  • Self-Made Orphan: His first kill ends up being his mother, with the very next one being his father for what his neglect brought his mother to do.
  • Serial Killer: Perhaps the most infamous one in the history of mankind, not being caught during the period of time where he committed his crimes and killing at least 5 prostitutes (with much more unaccounted for as a brief flashback shows). This black legend surrounding him is the reason why Brunhilde chooses him as the rival of Heracles, like the one representing the unlimited potential of humans to commit evil. His spinoff manga reveals that they only used the reputation of "Jack the Ripper" to raise the notoriety of Mr. Anonymous, as he himself was a nameless Professional Killer who faded from history.
  • Shout-Out: The mask he wears during his introduction is one to V for Vendetta.
  • Slasher Smile: Gives a very disturbing one when claiming he wants to dye Heracles' pure soul.
  • The So-Called Coward: Gets this a lot for his pragmatism against Heracles in their one-to-one fight, but it's the only way for him to have a chance of winning the match.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Jeff Leach has a more syrupy and gentle delivery than Sugita's, dripping with sarcasm.
  • Son of a Whore: For this version of him, he was born of an affair between a rich man and a prostitute.
  • Staring Down Cthulhu: Frequently does this to Heracles, and is able to force a Volund synchronization with an unwilling Hlökk through this method as well.
  • Stronger Than They Look: While certainly outmatched by Heracles in terms of strength, Jack, as a child, easily strangled his own mother with his bare hands and made a line of cracks in a brick wall by dragging a knife against it.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Of the Human fighters. As Herc represents everything ideal about a god, Jack represents humanity's capacity for evil.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Upon his reappearance in chapter 43, he saves Göll from the Seven Lucky Gods and offers her some tea without any malicious intention, showing he became a new man after his encounter with Heracles.
  • Tragic Dream: On the boundary line of death, he hallucinates an achingly beautiful vision of an idealized London where his parents, his victims, and even those who treated him unkindly are all smiling, well-fed, comfortable, and happy.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Other than tea, one of his favorite foods is apple pie. In his spinoff, he is shown always ordering or eating it before accepting a mission from his MI6 handler.
  • Tricked-Out Gloves: His true Volund are the gloves he was wearing since the beginning of the battle, that can turn anything they touch into deadly weapons. It also makes sense since in his former time in the living, Jack uses anything in his hands to perform his assassinations to his intended targets.
  • The Trickster: He fools Heracles numerous times in their one-to-one fight, to the point where the God of Mischief himself becomes impressed.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Even before the revelation of his mother's true colors, there were hints of his growing misanthropy where he had to learn to act in certain mannerisms from the constant exposure of interacting with very unsavory and apathetic citizens and the fact that he was prideful of his mother loving him, by giving birth to him only, while callously disregarding the abortion of his five older unborn siblings.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: In his youth, he was a baby-faced and friendly kid until the incident with his mother made him realize the beauty of a body dyed in the color of fear.
  • Vague Age: His silvery hair makes him look rather elderly but it's later revealed he always had it, even as a young child. As such, it's hard to tell just what age he's meant to look, although the lack of wrinkles implies he's simply middle-aged.
  • Villainous Underdog: Heracles outclasses him in almost every respect and the entire audience despises him.
  • Weak, but Skilled: More so than the previous contestants, as Jack takes full advantage of the terrain, wits, and trickery in his fight against Heracles.
  • What Is This Feeling?: After winning he finds himself stricken with an unfamiliar emotion, which turns out to be sadness for killing the only person who truly loved him.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has silver-colored hair and is a brutal serial killer.

The Peerless Rikishi

"At last... At long last... I can go at this "sumo" that's let me down for so long.... With all I've got... I wanna risk my body, no, my whole life on this... 'Cos after all... I'm a rikishi."

