    Yaiba's Group

Yaiba Kurogane

Voiced by: Minami Takayama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Yaiba_Kurogane_3021.jpg

The young protagonist, Yaiba is a strong-willed, easy-going but often cocky kid who was trained by his father Kenjuuro in order to become a great Samurai. After leaving the jungle and returning to Japan, he starts his adventures and the struggle against the wicked Onimaru. Apparently, Yaiba is the chosen warrior able to wield the Raijin Sword without being zapped. Trained by Miyamoto Musashi and with the help of his friends and various magical powers, he fight off the menaces that threat the Earth. As the series proceed, he slowly matures.

  • Air Jousting: Whenever he has to face an enemy capable of flight. Usually a courtesy of his pet vulture, Shonosuke
  • Ancestral Weapon: The swords he use tend to be really old and powerful. In the last arc he's equipped with his father's Bokken (wooden katana)
  • Anime Hair: A classic example of the ludicrously spikey-haired shonen protagonist. He inherited his spikey hair from his father.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: He can use the power of the Giant Orb to increase his size
  • Bad Ass Boast: Okay, maybe not really badass, but he surely can boast
  • Barrier Warrior: With the Ryujin Sword
  • Battle Aura: When using a magical sword. Also the Toujin, which allows him to storm the opponent with a flow of invisile slashes.
  • Berserk Button: Declares Goemon unforgivable when he deliberately toss his shurikens at Sayaka while fighting him.
  • Big Eater: Though mostly early on, as later arcs tend to shift to a more serious tone.
  • Blow You Away: When using the Fujin Katana and the Supreme King Sword.
  • Butt-Monkey: Being the protagonist doesn't stop him from suffering gags and humiliation.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Each and every attack.
  • Chick Magnet: At school he seems to be quite popular with girls...
  • Combat Pragmatist: He's not above tricking his foes, inventing new techniques on the spot and so on. Justified, since he learned by Musashi himself. And also because his enemies are not nice guys.
  • Cool Sword: First he gets to wield the Raijin Sword, which later learns to turn into the Ryuujin Sword with the Ryuujin Orb. Eventually he dual wields it with Onimaru's discarded Fuujin Sword and later merges it to obtain the Supreme King Sword.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He delivered one against the revived Batman in the Onimaru's Fortress Arc.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: His One-shot Doshaburi Giri attack (lit. Deluge Slice) consist in tossing several kitchen knives at the foe from above
  • Demonic Possession: When he loses control of the Raijin Orb he turn into a Psycho Electro Oni. He manage to master it later and avoid possession.
  • The Determinator: A Earth-Shattering Kaboom is the least you need to stop this little guy!
    • Brought to extreme levels in the last arc, where he manages to force the far more skilled Soshi to give up by sheer determination.
  • Diagonal Cut:
    • His Kaminari Giri (Lightning Slice) attack, which leaves a lightning-shaped trail.
    • Also his Juumonji Giri (Cross Slice), which doubles with Power Glows and Dual Wielding
  • Dual Wielding: During the Pyramid Arc.
  • Elemental Powers: He wielded many during the Ryujin arc, including: Making a Splash, Kill It with Fire, Casting a Shadow and Kill It with Ice
  • Expy: Acording to Aoyama himself, Yaiba was modeled after Teppei Uesugi from Ore wa Teppei
  • Heroic BSoD: After his defeat at the hand of Demon Onimaru. And later after being almost killed by Gekko.
  • Idiot Hero: He's quite a dumbass, but can come up with smart strategies.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: The sword of Ryuujin. The Supreme King Sword and, in the ending post- Time Skip, the Kusanagi sword.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Yaiba is often loud, rude and obnoxious. However, he's a good guy at heart, through and through.
  • Light 'em Up: The Supreme King Sword. Apparently the Kusanagi blade in the stinger, which can fly fast enough to reach Mars from the Earth in mere seconds.
  • Noodle Incident: In the epilogue he and his friends (Musashi, Kagetora and Shonosuke) ended up on Mars where they were attacked by a monstrous demon alien. Oh, and he acquired the Kusanagi sword from Okinawa too.
  • Kid Samurai: Self proclaimed, though it's less of a matter of status and more of a matter of being a swordsman.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Whenever he gets serious in battle.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Really really fast.
  • Made of Iron: Jeez, this boy is really something.
    • Harmless Electrocution: Survives being hit by a lightning bolt, which makes Musashi realize that he's ready to master the Raijin Sword.
  • Meaningful Name: Translated, and accounted for name order, his names means Blade Iron.
  • Never Recycle Your Techniques: Whenever his current attack/fighting style isn't good enough, he soon discard it. However he uses his very first technique before dealing the final blow to Onimaru.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: His Jerkassness is the main reason why Onimaru decided to resort to the Fujin Sword to beat him. Also at the end of the Ryuujin Arc.
  • No Social Skills: He is not good at handling everyday situations. He grew up in a jungle with only his father to learn from. He can however speak with animals.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He's very short even for his age, but thanks to his sword skills he's a beast in combat.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red Oni to Onimaru's Blue Oni.
  • Shock and Awe: When wielding the powers of Raijin he can shoot electrical beams from his sword and electrify enemies.
  • Spectacular Spinning: His Senpuken (Whirlwind Sword) consist in removing the Thunder Orb from Raijin's Sword and use the hole left to make it spin at great speed. Also the Kazaguruma (Pinwheel) attack is this.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: He's a spikey-haired young boy with a strong-willed and cocky personality, and he aims to become the strongest swordsman in the world. He's also characterized as a Big Eater early on, though this trait is gradually toned down as the story continues. The story is essentially a coming-of-age journey for him, as he not only grows stronger but matures as well.
  • Super Mode: He got several of them, usually using the power of the currently wielded sword.
  • Sword Beam: When using one of the magical blades.
  • To Be a Master: His goal is to become the strongest in the world.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Briefly during the Ryujin Trials. Also after Emerald and Ryujin's deaths.
  • X-Ray Sparks: Every episode's eyecatch when he gets zapped by lightning.

