How is Arcane alliterative with "Bigail"?

"I'm Penny Parker. You can remember that 'cause it's got the same letter at the front of each name. That's important theatrically, you know."

In Real Life, an alliterative name is a name in which the first and last names begin with the same sound. In more extreme cases, this can also include the middle name.

Giving a character an alliterative name is one of many ways a writer can make a name more interesting and catchy, which in turn makes the character more memorable to the audience. This is especially important in works with large Ensemble Casts, where extra help is needed to differentiate between them.

In comic books, this is especially true of the names of Super Heroes or their close hangers-on. It was a favorite tool of Stan Lee's, since, swarmed with projects, he often had trouble remembering the characters' names, and the alliteration worked as a mnemonic device. (Though it didn't always work perfectly — Lee occasionally referred to "Peter Palmer" and "Bob Banner".)

Of note to writers: Overusing this trope dilutes its effect, particularly if multiple characters have the same starting letters in their names.

A variation consists of downplaying the alliteration by having a prefix before the surname. Such as "Alice McAllister" or "Bob O'Brien."

In comic books, the Alliterative Name is often also Two First Names. In cartoons, it goes hand-in-hand with Species Surname.

Please note that Japanese names, though many may seem alliterative to an English-speaking audience, may not convey the same "alliterative power" in their original setting; syllables (and vowel sounds) matter more than letters in Japanese.

No Real Life Examples, Please! Even though this is Truth in Television, Real Life examples are much more common than they are in fiction and generally aren't meaningful enough to be added here. On the other hand, real-life examples for Alliterative Families are allowed, as they are much less common.

  • BoBoiBoy has Yaya Yah.
  • The primary antagonist of Happy Heroes Season 8 is named Huo Haha.
  • Noonbory and the Super 7:
    • Babysitterbory and Bakerbory.
    • An interesting example: out of the Super Sensors, only one has their name alliterate with their sense: Totobory, the bory of taste.
  • Pakdam Pakdai has two examples:
    • The main character is named Doggy Don.
    • Nana the Narrator, which is likely an unintentional example.
  • Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf features an alliterative location name. Green Green Grassland repeats the letter "G".

  • Ome Henk: Several characters in this Dutch audioplay series have this kind of name. Examples include: Koos Korswagen, Floris-Jan van Fleppensteyn and Tjabbe Tjibsma.

    Crazily Superb Comic Strips 
  • The Adventures of Prudence Prim: Protagonist Prudence Prim, who has a fling with Will Wildman before marrying a man named Dicky Dare.
  • Arrowhead: Del and Deena Dixon, in the fashion of the superhero genre.
  • Beetle Bailey: The titular character.
  • Blondie (1930): The titular character, Blondie Bumstead.
  • Dilbert: A lot of the oneshot characters have alliterative names that describe their major personality flaws, such as Disgruntled Doug, Jittery Jeff, and Medical Mel.
  • Gasoline Alley: Walt W'allet.
  • A varient in George and Lynne, where the titular couple know an awful lot of couples whose names begin with the same letter — Tim and Tina, Robbie and Ruthie, Bob and Becky...
  • Luann: Avoided for characters in the strip, but this and Rhyming Names gets used for nearly everything else; businesses, places and events all get the treatment. Café TJ, Moony Uni, Quibbling Siblings, Soufflé Lingerié, Kafe Kablooie, Chateau Trio, Fuse Follies... and all these were just since 2014 (the strip was created in 1985.)

  • Retail: Cooper Costello and Stuart Suchet. Marla used to qualify as well until she married and her last name changed from Masters to Garrison.

