East Blue Pirate Crews

Pirate crews that the Straw Hats encounter in the East Blue.

Buggy Pirates

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Bagy_7151.jpg

The crew of the (in)famous Buggy the Clown, the Buggy pirates are a gang of low-level pirates with a circus theme. The most notable members are Mohji the Tamer & the First Mate, Cabaji the Acrobat & Second Mate, and Richie, a huge lion who serves as Mohji's pet. After a confrontation with the future Straw Hat Pirates that saw Buggy separated from his crew, they are later joined by Alvida, the pirate that Monkey D. Luffy fought against on his voyage, in time to intercept the Straw Hats in Loguetown before embarking on their own voyage to the Grand Line. Although powerful, for an East Blue crew, they are in reality nowhere near as strong as they are feared.

After the Paramount War and Buggy's evasion from Impel Down then his ascension to the rank of Warlord, the crew now hosts several powerful criminals from Impel Down who were freed by Buggy, including Galdino who once worked in Baroque Works. Furthermore, they now operate a successful underworld mercenary business known as Buggy's Delivery.

  • Aerith and Bob: In the crew there are uncommon names like Cabaji and Galdino and common ones like Richie and Buggy.
  • Affably Evil: They're all a bunch of happy-go-lucky pirates... as long as you're their friend.
  • Arms Dealer: Buggy has an interest to take part in the underworld's arms racket in light of Donquixote Doflamingo's defeat, but with the New Giant Warrior Pirates splitting off and the end of the Warlord system, it's uncertain how, if at all, those plans will move forward.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: When Buggy goes missing, Mohji and Cabaji fight to decide who will be the new captain. Richie defeats both while sleepwalking and becomes the captain for a short while.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Due to Buggy's screwy style, their love for partying and having a good time and the crew's overall circus theme, they don't look as threatening as other more serious crews. Despite this, Buggy and his crew are still strong enough to make it to a high-ranking position and Buggy himself becomes one of the Seven Warlords.
  • Circus of Fear: Following Buggy's clown motif, many of the crewmembers are based off typical circus folk.
  • Devious Daggers: Many crew members use daggers, like their boss.
  • Dirty Coward: Most of the crew is composed by cowards who refuse to take any risks when they know they don't stand a chance. When Buggy is captured by the Marines, though they want to save him, once Alvida points out how impossible it is to escape that prison, they quickly give up wishing him good luck. Once Crocodile and Mihawk beat Buggy up and intend to kill him over a mistake about the formation of Cross Guild, his closest crew members (Mohji, Richie and Cabaji) do nothing to save him and all agree to serve Crocodile in order to save themselves, completely uncaring over the years of comradeship they've shared with their captain.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Goes from a moderately successful pirate crew in the East Blue to a large and powerful Warlord crew to one of the absolute, most powerful and influential pirate crews on the planet.
  • Hired Guns: The Pirate Dispatch Organization consists mainly of mercenaries.
  • Private Military Contractors: During the timeskip, with Buggy becoming a Warlord, the crew becomes an organization of mercenaries that works across the entire world.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Notable as the only pirate crew that doesn't follow the standard "captain is the strongest" rule. Following the Marineford Arc, Buggy, Mohji, Cabaji, and Alvida remain in charge, despite the fact that all of their new members completely outclass them.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: During Buggy's introduction, when Buggy mistakenly believes that one of his crew is insulting his nose, he snaps and blows the guy to smithereens with a cannonball. In the anime, Buggy is initially going to do the same thing, but is persuaded in letting him live.
  • Terrible Trio: In the crew there are two pathetically weak trios: a threesome of low level pirates called the Tightrope Walking Funan Bros, who have the bad luck of stumbling into Zoro, and the Superhuman Domingos, who are effortlessly taken care of by Luffy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Downplayed. The crewmembers don't get stronger during the story, but gain many more powerful allies, including many strong Impel Down escapees. Their strength increase is further exacerbated after the events of the Wano arc where former warlords Crocodile and Dracule Mihawk enter its ranks, although they are actually the real ones in charge and fund a new organization: Cross Guild.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Because they have been mooching off of Buggy's success as a Warlord, Mohji, Richie, Cabaji, Alvida and Galdino never bother to train or improve their skills and are usually seen lazing off and enjoying the festivities, not even caring about the fact that most all of the other recruits are leagues above them in strength. Mohji and Richie in particular are a prime example, having gotten overweight from over eating and being a lot weaker than they used to be.

"All of the world's treasure belongs to me!"

Buggy the Clown is the first real pirate that Luffy encounters early on in his travels. Buggy is a rather gaudy individual who used to be on the legendary Roger Pirates crew, along with Luffy's idol Shanks, who Buggy eventually bore a grudge against for unwittingly foiling a scheme to find a legendary treasure. After Gold Roger's death, the two went their separate ways, and while Shanks went on to become one of the Four Emperors, Buggy hung around the relatively tame East Blue. His Devil Fruit is the Chop-Chop Fruit (Bara Bara no Mi), which lets him split his body apart as he pleases.

After his defeat at Luffy's hands, he teams up with Luffy's Stalker with a Crush Alvida, and after a failed attempt at revenge, enters the Grand Line in pursuit of the Straw Hats. Through Buggy's major luck and charisma in stringing along a bunch of more powerful but completely gullible breakout criminals from Impel Down, as well as his past history of being associated with former Pirate King Gol D. Roger and being "friends" with Emperor Red-Haired Shanks, Buggy managed to gain the World Government's attention and he was made a Warlord. Dubbed "the Genius Jester," he became the leader of the Pirate Dispatch Organization, continuing to lead a massive group of pirates who all completely dwarf him in power.

Following the events of the Wano arc, Buggy rises to the rank of Emperor, once again through pure luck and happenstance, and helps found the Cross Guild with Crocodile and Mihawk.