Sayaka Mine

Voiced by: Kotono Mitsuishi

Sayaka is the daughter of Raizo Mine, an expert kendoka and old rival of Yaiba's father, Kenjuro. At first she sees Yaiba as an annoying brat, but their relationship improves as the series proceed and she travels with the young samurai in his journey to defeat Onimaru. She also carries the Sea-Cucumberman with her. Later in the Kaguya arc, it's revealed that she's the descendant of Taro Urashima and Princess Oto, and thus the new "Dragon Maiden", the Priestess of Ryujin and the key to unleash Kaguya's true form. In the last arc, she manage to wield the Water Demon Longsword and use its powers, and later, in order to stop Orochi's rampage, has Kaguya sealed into her body... and manage to restrain her and slowly change her heart.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: She and Yaiba quarrel quite a lot, but once in a long time they share tender moments.
  • Barrier Maiden: As the "Dragon Maiden" whose Life Energy Kaguya needs the most, and the descendant of two legendary figures from Japanese Myths (Taro Urashima and Otohime).
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Granted, she doesn't get in many fights herself..
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Emerald in the Pyramid Arc
  • Damsel in Distress: Happens quite often, but only in the earlier arcs. She upgrades to an Action Girl
  • Heroic Sacrifice: At least three times, the first one in the fifth trial of Ryujin, the Rope of Fate, in order to show Yaiba the right one. The second time when she decided to go with Gekko in order to save Yaiba's life. Then, she accepted to have Kaguya's Ghost sealed into her body in order to force her to help Yaiba against Orochi and Onimaru.
  • Making a Splash: When she uses the Water Demon Longsword.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: During the Kojiro arc, in order to escape some Mooks she put on Sunglasses, an earring and a fur hat and behaved like a Japanese comedian. It worked even with her mother!
  • Plucky Girl: One cannot say this young woman gives up easily.
  • Sailor Fuku: albeit with a long skirt.
  • She Is All Grown Up: After the three year timeskip in the epilogue.
  • Tsundere: Type 2. She's a rather nice kid, but Yaiba can easily set her off.
  • Token Girl: She's the only woman of the group who's always in.
  • Took A Level In Bad Ass: Well, she managed to keep Kaguya inside her body, and in the end she even made her make a Heel–Face Turn!

Kagetora

voiced by: Hisao Egawa

Yaiba's pet Tiger, he's just a fat, gentle tiger and behaves more like a huge housecat than a proper tiger. He carries Yaiba and the others around on his back and sometimes helped him in his trainings. He's also smarter than Yaiba.

  • Cowardly Lion: Has his splinters of courage.
  • Horse of a Different Color: Usually employed as a land-based transport by the heroes.
  • Meaningful Name: Kagetora means "Tiger Shadow" and its also the name of the famous samurai and warlord Uesugi Kenshin.
  • Mugging the Monster: His introduction has him trying to ambush Yaiba, only to leap right into the fireplace, ruining his and Kenjuro's meal.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Yaiba's pet tiger is non-human. He's a tiger. A wild animal.

Shonosuke

voiced by Ryō Horikawa

Yaiba's pet Vulture follows him around and is used whenever he needs to fly. Also he's responsible for beating Onimaru's pet pidgeons, increasing his hatred towards Yaiba.

  • Air Jousting: Against Bat Guy and Kotaro Fuuma.
  • Horse of a Different Color: When it comes to flying.
  • Made of Iron: Well, he can fly high while carrying all the group minus Yaiba...
  • Misplaced Wildlife: While it is never specified where Yaiba and Kenjuro were staying, vultures have no business being in jungles or in Japan.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Yaiba's pet vulture is non-human. He's a vulture. A wild animal.
  • Remember the New Guy?: A minor case. He appears near the end of the first volume (pretty soon then) but he's treated like a very old friend. Not as bad in the anime, where he appears from the start.

Musashi Miyamoto

voiced by: Reizo Nomoto (pilot film), Masaharu Sato (TV series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Musashi_7590.jpeg

Miyamoto Musashi is a 400 years old man who lived as a hermit on Mount Tengu, where the Raijin Sword is kept. After witnessing Yaiba pulling the sword out of the ground he agreed to become his master and teach him the way of the sword. Despite the age he's still a powerful warrior and more than capable of kicking some ass. He also knows a lot of techniques and strategies, and he can be very wise.

Gerozaemon Geroda

voiced by: Kazunari Tanaka

A Former Hakki, Gerozaemon is the first of them, and he's the Frogman. He was sent by Onimaru to kill Yaiba, but he got defeated and joined his group. Despite being a Oni, he's a really good fellow and a good chef. He often fights alongside Yaiba and the others with his trusty hatchet and his tongue. After Onimaru and Orochi's defeat he turned back into a frog.

  • Alliterative Name: With a repetitive "Gero", which is the Japanese for the frog's croak.
  • The Big Guy: He's the largest member of the group and favors brute strength over technique.
  • Chef of Iron: Well, he's stronger than the average human and can make an excellent Sukiyaki (a sort of stew).
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Downplayed, after being defeated by Yaiba he's kept prisoner by him until the Snakeman reveals that Onimaru wants him dead. With nowhere to go he joins the heroes.
  • Enemy Mine: He and Musashi briefly teamed up in order to stop a possessed Yaiba.
  • Frog Men: He's a humanoid frog with prehensile tongue, webbed hands and feet and, in his first appearence, horizontal slit pupils.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Used to work for Onimaru, but after his failure he joins the good guys.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: During the first battle, Yaiba defeats him by using his own tongue against him.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: It's often really useful in battle and outside it.
  • Punny Name: Gero is the Japanese equivalent of "Croak" or "Ribbit".
  • Weaksauce Weakness: He's afraid of snakes.
  • You Have Failed Me: Onimaru sends the Snakeman to kill him after he failed to get rid of Yaiba.

Seacucumberman

A former Hakki, after the last failed attempt of the Hakki to defeat Yaiba he ends up joining the group. Despite his nature as a Oni, he's just a talking, moving Seacucumber.

  • Calling Your Attacks: Namako Kick! (Seacucumber Kick). Despite having no legs to speak of.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Like Gerozaemon, he ends up joining the Mine household and the heroes.
  • Team Pet: For the main group, as he's usually not of help.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: During the Legendary Spheres Arc, he ends up saving Yaiba and everyone from Basho Matsuo, as he was the only one who escaped the petrifying needles.

Kojiro Sasaki

voiced by: Jurota Kosugi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Kojiro_635.png

Musashi's old rival, this master swordsman was resurrected by the Spiderman in order to become Onimaru's servant. Bent on taking revenge on Musashi, he later sees a new rival in Yaiba who manage to beat him with the power of Raijin. He then decides to follow Yaiba in order to steal his magical sword, but ends up as a stationary member of the group. He wields a magical Katana named Monohoshizao (lit. Laundry Pole), and its blade can stretch at will on command. He joins the Oda Nobunaga Tournament in the last arc but is defeated along the way by Onimaru.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: His sword can easly cut a cliff in half.
  • BFS: Carries a nodachi, the Monohoshizao, which can elongate at will: at full power it's long enough to cover the distance from Tokyo to Niigata.
  • Calling Your Attack: "Grow, Laundy Pole!!"
  • Came Back Wrong: Not really, despite being a zombie he doesn't look different from any other living human.
  • Cutting the Knot: When confronted by Yaiba and an impostor with his appearence, he suggests cutting them both down.
  • Death Is Cheap: He was revived with a Kappa Egg, Dragon Tears, Moth Dust and several slaps on the face.
  • Diagonal Cut: His Tsubame-Gaeshi (Swallow Return) counterattack.
  • Handsome Lech: He's quite a pervert, but the girls seems to like him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Again, he was supposed to be Onimaru's minion when revived, but he only worked with him to slay Musashi. Eventually he became one of the heroes.
    • Heel–Face Revolving Door: a Running Gag during the Onimaru's Fortress arc where he tries to betray the heroes and side with Onimaru, only to accidentally help them against the foe, claiming that it was a ruse. When he finally tries to betray them for real and deliver the Raijin Orb to Onimaru, Spiderman accuses him of playing a trick on them and attacks him.
  • Put on a Bus: During the Legendary Orbs Quest arc he was hilariously defeated by Jubei, who took his place.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: In the anime, his coat is reddish pink: he's anything but a fop.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes, but he's not really evil.
  • The Rival: To Musashi.
  • Time Master: It's revealed that his sword can create portals through time, but he keep this power sealed within the handle using wrappings made from a lion's mane.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Subverted, even if Monohoshizao is snapped, he can turn the blade whole again thanks to the stretching power.

