Until this year, Ousai Academy was an all girls' school. Takatoshi Tsuda, one of the first boys to go to the now co-ed school, finds himself confronted with Shino Amakusa, the student council president, because his tie isn't tight enough. In a short amount of time, he meets Suzu Hagimura, the treasurer, and Aria Shichijou, the secretary, finding himself roped in as vice president. According to Shino, a male perspective will help them along. As Takatoshi is about to find out, the student council, and the students of Ousai, are very very strange.

Seitokai Yakuindomo ("The Student Council Officers") is a yonkoma manga by Ujiie Tozen, which was serialized from 2007 to 2021 (starting out in Magazine Special, then moving to Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2008). It was adapted into an anime in July 2010 by GoHands. Multiple OVAs were released periodically. A second season called Seitokai Yakuindomo * ^note The asterisk is pronounced "bleep." Yes, it's for that. followed in January 2014. A full theatrical movie was released on the 21st of July 2017 to celebrate the series' ten year anniversary. A second theatrical movie was announced for Summer 2020.

Tropes # to B

• Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Subverted. While the beginning — with quirky, ridiculously talented girls forcing a mostly normal guy into their ranks — seems like a setup for this, all of the student council tasks that are shown are relatively mundane.
• Accidental Pervert: Generally averted, despite all the innuendo and the like.
  • Takatoshi once walked in as Shino was almost done buttoning up her shirt. She scolded him for not knocking, and he wondered why she was so agitated when she was completely dressed.
  • A slightly more pervy example was when Takatoshi and Shino were walking home when it started raining, and he offered to let Shino wait out the rain at his house. When they walk into the living room, they find a mostly undressed Mori changing (she was only wearing her uniform shirt at that point and was just about to take it off).
  • In Chapter 378, the Judo club stay so late that when they are leaving, they find the school gate is closed. Mutsumi suggests they just scale the gate, and when Chiri objects, pointing out there'd be trouble if anyone saw Mutsumi leaps onto the gate in a crouching stance and says if that happens, they could just apologise. The Student Council are still outside, and Takatoshi in particular has a nice unobstructed view up Mutsumi's skirt.
• Actor Allusion: In episode 10 of season 1, Shino is shown cowering in fear and covering her ears◊ in the way Mio did. Bonus points, considering it was the exact situation (i.e., Tsuda recalls how he injured his finger with a broken plate).
  Shino: D-Don't! I can't stand painful stories!
• Adaptation Expansion:
  • The anime adds some scenes and builds upon most of the gags from the yonkoma. An extreme example would be the two Class Trip arcs; what happened at the locations of the trip were never narrated in the manga.
  • The anime's production, character design, characterization and stylistic choices made all the characters considerably more expressive than how they are in the manga, which is known for its simplistic art style and deadpan delivery.
• Alertness Blink: Omnipresent.
• All Just a Dream:
  • It turns out that the girls going decent in the beginning of Season 1, Episode 5 is just a figment in Takatoshi's sleep.
  • Shino dreamt that she became an idol singer in Season 2, Episode 6.
• All Men Are Perverts: Takatoshi is instantly assumed to have a Porn Stash, and have a desire to tear down the walls of the girls' bathrooms, just because he's a guy. The rest of the guys, though, have hints of this, judging by how they think of the formerly all-girl Ousai Academy as a window of opportunity to get hooked up with the women. Just take a look at Takatoshi's classmate, Kenji Yanagimoto.
  • In chapter 3 Shino finds a lost wallet. She reasons it belongs to a girl because there's no condom in it.
• All Periods Are PMS: Mostly averted. Instead, periods are treated as merely inconvenient and uncomfortable, without provoking a change in personality for the girls experiencing them. Not that that's saying much. Probably the only menace is the excuse to throw around some off-color humor an effort to Squick out The One Guy.
• All There in the Manual: Some details of characters are mentioned in the author's notes that accompany the chapters. For example, the third member of the Eiryou Student Council alongside Uomi and Mori went unnamed since her first appearance until she gives her name in one of the author notes. For the record, it's Aoba.
• All Women Are Lustful: The actual story. To what extent? Think of it this way: remember that relay commentator in Season 1, Episode 9? Yeah, she's a minor character... who refers to Takatoshi as the "school's breeding horse". ^* Incidentally, a stallion kept for breeding is known as a stud. And most of the crowd (nine tenths of it are women, mind you) cheers on his new title.
  • To elaborate: Shino can't go five minutes without making a sex joke, Aria is into bondage (among other things), Nene is always building and/or using a vibrator, Yokoshima-sensei will do anything with a Y chromosome, etc. There are a grand total of 6 girls who don't think about sex during at least half of their screen time: Suzu, Mitsuba, Chiri, Kaede, Toki, and Furuya.
    • There is a distinction, though. Shino flat-out states that her antics are more to elicit a response from Tsuda or others in the very first episode. It is much more difficult to tell whether or not Aria is joking or serious.
  • Later chapters add more girls who aren't sex-obsessed: Koyama-sensei and Eiryou High School Vice President Mori.
• Ambiguous Ending: Treading between this and No Ending, the manga concludes with no resolution as to which of the girls ends up with Takatoshi, and it's overall inconclusive.
• Anachronic Order:
  • Certain parts of the OVAs are taken from random chapters of the manga, so there could be a part about going to a ski resort in the winter in the middle of an episode that revolved around the summer.
  • It's also used for a joke at the end of Season 2. It's graduation and Shino and Aria leave carrying what appear to be rolled up diplomas. Then it turns out that it takes place during graduation of the previous year and they're just carrying sushi rolls as the captions tell you to go back and enjoy season 2 from the beginning. ^note You can catch on to the joke earlier if you pay attention since Tsuda is said to be a first year student when he's called up to give a speech.
• Animated Shock Comedy: At least 90% of the show's jokes are either shock humor or about bodily functions. However, this is largely confined to jokes, and there's very little sexual imagery.
• Animation Bump: Most fans agree that the second season's animation quality is noticeably better than the first, which was already pretty good itself. It also indulges in more Scenery Porn.
• April Fools' Plot: The one in 2018 had Shino trying to pull a prank on Takatoshi (a failure because he didn't react as she expected) and then discussing this trope and see what else they can come up with to prank the rest of the student council. Takatoshi gets into the spirit of the day and provides the punchline when a prop ring gets stuck on Shino's finger (long story) and drops the line "actually, I just proposed to the president", which levels the room and leaves Shino, Aria and Suzu with a massive Heroic BSoD that only Aria barely manages to get out of when he tells them it was just a lie.
• Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Played with, averted and Played for Laughs. Most of the girls in the series (excluding mainly Suzu, Toki and Mutsumi) proposition Takatoshi to do outrageous sexual stuff with them. However, first, he never acts upon it, second, they're usually messing around with him, and third, in spite of the themes explored in the manga and the heavy suggestions, not a single NSFW moment has happened throughout its duration. As a matter of fact, most of said girls like Takatoshi in the first place precisely because he's a gentleman. In a way, it's almost like they want him to be that way, when he's overwhelmingly not.
• Arranged Marriage: Aria gets one in chapter 89 to facilitate a bit of Ship Tease when she practices a Boyfriend Bluff with Takatoshi. The bluff never comes into play, however, since the marriage is quickly cancelled when it's found out that the prospective fiancé is one of Dejima's "valuable clients."
• Art Evolution: After a decade of publication, the character features eventually became softer and more stylized. Compare a page from Chapter 3 with a page from Chapter 549, showing that the characters are overall more joyful and cuter in design.
• Art Shift: Imagine Spots are usually portrayed like this, with the style changing to match the genre they're lampooning at the moment.
• Ass Shove: mentioned in Chapter 50. Apparently shoving an enema ^note For you Americans: enemas in Japan contain only about 2 tablespoons of glycerin solution. was a common prank in Ousai when Yokoshima was a student there. Yokoshima responded by... fist-fucking the shover.
• Attempted Rape:
  • Implied. Yokoshima-sensei's effort to lock Takatoshi up and "attack" him does not please the poor boy even in the slightest bit.
  • When the student council first went to the beach together accompanied by Yokoshima-sensei (in order to see if it was a suitable location for a school trip), a guy literally credited as "Beach Playboy" tried to pick Shino up. On failing, he tried his luck with Yokoshima-sensei, who scares him off with her lustful eagerness. Later, as he rests on a floating bed on the ocean, she creeps up underneath him in a parody of Jaws and, based on his screams, has her way with him.
  • Later, Aria uses the Hands-On Approach when teaching him tennis in an attempt to stick her strap-on up his butt.
• Batman Gambit: In chapter 331, Hata tries to pressure the student council into making up problems for the newspaper's new quiz section. She does this by taking Tsuda by the arm and asking him to do it in a typical spoiled girlfriend fashion, to which he points out that he's still going to say no. Turns out her plan was actually to make the other three jealous, leading them to volunteer for the task just to make her let him go.