The most illustrious sumo wrestler in the history of Japan, legendary for his massive size and incredible strength. Born Tarokichi Seki, he was both gifted and cursed with inhumanly powerful muscles since childhood, giving him monstrous strength comparable to the gods themselves. He fights for the sake of humanity's weak who cannot fight for themselves, but also wishes to find an opponent who he can finally unleash his full power against. Among the Einherjar, he's the fifth one to fight in Ragnarok, going against Shiva.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Traditional depictions of Raiden Tameemon portray him as what you can expect from a sumo wrestler, being bulky yet muscular and middle-aged. This portrayal of his not only trades the usual bulkiness of a sumo wrestler for one hell of a Heroic Build, but he looks in his 20s and has a handsome face too.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: After accidentally hurting another boy when he was just 5 and causing the village children to fear him as a monster, Raiden developed a severe aversion towards using his inhuman strength against other people. He carried this complex his entire life, only competing in sumo because it was against other skilled opponents, but forfeiting against anyone who openly feared his monstrous strength. It's implied this is the reason that Raiden was never promoted to the rank of Yokozuna in his lifetime despite his clear mastery of sumo. note
  • Amazon Chaser: Says he's partial to big girls and means it. He's overjoyed when he meets the Amazonian Beauty Þrúðr, and while he doesn't sleep with her as he planned, he easily accepts her becoming his Volund.
  • An Arm and a Leg: After managing to take out three of the four arms of Shiva, the latter returns the favor by bisecting his right arm with a kick from his Deva Loka attack. As a result of the flames coming from Shiva's body, the upper section of his arm falls to the ground and burns away.
  • Barbarian Hero: His libido and lack of clothes fall into the standard archetype, but he lacks the bloodlust and mindless combative style commonly associated with the trope. In contrast to Shiva, Raiden isn't thrilled about having to kill or about the high stakes involved in the contest at the start of their match and just wants to end the fight as soon as possible.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Being a sumo wrestler, he doesn't use any weapon at all and fights barehanded. In addition to traditional sumo techniques, he's also shown to employ some forbidden techniques consisting of punches, kicks, and sneak attacks, all performed with his body.
  • Beyond the Impossible: His muscles without his seals are so strong that even when using a Volund with the Valkyrain embodiment of strength herself, Þrúðr, who in Norse myth was on par with Thor himself, he's only able to control the strength of his muscles for mere minutes before his body starts tearing itself apart from the backlash. You know its this trope when even a living embodiment of strength herself can barely keep his own muscles from killing him!
  • Big Eater: Implied. Just before Brunhilde and Göll enter his bedroom, there were stacks of plates and sake littered everywhere.
  • The Big Guy: He's pretty much this to the rest of the Einherjar, dwarfing characters like Lu Bu and even his opponent Shiva.
  • Body Horror: Raiden's muscles are so powerful that they begin tearing his body apart if he tries undoing his personal seals, and can only do so in Ragnarök thanks to his Volund. His Volund also allows him to freely manipulate his musculature to shift into different parts of his body, such as grotesquely bloating up his forearms to block attacks with a shield of flesh and muscle.
  • The Casanova: Implied. We first meet him piled up with nude girls of all species, apparently having had his way with all of them. He also attempts to hit on Brunhilde under the impression that his "becoming one" with a Valkyrie was in the sexual sense.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Once his one-to-one fight against Shiva begins, Raiden pulls no punches and immediately goes onto the offense to defeat and kill his opponent as quickly as possible. Furthermore, he also has no problems with using his limbs to either punch or kick and even utilized sneak attacks despite those moves being forbidden in actual sumo wrestling. Justified as his opponent is a god, meaning that he'll have to resort to anything in order to win.
  • Cursed with Awesome: It turns out that when he was born, he had a bizarre condition where his muscles would produce endlessly, destroying his bones. To that end, he eventually created a technique to seal his muscles at the price of holding back. Thanks to Þrúðr, he destroys his seal and goes all out.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: In life, Raiden was forbidden from using four techniques in competitive sumo due to the damage they can do, referred to as kinjite. His backstory reveals that Raiden and his coach Tanikaze were the ones that had decided to ban the techniques, as a compromise to work around Raiden's complex about harming others, not a deliberate handicap like history suggests. Using just one of them with his full power is enough to blow two of Shiva's arms clean off.
  • Deader than Dead: His fate after being defeated and killed by Shiva.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Raiden came to be Tanikaze's student after their first training session turned into a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, with Tanikaze's superior skill and experience brutally beating down Raiden despite his inhuman strength. This moment was a very happy one for Raiden, as it helped him realize that there were skilled and powerful opponents out there in the world of sumo that could handle his strength, allowing him to pursue his dream without guilt.
  • Determinator:
    • As a child, Raiden's unnatural muscle growth caused him excruciating pain as he learned to walk, his muscles crushing his bones with each contraction. He never gave up despite all the pain, and eventually developed new muscles within his own body out of sheer willpower, called the 100 Gates, that acted as physical limiters to prevent his growing muscles from crushing him.
    • Upon arriving in Edo to begin his sumo career, Raiden unintentionally offended the Fourth Yokozuna Tanikaze, who then attempted to break Raiden's spirit in their first training session. He beat the hell out of Raiden with the intention of sending him back home, but he kept getting back up and never quit, eventually earning Tanikaze's respect and becoming his student.
  • Died Standing Up: Raiden is killed standing on his feet and his body stays upright even as it disappears. In fact, Raiden never once falls or hits the ground during the entire fight, always being able to catch himself or maintain his balance.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength:
    • When he first tried sumo as a 5-year-old, Raiden accidentally hurt another boy with his great strength, creating a complex about hurting those weaker than him that he would carry his entire life.
    • After the first time using his Volund to undo his personal seals and unleash his muscles, even Raiden himself does not know what he is now capable of, having never once gotten to use his maximum strength before. He is just as surprised as everyone else when he uses his Volund's muscle control to crush Shiva's arm with his grip strength.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first scene quickly establishes him as a confident warrior who greatly enjoys the earthly desires, such as eating, sleeping, or having sex.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: The list of girls he slept with during his first scene range from females with the appearance of normal human women, to girls with animal parts, to an anthropomorphic dog woman.
  • Farm Boy: Raiden came from a simple farming family and was content to live a modest life using his strength to aid those around his village, until the eruption of Mt. Asama in 1783 led to the Great Tenmei famine overtaking his village. He decided to travel to Edo and become a sumo wrestler, using his strength to earn money for his village so they would no longer starve.
  • Gentle Giant: Early on in the fight, Raiden asks Shiva why everyone loves watching such a brutal spectacle, implying that he doesn't like violence despite his career in a combat sport. His full backstory reveals that he is a truly good-hearted individual beneath all his vices, never wanting to harm those weaker than him and desiring nothing more than using his strength to help others. The very idea of using his strength to hurt the weak is enough to move him to tears.
  • Graceful Loser: After sustaining a critical injury and losing use of his muscles, Raiden concedes defeat to Shiva while thanking him for finally giving him the chance to fight with his full strength.
  • Growing Muscles Sequence: After the opening exchanges of the fight, Raiden uses his Volund to unleash his full muscle mass, growing into a massive size from the overflowing muscles before regaining control and compressing his strength. His Volund also allows him to bloat up muscles in certain areas of his body, such as in his forearms to create a shield of flesh for blocking attacks.
  • The Hedonist: Being known as the embodiment of sloth, he eats and drinks in large quantities, naps all day, and would have sexual intercourse with any humanoid female.
  • Heroic Build: Oh, yes. In terms of muscular mass, he gives the likes of Lü Bu and Heracles a run for their money, and he's a heroic character fighting to avoid the extinction of humankind. Raiden's abdominal muscles in particular are a fourteen-pack.
  • Hunk: He's tall, very handsome, and has muscles for days.
  • Manly Tears: Raiden was only able to compete in sumo while being true to his morals because it was against other skilled and fearless opponents, but upon realizing that one man was truly terrified to face him, Raiden immediately forfeited the match. He later tearfully confides in his coach Tanikaze that he feels like he has begun abusing his great strength to harm those weaker than him, but is trapped in his situation because he has no other option to feed his family and village.
  • Lady Killer In Love: His debut appearance, in which he is laying down naked with a bunch of women, heavily implies that he Really Gets Around and that Thrud is the first woman he has ever genuinely fell in mutual love with.
  • Meaningful Rename: His birth name was Tarokichi Seki, before being renamed Raiden Tameemon upon becoming a sumo wrestler.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Raiden is a very well-built man, and a lot of emphasis is put on his herculean physique, to the point two of his supporters in the audience (Genpaku Sugita and Hokusai Katsushika) show great interest in his fit body (one to dissect it and the other to paint it).
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Seconds after his fight with Shiva starts, he wastes no time in attacking his enemy as soon as he can, using brutal techniques not allowed in sumo to overwhelm and kill him. Unfortunately, the Hindu deity is a lot tougher than Raiden thought and manages to survive or block every one of his attacks.
  • Off with His Head!: How Shiva kills him, severing his head with a flaming kick that instantly cauterizes the wound and prevents any blood from pouring.
  • Power Incontinence: Raiden's powerful muscles begin destroying his body after he undoes his seals, and only his Volund allows him get his muscles under control. As the battle goes on and Raiden continues to use his muscles at their maximum strength, his mortal body can no longer handle the strain and begins tearing apart. Þrúðr has to give her full strength throughout his entire body in order for him to continue fighting.
  • Power Limiter: As a child, Raiden was forced to develop new muscles that acted as physical seals within his body to keep his unnatural muscle growth from crushing his own body, calling them the 100 Gates. These seals are what become his Volund, allowing him to finally unleash his full potential without killing himself.
  • Power Tattoo: His Volund visually manifests as the red, tattoo-like markings that cover his body, which mark where the seals within his body are located. The tattoos are seen growing to contain his overflowing muscles when he first uses his Volund to unleash his full strength.
  • Really Gets Around: In his introductory scene, he's seen sleeping with lots of humanoid divine females after just having sex with them. Considering his comments about it, it may be a common occurrence for Raiden.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Sadly averted. He was born with insane strength, but not bones that could handle that strength.
  • Sacrificial Lion: After the victories of Kojiro and Jack, Raiden's loss serves as a reminder that the Einherjar can, and will, still lose at times.
  • Stripperific: The man knows absolutely nothing about modesty, wearing nothing but a fundoshi, knee pads, and an open robe.
  • Strong and Skilled: When Raiden first started his sumo career, he relied only on his brute strength and got handled by the superior technique of his coach Tanikaze. Under his training, Raiden developed into a true monster in the ring that combined insane power with impeccable skill. Raiden eventually forbade himself from using certain basic sumo techniques out of the sheer damage they can do thanks to his strength and mastery of the art. The most basic of all techniques, teppo (an open palm strike), when combined with the muscle manipulation of his Volund, is strong enough to tear two of Shiva's arms clean off in an attempt to block.
  • Super-Strength: Thanks to his bizarre muscle growth, he can easily trade blows with Shiva and nearly twist one of the god's hands off.
  • Super-Toughness: He can tank blows from the godly strength of Shiva with little discomfort thanks to his thick muscles.
  • Use Your Head: Raiden's Jizo's Embrace is one of these and was intended to finish Shiva within the first minute of their battle. Unfortunately, Shiva is an even bigger Hard Head than Raiden and just meets the attack head-on.
  • Willfully Weak: Raiden lived his entire life deliberately limiting his strength one way or another, be it his muscle seals preventing him from ever using his true strength, or forbidding himself from using certain techniques in sumo to not harm opponents. Ragnarök is his first chance to go all out, getting to finally use his maximum strength against an enemy that he can't afford to go easy on.
  • What Have I Become?: Raiden suffered from this after he realized that his opponents had become terrified of him, believing that he had become a monster that abused his strength to take advantage of those weaker than him. This is a complex he's had since childhood after he accidentally hurt another boy and caused the village children to fear him as an inhuman beast. The manga implies that all of Raiden's losses in life were due to him forfeiting against any opponents who were deathly afraid of him.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: In addition to his traditional sumo techniques, Raiden also utilizes moves associated with professional wrestling such as dropkicks, clotheslines and Russian hooks.

The Sixth Representative of Humanity (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Gautama Siddharta / Buddha

Origin: India

Pantheon: Buddhism

Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura (Japanese), Maaz Ali (English)

The Honored One

"The only one who can push me around in all heaven and earth... is me."

