This is the list for the characters appearing in the Wattpad story, Intertwined. For the cameo characters that would appear later in the sequel, see here.
Main Characters
The main characters of Intertwined are three boys and three girls who wind up becoming friends by chance. Although relucant at first, they come to love each other like family and stand up for each other no matter what.

- Evelyn gets to school in her dad's car, she reassures him she'll be okay and waves him goodbye. When she steps inside, she's greeted and complimented by a few of her male classmates, to which she responds back just as nicely.
- The first substantial thing that Jordan does is stand up for Evelyn fiercely against three bullies, then she shares a heartfelt moment with the latter.
- Mara starts her day with anxiety over the fighting in her home. She leaves without breakfast again and when she gets to school, she's alone and resorts to observing others out of desperation.
- Matt starts his morning by waking up early to write on his computer, and he responds to school time approaching with a sarcastic comment.
- In contrast to Matt, Mike cheerfully wakes up, gets ready and goes early to school as he's looking forward to another day there.
- Eliza comes off shy at first, then she happily greets all her new classmates.
- Four-Girl Ensemble: Evelyn is the Wide-Eyed Idealist, Jordan has a Really Gets Around history, Mara is the Deadpan Snarker and Eliza is The Smart Girl.
- Four-Philosophy Ensemble: Matthew is the cynic. Mike and Evelyn are the optimists. Asher, Jordan (who can counts as the apathetic when she was a Big Bad) and Eliza are the realists, and Mara is the conflicted and a slight cynic.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Asher and Jordan are Choleric, Evelyn and Mike are Sanguine, Mara and Eliza are Phlegmatic and Matt is Melancholic.
- Freudian Trio:
- Asher is the Id, Mike is the Ego and Matt is the Superego.

- Gender-Equal Ensemble: Defied when Eliza joins.
- Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: Evelyn, Mike, Asher and Eliza vs Matt, Jordan and Mara.
- Kid Hero: They're all sixteen. It was revealed that, by months, the oldest is Matt then Asher. Mike, Evelyn and Jordan were all born in September (days unspecified) and finally, Mara is the youngest. Eliza's birthday is currently unknown.
- Limited Social Circle: Naturally, they're never seen around anyone else most of the time.
- Nice Mean And In Between:
- Mike, Matt and Asher.
- Mara/Eliza, Jordan and Evelyn.
- Platonic Life-Partners:
- Asher with all girls except Eliza.
- Evelyn with all boys except Matt.
- Eliza with all boys.
- Jordan with all boys.
- Mara with all boys except Mike.
- Matt with all girls except Evelyn and Eliza.
- Mike with all girls except Mara.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Evelyn, Mike, Asher and Jordan vs Eliza, Matt and Mara.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Matthew and Evelyn. Inverted with Mike/Mara and Asher/Eliza.
- Strong Girl, Smart Guy:
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Mara and Jordan vs Evelyn and Eliza, to a lesser extent.
- True Companions: At the end of the day, they're this. In spite of all the bickering and teasing.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Because of the huge differences between them, they often clash, jokingly or otherwise.
Asher Diamonds
Asher is the confident one. He likes to act like he's above his friends but deep down, he's very insecure and troubled. He still manages to make up for it with being kinder than he appears to be and being the powerhouse in the group.
- Affectionate Nickname: Ash. As for Ashie that his dad uses...not so much.
- Alone Among the Couples: Apart from the dead Jordan, he's this in the group by the end of the first book. It's not the case anymore after Eliza joined.
- Ambiguously Bi: The hints become increasingly more apparent around Matt as Asher often blushes around him whenever a relationship between them is teasingly alluded to.
- Anguished Declaration of Love: He does this in the sequel to a dead Rose.
- Bare-Fisted Monk: He is a good fighter indeed and his first scene in the sequel implies that he took on martial arts at some point.
- Beneath the Mask: This seemingly preppy kid is more broken inside than he seems. Just take a look at what possible emotional turmoil he's hiding in his Butt-Monkey and Break the Haughty entries.
- Berserk Button: Don't threaten his friends and don't push him too far. Matt learned that last one the hard way.
- Calling him Ashie is a minor one.
- As of late, the Dumb Muscle jokes are starting to get irritating for him. This is his reaction after Evelyn makes one after he took the job of being the voice of reason during a disconcerting moment in which the group is trying to figure out why Mike walked home before them after finding out that Mara has been seen with Mason:
Asher: (rolling his eyes then shooting a Death Glare towards Evelyn) Thanks, Eve. Someone give a round of applause to Eve for the creative nicknames. - Big Damn Heroes: His decision to isolate himself from the group after beating up Matt leaves him as the only one able to rush to school after it's closed to save his friends.
- Big Ego, Hidden Depths: Downplayed on the big ego part. He can still be considered the most boastful of the boys, though he's very insecure deep down.
- The Big Guy: Although not large in size, he is probably the strongest one out of the group besides Jordan.
- Boisterous Bruiser: The Big Guy in the gang and he's pretty lively and cheery.
- Break the Haughty: He's had a crush on Evelyn for a long time, only to get rejected in favor of the one guy she ever had feelings for. When it looks like he found someone else to love, she gets taken away from him forever, thus making him the only one single in the group. Needless to say, he's the one most likely to just shed tears at the mention of the the book's events as seen in the sequel.
- Bruiser with a Soft Center: The Big Guy of the group and he has moments where he acts in a mean way, but has a good heart deep down.
- The Bus Came Back: Returns and joins the other five after his absence from the first few chapter.
- Butt-Monkey: Everyone gets pulled through crap in the story, but Asher has it bad and continuous. It starts by him getting friendzoned by Evelyn in favor of Matt, leaving him to wonder why was it Matt and not him. When he's finally able to get some Ship Tease with Evelyn, it looks like they might get together. Nope. The potential date gets thrown out the window when Asher tells Matt some harsh words, causing Evelyn to reject him and give him a "The Reason You Suck" Speech for his trouble. He tries to move on with Rose and it seems to be going well. He still gets a What the Hell, Hero? moment when he beats up Matt but Rose is still there for him. That doesn't last. Rose loses her life and it leaves Asher very broken inside as we see in the sequel. He just can't catch a break.
- Cannot Spit It Out: He never directly admitted his feelings for Evelyn. Not that he really had a chance with her. He also had this with Rose and Eliza.
- Character Tic: His tendency to give fist bumps is stated to be this by Matt.Asher: I've just been using it my whole life.
- Chick Magnet: Besides his relationship with Rose that gets more focus, he's had Ship Tease with Evelyn, and she seemed like she might be able to move on from Matt if it weren't for Asher messing it up later.
- While his relationship with Eliza in the sequel is strictly platonic, she does seem to have a soft spot for him, and she does admit that she thinks he's wonderful, causing him to blush.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: Over both Evelyn and Rose, and poor Matt has to be the one on the receiving end of it. He starts showing shades of this around Eliza as well.
- Deadpan Snarker: Occasionally. His first interaction with Jordan is essentially Snark-to-Snark Combat. His snarky side tends to come to the surface when Matt is involved.
- Did Not Get the Girl: Two girls, in fact. Evelyn and Rose.
- Digging Yourself Deeper: When he called Matt a nerd in the sequel as a joke and Eliza told him not to because it's not nice.Asher: I didn't say nerd. I said..uh...turd! ...That's not much better, is it?
- Dogged Nice Guy: Evelyn seems to think this when she calls him out on being mean to Matt, only to try and backpedal on his words when she rejects him.
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: A more lowkey version where Asher is actually dismissive and reassuring. When the group is about to visit Jordan's grave accompanied by her parents, the couples start relying on each other for comfort. Matt suddenly pipes up and tells them not to do that a lot since it'll make Asher feel left out. While Asher is moved by Matt somehow reading his thought process and correctly telling the others to do something that might help him cope a bit easier with Rose's death, he ultimately tells them that he's fine and that him being there shouldn't stop them from being affectionate.
- Driven by Envy: The reason behind his initial hatred for Matt is his desire to be together with Evelyn.
- Dumbass Has a Point: While he's not actually a dumbass, he's often joked to be the least intelligent member of the gang which is why Evelyn is quick to comment on his insightful remark as detailed above.
- Dumb Jock: He's been referred to as a Dumb Muscle. However, Asher is actually a downplayed example. He doesn't employ overly scientific and rational solutions nor does he get high grade in school, but he is definitely more sensible and aware than your typical dumb muscle.