• Bedmate Reveal: Invoked, adding Smoking Hot Sex while at it.
• Beware the Nice Ones: While Takatoshi usually just puts up with the girls' antics, he's capable of quite the intimidating glare when they go too far. It helps that these moments also tend to be some of the rare occasions that his normally ignored stature is invoked.
• Big Fancy House: Aria's estate contains huge tracts of (lavish) land.
• Bishie Sparkle: Used in quite a number of situations, like the Bishōnen examples.
• Black Comedy Rape:
  • Implied; what Yokoshima-sensei did to that blonde, tan guy at the beach. She certainly seemed satisfied with herself, though she immediately went to go satisfy her other vice. And she does it again when she spots him on the beach one year later.
  • And Shino getting molested by a deer.
  • And the Attempted Rape example.
• Boarding School: Chapter 265 revealed Ousai was one, but the dormitory has fell into disuse for several years. That chapter was about the Student Council emptying the dormitory to prepare for its demolition.
• Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: A strong dynamic with the cast. Ranko even notes that without Takatoshi there to tsukkomi, Shino has no one to play off.
  • When Takatoshi isn't around, Shino or (primarily) Suzu will take center stage, depending on who's boke.
  • Even Suzu makes note of Takatoshi's absence when she's the only one left to take up the role. In an OVA episode, Suzu actually suffers physical and mental fatigue being the designated Tsukkomi when Takatoshi was absent from school for one day from an illness.
  • Kaede goes Oh, Crap! when she realizes that because Takatoshi and Suzu are both on their second year trip. She has to Tsukkomi for the student council which includes Kotomi.
  • Takatoshi observes that Kotomi and Tokki have this sort of vibe, and believes that's the reason the two get along so well.
  • On the Eiryou Student Council Mori is the tsukkomi to Uomi's boke, and when she and Takatoshi are together it isn't unusual for both of them to react to Uomi.
  • That said, the cast sometimes switches roles depending on the situation. Suzu is usually a tsukkomi, unless the situation involves her height, the paranormal or Takatoshi in a romantic sense. Even Tokki and Kotomi sometimes trade roles, such as Tokki being clumsy and leading to Kotomi to point things out.
• Bookends: The last Student Council Rule for both seasons have the characters standing in the same positions as the first ones, but with the trees starting to bud instead of in full bloom.
  • Similarly, the final chapter of the manga has the Ousai Student Council gathered under the cherry tree they first met under. It's even lampshaded.
• Book Smart: All three female members of the Ousai school council with Shino and Aria being rivals at their grade, #1 and #2 respectively, and Suzu being a Teen Genius with an IQ of 180.
• Born in the Wrong Century: Exaggerated with Furuya who, being Shino's predecessor, is at most two years older than her. Yet she uses Japanese slang from The '80s unironically and is so bad with technology that she uses a pocket abacus instead of a calculator.
• Boyfriend Bluff:
  • Aria claims that Takatoshi is her boyfriend to get rid of some persistant pickup artists at the beach. This changes to husband when she sees Suzu with him. Suzu is less than pleased to be cast as their kid.
  • When the Student Council is helping Furuya run a beachside restaurant during the summer, Shino, Aria and Furuya all claim Takatoshi is their boyfriend to deflect guys asking them out. Unfortunately, this leads to the customers wondering if Takatoshi is a playboy or stringing the girls on.
• Brain Bleach:
  • Takatoshi, pretty mild expression but... he does it every freaking time.
  • Chapter 43, Poor Suzu has been scarred for life. (By showing off her ability to memorise a book by flipping through it on what turns out to be an erotic magazine.)
• Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: In an extra chapter in Volume 14, Mitsuba laments the fact that the vending machines ran out of Char Siu Ramen (Asian BBQ pork), so she buys the Char Siu, the miso soup and the fried noodles all separately and just eats them, causing Chiri to chide her because it's not the same, even when the same ingredients end up in her stomach.
• Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Lots of normally mundane conversations end up like this.
• Breaking the Fourth Wall:
  • The Ousai Academy boys (minus Takatoshi) in episode 9 of season 1 talk about how happy they should be to take part in a harem setting, but are disappointed to discover that they're largely irrelevant to the overall story.
    We get it! We have nothing to do with it!
  • Also, in the last episode:
    Aria: The year only felt like 3 months.
    Shino: Putting it in anime terms, it was about 13 episodes.
    Tsuda: Don't keep breaking the fourth wall like this.
  • Quite literally when, in episode 13 of season 1, Takatoshi knocks down the backdrop Hata was using for her made-up flashback. Hata is trapped underneath.
  • Also in the same episode, when discussing Magical Mako versus Hakuouki, Takatoshi pulls out an issue of Animage magazine and consults the TV listings.
  • Aria in Season 2, episode 3, winks to the audience while posing in a bikini.
  • The "Ousai Academy Student Council Rules" section of the OVA opening has all the voiced characters in a recording booth as if they are about to record an episode, and Suzu and Aria are only mimicking the whistle and drum.
  • Suzu breaks the wall in her first scene of the second season, noting that the camera is deliberately shooting at a bad angle to emphasize her lack of verticality.
• Brick Joke:
  • Tsuda gets teased that he's an "M" in the first season. Come episode 6 of season 2, he also learns that Mutsumi's self defense lessons work on "M"s.
  • Chapter 377 has a gag mid-chapter about Aria making remarks about braids like Igarashi's to use them as an S&M whip. The chapter goes elsewhere when Tsuda's pants zipper breaks while in the bathroom and he has to ask Suzu to cover him by standing in front of him. When Tsuda and Suzu make it to the Student Council room and they have to explain their odd behavior, Igarashi has undone her braids and Aria tied her own hair in a braid, both presumably due to Aria's earlier remarks.
• Bridal Carry:
  • Shino says that periods are hard to bear with, so if she's given the chance, she won't walk. Instead, she clings to Takatoshi◊.
  • Suzu hurts her leg in Chapter 59/OVA 6, and is insistent that she not be carried piggyback while wearing a skirt.
    Shino: Then carry her in your arms, like that.
    Tsuda: Yeah, I'll carry you like this.
    Suzu (thinking): Looks like they aren't going to say, "Like a princess."
• Brother–Sister Incest:
  • This is subverted in the manga, where Kotomi is just as perverted, but not towards Takatoshi in particular. This characterization is anime-only.
  • Played for laughs during a trip to the beach, when Shino forgets to get out of the "sister" role and forbids Tsuda to hug her in a dream with the words "incest is a sin!". Besides this, it seems that his younger sister thinks too much about such things ...
  • The movie that the student council helps the movie club make apparently involves a bit of this, as Takatoshi is chosen as the main hero and Suzu opposite him as the movie's heroine...who happens to be his little sister.
• Bunny-Ears Lawyer: For all the girls' eccentricities, they are an effective and competent student council.