Jubei Yagyu

voiced by: Takaya Hashi

One of the Seven Swordsmen revived by Lord Onimaru, Jubei is a wandering Ronin and pupil of Musashi himself. He's a man of honor and a very serious samurai, and a skilled swordmaster. However when he gets drunk he turn into a violent Wolfman who attacks anyone in sight. He's also prone to try to commit Harakiri quite often. He's last seen in the Oda Nobunaga Tournament where he fight Yaiba for one last time. Three years later, he's Walking the Earth.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: During the Kaguya Arc he's merged with the Moon General Hangestu who take over his body in order to assassinate Yaiba.
  • Booze-Based Buff: If he gets drunk he turns into a Werewolf
  • Calling Your Attacks: In the last arc he does employ several named attacks of the Yagyu Shinkageryu.
  • Chaste Hero: When they rescue the girls from Kaguya's base they all fall for him, though he seems pretty clueless about it. In a later omake chapter he claims that attraction to women is a distraction for those who follow the way of the sword.
  • The Comically Serious: The most serious of the zany heroes, even in ridicolous situations.
  • Counter-Attack: His strongest technique, the "Infinite Stance" allows him to anticipate any incoming slash and strike back.
  • Dual Wielding: A Katana and a Wakizashi. During his Wolf form he once did this while holding the shortsword with his mouth.
  • Eye Scream: Lost his eye to his father/master Munenori. It appears to have been an accident though.
  • Eyepatch of Power: And it's made from a Katana's Tsuba (hilt).
  • Graceful Loser: In the final arc, he genuinely enjoys his battle with Yaiba and holds him no ill will when he's defeated. This behaviour confuses Moroha, who believes that a Samurai should do anything to win.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Quite prone to these.
  • Honor Before Reason: Let's just said he doesn't like the pragmatic strategies of his Old Master Musashi
  • Samurai: Out of the Seven Revived Swordsmen, he's the only proper samurai.
  • Spectacular Spinning: His Wind Gust attack, used only in Wolf form, has him charging the enemy while rotating his entire right arm like a windmill.
  • Master Swordsman: As a master of the Yagyu Shinkage style, he's extremely competent: while he doesn't fare well against superpowered threats, in more grounded settings (as in the final arc) he really shines.

Emerald

A mysterious hooded girl appeared in the Pyramid Arc. She saves Yaiba and heal him with her powers. Later she guides Yaiba&co inside the Pyramid (which she seems to know quite well) and help Yaiba against the various foes inside. She's actually revealed to be the Barrier Soldier, one of the four top class Soldiers, ans a Cyborg, created to lure Yaiba inside the Pyramid. However for some reason she sides with Yaiba instead of betraying him. She's blasted into pieces by the Pyramid Core's Lasers defending Yaiba.

  • Artificial Human: A Soldier created by the Underworld people to act as a defense mechanism.
  • Barrier Warrior: She can heal people and create powerful barriers capable of repelling any attack. She IS actually the Barrier Soldier
  • Emotionless Girl: She never emotes much, despite pleading for help. In fact, she's a robot.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Briefly, then after Jewel's death she's "good" again.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: a quite complicated one: She had her memories about being a Soldier removed, so she only remember the Pyramid and how to stop it. It backfires against her masters in the end.
  • Marshmallow Hell: While hugging Yaiba in order to heal him. He was pleased..
  • Ms. Exposition: During their trip inside the Pyramid.
  • Taking the Bullet: First during Yaiba's fight against Diamond, and it costs her arm. Later she saves him from the lasers of the Core and gets Killed Off for Real. Yaiba was seriously shocked by that and went into Unstoppable Rage.
  • Walking Spoiler: The twist of the arc is that she's one of the bad guy's minions.

Moroha Kurogane

A mysterious and very rich girl who appears in the last arc and introduce herself as Yaiba's little sister. She tells Yaiba about his "impostor" father Kenjuuro and state that he'll meet him in the Oda Nobunaga Tournament. She later follows Yaiba on Yoroi Island and witness his battles in the Tournament.

  • Aloof Big Brother: Despite being his little sister, she basically plays this role
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Arrogant Kendo Girl at least, she's both conceited and firmly believes that her vision of what a samurai should be is unquestionable.
  • Combat Pragmatist: At least Yaiba knows when to hold his strength, but she says that a true samurai should use all his strength in any battle
  • The Comically Serious: She's portrayed as very stern during comedy segments in the manga, which is where most of her humor is derived.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: As she sticks with Yaiba, she quickly mellows down and learn that a Samurai isn't always a killer.
  • Cute Bruiser: For an adorable tyke, she is still a swordswoman who keeps up with the final chapters version of Yaiba skill-wise, which is saying something since he's taken on Wind Gods, Lightning Gods, Dragon Gods, and Moon Goddesses as well as a whole parade of monsters.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: She can knock several adult men unconscious in mere seconds, using a Shinai.
  • Lightning Bruiser: See above. She accomplished said feat in a few seconds
  • Tsundere: Usually quite cold and bitchy, but has also shown a more tender side of herself.
  • Tyke Bomb: She trained herself from a very young age in order to beat Kenjuuro's Killer, who she identifies as Yaiba's Dad.

     Onimaru's Main Faction

Takeshi Onimaru

voiced by: Ryō Horikawa, Kenjiro Tsuda (Case Closed episode 917)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Takeshi_Onimaru_7875.jpg