The Buddhist God of Enlightenment, as well as the founder of Buddhism. He's the participant of the sixth round of Ragnarok, going against the Seven Lucky Gods/Zerofuku. In a wild turn of events, Buddha promptly sided for humanity despite the fact that he was already chosen to fight for the heavens.
  • Actor Allusion: Yuichi Nakamura, Buddha's VA, also voiced Gojo Satoru from the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise. Both Buddha and Gojo are immensely powerful beings with absolutely no regard for authority and violently oppose the established order when it infringes on their interests. Gojo even uses a quote attributed to Buddhism when he masters the Reverse-Curse Technique and becomes virtually invulnerable; "Throughout Heaven and Earth, I alone am the honored one."
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: In sharp contrast to his well-known Big Fun portrayal, Buddha here looks more like an eccentric hipster with a muscular physique.
  • Agony of the Feet: His right foot is badly injured after Hajun stabs through it with his spiked weapon.
  • Always Someone Better: Is this to Zerofuku in what regards to bring people happiness. Zerofuku's method of absorbing the misfortune of people into himself works at short term, but eventually the humans whose misfortune he absorbed became more depraved and lost sight of what true happiness is. Buddha in turn, taught people that the only ones who can give happiness to them are none other than themselves, and his followers, though raggedy and in poor conditions, managed to be truly happy thanks to his teachings, and he even made the people who became depraved due Zerofuku's actions to look at themselves in shame. This was so much for Zerofuku that prompted his descent into darkness.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Initially shown as one of the champions on the side of the gods fighting against humanity, is implied in his first appearance that he taught the valkyries how to perform the Volund ritual, the thing that ended up costing the lifes of two gods, leaving ambiguous if he's loyal to the gods, wants to secretly save humans, or if he did that just because he could. Eventually, he fully reveals himself as a traitor to the Gods, striding out in the sixth round and announcing himself as humanity's representative.
  • Battle Aura: Once he unleashes Salakayas, a huge, intimidating aura resembling a demonic version of himself appears before Hajun, displaying the hatred towards the demon that made Buddha unlock the realm.
  • Berserk Button: He despises those who impose their will on him and attempt to prevent him from pursuing happiness.
  • Big Eater: Buddha has a fondness for sweets and junk food, and is constantly seen munching on something. Sharing his food is a sign of respect, as shown when he comically denies Zeus' attempts to take some of his chocolates, but later openly shares popcorn with Brunhilde. Though how much he truly respected her at first is ambiguous, if his What the Hell, Hero? moment with her is anything to go by.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: After becoming intertwined with the spirit of Zerofuku and gaining a new divine weapon empowered by the Seven Lucky Gods, Buddha uses Zero and the Lucky Gods' catchphrase of "Divine Punishment" to taunt Hajun with an Ironic Echo of the demon's use of the phrase.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: On one of his walks, he discovers Zerofuku, corrupted and crying because he could never figure out why his wealthy subjects weren't happy when they were cured of their misfortune while Buddha was surrounded by poor yet smiling people. Buddha imparts some wisdom on him, and humiliated, he runs off and internalizes his rage to the point where he nearly destroys humanity. Buddha remembers none of this encounter. The fact that he was able to do this to a god, as a human, shows just how far above he was above Zerofuku spiritually.
  • Carry a Big Stick: The third form his staff adopts is the shape of a big, spiked club (similar to the kanabo the onis in Japanese mythology use as a weapon), called Nirvana. He can move with it as well as normally despite the size of the club.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Shaddap." The Buddha has no time or patience for other gods, and makes his disdain for them very clear with his rude outbursts. This goes back to his human life, where he'd casually dismiss the people criticizing or trying to control him because he believed he was in the right.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: His ability, Pure Enlightenment Eighth Consciousness, allows him to see a moment into the future by reading the fluctuations of every soul, seeing the movements of their light to determine their actions. However, it doesn't work with Hajun because his soul is devoid of any light, just darkness. Fortunately, once he forms a weapon with Zerofuku to defeat the monster defiling the god's corpse, Hajun is shaken enough that the Buddha once again becomes able to dodge his attacks.
  • Cool Sword: The second form his staff adopts is the form of a "vajra" short sword called Akshaya.
    • Gets a second one after his Six Realms Staff is destroyed by making a Volund with Zero.
  • Curbstomp Battle: The only hits he takes during the first half of the battle with Zerofuku occur after he challenges his opponent to a fistfight without their powers, and he still wins the exchange handily. Otherwise, he dodges and blocked and counters each and every single attack with absolutely no effort whatsoever. This helps sell the seriousness of the situation when Hajun stabs him through the foot and gores out one of his eyes.
  • Defector from Decadence: As in his life and mythology, Buddha rejects the decadent and indulgent ways of his former life among the Gods to forge his own path by fighting for humanity.
  • Deity of Human Origin: Buddha was originally a human who achieved enlightenment and eventually ascended to godhood, though he still fully supports humanity and had no intention of fighting for the gods.
  • Dodge the Bullet: When Ebisu shoots his melting bullets at him, Buddha effortlessly dodges them all, to the surprise of the Lucky God, who is left unable to say anything after seeing this feat. It is implied (according to the thoughts of Ebisu), that what Buddha did there was another different thing, but he's cut by Loki before the audience gets to know what it is. Chapter 47 reveals that Buddha used his Combat Clairvoyance to dodge them before they were even shot.
  • Empathic Weapon: Buddha's Six Realms Staff responds to his emotions and transforms accordingly depending on the situation.
  • Enlightenment Superpowers: Buddha's aforementioned Combat Clairvoyance is stated to be something he gained upon achieving enlightenment.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Appears to have lotuses inside his eyes. It's shown that he gained them upon reaching enlightenment.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Since recovering from his injuries, Buddha has added a black eyepatch to his ensemble in order to cover his destroyed left eye, having apparently been unable to have it healed completely.
  • Eye Scream: While trying to block Hajun's Heaven Piercing Demon Drill with Ahimsa, is shown that after the attack pierced the shield, it also injured Buddha's left eye, leaving him one-eyed.
  • Fangs Are Evil: For some reason, his canines are really sharp and stick out from the rest of his teeth, giving him an oni-like appearance in some panels. Flashbacks indicate that he had fangs even back in his mortal days. The "evil" part is subverted, though, as he betrays the Gods for humanity.
  • For Happiness: In life, upon reaching enlightenment, he adopted this as a personal creed as he travelled across India helping others on his own terms.
  • Forgiveness: After the confrontation with Odin is resolved, Buddha learns directly from Beelzebub himself that he was responsible for implanting the seed of Hajun into Zerofuku. Upon learning this, Buddha looms over Beelzebub, pulls out the handle of Zerofuku's Misery Cleaver... and smacks the Lord of the Flies on the back of the head. When questioned about why he's choosing not to try to kill him, he explains that while he can acknowledge that hatred will always exist, he refuses to let himself be controlled by it and would rather continuing walking the "path of light" with Zero.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: He's smart enough to be implied to have developed the Volund system, and he's always chewing on a lollipop. As seen when Zeus and Odin interrupt the fight he was having with Loki and the Seven Lucky Gods, he carries more of them with him.
  • Good Feels Good: Once Siddhartha realizes that his enlightenment has made him truly free to do whatever he wants, and that he should use that freedom to pursue happiness, he promptly spends years comforting and rescuing people from misery and misfortune, because that is what makes him truly happy.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Once Buddha begins teaching Zerofuku to accept himself, he throws aside his divine weapon and challenges his opponent to an honest fistfight, which helps Zerofuku to overcome his grief and attain happiness.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: As a former human who ascended to godhood purely off his own enlightenment, he naturally stands as this for humanity. Even six rounds in, he still gets people praying for him despite all the other gods bringing humanity closer to extinction. Given he's also almost definitely responsible for teaching the Valkyries how to perform Volund giving humans a chance to fight back, on top of choosing to fight for humanity directly, he's also a Greater-Scope Paragon to Brunhilde's Big Good.