Tropes C to D

• The Cameo: The first OVA has the unusual example of the show giving a one-off appearance and a line to a character that appears only in the first season's end credits, which is a separate mini-story entirely unrelated to the series proper.
  • The idol group Triple Booking initially appeared as cameos (their anime versions voiced by the main trio's seiyuu no less), but later made proper appearances within the manga.
• Canon Discontinuity: Invoked and Played for Laughs in season 1's final/recap episode, when one of the embellished flashbacks turned out to be real, to Takatoshi's horror.
• Canon Immigrant: The judo club members, lampshaded in manga's chapter 96.
• Can't Get Away with Nuthin': In Chapter 62, Shino is happy that she won the beauty pageant, but begins pouting when she learns that Tsuda voted for Kotomi. Tsuda then explains that he knew that Shino would win, so he voted for Kotomi because he thought that she wouldn't get many votes otherwise... Cue Kotomi pouting.
• Casting Gag: Furuya enjoys old-world snacks, uses 80's slang, does her calculations on an abacus and even her fanservice is old-school. She's played by Fumi Hirano, best known as the voice of Lum in the 80's series Urusei Yatsura.
• Catch Your Death of Cold: First part of a triple-trope domino effect. Takatoshi catches a cold within seconds of giving up his umbrella. Freeze Sneeze ensues... and Takatoshi winds up bedridden for a whole day on the next episode.
• Caught with Your Pants Down:
  • Played With. Shino is concerned about her breasts, and then remembers a rumour that they become bigger if you massage them. So she starts to rub her breasts over her shirt, when Takatoshi walks in. It's quite awkward, but then Shino tries to save face. How? By declaring that she's 'just sexually frustrated'. Takatoshi mutters that that isn't a very good excuse.
  • Played straight in Chapter 320, when Takatoshi and Shino walk into the Tsuda house living room and find Mori changing. She later begs Takatoshi to keep the whole thing quiet, but they act so guilty Kotomi wonders if something is going on.
• Censor Steam: Season 1, Episode 7's bath house scene. They later use if for any occasions where the girls are in the bath.
• Character Catchphrase:
  • When someone sees Suzu as a kid, this long speech happens...
    Suzu: I'm Suzu Hagimura! Just like you, I am 16 years old. Also, I am a returnee with an IQ score of 180. I can speak English fluently and can do 10-digit numerical computations in my head! Well? Do you still treat me like a kid now?
  • Hata-san has "This will freakin' sell!" when taking fanservice pictures.
  • Kotomi's "Cowgirl!" ^note referring to the sex position (Usually said out of nowhere.)
• Character Exaggeration: The anime amplifies all the character traits from the yonkoma, but it's especially more glaring in the case of Suzu, who is portrayed as short-fused, belligerent and potty-mouthed. In the yonkoma, Suzu is one of the most composed characters, one of the best behaved, and one who is especially noted to be the most patient, especially compared to the other girls at the student council.
• Cherry Blossoms: A step ahead of most school-based Japanese shows as "Ousai" is literally "Cherry-talent." The flower found its way on the school logo and is also used in the second season's opening.
• The Chikan: Only referenced, never explained in episode one. Takatoshi finds himself in a subway car nearly exclusively populated by women. To keep from being falsely accused as a molester, he assumes the same position as all the other men: riding with his hands held high. It's a social issue that's played for laughs, like most other things in the show.
• Class Trip: Shino and Aria's trip to Kyoto takes up Season 1, Episode 3. Takatoshi and Suzu's trip to Okinawa takes up Season 2, Episode 3.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: As time goes on and they begin to fall for him, the girls of the Ousai Student Council increasingly become these in regards to Takatoshi (which he fails to notice or recognise).
  • Kotomi sometimes acts like this when she notices just how popular Takatoshi is among girls. It's occasionally used for Bait-and-Switch gags (such as the time she complained that he was receiving way too much chocolate on Valentine's Day... because she was trying to diet and can't resist helping him eat them all), but on other occasions Big Brother Attraction seems to come into play. This being Kotomi, it's hard to tell how serious she's being.
  • In chapter 356, the Student Council wins at a TV contest and an overjoyed Suzu and Aria hug Shino, who answers the final question, at the same time. When Takatoshi tries to follow suit, Suzu and Aria tighten their grip on the girl, effectively restraining Shino and leaving no room for him to hug her, all while none of the girls loses their smiles.
  • There's a similar moment in Polly Copelin's introductory chapter. When Hata interviews her and asks what surprises her the most about Japan, Polly says it's how differently people greet each other and tries to demonstrate how she usually does it.
    Polly: [approaches Takatoshi as if to kiss him on the check] In my country, we do...
    Shino, Aria, and Suzu: [suddenly hug-restrain her all three at once] Hugs!! Hug time!!
  • In chapter 405, the Ousai and Eiryou councils are on opposite sides of a snowball fight competition. Takatoshi offers to draw enemy fire while Suzu goes for Eiryou's flag, but when Mori trips he catches her and asks if she's okay. Upon seeing this, everyone else on the field pelts them with snowballs (except for an annoyed Suzu, who successfully takes Eiryou's flag while grumbling Takatoshi is drawing fire from both friend and foe).
  • In chapter 453, Hata observes that Mutsumi immediately goes all out against her opponent from Seikou Girl's Academy... because said opponent's name happened to be Hanayo Tsuda which kinda made it sound like they were married.
• Clip Show: Subverted. The second half of Season 1, Episode 13, looks like it's going to be the student council reflecting on their memories of the past year, but it quickly turns absurd when they flash back to events that never happened, never can happen and, in the case of Mutsumi, are in a completely different genre. It gets weirder because apparently Tsuda's souvenir changed to conform to Shino's warped memory, causing Tsuda to go into a short Heroic BSoD.

• Cluster F-Bomb: When a foreigner unwittingly pushed Suzu's Napoleonic Berserk Button:

  Unnamed foreigner: Thank you...
  Suzu: Yeah.
  Unnamed foreigner: ...Little girl!
  Suzu: Argh!
  (Suzu flails with rage while Takatoshi restrains her, shouting "Wait-toh!" between struggles)
  Suzu: Fu*k you! Mother fu*ker! Fu** ***!
• Color Failure: As expected of a gag manga, but special mention for the female trio of the student council when the Principal asked whether or not Tsuda had a girl on his mind and he replied with Hata. ^note Because he feels uneasy when she points her camera on him.
• Comically Missing the Point: The source of so many gags.
  • A great example is in Chapter 89; Tsuda and Aria are practicing pretending to be boyfriend and girlfriend in order to get her out of an arranged marriage. Shino, who knows they are pretending, still feels irritated when she sees them together. This makes her wonder if she's in love...with Aria.
  • Another great example is in chapter 150.005, where Shino basically makes an indirect confession towards Tsuda by saying the only thing she isn't good at is love (while talking directly to him). This leads Tsuda to claim that it stinks, since he thought she was talking about Koi fish (Since love and koi sound similar in japanese).
  • When Tsuda says something nice and touching about Kaede, she blushes and her heart starts racing — naturally, she concludes that being around boys is dangerous to her health because he heightened her blood pressure.
• Comic-Book Time: The manga's time stopped passing when Shino and Aria became seniors, Takatoshi and Suzu became sophomores, and Kotomi became a freshman at Ousai (beginning at around Chapter 33). As such, most of the subsequent events and characters introduced henceforth, for the rest of the 500+ chapters to date, take place during the second year after Takatoshi enrolled in the beginning of the manga.
• Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: In Chapter 281, Suzu is upset at Tsuda because he grabbed her when she was falling from a stepstool and inadvertedly groped her breast, but did not notice it. She spends the day pouting at him, but relents because she breaks the hook of her skirt by refusing to let Tsuda carry a heavy box; bottomless, Suzu is then rescued again by Tsuda, who covers her with his blazer, which is several sizes bigger than her own.
• Conversational Troping: Shino brings up both the Late for School, Crash-Into Hello, Red String of Fate and the Disc-One Final Boss (along with mentions of Four Is Death and moving up the Sorting Algorithm of Evil).
• Corrupt the Cutie:
  • In chapter 115 Shino jokingly suggests that it's human nature to want to "defile what's pure" while staring pointedly at Tsuda.
  • The Judo Club accidentally do this to Mitsuba when she finds them reading a porn mag in the Judo Club room. She confiscates it and tries to turn it over to Takatoshi, who isn't sure how to respond to her going, "Please accept this!"
• Country Matters: Shino explaining the English phrase "Dry Eyes" by way of "Ma_ko aren't getting wet". "Eyes" in Japanese is "Manako", but the blank makes it look like the censored form of "manko," which is a vulgar Japanese word for female genitalia. This seems to be a favourite gag for the author; it also shows up in a couple of his other series.
• Covert Pervert: Nearly every female character (barring Suzu, Mutsumi, Kaede, Toki, and Mori) who appears happens to be one. Yes, even minor characters. How much "covert" applies is up for argument, though.
• Crash-Into Hello: Shino makes an exception regarding blind corners to the no running rule to encourage stereotypical romances leading from such events.
• Creative Closing Credits: The show has an unusual spin on this in that its first season's closing credits is an entirely separate mini-story with its own main character.
• Creepy Monotone: One of Hata's defining traits. Also used in the reading of the title cards for the "dried-squid-and-ta-ka-to-shi..." segments.
• Crossover:
  • Although Triple Booking from the author's previous Idol no Akahon made cameo appearances before, episode 6 of season 2 had Shino's dream essentially be an excuse for her to interact with the major characters of that series, and lampshade how Shino is an expy of Shiho.
  • The characters encounter Triple Booking properly in episode 9 of season 2.
  • Amano, Shino's elementary school friend and vice president, is also a character in another of the author's mangas, Joshidaisei Kateikyoushi Hamanaka Ai.
• Cut and Paste Comic:
  • Played with. The author often reuses panels for both this and for Identical Panel Gag comics. Some strips have repeated art for three or four panels with slight variations, while in other cases he may use reuse art between strips in a chapter. However, even with repeated art and panels, the art is always unique between chapters.
  • Another aspect of this is shown in the fact that in a great portion of the art in the manga, the characters don't open their mouths when they talk and/or sport soft smiles while saying outrageous jokes. This adds to the deadpan nature of the manga's humor.
• Cute Clumsy Girl:
  • Aria getting herself tangled with ropes and flags in various positions must make her quite the klutz!
  • Kotomi claims that the reason that she hasn't changed to the winter uniform is that she's now a dojikko.
  • Everyone seems to think Toki qualifies, despite looking like a Japanese Delinquent. Toki herself denies this, but her tendency to get lost and do things like forget to take off her socks in the bath don't help her case.
• Daydream Surprise: It looks like Takatoshi has finally given into the madness, discussing his habits with the girls... but it's in Shino's head.
• Deadpan Snarker:
  • Aria always smiles, but she gets especially cheery when she's making a dark or perverted joke (especially if it's a dig at someone else).
  • Takatoshi, if he's been listening to Aria or Shino for far too long.
  • Suzu.
  • Toki.
  • Hata. With extra deadpan.
  • Mori. She's normally polite about it, but sometimes switches into rougher language when things get too much for her (similar to Takatoshi).
• Depraved Bisexual: Dejima, Aria's maid.
• Did You Just Have Sex?:
  • When Takatoshi tells Shino that he and Suzu "made up" (after she was angry at him, mostly for being Oblivious to Love), Shino does a double take, since he is standing in front of nurse's office and holding some of Suzu's clothes. Actually, the hook of Suzu's skirt broke off, so he lent her his blazer to cover herself.
  • In chapter 454, Kotomi and Tokki are sharing a room during an overnight stay at a ryokan (along with the Student Council and judo club). Kotomi falls asleep, and abruptly wakes up to the following conversation between Tokki and Takatoshi:
  [Takatoshi is adjusting his clothes while a flushed and heavily breathing Tokki is lying on her stomach]
  Takatoshi: How was it?
  Tokki: Yeah, that felt amazing. You're really good, Onii-san.
  Kotomi: [freaks out in silence]
• Does This Remind You of Anything?: During an overnight stay at Aria's vacation cabin, the girls (along with Tsuda's sister) decide to play board games. Thinking that they're still missing a game member, they barge into Takatoshi's room with what can only be called "rape faces◊," and declare while giggling evilly that "You won't be getting any sleep tonight," and the scene ends with Tsuda screaming.
• Don't Explain the Joke: At one point Suzu is sitting down with her back turned in front of Tsuda while he's standing up and facing her. Due to height differences, it appears that she is giving him fellatio. Shino immediately says so out loud.
• Double Entendre: Utilized in a number of situations.
  (After Takatoshi talks about himself playing baseball and soccer in middle school)
  Shino: So, Tsuda, you like playing with your balls?
  Aria: Typical, since you're a boy.
  Takatoshi: Why does that sound so wrong?
• Double Standard:
  • In one strip of the manga: When Shino sees a girl with a hand in her pocket, she scolds her about manners. When she sees Takatoshi doing the same thing, she wonders if he's jerking off. Cue Takatoshi demanding equal treatment.
  • How many times does Takatoshi get sexually harassed by some of the girls, only for it to be treated as comedy?
• "Down Here!" Shot: The camera has a tendency to constantly miss Suzu. Often lampshaded with an arrow labeled "Suzu is down here."

Tropes E to M

• Ear Cleaning: Shino does this for Takatoshi in Season 1, Episode 5, which leads to some Innocent Innuendo.
• Entertainingly Wrong: Suzu's underclassmen tend to confuse her with a genius child who happens to attend high school, instead of the 17 year-old that she actually is. Since this is a source of admiration from them, it's treated as a positive misunderstanding.
• Ephebophile: Yokoshima-sensei is extremely pleased about finally having young male students to molest. If other scenes are to be believed, she's also a full-blown paedophile.
• Eroge and Hentai: One of many Sex Tropes referenced and invoked for comedy. Aria and Shino (and later on, Kotomi) are the go-to characters for that sort of thing.
• Erotic Eating:
  • Shino and Aria walked in on a conversation between Suzu and Takatoshi at a very bad time. From one angle, Suzu who was drinking milk from a box and Takatoshi, who was standing up, didn't look quite right.
  • Then, of course, there was Kotomi rushing out of her home with a big, long baguette shoved into her mouth.
  • Very blatantly parodied with Yokoshima-sensei with a chocolate banana and Dejima with a popsicle.
  • Aria eating a hot dog in episode 11 of season 2.
• Even Evil Has Standards: A mild example: while Shino and Aria are quite perverted and have no problem expressing their vulgar thoughts, they are rightfully disgusted by Yokoshima-sensei's self-professed lust for her six-year-old nephew.
• Everyone Can See It:
  • More and more people seem to slyly comment to Shino about her apparent feelings for Takatoshi. The third OVA has Uomi, a student council president from another school, express surprise that Shino isn't with Takatoshi when they later meet again in public.
  • Mutsumi isn't so subtle with her feelings towards him either, though most of the time she herself is oblivious to it.
  • When Eiryou's Vice President Mori is introduced, Shino, Suzu and Uomi are surprised and more than worried when they see how easily Takatoshi gets along with her. For example, during their fourth conversation, Takatoshi casually told her where he lives (in comparison, Shino only learnt his address when she tried to visit him while he was ill, Suzu learnt it from Shino, and Uomi only learnt it after they became relatives).
  • The pair of Sickeningly Sweethearts who always get scolded for their PDA were revealed to not have even confessed to each other for fear of ruining their friendship in Chapter 347.
• Exact Words: Hata promises not to tell anyone that the student council spent the night together at an inn. But she didn't say anything about not showing people the pictures she took of them. If she's not doing this, then she's Twisting the Words so that anything Tsuda says, when she interviews him, comes off as sounding like a pervert.
• Expressive Hair: Kotomi and Suzu have hairs that perk up depending on the situation.
• Expy
  • Yokoshima-sensei is an older expy of Shiho, appearance-wise.
  • Shiho of Triple Booking and Shino are expies of each other. In fact, all three members of Triple Booking and the three female members of the Student Council are expies of each other (Karuna is Aria with Takatoshi's serious personality and Yuuri is Suzu, only as young as she looks).
• Facial Dialogue: Between Tsuda and Suzu in OVA 7 while urging the other to do the Tsukkomi:
  Suzu: (Say something.)
  Tsuda: (You do it.)
• False Camera Effects: When the council watches a gravure interview to learn how to do interviews. Only problem is, the effect are WRONG for a DVD, they look like a broadcast with poor reception. Which is just silly.
• Fastball Special: In Chapter 301, during a volleyball game, Suzu somehow blocks a spike by Mutsumi in spite of not even being able to remotely reaching the bottom of the net. It's later shown that Nene picked her up to perform the block because they were both curious to see if they could pull it off.
• Fetish:
  • Mitsuba thinks that Takatoshi might have some sort of craze for perspiration. It crossed her mind when he was speaking to her right after one of her usual judo practice sessions.
  • Aria has a thing for, among (a lot) other things, enemas and S&M.
• First-Name Basis: In Season 2, Episode 9, the relatives of Uomi and the Tsudas get married. She then starts calling Takatoshi "Taka-kun" and has him and Kotomi call her "Onee-chan," much to her obvious delight.
  • Even earlier than that, when Mitsuba first meets Takatoshi in Season 1, Episode 2, she initially addresses him as "Tsuda-kun" before switching to "Takatoshi-kun." She was the only character who addressed him by his first name (besides Kotomi) until Uomi's introduction during the OVAs.
  • In book 12, there is a special chapter where Shino reads letters from fans, and the most popular one is, "What is Uomi's name?" Uomi dramatically replies her name is "Uomi Christina!", claiming to be half-Japanese. Mori, her Vice President, demands she answer properly.
• Flash Step: In episode 9 of season 2, the student council members watch Ranko Hata sighing and staring at the sky on the school roof. She then turns around, sees them, and they decide to give her some time to herself. However, the instant Ranko isn't visible outside anymore after the camera pans, she immediately appears in front of them inside the hallway, surprising them a little. And by a little, we mean Suzu and Takatoshi screamed in shock.
• Floorboard Failure: The main characters visit Shichijou Aria's house and are taken to an old storeroom. The floor breaks under Shino and Hata asks if there's a way to get under the floor to take photos.
• Flower Motifs: The second season OP starts with a discussion of the Cherry Blossom's hanakotoba, being "refined, noble and pure"—Takatoshi's snarking ensues.