The Big Bad of the series, Onimaru was just a student and a really skilled and no-nonsense kendoka. Eventually, Yaiba manage to humiliate him in an attempt to challenge him and eventually they become bitter rivals. Obsessed with beating Yaiba, Onimaru discovers in a secret cellar of his house the Legendary Fujin Sword, and attempt to master it, turning himself into a powerful and large Oni bent on killing Yaiba and conquering the whole World. He has displayed many powers, and has attempted many plots to Take Over the World. During the Kaguya arc he was forced to join forces with Yaiba. After getting the Devil King Sword he starts his plans of destruction by tricking the Underworld people and awakening the legendary dragon Orochi but eventually is vanquished once and for all by Yaiba who cut off his horns. He was then Put on a Bus, that came back just in time to put him as Final Boss of the Oda Nobunaga Tournament.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Was pretty full of himself even before becoming an evil, world-conquering Oni. Later he tends to be very dismissive of Yaiba.
  • Bad Ass Boast
Onimaru: "I'm no longer a human... I'm a Oni! I'm the Incarnation of Evil!!!
  • Bad Ass Cape: Long and red.
  • Bad Ass Normal: Before getting possessed. Also after his training with Kenjuuro, who made him a perfect swordsman.
  • Bad Boss: Downplayed, he ordered the execution of Gerozaemon after his failure to kill Yaiba and frequently punishes Spiderman for his blunders. He treats his Black Oni and Professor Kanabo well though.
  • Bald of Evil: Is completely bald, a fact which Yaiba often mocks when taunting him. He loses all evil connotations in the final arc, where he becomes a better person and swordsman.
  • Battle Aura: Like Yaiba above. And even him can use the Tojin attack.
  • Big Bad: Until the Orochi Arc.
  • Blow You Away: Expecially his Tornado Attack, which once drilled throught the earth surface!!
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Does his to the Japanese government members. Ironically, it's revealed that he was like this the whole time.
  • Breakable Weapons: His Fujin Sword is broken by Yaiba's Thunder-enhaced Kaminari Giri, but it's repaired later.
  • Brought Down to Normal: He's eventually freed by Fujin's influence.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Rarely, including the Fujin Ha (Wind God Wave), the Tornado attack and all the Devil King Sword attacks.
  • Casting a Shadow: Can use dark demonic powers. Later he aquires the Devil King Sword
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Even before becoming a demon, he was strong enough to crush concrete pipes with a bamboo sword. Afte Kenjuuro's training he can put all his power in a single slash, resulting in a swordstrike capable of flattening a steel armor and everything around it.
  • The Comically Serious: He mantain an overly serious behavior to Yaiba's more buffoonish, chaotic antics.
  • Cool Sword: The Fuujin Sword, even after it was repaired, and later on the Demon King Sword.
  • Demon Head: When Yaiba uses the Kincho Orb to turn into Onimaru and trick Spiderman into thinking he can call him Take-chan and he does so to the real Onimaru, the latter gets a Demon Head so powerful it protudes from the TV screen.
  • Demonic Possession: After mastering the Fujin Katana he got possessed by Fujin and become a Oni.
  • Diagonal Cut: The Iaido strike Yokoichimonji.
  • Enemy Mine: With Yaiba against Gekko and Kaguya, and that was awesome.
  • Evil Laugh: Does an epic one when he's finally possessed by Fujin and turns into a Oni.
  • Evil Overlord: A standard one after being infected by Fuujin's evil.
  • Expy: Without the horns, he looks like Tenshinhan from Dragon Ball
  • Flaming Sword: He managed to turn his bokuto into one with his ki during the final battle.
  • Final Boss: After being trained by Yaiba's father himself.
  • Four Is Death: His Four Evil Kings (Shitenno) during the third arc. Later his Four elemental Kishin.

  • Laser Blade: Eventually his Devil King Sword turns into one after going all out.
  • Last-Name Basis: He's always called Onimaru despite that being his family name (his real name being Takeshi).
  • Made of Iron: When still human he was really resilient, even after falling into a deep hole and having several balls and later iron gym tools dropped on him.
  • The Man Behind the Man: For Boss during the Underworld arc, despite the latter thinking they were allies.
  • Maou the Demon King: He openly takes the title of Onimaru Maou during the Legendary Orbs arc, with a simultaneous declaration of godhood to boot. He has the minions, the fortress and an opponent in the hero Yaiba.

  • Razor Wind: His signature attack.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue Oni to Yaiba's Red Oni
  • Rival Turned Evil: At first he was just Yaiba's bitter rival: the obsession with the humiliation suffered at his hand pushed him to master the Fujin Sword and be possessed.
  • Scary Impractical Armor: It looks cool, and doesn't put him in any disadvantage whatsoever. Lampshaded in the Chiki Chiki Grand Prix Omake where he's suffering the extreme heat of the Sahara Desert, but refuses to take off his armor, being the symbol of his evilness and all.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Both his horns and the various spikes on his armour.
  • Taken for Granite: After almost killing Kaguya he's snateched by her hair and shot with the Carbon Freeze Beam, which turns him into a petrified slab of extremely hard material. He's eventually broken out of this shell by Yaiba.
  • Tornado Move: Onimaru with his "Tornado Attack", which was powerful enough to drill his way across a generous portion of the Earth's crust and kept going for a while in outer space.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: The Japanese people aren't really worried about having a demon as leader. Okay, they attempted an Air Raid on his castle, but..
  • Villainous Valor: Even an Oni warlord, he does show traces of virtue here and ther, most notably Taking the Bullet for Yaiba himself and give him enough resolve to defeat Kaguya, as well as warning him to move out of the way before he shoots the Lightning Wind Bazooka at Gekko.
  • Worthy Opponent: Considers Yaiba this. Until the Orochi Arc, at first.

The Spiderman

voiced by: Yukimasa Kishino (pilot film), Tetsuo Sakaguchi (TV series)

The third of Onimaru's Eight Great Oni, he's an anthropomorphic spider with Kansai accent who apparently came from Osaka. It serves mainly as Onimaru's righthand man and henchman, but is quite clumsy and incompetent. He briefly sides with Yaiba during the Kaguya Arc when his master is sealed in Carbonite.

Professor Kanabo

voiced by: Hisao Egawa

A Mad scientist with awful teeth and a penchant for creating really dangerous Stuff. He's hired by Onimaru and provdes him weapons and advice. He also repaired the Fujin Sword and built the Onimaru Cannon, a Flying Submarine and the Furai Bazooka.

     Onimaru's Minions

The Eight Great Oni (Hakki)

The first Quirky Miniboss Squad, they're all demons born from animals whose statues were sealed in the Cave of Kishin.

Common Tropes:

  • Beast Man: It's implied that they're normally spirits, but they took bestial forms due to Onimaru sacrificing animals to summon them.
  • Odd Name Out: In the original, they all follow the animal + man naming (Frogman is Kaeru Otoko, for example) except the Batman, who's Batguy in the english version and actually Batman in Japanese.
  • Oni: Referred to as such, though they are not ogre-like horned demons but humanoid animals instead.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: They were sealed in the Cave of Kishin and were fred by Onimaru to act as his minions.

Snakeman Julius Zuppopotamus III

The second Hakki sent by Onimaru to kill Yaiba and Gerozaemon. Fights with the Snake-God Pike.

  • Achilles' Heel: When Yaiba accidentally slices off the tip of his tail, Snakeman finds himself unable to stand up and has to be carried away by his underling while swearing revenge. He fixes it by attaching a branch to the wound, though he feels that he won't look as threatening as he used to be.
  • Attack Backfire: Tries to lure the heroes out by setting their house ablaze. This results in them catching fire and accidentally setting him on fire as well.
  • Badass Boast: When he first blocks the Raijin Sword he claims that nothing can break through his pike.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: He first appears disguised as a beautiful woman, but Musashi tricks him into grabbing a sake cup from the open fire and points out how her hands were unsinged.
  • Diagonal Cut: He and his spear are sliced in half by Yaiba's Senpuken attack.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Snakeman true name is Julius Zuppopotamus Third. Also counts as a In-Universe Narm.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Invoked with his name, whose ominous appearence is greatly diminished when he reveals his ridicolous-sounding real name. He's still a dangerous opponent who gives Yaiba trouble.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: One of the most evil Hakki, though there's plenty of humor at his expenses.
  • Snake People: While his hooded form is seemingly humanoid, his true form is that of a massive snake with humanoid arms and torso.