  • Grin of Audacity: After swiping Heimdall's horn and announcing that he represents humanity, the Buddha bares a massive toothy grin at the impossibly offended gods and the utterly baffled masses of humanity.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Betrays the gods to fight as a champion of humanity. Although it's questionable if he even was a villain to begin with.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After Hajun manages to block the impact of his Karma-Destroying Samsara Cycle: Eternal, he manages to impale Buddha on the stomach with his axe-like pincer appendage. However, Buddha, far from giving up, reaffirms his desire to save humans if the gods are gonna abandon them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Before his battle, Buddha comes across as a lazy, egotistical, and fairly unpleasant person. He initially starts belittling Zerofuku and treating him cruelly, kicking him and even claiming he doesn't knows who he is when he announces his hatred towards him. However, towards the climax of their fight, he reveals that his true intention was for Zerofuku to reach happiness, and those insults were in truth a way for Zerofuku to realize he's the only one who can make himself happy.
  • Logical Weakness: He may have the ability to see the future but it’s of little use when the next attack he sees is one he cannot possibly dodge. But it is an attack Buddha can block.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: The fourth form his staff adopts is the shape of a large, elongated shield called Ahimsa. It's sturdy enough to tank a direct hit from a misery-powered impact from Zerofuku's Misery Cleaver without suffering any damage.
  • Manchild: Brunhilde describes him as "History's greatest Adolescent" due to the fact that he seemingly follows his own whims regardless of what others think and hates those who try to stop him from doing so.
  • Martial Arts Staff: Buddha's weapon is a monk staff with a prayer wheel on one end, known as the Six Realms Staff. It doubles as a Morph Weapon too.
  • Morph Weapon: While normally in the form of a staff his weapon can take on multiple forms, So far we have seen:
    • First Realm: Divine Realm, Wish Granting Wheel Kannon - Lokapala, which is a halberd.
    • Second Realm: Human Realm, Unshakeable Cord Kannon - Akshaya, which is a Cool Sword.
    • Third Realm: Animal Realm, Horse-Faced Kannon - Nirvana, which is a club or a mace.
    • Fourth Realm: Asura Realm, Eleven Faced Kannon - Ahimsa, which is a shield.
    • Fifth Realm: Petra Realm, Holy Kannon - Salakayas, which is a Sinister Scythe.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Unlike the majority of god redesigns, Buddha appears to be some sort of modern hipster.
  • Oddly Shaped Sword: After forming a Volund with Zero he gets a sword based on the Seven-Branched Sword called Great Nirvana Sword: Zero.
  • Oh, Crap!: Buddha has a brief moment of worry after using his foresight to see Zerofuku transforming his Divine Weapon into a massive size, though he quickly regains his composure and defends against the attack. He gets a much bigger one after Zerofuku is forcefully transformed into Hajun, especially since his foresight does not appear to work on the creature at all.
  • One-Man Army: Has no issue with taking on all of the Seven Lucky Gods and Loki simultaneously.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Upon witnessing the redeemed Zerofuku transform into Hajun, the demon berserker of the Netherworld, and realising his foresight cannot affect him, Buddha retreats and eyes his new opponent cautiously, turning serious for the first time since the fight began.
    • After Hajun informs him that Zerofuku had been fully consumed, Buddha loses it and experiences an emotion that he had long ago abandoned: hatred.
  • Oral Fixation: Normally is either sucking on a lollipop or eating sweets. He even makes his arena entrance chewing bubblegum.
  • The Power of Hate: When Hajun mocks Zero after announcing he ate him, Buddha experiences hatred, an emotion he rejected a long time ago. This allows him to unleash his Preta Realm ''Salakayas''.
  • The Power of Love: Upon unleashing his Great Nirvana Sword: Zero after forming a Volund pact with Zerofuku, Brunhilde (moved to tears by the pureness of the weapon) describes the Volund as being the opposite of Zerofuku's Misery Cleaver, being a weapon that takes Buddha's compassion as its main fuel rather than misery.
  • Rocket-Powered Weapon: The Salakayas form of his weapon has a lion head opposite of the scythe which can discharge a large amount of energy to greatly increase the weapon's speed and cutting power.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: His entire philosophy in a nutshell. The Buddha has no time or patience for anyone or anything trying to limit the happiness or well-being of himself others, and will always act in whatever manner he believes will have the most positive outcome.
  • Sinister Scythe: After Hajun declares he consumed Zerofuku while insulting him, Buddha's hatred makes him unleash his fifth realm (Preta), which takes the form of a huge scythe with the menacing face of a Chinese guardian lion on it, named Salakayas. It has the ability to land powerful blows and impulse itself with gusts of wind.
  • Smug Smiler: He's not above giving his rivals condescending smiles to show how much above them he thinks he is.
  • Smug Super: Buddha is strong and he knows it, and thus is quick to condescend towards others while having the power to back up his arrogance, not having a problem confronting alone both Loki and the Seven Lucky Gods at the same time (mind you that both Loki and Bishamonten are strong enough to be representatives of the gods during the tournament), or even laugh at the face of Zeus himself when he warns him to no start more troubles, a suicidal action that any other character would have regretted.
  • Synchronization: After his Six Realms Staff is destroyed and he is put in a near-death state, Buddha's hand is grabbed by the spirit of Zerofuku and both of their fates become intertwined in the same manner as the Volund ritual, forming a brand new divine weapon.
  • Übermensch: After gaining enlightenment, Siddhartha frequently declares his intention to do whatever he wants and pursue happiness on his own terms without letting society tell him what to do or how to live, starting with abandoning his kingdom and his responsibilities. But in practice, it turned out that what Siddhartha wanted to do was to help people, using his newfound sense of freedom to feed and comfort monks who were undergoing fasting and mortification, saving children set for Human Sacrifice, and eventually, to fight on the side of humanity against their divine masters, saving poor Zerofuku from misery and despair in the process.
  • The Unreveal: The sixth form correlating with the Infernal Realm of Buddha's Six Realms Staff is never revealed, as the divine weapon is destroyed by Hajun while it is only in its fifth form.
  • Unstoppable Rage: The shock of Hajun revealing he consumed Zerofuku awakens the emotion of hatred inside him (a poisonous emotion he rejected time ago), unleashing his fifth realm and showing a menacing, demonic aura that leaves the spectators astonished. Then he proceeds to attack the demon with powerful blows, showing how truly pissed he is.
  • Walking Spoiler: Trying to know much about his role in the manga will inevitably spoil the fact that he's the fighter of the human side in the sixth match. Discussing the fight itself will also spoil many of the twists involving his opponent.
  • Weapon-Based Characterization: The ability to change the shape of his weapon depending on the emotion he feels at the time (meaning he doesn't control the shape it can acquire) fits his life motto of freely following his own whims without caring about what others think about him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Buddha calls out Brundhilde for the suspicious nature of her plan after informing her of his betrayal, and ponders what lows she would sink to in order for it to succeed. As he departs, he leaves her with a sinister warning about not standing by if she goes too far. However, by the end of the Round Six, he seems to have developed a genuine liking for her, as he tells her he really likes "her eyes full of worldly desires" before being taken to the infirmary.
  • Wild Card: He's this for the gods. He's enlisted as a fighter representing them, but his allegiance is shaky at best, with him having helping the valkyries and humans by teaching them how to do the Volund ritual and only having respect for himself and nobody else. Even Zeus lets him to do whatever he wants, opting for not taking offense for his irreverent actions and let him leave the encounter with Loki and the Seven Lucky Gods unscathed than trying to punish him for being a supposed traitor. He finally reveals his allegiance in the sixth round, entering as the Gods' representative before walking over to the other side of the arena and stating that he is going to fight for humanity.
Buddha: Friends or enemies. Good or bad. Gods or humans. It's all just noise to a god like me. Only one thing in the universe is certain: I do what I want.
  • Wrecked Weapon: His Six Realms Staff is destroyed during his battle with Hajun. He gets a replacement soon after.

