The main character, The Hero of Naruto, In case you couldn't tell; and the father of Boruto and Himawari Uzumaki in Boruto. He starts off as the stock Shonen anime Hero out to prove his worth to the villagers who've frequently viewed him as an outsider by becoming the Hokagenote  of Konoha. When he was just an infant, the Fourth Hokage sealed the evil Nine-Tailed Fox demon inside his body. He goes from being viewed as nothing but the demon itself to a full-fledged ninja once he saves his sensei Iruka from the evil Mizuki. He gradually matures from his Idiot Hero demeanor over the course of the series, and by the time Shippuden rolls in, he's older and wiser, not to mention stronger than ever.

Over the course of the series, Jiraiya's teachings and his interaction with Nagato/Pain influences Naruto into noting the futility of revenge and how hatred can ultimately destroy everything a person holds dear, thus driving Naruto's need to save Sasuke from himself even more. Another result of saving Konoha from Pain's attack finally turned the villager's hatred into admiration and respect at long last. Naruto also does the impossible and finally befriends the tailed beast sealed within himself, as well as the other tailed beasts, undergoing a massive power-up. Along with Sasuke and aid from the spirit of the Sage of the Six Paths, Naruto finally succeeds in redeeming Obito, stopping Madara and putting an end to Kaguya's ambitions. He then performs another miracle and finally redeems Sasuke by the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Two years after the War, Naruto's mission to stop the moon from falling awakens his inner love for fellow teammate Hinata. He and Hinata get married not too long afterward and have a son and a daughter together, Boruto and Himawari Uzumaki.

Naruto later achieves his dream of becoming Hokage by becoming the Seventh after Kakashi steps down. The Sequel Series, Boruto and its original film version explore his life as Hokage and the relationship between him and his son, Boruto.

His hobbies are pulling pranks and watering plants.

    #-B
  • #1 Dime: The red scarf that Hinata made for him becomes this in The Last. By the time he receives it, he values it so much that he tells Hinata that, even in its ruined state, he will cherish it forever.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: His second chakra from the fox. It can only be unlocked when you use up all of your regular chakra, so that makes it this.
  • Above the Influence: A non-sexual type of manner, but when considering the way Sakura was practically offering herself when delivering her infamous fake love confession, yet he rejects her outright because he knows she's lying and calls her out on it, it's clear that it was a case of this.
  • The Ace: A pretty standard example of the hero growing into one by the end of his series. By the time the Fourth Shinobi World War starts up, he is the only living person capable of fighting the undead, constantly regenerating, and nigh-unbeatable Madara Uchiha on equal terms. Not only that, a number of people have claimed him to have surpassed the Fourth Hokage several times over and Tobirama directly compares Naruto to Hashirama upon witnessing his mastery of Sage Mode, and later admits that Naruto may eventually become a greater Hokage than his brother was. After obtaining Six Paths Sage Mode, Kakashi states he surpassed all Hokage and he later is vital in resealing Kaguya Otsutsuki.
  • Action Dad: By the time he becomes Hokage, he's a father to two kids.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job:
    • His chakra color, and therefore the color of his Rasengan as well, was changed from yellow in the manga to blue in the anime. It's yellow in his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, and in The Last his Rasenshuriken is yellow.
    • In the colored addition of the manga, his sage markings are colored red but in the anime, they're orange.
  • Adaptational Badass: A mild case. Part 1 filler and movies have him go up against Jonin-level threats frequently. Something he wasn't quite able to do as much until Part 2, where he and the rest of the Konoha 11 took a level in badass.
  • Against the Grain: Naruto is never one to let the Shinobi World's rules, standards, and expectations dictate his actions, especially when it comes to doing what he truly feels is right.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Begging the Raikage not to kill Sasuke, which earned him a rough lecture. Later called back by Raikage upon seeing that Hashirama pulled the exact same stunt.
  • All-Loving Hero: Naruto was this trope to the point where it makes you wonder why he had such an abnormally hard time making friends prior to the start of the series. Hinata, Shikamaru, Kakashi, Temari, Neji, and Gaara all note that he has the power to influence people. It's worth noting that Naruto tends to get off to a bad start with most of the people he befriends, and they're often completely dismissive of him for reasons typically unrelated to him having the fox inside him. Unlike many of the other examples, he's not always civil in response, but his determination and honesty cause many of these people to see him, and often themselves, in a new light.
Kakashi: "Naruto has a mysterious power. Everyone who meets him becomes his friend, no matter how little contact they have beforehand."
    • In fact, to him, each new friend means a new member of his family, something he takes very seriously since he pretty much grew up without a real one, and why he always goes to great lengths to protect them, including Sasuke.
    • Deconstructed to some extent a few chapters after his fight with Pain. Naruto's strong desire to end the cycle of hatred has a rough start because it causes him to try and help those who have done things that others would look at as "irredeemable". For example, he begs the Raikage to forgive Sasuke for attempting to kidnap Killer Bee, the Raikage obviously found this hard to do because of how personal it was.
    • Reconstruction after he learns the truth behind the Uchiha Massacre and now understands how he can help Sasuke.
    • Taken Up to Eleven when defeating Obito, who was arguably his most personal enemy and the reason for a lot of the tragedy in Naruto's life. As Naruto is trying to convince Obito to give up his ways, as he already knows that Obito himself doesn't truly believe in the cause he is fighting for, Obito instead insists that he doesn't regret his actions. Naruto, in turn, actually rejects Obito's Redemption Rejection, makes him realize his true feelings, and grabs his hand to lead him to their side in order to guide him towards redemption.
    • This trait of Naruto turns against him by Hinata and their son Boruto. For Hinata, she knows he loves everyone the same, but she wants to be something more special to him. Cue her painfully ironic Oblivious to Love reactions prior to his first Love Confession in The Last, thinking he is just being kind to her like he is towards everyone else. As for their son, Boruto, Naruto sees everyone in Konoha as his family, so Boruto feels neglected by him.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: A huge theme in Part I and his Backstory is that many of his fellow villagers viewed Naruto as an outsider due to his status as the Jinchuriki of the 9-Tailed Fox, with Iruka as the noteworthy exception. It gradually fades away through the course of the story, because he proves everyone wrong.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Naruto eventually possesses the powers of all nine Tailed Beasts.
  • Almighty Janitor: Out of the Konoha 11 and Sai, Naruto is the only one who was still a Genin. A Genin that is a literal One-Man Army, whose personal favorite technique is the logical conclusion of tossing a million razors into a whirlwind and sealing it into one big Happy Fun Ball, and can pull multiple several-story-tall weapon-using toads from another realm, but still a Genin. According to Kishimoto and Episode 48 of the Boruto anime, he never promoted from Genin until he became Hokage. More than likely he just stopped caring about ranks after a while. Which makes sense when you think about it — it's not like his ranking limited what missions he could go on, his reputation having reached a point where rank is outright meaningless in comparison.
  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: Whenever he unleashes four or more tails of the Nine-Tails' chakra. He completely forgets what happened during those rampages.
  • Always Someone Better: Frequently flip-flops with Sasuke on who's on the receiving end of this. He later becomes this to his son. Boruto is a Child Prodigy, but all of his accomplishments are overlooked because of his relation to Naruto, ending up making Boruto into a massive "Well Done, Son" Guy.
  • Amazon Chaser:
    • Zigzagged with Sakura. While Naruto is shown on multiple occasions to be terrified of Sakura, especially when she displays increasing levels of Super-Strength, he is also at many points shown to admire her for how strong she's become. Doesn't last as Naruto later let's go of his feelings for Sakura.
    • Played Straight with Hinata. In Chapter 80, Naruto admits he "never knew Hinata was this incredible" when he finds out she adopted his nindō and he sees how she refuses to give up during her "fight" against Neji. In Chapter 559, Naruto reassures Hinata that she's strong when she doubts herself and sports a proud smile when he recalls how she defended him from Pain. In Chapter 629, Naruto sports another proud smile when he sees that Hinata's leading his defense. In The Last, Naruto comments on Hinata's strength twice—first is when he's confused over Sakura's request to have him walk Hinata home, because he thinks no one in the village would dare mess with Hinata because she's "really strong"; second is in The Stinger, where he playfully warns Boruto and Himawari during their snowball fight that their mother is "super strong" when she gets serious.
  • And I Must Scream:
    • In Boruto, he gets sealed by Jigen in a Pocket Dimension, with only Kurama as company and its chakra to keep him alive.
    • It happens again later on, only that this time it's Kawaki the culprit, and he seals Naruto and Hinata in a dimension where time doesn't flow, so they can't even scream.
  • Angry Cheek Puff: He would occasionally sulk while puffing his cheeks in his younger years to show how much of a brat he was. He stopped doing it after the Time Skip in Shippuden as a sign he got Older and Wiser.
  • Angst Coma:
    • Downplayed in Chapter 476. When he starts to fear that Sasuke has no chance of being saved and will be killed, Naruto goes into a panic attack and passes out, but it only lasted a couple of hours and ended without any mental journey.
    • Played Straight in The Last. After Hinata "rejects" Naruto and leaves with Toneri, Naruto passes out for three days. According to Sai, Naruto spent those three days repeatedly mumbling Hinata's name, along with "other embarrassing things", while he was sleeping/comatose.
  • Animal Battle Aura: His Tailed Beast chakra cloak takes on the shape of a nine-tailed fox. During his final battle with Sasuke he combines with two Tailed Beast Mode shadow clones to create a six-armed, three-faced version with a strong resemblance to Asura's battle avatar.
  • Animal Eyes: Naruto's eyes become red with slitted pupils like a fox's whenever he taps the Nine-Tailed Fox's power, and become yellow with rectangular pupils like a toad's when he enters Sage Mode in Shippuden. When he later learns how to use both at the same time, the two pupil shapes overlap.
  • Animal Motifs:
    • Foxes due to being Kurama's host. Additionally, the whisker marks on his cheeks and his habit of keeping his eyes closed at times (like when he's confused or embarrassed) give him a fox-like appearance.
    • Toads due to his affiliation with the ones of Mount Myoboku. Also, he has a money pouch that's designed to look like a frog which he calls "Gama-chan" ("Little Froggy").
  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his right arm to Sasuke in the series' Final Battle, while costing Sasuke his left arm during the same. A year later, Tsunade uses Hashirama's cells to give Naruto a replacement arm.
  • Artificial Limbs: Naruto sports an artificial right hand, having lost it during his final duel with Sasuke. Like Obito, his hand is made of cloned cells from the First Hokage. The new hand functions exactly as a biological hand and Naruto can detach and reattach it any time. He also uses an artificial hand with a built-in Ninja Tool developed by the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team in an attempt to mimic Momoshiki's abilities.
  • Appeal to Popularity: Believes that if people have different opinions only the most commonly held opinion should be considered.
Naruto: "When people have different opinions, you should apply the majority vote."
  • Ascended Fanboy: Of all the Hokages, Naruto greatly respected and revered the Fourth Hokage — who he would later discover was his birth father. Even after venting to his father for sealing Kurama inside him, Naruto still holds the highest respect for him. And like his father, Naruto becomes the Seventh Hokage as an adult.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: In recognition of his feats and achievements in the Fourth Great Shinobi War, as well as his fame as the Hero of the Ninja World, Naruto is made the Hokage of Konoha by Kakashi and the other Jounin.
  • Attention Whore: Justified. Naruto had this trait in the very early days of the manga, and most definitely in the academy. This was a result of the extreme social isolation he suffered from being the Kyūbi Jinchūriki. People would actively try to ignore and avoid him, but by acting out and pulling pranks he could bring some attention his way, even if it was negative. He gets over this once he makes real friends.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Weaponised with the Sexy and Harem Justu, which transforms him into a busty, naked female version of himself.
  • Author Avatar: Naruto's wardrobe was based on the clothes Kishimoto wore as a child.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: In the New Era, Naruto is the Hokage and the strongest shinobi in the world.
  • Awesome, but Impractical:
    • Using a lot of Kurama's power, which causes him to enter the Version 2 chakra cloak. It grants him immense power to the extent that he can go one on one with Orochimaru, one of the Sannin, with four tails, and Pain, the nominal leader of the Akatsuki, with six. However, continued use of this form threatens to reduce his lifespan (thanks to the strain of having to continually heal from the damage it does to him), and it turns him into a mindless killing machine who can't tell friend from foe. After befriending Kurama and learning how to control his chakra this is no longer an issue.
    • His Rasenshuriken move, at first. The technique takes a lot of chakra to use even for Naruto, and causes cellular damage to the arm he's using when it goes off, which isn't easily healed and could have crippled him, however, the move's quite literally capable of Overkill (just ask Kakuzu). Once Naruto masters Sage Mode, this trope is Downplayed somewhat, as he uses natural energy both to power the jutsu and to throw it, alleviating both issues at the same time (though he can only use two before he depletes his store of natural energy. Kurama Chakra Mode eliminates the chakra issue entirely.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Post-Time Skip. Naruto develops his own form of battle analysis, using his shadow clones in trial-and-error fighting until he forms a winning strategy.
  • Ax-Crazy: Prior to learning how to control the 9 tails' power (and eventually becoming friends with Kurama), Naruto would become increasingly violent whenever Kurama's chakra took him over, attacking anyone in his sight.
  • Babies Ever After: He and Hinata have a son named Boruto and a daughter named Himawari.
  • Badass Adorable: Naruto is a likable, friendly guy whose antics amuse everyone.
  • Badass Arm-Fold: Naruto has a habit of doing this when he's feeling particularly confident, or after having accomplished a Big Damn Heroes moment. One example is when saving Sasuke and Sakura from Orochimaru.
  • Badass Boast: He always boasts before he engages in fight. It inevitably became this.
  • Badass Cape: After becoming the Seventh Hokage, Naruto wears a white cape decorated with red flame-like motifs on the edges, with the kanji for "Seventh Hokage" (七代目火影, Nanadaime Hokage) written vertically down the back, and held together by a red rope, similar to the one worn by his father.
  • Badass Family: Naruto's family contains plenty of badasses, his father is the Fourth Hokage, and his mother was the former host of Kurama. They even fought alongside their son at at different points of the series, Kushina helped him subdue Kurama during his training, while the resurrected Minato fought with Naruto during the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc. Two years later, Naruto forms a Battle Couple with Hinata, the two save the world, and later marry, starting a family. Their son Boruto is shaping up to be a formidable ninja in his own right, and their daughter Himawari is one you shouldn't mess with.
  • Badass Long Coat: When Naruto returned from learning Sage Mode to fight Pain, he was sporting one of these, but quickly lost it. He regains one with an elaborate, seal-decorated coat of chakra when, together with Kurama, they finally pulled off their Tailed Beast Mode.
  • Battle Aura: Naruto gets three over the course of the series:
    • The Tailed Beast cloak, which has several states: Version 1, a bubbling red aura in the vague shape of a multi-tailed fox; Version 2, a red-and-black aura with Glowing Eyes of Doom and a Jagged Mouth, symbolizing his loss of control to Kurama; and Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, a fiery yellow aura with black markings, which is upgraded upon him becoming BFFs with Kurama and again upon getting both halves of Kurama sealed into him following the War.
    • Sage Mode, which creates an aura of natural energy that strikes people even if his physical attack misses. He eventually learns to combine them into Tailed Beast Sage Mode.
    • After receiving Six Paths Yang Chakra from Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki's ghost, he combines it with natural energy and the chakra of all nine Tailed Beasts to create Six Paths Sage Mode, which lets him use Truth-Seeking Balls and fight on par with the likes of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. The reason he doesn't use it against Toneri may be because he was temporarily drained of it when he kidnapped Hinata, or more likely because they were destroyed in his battle with Sasuke and databook material states that the orbs cannot be remade once they are destroyed (Kaguya being able to make new ones being the one exception).
  • Battle Couple: With Hinata in The Last. They properly confess their love for one another while fighting Toneri. Even before he realizes his love for her. He fiercely defends her every single time Toneri is around, and at the end of their Cock Fight, he gives a powerful punch to Toneri's face to save her.
  • Beam Spam: During his fight with Pain in the anime, Version 2 Naruto fires off Tailed Beast Balls like machine-gun bullets, which was later included in the manga and dubbed "Continuous Tailed Beast Balls".
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Downplayed. Naruto's lifelong dream was to become Hokage and he accomplished said dream as an adult. And while he has to deal with the stresses of the role, he's still happy about becoming said role.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: For someone who had no loving family to come home to and being alienated for something that wasn't his fault, anyone that was genuinely nice to him was a big moment in his life.
    • He began to see Iruka as a father figure when the older ninja said that Naruto was a student with potential and not the Nine-Tailed Fox that killed his parents.
    • Out of all his friends, Hinata is the only one who always treats him with respect and kindness, and he wholeheartedly reciprocates, even more so after the Chunin Exams arc. This is partly why they developed a strong friendship that evolved into love.
    • Wonder why ramen is Naruto's Trademark Favorite Food? As Konoha Hiden revealed, Teuchi kindly offered ramen to a young Naruto on a rainy day. And along with Ayame, he is one of the few adults who didn't look at Naruto with scorn in his early childhood.
  • Beneath the Mask: At the beginning of the series, beneath Naruto's mischievous Idiot Hero facade was a lonely, resentful child starved for attention and hovering dangerously close to a Face–Heel Turn. The acknowledgement that he got from Iruka, Team 7, Hinata, and eventually the rest of Konoha helped him get better, but Naruto constantly finds parallels between himself, Gaara, and Sasuke and wonders if he'd have turned out like them if Iruka hadn't stood up for him against Mizuki.
  • Better Than New: After surviving from certain death, and with the power given to him by Hagoromo, Naruto gained access to the Six Paths Sage Mode. He becomes able to enter Sage Mode, thus further enhancing his abilities. He can take his transformation a step further by donning a new chakra cloak similar to that of the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode. While using this power, Naruto becomes immune to the effects of the Truth-Seeking Balls and gains the ability to fly. His physical parameters are heightened to the point where he could pressure Madara as the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki, evade Kaguya's Yomotsu Hirasaka, and outright blitz her while catching her completely off-guard. His durability has also increased, as he took no damage from Sasuke's Chidori.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • The "Betty" (friendly, hardworking ninja who later becomes a messiah-like person) to Sasuke's "Veronica" (arrogant, top-student who later becomes a rogue ninja) for Sakura's "Archie". At the end of the manga, Sakura marries the "Veronica", while Naruto marries the "Betty" (Hinata) in his own Love Triangle.
    • The "Archie" for Hinata's "Betty" and Sakura's "Veronica", and both girls toy with the standard, classic traits for the roles. At the end of the manga, Hinata marries Naruto while Sakura marries Sasuke, the boy she always loved since the beginning.
    • The "Betty" (A Hero to His Hometown, All-Loving Hero, Nice Guy, and childhood friend) to Toneri's "Veronica" (the Big Bad, Smug Super, Yandere, and a mysterious figure) for Hinata's "Archie" in The Last. Hinata has only ever loved Naruto, but she pretends to choose Toneri so that she could save Hanabi. In the end, she and Naruto become a couple and get married, while Toneri is left alone on the moon.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's both lovable and cheerful, possesses a lot of empathy and loves to make friends, but don't try to hurt his friends. He WILL find you.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Naruto's also a goofy dude who adds to some of the comic relief. He also knows a few Jutsu that could kill you and is the Jinchūriki of the Nine-Tailed Fox. In case you don't get it: Don't piss him off.
  • Big Brother Mentor: He's this to Konohamaru, who looks up to him more than anyone.
  • Big Damn Hero: Several times throughout the course of the series.
    • Most of the time played straight, but the most spectacular one—his rescue of Tsunade and the Leaf Village from Pain—is actually a Double Subversion. Pain had already killed multiple significant characters and obliterated the vast majority of the village landscape before Naruto arrives. But he manages to convince him to make a Heel–Face Turn, so Nagato promptly sacrifices his own life to revive everyone he'd killed.
    • Gets another one after befriending Kurama. Just as Tobi's controlled Tailed Beasts are about to blast Kakashi and Gai with their Bijudama he flicks them all the way just by sheer speed.
    • Gets one when Obito becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki. He saves both Sasuke and Minato before they can react from being consumed by the seal.
    • Saves Guy from being immediately killed after he kicks a huge hole in Madara using Night Guy, kicks away Madara's counter-attack contemptuously, and saves Gai from crumbling away to dust.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: He and Hinata kiss in the final scene of The Last; it also doubles as their Official Kiss.