Slugman Name-chan/Snailman Den-chan

The fourth Hakki, a giant monster who attacks the heroes on their route to Tokyo.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: In his slug form he's almost a Kaiju, with Yaiba being the size of his eyeball.
  • Eye on a Stalk: Uses them as giant flails to fight Yaiba.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Again, his initial monstrous appearence is defused by his ridicolous name of Name-chan (Sluggy).
  • Logical Weakness: Salt will cause him to shrink back to a minuscule size.
  • Oh, Crap!: As Snailman, he has an epic one when he realizes that the heroes have just throw him (shell and all) in a giant, simmering bowl of sukiyaki stew. Has another one when he realizes that Batguy has arrived.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Snailman is just him wearing a massive snail shell to protect himself from all harm.
  • Slippery Skid: Can spit slippery slime as part of his arsenal.
  • Spin Attack: As Snailman, he can leap in the air than spin his shell like a wheel to ram into people.

Batguy

The fifth Hakki, he's the strongest of the eight.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Has red skin, for some reason.
  • Back for the Dead: In order to bolster their defenses for the upcoming attack, Spiderman revives him with a concoction fo tomato juice, salt, pepper and sakΓ©, resulting in a revived but drunk Batguy... who's promptly taken out by Yaiba when they meet.
  • Berserk Button: Goes from playful to batshit (ah ha) insane when Yaiba slices him acroos his face and breaks his shades, going this close to actually killing him.
  • Bishōnen Line: The most humanoid of the Hakki is also the most powerful and competent one.
  • Fanboy: Of Miyamoto Musashi, to the point of begging him for a handshake and an autograph. However, rather than withdraw at his request, he instead challenges him to a duel, itching for a match against the top Japanese swordsman.
  • Gratuitous English: His name is Batguy/man and he tends to pepper his speech with english words at random, calling Yaiba "Thunder Boy" and Sayaka "Pretty Girl".
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: During the second encounter, he ends up locked in a container with the werewolf-turned hero, who proceed to bite him, forcing him to flee as they turn back to normal.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The first opponent who was actually a threat to Yaiba.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: A humanoid bat and master swordsman who's charming with the ladies and can turn people he bites... into werewolves, much to his confusion. His victims can return back to normal by biting him. He's also vulnerable to sunlight and is introduced sleeping in a coffin.
  • Precision F-Strike: He actually mutters "Goddamn!" when he's cut down by Yaiba.
  • Royal Rapier: Wields a classy rapier with class and style, with a very fast but precise swordstyle. Fittingly, he's the most westernized of the Oni.
  • Weakened by the Light: Without his sunglasses he will recoil in pain from light exposure, which Yaiba exploits to defeat him.
  • Winged Humanoid: Rather than being a humanoid bat, he's mostly humanoid with red skin, prehensile feet and black batwings.

Starfishman

The seventh Hakki, one of the weakling trio with Seacucumberman and Mantisman.

  • Adaptational Badass: In the anime, he and Mantisman actually fought the heroes briefly.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has very massive black eyebrows as his most prominent facial features.
  • Disney Death: Is scorched by a spray of lava while recovering the Fire Orb from Mount Aso, leaving him in a dried up, dying state... but he immediately recovers after Yaiba spill water on him, reviving him.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: His and his colleague's attempted attack on Yaiba is derailed by a naked Sayaka.
  • Happily Married: With a Starfishwoman called Miporin. They also have a child together and are a very happy, loving couple.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Nearly burns to death while recovering the Fire Orb.
  • Oh, Crap!: When the heroes tell him that they need a guy for Mt. Aso he's more than happy to assist them... only to freeze in fear when he hears that they're going to challenge Onimaru.
  • Spectacular Spinning: His special attack allows him to spin midair to fly and attack at the same time.

Mantisman

The last Hakki, one of the weakling trio with Seacucumberman and Starfishman.

  • Adaptational Badass: He actually fights Yaiba in the anime, showing that his claws aren't for show.
  • Slaying Mantis: Unlike the other two Hakki, he looked like a threat... but he ultimately wasn't.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After the Tottori Arc, he decides to return to Nagoya and is never seen since.

Onimaru's Four Evil Kings (Shitenno)

voiced by: Kazumi Tanaka (Chameleon Bonaparte), Tesshō Genda (Dry Dry), Fumihiko Tachiki (Yakitori)

The Four Guardians of Onimaru's castle, they are Yakitori (a giant anglerfish), Chameleon Bonaparte (a french-speaking chameleon), Supergorilla/Dry Dry (a tiny but super powerful gorilla) and Tortoise Europa, a giant mecha turtle piloted by Spiderman.

  • Adaptation Expansion: In the manga, Bonaparte tries to make his escape after being discovered, only to be impaled through the tongue by Kojiro and finished off by Yaiba. In the anime he plays once again the doppelganger trick using Sayaka and later flees to activate a trap on the party.
  • Affably Evil: Yakitori, before getting angry, is very kind and softspoken.
  • Berserk Button: Don't call Yakitori Toadstool... or steal his paper lantern.
  • Delicious Distraction: Subverted when Bonaparte sees a bunch of fruit hanging from a thread and calls the heroes fools for thinking they can lure him out with such methods... only for Yaiba to dangle a butterfly in front of him, which works perfectly.
  • Flying Brick: Being a parody of the Man of Steel, Dry Dry is extremely powerful and fast, despite being the size of a toy.
  • Four Is Death: They are four an each is deadlier than the last.
  • Hollywood Chameleons: Chameleon Bonaparte, the second Shitenno, can downright become invisible and even take the form of another person.
  • Humongous Mecha: The last evil King is actually a Mecha Turtle run on by the Spiderman.
  • Killer Rabbit: Dry Dry the Supergorilla is tiny, but super strong!
  • MacGuffin Guardian: Guarding places and rooms rather then a specific item.
  • Made of Iron: Dry Dry again, who had a wall tossed on him and survived.
  • One-Winged Angel: Sort of: After Super Gorilla is defeated, he turn back to normal.... that means a giant, strong and rampaging gorilla. Thankfully, Yaiba manage to tame it.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: Chamaleon Bonaparte, who use the tongue to engage in a duel with Gerozaemon.
  • Tap on the Head: Dry Dry is taken out when Kojiro accidentally slams in in the back of the head with his sword while trying to slash at the heroes.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Bonaparte can do this.
  • Wronski Feint: Yaiba defeats Yakitori by tricking him into slamming through the walls of his room.