- Embarrassing Nickname: His father Hunter calls him "Ashie". Apparently, it's a childhood nickname.Matt: Mike is never gonna let you live that one down.
- Emotional Bruiser: He's not afraid to show his true emotions when needed.
- Everyone Has Standards: Like his friends, he's horrified to learn that Nate and Dexter were killed.
- Fire-Forged Friends: He and Matt stand out from the rest. They initially didn't like each other very much, but they start to warm up first after standing up to the bullies, then their friendship is cemented after working together to stop Jordi from committing anymore murders.
- First Love: He's this to Rose, ignoring Nate's Implied Love Interest status.
- Foil: To Jordan. While they do share a few things in common, there's also some differences:
- While they both resent Matthew for being Evelyn's Love Interest because they both have a crush on her, Asher lacks one additional thing: Jordan's Freudian Excuse which is having had bad relationships with boys before.
- While they're both a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, Asher is arguably friendlier since he started warming up to Matt sooner in a Not Bad way. It took Jordan being Driven to Suicide, Barred from the Afterlife, having a Face Heel Return in the sequel before she Took a Level in Kindness.
- As mentioned in Shadow Archetype in Jordan's folder, the one thing Asher hadn't thought to do that Jordan did: kill Matthew.
- Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Matt actually forgave him for the beatdown he gave him but he won't hesitate to bring the beatdown he gave him if necessary.
- Generation Xerox: Shares this with Matt. Both their parents have been in a Love Triangle when they were their ages, and just like Asher lost, his father also lost. It becomes more eerie when you can see similarities in the aftermath too: Asher's father ended up losing his wife because she ran away for unknown reasons, and Asher lost the girl who helped him move on from Evelyn because she was killed.
- Good is Not Nice: God help you if you get on Asher's bad side. God help you.
- Handshake Substitute: He's known to use fist bumps as his signatures greeting. Matt lampshades it at one point and Asher replies that he's just been doing it for all his life, leading Matt to deem it a tic.
- Hate at First Sight: He was the first one to meet Mason (aside from Eliza) and instantly got a bad feeling about him, if only because he was jealous Mason was making moves on Eliza. He was right.
- Heartbroken Badass: With both Evelyn and Rose. He loses Evelyn to Matt and Rose to death, and being the one Alone Among the Couples doesn't do him any favors either.
- Hidden Depths: In the finale, He reveals to Matt that he knows how to lockpick, thus he was able to overcome Jordan's Crazy-Prepared plan of locking all doors to the school.
- Hopeless Suitor: For Evelyn and later, Eliza.
- Hot-Blooded: He's quite feisty and boastful.
- Inferiority Superiority Complex: Implied, since he is just as broken on the inside as everyone else, but he tries not to come off that way.
- Ironic Name: The name Asher means "happy" or "blessed". Not really fitting for a guy who got rejected by his best friend, then lost another girl he started to like, leaving him scarred and broken inside.
- It's All About Me: Not nearly as bad as Jordan when it comes to Evelyn, but he did spend a considerable amount of time bemoaning Evelyn's interest in Matthew because he thinks he's better than him.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Eventually settles on this and becomes supportive of Matt and Evelyn.
- Jerkass Has a Point: Although beating Matt up was considered going too far, Asher had a point about Matt not confessing that he didn't like Evelyn from the beginning. He also has all the right to be mad at him for screaming at him in front of the whole class.
- Jerkass Realization: He has to go through two of these to realize how bad he's been. One was after Evelyn confronted him on his poor choice of words when saying that he wants Matt to be hurt. The second one occurred after he hurt Matt himself and all his friends turned on him because of this.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mean-spirited he might be, but you can depend on him in times of crisis.
- Joke and Receive: Although both him and Matt were joking, their assertion that life would be better if the bullies were to die comes true. It doesn't make life better.
- Just Eat Gilligan: Asher actually proposes that Eliza makes something to erase all antagonists, essentially. Matt and Eliza argue that it's immoral and that Eliza's capabilities shouldn't be used by her friends for their own benefit in that way.
- Just Friends: He's friendzoned by Evelyn and later, Eliza.
- Like Father, Like Son: He's a lot like his father Hunter.
- Lovable Jock: Is stated to be the strongest of the boys, and is definitely fun to have around.
- Love Hurts: He's very unlucky when it comes to love. First, his friend that he crushed on rejects him because she has feelings for only one other boy, then he starts to like another girl only for her to get killed off. It hurt him deeply and the sequel shows it.
- The McCoy: Pretty emotional, brash and somewhat arrogant.
- Mirror Character: To Matt. Both of them have a Hidden Heart of Gold reserved for their loved ones, both of them have a Berserk Button involving said loved one and they both seem to have interest in the same type of girls.
- He also shares quite a few things with Jordan: Both are the powerhouse of the team, both are Evelyn's best friends, both despised Matt at the beginning due to Evelyn's crush on him and both have a crush on Evelyn. Only difference is that Jordan actually tried to Murder the Hypotenuse while Asher moved on and started crushing on Rose.
- Missing Mom: The intro briefly mentions that his mom is nowhere to be seen. Apparently, his dad met her in college then she disappeared for unknown reasons after Asher was born.
- My God, What Have I Done?: He's very regretful when he beats Matt up, and even admits that he still considers him a friend after everything.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: He hands one to Matt after the latter pushes him too far.
- Not Bad: When they stand up to the bullies together for the first time, Asher says this to Matt, which leads to the Friendship Moment described below in Smile of Approval.
- Put on a Bus: Notably the only protagonist who is absent from early consecutive chapters after his introduction (save for a phone call for Evelyn at some point).
- Red Is Heroic: He likes to wear red and has his hair partially dyed red.
- Red Is Violent: Shared with Jordan, who is a Fiery Redhead (though admittedly, she's much more violent than Asher).
- Romantic Runner-Up: To Evelyn.
- Save the Jerk: Played with in regards to Rose. She hasn't actually become nicer when Asher decides to protect her from the murderer but it doesn't take long after that for us to see the kinder side of her.
- Second Love: To Rose, if there was anything between her and Nate.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Mike's Sensitive Guy.
- She Is Not My Girlfriend: When he tries to deny Mason's assumption that he and Eliza are an item. Eliza's No Social Skills is the only reason she doesn't caught onto Asher's obvious nervousness as he lies about his crush on her.
- Shipper on Deck: For Mike and Mara. He also eventually comes around to support Matt and Evelyn.
- Shipping Torpedo: For Matt and Evelyn at first, for obvious reasons.
- Ship Tease: With Evelyn and Rose. Evelyn gets Matt and Rose gets killed by Jordi.
- In the sequel, it's clear he's starting to fancy Eliza once they meet her.
- Smile of Approval: Asher's fondness for Matt started when he stood up to the three bullies, and he smiles at him, admires him for it and even gives him his first signature fist bump.
- Sour Outside, Sad Inside: He's not as bad as Matthew with the sour part, but he occasionally hides his sadness with an angry front.
- Took a Level in Badass: He was probably already badass and just didn't get to show off his fighting abilities, but his Big Damn Heroes moment certainly attributed to this.
- Took a Level in Kindness: He was already a decent guy to begin with, but his interactions, especially with Matt, improved a lot by the end.
- Tsundere: More often than not, he's actually friendly to most, but his angry side is not a sight to behold.
- Verbal Tic: Asher usually uses the word "man" a lot.
Evelyn Miller
Evelyn is the nicest of the bunch. She acts as the heart, she is well-liked and popular, as well as being a social butterfly....though she loses a bit of her confidence around people she likes...
- Affectionate Nickname: Eve. Her dad also calls her princess and Matt referred to her as bub.
- All Love Is Unrequited: At first, Matt was not into her.
- Ambiguously Bi: She seems to have taken a liking to teasing Mara in the sequel.
- Anti-Hero: Grows into this more and more in the sequel with the increase in her cynicism and apathy.
- Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: A PG version occurs in the sequel when Mason hits on both Eliza and Mara, and Evelyn, apparently feeling offended, asks why he's not hitting on her too. Mason shuts her down with You're Not My Type.
- Attention Whore: She has shades of this in the sequel, demanding attention whenever ignored, particularly from her boyfriend Matt.
- Badass Adorable: Very very cute and damn pretty girl who's also not afraid to do whatever it takes to help out her friends, even breaking down her former best friend with words.