  • Big Eater: He eats a lot, but never seems to gain any weight from his overeating, which is likely justified by the fact he spends most of his life fighting and training.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: Naruto is loud and boastful because he needs someone, anyone, to notice him as a person and not a thing.
  • Big Good: He's become the rallying point for the entire Ninja Alliance by the time of the Ten-Tails' revival. He fits this trope even more so after he becomes the Seventh Hokage.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Hinata. Lee, Sakura, Kiba, and Shino have pointed out that despite having different personalities and fighting styles, Naruto and Hinata are very similar to each other. Both are considered failures by everyone around them; both suffer because of the respective statuses they have carried since birth, and both want to be acknowledged and accepted. They are both really nice, dorky, determined, loyal, and insecure. According to the databooks and Konoha Hiden, both like to eat red bean soup and preserve their plants. Their respective signature colors, orange and purple, share the common color "Red String of Fate" on the color wheel. Finally, both Naruto and Hinata are incredibly empathetic despite living in a world where that trait is easily looked down upon. This is one of the reasons why they develop a strong friendship that grows into love. Sakura and Tsunade's conversation in Sakura Hiden reveals that Naruto and Hinata's adaptable dynamic with one another is what makes their relationship work.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Dark!Naruto, who's a manifestation of the darkness in Naruto's heart, complete with a constant Slasher Smile and eyes that are completely black. The anime adds Red Eyes, Take Warning to give him Black Eyes of Crazy.
  • Blank White Eyes: Played for Drama whenever he uses his the Version 2 chakra cloak before befriending the Nine-Tails.
  • Blessed with Suck: Played straight at first but ultimately subverted in regards to being Kurama's host. At the start of the series, while being a Jinchuriki gave Naruto a massive heads up compared to his peers and even has traits that would be the envy of any other ninja, the risks of being one outweighs any benefits as Kurama hates humans and would do his best to take control of Naruto's body. However, the subversion comes in during the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc, as thanks to the guidance of Kushina's spirit and Killer B, Naruto not only gains better control of the Tailed Beast chakra, but also Kurama's respect and friendship.
  • Blood Knight: Surprisingly, Naruto was a mild one before becoming the next messiah, as he was elated to hear Zabuza was alive and he considered him a strong enemy. In general, when he was younger he wanted to fight strong opponents (e.g. Sasuke, Lee, and Gaara) to prove his strength. Even post-Time Skip and into adulthood, Naruto still has shades of this, as he still takes some joy out of fighting opponents.
  • Blow You Away: The main nature of his chakra is "Wind", and he puts it to good use with Futon (Wind Style): Rasenshuriken, which basically creates a crapload of tiny little blades that cut every cell in your body. After gaining all nine Tailed Beasts inside him, he can use both Kurama's and Shukaku's wind techniques.
  • Bodyguard Crush:
    • Inverted - if he has to protect a girl in a Filler arc or movie, said girl has a good chance of developing feelings for him whether he catches on or not.
    • Played Straight in The Last - as the strongest member of the Hanabi Rescue Squad, he's assigned to protect Hinata, in case Toneri tries to kidnap her again. As they spend more time together, Naruto realizes he has more personal reasons to keep Hinata safe.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He was this as a child and at the very beginning of the series, boasting that he would become Hokage while failing to perform the most basic techniques. Right before the Chunin Exam finals, Naruto privately admits to Hinata that he worries that he's a kid chasing a dream. But after the Time Skip he becomes this along with full confidence.
  • Book Dumb: He comes up with winning strategies for his squad, yet placed dead last in the exams. He is often ignorant of basic stuff he was supposed to have learned in the Academy, like change in chakra form/nature. This continues well into the series. During the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc he came up a plan to save the entire army from being nuked using shadow clones, but he had to be told how it worked after the fact. To put it simply: he knew it would work but did not know how so.
  • Boring, but Practical: Naruto's signature move, the shadow clone jutsu, allows him to create multiple physical copies of himself. On paper, it sounds considerably less flashy than a majority of the other jutsu in the series. That said, it's actually proven to be a Swiss-Army Superpower.
  • Born Lucky: Naruto is really lucky when it comes to gambling. Lucky enough to win enough money to overflow his previously empty purse with nothing but a coin he found on the ground. It doesn't even need to be him gambling, Jiraiya was about to lose a dice roll when a gust of wind Naruto kicked up from practicing the Rasengan jostled the dice into a winning configuration.
  • Born Winner: Ultimately Played With. A big theme in Part I was how, despite starting from nothing, he was determined to choose his own destiny, make friends, and strive for success beating all odds where one slip up could've made him Ax-Crazy like Gaara, antisocial and revenge-driven like Sasuke, or like any of his other Shadow Archetype villains. However, come Part II, he's revealed to be heir to no less than four super-powerful legacies (Son of the 4th Hokage, descendant of the physically powerful Uzumaki Clan via his mother, godson to one of the Legendary Sannin, and Transmigrant of the youngest son of the Rikkudo Sennin) and the subject of two prophecies from the Great Toad Sage and Rikkudo Sennin respectively, in addition to having the compassion to befriend a creature composed of pure malevolence that was sealed inside of him. He becomes personally trained by some of the strongest ninjas alive, and the wisest Toad Sage. In the end, the overall theme seems to be that, although Naruto always had the ability to succeed, it wouldn't have mattered if he hadn't made the specific friends he did throughout his adventures. However, the reason he made the friends he made was because of his own attitude of not giving up along with kind nature, which was what drew people to him. He met the people who helped shape into who he was because he always had the potential to do well and was willing to train to reach it there. This is repeated just before the Final Battle with Sasuke, where the two are contrasted. Sasuke's ordeals have taught him to abandon the allies he's made and shoulder the future of the world all by himself; Naruto's ordeals have taught him that no one can be strong by themselves, no matter what they're capable of alone.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Deconstructed. Naruto was a prank-pulling brat in the beginning of the series. However, his entire motivation in doing so was because as the Jinchūriki, he was detested for the actions by the Nine-Tails, and he couldn't bare how they looked at him with contempt or as if he didn't matter. His pranks and hijinks were for some way to get attention and validate his existence. As he grows stronger and gains people he cares for and who care about him, he grows out of it because he doesn't need to act that way anymore.
  • Break the Cutie: Part of his Backstory, as a result of being hated and shunned by nearly his entire village (with notable exceptions), and not having a family to come home to. It's what led to his issues.
  • Breath Weapon: In his Version 2 Chakra Mode, Naruto can fire Tailed Beast Balls from his mouth.
  • Broken Ace: The stronger he becomes the more heartbreak he is forced to deal with. His badass boasts gain credibility the more he matures and he also grows handsome and a weapons-grade badass with various girls in his village taking a liking to him after he saves them from Pain. However, he also suffers massive guilt over not being able to save Sasuke, hides deep insecurities behind a goofy attitude and smile and endures numerous Break the Cutie ordeals one of which includes his parents sacrificing themselves so that he could survive and sealing the Nine-Tailed Fox inside him when he was just a baby and his best friend whom he is trying to save trying to kill him numerous times. There's also the fact that should Akatsuki take the nine-tailed fox from him, he'll die. He's also determined to save Sasuke to the point of losing an arm to him.
  • Broken Hero: Between his past, Sasuke and Pain...
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Downplayed with Hinata. Naruto is the near epitome of Determinator, Magnetic Hero, and The Heart—he's the one who usually brings someone else out of their brooding self-loathing attitude. However, during the moments that have even him reach the Despair Event Horizon, it has always been Hinata (the girl who was initially very self-deprecating of herself) who gives him the strength to gain back his confidence. Such moments include Hinata encouraging Naruto right before his fight against Neji in Chapter 98, and then Hinata slapping sense into Naruto when he almost gives in to Obito's Breaking Lecture following Neji's Heroic Sacrifice in Chapter 615.
  • Bully Hunter: Back when they were younger, Naruto saved Hinata from getting picked on.
  • Bumbling Dad: Becomes one in the Boruto anime, at least according to Boruto. While the village treats him as the venerable Seventh Hokage, his own son sees him as a "way uncool" dad who frequently oversleeps and puts his shoes on wrong.
  • Butt-Monkey: More so at the start of the series, but it gradually got better once people started being nicer to him and he found true friendship within the Konoha 11. He occasionally relapses in this role in the more comedic fillers and episodes as the manga —and anime— went on.

    C-E
  • Calling the Old Man Out: When he first meets his father, the first thing he does is punch Minato in the stomach (albeit after smiling at the revelation and getting privacy from the Nine-Tails) before demanding to know why he sealed the Nine-Tails inside of him in the first place, tearfully recalling everything that happened to him as a result before managing to calm himself.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Naruto often gets a case of this, most likely because he thinks that either no one would care, for embarrassing reasons or that it could make things worse, particularly for him or someone he cares about.
  • Cast from Hit Points:
    • Using his Version 2 Jinchūriki Transformation shortens his lifespan due to Kurama's chakra both destroying and healing his cells.
    • In Boruto, his Baryon Mode uses his and Kurama's chakra as fuel for a process resembling nuclear fusion, granting him immense power but risking killing them.
  • Caring Gardener: His hobby is watering plants.
  • Chain of People: Naruto replicates to pull this off by himself, occasionally.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Believe it!"
  • Character Development: Naruto gains enormous amounts of maturity throughout the series.
    • Let's use his intent of becoming Hokage: At the start, Naruto wanted to become Hokage to have the people of his village respect him. Over the course of the series, he wants to become Hokage in order to protect them.
    • Naruto starts out as a boastful Bratty Half-Pint who thinks he's the most talented, but couldn't back it up at times. By the middle of Part II, Naruto becomes more humbled and realizes that there are people out there who are probably stronger than him, and has now developed into one of the strongest ninjas of his home and in existence. In other words, boasting loser -> doubting hero.
    • By Part II, Naruto has toned down the exuberant energy he had in Part I.
    • After he defeats Nagato and learns about the wars and hatred that created Pain, he becomes a lot more concerned with trying to dismantle the Cycles of Revenge that plagues the shinobi world and cause so much fighting.
    • The Last has Naruto understanding romantic love, which helps him realize his true romantic feelings for Hinata. It was the last bit of development he had to go through in order to accept his painful childhood and live the happy fulfilling life that his parents wanted for him. This is indicated when he sets aside Kushina's green scarf in favor of Hinata's red one, showing that he is finally ready to let go of his past and look to a happier future, with Hinata by his side.
  • Character Tics: Like his mother, he tends to scratch the back of his head when flattered.
  • Chick Magnet: Not so much in the manga, but he usually manages to get at least one more girl to fall in love with him in each Filler arc of the anime. The final movie, The Last, shows that Naruto is now this in canon; his popularity has exploded to the point where girls in Konoha fawn over him, younger ones call him "Naruto-senpai", and pile gifts onto the clueless blond bastard. Poor guy seems exasperated with the entire situation.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Hinata, the girl who has admired, acknowledged, and loved him for the way he is since the day they met. He finally realizes his feelings for her and reciprocates her love in The Last, and from the ending credits and the epilogue onward, they're Happily Married with two children.
  • Chosen Conception Partner: In the first Shippuden movie, Shion falls for Naruto over the course of the story. The final scene has her ask for his help "passing her power to the next priestess". Everyone present (except for Naruto), is shocked because they know what she's asking. (She's asking him to get her pregnant.) Naruto happily makes his "promise of a lifetime" to do so.
  • The Chosen One: According to Jiraiya, Naruto is the one child of an ancient prophecy destined to save the world and not Nagato (aka Pain) or Minato as Jiraiya always thought. Though it's later hinted that they're all The Chosen One. Might as well be just Naruto, though, since the other two are dead. Further as the son of the Fourth Hokage, godson of one of the legendary Sannin, having the absurd chakra reserves of the Uzumaki clan, being host of the most powerful tailed beast, and the reincarnation of the Sage of Six Paths son, and by proxy the successor to the First Hokage.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: A defining trait, actually. If there's a cause, Naruto will fight for it. The guy refuses to give up his quest to save Sasuke, despite Sasuke stating he wants to kill him and was even willing to forgive the man who killed the closest person he had to a father figure. Naruto has it bad during the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc, where he insists on breaking out of hiding because he can't bear to sit back while his friends die to protect him, and pretty much takes the task of winning the war on himself, sending clones to help every division and protecting his fellow shinobi left, right and center, but Itachi reminds him that though he has gotten stronger, he doesn't have to do it alone.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: He has an average build with his baggy clothes on, and wasn't considered attractive by most girls in Konohagakure... pity they never saw him with his shirt off.
  • Class Clown: Naruto used to act as the class clown in the Leaf Village Academy, driven by his deep-seated fear of being left alone.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: When Naruto uses the Version 2 chakra cloak - which happened automatically at four tails - he is insanely powerful, but it allows the Nine-Tails to assume control of his body and shortens his lifespan.
  • Cock Fight: In The Last, even though saving the world from Moon's crush is primary, his love for Hinata is what really fuels him against his rival in love Toneri Otsutsuki, who wants to kill him specifically for the very same reasons. During the Final Battle he exclaims he won't let the world end "because he needs more time to show Hinata just how much he loves her." Of course, he needs to defeat Toneri first.
  • Color Motif: Orange. His clothing is largely consistent of orange clothing and the color represents his enthusiastic personality, especially in Part I. He even Lampshades it at one point in Part II, dubbing himself "Konoha's Orange Hokage". He can also be associated with black since it has been shown on his clothing since the beginning of Part II and onward, as a means to represents his maturity.
  • Combination Attack:
    • Has one with Yamato which combines his Wind Style Rasengan with Yamato's Water Style Tearing Torrent.
    • In filler, he can perform Wind Release: Toad Oil Bullet with Gamatatsu and Wind Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet with both Tatsu and Gamakichi.
    • He can also combine the Wind Style Rasenshuriken with Sasuke's Inferno Style Flame Control.
    • He combines his Rasengan with Hinata's Eight Trigrams Twin Lions Crumbling Attack in The Last.
  • Confusion Fu: Naruto may not be the brightest bulb nor have a style, but his fast mind and unpredictable nature mean that he can land surprising strategies.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: His ability to make a good 1000+ clones of himself is this. To that point, if he creates 1-5, they're usually the key to his victory, but almost any time he goes over 10 or so (which turns out to be his most common strategy), they turn into cannon fodder, as their main weakness is that they usually go poof with just one hit.
  • Cooldown Hug: Gives one to Dark-Naruto in their second meeting.
  • Cosmic Plaything: He had the most powerful demon in the world sealed in him as an infant, grew up a neglected orphan not knowing why the entire village shunned him, finally made some friends only for his best friend to Face–Heel Turn and try to kill him. He has an organization of super-powered psychos out to get him. He can't use too much of the demon's power without it killing him or driving him mad. While things have slowly been getting better, one can't help but still feel for the guy at times.
  • Costume Evolution: After the Time Skip, Naruto went from wearing a complex-looking jacket and pants with some accessories added to a simpler, black and orange jacket and pants with little to no add-ons.
  • Covert Pervert: Despite his habit of calling out adults he considers 'perverts' (especially Jiraiya) pre-Time Skip and taking advantage of them with his Sexy Jutsu, Naruto seems to be like Jiraiya after all.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: In The Last, after Naruto realizes he's in love with Hinata, he acts like this every time his rival in love Toneri shows up. Screenwriter Maruo Kyozuka stated in the movie's program guide that, with Kishimoto's direct and complete editorial supervision, he deliberately wrote Toneri to be so smug and good-looking that Naruto's romantic feelings "flare up" whenever Toneri tries to take Hinata away from him.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: As pointed out by Tenten in Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth:
Tenten: "He's kind of a dimwit, and a scatter brain, and a little clumsy, and a butthead, and cheap, and perverted, and greedy, and egotistical, and oblivious, and a dork, but you can't let your guard down!"
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto finally befriends Kurama, allowing them to work together as a team, and unlocks his two new forms, Kurama Mode and Tailed Beast Mode to defeat and restrain five Tailed Beasts all at once.
    • [[Spoiler: Subverted with his fight against Ten-Tails Madara, after recieving Six Paths Chakra from Hagaromo, he gained enough power to push Madara back, however it becomes a more even fight when Madara absorbed the God Tree, becoming even stronger.]]
    • In Boruto, Naruto learns Baryon Mode and uses it against Isshiki. This form too not only overwhelms Isshiki, but also drastically reduces his lifespan, which works in Naruto’s advantage because Isshiki was resurrected in an imperfect vessel. The only reason Naruto didn’t finish him off is because of Baryon Mode’s time limit and Isshiki’s quick thinking.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Only in Sage Mode — he has yellow eyes with his blond hair.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique:
    • Naruto gets his Futon, Rasenshuriken, in the second half of the manga. It's so powerful that it causes widespread cellular damage to the arm he executes it with. The damage is microscopic, so healing jutsus can't repair it, and Naruto's own Healing Factor is so overworked that it reduces his lifespan. Tsunade tells him not to use it again. Then he masters his Sage Mode and perfects it to the point that he can throw it and nullify the risk to himself.
    • Naruto's Nine-Tails is essentially a Superpowered Evil Side; at deeper levels, it also shortens his lifespan. Naruto winds up befriending Kurama, which allows him access to its full power without having to physically transform.
    • In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter 52, Kurama teaches him Baryon Mode. This grants him even more power than his other modes because it combines his and Kuruma's chakra into a new type of energy, but it also consumes their chakra until one of them dies. It also consumes his opponent's life span upon close contact with them.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: For all of his childhood, Naruto was hated by nearly the entire village (save for a very few number of people who were always nice to him) for reasons that he didn't know of. His parents were nowhere to be found and, as a result, he suffered from extreme loneliness.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: After Part I, Naruto started wearing darker clothing for the rest of the series.
    • Part II: Naruto's jacket was much more form-fitting with the blue parts changed to black and the color extending from around the neck and shoulders, down the front and sleeves. The metal portion of his forehead protector had moved to a long black bandanna, and he wore black sandals instead of blue.
    • The Last: He wears a black uniform-style jacket with an orange zipper and still keeps the black headband. While off-duty, Naruto wears an orange hooded sweatshirt and black and orange shorts with sandals.
    • Chapter 700: He now wears an orange sweatshirt with black stripes, along with black pants and sandals.
  • Death Glare:
    • When he thought Haku had killed Sasuke, Naruto tapped into Kurama's chakra for the first time and gave Haku a glare so full of Killing Intent that he was frightened.
    • Gave this to the Nine-Tails in Chapter 538 and even it was afraid.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Something of an inversion, The Third Raikage resurrected by Edo Tensei was shilled as being an incredibly strong one-man army (literally) that beat the Eight-Tails in a fight. The man tanked Naruto's strongest attack and was only defeated when Naruto recreated the way he got his scar; by having him run himself through with his own technique. Played Straight in his battle with Pain.
  • De-power: While he would continue to improve the abilities he retained (such as becoming able to make and throw Rasenshurikens without clones), Naruto went through a number of both explicit and implicit losses of power after achieving his highest level of power at the end of the 4th Great Ninja War, the implicit ones often going (so far) without much or sometimes any explanation.
    • After Kaguya is resealed, Hagoromo takes back the markings he placed on Naruto and Sasuke's hands. With them gone, Naruto loses the ability to use the seal, and also loses the incredible healing power it enabled him to use on other people.
    • Naruto is implied to lose the use of his Truth Seeking Orbs after his final battle with Sasuke as they have not been seen since. Beyond information in the databook noting that a destroyed Truth Seeking Orb cannot be remade (and it being possible they were destroyed in the clash with Indra's Arrow), no further details on their loss have been explained. Notably the number of orbs he possesses decreases over the course of him fighting Madara, Kaguya and then Sasuke, as he loses at least a few of them in various ways.
    • Naruto using the powers of levitation hasn’t been seen again since the movie The Last, (he can move quickly enough and jump far enough to still look like he is flying, but no explicit levitation). Even in The Last he only uses it near the end and for his kiss with Hinata, despite flight having been something that would have been very useful in a number of earlier events. It’s possible that he still has access to it but chooses to almost never use it for an, as of yet, unknown reason.
    • During the Boruto series, Kurama sacrifices himself via Baryon Mode in order to ensure Isshiki's defeat. Kurama explicitly notes this will make Naruto a good deal less powerful than before, though given examples like Gaara (who retained sand powers after losing Shukaku) it is at present unclear just how many powers Naruto has lost from this, though Sakura warns him that he can no longer perform the massive attacks that had become central to his fighting style.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Happens thrice.
