The moment people come to know love, they run the risk of carrying hate.

The man controlling Akatsuki from the shadows.

In childhood he was a member of Kakashi's team. Obito Uchiha was the Black Sheep of the Uchiha clan with a reputation for being perpetually late and untalented. He was crushed by a landslide while saving Kakashi, and had Rin remove his left Sharingan to give to Kakashi, who had lost an eye protecting him earlier. After this, he was believed to be dead.

But he survived; Obito was rescued by an elderly Madara Uchiha, who replaced the damaged half of his body with tissue from the Living Statue of Hashirama. Obito initially refused to aid Madara in his Eye of the Moon plan, but after witnessing Rin's death he returned and received his training. After Madara's death, Obito cast aside his name and took up Madara's as an alias, meeting with Nagato - who had been given Madara's Rinnegan eyes - and proposing an alliance, thus establishing the second iteration of the Akatsuki. He took control of the Fourth Mizukage, Yagura, and personally recruited Kisame from the Hidden Mist into the Akatsuki. Twelve years before the start of the series, he attacked Konoha and unleashed the Nine-Tailed Fox from its jinchuuriki, Kushina Uzumaki, indirectly causing her death and that of her husband Minato Namikaze. Eight years later he recruited Itachi Uchiha into the Akatsuki and assisted him in slaughtering the Uchiha clan, and at some point, met with Danzo.

Taking on the moniker "Tobi", he was introduced as Zetsu's underling and a replacement partner for Deidara after Sasori's death. Tobi presented himself as a zany comic relief Joke Character, being constantly beaten up by Deidara, but possessed intangibility and constantly wore an orange, spiral-patterned mask that hid his true identity. He was seemingly killed when Deidara committed suicide, but returned claiming to be Madara Uchiha. Tobi subsequently dropped the goofy facade and revealed Itachi's true motives to Sasuke, further driving him down the path of revenge. He enlisted Taka as Akatsuki associates, and revealed the existence of the Sage of the Six Paths to Naruto before declaring war on the entire Ninja World. To this end, he reluctantly allied himself with Kabuto, killed Konan in a fight, stole the Rinnegan, revived the Jinchuuriki to serve as his Six Paths of Pain, and unleashed his army of White Zetsu, all in the name of resurrecting the Ten Tailed Beast in order to become its Jinchuuriki and take over the world by hypnotizing everyone. He got into a fight that was initially just against Naruto and Bee, but eventually expanded to the entire Shinobi Alliance, while backed up by the reanimated Madara and an incomplete Ten-Tails. Eventually Obito became its Jinchuuriki but was defeated by the entire alliance and forced to see the error of his ways by Naruto, deciding to sacrifice himself to revive those killed in the war. Madara, seeing his chance, forced Obito to instead fully resurrect him and took the Ten-Tails for himself.

The fight escalated to a whole new level when Madara actually succeeded in the Infinite Tsukuyomi but was forced by Black Zetsu to transform into the more dangerous progenitor of chakra, Kaguya ĹŚtsutsuki. Naruto's new abilities allowed him to revive Obito, if only temporarily. With his former attempt to atone now impossible, he devoted himself to doing what he could to help against Kaguya. Thanks to Obito's efforts, Team 7 was able to stay together and alive against Kaguya's techniques, but ultimately Obito was forced to give up his life to save his redeemer, Naruto, and his friend, Kakashi. His spirit then briefly returned to inhabit Kakashi's body and proved instrumental in finally taking down the goddess. After a final farewell between the two friends, Obito at last moved on to the afterlife to be with his long-lost love, Rin.

Favorite words(Сhild): "teamwork" and "comrade"

His hobby is accompanying "Deidara-senpai".
Favorite phrase: "Secret"
Note that they are all from his goofy facade.

    A - B
  • Aborted Declaration of Love: Obito decides against telling Rin that he is in love with her before he "dies".
  • Achilles' Heel:
    • The fact that his and Kakashi's Sharingan are using the same dimension for Kamui enabled the heroes to hit him a few times.
    • He can't use Kamui on others at the same time he's using it on himself for intangibility. This leads to several occasions where he's about to touch an opponent (necessary for using Kamui on others) only to have to pass through them to evade an attack from a third party.
    • After becoming the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki, he's able to negate any ninjutsu, including Edo Tensei. However, he can't cancel out senjutsu/Sage techniques, which allowed Naruto to injure him. As a jinchuruki he also loses the ability to pass through things with Kamui, making it easier than before to hit him.
  • Adaptational Badass: During his climactic fight with Kakashi, Obito was defeated relatively quickly after a brief hand-to-hand skirmish. The anime expands on this by having Obito put up a much tougher fight, even having Kakashi on the backfoot at numerous points.
  • Adaptational Curves: When he goes shirtless from becoming the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki, the anime gives him a noticeable six-pack, while he was merely trim in the manga.
  • Adaptation-Induced Plot Hole:
    • In the manga before disclosure of his true personality, Obito's right eye wasn't shown whilst he uses Kamui. At the moment of passing through something or absorption of anyone into his dimensions, his right eye was closed behind a mask or just was out of sight of the reader. However, the anime becomes very sloppy with this, especially during battles with his participation. It comes to a point when in the battle with Konan, Obito had tried to absorb himself in his dimension, while we see his right eye without Mangekyou Sharingan. While in the manga his eye in this moment was closed from the readers viewpoint by Obito's hand.
    • In the anime Obito can suck Fu into his Pocket Dimension without touching him, while in the manga it was not clear if he touched him or not and it was later explicitly stated to require physical contact, which was exactly why Minato was able to beat him.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Surprisingly enough, considering how evil (and tragic, but mainly evil) he already was.
    • While in the manga his manipulation of Nagato was obvious, it was not concrete whether he had something to do with to the tragedy that happened to Nagato or not. While in the anime it was openly shown that he knew about the trap for Nagato, Konan and Yahiko and to prevent any possibility of salvation for them, he killed other members of the Akatsuki, who wanted to warn them of the danger. For whatever it was worth, he also promised said victims he would bring them back in the Infinite Tsukyomi, out of respect for their loyalty to and love for their teammates.
    • In the anime during the massacre of the Uchiha clan, he kills Itachi's girlfriend Izumi. However, in the Itachi Shinden novels, Itachi himself kills Izumi with the help of Tsukiyomi.
  • Afterlife Antechamber: When he truly dies he finds himself in one, his appearence reverted to how he looked before he fell to the Uchiha's curse, and is greeted by Rin. Being in said chamber is also part of what allows him to give Kakashi a final bit of help from beyond the grave before moving on to the true afterlife with Rin.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Obito gets this treatment towards the end of the confrontation with him.
  • Alien Blood: We've seen blood in this series. When he cuts off his arm, it's not human blood. It's plant matter.
  • Almighty Idiot: His initial inability to control the Ten Tails results in it almost tearing his psyche to pieces, to the point where when Minato tells Obito to stop, the guy doesn't even recognize his own name.
Minato: Stop it, Obito... That's enough!
    Obito: O... Bi... To...?
  • Almighty Janitor: He is one of the strongest and most dangerous people in the world and is the undercover leader of one of the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world, but considering that Missing-nins don't have ranks anymore, Obito didn't rise higher than the rank of Chunin.
  • Alternate Dimension: Obito's unique Kamui ability leaves him in a near-constant state of dimensional flux in-between reality and somewhere else, meaning it’s almost impossible to catch or hit him.
  • Always Someone Better: In childhood Kakashi was this for him... over and over and over...
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: As the Jinchuuriki of the Ten-Tails, he has unnatural greyish white skin.
  • Ambiguously Related: There are implications that Obito is one of Madara's direct descendants. When he met Madara for the first time, he refers to the elder Uchiha as his "forefather", though it is unclear if Obito was being literal or metaphorical, as the term "forefather" could refer to Madara's former status as leader of the Uchiha Clan. Not helping matters is that Obito's hairstyle resembles Madara's whenever he let his hair grow out.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Obito has lost four arms over the course of the story. The first was his real arm which was crushed by a boulder. The second he lost in the battle with Minato, the third he removed himself as it was infected with flesh-eating beetles, and the fourth he lost in the battle with Konan. Since most of these arms were Zetsu tissue he got new ones before long.
  • Antagonist Abilities: Intangibility, Villain Teleportation, Hyperspace Arsenal, Mind Rape, Space Master and Reality Warper.
  • Anti-Villain:
    • Starts out as a lonely heartwarming orphan like Naruto but gets crushed by the death of the person he loved the most in a brutal war scheme which leads him to hate the world and try to change it through an Assimilation Plot. He may have committed several atrocities but in a world filled with child soldiers and senseless conflicts his goals appeal to him as the only solution to end suffering and reunite himself and other people with their deceased loved ones.
    • His internal conflict regarding his evil actions in the face of his former idealism is the primary reason he is defeated; if he didn't regret his actions deep down or had completely given up on the love he held for his comrades then he would have killed Naruto and completed his plan a long time ago instead of playing Complexity Addiction and debating the beliefs of the protagonist. This is also the reason why the Sword of Nunoboko (the sword that is fueled by the owner's confidence), was eventually broken, which led to his final defeat. It's even lampshaded by Kakashi at one point. He eventually pulls a Heel–Face Turn when he attacks Madara and declares he is "Obito Uchiha" and not Madara.
  • Appendage Assimilation: Tobi can regrow his arms using the Hashirama clone, and can swap out eyes as needed. This is because half his body was crushed by a boulder and replaced with Zetsu cells, and he gave his original left eye to Kakashi.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Was this to Minato, who he ends up causing the death of. However, unlike most examples of this trope, his teacher, when they faced off, never even knew that he had turned evil, or that he was even alive.
  • Arch-Enemy:
    • He’s one to Naruto. Obito was responsible for the Nine-Tails attack on Konoha and therefore the deaths of Naruto's mother and father, as well as Naruto's life as a JinchĹ«riki, Obito even has a resemblance to Naruto and has a lot similarities to him as well.
    • He’s also one to Kakashi, who, after realizing who he is, what he's done, and having the sense knocked back into him by Naruto, saw it as his duty to end Obito's life. Obito was aware of this, and purposely made himself a Duel Boss for Kakashi to manipulate him into taking out the seal placed on his heart.
  • Artificial Limbs: He lost his right arm and leg, but they were replaced with implanted cells from the First Hokage. As a result, he can regrow the limbs mid-battle, which has resulted him frequently sacrificing his right arm.
  • Assimilation Plot: His main goal is to create an illusion so that everyone can be a winner, and tragedies such as Rin's death over a pointless conflict, would never come to happen again.
  • The Atoner: After his Heel–Face Turn, he tries to redeem himself by restoring the lives of those who died in the war (though he is stopped from doing this by Black Zetsu), by saving Naruto and then asking Sakura to destroy the Rinnegan. He was also pretty much the only reason why Team 7 survived and can fight back against the villains: He prevented Madara from getting the other half of Kurama then saved Naruto's life and gave him the chakra of Shukaku and Gyuuki, which allowed him to receive a Next Tier Power-Up from the Sage of the Six Paths. He uses his Kamui and Sakura's help to rescue Sasuke from one of Kaguya's dimensions. He then finally dies protecting Naruto and Kakashi from Kaguya's attack, with his spirit giving Kakashi a more powerful set of Sharingan before parting to the afterlife; that double Kamui is what ultimately allows Team 7 to get an opening on Kaguya and seal her again.
  • Aura Vision: His Sharingan allows him to see chakra and even discern chakra type.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: In the battle with Fuu and Torune, he quickly determines which clans they're from and how their respective jutsu works. Also in a battle with Kaguya, he from the first sight determines how her ability works and how to get into her dimension.
  • Awful Truth: Just before Black Zetsu takes him over, he learns that Madara was behind Rin's death and was thus responsible for his Start of Darkness.
  • Ax-Crazy: Was a horrifying example of the trope when he slaughtered the Hidden Mist troops who were responsible for Rin's death - and this from a 14-year-old. He's calmed down somewhat as an adult, though his insanity remains. At least up until his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Backup from Otherworld: He dies saving Naruto and Kakashi, with his body turning to ash. He then uses his Kamui ability to teleport out of the Otherworld, without a physical body, to give Kakashi his chakra, which allows the Copy Ninja to finally have access to not only two Sharingan, but two Mangekyou Sharingan, which in turn gives him access to Susanoo, which is then essential to Kaguya's defeat.
  • Badass Boast: Quite a few, honestly. No surprise, considering he's the Big Bad.
"... If you want to see what's under my mask... You're gonna have to work for it. Eight-Tails... Nine-Tails... I will capture you both... And complete the Moon's Eye!"

"I am Madara Uchiha, and I possess the power of Hashirama Senju! I am unique! I am the second Sage of the Six Paths!"
  • Badass Longcoat: Both his Akatsuki uniform and his Shinobi World War gear.
  • Badass Transplant:
    • His entire right half was essentially replaced or strengthened with tissue grown from Hashirama's cells, which grants him great vitality and immense chakra reserves (which presumably allows him to constantly use his Mangekyo Sharingan with minimal chakra drain and no side effects to his eyes), regeneration on the right side of his body, Super-Strength and the First Hokage's legendary Wood Release.
    • He takes one of Nagato's Rinnegan eyes in order to summon and control the Gedo Statue at will, though he admits he could barely control just one eye and so couldn't utilize the full extent of the Six Paths of Pain.
  • Bait the Dog: At first, Tobi seems to be a silly, likeable, eager-to-please Butt-Monkey with a 'lollipop mask' who clearly doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the Akatsuki. It doesn't last.
  • Barefoot Sage: Combines with Magical Barefooter when he becomes the Ten Tails' Jinchuuriki.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: After his Heel–Face Turn he thinks that for his crimes he's unworthy to ever see Rin again in the afterlife. Doesn't end up being the case, however.
  • Barrier Warrior: His usage of Uchiha Kaenjin (Uchiha Flame Formation) makes him one. Doubles as Playing with Fire.
  • Batman Gambit:
    • He pulls off such a gambit to extract Kurama out of Kushina. He knows that during childbirth the seal trapping Kurama inside of Kushina will be weakened, so he takes Naruto hostage and uses Minato's Papa Wolf instincts to separate him from Kushina long enough to break the seal.
    • Makes another one during the Fourth Shinobi World War to lure Naruto out of hiding. He learned from Kisame that Naruto can feel the evil intentions of adversaries so he uses the ability of his Voluntary Shapeshifting army of Zetsu to, at night, strike back at opponents. In this way he sows discord in the Alliance army and forces their use of Naruto on the battlefield, since he's the only one who can counteract this strategy through his new sensory abilities.
  • The Beastmaster: Obito's appearance after becoming the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki, though incomplete, is still strangely more attuned to the beast-like nature of the God Tree, and unlike any other Jinchuuriki transformation, including the Sage of The Six Paths, and Madara.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: After a fashion. That’s why his identity is such a shock to Kakashi; the young, kind-hearted, idealistic Obito develops into somebody who is apparently perfectly willing to kill thousands to maintain those ideals through rewriting a Crapsack World reality. Naruto eventually makes him understand this and change for the better.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: During his Battle in the Center of the Mind, what is implied to be the will of the Ten Tails tries to sway him back to performing the Infinite Tsukyomi by giving him what he seeks, a world where he has his team back, Rin is alive and is everything he wanted her to be. The effect is clearly more nightmarish than comforting.
Fake Rin: Now come here, come on. I won't ever ignore you.
  • Becoming the Mask: He chose alternatively to be Madara Uchiha or a faceless "no one", presumably to forget about his past. This probably made it a lot easier for the former idealist to commit such atrocities. During their mental battle, Naruto calls out Obito on trying to run away from everything that he was before by becoming Tobi and committing atrocities in the name of world peace. Naruto even describes it as a mask Obito is wearing. However, it takes a while for him to successfully discard his identity as Tobi, accepting his place as Obito Uchiha once more.
  • Believing Their Own Lies: His true feelings and doubts about his path are so buried/repressed in his psyche that it takes a mostly word-based Battle in the Center of the Mind for him to even realize they are there, let alone accept them.
  • BFS: After becoming the Jinchuuriki of the Ten Tails, he can shape his black orbs into the Sword of Nunoboko, a legendary blade used by the Sage of the Six Paths.
  • Big Bad: He is one of the main antagonists of the franchise, holding the Big Bad title for the majority of Shippuden. Kurama's rampage in Konoha, which led to him being sealed inside of Naruto, the destruction of the Uchiha Clan, which led to Sasuke becoming obsessed with revenge on Itachi, Kirigakure's era as the "Bloody Mist" due to the 4th Mizukage being controlled via Genjutsu, Nagato's transformation into Pain, the actions of the Akatsuki to capture the Bijuu, and the start of the Fourth Shinobi World War? Obito had a hand in every single one of these events. While he pulls a Heel–Face Turn and loses the Big Bad role to Madara and Kaguya, his actions and prominence cement his place as the overarching villain of the series.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate:
    • Kabuto forces Tobi into an alliance by blackmailing him with Madara's body, providing him with an army of Edo Tensei soldiers. Unfortunately, Kabuto decides to blow his cover anyways by reviving Madara, losing any control he had over Obito, and is soon after defeated by Sasuke and Itachi.
    • Obito is also this with Madara, as while Obito was the active instigator of the Fourth Shinobi World War Madara was the one who mentored him and convinced him to complete the Moon Eye plan. Once Madara is resurrected by Kabuto they form a proper Duumvirate, Obito having dropped any pretenses of being The Dragon to Madara. Obito retakes the Big Bad position in full after becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki, only to be defeated by Naruto and pull a Heel–Face Turn against Madara.
  • Big Bad Ensemble:
    • Alternatively competed with Orochimaru and Danzo for most of Shippuden, before taking the reins once the Uchiha brothers freed it from competitors.
    • For the entire franchise as a whole he’s this with Madara (his master that brought him into the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan, and who Obito is actively hijacking the plan from throughout the series) and Kaguya (who is the Greater-Scope Villain of the series, as well as being indirectly responsible for everything through her Dragon, Black Zetsu).
  • Big Damn Heroes: Obito manages to steal this moment, for if he did not turn against Madara at the last moment, and prevent him from taking his Rinnegan, and Yin Kurama, all would have been lost. He also saves Naruto and Sakura respectively from Madara's wrath. He later on does it again in what doubles as a Dying Moment of Awesome with him saving both Naruto and Kakshi's life. And even then, he manages to do it a third time, by teleporting from the afterlife itself to give Kakashi his dual Magenkyo Sharingan.
  • Bishōnen Line: He forces himself across it just before the Ten-Tails has destroyed his mind.
  • Black Cloak: He wears one from time to time.
  • Black Sheep: He was this during his childhood for his clan, either because he was an untalented idiot coming from one of the most feared and powerful clans in the ninja world or because he didn't display the usual attitude of It's All About Me that is rampant among the clan.
  • Blatant Lies: "I didn't unleash the Nine-Tails on Konoha, it was a natural disaster."
  • Bloodbath Villain Origin: After seeing his teammate and love interest Rin killed by Kakashi, he loses it in a violent and brutal display of primal fury and goes about slaughtering the enemy ninja who drove the two into that position in the first place. Thus, opening the path to his career as Tobi.
  • Blood from the Mouth: When Kakashi attacks his body parts while within Kamui and, later, after Kakashi impales him with a Raikiri-enhanced kunai.
  • Boring, but Practical: His fighting style on average simply involves using his intangibility to frustrate and tire his opponents before sucking them into his other dimension. No flash, very efficient.
  • Body Horror: He goes through this when he becomes the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki until he gains control over its power. It happens on two levels - his physical body starts to look like the actual Ten Tails, while his mental self is torn apart piece-by-piece. It starts tearing his head in two before he reasserts control.
  • Breaking Lecture: He loves them. In fact, in almost every conversation with anyone, he aspires to give at least one such lecture his opponents to break their will.
    • His first such lecture he gave to Nagato (posing as Madara) about how this world sucks, how people of his nature are not able to understand each other and how if he joined him, he could change everything, but Yahiko prevented him from doing so.
    • Much later he gave one to Konan, about how he was the one who cited to Yahiko the creation of Akatsuki and how he was the one who gave the Rinnegan to Nagato to undermine her will to win, and later gave one more. See "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
    • Also gave several to Kakashi, about how he wants to create a world where "heroes don't stand over graves apologizing for their failures". And after his identity is revealed, he almost succeeded in pushing Kakashi over the Despair Event Horizon, and only thanks to Naruto and Guy did he fall short of crossing it.
    • After Neji's death he gave one of the most devastating one of these to Naruto and almost succeeded, but Hinata puts Naruto back on track. Further in the confrontation with Naruto, he continued to give them again and again in his attempts to break him and prove to himself that the path he had chosen was the right one.
  • Break the Cutie: In the past, he was basically an Uchiha version of Naruto who grew up without ever knowing his parents, was in love with his teammate Rin, who in turn was in love with his rival Kakashi, and dreamed of becoming Hokage and bringing peace to the world. After his entire right side is crushed by a boulder while saving Kakashi, he makes Kakashi promise to protect Rin. He is rescued by Madara, who tells him that he can't ever be a ninja again and goes on to tell him how pointless the ninja world is and how it will only bring him misery. Obito refutes his ideals and goes through a painful rehabilitation process, with the only thing to keep him going being the thought of his friends. And when he finally leaves what is the first thing he sees? Rin dying by Kakashi's hands and the realization that Madara was right. He breaks so hard that his Sharingan, which explicitly matures faster the more intensely the user experiences powerful emotions, immediately goes from its initial awakened state to fully matured, and then straight to its Mangekyo state.
  • Broken Pedestal: Kakashi spent years trying to live up to Obito's loyalty to his comrades and kindhearted nature, and emulated his personality and mannerisms as a memorial to him.

