    Doug Houser

Doug Houser

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doug_houser_render.png
I'm not a religious man, but if there is an afterlife, I know what's waiting for me when my time is up. I accept it and I deserve it. Just give me one last chance to right my biggest wrong before I go. I'm not sure that's even possible, but I'd pay any price to find out.

The main protagonist of the series. A defense attorney who seeks redemption for a dark past.

  • Abusive Parent: Doug wasn't a very loving father to his daughter Tammy, calling her "a defective child" for being autistic and inheriting her mother's bipolar disorder. Some secret documents in Bearly Buried indicate that Doug's mother was also this to her son, who too saw Doug as nothing but a burden and reminder of her horrible husband. Doug's wife also notes that Doug does not want to visit her again when the question is brought up.
  • Accidental Murder: When the car accident that had his wife and daughter killed was brought up, Doug claims that Elise wasn't supposed to drive on that fateful day. According to the documents, Doug switched his wife's bipolar medication with sleeping pills in an attempt to frame her death as a suicide by overdosing on her pills. However, she left to go pick up their daughter, Tammy, and the pills took effect while she was driving. Elise fell asleep behind the wheel, drove off a bridge, and both she and Tammy drowned.
  • Amoral Attorney: He's a former criminal defense attorney of a high-profile, and revealed to be an abusive dad who felt trapped in family life with a bi-polar wife and autistic daughter.
  • Anti-Hero: By his admission, he deserves to be in Hell for what he did to his family and he admits that he won't rest until he finds a way to resurrect his family before going there.
  • Astral Projection: He's dying in a hospital bed somewhere in the real world. In his desperation to make up for his crimes, he painted a rune of Black Magic onto his pillow that's projecting his soul (which resembles a younger, healthier of his current self) into the Nightmare realm so he can search it for a solution.
  • The Atoner: It's his goal. He's so desperate to save his daughter that, rather than peacefully die in a hospital bed, he chose to project his soul into the Dark Dimension in the slim hope of using its powers to alter history.
  • Aura Vision: "Telepathy" allows him to see an enemy's fog-like aura through any obstructions and walls. It's especially useful to distinguish the real Dread Duckies from the fake ones in "Stranger Sewers".
  • Badass Bookworm: He was a former high-profile criminal defense attorney, and shows to be very clever in slipping past the enemies in the nightmare stages.
  • Brought Down to Normal: After Malak delves into the darkest memories of his mind, he marks Doug's mind to get to Bierce in her pocket dimension, and later taken to be executed by Mama Bear and her Trigger Teddies but manages to escape thanks to an unknown spirit, Doug ended up losing all of the abilities he acquired up to that point. Getting them back is required to truly escape the nightmare stage.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Suffered enough trauma in his life to have 10 whole Nightmare levels to complete.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: He was already capable of completing "Monkey Business" (i.e. the first level) with only his wits, a Data Pad that displays the layout of the area, and lots of sprinting. Then Bierce allows him to gain powers through the Ring Altar in the Ballroom. Though, as Malak proves at the end of Mascot Mayhem, he is still a mortal, and isn’t invincible to getting the crap beat out of him by the Joy Joy Gang.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: His parents were as kind and tactful with him as he was to Clarisse and Tammy, though (unlike Bierce) he's well aware it's not a justification for his crimes.
  • Featureless Protagonist: In the main game, we never see what Doug looks like nor do we hear his voice, though he does get a model in Monsters & Mortals, averting this trope. Further averted when Malak invades the ballroom, where a weakened Doug is shown lying on the floor in the background.
  • Flash Step: Through the use of "Teleportation", allowing him to move past enemies and traps when cornered, but can't be used to move past walls and doors.
  • Heroic Mime: We never hear him say a word, although at the end of Mascot Mayhem and throughout Bearly Buried, he does "speak" with on-screen text.
  • Hour of Power: His newly acquired powers can only last for a limited amount of time or be used once, and have to recharge to be used again, all the more to encourage players to use them strategically in critical moments.
  • Jerkass: Before his current situation, Doug wasn't the most pleasant person. Killing his wife and daughter in a car accident to run off with a secretary is probably not the kindest thing a man can do, now, is it?
  • Killing Intent: Using "Primal Fear" can allow him to stun all enemies in the direct vicinity, making it ideal to deal with large groups of them.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Journals in "Bearly Buried" reveal that Doug inherited his father's adultering ways and his mother's Resentful Guardian tendencies.
  • Miles to Go Before I Sleep: His ultimate goal is to resurrect his wife and daughter by either changing their fate or by rescuing them from the depths of the afterlife. Once he does that, Doug admits that he will go to Hell a happy man because he knows that he deserves his fate.
  • Nerves of Steel: He's capable of keeping his composure when dealing with his worst fears throughout the Nightmare levels.
  • Non-Action Guy: Zig-Zagged. While he does gain more powers through the completion of each Nightmare level, none of them are capable of doing any harm to the enemies, and he doesn't usually fight them head-on and mostly relies on his wits to outsmart and outmaneuver them. In the boss battle of the "Crazy Carnevil" however, he will take on hordes of Clown Gremlins and the four Goliath Clowns with a hammer if needed, and "Torment Therapy" ends with an extended fight against The Matron and her Reaper Nurses and a sequence where he fights his way past a group of Reaper Nurses with quick spell-work.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: He considered his wife a "psycho" due to her bipolar disorder and called his daughter "defective" due to her autism. Possibly downplayed as the entire game is about him being The Atoner and it’s possible these views are one of the things from his life he regrets, but it isn't made clear.
  • Resentful Guardian: Both his wife and daughter were diagnosed as bipolar and Doug felt trapped in this relationship because of their conditions affecting their mood around him.
  • Sleeping with the Boss: As Doug's forcefully extracted memories show, he had an affair with a Sexy Secretary that was concerned about how they would deal with Doug's wife, Clarisse.
  • Speed Blitz: Through the use of the "Speed Boost", he can outmaneuver faster enemies and ram through red barriers for a limited time.
  • The Stoic: Aside from the apparent lack of voice acting for the character, he doesn't talk much In-Universe, and is quite reserved compared to Bierce and Malak's constant quarreling. Though when Malak invades his mind, he starts breaking down, pleading with Malak to stop before he digs too deep, bringing up his worst memories.
  • Why Couldn't You Be Different?: This was what he thought of both his bipolar wife, Clarisse, and his autistic daughter, Tammy, which greatly strained their relationships.

    Helen Bierce

Helen Bierce

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bierce_0_6.png
He's right. I am getting more powerful. Powerful enough to fulfill your every wish. That's why you're here, isn't it?
Voiced by: Carolyn Seymour

A former movie star who cut a deal with Malak to get her big break, she promises to Doug that she can make his deepest wishes come true in exchange for hunting down the pieces of a magic ring scattered throughout the Dark Dimension.

  • Arch-Enemy: To Malak, who has been trying to claim her soul for nearly a century, forcing her to trap herself in her pocket dimension for all of this time. The feeling is very much mutual.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Bierce was married in the past and it's implied that it wasn't a happy one. Bierce only married him for his money, while Edgar only married her because of her looks. As shown by Mascot Mayhem, where she refers to her ex-husband as a pig when she first meets Hangry the Pig.
  • Bad Boss: Before her Faustian Rebellion anyway. Not a lot of maids would appreciate their boss sacrificing their daughters to a demon.
  • Beware the Mind Reader: She claims that she knows everything that the protagonist's got "hidden in that brain of [his]" and she's not a very trustworthy person. She can also see everything the protagonist sees.
  • Create Your Own Villain: In life, she used Agatha as a sacrifice for Malak and killed her to achieve fame and fortune. While she enjoyed the stardom, she now seemingly regrets her decision and Agatha is not in a forgiving mood. In Mascot Mayhem, the first thing Agatha does when she gets back is attack Bierce for condemning her to Hell all those years ago, subjecting her to some Laser-Guided Karma.
  • Dark Is Evil: Wears a black dress and is also a murderous user of black magic.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Many of Bierce's lines when the player loses a life are jokes at their expense. Especially if they die in a trap.
Bierce: Now THAT deserves a facepalm.
  • Deal with the Devil: Bierce made one with Malak to become a famous movie star.
  • Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?: It's revealed that she pulled a fast one on Malak a century ago.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Malak might be a Big Red Devil out to kill the protagonist, but Bierce is no saint if her past is any indication.
  • Game-Over Man: "You are dead. Hahahahahahah!"
  • Gemstone Assault: She is shown to be able to telekinetically manipulate a few soul shards and use them like throwing knives. She best demonstrates this power during her fight against Malak in her ballroom.
  • Gold Digger: Her reason for marrying her husband Edgar in the first place was because he was wealthy. She even poisons him slowly when she doesn't need him anymore.
  • Hot Witch: She's a magic-user and is trying to help Doug save his family. Hot doesn't even begin to describe Bierce, her tight leather dress leaves little to the imagination and there are a lot of flattering angles of her chest.
  • Immortality Begins at Twenty: In her diaries, Bierce mentions RKO Pictures, a studio that opened in 1928 and closed down in 1959, and she had a screen test alongside James Cagney, whose most famous roles as an actor were in the 1930s and 1940s. This indicates that Bierce, while she was still a mortal, lived in that period, yet secret files found within Stranger Sewers indicate that our protagonist had a daughter who was alive in 1988, proving that the present game takes place during or after that year. It seems as though her current immortal status means she also hasn't aged much since that time.
  • Lack of Empathy: She doesn't offer much sympathy for Doug if he bites it in the levels, often mocking or chastising him for his failure. She also thinks of Agatha as a brat and mutually hates her. Considering what she did to Agatha...
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: She does this at the beginning of "Crazy Carnevil".
"Now children just sit around and... what? Watch other people play video games?"
    • At the start of "Monkey Business" when the player is in the hotel lobby, she asks if it brings back any memories. If you played the 2014 demo version of the game, in which this was the only playable level, then it definitely should bring back some memories.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: She murdered a child in exchange for fame and fortune, but she's still a more trustworthy ally to Doug than Malak.
  • Meaningful Name: Ambrose Bierce was an American short story writer and Civil War veteran who wrote The Devil's Dictionary. Fitting that Bierce's name comes from him, as a woman who delved into black magic and made a deal with Malak. Her original name, "Helen Bierce", also came from Ambrose's daughter, who was her namesake.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Long hair, tight dress, a flattering cleavage window that looks like it's being held together by a single button, and plenty of camera angles that show off her figure.
  • Mysterious Purple: She wears some purple soul shards as jewelry on her dress and is a mysterious character with ambiguous motives.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her dress has a plunging neckline that just barely reaches her midsection.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Drops her Deadpan Snarker attitude if Doug gets killed by Malak.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Subtly implied this when Doug used Telepathy for the first time.
"Just don't let me catch you trying to see through anything else besides walls...".
  • Statuesque Stunner: Bierce stands at a very tall height, which adds to her fey beauty.
  • Tsundere: A platonic example; Bierce grows friendlier to Doug as he collects more ring pieces, but still makes fun of him from time to time. Hell, she is both shocked and relieved that Doug managed to escape alive and brought back all the ring pieces, including the new one he got from Bearly Buried.
  • Unreliable Expositor: She doesn't tell the whole truth about why she's in the underworld and why she wants to help Doug. In Bearly Buried, she confirms and admits that she's trying to back out of a deal with Malak and that she was responsible for Agatha's place in Hell.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Her voice is more panicked and she noticeably drops her snark for more serious reprimanding of the player when Malak shows up in her pocket dimension.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Bierce has white hair, and she was willing to kill a little girl to get what she wanted. She also slowly poisoned her husband Edgar with arsenic over six months when she didn't need him anymore.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: According to her eighth audio diary, she's deathly afraid of spiders and rats. …And her ex-husband in a diaper.
Bierce: The demon knows my deepest fears and is using them against me.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She killed Agatha as a sacrifice to summon Malak.

    Malak

Malak

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/malakrender_4.png
"You've been meddling in my affairs all this time, but I am no ordinary demon. Over countless millennia. I have grown my army and my power with the rivals that I have vanquished and the mortal souls that I have acquired. You could say business has been booming."
Phantom Form
Door Form

Voiced by: Christopher Corey Smith

The main antagonist of the game. A demon who has a history with Bierce, claiming to want to "collect what is owed" from her.