    • The first was when Pain seemingly kills Hinata right in front of him. Naruto is so consumed by rage and grief that he willingly submits his body and soul to the Nine-Tails, only to be stopped by the spirit of his long lost father.
    • The second was when Neji is killed by Obito and the subsequent Breaking Speech nearly causes Naruto to give up once more, only to be roused into action once more by Hinata.
    • The third was in The Last, after Hinata "rejects" him and "accepts" Toneri's marriage proposal. Screenwriter Maruo Kyozuka confirmed in the movie's program guide that Naruto actually crossed the DEH this time, by stating that Naruto is "at rock-bottom" and is in "such a pitiable state" for the first time ever, and he even outright calls it Naruto's "lowest point."
  • Determinator: Naruto does not give up ever. He doesn't go back on his word. He won't die until he becomes Hokage. And he'll never stop until he brings back Sasuke.
    • This really shows through when Naruto sends shadow clones to go to all fronts of the Fourth Shinobi World War and help out everyone. One of his particular clones fought against the Edo!Kage and Madara Uchiha himself. Bear in mind a simple attack is supposed to disperse a shadow clone, and numerous times, this clone mentioned how he really felt like just fading away, but he kept fighting to try and protect everyone.
    • The most extreme example is after his last fight with Sasuke. He's battered, tired, bloodied and right hand got chopped off, yet he still make a point that if Sasuke wants to fight he can still give him RIGHT NOW!
  • Deus Exit Machina: After becoming Hokage, Naruto becomes increasingly entrenched in his bureaucratic and political duties. As such, he is rarely able to go out of his way to deal with threats unless they come directly to the Leaf Village. Naturally, this prevents him from turning every fight into an effortless Curb-Stomp Battle due to how ridiculously powerful he is compared to everyone in the main cast not named Sasuke.
  • Devoted to You: In The Last, Naruto becomes this to Hinata after he realizes he's in love with her, and he vows to properly return the love she has held for him since forever, which is the impetus for them to finally become an Official Couple.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Did not see Hinata being in love with a guy like him.
  • Die or Fly: A running theme is that whenever Naruto tries to develop the next major part of his skillset, a bad guy will interrupt, often requiring the perfected form of his new skill to defeat. Shadow Clone, Rasengan, Wind Style, and even Tailed-Beast Bomb were all developed mid-battle, and the creation of the Chakra Cloak required him to fight Kurama first. Only Sage Mode was achieved in relative peace, but even then he was forced to fight Pain immedately after mastering it.
  • Disabled Love Interest: Inverted. By the end of the manga, Naruto replaces his right arm with an artificial one and The Last shows how he and Hinata fell in love before marrying and having kids.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: His Sexy Jutsu is meant to distract people by getting them sexually aroused. It's so powerful that it works on talented ninjas like Hiruzen (the Third Hokage) in Chapter 1, Jiraya (one of the Legendary Sannin) on multiple instances (not surprising because he's a Dirty Old Man), and even Sakura (twice). Hell, not even Kaguya, the goddess of the Narutoverse could resist it. She even had a smile on her face.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Towards Sakura in Part I, prior to his Character Development. Finally Defied after Chapter 469, in which he drops this behavior entirely.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: In Naruto Gaiden, this is Naruto's almost word-for-word warning to Shin Jr, accentuated by Kurama's withering Death Glare. The kids take the hint and back down, looking ready to faint from fear.
  • Doppelmerger: A feature of the Shadow Clone technique is that when the user dispels and reabsorbs their clones, they also get any information they discovered that they couldn't see in their real body. Naruto's mentors decide to have him use hundreds of the Shadow Doppelgangers to practice the same techniques all at the same time and thus accelerate his training.
  • Doting Parent: To his two kids, though he engages in this trope more with his daughter; his son, while appreciative, tends to become exasperated when overloaded with affection. Naruto even bought out a whole store and got tons of presents for Himawari's birthday party. During "Parent and Child Day", a holiday created by Naruto to deepen the bonds between families, Naruto hung out with Himawari the entire day, though he also made sure to make time for Boruto in the end.
  • Dub Induced Plothole: After defeating Neji in the final round of the Chunin Exams, Naruto claims he failed the Shadow Clone Jutsu multiple times. In actuality, it was the basic Clone Jutsu he failed. He actually mastered the Shadow Clone variant hours after coming across it
  • Dueling Messiahs: Exemplified in his fight with Pain. Naruto aims for peace. Pain also did, but by creating a horrific jutsu that would scar everyone into peace.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: To the point that an observant person can't help but wonder if Naruto's Idiot Hero status is just an exaggeration due to a combination of him being always Surrounded by Smart People, who for a long time continuously see him as a failure, and being alienated for his Jinchuriki status and quirks.
    • He tells Konohamaru that trying to become the Hokage won't be an easy path.
    • During the second stage of the Chunin Exam, Team 7 is attacked by Orochimaru, disguised as another examinee. Seeing how outclassed they are, Sasuke moves to give Orochimaru his scroll (The teams that have a Heaven and Earth scroll pass, and Orochimaru had the other one), but Naruto stops him, pointing out that there's no guarantee that someone so Obviously Evil will just be satisfied with a scroll. Orochimaru admits this, as his real goal was infecting Sasuke with his curse mark.
    • He gives Jiraiya a comical beating when the old man spent all of Naruto's money.
    • After his first fight with Sasuke ended in a draw (due to Kakashi's interference), he bluntly tells Sakura that she has to stay out of their fight. Sounds mean, but Sakura had no right to butt in.
    • His calling out of his father, Minato, for sealing the Nine-Tails inside has some merit to it.
  • Dumb Blond: Downplayed. Naruto isn't the sharpest kunai in the pouch, especially when it comes to social graces or booksmarts; however, he's surprisingly perceptive and a cunning battle tactician.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: At the end of the manga, he managed to bring Sasuke back for good and patched up his friendship with Team 7. In The Last, Naruto was also able to find true love in Hinata, after finally realizing his feelings for her. He and Hinata later marry, start a family, and have two children, Boruto and Himawari. The Stinger showed said family as a warm and happy one. Not only that, he finally became Hokage after years of struggling and suffering.
  • Earned Stripes: He makes a big deal out of wearing his shinobi headband. He was almost the only kid to flunk his class until mastering an A-Level Jutsu to earn it from Iruka personally. When Sasuke stops wearing his own, Naruto takes it as a personal attack on their customs and training.
  • Elemental Powers: Naruto's natural elemental Chakra affinity is Wind. However, due to gaining Chakra from each of the 9 Bijuu, by the end of the series, he gains access to the remaining classical elements (Earth, Water, and Fire), along with Lightning. Due to how elemental Chakras work in Naruto, he is also able to combine various elements for more advanced versions, including Lava (a combination of Earth and Fire), Magnet (a combination of Wind and Earth), and Boil (a combination of Fire and Water). In addition to these, he also has access to the less traditional elements of Yin (Spiritual energy), Yang (Physical energy), and Yin-Yang (Spiritual energy and Physical energy).
  • The Empath: Naruto gains the ability to sense negative emotions while using the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra after he defeated it.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: The only jutsus he had at first were Sexy Jutsu and Harem Jutsu, and he had trouble developing them. However, his determination and Heroic Will Power pulled him through getting them. Now he's a full-powered Ninja.
  • Enemy Within:
    • Kurama fulfilled this role throughout Part I and especially early in Part II, though he mellowed out and underwent a Heel–Face Turn.
    • Aside from Kurama, he also confronts Dark!Naruto, the manifestation of his suppressed rage and hatred towards Konoha.
  • Enlightenment Super Power: Sage Mode, which actually requires him to meditate, or at least stand still, to activate..
  • Et Tu, Brute?:
    • When he finds out that Kabuto, the nice, fumbling guy who helped them through the Forest of Death is Orochimaru's spy, he's visibly hurt. Then, he resolves to kick the traitor's ass.
    • Definitely his reaction when Sasuke said that he is leaving his friends for the matter of getting stronger.
  • Everybody Has Standards: Despite the emotional and physical strain Sasuke has put him through, Naruto has never given up on his old friend. The one time that it looked like Naruto wouldn't forgive Sasuke was when he, along with Sarada, thought Sasuke had Sarada with Karin instead of Sakura.
  • Everyone Can See It: After the Invasion of Pain arc, all of their friends in Konoha knew that Hinata was in love with Naruto, except for Naruto himself, due to his emotionally-stunted and lonely childhood. In The Last, when Naruto realizes he's in love with Hinata, he's incredibly obvious with his feelings while she's oblivious, the Irony of which is not lost on anyone. However, considering Kiba's cheerful ribbing to him in Chapter 611 — which Naruto did not deny nor poke fun at — and Sakura's knowing smile at his reveal in The Last, teasing Naruto's feelings for Hinata started long before the movie, and both the movie and Naruto's Image Song released for the movie confirm that he's been subconsciously in love with Hinata since the Chunin Exams arc in Part I. They're Happily Married with two children at the end of the movie and in the epilogue.
Kiba: Don't act tough just because Hinata is here, Naruto!
Sakura: So, you finally get it, you blockhead.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: In the beginning of Part II, Naruto continued to rely on the Nine-Tails' chakra as a result of desperately wanting to save Gaara and Sasuke. He ended up almost killing Sakura twice and Yamato had to have a sit down talk with him about which power he really should rely on. It's only after he was Forced to Watch Hinata get stabbed by Pain after she told him she loved him — in which he was so enraged that he willingly let the Nine-Tails take over, to the point where he was ready to rip off the seal and unleash the Nine-Tails — that he finally understands and starts working on mastering that power.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Gains one in one of his many power-ups, a cross between Tailed Beast Mode and Sage Mode, which resembles a cross in his eyes.
  • Experienced Protagonist: By the time of The Last, he's become a seasoned ninja.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: By the time of The Last, Naruto decided to trim his hair shorter, possibly in honor of Obito.
  • Expy: Kishimoto confirms that he has most of Son Goku's attributes, including a large appetite, incredible natural talent and being an All-Loving Hero with a knack for converting enemies into allies.
  • Eye Colour Change: His eyes are normally blue, but turn red with vertically slitted pupils when he uses Kurama's chakra, yellow with horizontally slitted pupils and a red outline around his eyes when he uses Sage Mode, and orange with cross-shaped pupils when he combines them or uses Six Paths Sage Modenote .
  • Eyes Always Shut: Downplayed, but in the beginning of the series his eyes are closed more often than not, giving him a fox-like appearance that further reinforces his overall fox motif. While this never stops entirely, it becomes increasingly rarer for Naruto to keep his eyes shut like that as the series goes on.

    F-H
  • Facial Markings: Naruto has six whisker-like marks on his cheeks as a result of Kurama being sealed inside his mother.
  • Family Honor: Zig-Zagged. He deeply admired and respected the Fourth Hokage long before he ever found out that the Fourth was his father.
  • Family Theme Naming: A variant. Naruto shares a syllable with his father Minato, his mother Kushina, and his wife Hinata.
  • Fartillery: Though unintentional, he gets the better of Kiba during the Chunin Exams by farting in his face. Given Kiba's super-sensitive nose, it works like a charm.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry:
    • In Part I and Part II, Naruto wears a white swirl with a tassel on the left side.
    • In The Last, he wears a red armband with an Uzumaki crest on his left arm and wraps on his right arm, the latter of which he keeps doing even after becoming Hokage.
  • Fastest Thing Alive: Took this title from the Fourth Raikage after gaining control over Kurama's chakra.
  • Fearless Fool: He fits this to a tee at first glance, as he pretty much leaps into danger with a smile, ready to punch or (as necessary) headbutt his enemies without fear of his own safety. However, Naruto is much more complex than that. In the beginning, the lack of fear was indeed out of recklessness, but after the encounter with the Demon Brothers and his "Oath of Pain", it came out of a desire to prove himself and protect his loved ones. There's only one noticeable (read: glaring) exception: when he's frozen with fear against the Demon Brothers. Although, in his defense, enemy ninja were not expected due to the relatively low importance of that particular mission (or rather, being lied to about it); plus, it was his first real battle.
  • The Fettered: He fuels his determination with his will to keep any promise he ever made.
  • The Final Temptation: Obito offers him this after killing Neji, and Naruto nearly takes it until Hinata slaps it out of him.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Sakura; it took until after the Chunin Exams arc for her to start seeing him in a more positive light.
  • First Friend: Naruto tends to be this to a lot of people who suffered from loneliness. Some of the most notable examples include:
    • Gaara was what Naruto could have become had he remained an outcast without any supporting figures in his life. Naruto overcoming him and explaining how he gains his strength from his friends and loved ones caused Gaara to change his outlook on life, becoming a loyal friend and a great leader to his village.
    • It's revealed Naruto was this to Hinata, though he didn't know it at the time. He went out of his way to protect her from three bullies, despite not knowing who she was. This event would cause Hinata to become the first person to acknowledge and believe in Naruto, admiring his determination and becoming inspired to keep trying. This makes it all the more heartwarming when Naruto finally realizes his feelings for her and reciprocates her love in The Last.
  • First Kiss:
  • First Love: Hinata is this for Naruto. The Tagline for The Last even outright confirms this, as it states "The last story is the first love." As it goes, Hinata is also his One True Love, and the one he gets Happily Married to in the end.
  • Flash Step: Once he has befriended the Nine-Tails he became fast enough to outpace the Raikage, and to a lesser extent with Sage Mode, where he intercepted Asura Pain mid-attack and shredded him with a Rasengan before anyone else could react.
  • Flight: Comes with the powers of Asura.
  • Fluffy Tamer: He manages to befriend all of the tailed beasts including Kurama, the Nine Tailed Fox, self-proclaimed "living incarnation of hatred".
  • Flying Brick: His Super Mode gives him: durability, speed, ability to throw numerous Rasenshurikens without limit, and as mentioned above flight.
  • Folk Hero: Due to Naruto's past heroics throughout his shinobi career, especially helping saving the world, this has made him such a legendary figure worldwide people from all over will forever know his story during and after his lifetime.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: This is Naruto's attitude towards Nagato after all the harm that he's caused. After hearing of all the hardship Nagato went through which led him to be the person he was, Naruto realizes that even if he can't stop himself from hating him for what he's done, he will still forgive him, as not doing so would only perpetuate the cycle of hatred and revenge that was plaguing the world of shinobi.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Several times he's not used techniques that would have been really helpful with the situation at hand, for no apparent reason. The most climactic example is perhaps not using the summoning technique in his fight with Sasuke at the end of Part I, when his stated intent was bringing Sasuke back home even if he had to break all his bones, something that Gamabunta, back then, would have done with probably little effort.
  • Former Teen Rebel: Naruto himself becomes this in the Distant Finale. Long gone is the annoying, loud prankster. Now Naruto is the Hokage and has a family of his own to take care of. That isn't to say he still isn't a knucklehead, but he isn't the Idiot Hero he used to be.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine: Extroverted, energetic, assertive, warm and fun.
  • For Want Of A Nail: If Iruka hadn't spoken in his defense against Mizuki, Naruto would have walked the same path Gaara and Sasuke did, a fact he repeatedly dwells on.
  • Freak Out: Happens thrice.
  • Friend to All Children: By Part II and in anime Filler, Naruto shows a great fondness towards younger kids. He even takes on a Papa Wolf mentality for the children of Konoha when he becomes Hokage.
  • From Zero to Hero: Naruto Uzumaki starts out as an orphaned social pariah who is almost completely untalented and overconfident, but once he finds his friends and begins to hone his abilities, he realizes what it means to be a hero and fights to protect them. From there, he would go on to become a hero to Konoha and (eventually) the world at large.
  • Gender Bender: "Oiroke No Jutsu", translated "Sexy Jutsu", turns him into a busty naked female version of himself (occasionally clothed, when he wants to, as Episode 2 proved). He can even combine it with the shadow clone just to create the Harem jutsu.
  • Generation Xerox: Jiraiya, a member of the Legendary Sannin and Naruto's godfather-mentor, has more on one occasion remarked that Naruto resembles and is surely able to surpass his former student the Fourth Hokage (Naruto's father) and even himself (in terms of awesome and pervertedness).
    • Not to mention his mother being the previous Jinchūriki of Kurama.
    • In addition to that, it turns out he's also quite similar to the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, who is a distant relation and also Asura, AKA the Senju ancestor, youngest son of the Sage of Six Paths and said Sage's chosen successor. Though that last one is Justified as Naruto is Asura's chakra reincarnation and the successor to his will.
    • Though there are some subversions, as Naruto being a Born Winner and literally destined to succeed means he can overcome the hardships and limitations that plagued his predecessors and succeed where they failed.
    • Also, Iruka, who recognizes that the reason for Naruto's post-graduation tomfoolery was identical to his own; growing up without parents, the goofball attitude was just a cry for attention.
    • His own son, Boruto, is in turn almost exactly like him at the start of the series. Naruto even catches him painting on the Hokage Monument the same way he did back in Chapter 1.
  • Fuma Shuriken: It seems to be acknowledged as Naruto's signature weapon in console games, despite the fact that he's only used it twice: once in Part I as part of a combo attack with Sasuke (where he disguised himself as the shuriken) and once in Part II (where he transformed his clone into one).
  • Genius Ditz: He may normally be an idiot, but the plans and strategies he comes up at the span of seconds while under pressure are definitely to be admired. It has gotten to the point it is Lampshaded at various points in Part II.
  • Giving Someone the Pointer Finger: Naruto does this a lot. Being the brash, immature loud-mouth that he is, it's not surprising that he doesn't have manners, either. In the original before Shippuden, he usually pointed when accusing someone (usually a teacher or Sasuke) of undermining him or doing something behind his back.
  • Glory Seeker: He's a lonely boy, and he wants to become Hokage so the rest of the townsfolk will respect him. Eventually, he learns humility.
  • Goal in Life: Naruto dreams of becoming Hokage, the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village, and gaining the respect of his people after a childhood of neglect and loneliness.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Before earning his Ninja headband. He was actually supposed to wear them for the whole series, but the headbands were invented because they were easier to draw. They then became a cultural motif and given to just about every character.
  • Golden Super Mode: One of his plethora of transformations, after befriending Yang Kurama, which allows him to use the Nine-Tails' power while staying in control. After awakening his power as the reincarnation of Asura he gains what seemingly is a perfected mode of this, complete with the Truth-Seeking Orbs that both Obito and Madara use as the hosts of the Ten-Tails.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: Zigzagged. Naruto is the Book Dumb Idiot Hero, but it's been implied time and time again that the reason behind his seemingly idiotic nature is that he grew up without anyone properly teaching him anything outside of the academy. But, despite seeming like an idiot, he is not one. As explained under his Genius Ditz and Hidden Depths sections, Naruto is able to come up with ingenious strategies on the fly.
  • Good Is Not Soft: He's genuinely friendly and cordial, but he will never tolerate anyone hurting his friends or a weaker person, and he'll protect these people, even if it means to kill.
  • Good Parent: In adulthood, Naruto has gained much wisdom. When Boruto defaced the Hokage Monument, Naruto knew that Boruto just wanted his father's attention as he doesn't have much personal time as Hokage. Despite reprimanding Boruto for his behavior, Naruto helps him do graffiti on his own face on the monument, even though it caused him to be late to the five Kage meeting, proving himself a loving father and husband.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: In The Last, he realizes he's in love with Hinata because he noticed that Toneri took an obsessive interest in her. Confirmed by screenwriter Maruo Kyozuka in the movie's program guide.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He was this towards Sasuke, but only in Part I. He was jealous of Sasuke's skills and reputation, and he was jealous that Sasuke was the one Sakura had a crush on. However, his jealousy towards Sasuke ended in the middle of Part II, after he finally achieved his lifelong dream of being acknowledged by all of Konoha upon him defeating Pain, after his "feelings" for Sakura finally came to an end when she gave him her fake love confession and he rejected her outright in Chapter 469, and after he finally admitted to Sai and to himself that he always knew Sakura only ever loved Sasuke and would never love him romantically in Chapter 474. Sakura calls him out on this in The Last, stating that his jealousy towards Sasuke, his desire to beat out Sasuke at something for once, was the only reason why he had a crush on her—which was implied in Chapter 3.
  • Grow Old with Me: In The Last, Naruto proposes this to Hinata, having finally realized her feelings and his own for her.
Naruto: Hinata... do you remember that lesson in class? The one with, "If the end of the world came, who would you spend your last day with?" I couldn't write anyone's name down. I didn't know my parents, and I didn't have any friends... But now, I know exactly whom I'd choose. I want to be with you. Now and forever, until I die... I want to be with you, Hinata!