    C - D
  • Cannot Self Terminate: It turns out that Madara placed a seal on Obito's heart which would have prevented him from killing himself should he have abandoned the Moon's Eye Plan and opted for an easier way to end his suffering; it also prevented him from becoming the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki in case he tried to sidestep Madara on the plan. Obito knew about this all along and goaded Kakashi into stabbing him in the heart to get around it and become the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki anyway.
  • Canon Discontinuity: Invoked in universe, this is Obito's reasoning for doing what he does. Rin is Rin only if she's alive, Kakashi is Kakashi only if he can protect Rin, therefore the world he is living in is not the real one. Using the Eternal Tsukuyomi, he can pretend this never happened.
  • Cast as a Mask: When he acts as Madara, Obito's voice switches from his "goofy" Tobi voice to a deeper one. This is as much a deliberate use of the trope as it is one caused by the directors not knowing he was a fake at the time of casting. When the real Madara is revived, he speaks with the same voice Obito had been using and the demasked Obito uses his previous Tobi voice, but with a more serious tone, implying that Obito was imitating Madara's voice while acting as him.
  • Chain Pain: Used a pair of chains on his wrists in his fight with Minato which combined with his intangibility turned out to be deadly. Also uses chakra chains to control the Tailed Beasts.
  • Character Development: After his defeat and conversation with Naruto and Kakashi, Obito regrets his actions and tries to redeem himself, helping Naruto and the Alliance against Madara and later, Kaguya. Ultimately dies protecting Naruto and Kakashi from Kaguya's attack.
  • Character Shilling: After Kaguya kills Obito, Naruto screams at her that he was "the coolest". Keep in mind that Obito was partially responsible for a clear majority of the mess that happened in the manga - especially Naruto's parents' and Neji's deaths - and only pulled a Heel–Face Turn a short time ago.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The first time he was shown he was in a photo that made him a mere parallel to Kakashi, until Kakashi Gaiden, where it was revealed he was not just the origin of Kakashi's Sharingan, but also his laziness and belief in friendships. Then he became Tobi...
  • Chekhov M.I.A.: Although he was undoubtedly buried under a ton of rock and understandably believed to be killed, we never received accurate evidence that he was dead since his team was even unable to secure his corpse. And as it turned out, not by chance...
  • Chekhov's Skill: During the meeting with Sasuke, he somehow survives being set afire by an Amaterasu trap set by Itachi. Tobi reappears a bit later with no harm done and says that it was a good thing he kept some secrets from Itachi. Later in the battle with Konan, this becomes important as this secret is Izanagi which he uses to survive the battle with her.
  • The Chessmaster:
    • While Madara started the Moon-Eye Plan and transplanted his Rinnegan into Nagato, practically everything afterward was directed by Tobi, including the manipulation of Nagato and Sasuke, leading Akatsuki from behind the scenes, the start of the Fourth Shinobi World War, using the Nine-Tails to attack Konoha and eventually close the curtain on his own clan, all while impersonating Madara.
    • However, in the grand scheme of things, Obito had always been Madara's pawn, right from the start of his downward spiral into darkness and hatred. Madara had prepared for every eventuality and placed many forms of control on the young man, even orchestrating his love's death, to ensure Obito would become a living puppet bound to his will.
    • Though it should be noted that Obito actually knew about this control Madara placed on him. He had no intention to resurrect him as he was going to take control of the Moon's Eye Plan. He would have succeeded if not for Black Zetsu resurrecting Madara through Kabuto. Even then, he goaded Kakashi into stabbing him in the heart to get rid of Madara's control and become the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki.
    • After his Heel–Face Turn, when he plunges his hand through Madara's chest, he is taking back a portion of Shukaku's and Gyuki's chakra since he knows these are the exact chakra Naruto is missing. And that with these two, Naruto will hold the chakra of all the tailed beasts and be able to pull out the tailed beasts from Madara as Madara did to him (although ultimately it was not necessary). Also, later he sets about a plan to have Kakashi become Konoha's Sixth Hokage, with Naruto as the Seventh Hokage. Incredible, as the man never rose to the seat of honor himself, yet appoints others as leaders instead.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He and Rin were close from a young age and he had been in love with her for a very long time.
  • The Chosen One: According to Madara, though subverted as it was a ruse to get him to work for him. Of course, Obito would turn out to be a Deceptive Disciple who would actually achieve what Madara described, even if only for a short time.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Obito really was late all the time because of stuff like that in his childhood. He even showed up late to the Chuunin exams because he stopped to help an old lady with her bags.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: As part of his goofy "Tobi" facade.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: The Sharingan sharpens his eyesight by leagues. With it, he's able to read and anticipate enemy movements without missing a beat.
  • Combat Commentator:
    • He parodied this in the anime version of his "fight" with the Leaf Village ninja, where Tobi acts as a Combat Commentator despite it being a battle he himself is fighting in, loudly announcing the strategy he easily figured out his opponents are using against him, and still acting like it's catching him off-guard.
    • He also plays this role in the fight Sasuke against Danzo. This is even lampshaded by Danzo:
Danzo: "It seems Tobi isn't going to join the battle. I will fight him later."
  • Combat Hand Fan: Uses Madara's gunbai, though he later returns it.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Obito may use any means available to achieve victory, whether it's a piece of pipe, a massive chain, or even his own severed hand.
  • Combo Platter Powers:
    • As an Uchiha, Tobi has Fire Release, Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan and all the accompanying abilities. He also has the Senju DNA, which grants him great vitality and immense chakra reserves (which presumably allows him to constantly use his Mangekyo Sharingan with minimal chakra drain and no side effects to his eyes), regeneration on the right side of his body, Super-Strength and the First Hokage's legendary Wood Release. In addition, he also has Earth, Water, Yin, and Yang Releases. He also took one of Nagato's Rinnegan, giving him access to the Six Paths, the ability to summon and control the Gedo Statue, and create chakra rods.
    • He also became the Ten Tails' Jinchuuriki, giving him greatly increased physical capabilities and access to Yin-Yang Release which allows him to manipulate black spheres of pure chakra, noted by the Third Hokage to be similar to the Particle Release, which is capable of violating the Law of Conservation of Matter, basically erasing from existence everything that comes in contact with it. Malleable black holes that can change form and volume as he so pleases, while annihilating his victims without a trace.
  • Complexity Addiction: He can become intangible at will, warp people into a pocket dimension, and can teleport himself (or others) wherever he likes, and has been able to do this for the past seventeen years. At no point before the start of Shippuden did he ever consider capturing not only Naruto but any of the other eight Jinchuuriki that are necessary for his plan. And even then, when he decides it's time, he sends in a bunch of far less capable subordinates or starts a Shinobi World War rather than simply use his own powers to easily capture the Jinchuuriki when they're asleep or off-guard. There is also the fact that he wants to force Naruto and Sasuke to fight to see which one of them is stronger. Keep in mind that the rivalry between them is a relatively recent thing, therefore not a part of his original plan.
    • It's implied and lampshaded by Kakashi that the reality is simply that Obito could never fully commit himself to the plan out of both regret for his actions in the face of his former idealism and the love he held for his old friends, so he intentionally invoked this trope to try and break Naruto's spirit during the War and thus prove to himself that his [Obito's] original path was wrong and everything he's doing now is justified. Needless to say, it backfired.
  • Consummate Liar:
    • He manages to mix truths and lies to such a degree that nobody is entirely sure what is true and what is not about his many revelations. For example, most of the things he told Sasuke were true, but he also lied that he was not involved with the Nine-Tails attacking Konoha.
    • For most of the time of the series, he claimed that he was Madara Uchiha, and everyone believed it, due to his accomplishments, powers and knowledge. It took the true Madara appearing as a reanimated zombie for everyone to realize that "Madara" wasn't Madara after all.
  • Cool Mask: Obito has had three masks: an orange mask with a black flame like pattern, an orange spiral-shaped mask resembling Guruguru's face, and a white mask resembling the Rinnegan with the Sharingan's tomoe.
  • The Corrupter: To both Nagato and Sasuke, to the point where the first became a Well-Intentioned Extremist wishing to share his pain with the rest of the world and the second became Ax-Crazy, caring for nothing except his revenge. After recognizing his younger self in Naruto, he makes an attempt on him too but ultimately fails thanks to Hinata and Kurama.
  • Cosmic Plaything: An idealistic boy with a heart of gold who nearly dies horribly protecting his friends only to wake up trapped in the clutches of a fatalistic evil ancestor who gives him a cruel Breaking Speech before leaving him to a grueling recovery. Said boy clung to the dreams of his teammates just to stay alive and after barely recovering, he went on a desperate yet pointless attempt to save them because his best friend broke his promise, the woman he loved killed herself to avoid destroying her village and, in his eyes, all he did in his life prior to that moment became meaningless over a war that employed cruel and immoral tactics for the sake of victory. Despite every indication that he shouldn't, he survives it. It takes an attack from Kaguya turning him into ash to finally put him down.
  • Covered with Scars: The entire right side his body, including his face, is one big mass of scar-tissue. Some part of it may not even be his own skin anymore, and his right arm is basically a prosthetic. No surprise, given that he was crushed by a huge boulder as a child.
  • Crazy-Prepared: In his battle with Konan, he reveals that he hides a second eye for Izanagi behind the mask just in case, if, all of a sudden, he gets into a dangerous situation and his Kamui could not help him.
  • Create Your Own Hero: The reason why Naruto and Sasuke exist in the way we know is all because of Obito. Firstly, he was the one who unleashed the Nine-Tailed Fox on Konoha and therefore caused the deaths of Naruto's mother and father, as well as Naruto's life as a Jinchuuriki and as a consequence Naruto's dream of becoming Hokage. Later this incident leads to the Uchiha Clan Massacre in which he also participated, causing Sasuke's Start of Darkness. Later these two would become students of Kakashi to whom Obito in the past handed over his ideals, which in the future Kakashi will hand over to Naruto. Also, he was responsible for Kakashi's Sharingan that allowed Kakashi to complete the Chidori which in the future he will teach Sasuke. He was the one who threw Kirigakure to hell by controlling the Fourth Mizukage that in turn, would be the beginning for two Starter Villains which would also have a great influence on Naruto. His manipulation of the Akatsuki eventually lead to the death of Jiraiya and Naruto's desire to become stronger to resist Pain. He was ALSO the one who told the truth about Itachi to Sasuke, which lead to his desire to avenge Konoha, and transplanting Itachi's eyes in order to awaken the Eternal Magenkyou Sharingan. Also his declaration of war on the whole world would motivate Naruto to learn to control Kurama with the help of the funds left by his parents in order to confront him. And at the end Naruto and Sasuke united against him which led to his defeat. Altogether, Obito was defeated by those that he himself created.
  • Crystal Ball: In the non-canon movie Road to Ninja, he uses a crystal ball to teleport Naruto and Sakura to an Alternate Universe.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Rin's death is what pushed Obito beyond the Despair Event Horizon and directly motivated him into becoming Tobi. This is later expanded upon in that, while Rin's death caused his emotional breakdown and his Start of Darkness, it was the cruel plot behind her death that made him lose faith in the world and hate the ninja system for creating that kind of situation.
  • Damage Reduction: His Senju cells give him superhuman durability.
  • Dark Messiah: According to Madara. He thinks that the world is horrible beyond repair and only turns worse, so the only way to fix it is to fundamentally change reality. Sets up a deliberate contrast to Naruto.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has a tendency to make blunt, rude and disrespectful comments to his enemies.
Tobi: Back away from the jinchuuriki... or don't you care if your son dies?
Minato: Hold it, j-just calm down!!
Tobi: You should take your own advice, Minato. I'm perfectly calm.
    • And earlier:
Tobi: It's what you'd call a fail-safe... Although he only got as far as the "fail" part.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: In spite of what he would like everyone, perhaps even himself to believe, he is NOT the original Madara Uchiha. The fact that he actually is supposed to be a dead person makes it more complicated.
  • Death Wail: When he witnessed Rin's death, and during the slaughter of the Mist Village ANBU.
  • Deceptive Disciple: Even after careening past the Despair Event Horizon with Rin's death, taking Madara up on his Eye of the Moon plan, and gaining the training and knowledge to put it together, Obito never was truly loyal to Madara. After Madara finally died intending for Obito to set up the events to revive him at a later date, Obito was fully content with going about the plan on his lonesome and leaving Madara six feet under, only failing thanks to Black Zetsu leading Kabuto to Madara's corpse.
  • Declaration of Protection: Doesn't even need to say it. He shows it for both of his teammates, especially with regards to his Heroic Sacrifice in childhood.
  • Decoy Backstory: "Tobi" approachs Sasuke and reveals himself to be Madara Uchiha, a legendary figure who supposedly died 80 years ago. He then recounts his backstory, including details that were lost to time, and of course that he fake his death and survived to the modern day (although he doesn't explain how). This is Madara's real backstory, and Madara really did survive... but Tobi isn't Madara. He is a member of the Uchiha clan though, and he does know the real Madara, which is why he knows so much about him.
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit: Obito gambled on Kakashi hitting him in the heart during the war, to remove Madara's seal and become the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Rin's death was this for him. Although he doesn't seem to care anymore. It doesn't help that it was Kakashi that killed Rin, when Obito told him to protect her. It's later explained that he found out the truth about the situation and didn't blame Kakashi at all for her death. Instead, he blames the world because of how corrupted and brutal it is.
  • Despair Gambit: This is what Madara did to him so he'd make a Face–Heel Turn, and what he eventually does to Nagato and Konan (at least in the anime) to get them on his side. He eventually tries it on Naruto, but Naruto manages to resist with Hinata's help.
  • Despair Speech: He gives one after became witnessing the death of Rin.
    Obito: I'm... in Hell.
  • Determinator: Nothing, absolutely nothing will stop him. The destruction of his organization, the five great shinobi nations, the immortal zombie Hokages, the All-Loving Hero and his own eye battling him at the same time and beating him to an inch of his life or even Madara betraying him and robbing him of his life support. He will simply get up and keep going. Hell, the only reason he lost against Naruto in the first place was because, subconsciously, he wanted to lose and for Naruto to prove him wrong.
    • Then he pulled his own mind back together after being ripped apart by the Ten Tails by pure force of will through the love he still has for Rin and his former team. Makes it even more impressive when later even Madara couldn't fight the will of the Ten Tails despite being powerful enough to shrug off everything thrown at him before that.
    • And even that is not enough. After his defeat against Naruto and returning to his old self after a talk with Naruto, Kakashi and Minato, Black Zetsu possesses him and forces him to revive Madara, and then makes Obito fight against Kakashi and Minato while slowly and painfully dying, while Madara extracts the Nine-Tails from Naruto, stabs Sasuke in the heart, and becomes the Juubi Jinchuuriki. What does Obito do? He overpowers Black Zetsu and uses him as life support, then proceeds to shove his hand into Madara's chest and absorb some of the chakra. He, then, along with Kakashi, uses Kamui to teleport both Naruto, Sakura, and himself to the space-time dimension, where he gives Naruto the chakra and thereby effectively saves his life. That makes this guy the most determined character in the manga period.
    • Think he's done? Afterwards, Madara overpowers him, and rips out his Rinnegan. And then Black Zetsu, his only source of life support, abandons him, and possesses Madara to revive Kaguya. Then, after almost getting plunged into a river of lava he is revived by Naruto's Healing Hands (though this is noted to be a temporary revival, and that he will die soon no matter what is done). At which point, he retrieves a separated Sasuke so he and Naruto can defeat Kaguya, and finally gets killed by the ninja goddess herself, with an instant-kill technique, no less. Think he's finally done? He then proceeds to TELEPORT OUT OF THE AFTERLIFE temporarily and passes his chakra to Kakashi to give him a limited time's worth of his Mangekyo Sharingan, to which the latter unlocks Susanoo.
  • Deus ex Machina: When he dies, it turns out that his eyes have the power to teleport the user from the afterlife back to the land of living as a chakra ghost (he explains it is doable, at least from the Afterlife Antechamber, because chakra connects both realms, the same principle that allows Edo Tensei to work), and then he passes both his Sharingan to Kakashi using chakra transfer. Mind you, the Sharingan is a bloodline limit and his physical eyes were both destroyed when Kaguya disintegrated his body. And then Kakashi fully manifests a Susanoo in its stabilised perfect form on the first try. This isn't even getting started on the fact that Kakashi is able to use the Uchiha bloodline technique Susanoo, despite the fact that he, you know, isn't an Uchiha.
  • Diabolical Mastermind: A nice contrast to Orochimaru.
  • Died Happily Ever After: After making peace with Kakashi he returns to the afterlife where Rin has been waiting for him.
  • Discard and Draw:
    • Subverted at first, when he sacrificed his unused Sharingan eye and replaced it with a much more powerful Rinnegan eye.
    • Played straight when becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki, where he becomes a whole lot more powerful overall, but loses his phasing ability.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Years before the events of the main story, due to high ranking ninja from the Hidden Mist village abducting Rin and turning her into the Three-Tails' Jinchuuriki, and ultimately being responsible for her death, Obito, posing as Madara, Mind Controlled Yagura, the Fourth Mizukage. Under the influence of said mind control, Yagura perpetuated the Bloodline Massacres, resulting in the nigh extinction of several clans (including Haku's) and ostracizing the surviving Kekkai Genkai users, forcing them into hiding for fear of being killed. Becomes even Harsher in Hindsight when we learn that Madara was behind the Hidden Mist's role in Rin's death (using his own genjutsu to influence them into the plan), all in order to ensure Obito went along with the Moon's Eye Plan — Obito condemned potential innocents for something neither they nor their village willingly had anything to do with. That said, the Mist at the time of Rin's kidnapping already referred to themselves as "Blood Mist", with a graduation exam that consisted of killing your classmates. It's unclear too if the bloodline massacres started before or after Obito got involved. Overall it's unclear just how much of the Mist's horrific culture was a product of Obito.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Has been shown to have at least "Earth" for his chakra nature.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: He denies starting the war because of what happened to Rin but then he proceeds to explain that Rin's death opened his eyes to the truth that the world is worthless, and so therefore needs to change.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Guess who was the true leader of the Akatsuki?
  • Dragon-in-Chief: To Madara. A large part of Madara's plan is based on Obito and without him, Madara's entire plan completely falls apart. Thus, with Madara dead for most of the series (and the 17+ years prior), Obito was the one actually pulling the strings behind Akatsuki and Pain, as well as the person who actually started the war. When Madara is resurrected during the war he joins Obito and forms a Big Bad Duumvirate with him, before Obito outsmarts Madara and becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki. Madara only manages to become the Big Bad proper after Obito is defeated and has a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: To Madara. He was irritated when he learned that Kabuto just Edo Tensei'd the real Madara, whom he had no intention to resurrect in the first place.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Tobi's Mangekyou Sharingan abilities make him a defensively formidable combatant. Even knowing about his abilities and planning against them isn't enough, as Fu, Torune, and Konan can testify. So, in order to get past this, all of his opponents have had some sort of exclusive technique to counter his warping/intangible abilities. Minato was able to defeat Tobi by just a split-second using his Flash Step technique; Konan had been observing Tobi's abilities in Akatsuki the whole time and she had to ''heavily'' plan, simulate and plant billions of traps to battle him, and she still lost; Kakashi, Naruto, Guy, and Killer Bee had been having trouble even scratching Tobi until Kakashi realized he just happened to have the exact same Kamui dimension as Tobi.
    • Also, it should be noted that he accomplished this with only one of his Mangekyou eyes. Once he gets both, he can jump into Kaguya's dimension. And when Kakashi uses both, it's revealed that Obito also had the potential to use Susanoo. Who knows what would have happened if he got back his second eye before he pulled a Heel–Face Turn?
    • It's eventually revealed that the Rinnegan is so powerful that Obito could barely control one eye without losing himself. This is the reason why his use of it is so limited, only really using the chakra receivers, the Demonic Statue summoning, and a heavily-limited version of the Six Paths of Pain that relies on controlling the resurrected Jinchuuriki and letting them use their own unique techniques without the Six Paths' powerset aside from shared vision.
    • Madara had planted a seal on his heart that prevented him from becoming a Jinchuuriki, meaning he couldn't actually use any of the Tailed Beasts he'd captured. His way of getting around this is to let someone stab out his heart then immediately become the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki to survive the injury, forcing him to wait until the last mintue before he can benefit from all the power he'd accumulated.
    • After becoming the Jinchuuriki of the Ten Tails, Obito is unable to use Kamui due to having the Ten Tails sealed inside his body. This is sort of justified, as the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki, Obito is already a Physical God; adding Kamui to the mix would virtually make him an invincible Physical God.
    • He regains the ability to use Kamui when he starts ripping the Ten Tails from its latest Jinchuuriki, Madara. Much to Madara's annoyance, because it means, despite his god-like powers, he cannot catch Obito.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Naruto finally manages to shatter his mask by exploiting a weakness in his defenses and in the process, confirms the Obito theory.
  • The Dreaded: Tobi invokes this when masquerading as Madara, inspiring fear and dread toward anyone he encounters and giving the presentation of his threats and ambitions much more weight. It works well enough for the Five Great Villages to form an alliance when Tobi makes a declaration of war and even when his true identity is thrown into question and is revealed to be Obito, everyone still treats him with extreme caution and wariness. And when Obito becomes the Ten Tails' jinchuriki, his fear factor exceeds even Madara's, with every active combatant of the opposite side shifting their priorities to deal with him at any cost.
    • Even before then, he still had some of this going even after it was revealed he wasn't Madara, as with his Combo Platter Powers of Kamui, Wood Style, Six Jinchuuriki with the ability to become Tailed Beasts, Hashirama cells and a Rinnegan, he was among the most formidable fighters in the series. Barring the revived Madara, Hashirama, Minatonote , and maybe Itachinote , nobody had a hope against him in a 1 on 1 fight.
  • Driven to Villainy: He was kind in his childhood. But after his entire right side was crushed by a boulder while saving Kakashi, he made him promise to protect Rin at any cost. Later he was rescued by Madara, who decided to push him over the Despair Event Horizon in order to make him the perfect accomplice for his plan. So, he took control over various shinobi, including Rin, to create a situation where Obito would witness the death of the one person who made his life worth living. Ultimately Obito bore witness to how the love of his life was killed by his best friend, who promised to protect her at any cost (though Madara himself admitted that it was only a happy coincidence). And despite easily being the most decent of all the Uchiha in the series, not even Obito was immune to the clan's most fatal flaw: their ability to love more deeply than anyone else. If anything, it was worse for him seeing as he was the most idealistic and emotional of all the Uchiha, and thus his sense of love was far deeper than usual. And if you take into account that Madara placed a seal on Obito's heart in order to prevent him from committing suicide had he abandoned the Moon's Eye Plan and opted for an easier way to end his suffering... you really can't blame the guy for going insane.
  • Duel Boss: When the Ten Tails goes on a rampage, he pulls Kakashi and himself into Kamui, isolating the two of them from the rest of the fighting while mentioning that he was "waiting for this". He invokes this as part of his Deliberate Injury Gambit.
  • Dueling Messiahs: His confrontation with Naruto can be classified as this. They both want is achieved peace in the world however, Obito thinks that the world is horrible beyond repair and only turns worse, so the only way to fix it is to fundamentally change reality whereas Naruto thinks that this world is not hopeless and continues to fight for a better world.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: In his childhood when he was not too smart, Rin was captured by enemies, the Kakashi suggests that the enemy will make use of Rin's medic-nin skills to heal their wounded (as an argument against going to save her) while Obito suggests that the enemy won't think to use her that way and will interrogate her for information on their mission (as an argument for going to save her). Obito turns out to be right.
  • Dumbass No More: According to the databooks, his intelligence was a 1/5 as a kid. As an adult, he becomes The Chessmaster.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: His Heroic Sacrifice. Nearly any blows this son of a bitch suffered in the series were either no selled like it was nothing, or he managed to survive through due to his determination or having a backup plan. The fact it took a one-hit kill from a goddess to finish him for good should speak for itself. Also, before he crumbles into dust he gives Naruto an inspiring speech and passes on his original dream and Will of Fire and dies with a smile on his face. But that isn't even the best part: after his death he just uses Kamui to teleport out of the afterlife temporarily and passes his chakra to Kakashi to give him two Mangekyo Sharingan, which ultimately allows Team 7 to get an opening on Kaguya and seal her again.