• Funny Background Event: During the start of one of the OVAs, the girls are all dressed as brides with the obvious theme being that they're all various love interests of Tsuda. Except Kotomi is also there, which utterly confuses him. He can be heard repeatedly asking why she's there when they're blood related but Shino is talking much louder than he is and completely ignores him. In the same scene (which includes Mutsumi, Suzu, Shino and Aria), Kaede is also present, looking around in confusion too.
• Funny Conception Story: When Aria Shichijo invites her fellow Student Council members to visit her house, she points out a large tree nearby the house and explains that it's very important to her parents. The others ask if that's where her father proposed, but she explains that it's where she was conceived. In a flashback many episodes later, her parents are shown pointing out the tree to Aria as a child and explaining its significance.

• Gag Penis: A variant in that Kotomi's claims of her brother being well hung are always played for comedy. In the fourth OVA Shino even says "big mountain" in awe when Kotomi gives her a size estimate.
• Gazes: In two flavors!
  • Female: Many an occasion, the girls have been caught staring at Takatoshi's nether regions.
  • Male: Less often so from all the Gender Flip going on. But for example, there was a focus on beachgoing Shino's legs and crotch when she spills sports drink all over it, shown here◊. Mind you, it's not just any sports drink: it's translucent white.
• Genre Savvy: When Suzu gets separated from her friends during their trip to Okinawa, she waits by a display of phallic cookies because her classmates would be unable to resist reacting to it.

• Girl Not Appearing In This Series: The closest trope that describes the pink-haired girl the entirety of the end credits of the show's first season is devoted to, even though she plays no part in the series proper at all. She finally gets a cameo in the first OVA, getting a seconds-long, one-line appearance that title drops the ED song.
• Going Commando:
  • Apparently, Shino and Aria do this quite often, and they aren't discreet about it. It's strongly implied that not wearing anything underneath is now their default position.
  • Suzu has done this accidentally at least twice in the manga (on one occasion, on the day she went without her usual tights beneath her skirt, her underwear picked that day to tear).
• Gone Horribly Right: Played for Laughs. Ousai Academy's ban policy on intimate relationships has only led to the student population shown to engage in outrageously sexual topics of conversation. The main ethos of the manga is that nothing sexual outright happens... oh, but it's certainly brought up.
• Goofy Suit: The suit of Ousai Academy's mascot "Sakura-tan" has been the center of some jokes. Most notably in chapter 524, where Shino convinced Tsuda to wear it while she hid in a locker behind him for a prank. The idea was for Shino to greet Aria and Suzu when they enter the room, who would assume her distorted voice came from inside the costume, only for her to then jump out of the locker and surprise them. What Shino and Tsuda didn't account for is that Aria and Suzu would have Cuteness Proximity moment and affectionately hug "Shino" in the costume, prompting Clingy Jealous Girl Shino to jump out of the closet to make them get away from him, surprising the other two girls. Although, Tsuda is noticeably taller than the rest of the student council members, meaning that Aria and Suzu should have been able to tell the costumed person wasn't Shino from how high "her" shoulders are, which in turn would mean they got away with hugging Tsuda by pretending to be fooled. Clever girls.
• Gratuitous English:
  • Quite a lot in the first season's OP.
  • Suzu helping some foreigner find the station in episode three. It goes well until he calls her "little girl". She also uses it from time to time in the show.
  • Yokoshima's English Language lesson recital: "He can't get his ass off from Jane's bust."
  • Used a lot in the opening scene for season 2.
• Groin Attack:
  • Shino's inflatable dolphin was apparently inflated enough to deliver a sharp blow to a surprised beachgoer's crotch.
  • During a game of tennis in Chapter 188, Takatoshi takes a hit to the crotch. He collapses to the ground and can only mumble in pain at Shino and Aria's commentary.
• Hands-On Approach: In Chapter 188, Aria offers to improve Takatoshi's form in tennis by taking his arms from behind. He backs away in horror when he feels her strap-on poking him, and she expresses disappointment that her "plan" failed.
• Harem Seeker: In her first appearance, Aria asks if this is why Takatoshi picked Ousai Academy. He responds that it's because of the close proximity of the school to his house. The rest of the boys, though, play this trope straight.
• Hartman Hips: Shino is concerned because her butt print is bigger than Aria's.
• Headbutt Thermometer: Shino does this to Tsuda in chapter 57/OVA 6. Of course, this makes it look like they're making out from behind.
• He Is Not My Boyfriend: In the fifth volume of the yonkoma, Shino denies rumors about her being in a relationship with Takatoshi; rumors that were spread by Hata. Later episodes and chapters show that those rumors have never quite gone away.
• Hypocritical Humor:
  • Shino has a tendency of forgetting that she forced Taka to joined the Student Council.
  • In Chapter 325, Suzu decries the fact that she and Taka have to witness a student couple getting clingy at a bench across from them. However, as soon as Aria and Shino arrive to have lunch with them, Suzu immediately scoots tightly right next to Taka with the excuse of making space for their upperclassmen to sit.
• I Ate WHAT?!: When being shown around her college's open day by Furuya, the council is unpleasantly surprised to discover that the dish they have been served is in fact bull penis. Or at least everyone except Aria is.
• I Can Explain:
  • Implied in a chapter where the girls are stuck at Tsuda's house for a night while Tsuda's parents are gone. The next morning Tsuda wakes up to find that Shino's answered the phone... and it's his mother calling.
  • This is also a huge part of the humour of the Squid And Takatoshi corners in the Season 1 OVAs and Season 2.
• Identical Stranger: In the manga in particular, due to the use of black and white, Mutsumi and Kotomi have markedly similar designs as dark-haired, Girlish Pigtails-wearing girls (of course, they're more identifiable in their color designs), but they can be told apart by their bangs (Kotomi has a gap in hers), their pigtails (Kotomi's are at the sides of her head, while Mutsumi's are behind), and the fact that Mutsumi sometimes wears a ponytail.
• Idiot Hair:
  • Shino has one on either sides of her hair. Apparently, it's for balance.
  • Averted by Aria, who, given her personality type, surprisingly has none.
• I Know Mortal Kombat: Shino is able to apply her knowledge of Boys' Love to Judo, to devastating effect.
• I'll Be in My Bunk: In Chapter 107, Aria told Shino that she's going to the toilet since she's "feeling horny." Even Shino responded "You didn't have to say anything; just go."
• Imagine Spotting:
  • In Episode 7 of Season 1, when Suzu says she can't swim when her feet don't touch the bottom, an image of a kiddie pool appears. She then chases the rest of the cast through the sea furiously asking who imagined it.
  • This receives a callback when the Student Council are skiing and Suzu mentions not being fond of it, whereby someone imagines a little kiddie sled. Suzu then pursues the others, screaming for whoever imagined it.
• Indirect Kiss: A perverted (naturally) variant occurs when Aria offers Dejima the rest of her drink when the latter mentions that she's thirsty.
  Dejima: Thank you very much... For your straw.
• Innocent Innuendo: Mostly averted. There is nothing innocent about the innuendo, with a few exceptions:
  • A straight example does happen, when Shino gives Takatoshi an Ear Cleaning in Season 1, Episode 5.
  • Played straight with Tsuda during the Sketching contest and the three girls are quick to let him know.
  • Mutsumi is especially prone to this, with lines like, "Can I hold you down there?" (referring to holding on to the back of his shirt during a courage test) and offering him a porn mag she confiscated from her Judo Club members with the line, "Please accept this!"
  • Takatoshi has another example when he tries to tell Suzu (who is going through one of his documents on computer and making corrections) to simply tell him what he's doing wrong, rather than make corrections herself. His choice of words, however...
    Takatoshi: Hagimura. Please don't use your hands. Could you use your mouth instead?
  • Takatoshi and Mori somehow go into this territory whenever they're together. Ranging from things like Mori apparently offering Takatoshi the key to her house (it was actually a key to his house she was returning on behalf of Uomi) to them apparently sharing a racy secret (Takatoshi accidentally walked in on her changing).
• Insufferable Genius: Played with for Suzu. She takes steps to avoid being seen as this, such as pretending to not know how to solve puzzles or not knowing certain trivia.
• Intimate Lotion Application: One of the skits during a Beach Episode involves Aria asking Tsuda to put sun lotion on her back. He's very nervous about the idea of touching her, and decides to recite the pi numbers in his head to keep his mind out of the gutter while he applies the lotion... only this fails because he's not that smart and doesn't know how to recite the pi. When he somehow manages to finish the task, Aria returns the favor... by making him kneel while she rubs lotion on his back with her feet, which gets the attention of the perverted Shino.
• Ironic Echo Cut: At one point, Suzu accidentally fell on top of Takatoshi. The same stance, at the same time, in another location, is used with Shino... and a deer. Strange Minds Think Alike ensues.