The King Where It All Began
Click here to him without his blindfold

"Humble yourselves. It matters not what this place is. You're in the presence of an emperor. The throne is where I am."

The founder of the Qin Dynasty and the first emperor to unify China, a confident, cocky man who believes himself to be the only true king of the entire world. After slaying the demon god Chiyou, he also became the first emperor to truly rule China. Among the Einherjar, he's the seventh to fight in Ragnarok, going against Hades.
  • The Ace: One of the humans who Brunhilde thought could take on Poseidon with a win. And it shows, he seems to also be able to harm gods without a Volund.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He was 12 years old when he became the king of Qin.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: While Qin Shi Huang is often depicted in traditional Chinese art as a slightly overweight, bearded old man, here, he's portrayed at his hypothetical peak (i.e. his youth.) That said, his cameo in the Lü Bu spin-off has an older of him depiction in one panel.
  • An Arm and a Leg: His entire left arm is severed after his Shi Huang Yan Cut failed to redirect Hades' ultimate attack, Ichor: Eos.
  • Attack Reflector: Thanks to a technique in his Chi You - Armor Form called Heavenly Hand of Defense, he's able to deflect Hades' Persephone Roa using his Volund to deflect the attack then hit Hades with a shockwave strong enough to slam him against a nearby wall.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He has extreme confidence in himself to the point that he walks into the gods' spectator section and sits on their seat because he finds it splendid, even attacking Ares for trying to move him out of it, and order him and Hermes to prostate themselves. In his battle against Hades, he boasts that he is the superior king after blasting the Netherworld King with his own attack.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: How did he achieve the status of the first Emperor of China? By making the six of Seven Warring States submit. Even Chi You was subdued.
  • Aura Vision: Possesses the ability to see the flow of Qi in a person's body and by striking the cruxes where that Qi accumulates, or "stars" as he calls them, he can weaken the power of their technique. This becomes crucial to his eventual victory, as he sees that Hades' Ichor: Desmos now possesses a "star" as well that he strikes with his Tortoise Ripple, weakening it enough that the power he stored from Hades' attack combined with his own power was able to destroy it.
  • Badass Boast:
    • After flipping Ares over for trying to take him out of the God’s VIP section, he tells both him and Hermès to humble themselves. For it doesn’t matter where he is;
Qin: You are in the presence of an emperor. The throne is where I am.
    • Later, after hitting Hades for the first time in the fight, he declares himself to be the true king of all.
Qin: Hades, King of the Netherworld, was it? Let me tell you something, there can only be one king in the world, and that man is I.
  • Blindfolded Vision: He wears one not because he is blind, but because if he sees a wound on his opponent's body, he receives the same wounds upon himself. His backstory reveals Chun Yan gave it to him to alleviate the pain he was suffering from his condition.
  • Blood Knight: While less pronounced than other combatants, he too was waiting for some time for his fight to come and jumped with excitement when Brunhilde informed him that he was fighting in Round 7.
Qin: Hao! Finally, I'd grown tired of waiting!
  • Blow You Away: While in his Chi You - Crossbow Form, Qin can use a technique called Tortoise Ripple, an invisible ball of air blown from Qin's mouth that targets the enemy's flow of Qi in order to weaken their attacks or defense at critical moments.
  • Cast from Hit Points: He has Mirror-Touch Synesthesia, which causes him to be scarred by whatever injury he sees. Due to his childhood experiences any hatred he feels towards him will also cause him intense pain.
  • The Charmer: When Alvitr is fuming at him for keeping her waiting so that he could make a flamboyant entrance from the gods' private box, literally walking on top of a collection of all of China's other emperors, it takes all of one sentence for the Emperor's charisma to leave her in a puddle of embarrassment after he literally sweeps her off her feet.
  • Cool Sword: After receiving all of Alvitr's power, the right arm of Qin's Almighty Spaulders reforms into a blade called the Shi Huang Goujian Sword, an extension of his Volund that can also be imbued with his ability to absorb and deflect the force of enemy attacks.
  • Creepy Centipedes: A close-up to his face reveals he has a centipede tattoo on his right cheek.
    • A close-up of his back in one of the panels shows that he has a centipede tattoo going down his spine.
  • David Versus Goliath: He was smaller and weaker than Chiyou, but managed to defeat him after a long battle of six days thanks to his tenacity and a martial art he developed through the fight that deflects and returns the energy of the attack of an enemy (later given the same name as the demon god).
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: He casually walks into the Chief God’s VIP section, sits on a chair (Which Hades was sitting on) to wait for his match, flips Ares on his face when the latter tries to remove him, then tells both him and Hermès to humble themselves.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He first appears briefly in a cameo of the Lü Bu spin-off (depicting him as the emperor who unified China for good), roughly a year before his actual debut in the main series.
  • The Empath: His second backstory reveals he suffers from an extreme case of mirror-touch synesthesia (a rare condition which causes individuals to experience a similar sensation in the same part of the body that another person feels), that in his case manifests so strongly it generates any wound he sees on his body. It went to a point where his condition worsened due to being exposed to the hatred of the people of Zhao daily, making the hatred turn into pain.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Before even receiving a Volund, he defeated by himself the demon god Chi You after a long battle of six days, with only a martial art he developed through the fight (that he named after the demon post-fight). In Ragnarök, he now possesses the Volund he performed with Alvitr, making him a fighter capable of hanging with the mightiest gods.
  • Femme Fatalons: He is shown wearing two zhijiatao (fingernail coverings) on his right hand and three on his left, symbols of nobility and wealth in ancient China.
  • Fingore: In an attempt to intercept Hades' ultimate attack, Ichor: Eos, Qin uses the Heavenly Hand of Defense to redirect it but he failed and the pinky and ring finger from his left hand was cut off.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: He tends to say words in Chinese from time to time, the more notable being hǎo (nice) and moumantai (not to worry). Justified in his case as he's Chinese himself.
  • The Greatest Style: What Qin uniquely brings as one of the Einherjar is his mastery of what is described as the ultimate martial art, Chi You, and the title is warranted; it allows Qin to toss around and redirect the energy of gods even before he gets a Volund.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: While most of his weapon forms are metaphors for his martial arts, Qin's sword form is a bit different. Rather than a metaphorical sword strike, it takes the form of an actual sword constructed of some of Qin's broken armor.
  • Instant Armor: His Volund takes the form of extravagant shoulder plates known as the Almighty Spaulders. The shoulder plates are apparently able to change form depending on Qin's needs, as, after slamming Hades to a wall from the arena, a five-point star appears before Qin with five different weapons on its points (Armor, Spear, Halberd, Crossbow and Sword).
  • No Sense of Direction: Brunhilde grouses that this is the real reason he barges through walls instead of using doors.
  • Older Is Better: He makes his entrance walking down to the arena on a carpeted platform held up by a procession of every other emperor in Chinese history, symbolically acknowledging his place as the first and greatest among them.
  • Older Than They Look: He looks like in his mid-twenties when he meets Chi You, but considering the meeting happened after the unification of China, then he should be in his thirties, nearing forties, as he is 38 when he conquered all of the Warring States.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Though he can be serious when needed, his default expression is a confident, playful smile.
  • Pressure Point: Once he removes his blindfold, he is able to see the cruxes of the Qi flowing through people, which he calls "stars", and can weaken even a deadly attack just by blowing on them. This is known as Chi-You Crossbow Form: Tortoise Ripple.
  • Pride: Seems to be his defining trait. In his debut scene, he's shown to be incredibly arrogant and haughty, to the point he goes to the VIP room where the Greek gods are watching the tournament because he feels it's the best waiting room for him and ask two gods like Hermes and Ares to prostrate before him because he's "the emperor".
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: A flashback shows that during his journey of uniting all of China into one, he is also fighting in the battlefield alongside his soldiers. In Ragnarök too, he's the Emperor who's fighting a god to save humanity.
  • Sins of the Father: As a child he lived as a political prisoner of the state of Zhao, where the populace hated him due to being the prince of the invading nation of Qin. They hated him so much that the moment he was no longer a prisoner of the state the people immediately tried to ambush the caravan carrying him, resulting in the death of his caretaker.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Despite his lithe build, he's able to break through the walls of Valhalla and lift the considerably more muscular Ares without any problem.
  • The Unsmile: As a kid, he sported forced, unnatural smiles to hide the hatred and misery he was feeling due to the mistreatment he suffered when he was held hostage in Zhao. That made people think of him as a Creepy Child. Upon meeting Chun Yan, he started to smile genuinely, however.
  • There Was a Door: During his debut scene, he's seen destroying the walls of the halls of the arena through an unknown method in search of his waiting room, not bothering to use any of the doors present. This serves to further show his arrogance and lack of caring for his actions.

    Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla

Child of Light
Click here to see him without his armor

"Destruction is a most foolish act – the very abandonment of creation itself. Even we Humans, unripe as we are, understand that. Our dirt-stained trial and error... and the sublimely beautiful achievements of our knowledge... our powerful wills envisioning the future. With their driving force, we, the Human race, will constantly create. And... not even you can stop us!"

Humanity's greatest scientist, an eccentric but unparalleled genius so good with inventions to the point of being referred to as a sorcerer because of how out of this world his creations are, hoping to surpass the gods with his science. Among the Einherjar, he's the eighth to fight in Ragnarök, going against Beelzebub.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Tesla's right arm is severed during the climax of Round 8, though he severs it himself as part of a last-ditch gambit for his final attack. Propelling himself forward for a punch, Tesla uses his final Warp to teleport his punching arm behind Beelzebub the moment his defenses are up, creating an unavoidable pincer attack with an impromptu Rocket Punch.
  • Applied Phlebotinum: Tesla's Super Automaton β creates a certain particle, known as the "Super Tesla Particle", that is used to power the seemingly impossible functions of the Powered Armor. The particles are spread along with the electricity generated by Tesla's attacks and react with the Tesla coils on his armor to create the Gematria Zone, allowing him to use abilities such as Anti-Gravity and Teleportation within its space by using the now-concentrated particles. Brunhilde explains that Tesla is the only person who understands how the Super Tesla Particle works, and his ability to make use of such a resource is why she refers to him as "Humanity's Only Sorcerer".
  • Arc Number:
    • Tesla really likes the numbers 3, 6, and 9, and will try to shoehorn those digits into his moves any way he can. For example, his Gematria Zone is a 9.63 by 9.63 meter square.
    • Of those numbers, the real-life Tesla had many idiosyncrasies in his life centered around the number 3. This is reflected in the series with several of Tesla's characteristics involving the number, such as repeating the word "no" three times in three different languages, having three Super Tesla Coils to use for his powerful techniques, and having three conditions for his teleportation to work.
  • Artificial Gravity: In life, Tesla designed patents for many hypothetical superweapons that he simply did not possess the resources to create, including anti-gravity technology. After joining Ragnarök, Tesla had access to divinely produced energy and a group of history's greatest scientists to help fully develop the technology, which he makes use of through his Volund. Activating the Gematria Zone technique allows him to fully utilize the anti-gravity function for his Powered Armor.
  • Attack on the Heart: Tesla dies after getting his heart pierced by Beelzebub's fingers, though he lives long enough to deliver a Rousing Speech before disappearing.
  • Background Halo: His Powered Armor, the Super Automaton β, generates a circular, shiny ring at his back. Given how Tesla is compared to a godlike figure, the halo analogy is not coincidental.
  • Badass Bookworm: He may specialize in science, but he's also a competent enough as a fighter to be included among the rest of the humanity's champions in Ragnarok.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He somewhat childishly insists in others calling his genius the product of science instead of magic and rudely inspects Gondul to check if she's good enough to be his partner, but he isn't the greatest scientist known to humans for anything and his scientist colleagues look up to him with the utmost respect.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "It's science!"
    • ""No. Nien. Nyet."""
  • Cerebro Electro: Tesla is one of the most renowned scientists of all time. His Volund takes the form of Powered Armor that allows him to generate and control electricity.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: Underneath his suit, Tesla is actually ripped! Well-defined physique and muscular arms! Something you wouldn't expect from a scientist.
  • Clarke's Third Law: Implied since Brunhild calls him humanity's only sorcerer and that he hates the word magic and calls it science.
  • Deader than Dead: His fate after being fatally wounded by Beelzebub, though not without leaving hope for humanity as stated in Rousing Speech below.
  • Domain Holder: The technique called Gematria Zone - Prison of the Gods creates a large cage of energy that surrounds the arena. The cage is filled with high concentrations of the "Super Tesla Particle", which allows Tesla to perform feats that defy the laws of physics while within its space.
  • Explaining Your Power to the Enemy: Outright gleefully exposits his science to his opponent, its functions and its limits and its weaknesses. Even his supporters at the audience moodily lampshade this.
  • Flash Step: After activating Gematria Zone and utilizing its anti-gravity features, Tesla can dart around at impossible speeds with a technique he calls Tesla Step. He doesn't actually increase his base speed by much, but can now reach his maximum velocity in a single motion without needing to accelerate, a process called Zero-Max.
  • Friendly Enemy: Tesla acts as one towards his opponent Beelzebub. He is continuously friendly and cheerful to his enemy even as Beelzebub demeans his skills and attempts to kill him, at one point flashing a bright smile and complimenting Beelzebub's technique after nearly being sliced in half.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Tesla tends to give his techniques cheesy and on-the-nose names such as Plasma Pulse Punch and Tesla Step, something that his allies, Marie Curie in particular, consider to be deeply embarrassing.
  • A God Am I: Tesla gives quite an impressive Blasphemous Boast once he activates Gematria Zone:
"In this 9.63 by 9.63 meter world, you are no longer god. I am!"
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Tesla combines Gratuitous French, Gratuitous German and Gratuitous Russian through his habit of responding to others with different versions of the word "no".
  • Hollywood Atheist: Downplayed. He doesn't outrights negates the existence of the gods, but treats their status and powers as merely the law of physics, and hates when others refer to his work as "magic" instead of "science".
  • Holy Backlight: Several manga panels depict Tesla being lit from behind by rays of light as someone comments how "miraculous" or "godly" he is. The most obvious example would be when Heimdall refers to him as "The Man who tried to bring humanity closer to the Gods" as an airborne Tesla is T-posing, his figure obscured by the sunlight behind him.
  • Insistent Terminology: He's very quick to point out that his inventions aren't the product of magic, but science.
  • Mythology Gag: He's seen with an automaton pigeon on his shoulder, referencing the fondness the Real Life Tesla felt towards these animals. Like his real-life counterpart, Tesla is also obsessed with the numbers 3, 6 and 9.
  • Nerds Are Sexy: He certainly is a nerd, and it's prevalent throughout his fight. He is also very attractive, that the Valkyrie Gondul, who dislikes being touched by those she considers unattractive, doesn't mind his touch.
  • Power Fist: Tesla's aptly named Plasma Pulse Punch is a powerful technique that converts Gondul's life energy into high-voltage electricity that is concentrated within his armor's fists, releasing massive amounts of energy instantaneously when he punches.
  • Powered Armor: His Volund, the Super Automaton β, takes the shape of a complex, bulky mechanical armor similar to that of Iron Man. The armor converts Gondul's own divine life force into energy, using the valkyrie as a Living Battery to power the suit and its attacks. Capable of electricity generation, levitation, and teleportation.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Tesla's most powerful variation of the Plasma Pulse Punch is called Mobius, which uses the Zero-Max process to unleash a barrage of punches at impossible speeds that not even Souji Okita can properly observe.
  • Recoil Boost: Tesla can release large amounts of energy from the devices on the wrists of his armor to propel himself at high speeds.
  • Rocket Punch: Tesla manages to pull off this move with his own severed arm.
  • Rousing Speech: After losing to Beelzebub and beginning to disintegrate, Tesla comforts the audience that his death is not the end and that if humanity continues to persevere, they will overcome the gods and survive.
  • Science Hero: Nikola Tesla is one of the human representatives of Ragnarok, going against Beelzebub to fight for humanity's survival. With the aid of his scientist colleaguesnote  and the material from Gondul, Tesla designs and equips the Super Automaton β, a high-tech suit of armour, in hopes of triumphing against divine might.
  • Shock and Awe: As expected of Nikola Tesla, he can generate massive amounts of electricity from his powered suit, first doing so during his dramatic entrance into the arena.
  • Teleportation: While within the Gematria Zone, Tesla can create points of high particle concentration in certain locations that he can teleport to with a process called Tesla Warp. There are limitations on how to use the ability, as it takes roughly a minute to synchronize with the concentrated particles, his movement is restricted to certain areas, and he can only warp three times before too much energy is used.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Played With. Tesla's suit is immensely powerful and has many of Tesla's most outlandish inventions implemented within that only the man himself can understand and use effectively. However, it becomes clear that despite his genius, he lacks true combat experience and is forced to resort to relatively simple charged punches as his main way of doing damage despite supplementing it with techniques like his Tesla Warp and Gematria Zone. In addition, the suit itself is the only one of its kind in history, making it a prototype that needs to be field-tested in battle. This is one of the factors that leads to his loss, as Beelzebub has honed his battle instincts for centuries and has a better understanding of his powers and limitations.
  • World's Smartest Man: His unique feature as one of the Einherjar. Where his other genius colleges falter, he keeps going with intellectual might, and the only reason he could not create the ultimate weapons of his conception is that the world itself lacked the necessary resources. Upon finally getting a Volund's support, he could manifest his greatest concepts as means of offense, and only he can truly understand how to use them.