    E - G
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He can be seen with the rest of his team in a photo behind Kakashi's bed on the cover of chapter 16.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: When Obito first appeared in the anime his design wasn’t 100% concrete. The basics were there though. Obito's hair was a bit different and he looked younger. His clothes were completely different as well. Obito wore gray goggles, his clothes had no orange on them, and he had a stick in his mouth.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite causing the most destructive War in ninja history, indirectly killing Minato and Kushina, killing the seven Jinchuuriki around the world, and making the Bloody Mist worse... Naruto and Rin forgive him. He had pulled a Heel–Face Turn and died in a Heroic Sacrifice saving Naruto and Kakashi when the former forgave him, but calling him 'The Greatest' after his death was probably stretching it a little.
  • Emergency Transformation: Madara replaced the crushed half of Obito's body with the plant matter grown from the First Hokage's cells.
  • Energy Absorption: Obito's chakra reserves were enhanced by the White Zetsu matter equipped to his body, enabling him the ability to absorb chakra by simply making physical contact due to having Hashirama Senju's cells.
  • Establishing Character Moment: For his Tobi persona, his appearance at the end of the Rescue Gaara arc showcases his irreverence, goofiness, and general lack of skills. Which is exactly what he wanted people to think of him.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He genuinely loved his teammate Rin and all his former team generally. When Rin died at Kakashi's hands and their sensei did not come to the rescue it broke him and led him to accept Madara's plan, beginning his Start of Darkness. Ultimately, he enacted Madara's Moon's Eye Plan because he wanted to live in his ideal world where Rin, Kakashi and Minato were together with him and living up to the ideals that drove Obito during his youth.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even he hates Madara Uchiha.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He is in complete disbelief that Naruto managed to turn Nagato against him, and soon decides it must have been due to Nagato just being easily manipulated. He even outright implies he thinks Naruto is simply trying to manipulate people the way he does, but to different results.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Subverted in that he originally kept the same outfit after being revealed as the Big Bad. Played straight when he replaces his old mask with one that resembles the Ten-Tailed Beast's single eye. Also, he now wears the same robes and holds the same giant "fan" (actually a gunbai) that Madara Uchiha did in the later flashbacks, as opposed to his old Akatsuki uniform.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • His personality and background were similar to Naruto's: he has an uncanny resemblance to Naruto, he has the same dream of becoming Hokage, same one-sided crush on their female teammate—Obito with Rin, Naruto with Sakura—and he possesses the same jealousy of the "cool guy" of his team. And the parallels just keep on mounting, with Obito becoming a Jinchuuriki and being revealed that he is also an orphan who never met his parents. Obito sees all these similarities, though he presumes that Naruto will end up like him in the end. He even tries to pull a Break the Cutie after Neji's death, to show him how horrible the real world is, and accelerate the process. But Naruto brings Obito back to the light through the connection they have.
In spite of these similarities, though, there are three notable differences between Naruto and Obito: Naruto's Living Emotional Crutch is not his first crush Sakura, but rather his future wife Hinata, while Obito's Crutch was his first and only crush Rin; Naruto ended his crush on Sakura after Chapter 469 and truly fell in love with and got Happily Married to Hinata, while Obito never got over Rin; and Hinata was able to save Naruto from going down a potential Start of Darkness after Neji's death, while Obito didn't have anyone to stop him from making his Face–Heel Turn.
    • He's also one to Kakashi given their past history together, similar (superficial) trickster personality traits, and the same Sharingan abilities. As he holds Obito at knifepoint, Kakashi explicitly admits that he could have very well sunken into the same mindset of despair and hopelessness that Obito did after Rin died, but it was the fact that Obito entrusted him with his eye and indirectly, Obito's hopes for a better world for Rin, that made him keep going.
  • Evil Former Friend: To Kakashi.
  • Evil Genius: He's a genius. He's evil. Pretty self-explanatory. Also combines this role together with Big Bad after the Pain Invasion Arc until Kabuto joins him.
  • Evil Mentor: He’s the second one to Sasuke. Tobi does a much better job at it than Orochimaru.
  • Evil Overlooker: On both covers for the non-canon movie Road to Ninja.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: When impersonating Madara, both dubs use bass/baritone actors (who also voice the real Madara), in contrast to the tenors who voice goofy Tobi and Obito.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: After his mask breaks, both dubs return to the actor who voiced goofy Tobi, but using a much more sinister tone compared to his previous silliness.
  • Expy: A masked villain trained by both one of the greatest heroes and villains of the mythos, who is a puppet for the true power(s) of the organization he works for, who is among the best warriors alive, was a hero in the past, who was once the best friend of the hero’s teacher, became a villain because of events in the past (and continues to be one for decades to escape his past, to the point of adopting a new identity entirely), and wavers back to good when he is confronted directly by his past. Obito/Tobi, or Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader?
  • Exotic Eye Designs: His Mangekyo Sharingan.
  • Eye Scream: Gets his right eye removed by Rin. He wanted that to happen.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Obito in the past was an idealistic boy with a heart of gold, having the philosophy of protecting one's comrade and the dream of being a Hokage, but after he witnessed Rin's death, he crossed the Despair Event Horizon and decided to destroy a world where loved ones die and heroes fail so that he can replace it with a reality of love, winners and peace.
  • The Faceless: We've only been able to see a small part of his right eye and there are numerous wrinkles around it. After his Dramatic Unmask, it's revealed that the supposed wrinkles are actually scars.
  • Faking the Dead: A mild zigzag. Having apparently died while on a mission only to survive with no means to contact anyone. The faking was unwilling at first as he wanted to return home but after witnessing Rin's death he decided That Man Is Dead and went with this trope.
  • Fallen Hero: In the past, he was basically an Uchiha version of Naruto but Rin's death broke him pretty badly and transformed him into Tobi.
  • False Friend: To Nagato. He and Nagato worked as allies as the true powers of Akatsuki. But after Nagato's death, he shows frank contempt for Nagato, saying that Nagato just too easily influenced and merely complains about needing another pawn. And later he revealed to Konan that he had been using Nagato's ideals and his quite understandable hatred against the people to control him.
  • Fatal Flaw: Excessive idealism. He was a sincerely kind and responsive person who aspired to help everyone he could and had unwavering loyalty to his friends and allies. But after very nearly dying and then witnessing one of his best friends, who had promised to protect the woman he loved, kill said woman, he just could not accept such a confluence of circumstances since this simply could not exist in his understanding. Later learning that said woman herself chose to die at the hands of a person she loved in order to protect her village, he became imbued with contempt to this world which had forced her to make this decision and began wanting to create an entire world where this didn't happen so he could escape reality.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He acts polite, patient, easy-going and pretty laid-back but he's really a zealot that will stop at nothing to accomplish his goals. This is shown when he tells Sasuke the truth about Itachi. While his understanding tone is partly genuine thanks to his own similar experience in meeting the real Madara, it's clear that he's manipulating Sasuke into turning against Konoha.
  • Final-Exam Boss: He's got a Sharingan, a Rinnegan, his own Six Paths of Pain, his Mokuton abilities function like combat tentacles the same way Orochimaru's snakes did, and numerous other abilities akin to the past antagonists in the series had.
  • The Final Temptation:
    • He makes such a proposal to Naruto after killing Neji and pointing out Naruto could not keep his word about not losing more allies, and Naruto nearly takes it until Hinata slaps it out of him.
    • Later, he tries to tempt Kakashi by showing him illusions of Obito and Rin as children, saying Kakashi can have all of that again in Obito's illusionary world where Obito could be the ideal Kakashi imagined him to be. Kakashi, however, instantly rejects this.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: When Madara pulls a Villain Override on Obito to force to use Rinne Tensei at the cost of his life, an observant viewer will notice the hand seal Obito makes is different from the one Nagato used when he casted the jutsu. Furthering this, the expression Madara makes as the jutsu is apparently taking effect isn't one of triumph but of intense concentration, as if he's realized something's gone wrong. This all turns out to be because Obito was actually casting the jutsu that would finally seal the Ten-Tails inside of himself.
  • Foil: Surprisingly enough he is this to Kabuto. They have many similarities, but if you look more closely at them you will understand that they are completely different:
  • Foreshadowing:
    • During Sasuke's flashbacks in the Valley of the End, when Itachi tells him how to awaken Mangekyou Sharingan, he mentions that if Sasuke can do this, he will be one of the three still-living people with Mangekyou Sharingan. The first and second are Itachi and Sasuke but who is the third? Later it turns out the third owner is Obito Uchiha and that he was the one who helped Itachi in the massacre of the Uchiha clan.
    • During the fight between Deidara and Sasuke, he acts all goofy as usual until he gets away from the fight and mentally explains Deidara's C4 technique in all its details for the readers. It's the first clear hint of his Obfuscating Stupidity.
    • There's also a case of foreshadowing by absence. He is never shown using the Mangekyou Sharingan, whilst he uses his intangibility. At the moment of passing through something or absorption of anyone into his dimensions, his right eye was always closed behind a mask or just out of sight of the reader (at least in the manga). But why all this secrecy? Because his eye doesn't have Madara's distinctive design since he isn't the real Madara. Later it was revealed in a Wham Shot showing that his Mangekyou Sharingan is identical to Kakashi's Mangekyou since he is Obito Uchiha, who Kakashi got his Sharingan from.
    • Also another case of foreshadowing by absence is that he never showed his face to the readers even when he declared himself Madara to the whole world, which in retrospect, was probably the strongest clue that he wasn't actually Madara. Really, why continue to wear a mask if you have nothing to hide? Along with the fact Zetsu kept calling him Tobi even after he started to claim he was Madara; in the end he turned out to be one of the few who knew his true identity.
    • At the beginning of Shippuden, Kakashi shows that he learned a new technique called Kamui which allows Mangekyou Sharingan users to teleport something or anyone into another dimension. Later we learn about the masked man who is able to teleport himself or others to another dimension with the help of his Sharingan. Sound familiar? Also at one point Kakashi attempts to use Kamui against Tobi, only for him to dismiss it by saying "Don't bother, Kakashi, that technique doesn't work on me." Several chapters later we learn that the Kamui technique and Tobi's powers are connected, because Tobi is Obito Uchiha, from whom Kakashi received his Sharingan.
    • On the subject of his name Tobi, once you know his true true identity, it is embarrassingly obvious that "Tobi" is a phonetic Sdrawkcab Name for Obito. As an added bonus Tobi can also mean Ten-Tailed, which goes a long way towards foreshadowing his ultimate goal and his transformation into the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki.
    • When he partially reveals his face to Sasuke to expose his Sharingan, you see it looks wrinkled, so you assume he's an old man. However later in chapter 486 when Zetsu informs him that Sasuke is in danger and he is at that moment without a mask, if you look closely, you can see that his wrinkles are present only on the right side of his face while the left side seems absolutely clean. Also during the battle with Konan when she breaks down part of his mask, we are shown only the right side of his face while the left side of his face remains in the shade, which seems a bit strange. Eventually it turns out that those "wrinkles" are actually the scars from where Obito's skin stretched and deformed from the boulders smashing half his face.
    • Tobi's remark to Sasuke about understanding how confusing it is when "some weirdo takes you in and starts saying shocking things" suddenly makes sense when you realize that his second encounter with Sasuke paralleled how he met Madara.
      • In the same scene, he somehow survives being set on fire by an Amaterasu trap set by Itachi. He reflects that it was a good thing he kept some secrets from Itachi. Also, later, we see a repository of Sharingan in his laboratory but why does he need these eyes if he does not use them? This hints that he has another eye and the secret which he kept from Itachi is Izanagi.
    • Itachi reminded Naruto not to bear the weight of peace all by himself, or else he would become like "Madara". After it is revealed that he was actually Naruto's parallel in Team Minato, it suddenly makes a lot of sense.
    • When Naruto and Bee confront Tobi, he tries to persuade them to accept the Moon's Eye Plan by stating that anyone with a tailed beast sealed in them faces a life of despair. His witnessing of Rin's suicide due to having a tailed beast forced upon her led to the entire fiasco.
    • When speaking to Sasuke, his account of the warring clan era doesn't paint himself in a good light at all. Additionally, at the Kage Summit, he chuckles when the Kages accuse him of enacting the Assimilation Plot for the sake of his god complex. This turns out to be a hint of his Teeth-Clenched Teamwork with the real Madara.
    • During the Three-Tails Filler Arc, he briefly speaks with his true voice.
  • For Want Of A Nail: While clashing with Naruto's team's all-out attack, Obito finds himself imagining how would his life have turned out if he decided to return to Konoha instead of joining Madara's plan.
  • Freak Out: It happened to him after he witnessed the death of Rin.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was an orphan from childhood, despised in his own clan and he had only one single person who acknowledged him. The death of this person at the hands of the person who promised to protect her made him realize how brutal the world is, making him believe that the reality he lives in cannot be real and only his Assimilation Plot can save humanity and repair the emptiness left by deceased loved ones. And the fact that he fell under the manipulation of his evil ancestor at just 13 years of age certainly didn't help matters.
  • Friendship Denial: Sakura has only ever known him as the enemy, though accepts him as an ally and personally thanks him for saving Naruto's life. Obito tells her to keep thinking of him as an enemy, lampshading that he's getting off too easily.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Obito Uchiha had always been a loser, poorly versed in tactics and jutsu and only managed to activate his Sharingan minutes before his "death". Who would have thought that when he grew up, he would be the man who: became one of the few Uchiha since the warring clans' period to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan, took control of Kurama and unleashed him on Konoha, indirectly killed Naruto's parents (one of which was his own sensei and the Hokage), would be one of two people who organized the Uchiha massacre, would manipulate whole countries from the shadows to achieve his own goals, gave rise to the most destructive war in ninja history and lead an evil army of resurrected legendary ninja and Venus Flytrap monsters created from the DNA of one of the most powerful ninja ever against shinobi all over the world. Eventually he would become the first man from the time of Sage of the Six Paths to be the Ten-Tails' Jinchuuriki, as well as the one from the humblest beginnings since unlike Madara, Obito isn't the Reincarnation of an ancient superpowered ninja or was even intended by the Greater-Scope Villain to be the one with such power..
  • Fusion Dance:
    • With Memna in the non-canon movie Road to Ninja.
    • Guruguru does this with Obito in the main series.
  • Gambit Roulette: He indulges in this from time to time by his own admission. He took a gamble by telling Sasuke the truth about Itachi, hoping that the former would not return to the Leaf Village to protect it. Then, he honed Sasuke's skills after Nagato died, just in case he needed a replacement power source for the Gedo Statue.
  • Generation Xerox: Invoked on him by Madara. Even if he doesn't like Madara, he ends up inheriting his ideals and vision regardless. He also tries to turn Sasuke into a Generation Xerox of himself, and then tries it again when he realizes that Naruto is the current generations Generation Xerox of himself as he was before his Face–Heel Turn, and tries to break Naruto's ideals. The opposite happens, and Naruto manages to get him to redeem him and get him to perform a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Genocide from the Inside: Assists Itachi in slaughtering the Uchiha clan.
  • Glory Seeker: He was one in childhood. He was an orphan not knowing who his parents were, leaving him alone and forced to fend for himself. This sad childhood led Obito to dream of one day becoming Hokage, so that everyone would acknowledge his existence.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Rin's death and Kakashi's obsession with his regrets and shame broke him utterly.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: What tends to happen when you have a boulder smash half your head.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Obito has lost four right arms over the course of the story. The first was his actual arm, with the subsequent ones being cloned Zetsu tissue. Thanks to the enhanced healing provided by said tissue and how it synergizes with his Uchiha blood, he can regenerate the entire arm to combat readiness within minutes and can even briefly survive having his heart destroyed (regenerating by becoming the 10-Tails Jinchuruki before he could die of the injury). Combined with his Intangibility, he is one of the most durable characters in the series. It's implied that this regeneration is also a major factor in how he was able to use his Mangekyo so often for so long without losing his eyesight.
  • Go Out with a Smile: As he's dying from Kaguya's final attack and dissolving into ashes, he still manages to give both Naruto and Kakashi one last smile before going, and passes on his original dream and Will of Fire to Naruto and eventually Kakashi.
  • Graceful Loser: After his defeat at the hands of Naruto and the Alliance he calmly admits defeat and that now he understands why his way was wrong.
  • Green Thumb: He can use Wood Style thanks to the White Zetsu matter Madara has retrofitted to replace the right side of his body that was damaged.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: His arm gets infected by The Virus, so he breaks it off before it spreads, drops it on the ground, then kicks it at his other opponent (who dodges it because The Virus is spread by touch) which leaves his opponent open so he can suck him into another dimension.