- Badass Pacifist: She never fights in the entire book, but she is the only one able to break down Jordi and make her realize her actions, through words only.
- Beauty Equals Goodness: She's considered very attractive in-universe and she's on the good side of things. However, once she becomes more unpleasant...
- Beneath the Mask: Subjecting her to horrific events revealed her jealousy, possessiveness and mean-spirited side, something that shocks all her friends.
- Berserk Button: Talking bad about Matt surely gets out a side of her not seen often...
- Beware the Nice Ones: Make no mistake, Evelyn is a sweet girl who always looks on the positive side of things. But she does have her limits...
- Break the Cutie: The events of the first book chipped away at her niceness and made her possessive.
- Broken Pedestal: Evelyn absolutely adores her Best Friend Jordan so it's only natural that this trope would follow after we find out the latter is a murderer.
- Brutal Honesty: She became pretty much tactless after her negative character development. See the second example for Jerkass Has a Point below.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: She has shades of this in the sequel. It affects her kindness noticeably.
- Closet Key: She was this to Jordan.
- Covert Pervert: Evelyn shows signs of being The Tease in the sequel and Matt comments on how unexpected that behavior is from her.
- The Cutie: Just look at her.
- Cynicism Catalyst: She ends up becoming less idealistic after Jordan's Face–Heel Turn.
- Daddy's Girl: She's very close to her father Norman, and he's in turn loving and protective of her.
- Driven by Envy: The whole reason behind all of Jerkass moments in the sequel! Seriously. Except when it's not.
- Dude Magnet: Both Matt and Asher develop crushes on her, and she's shown to be popular in school as a group of boys greet her when she passes them.
- Endearingly Dorky: Outgoing, full of energy and a bit shy. Evelyn is definitely one.
- Et Tu, Brute?: Being her Best Friend, Evelyn clearly feels betrayed by Jordan when she turns out to be the murderer.
- Even the Girls Want Her: A rather tragic example. Jordi wanted Evelyn to be with her, but her love being unrequited is what drives the former down a dark path.
- Everyone Has Standards: Like her friends, she doesn't think the bullies deserve to be killed.
- Everyone Loves Blondes: Ties in with her Dude Magnet status above.
- First Love: To Matthew and Asher.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Very much on her way to becoming this because she Took a Level in Jerkass.
- Genki Girl: She definitely gives Matt trouble keeping up with her.
- Girly Girl: Compared to Mara and Jordan, Evelyn is more feminine in appearance and personality.
- Good is Not Nice: She's still on the good side of things, but she's becoming more...unpleasant.
- Good Is Not Soft: She is a Nice Girl (initially) that has her limits after all...
- Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Mentions that purple is her favorite color and decides to wear purple for her date with Matt.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Evelyn is a cute blonde girl who's always there for her friends whom she cherishes very much.
- Head-Turning Beauty: In her Establishing Character Moment, she walks by a group of boys who immediately turn to her once they see her approaching and three of them greet her flirtatiously.
- The Heart: She's the one most likely to step in when an argument happens.
- Hypocrite: She complains to Matt that she's feeling jealous of him seemingly becoming closer to Eliza, yet she shamelessly tried to urge Mason to hit on her, right in front of Matt.
- Hypocrite Has a Point: It's also quite rich of her to get jealous of Eliza when she senses Matt's starting to like her and even indirectly tell the latter to consider getting closer to Asher after she professed how crucial it is to be able to let go of someone who doesn't like you back in the first book to BOTH Asher and Jordan. Though in all fairness to her, she and Matt are an Official Couple now so she does have a point.
- Innocently Insensitive: She doesn't realize that Jordan has feelings for her. She blames Jordan's Face–Heel Turn completely on herself, but her dad Norman points out that she had no way of knowing.
- Insecure Love Interest: She eventually revealed to Matt that she had doubts he liked her but chose to ignore them because she really wanted him.
- Jerkass Has a Point: She gets quite a few of these to go with her character shift from nice to mean. A few examples include:
- She's right to call out Matt for Dropping the Bombshell at a bad time and giving Eliza the impression that she did something wrong on her first day.
- She doesn't let up on Jordan easily in the sequel, but to be fair, she has every right to call her out. Interestingly enough, she was the first one to tell Jordan's parents and Jordan herself that they forgave her.
- She makes yet another good point despite her tactless delivery when she calls out Mike, Asher and Matt for squabbling among themselves about their suspicions that Mara is with Mason. The three are silenced after her words.
Evelyn: Ugh, would you three cut it out already? You're not solving anything by arguing among yourselves like this. We're on our way to her house and we'll find out the truth, so just shut up already. - Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Originally a Nice Girl played straight, Evelyn starts showing signs of being mean in the second book but she still has moments with her kindness and clarity, making her this trope.
- The Kirk: She's not as stoic and unemotional as Mara and not as brash and expressive as Jordan.
- Longing Look: She does this with Matt in class, which goes unnoticed by him.
- Love Confessor: The first time she admitted her crush on Matt was when she confided in Jordan about it.
- Like Parent, Like Child: Nice like both her parents and has her mother's cooking skills.
- Missing Mom: Revealed to have lost her mother because she died of reasons not mentioned.
- Morality Pet: To Jordan.
- Never My Fault: In the sequel, she refuses to acknowledge that her newfound toxic behavior is gradually killing her friendships and relationship.
- Nice Girl: Besides Mara, she is among the most pleasant people here.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Her argument as to why bullies do not deserve to die.Evelyn: They're kids just like us.
- Oblivious to Love: In the infirmary scene, she confirmed to Matt that she is not a Clueless Dude Magnet but she understandably never figured out Jordan's feelings for her.
- Official Couple: With Matthew.
- Selective Obliviousness: In the infirmary scene, she admits to Matt that she always felt like he didn't like her but she chose to ignore it and push it away.
- Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: During the short time Matt was not actually interested in her, she was this.
- Shipper on Deck: For Mike and Mara.
- Shipper with an Agenda: She tried encouraging Eliza to talk more often with Asher, clearly intending to get her away from Matt.
- Ship Tease: With Matt and Asher. She chooses the former.
- Silk Hiding Steel: Evelyn is well-mannered and friendly while also not being a pushover. Underneath her kindness are sharp words and a strong will to stand up for what's right.
- Single-Target Sexuality: Towards Matt. It becomes a Deconstructed Trope in the sequel, as her fixation on Matt amplifies her jealousy and she Took a Level in Jerkass.
- Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Aside from his looks, Evelyn fell for Matt for his good heart and desire to do the right thing. She points this out to Asher during her "The Reason You Suck" Speech to him.Evelyn: Matt came and warned us, despite knowing that we were upset with him. He's honest and caring!
- Spoiled Sweet: It's not brought up often but she is stated to be an Uptown Girl, and her father dotes on her and yet she's still a Nice Girl.
- Supreme Chef: She's said to be this, according to her father. This is a quality she shares with her mother.
- The Tease: She acts this way towards Matt and occasionally towards Mara in the sequel.
- Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity: Slowly becoming the case in the sequel, with Jordan Taking A Level In Kindness while Evelyn is Taking A Level In Jerkass.
- Took a Level in Cynic: Along with the major change from Nice Girl to Jerkass listed below, she becomes more apathetic in the sequel.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: In the sequel. It comes with her jealousy involving Matt and bitterness over the first book's events. She's almost unrecognizable to her former self.
- Took a Level in Smartass: She was originally the only one out of the six who never exhibited snarkiness. By the time she Took a Level in Jerkass in the sequel, it became apparently that mean-spirited comments are one of her specialties now.
- True Love Is Boring: Her relationship with Matt starts going down this route in the sequel. And it's mostly her fault.
- Uptown Girl: The Millers are said to be wealthy, making Evelyn this for Matt.
- We Used to Be Friends: She seems to feel this way about Jordan when she finds out she's the murderer.
- What Does She See in Him?: Her attraction to Matt is a mystery to both Asher and Jordan.
- Wide-Eyed Idealist: She sincerely has high hopes for people in the world and likes to look on the positive side of things. It gets crushed when she discovers her best friend turned into a murderer and she becomes more of a Jerkass.
- You Monster!: Evelyn delivers this to Jordan in the climax.
Jordan Fisher
Jordan is a tomboy. She is the fiercest at best and the meanest at worst. Never afraid to speak her mind or yell and put down anybody, including her own friends. She could possibly have some insecurities hidden, however.