The Seven Revived Swordsmen

The warriors from the past summoned by Onimaru in order to kill Yaiba, they include:

Common Tropes:

  • Historical Domain Character: All of them are famous figures of the past.
  • One-Winged Angel: Like the Hakki, they were reborn through animals. Unlike the Hakki, they normally look human, but can revert to a beast man form when they have to get serious.
  • Ninja: Three out of the seven are ninja, the others include a sorcerer, two warrior monks and a ronin.

Miyoshi Seikai

A warrior monk and one of the Sanada Ten Braves, he was reborn in the body of an octopus. Fights the hero at Lake Biwa.

  • Bald of Evil: Make sense, since he was a buddhist monk in life, though a violent and brutal one.
  • Blank White Eyes: In his human form, though oddly he regains pupils when he transforms into a giant octopus.
  • Combat Tentacles: Gains huge tentacles he uses to restrain Yaiba and slap him until he surrenders. At one point he uses two of them to take his sword away.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In the anime, he appears (in octopus form) during the opening.
  • Giant Squid: His battle form is that of an humongous red octopus.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When first revived, he laughs at Onimaru's request and points his staff at him, but a subtle threat makes him realize that the man is a worthy master and he relents.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Subverted, his attempt to crush Yaiba under a boulder ends up giving him the Suijin Orb... but Yaiba can't use it against him.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Seikai Miyoshi has no quirks nor time for jokes: he immediately attacks until he's defeated for good.
  • Pun: Buddhist monks are often associated to octopi because of their bald heads. He's a monk who can turn into an octopus.
  • Riddle for the Ages: He seems to hold a grudge against Musashi from some reason, but we never learn why.

Fuuma Kotaro

Fifth head of the Fuuma Ninja Clan, reborn in the body of a hawk. He confronts Yaiba in Shikoku and later somewhere near Osaka.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: He's tricked by his fellow Goemon and cut down just to allow him to gain the heroes' trust. His reaction implies that he really didn't saw that coming.
  • Car Fu: In his last appearence, he uses a ninjutsu to rise some cars in the air and drops them on Yaiba's group.
  • Elemental Powers: Using ninjutsu in combat he can cast Razor Wind, rings of flame or even call forth lightning bolts.
  • Epic Flail: He uses a kusarigama with a massive cilindric weight to attack Yaiba and electrocute him with the Fuuma Ninpo: Lightning Fall.
  • Knight of Cerebus: One of the strongest opponents, he almost won against Yaiba, failing only because he was attacked by the Tanuki.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Kotaro's name literally means "Little Kid". The guy himself is a giant of a man, well-muscled and dangerous.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: He's cut in half by "Rokuemon Ishida".
  • Hand Seals: Kotaro Fuuma uses a correct Ku-ji spell against Yaiba, complete with the incantation "Rin Hyo To Sha Kai Jin Retsu Sai Zen". In the Spanish dub he simply counts from one to ten.
  • Large and in Charge: Kotaro was the fifth leader of the Fuuma clan and he's quite a giant of a man.
  • Ninja: One who looks the part, is very stealthy and employs deceit and jutsu in combat.
  • Ninja Log: He can use the Kawarimi no Jutsu to switch places with a log when seemingly hit.
  • Stock Ninja Weaponry: He has an entire arsenal, including a ninjato, kunai, tanto, shuriken and a massive kusarigama.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: He often applies explosives to his throwing weapons, making them lethal even if dodged or blocked.
  • Tengu: When he transforms he becomes a hawkman, making his moniker of Fuuma (Wind Devil) strike closer to home.
  • The Worf Effect: He's quickly killed off by Goemon as part of his Engineered Heroics ploy.

Amakusa Shiro

Christian rebel and practictioner of sorcery, reborn in the body of a fox. He attacks Yaiba during his trip to Kyushu.

  • Adaptational Badass: The anime cuts out his most embarassing moments, making him look more competent and serious.
  • Asian Fox Spirit: He's reborn as a fox and, like the mythical kitsune, can transform into many shapes, with his whiskers and ears being the giveaway sign. His One-Winged Angel though is that of a massive weasel-like monster.
  • Badass Boast: Played for laughs in the manga: as he spies the heroes entering Mt Aso, he claims that they may have escaped the innkeeper, but they won't escape him. Spiderman immediately points out that it's not much of a claim.
  • Demon Head: After spending the entire night summoning gods fruitlessly to know the location of the Legendary Orb, he finds out that the owner of the inn they hired to keep Yaiba and co busy knew about the orb all along. He promptly yells at him with an enlarged, Super-Deformed head across the TV screen.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Tries to trick Yaiba in turning into a bean to eat him... but he still has the Raijin Sword, which he used to poke and slash at his stomach from the inside, forcing him to spit him out.
  • Evil Sorcerer: This version of Shiro can use the Amakusa Ryu Sorcery to transform himself into many shapes or other things, like his hair into a spear, feathers into ravens and silk threads into snakes.
  • Kill It with Fire: He ends up burned alive by Yaiba's latest orb.
  • Made of Iron: He duels Yaiba for a while in the middle of an erupting volcano and later on the lavic rocks spit out by the eruption.
  • Oh, Crap!: He freezes up for a moment when Yaiba's Kaminarigiri slashes his spear into pieces.
  • RaijΕ«: His final form resembles a classical description of a Raiju, being a giant weasel-like monster with massive claws and six tails.
  • Red Right Hand: In all his forms he has fox ears and whiskers, while he occasionally forgets about his tail as well.
  • Shapeshifter Showdown: When Yaiba tries to fight him with the Kincho Orb, the battle goes down with a series of increasingly more grotesque transformations (including Cobra vs Mongoose and Space Shuttle vs UFO).
  • Summon Magic: In the manga, he uses a ritual to summon Shinto Gods to learn where the Orb is... except that, either because of genuine ignorance or Obfuscating Stupidity, none of them can answer his question.
  • Too Important to Walk: On the way to Aso, he forces Spiderman's minions to carry him on a palanquin.
  • Visual Pun: His transformation battle with Yaiba features a galore of puns based on old idioms.

Ishikawa Goemon

Master thief and ninja, reborn in the body of a bear. He's one of the sturdiest opponents, facing Yaiba in Osaka, Nara and Niigata.