    H - K
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Although his hair grew out during his time in Madara's cave of evil, he eventually trims it back to the style he had as Obito, making his true identity even more obvious.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: A rare vertical example, as the entire right side of his body was smashed by the boulder and replaced with tissue taken from a prototype "Spiral" Zetsu. The tissue took time to mature and strengthen, which was evident when Obito tried to punch out a solid stone wall, only to smash his new arm into putty.
  • Half-Truth: It's pretty obvious he's withholding more than he's claiming.
  • Handshake Refusal: Don't let your guard down and shake Obito by the hand. Naruto and Madara both discovered this the hard way.
  • Healing Factor: Has one thanks to cloned flesh grafts from Hashirama. It's implied his Uchiha blood or some unique aspect of himself allowed him to make more use of the cultured flesh than other people could.
  • Heart Trauma: He claims to have removed his heart, because all it could feel was pain. He also claims that he no longer feels pain, and plans to fill the hole left behind with an illusory world where Rin is still alive. However, that's just a genjutsu; when Kakashi fatally impales him through the chest he really feels the pain and would have died from it if not for the regeneration provided by becoming the ten tails jinchuruki.
  • He's Back!: When he betrays Madara, Obito states that he is not Madara, but Obito Uchiha, the person who wanted to become Hokage.
  • The Heavy: He's Obito, one of the main antagonists of the entire series. So he was responsible for Kakashi's Sharingan, and his personality. He was responsible for the Nine-Tails attack on Konoha and therefore the deaths of Naruto's mother and father, as well as Naruto's life as a Jinchuuriki and as a consequence Naruto's dream of becoming Hokage. Later this incident leads to the Uchiha Clan Massacre in which he also participated, causing Sasuke's Start of Darkness, and he threw Kirigakure to hell by controlling the Fourth Mizukage that in turn, would be the beginning for two Starter Villains, which would be a major influence behind Naruto's personal code. He's the leader of the Akatsuki and is directly responsible for the existence and activities of the organization as we know it now. Also he's responsible for indirectly causing a ton of other problems, like determining the damage done by Orochimaru's invasion of Konoha because he killed Minato, who could've stopped him. Obito's "death" was a huge catalyst for everything in the plot of series.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: He tries to use Rinne Tensei, admitting that he now understands why Nagato betrayed the Akatsuki, but before he can do so Black Zetsu possesses him and forces him to use it on Madara. Later, he really does a Heel–Face Turn by rebelling against Madara.
  • Heel–Face Turn: At first, this is defied when Naruto offers him the chance and he rejects it, but he does end up pulling a legitimate Heel–Face Turn.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: By saving Kakashi from being crushed by a falling boulder. Much later he attempts to sacrifice his life via the Rinnegan to revive those killed in the war, but is instead forced by Black Zetsu to use the technique to revive Madara. Also later allows himself to be hit by a fatal blow intended for Naruto and doesn't save himself in order to save Kakashi instead.
  • Hero Killer: The most effective in the series. He's responsible for or played a part in the deaths of Naruto's parents, Hiruzen's wife, the entire Uchiha clan save Sasuke, Danzo's bodyguards, Konan, Neji, Shikaku with Inoichi and a large number of allied ninja troops. By claiming Madara's name as an alias, he gains enough clout to force the entire Ninja World into the Fourth World War. The anime adds to this list the first members of Akatsuki and Izumi Uchiha.
  • Horned Humanoid: Gains a pair of horns after asserting control over the Ten Tails.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: Played With. During the reveal as "Madara" we find out that he was behind Akatsuki but we don't know why he collects tailed beasts. Later we learned that he collects them in order to resurrect the Ten Tailed Beast so he can become its Jinchuuriki and take over the world by hypnotizing everyone. But even then we did not know exactly why he is doing it. Is it for the sake of his god complex? For peace in the world? Or something else? And why does he wear this mask if he has already declared himself to the world as Madara Uchiha? But all this was finally answered during the Fourth Shinobi World War when it turned out that he was not Madara but Obito Uchiha.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • In childhood he looks like a cheerful and sanguine boy who wants to protect his friends and especially his childhood friend Rin. But where did this desire come from? After The Reveal, we learn that he was an orphan who didn't know who his parents were, being an outcast in his own clan and forced to fend for himself. This sad childhood forced Obito to hide behind the act of a happy-go-lucky idiot to escape his loneliness and led him to dream of one day becoming Hokage, so that everyone would acknowledge his existence. This is why his Start of Darkness begins upon Rin's death. She was the only one who acknowledged him and his dream of being the next Hokage.
    • Later as Tobi he seems to be a Straw Nihilist who completely abandoned his past and just wants to complete his plan. So why is he trying to break Naruto's spirit during the War? It turns out that Obito's Will of Fire had never actually burned out, and his actions and unwillingness to acknowledge this are causing him inner turmoil that is tearing him up inside. Eventually if deep down he didn't regret his actions or had completely given up the love he held for his comrades then he would have killed Naruto and completed his plan a long time ago instead of playing Complexity Addiction and debating the beliefs of the protagonist. Also during his defeat he starts to envision the way his life would have turned out if he had returned to Konoha when Rin died and rejoined his friends as allies, even going so far as to imagine himself as Hokage, despite not consciously understanding why.
  • Hijacking Cthulhu: Uses his Sharingan to pull this on Kurama and force it to attack Konoha. Later, he becomes the Jinchuuriki of the Ten Tails but cannot control its power, resulting in its will tearing his psyche apart until he focuses on his love for Rin and his former team, which subdues it.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • Apparently he didn't learn anything from the "Rasengan meets mask" incident and sucked Kakashi into his alternate dimension—only for Kakashi to repeatedly pummel any part of him that materialized within it. Admittedly given the way he later mocks Kakashi for not trying to kill him during said pummels, this is implied to be purposeful as he wanted Kakashi to strike his heart and remove the seal that was preventing him from becoming the 10 Tails jinchuruki (and eventually he succeeds in goading Kakashi into doing so).
    • After being mortally wounded by a Raikiri Kunai from Kakashi, Madara turns the White Zetsu attachments grafted onto Obito's body black and controls him. Which goes on to backfire on Madara when Obito resists his control and becomes the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki.
  • Hope Crusher: He believes that reality is hell and "There is no such thing as hope", and to prove his point to others (and himself) he strives to push others across the Despair Event Horizon to break their will and convince them that his plan is the right thing for humanity. And given that he perceives Naruto as a younger version of himself it is not surprising that he is trying to break him.
  • Hot-Blooded: He was in childhood.
  • Hour of Power: He can only maintain continuous usage of Kamui for five minutes, after which it immediately stops, presumably due to chakra drain or stress on his eye. Konan tries to take advantage of this with her killer move of continuous explosions for ten minutes, but he uses Izanagi with a spare sacrificial Sharingan to power through the remaining time, with his version proving much more powerful than Danzo's mere minute limit.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Obito becomes one when he becomes the Jinchuuriki of the Ten Tailed Beast, with the artificial half of his body becoming covered in scales. Until he gets its power under control, he even goes through Body Horror.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Believes that the Crapsack World he lives in inevitably turns all ninja into "trash", himself included. It's part of why he wants to complete an Assimilation Plot.
  • Humiliation Conga: He's gone from the most powerful being in the Narutoverse since the Rikudo Sennin, to a Person Puppet for Black Zetsu after getting mentally kicked in the balls by Naruto, all the Tailed Beasts extracted from him, and when he tries to atone Black Zetsu takes him over and forces him to resurrect Madara. THEN Black Zetsu does the aforementioned Person Puppet on him to draw out his suffering since he's dying. THEN Madara extracts the Gedo Statue from him leaving him in even worse shape and barely able to stop Black Zetsu from taking the other Rinnegan. Not that this will stop Obito in any way.
  • Hyper Space Arsenal: He stores many weapons in his Kamui dimension such as Fuma Shuriken, and a massive chain and stake combo for pinning down and restraining the Tailed Beasts.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: His Sharingan can cast potent genjutsu on his opponent ranging from subtly throwing off their perception of reality to outright mind control. This allowed him to control Nine-Tails using only one eye and also take control of the fourth Mizukage, being only a teenager.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: He despises being betrayed and considers all traitors worse than trash. He condemns Nagato and Konan for the fact that they betrayed him and also Kakashi for failing to keep his promise. But he himself planned to betray Nagato and Konan earlier and also betrayed a large number of people before that. However he himself is aware of his hypocrisy and in conversation with Kakashi he recognizes himself the same trash as Kakashi and states that the world in which they live inevitably turns all ninja into trash, even himself, and that this is the reason why he wants to complete an Assimilation Plot.
  • I Am Your Opponent: Lampshaded/parodied during the attack Nine-Tailed on Konoha. He makes Minato fight him instead of defending his village, saying this even though he's about to win instantly, amending "And... we're done!" to his declaration afterward.
  • I Can Rule Alone: Madara groomed him with both the training and knowledge necessary to carry out the Moon Eye Plan while intending Obito to revive him using Nagato at a later date so they would complete it together (or at least let Madara himself finish the job). Obito, be it from the very beginning or sometime afterward, decided to nix that "revive Madara" part from the plan and rule the Infinite Tsukuyomi alone as the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki. He only fails due to Black Zetsu bringing Kabuto to Madara's corpse and letting him revive him through Edo Tensei.
  • Iconic Sequel Character: Despite being the overarching villain of the series, and responsible for almost everything that happened in the series, he does not appear in the series until Kakashi Gaiden which takes place after Part 1 (although he had an Early-Bird Cameo before that).
  • I Gave My Word: Obito might be duplicitous and manipulative, but he kept his word to Itachi that he wouldn't attack Konoha as long as he lived. Of course, as soon Itachi dies, he has no problem sending Pain and Konan to attack Konoha.
  • I Have Many Names: He was known as Tobi, Madara, Masked Man, the Mizukage and Obito.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Defied at first. After Kakashi fails to take the shot on Obito, he insists that something of the man he used to be is still within him. Obito insists that he is incorrect. This continues until Kakashi finally comes to the conclusion that his friend as he knew him was in fact dead. Then comes back up when said conclusion is utterly defied by Naruto.
  • I Let You Win: Turns out he deliberately let Kakashi stab him in the heart to remove Madara's seal as it prevented him from becoming the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki.
  • I'm Dying, Please Take My MacGuffin: After he is killed by Kaguya, his spirit uses Kamui to leave the afterlife and transfer his chakra and both Sharingan to Kakashi.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice:
    • What he did to Mist's ANBU. By the time he's done, their corpses are raining blood!
    • Also did it with Konan by way of steel pipe.
    • He also does this to Madara after reclaiming his identity as "Obito Uchiha", betraying him and taking back Yin Kurama and a portion of Shukaku's and Gyuki's chakra (that Naruto is currently missing).
  • Implacable Man: Losing half of his body at age 13 only slowed him. So far he has been: struck with a fully powered Rasengan from the Fourth Hokage, poisoned with microscopic insects, set on eternal fire from Itachi, hit by 600 billion bombs from Konan blowing up at his face, pierced in the heart by a Raikiri enhanced kunai from Kakashi, taken over by his Evil Mentor through the plant side and cut from shoulder to waist by the revived Fourth Hokage a second later. Once he becomes the Ten-Tails' jinchuuriki this gets taken up a notch as he takes a dozen mountain size gate seals from the First Hokage (a.k.a. the God of Shinobi) dropped at his head at supersonic velocity before blowing them up with just raw strength. And not even the might of the Ten Tails ripping his mind apart gave him pause: he subdued it by clinging to his love of Rin and the desire to recover his former team. Bonus points for doing it with his own willpower in a few minutes when it usually takes years for Jinchuuriki to work together with their Tailed Beast.
  • Improbable Age: Obito masterminded the Nine-Tails attack at around 14 and gave the Fourth Hokage the fight of his life. Not much later on, he was already manipulating world powers and setting up the stage for the world to fall into chaos.
  • The Infiltration: A very odd inversion. He seems to have made up an alias (and alternate personality to boot) and infiltrated his own organization without any particular reason except fun.
  • Intangibility: He is able to become intangible by using the same space/time manipulation he uses to teleport. The primary weaknesses are that he cannot attack while intangible, he cannot be intangible while teleporting himself or others (and the more he tries to teleport the longer it takes), and he can only stay intangible for five minutes at a time. After becoming the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki, he states that he can no longer use this ability.
  • Interdimensional Travel Device: This is the main ability of his Mangekyo Sharingan. He can use his eye to travel to an alternate dimension at will. He can even send parts of his body when in danger so he can dodge at the last second, giving the illusion that he is an Intangible Man. He instinctively teleports the portion of his body that intersects with an attack into an alternate dimension. He can even reach other dimensions, but it costs a ridiculous amount of stamina and chakra to do that.
  • In the Blood: Despite easily being the most decent of all the Uchiha in the series, not even Obito was immune to the clan's most fatal flaw: their ability to love more deeply than anyone else. If anything, it was worse for him seeing as he was the most idealistic and emotional of all the Uchiha, and thus his sense of love was far deeper than usual. The Heroic Suicide of the love of his life for the sake of her village and what became of his best friend (a hero that can only make excuses before graves) drove him over the deep end and made him what he is today.
  • In the Hood: After taking up the identity of "Madara", his early outfits were hooded cloaks.
  • Invincible Villain: Most fights with him in the series consist of him spamming Kamui with reckless abandon. When Konan attempts to exploit this, he uses Izanagi to survive at the cost of his left eye. When Edo Tensei was canceled and he was not able to capture Naruto and Bee, he still compensates for the missing beasts by using smaller pieces of their chakra that he collected earlier to revive the Ten-Tails. When he is beaten to an inch of his life and Madara betrays him and robs him of his life support, he shows that it was all part of his plan to become the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki. And even when he is overwhelmed by its power and his psyche is nearly torn to pieces, he subdues it through sheer force of will and becomes a full Physical God. He eventually was defeated but this was mostly only due to his internal conflict.
  • Instant Expert:
    • Immediately after activating the Mangekyo, he uses it and his previously unseen Wood Style perfectly to slaughter a few dozen ninjas.
    • It took him a couple of minutes to go from a mindless berserker to controlling the Ten-Tails' power to the point of leaving a disintegration bomb in the stump of the Fourth Hokage's severed arm.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Pretty much literally as he said this word-for-word after witnessing Rin's death. He refuses to acknowledge a world in which Rin chose to sacrifice herself and Kakashi was unable to protect her, and chooses to believe the current world is fake. His main goal is to use Infinite Tsukuyomi to replace reality with a dream world where he can pretend all this didn't happen.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: As Tobi, he was frequently blown up by Deidara's bombs. The same kind that he used to kill people and OHKO a Tailed Beast (Three-Tails).
  • Irony:
    • His identity. If Kakashi had abandoned his comrades and completed his mission to destroy the bridge, Obito would have died. This would have given Naruto an actual childhood, made Nagato less crazy, made the Mist Village a better place, invited the possibility of Minato stopping the Uchiha Massacre, let the Moon's Eye Plan die with Madara, and prevented the Fourth Great Shinobi World War.
    • As a child, he promised Rin that he would end all wars and bring peace to the world of shinobi. As noted in Nice Job Fixing It, Villain, despite all the terrible things he had committed in his life, his actions eventually forced the shinobi nations of the world to set aside their previous grievances and stand together for a common cause and to form an Alliance against him. So ironically he ultimately kept his promise to Rin of ending all wars and bringing peace to the world.
    • Despite being an Uchiha and therefore a descendant of Indra, Obito has more in common with the Asura reincarnations (who is also a distant blood relative of Obito's and the Uchiha). His version of the Sage's staff lampshades this, as it is topped with the 'sun' emblem of Asura's line as opposed to Madara's staff, which had the 'moon' emblem of Indra's line.
  • It Amused Me: The fact that he infiltrated his own organization by pretending to be a harmless fool for seemingly no reason since most of Akatsuki already knew it was fake, which can only lead to the conclusion that he did it for shits and giggles.
  • It's All About Me: As Naruto notes, while Obito does say he has noble intentions, he is still being primarily motivated in his selfish desires to have his loved ones back.