  • Family Guy Fanon: Meg's friends follow this trope with their new last names. Patty Patterson, Esther Esthederm, Ruth Rutherford and Beth Bethany
  • Yolanda Yop in The Aristocats' Island.
  • In the Pokémon Peggy Sue fic Ashes of the Past, Ash's last opponent in the Silver Conference is Fred Farrell, whose team consists of Floodwater the Feraligatr, Fuchida the Forretress, Flambé the Flareon, Felicity the Flaaffy, and Fowler the Farfetch'd.
  • The Punch-Out!! fan-blog Ask the Ryans gives Aran Ryan's sister (whose name is never mentioned in the games) the name Rory Ryan.
  • Bait and Switch has LtJG. Warragul Wirrpanda, chief medical officer of the USS Bajor. "Shakedown Shenanigans" reveals his middle name is "William".
  • The Black Wrangler's title character is Kaichou Kurosaki. In the original Japanese, it wouldn't count as an example, but this is an English fanfic.
  • but i wrote the words to the swan song: One of Juliet Capulet's aliases is Juliet Jones.
  • In The Flash/Supergirl crossover Call Me Kara, Alexandra Allen, Kara and Barry's daughter.
  • Calvin & Hobbes: The Series:
    • The Monster Maze. Lampshaded by Hobbes:
      "Nice touch."
    • Most of the things that Calvin sells at his stand in "Help Wanted" also count.
  • Snow Storm and Bolt Buck in Cape and Cowl.
  • In Catch Me in Midair Remus is pregnant with Sirius' child and Sirius deliberately suggests names such as "Antigone Artemis Alistronia Agatha" and "Icarus Ieolus Ilarion Izydorak."

  • The Duskyverse has the original characters Dusky Down, her parents Windy Ward and Splendid Speech, and mayor Prideful Policy.
  • Ed, Edd, Eddy n Edna: Edna's full name is Edna Esmeralda Espinoza.
  • Enchanted Miracle Pretty Cure has Cure Chameleon, whose real first name is Camilo.

  • Oversaturated World: Oversaturation: Whinneapolis has a "Fair Food Fair", a fair about fair food.
  • Pickles and Depredation: Protagonist Raozya's full name is Rozza Reyo Raozya.

  • Tales of the Hunger Games has a couple among the OC Victors and tributes (both focus and non-focus) including Jason Jennings, Linnet Laurier, Lavender LeBlanc, Sandy Sellick, Delphine Dubois, Victoreen Vattenfall, Pixel Plummer, Link Larson, Broda Bernhardt, and Dina Dalton.
  • Tales of the Otherverse: In the "A New Generation" story arc, Cora Zir-El goes by the assumed name Katrine Kent.
  • The SuperStarr Chronicles gives the obscure Marvel superheroine Star Sign, who first appeared in Avengers: The Initiative #18 (August 2008), the birth name Lisa Leialoha. She was never given a birth name in the comics. Her surname is also an additional Shout-Out to Native Hawaiian comic artist Steve Leialoha.
  • The Twilight Child has Twilight Twinkle, and her great-grandmother, who is also called Twilight Twinkle (she was named after her).
  • Vale's Underground: In addition to the canon examples from RWBY (see those below), there are:
    • the original characters:

      • Harvey Hart.
    • Glynda's Adaptation Name Change doesn't affect her status as this since her surname was changed from "Goodwitch" to "Goodridge."
    • Cinder's real name, Kenna Carter, counts phonetically.
  • Frozen fanfic What About Witch Queen? has three cases:
  • Viridian: The Green Guide: Izuku is nicknamed the Green Guide by the Pro Heroes who know him.
  • In With this Ring... (Green Lantern), Hector Hammond names his current super-villain team the "Triumvirate of Terror", although the name fails to terrify — or impress — Hal Jordan.
    Hector Hammond: "Now, Green Lantern, be sure to tell your fellow Corpsmen on the other side that the last foes you fought were known, collectively, as the Triumvirate of Terror."

  • In Silent Trio 4: Harry and the Return of Sirius Black Harry, his friends and their guardians start an anti-Voldemort organization called the Order of V. Everyone takes turns suggesting what the V could stand for before Luna goes to town with it.

  • An American Tail: Tony Toponi, which doubles as a Bilingual Bonus name, meaning "Tony mouse" in Italian.
  • Barry B. Benson from Bee Movie.
  • Big Hero 6 has Hiro Hamada, which was changed from Hiro Takachiho.

  • Prince John in Robin Hood (1973) is apparently fond of alliterative nicknames. He creates at least five of them for Sir Hiss ("silly serpent", "reluctant reptile", "cowardly cobra", "aggravating asp" and "procrastinating python") and has one for Friar Tuck ("corpulent cleric").
  • Sing has Nana Noodleman (and yes, Nana is her name).
  • Treasure Planet: Dr. Delbert Doppler.
  • Turning Red: Miriam Mendelsohn.
  • Roger Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
  • Wreck-It Ralph has Wreck-It Ralph, Fix-It Felix Jr. and King Candy.note  Felix is the only one with the same letters, but all three manage an alliterative sound.