  • Arch-Enemy: To Bierce, who has spent the last century making a mockery of his name by trying to weasel her way out of her end of their bargain.
  • Bald of Evil: He has no hair on his scalp and he's the main threat that Doug has to face.
  • Benevolent Boss: Surprisingly, so far. We haven't heard what he says about them when Bierce and the protagonist aren't around, but he seems to have decent opinions about his minions. Agatha seems to revere him as a father figure, is respected by the Reaper Nurses despite their hatred of men, refers to the Doom Ducky as "my loyal pet", and doesn't seem to hold the monsters' inability to kill the protagonist against them. In contrast, Bierce snarks at and insults the protagonist constantly.
    • Subverted in "Bearly Buried". He starts amicably with Mama Bear and then starts losing his temper when the player, once again, escapes. To be fair to Malak, Doug is completely depowered at this point and has Malak surveying him through his mind. One would think he'd be easier to kill by now.
    • Subverted once again when one of the Q&As revealed that in spite of Agatha's reverence for him, Malak views Agatha as more of a valuable pawn than a possible daughter.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Does not like Doug using the ring's abilities.
      Malak: Those are MY powers!
    • Backing out of his deals is a big one. Bierce backing out of the one she made with him is what started this mess.
  • Big Bad: Is the primary enemy to Bierce and the protagonist, and all of the nightmares seem to be under his command.
  • Big Red Devil: One of his forms is simply a demonic figure in a suit.
  • Black Cloak: He wears one in his phantom form.
  • Contractual Boss Immunity: Immune to the effects of the Revealing and Stunning special shards, as well as the Primal Fear ability.
  • Dark Is Evil: Seems to be pretty much this game's version of the devil.
  • Deal with the Devil: Malak has made himself a "profitable business", making deals with mortals in exchange for their souls, adding their power to his own, and making himself stronger. Humans are granted whatever they desire by Malak, but they have to give their souls in return when their time comes. Bierce was one of these people. She used Agatha as a sacrifice for Malak and killed her to achieve fame and fortune. But when Malak came to collect, Bierce pulled a fast one with the completed ring. She managed to keep her soul, but Bierce is left trapped in her ballroom, and the completed ring is broken.
    • Surprisingly, Malak extends one to Doug after he's separated from Bierce in "Bearly Buried". If Doug manages to survive and give him the completed ring, Malak will give Doug his family back and more, exceeding Bierce's deal, but the cost still applies. Doug will still have to give Malak his soul when his time in his new life is up; whether or not Doug will accept is unknown.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": As seen when talking to Mama Bear, he hates to be called "Dear Malak".
  • Enraged by Idiocy: He is greatly infuriated by how so many of his underlings have failed to kill a single mortal. He even pressures Mama Bear to kill Doug ASAP.
Malak: "Mama Bear, do your job!"
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: In Bearly Buried, he tries to sway Doug to his side by promising him to restore his life, his youth, and revive his wife and daughter as the family he wished they were. If Doug's goal is truly to atone for his abuse of his family and amend his errors before dying, Malak couldn't be farther off the mark with guessing his true desire.
  • Evil Versus Evil: He's a demon that collects people's souls and is trying to kill the protagonist, but Bierce isn't innocent from the looks of it. Confirmed in Chapter 4, in which he reveals that all the evil spirits of the Dark Dimension wage war against each other to become the "ultimate evil", and so far his business has been "booming" thanks to his enormous collection of mortal souls.
  • Expy: Word of God states that he is actually inspired by the G-Man.
  • Eyeless Face: In his normal demon form, he has dark empty sockets. This is quickly subverted, as he actually has glowing orange eyes in both his door form and phantom form.
  • Faceless Eye: Takes the form of one on a large door in the hub. According to Bierce, his magic is limited there, so it's the only form he can appear in. And unlike in the actual levels where he can directly kill you, the only thing he can do here is stare you down and make threats.
  • Fighting a Shadow: How Malak infiltrates Bierce's ballroom, making Bierce's Curb-Stomp Battle against Malak a waste of effort given that it was only one avatar of him, just for multiple to show up.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: His "demon in a suit" form, which he often uses when talking to the player outside of Bierce's ballroom and also when he invades her ballroom. It is unclear if this is what he truly looks like or it is just his favorite disguise.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: His demon form sports three fingers per hand, while his phantom form adds an extra finger to both hands.
  • Game-Over Man: Takes over Bierce's role as this in Bearly Buried.
Malak: "Shredded by a teddy bear? That's so...pathetic!"
  • The Heavy: As the one controlling the monsters he appears in every cahpter since he appeared at the end of chapter 1.
  • Horned Humanoid: Par for the course for his "stereotypical demon" guise.
  • I Gave My Word: He will almost always fulfill his clients' greatest desires. However, said desires come at a price. And it's not just deals he will keep his word on; the same also goes for promises, such as the page quote above.
  • Ironic Name: "Malak" means "angel" in Arabic, despite quite clearly being a demon. Although, since the Devil in biblical canon used to be an angel... A Fallen Angel.
  • Jagged Mouth: His mouth looks like something one would carve onto a jack-o-lantern. Less pronounced in his phantom form, however.
  • Mind Rape: Inflicts this to a near-dead Doug at the end of Mascot Mayhem, which allows him to hijack Doug’s mind, and use him to invade Bierce’s ballroom.
  • Our Demons Are Different: As he explains to Doug at the beginning of Bearly Buried, "Heaven & Hell" are nothing more than rather "quaint and amusing" concepts that humanity believed in an afterlife. Instead, he came from a Dark Dimension, a place he rules over and the nightmare stages being a part of it, where evil souls would gather there and wage war on one another.
  • Pet the Dog: Implied with Agatha, who he seems to have adopted.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Goes without saying.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His phantom form has burning scarlet eyes. If you see them, run.
  • Self-Duplication: Just when it seems that Bierce has Malak pinned and at her mercy, he begins to chuckle, much to her confusion. Before long, Malak's laughter starts coming from every direction. Soon enough, duplicates of him begin to emerge from the portal, and no matter how many she destroys, more and more just keep coming.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Wears a black suit with a red tie and matching black pants. His phantom form keeps the suit, whilst putting a cloak over it.
  • Smoke Out: This is usually how he makes an entrance or makes his departure.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Gets more annoyed with his subordinates the more Doug outwits them.
Malak: I am surrounded by incompetents!
  • The Promise: After escaping from the Circus, Malak declares that he will come to get the ring pieces back, and will be bringing all the monsters the duo has faced with him. Unfortunately, he wasn't lying.
Malak: "Oh one more thing, Bierce. Do you remember what I said before? I promised that I'd be coming and that I'd be bringing your worst nightmares with me. Well, I always keep my promises!" "laughs"
  • This Cannot Be!: He is enraged and shocked by how easy it was for Doug to dispatch the Goliath Clowns.
  • Villain No Longer Idle: As soon as he realizes someone is trying to complete the Riddle of Heaven yet again. He decides to join the fray and will usually appear after all the soul shards are collected. But what is worse, is that he will become more and more dangerous as you progress through the game.
  • Villain Teleportation: How else is he able to access the various Nightmares? He has been shown to be capable of warping from place to place just by sheer will alone.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: It is stated that Malak is a bit of a shapeshifter and can change his form at will.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: People who make deals with him forfeit their souls in exchange for their desires.

Nightmare Enemies

    In General
  • Ambiguous Gender: On account of them being once human souls that perished and wound up trapped under Malak's thrall, it's very unlikely all the enemies that aren't singular like Agatha, the Joy Joy Gang, or Mama Bear are all a single gender. Due to E's notes, it's possible even the more masculine-looking Gold Watchers and Clown Gremlins qualify. They're often refered to as "it" rather than any proper pronouns, but they're far too detached from humanity to tell at this point.
  • Ax-Crazy: Just about all of the enemies in the game are extremely violent, insane, and eager to kill you. Even the enemies not outwardly crazy will still mutilate and kill you in brutal fashion (also bonus points go to the Gold Watchers, who will laugh as they kill you with an actual ax).
  • Berserk Button: Collecting the ring piece (or just getting close to doing it) is enough for them to start taking their jobs seriously and trying more elaborate ways of killing Doug.
  • Body Horror: Pretty noticeable in some enemies.
  • Demon of Human Origin: The notes left in the nightmares reveal that most of these monsters are the twisted souls of corrupt or tortured humans. Malak confirms in Chapter 4 that while it is not exactly hell (which he deems a "quaint and amusing concept"), the dark dimension is the place where all the evil souls gather, and his minions are human spirits he gathered as his army.
    • Played with, however, because the monstrous souls of sinners coexist alongside more traditional demons that never were humans such as Malak or the Joy Joy Gang.
  • Evil Is Bigger: All of the bosses (excluding a few) are much bigger than both Doug and the normal nightmare enemies.
  • Faux Affably Evil: While all of the enemies are unambiguously hostile to Doug, a fair few of them will stop to casually converse with you at certain points, especially the ones that talk. This completely stops once you collect the ring piece, however.
  • Females Are More Innocent: They certainly aren't innocent now, but Agatha and the Reaper Nurses, the first two unambiguously female monsters Doug faces have more tragic origins compared to the others, the former being sacrificed to Malak and the latter being abused women who hate men as a result. Averted full-stop with Penny and Mama Bear, however, who are just as, if not more evil than the others. And that's ignoring the very real possibility that, given what they are, the Monkeys, Watchers, Duckies, Clowns, and so on have plenty of female souls among them too.
  • Hell: While the "dark dimension" in which the game takes place is not hell (the demon Malak considers "heaven and hell" to be "quaint and amusing" concepts), it is the closest thing to it as it is an afterlife plane in which all evil souls gather, be they the spirits of dead criminals, inhuman monsters or deal-making demons, and wage war with each other to become "the ultimate evil".
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Most of them display this tendency, with Hangry the Pig, Mama Bear and her Trigger Teddies, and the hotel monkeys being the most obvious. Others, however, only display this momentarily in their jumpscares.
  • Oh, Crap!: When one takes into account that the power of a ring piece is all that sustains the nightmare realms they inhabit, their entering Nightmare Mode once you've collected all of the Soul Shards (required to collect the ring piece) can be interpreted as this.
  • Our Monsters Are Weird: Zig-zagged. They are all based on common horror monsters and tropes, albeit with their flavors of oddity. This is justified to an extent since they're all based on the fears and behaviors of humanity.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: They all gain these when in Nightmare Mode, which increases their movement speed and general aggression.
  • Sadist: Not only are they trying to kill you, but will do so with murderous glee.
  • Slasher Smile: Nearly all of the enemies sport these as they hunt down the player.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: All of them will attempt to hunt you down once you start collecting soul shards. This goes even further once you get the ring piece, as they start doing EVERYTHING in their power to kill you.
  • Tulpa: They're strongly implied to be this, as they all manifest from Doug Houser's various fears and troubled past.
  • Turns Red: Once you've collected all of the Soul Shards, all the enemies in the current level will go into Nightmare Mode, becoming much more feral or creepy looking completed with a darker or a Red and Black and Evil All Over color scheme and piercing red eyes.

Chapter 1: No Way Back

    Murder Monkeys

Murder Monkeys

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/murder_monkey_current.png
"That's what you get for monkeying around with Murder Monkeys!"

Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: N/A

The main enemies in "Monkey Business". A group of giant wind-up toy monkeys with knives for hands. They are always aware of Doug's location on the map and pursue him relentlessly once they get close enough to him.

  • Alliterative Name: Murder Monkeys.
  • Ambiguous Robots: At first glance, they look like monstrous monkeys. But then there is the fact that they have metal knives instead of hands and have wind-up keys on their backs. And unlike monsters who are Hostile Animatronics like the Joy Joy Gang or Living Toys like the Dread Duckies and the Trigger Teddies, these guys look very organic. Plus, if you listen closely to their jumpscare sound, you'll notice a robotic tone in their voice.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: They have knives for hands, and since their only goal is to murder you, the drawbacks of not having normal hands don't bother them.
  • Cymbal-Banging Monkey: They're larger, wind-up versions of this trope. Instead of cymbals, however, they have sharp knives.
  • Demon of Human Origin: In the Enhanced version, a note in one of the secret rooms reveals they're the twisted souls of humans who were violent murderers when they were alive, turned into destructive monkeys because in life they gave in to their animalistic urge to kill.
  • The Goomba: Zigzagged, they are the only monsters that are able to be avoided without the use of powers (speed boost, telepathy, primal fear, etc.), in fact, they are actually used as guinea pigs for those last two mentioned powers. However, despite this, they should not be underestimated as they are surprisingly good at tracking down the player and will corner you if you are not careful.
  • Living Toys: They're everything you can fear and hate in a wind-up monkey made bigger than a human.
  • Maniac Monkeys: Their crazed look and those knives they have for hands should get the idea across.
  • Mascot Mook: Very obvious if you know the game and its history. Even outside their level, they make more cameos than other enemies, most often either as level guards, drawings, and cardboard cutouts. Several even appear as caged "animals" at the circus level.
  • Monkey Morality Pose: A painting on their stage depicts them doing this.
  • Red Is Violent: They wear red bellhop uniforms and are extremely violent.
  • Scary Teeth: They have rows of sharp, bloody, crooked chompers. Try not to think too hard about why there's blood there.
  • Serial Killer: According to E, in life, they were people who gave into their primal desire to hunt and slaughter simply to sustain their crazed blood lust.
  • Starter Villain: They're the first enemies Doug faces, and they make up the entire first chapter.
  • Super-Deformed: They have very big heads which seem to seem to be far larger then their own torsos.
  • Tulpa: The Monkeys themselves seem to represent how Doug murdered his own family (intentionally or otherwise), while the hotel seems to represent Doug's infidelity to his wife, if his mistress' mention of "monkey business in some hotel" is anything to go by.
  • Wind-Up Key: They all have one on their backs which will start to turn when ever they walk.