His bounty at the time he becomes a Warlord is 15,000,000 Berries, the lowest of the bunch besides Blackbeard's former bounty of 0. However, with the dissolution of the organization and the World Government believing that he is the mastermind of the newly created Cross Guild organization, Buggy's bounty increases to a staggering 3,189,000,000 berries.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In the manga, Buggy's Establishing Character Moment is cruelly executing via cannon a crew member who is begging for mercy, just because he mistakenly believes said crew member insulted his nose. In the anime, Buggy just lifts his underling with his Devil Fruit Power and strangles him, but then does show him mercy by releasing him, making him appear much less of a Bad Boss.
  • Affably Evil: While he's definitely a pirate in the traditional sense, Buggy can be pretty easygoing and fun-loving as well if approached in the right way, as seen when Nami brings him Luffy as the price to join his crew (although it was all a diversion). As a former member of the Roger Pirates, his love of partying and generally having a good time is incredibly strong. However, it's also very easy to get on his bad side, where he shows his cruel side.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Buggy is a huge coward and tries to beg forgiveness from Mihawk and Crocodile for unintentionally taking credit for Cross Guild from them, even offering multiple times to lick their shoes. Mihawk is amazed that an Emperor of the Sea has such little pride.
  • Always Someone Better: Deep down, Buggy felt completely outclassed by Shanks growing up, even abandoning his dreams of becoming the Pirate King due to his belief that Shanks would inevitably be Roger's true successor. Ironically, Shanks ends up inspiring Buggy to give his dreams a second chance, since if he can end up with the same status as Shanks, even if only by sheer luck, then maybe he has a chance at becoming the Pirate King himself.
  • Arc Villain: Buggy is the main villain of the Orange Town Arc, being the leader of the pirate crew that conquered the town. Unfortunately for him, Luffy doesn't remember what happened during this time except Buggy cutting his hat and him kicking the clown's ass.
  • Art Evolution: Buggy's first appearances emphasized the evil aspect of his appearance, invoking a Monster Clown vibe. However, later appearances depict him in a much more comedic light and with more circular shapes, emphasizing the comic aspect of his character.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Buggy tends to wear striped clothes as a visual clue of his ability to split his body parts.
  • Authority in Name Only: Buggy is named one of the Four Emperors because he's believed to have created the Cross Guild organization since his overzealous followers put his face at the top of the organization's poster. Crocodile and Mihawk, the actual masterminds of the organization, are pissed at first but decide to use Buggy's status to their advantage and use him as a scapegoat they can cut loose when they so choose. Buggy later turns this on their heads by declaring that Cross Guild will seek out the One Piece, showing that he's not the Puppet King they expected him to be.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: You wouldn't think it at first, but deep down Buggy really does hold respect for Shanks. While Buggy insists that his grudge came from Shanks accidentally causing him to eat his Devil Fruit, it actually started with Shanks' refusal to follow in Roger's footsteps by becoming the Pirate King.
  • Badass on Paper:
    • Exaggerated. While Buggy is one of the weakest pirates in the world, thanks to the revelation that he was part of Gold Roger's crew (although he was merely a cabin boy) and then speaking to Shanks, one of the Four Emperors (and fellow cabin boy when they were in the Roger pirates), like he's nothing, many strong pirates are impressed by Buggy's apparent abilities and join his crew, which, over the timeskip, goes from an average pirate crew to a large criminal and mercenary organization. At the same time, the World Government is led to believe that Buggy was just pretending to be weak all along and gives him a position among the Seven Warlords, reserved to strong and renowned pirates.
    • It becomes even more extreme after the Warlord system is abolished and Buggy becomes one of the Four Emperors, meaning that the World Government considers him among the strongest pirates of the world. And he only gets this position because his men put him front and center on the Cross Guild's poster (thus literally turning him into a badass on paper), making the World Government accidentally believe he's the group's leader.
  • Bad Boss: Buggy doesn't treat his subordinates well, and blows up a crewmember for having seemingly insulted his nose. He gets nicer over time, however, because he gains many new members who are much stronger than him, meaning he can't afford to treat them badly. Though, he doesn't become nice enough not to try and sacrifice them to ensure his own escape once the Warlord system disbands and the Marines come to try and arrest Buggy.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Subverted. After the Warlord System is abolished, Buggy apparently uses his power and wealth to start issuing his own bounties on marines. This bold move is enough to give him the position of one of the Four Emperors. However, Crocodile is the true mastermind behind the bounties and the formation of Buggy's Cross Guild. Buggy accidentally took all the credit for this idea, so Crocodile decides to use him as a scapegoat so that he and Mihawk can work unnoticed and leave whenever they choose.
  • Berserk Button: Buggy gets easily angered if someone even points out his red nose, without necessarily making fun of it. In his first appearance, he blows up one of his underlings because he misheard him and thinks that he was talking about his nose.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Oda has stated Buggy has the potential to be one of the strongest people in the series if he actually cared enough to apply himself. While easy to forget, there are times Buggy gets properly motivated into actually showing it off:
    • While Buggy is very goofy, he remains a cruel pirate who would pillage and burn an entire town just to gather some money. He's also somehow charismatic enough to inspire loyalty in a group of Impel Down escapees who are all stronger than him, which is part of why he ends up becoming one of the Seven Warlords after the Time Skip.
    • Mihawk and Crocodile expect him to be an easily controlled Puppet King. Once Shanks going for One Piece rekindles his dream of being Pirate King, he finally gains actual motivation and proceeds to manipulate their massive crew into backing his goal in one charismatic speech.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Downplayed. Buggy gets a massive burst of confidence after the escaped Impel Down prisoners rally around him when his past in the Roger pirates is revealed and both they and the Marines believe him to be of comparable strength to his old shipmate, Shanks. Thus, Buggy sets his eyes on taking Whitebeard's place as an Emperor. However, despite becoming an effective big name in the pirate world, Buggy remains well aware of his own potential.
  • Blessed with Suck: Buggy doesn't consider his Devil Fruit power worth losing the ability to swim for, because while it gives him a myriad of abilities one might see as useful, he was an excellent swimmer before eating it and planned to swim his way to many underwater treasures. He still holds a grudge to Shanks to this day for having accidentally made him swallow the Chop-Chop fruit. This attitude was endemic to the Roger pirates as a whole, who generally didn't see the advantages that came with a Devil Fruit outweighing the cost of being unable to swim, especially given their Haki abilities were sufficient to enable them to beat super-powered opponents and monsters hundreds of times larger than them with ease.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Oda states that Buggy could be one of the most powerful characters in the series if he ever bothered to train himself up. However, since his ambition is getting as much treasure as he can and not getting power, Buggy doesn't have much interest in furthering his fighting power and going up against real heavy hitters. The fact he was a member of the Roger Pirates lends credence to the idea that he's actually very powerful. After becoming a Warlord and gaining stronger crewmembers, Buggy begins to gather more power as well and, once the Warlord System is abolished, he gathers some very powerful allies like Crocodile and Mihawk and challenges the Marines by issuing bounties on marines. Subverted since it turns out that Crocodile is the real mastermind behind the Cross Guild and Buggy is only accidentally seen as the leader by the World Government... and then Double Subverted when seeing Shanks decide to go after One Piece inspires Buggy to give his dream of Pirate King a second chance. He promptly uses his charisma to manipulate things so their followers are all in, expecting them to go after One Piece, and thus Mihawk and Crocodile have no choice but to go along with it.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: While Buggy is a bumbling, incompetent blowhard who doesn't remotely live up to his full potential, he's also a skilled sailor, chemist and leader. He's able to make his way across dangerous seas and reach a good portion of the Grand Line, manufacture incredibly powerful bombs (and smuggle them into Impel Down), lead cutthroats who are way more powerful than him and successfully lie and bluff his way into becoming one of the Seven Warlords of the Seas. After the events of Onigashima, Buggy uses the resources he gathered to place bounties on marines and become allies with both Crocodile and Mihawk, leading to him becoming one of the Four Emperors. Subverted in this case, however, since the bounties and the formation of the Cross Guild is all Crocodile's idea and Buggy accidentally became the group's leader. Double Subverted when Buggy finally finds the resolve and proves himself far more clever than they expected him to be.
  • Character Catchphrase: He inserts "flashy" into almost every sentence he speaks.
  • Character Tic: When Buggy gets surprised, his body pops apart, making his reactions more comical.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In his fight against Zoro, Buggy pretends to be cut in two, while he can easily reattach his body, in order to stab Zoro in the back.
  • Cornered Rattlesnake: Learning Shanks is going after One Piece while Buggy is being tortured, belittled, and made a Puppet King by Mihawk and Crocodile causes Buggy to realize his options are either go for broke and go after his dreams again, or die at their hands. He chooses the former, broadcasting to Cross Guild that they're going after One Piece despite their threats and them actively beating him up at the time, effectively throwing a massive wrench in their plans in favor of his own.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Oda has stated Buggy could be one of the most powerful characters in the setting if he actually tried. He can beat powerful foes with a bit of teamwork and motivation. Otherwise, he has a very short attention span and doesn't know how to be subtle.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Buggy is the first character to star in his own mini-adventure, which follows him after his defeat, where he befriends Alvida and reunites with his crew.
  • Detachment Combat: Buggy ate the Chop-Chop fruit, which lets him detach and levitate any part of his body (except his feet; they remain on the ground and he can't levitate too far away from them). It lets him attack from almost any angle, and he's effectively immune to slashing attacks as well.
  • Devious Daggers: Clownish look aside, Buggy is a traditional greedy pirate who's not above using dirty tricks in a fight and his main weapons are sharp and curved daggers, which hint at his personality and unfair way of fighting. He can hold up to four daggers per hand, each kept between two fingers.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?:
    • Luffy uses Buggy as a shield against Mihawk, who slashes Buggy to bits, but Buggy easily survives and puts himself back together thanks to his Devil Fruit ability. All the while, Buggy is just angry and annoyed at Luffy and Mihawk for using him as a cutting board/shield. Then Buggy attacks Mihawk with a Muggy Ball but Mihawk counters it back and Buggy stares in silence as the ball flies towards him and explodes in his own face.
    • When he finally reunites with Shanks, his only instinct is to rant at and threaten him for screwing him over all those years ago, even if Shanks didn't mean it, and over a bunch of other stuff. Shanks is one of the Four Emperors and one of the most feared and powerful pirates on the planet, but Buggy knows him well enough that he doesn't see him that way and acts like they were still cabin boys around him (and, to an extent, so does Shanks). His crew, though, doesn't know any better and thinks their captain is awesome for speaking to Shanks like that. This gives Buggy a good reputation that helps him to become a Warlord.
    • After the Warlord system is abolished, Buggy decided to start issuing bounties on marines by forming the Cross Guild. By sending less scrupulous bounty hunters after marines and encouraging the criminal underworld that he already had a great deal of control over to hunt their own hunters, he's flipped one of the established tenets of the world's order on its head and proven himself to be such an existential threat to the World Government that it earned him the Emperor title despite being nowhere near as much of a powerhouse as the other Emperors. Until it turns out this was all Crocodile's idea and Buggy was only given the credit for this idea because the World Government mistook him for being the group's leader.
    • And after learning Shanks has joined the hunt for One Piece rekindled Buggy's own desire for the title, he outmaneuvers both Mihawk and Crocodile, two fighters who could kill him with the ease of swatting a gnat, by publicly declaring the Cross Guild is going to hunt for the One Piece themselves. Despite how utterly furious they are at this, the response from the Guild is so unanimously excited that they know how quickly their nation of pirates would collapse if they tried to kill Buggy now, so they have no choice but to go along with supporting Buggy's bid for King of the Pirates, effectively truly turning them into the subservient heavies they pretended to be while using him as a Puppet King.
  • Dirty Coward: Buggy is easily intimidated by anything that could be remotely dangerous to him and will take any lengths necessary to ensure his own survival no matter how dishonorable it may be. For instance, when the World Government disbands the Warlord system and the Marines come to arrest Buggy and his crew, Buggy plans to abandon his crew to the Marines so that he can escape.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: It's said he once destroyed an entire town just because some kids made fun of his nose.
  • The Dreaded: Subverted. When the marines reveal his past with Shanks on Roger's ship and Buggy doesn't show any fear and gets mad at him, many begin to fear and respect him, believing he's on par with the strongest pirates of the world. This reputation earns him a spot as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea over the Time Skip and, after the Wano Arc, as one of the Four Emperors, just like Shanks. However, Buggy remains one of the weakest characters in the entire series and those who actually know him are aware of his actual strength. Also, his status as an Emperor is a hoax as Crocodile and Mihawk are using him as their group's scapegoat leader and because Buggy's position on the group's poster makes the World Government mistake him as the group's mastermind.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: During Buggy's flashback in Orange Town, Buggy's Devil Fruit is regarded as some rare and mystical artifact, and no one is completely sure if the rumors about them giving you powers and taking away your ability to swim are even true. While Devil Fruits are rare in the East Blue, in the Grand Line it's practically impossible to go five feet without encountering a Devil Fruit user. Making it even weirder is that Buggy and Shanks were members of the Roger Pirates.
  • Enemy Mine: Subverted. Buggy teams up with Luffy while in Impel Down in order to help him save Ace but in reality he has every intention of abandoning Luffy, whenever the right occasion pops up. The right occasion never happens and Buggy remains Luffy's ally through the entire escape from Impel Down and during the Paramount War.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Buggy first appears sitting in a Slouch of Villainy that indicates his laziness, and then kills a subordinate for having accidentally mentioned his nose, showing his evil and cartoonish personality, as well as his major Berserk Button.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite mistreating his subordinates and betraying his allies whenever he can, Buggy sobbed uncontrollably during Gold Roger's execution. Considering that Buggy spent most of his youth serving as a cabin boy in his crew, Roger may very well have been the closest thing he ever had to a father-figure.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Buggy is so greedy and materialistic that he's perplexed by Boodle, who considers Orange Town a treasure. At the same time he dismisses Luffy's hat (as well as the fact it was Shanks'), because he believes that the only treasure is a classic chest with gold and gems.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • In his debut arc, Buggy poses as a contrast to Luffy. Their powers can also be considered opposites — both abilities allow their users to, in a sense, extend their bodies, but while Luffy can resist blunt force, he's still vulnerable to blades, while Buggy can resist blades but is vulnerable to blunt force. Also made apparent by their differing attitudes about the cost of gaining a Devil Fruit Power. Before eating a Devil Fruit, Buggy was an excellent swimmer who planned on using his talent to find a legendary stash of treasure, and he now resents the fact that he can't swim anymore. Luffy, on the other hand, before eating a Devil Fruit was such a poor swimmer that he was nicknamed "Anchor" and as such doesn't seem to mind his inability to swim at all since he was so bad at it, anyway. Both become elevated to the rank of Emperor at about the same time, but Luffy does so via massively increasing his strength and fighting skills to be able to challenge Kaido in combat, whereas Buggy accidentally becomes an Emperor after his henchmen put him at the center of the Cross Guild's poster and the World Government confuses him as the mastermind behind the Cross Guild. The Reveal of the true nature of Luffy's Devil Fruit retroactively turns their fight, one of the first Devil Fruit matchups in the story, into a fight between a Clown and a Cartoon character, both creations designed to spread joy and entertainment to others.
    • Buggy is also very much a counterpart to his old friend and rival Shanks, since both started as apprentices of Gold Roger, and now both are in positions of great power (Buggy is a Warlord of the Sea and then becomes an Emperor and Shanks is an Emperor). However, Shanks got to that position through talent and effort while Buggy got into power through leeching on his former crew's reputation, the loyalty and power of his followers from Impel Down, and the World Government mistaking him as a criminal mastermind.
  • Evil Laugh: His Signature Laugh, "Gyahahahaha!"
  • Facial Markings: Buggy always has standard clown makeup, which changes with each of his major appearances, and a jolly roger on his forehead. When he was young, he only had some makeup around his eyes.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero:
    • Or rather, Fake Ultimate Villain. When he was young, Buggy served as a cabin boy on the ship of Gold Roger (the former Pirate King) alongside Shanks (who is now one of the Four Emperors). When this fact came to the World Government's attention, they immediately assumed that Buggy was just as strong as Shanks and that he had been practicing Obfuscating Stupidity the whole time. Thanks to his fake bravado, after the Impel Down Arc, Buggy gains an army of dangerous world-class criminals under his command. Buggy now has essentially one of the strongest crews in the series, to the point the World Government sought him out to become a Warlord of the Sea.
    • It goes one step higher when, after the Seven Warlords were disbanded at the Levely, combined with both Kaido and Big Mom's defeat at the climax of the raid on Onigashima and Buggy's formation of the Cross Guild, he becomes one of the Four Emperors. And he only ends up becoming an Emperor thanks to his followers loving him enough to put him at the front of the guild's poster even though Crocodile and Mihawk were the true leaders of the guild.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Buggy and Galdino are initially indifferent to each other, but their shared experience during the Impel Down's escape and the Paramount War make both of them very close, to the point that the latter becomes part of Buggy's crew. Their bond turns out to not be that strong, however, since Galdino says that he was never Buggy's friend in order to get back into Crocodile's good graces once it's clear that both Crocodile and Mihawk intend to kill Buggy.
  • Flight: Buggy's detached body parts float, so he can make his entire body fly when he detaches it from his feet, which remain on the ground, but not too far away from them.
  • Foil: In the Final Saga, Buggy poses as contrast to Crocodile. Both of them used to dream of becoming the Pirate King, but eventually gave up and grew cynical. Of the two of them, however, Buggy is the one who actually has the courage to give his dreams a second try, ironically making him far more of a real pirate than Crocodile.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare:
    • Subverted. While he gets a powerful crew of dangerous pirates behind him after Impel Down and a reputation as a legitimate threat in the eyes of the Marines because of his affiliation with the Roger Pirates, he's pretty much the same Buggy that Luffy fought early on in the series, at least in terms of power, even if during the Time Skip he becomes one of the Seven Warlords.
    • Apparently Double Subverted following the end of the Wano arc, as not only does he manage to become an Emperor by assigning bounties on marines, but he also forms an alliance with former Warlords Crocodile and Mihawk. But in reality, Crocodile is the real mastermind behind the Cross Guild and Buggy is only accidentally seen as the leader of the group by the World Government due to him being at the front of the group's poster.
  • Fun Size: A variation. After splitting his body into multiple parts, Buggy tries to recompose himself, but Nami has tied his torso and his limbs, leaving Buggy only with his head, hands and feet in a comically small version of himself. Buggy spends most of his mini-adventure in this state, until he finds his crew and his remaining body parts.
  • Gag Nose: Buggy has a red and round clown nose, which is his actual nose and not a fake one. Making fun of his nose or even mentioning it to him quickly angers Buggy.
  • Greed: Buggy acts as a foil to Luffy and Chou-Chou during the Orange Town Arc's theme of treasure. While the latter two consider a treasure something that is very close to them, even if it has little value to others, Buggy believes in treasures in the traditional sense, like a chest full of money and gold. His main motivation over the course of the series is to get his hands on Captain John's treasure. After becoming the captain of a large criminal organization and one of the Seven Warlords of the sea, Buggy plans to get even richer and more powerful.
  • Grew a Spine: After putting up with Mihawk and Crocodile's torture, belittlement, and being used as a Puppet King long enough, learning Shanks is going after One Piece sparks Buggy to stop being afraid to die and stand up to the two. He proceeds to force the two far more powerful pirates to go along with his desire to be Pirate King by broadcasting to Cross Guild they're joining the chase for One Piece.
  • Groin Attack: When Buggy's top half goes after Nami who is plundering his treasures, Luffy stops him by kicking his bottom half in the balls.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Buggy gets annoyed very easily, especially when someone brings up his nose, but his reactions are always Played for Laughs and never taken seriously.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: While separating one's body into multiple parts doesn't sound like the flashiest power, Buggy is able to make good use of it with his own wits (when he wants to, which is not too often). It's also extremely useful when he's facing blade users, since he can harmlessly reattach the pieces together, even if cut by the world's strongest swordsman.
  • Hidden Depths: For all of Buggy's faults, he does love the Roger Pirates and was as devastated as Shanks when he witnessed Roger's execution. As the series progresses, hints about Buggy's personality surface, revealing a more ambitious and determined person than the cowardly pirate he was introduced as. Firstly, he never relied on the reputation of his former crewmates in order to gain influence, and in fact never boasted his connections to them to anyone until the truth came out during the Paramount War. Secondly, at times he displayed great personal bravery and bigger ambitions than just amassing wealth or power like many other people who are vastly stronger than him. This hidden side of him was finally displayed in full after the fall of Kaido and Big Mom, demonstrated by him defying Mihawk and Crocodile's plan to use his former organization to create a nation of their own, and instead he whipped the rest of Cross Guild into a frenzy with an impassioned speech to get them to join the race to reclaim the One Piece, seemingly unafraid of angering his two 'partners' by doing so.
  • Improbable Use of a Weapon: Buggy's usual knife-fighting style consists of holding three or four per hand, like knuckle-dusters, which would normally break your bones.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Buggy is subject to a lot of punishment in the story, like getting struck by a lightning or having a cannonball explode in his face, all of which is treated like comedy. However, despite being one of the weakest characters of the series, he shrugs off all the punishment he receives like it's nothing.