  • Guile Hero: More-so in Part II, Naruto comes up with a number of surprisingly good schemes for a supposed Idiot Hero.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Naruto has blond spiky hair, and he's a Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold who develops into an All-Loving Hero.
  • Handicapped Badass: After his final clash with Sasuke following Kaguya's defeat, Naruto lost his right forearm. It was replaced with an artificial one, created from Hashirama's cells by Tsunade, which is completely covered in bandages.
  • Handwraps of Awesome: Naruto wears some on his right hand, having lost the original one during his final fight with Sasuke, he keeps his prosthetic wrapped up.
  • Happily Adopted: While never formally adopted, Iruka is like a surrogate father to Naruto. So much so that, when Naruto got married, he asked Iruka to stand in for his father.
  • Happily Married: His marriage to Hinata is happy and fruitful. An official illustration depicting Naruto's present family, has him reaching his hand out to the back of his wife, who blushes and smiles.
  • Healing Factor: Naruto has possessed accelerated healing since he was a genin. Any injuries would begin healing slowly within seconds and during intense physical output where he would require days to recover, he would only need one night's sleep. Using the Nine Tail's chakra in combat, he displayed accelerated healing to the point when Sasuke pierced a hole through Naruto's shoulder with Chidori, Naruto was completely healed within seconds. Subverted when he uses too much of the fox's chakra, since it can both damage and heal him, slowly reducing his lifespan.
  • Healing Hands: Well, more like Healing Hand (his right hand) after he receives his new powers from the Sage of Six Paths. Just a simple touch and he is able to re-ignite Gai's chakra and save his life after Gai opens all Eight Gates to fight Madara. Also as impressive is when he is able to recreate Kakashi's left eye with a simple touch after it is stolen by Madara.
    • His new Healing Hands have limits, though. He is unable to completely restore Obito, with Sakura explicitly saying that Obito is still dying despite his best efforts, and he is unable to save Obito from Kaguya's Ash-Killing Bone technique. Also, the limits are further defined by the ultimate results. Naruto is able to recreate Kakashi's left eye, but it's Kakashi's original left eye, not the one he received from Obito. Furthermore, while Naruto is able to save Guy from death, the final chapter shows that Guy's exertions left him bound to a wheelchair.
    • However, it should be noted that while Naruto does have the ability to heal, he actually doesn't know anatomy nor any medical ninjutsu. Thus he could be considered an Unskilled, but Strong variant of this; he's able to use huge amounts of Yang release to create the missing bodyparts and give the vitality, but has no real knowledge or skill in healing people. In essence, he is applying a form of brute force to healing and likely just supercharging the body's capabilities to heal itself.
  • The Heart: Naruto is an expert at Defeat Means Friendship and tends to be so idealistic, honest, straightforward and caring that it causes people around him to catch on to it. Also odd, considering that he was a bit of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold in Part I. After defeating Pain, he becomes something of a Messianic Archetype.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Goes through a number of these moments in Part II:
    • Failing to save Gaara on his first mission after he returned home from his two-and-a-half-year training.
    • Unable to get Sasuke back the second time.
    • When he found out about the death of his beloved teacher, Jiraiya.
    • Getting a Break the Badass speech from Pain, after the latter managed to kick his ass.
    • Sasuke becoming a war criminal, and Naruto unable to convince the Raikage to forgive his friend. The poor guy even hyperventilates and then passes out for a few hours.
    • Neji taking the fatal blow to protect him and Hinata. Thankfully Hinata manages to snap him out of it.
    • Hinata "rejecting" his first Love Confession in The Last. After being knocked out for three days, Naruto believes that she really did reject him, spends a whole day and night curled up in a Troubled Fetal Position, and comes very close to giving up on everything. Thankfully Sakura snaps him out of it by telling him that Hinata has only ever loved him, just like how she herself has only ever loved Sasuke, and that will never change.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: An orphan who has the tendency to make friends out of his enemies.
  • Hellish Pupils: His pupils turn into vertical slits when he's using the Nine-Tails' chakra.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: Zig-Zagged. He has spiky blond hair similar to his father's, but he keeps it shorter and crops it shorter akin to Obito's, beginning in The Last.
  • Hero Protagonist: He's the main protagonist of the Naruto franchise and ends up playinh a crucial role in the Fourth Shinobi World War, tying hand-in-hand with being one of the Big Goods.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: For most of his childhood, he was scorned by most of the village because of his being the host for the Nine-Tails. He slowly proves everyone wrong and is now the village hero.
  • Heroic BSoD: Naruto usually handles himself outstandingly well, but some things that happen are enough to drive even him into a state of gaping, awestruck desperation. So far it's happened four times:
    • The first came when Hinata was almost fatally stabbed by Pain right in front of him. Naruto crossed the Despair Event Horizon so badly that he completely lost his will to live, to the point where he was ready to release the Nine-Tails.
    • The second came when he learned that Sasuke, who he had dedicated three years of his life to rescuing, had been declared Public Enemy No. 1 and marked for death by every ninja village, including the Hidden Leaf. Naruto responds by hyperventilating and then passing out for a few hours.
    • The third was brought on by Neji's death. It nearly Naruto plunged into the Despair Event Horizon, until Hinata gave him the Get A Hold Of Yourself Man + Rousing Speech combo.
    • The fourth was brought on in The Last. Right after Naruto confesses his love to Hinata, she goes with Toneri (in order to have a better chance at saving Hanabi). Thinking that it was a real rejection, Naruto does not take it well at all for three days, spends a whole day and night curled up in a Troubled Fetal Position, and even comes very close to giving up on everything, until Sakura snaps him out of it by telling him that Hinata has only ever loved him, similar to how she herself has only ever loved Sasuke, and that will never change.
  • Heroic Lineage: Several things.
    • His natural ability to learn-by-doing, which is one of the few things he inherited from his father.
    • His lack of academic prowess, his energetic personality, his short temper, and his Verbal Tic, "Dattebayo!/Believe it!", all of which he inherited from his mother.
    • The Uzumaki clan's natural chakra affinity, strong life energy, and excellent physical health, all of which is necessary to perform the ninjutsu he masters throughout the series.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Beats the shit out of himself if he feels he's being "useless". Actually, the more powerful he gets, the more he seems prone to this, perhaps because he used to suck earlier in his lifetime, or to keep balance in his characterization (boasting loser -> doubting hero). He even claims that he's "not that good of a ninja" after defeating five out of six of Pain's bodies, when few could even defeat one, and before defeating the last and most powerful one. Granted, his opponent was tired and had used most of his chakra in fighting the villagers and nuking the city, but still... Naruto himself once Lampshaded this to Hinata right before the Chunin Exam finals:
Naruto: Hinata... do you... do you really believe that’s true? I may look strong to you, but all I ever do is mess things up. I act tough because I'm so frustrated, but underneath it all, I just feel like I'm just one huge failure.
  • Heroic Vow:
    • The promise he made to Sakura to bring back Sasuke at the end of Part I. Later on Deconstructed, as Naruto grew more desperate to keep this promise and Sakura tried to unburden him from it in Chapter 469. After Naruto called her out for lying and rejected her outright, he renewed his promise not for her anymore, but for his own reasons.
    • There's also the blood vow he made to beat Neji for Hinata, which he successfully managed.
Naruto: Hinata... I promise you. You [Neji]... are going down!!
    • Then there's the vow he made in The Last, to save Hinata from Toneri and properly return her love for him, which he also successfully managed.
Naruto: Hinata, I swear I will save you!
  • Heroic Willpower: He broke free of Black Zetsu through sheer force of will. Sasuke, who was also caught, was powerless against it.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Naruto has a deep respect for the Hokage title, especially the Fourth Hokage, and his dream is to become one in the future.
  • He's Back!: Several times: after his three years training with Jiraiya, then after he fails to bring back Sasuke again, and after Jiraiya's death.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: He has this dynamic with Sasuke.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Naruto is possibly one of the most tragic versions of this trope in Shonen anime and manga history. At first, he seems like the classic Idiot Hero who causes nothing but trouble, pulling pranks for the sake of amusement. Even before the reveal that he has a demon of apocalyptic power sealed in him, he says that no one has ever tried talking to him in a friendly manner, with no friends and family to go home to. Turns out he was verbally abused and treated very coldly by adults and, eventually, their children simply for existing, due to his having the fox demon sealed within him. During the fight against Gaara, he even thinks of what would happen if Iruka or the Third Hokage never cared for him. This speech has often made fanfic writers try to portray a Naruto similar to evil Gaara in this respect. He considers not being able to save Sasuke from The Dark Side as his My Greatest Failure moment.
    • While Gaara is what he could have been, Pain and Tobi take this a step further: they are what he could become if he ever lost his friends and/or his main love interest Hinata, the latter of which almost happened during Pain's attack on Konoha. Both times it's outright stated that under different circumstances he could have been like them. Sasuke too; Naruto himself says that he could've been revenge-driven and seeking Konoha's destruction.
    • Naruto may be an Idiot Hero, but he can be quite observant picking up on things others miss and can retain information casually gathered through conversation. In battle, Naruto has shown to be calm and collected most of the times, but he can get frustrated when he is unable to defeat his opponent. He can also be a quick thinker, making up strategies on the fly or inventive use of his techniques to catch his opponents off guard during the fight, though he can get overexcited and forget some concepts or weaknesses that he himself noted beforehand.
    • In Part I, Naruto frequently sports a big, goofy grin that masks the pain he feels from being all alone. He's so good at it, most people think he doesn't really care about all that. As he makes more friends, his perpetually cheerful demeanor becomes sincere, although he still has unresolved issues; meeting Dark!Naruto in the Waterfall of Truth proves it.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Lifetime achievement award. And it seems it's a hereditary trait between his mother's red and father's yellow, he favors orange. He also gained the ability to access all of the Nine-Tails' chakra without going apeshit. This turns his entire body bright yellow. He can also turn into full-tailed beast form. You can't be much more highly visible than turning into a kaiju-sized fox demon.
  • Holding Hands: Frequently with Hinata, which constantly doubles as a Call-Back. Throughout Hinata's character arc, the one thing she has always wanted was to stand by Naruto's side and hold his hand.
    • First, after she saves him from the Despair Event Horizon in the wake of Neji's death, in order to give her some of his and Kurama's chakra.
    • Again, during The Last, so she may empower him with Hamura's chakra to destroy the Tenseigan and protect him from Toneri's chakra drain.
  • Hollywood Acid: Creates an Acid Rasenshuriken after receiving Saiken's power.
  • Hope Bringer: Slowly but surely became this, to his generation and village by Pain's invasion, and even more so to the world during the war.
  • Hopeless Suitor: To Sakura until Chapter 469. Though he didn't finally admit it until Chapter 474, deep down, Naruto always knew that Sakura only ever loved Sasuke. A part of that was because, as stated in The Last and implied in Chapter 3, Naruto's crush on her never actually went deeper than wanting to win her heart to beat out Sasuke at something for once. After Chapter 469, Naruto moved past this, became a more obvious Sasuke/Sakura shipper from the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc onward, and truly fell in love with and got Happily Married to Hinata.
  • Honor Before Reason: His whole reason for trying to help Sasuke can be summed up as this.
  • Hot-Blooded: When he was a kid he'd more or less charge straight into battle screaming and spamming shadow clones. He's more level-headed in Part II, but still has his moments. The only identifier Itachi gives to Sasori and Deidara is "the one who will start yelling at you." They get pissed at the lack of information, but it works perfectly.
  • Hour of Power: Gained a new Super Mode after befriending Kurama, but he can only use it for a few minutes at first. As they keep working together, they eventually reach perfect synch and can use it indefinitely.
  • Humble Hero: By The Last, Naruto has lost all of his Glory Seeker habits.
  • Hypocrite: Naruto holds a deep admiration for the Hokage title but his first act in the series is to deface the mountain mural of the Hokages.
  • Hypocritical Humour:
    • He constantly calls out adults he considers perverted, while he himself is a bit of a Covert Pervert.
    • Doubles as a Brick Joke. At one point, he gets mad at Konohamaru for using a Sexy Jutsu showing naked guys. And yet, Naruto uses Reverse Harem jutsu to distract Kaguya. Granted, it's implied he gets mad at Konohamaru because he used specifically Sai (who the team just met and don't like) and Sasuke (self-explanatory).

     I-L
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: In Boruto, he pretends to get badly beaten by Delta, in the hopes of she revealing more information about her. Delta however sees right through it and demands him to cut the charade and get serious with her.
  • I Am Who?: He is the reincarnation of the younger son of the Sage of Six Paths.
  • I Am Your Opponent: Says it word-for-word against Tobi after the Impure World Resurrection is deactivated.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me:
    • A Gender Inverted variant. Considering Naruto's lonely past, somewhere deep down he grew to believe that it would be impossible for any girl to love him for the person he is, much less a girl as kind and beautiful as Hinata, which is why he was greatly surprised when she confessed her love for him during Pain's invasion, and even then for a while he thought she meant she loved him as a friend. It's later on when he finally does understand, realizing his love for her, that he exemplifies this trope. This was confirmed with his Heroic Vow, in which he swears to save Hinata from Toneri and properly return her love for him: He explicitly says, "You always loved me for the way I am" (or "You've loved someone like me forever and ever"), depending on the translation.
    • Plus, there's also Sakura and her fake love confession that made him think that all girls are only interested in guys like Sasuke, something Choji can relate with and even Kankurō can attest to.
Choji: "Time's have changed. Girls aren't as open-minded."
Kankurō: "Don't feel bad. Women always go weak in the knees for the cool, elite type."
  • I Can't Believe I'm Saying This: Said almost word for word when Itachi saves him and Killer Bee from puppet-mode reanimated Nagato.
  • Iconic Outfit: In the first part, he wears a vibrant orange-and-blue jacket and pants, an outfit famous for making him a Highly-Visible Ninja. Also, there's the orange-and-black Shippuden outfit.
  • Ideal Hero: After some Character Development, Naruto becomes this — striving to achieve world peace over war, and always attempting to rescue anyone he can (even foes). He's also a Magnetic Hero, The Chosen One, and The Paragon.
  • The Idealist Was Right: Throughout Part II, he's adamant about getting through to Sasuke and bringing him back to Konoha despite virtually everyone else inside and outside of the Leaf Village, including Sakura, Gaara, and Kakashi, telling him that Sasuke is Beyond Redemption and to just give up on him already. In the end, Naruto succeeds at redeeming Sasuke and bringing him home.
  • Idiot Hero: He's the protagonist and a moderate Book Dumb. Not insufferably stupid, just overly simple, cheerful and carefree at times when it would be better to act serious, thoughtful, and focused. His lack of social graces and tendency to sound ill-informed cause him to look like a nimrod, but you gotta be fair enough to spare him the total idiot billing. This is heavily implied to be the result of growing up without any adult supervision: no-one bothered to take care of his education or correct his mistakesnote . As shown multiple times, once someone does take the time to explain things, he grasps the concept fairly quickly. So, he's more of an Ignorant Hero with a dose of Keet and Leeroy Jenkins.
  • I Gave My Word: Throughout the original series he made it a point to keep his promises, even calling it his "Shinobi Way".
  • I Got Bigger:
    • Before the Time Skip, he was the shortest of the Konoha 11. Afterwards, he ended up being taller than Sakura and as tall as Sasuke. We get a "growth chart" of Naruto over the course of the series during the 590-600 chapters. From the beginning to the end of Part II Naruto grew at least three or four more inches.
    • Naruto gets another growth spurt for The Last, reaching about 5'11".
  • I Hate Past Me: This video depicts the Naruto of Part I interacting with the Naruto of Part II. Though it's not exactly hate, Part II-era Naruto finds himself wondering if his goofy and childish Part I self was really what he used to be like.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Naruto only wishes to be loved and approved of, which is why he pulled pranks and acted like the class clown. This was also his (initial) reason he wanted to be the Hokage.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: He switches from Type B to Type A. Previously alone and desperate for friends, Iruka's encouragement and Team 7 helps Naruto finally succeed in gaining friends and respect. Often the friendships build slowly, but he is also noted to have the strange power to quickly become friends with anyone, even his enemies.
  • Image Song: "Itsu No Hi Ni Mo" ("No Matter What Day It is"), performed by Junko Takeuchi, included in the home release for The Last. It's a response to Hinata's Image Song, "Fuyu no Owari ni" ("At the End of Winter").
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: Naruto's full Tailed Beast form causes a coat made of chakra to form around him.
  • In Harmony with Nature: Sage Mode requires this.
  • Informed Attribute: When Part II originally started, fans were skeptical over all the praise Naruto received for being stronger and smarter, even though the databooks confirm it. After his two years of training with Jiraiya the only change to his moveset was a bigger Rasengan. Almost as if Kishimoto noticed the discrepancy, Naruto started taking a massive level in badass and hasn't looked back since.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Inherited them from his father, the Fourth Hokage. They symbolize his youth, naive personality and inexperience. He in turn passes them on to his and Hinata's children, Boruto and Himawari.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Seems to display this trope to an extent.
    • While he never gets into a romantic relationship with Sakura, he stated to Sai that he couldn't tell her that he had a crush on her if he couldn't keep his promise to her, so he seemed to imply that he was unworthy of her. However, after Chapter 469, he completely stopped being like this towards her.
    • According to Kiba in Chapter 611, he's insecure around Hinata too, hence why he tries to act so cool around her. This was confirmed in The Last. After Sakura tells him about how deep Hinata's love for him is and how she'll never have any other guy in her thoughts, when he vows to himself that he'll save her from Toneri and properly return her love, he explicitly says, "You always loved me for the way I am" (or "You've loved someone like me forever and ever," depending on the translation), which makes it clear that deep down, he felt he was unworthy of being loved by someone like her.
Sakura: "Hinata is a great person. She's almost too good for you."
(Naruto hangs his head even lower as if to say: "No arguments here.")note
  • In-Series Nickname: As a kid, he had on more than one occasion been called the "Number One Hyperactive Knucklehead Ninja" by Kakashi, which caught on here and there.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Naruto and Sarada have this during Naruto Gaiden thanks to Naruto helping Sarada come to terms with her family crisis and being very supportive to her. By the end of the miniseries it seems that this bonding has caused Sarada to want to become the Hokage much like Naruto at that age (in complete contrast to Boruto).
  • Invincible Hero: Notably averts thisnote  during most of his series. Sure, he does win most of his fights, but he also loses a few key ones, most notably the final fight of Part I which turns into his greatest failure. By the end of the series, however, he's grown into this according to everyone, including Sasuke, who might rival him in power, but handily admits to being unable to actually beat him. It's once again averted in Boruto, when the other Otsutsuki start showing up.
  • Irony:
    • Naruto was absolutely horrible at executing the Clone Jutsu (a relatively simple, illusionary copy) during his academy days, but the more advanced and chakra costly Shadow Clone (and Multi Shadow Clone) Jutsu (an actual physical copy) became one of his most famous, powerful, and useful Signature Moves by the time he is an adult.
    • The Nine-Tails has caused nothing but misery and scorn for Naruto since he was a child while he holds a great respect for the Fourth Hokage. It turns out the said Hokage is his father who deliberately sealed the Nine-Tails inside his then infant son. In short, Naruto's biggest hero is the reason for his childhood isolation.
    • When Sakura gave her fake love confession to Naruto as a way to make him stop chasing Sasuke, he told her that he hates people who lie to themselves. As it turns out, he's been unconsciously, yet unintentionally, lying to himself over his own affections for Sakura, as he never actually cared for her as anything more than a close friend or older sister, but thought he loved her because he figured if he got Sakura, the girl who loved Sasuke, to love him, he'd be beating out Sasuke at something for once—which was implied in Chapter 3.
    • Happens again later on. After the Final Battle with Sasuke at the series' end, Naruto's longtime goal of having Sasuke acknowledge a loss to him gets fulfilled, the latter admitting defeat in the face of Naruto's determination. However, Naruto not only doesn't care about that at this point but actually gets angry at Sasuke for seemingly acting like it's still a matter of winning or losing.
    • It took years for Hinata to finally confess her love to Naruto, who couldn't comprehend both her feelings and his own as romantic due to him being Oblivious to Love and not truly understanding the concept of romantic love, although it's later confirmed that he also never thought someone like Hinata would genuinely love him for him, due to his past plaguing him with insecurities. Come The Last, Naruto finally understands what romantic love actually means, which helps him realize the true nature of his feelings for Hinata. As a result, he Cannot Spit It Out that he's in love with her, while Hinata doesn't notice his very obvious feelings. He does eventually spit it out via Freudian Slip, only for Hinata to be unable to respond to his Love Confession due to Toneri's intervention.