    Chef Monkeys

Chef Monkeys

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_08_04_155035.png
Hungry? So are we. We'll be right with you.

Nightmare Mode

A group of extra violent Murder Monkeys that reside in the hotel kitchen.

  • Ambiguous Robots: Just like the Murder Monkeys, it isn't made clear if they are an animatronic, a toy, a cyborg, or something in between.
  • Battle Theme Music: Chef Frenzy. It's actually a Dark Reprise of the memetic "Pizza Time" theme from Spider-Man 2. Yes, really.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: While the regular Murder Monkeys have knives for hands, the Chef Monkeys have giant pizza-cutters for hands.
  • Canon Immigrant: They made their debut in the spin-off Monsters and Mortals, then made their way into the enhanced version of the OG game, pizza theme, and all.
  • Cymbal-Banging Monkey: Same as the Murder Monkeys, although, they could represent it better thanks to their circular cutter hands.
  • Dastardly Whiplash: They have mustaches and they do not even bother hiding the fact they are evil.
  • Evil Chef: They're chefs if their name indicates anything, and they're certainly just as evil and blood-thirsty as the other Murder Monkeys.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: They are somehow worse than the Murder Monkeys who are all killers and are dressed as chefs and don't hide the fact they want their guests to dine and die. It is pretty obvious they carried their taste for human flesh from their previous lives.
  • Living Toys: Just like their more common relatives, they too are the worst depictions of a monkey toy.
  • King Mook: They look like the Murder Monkeys but are now wearing chef attire and are slightly larger.
  • Maniac Monkeys: Just like the Murder Monkeys, only with chef attires.
  • Mythology Gag: The Chef Monkeys appearing in the kitchen after the player collects all the shards can be seen as a callback to a much earlier version of the "Monkey Business" level. Back then they could be seen in the kitchen but they never chased the player like they do in the enhanced version.
  • No-Sell: You can't damage them or even stun them.
  • Scary Teeth: Still pointy, still bloodstained, and still hungry.
  • Super-Deformed: Just like the Murder Monkeys, they also have very big heads.
  • To Serve Man: They seem to be the ones who wrote the signs in the lobby and the kitchen. And if that is the case, then that means that they not only kill mortals, but they also serve them up to their fellow monsters as a tasty meal.
  • Wind-Up Key: Just like the Murder Monkeys, they also have wind up keys on their back sides, however they spin much faster since they move much more quickly.

Chapter 2: Into Madness

    Agatha

Agatha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_08_04_155450.png
You can share everything with me; all your secrets, all your mistakes, all your pain. That's what best friends are for, right?
Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: Kathryn Cressida

The main enemy in "Elementary Evil", as well as the level's boss enemy. A demonic ghost girl who believes the Soul Shards of her Nightmare to be her friends. And she's less than thrilled to learn that Doug wants to take them away from her.

She isn't always aware of Doug's location, but she can hear every door Doug opens or closes and will follow the sounds, and she can always tell what general area of the school he's in. In Zone 2, she gains the ability to teleport in front of Doug during a chase.

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Those nails aren't just for show. She can do some severe damage if one isn't careful.
  • The Aloner: So far, she's the only monster that doesn't have any doubles, minions, or the like to assist her. Don't get excited, she calls in Malak, and as you see late in the level, she's not quite alone in that school.
  • Battle Theme Music: A hauntingly melancholic theme called Share Your Pain.
  • Body Horror: Her arms are long, sharp, and look as if they were burnt. Her face also qualifies, especially with the Glasgow Grin and large, black eyes. In her frenzy form, she also gains traces of blood around her burn marks.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Her eyes are completely black, and she's a deranged schoolgirl.
  • Bullfight Boss: In the Enhanced version, when you go back to the audience room near the exit after collecting all the shards, Agatha becomes this with a mix of Teleport Spam in an attempt to catch you. With no form of self-defense, you have to continually run away from her long enough for Bierce to open the doors to the exit.
  • Creepily Long Arms: Just look at those things.
  • Creepy Long Fingers: And her fingers are somehow even worse.
  • Creepy Child: If her face doesn't tip you off, maybe her extremely long, burnt hands will.
  • Demon of Human Origin: E's notes reveal that Agatha was a little girl who went through such suffering and pains her spirit was twisted by anger and sadness into the monster we face today. It is confirmed in Chapter 4 that she is the soul of the little girl Bierce sacrificed to invoke Malak.
  • Dual Boss: If you enter Agatha's fake portal while being pursued by Malak after retrieving the ring piece, she will join the chase.
  • Emotion Eater: Going by both E's notes and several hints of dialogue, she's able to do this in addition to just eating people, specifically their fear. This is likely one of the reasons she allows Doug to live for so long rather than just killing him outright, hoping that Doug feels afraid throughout the ordeal.
  • Glasgow Grin: She has two burnt scars on her checks that give the illusion she is smiling, even when she is furious.
  • Greyscale of Evil: She wears a black overall dress over a white blouse.
  • Happily Adopted: Seems to have this kind of relationship with Malak, whom she calls "Daddy".
  • Hypocrite: While Agatha's initial accusation of cheating for using the dash ability in the first part of Elementary Evil might be understandable, her subsequent use of teleportation powers in the second area makes her criticism less valid and less convincing.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Hints scattered throughout "Elementary Evil" suggest the bathrooms are good places to hide. They are. Right up until, while hiding inside facing the door and waiting for Agatha's search to carry her away, you hear her whisper into your ear from behind, "Do you feel safe in there?" You are safe, but unlike most of the time it's clear this is only because she's following the rules of the game.
  • Ironic Name: The name Agatha means to be both good and honorable. She has neither of these traits.
  • It's Personal: In Mascot Mayhem, she returns to help Malak fight Bierce, the woman who used her as a sacrifice and condemned her to Hell centuries ago. You can hardly blame Agatha for attacking Bierce and severely wounding her.
  • Mood-Swinger: Is excited to "play" with you, but gets easily angered when she can't kill the protagonist.
  • Mundane Utility: She teleports to the opposite side of closed doors instead of just opening them. This slows her down during a chase.
  • No-Sell: She's immune to Primal Fear in her nightmare form, so it's practically useless in her boss fight.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: She's got a solo nightmare to herself, and you get to see the shadows of her previous victims on the windows in the school. These shadows practically line the walls of the school when you see them…
    • It's to the point where she doesn't even get a new boss from "Monsters and Mortals" added to her level like the Monkeys and Watchers do, instead taking the boss fight section for herself.
  • Punny Name: Her name sounds very similar to agony, doesn't it?
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has jet black hair and bleached white skin.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: She replaces her white blouse with a red one when she decides to stop playing around.
  • Red Herring: She's around the age of Doug's daughter, her level shows Doug hints of what he did to said daughter, and Stranger Sewers even says that Doug's daughter, Tammy, was prone to burning her arms. However, Agatha isn't Tammy at all. A voice log from Bierce and Chapter 4's climax shows she isn't Doug's own demon, but rather Bierce's.
  • Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: She seems to be based on one. However, her hair is very short and never obscures her eyes.
  • Tragic Monster: She's certainly a monster now, but while most of Malak's minions are Asshole Victims stuck in their own sins (Murder, lying, heresy, etc.), Agatha is what she is now because she was consumed by rage and hatred for Bierce, who callously sacrificed Agatha to Malak. And Agatha was the daughter of one of Bierce's maids. Ouch.
  • Tulpa: Despite being the maid's daughter that Bierce sacrificed to Malak, Agatha and her school seem to represent Tammy and the young age at which she was killed.
  • Undead Barefooter: She seems to have came back from the dead a long time ago and she doesn't wear shoes.
  • Undead Child: Possibly a demonic interpretation of such given her appearance and one of the secrets.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Begins to unravel when the player gets the ring piece on her stage.
Agatha: I welcomed you here and tried so hard to be nice to you, but you don't care! You don't want to be my friend! You just want to steal my things! You're a mean… bad person! Now you're in trouble. You made Daddy mad, too…
  • Villain Teleportation: She's able to do this once the player reaches Zone 2 of her stage, which can result in her catching you off guard.
  • You Remind Me of X: According to Doug after completing Elementary Evil, Agatha reminds him of his daughter as she's around the same age as the former.

    The Alphabet Letters

The Alphabet Letters

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_letters.png
Now I know my "ABC"s! Next time won't you die with me?!

Voiced by: Vince Livings

The boss enemies of "Elementary Evil" exclusive to Monsters and Mortals. A gang of monsters takes the appearance of the letters A through G that appears when boss-time is triggered.

  • Battle Theme Music: A demented take on the Alphabet song, called Lesson Learned.
  • The Brute: Letter G doesn't have oversized fangs like the others and prefers to punch its victims into submission with its muscular arms.
  • Cyclops: Letters A and B have only a single eye.
  • Lethal Joke Character: It is kind of hard to take them seriously considering they are quite literally sentient alphabet characters. However, these guys can and will kill you if you are not careful.
  • No-Sell: Surprisingly, they are the last enemies you would expect to be immune to being damaged.
  • Pokémon Speak: The only vocabulary they have in their dictionaries are the letters that they are shaped after.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: They all have glowing red eyes, and are definitely a warning sign.
  • Scary Teeth: Oh yeah. They all have this to varying degrees. A has a small mouth of fangs between its legs. B, C, E, and F have More Teeth than the Osmond Family with three of them being little more than a gaping mouth with legs. D has no mouth but fangs on the front for impaling its victims. G doesn't have pointed fangs, but still looks plenty unsettling with its oversized pearly whites and gums covering the inside of the letter.
  • Third Eye: Letter C has three eyes, but they don't have any mystical powers.
  • Zerg Rush: When they show up they will wildly attack anyone nearby and could potentially gang up on a single player.

    Gold Watchers

Gold Watchers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_08_04_160033.png
Tread no further. We are watching.

Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: Christopher Corey Smith

The main enemies in "Deadly Decadence". Four living statues who only move when Doug isn't looking in their direction. They're currently the fastest enemy in the game, but they gradually slow down the closer they get to Doug. Their number is increased to seven in Zone 2, where the additional three Watchers don’t attack Doug upon being close enough, but will still kill him if he makes physical contact.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: They're modeled after 18th-century golden statues of gentlemen during the colonial ages, and are quite sadistic in hunting any visitor in their level.
  • Can't Move While Being Watched: They only move when you aren't facing them and freeze in place when you are.
  • Demon of Human Origin: According to E's notes, they are the souls of greedy humans who are now cursed to be trapped inside the very gold they loved so much in life.
  • Eyeless Face: Subverted. Their eye holes are normally empty, but in their Nightmare Mode, they either gain or reveal red eyes that always track your movement.
  • Giggling Villain: They can be sometimes be heard laughing when they're nearby.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: They are golden nobelmen statues that sees anyone who intrudes into their domain as being beneath them.
  • Gold Fever: E's notes indicate that the Gold Watchers are the souls of greedy humans that were obsessed enough to become encased in gold as living statues. In the room where you find said notes, there are what look like several completely golden statues bowing and kneeling around a cauldron of molten gold.
  • Hunting the Most Dangerous Game: They seem to enjoy stalking and killing "peasants" like the protagonist through their opulent mansion.
  • Light Is Not Good: They wear white 18th-century uniforms and are made of gold, but are far from friendly. It becomes inverted upon their Nightmare Mode.
  • Living Statue: Statues that are very much alive and out to kill you.
  • Nightmare Face: The smiles they have when catching the player qualify.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: They view Doug and any other visitor as "peasants", with one of their plaques stating that "Peasants shall serve". It's also justified as they're inspired by many different 18th-century golden gentleman statues from the colonial ages.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: "He who has the gold makes the rules".
  • Slasher Smile: They keep a constant one as they chase you, and they can give an even bigger one if they catch you.
  • Smug Smiler: Their default expression, but if they catch you, it evolves into a sadistic nightmarish one.
  • Stalker without a Crush: They'll follow you wherever you take your eyes off of them.
  • Tulpa: Their Nightmare seems to represent how Doug loved his money more than his family and would spoil his mistress with expensive gifts (namely a new car).
  • Villains Out Shopping: Several Gold Watchers can be seen simply enjoying themselves and drinking some tea in the lounge at the start of "Torment Therapy".

Chapter 3: Retribution

    Dread Duckies

Dread Duckies

PAY ATTENTION! Not everything is what it seems.