    • Tobi's a notable case in that he was Obito, one of the best of the Uchiha personality wise and, along with Shisui, one of the few who didn't suffer from this. However, Rin's death served as his Despair Event Horizon, and subsequently brought out all the Uchiha traits he used to lack, including this and the talent that Uchiha Clan ninja tend to have. Now, he claims he's completing his Assimilation Plot in order to create a better world but the truth is that he doesn't care about this world anymore, due to his apparent thought of Crapsack World status, and thinks that everybody will be resurrected and happy in his dream world. What he most of all wants in the end is to live in his ideal world where Rin and his other teammates are alive but he doesn't care for the remaining living members of his team in this world and refuses to acknowledge Rin's sacrifice because he believes that "this world" forced her to make the sacrifice and that "this world" has turned the remaining members of his team including him into "trash" and instead believes that the only place where all can be good is in his illusory world.
  • It's Personal: Invoked and Subverted. Rin died at the hands of Kakashi, and Obito, knowing that Kakashi feels guilty about being unable to protect her, invoked this as a way Break Them by Talking ("Because you let Rin die"), but at the same time as this was his Start of Darkness, he is well-aware that Kakashi was forced into that situation and later admits that it's not Kakashi's fault that he became what he did, but rather the world's fault.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Kakashi and Gai face off against Obito and inquire as to why he fell to darkness, he gives various examples of how the ninja world is corrupt and needing of reformation. While his ambition of replacing reality with an illusion is self-centered and inherently evil, no one denied the evil that exists in the ninja world, nor the mistakes that Obito's fellow ninja made during the wars in particular. Even Minato apologizes to Obito for his absence during the Third Shinobi world war, when his pupils needed his assistance more than ever. Also, Kakashi explains to Obito- after defeating the former in a clash- that he struggled with the same resentful sentiments and cynicism that befell Obito, with the only difference being in the outcome, where he decided to work toward a brighter, "good" solution to the corruption in the ninja world, thanks to being inspired by Obito's and Naruto's heroism.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
    • Kakashi eventually deduced the reason for his frustration in dealing with Naruto. Obito's Will of Fire had never actually burned out, and his actions and unwillingness to acknowledge this were causing him inner turmoil that was tearing him up inside. Obito starts to envision the way his life would have turned out if he had returned to Konoha when Rin died, rejoined his friends as allies, and even going so far as to imagine himself as Hokage, despite not consciously understanding why.
    • Obito is truly an oddity within his own clan in that he never fully succumbed to his people's Curse of Hatred, a curse that dominates the fate of the Uchiha, their lives and their dooms. Part of him always cherished his Will of Fire, his comrades and his village. It reawakens when he turns on Madara, and starts ripping the Ten Tails from his former mentor and also later Black Zetsu reveals that Obito wished and prayed that Naruto would be safe, he would stop Madara and succeed where he failed.
  • Just Between You and Me: He does this at least once: such as when he explains his plan to the Kage because he needs them to know it to be able to make his move.
    • Though it should be noted that he tends not to talk about some important details his plans or very vague therein. For example even though he said at Five Kage summit that he needs Eight and Nine-Tails to complete his plan, he didn't mention that he only needed a small part of each of the Tailed Beasts to finish his plan. And though he mentioned that he was going to use Mass Hypnosis on the whole world with the help of the moon, he didn't say how exactly he was going to do it. So when he becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki and releases the World Tree, he uses a large number of shinobi who tried to stop him to feed this tree and activate Infinite Tsukuyomi.
  • Just Toying with Them: He loves to mess around with people.
    • This is pretty much his entire guise as Tobi, pretending to be a worthless fool, while taking refuge in the fact that he is more or less invulnerable. He literally dances around the eight-man squad in pursuit of Sasuke to stall for time. Even after revealing himself as "Madara", he retains his tendency to joke around and hide certain abilities, all to infuriate others while being untouchable.
    • Rather than using the Ten Tails to murder everyone outright, he chooses to kill them off gradually just to make them suffer the loss of their comrades and show them how horrible the real world is.
    • Averted since becoming the Jinchuuriki of the Ten Tails. It took him 4 seconds to rip apart the defenses of the Ninja army and tear through the revived Hokages. Only because the Hokages are immortal zombies, they survived. And then averted again after he manages to control its power and tries to disintegrate Minato, Sasuke and Naruto right away. He finally releases the Ten Tails's true form and wipes out most of the Shinobi Alliance so he can complete the Eye of the Moon plan.
  • Karmic Nod: When he is dying, Black Zetsu contemptuously says that he will end up Dying Alone, having lost everyone dear to him, being hated by everyone else and failing at his goals. Obito says:
  • Keet: Usually whenever he's around Deidara. He later drops the act.
  • Kick the Dog: He's been kicking Naruto from day one but fully hits his stride after Neji's Heroic Sacrifice, spending an inordinate amount of time rubbing it in Naruto's face.
  • Killed Off for Real: After surviving more things that should have killed him than any other character, he's killed courtesy of Kaguya ĹŚtsutsuki, who turns his body to ash. Admittedly he was in the process of dying through several of these near-deaths, he just got temporary reprieves that allowed him to live a little longer.
  • The Klutz: He behaved like this as part of his Obfuscating Stupidity.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Probably the largest example in the series. He started as The Klutz of Akatsuki but eventually turned out to be a Not-So-Harmless Villain when it was revealed that he is the mastermind behind the Akatsuki and that he was responsible for the Nine-Tails' Attack on Konoha. It's taken even further when his next appearance brought in a whole new villain competency level, as he initiates the war on the horizon with his entire army of Expendable Mooks at his command, in addition to former, undead comrades, each of whom is an S-rank criminal, including his own Six Paths of Pain made out of former Jinchuuriki; with the Gold and Silver Brothers who are mini-Jinchuuriki in their own right with the treasured tools of the series' Physical God in their possession, in addition to summoning the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path that doubles as a tank and the container for the nine different Eldritch Abominations. And then he revives the Ten Tails and takes his under control and turns the tables of the Curb-Stomp Battle against the Alliance by beginning a methodical attack against the Allied Shinobi, nullifying every jutsu they use against him, and he even summons the tree form of the Ten-Tails and has it absorb the chakra of nearby ninja, taking their chakra and killing many, thus using this rising death toll to shatter the determination of the Shinobi Alliance.
  • Know When to Fold Them: In the non-canon movie Road To Ninja, when Naruto beats Menma, he exits him and decides to break the illusion as it's obvious his plan has failed...or so it seems.
    L - P
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Remember how he tore Kurama from Kushina and tried to finish her off while she was exhausted and defenseless? Remember how after that he took control of Kurama and attacked Konoha with Kurama's help, causing the deaths of Naruto's parents? Remember how later this incident led to the Uchiha Clan Massacre in which he participated, causing Sasuke's Start of Darkness? Remember how he manipulated Nagato for his own purposes and mocked Konan after she had regained hope in Naruto's path? Remember when he let Kabuto use all those Edo Tensei zombies to fight their former friends against their will? Remember when he used others' tailed beasts in the struggle against Naruto? Well exactly 17 years since the attack of Kurama on Konoha, he was defeated by the joint force of those two children whose lives he had ruined, with help from Kurama and the other tailed beasts which he used before, along with the Edo Tensei zombies - one of which was Minato, whose death he was responsible for earlier - and now he had Nine-Tailed Beasts torn from his body and, while exhausted and defenseless, got hijacked as a puppet to revive Madara before being forced to fight his friends with no control over his body, and just when he was about to make amends for his sins, Madara mocked Obito and told him that he was behind Rin's death and that he manipulated Obito all this time.
  • Last of His Kind: At the time of the beginning of the series Obito, Sasuke and Itachi are the only true living Uchiha left in the world. Though this is mostly Obito's fault.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: The cover art for volume 68 of the manga shows him as a child, together with Kakashi and Rin, and the obi included with the Japanese edition refers to Obito by name when mentioning his defeat. Quite a spoiler for those still in the dark about Obito being alive, and the series' Big Bad to boot, even for Japanese fans. Volume 67's cover shows him as the Ten Tails' Jinchuuriki, though he is facing away, so it's a bit less spoileriffic. It got so bad that this very page doesn't even bother spoiling him and his identity out.
  • Laughably Evil: He was this as Tobi but then he decided to stop fucking around.
  • The Leader: He is the true leader of the Akatsuki, while he wasn't a founder, his influence led them on a different path which drove the plot of Part II. He served as the Akatsuki’s secret leader up until his unmasking in the Fourth Shinobi World War.
  • Life-or-Limb Decision: His arm is infected by The Virus an enemy spreads by touch so he (non-chalantly) snaps his own arm off, then he punt kicks it into his enemy's face. He's so nonchalant about losing his arm because he can grow or attach a new one as needed.
  • Legacy Character: Plays the role of Madara Uchiha at the real Madara Uchiha's request. Taking the impersonation further, Obito did to Sasuke what Madara did to him: gave him medical treatment after he was badly wounded, then revealed something that pushed him deeper into the Curse of Hatred.
  • Leitmotif: Tobi's Theme is very suitable for him, with its Ominous Pipe Organ, badass tone, and Ominous Latin Chanting.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: He attacked Konoha with help from the Nine-Tailed Fox in order to destroy the village but ultimately failed due to Minato. In the future, he used this defeat to his advantage, framed the Uchiha Clan for the Nine-Tails' attack on Konoha thus worsening the clan's relationship with the village and leading them to plan a coup, and he ultimately helped Itachi in slaughtering the Uchiha clan which allowed him to acquire a large number of Sharingans in his laboratory, and also used Itachi to find a new pawn in the form of Sasuke.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: He sets up such a fight between Sasuke and Danzo.
  • Light Is Not Good: When he becomes the Ten Tails' Jinchuuriki, he's clad almost completely in white, which also becomes his skin and hair color.
  • Lightning Bruiser:
    • In addition to his Intangibility, Tobi has consistently tanked some of the worst injuries in the series and yet survived. He's also a One-Man Army who can keep up in speed with and fight on par with Naruto, Bee, Guy and Kakashi at the same time.
    • Especially when he becomes the Jinchuuriki of the Ten-Tails. At this point, Obito has become the World's Strongest Man, with all 4 Hokages and Madara fearing him. Obito manages to easily withstand and break the Hokages' seal and then proceeds to destroy the First and Second Hokages with terrifying power and speed. Sure, they regenerate due to Edo Tensei, but damn.
  • Living Emotional Crutch:
    • To Kakashi, even while he was "dead". Obito is the most important person in Kakashi's life, and after losing every single member of his original team within the span of a year, the only thing that kept Kakashi going was his devotion to Obito's memory. Kakashi clung to it so strongly that his entire life since then has been one long tribute to his best friend. Rather understandably, learning that Obito was Tobi nearly destroyed him.
    • He also counts as a deconstruction of this trope — Kakashi's devotion to Obito's memory is presented in both a positive and negative light. While it made him into a better person, it was also a literal crutch, as Kakashi was completely unable of living his own life without somehow involving Obito, who went from being his best friend to being his idol. Ultimately, everything Kakashi is and has done since the day Obito "died" has been either an extension or product of Kakashi's promise to Obito and his inability to move on from his "death". While learning Obito was Tobi was heartbreaking, it was also the event that finally allowed Kakashi to see him as a person again. And, after Obito dies once more, passing on his dream to his best friend, Kakashi is finally able to move past him and all the tragedy he's endured to finally live his own life.
  • Living on Borrowed Time: After surviving several life-ending side-effects in a row thanks to Naruto's life-giving chakra, Sakura notes that Obito isn't going to survive long after this battle is over, meaning he was already at his limit even before he sacrificed himself.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • His ability to make himself intangible. Of course, he can't attack while phased, since it would just go through his foe. The best time to attack, then, is when he attacks. He does try to get around this when fighting Minato by using chains that trail behind him, in order to catch foes who he phases through.
    • Also, due to shared Mangekyo Sharingans, Tobi's phasing is absolutely useless against Kakashi; he can match phases with Tobi and attack him either way.
  • Loss of Identity: Deliberately tries to invoke this, burying his old identity under layers of Obfuscating Stupidity and other lies. When it turns out he's neither the harmless goofball or the stoic Uchiha Madara, he claims that he doesn't have a real self and is just a vessel for his master plan. However this is simply how he runs away from his painful past and his internal conflicts.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: Played Straight, although going by the non-canon movie Road To Ninja his goal isn't to create an illusion, but to actually replace reality with it, so that everyone can be a winner, and tragedies such as Rin's death over a pointless conflict would never come to happen again.
  • Love Makes You Evil: The reason he's doing all this is because Kakashi failed to protect Rin, the woman Obito loved deeply and whose death made both men empty shells of their former selves. He doesn't blame Kakashi since War Is Hell and the world is constantly sinking into conflict; he decided to destroy a world where loved ones die and heroes fail so that he can replace it with a reality of love, winners and peace. Ultimately, it is not just his love for Rin that turned him evil — it was his love for his entire team and humanity, and his inability to accept a world of suffering.
  • Made of Iron: After Minato both shreds him with a Rasengan and stabs him in the gut, Tobi is still standing, and even casually chats for a bit. He also blocks a blow from Zabuza's sword with one arm.
  • Magical Eye: Obviously because he's a Uchiha he possess the Sharingan, but he's also one of the few Uchiha since the time of the warring clans before the ninja villages to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan. Overuse of the latter's dĹŤjutsu gradually deteriorates the user's eyesight to the point of blindness, but Obito seems to be an exception to the rule; he's kept his nearly constantly active, and yet his eyesight hasn't suffered in the slightest. This is implied to be due to half his body being made of Senju Cells, which constantly rejuvenate him. Interestingly Kakashi, a non-Uchiha who has his left eye, has noted that he's starting to become short-sighted from overusing the Mangekyo Sharingan.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Despite having half his body crushed under a giant rock, he's extremely calm... though when his teammates leave and the cave-in is completed, his thoughts are revealed to be much more in turmoil.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He was the real leader of Akatsuki, and controlled the Fourth Mizukage for years.
  • The Man in Front of the Man: Despite being Pain's real boss, he pretended to be Deidara's Sidekick.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He may tell you the horrible truth, including his role in it, and still bend you to his will.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Obito has worn a total of three masks, not counting Guruguru. His first was orange with a black flame pattern and a single eye hole, worn during his attack on Konoha and the Uchiha Clan Massacre. His second was an orange spiral mask with a single eye-hole, worn during his time as "Tobi". His third, crafted to be extra-durable, was white with two eye holes and resembles a Rinnegan with the tomoe pattern of a Sharingan.
  • Masquerading As the Unseen: At first he is just a masked member of Akatsuki who uses Obfuscating Stupidity to come off as a ditz. When he later drops the act, he makes the claim that he is Madara Uchiha, an infamous shinobi who was a contemporary of the First Hokage. Despite the fact Madara is supposed to be dead, Tobi's able to back up his claim enough that nobody can completely rule out that it's him. However, later we learn that "Madara" is really Obito Uchiha, and he was using Madara's infamy to further his own goals.
  • This Means War!: He declares war on the entire ninja world after the Kages refuse to hand over Naruto and Bee, starting the fourth great ninja war.
  • Mind Manipulation: He can hypnotize people with a glance.
  • Mirror Character:
    • His similarities to Naruto are commented on by a number of people. In particular, Obito himself sees his younger self in Naruto and during the war tries to break Naruto's will as a form of validation for his plans. Kakashi even accuses him of trying to prove to himself that he's in the right by using Naruto as a stand-in for himself.
    • Between him and Kabuto there are a number of similarities. Both of them were involved in the Shinobi World War and were left for dead only to be found by the Evil Mentor and taken in as a student. When said Evil Mentor died, they both took said Evil Mentor and tried to become them and both went from joke level fighters to Kage level enemies. To add to it, both of them pulled a Heel–Face Turn after said Evil Mentor returned from the dead and decided to embrace who they actually were. Both are also Foils to Naruto who use this to their advantage.