- Affectionate Nickname: Jordi. Asher also referred to her as Jords once.
- Amicable Exes: Averted with Mason, and basically every other guy she's been with.
- Anti-Villain: Given that she's one of their friends and she still has sympathetic traits, Jordan falls into this category of villains.
- Alas, Poor Villain: Jordan is revealed to be the Big Bad, yet her death scene makes it hard not to feel sorry for her.
- The Atoner: She starts making up for what she has done when she comes back in the sequel.
- Barred from the Afterlife: In the sequel, she stated that she could do nothing but watch her friends and family and not be able to reach out to them.
- Beneath the Mask: Her tough manner is a cover for a lot of insecurities on her part. She's a bisexual girl vying for her best friend who's only interested in one guy. Said desire is driven by her previous dating experiences with boys that went horrible. She comes around and accepts it in the sequel, but she's still struggling with her feelings.
- Berserk Button: Hurting her loved ones, especially Evelyn.
- Big Bad: She was never a bad person to begin with, but the pressure of all the drama and events culminated in her becoming the villain.
- The Big Girl: The strongest in the team aside from Asher.
- Break the Haughty: While she's the one who subjects everyone to emotional breaking, she does go through some of her own. The realization that hits her like a truck leaves her very remorseful of her actions, driving her to end her own life. Not to mention the blasting (though much deserved) "The Reason You Suck" Speech she receives from her friends.
- Bruiser with a Soft Center: The soft center part disappears when she becomes the Big Bad, but returns in the sequel after her Heel–Face Turn.
- Bully Hunter: She has zero tolerance for them. She arguably becomes a literal hunter in the end.
- But Not Too Bi: In the climax, she claims that she dated boys before and developed crushes on both Mara and Evelyn, but her attraction to boys is never actually shown.
- Cannot Spit It Out: The whole thing probably could've been avoided if she tried to be more honest with Evelyn about her feelings for her. She also had this with her crush on Mara, chickening out every time she got a chance to talk to her.
- Deadpan Snarker: Part of her rough exterior is an unpleasant sense of humor.
- Death Equals Redemption: The reason why she commits suicide is because she believes in this trope.
- Depraved Bisexual: In her Motive Rant, she goes on about her past experiences with dating boys, and how she opted to vie for Evelyn's attention.
- Does Not Like Men: Part of the reason why she opted to vie for Evelyn's attention was her previous experiences with dating boys, as she says in her Motive Rant.
- Driven by Envy: To the point of murder.
- Driven to Suicide: She ultimately ends her life by her own hands, jumping off the school's building after being cornerned.
- Embarrassing First Name: Judging from her correcting Asher that he should call her Jordi. She doesn't mind it when Evelyn uses it and eventually accepts it from everyone.
- Empowered Badass Normal: She gains some supernatural powers after becoming a ghost.
- Entitled to Have You: Feels this way about Evelyn, which is why she ends up committing murder.
- Even Evil Can Be Loved: For all she's done, her friends forgive her. Not to mention her parents who miss her very much after she dies.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: For what it's worth, she really did love and care about Mara and Evelyn. She just doesn't know how to handle rejection.
- Evil Counterpart: To Asher. She acts as a Foil and a Mirror Character to him simultaneously:
- They're both close friends of Evelyn's, both have a crush on her and both are jealous of Matt because Evelyn only likes him. However, there is one more reason Jordan has it out for him: She has a general hatred of boys due to her former toxic relationships.
- While both of them are rough-mannered but good deep down, Asher is actually more laidback than Jordan and starts warming up to Matt a lot sooner.
- Both of them are the powerhouse of the team and both got the chance to display it against Matt for hurting Evelyn. Asher got to deliver a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown that he regretted later, Jordan planned to outright kill Matthew and didn't fully regret until her Heel–Face Return in the sequel.
- Evil Redhead: She pulls a Face–Heel Turn and she has orange hair.
- Ex-Big Bad: She does die for real but then she's Barred from the Afterlife and comes back to her family and friends.
- Fallen Heroine: She used to be one of the good ones, until she snapped and became the Big Bad murderer...
- Feminine Mother, Tomboyish Daughter: Jordan is fierce, confrontational and rough. The polar opposite of Lizzie.
- Fiery Redhead: Very much so, yes.
- Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: In the sequel, her friends don't hesitate to bring up her murder spree. Jordan understands that nothing will ever justifies what she does.
- Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: It's no surprise that no one even agrees with her that her past relationships with terrible boys are a good reason to turn into a murderer.
- Good is Not Nice: She's definitely the jerkiest of the six but her heart is in the right place.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Over Mara and Evelyn.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: Out of the six, Jordan is the one that gets angry easily.
- Heel Realization: She has this after murdering Rose.
- Heel–Face Return: When she comes back in the sequel.
- Hopeless Suitor: For Mara and Evelyn.
- I Just Want to Be Loved: Deep down, Jordan is emotionally scarred from her previous relationship with boys and her thinking that she will be happy with a girl like Mara or Evelyn is what ends up triggering her murderous intent.
- Incompatible Orientation: The main reason why Evelyn would never ever date her is because of Single-Target Sexuality but this is also another reason why. She's only into boys.
- It's All About Me: Oh boy howdy. Just take a look at any trope referencing her crush on Evelyn.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She ultimately accepts that she can't have neither girls she crushed on.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Without a doubt, Jordan is the meanest of the group, but she still has her kind moments. Although she starts to leans towards being a full-on jerkass, this is balanced out by her having a realization and becoming regretful of her actions.
- Just Friends: Her crush on Evelyn remains unrequited.
- Kick the Morality Pet: While she did all what she did for Evelyn's sake (In Jordan's own eyes, at least), it only ended up hurting the former and subsequently turning into a Jerkass in the sequel.
- Knight Templar: The way she describes killing Matt as getting rid of the source of the problem and desire to protect others from her makes her seem like this trope.
- Like Parent, Unlike Child: Both her parents are easygoing while she's...not.
- Lovable Jock: She's The Big Girl and the strong one in the team alongside Asher. The lovable part isn't apparent after her crimes, but it comes back in the sequel.
- Manipulative Bitch: She uses two unwitting pawns and toys with her friends just to get to Matt.
- The McCoy: The most emotional and action-driven out of the girls.
- Not Good with Rejection: Snapping and going around murdering people is not how a sane person would react when their crush likes someone else.
- Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: It's a little hard to agree with her methods of protecting Evelyn. Those methods are murder and deception, by the way.
- Really Gets Around: A non-sexual example. She mentions dating boys in the past, which left her very bitter. It's cemented in the sequel when Mason shows up and is revealed to be one of her ex-boyfriends. She even specifically says that he's one of them.
- Red Is Heroic: Played straight then averted by her becoming an Evil Redhead. Played straight again in the sequel.
- Red Is Violent: Even more so than Asher.
- Sanity Slippage: Her Big Bad Slippage ends up causing this slippage as well.
- Shadow Archetype: Had Asher taken his jealousy of Matt and possessiveness to the extreme, he would've ended up like Jordan: an Ax-Crazy Serial Killer.
- She Who Fights Monsters: At first, she acted (justifiably) antagonistic towards the bullies in the school. Then she reached a whole new level of retribution when she murders them, horrifying her friends.
- Shipper on Deck: She eventually got over her crush on Mara. Unfortunately for Matt, the same doesn't happen with her crush on Evelyn until the sequel.
- Shipping Torpedo: As noted above, she was against Matt and Evelyn being together for obvious reasons. She actually gets better about it in the sequel.
- Sour Outside, Sad Inside: She's pretty fierce and confrontational, but underneath it all is a Hopeless Suitor with a crush on her best friend. She reveals some of this sadness in the sequel.
- Straw Hypocrite: She looks mad at Asher for beating up Matt, just like everyone else. When you find out she was planning to kill Matt, it becomes clear that she only did that to avoid suspicions.
- Sympathetic Murderer: Yes, Jordan killed three bullies who can be seen as Asshole Victims. However, she was also ready to kill Matt, who has done nothing wrong to provoke her wrath other than inadvertently draw the romantic attention of Evelyn, Jordan's best friend whom she crushed on. Not to mention that one of the bullies went through Character Development and became a better person. Jordan could still get sympathy from her Driven to Suicide death scene, her regret and Even Evil Has Loved Ones regarding Evelyn.
