- Chekhov's Gun: A surprisingly dark example for an otherwise lighthearted movie. Throughout the story Darius steadfastly refuses to have anything to do with Coach Marcus. It seems like it has something to do with his coaching style. However Coach Phil later reveals that Darius received his Traumatic Brain Injury by being hit by a drunk driver and wants nothing to do with a man who was forced into coaching because he got a DUI. It’s only after he realizes that Marcus genuinely cares about the team that he agrees to play.
- Down to the Last Play: subverted and played with. Johnny executes a perfect pick and roll and has an easy layup for the win. But passes it off to Showtime who attempts his from behind granny shot he never makes. However it looks like it’s going to go in, only to fall away. The Friends don’t care and are thrilled that he finally hit the rim!
- Foreign Remake: Based on the Spanish film Champions.