    • And although he denies this, there are also similarities between him and Nagato. Both of them in their youth were Wide Eyed Idealists who were involved in the Shinobi World War. Both of them were in a team of three people and most of all wanted to protect their friends. Both of them fell under the manipulation of another person after witnessing the suicide of their best friend/love interest and eventually abandoned their former idealism and became Well Intentioned Extremists. Both of them began to hide under a different name and eventually became the cause of death of their former sensei. And both of them ultimately pulled a Heel–Face Turn shortly before their deaths, realizing the error of their ways and trying to correct their mistake by resurrecting all those whom they killed.
    • He's also not so different from Sasuke if you can believe it. Both are of the Uchiha Clan, both were cheerful children, both constantly sought the love/attention of an individual who they thought didn't care for them enough. For Obito it was Rin while Sasuke sought attention from his father. Both constantly compared themselves to a character who was The Ace and fell short in comparison. For Obito it was Kakashi and for Sasuke it was Itachi. When said person whose interest they longed for died they had drastic changes in behaviour. Sasuke had his clan's demise while Obito had Rin's demise, both at the hands of said Ace who committed the deed unwillingly (Itachi was ordered and hated himself for it and Kakashi's hand was forced). And both are ultimately hurt people lashing out at the world for their unfair childhoods, and the events that broke them.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's got a tendency to drop in and explain the plot as needed. Of course, whether or not he's telling the truth at any given time is another matter.
  • Mystical White Hair: After using Rinne Tensei his hair turns white and stays white as the Ten Tails's Jinchuuriki.
  • Near-Villain Victory: He becomes the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki, releases the World Tree and virtually activates Infinite Tsukuyomi. But at the last moment the Alliance united all their strength, and Naruto and Sasuke cut it in half and pulled the tailed beasts out of him.
  • Never Found the Body: This is what happened with him — although he was undoubtedly buried under a ton of rock and understandably believed to be killed, his team was unable to secure his corpse due to both their mission and the insurmountable amount of debris that (as they thought) had crushed his body.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Well, he's an Uchiha, so you really can't be surprised. After his death he reverts to his younger self and immediately uses his shiny new Mangekyo Sharingans to teleport back to the world of the living, where he somehow transfers his eyes to Kakashi, stronger than they ever were when Obito was alive.
  • Nice Guy: Obito was very kind-hearted in childhood.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Ironically, he's arguably the biggest contributor to the peaceful state of affairs at the end of the series. By serving as a sort of ultimate enemy, Obito provided the shinobi nations of the world with the impetus to set aside their previous grievances and stand together for a common cause by serving as a common enemy for all of them. In a sense, he's the person who gave the shinobi world one big push towards unification and a lasting peace. It's arguable that, if he hadn't shown up at Five Kage Summit and declared war on everybody, things would have been much more tense between the Shinobi villages.
  • No Body Left Behind: Kaguya's attack completely disintegrates him into ashes, thus preventing Naruto's Healing Hands from saving him. Not that it would have mattered either way.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: This is a man who only wanted to protect his friends and who sacrificed his life for the sake of one of said friends. Fate's response was crushing half of his body and getting him trapped in the clutches of his evil ancestor who destroyed everything that he held dear in the cruelest possible way, thus causing his Start of Darkness.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: During his act Kiba tries to attack him. And what does he do? He just skips out of the way. The anime takes this so much further, as he also does this to all of the Leaf ninja and after doing it to Sakura, he loudly shouts "OlĂ©!".
  • No One Should Survive That!:
    • Long before he become Tobi, Obito shouldn't have survived a boulder crushing the entire right half of his body at 13 years old. Fortunately for Obito, Madara has found and saved him, by replaced the damaged half of his body with Senju cells.
    • If a tailed beast is removed from their body, the Jinchuuriki will die. Only in rare instances where the host has enough stamina will they live afterwards. Fortunately for Obito the Ten Tails' husk (aka the Gedo Statue) is still inside him, and its life force serves to keep him alive. When it's removed by Madara, Black Zetsu keeps him alive by fusing with him despite having just been forced to use Rinne Tensei.
    • He dodges death once again thanks to Naruto's Healing Hands and cements his position as one of the most nigh unkillable anime characters of all time. It takes the literal act of a goddess to finally kill him for good, though Sakura notes with all the life-ending acts he just went through back to back he wouldn't have survived for long after the war even if he hadn't been killed.
  • Not Me This Time: Subverted when he claims that he was not behind the Nine-Tailed Fox attacking Konoha despite confirming or expanding on much of what Sasuke was told about him. A later flashback arc shows that he really was.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Initially seems like a somewhat goofy member of Akatsuki, but fans knew something was up when a sword slash passed right through him and he survived a massive explosion. In his true persona he is an extremely ruthless, competent and determined enemy.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He has been using this tactic as Tobi.
  • Odd Name Out: His Kamui technique. While it is derived from Japanese mythology like other Mangekyo abilities, it actually refers to a term used in Anui folklore instead of Shinto.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Inverted, and it's like meth to him. He seems to delight in messing with people's minds in the most funny way possible- just ask Konan.
Tobi: I ended up saving you too... I believe a "thank you" is in order.
      Konan: ...
    • Still, he's susceptible to it himself. After all, apparently Kabuto has known all along that this Madara... isn't the real one. He finally reveals that to the world by summoning the original Madara to the battlefield with Edo Tensei. The mere existence of this knowledge scared Tobi into letting Kabuto join up.
    • When Naruto manages to destroy his mask, the only word he utters is "Shit!".
  • One-Man Army: He's an incredibly powerful ninja, able to hold his own against multiple enemies at once since he as young as 14.
  • One-Winged Angel: After becoming the Ten Tails' Jinchuuriki: he's still human-like, but has scales all over his body. He later manages to suppress the Ten-Tails and assume an even stronger form, resembling the Sage of Six Paths.
  • Out-Gambitted: Did this to Madara. Obito knew that Madara was going to use him for own resurrection and he knew that Madara placed a seal on his heart which prevented him from becoming the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki. So he goaded Kakashi into stabbing him in the heart to remove the seal and become the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki.
  • Paper Fan of Doom: He carries a large and apparently quite heavy fan which turns out to be the same one Madara used in his time.
  • Peaceful in Death: He is calm while he's slowly disintegrating after taking one of Kaguya's attacks to help the heroes.
  • People Puppets: He can use chakra rods to control people as the Paths of Pain.
  • Personality Powers: A very creative example. Obito hates reality and wants to escape it by creating a dream world. His powers allow him to literally do so by teleporting all or part of his body (as well as other people) to an alternate dimension.
    • Shortly after he returns to his old-self, Obito regains his left eye, which allows him absorb things in his sight. Obito mostly to absorb things that could hurt others, dies using it to save Kakashi's life from Kaguya attack, showcasing his status as someone who protects others, even if at his own cost.
  • The Pessimist: "This world is completely worthless... there is nothing left in it but misery." He thinks he is living in a Crapsack World (with a fair amount of justification, it must be said) and resents how This Is Reality is in effect with regards to heroes, ie. that very often heroes actually fail. As such, he thinks the only place heroes and dreams can truly exist is in a dream world, and he intends to create just that, even if he has to enact an Assimilation Plot to do it. Basically, he isn't a nihilist, given his idealism. He just thinks that the world he lives in is a nihilistic mess, and has an unusual approach regarding how to improve it.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • In the anime, when he sees Yahiko sacrificing himself to protect Nagato and Konan, he remembers Rin and promises that the three of them would reunite once the Infinite Tsukuyomi started.
    • While he has no problem in manipulating others to achieve his goals, he still acknowledges their sacrifice, like when he says that he couldn't have gone this far without Sasori, Hidan, Kakuzu and Deidara.
    • He tells Kakashi that he shouldn't feel guilty that he couldn't keep his promise to him, and that it's not Kakashi's fault that he became what he is. Instead, Obito says that it was the world they live in that made him how he is.
  • The Philosopher: To generalize: "We live in a Crapsack World", "Humans Are Bastards" and "No such thing as hope."
  • Physical God: After becoming the Ten Tails' jinchuuriki his power is so great that the four revived Hokages, who are not only the strongest of their time (Hashirama alone could suppress Kurama and beat Madara at the same time) but now nigh unkillable zombies, fear their combined power won't be enough to handle him. Considering it took him some 4 seconds to annihilate all their barriers and rip apart the First and the Second, their fear is quite justified. It gets worse when he gains control of the Ten Tails and stops mutating into a mindless animal. He becomes a demonic version of the Sage of the Six Paths and proceeds to cut the Fourth's right arm and leave a disintegration bomb in his stump while the latter is in the middle of teleportation with barely a move.
  • Plant Person: The right half of his body is composed of Zetsu's cells.
  • Playing with Fire: A given due to his Uchiha lineage, as members of his clan have an affinity for Fire Release.
  • Pocket Dimension: He can open a gate to his own pocket dimension with his Sharingan, which is a black void full of white boxes.
  • Power Duplication: The Sharingan is capable of memorizing any jutsu it observes.
  • Power Nullifier: He and Kakashi can No-Sell each other's Kamui. As the host of the Ten-Tails, his attacks are not only extremely destructive, but he can cancel the effects of any ninjutsu used on him, and his attacks do the same to anything they connect with. This leaves even Edo Tensei zombies vulnerable to his power. He cannot, however, negate attacks done in Sage Mode, which allows Naruto to score a hit.
  • The Power of Love: His love for Rin and his former team is powerful enough to make even the Ten Tails submit to his will.
  • Power Parasite: Just by stealing the Rinnegan from Nagato, Tobi's gained the Six Paths of Pain (whom he's replaced with the six deceased Jinchuuriki) and controls the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Furthermore, in addition to his own Sharingan, he's obtained Senju DNA, allowing him access to Wood Style.
  • Power Up Let Down: Downplayed. The Rinnegan he took from Nagato did give him great power and new abilities, but as he is not their original owner and does not have the massive chakra reserves that would otherwise compensate, his ability to actually use it is significantly more limited compared to it's other wielders. He's unable to make full use of the Rinnegan's power and could barely handle using just one of Madara's eyes, with him admitting he's not entirely sure how the hell Nagato could use them so well.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: One of the few in the series. He's extremely good about avoiding pointless and/or unnecessarily risky fights. In addition he's fairly nice to his subordinates (as long as they don't betray him) and will help them out when they're in a jam. Not so much because he particularly cares about them, but because he values loyalty and there's simply no advantage in having your subordinates hate you. It's also notable that he seldom tries to force anyone to do anything and usually just talks people into doing what he wants. Though this doesn't prevent him from being quite ruthless and fond of taking hostages and even threatening children.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: He gives one to Konan.
Tobi: When my illusion ends, so will your life. But first I'll make you reveal where you hid the Rinnegan.
  • Psychological Projection:
    • Repeatedly does this when trying to break Naruto's idealism and his will to fight during the climax of the war. Kakashi realizes that Obito's Will of Fire did not truly die out following his Despair Event Horizon, but instead remained dormant. Obito knew this as well, which was why his efforts to crush Naruto's idealism was his way of quashing whatever remained of the old Obito, allowing him to push on with the Eye of the Moon Plan without regrets.
    • A more subtle one is his Breaking Lecture to Konan where he insults Nagato as a fool seeking to validate his own existence, which happens to match Obito, whose dream was to become Hokage so people will acknowledge him, as well.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Type B. Depending on the viewpoint, his goal is either childish or overly idealistic: He wants to replace reality with a dream where everyone can be happy and the good guys always win. The psychopathic part comes from the fact that he is willing to kill lots of people to accomplish this, as he reasons that they will be resurrected anyway once he accomplishes his goal.
  • Psychotic Smirk: He sports one of these after his mask is shattered, and Kakashi asks if he truly is Obito, pointing out that he no longer considers himself to be "anyone" but they are free to call him by that name if they wish.
  • Puzzle Boss: Certainly takes this role in the story. Ever since he survived Sasuke's attack and Deidara's C4, everyone tried to figure out his powers and weaknesses. Kakashi is the first out to fully figure out his powers since he has the same sharingan. Like most Puzzle Bosses, he turns into an Anti-Climax Boss after his powers are figured out. Until he stopped holding back and used the other powers at his disposal and gave everyone a run for their money.
    R - S
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Played with. He is nominally the real leader of Akatsuki and extremely powerful, but Nagato is far and away more powerful than he is. Konan also gives him a battle for his life that costs him greatly.
  • Rasputinian Death: In about a single day, he got stabbed through the heart, mind-raped by an ancient quasi-deity, half-disintegrated himself, cut nearly in half, got the Tailed Beasts ripped out of him, forced to perform Rinne Tensei, loses a piece of life support (Gedo Statue), stabbed in the chest by Madara, loses another piece of life support (Black Zetsu), burns his and Sakura's chakra to traverse Kaguya's dimensions, and finally gets killed by Kaguya's ash bones. Black Zetsu jokingly compares him to a cockroach once he's finally gone. Even then, he somehow manages to use Kamui in the afterlife to give Kakashi a temporary pair of Sharingan.
  • Reality Warper: He can use Izanagi to cheat death for a much longer period than Danzo.
  • The Real Remington Steele: He is this once he's the Walking Spoiler.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • To Konan, after she turns on him for Naruto and decides to kill him, fighting for the new hope.
Tobi: There is no peace! There can be no hope! Nagato only believed in Naruto to try to comfort his own pitiful existence!
Tobi: You called me the Darkness, didn't you? Then I will make you wilt. I will take your little rainbow bridge and its seven colors and plunge it all into darkness!.
    • Also gives a brutal one to his former sensei Minato during the war.
Minato: Obito, wasn't your dream to become Hokage? What led you to this!?
Tobi: We're way past the point of lectures, wouldn't you agree sensei? When it came to life-changing events, you were always a step behind.note
Tobi: Despite being my master, you failed to recognize your own pupil... you've always had that oblivious nature about you, from the moment I met you. I can't help but pity you... the hallowed martyr... shamed in front of his living son.
    • And finally, he had an exchange of these with Madara when he arose from Black Zetsu's possession and confronted Madara.
Madara: [while explaining how the world is hell and Obito is an extension of himself and his plan to remake it] Obito Uchiha, with his Uchiha chakra, challenged Kakashi Hatake, sought the title of Hokage, and yearned for Rin Nohara. But because his power was a deception, he ended up losing *everything.* This entire world is hell! Have you forgotten that!?
Tobi: [after planting his hand in Madara's gut intending to take back the Ninetails and save Naruto] Those who truly lead others would never step over their comrades' corpses, even if their own ends up being stepped upon. I won't let you step on me anymore. I know now that letting someone use your name and handle things for you isn't the same as truly entrusting them with a task. I am not you. The current me is... the one who wanted to be Hokage, Obito Uchiha!
  • Redemption Demotion: Justified because his defeat left him nearly dead.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Becomes a Death Seeker immediately after his defeat (the jutsu that revived Madara was meant to revive everyone else). He donated the only thing that kept him mobile to Naruto to save him, and it was also his Heroic Sacrifice that helped Naruto live another day.
  • Redemption Rejection: Attempts one. When in Obito's mindscape, Naruto tries to convince him into performing a Heel–Face Turn. Obito resists, but eventually reaches out to Naruto's extended hand... and starts throttling him. It doesn't work though, since Naruto can see within Obito's mindscape the regrets he has buried and refuses to acknowledge, and tells him that if he truly doesn't want redemption then he needs to stop showing him such things. In the end Obito accepts that he does indeed regret his actions.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His Sharingan, which he almost always has activated.
  • Red Herring: There were theories and degrees of evidence that he was everyone from Danzo to Obito and several others. Eventually he was revealed to be Uchiha Madara, but even then about half the fandom argued that this was yet another ruse. They were right, but it's a testament to the writing that so many disagreed or couldn't decide either way. Tobi himself claims to be "no one" and that he doesn't care about his own identity, but he does seem to care about concealing his face...
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: In childhood Obito is a cheerful, outgoing and energetic Keet compared to Kakashi's sarcastic The Stoic act.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Uniquely, while Kamui does have its roots in Eastern mythology, unlike other Sharingan abilties, it isn't derived from Shinto mythology, instead being derived from Ainu mythology.