  • Billy Bragg: He used to be known as Steve Bragg, but William was his middle name and he decided Billy was a better name for a singer.
  • The lead singer of Breaking Benjamin, Benjamin Burnley.
  • Two Dark Angel vocalists: Don Doty and Ron Rinehart.
  • Mike Mangini of Dream Theater.
  • Eminem, whose real name is "Marshall Mathers" and the origin of the "Eminem" moniker. While he didn't pick it, since he often likes to imagine himself as a comic book superhero (a type of character that frequently has alliterative names), it suits him well.
  • Pale Saints drummer Chris Cooper.
  • Suede: "Metal Mickey" and Bernard Butler.
  • Sufjan Stevens.
  • Main vocalist of the kpop band BTS, Jeon Jungkook. Als the band's other names such as "Bulletproof Boyscouts" and "Bangtan Boys" also fit this.
  • The Argentine rapper Nicki Nicole.

    Mysterious Myths & Remarkable Religion 
  • In Norse Mythology, Loki is generally referred to as "Loki Laufeyjarson." This is interesting because Laufey was the name of his mother, while his father was called Fárbauti. Most scholars assume that the Norse poets gave him a matronymic simply for the alliteration, as pretty much every other character uses their father's name. This actually makes some sense in the context of modern Icelandic use of the naming convention, the parents will usually go with whichever of their names sounds better when paired with -son and -dottir, so alliteration is likely a perfectly valid reason for Loki to be referred to that way, assuming the tradition held from an older one.

    Proud Pinballs 
  • Played with: No Good Gofers has two characters named Bud and Buzz.
  • Gottlieb's Tee'd Off has Gunther Gophernote 
  • The pop bumpers in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Data East), according to a flyer, are called "Bronco Bumpers".
  • In addition to the name of White Water itself, many of the in-game locations have alliterative names, such as Disaster Drop, Boomerang Bend, and Wet Willie's River Ranch.

    Playful Podcasts 
  • Trials & Trebuchets has alliterative names in droves. This includes the four Player Characters: Serinepth Sinderman, Winsler Wallaby, Integrity Idleberry, and Mira Marchand, as well as several NPCs such as Artis Artisian, Aira Allaro, and Bailey Blue, among others.

    Pretty Sweet Puppet Shows 
  • Played with in The Magic House. While some characters, like PC Pot and Kitty Kettle, have alliterative names, others, like Uncle Teapot and Grandpa Clock, do not.
  • The Muppet Show: The Great Gonzo (but is usually just called "Gonzo").
    • Rizzo the Rat, who doesn't appear in the series proper, but later appears in some of the movies and TV specials.
  • Oobi: Frieda the Foot.
  • Sesame Street: Big Bird.
    • And Baby Bear.
    • The human character Mr. Hooper was eventually revealed to have the first name "Harold" and "H" as a middle initial.

    Radical Roleplay 
  • Dawn of a New Age: Oldport Blues features multiple characters with alliterative names, such as Edward Eisen, Finn Flannagan, Jae Jung, and Sebastian Smith, which fits with the overall comic-book inspiration of the roleplay. Sebastian notes that while his name isn't particularly fancy, it does sound good for an aspiring author.
  • In DC: United We Stand, in addition to the canon characters with alliterative names, we also have Detective Warren White.
  • The League of Intergalactic Cosmic Champions has Rocket Ranger, Crimson Crossbow, Tammy Tembar...
  • Survival of the Fittest has this in SPADES: Aiden Ambrose, Waldo Woodrow, Paris Persphone, Adam Amato, Andi Ayala, Brendan Bedard, Christian Cohen, Debrah and Deliah Dollop, Wade Wilson (not THAT Wade Wilson, Nicholas Nutbrown, Mary McKay, Denise Dupuis, Branca "IT'S A STEAK" Braunstein, Jessica Jones, Bobby Barron, Jonathan Jarocki, Christoper Carlson (a self-insert of Cody Cromarty, his handler), Mike Maszer, Mike Moretti, Gary Griffith, Joss "Jojo" Joiner, Carla Conners, Frankie Fiametta, and Miranda Merchant.