Disguised/Dummy

Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: N/A

The main enemies in "Stranger Sewers". Six giant rubber duckies with legs who disguise themselves as the dummy Duckies littered around the map. They can also stun Doug using the smaller head they can extend from their mouths. The Dread Duckies become active once Doug gets close enough to them, but they disguise themselves again should he manage to get away. In Zone 2, their number is increased to nine Duckies and they remain active upon dropping the disguise.

  • Alliterative Name: Dread Duckies.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Deceivers, manipulators, liars, and all who hide their evil intentions behind a harmless appearance become Dread Duckies when they die, according to E.
  • Body Horror: Their eyeholes are misshapen, they lack eyes entirely (unless you count the ones that appear in their Nightmare Mode), they have a smaller head in their mouths, and their legs are human-like and shriveled..
  • Demon of Human Origin: They are the souls of liars and deceivers, left to rot in the dark dimension's sewers.
  • Eyeless Face: Subverted. Like the Gold Watchers, they are normally eyeless until they either gain or reveal red ones in their frenzy forms.
  • Foul Waterfowl: They are filthy toy ducks with rotten legs that are very hostile towards anyone that disturbs them.
  • Finishing Stomp: When a Dread Duckie catches Doug, it lets out a sadistic laugh and proceeds to place its foot on his face as one of their jumpscares.
  • I Shall Taunt You: They truly love doing this, especially whenever you're at their mercy. In one of their kill animations, they even pause to mock Doug by dancing at him.
  • Living Toys: They're living rubber duckies.
  • Master of Disguise: To an extent. They don't have a lot of disguises to choose from, but they can feign normal ducks to the point that - if it weren't for Telepathy - you'd have a really hard time bypassing the level safely.
  • Mook Chivalry: If they manage to stun Doug, they will pause and do a little dance as a way of giving him time to snap out of it.
  • Multiple Head Case: Technically speaking, they have two heads, but the second one is hidden inside the normal head. It's up to interpretation if the said head is even alive.
  • Mutants: While it isn't said, both their motifs and size in relation to the smaller ones also found down there imply that they're mutant rubber ducks (at the very least based on this trope).
  • Nested Mouths: They have a small duck head inside that springs out to stun the player.
  • Toothy Bird: No rubber duck should have human teeth. Let alone two sets of them.
  • Tulpa: The secret room in their Nightmare implies that they represent how Doug viewed his wife and daughter as "defective" and "insufferable" thanks to their mental disorders and disabilities.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Just as they were originally people, they pretend to be more harmless than they are and take joy in fooling anyone that falls for it.
  • You Shall Not Evade Me: Does this with Doug in one of its jumpscares by reeling him in with their smaller duck head like a fish caught on a hook.

    Doom Ducky

Doom Ducky

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_08_04_161851.png
Fortunately, watching you run around obediently has reminded me that I have a loyal pet as well.
Voiced by: N/A

The boss of "Stranger Sewers". A giant rubber duck with multiple arms. It throws Dread Duckies at Doug, can extend its head at him, and can summon Dread Duckies to attack him.

  • Advancing Boss of Doom: At the end of the level, it and the Dread Duckies will immediately ambush the player from the side and chase them. Although very slow, it's very relentless in pursuit, even destroying walls and doors to catch up.
  • Alliterative Name: Doom Ducky.
  • Animalistic Abomination: Out of all of the boss enemies, Doom Ducky is by far one of the most unnatural. While the Dread Duckies could be seen as humanoids in duck suits, it can't be considered that as it is far too large and it has arms emerging from random holes all over its back. It has glowing red eyes, and a long bill filled with human-like teeth. Additionally, it is always watching the player from the moment they enter the sewer, and will try to stop them the moment they leave.
  • Battle Theme Music: Rising Terror.
  • Body Horror: Like the Dread Duckies, its limbs are shriveled grey, only this time, there's a dozen or so of them crammed into a hunched-backed duck shell. In fact, one of the longer arms is responsible for holding the head, suggesting that the head is being puppeteered somehow. Oh, and it has nails sticking into its cracked head to boot.
  • Crown-Shaped Head: Plus, these three nails give the illusion this avian is wearing a crown. Just further showing how they are the leader of the flock.
  • The Darkness Gazes Back: You can see it looking through a hole in the wall near the beginning of the level and a sewer grate in one of the larger rooms within a later part while you're collecting soul shards.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: While it still quacks, it also has a deep, demonic voice behind it. In fact, if one listens closely to whenever it hits a pillar, it even says a very deep "Ow".
  • Fastball Special: If the Doom Ducky isn't able to reach the target it is trying to kill with its Nested Mouths. It will simply just pick up one of the plentiful lifeless duckies in its chamber and will throw it at them.
  • Foul Waterfowl: It is a gigantic, monstrous toy duck, with several rotten arms emerging from its back, and will not stop until it has killed the one who has intruded upon its lair.
  • Hive Mind: Implied in its relationship to the Dread Duckies. Besides the fact that it can summon Dread Duckies whenever it feels like it, active Dread Duckies will get stunned if Doom Ducky itself was stunned beforehand.
  • Large and in Charge: Apparently to the smaller Dread Duckies. This is most notable during the boss fight and escape sequence where they cooperate to stop Doug.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Despite its size, it can somehow move without visible legs, and it's fast enough to catch up with you if you're not fast enough.
  • Living Toys: A very large and demonic one in fact, and the climactic boss of its level.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Played with, for the thing is a whole mass of arms inhabiting a duck shell.
  • Mutants: Just like their smaller counterparts, they seem to be based on this. The only difference is that it is essentially a rubber duck that was mutated twice.
  • Nested Mouths: Like its lesser counterparts, it has a mechanism inside its mouth, though it's a large glove-like hand instead of a smaller duck head.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: They glow in the dark and are far more organic when compared to the dim lights in the frenzied Dread Duckies.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: Compared to its smaller lackeys, the Doom Ducky seems to not know how to call it quits. Defeat it in battle, and it will continue its pursuit for him throughout the first zone. Close off the zone, and it will make another jab at attacking you near the portal.
  • Toothy Bird: Again, no rubber ducky should have human teeth.
  • Use Your Head: Will use its neck to snatch up Doug from across the room. If it hits a pillar, it will temporarily knock itself out.
  • Undying Loyalty: According to Malak, out of all the monsters under his command, the Doom Ducky is by far the most loyal to him.
  • White Gloves: Humorously, the Doom Ducky actually wears these on their hands, albeit being extremely withered and tattered.

    Clown Gremlins

Clown Gremlins

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_08_04_162048.png
The only thing you have to fear is fear itself! Oh, and evil clowns.

Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: Christopher Corey Smith

The main enemies of "Crazy Carnevil". They come in groups of five, totaling ten in Zone 1 and twenty-five in Zone 2. In Zone 1, they spawn from the two Clown Cars roaming the map. In Zone 2, they wander around in search of Doug and if even one Clown sees him, the rest of the Clowns in its group will also become aware of his location and pursue him as well.

  • Ax-Crazy: Despite their size and weak skulls, they are still willing to laugh and yell nonsense while intent on beating the crap out of you. Their names also imply that they're pretty destructive and mischievous.
  • Bald of Evil: Terrifying clowns without a hair on their head.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: They have black sclera and are very much insane.
  • Demon of Human Origin: They are the souls of cowardly humans who antagonized and provoked others for their amusement. They have truly become the vicious clowns they were in life.
  • Dirty Coward: Even as dangerous monsters, they still retain the cowardly behavior from their past lives. Case in point, they will retreat to their respective clown cars if Doug decides to stun them even once, only feeling confident again when attacking as a swarm. Even under the authority of higher beings like the Goliath Clowns, the Clown Gremlins will retreat the moment they go down. They don't even assist Malak when Doug completes certain objectives.
  • Griping About Gremlins: They aren't called Clown "Gremlins" for nothing - they're destructive little cowards that will hunt you in numbers.
  • Hyperspace Mallet: In Monsters in Mortals, it is shown they are able to summon tiny mallets that pack quite the punch.
  • Laughing Mad: Not that surprising since they are clowns. By the sound of it, they're having the time of their lives chasing you.
  • The Gadfly: They absolutely love making others suffer for their own amusement.
  • Greyscale of Evil: Unlike most colorful clowns, they are black and white, and sepia all over. Although, they do become a bit more colorful in the second zone.
  • Monster Clown: They're evil midget clowns with bald heads and sharp teeth, for crying out loud.
  • Psychic Link: They all seem to have have one because if one of them knows where you are, then the rest will too.
  • Respawning Enemies: No matter how many Clown Gremlins you kill or scare off, they always come back in a full swarm, sometimes in larger numbers.
  • Super-Deformed: Just like the monkeys, they also have very big heads. But unlike the monkeys, they pull iy off better because of their small size.
  • Scary Teeth: They have a good set of pearly chompers not too dissimilar to shark teeth.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: They're reptilian, beady, and they glow in the dark.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Seemingly so. Given that they retreat from you stunning them most of the time and you're already close to collecting the ring piece, it makes some sense for them to stop retreating in their nightmare forms. This is also subverted since they only do this in nightmare mode.
  • Troll: According to E, this is what they were in life and so in death, they mock and provoke the player character. While they can kill him if they catch him, they can be stunned/killed by what is essentially a weaponized Death Glare.
  • Tulpa: They appear to be representations of Doug himself and how much of a fool he was for forsaking the family that genuinely loved him despite his selfishness.
  • The Unintelligible: Other than "ow" and "no", they can barely speak comprehensible words, instead making loud and almost comical gibberish.
  • Zerg Rush: Their main behavior. Since they aren't too much of a threat by themselves, they rely heavily on telekinesis to draw each other towards Doug en masse.

Keep 'em laughing while you die, won't you?
Voiced by: Christopher Corey Smith

The bosses of "Crazy Carnevil". They will spawn Clown Gremlins from their mouths should Doug kill or scare some of them away and will pound their fist at the ground in an attempt to crush Doug.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: They're the oversized versions of their smaller brethren, and four of them attack Doug at the end of the level... and fail miserably.
  • Battle Theme Music: It's Showtime.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Just like the Clown Gremlins, they too have black sclera, and are just as crazy as them.
  • Dark Is Evil: Their skin is far darker than their smaller cousins (possibly because of the lighting). and they wear mostly black clothes. Oh, and did we forget to mention that they are evil?
  • Fearless Fool: Instead of being cowards, the Goliaths won't actually back down from you fighting back. Too bad they aren't very durable.
  • Flunky Boss: They will spit out (and we mean that literally) a Clown Gremlin now and then.
  • Foil: To the Clown Gremlins in multiple ways. The Clown Gremlins are small, cowardly, have dull clothing and body paint, small slashes on their eyes, both a frill and a hat, die in one hit, rely on swarm tactics, and can revive themselves. In stark contrast, the Goliath Clowns are huge, fearless, have bright clothing and body paint, have huge slashes on their eyes, lack neither frills or hats, are far more durable (which isn't saying much), rely on sheer strength as well, and they don't come back when you kill them.
  • Glass Cannon: An extremely bizarre example. You would think these giant clowns would be as strong as they are powerful, right? Nope! Turns out, all it takes is one good swing from a mallet to make them go poof.
  • King Mook: Essentially giant Clown Gremlins.
  • Large and in Charge: Shown near the ending boss fight, which makes sense considering that they make the Clown Gremlins.
  • Made of Plasticine: Hitting one of their hands with a hammer twice (once on easy difficulty) is enough to cause them to implode.
  • Monster Clown: Qualifies in larger proportions.
  • Power Floats: In Monsters and Mortals, it is actually shown that they are able to levitate in mid-air.
  • Power Glows: An awesome feature of these giant clowns is that the markings on their bodies are actually glowing. Talk about a neon paint job!
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: They wear black clothes that have red accents and are Obviously Evil.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Their eyes are not only glowing red, but they also have creepy white pupils.
  • Super-Deformed: Not only are the large in size, but their heads are huge too. This definitely adds to the creep factor.
  • Troll: Similarly to the Clown Gremlins, they take absolute glee in messing with people. This is best shown by how they could have easily killed Doug on the roller coaster, but instead, decide to just wave at him creepily.

    Clown Spiders

Clown Spiders

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clown_spider_1.png
The itsy bitsy clown spider climbed out from the abyss...
A group of boss enemies exclusive to Monsters and Mortals. They are giant clown heads with spider legs that are summoned alongside the Goliath Clowns during boss time.
  • Battle Theme Music: Itsy Bitsy Clown Spider, which is a demented take on The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: They have the legs of a spider, and they move just as creepily as a normal one as well.
  • Dual Boss: While not just two bosses, they do share their boss time with the Goliath Clowns. Specifically, they attack players on the walkways while the Goliaths attack from the sides.
  • Giant Spider: They are surprisingly big in size.
  • Monster Clown: They have the heads of a frenzied Clown Gremlin (but with bigger eyes), but they're also attached to spider legs.
  • The Voiceless: Compared to many other characters in-game, they neither speak nor make animalistic noises. The most you'll get is hearing them devour you alive.