    King Leonidas I

King Leonidas I

Origin: Greece

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leonidas_2.png
The Rebel King

"Look little lady, in this world, there are just three things that I love. Reading in a hammock, enjoying a glass of wine with some Spartan cheese and number three... using these two hands to knock those haughty pieces of shit so-called "god" motherfuckers down a peg."

A Spartan warrior-king who stood firmly against the armies of Persia at Thermopylae. A gruff, hot-blooded man who marches to the beat of his own drum, he originally planned to fight last but changes his mind after hearing who the next fighter for the gods is. Among the Einherjar, he's the ninth to fight in Ragnarök, going against Apollo.
  • The Ace: One of the three humans Brunhilde considered to fight against Poseidon.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: A particularly noteworthy example among the Einherjar who have mostly worn era-appropriate, if stylized, attire (with the exception of Buddha). Leonidas is instead garbed in a modern-day soldier's outfit, including combat boots, camouflage pants and a black turtleneck with leather straps. This is likely to reflect his status as "History's Mightiest Rebel", especially considering that he entered the arena wearing his Spartan helmet and cloak and chose to discard them. There is also some slight Shown Their Work here; as fans have pointed out, modern armies such as the US use Sparta slogans for themselves, so Leonidas' appearance is possibly in reference to that.
  • Badass Bookworm: He is first introduced lying on a hammock reading a book. He even says that it's one of the 3 things he likes the most to Göll.
  • Cigar Chomper: Leonidas is often seen with a large cigar in his mouth. Even after practically swallowing his first cigar in the opening of his fight with Apollo, he immediately pulls out and lights another one from a small case full of them.
  • Covered with Scars: Is visibly lined with many scars all across his body, reflecting the harsh training of Sparta and the many brutal battles he's fought in.
  • Deader than Dead: Leonidas ultimately loses his battle against Apollo and fades into Niflhel alongside Geirölul.
  • Defiant to the End: After having been dealt a fatal wound, Leonidas grabs Apollo's shoulder and throws one last punch at his face. Though he manages to leave a bruise, the majority of Leonidas' strength had faded at that point, so it mostly served as one last act of rebellion against the gods.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Straight up orders Apollo to stop complementing him and giving him chances to forfeit and ensure his personal survival, because he's someone who'll fight for his own reasons, no matter what other people want or say. It's this that gets Apollo to admit he actually does loath Leonidas a bit, but ironically, this is what finally allows the two to regard each other as worthy opponents and understand each other.
  • Fighting Your God: Leonidas is the first Einherjar to be pitted against one of the Gods of his own culture, and as is repeatedly mentioned, he absolutely hates Apollo for his arbitrary demands of the Greek people.
  • Frontline General: Frontline king, in fact. Even when accompanied by an entire army, Leonidas will always be the first to confront the enemy, as was the case during the Battle of Thermopylae. It is because he always leads from the front that his soldiers and many others have come to admire his back, viewing it as a symbol of Leonidas' bravery and resolve.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Despite falling against Apollo, he is satisfied at seeing the Sun God prove that he wasn't as bad as he believed, as well as proving that Spartan willpower stands above all others.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In life, Leonidas and the rest of the 300 fought an uphill battle against thousands of Persians at Thermopylae in order to halt their invasion of Greece. Thus far, he is the only Einherjar to have explicitly died while saving others as the rest of them either died outside of battle or were fighting for their own purposes.
  • Invulnerable Knuckles: After Leonidas destroys in a single punch a statue of Apollo to show that he doesn't fear the god, his knuckles are slightly bleeding.
  • It's Personal: His decision to fight in the 9th round is purely because of his past with Apollo, who decreed no fighting would occur during a festival of his right in the middle of the Persian invasion. Leonidas ignored the decree and shattered a statue of Apollo with his bare hands in defiance, and during Ragnarök calls the God of Light out for screwing Sparta over.
  • Killer Yoyo: The first transformation of his Völund is similar to the Diskarmor from Rygar since it's attached to a chain and can be swung out like a flail while also having buzzsaws connected to it.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: The base form of his Völund is a Spartan aspis (round shield) that he holds akin to Captain America. The final form of his Völund sheds the steel coat of the shield to become a bronze apsis called Aletheia Sparta or Shield of Truth.
  • Made of Iron: While hardly the only fighter to be this, he's certainly notable for being so, seemingly to make up for his lack of speed. Throughout his fight, he took dozens of punches from Apollo with minimal harm and even survived being shot by numerous arrows of light, which burned directly through his body and left him riddled with holes. The latter feat is made even more impressive by Zeus' claim that throughout Heaven, only he could hope to survive being directly struck by them.
Apollo: *after Leonidas survives his first strike* Oh? For a human, you're tougher than I expected.
  • Magnetic Hero: Originally, he was fully prepared to march off to defend Thermopylae by himself, but his charismatic presence was so overwhelming that soldiers quickly flocked to him without question until the 300 were assembled.
  • Morph Weapon: The true nature of his Völund is the ability to switch forms depending on what he needs, though compared to Buddha's Six Realms Staff, the transformations are cruder and more mechanical in appearance.
  • Naytheist: In life, he refused to acknowledge the Gods and ignored the Oracles of Apollo's demands of delaying marching to war for the sake of a festival in Apollo's name, with him demonstrating his irreverence by obliterating a statue of Apollo. His open defiance of the gods is what earns him the title of History's Mightiest Rebel.
  • Polite Villains, Rude Heroes: The Rude Hero. Leonidas is a foul-mouthed individual, and most of his swear words are directed straight towards Apollo. In addition, much of his status as a rebel comes with rudely refusing to follow the requests of those around him. Considering his opponents are fighting to end humanity, it's not like his rudeness is unjustified.
  • Refusal of the Call: Leonidas initially says he'll pass representing humankind for round 9, claiming that he's better as an opener or closer of Ragnarök. He changes his mind when he finds out that the representative for the gods for the ninth round is Apollo.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Zig Zags between this and an enthusiastic Blood Knight. In his backstory, just prior to going off to stand against the Persians at Thermopylae, Leonidas makes it clear that he has no real desire to go to war, as he would rather relax and certainly does not want to die. However, he makes it equally clear that when something threatens him or his people, he cannot just stand idly by and will still choose to fight, rules and personal desires be damned.
Leonidas: When it's time to fight, you do so with your own will. That's what it means to be Spartan.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: The second of the Einherjar to be a member of royalty while still fighting against the gods to save humanity, after Qin Shi Huang. The "king" aspect seems to be downplayed compared to Qin, focusing more on his role as a warrior.
  • Shield Bash: Leonidas' default method of attacking when his Völund hasn't been transformed into a different kind of weapon, which is appropriate given that the Spartans were well known for using their shields for simultaneous offense and defense. Fittingly, his final move, Phalanx Lambda, is a shield charge that utilizes Leonidas' strength and the power of his Shield of Truth.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Not the only character in the manga to utter curse words, but definitely the one who loves using them the most. Leonidas uses the crudest words he can more often than not, and Apollo takes the brunt of most of that foul language.
  • Torso with a View: After being shot by one of Apollo's arrows, there's a small hole in Leonidas' chest that shows it having burned through his body and into the stands behind him, though this still isn't enough to fell him. By the round's end however, he ends up having a more lethal hole blown through his abdomen by Apollo's final move.
  • Use Your Head: The first truly significant blow that Leonidas manages to land on Apollo is a devastating headbutt that crunches the Sun God's nose and leaves him open to his Phalanx Nemesis attack. This makes him among the few Einherjar who manage to harm a god without the use of a divine weapon.

The Demon Child

"My body feels strong. The atmosphere is so nostalgic. And... I've got the strongest opponent. Finally, we can cut each other down as much as we want!"