  • Large and in Charge: Invoked. After becoming a Warlord and obtaining more power, Buggy ties his fluctuating hands and head to a cape to appear larger and more intimidating.
  • Large Ham: Following his clown-theme, Buggy is extremely loud and bombastic, usually in a comedic sense. He tends to speak a lot, to the point every panel shows him with his mouth open, and to have extreme reactions, often aided by his ability to detach his body parts.
  • Laughably Evil: While in his initial appearance, albeit already a goofy character, Buggy is somewhat threatening, from his second appearance onward, Buggy is still as evil as always, but his role as comic relief is more emphasized and is never a threat to the heroes.
  • Leg Cannon: Buggy somehow manages to hide a functioning gun loaded with a Muggy Ball, which is powerful enough to level cities, in his foot and not get it confiscated by Impel Down's guard. He uses it for the first time to attack Minotaurus.
  • Magnetic Hero:
    • Or Magnetic Villain in this case. While Luffy has a natural talent to attract people and making them help him out of sheer will, according to Jimbei, Buggy is good at leading them by his cunning and, especially, his luck. Over the course of the Paramount War, Buggy's accidental feats gather him a lot of strong allies and his reputation grows to the point he becomes one of the Seven Warlords and uses his gathered alliance to build an extensive network of mercenaries and monetary connections.
    • After the disbanding of the Seven Warlords, he's influential enough to somehow become an Emperor and has both Crocodile and Mihawk under him. Slightly subverted in that Crocodile and Mihawk are using Buggy as a scapegoat, but Buggy's men are so loyal to him that they put him on the front of the Cross Guild's poster, thus accidentally making him an Emperor.
  • Mistaken for Badass: Thanks to many lucky events, many former Impel Down prisoners, most of whom are way stronger than him, end up believing Buggy is a fearsome pirate able to clash with the strongest warriors of the world. Things gets taken a step further when Buggy lashes out at Shanks, one of the Four Emperors whose mere presence would make everyone terrified, and Buggy doesn't fear Shanks simply because they know each other on a personal level. This huge rise in fame allows Buggy to even be asked to become one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea while, in truth, he's nowhere near the threat the authorities and his own crew think he is. And then he becomes an Emperor after the World Government mistakes him for the boss of Cross Guild instead of Crocodile and Mihawk.
  • Monster Clown: Subverted. Despite his clown appearance and being an evil pirate, as well as a decent threat, after his introduction, Buggy appears more funny than scary and tends to play the role of comic-relief.
  • My Greatest Failure: Buggy never actually got to see what Roger found at Laugh Tale as he took ill before that expedition. Because he decided to watch over him while the rest of the crew was gone, Shanks didn't get to go either. Thus, neither of them know what's on that island or what the One Piece is, and while Raleigh has shown a willingness to impart that information, both former cabin boys never saw fit to ask him for their own reasons.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Buggy had given up on his dream of becoming the Pirate King long ago. After events of the Wano arc leave him in the exact same position as his former crewmate Shanks, Buggy decides that, even if he only ended up there through pure happenstance, he's going to give his dreams another shot.
  • Near-Villain Victory: At Logue Town, Buggy becomes the villain who comes the closest to killing Luffy. He captures him and prepares to execute him, but a thunderbolt strikes him at the last second, saving Luffy.
  • Neck Lift: With the Chop-Chop Fruit, Buggy can detach his hand and strangle a person remotely. In his debut, he lifts by the neck a subordinate who accidentally mentioned his nose and then he lifts Boodle in the same way after the latter challenged him.
  • Never My Fault: He blames Shanks for him losing his ability to swim despite him being the one who chose to go behind his back and steal the Devil Fruit.
  • Never Speak Ill of the Dead: Downplayed. While Buggy doesn't speak ill of him, he acts indifferent towards Bon Clay seemingly sacrificing his life so that everyone else can escape from Impel Down. Luffy, as you might expect, gets pissed at Buggy and punches him in the face.
  • No Badass to His Valet: Buggy is the only person alive who doesn't have any reverence for or fear of Shanks, one of the Four Emperors, because, despite their huge gap in power, their relationship as former cabin boys in Roger's ship transcends it. Buggy doesn't give a damn about Shanks' worldwide reputation; all he cares about is the fact that Shanks is (in his eyes) the reason why Buggy has Devil Fruit powers, and thus can never swim again (and he was an excellent swimmer to boot), and was unable to get the treasure he wanted all those years ago by selling the Devil Fruit he ate. Shanks, in turn, outright welcomes his attitude, due to them being old friends in his perspective.
  • No MacGuffin, No Winner: Buggy's attitude towards the One Piece during the manga's last act invokes the inverse. He reminds Crocodile and Mihawk that they don't need the largest crew strength, resources, and political influence to actually get the treasure. If the stars align, they won't even have to fight any of the series' heavy hitters. What matters is laying their hands upon it first for the glory and esteem.
  • No-Sell: His Devil Fruit power prevents knives and other bladed weapons from hurting him; as a result, he survived easily in Impel Down, because the prisoners are tortured on the first level by making them run through a forest of trees with knife-like leaves. He also survives an encounter with Mihawk, the strongest swordsman of the world, by recomposing his body after being cut.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Mihawk and Crocodile torturing him and using him as a Puppet King eventually causes Buggy to decide he'd rather die than keep living like this. This results in Buggy instantly turning the tables by declaring to their crews that they're going after One Piece, forcing them to go along with it whether they want to or not.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: After appearing as a comical villain with a circus-themed crew, Buggy and his crew are the first villains to actually defeat Luffy in their second encounter, and would have killed him if not for some Divine Intervention, forcing the Straw Hats into retreat. Despite being one of the weakest characters combat-wise, his Devil Fruit ability has been shown to be one of the best when it comes to swordsmen, as it essentially makes him Nigh Invulnerable when dealing with them. Even Mihawk can't hurt him with his sword. It doesn't stop him from easily curb-stomping Buggy when he tries to fight back, but hey, it's still pretty impressive. Oda has pointed out Buggy could be one of the strongest guys around if he actually was properly motivated.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Between acts 2 and 3 of the Wano Arc Buggy is terrified at the thought of actually having to fight the Marines after they disbanded the Warlords. Yet, at the end of the Wano Arc, in Chapter 1053, it turns out that not only has he survived, he's become one of the new Emperors! And in Chapter 1056, he somehow gets both Crocodile and Mihawk to join his group! Subverted because it turns out that Crocodile saved him from the Marines and Buggy's new status as an Emperor is due to his placement on the group's poster tricking the World Government into believing he's the mastermind behind the Cross Guild.
  • Only in It for the Money: Unlike other pirates who aim to attain power to fulfill their dreams, Buggy's primarily a buccaneer due to his love for treasure and has little love for anything else besides partying and (occasionally) his crew. In fact as a Warlord Buggy started a legitimate mercenary service to make a genuine payday and all with the World Government's seal of approval to boot.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • To further show just how out of his league he is in comparison to the other Warlords, Buggy's reaction to the news that the Warlords system has been disbanded and the Marines are coming to capture him and his crew is sheer and raw panic — which is in stark contrast to Mihawk's Blood Knight delight, Hancock's absolutely smug but justified Bring It attitude, and Weevil's confusion.
    • Buggy panics when he sees Crocodile rescuing him from the Marines since he knows that Crocodile has come to collect Buggy's debt to him, with Buggy considering Crocodile's arrival worse than the Marines.
  • Opportunistic Bastard:
    • How could a rather ineffectual, lazy, and really goofy number like Buggy get to where he is now, despite being largely outclassed by most of his cohorts and the people he acquaints with? Simple: Buggy is nothing short of excellent at spotting and seizing the right opportunities at the right time and taking advantage of any situation and other people's gullibility, as he showed during the Impel Down Arc. And while he never meant to become one of the Warlords, he was quick to adapt to his accidental notoriety and entrench it firmly enough to build a successful business of mercenaries.
    • After the dissolution of the Seven Warlords, Buggy took the opportunity to form the Cross Guild, team up with both Crocodile and Mihawk and create bounties for the Marines, making Buggy one of the Four Emperors in the process. However, Crocodile is the true creator of the Cross Guild and the bounty idea and, while Buggy did play an integral part in its formation by giving Crocodile use of all his resources to start his business, Buggy accidentally takes all the credit for it since the World Government mistakenly believes that he's the true mastermind.
  • Out of the Frying Pan: After the dissolution of the Warlord system, Buggy is assaulted by a Marine fleet but some underlings notice that someone is saving them, then Buggy finds out that someone is Crocodile who saw the writing on the wall and came to collect on Buggy's debt before he could find somewhere to hide in the chaos, which Buggy says is outright worse than if he had been captured by the Marines. Then Mihawk shows up as well and Buggy is unintentionally declared as the leader of the three former Warlords which pisses off Mihawk and Crocodile even more, and they beat the crap out of him as revenge. In the end, they opt to spare his life as long as he draws attention from them but unlike the World Government who were hands off with the Warlords, Mihawk and Crocodile keep Buggy on a very short leash and intend feed him to the dogs once they have no more use for him. Buggy himself then pushes things even further than that once he hears that Shanks has gone out to claim One Piece, by declaring that Cross Guild will be joining the hunt themselves. While he's reclaimed some control from Mihawk and Crocodile, Buggy's going all in on one of the most dangerous pursuits in the world.
  • Performance Anxiety: When the entire world's eyes are on him when he steals the Transponder Snail at Marineford and tries to make his big debut he completely freezes up and can only repeat his name.
  • Petty Childhood Grudge: Even after more than twenty years have passed, Buggy still holds a grudge against Shanks for having seemingly made him swallow the Chop-Chop fruit when they were teens. Buggy was actually planning to escape with the Devil Fruit so he could sell it and Shanks accidentally scared him. When they encounter each other many years later in Marineford, Buggy bursts into a rage fit while Shanks doesn't even remember the accident and is actually happy to meet him after so many years. At least on the surface. In reality, Buggy's grudge against Shanks comes from the fact that Shanks chose not to follow in Roger's footsteps by becoming the Pirate King. Buggy, who had already given up on his dream due to feeling outclassed by Shanks, interpreted Shanks' decision as disrespecting Roger's last wishes and cut off ties with him.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: His presence in Impel Down and Marineford lightens up the mood; Oda himself notes to have included him to add some levity to what is otherwise an extremely dark part of the story.
  • The Power of Acting: One of Buggy's best assets is his ability to work a crowd and convince everyone he's as tough as they think he is. While at first his gained reputation is entirely unintentional on his part, once he realizes it, he milks it for all its worth and over the two years Time Skip, Buggy builds an entire criminal and mercenary organization around his name.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Downplayed. According to a SBS (a fan question answered by Oda), Buggy could even detach his penis with his Chop-Chop fruit power. However, being a Shonen series, he never applies it.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When he meets Luffy in Impel Down, despite having fought him in their last encounters, Buggy decides to guide him to where Ace is kept. It's quickly revealed that he does it because it would send Luffy towards the most dangerous level of the prison. When he accidentally falls in the second level with Luffy, Buggy still helps him with the intention to abandon him at the first useful chance.
  • Precision F-Strike: In the Funimation dub, he utters the word "shit" twice — once after being ejected out to sea in his chibi form following his first defeat to Luffy, and again while in disguise at Loguetown when his hand of cards seems to foretell disaster in executing his revenge plot against Luffy — which it does.
  • Promoted to Scapegoat: After Buggy unintentionally takes credit for the birth of Cross Guild, Mihawk and Crocodile agree to allow him to be the public face of Cross Guild and all the dangers that come with it while they get to move about unseen in the shadows.
  • The Puppet Cuts His Strings: After learning that Shanks is going after the One Piece, Buggy decides to have the Cross Guild also join in the hunt with Mihawk and Crocodile being forced to go along with it.
  • Puppet King: After Buggy is mistaken for being the mastermind behind the Cross Guild and becomes one of the Four Emperors, Crocodile and Mihawk, the ones actually in charge, decide to use him as a figurehead leader to divert attention away from themselves. However, Buggy still is the one that the Cross Guild is loyal to, arguably making him the real leader at the end of the day. When Buggy goes against Crocodile's and Mihawk's demands and sends the Cross Guild into the hunt for the One Piece, there's nothing that Crocodile or Mihawk can do about it.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Zigzagged. Initially it's played straight, as Luffy has a much harder time dealing with Buggy than with Mohji and Richie, Buggy's subordinates. It becomes one of the most notable aversions in all of One Piece after he gains an entire crew's worth of followers consisting of Impel Down escapees, and every last one of them has a much higher bounty than Buggy. It's Zigzagged even more once the Cross Guild forms and he has both Crocodile and Mihawk as his executives since Crocodile and Mihawk are using Buggy as a Puppet King.
  • Recurring Character: Downplayed. Buggy is one of the characters who appear more often in the story and one of the very few villains to fight the Straw Hats in more than one Arc. He appears in the Orange Town Arc and the Logue Town Arc as the main villain, sharing the title with Smoker in the latter one, gets his own mini-adventure, appears sporadically during the story and then becomes an active player in the Impel Down and Marineford Arcs.
  • Red Baron: Following the Time Skip and his entry into the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he's given the title "Genius Jester". And taken further once he becomes an Emperor, he's then known as "The Bombastic Clown".
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Shanks' blue. While Shanks is not a calm person, he's cool compared to the eccentric and easily angered Buggy.
  • Refuge in Audacity: After the end of the Warlord system, he starts issuing bounties on marines and rather than have him punished, this act has him named as one of the new Four Emperors after the fall of Big Mom and Kaido. In truth, the idea is Crocodile's, who affiliates with Buggy but the World Government accidentally gives merit to the latter.
  • Rocket Punch: Buggy can detatch his hands to stab his enemies from distance.
  • Rousing Speech: Gives a motivating speech to his men when declaring that the Cross Guild will join the race for the One Piece.
"Tell me! What was the dream that took you out to sea?! Are your souls crying out for meaning?! Begging for a purpose, when your lives could be cut short at any moment?! Don't be cowards, soft and satisfied with the status quo! Reach out for what you want most of all! Remember that I've got your backs! Let's go and take it! The One Piece is ours!!!
  • Shoot Your Mate: As a proof of her loyalty, Buggy asks Nami, who had claimed to be joining his crew, to kill a caged Luffy with an explosive cannonball at point-blank range.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: When Luffy tells Buggy that he's going to be the King of the Pirates in Orange Town, Buggy reacts in shock before mocking him.
  • Slouch of Villainy: In his debut, Buggy is sitting lazily on a chair, lying on his side, immediately showing off his mean and lazy personality.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Inverted. Buggy is well aware that he's not strong, but thanks to many lucky circumstances, he becomes one of the most respected and famous pirates in the world, to the point that the World Government offers him a place among the Seven Warlords. Then, after Kaido and Big Mom's defeat, Buggy takes one of their places as one of the new Four Emperors of the sea, the biggest name a pirate can aim for, right after "King of the Pirates". After seeing that Shanks is going for that title, Buggy decides to try to become the "King of the Pirates" too. He is at least aware he only became an Emperor due to luck, though. He just figures that if luck took him far enough to reach the same heights as an Emperor like Shanks, then perhaps it'll take him all the way to becoming the "King of the Pirates", too.
  • Super Drowning Skills: As with everyone who has eaten a Devil Fruit, Buggy can't swim. Ironically, he used to be an exceptional swimmer before eating the Chop-Chop fruit. In a testament to how much Buggy is crippled by his own cynicism and cowardice, he is pretty much the only Fruit user in the entire series who complains about his weakness and doesn't feel that it's worth the power.
  • Token Super: While it never was his intention to eat the Chop-Chop Fruit, a fact that would haunt him for the years to come, Buggy is the only one among the Roger Pirates (discounting the non-Canon Douglas Bullet) to be a Devil Fruit user.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He's certainly grown a level or two since his first appearance. Most noticeably, he's upgraded his "Buggy balls" — cannon balls capable of obliterating a city block — to "Muggy Balls" — mothball-sized grenades with comparative power. The only problem is he's taken maybe a level or two in badass while everyone else has taken twenty.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In his first appearance, Buggy is not above abusing or even killing members of his crew for petty reasons. After losing to Luffy, he ends up spending a mini-adventure trying to recover his body and find his crew (who believes him to be dead). After he reunites with his crewmates, he seems to be much less abusive toward them afterwards, but remains a Jerkass to everybody else, though. However, as seen after the Time Skip, he doesn't become kind enough to not plan on abandoning his entire crew while they fight the Marines so that he can have a chance at escaping.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: Although Buggy only achieved his current status as an Emperor through sheer luck and happenstance, he still does share the same status as Shanks. Since Shanks starts making his move for the One Piece now that Big Mom and Kaido are out of the picture, Buggy works up the resolve to give his dream of becoming the Pirate King another chance.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Buggy blames Shanks for accidentally causing him to lose out on undersea treasure rather than thank him for rescuing him from drowning.
  • Unishment: After being caught, Buggy is sent into the first level of Impel Down, where the prisoners are tortured by being forced to run through trees with razor-sharp leaves until they bleed to death. Thanks to his Chop-Chop fruit, Buggy is immune to slashing damage and remains fine in the first level. Unfortunately for Buggy, Luffy makes him fall into lower levels, where his immunity isn't very useful.
  • Unluckily Lucky: During and after the dissolution of the Warlord system, Buggy bounces between being fortunate and pitifully unlucky. Crocodile takes care of the Marines that were sent to capture him, causing Buggy's subordinates to rejoice... and Buggy to panic because he borrowed money from Crocodile and knows that the Sand-Man has come to collect what he's owed. Buggy desperately convinces him that he and his resources can help with the new organization Crocodile is building, offering all services for free. Too bad Buggy's underlings (hopelessly devoted to their boss as ever) give him the main spot on Cross Guild's poster and then distribute it across the world before he can stop them. The end result: Buggy is considered the founder and chairman of the Cross Guild and thereby considered an Emperor, and Crocodile and Mihawk are quite unhappy with him about all this. Ultimately, Mihawk decides that they might as well let their "boss" be for now and persuades Crocodile to do the same; after all, with Buggy in the spotlight, the other two are all the freer to conduct their own business while he catches all the unwanted attention an Emperor would get. Besides, they can always kill him later. Buggy's subordinates assume that their captain's crying Tears of Joy when he's actually terrified out of his mind.
Buggy: {internally} Where is my life taking me?!
  • Unknown Rival: Buggy perceives Shanks as a sort of Sitcom Arch-Nemesis, who he blames for making him eat a Devil Fruit and losing his ability to swim. Disregarding the huge discrepancy in strength, Shanks is either completely unaware or selectively oblivious to this, thinking that they're still the same "friends" they've always been since they were kids. Though in a title image after Marineford, they are shown eating and drinking at a bar together while laughing, so it seems Shanks' opinion may be closer to the truth. Deep down, however, Buggy holds complete respect for Shanks, with Buggy's grudge in truth coming from Shanks' unwillingness to follow in Roger's footsteps when the two of them were kids.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Because Buggy is fundamentally a lazy, bitter coward who hates his Devil Fruit power, he doesn't bother training. Since he doesn't apply himself, he doesn't really get stronger and can't keep up with the insane power growth of Shanks or the Straw Hats even as his status rises to match them. Ironically, Oda has confirmed Buggy could be one of the strongest people in the series if he actually was willing to train.
  • Villainous Harlequin: His entire motif is a combination of a villainous clown (to go with his circus-themed crew) and a pirate while his Devil Fruit powers are a nod to certain circus tricks where people are seemingly cut into multiple parts. Fittingly for a clown-themed pirate, Buggy is one of the more comical villains of the series and, besides the East Blue saga, he's never a threat to the heroes.
  • Villainous Rescue:
    • With Alvida's help, Buggy saves his crew from the Kumate tribe when it's about to eat them.
    • He (albeit unintentionally) saves Luffy and Jimbei from Akainu during the Paramount War by flying them over to Law's submarine.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Although both he and Shanks constantly bickered with each other during their time working as cabin boys on Roger's ship, they were nearly always close together. Their relationship doesn't change much decades later when they meet at Marineford, and despite Buggy constantly antagonizing him, Shanks regards him as an old friend and doesn't hold any animosity towards him. In fact, their close relationship is part of what convinces the Marines that Buggy is an Almighty Janitor pretending to be weaker than he is.
  • Waddling Head: Luffy defeats him in the Orange Town Arc thanks to Nami tying down most of Buggy's body parts, leaving him with just his hands and feet attached to his head.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Downplayed example. Buggy is the first villain that manages to injure Luffy and give him trouble thanks to his Devil Fruit powers when compared to Alvida and Morgan. He's also the one who starts The Worf Effect tradition with Zoro and several following Arc Villains that the swordsman faces after him. Luffy is unable to defeat him by himself and needs Nami's help to finish him off. However, Luffy is still giving Buggy a run for his money in the fight. Another instance is that Buggy nearly kills Luffy during an ambush and is only foiled by lightning interfering with the execution.
  • Weak, but Skilled: As stated many times, Buggy isn't the most powerful character in the story by a long shot but his Devil Fruit abilities, well-concealed shrewdness, opportunistic behaviour, and close personal connections to some extremely powerful people allow him to make it all the way to the New World as a Warlord, despite being a Starter Villain and an overall goofball with a clown-like appearance. Plus, if all else fails, he's a genuinely talented chemist who can bring some serious explosive firepower to the table - you don't really need the physical strength to level a city block when a well-thrown Super Muggy Ball will get the job done just fine (and let you beat a hasty retreat at the same time).
  • White Gloves: Buggy's clown look and cartoony appearance are complemented by the white gloves he always wears. Said gloves visually separate his hands from his limbs, which become more noticeable when he literally detaches them.
  • You Are What You Hate: Accused Shanks of being a coward and a traitor to Roger's memory for not immediately going for the One Piece after their captain's execution. Despite initially intending to go after it himself, Buggy became sidetracked with partying and plundering across East Blue while Shanks quietly accumulated comrades and resources to enter the Grand Line a full decade before he eventually got around to it.