  • The Reveal: He's not Madara Uchiha. He's actually Obito Uchiha.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Subverted. After he saw Kakashi kill Rin, presumably forced by something the Mist ninja had done to her, he utterly slaughtered the Mist shinobi... but he did not touch Kakashi, declaring he no longer cared for his ex-teammate.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: During his "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Minato when he accuses him of constant failures and of constant delay when it is necessary, he is not too wrong. Despite the fact that he was one of the fastest and strongest shinobi in the world, Minato could not protect his former team, specifically Obito (from being crushed and then taken in by Madara) and Rin (from dying). If had he managed to save either of them, most of the current story wouldn't have had to happen. But also Obito accuses Minato of failing to recognize him when the Nine-Tails attacked Konoha; that actually wasn't Minato's fault. He couldn't have known his student survived, and even then, knowing Tobi's identity that night wouldn't have changed anything. Kurama still had to be stopped, and trying to convince Obito to stop his plans would have been pointless. So technically Obito was not wrong but the fact which he uses as an argument himself are wrong. Kurama, however, is also sort of wrong, as Naruto discovering Obito's identity and his backstory was capable of convincing him to stop and redeem himself, which was further reinforced by Kakashi and Minato later on.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After witnessing Rin being killed by Kakashi, Obito loses it, awakens his Mangekyo Sharingan, and proceeds to murder every single Mist ninja that comes to attack him.
  • Sand In My Eyes: In childhood when he'd blame tears on dust getting in his eyes, others would point out the implausibility coming from someone always wearing goggles.
  • Sanity Slippage: Obito is mentally unwell, he suffered from a severe psychotic break the day Rin died and lost all faith in the universe around him. He lives his life firmly believing that the real world is false and that he needs to create a new one that will have everyone as it should be.
  • Sdrawkcab Alias: His alias "Tobi" is just his name with the Kanji reversed.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Firmly believed in this in childhood. He thought it was better to help Rin than to complete the mission.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: He has become the jinchuuriki of the Ten Tails and thus, the second Sage of Six Paths.
  • Secondary Color Nemesis: He's worn at least two different orange masks as Tobi, and he later wears a purple cloak in the Fourth Shinobi War.
  • Seeks Another's Resurrection: Madara's plan was for Obito to use Nagato to resurrect him with the Six Paths. However, Obito decided to hijack Madara's Eye of the Moon Plan in order to create a world — albeit an illusory one — where Rin Nohara had never died.
  • Self-Made Superpowers: Obito Uchiha is a skilled surgeon and well-versed with genetics and transplants. He made up for his lack of natural talent by mastering Hashirama's cells, allowing him to phase through all attacks for 10 minutes with 1 Sharingan, and later transplants a Rinnegan stolen from Nagato's corpse.
  • Shadow Archetype: He is the true dark reflection of what Naruto would've become if no one was there to save him from going down a Start of Darkness after a loved one's death.
  • Shadow Dictator: Ran the show in Kirigakure putting the Fourth Mizukage under his thumb, from when he left Madara's tutelage when he was roughly age 15, to some time into Part 2, where he is between 29 and 31 giving him at least 15 years in charge of the Mist Village.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: When Kakashi asks Obito why he's doing this, Obito responds by telling him to shut up and tries to kill him.
  • Significant Anagram:
    • Tobi is very similar to his actual name, Obito. You could think of the English spelling to be something like 'Toobi' in that regard or his original name to be Obit, with the extra 'o' at the end stemming from the tendency for Japanese pronunciations to end in vowels regardless.
    • It should also be noted that when both Tobi and Obito are written kanji, they are written in the same two characters, simply switched. It was that obvious.
    • Tobi can also mean Ten-Tailed, which goes a long way towards foreshadowing his eventual transformation into the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki.
  • Signature Move: Kamui
  • Single-Target Sexuality: He never loved anyone but Rin; the whole reason he agreed to go along with Madara's plan was so he could create a world where he could see her again (since Madara also made him unable to kill himself). When he finally is allowed to die, he finds Rin has been waiting for him all this time.
  • The Social Expert: He can accurately predict the actions and motivations of virtually anyone he encounters. Also he can manipulate them, either by subtly corrupting their own goals or simply imposing his own beliefs on them. This is best seen in the existence of Akatsuki, its wildly-differing members working together because they believed the organisation would further their own ends when in actuality, they were mere tools that Tobi used to achieve his plans. He was also able to use whole countries to his advantage, so he used the overall stability and suspicion between the countries to increase his own power by providing Akatsuki as the mercenaries carrying out orders and receiving remuneration for work performed.
  • Space Master: Kamui, his Mangekyo Sharingan techique, allows him to teleport himself and others into another dimension.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Massively screws up Itachi's postmortem plans for Sasuke by telling him things he was probably better off not knowing.
    • His reluctance to resurrect Madara and wish to take control of the Moon’s Eye Plan for himself makes him an unknowing one to Black Zetsu, who wants to resurrect Kaguya via using Madara's body once he becomes the Ten Tails' jinchuuriki. To that end, Black Zetsu's forced to go behind Obito's back to lead Kabuto to Madara's corpse, and eventually has to possess the defeated Obito make him revive Madara properly. Also his Heel–Face Turn and his wish to help Team 7 becomes a spanner to Kaguya who plans to get rid of them, and ultimately becomes the cause of her defeat and re-sealing.
  • Spare Body Parts: Can easily replace body parts lost in battle.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: After death Nagato he openly mocks him, believing that he was too easily influenced by the words of some boy. He later in his battle with Konan, told her that Nagato only believed in Naruto to try to comfort his own pitiful existence but not for the sake of true peace.
  • Stalker with a Crush: With Rin. Obito has a number of pictures of her on his wall and, well, a few of them look like they were taken without her knowledge.
  • Staff of Authority: After taking control of the Ten Tails he forms a khakkhara out of its chakra.
  • The Starscream: To Madara. He was using Madara in order to become the jinchuuriki of the Ten Tails himself and never had any intention of reviving him.
  • Start of Darkness: Rin's death broke him pretty badly.
  • Story-Breaker Power: He as host of the Ten-Tails, has a working facsimile of the Sage of the Six Paths' powers, and has shown the ability to negate zombie regeneration, fire Tailed Beast Bombs and erect impassable barriers, as well as use a new element that is as malleable as the Kazekage's sand (although in a more fluid and highly cohesive fashion) and is as destructive as the Tsuchikage's Dust Release or beyond it (essentially meaning liquid black holes that violate the Law of Conservation by erasing all matter not protected by natural energy); Naruto's Sage Mode is just about the only thing shown to be capable of hurting him, but his regeneration is on par with Tsunade's.
    • To a lesser extent, his Kamui can also be considered one. It allows him to transport parts of his body into his own private dimension whenever he's about to get hit, allowing the opponent's attack to just phase harmlessly through him and making it damn near impossible to even hit him. Naturally, the only people shown to get around this are Minato who has his own broken space-time ninjutsu, Konan who spent years studying this ability and coming up with a way to counter it, and Kakashi who's also able to use Kamui.
    • Obito's Sharingan genjutsu is powerful enough to trap even a Perfect Jinchuriki in an illusion, even though perfect Jinchuriki are supposed to be immune to that. It's too unfortunate that Obito never uses genjutsu all that much when he fights.
  • Stranger Behind the Mask: In-universe, Naruto spends a good amount of effort trying to rip off Tobi's mask and finally succeeds, only to result in this trope as Obito had been presumed dead since before Naruto was born.
  • Stepford Smiler: In childhood he hid behind the act of a happy-go-lucky idiot pretending to he happy and cheerful, to escape his loneliness and pain.
  • Street Urchin: Obito is an orphan. He grew up not knowing who his parents were, leaving him alone and forced to fend for himself. This sad childhood led Obito to dream of one day becoming Hokage, so that everyone would acknowledge his existence. And it can only be called irony that he indirectly orphaned Naruto, who in turn, grew up not knowing who his parents were, leaving him alone and forced to fend for himself, and now shares Obito's former-dream of becoming the Hokage, so that the village would accept him too.
  • The Stoic: He was so this before the mask came off, at least in terms of demeanour. Though he certainly wasn't this as a child. And rapidly becomes less so after he loses the mask and is forced to face up to his past.
  • Subverted Innocence: Let's just say that, in real world terms, people idealistic, kindhearted, and clearsighted enough to perceive all the horrible parts of the world and wishing for a kinder, more just, and utopian world (which is a perfectly valid viewpoint), do not tend to be mass-murdering baby-killers.
  • Superpower Lottery: He really won the jackpot. Not only is he an Uchiha, his Kamui is incredibly powerful, and the main reason he went from pushover to Kage level in a just a few years. More to the point it apparently has no precedent at all, so it might well be the rarest ability in the series. Especially when he becomes the Ten Tails' host.
  • Super-Senses: The Sharingan can see chakra as well as slow the user's perception of reality, allowing them more time to react.
  • Super-Strength: He snapped an arm off of its shoulder with just the grip of his fingers, and blocked a giant ass sword with his forearm. Especially as a child when he destroy the Hidden Mist Ninjas in a Roaring Rampage of Revenge.
  • Super-Toughness: Easily blocked a huge sword with his arm with no damage. Also, after Minato manages to blast him with a Rasengan and immediately stab him in the torso, Tobi while injured doesn't seem too bothered by it and even chats for a bit. Especially once he becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki, he can tank attacks from the guy who beat Madara like they were nothing.
    T - Y
  • The Svengali: To Sasuke, manipulating him in order to be an asset to his plan and eliminating enemies for him.
  • Take Up My Sword: A villainous example. After saving him, an elderly Madara passed his knowledge, identity, and plan on to Obito. Subverted in that part of the plan was to eventually revive Madara, so this was meant to be temporary.
  • Taking the Bullet: Kakashi did this for Obito in childhood, which got his eye cut out; Obito returned the favor, resulting in his supposed death. But later happens again when he chooses to warp away the erosive bone Kaguya fires at Kakashi instead of the one she fired at him, this time actually dying.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: It happened to him twice in fact:
  • Teen Genius: He was only 14 years old during Kurama's attack on Konoha but he already could control the Nine-Tails using only one eye and fight with one of the Kage at the same time.
  • Teens Are Monsters: He's the same age as Kakashi, which means he was in his teens when he first attacked Konoha and formed Akatsuki.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • Obito and Kabuto. Each has mutually exclusive long-term plans and is fully aware the other will backstab them at some point.
    • Obito and Madara may need each other but that does not mean they like it. Madara thinks that Obito is being too impatient with the Moon-Eye Plan and wants to wipe out the Shinobi Alliance first to make sure they are not a bother. Obito thinks Madara is too immature to wield such power and this is just an excuse for him to test out the Ten Tails' powers like a child with a new toy. Then there's also the matter of Madara needing Obito to sacrifice himself using Rinne Tensei in order to revive him, which Obito isn't exactly thrilled about.
  • Teleportation: He can teleport himself anywhere he wants, and can teleport others into an alternate dimension that seems to exist within his Sharingan.
  • That Man Is Dead: Even after his true identity as Obito is revealed he still claims that he's "No One." Subverted after his Heel–Face Turn, as he declares he is not Madara, but rather Obito Uchiha.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: He survives having half his body crushed as a teen, being blown up by 600 billion explosive tags, getting stabbed in the heart, having 7 spiritual behemoths (and a small part of 2 more) ripped out of his body, performing a suicidal technique, sleeping through a world ending Assimilation Plot and only finally dies after being turned to ashed by the 'goddess' of the Narutoverse.
  • Together in Death: With Rin, who has been waiting and watching over Obito this entire time.
  • Too Broken to Break: There's this image of Obito against Kakashi in which the latter made a hole in Obito's chest and he stands up as if nothing happened to him. This image quickly became a Memetic Mutation, being used by loners about love deceptions as they have no heart to be broken, and having a lot of deriviated memes, some funnier (or more depressed) than others.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • In Kakashi Gaiden, Obito initially put up a poor showing in combat and cowered before the enemy. After awakening his Sharingan, he becomes a more confident in addition to gaining ocular powers, allowing him to keep up with the enemy Stone shinobi who previously gave him trouble.
    • Tobi used to be Obito. The guy who was always in everyone's shadow. Was Always Second Best to everyone, and was basically the Dead Last to all of Konoha. But after becoming Tobi he can fight on par with Minato, control the Nine-Tails, learned how to warp reality, and effortlessly manipulates people like Nagato, Itachi and the whole freaking Ninja World like they're his puppets! DAMN! Being evil really ups the IQ points. And the badass points. Especially when he becomes the Jinchuuriki of the Ten-Tails, and in the process becomes the World's Strongest Man since the Sage of Six Paths.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Went from being a carefree, happy-go-lucky kid to wanting to force the entire world into a dream world because he saw hope and peace as laughable concepts.
  • Torso with a View: Intentionally has Kakashi pierce his chest to show his Heart Trauma and keeps it afterwards, until Kakashi dispells the genjutsu. Later played straight when Kakashi impales him with a Raikiri enhanced kunai.
  • Total Party Kill: When it becomes clear that Naruto has figured out how to damage him in his Jinchuuriki form, he immediately defaults to setting up a barrier and a four-way tailed-beast bomb that will kill the entire alliance in one attack. Fortunately, Naruto and Minato teleported everyone out of the barrier at the last second. But then, he merely releases the Ten Tails's true form, the World Tree, to consume everyone's chakra, this time mostly succeeding.
  • Touch of Death: He can extract a person's soul using the Human Path.
  • Tragic Dream: Right before falling in battle to Naruto and Sasuke, Obito gets bombarded with a vision of what his life would have been like if he had not turned to darkness. The vision included him moving on from Rin's death, joining his comrades in battle, and eventually becoming Hokage.
  • Tragic Villain: Obito's fall took him through a huge deal of trauma that combined with his clan's curse as well as manipulation by Madara, and no support network, caused him to become a deranged and insane terrorist who loathes the world. In his disillusioned new worldview, all he cares about is a world where the people he loved are alive and his former ideals of heroism are the norm.
    • This is shown while his soul was being ripped to pieces by the Ten Tails, which was represented by his ©ein team photo being torn apart and being reconstructed when he regained his sanity. Even after all he has done and said, his friend, his crush and and his sensei are still his reason to exist.
    • His mental battle with Naruto twists the knife even more where Obito has a vision of what his life would have been like if he didn't let his obsession consume his soul.
    • His final talk with Madara plunges the knife all the way through, when Obito realizes he never had a chance: Madara took everything from him. He was orchestrating his downfall all along, and prepared for every possible outcome in order to make sure Obito went along with his Moon Eye Plan.
  • Tranquil Fury: Has a not-so-subtle grudge towards Kakashi and isn't afraid to make it publicly known, but still manages to keep a lid on his bottled hate towards Kakashi because his act of murder was forced through circumstance, particularly Rin deciding to die by the hands of the man she loved for the sake of her village. His ire comes from the fact Kakashi insists on stirring his former ideals on him while he himself rejects them.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Obito was an orphan from childhood, despised in his own clan, and only Rin acknowledged him and his dream of becoming a Hokage. On one of the missions he sees her get kidnapped, has half his body crushed under rubble as he and Kakashi save her, and recovering with Madara's help, is given a Breaking Speech from the very same person about how the world sucks, and it will only cause him pain, offering Obito a chance to create a new dream world at the expense of the current one. Obito promptly refuses, goes through months of painful rehabilitation, and eventually learns that Rin was kidnapped again, and goes on a desperate attempt to save her, arriving just in time to see her get stabbed by Kakashi, ending up a textbook example of Type B, believing Madara to be right and his solution to be the only way to save the world. Almost two decades later, after Obito returns to his old self and performs a Heel–Face Turn, he learns that Madara orchestrated Rin's death so as to manipulate Obito into joining him, since he knew that Obito was a kind person.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening:
    • Seeing Taiseki slash out Kakashi's eye causes Obito to awaken a two tomoe Sharingan.
    • When Obito witnessed Rin's death he went straight from having a two tomoe Sharingan to awakening his Mangekyo.
  • Troll:
    • Obito seems to enjoy toying with people's emotions to break them down. Later we find out this probably stems from deep-seated insecurity of his own convictions, and that he probably does this to reassure himself of them.