- Teens Are Monsters: Applies to her more than anyone else, being an Ax-Crazy Serial Killer.
- Tender Tomboyishness, Foul Femininity: Slowly becoming the case in the sequel, with Jordan Taking A Level In Kindness while Evelyn is Taking A Level In Jerkass.
- Tomboyish Name: Jordan is a unisex name, but it still qualifies.
- Tomboyish Ponytail: She fills all the requirements to be a tomboy and she wears her hair in a ponytail.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She acts tough and talks rudely but aside from that, she doesn't dress in a masculine way and even prefers to be called Jordi.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: She's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold at worst. By the end of the first book, she's an outright Jerkass that murders people out of envy and jealousy but thankfully...
- Took a Level in Kindness: By the time she comes back in the sequel, she's immensely regretful and somewhat nicer than what she used to be.
- Tsundere: Even more so than Asher. Jordan is a Fiery Redhead who's usually aggressive and callous but she's not heartless by any means. Her Character Arc deals with her learning to show the sweet side to her male friends more, rather than just to Mara and Evelyn.
- Villain Has a Point: The same one as Asher's Jerkass Has a Point above, she's not wrong that Matt broke Evelyn's heart in a way that could've been avoided. Doubles as Hypocrite Has a Point since a bigger tragedy could've been avoided if she herself handled rejection better.
- Villainous Breakdown: Has this momentarily after Evelyn's Breaking Speech, and it causes her to kill Rose, who she's been holding hostage.
- Villainous Crush: What her feelings for Mara and Evelyn turn into after she becomes a murderer.
- Villain Protagonist: She's one of the six main characters, but her actions in the end lands her in the Big Bad role.
- Walking Spoiler: Have you seen how many spoilers she has here?
- Yandere: Over Evelyn.
Mara Nakamura
Mara is by far the nicest (yes, perhaps even more so than Evelyn) and most tolerant in the group. She tries her best to help her friends when they need her, though her fears sometimes get in the way of that. She's more likely to comfort than deal with a problem head-on. She's also the least confident and the shyest.
- Abusive Dad: To the point where her father can be entirely blamed for all her internal damage.
- Affectionate Nickname: Mar or just M. She doesn't like Baby Mara or Little Mara, though.
- All of the Other Reindeer: Up until she met her current friends, she was hit with this treatment hard.
- Ambiguously Bi: Her reaction to seeing Eliza for the first time is a Jaw Drop at how pretty she is.
- Author Avatar: More or less. It's less apparent than Houssem's case with Matt, but Watermelon is like Mara in different ways.
- The Baby of the Bunch: In the chapter where the group tell each other their birthdays, she's revealed to be this. Downplayed in that they're all the same age but she's younger by months. Her short status is another factor.
- Bald Head of Toughness: In contrast to most of the girls who have long hair, Mara has most of her hair shaved off. Deconstructed because this is something she hates about herself since she knows it makes her appear more tomboyish.
- Beneath the Mask: Arguably the biggest one out of the cast. She's filled with self-loathing, her troubled home life has taken a toll on her, and she's very prone to cry in private because of it. She hides all of that with a smile.
- Berserk Button: Downplayed. She's a very nice girl who gets slightly irritated when called by her Embarrassing Nickname mentioned below. Except when Mike uses it, maybe.
- In the sequel, a genuine one is shown: trespassing her private life.
- Beta Couple: Arguably her relationship with Mike, as it is less problematic than any other ones in the story.
- Beware the Nice Ones: She doesn't hesitate to tell Mason that she'll punch him in the sequel.
- Beware the Quiet Ones: She becomes absolutely livid when she finds out her friends breached her privacy to uncover that she's likely hiding an eating disorder and definitely into Self-Harm. While their intentions were good, she's not entirely wrong.
- Big Sister Worship: She is very fond of her older sister Kata, in contrast to her relationship with Xavier.
- Break the Cutie: She was already very broken as we see in the sequel. Things only get worse for her.
- Broken Bird: Even before the events of the first book took place, due to her horrible home life.
- Bungled Suicide: Due to a branch unexpectedly breaking as she prepared to jump from the tree, Mara ended up with a fractured arm and a bleeding head instead.
- Butt-Monkey: Oh, so much so. She's probably the biggest candidate for this trope in the entire series.
- Byronic Heroine: Aside from her niceness, Mara fits this trope to a T. Brooding, has a Dark and Troubled Past and quite the tragic character.
- Cain and Abel: Mara and Kata are the Abel to Xavier's Cain.
- Cannot Spit It Out: One thing she struggles with as the shyest.
- Catapult Nightmare: She does this after a All Just a Dream where her father killed her for getting him kicked out of the house. This Nightmare Sequence would become the driving factor of her being Driven to Suicide.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Not as bad as Evelyn and Jordan but it's still there.
- Clothing-Concealed Injury: Revealed in the sequel to have Self-Harm tendencies, and she hides them using her gloves that extends over her arms.
- Cynicism Catalyst: Her Dark and Troubled Past with the family.
- Dark and Troubled Past: While Asher and Evelyn lost their moms and Jordan has a history of toxic relationships with boys, Mara notably sticks out as the only protagonist with a seriously messed up background.
- Dark Secret: Her Self-Harm tendencies and possible eating disorder.
- Deadpan Snarker: Mostly towards her friends and especially her boyfriend Mike.
- The Disease That Shall Not Be Named: Eliza concludes that Mara has an eating disorder based on her listing what to eat for a day on a notebook and purging her stomach by forcing herself to vomit, but it's never actually specified.
- Dude Magnet: Aside from Mike, Mason seems to be into her, although he is an Abhorrent Admirer for her.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Although intended to be affectionate by her friends, Mara gets slightly aggravated when she's called by something that refers to her short status or young age.
- Emotionless Girl: Not entirely, but she is this compared to Evelyn and Jordan.
- Endearingly Dorky: Despite the sad air around her, Mara partakes in this trope, especially when around her crush.
- Even the Girls Want Her: The moment Jordan's eyes lay on Mara, her crush on her is revealed.
- Everyone Has Standards: Like her friends, she doesn't think bullies deserve to be killed.
- Extreme Doormat: The quietest and less confrontational of the six, she's prone to being pushed around without being able to stand up for herself.
- Feminine Mother, Tomboyish Daughter: While they are both nice, Mara definitely strays away from being feminine like Dianna.
- First Love: To Mike.
- Foil: To her boyfriend Mike. Mike is chipper and outgoing while Mara is quiet and submissive. It can be even observed in their family life. Mike is the oldest child while Mara is the youngest. Mike has a good, if vitriolic relationship with his siblings and gets along with his parents. Mara only gets along with her mother and sister, while she has an outright abusive relationship with her brother and father.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: She and Kata are responsible to their foolish brother Xavier.
- Friendless Background: While Matt and Mike had each other and Evelyn had Jordan and Asher, Mara was the loner before meeting them.
- Hates Being Touched: Mike jokes at one point that Mara is this. She actually tells Evelyn that she's just not used to physical affection when the latter hugs her. Considering her abusive household, this makes sense.
- Hates Their Parent: Her father Jack, and for very, very good reason.
- Headphones Equal Isolation: She carries her headphones even in school, oftentimes putting in to tune out the rest of the world.
- He Is Not My Boyfriend: Mike is really not...Until he was.
- Icy Blue Eyes: They compliment her Emotionless Girl nature very well.
- I Just Want to Be Loved: Her first lines of thought suggest this heavily. She manages to achieve this when she meets Mike.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Coming from a Friendless Background, this only makes sense. She finds what she's looking for when she meets the other five and later, Eliza.
- Insecure Love Interest: The sequel sheds more light on it. At one point, Mike tells his friends that he's going over to Eliza's for homework (In reality, he's going over there to spy on Mara and discover the reason behind her weird behavior) and then Asher starts joking that he scored a date night with Eliza. Although Mike does clarify to Mara that they are just messing around, she gives us the line that puts her under this trope.Mara (thinking): It's fine. I wouldn't be surprised if you replaced me eventually anyways.
- Jerkass Has a Point: An interesting case because she's not normally a Jerkass but her niceness and shyness completely vanish when she calls out her friends for breaching her privacy to uncover her dark secrets. While they did it with good intentions and Mara completely snapped uncharacteristically, she still makes a good point.