The captain of the first unit of the Shinsengumi, a special police force in Kyoto during the late shogunate period. A prodigious swordsman despite his youth, Okita's life was cut short due to tuberculosis, leaving him deeply ashamed of having been unable to fight to his fullest; something he intends to correct while fighting for humanity. Among the Einherjar, he's the tenth to fight in Ragnarök, going against Susano'o no Mikoto.
  • Blood Knight: Soji looks forward to his turn to fight in Ragnarok. He yearns to die in a spectacular battle like Leonidas and the other Ragnarok fighters, something he couldn't do in his life due to tuberculosis. By the time his turn comes, he's thrilled beyond relief to fight the strongest opponent he'll face (Susano'o no Mikoto) in a familiar battleground (Bakumatsu era Kyoto), at peak strength.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Soji wears the distinctive light-blue haori of the Shinsengumi, and is a warrior fighting to save humanity from extinction.
  • Cast from Hit Points: He possesses an ability known as The Demon Child that allows him to break past the limits of his body to perform superhuman feats of speed and strength. This is achieved by his heart pumping three times the normal amount to awaken all the muscle cells of his body, which is noted to also be a rapid combustion of his own life. This may have contributed to his premature end in life.
  • Child Prodigy: He earned the position as the captain of the first unit of the Shinsengumi as a teenager.
  • Combat Parkour: To compensate for his smaller stature, Soji is shown utilizing the buildings populating the arena to perform rapid aerial maneuvers and even increase his already immense speed by using them as springboards.
  • Cuteness Proximity: He has a fondness for cute animals, shown when he gets giddy at the sight of Odin's talking ravens. This characterization is transplanted from Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem, where is often seen playing with small animals.
  • Fighting Your God: Soji is the second of the Einherjar to fight a god from his own culture, being specifically chosen by Susano'o no Mikoto himself as his opponent due to his skill in kenjutsu, the style of swordsmanship that Susano'o created.
  • Flash Step: He demonstrates incredible speed in the opening moments of the fight, nearly catching Susano'o off-guard and causing Ares to believe he teleported.
  • Hellish Pupils: Upon having his eyes revealed from his bangs.
  • Master Swordsman: He has to be after being made into a captain for the Shinsengumi's first unit at a young age after all.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Having fought in the urban battlefield of Bakumatsu-era Kyoto, Soji has been in countless near-death situations and has allowed those experiences to hone his sword skills and instincts. In practice, this means that he is willing to use techniques that are both risky and unusual but ultimately effective without any hint of fear. Kojiro even cites this as the major aspect that he surpasses the more technically skilled Susano'o in.
Kojiro: Okita surpasses that god in just one thing. And that is... the number of times he's skirted with death.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Soji is of considerably short stature, especially compared to his opponent, and is youthful looking enough that some members of the audience believe him to be an actual child. Yet he is also the strongest swordsman of the Bakumatsu, able to move at incredible speeds and, according to Hermes, possesses enough power to cleave even Susano'o in half with a single stroke while using The Demon Child.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Soji eyes begin glowing red when he becomes excited during battle, a physical manifestation of his body breaking its limits.
  • Samurai Ponytail: Sports one, though it is shorter than Kojiro's.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Has a scarf on his neck with a squared design.
  • Slasher Smile: He gives a rather chilling one while wondering of his turn to fight in Ragnarok.
  • Transplant: Soji and Isami Kondo, in personality and design, come from their depiction in Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem, another work of Shinya Umemura (one of the authors of Shuumatsu). He's even voiced by the same voice actor who portrayed Soji in the chibi comedic spin-off Chiruran animation in the anime of Record of Ragnarok.

    Michel Nostradamus

Michel Nostradamus

Origin: France

Prophet of the Century
A French prophet known for the infamous crime of destroying the Bifrost, the gate connecting Valhalla and Helheim that only the most important of the gods can access. He was thrown into Helheim for his crimes until Brunhilde rescued him for Ragnarök. He is set to participate in Ragnarök at some point.
  • The Ace: The joker who can surpass the Ace, so he could possibly surpass Adam as humanity's ACE! Also one of the three humans who Brunhild thought could win against Poseidon.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Rather than an old bearded man, here he's shown as a youthful teen with delicate features.
  • Blood Knight: He waits for Brunhilde in the Einherjar selection room to ask her for his turn to fight, implying he's eager to show his power. She however tells him it's not his turn yet, as he's the "joker" of their side.
  • Boxed Crook: He was condemned to be trapped in Helheim after he destroyed the Bifrost through unknown means, being the only human in history to be thrown there. Sometime later, Brunhilde freed him from there because she deems his strength necessary to win Ragnarök (though from her words, is implied Nostradamus could have escaped from Helheim at any time if he desired), essentially recruiting a powerful criminal just in case.
  • Creepy Crossdresser: He's introduced crossdressing as Brunhilde, to her ire and Goll's confusion. Though he's an Einherjar, and thus this should carry a more positive connotation, he's portrayed as a dangerous criminal and Goll thinks of him as a weirdo.
  • Cute and Psycho: His youthful looks hide a twisted mind able to destroy a sacred interdimensional gate, and he seemed to enjoy his stance in Helheim despite how horrible descriptions on it are. Furthermore, he's also a bit of a Blood Knight.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Despite his effeminate appearance and nothing in his life implying any fighting ability, Brunhilde says Nostradamus is very strong. Strong enough to be humanity's Wild Card.
  • Troll: His debut scene involves him crossdressing as Brunhilde to annoy her, and later tells Goll he prophesied that the gods would win Ragnarök, only for him to reveal he was joking to a bewildered Goll.
  • Wild Card: Brunhilde calls him the "joker" of the human side, as his insincere and twisted personality makes him unreliable. She tells him his turn is still a long way off, implying he's being reserved for another round in case of emergence.

    Sakata Kintoki

Sakata Kintoki

Origin: Japan

A legendary Japanese warrior and a close friend of Buddha. He's set to participate in Ragnarök at some point.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: His rough design is enhanced by a bandana that gives him the vibe of being a tough guy. He's also badass enough to be considered a Ragnarök participant.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Displays a vertical scar on the right of his face that extends from his eye to his cheek. He's a good guy who gets along with the equally benevolent Buddha.
  • Horned Humanoid: He has what appears to be a black horn on the right side of his head. If this means he's more than a human is yet to see.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Kintoki is asked by Buddha to look into the Nordic hero, Siegfried. By the time he returns from his investigation, Kintoki reveals that he journeyed into the Netherworld in his attempts to find him and even tried to break into Tartarus just to get to him. To reiterate, a (presumably) mere mortal traveled to a realm that is only accessible via a doorway restricted to the Chief Gods, walked right up to the most infamous prison in divine history and even battled the demonic guards stationed there within, at most, a few days. While he may have failed to retrieve Siegfried, the man's certainly proven why he is one of the Einherjar.
  • Tricked-Out Shoes: He wears geta sandals that are elevated by axe blades.

    Simo Häyhä

Simo Häyhä

Origin: Finland

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simo_hyh_7.png
A Finnish soldier who fought during the Winter War of 1939-40 between Finland and the Soviet Union, racking up more than 500 confirmed sniper kills within the course of 100 days, earning him the moniker of 'The White Death' by his enemies. He is set to participate in Ragnarok at some point.

He has yet to appear in the series proper, but his design was revealed early due to a popularity poll in 2019 by the authors.
  • Canine Companion: In the image provided by the authors, Simo is curiously shown with a large Finnish Lapphund at his side. He was known to have a lifelong kinship with dogs and became a successful dog breeder after the war, but it is currently unknown how this aspect of his character will be implemented into the manga.
  • Cold Sniper: He provides the page image, being the preeminent example in human history. By all accounts, the real-life Simo was actually more of a Friendly Sniper, but his characterization in the manga is yet to be seen
  • In the Hood: He wears a white cloak that resembles Death's robes, a suitable appearance for someone feared as 'The White Death'.
  • Red Baron: He was given the name belaja smert by his enemies among the Red Army, translating to 'The White Death'.
  • Sniper Rifle: Simo's trademark SAKO M/28-30 rifle is perfectly replicated for this series, including the bayonet and simple iron sights.