    • Played straight during his tenure as Tobi where pretty much his every interaction with anyone is filled with trolling and attempts to make them angry. He continues to enjoy provoking others as "Madara" as he knows that there is nothing they can do about it given that he is effectively invincible.
  • Tsundere: As Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution revealed, he was very Tsundere to Kushina (who returned the favor, often putting him down while he was secretly her favorite out of Minato's students). Which makes what happens after even more heartbreaking.
  • Two-Faced: The incident in Kannabi Bridge left the right side of his face severely scarred, while the left side is untouched. The cave-in pressed down on his face hard enough to make the skin stretch to the point of tearing, which resulted in spiral-like stretch marks where the skin scarred.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: Is mentioned by his successor and her bodyguard to not have been a benevolent ruler. But yet again it is stated that the Fourth Mizukage was always a tyrant but he later began to act strangely; how much of the negativity of his legacy has to do with Obito was never made crystal clear.
  • The Unchosen One: Unlike Madara, who besides being of the most powerful ninja in the world is the Reincarnation of one of the sons of the Sage of Six Paths and was effectively a demigod amongst mortals plus being chosen explicitly by Black Zetsu to be the next Ten-Tails' Jinchuuriki and unwitting vessel to Kaguya, Obito is "just" an Uchiha of no notable birthright. And yet, not only did he snatch the title of the Ten-Tails' second Jinchuuriki right out from underneath Madara's nose, he overpowered the Ten-Tails' will on his own and implicitly avoided being turned into Kaguya's vessel by doing so, being the Wild Card no one thought would achieve such power.
  • The Unfettered: He will not back down from obtaining his goals, the world be damned. Murdering his entire family, his mentor, attacking his village, his closest friend and plunging the entire world in a war with them against an army of white Zetsus and Edo Tensei Zombies means nothing. It is revealed that he plans to use Infinite Tsukuyomi with the power of the Ten-Tails to rewrite reality so that these events will not mean anything. He still keeps going even when the Ten Tails is ripped from him.
  • Unreliable Expositor: He delivers a lot of exposition, and quite a bit of it is suspect.
  • Unrequited Love Lasts Forever: A very dark example. His love for Rin has never died and when she died at Kakashi's hands, he decided to dedicate his entire life to getting back at the world that took her from him.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Did he ever. The Uchiha Clan curse hit him hard.
    • Obito was unique among the Uchiha in that he loved everyone, and felt sympathy for those who did not, from the very bottom of his heart. Madara soon fixed all that and turned that kindness and empathy into a deep hatred. Only a small part of his subconscious still refuses to succumb to the Uchiha curse.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Obito was never the most skilled ninja but what he did to make up for it was to use higher scaled powers and his Super-Strength when empowered by the Sharingan. As a child when he went berserk and brutally massacred the Hidden Mist Ninjas it truly shows his lack of control with his unyielding power as he uses brute force and extremely powerful ninjutsu, this is stated why Madara picked Obito because of his power. Later on as his persona of Tobi he becomes Weak, but Skilled and is more technical with his jutsus but still retains all of his strength in the Fourth Great Ninja Warrior. As the Ten Tails Jinchuriki he takes this even further and prefers raw power rather than technique, at least until he takes full control over the Ten Tails.
  • Unstoppable Rage: He utterly flips out after he sees Rin being killed by the Hidden Mist Troops and proceeds to tear through them in response. After he is spent grieving slightly, afterwards angrily turning around to the survivors and butchering them.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Obito doesn't find out until near the end of his life that Rin's death was all Madara's plot to corrupt him to darkness. Even when he seemingly has full autonomy in moving the plan forward and abandons intent to resurrect Madara, he doesn't realize Black Zetsu is arranging the pieces to ensure Madara's return with Obito's sacrifice as inevitable toward that purpose.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: Zig Zagged. This is his genuine goal, but Naruto considered it egoistical to impose his views of peace on the world, while Tobi was defending his vision as the right thing for humanity. With the reveal, it's pointed out he is doing things in self service while also considering it a benefit for humanity as a whole.
  • Villain Has a Point: At a time when Obito and Madara took control of the Ten Tails, Obito calls Madara out for not starting the Moon's Eye Plan right away because he's having fun watching the Ten-Tails rampage and flat out calling him an Psychopathic Manchild. Madara denies it, calling out Obito on his impatience instead, but if you remember the behavior of Madara during the battle with the five Kage when he could easily wipe out them, but just ends up playing with them until his enjoyment is ruined, after which he proceeds to Curb-Stomp Battle them off-panel and crash Obito's party, not to mention his prehistory when he threw a tantrum after eavesdropping on Hashirama and Tobirama Senju, in their own home, and hearing Tobirama express his opinion that the title of Hokage should be voted on by the Village Elders and Clan Heads instead of just being handed to Madara because Hashirama wants him to have it, at this moment you can understand that Obito is not so wrong.
  • Villainous BSoD: When Naruto corners him in his own mind and confronts him with all his inner conflicts, Obito begins to hallucinate his past self on Naruto along with disturbing visions of his present self turning into his former comrades. This lets Naruto grab his hand and free the Tailed Beasts from him.
  • Villainous Valour: Obito regains control of his body and mind from a potential world-destroying Eldritch Abomination through The Powerof Love. If his status as Big Bad wasn't so cemented through all the horrible things he's done, this could be mistaken for the hero's climax.
  • Villain Respect: He actually praised intellect Shikamaru, even calling him a Worthy Opponent during their brief meeting.
    • Gives this to Konan as well, being impressed by her preparations to combat him and admitting that, were it not for Izanagi, he absolutely would've been killed by her.
  • Villains Never Lie: Played straight most of the time.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: To both Sasuke and Naruto.
    • With Sasuke, Obito began monitoring him after their first meeting, and after Itachi's death, he gave him medical treatment after he was badly wounded, then revealed something that pushed him deeper into the Curse of Hatred, and later even remarking that the loss of five Akatsuki members was worth it to gain Sasuke's loyalty. Although Obito stated a number of times that he saw Sasuke as nothing more than a disposable pawn, he nevertheless kept an eye on him, intervening whenever Sasuke was at risk and always happy with signs of his ever-improving Sharingan and his growing isolation from all other. It's implied from his own obsession with Naruto that he saw Sasuke as more than a pawn, but a proxy for him to validate his current course of action. If Naruto represented Obito's former Will of Fire, Sasuke represented Obito's Curse of Hatred. By successfully grooming Sasuke to eventually triumph over Naruto's Will of Fire, Obito would be able to push through with his Evil Plan without regrets.
    • With Naruto, he began to show some interest in him after he defeated Kakuzu, even giving a warning to Pain that catching Naruto will not be so easy. But he obviously began to show it after the defeat of Pain when he openly decided to meet Naruto in order to learn how he managed to persuade Nagato to betray him, but he eventually decided to just use him as another hurdle for Sasuke. However, during the Fourth Shinobi World War in battle with Naruto, he began to remind Obito of his younger self, because of which he became fixated on Naruto, wishing to destroy all his hopes and to demonstrate the naivety of his beliefs so that he would come around to Obito's point of view.
  • Villain Teleportation: Not that he makes very good use of it, but he can teleport if he wishes.
  • Visionary Villain: He has a clear goal and plan to achieve the utopia which he envisions.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He had a very deep voice when he was 14. Although the anime seems to imply that he was simply imitating Madara's voice, as when Madara is revived he gets Tobi's previous voice actor and Obito gets his original "goofy" one (albeit using a much more serious voice). So this would indicate that the deep voice was just part of his Dead Person Impersonation of Madara.
  • The War to End All Wars: He started a new "world war" with the goal of trapping the remaining Tailed Beasts and creating a dream world in which all dead loved ones would be brought back to life.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: From becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchuuriki to his death, he loses all clothing except his pants.
  • Walking Spoiler: You think you know everything about him? Keep reading the manga...
  • Warrior Therapist: He, as the Evil Counterpart to Naruto, is an evil version of this trope. He loves giving Breaking Lectures to his opponents to break down them during battle.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Played with; while his space-time abilities make him one of the most powerful tactical fighters of the series, he only ever used two large scale ninjutsu whereas the rest of Akatsuki relied on several highly destructive techniques. It's because of this that Itachi said that "Madara" was a shadow of his former self; at the time, Itachi was under the impression that Tobi was the real Madara Uchiha, who tied with the First Hokage, the second "God of Shinobi", in strength. It should be noted that his ability to control several tailed beasts with his eyes makes up for his lack of personal firepower. And this is not even getting into when he became Jinchuuriki of the Ten-Tails...
  • Weaponized Teleportation: His Kamui lets him teleport people and objects inside of a pocket dimension, and he can fire them out again.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Madara rebuilt Obito by replacing the crushed half of his body with Hashirama's cells.
  • We Can Rule Together: After killing Neji and giving Naruto a Breaking Lecture about his naivety and inability to protect everyone, he asks Naruto what he even has left in this reality and invites him to stop prolonging his suffering and to join him. Naruto hesitates, but Hinata snaps him out of it.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Though the creation of the ideal world for himself is part of his motivation, he still really wants to bring peace to the world and thinks that his plan is the only way it can happen.
  • What Measure Is a Mook?: Obito asks this question of Madara, who is proceeding to take both his Rinnegan and Yin-Kurama from Black Zetsu, effectively discarding the poor dying Uchiha like a used handkerchief. Madara confirms this. Obito proceeds to inform Madara he's not fit to lead or control anyone in the dream-world. For a true leader will allow others to step on his corpse, but he'll never step on his comrade's corpses. Which is true: Obito, even as Tobi and Madara, always respected his fallen comrades and only disposed of traitors, manipulations or not.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In childhood he calls out Kakashi for neglecting his teammates. This leads to Kakashi returning later to help him save Rin.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: After becoming the Ten-Tails's Jinchuuriki.
  • White Sheep: All in all, in childhood, he was one of the most decent, caring, and noble members of the named Uchiha revealed in the series (at least up until The Reveal), especially when you find out the truth about the massacre.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Was this as a kid, and this trait is ultimately what caused him to become the Big Bad. After very nearly dying and then witnessing one of his best friends, who had promised to protect the woman he loved, kill said woman, he began wanting an entire world where it didn't happen so he could escape reality.
  • Willfully Weak: While acting as Deidara's Sidekick. Despite being stronger than his supposed boss, he pretended to be much weaker, to the point of allowing Deidara to physically abuse him.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Like Naruto he never knew his parents, was an outcast in his own clan and hid behind the act of a happy-go-lucky idiot to escape his loneliness and pain as a child. However, once he was crippled and mutilated in a cave-in and later witnessed the girl he loved and who acted kindly to him being killed in a twisted war plot at the hand of his best friend who promised to protect her at any cost, he went completely insane, discarding the world as a fake that he had to replace with the Moon Eye Plan. Combined with all the things he has endured after that, he ties with Nagato for biggest Cosmic Plaything in this story.
  • Worf Had the Flu: In the battle against Kakashi in the Kamui dimension, Obito is handily and relatively quickly defeated. However, he had quite a few disadvantages. Obito was exhausted from controlling the six Jinchuurikis and their tailed beasts, as well as his previous fights against Naruto, Bee, Kakashi and Guy; while Kakashi's energy had been rejuvenated three-times over by Kurama's chakra. Additionally, he needed someone to remove the seal in his heart so the whole battle was a ploy to get Kakashi to stab him in the heart.
  • World's Strongest Man:
    • Even before becoming a jinchuuriki Obito was extremely powerful. His Mangekyo Sharingan comes with the Kamui ability which allows him to teleport himself and other things into a pocket dimension and from there anywhere in the world. He can use this for up to 5 minutes to allow himself to phase through all kinds of attacks and matter. His chakra levels are vast, due in large part to the Hashirama cells coursing through his body, and he uses this to his advantage to bust out very taxing techniques one after another. He can use Wood Style in very violent and explosive ways that we don't even see from Hashirama or Yamato. Even though he has Healing Factor, his raw durability is insane as he can recover quickly from losing an arm or leg or go on without a heart for an indeterminate amount of time. Altogether, this makes Obito Uchiha one of the most dangerous combatants in the series. The only characters who have some way to beat him are Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage, and Kakashi Hatake, who can counter his Kamui.
    • He manages to become the strongest Shinobi on the planet since the Sage of Six Paths by becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki. All of the former Hokage, including Hashirama himself acknowledged that Obito has become stronger than any of them. Even Madara Uchiha became cautious of him, admitting that Obito's new power could throw a wrench in his plans. The only reason he lost to Naruto and Sasuke was due to his internal conflict, if it weren’t for that he would have been unstoppable. He is soon surpassed by Madara when he became the Ten-Tails' jinchuuriki, due to having the Eight Tails and half of the Nine Tails' chakra in his possession instead of fragments, and that is without taking into account Kaguya Ootsusuki who is even stronger than Madara was.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Hit? He killed Konan with a pipe from behind, and that's not even getting into the details of the flashback when he killed Hiruzen's wife and then attempted to have the Nine-Tails kill Kushina, a mother weakened by pregnancy and maintaining the seal by mauling her to death. Thankfully, Minato showed up just in time.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • Hurt? He'd kill one, as seen when threatening to cut baby Naruto with a kunai; which is soon upped by attempting to blow him sky high with explosive tags!
    • This continued into his Shadow Dictator reign of Kiri, where he made children kill each other to graduate.
  • Xanatos Gambit: He makes one in the non-canon movie Road to Ninja. He sends Naruto and Sakura to an alternate universe and forces Naruto to fight a battle with Menma and unleash the Nine-Tails in order to weaken his seal. If Menma wins he will get the Nine-Tails but if he loses, he will take over Menma's body and try to get the Nine-Tails on his own. But if he nevertheless loses, he will destroy the illusion since it's all going towards his main goal: this is a field test to see how the Moon's Eye Plan will work at a basic level.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: While at first sight it would look like he planned everything that has happened in the series, he is in fact very accomplished in cutting his losses and creating new plans out of his ass as the situation demands. Hell, around 5% of the things happening during Fourth Shinobi World War were in his initial plans and he was still at the top of his game. The biggest thorn in his side was when Kabuto brought the real Madara Uchiha onto the battlefield, forcing Obito to improvise without his Dead Person Impersonation while the Shinobi Alliance and Madara were bearing down on him, and he still managed to become the Ten Tails Jinchuuriki right under everyone's noses. The only time his plan becomes unsalvageable (at least until Madara hijacked it for himself) is when Naruto finally defeats him directly.
  • Yandere: For Rin, to the point where he is willing to remake reality to be with her.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: He's rescued from certain death by Madara, but the cave that they are in has the exits blocked off (intentionally) with a giant boulder, so Obito literally can't leave. Eventually something happens that causes Obito to completely lose any desire to return, however.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
    • Tobi will do it without a second thought if he deems it absolutely necessary or if he is betrayed. He does this with Akatsuki mainly because they simply keep dying left and right, except for Konan who he killed coldly in revenge, Itachi who was a terminally ill Double Agent and Madara who he barely tolerates. He suffers from this from Madara, but averted it by becoming the Jinchuuriki of the Ten Tails.
    • Following his defeat at the hands of the entire alliance, Madara simply pulls this on him again by having Black Zetsu ambush him and take control of his weakened body. However, rather than dying, Black Zetsu's possession keeps Obito alive after the use of Rinne Tensei brings Madara back and Obito is henceforth used as a mere combat puppet.
  • Younger Than He Looks: When he was 14 he stood about as tall as Minato.
  • You Remind Me of X: Naruto reminds him of his younger self, however this is a case of I Hate Past Me since he despises his former personality and presumes Naruto will end up like him in the end.
Obito: Naruto...you resemble me a lot. Yeah...you're still younger than me, that's it. But eventually...

Kakashi and Obito

Formerly friends, Kakashi Hatake (one of the main protagonists) and Obito Uchiha (one of the main antagonists) are now deadly enemies. However, they still clearly care about each other, and Obito, while pulling a Breaking Speech on Kakashi, tries to converts him to his Well-intentioned Extremist worldview.

How well does it match the trope?