Chapter 4: Mortal Ramifications

    Reaper Nurses

Reaper Nurses

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_09_30_175039.png
You are just another vile man after all. Chaotic and infectious, like a virus. Very well. We know how to deal with viruses. If eradication is your true desire, we shall grant it.

Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: Tara Strong

The main enemies of "Torment Therapy". Wielding giant syringes, they claim to be a sisterhood of healing and mercy, but their idea of "healing and mercy" is very different from your average medical professional, especially towards men.

Three Nurses roam both Zones of the hospital. They can turn invisible and will remain cloaked while roaming the map, but their voices can still be heard and their roller-skates can still be seen. They can also stun Doug by throwing pills at him during a chase, and just like Agatha, they're attracted to the sound of opening doors.

  • Affably Evil: Towards women anyway. According to E's secret note, they genuinely welcomed her into their hospital and had no intention of harming her, even after she refused their offer to make her a Reaper Nurse. E was free to stay and explore the hospital as much as she wanted as long as she didn’t disrupt their activities or enter the restricted areas. Sure enough, they only became hostile towards E when she entered a restricted area.
  • Asshole Victim: Considering that it's implied that the hospital attracts the souls of horrible men, one could argue that their victims are this.
  • Battle Axe Nurse: At first glance, they seem to be seductive yet bubbly nurses who only want to help Doug take a break from all of the stressful life and death encounters. He quickly learns that this is nothing more than a ruse as the Reaper Nurses are all sadistic misandrists who take great pride and pleasure in torturing men.
  • Casting Gag: While she doesn't play her in the initial game, Tara Strong's debut as Harley Quinn began in a series that first featured her as an Ax-Crazy Hospital Hottie in a Naughty Nurse Outfit.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: What they do to their unwary victims via seemingly innocuous checkups. That, or they send unruly ones to the therapy unit for more "merciful" healing.
  • Cute Monster Girl: The most human-like enemy seen in the game and is a Hospital Hottie wearing a Naughty Nurse Outfit.
  • Dark Action Girl: They can stun and One-Hit Kill the protagonist. They also have incredible athletic abilities, leaping from rooftops, and tossing themselves at Doug (literally) to stop him once he defeats the Matron.
  • Demon of Human Origin: They are the souls of misandrist women, that their hatred and scorn of men turned into monsters. The hospital is noted by E to specifically attract the souls of misogynistic abusers as "patients" - E even notes how the two groups complement each other perfectly.
  • Does Not Like Men: Not immediately obvious since Doug's appearance at least appears to be to their liking, but they can't stand men and try to kill the player shortly after meeting him. The second stage of the level takes place in a jail/dungeon masquerading as their "Therapy" center. The walls are scrawled with Straw Misandrist graffiti, such as "Men Are Stupid And Weak". E's notes also reveal that they were created out of the souls of women filled with hatred and scorn for men.
  • Faceless Goons: They wear bags over their heads throughout the entire level, so we never find out what they look like underneath. That's probably for the best since it most likely isn't a pretty sight, all things considered.
  • Fan Disservice: They're shapely nurses running a strip club in their hospital lobby. Chances are you won't be too aroused once they start trying to jam a giant needle in you. That's not an entendre, they have giant syringes and they will use them against you. And even if you're not bothered by that, the fact that they have a whole hospital wing dedicated to torturing patients should set off a red flag.
  • Faux Affably Evil: When first introduced, they're as flirty as they are polite if having a borderline cult-like attachment to Malak. A few minutes later, they're trying to kill the player via "medical tests" and getting increasingly furious when the player understandably refuses to play along.
  • Giant Medical Syringe: The Reaper Nurses wield giant syringes as their main weapons.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Much like Agatha, the Nurses can hear Doug whenever he opens one of the many doors in the hospital. However, the doors also give away their position while they’re cloaked.
    • In the Matron boss fight, the nurses must be beaten back with their giant syringes, which they drop when stunned.
  • Hospital Hottie: The Nurses have very attractive designs, but this trope isn’t played straight, considering they’re very unnerving and not quite human.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Their primary way of attacking, as well as the second trap that Doug must escape from during the “Lab Work” intro.
  • Invisibility: The Reaper Nurses have the unique ability to turn themselves completely invisible. They will use this trick to sneak up on the player and catch them off guard.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Constantly spout voice lines while searching for Doug. Justified as the Nurses would be way harder to keep track of otherwise due to their cloaking.
  • Monstrous Humanoid: They can see through those bag masks just fine, they all have the same voice, they can turn invisible and weaponize giant pills, they are capable of catching up with a speeding ambulance, and they all serve Malak. This all should tip you off that they aren't normal nurses. If the fact that they run a nightmare-strip-club-hospital didn't already do that.
  • Mercy Kill: Considers killing Doug to be their way of mercy. Lampshaded by the PA announcement once Doug escapes the lab work tests.
    "Lethal Mercy is authorized!"
  • No-Sell: While cloaked, they are immune to the Reveal Shard's effects.
  • Pink Is Erotic: The entrance to the hospital in "Torment Therapy" is lit up by pink signs, pink neon lights, and the Reaper Nurses are sultry and seductive. This level is designed to represent Doug's lust for other women and sexual misconduct.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Their Frenzy mode turns their uniforms and masks red and black instead of the comparatively benign red and white.
  • Rollerblade Good: These nurses are some of the fastest enemies in the game, and for good reason. They have wheels attached to their mary jane high heels! Meaning they will be able to quickly catch up to you and you will barely have enough time to react.
  • Shout-Out: They're an obvious one to the Nurses from Silent Hill and Harley Quinn from Batman: Arkham Asylum.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: They are able to summon giant syringes that appear out of nowhere. However, it isn't limited to just syringes as one of them summoned a phone so she could talk with Malak about his current situation and then got rid of the phone once she noticed the mortal the demon was referring to.
  • Tulpa: Like the hotel in "Monkey Business", the Reaper Nurses seem to represent Doug's infidelity, more specifically the secretaries themselves. Meanwhile, the hospital seems to represent how Doug is currently dying from cancer on a hospital bed.
  • White and Red and Eerie All Over: Their uniforms are primarily white with red accents. And they are definitely eerie as they are cute nurses who pretend to be nice when in reality they just want to make you suffer.
  • Worst Aid: Attempting to roast Doug when he steps on a scale, trying to Iron Maiden him with needles, and attempting to trap Doug in a room with a laser spewing CAT Scan machine. Needless to say, despite what they say, this is NO place of healing.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: During the second half of the level, the Nurses gain the ability to throw pills that stun Doug much like the Dread Duckies can. Unlike the Dread Duckies, however, the Nurses will immediately go in for the kill instead of taunting.

    The Matron

The Matron

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_10_08_000734.png
You dare hit a woman?! I'll crush you into dust!!
Voiced by: Kathryn Cressida

The leader of the nurses and the boss enemy in "Torment Therapy".

  • Acrofatic: Despite her obese build, she is alarmingly swift.
  • Battle Axe Nurse: Even more so than the Reaper Nurses. She is a large, obese, sickly, and brutal nurse who crushes any man who dares to step foot in her hospital. Even her underlings are aware of the fact that she doesn't even try to play cute.
Reaper Nurse: "I think you will find that she is not as hospitable as we are."
  • Battle Theme Music: Patient Transfer.
  • Does Not Like Men: She hates them with a burning fury.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Being the leader of the Reaper Nurses, who are the twisted souls of misandrist women, she views any violence used against her and them by Doug (and any male in general) as an unforgivable act.
  • Fat Bitch: When asked if the Matron is still going to be a fat woman in the 8th Q&A Livestream, Vince describes her as a "very large, powerful woman". In-game, not only is she more "heavy-set" compared to the Reaper Nurses, but also much bigger than them, and far meaner too.
  • The Faceless: Just like the Reaper Nurse, she too wears a bag on her head. Considering that she is a prime example of Fan Disservice, this is for the better.
  • Giant Woman: She is a huge woman. And it has been estimated that she stands at a height of 30 feet!
  • High-Speed Battle: The battle against her takes place across a series of ambulances that Doug and the Reaper Nurses jump across.
  • Large and in Charge: And we mean large! The head of the Matron alone towers over not only Doug but the ambulance he rides on top of!
  • Lightning Bruiser: She's larger, stronger and faster than her tiny minions.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: You know someone means business when they choose to outright kill you the moment they see you, as Doug finds out the hard way whenever he encounters her. Any dialogue she does have is either a command to her underlings or a quick threat to Doug.
  • Roller Blade Good: Instead of wearing roller skates like her underlings, her feet are completely replaced with a metal bar with two large wheels similar to the ones found on a wheelchair.
  • Saw Blades of Death: She dual-wields two tonfas that have buzzsaws attached to them that allow her to shred anything that gets in her way.
  • Stout Strength: According to Vince, she's a "very large, powerful woman".
  • Weaksauce Weakness: She is knocked out by falling over after tripping over a few of her reaper nurses.
  • White and Red and Eerie All Over: She too wears a white and red uniform. However, it is significantly dirtier, just emphasizing how this lady isn't even hiding the fact that she is a homicidal misandrist.

    The Joy Joy Gang
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_422_8.png
Ready to make some new friends?note
Nightmare Mode

The main enemies of "Mascot Mayhem". A trio of animatronics programmed to bring joy to the Joy Joy Land theme park. Anyone in Joy Joy Land deemed to not be "joyful" is quickly corrected or disposed of by the Joy Joy Gang. Each member has different abilities that separate them from their fellow members.