• Ironic Juxtaposition: See the Groin Attack entry above. Beachgoer's reaction: Painful Wincing + Luminescent Blush + Love Bubbles.
• Irony:
  • Seitokai Yakuindomo has many characteristics in common with newspaper daily strips (slow progression, floating timeline, strip-specific gags, short arcs, status quo, etc), but it's certainly NOT the kind of work that would even remotely feature in a mass-printing newspaper.
  • Even with their outrageous topics of conversation and oversexualized trains of thought, the characters in the manga are surprisingly abiding to the Ousai School rule of no romantic relationships. Short of love topics, however, sex is what comes to their minds.
  • In spite of their henpecking of Takatoshi and propositioning of doing outrageous sexual stuff with him, most of the girls that like him happen to enjoy him best when he's at his most gentlemanly.
  • The fact that the girls behave so outrageously around Takatoshi has made him increasingly desensitized to whenever they bring up a crazy topic, and as such, he tends not to take them seriously anymore. This has made them unable to convey their more tender intentions towards him, as those go over his head.
  • Shino and Aria are among the ones who say the most outrageous stuff in the whole manga... while being the top two students in the whole school. They may be all sorts of kinky, but their academic acumen is unquestionable.
  • Even though the Student Council spends like 90% of the time dedicated to sex jokes, they are actually firmly and dutifully committed to their roles as council members. Yes, there's a lot of nonsense, but none to be found on that topic.
• Kewpie Doll Surprise: Kotomi, when she realizes that she's Late for School.
• Kimodameshi:
  • One occurs in episode 8 of season 2. Only Suzu is scared; the rest of the group actually finds the walk at night kind of relaxing.
  • In later chapters of the yonkoma, another is held. Mutsumi and Takatoshi are paired up together, and Mutsumi considers asking Takatoshi to hold her hand. She finds it too embarrassing, and resolves instead to ask if she can hold on to the back of his shirt. She unfortunately phrases her request as, "Can I hold you down there?"
• Lampshade Hanging: Usually courtesy of Takatoshi.
• Laser Sight: Hata's camera in Season 1, Episode 7 for some reason.
• Last Episode, New Character:
  • Todoroki in the first season. Also lampshaded.
  • Also Toki in the first OVA.
• Late for School: Kotomi points out that Takatoshi shouldn't run to school with a piece of bread in his mouth, since it's a girl's trope. Soon after, she's late herself and proceeds to run with a baggette in her mouth.
• Lost My Appetite: Subverted in Chapter 75, causing an O.O.C. Is Serious Business moment.
• Lovable Sex Maniac:
  • Shino wins first place. If a sexual topic is discussed, it usually comes from her mouth first, right before Takatoshi brings in the punchline. But hey, you're laughing, right?
  • Yokoshima-sensei, whose regular rape attempts are Played for Laughs.
  • On the other end of the scale, Aria's rather cheerful about bringing up sexual topics.
• Love Epiphany:
  • Subverted. Shino is irritated when she sees Tsuda and Aria pretending to be boyfriend and girlfriend, but instead of coming to the logical conclusion that she likes Tsuda, with whom she's been teased with for a good deal of the run, she instead wonders if she is in love with Aria.
  • Kaede almost has one in Chapter 324, when Takatoshi is accompanying her while paying for some (male) underwear her sister asked her to get for her. The train of thought so panics her that she loudly pretends to be Takatoshi's big sister.
• Lover Tug of War: Parodied in a Not What It Looks Like moment when Suzu is shocked after walking in to see Aria and Shino tugging on Takatoshi's arms and shouting "Mine!". They were actually fighting over which one of them Tsuda would help carry heavy stuff for first.
  • This gag is later repeated when Suzu walks in (after assuring Hata that the Student Council has no romantic drama) only to find Shino and Aria holding on to Takatoshi's arms.
• Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration: The girls frequently refer to this with Takatoshi, telling him to have tissues on hand. When Takatoshi gets asked if he has a girlfriend, Aria wonders if it's his right or left hand. Shino takes it even further in asking if he uses his mouth.
• May–December Romance: When the engagement of judo coach Daimon-sensei and music teacher Michishita-sensei is announced, he is teased by the judo club girls for managing to land a younger woman.
• Metal Detector Checkpoint: When Nene goes through one of these, she initially thinks her metal glasses sets it off, but still sets it off without. She then realizes it was her vibrator that was the cause of this.
• Misblamed: When fan subs of most of the anime adaptation's were shown on the Internet, fan scanlations only covered a small part of the first volume of the yonkoma. This led to some accusations by some Suzu/Takatoshi fans of the anime adding Shino/Takatoshi moments since the latter appeared in chapters of the yonkoma that hadn't been translated yet.
• Moment Killer:
  • Being staunchly dedicated to the (quite green) comedy instead of romance, almost every moment that starts to turn romantic doesn't just get killed, it pretty much commits suicide.
  • In an aversion, Shino manages to ask Tsuda out to a dance without any joke ruining the moment at the end of Season 1, Episode 10.
  • Takatoshi's tendency to unwittingly do this leads Uomi to label him "Flag-Crusher Takatoshi".
• Morton's Fork: Played for Laughs. One rainy day, Takatoshi says he likes rain, and Shino makes a sexual comment about him masturbating. Another rainy day, Takatoshi says he doesn't like rain, and Aria makes a similar reply. Takatoshi lampshades the fork.
• The Movie: A movie is scheduled for theatrical release on the 21st of July, 2017. Playing the trope straight, the trailer suggests that Takatoshi may transfer from Ousai to Eiryou (which would be a major change to the status quo), while at the same time showing several scenes from the manga that weren't animated before.
• Mundane Made Awesome:
  • Hata setting up a camera tripod with high-intensity zoom like a sniper rifle.
  • Suzu's Shoe Time.
• My Eyes Are Up Here: Gender Inverted. Takatoshi's the one bringing it up.