  • It's Personal:
    • The Invasion of Pain arc. From killing his beloved sensei to blowing up his village, to (temporarily) killing his other sensei, and then trying to pull a "Not So Different" Remark between Naruto and himself, by the time Naruto actually sees Pain for the first time, he wants him so, SO dead. It gets even more personal for him after Pain stabs Hinata right in front of him.
    • Naruto also sees Obito as a personal enemy, from the being the mastermind behind the Nine Tails attack on konoha, to the being the murderer of Naruto’s parents, to being the reason why Naruto is a Jinchuriki shunned by most of Konoha (save for a few people who were nice always to him), to the death of Neji who died protecting Naruto and Hinata during Fourth Shinobi World War, He considers it very personal after learning all those things Obito had done.
  • It Was with You All Along: In Chapter 29, Haku asked him: "You said to me you wanted to become the best ninja in your village and have everyone acknowledge you. Now, if someone who acknowledged you from the bottom of their heart appeared, wouldn't that someone become the most important person to you?" After years of searching for "that someone", he realizes in The Last that it was Hinata all along. Both Naruto's flashback in Chapter 538 and Kishimoto in this 2015 New York Comic Con interview confirm that Hinata was the very first person to acknowledge him for who he is, long before Iruka did.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: His promise to bring back Sasuke for Sakura is rooted there. Though he also has personal motives as well. After Naruto outright rejects Sakura's fake love confession in Chapter 469, his own motives overtake throughout the rest of the manga.
  • Japanese Delinquents: In Part 1. He doesn't pay attention nor study in class, constantly ditch lessons, and would play pranks on the people of Konoha constantly.
  • Jagged Mouth: Develops one in his Version 2 Jinchūriki Shroud, which leads to the Nine-Tails taking over. His Tailed Beast Mode also has this, being a chakra construct in the shape of the Nine-Tailed Fox.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he can be fairly blunt and quite willing to tell people when he thinks less than highly of them, he at least tries not to, and will gasp when being called out for it. He is nevertheless willing to help when needed. By the end of the series, he matures into a full-on Nice Guy.
  • Keet: Naruto is very energetic and very loud, especially in Part I. He starts toning it down in Part II.
  • Kirk Summation: His reply to Pain's Motive Rant.
  • The Klutz: In Part I, Naruto was quite clumsy when it came to performing ninja skills.
  • Knuckle Cracking: Over and over. More than any mortal knuckle could really take.
  • Kubrick Stare: He gives one to Black Zetsu after throwing him into the Chibaku Tensei along with his mother, Kaguya. Coming from an All-Loving Hero known for Talking the Monster to Death, it's scary.
  • Lady and Knight: Hinata is the Lady (of the Hyuga clan, with a gentle nature, especially towards Naruto) to Naruto's Knight (a ninja with unyielding passion to those he loves, Hinata in particular) of a good variant.
  • Lamarck Was Right: His mother has almost the exact same Verbal Tic ("Dattebane" to his "Dattebayo"), which he couldn't have possibly picked up from her, as he'd been born no more than an hour before she died. The English translation gives them the same verbal tic, rendering both as "y'know" instead of the usual "Believe it!"
  • Large Ham: They don't call him The Number One Hyperactive Knucklehead Ninja for nothing. Downplayed in Part II, but it's still there when he has his Idiot Hero moments.
  • The Leader:
    • Through Character Development, Naruto has achieved this status by leading the entire Ninja World on the ground against Akatsuki. First against the Edo Kage menace, then against the White Zetsus, then against Obito, then against Obito and Madara, and finally against Obito, Madara, and the Ten-Tails. Due to his abilities, his power get people to follow him, and his gigantic heart, he had led the world against the most powerful threat long enough for the Hokages and Sasuke to arrive.
    • While Sasuke starts to panic and begins to just try to rescue himself, Naruto, and Jugo, Naruto keeps his calm after re-entering Tailed Beast Mode and activates all the chakra cloaks he left on the Alliance. After that, Minato teleports everyone out since all their chakra is linked. Even Sasuke is a bit...down when he realizes what Naruto did and has become, since Sasuke could only save three people...and Naruto saved everyone. Tobirama even remarks that Naruto could become a better Hokage than his brother Hashirama and due to Ino transmitting his thoughts, feelings, and heart through the Alliance, he is able to rally them once again to fight Obito and the Shinju. Something Hashirama couldn't do. And eventually Naruto becomes the seventh Hokage.
  • Leaked Experience: This is how Naruto's "train with a hundred doppelgängers" Instant Expert method works. He gains all the experience(s) of the clones when they're dismissed, like a reverse EXP Share.
  • Leeroy Jenkins:
    • Often charges in on his own, and gets called out for it by Yamato, Kakashi and Sakura in the Three-Tails arc. This is even explicitly the reason why he was hidden from what was going on at the beginning of the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc. Of course, due to the fact that his clones enable him to watch his opponent's technique as many times as he needs to, it's to his advantage to be one. Not to mention that has been working on minimizing the drawback of this trait. Ironically, he was the only person who wasn't this trope when everyone went to try to stop Madara from resurrecting. Sasuke and Minato both charged in without a plan, and only Naruto realized that Obito was playing everyone, even Madara, for fools. If everyone had just listened...they'd have had just a killable Madara to deal with, instead of a unkillable Madara + Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Obito on the other side.
    • He matures somewhat during Part I and even more so Part II, learning to use this to trick his enemies. After all, who could have predicted that ninjas would leap out of hiding and attack you?! It seems so un-ninja-like!
  • Leitmotif: In Part I.
  • Light Is Good: An interesting case, because while his clothes in Part II onward have him at Dark Is Not Evil, thanks to it also having shades of his signature bright orange, along with his equally bright personality and powers as well as his chakra being stated by Karin to be bright and warm, he is this as well. In addition, he also has his Chakra Modes, Kurama Avatar, and Six Paths Sage Mode, all of those forms have him turn yellow with shades of orange.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Of the hard-hitting speedster variety. To clarify, he qualifies as this when using the Nine-Tails' power, and also when in Sage Mode.
    • It actually comes to a head in the anime adaptation of his battle with Pain, when he is doing some fighting in his 4-tailed modenote . Then he unleashes hell on Pain in his 6-tailed mode with a series of attacks, including a rapid-fire mini-Tailed Beast Bomb attack and a Tailed Beast Lasernote . Then he goes to his 8-tailed mode and creates a meteor shower with a stream of flames igniting the debris flying out of the Chibaku Tensei.
    • Likewise, he can even outmatch the Raikage's speed, who was previously fastest in the world.
  • Like a Son to Me: Jiraiya thinks of Naruto like a grandson, and Naruto thought of his teacher as another father figure (besides Iruka).
  • Like Brother and Sister: Officially becomes this with Sakura by The Last and Sakura Hiden, especially when she gives him advice on his love for Hinata. In retrospect, this can actually be seen throughout the series, where like Tsunade was with Nawaki, their friendship felt more akin to the relationship between a well-meaning, though at times overbearing older sister and a equally meaning, tall, happy, yet somewhat annoying younger brother.
  • Like Parent, Like Child:
    • Appearance and ability-wise. Appearance-wise, he is a dead ringer for his father with some subtle bits from his mother. Personality-wise he takes the most after his mother (see below). However, both Naruto and Minato have indomitable spirits and fierce ambitions that drive them through all their choices in life. Both are of unwavering loyalty to Konoha and their loved ones—friends and family—and that devotion inspires all those around them. Both have the tendency to create long, complicated names for their jutsu. Both are kinesthetic learners—the type who learns with their body or by doing. Both are Amazon Chasers towards their respective wives, Hinata and Kushina.
    • As stated above, most of Naruto's personality and intelligence came from Kushina: Hot-Blooded nature, ninjutsu style, pulling pranks, Character Tic, Verbal Tic, and being the host of Kurama. Both were Bully Hunters in their youth. Both didn't have a good first impression of their quiet nice counterpart (Hinata and Minato, respectively) until they got to know and understand each other better, which led to their strong relationships. Both experienced a Love Epiphany towards their quiet nice counterpart, who they recognize is their One True Love. Tsunade even points out that Naruto has far more similarities to Kushina than to Minato in Chapter 367, a sentiment that both Kushina and Minato agree with in Chapters 498 and 645, respectively.
    • In the same way Naruto has subtle physical aspects of his mother, he also has some personality quirks from his father, namely his awkward side and Nice Guy nature.
    • A lot of the events that happen in Naruto's life are similar to those that happened in Minato's. The most notable being that a lot of Minato and Kushina's romance is echoed by that of Naruto and Hinata's, including the two couples falling in love the same way: Rescue Romance, with the Red String of Fate being utilized in both rescue scenarios.
  • Lima Syndrome: Learning about the circumstances surrounding the Nine-Tails being sealed inside him helped him realize he's not the only one who's suffering because of the Jinchūriki system, which allows him to feel sympathy for the Nine-Tails.
Naruto: "Hey! You know what, Nine-Tails?" (smiles) "I believe that I'm going to come after all that hate that's inside of you too someday."
(the Nine-Tails just stares at him in shock)
Naruto: "You've made me miserable my whole life. But I know just how bad it is to be at the mercy of your hatred and to feel ruled by it."
  • Lineage Comes from the Father: Played With. There's no doubt that his father Minato was a powerful ninja and Naruto gained some of his abilities from him. However, his mother Kushina was from the Uzumaki clan, which gifted Naruto with extraordinary life force and stamina.
  • Living Battery: To the point where he can supercharge the entire alliance with their own Super Modes.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: His determination and spirit throughout his life were also the reasons Hinata never gave up on herself. Unaware to her, it goes both ways, with Naruto also relying on her at several points.
  • Living Legend: By the time of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto himself is not only a legend in Konoha but is even known to shinobi from other villages. It becomes even more prevalent after the war, where his status as the hero of the war goes on to encompass the entire continent, possibly the entire world — everyone knows who he is.
  • Living Weapon: Although he was first introduced as a living prison, Minato later outright stated he was made a Jinchūriki for the purpose of combating The Masked Man.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: So often it's not a surprise he appears to be a complete idiot. The Nine-Tails sealed inside him, the identity of his parents, the Fourth Shinobi World War... It's a very long list. His Leeroy Jenkins tendencies may in part be due to the fact that hardly anybody is willing to tell him much of anything, for various reasons. The combination of how people tend to get snarky with their alienization of him, his resulting desire to prove himself to them, and his teenage immaturity tends to cause him to be too emotional and causes others to fear the worst. Beautifully Lampshaded during the Chunin Exams:
Shikamaru: "Ughh. That Naruto is completely out of the loop."
Chōji: "He's so far out of the loop he doesn't even know there is a loop."
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: He was a loner in the years before the series began. In fact, part of the reason why Naruto and Sasuke became friends is because both of them understood what it was like to be truly alone.
  • Longing Look: He gives a rather incredible one to Hinata in The Last — his eyes shine in a way that makes it look as if he's seeing her, really seeing her, for the very first time.
  • Look What I Can Do Now!: Naruto uses this as his quasi-standard way to progress. In fact, he does it in the first episode/volume when he first busts out what will later become his signature move.
  • Love Confession: In The Last, Naruto confesses his love to Hinata twice, after he realizes he's in love with her. The first one didn't go so well thanks to Toneri, but the second one ends with Hinata crying Tears of Joy and The Big Damn Kiss.
  • Love Floats: In the final scene of The Last, he and Hinata have The Big Damn Kiss while floating in mid-air.
  • Love Hurts: His platonic love for Sasuke has torn him apart ever since he defected. His one-sided shallow crush on Sakura didn't give him anything nicer either, and it led to their definitive Ship Sinking in the Five Kage Summit arc, where he outright rejects her fake love confession in Chapter 469 and renews his promise to bring Sasuke back not for her anymore, but for his own reasons in Chapter 470. The poor guy can't even be relaxed in a mutual romance when he confesses his love to Hinata in The Last—he gets coldly "rejected" and finds out she's getting married to Toneri, which leads him to get a Heroic BSoD for four days—three of which he spends in an Angst Coma—until his friends snap him out of it. Fortunately he gets to Earn His Happy Ending with all of the listed above.
  • Love Martyr: Counts as a platonic example for Sasuke.
  • Love Revelation Epiphany: In The Last, Naruto realizes the true nature of Hinata's feelings for him, and his own for her, after witnessing her feelings for him firsthand when they were trapped in a genjutsu that makes them relive their memories. Considering Kakashi stated in Chapter 314 that Naruto is a kinesthetic learner (I.E., a direct learner, someone who learns with his body or by doing, just like his father Minato), this actually makes sense—Naruto needed to physically walk through his and Hinata's merged memories to finally understand both her feelings and his own.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: His Version 2 fox cloak, which is capable of grotesquely contorting his body to nightmarish extents, as seen during his fights with Orochimaru and Pain.
  • Loved I Not Honor More: The great demands and responsibilities that comes with being the Hokage has left him with little personal time for his family, who is equally important to him.
  • Loving a Shadow: His feelings for Sakura never actually went deeper than wanting to win her over to beat out Sasuke at something for once, which was implied in Chapter 3. However, after Naruto finally achieved his lifelong dream of being acknowledged by all of Konoha upon him defeating Pain, and when Sakura gave her fake love confession in Chapter 469, he rejected her outright and finally ended his one-sided shallow crush on her by telling her that he hates people who lie to themselves. This, along with the events of The Last, make it patently clear that his crush on her was legitimately just that: a passing crush and nothing more; it was never romantic love. In comparison, the genuine romantic feelings he has for Hinata are sincere and real, as he fell in love with the person rather than the idea of winning someone over by beating out someone else.
    • Case in point: In the second flashback of the prologue to The Last, when Iruka tells his students to write down the name of the person they want to spend their last day with, Naruto tells Sakura that he'd protect her, which she predictably rebuffs because she's focused on Sasuke. However, when Naruto actually thinks to himself, he admits that he doesn't have family or friends, and he's unable to write down a name. Despite his previous statement, Naruto does not think to write Sakura's name, even though he's supposed to have a crush on her in his childhood. This is an understated yet telling scene that demonstrates that his passing crush on her was non-existent and not serious.
  • Lucky Seven: Being part of Team 7, the manga has 700 chapters, has seven Shippuden movies, and becomes the seventh Hokage in the epilogue. His future wife Hinata also confessed her love to him in Chapter 437 (4+3=7) and their romance unfolds during the seventh Shippuden movie, culminating in The Big Damn Kiss that signifies the start of their relationship.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father:
    • His dad is the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. Not that it wasn't incredibly obvious all along.
    • His spiritual 'dad' is the Sage of Six Paths as he is the reincarnation of one of his sons. This also makes him Sasuke's spiritual brother, which may have been foreshadowed by him referring to his relationship with Sasuke as 'like having a brother' during their fight in Part I.

    M-P
  • Magma Man: Naruto gains Lava Release from Son Goku, which he uses to create a Lava Release Rasenshuriken.
  • Magnetic Hero: This has been one of Naruto's most consistent and defining traits, tracing back to Land of Waves arc. Naruto is capable of influencing friends and enemies alike and even boosting the morale of his comrades by his presence. Several characters like Konohamaru, Hinata, Neji, and Gaara have all adopted his nindō.
  • Magnetism Manipulation: He gains Magnet Release from Shukaku and uses it form a Magnet Release Rasengan.
  • Manly Tears: He does this a few times from Part II onward.
    • First when he thinks Gaara dies.
    • Second after Jiraiya dies.
    • Third when he meets his long-dead father, and later mother, in his mind.
    • Fourth was done via Tears of Joy after he learns that he didn't kill Hinata or the rest of the villagers when he was under the control of the Nine-Tails.
    • The fifth occurred in the novelization of The Last, after Sakura's pep-talk regarding Hinata's love for him. He cries as he thinks about how he had truly fallen in love with, confessed his love to, and was unexpectedly "rejected" by Hinata, and has a hard time finding his strength because her "rejection" hurt him so badly that he hit rock-bottom.
  • Married to the Job: Naruto is so busy with his job as Hokage that he employs shadow clones (which has now become his way of trying to still be with his family) to multitask everywhere, even helping out with groceries at a supermarket! However, he spends more time at work than he does with his family, so his relationship with them, particularly Boruto, suffers, though Hinata, possibly Himawari and eventually Boruto understand that he does not like to be this and that he does value his time with them just as much as with his job. He does still try his hardest to find a way to balance his work time with his actual non-clone time with his family.
  • Martial Arts Staff: In Six Paths Sage Mode, Naruto's weapon of choice through the Truth Seeking Balls appears to be a staff, which makes sense when one remembers he is based on Son Goku and the fact that every person who's used Truth Seeking Balls has had a staff.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The name "Naruto" is short for "narutomaki", a type of spikey starburst-shaped fish cake ramen topping with a pink spiral design in the middle.
    • His family name "Uzumaki" can either mean "whirlpool" or "maelstrom".
    • His full name is also a reference to the Naruto whirlpools (鳴門の渦潮, Naruto no uzushio), named after the city in the Tokushima Prefecture in Japan.
  • Men Can't Keep House: Naruto is not very good at housekeeping. Sometimes his home is all clean and tidy; other times it's a borderline case of Trash of the Titans with empty ramen cups and dirty clothes strewn across the floor and even laundry hanging from the ceiling. Most of the time, however, it's somewhere in between the two.
  • Mental World: Naruto's inner world, where the Fox was caged, initially appeared as a flooded sewer-like complex.
  • Mentor's New Hope: Jiraiya considers training Naruto the one thing he definitely got right in his life.
  • Messianic Archetype: Let's count his Messiah credentials... He is The Chosen One by prophecy. He has a number of devoted followers. He's persecuted for most of his early life for being a Jinchūriki. He's technically dead with Kurama extracted from him and is about to be revived to save the world and most especially he is the reincarnation of the youngest son of the Sage of Six Paths, AKA the God of Shinobi, who was chosen as the Sage's successor.
  • Military Maverick: Naruto has a reputation as this, due to his overwhelming desire to follow his heart and do what he know in heart is right, which includes protecting those he loves and eventually people in general, no matter the rules, orders, expectations, situation or circumstances that advises otherwise, they can be damned for all he cared so long as he can live with no regrets. In fact, this mentality is how he had become so successful as a ninja in ways many others had failed, especially when it comes to saving lives. This is especially shown in the Fourth Shinobi World War.
  • Mindlink Mates: With Hinata in Chapter 677. When Hinata gets caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, she mentally calls out to Naruto in despair. Naruto hears her and immediately tries to rush to her aid.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: When Shin uses his Mangekyo Sharingan to impale Naruto with Sasuke's katana, Kurama accuses him of overreacting and then calls him pathetic for having not dodged it entirely.
  • Minor Living Alone: As long as he can remember, Naruto has been living by himself.
  • Mirror Character:
    • Naruto often muses on how he could have turned into a hate-filled Ax-Crazy psychopath just bad as Part I Gaara and Sasuke had Iruka not spoken up in his defense against Mizuki, which forms the core of his empathy towards them as well as his desire to help them overcome their darkness. He confronts the manifestation of his suppressed rage and hatred towards Konoha and defeats it by accepting it as a part of himself.
    • A recurring plotline in the Filler is Naruto running into someone who is ostracized and treated like a monster - like Isaribi in the Kaima Capture Mission arc - empathizing with them due to his own experiences, and helping them find acceptance.
  • Misery Builds Character: Naruto's horrible childhood is what causes him to be so empathetic to the pains of others. However, it's noted several times that if wasn't for the kindness he received from Iruka and other close friends that he would have become a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Courtesy of All the Other Reindeer and the rumors about him becoming a demon going on a rampage against the village.
  • Momma's Boy: Naruto never knew a mother's love, but got some idea of it when he bonded with Tsunade. He finally met his mother Kushina when her sealed spirit came to help him tame the Nine-Tails and while he didn't recognize her at first, upon finding out, he quickly turned on the water works and cuddled his mother's spirit. This loving care helped Naruto to finally control the Nine-Tails.
  • Morality Chain: To Sasuke. He states he must kill Naruto because he is the last person he cares about, implying he can't become a Shadow Dictator while still attached to him.