"I'm telling you, there is no animal in this world that won't obey me!"
Chapter 12

Buggy's first mate. He's a self-declared pet tamer and has a giant lion called Richie. He generally doesn't fight much himself and lets Richie do the job.

In the Orange Village arc, he and Richie fight Luffy, but are quickly defeated. During Buggy's disappearance, he challenges Cabaji for the title of captain, but both are accidentally defeated by Richie.

  • Anime Hair: His hair goes from resembling the head of a teddy bear, complete with ears, to a rabbit-like model, a lion mane model and, in his last appearance, a ram model.
  • The Beastmaster: He claims that he can tame any animal or beast, but his only attempt with ChouChou is an Epic Fail.
  • Bearer of Bad News: While Buggy celebrate the positive effects Doflamingo's defeat has on his business, Mohji breaks the mood, telling him their giant mercenaries have left.
  • Big Eater: Post timeskip he's always seen eating, and he's gotten fat because of it.
  • Big Ol Eye Brows: He's got some thick eyebrows.
  • Co-Dragons: Despite being referred to as Buggy's first mate, he shares equal authority with Cabaji. When their captain is temporarily missing, Mohji and Cabaji fight to decide who's the new captain. After Marineford, the strongest part is no longer true but they are still among the closest ones.
  • Formerly Fit: In the first half of the story, he's lean and even slightly tall. After the timeskip, he's gotten quite fat.
  • Kick the Dog: Not exactly kick, but burning down the shop of the dog's beloved and deceased owner is definitely something only an evil pirate would do.
  • Morality Pet: Richie is literally this to Mohji. While he's not completely evil, he cares a lot for his lion and gets mad at Cabaji after he uses Richie as a shield.
  • Non-Action Guy: Mohji usually relies on Richie doing most of the fights. The only time Mohji personally clashes is when he fights against Cabaji for the position of being the new captain of the crew, after Buggy is presumed dead.
  • Whip of Dominance: He wields a whip as his weapon, fitting for him being a beast tamer, although he only used his whip as a weapon, and hasn't been shown using it to control his pet lino Richie.