• Naked Apron: Uomi claimed in Season 2, Episode 13/Chapter 181 that she was waiting to surprise Takatoshi with this trope when he got home, but had to put on clothes because the weather was too cold.
• Naked People Trapped Outside: On chapter 443, Uomi comes to Takatoshi's house after buying some groceries and asks him to open the door for her, leaving some bags outside. Moments later Kotomi asks him to do the same, as she ran naked from the shower to get a shampoo that Uomi had left in the bags outside.
• Never Split the Party:
  • The Ousai Student Council tend to do everything together, even during their free time.
  • Played for laughs. If there's even a hint of a possibility of spending the night at Taka's house, all the girls of of the Student Council will unequivocally try to join in, and not always out of jealousy, but because it's fun. There's not even a discussion about it; it's just something that happens.
• Noodle Incident: We never learn what Tsuda wrote in his essay for the school paper, but the Tear Jerker story about an abandoned kitten used metaphorically in place of it and the fact that every girl who reads it winds up a blubbering wreck implies it generates powerful feelings, whatever it's about.
• No Periods, Period: Kicked out into the cold. Periods come up at least three times in the first season's premier episode alone. It's justified in that the school only went co-ed at the start of the show, with just shy of 95% of the student body being female, and thus the girls are more brazen. It's also used to try to Squick out The One Guy.
• Not a Date: Chapter 88/OVA 7's epilogue has Takatoshi and Shino buying stuff for the student council by themselves at the mall since Suzu and Aria are busy. The end up going out to eat, and Takatoshi escorts Shino to her station while her arm is wrapped around his.
• Not So Above It All:
  • Shino goes on what could possibly be a peeping spree at guys skinny dipping at the other side of the public onsen. Predictably, Aria jumps in... oh, there goes Suzu!
  • Mitsuba, for all her innocence, is still no exception. Season 1, Episode 13 has her interpreting Tsuda's assurance that he doesn't mind working with her while she's still sweaty and stinky from Judo practice as him having a scent fetish.
  • Tsuda himself, while a certified celibate (much to Shino's disappointment), is implied to be masochist and occasionally play along with the gag to cut it short.
    • Despite this Takatoshi is still a healthy teenage boy, and has sometimes been caught staring at girls. Even his friends aren't totally safe, as he once had to look away from Mutsumi when her clothes were drenched and stuck to her, and he realised she has a really nice body.
  • Even Kaede is hinted to have moments this when she mentioned that her fear of men started when she was eating mushrooms and noticed their shape.
• Not What It Looks Like — Given Seitokai Yakuindomo's liberal use of dirty jokes, this is a given.
  • The old "girl hovering over a guy on the floor" is used with Suzu and Takatoshi. The same stance, at the same time, in another location, is used with Shino and a deer.
  • Aria and Tsuda are alone in council room, and it really hot day. Aria starts to take of her blazer... and accidentally does it in erotic fashion. When she realises it, she loudly lampshades it, starts to cry and runs out, dropping her bow-tie. Much to Tsuda's confusion, who picks up her bow-tie... and then Shino, who saw Aria run out the council room in dishevelled clothes, walks in. And yes, Shino thinks Tsuda just tried to force himself on Aria.
  • Then there's episode four, with Suzu enjoying her milk carton and Takatoshi standing in just the wrong place...
  • Season 1, Episode 7 has Shino grabbing the sleeve of Tsuda's bathrobe, while they're walking around in a hotel. They bump into Hata. Cue Not What It Looks Like explanations.
  • Inverted during the valentine arc in the manga, Takatoshi and Uomi meet incidentally when they pick present for white day, when the Student Council trio found them. To ease the awkwardness of being found buying presents, Uomi claimed it's a date.
  • The anime-only "Squid and Takatoshi" segments are built entirely around this.
  • When Takatoshi accidentally spills hot tea over his crotch, rest of student council help to dry his pants... then Kaede walks in. What it DOES look like is as if three of them were pleasing him orally, and what they say to her doesn't exactly clear up the misunderstanding.
    Kaede: What are you doing!?
    Council: We're cleaning our communal property
    Tsuda: She's fainting.
  • On one occasion, during an argument Takatoshi and Suzu were having her skirt hook came off so he gave her his blazer to wear. Alas, when Shino sees him standing outside the nurse's room holding some of Suzu's clothes and Takatoshi replies to her inevitable question with "Hagimura and I just made up"...
  • In Chapter 235, in a glorious case of From Bad to Worse, Suzu is changing in the Student Council room because she has to go to the pool, but her skirt is picked up by a gust of wind and thrown outside. While Shino and Aria go pick it up, Takatoshi shows up (because Suzu forgot to close the door) and Suzu has to make every effort possible to make him not notice that she's bottomless. Because of the heat, Takatoshi decides to take off his shirt, but does it too closely to Suzu (enough to take a peek), so Suzu hurriedly hugs him closely so that her bottomlessness is hidden from him by the angle of sight. At that moment, Aria and Shino show up, surprised that their half-naked underclassmen are tenderly hugging...
• Ocular Gushers: Omnipresent in the anime.
• Offscreen Teleportation: Hata has on occasion managed to inexplicably be present where she shouldn't be able to.◊
• Oh, Crap!: Kotomi has this look in The Stinger for episode 8 in season 2 when Takatoshi shows her the picture she took and edited of him as a muscular guy, then sent to Shino. She then explains it was an art project, which surprisingly passed, and when he asks if anyone else has seen the picture besides her and Shino, she nervously claims no one else does. Then she released a more photoshopped version of it for her project at school, causing Takatoshi to comment that he's going to need another talk with Kotomi.
  • Kaede's reaction during the 2nd year field trip in Season 2 when she realises that with both Takatoshi and Suzu away she was stuck with Shino, Aria and Kotomi without any backup.
• Once an Episode: Every episode starts with Shino announcing a new (nonsensical) rule. This was subverted, however, in Season 1, Episode 11:
  Shino: Ousai Academy Student Council Rule #11: Whispering during class is strictly forbidden!
  Takatoshi: What?! Wait, you're being serious now?!
  • While Suzu is generally the one blowing the whistle during this sequence, along with Aria hitting a drum shortly afterwards, in season 2 who does these motions changes from time to time, although it's always Shino stating the rule.
  • Suzu, once Kotomi makes her realize that she won't be able to walk to school alone with Tsuda anymore from the moment Kotomi enters high school. Suzu has to gather her thoughts for a second before she can answer to Kotomi.
• One-Gender School: Ousai was, until the series began.
• Only One Name: Several characters only go by one name, most notably the Eiryou Student Council (Uomi, Mori and Aoba). Other examples include Nao-chan and Yoshi-kun (Ousai's most lovey-dovey couple), Furuya and Toki.
  • As of July 2017, several full names have been revealed: Chihiro Uomi, Nozomi Mori, Toori Aoba (revealed in a list in the manga) and Kaoru Toki (revealed via the credits of the movie's trailer).
• Only Sane And Straight Man:
  • Takatoshi, while having to bear with the girls' crazy mentality.
  • Suzu fills this role when he's not around. However, even she's not up to snuff on her own since chapter 63 of the yonkoma showed that she was on the verge of a breakdown when Tsuda wasn't around to deal with the barrage of perverted jokes from the others. Not to mention Suzu has her own issues with height that get her set off.
  • Shino straightens up on occasions when she's talking to Yokoshima-sensei. Especially when they're alone. Narrator outright states she's not used to the role.
  • Toki's riding on the bandwagon with these guys.
  • Episode 4 of the first OVA more or less sums up this trope with everyone in this frame being a series pervert while everyone in this frame is their straight man exasperated by all the perverted quips.
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In episode 12 of the first season, Yokoshima said she has a cold and lost her libido. After she ignored Aria's innuendo, the Student Council decided she's indeed seriously ill.
  • In chapter 401, Takatoshi notices that Mutsumi isn't her usual energetic self and goes to see if she's okay. Unfortunately, his innocent question of "Is something weighing on your mind?" causes Mutsumi to run off, sobbing she knew it was obvious she'd gained weight.
• Opening Shout-Out: The movie does this twice. When Shino is being interviewed at the beginning, the last part of her speech that the audience hears is "Are you aware of the meaning of cherry blossoms?", which the first line of the second season's opening. Then in the post-credits scene, she's seen standing under a cherry blossom tree in the exact same pose as the second season's credits.
• Overly Narrow Superlative: In Chapter 313, Suzu describes the new teacher as "tall", as if "tall" was a narrowing adjective coming from a girl as tiny as her; as the rest of the student council surmises, to Suzu, basically everyone is tall to begin with.
• Overly Long Name: There's a sketch where Mitsuba is testing out Suzu's status as a Teen Genius by asking her an art history question. It ends with Suzu reciting Picasso's full name from memory.
• Parents Walk In at the Worst Time: Suzu's mother walks in right after a Suggestive Collision between Suzu and Takatoshi. In a subversion of the usual reactions, she is extremely pleased at the prospect of her daughter getting some◊.
• Phenotype Stereotype: The blonde, English-speaking foreigner.
• Pixellation: Often, such as the "design" Shino drew on the suggestion box, the vibrators in the introductory sequence, the present Yokoshima-sensei gave to Shino and even suggestive written phrases on the whiteboard in the Student Council's office.
• Press-Ganged: Takatoshi is shanghaied onto the student council on the first day of school.
  • Toki is forced to join the judo club after Mutsumi defeats her in a match.
• Promotion to Opening Titles: Uomi and Toki are inserted into the usual opening credits in the later OVA episodes.
• Protectorate: Tsuda, for his Student Council colleagues. Shino, Aria and Suzu are not cool with other girls getting close to him, not only because of their respective feelings about him, but also because he's their friend and that's not an okay thing to do in front of them.
• Psychological Projection: Played for Laughs. Tsuda is the lightning rod for the vast majority of the girls' perversions, who tout him as a Hormone-Addled Teenager and a frequent masturbator. If anything, Tsuda is by far the least hormonal character in the whole manga, so it's more a case of the girls trying to justify their own teenage hormones on him.
• Real-Place Background: Kyoto is depicted rather faithfully.
• Red Armband of Leadership: Downplayed. In Ousai red armbands signify power, not leadership—students that enforce the rules wear them.
• Reflexive Response: In Student Council Rules Number 11, "Don't talk in class!" Tsuda immediately objects, obviously expecting something random or dirty, then stops himself and realizes that one's perfectly normal.
• Retcon / Series Continuity Error: The yonkoma originally introduced Suzu as a second-year like Shino and Aria, but the author started to portray her as Takatoshi's age from the fourth chapter, which she stays at for the rest of the series. The anime rectifies this by having her be a first-year from the start.
  • The yonkoma also originally gave Aria's name as Maria, but the author admitted he'd made a mistake and made a correction.
• Running Gag: Several, with some characters getting their own.
  • Most famously "Suzu's head" or "Suzu's about here". Due to often being too short to fit comfortably into frame, Suzu is usually seen from just the top of her head, or not even in frame at all, with a tag to reference where she is so people watching can tell. The "Suzu's head" gag is pushed up to 11 in the second season of the anime, with the tag ridiculously pimped up to really emphasize it with a variety of effects such as making it 3D or shining rainbow colors. It has even spread to other people, and has not limited itself to just their head, e.g. "Shino's Chest".
  • Shino has her mispronouncing similar sounding words (e.g. "dismissal" and "pregnant", "accident" and "aftermath").
  • Aria going commando.
  • Nene walking around with a vibrator inside.
  • Shino giving the exact same tour whenever she shows someone around the school. This gets lampshaded in the movie.