Tropes applying to the Joy Joy Gang in general

  • Affably Evil: They just want to make sure you have a joy joy day! Pay heed though, because they will laugh like maniacs at your demise.
  • All for Nothing: They are the only monsters to successfully capture Doug for Malak in "Mascot Mayhem". However in Bearly Buried, due to the blue orb's intervention and Malak's tendency to again underestimate Doug and also hide the ring pieces at Mama Bears' level, their efforts became for naught as Doug manages to get back all the ring pieces including the new one and escape.
  • Animal Stereotypes:
    • Lucky is a rabbit who's very fast; the lyrics to his rap "Bad Rabbit" also imply that he's a sexual deviant.
    • Hangry is a pig who loves to eat and is the strongest of the Joy Joy Gang due to his burly build.
    • Penny is a chicken who lays eggs and is sensitive about her looks.
  • Ax-Crazy: All three of them are psychopaths who take immense joy in murdering you whenever they see you.
  • Berserk Button: Ring piece aside, all three of them have separate berserk buttons that Doug is forced to press. Penny hates her looks being ruined, Hangry hates not being able to eat mortals (especially once you burn his jaw off), and Lucky hates losing.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Compared to the other enemies, these guys act like cartoon characters. They bicker with each other constantly, treat Doug like a new toy, and they look a little silly to boot, but they aren't to be underestimated. The trio is composed of 3 psychopaths who are perverted, cannibalistic, and obsessed with Doug. Hangry can break through obstacles to ambush you, Lucky is strategic by using security cameras to monitor your activities, and Penny can throw eggs at you and fly rather stealthily. They are also the only monsters so far to hinder Doug and Bierce; they succeeded in capturing Doug and would have killed him had Malak chosen not to spare him.
  • Black Dot Pupils: They all have these.
  • Creepy Mascot Suit: They are based on a children's theme park and wear mascot costumes of a rabbit, a chicken, and a pig. Their costumes only become creepier once Doug electrocutes them.
  • Demon of Human Origin: Subverted. After discovering that all of the other minions of Malak are the souls of sinful humans turned into monsters, you would expect the same for the Joy Joy Gang. However, E reveals in her notes that while they have a soul, it is not a human one. She can only say that Lucky is not like the "other" monsters, and is just a "killing machine" built solely for "destruction and chaos". A case of Our Demons Are Different.
  • Faux Affably Evil: As performers for a children's theme park, they are jovial and toy with their prey. After singing their introduction, Lucky starts laughing sadistically and he and Penny begin the hunt. Hangry also chuckles like a maniac after he tells the player he wants to eat him.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The Joy Joy Gang somewhat fall into this with Lucky as the Thief, Hangry as the Fighter, and Penny as the Mage.
  • Glowing Mechanical Eyes: While they normally have white eyes with black pupils, after being electrocuted, it is revealed that they have robotic optics that glow red with rage.
  • Happiness Is Mandatory: In Joy Joy Land. The Joy Joy Gang's purpose is to make sure everyone in Joy Joy Land is "joyful". Or else.
  • Hive Mind: The Joy Joy Gang clones seem to share the same memories as the original trio. Even after the originals were destroyed and reconstructed into Joy Kill, they were replaced by three new members who were portrayed no differently from them. The Lucky clone even talks to Doug as if he is the Lucky who comprises Joy Kill.
Joy Kill (Lucky's head): This isn't over!
Lucky clone: I told you it wasn't over.
  • Hostile Animatronics: They seem to resemble real people in costumes at first, but their Nightmare Mode exposes portions of their endoskeletons, confirming them to be this trope.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: While Hangry desires eating humans the most, the other two seem to show this tendency as well. Penny outright admits to wanting Doug's ribs if she catches him at least a few times (sometimes in a joking manner), and Hangry mentions in his Image Song that he sometimes serves Lucky mortal ribs.
  • Image Song: Joy Joy Ditty. Doubles as their Leitmotif.
  • Informed Flaw: They're described as psychopaths working together in Teeth-Clenched Teamwork. While the first part of that description is undeniable, they seem to get along just fine when they interact. The worst they get is arguing over Hangry's appetite.
  • It's Personal: Although they're already trying to kill Doug from the get-go, their animosity for him becomes personal after getting shocked by him and revealing their Nightmare Modes.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Despite the comedy in their level and their appearance, they are the reason why Doug gets captured and Malak breaks into Bierce's Ballroom.
  • Laughably Evil: In comparison to the previous enemies, the Joy Joy Gang on a whole has rather amusing quirks and colorful personalities that bleed through the horror elements of the game. The cutscenes that they appeared in at the bottom castle section of their level involves suffering from Amusing Injuries and along with Doug managing to pull a fast one on them that led them into getting crushed between two pistons.
  • Leitmotif: Every score in the game's soundtrack with the word "Joy" in the title includes Joy Joy Ditty's melody in the musical composition. These scores include Only the Joyful, Feel the Joy, and Joy Kill; the main theme, chase theme and boss theme used in "Mascot Mayhem" respectively.
  • Me's a Crowd: There's more than one copy of each Joy Joy Gang member to the point of creating an army, and they all share the same personality, memories, and animosity against Doug.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After they successfully managed to corner Doug through Joy Kill, just as he was about to escape their realm, they proceed to gleefully lay a brutal beatdown on the man, and they would've killed him if it weren't for Malak intervening as he still needed Doug alive.
  • Ruder and Cruder: Their raps, or at least some of them, are far more crass and raunchy compared to the game itself. (It should be noted that RockitGaming, like many nerdcore singers, isn't a stranger to swearing in his songs) Lucky alone makes some sexually charged quips and curses like a sailor in his song.
  • Sadist: All three of them embody this trope to some extent. This is best shown when they finally incapacitate Doug. Rather than just letting him die, they choose to wake him just to beat him to death slowly, laughing like maniacs while playing the Joy Joy Ditty to mock him.
  • Sinister Surveillance: They are all able to see through the cameras and will become alerted when they spot anything that steps into the cameras'spotlight.
  • Soul Jar: Zig-Zagged. They are said by E to each carry some kind of inhuman soul and they are in the form of theme park animatronics. As animatronics, they can be destroyed, rebuilt, and upgraded but it's not clear if it's the same 3 souls split between hundreds of other identical animatronics, or if they are all individual souls who inhabit the same line of animatronics.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Word of God describes them as a group of psychopaths working together to achieve a common goal. In other words, they don't necessarily care about each other but they still stick together to each get what they individually want.
  • Terminator Impersonator: Word of God states that they are partially inspired by the terminators. This can be best seen when one looks at the concept art of their endoskeleton.
    • One of Bierce's quips if Doug is killed by an animatronic references this:
''"You've been terminated. Humanely, I'm sure."
  • Terrible Trio: One composed of a Hair-Raising Hare, a Feathered Fiend, and a Sinister Swine.
  • Tulpa: Their desire to make Doug "one of the joyful" seems to stem from Doug's prior belief that his wife and daughter were "sucking the joy" out of his life.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: They're a group of three animatronics with rather amusing quirks and colorful personalities used by Malak in capturing Doug.

Tropes applying to Lucky the Rabbit

You know why they call me Lucky? Because I never lose!

Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: Chris Jay Alex

An animatronic rabbit and the leader of the Joy Joy Gang. He has the Speed Boost ability, will throw bombs at Doug, and can use the cameras littered around the map to find his location.

  • Author Appeal: He has a stereotypical Italian-American accent. Vincent Livings is Italian himself.
  • Badass Boast:
  • Bondage Is Bad: Implied, his rap "Bad Rabbit" is riddled with sexual references and instances of sexual depravity.
    #### YouTube, Ima' get the RedTube views

    JACKRABBIT
  • Born Lucky: It's in his name, and he's quite formidable than the rest of the trio.
  • The Captain: Lucky is treated by Malak and the other gang members as the ringleader of the Joy Joy Gang.
  • The Chessmaster: Lucky uses the security cameras to catch Doug off-guard and see where they are.
  • Cute and Psycho: He may not look very threatening (except in Nightmare Mode), but Word of God describes him as being psychotic. The quotes listed on this page and his Image Song make this fact very evident.
  • Flash Step: He's the quickest member of the Joy Joy Gang, and he'll be right on Doug once a camera finds him. One of his jumpscares also involve him rapidly punching Doug to death.
  • Furry Reminder: During his second meeting with Doug, Lucky's nose twitches just like a real rabbit's.
  • Hair-Raising Hare: Invoked, he's a serial killer in a rabbit costume and is said by the creators to be the most psychotic.
  • Image Song: Bad Rabbit.
  • In a Single Bound: As seen in one of his jumpscares, Lucky can jump high if he needs to. This ability carries over to Joy Kill.
  • Meaningful Name: As he states in his Badass Boast, he's called "Lucky" because he never loses, and at the end of "Mascot Mayhem", he's proven right.
  • Narcissist: As seen in his Badass Boast and Image Song, Lucky's extremely arrogant, egotistical, and boastful.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: One of his kill animations is beating Doug senseless, and he also nearly kills Doug at the end of "Mascot Mayhem" before Malak intervenes.
  • Our Demons Are Different: E's notes reveal that while Lucky has a soul inside of him, it is not a human one (unlike the other minions of Malak). She can only describe Lucky as a "killing machine" built solely for "destruction and chaos".
  • Pink Is Erotic: According to the Creator, Vincent Livings, Lucky's bow tie is supposed to be pink (or magenta which is a mix of purple and pink). His lyrics to "Bad Rabbit" imply that he's a sexual deviant who mocks the listener by sending a gif of Lucky pleasuring himself. Yuck.
  • Psycho Pink: In addition to his pink/magenta bowtie, he is also a psychopath who just loves making his victims suffer.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: One of his kill animations shows him repeatedly pummeling Doug with his bare hands, all while chuckling in a sadistic manner.
  • Robotic Psychopath: This is what he truly is, a machine built for violence and chaos.
  • Sadist: Out of the whole trio, he has almost nothing good to say about Doug; he just wants to see him either suffer or die.
Lucky: "Where you goin', buddy? The fun's just startin'! Joy, joy, joy!"
  • Scary Teeth: His horrific human-like endo teeth are exposed after he is fried.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Relatively speaking, he's the shortest of the trio (not counting his ears), but is much more cunning than either of them.
  • Sinister Surveillance: He relies the most on the cameras to find Doug, and by then, you better hope you have his Speed Boost ready. Some of his clones also hang onto balloons to spot Doug more easily.
  • Slasher Smile: He already has one built into his "skin". His nightmare mode of exposing his teeth and gums just make it worse.
  • Sore Loser: As someone who brags about always having luck on their side, it isn't surprising to know that he gets really peeved when he loses at pretty much anything or is beaten by anyone. He best expresses this after being defeated as Joy Kill for the first time, only to crash into the control room and demand a rematch.
Joy Kill: "I'm Lucky the frickin' Rabbit. Nobody whacks Lucky. Nobody!"
  • Speed Blitz: He's capable of using Speed Boost as well.

Tropes applying to Penny the Chicken

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_10_07_235344.png
I don't b-b-b-bite, you know? Well.. Maybe just a little...
Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: Tara Strong

An animatronic chicken and the only female member of the Joy Joy Gang. She can glide across the map and throw eggs at Doug to stun him.

  • Affably Evil: She is by far the nicest member of the Joy Gang. This is shown in the message she leaves on a whiteboard, and that her rap has little to no swearing.
  • Ass Kicks You: Did you get caught by Penny? Congratulations, you get to see her soar in the air and crush you under her butt. Maybe she thinks you're an egg.
  • The Big Gal: Relatively speaking, she's the tallest confirmed animatronic (if you count her comb) out of the Joy Joy Gang, along with being "egg" shaped, and she's just as capable of being a threat to Doug.
  • Death from Above: If she doesn't see Doug for some time, she'll take to the sky until she's near him. You can easily see her if she's coming down, but you better move out of the way before she gets too close.
  • Decomposite Character: In the concept art, she and Mama Bear were planned to be one character known as Penny the Panda. The character was then scrapped, with her name being used for Penny the Chicken while her character design is used for Mama Bear.
  • Enemy Compassion: She's still has the sadistic, murderous, and psychotic tendencies of the other two, but she does show the most personal affection to humans compared to them (and probably the other monsters as well). Even Lucky lampshades on this fact.
Lucky: "Penny's got a soft for mortals. Me? Not so much."
  • Expy: Vince Livings confirmed that she's based on Chica the Chicken from Five Nights at Freddy's.
  • Eye Scream: Her frenzy form has her left eye dangling from the exposed one on wires. She is not pleased about this.
  • Feathered Fiend: She is a chicken who wants to kill you. Plain and simple.
  • Flying Flightless Bird: Evidently, nightmare animatronics aren't bound by such pedestrian limitations like gravity or realism, as Penny can fly around the area, and if you aren't fast enough, she'll fly onto you.
  • Genki Girl: She's this combined with some yandere traits. She constantly contemplates about interacting with Doug, almost to the point that just seeing him makes her go crazy.
  • Image Song: Always Near
  • Long-Range Fighter: She's able to shoot eggs that stun Doug at a fast rate.
  • The Mentally Disturbed: Compare to Lucky and Hangry's being straightforward rap music about themselves and what they'll do to the player, Penny's Image Song consists of Pop music describing her love for the player in a very stalkerish way. In-game, her behavior comes across as demented, if somewhat childish when referring to Doug.
  • Not in the Face!: Is very sensitive about her appearance and is furious that Doug triggering her Nightmare Mode made her "ugly".
  • Not Quite Flight: She's capable of hovering above the air for a while, increasing her speed for a bit.
  • Proj-egg-tile: She is able to throw eggs at the player that can stun them in place.
  • Stalker with a Crush: How she acts towards Doug, referring to him as "Squishy" and constantly attempting to get close to him. In the second zone, she even has a letter on a whiteboard concerning her interest in Doug. This stops once you zap her face off, though.
  • Tareme Eyes: Sports some in her song. It's every bit as horrific as you think it is.
  • Undignified Death: Her sole jumpscare involves sitting on you. It's about as weird as it sounds.
  • Visual Pun: She's a chicken that can throw eggs at Doug, and her entire body is egg-shaped.
  • Yandere: She loves humans the most out of the Joy Joy Gang, but that doesn't stop her from killing Doug for the sheer sake of it, equally willing to punish him as well for messing with her looks.
    • It's also implied that she's one for Lucky as well, albeit in a less murderous and more subtle manner.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Like the Dread Duckies and Reaper Nurses before her, she will stun Doug by throwing eggs at him. Unlike either of them, though, she has much further range to her throws as long as she has a clear shot of you.

Tropes applying to Hangry the Pig

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2021_10_07_234917.png
I haven't had a meal in forever! Are those RIBS?! You look delicious! Mind if I put a little BBQ sauce on you? I got my recipe.
Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: Chris Jay Alex

An animatronic pig and the muscle of the Joy Joy Gang. He can and will break through walls and closed doors when he's chasing Doug. However, running and breaking things down tires him out, which will stop a chase for a little bit.