  • Acrofatic: Despite his girth, he has the speed and mobility of a ninja.
  • Afro Asskicker: His topknot is shaped like a bushy afro and makes his head look even larger.
  • Bears Are Bad News: When going all out he turns into a massive humanoid bear with a steel armor, giant shuriken and bladed Sais.
  • Dub Name Change: In the Spanish dub, rather than keep his name, he's called "Rocko the Barbarian" (with his alias Rokuemon being renamed Rocki instead).
  • Engineered Heroics: Under the disguise of Rokuemon Ishida he begs Yaiba to let him join their group and showcases his strength by killing Kotaro Fuuma in one blow... except that Kotaro though he was on his side.
  • Flunky Boss: In Kawanakajima, he uses his ninja minions to keep Yaiba occupied so that he can aim and throw his shuriken at him.
  • Funny Bruce Lee Noises: While piloting the Onimaru Osaka Castle, he breaks out with kung fu noises as he uses a train as a nunchaku set.
  • Fuuma Shuriken: As a bearman, he uses two oversized shurikens to attack Yaiba from afar.
  • Guyliner: Wears kabuki makeup on his face, which turns into Facial Markings when in bear form.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Yaiba jumps on one of his shurikens and rides it back to him to gain enough strength to stab the sword into his armor and shot the fireball at point blank.
  • Hostage Situation: In Nara he kidnaps Sayaka, using her as a bargaigning chip to make Yaiba surrender his sword and orbs.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Has the mannerism of a kabuki actos and wears a garish overcoat on his ninja robes.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Some of his weapons include his oversized pipe and a steel umbrella used to repeal Yaiba's fireballs.

  • Kick the Dog: During the battle of Kawanakajima he gets on Yaiba's bad side by callously attack Sayaka, claiming that a woman shouldn't stick her nose in a battle of men.

  • Let's Get Dangerous!: He decides to transform into his bear form after being set ablaze by Yaiba.
  • Multi-Melee Master: He can fight with a customized katana, as well as with kunai, kiseru, iron parasol, giant shurikens and bladed sai.

  • Running Gag: People commenting on the size of his head. Even himself.
  • Sue Donym: He goes under the fake identity of Rokuemon Ishida, with Roku being 6 to Go's 5 and Ishida being one kanji different from Ishikawa (the former means Stone Paddle, the latter Stone River).
  • Verbal Tic: Goemon's :" If you excuse me..."
  • Villainous Valor: His only redeeming factor is his love for animal, to the point that he'd rather run away from a bunch of deers rather than harm them.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Calls Yaiba out when the Giant Buddha he's riding attacks the Onimaru Castle despite Sayaka being hostage. Unfortunately, Yaiba has no control on the statue's actions.

Musashibo Benkei

Legendary Yamabushi and sword collector, reborn in the body of a bull. He was looking for the Legendary Orbs in Hokkaido and fights the group in Sapporo.

  • Anachronism Stew: He's the oldest of the seven revived swordsmen, but seems to have a surprisingly good grasp on baseball.
  • Batter Up!: While his weapon is a kanabo, a real life mace, he uses it like a baseball bat to match his outfit and fighting style.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's not very bright, as he planned to seek for the Hokkaido Orb by mugging anyone walking on the Ushiwaka Bridge and ask balls out of them. While he did found the Orb by accident, he's easily tricked by Musashi into believing that a kendama was the real deal, and only when he overhears Sayaka calling Musashi by name he puts two and two together.
  • Four Is Death: His baseball uniform carries the number 444 on it.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Revealed when Yaiba manages to use the Kazaguruma to avoid his strike and cut his pants.

Basho Matsuo

Famous master poet, in truth a ruthless Iga ninja with an agends, reborn in the body of a macaque. He fights the group in Northern Japan.

  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Basho Matsuo was a fierce ninja disguised as poet who wanted to Take Over the World with Ryujin Orb.

  • Dub Name Change: In the Spanish dub he's called "Chi Pan".

  • Knight of Cerebus: An extremely serious and dangerous villain, as well as surprisingly creepy and viler than many other bad guys.

  • Maniac Monkeys: His transformed form is that of a macaque, but he's one of the worst villains.
  • Taken for Granite: His specialty are a set of needles that can turn anyone they hit into stone: he enjoys watching people as they turn into statues and even sadistically asks Yaiba how does it feel. Fortunately, snapping the needles will turn the person back to normal even if the statue was broken.
  • Slasher Smile: Sports a creepy one half-hidden by his massive moustache when he asks Yaiba how does it feel to turn to stone.
  • Sinister Scythe: His weapon of choice is a large scythe with an Haiku written on the handle. In the anime he can spin it with enough strength to deflect the attacks from the Water Orb and Ice Orb.
  • The Starscream: He plans to take the Ryujin Orb for himself and challenge Onimaru for the control of Japan.
  • Visionary Villain: He dreams of conquering the world, which made him rebel against Onimaru. Unfortunately, it also makes him a victim to the Darkness Orb.
  • Warrior Poet: While he's actually a ninja, he still makes haiku and quotes some of his famous haiku from time to time.

Onimaru's Demon Gods

The last group of Onimaru's servants and probably the strongest of them all. It's composed of four demons referred to as the Kishins (Demon Gods) with elemental powers and magical swords. At first they're a bit of a Giant Space Flea From No Where

  • And I Must Scream: Dark's Dark Pyramid: Delta Zone attack can send any hit opponent into another dimension forever.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Rain's longsword can stretch itself and pass through any substance, cutting only flesh. Seems cool? Try to use it to parry an incoming sword strike....
  • BFS: Their swords are Tachi (Longsword), and they tend to be quite long and broad
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: Unlike the other demons, Plasma has two blades on his forearms, that look like the "wings" of a Manta Ray.
  • Boss in Mook Clothing: Dark before revealing himself as The Dragon, was disguised as a Black Oni.
  • Casting a Shadow: Dark has total control of the Darkness and can use it in many ways.
  • Cool Sword: Rain has the Water Demon Longsword, which manipulates water and can phase through unorganic matter to sever flesh, Burner has the fiery Fire Demon Lonsword and Dark fights with an unnamed but slick-looking falchion which can use to cast his Dark Tunnel.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Dark's Super Delta Zone is said to exhaust 80% of his stamina and life energy.
  • Dark Action Girl: Rain is the sole woman but she came dangerously close to killing Yaiba in combat.
  • Elemental Hair Composition: Rain has water as hair, to match his Making a Splash powers.
  • Elemental Powers: Each of them, namely Water, Fire, Darkness and Light.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Yaiba managed to beat Rain by using the wind to wash away all the water in the battlefield, but she just make more of it out of her sword. Also Sayaka tries this while wielding the Water Demon Longsword against Burner, but it's not enough.
    • Furthermore, Yaiba manage to escape Dark's Dark Zone by shattering it with the light of his sword. And also Plasma, whose illusions are stopped as Yaiba use the Supreme King Sword to cover the sky with dark clouds.
  • Fireballs: Burner's main tactic consist in tossing a large number of these at his target. Or a single big one.
  • Flaming Hair: Burner, of course, while Rain sports a curious case of "'Watering Hair". Dark, meanwhile, has ordinary hair.
  • Flaming Sword: The Fire Demon Longsword can engulf itself in flames and burn down to ashes everything it touches, even the other swords and their wielder.
  • Gravity Master: Sort of. Dark's Dark Zone attack can suck inside the shadow projected by his sword everyone standing on it.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Dark falls victim of his own Delta Zone and Plasma has his thunder ray sent back to him.
  • Kill It with Fire: Burner attacks with fire and his longsword is engulfed in flames which will spread across any weapon touching it.
  • Kill It with Water: Rain, whose powers allow her to create huge water drills, spears and needles made of ice or simply blast huge water bullets from her sword.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Rain, who despite being the starter villain for that arc manages to be more dangerous than many previously seen enemies.
  • Light Is Not Good: The last demon, Plasma.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Dark is quite fast, and Plasma is simply a champion at it... well, being the Light Demon and all...
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Burner's large shield can also spit a stream of fire.
  • Making a Splash: Rain and her Sword.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Dark wears a creepy mask and his face is always concealed.
  • Master of Illusion: Plasma can turn himself into anyone and cast powerful illusions manipulating the light in the enviroment.
  • Meaningful Name: All of them.
  • The Mole: Plasma makes his debut using his powers to take the appearence of Kojiro and backstab Yaiba at a critical moment.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: None of them have lighthearted moments and even chapter covers featuring them (which are usually more whimsical) portray them seriously.
  • Noble Demon: Burner is not as ruthless as his collegues. Still this diesn't stop him from demolishing Sayaka's mansion with his Fire Balls attacks
  • One-Hit Kill: The previously mentioned Delta Zone
  • Playing with Fire: Burner and his Falchion.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Burner and Rain, almost literally. While both are pretty calm, Burner uses more straightforward tactics and direct combat, while Rain mostly employs her elemental powers over water.
  • Self-Duplication: Burner is capable of this, using fire clones.
  • Shock and Awe: Plasma can use any "light" source to recharge himself and attack, including Lightnings, which later toss at Yaiba.
  • Water Is Womanly: Rain is the only woman as well as the Water Demon of the Demon Gods.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Dark to a defeated Burner, as he was about to reveal the location of Onimaru as promised.