  • Morality Pet:
    • In a way, Naruto has become this to Sai. This would explain why the latter is so openly distrustful towards Sasuke.
    • He also becomes this to Kurama as they become friends.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: In his Version 2 Charka Cloak his mouth is unnaturally wide and lined with jagged teeth... and he can make it even wider.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Lots of Shirtless Scenes in Part II. He spent whole arcs shirtless under oil- and waterfalls.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: His Version 1 and Version 2 chakra shrouds can form multiple arms to attack opponents. After taking control of the fox's power he summon many Chakra arms, each with a Rasengan on it..
  • My Greatest Failure: Not being able to save either Sasuke or Gaara comes off as this, especially in the scene where he thinks he is useless for not being able to save either, especially seeing at it is his first major mission after three years training to defeat the Akatsuki and bring Sasuke back.
  • Mythical Motifs: Of the kitsune, since he's the living vessel of the nine-tailed fox.
  • Naughty Is Good: His debut scene involves him pulling an elaborate prank involving Face Doodling on the statues of the Hokage.
  • Nice Guy: Thanks to Character Development, Naruto matures into this from being a Jerk with a Heart of Gold as stated below in his Took a Level in Idealism section. He's a cheerful, friendly, sociable, playful, but understanding person who likes making people feel good about themselves, and has helped many people open their eyes and value life. Even after his incredibly lonely and painful past, he never gave up his kindness for anyone, especially towards the very few people who were always nice to him. Also, see his All-Loving Hero section above.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He is personally thanked by Madara for stripping Obito of the tailed beasts, thus weakening him enough to regain control over him and bring about the evil Uchiha's revival.
  • The Nicknamer: He often gives people nicknames based on some aspects of their personalities or appearances, either as insults, Affectionate Nicknames, or both, and often refers to them exclusively as such. To give a short list, Rock Lee is "Bushy Brow," Jiraiya is "Pervy Sage," Killer B is "Shades-Wearing Pops" or "Octopops," and Tsunade is "Grandma Tsunade" or simply "Grandma."
  • No Hero to His Valet: All of his friends refuse to treat him any different even after he became a hero to Konoha and (eventually) the world at large, aside from some good-natured ribbing. Most of all was Hinata, who never once saw the hero Naruto became, but rather the flawed, but nonetheless good-natured boy who refused to give up even when the entire world was against him and thinking only the worst of him—the boy she fell in love with. Naruto realizing this in The Last is one of the reasons why he marries her in the end.
  • Nom de Mom: His last name comes from his mother Kushina Uzumaki in order to hide his ties with his father Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: Delivered one when he fought Gaara.
Naruto: "It's almost unbearable, isn't it? The feeling of being all alone. I know that feeling; I've been there in that dark and lonely place, but now there are others... other people who mean a lot to me. I care more about them than I do myself, and I won't let anyone hurt them. That's why I won't ever give up. I will stop you even if I have to kill you!"
Gaara: "But why... why would you do this for anyone but yourself?"
Naruto: "Because they saved me from myself. They rescued me from my loneliness; they were the first to accept me for who I am. They're my friends."
  • No-Respect Guy: Early on in the series, he was being disrespected, ignored and mocked by nearly everyone in the village, to the point where people even talked behind his back. Even though it did get a lot better as the series progressed and even after people started being nicer to him, his friends—particularly Tsunderes like Ino and especially Sakura—still made disrespectful, condescending, and/or judgmental remarks about his attributes, and they still made him the butt of their jokes, even more so in Filler. The only person who always treats him with the utmost respect and kindness is his future wife Hinata.
  • No Social Skills: Especially in Part I, Naruto has no understanding on how to address people. To show how much he lacks in social graces, he doesn't know that inviting Hinata up to his apartment to share some cup-ramen with him in The Last is highly inappropriate behavior.
  • Not Good with Rejection: In The Last, he crosses the Despair Event Horizon after getting rejected by Hinata (actually a ruse so that she could save her younger sister Hanabi), as bad as calling out her name in a delirious state for three days. Later when he comes around, Shikamaru and Sai point out this flaw to him. Then he spends a whole day and night curled up in a Troubled Fetal Position and comes very close to giving up on everything. It's not shocking, considering his Backstory and his history with Sasuke.
  • Oblivious to Love:
    • Naruto never actually picked up on Hinata being in love with him until she told him in Chapter 437, despite everyone else seeing it; rather, he thought she was just being Hinata. When he actually found out after she confessed, he was very surprised. Deconstructed and somewhat Justified as we delve into the how and why of this. Naruto wasn't raised by a loving family and was something of a pariah, scorned by nearly the entire village. He does love people and does his best to show it, but not having grown up in a stable and loving environment means that he can't tell familial love or even the love for ramen from romantic love. Furthermore, the various parental figures in his life were single for most of their lives (Iruka, Kakashi, Jiraiya) so it wasn't like they could help. The only one could've been the Third Hokage, but his wife was dead by the start of the series and he dies in the middle of Part I, so he didn't have anyone to talk to about love.
    • Subverted in The Last, where he finally realizes that Hinata loves him in that way and also realizes that he's in love with her as well. Ironically, it's Hinata that's oblivious to his very obvious feelings until he spits it out...but then she "rejects" him and goes with Toneri in order to save Hanabi, and Naruto does not take this well at all. Then, when he makes his Heroic Vow to save Hinata from Toneri and properly return her love for him, he explicitly says, "You always loved me for the way I am" (or "You've loved someone like me forever and ever," depending on the translation), which confirms that he's insecure around her because he never thought someone like her would genuinely love him for him. Because this fits well with Kiba's comment about Naruto "acting tough" in front of Hinata in Chapter 611—which Naruto did not deny nor poke fun at—and Sakura's knowing smile as she says, "So you finally get it", when he kept calling out Hinata's name in a delirious state for three days after she "rejected" him, it's heavily implied that Naruto has been in love with Hinata for a while, but his deep-seated insecurities more than likely played a factor in his obliviousness. Things finally work out at the end of the movie, where Hinata wholeheartedly accepts Naruto's proposal and they become an Official Couple.
  • Odd Friendship:
    • Naruto and Shikamaru. On the surface, they seem to have nothing in common, with Naruto being the Hot-Blooded Idiot Hero and Shikamaru being The Smart Guy yet Brilliant, but Lazy, but they have a strong friendship that is one of Naruto's few normal ones. Bonus points for the fact that even in their Academy days, although Naruto didn't consider him one of his True Companions back then, Shikamaru was one of the few people in their age group (the others being Kiba and Choji) whom Naruto seemed to get along with well enough to actually spend time in his company (although that was only shown in filler, not in canon). Not quite friendship then (more like friendly acquaintance), but it forms a basis for one when the series began and they (along with the rest of the Konoha 11) gradually become Fire-Forged Friends.
    • Short-lived though it was, the relationship between Naruto and Sasuke was one of the oddest friendships in the series. At the time, Sasuke was a quiet, moody prodigy who was ridiculously popular despite wanting to be left alone, while Naruto was a loud, obnoxious idiot who was shunned despite wanting friends more than anything else. Not to mention that they started out hating each other, their first real interaction as classmates being a fight, and they desperately wanted to fight each other before and after they became teammates. Despite all this, for a brief time in the series they had a very strong friendship marked by mutual respect and trust. This bond was, in fact, so strong that Naruto insists that Sasuke is still his best friend despite Sasuke trying to kill him on three separate occasions.
      • There was a brief and unspoken moment of understanding back in their Academy days however; a few days after Sasuke lost his clan, Naruto found him near a pond and Naruto wanted to talk to him. Both looked at one another and said nothing, but there was an unspoken bond. Naruto himself confessed that he actually wanted to befriend Sasuke, but it ended up to where he viewed him as his rival. Naruto does reflect on how things would be different had he approached Sasuke like a friend in the first place.
  • Official Couple: Finally becomes a couple with Hinata in The Last. At the end of the movie and from the manga's epilogue onward, they are Happily Married with a son and a daughter.
  • Older and Wiser: He is this as an adult, especially when it comes to his duties as Hokage and eventually his son.
  • One Head Taller: By the time of The Last, he's grown to be one head taller than his One True Love Hinata.
  • One-Man Army: He is The Cavalry by the time the Fourth Shinobi World War comes.
Naruto: "I'm going to hit all the battle fronts at the same time and turn the tide!"
  • Only Mostly Dead: After Kurama is extracted from him, Naruto's body starts shutting down. Sakura runs out of chakra trying to heal him and when his heart stops she is forced to manually pump it while giving him mouth-to-mouth to keep him alive.
  • One True Love: Naruto has spent almost his entire life searching for the one person who would love him unconditionally, in spite of everything that has and will transpire in his life, along with all of his flaws, like his parents would have if they lived beyond his birth. However, since he never understood the romantic implications of such a relationship, he's been blind to the fact that the person he's been searching for has been right in front of him all this time: Hinata, the girl who has admired, acknowledged and loved him for the way he is since the day they first met as children. It takes him until The Last to finally realize that Hinata is the precious person he wants to protect and be with. Confirmed by Kishimoto in the aforementioned 2015 New York Comic Con interview:
Masashi Kishimoto: I think what made me realize it was partly because, if you really look back and think about it, Hinata always supported and acknowledged Naruto, even before Master Iruka. She had the ability to see beyond his reputation and see the true person inside. I think I started realizing that they were meant to be.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Naruto is cheerful and carefree even when the situation doesn't really call for levity. So, when he loses his upbeat attitude, it's a sign that something is very wrong.
    • After learning about Jiraiya's death, Naruto didn't shout, cry or throw a tantrum; he just turned around, gave Tsunade some biting parting words and walked away. He's so quiet and subdued that Iruka immediately understands something is wrong. Shikamaru is also alarmed after seeing him in such a state. Both of them try to help him get through this.
    • In The Last, Shikamaru attempts to break him out of his Heroic BSoD by telling him that since he gave up on Hinata so easily, he might as well give up on becoming Hokage. Naruto responds by grabbing his friend from the collar and angrily asking him if he's looking for a fight. Shikamaru realizes the situation is worse than he thought.
    • In Boruto, Delta attacks him when he’s out with his kids and Kawaki. When she targets his daughter to get an opening, he gets homicidally enraged.
  • Opposites Attract: Hinata is a shy Proper Lady whose fighting style is precise and accurate, and she is in love with the Hot-Blooded boisterous Naruto whose fighting style is unorthodox and full of surprises, and he realizes he's in love with her too. Even more so with their clothing in Part II: Orange and Black for Naruto, Lavender and White for Hinata, like yin and yang, although Naruto is actually the yang (light) to Hinata's yin (dark).
  • Orange/Blue Contrast: In the anime, his chakra is blue, while the Nine-Tails' is orange, turning red-and-black when he uses too much of the Nine-Tails' power. He could originally only draw on the Nine-Tails' chakra with extreme emotion, hence he was much calmer while using his own chakra.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: Kushina's green scarf in The Last. Naruto wearing it unknowingly interfered with Hinata's attempts to confess to and initiate a relationship with him using her red scarf. When Naruto realized this, he took off Kushina's scarf and put it away. He later wholeheartedly accepts Hinata's scarf, even though it was ruined by Toneri out of spite. Doing so ultimately shows that his love for Hinata surpasses his desire to remain attached to his mother.
  • Painful Transformation: His conversion to the four-tailed Jinchūriki state involves his skin getting burned off by the Nine-Tails' chakra, with his blood coating his body along with the chakra field. When Yamato forcibly changes him back, he literally has no skin and screams in agony before passing out.
  • Papa Wolf: After becoming a father himself, Naruto becomes protective of pretty much every child, both in his village and beyond it. This can be seen in Naruto Gaiden—when he realizes that Shin Sr. is using his clones (who refer to him as their father) as human shields, he's noticeably upset yet contained.
    • He goes all out and reacts with shock and fury when his own children are directly threatened. This is seen when Momoshiki attacks Boruto and when Delta attacks Himawari.
  • The Paragon: He seems to specialize in taking evil, psychotic, apathetic, or otherwise less-than-heroic characters and talking to them and/or beating them up until they decide to become heroes like Naruto. The only person who seems immune to it is Sasuke. Well, at least until their Final Battle.
  • Parental Hypocrisy: He scolds his son, Boruto, for defacing the Hokage monument when he himself did the same thing at that age. Then again, it was an important day. He also notes Konohamaru's hypocrisy in scolding him, seeing as Konohamaru did very much the same thing with his grandfather.
  • Parental Substitute:
    • Takes on this approach in a way to Sarada Uchiha since she never really saw her father. Not only does he save her, he also tells her more about her father then her own mother and offers to let her meet him. Sarada respects him for that and clearly enjoys his presence, Naruto later manages to get her out of her depression stemming from issues of her own family, by giving her a talk on what family really means. Post Gaiden arc, Sarada looks up to him greatly as a whole, even wanting to become the next Hokage.
    • Naruto would later adopt Kawaki, the future antagonist in the Boruto story. After Team Konohamaru found Kawaki and took him to the Leaf Village infirmary, Naruto decides to take Kawaki under his wing. Naruto then hugs Kawaki after seeing him have a panic attack by a troubled flashback, trying to calm him down and letting him know he's safe. From then on, Kawaki would be considered a new member of Naruto's family.
  • Parents as People: While Naruto is a deeply devoted father and husband, his busy schedule as the Hokage has made his family feel neglected and has even caused tension between his and Boruto's relationship. This comes to a head when Naruto sends a Shadow Clone to his daughter's birthday party, leading Boruto to wish that he never had a father in the first place. Their relationship smooths out considerably after the Momoshiki incident, but some of the resentment is still there.
  • Personality Powers:
    • Shadow Clones. The first technique learned by Naruto, who was always alone, was a technique to create more people, companions. As Sasuke so accurately stated, the Shadow Clone technique, a technique which creates multiple copies of oneself, is the perfect channel for Naruto's loneliness.
    • The Rasengan later as well. As Naruto gets stronger and makes more friends, he creates unique versions of it in battle. The Rasengan represents Naruto's versatility and creativeness that he obtains as the series goes on.
    • Sage Mode would be his growing sense of patience and focus as he becomes one with Nature, along with gaining a greater appreciation for it and life in general. This is also where he starts gaining Asura's ability to make new allies in the truest sense. Also a tribute to his fallen master, Jiraiya.
    • Nine-Tails Chakra/Kurama Mode would be his growth as a Jinchūriki, his growing connection with Kurama and his bright personality.
    • Sage Nine-Tails Chakra/Kurama Mode would have to be a representation of proven that he is more than just a Jinchūriki, also a being of Nature.
    • Six Path Sage Mode would be the ultimate representation of his senjutsu power as a sage and his tailed beast powers as the perfect Jinchūriki of the tailed beasts, plus his status as a reincarnation of Asura.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Like all Tailed Beasts and their hosts, Naruto is often described in a way analogous to a nuclear weapon.
  • Physical God: After his meeting with Hagoromo, he acquires the powers of Six Paths Chakra, and the chakra of all nine Tailed Beasts. The former allows him to enter a godly transformation called Six Paths Sage Mode, which amplifies all of his abilities to their absolute peak, and the latter grants him all of their elemental releases. It more or less cementing Naruto's status as this. In Shikamaru Hiden, Shikamaru of all people is the one to compare Naruto to a god. However, after losing Kurama in Boruto he's stated to have lost his superhuman chakra reserves and Tailed Beast powers.
Shikamaru: "He's practically a psuedo-Ten Tails Jinchūriki... his power is that of the Six Paths. At his current level, Naruto is pretty much a god."
  • Playing with Fire: Creates a Fire Style: Rasenshuriken using Matatabi's power.
  • Power Floats: After gaining the powers of Asura, it's revealed that Naruto can fly.
  • Power Limiter: Orochimaru placed a Five-Pronged Seal (Five Element Seal) on him during the "Forest of Death" part early in the Chunin Exams. According to Jiraiya, this interfered with the Eight Sign Seal (Eight Trigrams Seal) confining the Nine-Tails, thereby preventing the fox's chakra from merging with the boy's; it also made Naruto's own chakra very difficult to control. That means that Naruto made it into the Final Round with practically both hands tied behind his back.
  • Power of Trust: He and Hinata have placed a great amount of trust in each other since the Chunin Exams arc.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: Naruto's chakra shroud has a mind of its own, and can launch its own attacks separate from his own.
  • Power Up Full Color Change: His whole body turns gold/yellow with black markings here and there when using all of the Nine-Tails' chakra.
  • Power-Upgrading Deformation: The more of the Fox's chakra Naruto channels in Version 1, the more bestial his own appearance becomes, with his eyes turning red with slitted pupils, his teeth sharpening and lengthening into fangs, his fingernails growing into claws, and his lips turning black.
  • The Prankster: When he was younger, his favorite hobby was pulling pranks.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: "You give up... on me giving up!"
  • Pregnancy Does Not Work That Way: Naruto was born the day of the Demon Fox attack. But at the time of the sealing, he is shown without an umbilical stump. That usually doesn't happen until ten days after birth.
  • Pretty Boy: He bears a striking resemblance to his father, although his eyes and face are shaped like his mother's. Not that that's a bad thing:
Naruto: (to Kushina) "If I got my good looks from you, that just means I'm handsome, right?"
  • Prison Dimension: During chapter 77 of the Boruto manga Kawaki performs a Divine Technique on him and Hinata that traps them in a dimension where time is frozen.

    R-S
  • Rags to Royalty: Naruto is a mix between the Cinderella and the Sleeping Beauty types. First he starts as an outcast orphan who was regarded as a no-good troublemaker without a future. Then he slowly grows up into a respectable and eventually idolized figure as his achievements grow. Then it is revealed that not only was his late father the Fourth Hokage, but that his late mother's family was also related to the Senju, making him also related to the First, Second AND Fifth Hokage. In layman's terms, he has the blood of FOUR of the ninja equivalent of kings in his veins. But of course, none of this is actually addressed by anyone in the manga.
    • Then again, his relation to the Senju clan is incredibly distant. It isn't as distant as his mother's connection was, considering Mito Uzumaki married the First Hokage and is Tsunade's grandmother.
    • In The Last and the epilogue of the manga, he got Happily Married to Hinata, the eldest heiress of the Hyuga clan and the Byakugan Princess, so he married into royalty. Also in the epilogue, he becomes Hokage himself, further cementing his place in this trope.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: One of his favorite hobbies is gardening. No, really.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: By the time of Naruto Gaiden, he has grown impressively into his role as the Hokage. His interactions with all the characters, but especially Sarada, show that he fully understands the gravity of his position. He is intelligent and composed during the entire miniseries, and it exemplifies just how drastic his Character Development has been.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Although it's more like "the reason you're wrong" instead of "the reason you suck," he'll often deliver this to his foes in order to shatter their ideology and pull them from the darkness in less than a minute.
    • During the Land of Waves arc, he calls out Zabuza for his indifference to Gato's desecration of Haku's body, tearfully recanting what Haku had told him about how much he cared for Zabuza and the fact that he had just sacrificed his life to save him. Zabuza is genuinely moved to tears and proceeds to kill Gato himself.
    • Naruto delivered this to Obito for not only being a hypocrite, but also disappointing Rin in the afterlife and letting go of his real personality for trying to hide his true feeling. Obito, now more torn than ever before, ultimately admits that he's right and began to atone for his sins afterwards.
  • Rebellious Spirit: Naruto hated the fact that his village ignored him. So what does he do? Defy all the rules and uses his ninja skills to play pranks on unsuspecting villagers/ninja (including the Hokage), his worst prank being when he defiled the somewhat sacred Hokage monument. Of course he got more heroic as the series went on, but he still has a problem with authority, preferring to do things his own way instead of listening to his superiors. Considering his early experiences with adults, he can't really be blamed.
  • Red Baron: Naruto gains a number of impressive nicknames due to his heroic actions.
    • "The Knucklehead Ninja".
    • "Child of the Prophecy".
    • "Saviour of the World".
    • "Hero of the Hidden Leaf".
    • "Boy of Miracles".
    • "The Orange Hokage".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When using the Nine-Tails' power and Dark!Naruto.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Hot-Blooded, brightly colored Red to Sasuke's stoic, dark colored Blue.
  • Red String of Fate: Over the course of The Last, Hinata knits three red scarves to give to him and they are used as a symbolic representation of the trope name. It also serves as a Call-Back and Meaningful Echo to the story of how Minato and Kushina fell in love, indicating that his fate is tied to Hinata's in the same way.