- Karmic Nod: Mara feels this way about getting exposed for agreeing to a deal to date a Casanova Wannabe blackmailing her using her friends' secrets after she yelled at her friends for intruding on her life to uncover her Dark Secret, though her friends obviously think otherwise because Mara had every right to be mad.
- Like Mother, Like Daughter: Takes after her mother entirely.
- Loners Are Freaks: The stares she gets from her classmates suggest that they think this way of her. Rose, Nate and Dexter even pointedly refer to her as a freak.
- Loner-Turned-Friend: At the very least, she was able to find a group she fits in.
- Mature Younger Sibling: Compared to her brother Xavier, as we see in the sequel.
- Meaningful Name: Her name could mean "bitter", which fitting for her abusive household and all her negative feelings.
- Mirror Character: To Eliza. Both are brunettes, both were lonely and never had friends and both are very nice despite that fact.
- Morality Pet: She's this to Matt, of all people. Although he is far from a villain or a jerk, she is perhaps the least likely to be a victim of his sour sense of humor or smart remarks.
- Less so with Jordan, whose true Morality Pet is Evelyn.
- Nervous Wreck: The jumpiest of the main characters.
- Nice Girl: To a fault.
- Nightmare Fetishist: Just before Jordan becomes visible as a ghost in the sequel, she has to signal Eliza where she is so she can use the ray gun on her. Jordan hides under a blanket and starts floating. Mike wonders why Mara isn't freaked out by this. Her response?Mara: I like creepy stuff.
- No Social Skills: The reason why she was always alone before meeting her current friends.
- Official Couple: With Mike.
- Only Sane by Comparison: Of the girls. She hasn't been driven to do irrational things due to jealousy like Evelyn and Jordan, but she's still not free of issues. The actual Only Sane Woman would become Eliza later.
- The Quiet One: She even lampshades it in a conversation with Matt.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: With Xavier.
- Single-Target Sexuality: Despite the Ambiguously Bi entry above, Mara doesn't display attraction towards anyone but Mike.
- Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Mike is a an all-around nice guy, and it's not hard to see why Mara fell for him.
- Shipper on Deck: For Matt and Evelyn.
- Ship Tease: With Mike. They end up together, of course.
- Shrinking Violet: So damn much. She's often seen hiding behind her friends who happen to be taller than her, or using her hoodie.
- The Spock: Stoic and emotionless, and while she lacks intellect, she's the most down to earth of the girls.
- Stepford Smiler: Heavily implied throughout the series.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Best put by Evelyn:Evelyn: (Introducing Mara to Eliza) She might be nervous at first but she's a really nice girl once you get to know her.
- Tomboy Angst: She hates the tomboyish traits she has.
- Tomboyish Voice: One thing she hates about herself.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: In a way that's kinda inverted compared to Jordan. While the latter is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold who dresses femininely and has a normal feminine voice, Mara is a Nice Girl who dresses more like a tomboy and has a Tomboyish Voice.
- Twice Shy: She had this with Mike for a while.
- Violently Protective Girlfriend: Well, she doesn't exhibit any violent tendencies but she doesn't let anyone near Mike, even wrapping her arms around him and hissing when Mike says there's enough space in his life for Mara and his friends. Her smirk afterwards could indicate it was a joke, however.
Matthew Anderson
Matt is the thoughtful one. He's constantly exasperated with what his peers do, usually groaning and facepalming and making snarky comments, but only because he wants no one to get hurt, and he feels like he's the closest one to earth.
- Actually Pretty Funny: He allows himself to chuckle and even agree when Mara says that boys are stinky.
- Affectionate Nickname: Matt or Matty.
- Ambiguously Bi: It's mostly his relationship with Mike, and later Asher, that has this subtext.
- Anti-Hero: Stands out from the rest of the protagonists as this, lacking Mike's and Mara's kindness, Asher's passion and Evelyn's pacifism. He's still more of a hero than Jordan is, though. At least until the sequel.
- Author Avatar: While he, Mike and Evelyn represent different parts of Houssem, Matt is the one whose more comparable to him.
- Becoming the Mask: At first, he only pretends to be Evelyn's boyfriend under pressure. Then he develops feelings for her...
- Beneath the Mask: Matt is evidently not the careless smart mouth he comes across as. He's actually revealed to loathe himself and has very low self-esteem.
- Berserk Button: Do not hurt Mike or anyone else who's close to him.
- Big Guy, Little Guy: The tallest of the boys and the group as a whole, while Mike is the shortest, though he insists he's not.
- Blue Is Heroic: The sequel mentions his favorite color is blue and he is one of the good guys.
- Break Her Heart to Save Her: Apparently wanted to save Evelyn from himself, because he considers himself unworthy of her.
- Break the Haughty: His well-hidden negative opinion of himself starts coming to the surface thanks to all the trauma he endured.
- Brutal Honesty: Clearly, this is a requirement to go up in front of the whole class and ridicule your friend of sorts. He slips into this while snarking as well.
- Cannot Spit It Out: When he realizes he actually likes Evelyn, he finds it hard to admit and instead lies to her.
- Cassandra Truth: He really wasn't into Evelyn at first. Keyword is "at first".
- Celibate Hero: Hinted at when he turns down Mike's suggestion to talk to Evelyn more often. Although he was Oblivious to Love, Matt is probably more aware of romance and thus, he's not a Chaste Hero.
- Chick Magnet: Aside from Evelyn, he has subtle moments with Rose. In the sequel, even though she considers him a friend, Eliza seems to be fond of him as suggested when she runs to him for comfort after a scary encounter with some entity and literally doesn't let go of him until they get her home.
- Childhood Friends: With Mike.
- The Comically Serious: He is generally played as the Only Sane Man and his stone-faced snarking make for a lot of funny moments in the series.
- Create Your Own Villain: Matt invoking Break Her Heart to Save Her with Evelyn pressed on Jordan's Berserk Button and drove her over the edge to the point of becoming the Big Bad and deciding to kill him.
- Creepy Blue Eyes: Evan seems to think this is the case when Matt makes a blank face at him.
- The Cynic: Comes with being sardonic. He's growing of it gradually.
- Deadpan Snarker: BOY DOES HE. And it's lampshaded by him.Matt: (After he hears that Mike and Mara are an Official Couple now) Wow, you actually took the initiative and did that. I'm actually not sarcastically impressed for once.
- Defiant to the End: In the end when Jordi was about to kill him. Luckily, Asher arrived and slammed the door open at the right time.
- Defrosting Ice King: Evelyn manages to do this for him, though his new friends contributed to it as well.
- Did You Think I Can't Feel?: His cold demeanor is the reason behind this. He finally snaps near the end.
- Distressed Dude: When he gets into the fight with Jordan and almost gets killed. He's rescued by Asher's arrival.
- Everyone Has Standards: Like his friends, he doesn't think that bullies deserve to be killed.
- Fire-Forged Friends: Him and Asher are this, compared to everyone else. They weren't on the best of terms when they first met, but after they stand up to the bullies, Asher warms up to him. They're actual friends by the end of the story.
- First Friend: To Mike.
- First Love: To Evelyn.
- Fisticuff-Provoking Comment: After ridiculing him in front of the class, Matt runs into Asher who's very mad at him. Matt maintains the smart aleck attitude and keeps insulting him, triggering physical retaliation from Asher.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed. One of the way he jokes at the expense of himself is saying that he's everyone's least favorite friend, and while he does appear to be this trope given his role and traits in the group, all his friends ultimately care about him as much as everyone else (Initially, Jordan and Asher were the only ones who truly didn't like him, but they do come around).
- The Gadfly: The cheekiest of the six, and he loves to tease anyone around him.
- Generation Xerox: Shares this with Asher. It turns out their parents had been in a Love Triangle just like they had been with Evelyn. And just like how Matt emerged as victor, his father also emerged victor.
- Good is Not Nice: He's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold at worst but he's one of the good guys.
- Green-Eyed Monster: He's actually this over Mike, if his words to Asher in the climax is anything to go by.
- Icy Blue Eyes: They reflect his stoicism, calm demeanor and levelheadedness.
- Insecure Love Interest: He tells Evelyn that he doesn't think he's good enough for her with his gloomy self that sharply contrasts with her.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He felt this way about Evelyn for a while.
- Jerkass Has a Point: Unless he's joking or is simply annoyed with whoever he directs rudeness towards, there's usually a valid reason behind his brutal comments.