    Sensational Sports 
  • The Red Baron titles given to boxers in promotional materials for their matches usually apply this trope - for instance, Jack Dempsey was also known as the Manassa Mauler, while Chuck Wepner, whose fight with Muhammad Ali inspired the first Rocky movie, had the comparatively less intimidating moniker of "The Bayonne Bleeder".
  • Formula One has Thai-British driver Alex Ansusinha, professionally known as Alexander Albon, born with the name Alexander Albon Ansusinha.
  • There are plenty of sports clubs that have an alliterative name, way more than to even give an even remotely extensive list. Just some examples:

  • Sentinels of the Multiverse, being inspired by superhero comics, has its share of these, both in civilian identities and in codenames.
    • America's Finest Legacy is Paul Parsons VIII (yes, the eighth). His daughter Pauline Parsons prefers to go by her middle name of Felicia, but then adopts the civilian alias of Felicia Fields (since the Parsons family's connection to the Legacy line is public knowledge, and by this time, she's taken up the mantle as America's Newest Legacy).
    • The Wraith is Maia Montgomery.
    • Anthony Drake is the Argent Adept, Virtuoso of the Void. The Virtuosos are a long line of magical musicians, and they have all had alliterative titles.

    • Portja Kir-Pro is Sky-Scraper.
    • On the villainous side of things, Ivan Ramonat is Baron Blade.
    • Minor villain Heartbreaker is Tony Taurus.
    • Sergeant Steel's real name is Jack Steel. His subordinate, Becky Blast, also qualifies.
    • The identity of Glamour has been held by a few different characters throughout Sentinel Comics' fictional history, and no fewer than three of them qualify:
      • The first one was Madame Marjorie Mittermeier, creator of Madame Mittermeier's Fantastical Festival of Conundrums and Curiosities.
      • The second one came about because a writer needed to use Glamour's real name for something, couldn't remember it, and was unwilling or unable to look it up. "Well, it's something with M's... Melissa... Morris... yeah, that's it!" The Sentinel Comics editors didn't catch the mistake until it was too late to do anything about it, and eventually decided that Madame Mittermeier was still around and allowing Melissa Morris to use the name for whatever reason.
      • When Melissa Morris was found murdered in the 1980s, it was unclear for a while who was using the Glamour name now. The answer was eventually revealed to be Aislin Allen, who had been the hero The Shrieker for a brief time in the '50s (in fact, part of the original Freedom Four/Freedom Five) before being basically forgotten when that team fell apart.
    • Other alliteratively named characters or groups include Professor Pollution, the Green Grosser, the Crackjaw Crew, and the Southwest Sentinels.

  • Atop the Fourth Wall: Linkara discussed this trope when he reviewed Action Comics #252, and he noticed that it also applies to him as well, since his real name is Lewis Lovhaug.
  • The Debbie and Carrie Show: The restaurant the Tuscany Tavern, which was a major hub of activity for the Central Characters.
  • Exploited in Demo Reel, as Donnie Dupre is the fake name of Jimmy Boyd, a Former Child Star who was so abused by Horrible Hollywood he felt the need to create a new identity.
  • The Guild: Vork's real name is Herman Holden. There's also Wade Wei in season 2.
  • The nicknames for crafts in Life Hacks For Kids can sometimes have these. For example, "Fabulous Fan Tent".
  • lonelygirl15: Whatever Lucy's last name is, it begins with the letter L. Jonas apparently knows her full name, as he is able to find her apartment by looking for someone with same-lettered initials.
  • A few meme characters like Scumbag Steve, Bad-Luck Brian, Good-Guy Greg, and the Foul-Bachelor Frog.
  • In Noob, Fantöm's real name is Max Middle.
  • YouTube Creator Welker Farms has a giant tractor called Big Bud. They have an attachment they use to build and move grain bins on their Montana Farm. The call the complete machine Bob's Big Bud Bin Boom.
  • The YouTuber, Summoning Salt.