"Captain Buggy, leave those small fish to me. 'Cause I can't help but feel that these days my skills are starting to rust!"
Chapter 15

Buggy's chief of staff. He's a swordsman with an acrobat theme, and fights with multiple weapons.

In the Orange Village arc, he fights Zoro and, despite playing dirty, he's ultimately defeated. During Buggy's disappearance, he fights Mohji for the title of captain but Richie beats them both.

  • Attack the Injury: During his battle with Zoro, Cabaji deliberately attacks the stab wound Zoro received from Buggy in order to weaken him. Zoro is unimpressed and ends up making the stab wound bigger himself to show him that he can still win even with a handicap, which he does.
  • Blade Across The Shoulder: In his first appearance after the time-skip he wields his large sword over the shoulder.
  • Co-Dragons: He and Mohji are Buggy's strongest and closest crewmates and when Buggy is presumed dead, they fight for the title of new captain of the crew. After Marineford, the strongest part is no longer true but they are still among the closest ones.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Cabaji is not above using tricks and kicking the wound of the enemy in a fight. Nami calls him out for his dirty way of combat.
  • Dual Wielding: Among the many weapons he has, his favorites are two swords.
  • Fragile Speedster: Cabaji is really fast on his unicycle, but gets owned in three strikes by Zoro.
  • Human Shield: He doesn't use a human, but Richie, Mohji's lion and his own ally, to protect himself from a cannonball. Mohji berates him for using his lion.
  • Improbable Weapon User: To fit his acrobat's theme, Cabaji's weaponry includes dust, spinning tops and flames shot out of his mouth.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: Cabaji keeps his coat open open, leaving his chest exposed as a sign of confidence in his skills.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Wears a large blue and white-squared scarf and is one of the crew's strongest fighters.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: His long coat doesn't have any sleeves.

Click here to see his post-Time Skip appearance

Mohji's giant lion. Despite his intimidating appearance, he acts more like a kitten and tends to think about food most of the time. He's also a bit of a coward, but that's because he's aware of the enemies who are stronger than him.

In his first appearance, he attacks a caged Luffy by Mohji's order but, once Straw Hat is freed, he's quickly defeated. During Buggy's disappearance, he becomes temporarily the new captain, but he and the crew are quickly captured by a cannibal tribe until Buggy comes and saves them.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Mohji and Cabaji fight to decide who becomes the new captain and Richie wins by knocking them both out while asleep.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: His mane is red in the manga while in the anime it's purple.
  • Big Eater: He is constantly hungry and often thinks about food. After the time-skip, he has become a bit fat, just like his master.
  • Characterization Marches On: In his debut, he acts like a ferocious giant lion. In his later appearances he seems smarter than the average lion (though still not very clever) and makes human gestures.
  • Cowardly Lion: Literally. He's a huge and ferocious lion but he's also a coward whenever he perceives danger. To be fair, he simply knows how weak he is compared to the Grand Line threats.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Once Luffy gets out of the cage, he grabs Richie, twists his own arms and slams the lion to the ground spinning him for extra damage, knocking him out.
  • Formerly Fit: He seems to have gained some weight during the time-skip, not unlike his tamer.
  • Funny Animal: Especially in his later appearances, where he acts almost like a human barring the lack of speech. In his previous appearance, he's a large ferocious animal.
  • General Failure: His career as captain of the Buggy Pirates is really short, as they are quickly captured by the Kumate Tribe, until Buggy and Alvida save them.
  • Non-Verbal Miscommunication: Being a lion, he talks with gestures, more often than not asking for food, but the other misinterpret it as if he's been moved by a sad moment.
  • Panthera Awesome: He's a giant lion, big enough to carry his master on his back, at least at the beginning.
  • The Speechless: He's a lion, therefore he can't talk. He tries to communicate with gestures but the crew often misunderstands the message.
  • Your Size May Vary: In his first appearance, Richie is the size of an elephant. Since then he has become only slightly bigger than his master Mohji.

Devil Fruit: Slip-Slip Fruit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alvida_anime.png
Click here to see her before eating the Slip-Slip Fruit

"Who's the most beautiful woman in the world?"

The lady pirate Alvida is the first enemy that Luffy faces in his travels. A grotesquely obese woman, she thinks of herself as the most beautiful woman on the seas (Eiichiro Oda stated that the one thing missing on her ship was a mirror), and would beat those who annoy her with an iron mace. Luffy incurs her wrath by calling her an old hag, but it only takes him one punch to lay her flat.

Sometime after her encounter with Luffy, she obtained and ate the Slip-Slip Fruit (Sube Sube no Mi), which transformed her from her short, fat, unsightly self into a tall, slim, and sultry woman. When people say that she's the most beautiful woman on the seas, now they really mean it. Currently she is co-captain of the Buggy Pirates.

She has a bounty of 5,000,000 Berries; however, during her time as a Warlord's associate, her bounty is null. She holds one record for her bounty: Lowest non-active, yet non-Warlord bounty.

  • Adaptation Expansion: The anime adaptation's first episode shows the Alvida Pirates raiding a civilian cruise ship with Alvida herself forcing Koby (who was already blackmailed into becoming her cabin boy) to get involved in the aforementioned raid despite Koby not having any weapon or martial arts to attack people. This does not happen in the manga.
  • Affably Evil: After her Devil Fruit transformation, she loses the mean-tempered, petty streak she's known for. She tries to strike a friendly conversation with Luffy and often serves as the voice of reason in her crew. Of course, she's still a pirate and will still use her iron mace on anyone who stands in her way.
  • Badass Longcoat: She wears a coat that indicates that she's a pirate captain. After joining the Buggy Pirates, it still visually shows her high position among the crew.
  • Bad Boss: She is some kind of perfectionist who wants everything around her to be clean and beautiful and she punishes severely henchmen who slack off. Interestingly enough, she mellows a lot after she becomes a beauty herself.
  • Berserk Button: Don't call her ugly. Doesn't matter if she's fat or fit — she'll whip out her iron mace and swing to kill.
  • Book Ends: In the anime, the East Blue Saga begins and ends with her.
  • Carry a Big Stick: She uses a large iron mace as her weapon, and can still swing it effortlessly after gaining her new slim body.
  • Cool Ship: The Miss Love Duck, formerly — getting knocked into the sky caused her crew to basically turn tail on her and run off with her ship. She now uses a much smaller heart-shaped boat not much bigger than Mihawk's Coffin Boat, that only sits a few people.
  • Delusions of Beauty: Despite being obese and ugly, Alvida considers herself the most beautiful woman of the seas and beats up anyone who disagrees with her mace. After eating the Slip-Slip fruit, however, she loses the excessive weight and the freckles, becoming as beautiful as she claims to be (in her eyes, she lost only her freckles, though).
  • Even the Girls Want Her: When she first reveals her new, beautiful, self in Loguetown, more than a few women are smitten along with the men.
  • Fat Bitch: In her first appearance, Alvida is a fat and unpleasant woman who mistreats her subordinates. In her second appearance, she has lost all of her fat thanks to the Slip-Slip Fruit and has become nicer, but remains a villainous character.
  • Formerly Fat: After eating the Slip-Slip Fruit she loses all the excess weight. She thinks, however, to have just lost her freckles because she's never seen hereself as fat.
  • Gonk: Before eating the Slip-Slip Fruit, she's short, fat, and ugly. Luffy understandably can't recognize her after her transformation.
  • Jerkass: She's vain, selfish, bad tempered woman and used to having her own way and would abandon anyone she views as dead weight, such as Buggy when he's captured by the Marines.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: While at first Alvida is very ugly, after her Devil Fruit transformation she becomes a stunning woman, to the point she's unrecognizable. Upon her arrival in Loguetown many men in the city are allured by her beauty.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Regarding her obesity, she will deny ever being so. Alvida didn't have a mirror on her first ship for a reason. Even after she eats her Devil Fruit, she says all she lost are her freckles.
  • It's All About Me: She only joins Buggy for her own goals in order to make Luffy hers and cares nothing for Buggy or his crew. When Buggy is arrested and sent to Impel Down, Alvida is more than willing to leave him to his fate and take the crew for herself.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Post-Devil Fruit. She can slide freely on the ground to move fast, and she's every bit as strong as before. Not to mention that attacks directed at her slips away easily.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Post-Devil Fruit, she's lost all of those fat and becomes much slimmer and more beautiful. Behold!
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Initially is fat but strong as well, enough to cave a guy's face in her ship with her large mace. Upon getting her new lean body, she can swing her mace just as effortlessly.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: She is based off of Awilda, a legendary female pirate who pretended to be a man in order to become a sailor and who became the leader of a pirate crew and later became queen of Denmark. It is unlikely Awilda existed.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Of a different sort than a Logia. Her Devil Fruit makes her skin "slippery smooth", effectively giving most of her body zero friction and resulting in attacks and projectiles simply sliding off harmlessly.
  • Only Sane Woman: The carnival nature of the Buggy Pirates annoys her quite a bit. Ironically, she used to be the one crazy person among a crew of only sane men, who lost it anytime she had the slightest inclination someone insulted her looks. When she became slim, she lost her Berserk Button — or at least the reason for anyone to ever push it.
  • Proud Beauty: Alvida is her beauty, not realizing that she's obese and unattractive. After eating the Slip-Slip Fruit, her pride becomes justified as she does indeed become beautiful.
  • Significant Birth Date: Her birthday is March 14th, which is beauty day. At the beginning, it's ironic, because she's anything but a beauty. Since her Devil Fruit causes her to lose her fat and freckles, she has become beautiful enough to attract every men who sees her, making it meaningful.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Even before eating her Devil Fruit Alvida seriously thinks she's the most beautiful woman in the world. She even believed she was stronger than Bartholomew Kuma when she questioned Koby between her and Kuma.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She joins Buggy in order to find Luffy in order to "make him her man". Since he's the first person to ever hit her, this may have some sadomasochistic undertones...
  • Starter Villain: Her initial appearance is in the the second chapter of the manga, immediately following the story of Luffy meeting Shanks (the Anime moves her in the first episode), meaning she's the first enemy Luffy faces since the start of his journey (not counting the Lord of the Coast, that is a sea monster). Naturally, she's also one of the easiest enemies. She becomes much stronger after eating the Slip-Slip Fruit.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's become quite the looker post-transformation and has always been very tall, standing at around 6'6" (or 198 cm) according to the Vivre Card -- One Piece Visual Dictionary.
  • Stout Strength: Before obtaining the Slip-Slip Fruit, she's pretty fat and strong enough to lift her big mace.
  • Super Sliding: Alvida acquires the Slip-Slip Fruit, making her body smooth and slippery; as a side-effect of this, when her feet are bare, she can slide along the ground (or down a ramp) at incredible speeds.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She goes from being a one-shot Starter Villain to a fairly competent threat who, lest we forget, now has Devil Fruit abilities that make her far more durable than she appears and gives her a good degree of immunity against hand-to-hand users.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In her first appearance, she's a thorough foul individual to match her physical ugliness, brutally beating her crew for the slightest perceived transgression. After she eats her Devil Fruit, not only does she become much more beautiful, but she also mellows considerably, to the point of being a Friendly Enemy to people like Luffy.
  • Villainous Crush: Seems to have a crush on Luffy. Despite this, while she shows disappointment when Buggy is about to kill him, she doesn't try to prevent him from doing so.
  • Villainous Rescue: Along with Buggy, she saves the Buggy Pirates from the Kumate Tribe.
  • Villain Team-Up: Saves Buggy and tags along with him afterwards, until she becomes part of his crew. Despite this, she cares little for Buggy, and willingly leaves him to his fate in Impel Down, but shows no problem letting him regain control of his crew once he escapes.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In the 4Kids dub, her post Devil Fruit form has the same raspy voice as her fat form.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: She eats the Slip-Slip Fruit, which makes her body slippery. The only uses her powers have shown is causing shrapnel to slip off of her, turning her from a Gonk to Ms. Fanservice, and letting her slide across the ground while barefoot. However, this is useless against Smoker's Plume-Plume Fruit powers, and she can't slip out of seastone nets.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Hotness: Before she eating the Slip-Slip Devil Fruit, Alvida was a fat and ugly woman who forced men to tell her she was beautiful. After she eats it, she loses the excessive weight and becomes a stunning beauty, though she will insist that she only lost her freckles.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Zigzagged. At first, Alvida proclaims herself the world's most beautiful woman despite being fat and grotesque. After eating the Slip-Slip Fruit, her appearance changes to the point she can at least back up that claim, with men and women falling for her at first sight. However, she is not a contender for the most beautiful woman in the world,
  • Younger Than They Look: Pre-transformation, she looks middle-aged despite being in her twenties. Post-transformation, she fits her actual age of 25 in Part 1 to 27 in Part 2, according to the Vivre Card -- One Piece Visual Dictionary anyway.