  • Villainous Breakdown: Snaps during the final confrontation as she starts growing older and older while the heroes are busy saving Sayaka.
  • Villainous Valor: While she is cruel and cold towards mankind and most of her subjects, she deeply loves the Earth, and makes sure Tsukikage gets the best healing they can muster after he took a fireball for her.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Even when removed from a host, she can assume the form of a humanoid light bunny or her human "sealed" form at will.

     The Pyramid Guardians

The Third-Class Soldiers

  • Ki Manipulation: Budou can shoot purple "grapefruit-like" Ki Blasts
  • Mega Manning: Sort of: Mushroom Soldier can pick up and use the Raijin Sword because his masters built him with this ability. Considering that one of his makers may be Onimaru, who possessed the Fujin Sword, another demon katana, it's quite Fridge Brilliance.

  • Sinister Scimitar: The Mushroom Soldier.
  • Stock Wushu Weapons: To fit his "chinese martial artist" looks, Budou wields a pair of hooked claws on his hands.

Unnamed Samurai

The first fighter met by Yaiba, is a stern looking samurai who uses a peculiar sword style involving water. Despite having no name, he serves to prove how hard this tournament will be.

  • Determinator: This guy had an amazing iron will, even after being hit several times in vital points..
  • Home Field Advantage: What a coincidence that a samurai whose style involves using water to mask his attacks gets to fight in a shallow pool.
  • Kill It with Water: His Suishin Ittoryu (Water God One Sword Style) uses a combination of swordmastery and water.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Yaiba had to deliver one on him to stop him. And he felt terrible.
  • No Name Given: The poor guy doesn't even get a name or anything.
  • Samurai: Wears the clothes and bears the katana of a typical samurai, as well as using an ancient sword style. He's also very iron-willed.

Frederick Luther III

A European Knight, and Yaiba's second opponent. Despite his noble and proud appearence, he's a slimy, dirty cheater who's not above using vile tricks to win the Tournament and 10% of the final prize which amounts to 100000 millions Yen.

Gozuma

A mighty warrior whose body was powered up thanks to "microunits" which turns him in a restless, powerful fighter who feels no pain and can increase his speed and strength as he fights. He's the champion of the Platina leader Gakuso Shirogane and fights Yaiba in an electrified ring.

  • Artificial Human: Partially averted, he's fully human with "microunits" planted in his muscles.
  • BFS: His weapon of choice is a very large scimitar.
  • Calling Your Attacks: "NIAGARA CRUSHER!!"
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Gakuso orders him to absorb more and more energy from the elettrified barrier, causing him to overload and frying all his microunits.

  • Double Weapon: He's seen wielding a sort of double dagger-like weapon.
  • Expy: He looks like his counterpart in Samurai Shodown.
  • Fanservice: Not the sexual one, but considering that so many other "famous warriors" have appeared, his cameo can count as this for the nippophilies.
  • Playing with Fire: He's shown spewing fire at his opponent

Soshi Okita

Sixth descendant of the legendary Shinsengumi ''Kensei'', he's a young and powerful swordsmaster. Extremely good-natured and kind, is also a fearsome opponent with an amazing skill. Wields the famed Kikuichimonji katana.

  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He is likely the most talented swordsman in the series (which is saying something), and is able to almost beat Yaiba despite not being as experienced as the former. However, he is not particularly interested in swordsmanship, and only wants to win the tournament so that he can quit kendo.
  • Cool Sword: His precious katana, which covers:
    • Ancestral Weapon: The sword of his famous ancestor and still and Absurdly Sharp Blade
    • BFS: It looks quite big compared to him.
    • Named Weapons: Kiku Ichimonji (θŠδΈ€ζ–‡ε—) alias: Chrysanthemum Crest.
    • Sword Beam: His ultimate attack allows him to send a wave of bright energy from the ground as a sort of counter attack.
  • Counter-Attack: Apparently he's just parrying blows with the hilt of his sword. In reality, he's parrying and hitting back with such a speed that Musashi can tell it only from Yaiba's wounds.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: An interesting variation: physically, he totally owned Yaiba, but Yaiba's tenacity totally caught him by surprise and pushed him to withdraw.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: For this reason he lacks a strong spirit like Yaiba.
  • I Let You Win: After noticing that Yaiba's assaults grow stronger and stronger as he gets up and surprised by the Toujin technique, he decides to forfeit the match. Also done in order to avoid to kill Yaiba of course.
  • Kid Samurai: He's slightly older than Yaiba himself.
  • Master Swordsman: One of the greatest ever shown.
  • Nice Guy: Also one of the nicest guys in the whole manga.
  • Oh, Crap!: Despite his superior skills, he's often surprised and caught off-guard, expecially when Yaiba manages to unclock the Tojin (Battle Blades) attack on him.
  • Reverse Grip: The stance for his strongest attack, followed by a full circle movement and a bit of Sword Drag.

Nadeshiko Yamato

A beautiful lady-warrior who appeared in a really short filler story. She wants to marry Yaiba and she's ready to fight for Mine's Dojo. It's revealed that it was a huge misunderstanding...

  • Accidental Marriage: When she was younger, Yaiba saved her from a leopard and she fell in love with him and asked if she could "Cook for Him". Yaiba accepted. (Granted, he thought she was a chef).
  • Designated Girl Fight: With Sayaka, but only because she had already beat the crap out of Kojiro and Musashi. No, no Fanservice for you.