  • Affably Evil: Appears to be one when not hungry, judging by some of his voice lines.
  • Barrier-Busting Blow: One of his main gimmicks, breaking through both closed doors and walls to pursue you. Players that aren't careful might be caught unaware by him suddenly coming out of the wall next to them.
  • The Brute: Hangry is the most physically capable animatronic out of the trio by busting down doors and walls to catch Doug.
  • Calling Your Attacks: He's prone to this if he's breaking stuff, often in a crazed frenzy.
    Hangry: "HANGRY PUNCH!"
    Hangry: "SMASH!"
  • Eating Machine: He's apparently capable of eating despite being an animatronic. It's also implied that he can only eat properly with the costume part of his mouth on given his anger about it (although he can still bite you with it).
  • Glasgow Grin: Gets an even bigger one in nightmare mode than Lucky's, this time with his whole mandible exposed.
  • Gluttonous Pig: Despite being an animatronic pig and thus lacking a stomach or taste buds, all Hangry cares about is eating Doug's ribs. He wastes no time in doing so if he catches Doug.
  • Horror Hunger: He's constantly hungry, and is extremely eager to eat Doug's ribs and any other meat he provides.
  • Hungry Menace: His primary motivation is to eat Doug, with ribs being his favorite food.
  • Image Song: The Notorious PIG, a pretty clear shoutout to The Notorious B.I.G..
  • Mighty Glacier: He’s quite slow, the slowest of the trio, but he can constantly bust through nearby walls and doors to get at Doug.
  • Mood-Swinger: His emotions depend on whether he sees Doug or not. He can go from apologizing about his mannerisms to going on a wild tangent about wanting to eat you.
  • Oh, Crap!: This is Hangry's reaction when he sees Doug press a button and realizes what it does just too late.
Hangry: "Uh oh, that ain't good! (he and his friends get electrocuted)"
  • Perverted Pig: Discussed, while Hangry himself isn't a perverted character, Bierce says Hangry reminds her of her ex-husband (or the men who have harassed her).
  • Pig Man: Invoked, he's a murderous animatronic in a pig costume who loves to eat ribs.
  • Punched Across the Room: At the end of "Mascot Mayhem", he throws Doug through the portal at a considerable distance.
  • Punny Name: His name is a portmanteau of the words "angry" and "hungry".
  • Sadist: Not as much as the other two since he's more focused on eating you (although that in itself could be sadistic given what he is), but he's still willing to join the gang in beating you like a bug while laughing like a maniac.
  • Sinister Swine: He seems friendly at first, but once he realizes that his favorite food is inside you, he becomes anything but that.
  • Stout Strength: He's the most heavyset member of the Joy Joy Gang, and he's capable of breaking down walls and doors easily to get to Doug. Even Bierce comments on how powerful Hangry looks.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He loves to eat ribs... anyone's ribs, and by that point, you ''don't'' want to get caught by him.

    Jocelyn

Jocelyn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jocelyn_screen2_6.png
Unauthorised intruder detected. Dispatching Joy Joy Gang.
Joy Joy Land's chief A.I. unit. While not a direct threat, she is the one responsible for controlling the park systems.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: She has the whole place under very tight, dysfunctional security, but is mostly following her program otherwise. Mostly.
  • All There in the Script: Her name is never mentioned in-game, but it can be found by looking through the credits and the game files.
  • Red Alert: She starts one throughout the whole facility once the self-destruct begins.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: Once Joy Kill has been pushed into the lava, Jocelyn will fly into a panic and activate the factory's self destruct system.
  • Sinister Surveillance: She's has dozens of cameras set throughout the park, allowing her to alert the Joy Joy Gang to Doug's presence.

    Joy Kill

Joy Kill

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/joy_kill_image.png
Voiced by: Chris Jay Alex (Lucky and Hangry Heads), Tara Strong (Penny Head)

A horrific mechanical monstrosity created from the underground remnants of the Joy Joy Gang. He serves as the boss enemy of "Mascot Mayhem".

  • Ambiguous Gender: Subverted. Despite being an amalgam of the Joy Joy Gang, which included both male and female personalities, Word of God stated that Joy Kill is a male.
  • All Your Powers Combined: He has Penny’s egg throwing ability and the ability to move to another platform by jumping, Hangry’s brute strength and hunger for flesh, and Lucky’s speed and sadism, completed with frickin' Eye Beams!
  • Battle Theme Music: Joy Kill.
  • Badass Boast: Gives one when Doug tries to use the crusher on them again. And then proceeds to destroy it.
  • Breath Weapon: Not only can they shoot lasers from their eyes, but they can also spew them right out of their mouths!
  • The Brute: Moreso than Hangry, as Joy Kill is more than capable of stomping Doug like a bug!
  • Came Back Strong: After being crushed into parts by Doug, Malak comes in and repurposed them into Joy Kill, much to his delight of his newfound power.
  • Determinator: Nothing can truly stop this thing from making you pay for what you did to them. Not even when you drop it into lava!
  • Eye Beam: He's capable of shooting lasers from the eyes of each head.
  • Fusion Dance: Is the combined form of all three members of the Joy Joy Gang.
  • Glowing Mechanical Eyes: While they still retain these from their previously separated yet damaged forms, they defiently compliment their new mechanical body.
  • Hero Killer: Successfully captures the protagonist and presents him to Malak.
  • Hope Spot: Think your about to escape and reach the portal after outrunning the joy joy clone hoard? Think Again.
  • Horror Hunger: He's just as willing to eat Doug as much as wanting to kill him, and Vince has stated in the 11th Q&A that Joy Kill likes to eat mortals.
  • Hostile Animatronics: A horrific fusion of three already unstable robots made to draw in and kill unfortunate souls, now forgoing any pretenses of civility and just full-on hunting Doug down. His body is far more blatantly mechanical than the individual Joy Joy Gang's, with only their heads and arms showing any traces of the mascots they're meant to look like.
  • Implacable Man: He's pretty much the Terminator except with animal heads and somehow even worse. He takes absolutely no hint of damage from anything you throw at him, from pistons to explosions to a HUGE PIT OF LAVA for goodness sake. And all this does is piss him off.
  • In a Single Bound: In compensation for his low agility, he can leap over to another part of the environment without trouble.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: His "I'm back!" line refers to him being revived. When it's used in the trailer for Chapter 4, it sounds more like he's referring to the long hiatus between chapters, and how the wait is finally over.
  • Meaningful Name: It's the only boss so far that manages to prevent Doug from escaping the nightmare realm for the first time, thus allowing his brutal beatdown and getting his mind invaded by Malak.
  • Mix-and-Match Critter:Part rabbit, part chicken, part pig, all machine.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: They have three arms in total.
  • Multiple Head Case: They retain the heads of all three animatronics, and each one still retains their original personality. Humorously, they will sometimes bicker with each other.
Joy Kill (Penny's head): Haha, look at me! You're in b-b-b-big trouble now, squishy!
Joy Kill (Hangry's head): Ha ha ho, I can eat way more ribs with this body!
Joy Kill (Lucky's head): Jeez Hangry, why does everything gotta be about food?
Joy Kill (Hangry's head): Sorry, I just get so hungry...
Joy Kill (Penny's head): Hey Hangry, I want to try one of his ribs too...
  • No-Sell: After coming back strong as Joy Kill, he can't be killed through getting crushed by the pistons anymore, to which he even lampshades this as Doug tries to do it again.
Joy Kill (Lucky's head): You think that's going to work on me now!? Don't make me laugh!
  • One-Winged Angel: Per Malak's words, as he is the Joy Joy Gang's final form (and their most dangerous one).
  • Project Blank: Joecelyn refers to them as Project Joykill.
  • Run or Die: Unlike most bosses, Joy Kill has no true kill method. Any time it seems he’s been escaped from or killed, he comes back.
  • SkeleBot 9000: While they have a very bulky endoskeleton, further analysis shows that they actually have robotic framing on their body that greatly resembles that of both a ribcage and a pelvis.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He likes to eat mortals, more so than any other foods. He probably inherited this hunger from Hangry.
  • Two Beings, One Body: Three beings, One body. Even though they are combined, each member of the Joy Joy Gang still retains control over their own respective limbs while gesturing and fighting. This is best shown when Joy Kill is formed for the first time.
  • Walking Spoiler: Before the release of Chapter 4, nobody knew what they looked like. And considering the circumstances that happen to cause them to appear, this shouldn't come as a surprise.

    Trigger Teddies

Trigger Teddies

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/normaltriggerteddy.png
Mama! Mama!
Unmasked Form
Nightmare Mode

Voiced by: Chris Jay Alex

One of the main enemies of "Bearly Buried". They are living bombs spawned by Mama Bear that explode on contact or when stunned.

What they lack in unique abilities, they make up for in sheer numbers, as more of them will only continue to spawn the longer Mama Bear remains active. Doug has to be careful not to stun them while they're too close to him.

  • Action Bomb: These teddy bear cubs explode upon catching Doug, or if he uses Primal Fear.
  • Alliterative Name: Trigger Teddies.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Unlike the other enemies, the Teddies' soul type is never elaborated on. While they do appear to be an extension of Mama Bear herself based on her boss form, it's still unclear whether they're formed from her many souls or from someone else's. In fact, it's never stated if they even have human souls or not.
  • Bears Are Bad News: They're not actual bears, but they still give off this vibe - not helped by their habit of exploding and eating humans.
  • Berserk Button: Unless you're Mama Bear, waking a teddy that is sleeping will guarantee your death very quickly.
  • Body Horror: In their Unmasked Form, their heads resemble rotting human skulls. Not to mention that they're missing their right eyes.
  • Creepy Child: They're Mama Bear's feral, violent, man-eating children.
  • Creepy Doll: Their unmasked forms are not pleasing to look at, as they essentially look and act like zombies.
  • Enfant Terrible: Even as young bears they're shown to be vicious, almost rabid, monsters that want to kill and eat the player.
  • Facial Horror: To be blunt, beneath their masks lays a face only a mother could love.
  • Gonk: Their doll heads are just so ugly!
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Using Primal Fear will blow up the teddies. This can kill you if you're too close.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Mama Bear mentions several times about the Teddies' appetite for humans, and given their behavior they likely would.
  • It Can Think: Their behavior in Zone 1 suggests that they're nothing but mindless suicide bombers that act like literal animals. Then they start trying to protect the ring pieces by running away with them, sometimes even baiting you with fake rings. They also display subtle amounts of self-preservation at times, such as climbing walls to avoid danger or separating from one another to avoid blowing each other up. Hell, they will sometimes wait for Doug near areas they last saw him in case he comes back.
  • Killer Teddy Bear: Obviously.
  • Leitmotif: Trigger Teddy Picnic.
  • Living Toy: They seem to be withering teddy bears with bear claws and human teeth, or at least until they show their unmasked form, which reveals they're baby dolls.
  • Meaningful Name: Trigger Teddies. They explode upon catching the player.
  • Oh, Crap!: Some of them can be seen trying to escape when the nightmare they live in starts collapsing.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: You know things are going downhill when, out of all the enemies in-game, suicidal, near-mindless bears start running away in fear.
  • Sleepyhead: In the first section, most of the teddies are asleep, and must be walked around to avoid waking them up.
  • Super-Deformed: While most teddy bears have heads that are larger than their bodies, these guys stand out because their heads are ovular in shape.
  • Too Many Babies: There's already a lot of them throughout the level, but Mama Bear will constantly spawn more if unstunned. Let her be, and the Teddies will begin infesting the entire level.
  • Tulpa: The secret notes in Zone 3 of "Bearly Buried" suggest that the Trigger Teddies represent the teddy bear Doug's mother gave him for his fifth birthday.
  • The Unintelligible: Since they're essentially infants, they babble and growl meaninglessly. They can, however, say, "Mama".
  • Wall Crawl: They're shown to do this at the end of the level, with many of them clinging to the walls and ceilings while Mama Bear breaks through the cabin.
  • Weaponized Offspring: Mama Bear uses them as a way of attacking the player without needing to catch up.
  • Zombie Gait: Since they're teddy bears, the way they move while idle or running is wobbly and erratic, similar to zombies.

    Mama Bear

Mama Bear

"I'm here. How sweet. You brought a new companion from my babies to play with?"

Nightmare Mode

Mega Mama

Voiced by: Tara Strong

The overarching enemy of "Bearly Buried". She also acts as the boss on the level. Malak regularly brings mortals to Mama Bear for their execution, implicitly to collect their souls after she and her babies have eaten their bodies.

Mama Bear is more of a passive presence on the map, slowly roaming while spawning Trigger Teddies for as long as she isn’t stunned. Getting too close to her will cause Doug's vision to become blurry, and she will not hesitate to attack him herself either.