Black Cat Pirates

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/black_cat_pirates_jolly_roger.png

The former crew of Captain Kuro, now led by Jango, is composed of pirates wearing cat ears. Their purpose in Kuro's plan is to attack the village and kill Kaya, so that Kuro can get his hands on her goods, though he actually plans to get rid of them as well.

  • Animal Motifs: The crew share a cat theme, obviously. Kuro, the captain, has a pair of gloves with a long sword on each finger, and even slashes Merry simply for the thrill of it, just like real cats do. Sam and Butchie are also very similar to cats and fight with clawed gloves, while the rest of the crew wear a bandana with cat-like ears. The only exception is Jango, who doesn't have anything cat-related.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The mooks are hypnotized by Jango to become stronger to defeat Luffy and Zoro. Unfortunately for them, Luffy also falls under hypnosis and defeats them all.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": All of the crew are terrified when Kuro appears and sees that they haven't dealt with the Straw Hats yet, and then Kuro proclaims to use Nuki Ashi, a dangerous technique which lets him attack anyone around him.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Nugire Yainu was hypnotized by Jango into believing he was Kuro, which led to being killed by the Marines who thought he was Kuro.

"My plans will not fail."

Captain Kuro, also known as "Kuro of the Thousand Plans", is the captain of the Black Cat pirates from East Blue. He is cold and cunning, known for coming up with elaborate plans that never failed. His fighting skills are just as deadly as his mind, as he can move silently at incredible speeds to slaughter people in the blink of an eye. Yet despite all of this, he eventually tired of the pirate life, setting up schemes for his crewmates, and of constantly being hunted down by the Marines. He hypnotized the crew's shipwright, Nugire Yainu, into believing he was Kuro and allowed him to be executed in his place, stopping the Marine hunt and allowing him to leave his crew.

Making his new home in Syrup Village, he became Klahadore, the butler for Kaya. From there, he plotted to assassinate Kaya to obtain her vast fortunes and completely retire from his pirate life. However, Luffy and his allies, along with town liar Usopp, put a stop to his plans.

His former bounty was 16,000,000 Berries.

  • Arc Villain: Kuro is the main villain of Usopp's introduction arc, where he plans to kill Kaya, Usopp's friend, to inherit her fortune. He also poses as a contrast to Usopp and his lies.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Downplayed. On one hand, his Shakushi form is as fast as Soru, but he can't control it and ends up killing his own men. But on the other hand, he's a Bad Boss who intended to erase his crew anyway, so Shakushi's only drawback is that his crew being in the way hinders his effectiveness against Luffy.
  • Badass Bookworm: Oda says he's the second smartest person to appear in the East Blue arc, right behind Ben Beckman, and is renowed for his complex plans.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Apart from a design on his suit that apparently represents some feces, as if to say that he, a liar, is full of shit, he's dressed rather well. Justified because he plays the role of a butler.
  • Bad Boss: When his plans start to fail, he threatens to kill his crew if they don't hurry up, and later reveals that he always planned to kill them all once his objective was achieved as a way of protecting his identity. He even indiscriminately cuts them down during one of his attacks, and dialogue from some of his crew members indicates that this behavior is quite common for him.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: He reminisces about all the years he spent as Kaya's butler... then concludes by saying how he hated that time.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He pretends to be a kind and caring butler and Parental Substitute to Kaya, when in reality he's played that role to gets Kaya's affection and inherit her mansion after killing her, and then he would kill his former but still loyal crew because they know his true identity. While revealing his true colors, Kuro flat-out tells Kaya that he "endured" the role and hated every second with her, while the ONE thing that was been entirely honest was his hatred of Ussop.
  • Breaking Speech: He gives a long speech to Kaya about how he hated serving and taking care of her over the years, and that it was all to get his hands on her fortune. It completely breaks the poor girl, who considered Klahadore like a second father.
  • Brutal Honesty: Outright admits that does not have an "ounce" affection for Kaya and was simply a pawn for his master plan, and only after her death will give his proper thanks.
  • The Butler Did It: Subverted. While Kuro faked his identity and planned to murder Kaya for her family fortune, he makes it clear to Jango that he had nothing to do with the death of Kaya's parents. Given he's confiding this to Jango, it's probably safe to assume he's being honest.
  • Character Tic: He tends to adjust his glasses with the palm of his hand. According to Jango, Kuro picked up this habit as a result of wearing his clawed gloves all the time and not wanting to cut himself; his continued use of the gesture after three years of dormancy is a clue to Jango and the others that their captain hasn't gotten the slightest bit rusty in all that time.
  • The Chessmaster: His plans for Kaya's fortune aside, he is infamous for organizing over a thousand meticulously planned pillaging raids.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Made most obvious when he's plotting to kill an innocent young woman to collect her wealth so he can escape from the Marines. He's also willing to kill his own crew to keep his identity a secret, though later dialogue from Usopp confirms he plans to kill at least some of them regardless.
  • Consummate Liar: Given he has lived with Kaya for three years, hating it the entire time, and everyone still was none the wiser about him, he's definitely adept to tell lies. In contrast to Usopp's obvious ones, Kuro's lies are more subtle.
  • Cruelty by Feet: After attacking the Marine ship in a flashback, Kuro steps on the injured Morgan's face, breaking his jaw in the process.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Luffy points out that, ironically, Kuro's initial decision to take up piracy wasn't well thought-out. When Kuro complains how his career as a pirate meant the Marines would always come after him, Luffy rightly points out this is something he should've thought about before he decided to become a pirate in the first place.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: He's willing to massacre his entire crew, just for calling him by his name (both his original name Kuro and his alias Klahadore), because he's that evil and violent.
  • Dodge the Bullet: In the anime, Kuro uses his Super-Speed to dodge some bullets when Usopp tries to shoot at him with Kaya's gun.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": He gets angry when his crewmen cheer for him by his original name, since his goal is to get rid of that name.
  • Dramatic Irony: The pirate Captain that wants to be free of piracy and the stress the lifestyle inherently has, came up with a master plan that involved starting a new life with a job that had almost that amount of freedom and level of luxury built-in. However doing so involved having his crew be privy to the knowledge, so they are loose ends he implies he has to clean up too, which makes the situation the very thing he was afraid would happen to him.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In Germany, Captain Kuro is called "Käpt'n Black", while "Klahadore" became "Beauregard".
    • His Shakushi technique is called the "Out of the Bag Attack" in English dubs.
  • Evil Genius: Kuro is one of the smartest characters in One Piece, able to make a long plan to inherit a mansion, and also one of the most despicable.
  • Evil Wears Black: Kuro's main color scheme is black, given by his butler suit, which is a visual hints of his true, evil, nature when he's first introduced.
  • Faking the Dead: He left his crew by hypnotizing Nugire Yainu into believing that he was Kuro and let him be captured by Morgans so that he could plot in peace.
  • Faux Affably Evil: On top of his completely fake polite demeanor when acting as a butler, he also acts very laid-back and almost friendly with Butchie and Siam when they try to attack him. He evades their attacks and proceeds to puts his now-gloved hands over their shoulders like he's being buddy-buddy with them. This, along with his threats understandably unnerves the two of them.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Kaya's family saved Kuro's life and gave him a house, and his way of repaying Kaya is to kill her and inherit her fortune.
  • Flash Step: Shakushi is as fast as CP9's Soru, but is an imperfect form; unlike them, he can't see where he's going. Not that he cares if everything and everyone in his way dies.
  • Foil: Kuro contrasts Usopp, as they are, respectively, the main antagonist and principal allies of the Syrup arc. Both are big liars but Usopp's lies are more evident and, more specifically, he tells fake stories to Kaya to entertain her, while Kuro has been lying for years to Kaya's family without being spotted and has much more malicious intent behind his lies.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Kuro has a pair of glasses he constantly adjusts with the palm of his hands and has never grown to love his supposed master after three years and doesn't care the slightest for his crew.
  • Fragile Speedster: He's as fast as any Soru user, to the point no one can see his movements, but goes down after a single headbutt.
  • Good Hair, Evil Hair: His slicked hair signifies his refined-yet-cunning demeanor quite well.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: After showing his true colors to Kaya, the girl he served for years, Kuro reveals that he actually hated every second of it.
  • Ironic Hell: All of his plans are an effort to escape a life of piracy, but after being defeated by Luffy he seemingly returns to his old pirate career.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Under the identity of Klahadore, he comes off as a stern servant who cares about Kaya and acts like a jerk to Usopp, but his heart of gold is a façade and he does not care about Kaya. Though by his own admission the hatred of Usopp is entirely genuine.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: One katana isn't enough. Try ten, one on each gloved finger.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Klahadore insults Usopp's for being the son of a pirate who abandoned him, even going so far as to suggest him a new lie about Usopp being related to his father, which pushes Usopp's Berserk Button who would never deny to be related to a pirate man.
    • Breaks the glasses Kaya has given to him as a gift shortly before almost killing Merry. He also tells Kaya that he hated all the time he spent with her.
  • Knight of Cerebus: While the early villains of One Piece are laughably over-the-top and pretty easy to defeat, Kuro is the first villain to act completely seriously, with no Wild Takes whatsoever. He isn't above killing his own crew (he was even going to do it if his plan succeeded), he badly wounds Kaya's servant, and he went to great lengths to manipulate and kill a sick girl so he can obtain an inheritance.
  • Lack of Empathy: While working for Kaya and her family for three years, he has never grown attached to her nor to his colleague Merry, and even attempts to kill the latter without any regret. He doesn't even care for his crew, which he plans to kill after inheriting Kaya's fortune.
  • Lean and Mean: He's very slim and doesn't even care about his own men.
  • Leave No Witnesses: If his plan had succeeded, he would've killed his crew just to make sure that there wouldn't be anyone left who knows he's still alive.
  • Lunacy: The crescent moon increases his bloodlust, which is why he attacks Merry the night before the execution of his plan. In the past, the night he thought Morgan's ship, it was also a crescent moon night, which is why he was so especially brutal during the fight. The brief shot of him in the first opening of the anime also has a red crescent moon in the background.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He served Kaya and took care of her, almost like a father figure, only in the hopes of inheriting her fortune.
  • Not Me This Time: When Jango says that Kuro must have killed Kaya's parents, Kuro replies their deaths actually were entirely natural.
  • Obviously Evil: He wears all black, has Scary Shiny Glasses, and is an arrogant jerk towards Usopp. And that is before being revealed as the main villain of the arc.
  • One-Man Army: He single-handedly slaughtered the entire crew of a Marine ship in the past. He also plans to kill every member of his own crew to fully detach himself from his past
  • Perpetual Frowner: Rarely does he ever crack a smile. When he does smile, expect it to be either a Slasher Smile or purely insincere.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Kuro has not lost his edge after 3 years of inactivity and is still far stronger than the rest of his crew.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Addressed when he Flash Steps; he moves so fast that he can't tell where he's going or who he's attacking, making him a danger to both his enemies and his own allies. Of course, this weakness is counteracted by the fact that he doesn't really care if he cuts down his own men anyway.
  • Retired Monster: Fully intended to retire from being a pirate, and to some extent did. Played with, as he's still performing an Evil Plan during that time, but fully intends to completely retire afterwards. In any case, he has no Heel Realization or remorse for his evil, he was simply tired of his life as a pirate.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Underneath the moonlight, as he tells about how it brings out the animal in him.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Kuro is a cold, calculating pirate who makes complicated plans that never fails, and one of his distinctive accessories is a pair of glasses, which he adjusts with the palm of the hand.
  • Smug Snake: His plan "that could not fail" not only fails, but gets him exactly what he doesn't want in the end: he's a wanted pirate again.
  • The Sociopath: Exceedingly self-centered, views his crew as expendable, views people in general as pawns to be manipulated to suit his own ends, and unbelievably cruel.
  • This Cannot Be!: He completely loses his shit and panics when Luffy gets the upper hand about them, screaming at the despair of his precious plan failing.
Kuro: My plan...My plan...My plan cannot fail!!!
  • Too Clever by Half: For all of his exceptional intelligence, Kuro's stubborn belief in the brilliance and guaranteed success of his plan helps lead him to his ultimate failure at gaining a luxurious, peaceful life. Had he been a bit more flexible and willing to swallow his pride, he could have made much better use of his relationship to Kaya and his good reputation around Syrup Village.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: Kuro is one of the most mundane-looking characters in the series, which makes the reveal that he's actually a ruthless pirate much more surprising.
  • Upper-Class Twit: Gives off this impression with the identity of Klahadore, as he doesn't give Usopp or the Straw Hats the time of day and claims he's busy with his work at the mansion. In truth, he's pirate who plans to kill Kaya and inherit her money.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Despite his collected and smug behavior through almost all of the arc, Kuro gets completely desperate when Luffy's victory becomes obvious, shouting hysterically how his plans simply cannot fail.
  • Visual Pun: His uniform has the image of a pair of golden excrements which are a pun on the term "bullshit" since for all these years Kuro, under the alias of Klahadore, has been telling nothing but lies.
  • Wolverine Claws: His gloves have katanas on each of the fingers and can cut through stone.
  • The Worf Barrage: He goes into a berserk rage and attempts to kill everyone in sight. All he manages to do is butcher most of his crew and wound up getting his ass kicked by Luffy.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He has no issues with ordering Jango to kill the Usopp pirates and would likely have done the deed himself if he didn't think killing Luffy was a higher priority at the time.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He's totally prepared to kill Kaya; when she tells him that she would have just given him the money, he politely informs her that his plan requires he inherits it from her, so she has to die.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Luffy manages to break the blades of his right hand during their fight.
  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: When Kaya comes to confront him and points a gun at him, Kuro isn't impressed at all as he knows she's too much of a Nice Girl to pull the trigger. He's right.