  • The Redeemer: Naruto has an uncanny ability to make friends and redeem others. Gaara began as an Ax-Crazy villain who committed murder as a matter of course, but Naruto's influence helped change him for the better and reconsider his philosophy. In the end, he's even able to redeem Sasuke despite the rest of Konoha and the Ninja World at large considering him Beyond Redemption.
  • Refuge in Audacity: In the battle against what is practically the God of Ninjutsu, Naruto decides that it's good time to pull out his new technique: the Sexy Reverse Harem no Jutsu. While we'll never know if it worked as intended or if the enemy in question was so unbelievably confused that their brain shut off for a moment, it worked and gave Naruto a much-needed opening to attack them.
  • Reincarnation: Naruto has Asura's chakra reincarnated into him. It's indicated that this means they still have separate souls, Naruto comparing it to having a ghost possessing him, Asura's chakra clinging to generation after generation of incarnations through history due to the unending rivalry between him and Indra and their unwillingness to concede to each other (in turn also influencing the behavior of the people the chakra incarnates into). The cycle of incarnations at last ends when Naruto and Sasuke make peace with each other, signified by the statues of the previous incarnations (Hashirama and Madara) crumbling and their hands uniting.
  • Relative Button: Do not badmouth Sasuke or suggest he's too far gone for help. Naruto shares this specific button with Sakura.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel: Initially, Naruto uses Shadow Clones in order to be able to gather Natural Energy for him and then dispelling them when he needs to recharge. But, after becoming a perfect Jinchūriki by making peace with Kurama, he can indefinitely maintain his Sage Mode by having Kurama gather Sage Chakra for him.
  • Repetitive Name: While Naruto was named for 'Narutomaki', the fishcake in ramen, when written with different characters, 'Naruto', like his surname "Uzumaki", means "Maelstrom", as in a whirlpool.
  • Rescue Romance: Much like his mother before her, Hinata fell in love with Naruto when he protected her from three bullies when they were kids, as revealed in The Last. This gets a painful Meaningful Echo during the Invasion of Pain arc, where she jumps in to protect him from the titular antagonist and suffers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, driving Naruto to an Unstoppable Rage. During The Last, Naruto again rescues Hinata (this time from Toneri), and after the Final Battle, the two finally begin their relationship.
  • The Resenter: Initially. He spent the early part of the series jealous of the attention and praise that Sasuke always received.
  • Revealing Skill: After gaining Asura's powers, Naruto gains this weakness in his Shadow Clone technique. While all of them are still functionally identical, the real Naruto has the truth-seeking orbs floating behind him. However, he can move the truth-seeking orbs near any clone within the orbs' range.
  • Running on All Fours: Naruto each time the Tailed Beast cloak appears.
  • Sad Clown: He only pulled immature pranks in his village to escape the loneliness.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Gender-inverted with Hinata. He's a boastful Keet while she's a quiet Shrinking Violet.
  • Say My Name: SASUKEEEEEEEEEEEE!
    • He gets another name in the Invasion of Pain arc and The Last that gives the aforementioned one a run for its money: HINATAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Naruto sports two as an adult in The Last. The first was the green one knitted by his late mother Kushina. The second was the red one given to him by his main love interest Hinata, and it helped him finally defeat Toneri.
  • Scary Flashlight Face: Pulls it off several times in Episode 101 of the original anime, (the "what's under Kakashi's mask?" episode). Each time earns him a good thwack upside the head from Sakura.
  • Screaming Warrior: Especially as a kid where he would charge and attack his opponents. This becomes one of his more signature tics as he unleashes a roar due to having a Hot-Blooded personality.
  • Screw Destiny: What he tells Neji after he defeats him in the Chunin Exams, and pretty much anyone else who views him as a hopeless cause destined for failure.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Naruto has little respect for rules on a good day, and when those rules become a hindrance he ignores them entirely.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: He's the aforementioned Person, with a nine-tailed fox sealed within him.
  • Secret Legacy: He is this to his father Minato, the Fourth Hokage.
  • Secret Test of Character: Kurama puts him through one, wanting to see if the boy really means what he said about helping the fox overcome its hatred and befriending the Tailed Beasts. When Naruto frees Son Goku, Kurama offers him its full power, no strings attached.
  • Self-Duplication: Shadow Clone (Kage Bunshinn no) Jutsu, his first high level technique and signature move. He can use it to do a Doppelgänger Attack in battle, or Me's a Crowd in comedic situations. He gets more inventive with it over time.
    • His secondary Signature Move, Rasengan, also uses clones to divide up the tasks of making the ball. He uses two Naruto's for the standard version, and ups it to three when he adds Elemental Powers to make Rasenshuriken.
    • He can also use clones as Leaked Experience, since the memories and experiences of the clones transfer to the original when they disappear. This makes things like learning through repetition, and analyzing new foes with feints, go thousands of times faster.
    • And it also allows him have a clone off site meditating into Sage Mode, so original can activate it at will.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Sasuke's Manly Man. Naruto is more cheerful, one of his hobbies is watering plants, and he develops into an All-Loving Hero. Conversely, Sasuke hardly lets anyone into how he really feels, and has a real ego at times and develops into a Byronic Hero.
  • Sensor Character: In Sage Mode, he can sense chakra around himself to a large degree. When he entered Sage Mode while on the Island Turtle, he instantly was able to feel all the chakra around and confirm there was a war taking place.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: His Rasenshuriken.
  • Shared Family Quirks: According to Tsunade in Chapter 367, although Naruto inherited his hair color from his father Minato, his personality, favorite food, Verbal Tic, unconventional battle-tactics, and love of pulling pranks all come from his mother Kushina. Kushina herself points out that Naruto is more like her than Minato in Chapter 498, and Minato takes note of the many similarities between Naruto and Kushina in Chapter 645.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • One reason why Naruto wants to bring Sasuke back is because he knows Sakura loves Sasuke and wants him to return home. Naruto also gives the two of them a genuinely warm smile in Chapter 699, when Sasuke apologizes to Sakura for everything that he put her through.
    • Judging by his teasing, Naruto also thinks Shikamaru and Temari would be a good couple together.
  • Shonen Hair: Spiky blond hair for a Shonen protagonist.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Instead of Talking the Monster to Death like he usually does, when Black Zetsu shouts at him that he is only a part of the ninja history he created in order to revive his "mother", Naruto grabs him, shouts back that he didn't create the story of shinobi and that a brat still clinging to his mother's side doesn't have the right to compare himself to the countless shinobi who shaped history with their lives, before throwing him at the Chibaku Tensei, sealing him away with Kaguya for the rest of eternity.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: In Episode 12 of the Boruto anime, when Boruto and Mitsuki talk about Naruto, Boruto says "Kaa-chan ni deredere shite", which is properly translated to "He's lovestruck towards Mom"Explanation . This is one of the reasons why Boruto views him as a Bumbling Dad. In subsequent episodes, we do see Naruto and Hinata acting like this towards each other — in Episode 18, Naruto lovingly recalls taking Hinata to Ichiraku Ramen on their first date, and in Episode 127, Hinata lovingly recalls how much she's admired Naruto since they were children.
  • Signature Move:
    • Shadow Clone Jutsu, the first high-level technique he ever mastered and became the basis for his whole fighting style. Even his proper signature attack Rasengan once required and then just usually involved the use of clones.
    • Rasengan, an extremely versatile jutsu he can combine with sage mode and elemental manipulation.
    • Wind Style: Rasenshuriken, an S-class ninjutsu only he can perform. He can eventually form the Rasenshuriken with all types of elemental releases.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Gender Inverted with his future wife Hinata. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 has a sidequest where Naruto makes the "Ultimate Decision" between innocent girls like Hinata or brisk girls like Sakura and Ino. The innocent girl choice is described as what Naruto really likes, while the brisk girl choice is described as the safe option so that Sakura and Ino wouldn't get mad. This fits well with canon: One of the reasons why Naruto develops a strong friendship with Hinata that grows into love is because out of all his friends, she always treats him with respect and kindness. In Chapter 77, when Hinata gives Naruto her ointment, he thanks her and points out that she's "far too kind." This scene even gets a meaningful Call-Back in The Last. Finally, in his Image Song for The Last—which is a response to Hinata's Image Song—Naruto states that while he didn't notice the depths of Hinata's feelings for him during the main series, he points out that she's always regarded him with "overflowing kindness."
  • Sins of Our Fathers: A common theory as to why Naruto's heritage was kept a secret from the public, including he himself, was that his parents' enemies would seek to kill him in their place should they learn of his existence. This was confirmed to be true, though which enemies were never elaborated on. Eventually, however, the secret is blown wide open during the Fourth Shinobi World War, but by that point the villages had united and been working together through some truly terrible ordeals that bonded them to such an extent that nobody cared.
  • Skilled, but Naive: While quite strong, he's incredibly naive about the way the world works, and his desires to prevent anyone else from dying and to unite the entire ninja would be completely impossible if not for Writer on Board.
  • Snow Means Love:
    • Defied and Subverted with Naruto and Sakura in the Five Kage Summit arc. Sakura spends all of Chapter 469 trying to convince Naruto that she loves him and that she loves Sasuke no more, claiming that she now loves him for the hero he's become after he defeated Pain rather than the "mischievous, prankster loser" that he always was and always will be, all in a snowfield with the snow falling softly. Then on the very last panel of that chapter, Naruto rejects her outright by telling her that he hates people who lie to themselves. The text on that panel even Lampshades it: "In the falling snow..." The following chapter has Sakura arguing with Naruto because she wants him to stop chasing after Sasuke and hurting himself to keep his promise to her, but Naruto tells her that his promise was no longer the reason why he wants to save Sasuke; he has his own reasons now. Finally, in Chapter 474, Naruto reveals to Sai that he could tell she was lying because he knew she only loves Sasuke.
    • Played Straight with Naruto and Hinata in The Last. They met on a snowy day when they were children before they enrolled in the Academy, he confesses his love to her and later proposes to her during the present-day wintertime, The Big Damn Kiss takes place in the snowy sky, and The Stinger shows them playing in the snow with their two children.
  • Spanner in the Works: To the point where Tobi actually calls him out on this trope.
  • Spectacular Spinning: His Signature Move, the Rasengan, and all its variants. The tenth anniversary game one-ups this by making an "Instant awesome, just add dragons" version! His name even shares a similar theme!note
  • Spirited Competitor: He was willing to pick a fight with his rival every chance he could get.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Downplayed with Hinata in The Last. After Naruto realizes he's in love with her, he is twice shown following her at night when they're on the moon. First was when he notices her walking through the forest and he realizes that she was making the red scarf for him. Second was when he stands by a tree and she is sitting on a rock near a lake, still knitting away at the scarf, after she spent the whole day not talking to him (because she was thinking about her vision in the ruins and was also depressed about Hanabi). However, his love for her is genuine and he is very clearly shown to truly care about her, which is in stark contrast to Toneri's lustful over-obsessive crush on her. This is ironic since Hinata herself was a Downplayed version of this trope towards Naruto in Part I before she completely dropped this behavior in Part II.
  • Stealth Mentor: In a strange way, Naruto was this to Itachi. Naruto declaring how he made it as far as he did with the help of his comrades and friends makes Itachi realize what true strength means, and how wrong he was to rely only on himself. His speech to Naruto about a belief only in yourself makes you arrogant and leads to failure? That was Itachi describing himself and his own failure.
  • Stepford Smiler: Naruto will tend to mask his pain with a smile, such as when he promises Sakura to bring back Sasuke for her before and after the retrieval mission. Before the Chunin Exam finals, he privately admitted to Hinata that he viewed himself as a loser and tried to act cool and brash to cope with this. In Part II, Pain put him on the ropes by breaking him down with words, getting him to second guess his own actions. The Waterfall of Truth reveals that beneath he's been masking sixteen years worth of hatred and resentment towards Konoha behind that cheerful goofy smile.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: One of the most well-known examples in the 2000s and The New '10s. He even has orange as a trademark color much like Goku. He starts out as a hyperactive, twelve year old ninja with heavy Idiot Hero qualities. He has spiky Shonen Hair and can eat a lot. Despite his negative traits, he's quite caring, is exceedingly determined, dedicated to his friends, and ends up very powerful by the end of the series. He's also extremely Hot-Blooded.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Played With. He looks very similar to his father Minato that to the point that it was a Captain Obvious Reveal when his parentage was revealed, but he actually has a face more like his mother Kushina. He grows out of looking like Minato by the time he is an adult, which is evident in The Last, where a 19-year-old Naruto shows more resemblance towards Kushina. His own son Boruto is quite like Naruto in appearance but is again not entirely identical, as he has the rounder facial features that belong to his mother Hinata.
  • Strong and Skilled: At the end of his story he becomes this. Mastering various techniques and utilizing the Rasenshuriken into different elements and mastering his overwhelming power from Kurama, he and Sasuke become the strongest ninja in the entire world.
  • Stunned Silence: Happens thrice, all in regards to Hinata.
  • Summon Magic: Frogs and toads.
  • Super-Empowering: Naruto is able to transfer his and Kurama's chakra to others, granting them tailless version 1-like chakra shrouds that greatly enhance their techniques: Hinata, for example, is able to deflect one of the Ten-Tails' tails with a single Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm. Kakashi states that the power and volume of the transferred chakra is even greater than when Kurama earlier directly handed chakra to him, which had improved his Kamui at least three-fold. Despite Kurama's contribution, C claims the transferred chakra more closely resembles Naruto's own. Naruto can also independently control the shrouds to protect allies from attacks they couldn't otherwise defend against.
  • Super Mode: Sage Mode and later stages of using the Nine-Tails' chakra.
  • Super Powerful Genetics: He may not have any of the flashy Bloodline Limits the series is known for, but that doesn't mean he was born without perks: As an Uzumaki, he has a supernaturally large chakra pool, a faster healing rate than normal and near endless stamina.
  • Superpower Lottery: Naruto has managed win the lottery multiple times, having mastered Sage Mode, which allows him to fight on par with other powerful shinobi like Pain. Being the host to the strongest Tailed Beast in the world, the Nine-Tailed Fox, acting as his Superpowered Evil Side that tears up parts of the landscape once triggered, but at the cost of shortening his lifespan. Once tamed, there are no more Power at a Price aspects. Naruto won over his fellow Perfect Jinchuriki Killer Bee though: being stronger, faster, and overall more powerful than five Tailed Beasts. Not only that, he can transfer his power to an entire army to make a Redshirt Army into a Badass Army capable of fighting even the strongest Eldritch Abomination in the universe and two physical gods. And then he can combine his full power with his Sage Mode which gives him the ability to fight even the likes of Ten-Tails Obito! And when he received Six Paths Chakra from Hagoromo Otsutsuki, his Six Paths Sage Mode has his abilities skyrocket to their full potential, allowing him to battle the likes of Ten-Tails Madara, Kaguya, and Sasuke.
  • Super Special Move: Naruto has multiple stronger variants of his Signature Move, the "Rasengan". Examples include "Big Ball Rasengan, which is literally just a bigger, stronger Rasengan. But more varied twists include techniques like "Rasenshuriken", a projectile variant that grants Naruto greater range, power, and has the added benefit of sharp edges that can cut through hard surfaces.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Any chakra cloak tail form past two qualifies, as he starts acting more on instinct.
  • Super-Speed: After gaining access to his first version of his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, his top speed surpasses that of the Fourth Raikage, making Naruto the Fastest Thing Alive, another thing he inherited from his father. Even in just his regular Sage mode, his reflexes proved sufficient to dodge the assault from the Edo Tensei Third Raikage.
  • Supporting Protagonist: This is Naruto's current role in Boruto, since his story is already over at the end of Shippuden, especially after the events of The Last and The Day Naruto Became Hokage.
  • Surrounded by Smart People: Naruto frequently finds himself this, as hardly anybody truly let's him forget it, especially in his own group.
  • Surpassed the Teacher:
    • He perfected sage mode, which Jiraiya wasn't able to do.
    • He also surpassed Kakashi, because the latter wasn't able to add element manipulation to the Rasengan—which is why Kakashi made Chidori. Even the Fourth Hokage had been unable to add his elemental manipulation to the Rasengan.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In The Last, after he realizes he's in love with Hinata, he lets out this gem:
Naruto: I'm not just being kind because I'm in love with you or anything! I'm just really worried about Hanabi, that's all.
  • Sweet Tooth: According to the databooks, one of his favorite foods is oshiruko (red bean soup); coincidentally, this is also the kind that Hinata likes as well.
  • Swirling Dust: Exaggerated with Naruto's fourth level of Demonic Possession; it flattens a metal bridge and a square mile of a forest as a side effect of his raging, corrupted chakra.
  • Swiss-Army Superpower: Naruto's Shadow Clone Jutsu. The standard ability is it allows Naruto to create physical clones of himself. These clones can act as human shields, speed up his training, allows him to spam multiple Rasengan, and can be combined with his taijutsu techniques.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Naruto loathes Obito for his Straw Nihilist views. Yet as he works to finally separate Obito from the tailed beasts, all of the Uchiha's emotions and memories come flooding in with them. Naruto experiences visions of the Uchiha's past, his dreams of becoming Hokage, and his mourning Rin's death. He is genuinely moved to tears over Obito's loss.

    T-Y
  • Take a Third Option: This trope more or less defines Naruto, especially in that the 'choice' is typically, "Abandon your morals to succeed or be a failure for keeping them".
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Naruto convinces Gaara, Pain and Konan to pull a Heel–Face Turn with words, and later tries to do the same to Obito as well, and attempts this multiple times with Sasuke. He eventually convinced both of them to commit a Heel–Face Turn as well. Critics cynically refer to this as "Talk no Jutsu".
  • The Tease: Sexy Jutsu turns him into a naked female version of himself.
  • Technicolor Ninja: Despite the Orange, Naruto has shown a great proficiency for stealth when he cares about using it. Not that stealth has ever been necessary for anyone in the series.
  • Terror Hero: After the Fourth Shinobi World War, the name "Naruto Uzumaki" is well known in the ninja world, with many considering him invincible. When the Armament Alliance takes over the Tobishachimaru in Kakashi Hiden, one of their terms is that if Naruto Uzumaki or anything even vaguely resembling Naruto Uzumaki appears in the horizon, they'll blow up the airship and kill all the hostages.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare:
    • He has these after he finds out that Jiraiya is dead.
    • He also has these in The Last after Hinata "rejects" his Love Confession, Toneri drains his chakra, and he falls towards Earth as he watches Hinata drift away from him while she's in Toneri's arms.
  • Throat Light: Gets a white one when using the Nine-Tails' power in the anime.
  • Through His Stomach: In Episode 159 of the original anime, he eats one of Hinata's rice balls and compliments her by telling her that she would make a great wife. In Episode 12 of the Boruto anime, where he and Hinata have been Happily Married for over a decade, he makes it clear that he prefers her home cooking rather than the cup noodles he's been eating at work lately. In Chapter 26 of the Boruto manga, he boasts to Kawaki that Hinata's cooking is delicious, and tells him to look forward to it.
  • Time to Unlock More True Potential: Every time Naruto learns a new skill, it's quickly rendered insufficient and it's back to training. Rinse and repeat.
  • Tiny Schoolboy: He starts out as the Attention Whore type in the beginning of the series, and is the shortest not only in his team, but also to the rest of his friends, but he grows out of it (literally and metaphorically) when he gets older.
  • To Be a Master: He doesn't just want to be the Hokage. He wants to be the greatest Hokage, better than all before him. He succeeds.
  • Together in Death: Or rather together exiting the story with Hinata, during chapter 77 of the Boruto manga where Kawaki performs a Divine Technique on them and traps them in a dimension where time is frozen.
  • Too Dumb to Fool: He passes the first round of the Chunin Exams by not being smart enough to realize that you are expected to cheat and are really being evaluated on your ability to do so. As a result, he doesn't answer a single question which, since he was never actually caught cheating, means he loses no points from his total and passes.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Several times. Achieving Sage mode and harnessing the Nine-Tails chakra are the most notable occasions. His progress before the Time Skip is practically nothing by comparison. To basically sum it up: he has the full cooperation and power of the most powerful tailed beast short of the original, Sage Mode which gives him Super-Strength and toughness outside of that, the ability to power-up anyone he touches, and has chakra so incredibly strong it can be felt all the way to Konoha. Plus, he can combine said Tailed Beast's power with Sage Mode to become even more powerful. If it weren't for his current opponents, this would be a clear case of Story-Breaker Power. After being revealed as revealed as the reincarnation of one of the Sage's sons, he gains the ability to use the Sage's senjutsu abilities.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: Naruto starts off as a very selfish jerk, but his traumatic experiences actually motivated him to become a better person and a more respectable ninja. Throughout Naruto he has a habit of inspiring this in any villain that turns out to be a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.