  • Abusive Mom: To the Trigger Teddies, which is a given due to her creation from the souls of such. While she does care for them to some extant, a lot of the time, she orders them around instead. More often than not, she will outright have them do her dirty work, despite knowing full well that they will die doing so. She's quite willing to just replace said babies once that happens.
    • It's also implied in her Makeship description that she only loves them because they're incapable of either rebelling or failing her, viewing children who do either as disappointments.
Makeship Description: "Need an overprotective parent? Dark Deception's Mama Bear is here and ready to adopt you as one of her "babies"! With Mama Bear around, there's no such thing as personal privacy. You can feel her disapproving parental stare from anywhere in your home or office! Definitely don't talk back and remember that mother always knows best."
  • Affably Evil: Despite being an amalgamation of the many souls belonging to abusive mothers, she always talks in a calm, motherly tone and shows to be quite endearing to her babies, Malak, and even Doug in her own twisted and creepy way. Justified as each soul that comprises Mama Bear's current personality is very likely different in personality and viewpoint.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She loves to refer to Malak as "Dear Malak", much to his chagrin.
  • Albinos Are Freaks: Unlike her babies which have brown fur, her fur is white, making her resemble a spirit bear. But while this is just her suit, she is by all means a freak.
  • Battle Theme Music: Maternal Instinct.
  • Bears Are Bad News: While not an actual bear, her costume is based on a spirit bear and she's seen as an executioner for Malak when he needs to get rid of his enemies.
  • Becoming the Mask: She apparently wears the bear costume because she views herself as a Mama Bear, at least going by Word of God.
  • Body Horror: She has a large, unstitched tear in her stomach, the interior of which is filled with red stuffing reminiscent of organs. Not to mention her babies come out of it.
    • It gets worse once she mutates. That cotton is removed to reveal dozens of Trigger Teddies making up her stomach. That aside, her arms become elongated and bulbous, and one arm even ends in an organic mouth with ears.
  • Body of Bodies: At least in her mutated form. Dozens of Trigger Teddies are stuffed in her abdomen, and presumably other parts of her body as well.
  • Cold Ham: Despite speaking in a serene yet monotone voice, she definitely has her dramatic moments. Special note goes to her Pre-Asskicking One-Liner after she and her babies ambush Doug in the tunnels.
Mama Bear: "Why the rush? Please, stay for dinner."
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: She has two navy blue eyes that will stare right into your soul.
  • Creepily Long Arms: After plunging herself into a poll of toxins, her arms become elongated and segmented with each one having a different type of hand. Her right hand is a massive clawed paw, while her left one has a blind bear head with a gummed fanged maw and ears.
  • Creepy Monotone: For some reason, she constantly speaks in a sweet, but very calm voice. This makes her desires to kill Doug all the more jarring and sinister.
  • Decomposite Character: In the concept art, she and Penny the Chicken were planned to be one character known as Penny the Panda. The character was then scrapped, with her character design being used for Mama Bear, while her name is given to Penny the Chicken.
  • Demon of Human Origin: Played with. She is described by E as an amalgamation of the souls of those that sabotaged and ruined their children's lives, and as the embodiment of the twisted love of abusive mothers.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Never goes above a calm tone of voice, even as she commands her babies to rip Doug to shreds.
  • Evil Matriarch: Oh boy, is she not? Besides ordering her Trigger Teddies into doing whatever she wants, she's also not above extending her "love" to her potential victims, chewing them out if they try to do anything she doesn't like.
  • The Executioner: It may not be obvious at first, but this is actually her job in Malak's armada. She is the one who will make the demon's unwanted guest disappear. And considering not only the large number of soul shards but also the fact the cave is filled with screaming faces and skeletal remains, Mama Bear is really good at it.
  • The Faceless: Unlike the Trigger Teddies, we never actually find out who she really looks like underneath. Considering what her spawn look like unmasked, and what we see of her fluffy insides, this is probably for the better.
  • Faster Than They Look: As pointed out in one of the death tips, Mama Bear, despite her fat build and slow movement speed, can and will sprint after you if she gets the chance to.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: In her first boss fight, she will throw rocks at you. You need to grab these rocks and throw them back at her head to win. You’ll also need to blow up her Trigger Teddies while she’s standing on them to knock her back into the acid pit in her final boss fight.
  • Humanoid Abomination: At first she just looks like a giant teddy bear who spawns smaller explosive teddies but then you find spare heads and costumes of her in her bedroom, revealing that she's something else entirely. On top of that, she can make the screen fill with static with her mere presence and turn into a more monstrous form. Then there are the babies themselves who have creepy doll heads under their plush exteriors...
  • Hypocrite: She chews out Doug for destroying her precious babies. This would probably be slightly more understandable if she didn't send the same babies out to suicide-bomb him. This does keep in line with who she's comprised of though.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Likely since she orders her children to drop Doug in the kitchen and wears blood around her mouth like lipstick.
  • Interface Screw: Being near her causes the screen to blur, with the effect intensifying the closer you are.
  • Kevlard: She can withstand a lot of damage from her own Trigger Teddies.
  • Killer Teddy Bear: Again.
  • Killing Intent: The Interface Screw mentioned above is caused by Mama Bear's bloodlust, as explained in one of the game over screens.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Her presence marks the turning point of the story where it becomes a full-fledged horror story, as Doug is stripped of his powers and he must evade the Trigger Teddies through stealth.
  • Lack of Empathy: She's shows little concern to any of her babies dying outside a few instances. If anything, she supports their behavior as long as they help kill Doug.
  • Large and in Charge: She's the largest of the standard enemies, and she also leads the Trigger Teddies she makes.
  • Living Toy: She's an abnormally large teddy bear.
  • Mama Bear: It's literally her name, and she seems to care for the Trigger Teddies to the point that she'll assist them in helping to kill Doug, on top of logically being very upset about Doug killing them through Primal Fear. She even has both her and the Teddies wear bear costumes because of this trope.
  • Mind Hive: She said to be an amalgamation of human souls, potentially suggesting she could be some kind of fusion.
  • Mook Maker: She has the ability to spawn Trigger Teddies from her stomach to aid her in killing her prey.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: After looking at those spare suits, we still don't know what lies beneath that mask. Considering what her babies look like, it is safe to say it would not be a pretty sight.
  • One-Winged Angel: When Doug pushes her far enough she becomes Mega Mama, a giant with long, segmented arms ending in either a claw or a fanged maw. In this form, she can also turn into a giant ball of spikes. The most striking characteristic, however, is the open stomach changes from red stuffing to a mass of Trigger Teddies within her unstitched wound.
  • Rolling Attack: Her second boss battle combines this with Spike Balls of Doom, turning herself into a rolling spiked ball in an attempt to run Doug over.
  • Shapeshifter: She can change her form while in contact with the waste pools in the tunnels. Her forms can range from giant, flying heads, to fat plushies with segmented arms.
  • Shout-Out: If Doug opens a door in the attic, he's met with Mama Bear's disembodied head flying right at him. Alternatively, it could be a nod to this.
  • Stout Strength: She's quite beefy but she's still a bear who's not to be messed with. Even in her normal form, she can break an entire cave wall with just one wipe of her paws. Her form in the final fight is one of the largest and strongest, as she can only be defeated by her own Trigger Teddies.
  • Sugary Malice: She has a sweet, calm voice and rarely raises her voice above conversational range. Body Horror aside, she's a reasonably cute teddy bear in a bow and tutu. She also has a surprisingly dainty run for something so big. She and her children also intend to kill and eat Doug if they catch him. Then there's the fact she's heavily implied to look like something else under the teddy bear shell.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: She has a pink bow and tutu.
  • Tulpa: She's heavily implied to be the representation of Doug's abusive mother, who may now be one of the souls that comprise Mama Bear.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Once Doug defeats her again and takes the last ring piece, she goes absolutely ballistic, devouring and/or smashing anything in her path until Doug is dead, including her own babies and cabin. As if to emphasize her point, her monster hand constantly shrieks and snarls at Doug while chasing him.
  • Villain in a White Suit: A white bear suit in this case.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Despite how serene and calm she normally is, she clearly seems to have her breaking points. Once Doug had successfully stolen all of her soul shards, gotten back most of the ring pieces, and blew up a large number of babies, she is very understandably enraged. And it gets even worse once she is beaten for a second time, and goes on a full-on rampage.
  • We Have Reserves: She quite literally does in regards to the Trigger Teddies. She even points this out if Doug kills too many of them.
Mama Bear: "Don't worry. I have plenty more."
Mama Bear: "My babies are infinite!"
  • Wolverine Claws: Has retractable claws that she's very willing to slash you apart with. She unsheathes them when she gets close enough and chases you.

Chapter 5: Fated Conclusion

    Mannequins
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/red_mannequins.png
Voiced by: N/A
A group of hostile living mannequins who make their home within a vast mall, and the main enemies of "Holiday Horror". They consist of two variants: the White Mannequins and the Red Stalkers.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: As expected from beings made of plastic. While they are completely nude, they completely lack any form of nipples or genitals.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: More like a spike below shoulders, and hips. If you thought the Monkeys had dexterity issues, these guys take it to a whole new level!
  • Bizarre Alien Limbs: Both sexes have large spikes replacing the lower halves of each limb. The males also have an additional set of limbs on their sides, with one arm just being a blunt spike.
  • Fan Disservice: Both genders are topless and are well-built to boot, but this is offset by both their spiky limbs and (for the females anyway) their inhuman heads.
  • The Faceless: They can't have faces, because they don't have proper heads!
  • Hive Mind: They don't really have separate minds (or minds of their own) to speak of, as they're all controlled by the Puppet King.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Despite not having proper feet, they are stated to be one of the fastest enemies in the game.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: The males have an extra pair of arms on their sides, and they're just as willing to stab you with them.
  • Murderous Mannequin: In case the spikes didn't tip you off, these guys are hostile.
  • Non-Human Head: They don't even have proper heads! One is just a cone, and the other is simply a stump!

    Puppet King

"Control is an illusion. There is always a master."
Voiced by: William Christopher Stephens
A strange figure who seems to be pulling the strings of his domain.
  • Black Cloak: He wears one that conceals most of his body.
  • Empty Eyes: Darkness is the only thing visible beyond those peepers.
  • Hive King: He is the commander of the mannequins, and controls them.
  • Meaningful Name: The Puppet King rules over the Mannequins, using them as puppets. But he's also a metaphorical Puppet King - for all his power over the Mannequins, he's still subservient to Malak.
  • White Mask of Doom: He wears one over his face and a few more around his neck.

    Dark Star

"Even in hell, the show must go on."
Voiced by: Adriana Figueroa
One of the denizens of a prison, serving as Warden and gameshow hostess alike.

Spoiler Characters

    "E"

"Elise Houser"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flashback_elise.png
"You pretend we don't even exist. Even if you hate me now, Tammy needs you."

Voiced by: Natasha Lloyd

Another visitor to the dimensions, possibly the girl who left the tablet for Bierce. She is actually Doug's dead wife. She leaves notes discussing the enemies in each level for Doug (and the player) to find.

  • Abusive Mom: Implied, considering she was drawn towards Mama Bear, a being who is a massive collection of that very soul type.
  • Action Survivor: She managed to escape (almost) all the monsters Doug had to face. Not without a price though...
  • Amulet of Dependency: Found an Artifact that lets her move between realms without the use of Portals, though she is forced to follow Malak's footsteps. It heals her body on use and lets her escape from trouble... at the small cost of her soul.
  • Doomed Predecessor: She is stated to be one of Doug, but this is ultimately subverted as she was able to escape by using a relic she found in the hotel.
  • Hypocrite: Assuming that she is an Abusive Mom, her yelling at Doug for his treatment towards Tammy is certainly the pot calling the kettle black.
  • Identity Amnesia: She really doesn't remember that much about her past, although she does seem to learn a few things as continues progressing.
  • Shear Menace: She tried to stab her husband with a pair of scissors after she had gotten into a fight with him.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: She is somehow able to sense what the monsters truly are and piece together why they became what they were currently. And she can do all of this just by observing them.

    The Blue Orb

Tammy Houser

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_orb.png
"No... It's not time yet. I'll help you. Escape."

Ghost Form

Voiced by: Amiee Smith

A peculiar blue orb that helps Doug escape from Malak's clutches in "Bearly Buried". She is later revealed to actually be the ghost of Tammy.

  • Ambiguously Evil: What little we know about them is that they save Doug from Malak's grasp when Bierce couldn't. However, they say it's "Not time yet.", implying that they plan or at least expect Doug to die at some point. What they intend has yet to be revealed. They don't come off as malicious and help Doug escape a horrid fate and even regain the ring pieces. They come off like angelic being passing judgment, and with the implication that they're his daughter, who last we saw may have a few issues with his behavior, it's difficult to say. Given the last time we see Tammy, it's in Doug's own mind-raped, guilt-wracked head, it's tough to say if that Tammy was even the real deal at all.
  • Blue Is Heroic: She is primarily blue in color, and is on the same side as the protagonist.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The quote above is immediately followed by the blasting the Trigger Teddies grabbing Doug with a surge of blue lightning.
  • Came Back Wrong: Malak is able to bring back from the dead, or at least in Doug's mind. But by doing say, he turns her into a vengeful wraith.
  • Significant Double Casting: Shares the same voice actor as Tammy Hauser. The file names for their lines also reveal that it's Tammy.
  • The Worf Effect: Whoever they are, they immediately demonstrate their ability by obliterating a group of Trigger Teddies and dispelling Malak's hold on Doug without the former even getting the slightest hint of their presence.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's incredibly difficult to discuss them at length without spoiling something.

Other Characters

    Edgar

    Victor

    Mistress

    Doug's Mother
  • Abusive Parent: A secret document found in Bearly Buried has her see Doug as nothing more than a burden and a reminder of her horrible husband. Doug didn't even want to visit her again when his wife brought the question up.