"Give it to him, Siam!"

One of the strongest fighters of the Black Cat Pirates, and with Siam he forms the Nyaban Brothers. They both fight with a pair of clawed gloves, resembling the claws of a cat. He's the tough one of the duo, as he lasts longer than Siam and is physically stronger.

His bounty is 7,000,000 along with Siam.

  • Acrofatic: He is very fast and nimble despite his mass.
  • Badass Cape: Arguably the physically strongest of the Black Cat Pirates besides the captain, and wears a cape to show it.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Once Siam is defeated, Jango hypnotizes him to make him much stronger.
  • The Brute: He's the largest, dumbest, and physically strongest of their crew.
  • Cats Are Mean: He's a member of an evil pirate crew with a cat theme.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Even before being put under hypnosis, his stomps can easily cracks the earth open.
  • Dual Boss: He and Siam fight together against Zoro, but the "duo" doesn't last long. Once Zoro gets all three of his swords, Siam goes down in one hit and Butchie has to fight solo.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's the stronger of the Nyaban Brothers duo, but Siam is clearly the brains between the two.
  • Family of Choice: The sixth databook reveals that Siam and him aren't related by blood and met as pirates, though they genuinely see each other as brothers.
  • Gonk: He's a fat, goofy pirate.
  • Ground Pound: The usual technique is that Siam blocks the enemy so that Butchie can stomp on him with a drop kick.
  • Hulking Out: After Siam is defeated and Butchie resists Zoro's attack, Jango hypnotizes Butchie to make him stronger and he becomes much more muscular. It doesn't help him against Zoro.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: After he's hypnotized, his eyes become completely white.
  • Oh, Crap!: During the fight with Zoro, he and Siam are paralyzed with fear at the sight of their captain.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Either Butchie or Buchi.
  • Stout Strength: It's made clear since the beginning that he's very strong but, once he's hypnotized, he reveals he has quite a set of muscles under his fat.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Doesn't wear any kind of clothes to cover the upper part of his body.
  • Wolverine Claws: He has a pair of gloved claws, resembling those of a cat.

"Let's do it, Butchie!"

One of the strongest fighters of the Black Cat Pirates, and with Butchie he forms the Nyaban Brothers. They both fight with a pair of clawed gloves, resembling the claws of a cat. He's the quick one of the duo, but also the more frail as he goes down first.

His bounty is 7,000,000 along with Butchie.

  • Anime Hair: Some years before the events of the Syrup Village arc, he used to have his hair shaped into a spiral antennae. His current hairstyle is still weird, but not as much as before.
  • Cats Are Mean: Following his crew's theme, his appearance and fighting style are based off of a cat and he's a dirty fighter.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Fools Zoro into believing he's afraid to fight, only to catch him off guard and steal two of his swords.
  • Cowardly Lion: Subverted. When Jango orders him to attack Zoro, Siam dashes toward him screaming how he's afraid, only to reveal this is all an act to make Zoro underestimate him.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: At first he seems a cowardly idiot, but he's actually a pragmatic fighter. Still not badass enough to be a threat to Zoro.
  • Dual Boss: He and Butchie fight together against Zoro, but the "duo" part doesn't last long. Once Zoro gets all three of his swords, Siam goes down in one hit.
  • Family of Choice: The sixth databook reveals that Butchie and him aren't related by blood and met as pirates, though they genuinely see each other as brothers.
  • Fragile Speedster: He's the swift one of the Nyaban Brothers but also the one who goes down more easily.
  • Gonk: Has a weird cat-like face and a hump.
  • Lean and Mean: He wears large clothes to dissimulate his thinness. This saves him from an Zoro's first attack.
  • Oh, Crap!: During the fight with Zoro, he and Butchie are paralyzed with fear at the sight of their captain.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Either Siam or Sham.
  • Wolverine Claws: He has a pair of gloved claws, resembling those of a cat.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krieg_pirates_jolly_roger.png

The most numerous and strongest pirate crew of East Blue, composed of fifty warships. Their attempt to conquer the Grand Line was crushed by Mihawk, who destroyed the whole fleet save one ship by himself. They manage to beat the Baratie cooks by sheer numbers but are easily bested by Sanji and Luffy.

  • Berserk Button: The crew is pissed when Luffy doubts their reputation stating that they're just the most numerous crew in the East Blue, not the strongest.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Some crew members are shocked that Krieg is willing to kill Gin without remorse, even though he has always been his most loyal henchman.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Once the most powerful crew in East Blue, by the time they actually appear they are malnourished and severely reduced in size, their maiden journey into the Grand Line having ended in failure after one week. The Baratie arc sees them sink even further, with their last remaining ship being destroyed by Mihawk and their attempt to seize the titular restaurant foiled by Luffy, Sanji, and the Baratie cooks. They're ultimately forced to flee the Baratie with only a mere rowboat to their names, more-or-less ending any hope of them once again becoming a serious threat.
  • Informed Ability: Justified. It's supposedly a fleet of fifty ships but only one appears. This is because there used to be fifty ships but Mihawk took them all down save for one, the flagship, the Dreadnought Sabre, which barely got away and suffered a ton of gashes in the process. Only for Mihawk, who followed them, to show up and wreck that one too.
  • Lifesaving Misfortune: One of the reasons why they return to East Blue is because their flagship got caught in a malicious Grand Line storm... which saved it and the men sailing it from being sliced to pieces by Dracule Mihawk, like the other forty-nine ships in Krieg's fleet.
  • Mooks: It used to be an entire fleet composed of fifty ships and five thousand men which, while strong by East Blue standard, are just thousands to use for target practice for someone like Dracule Mihawk. Unfortunately for them, they had the bad luck to run into a bored Mihawk during their first week on the Grand Line, who promptly destroys the armada because he had nothing else to do and they happened to be there. By the time the crew appears in the story proper, it's already been decimated to a mere one hundred men and a barely intact ship, and the ship is destroyed not long after.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Both in numbers and in actual ability. While in East Blue and the earlier parts of Paradise five thousand pirates is nothing to scoff at, in the New World the Four Emperors have crews several times that size, with soldiers that are magnitudes stronger than the fodder in Krieg's armada. That's not even accounting for the possibility of running into someone who could take on an armada of that size on their own, which is what happened to them when they had the misfortune of meeting a bored Dracule Mihawk, looking to kill time.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Downplayed, especially compared to their captain, but they still think they're still the strongest pirate crew in the East Blue after the Grand Line ripped them to shreds and left them a tiny fraction of what they once where. They weren't even the strongest pirate crew in the eastern seas before they went into the Grand Line — that honor actually belonged to the Arlong Pirates, a group of Fish-men whose strength is well beyond anyone native to the East Blue, and whose captain actually had a higher bounty than Krieg (and honestly deserved an even higher bounty than the one he actually had). The only reason the two groups never come into conflict is because Arlong is actively trying to keep a low profile.
  • Unluckily Lucky: Running into a bored Dracule Mihawk during your first week on the Grand Line is some of the worst luck ever seen in the series. Luckily for the Krieg Pirates, before Mihawk destroyed their last ship, they got caught up in a storm that allowed them to briefly escape him. Even after he catches up with them at the Baratie and destroys said ship, he quickly loses interest in them due to meeting Zoro, which unquestionably saves their lives.
  • The Worf Effect: Being the (self-proclaimed) strongest crew in East Blue, with fifty ships and five thousand men, they establish an effective baseline for East Blue's overall strength. Therefore, Mihawk crushing the entire fleet without breaking a sweat shows how vastly beneath East Blue is compared to the strength of the Grand Line.
  • Zerg Rush: The main strategy for the crew is to take advantage of their numbers to achieve victory. Luffy calls them out on this and dismisses the idea of them being a legitimately strong crew.

"I'm the strongest! This steel arm, more powerful than that of anyone! This body of steel, tougher than anyone else's! And this diamond fist that can pulverize anything! My entire body is a finely tuned weapon! I'm the fleet admiral of 50 ships and the commander of 5000 men! I've won every single battle I've been in! There is no other man more worthy of the title "Don" than I am!"
Chapter 47

Don Krieg is the admiral of the Pirate Armada, crew with a fleet of fifty battleships that lurked within the East Blue. Krieg himself is well known for his trickery and underhanded tactics, and is supremely confident in the weapons of his overwhelming arsenal.