  • Trademark Favorite Food:
    • He absolutely adores ramen and all of its various flavors; it's pretty much the only thing he really eats. If Shippuden ending 34 is any indicator, it's probably the first hot meal he ever had, on top of probably being the first act of kindness he received. This was confirmed in Konoha Hiden.
    • To a lesser extent, Naruto also likes sea salt ice cream which started when he was training with Jiraiya and continued with Iruka.
  • Tragic Keepsake: He receives his mother's green scarf in The Last. He later casts it aside in favor of Hinata's red scarf as part of his Character Development.
  • Training from Hell: His training to learn the Rasenshuriken involved using a jillion shadow clones to master his chakra control. He fainted more than a couple of times.
  • Trauma Conga Line:
    • He was a life long outcast who never knew his parents at the beginning, who gave their lives to save him when both his life and the lives of their hometown came under grave threats only an hour after his birth at best, before being told exactly why in a very brutal manner. Most of his peers treat him like trash—and, unbeknownst to him, the one girl who always treats him with kindness is too shy to get remotely close to him for many years—and he has to fight for every bit of respect he can. Not too much later, the closest thing to a grandfather and only family member he has dies, swiftly followed by his best friend's betrayal and attempt to kill him. He then spends three years away from his friends for the sole purpose of bringing back said best friend. When he gets back, one of them dies for a little while—thankfully, he got better. Then, he once again meets said traitorous friend, who once again attempts to kill him. Some time later, a third retrieval mission fails.
    • Now, here's where it really starts. In rapid succession, his beloved mentor/father figure dies, his village is destroyed, another of his mentors is killed, and then he is Forced to Watch his future wife Hinata sincerely declare her love for him—the first time he ever heard anybody say that to him genuinely—and then get stabbed. Thankfully, the one who did this managed to undo all the damage he did thank to Naruto's Talk-No-Jutsu, but this is the closest he came to losing everything. Then his hopes of bringing his best friend back are shattered by revelation after revelation, with one of these being a rather painfully fake love confession to get him to abandon his quest. And all these revelations come right after the shocking explanation as to why said traitorous friend is now out to kill pretty much everyone and everything, including him. And let's not even get started on how many times he's been Locked Out of the Loop and how people still tend to be judgmental of him, despite him being on his way to becoming one of the greatest ninja ever.
  • Twice Shy: In The Last, when Naruto realizes he and Hinata are in love with each other, he begins to act quite bashful and nervous around her, and he even gives her an awkward Love Confession.
  • Übermensch: In-Universe. Since the first arc he has stated that he rejects the ordinary ninja way and will follow his own. It's constantly reaffirmed throughout the series.
  • The Unchosen One: Despite being The Chosen One in the main series, he is this in The Last. He stumbled across Toneri's plan via saving Hinata from being abducted by being at the right place at the right time and his love for Hinata become the driving force of his involvement. His assistance is instrumental to Hinata destroying the Tenseigan Core orb and Toneri's defeat. It also goes both ways, though, as Hinata did her fair share of being this to him in the main series, being there for him during some of his most important battles, such as against Neji, Pain, and Obito.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Naruto is frequently given this treatment by others, especially in Part I. Justified given his prankster status in the Academy and not taking his studies there seriously. Eventually, first with his defeat of Pain and then during the Fourth Shinobi World War, they all realize that Naruto can back up his loud mouth talk.
  • Undying Loyalty:
    • Despite how far Sasuke has fallen, Naruto refuses to give up hope that he can be saved, though he is nonetheless resolved to fight and kill Sasuke if there's no other way.
    • This is a major part of Naruto's character. If someone become a friend of his, Naruto will be obsessed in rescuing them. As shown in the Kazekage rescue arc, he did everything to save Gaara. When he realized that Gaara died and Deidara got away, Naruto was so enraged that he turned into his two-tailed state. And the last time he met Gaara face to face, was Gaara trying to murder him, Sasuke, and Sakura.
    • It is especially shown in the Invasion of Pain arc. It was an arc of Pain pushing nearly every last one of Naruto's buttons. He killed Jiraiya, bombed Konoha, killed Kakashi, and nearly killed Hinata. Naruto in the end refuses to kill Nagato. He's loyal enough to Jiraiya that he refuses to trample on Jiraiya's beliefs, even if he has some trouble believing them himself.
  • Unknowingly in Love: Played with. Naruto himself spends the majority of the series unaware of the nature of romantic love and how it is any different from the kind of 'love' one would have for a favorite treat (which he understands due to how much he loves to eat his favorite food ramen). It ultimately isn't until he's finally become fully accepted by his village and later learned the true nature of romantic love over the course of his adventures in The Last: Naruto the Movie that he fully understands and realizes the nature of Hinata's love for him and how he himself has in fact been in love with her without even realizing at first.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With his future wife Hinata, beginning in the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc and continuing on into The Last. Judging by the dialogue from the other characters, such as Kiba and Sakura, this has actually been going on for much longer than that — and as confirmed in The Last, where Naruto specifically remembers Hinata giving him her ointment in Chapter 77, this has been going on since the Chunin Exams arc in Part I. If one were to read/watch the entire series all over again, there are hints of this lingering throughout the entire narrative, pushed to the background as camaraderie and friendship were in the forefront. Naruto's No Social Skills and Oblivious to Love statuses meant he never realized that a lot of his interactions with Hinata did have underlying romantic tension, primarily because he's never understood romantic love due to his emotionally-stunted and lonely childhood and not having anyone to teach him the differences between The Four Loves.
  • Unskilled, but Strong:
    • Ebisu points out that he and Sasuke are this way in chakra control compared to Sakura. Sakura has by far the least chakra of the three, but the ability to use it the best. Naruto and Sasuke have far more chakra, but end up spending far more of it on their jutsu, to lesser effect, because of their control issues.
    • Jiraiya describes him as this during the Chunin Exams. Thanks to his high levels of Chakra, Naruto doesn't need to worry about the fine control his peers do and can more readily rely on raw power ninjutsu. This is played in contrast to Neji's Weak, but Skilled. Later, shadow clone training helps convert raw power into skill, but he's still prone to muscle his way through jutsu that require loose chakra control. At least until he learns Sage Mode, which is enough to fight Pain on equal terms using an energy even more difficult than Chakra.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Usually after one of his friends gets hurt.
    • In Part I when he believed Sasuke had been killed. Also during his fight with the latter he enters into a berserk like state with his Nine Tail Cloak.
    • Part II: Against Orochimaru when he acts as if he owns Sasuke and when Pain seemingly kills Hinata.
    • (After befriending Kurama:) After Obito kills thousands more shinobi that Naruto was actively protecting and nearly kills Shikamaru, Naruto's rage brings tears to his eyes and he is even able to damage Obito in his Gudodama sphere! Later, when Black Zetsu mocks Obito's death after he has redeemed himself, Naruto responds by ripping Black Zetsu...and Kaguya's arm off Kaguya's body and hitting Kaguya with all nine Tailed Beasts' power.
  • Use Your Head: When all else fails, an old-fashioned headbutt does the trick. One time he even used it as a Dynamic Entry on Tobi.
  • Verbal Tic:
    • "Dattebayo/Believe It!" He uses it as a comma, for gods sake. "The sky's blue, Believe It!" Curiously, when the English dub has to acknowledge his verbal tic once more, in Storm 3 for instance, it's translated instead as "Ya know?"
    • He has a childish tendency to repeat certain phrases, like: "And! And!", "But! But!", "Hey! Hey!" and so on. Like "dattebayo" (or simply "ttebayo") mentioned above, it's dismissed in the English dub. Generally, the dub refines Naruto's speech patterns but adds in the Keet department, evening things out.
  • Vibrant Orange: Actually an Invoked Trope; Naruto grew up hated and ignored by the other villagers for being the human vessel of the demon fox. His pranks and even the color of his outfit are deliberate acts to make people take notice of him.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Gender inverted. Naruto becomes very protective to Hinata after he reciprocates her love in The Last. He refuses to let Toneri get more than a few words in before going on the offensive, later telling him that "Hinata has nothing to say to [him]" when the latter comes to talk to her.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds:
    • Back when Sasuke was still with Konoha, Naruto and him were like this, trading insults and each giving as good as they got, yet acknowledging each other as their best friend. They were this once again when Sasuke joins up with him again in the fight against Madara. After Sasuke's permanent Heel–Face Turn they truly go back to this, with Naruto insulting him as they lay bloodied and battered after their last fight. This remains even in adulthood, with Naruto getting comedically angry at Sasuke for insulting him over his performance in their battle with Shin Uchiha Sr.
    • To varying degrees, Naruto has this with some of the Konoha 11, most notably Kiba, Shikamaru, Ino, Shino and Neji. Naruto often makes fun of his friends for their personality quirks, and they make fun of them for his, but they stand together in dangerous times. In a filler arc, the Arc Villain whom Naruto had often talked with reminds him of how he often complained about his friends. Naruto responds that while they do fight, he likes them and trusts them to help stop his Evil Plan. In fact, the only one of Naruto's friends who he completely subverts and averts this is his future wife Hinata, because he's always nice to her whenever they're together and he never once berates her for anything.
  • Warrior Therapist: He's the good kind, but tends to be somewhat crude in his methods. It seems to work well, though — on more than one occasion, he's turned an enemy into an ally by means of a well-timed inspirational speech and a well-placed right hook.
    • He has an even better track record with turning allies of convenience into actual friends through Warrior Therapy. It seems the writers responsible for the Filler plotlines can't do drama without having him doing this.
    • Lampshaded with a conversation between the Sand Siblings at the Kage meet.
Kankuro: It's useless, Gaara, not even Naruto could reach him.
  • Warts and All:
    • By the time of The Last, he's by far and away one of the two greatest shinobi in the world, but he's still Naruto, something even he has grown willing to admit to. And yet, Hinata wouldn't have him any other way, which is one of the reasons why Naruto marries her in the end. Hinata has admired, acknowledged, and loved him for him since the very beginning. Both Naruto's flashback in Chapter 538 and Kishimoto in the aforementioned 2015 New York Comic Con interview confirm that she was the very first person to acknowledge him for who he is, long before Iruka did. She loved him long before he ever became the hero in the public's eyes and she'll love him long after his story fades into legend.
Hinata: You make mistakes... but... because of those mistakes... you get the strength to stand up to them... that's why I think you are truly strong.
    • In comparison, Sakura's fake love confession was filled with admiration for the hero Naruto became, rather than the person he always was and always will be, which is why he was able to easily tell that she was lying, call her out on it, and reject her outright by telling her that he hates people who lie to themselves.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy:
    • A friend/rival variant. Naruto constantly seeks Sasuke's approval.
    • While grieving over Jiraiya's death with Iruka, Naruto confided in his old teacher that Naruto wanted Pervy Sage to continue watching over him, seeing and praising him as a great shinobi and a future Hokage. Naruto also laments that despite him wanting to do this, he always believed he only showed Jiraiya his bad, uncool side.
    • Naruto wanted the approval of Minato and Kushina, his parents. To their credit, they both had a perfectly legitimate reason for not giving their approval sooner.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Sasuke. Big time. Until they beat each other to a pulp and finally have a long talk, becoming friends again. Naruto claims this is a subversion and that he never stopped being Sasuke's friend, but Sasuke disagrees.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: All too happy to be acknowledged by the village after saving the world, Naruto still has a hard time figuring out why Fangirls give him presents and say they love him. His development in The Last is about coming to terms with the concept of romantic love, which is something he has never been able to truly comprehend due to his emotionally-stunted childhood. This development ends up having a tremendous impact on his relationship with Hinata, as when he finally understands what romantic love is, he can't look her in the eye afterwards.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: In Naruto Gaiden, Naruto is disturbed when Orochimaru says Shin's clones are expendable beings once they've outlived their usefulness. He later makes it a point to offer the kids a new home in the Orphanage of Love Kabuto runs, hoping that with time and proper training they will learn to fit in with others.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Naruto has both directed this towards someone else and been on the receiving end of this several times for different reasons.
    • Naruto tried to reason with Sasuke throughout their fight at the Valley of the End in Part I. It didn't work.
    • When Naruto couldn’t save Gaara from the Akatsuki, Naruto tearfully blamed Chiyo and her generation of Sunagakure shinobi for forcing Shukaku inside Gaara as a child, without either consent, or even having a shred of consideration for how Gaara felt or would suffer. This lashing out, along with Chiyo’s own recently found regrets, resolves Chiyo to correct the consequences of her mistake, and sacrifice her own life to bring back Gaara’s.
    • Yamato called out Naruto for nearly killing Sakura twice while he was in his three-tailed and four-tailed states, along with himself for not being more alert of the situation, and told Naruto that if he wished to bring Sasuke back, he should rely on his own power to do so since he's already strong enough to hold back the fox and avoid becoming agitated enough to go into his fox states.
    • Yamato and Kakashi called out Naruto after one of his Leeroy Jenkins moments in the Three Tails arc, saying that it put himself and his comrades in danger, but, for some reason, both conceded that Sakura dropping down on Naruto and punching him into the ground was more effective.
    • Naruto called out Sakura on her fake love confession, which she attempted to do to get him to stop chasing after Sasuke and hurting himself. He easily saw right through her because she wasn't very convincing, he rejected her outright by telling her that he hates people who lie to themselves, and he renewed his promise to save Sasuke not for her anymore, but for his own reasons now.
    • Some of the Konoha 11 berated Naruto for what they viewed as his over-idealistic approach to the hopeless situation with Sasuke.
    • Itachi called out Naruto for letting his insistence on trying to do everything by himself get the better of him. Itachi told him that while he has grown exceptionally stronger, doing so is disrespectful to the people that care about him, and it's egotistical of Naruto to think that he can solve all the world's problems by himself. Later chapters reveal that Itachi did the same thing, which led to Sasuke's Start of Darkness, thus he knows exactly why Naruto shouldn't make this kind of mistake.
    • In The Last, Shikamaru called out Naruto for moping about Hinata's "rejection" and for forgetting about their mission instead of trying to save Hinata, Hanabi, and the world from Toneri.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: If one takes a closer look to the techniques he uses across the series, his arsenal comes down to two techniques: Shadow Clones and Rasengan. He is very creative with them, has developed many variations (mainly with the Rasengan) and they are amplified and/or supported by his various super modes, but his tactics still come down to spamming variants of the two. His only other real technique is Summoning, but he uses it scarcely.
  • When He Smiles: In Chapter 1 of Gaara Hiden, Gaara notices that Naruto has a wondrous smile that is reserved only for Hinata.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: His recent promotion to Hokage has him spending less time with his family than he used to. However, he chooses to manage his son's pranks and gently lecture him about what it means to be Hokage instead of being on time for the Five Kage meeting. In Naruto Gaiden, Naruto reaches a compromise by using his shadow clones to play hide-and-seek with Boruto, which also helps with Boruto's training. However, in Boruto: Naruto the Movie, this serves to make his relationship with Boruto even more complicated, as he starts sending shadow clones to important events such as Himawari's birthday, which really pisses off Boruto and upsets both Hinata and Himawari.
  • Wise Beyond His Years: Don't let his Idiot Hero status fool you. Naruto is quite insightful and uses it to call out others for their Fatal Flaws and/or actions.
  • Worf Had the Flu:
    • In his first battle against Sasuke in the Valley of the End, he had already been chasing the Sound Five for several hours, and fighting them off a couple of times, before he intercepted Sasuke. Sasuke himself was fresh, literally having just awakened from receiving a huge power-up.
    • When he met Sasuke for the first time after the Time Skip, he got his butt kicked because he was still exhausted from fighting Orochimaru in his four-tailed state.
    • By his second battle against Sasuke in the Valley of the End, he had been fighting for almost an entire day more than Sasuke had. Although, by that time, that issue had probably become meaningless to both of them.
    • In The Last, due to having just recovered from a near-fatal chakra drain, Naruto was left temporarily unable to use his Six Paths mode when he fought Toneri. True to form, Naruto manages to win despite this because he still had a great amount of chakra to fall back on and he is a seasoned fighter, having years of battle experience on his side.
    • If Naruto Gaiden is any indicator, Naruto's battle senses have dulled over the past decade due to his position of being Hokage and not consistently training like he did when he was a teenager. Kurama pointed this out during Naruto's battle with Shin and his father and Naruto wholeheartedly agreed, stating that his performance was pathetic.
    • In Boruto, Sasuke says Naruto could easily stop Kinshiki Otsotsuki's ace attack if he wanted, but since there were many people in the immediate area he had no choice but to take it, to the horror of the entire Hidden Leaf.
  • World's Strongest Man: A number of people have attributed this to him. He's been claimed to have surpassed the Fourth several times over and Tobirama directly compares Naruto to Hashirama upon witnessing his mastery of Sage Mode, and later admits that Naruto may eventually become a greater Hokage than his brother was. After obtaining Six Paths Sage Mode, Kakashi states he surpassed all Hokage and is shown briefly matching Kaguya Otsutsuki blow for blow (though it's acknowledged that Kaguya is still far more powerful and was holding back during the fight). He loses at least some of his new powers during his final fight with Sasuke in the Valley of the End (namely losing his Truth Seeking Orbs and the powers granted by the seal in the hand that is destroyed), but even with those losses, by the Distant Finale, he becomes the Seventh Hokage, making him both the strongest Hokage in the Leaf's history, and the single strongest person in the world with only Sasuke being acknowledged as rivaling him in power. Or at least, this is what everyone thought. It turns out there are still beings out there, namely other Otsutsuki, who rival Kaguya in power and thus provide more of a challenge towards Naruto and Sasuke.
  • Would Hit a Girl:
    • Naruto has no problem hitting a girl if she's one of his enemies. This was shown more in the anime Filler.
    • In the Sai and Sasuke arc, when Orochimaru goads him about Sasuke, Naruto gradually grows his tails until he reaches his four-tailed state. In Chapter 292, in his three-tailed state, he accidentally smacks Sakura hard enough that she hits her head and falls unconscious. However, in Chapter 296, in his four-tailed state, he actually sees her running towards him, and yet he smacks her hard again, almost killing her a second time.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: On the other hand, there is one girl whom Naruto subconsciously and consciously never hits: his future wife Hinata.
    • In the Invasion of Pain arc, when he was Forced to Watch Pain stab Hinata, Naruto instantly activates his six-tailed state for the first time ever, mercilessly attacks Pain with everything he has, transforms to his eight-tailed state, and almost releases the Nine-Tails. Throughout that fight with Pain, Naruto manages to not harm Hinata any further or even come close to killing her, despite being in his six-tailed and eight-tailed states. In fact, he attacks Pain from the side to avoid harming her, and then he blasts Pain away from her. Naruto even becomes very worried that he might have killed Hinata when he was under the control of the Nine-Tails, and he cries in relief when he learns that he didn't.
    • In The Last, Toneri forces the brainwashed Hinata to attack Naruto, thinking that Naruto wouldn't be able to fight back because of his love for her. This is true to an extent: Naruto doesn't even try to attack Hinata; he ends up dodging her attacks instead. However, once he realizes that she's been hypnotized by Toneri, Naruto frees Hinata from the mind-control without harming her.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb:
    • Naruto and Sasuke could not be more different if they tried, but if they find themselves united against a common enemy you can bet they're going to win. Taken further into literal usage, Naruto uses much more Yang chakra as compared to Sasuke using Yin chakra, including obtaining the respective halves of Hagoromo's own Six Paths power.
    • He can pull it off by himself in the form of the Six Paths: Ultra-Big Ball Rasenshuriken. One of the shuriken is made entirely of Tailed Beast chakra while the other of Six Paths chakra. When they hit, they create a vortex akin to a black hole.
  • You Remind Me of X: He reminds other characters of certain people quite often. The most commonly mentioned are his father, the Fourth Hokage, as well as his mentor, Jiraiya (with Sakura and Sasuke bearing similarities to Tsunade and Orochimaru, respectively). He also reminds Tsunade of her dead little brother and boyfriend in his goal of becoming Hokage, and while she initially shrugs it off as something that will get him killed, she comes to see him as someone who inherited both their hopes, and gives him the necklace she gave to the two of them shortly before their deaths, with the hope that he will succeed where they failed.
  • Yuri Fan: Shown by Konohamaru's Girl on Girl Jutsu.