- Jerkass Realization: Although he starts become nicer long before, he does admit in the end that he wasn't the best person to be around.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Matt in a nutshell. He can come off as standoffish and such, but as Mike puts it, he's dependable and willing to help out when he can.
- Joke and Receive: Although both him and Asher were joking, their assertion that life would be better if the bullies were to die comes true. It doesn't make life better.
- Just Friends: He's just a good friend to Eliza.
- The Leader: Somewhat. Near the climax of the first book, he takes the job of directing where everyone goes and what everyone does. It becomes more apparent in the sequel.
- Liar Revealed: During his disastrous date with Evelyn, he finally works up the nerve to tell her the truth about the note he wrote.
- Like Parent, Like Child: He takes more after his mother.
- Mirror Character: To Asher. Both of them have a Hidden Heart of Gold reserved for their loved ones, both of them have a Berserk Button involving said loved one and they both seem to have interest in the same type of girls.
- Nerves of Steel: After the The Reveal of Jordan as the Big Bad, she first aims her gun at Matt, who remains calm, then he questions and chews her out with ease.
- Not So Above It All: Matthew comes off as the Only Sane Man most of the time, but he's still prone to acting silly or erratic like his friends.
- Not So Stoic: The moment the word "murder" was first said, Matt's mask started to crack.
- Oblivious to Love: Not that Evelyn was obvious about it, but Matt was really surprised to find out she had a crush on him.
- Official Couple: With Evelyn.
- One Head Taller: Not just with Evelyn, but possibly everyone else his age.
- Only Friend: Used to be this to Mike.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Almost everyone calls him Matt. Only exceptions are his mother and Eliza.
- Only Sane Man: Not that anybody around him is particularly idiotic, but he often plays this role in the sense that he's the most levelheaded.
- Save the Villain: Tries to do with Jordan on the rooftop when she jumps off. Unfortunately, he failed to reach her in time.
- Shipper on Deck: For Mike and Mara, of course. As noted below, he wasn't fond of the idea of Asher and Rose together but he eventually changed his mind.
- Ship Tease: With Evelyn and a bit with Rose. He ends up with Evelyn while Rose dies with Asher pining after her.
- It seems he might be starting to like Eliza once she shows up too.
- Shipping Torpedo: He tries to discourage Rose from getting together with Asher for two reasons, the first being so that Evelyn can get with Asher and the second is his concern that Rose would be hurt if she was with Asher. He actually seems to change his mind in the epilogue, stating that Asher and Rose would've made a good couple if not for her death.
- The Smart Guy: Compared to everyone else, Matt likes to think things through and work through them in a clever way.
- The Snark Knight: He is the biggest Deadpan Snarker in the series, and doesn't refrain from taking potshots at himself either.
- So Proud of You: He says this to Asher as they're standing over Rose's grave. He's proud of him for unearthing Rose's kind side.
- The Spock: He always keeps his emotions in check and is the brains out of the boys.
- Stepford Snarker: When he finally reaches his breaking point, he lets loose a series of hurtful words with the purpose of diminishing his value as a person, hinting that his normal persona is a front.
- The Stoic: Perhaps the one who keeps his emotions in check the most.
- Straight Man: To practically every other character he interacts with regularly.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Matthew is definitely the coolest of the main cast and he also has a warm side underneath it.
- Survivor Guilt: In the sequel, he and Asher are at Rose's grave. Matt nonchalantly mentions that he should've died instead of Rose. He's trying to hide it, but it's clear he's haunted by this.
- Tall, Dark, and Snarky: He's stated to be the tallest in the group, has dark hair and a darker shade of blue eyes and the snarking part goes without saying.
- Took a Level in Badass: In the beginning, he was an ordinary snarky teen with little to no care in the world. By the end, he's facing a mass murderer with courage and determination despite being weaker.
- Took a Level in Cheerfulness: He's more upbeat in the sequel.
- Took a Level in Idealism: Compared to his portrayal in the first book, Matthew is less inclined to act or think pessimistically in the sequel.
- Took a Level in Kindness: Although he maintains his snark, he's more involved and open with his friends.
- True Love Is Boring: Seems to be headed down this route with Evelyn in the sequel as he's getting exasperated with her Attention Whore and Clingy Jealous Girl tendencies.
- Verbal Tic: His is the word "dude".
- Wacky Parent, Serious Child: With his father Samuel.
- Would Hit a Girl: In self-defense, anyways. He's the one to hold off Jordi in the end till the authorities arrive.
Michael Henderson
Mike is the bubbly one. He's energetic and optimistic, though not necessarily well-liked or a social expert. He never gives up and sometimes even acts as the conscience.
- Acquired Situational Narcissism: It can be argued that this is what Mike goes through in the beginning after befriending Rose, Nate and Dexter.
- Affectionate Nickname: Mike or Mikey.
- Ambiguously Bi: More so than Asher or Matt, being a fan of hugs and physical contact. He also tells Mara outright that he loves Matt and is possessive of him, not to mention his constant jokey flirting.
- Badass Adorable: Very adorable and a Nice Guy not to be messed with.
- Bearer of Bad News: He was the first one to know and inform the gang about Dexter's death.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: He ends up the receiving end of this, courtesy of Rose, Nate and Dexter.
- Beneath the Mask: More evident in the sequel where he revealed his more cynical and quiet side, most likely hidden under his smiles before.
- Berserk Button: Bully his loved ones and you'll see the less likable side of him.
- Also, saying that he's short. HE'S NOT SHORT, HE'S AVERAGE HEIGHT!.
- Beta Couple: Mike's relationship takes a backseat to the complicated relationships of the other characters. However, they start having drama in the sequel...
- Beware the Nice Ones: Don't you dare push his buttons.
- Big Brother Bully: Heavily downplayed. Mike is notably ruder to his brothers Austin and Zach, viewing them as Annoying Younger Sibling but it's a lot, lot better than anything Mara's older brother Xavier might say or do.
- Big Brother Instinct: His protectiveness of his friends may stem from having younger siblings, although he is not the oldest in the friend group.
- Big Guy, Little Guy: The shortest of the boys (despite his insistence otherwise) while Matt is the tallest.
- Break the Cutie: Originally, Mike's spirit was unbreakable as The Pollyanna of the team. The sequel comes around, and he Took a Level in Cynic and became quieter and moodier.
- Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Inverted. As seen below, he's not exactly the type of guy to hit on many girls, he only flirts with Mara, and some of his comments are definitely...interesting.
- Catchphrase: He adopts "I'M NOT SHORT, I'M AVERAGE HEIGHT!" as this in the second book.
- Childhood Friends: According to Matt, Mike has been his Only Friend for a long time.
- Compressed Vice: Mike's desire to be In with the In Crowd is never mentioned again. Lampshaded by Matt's shock at his friend's sudden change in behavior.
- The Conscience: He's mostly this to Matt, and it extends to the rest of his friends too.
- Cool Big Bro: To his three younger brothers.
- Covert Pervert: You can't find a sweeter soul than his...but you'd be surprised at some of his more risque flirts. He doesn't actually ogle other girls, only his girlfriend Mara.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: You don't even think of looking at Mara funny.
- Cuddle Bug: He's very fond of giving hugs. Maybe a little too much...
- Curtains Match the Window: Both his eyes and hair are brown. He has the distinction of being the only protagonist to have this.
- Cynicism Catalyst: He Took a Level in Cynic starting with the revelation that Mara has Self-Harm tendencies and hid an eating disorder from everyone.
- Deadpan Snarker: You'd have to be one to be Matt's best friend, apparently.
- Endearingly Dorky: He's definitely the dorkiest of the male cast and is a cutie.
- Everyone Has Standards: Like his friends, he doesn't think that bullies deserve to be killed.
- First Friend: To Matt.
- First Love: He's this to Mara.
- Foil: To his girlfriend Mara.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to his foolish brothers Austin and Zach.
- The Gadfly: He's pretty cheeky and loves to tease people around him, especially Matt and Mara.
- Genki Guy: Matt wonders how he's been able to handle Mike for extended periods of time.
- Good Is Not Soft: He doesn't have the Beware the Nice Ones listed for nothing...If you are doing something heinous, he will call you out on it.
- Green-Eyed Monster: He's this over both Mara and Matt.
- Height Angst: "I'M NOT SHORT, I'M AVERAGE HEIGHT!"