His bounty is 17,000,000 Berries.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Subverted. When he arrives at the Baratie after starving for days, Krieg bends to the floor asking for food for he and his crew, while his second-in-command Gin says he doesn't have to humiliate himself this much. Immediately after, Krieg gets up and threatens the cooks with his weaponry.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Krieg had the strongest and most feared fleet in East Blue. But as he soon finds out, he's nothing compared to Pirates from the Grand Line. Then we learn that the East Blue is actually the weakest of the four Blues, meaning he's the strongest person in the weakest quadrant of the world. Krieg and his crew had the misfortune of running into Mihawk on a day when he was in a ship-sinking mood, and Krieg suddenly found himself without an armada.
  • Arc Villain: He's the main antagonist of Sanji's introduction arc.
  • Armored Villains, Unarmored Heroes: Krieg wears a strong armor that covers him from neck to toe, while his opponent Luffy only has the clothes on his back. A good part of their fight revolves around Luffy trying a way to break his armor.
  • Badass Boast: While threatening the Baratie cooks, Krieg boasts about his armor, the arsenal inside and the fame of his powerful army.
  • Bad Boss: He's not above killing members of his crew on the spot if they disagree with him. Even Gin gets this treatment when he can't bring himself to kill Sanji and suggests withdrawing.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He fancies himself a Warlord-level threat and is convinced that his fleet is more than enough to allow him to wipe out anything that might oppose him. On a less-dangerous stretch of ocean, this might be true. On the Grand Line, he is completely outclassed, and his encounter with an actual Warlord proves how utterly wrong he was. If Mihawk hadn't regarded him as a mere annoyance or had taken him up on his challenges to fight, he would have been a dead man.
  • Bling-Bling-BANG!: His Wootz steel armor is gilded gold.
  • Bowdlerize: The infamous "poison suction cups" in the 4Kids dub.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Even after seeing Dracule Mihawk wipe out his entire armada and defeat the renowned swordsman Roronoa Zoro without breaking a sweat, Krieg still thinks it's a good idea to try to pick a fight with him. He's certainly lucky that Mihawk has so little interest in him that he chooses to leave rather than waste his time killing him.
  • Calling Your Attacks: One of the few characters in One Piece who does not. Considering he is known for sneak attacks and deception, this is probably meant to be a character note.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: When you can swing a weapon that weighs a ton with only one arm with ease... yeah, he definitely has this.
  • Combat Pragmatist: As his Red Baron attest, Don Krieg believes that nothing is too dirty a trick if victory is an option. He uses his numerous crew to achieve victory and in fights Krieg uses a large arsenal of weapons, including a deadly gas to fight Luffy after it's clear he cannot win in a fair fight.
  • Deadly Gas: His most dangerous weapon is a poison gas called MH-5 that is powerful enough to decimate the population of an entire village.
  • Determinator: Even after being beaten by Luffy, Krieg remains standing and his crew believes he's still conscious.
  • Epic Flail: He uses a huge spiked ball attached to a chain against Luffy at one point.
  • Expy: Don Krieg's hairstyle and the armor he wears make him very similar to Raoh, especially in his first outfit, with whom he shares a very authoritarian and Social Darwinist mindset as well. Unlike Raoh, however, Don Krieg lacks any redeemable traits and is far from one of the strongest fighters of his own verse.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Krieg was left starving after Mihawk wiped out his fleet, and most of the chefs of the Baratie had every intention of leaving him to die. Over everyone's protests, Sanji takes pity on him and feeds him. As soon as he feels satiated, Krieg beats Sanji up.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: His arsenal includes a flamethrower mounted on his wrist.
  • Guns Akimbo: He often uses a pistols in each hands along with two mini-cannons over both shoulders and three on each of his flanks.
  • Hate Sink: While not one of the most monstrous villains to appear, he is a really detestable blowhard without redeemable character traits. He is a Small Name, Big Ego who is completely blind to how weak he really is even after Mihawk wipes out his entire fleet singlehandedly, he attacks the people who saved his life the moment he has his strength back just for the hell of it and plans to rob them blind, is a Bad Boss that treats his own crew as disposable, relies on dirty tricks when he realizes he can't win in a straight fight, and is a huge Sore Loser who refuses to understand when he's been beaten.
  • Hot-Blooded Sideburns: He has a very short temper and posses two large sideburns, emphasizing his manly appearance.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Don Krieg was renowned as the strongest pirate in East Blue, with a force of fifty ships and five thousand men at his command. One week in the Grand Line and a run-in with Dracule Mihawk later, he runs all the way back to East Blue with his tail between his legs, his once-powerful armada reduced to one hundred starving men and a barely intact ship (which is subsequently sliced to pieces by Mihawk). Then he gets his ass kicked by Luffy and is sent packing from the Baratie on a rowboat, destroying any and all illusions of his supposed invincibility.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: His suit of armor has way too many weapons to work and turns him into a living weaponry. It has several automatic machine guns, a flamethrower, a net shooter, a flail, bombs, a Gatling gun mounted in a shield which shoots spikes, a poison gas launcher in the same shield and the shoulder pads can become a spear.
  • Inescapable Net: His last-ditch attack on Luffy is to trap him inside an iron net and then toss him into the sea.
  • Insane Troll Logic: He never lets up on his assumption that his biggest advantage over Luffy is that Devil Fruit makes you unable to swim. As if swimming in plate armor would be much easier. This becomes even more ludicrous in later arcs, where a pirate captain like him without Devil Fruit powers would be in a dwindling minority.
  • Jerkass: Don Krieg is an arrogant man with a big ego who uses dirty tricks to achieve victory and, after Zeff prepares food for him and his famished crew, Don Krieg doesn't have two thoughts when immediately afterwards he orders his crew to conquer the Baratie.
  • Kick the Dog: When Gin decides to show mercy to Sanji, Krieg poisons him without any regret, despite Gin being his right-hand man.
  • Meaningful Name: Krieg means "war" in German, which fits with Don Krieg's militaristic theme and appearance.
  • Miles Gloriosus: From his weapons to the size of his crew, Krieg values excess above all else. He's not actually as strong as he'd like to believe, however.
  • More Dakka: He has a total of 14 gun barrels on him.
  • Never My Fault: Krieg's biggest character flaw is his inability to take responsibility for his own failures. Krieg will blame anyone and anything but his own overconfidence for the outcome of his journey to the Grand Line.
  • Offing the Annoyance: He shoots two of his own men when they try to talk him out of returning to Grand Line.
  • Over Nine Thousand: His unused cyborg form was literally called Don Krieg 9000.
  • Powered Armor: A borderline case, at the very least. Aside from being pretty durable, his armor also has varieties of hidden guns inside them when he decides he needs More Dakka. Its shoulder pads can also be detached and used either as a shield that rapid-fires big stakes and launches poison gas bombs or combined into a spear that causes explosions on impact.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Despite the way he treats his crew, he still nonetheless feeds them, so they can have the strength to fight, since he relies on his crew's numbers.
  • Precision F-Strike: In the Funimation dub, Don Krieg's reaction to Mihawk returning to attack his group again is a very sour, "That son of a bitch." You don't hear "SOB" used very much in the dub.
  • Shoulder Cannon: He has a pair of mini-cannons above both shoulders.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: So much so that he got his ass thoroughly kicked by Mihawk and still thinks he's the greatest thing ever. His overconfidence likely comes from him having the strongest fleet on the East Blue (even though he didn't have the highest bounty there at the time — that honor belonged to Arlong). Too bad he doesn't realize that on the Grand Line he's target practice. In fact, he's not even the strongest member of his own crew, with his mistreated but inexplicably loyal second in command Gin being stronger.
  • Smug Snake: He thinks he's some sort of military paragon; in reality, he's little more than a bully who gets by with his reputation and falls flat versus anyone who actually decides to call his bluff.
  • Sore Loser: Take some popcorn, sit down, and admire his hammy rant against Luffy.
  • Spikes of Doom: He has a cape covered with spikes to prevent his enemies from hitting him. However, Luffy doesn't hesitate to punch him anyway.
  • Stupid Evil: One of the premiere examples of the series. Most of his arc would have never occurred if he hadn't decided to terrorize the staff of the Baratie just to be a dick, and he probably would have kept far more of his crew if he hadn't decided to continue to go after Mihawk just to save his wounded pride even after it was made very clear that Mihawk was lightyears above him.
  • That Wasn't a Request: When the Baratie's cooks tell him they refuse to prepare food for his crew, Krieg angrily declares that it was not a request, but an order.
  • Ungrateful Bastard:
    • His reaction to being given the food he needs to stave off imminent starvation? Punch out the specific cook that gave it to him. For absolutely no reason. After he vowed specifically that he wouldn't cause any trouble once he got it.
    • He also shows little gratitude for Gin's service, ordering him to throw his mask away and die in the poison gas bombardment after Gin asks Krieg to spare the Baratie.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Luffy defeats him, he goes nuts, screaming like a maniac and yells he'll keep killing until victory is his, before getting knocked unconscious.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: He considers sympathy to your enemy and fighting honorably as signs of weakness and is willing to kill anyone in his crew for showing it.
  • Walking Armory: His suit is filled with weapons, from pop out gun barrels to poison gas weapons, to stake guns, to a giant war spear. The guy might be a lot more egotistical than his power level warrants, but give the credit, he came pretty well armed!
  • We Have Reserves: Krieg is not terribly bothered by having lost almost all of his crew in one fell swoop, as he regards them as easily replaceable dregs whose place can be filled by anyone else.
  • World's Strongest Man: Declares himself this. He is tough, as mentioned above, but he's not even remotely close to this. The real title keeper was Whitebeard till his death.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Luffy manages to break the point of his battle spear during their fight, much to his surprise.
  • You Have Failed Me: Krieg does this to Gin.
  • You Monster!: His use of a poison gas weapon causes everyone including his own crew to say this especially given he intentionally tried to kill his most loyal crewman.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gin_anime.png

The Combat Commander for the Pirate Armada and Don Krieg's right-hand man. Befriended by Sanji.

His bounty is 12,000,000 Berries

  • Ambiguously Brown: He has both brown skin and thick lips for some reason. His origins are never explained as well.
  • Badass Normal: Not having any special ability or Devil Fruit power, yet he's strong enough to lift weighted tonfas and spin them like a helicopter, break through Pearl's armor, and knock out his boss with a single punch and effortlessly lift him.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Sanji gave him food when he was starving to death. He was so grateful, he begged Krieg to spare him; just him.
  • Blood Knight: Gin is called "Kijin" because he's very ruthless and shows no mercy...except to Sanji, who was nice to him.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: They seem to emphasize how dangerous he is. Alternatively, they're from the hunger and fatigue.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: In the anime, after his attempt to threaten Baratie’s chefs into feeding him results in him being beaten up, publicly humiliated and thrown out to starve, he's initially reluctant to accept the meal that Sanji cooks for him anyway. Sanji soon managed to talk him into it. In the manga, he immediately accepts the meal.
  • The Dragon: He serves as this to Don Krieg.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: It turns out that he's stronger than Krieg; his intense loyalty to his captain just kept him from realizing it.
  • Dual Wielding: He fights with a pair of large tonfas.
  • Foreshadowing: He takes out seven marine officers, singlehandedly and unarmed, after having been starving to death for at least 4 days. After he's got a good meal in him, he becomes one of the toughest enemies in the series at that point.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He's never shown anyone mercy in his entire life. After Sanji saved him from starving to death, he does so for the very first time.
  • Long Bus Trip: He hasn't made another appearance in nearly 20 years, not even in cover stories where characters like Mr. 9 made reappearances.
  • Made of Iron: Somehow managed to survived the MH-5 gas attack.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Even if Krieg attempted to poison him, in the end he still shows his loyalty towards Krieg.
  • Noble Top Enforcer: Despite being Krieg's second-in-command, he's far more honorable and virtuous than his captain.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: He claims that the reason he stopped Pearl from killing Sanji was because he would rather kill him himself. However, it turns out that he actually can't bring himself to do it.
  • Ordered to Die: He's ordered to throw away his gas mask for asking Krieg to spare Sanji, and he obediently complies.
  • Over-the-Shoulder Carry: After knocking out Krieg with a punch, Gin carries him away on his shoulder.
  • Red Baron: His epithet is "Demon Man".
  • Spell My Name With An S: Both English dubs spell his name as "Ghin". It's unclear if this is a form of censorship to avoid associating him with the alcoholic drink or to make the spelling of his name better reflect its pronunciation (which is indeed pronounced with a hard g).
  • Token Good Teammate: He's the only member of Krieg's armada to actually feel bad about attacking the cooks who gave them food.
  • Uncertain Doom: He gets exposed to Krieg's Deadly Gas because he throws one of two gas masks to Luffy and forces Sanji to wear the other. After Krieg's defeat, he admits that probably only has a few hours left, but his fate is unknown. He is one of the few significant characters who do not appear in the post-timeskip cover page series. The closest hint to him being alive is that the sixth databook gives him a post-timeskip age.
  • Underestimating Badassery: The Baratie's chefs dispatches him without much trouble, leading them to believe he's just some random flunky. They fail to realize that this was simply Gin on death's door. Once he's back from the brink, he's easily the strongest man on Krieg's crew.
  • We Will Meet Again: Before he leaves the Baratie, he tells Sanji to tell Luffy that he wishes to see him on the Grand Line.

"Haaahahaha! Behold! My invincible iron wall!'"''
Chapter 54

The commander of the Pirate Armada's second unit. He considers his defenses, made by multiple shields covering all of his body, impossible to pierce and the moment someone manages to hit him, he sets himself on fire.

  • Blood Upgrade: The moment Luffy (accidentally) manages to get past his defenses and make him bleed, Pearl sets his shields on fire and goes berserk, to the point he almost defeats Sanji.
  • The Brute: Pearl serves as the muscle (and the wall) of the crew, possessing high defense and, if enraged, can set things on fire.
  • Butterface: Inverted - he's got a handsome face (which he's very proud of) atop a round, oddly-proportioned body.
  • Family-Unfriendly Violence: After setting his shields on fire, Pearl gives Sanji a very nasty beatdown.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: He's totally covered in shields with nasty steel bulges in the middle, which he uses as weapons.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is Pearl and his design has a lot of pearls: each of his shields has a pearl in the center, he wears pearl-shaped headgear and has pearl earrings.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: He's so confident of his defense that, the moment he bleeds, he feels in danger and bursts into flames while setting everything, including his own crewmates, on fire. And the more he's hit, the more fire he releases.
  • Raised by Wolves: According to Krieg, he found Pearl living in the jungle with wild animals. Because of this, he reverts to a more bestial state whenever he feels threatened.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He believes to be invincible, strong, handsome and cool, and while he's certainly far from weak, he's pretty much outclassed by many stronger pirates.
  • Surfer Dude: Talks like this in the 4Kids dub.
  • Tempting Fate: While blocking Sanji's kicks, Pearl boasts that he has never lost a drop of blood in any of his fights right before Luffy accidentally hits him from behind and smashes his face against his own shield, making him bleed from the nose.
  • The Worf Effect: He establishes himself as a powerful fighter by taking out Patty and Carne with ease. He's later on the receiving end of this trope when Gin proves how strong he is by beating him with one blow.
  • Wreathed in Flames: When he bleeds, Pearl covers his shields with strange white flames and tosses fiery bullets all around him. According to his crewmates, it's a defense tactic he learned while growing up in the jungle.