- Heroic Sacrifice: He lives, but as Mara points out, it was pretty idiotic to just jump at Jordi with no plan.
- I Did What I Had to Do: In contrast to Eliza, Mike adopts this attitude after he and Eliza spy on Mara to find out why she's acting so strange, even name dropping the trope to reassure the former that they did the right thing.
- Insecure Love Interest: He ends up indulging in this himself in the sequel after spying on Mara cause her to avoid him, even telling Jordan that he wouldn't be surprised if she wanted to break up.
- Insistent Terminology: He's not short, okay? He's average height.
- In with the In Crowd: He gets offered to be friends by Rose, Nate and Dexter, and unexpectedly change character because of it. He snaps out when he realizes they were only using him to hurt Mara.
- Jerkass Has a Point: He's a Nice Guy, but whenever he calls someone out in an unflattering manner, he's mostly spot on with the criticism, which is usually seen in the sequel.
- The Kirk: Matt even mentions how Mike balances out the boys in the group.
- Knight in Sour Armor: Mike Took a Level in Cynic in the sequel following the revelation that Mara has been hiding a Self-Harm habit but he by no means gave up on doing the right thing.
- The Lancer: To Matt.
- Leeroy Jenkins: His Heroic Sacrifice can be seen as this, especially since it was rather impulsive and honestly idiotic to charge a strong girl with a gun, as Mara tells him afterwards.
- Like Parent, Like Child: Takes after both his parents.
- Like Parent, Like Spouse: Like Mara's mother Dianna, Mike is a Nice Guy.
- The Napoleon: He's actually much nicer than most examples but still, mentioning his height is bound to elicit an explosive reaction out of him.
- Nice Guy: More apparent with him than it is with Matt and Asher.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Shared with Eliza. The Shoot the Dog act described below ended up backfiring really badly on Mara.
- Official Couple: With Mara.
- Only Friend: He was this to Matt ever since they met.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: He rarely gets called Michael. Only Eliza refers to him as such on a regular basis.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally playful and flirty Mike takes on a serious character, much to the surprise of Matt and Mara. He was gonna tell them that Dexter was killed.Matt to Mara: Only something serious would turn him into that.
- Plucky Comic Relief: Mike occasionally slips into this role, intentionally acting buffoonish to alleviate tension. This is even lampshaded by Matt twice. When Mike is around, your day lightens up.
- The Pollyanna: He's never seen brought down by events around him, even when getting shot himself, all he does is reassure Mara it'll all be okay.
- Refuse to Rescue the Disliked: Mike rudely objects to Asher's Save the Jerk mentality with Rose on accounts of her attempts to hurt Mara before and honestly, could you blame him?
- Relationship Upgrade: After his Love Confession, he and Mara are officially an item.
- Sarcastic Devotee: He never fails to criticize Matt when needed. He also sticks with him no matter what and refuses to leave him.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Mike is the Sensitive Guy to Asher's Manly Man.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: With Austin and Zach.
- Single-Target Sexuality: Unlike Matt and Asher, Mike only has eyes for Mara. He can only tease her, and he's never seen doing anything remotely suggestive with any other girl ever.Mike: I wouldn't trade Mara for anything in the world.
- She Is Not My Girlfriend: Before becoming an Official Couple, he would deny that there's anything between him and Mara.
- Shipper on Deck: A HUGE one for Matt and Evelyn. He's also mentioned to be this for Rose and Asher. In the sequel, he constantly teases Asher about Eliza.
- Ship Tease: With Mara, and they successfully get together.
- Shoot the Dog: Mike only wanted to find out what Mara was hiding so they could help her, and knowing she wouldn't say with ease, he enlisted the help of Eliza to essentially spy on her. He seems to feel bad about it though, and so does Eliza.
- Sibling Rivalry: More so with Austin and Zach, as Mike's more fond of Henry.
- Stepford Smiler: When he's troubled by their problems in the first book, he'll keep a smile on until he's alone.
- The Tease: Acts this way towards Mara, naturally.
- Tiny Schoolboy: Compared to Matt and Asher.
- Took a Level in Badass: He undergoes this when facing Jordan without fear, and even performing a Heroic Sacrifice that he lives through.
- Took a Level in Cynic: Seems to be going down this route in the sequel. He's by no means less kind than he was before, but he is less cheerful and outgoing than before.
- Troubled, but Cute: Grows more into this in the sequel.
- Twice Shy: He had this with Mara for a while.
- Verbal Tic: Likely stemming from having siblings, Mike uses the word "bro" quite often.
- Was Too Hard on Him: After he goes Refuse to Rescue the Disliked on Rose and angering Asher, Mike privately tells Mara that he feels this afterwards, prompting her to comfort him.
- Would Hit a Girl: He charges Jordan when she badmouths Matt in the finale, leading to him getting shot. It can be assumed that he would only do this when absolutely necessary, given his usual nature.
Supporting Characters
Aside from the main six, there are other characters that interact with them throughout the story. The Bullies
A trio of popular and jerky bullies who antagonize the six. Despite that, it would later appear that they might be more than what they seem.- Big Bad Wannabe: For a High School Slice of Life story, these three would be the closest thing to a Big Bad. Except here, you have a hidden Serial Killer Villain Protagonist who's much more dangerous.
- Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Nate, Dexter and Rose respectively.
- Establishing Character Moment: They are introduced by picking on an easy target (Evelyn) and backing down when Jordi shows up.

- Harmless Villain: Needless to say, they're not actually a threat.
- Popular Is Evil: They're all stated to be popular despite the jerkish attitudes.

- Villainy-Free Villain: They're big jerks but at they remain harmless teens at the end of the day. This really stands out once you find out Jordan committed murder.

- Break the Haughty: Gets this hard when Dexter and Nate die.

- Tears of Fear: She sheds them when she's taken hostage.
- Technicolor Eyes: Green ones like Nate.
- Together in Death: Her final words spoken to Asher imply this.

Nate Andrews
Nate is a cocky jock. He is a tall blondie and he is strong. This makes him popular among everyone else, despite being a Jerkass.
- Asshole Victim: Despite being a jerk, no one in the story thinks he deserved death.
- Berserk Button: Mocking him and/or Rose.
- Break the Haughty: Gets this when Dexter dies.
- The Bully
- Captain Obvious: See his image quote for his "insult" towards Evelyn...
- Entitled Bastard: Interesting example. The first thing he does when Dexter's body turns up with a note that has Matt's name on it, he goes to tell the latter about it, and he seems more concerned about wanting to know why than warn Matt that he's a potential target.
- Everyone Has Standards: He's horrified at the murders.
- False Friend: To Mike.
- Forgotten Fallen Friend: He and Dexter become this to Rose.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Dexter.

Friend of Nate who shares a lot with him. Same build and hair color, as well as the rotten attitude, although Dexter speaks less.

- Asshole Victim: Despite being a jerk, no one in the story thinks he deserved death.
- The Bully
- False Friend: To Mike.
- Forgotten Fallen Friend: He and Nate become this to Rose.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Nate.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: Implied to have this.

- Killed Offscreen: We don't see him getting shot by Jordan.
- Platonic Life-Partners: With Rose.
- The Quiet One: Compared to Rose and Nate.
- Sacrificial Lamb: He gets the least amount of Character Focus out of the bullies and is the first to be killed off to introduce the murder plot line.
- We Hardly Knew Ye: By virtue of being Jordan's first victim.
Other Classmates
Characters that are neither in the main cast's circle nor the bullies'.Evan Clark
Matt's nervous and socially awkward deskmate. Although he's a victim of the former's sharp tongue as anyone else, Evan finds Matt's company to be comforting.
- Ambiguously Gay: This is fueled by Mike's teasing of Matt's desire to sit with Evan. On top of that, he's never stated to have a crush on any girl.

- Small Role, Big Impact: Evan himself shows up a few times, but the secret admirer note that he urged Matt to write becomes the catalyst for the whole story.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: See above.
- Unwitting Pawn: Becomes this to Jordan in the end.
Aaron
This is a kid who just seems to go unnoticed very easily. He's usually down in the dumps, and talks lazily about depressing things.
- Ambiguously Brown: The only character to have a tan but it's never touched upon.
- Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason why he seems to become friends with Evan in the end is because the latter actually bothered to reach out to him and get him to open up.