Tropes S to Z

• Santa Claus: Not only is there a Santa Claus, he apparently has the same taste in gifts as Sayaka and Shino.
• Scenery Porn: As a product of the same studio that animated Princess Lover!, some of the backgrounds look arguably lavish.
• School Festival: Season 1, Episode 9. A sports festival.
• School Newspaper News Hound: Ranko Hata. School newspaper club president, Camera Fiend and Stalker without a Crush. Takes candid pictures to sell to other students. Claims that she's in it for the yen. Goes to great lengths for a big scoop if necessary, such as packing her own miniature TV studio in episode three of season one.
• Serious Business: In episode 13 of season 2, Shino and Uomi are making dinner at Takatoshi's house. Both girls attempt to make their best dishes to avoid getting one-upped by the other one. Kotomi then mentions that the two girls look really fired up as they're cooking, either because of an immense Battle Aura, or them just simply flambeing. Takatoshi tells them to cut it out or they might burn the house down. They have another cooking duel shortly afterwards after Kotomi's stomach growls, and both girls make something for Takatoshi as well.
• The Seven Mysteries: Investigating the ones at Ousai Academy becomes the subject of one segment in OVA 5.
• Sex Comedy: The series' sense of humor about 21% school Slice of Life jokes, 10% height jokes, and 69% sex comedy. Though here, the protagonist (and only male) is the Straight Man — it's the surrounding girls who provide all of the lust and sex jokes. Surprisingly, it's not actually Ecchi despite all the sex jokes, and the fanservice is pretty limited.
• Sexy Shirt Switch: Invoked and lampshaded in Chapter 144.
• Ship Tease:
  • Takatoshi with all of the others in the student council, but especially with Shino. Chapter 80/OVA 7 has Shino and Takatoshi buying supplies, while Aria and Suzu are "conveniently" busy with something else. It later becomes an excuse for them to go out and eat, and it ends with Shino looping her arm around Takatoshi's while the latter doesn't at all seem to mind.
    • Shino inviting a depressed Tsuda to go to the folk dance together. And amazingly, no joke appears to kill the moment.
  • Outside of the student council circle, Ousai's Judo Club members are trying to fuel Mutsumi's possible infatuations with Takatoshi.
  • Suzu also gets a lot of obvious Tsundere moments with Takatoshi. (Well, obvious to everyone but him.) She even gets an unofficial kiss during CPR practice.
  • Uomi was originally introduced as a Shipper on Deck for Shino/Takatoshi but quickly decides to go after him as well. She ends up being his most active pursuer, especially when becoming in-laws gives her the opportunity to frequent his household.
  • Kaede gets a lot of these with Takatoshi, though one could simply chalk her nervousness around him up to her Does Not Like Men issues (e.g. stammering and blushing while talking to him) or simply bad luck on her part (e.g. she sits down next to him just as other people are leaving, making it look like she went out of her way to be with him). However, in Season 2, Episode 12 where Takatoshi saves her from falling down the stairs, we learn she's actually okay with Takatoshi touching her. The revelation makes Shino and Suzu very wary.
  • Invoked with the introduction of Mori, Eiryou High School's Vice President. The author gleefully invites readers to "look forward to their future friendship". Even in-universe the two get along incredibly well due to their similar personalities, something that does not go unnoticed by the other girls who're interested in Takatoshi.
  • It took her a bit longer than the others but eventually it seems that even Aria might be starting to feel something for Takatoshi beyond her usual teasing. It starts when she gets unusually bashful when he chooses her character to pair up with in a radio play over Shino or Suzu's (and lampshaded by Hata that in trying to cause the least drama he may have started more) and continues in chapter 344 when she suddenly realises with a blush that her heart is beating too hard for her to sleep in his presence.
  • The second OVA uses Longing Look to tease Suzu->Takatoshi, Takatoshi->Shino, and Kotomi->Takatoshi. Another OVA in the second season has all of his potential love interests dressing up as brides. (With Tsuda on the other hand just expressing confusion and annoyance that Kotomi is once again included.)
• Shoe Time — Suzu introduces her shoe to Takatoshi's face in slllooow moootiiiooon.
• Shout-Out
  • YokoHikasa, Satomi Sato and Sayuri Yahagi perform the opening theme of season 1 as Triple Booking, which is the name of the three girl idol group from the mangaka's previous manga. The group even appears as themselves on variety shows, showing that they exist in the same world.
  • In Season 1, Episode 2, Shino makes a remark about "a fiancée who is sword dancing outside of the party grounds", a reference to the Princess Lover! ero-game and anime. And if you look hard enough, the Princess Lover anime was produced by the same studio that animated this show...
    • Again in Season 1, Episode 2, Shino cracks a pose belonging to a certain Magnificent Bastard.
  • In Season 1, Episode 4, one of the photos taken by Ranko during the class trip in Kyoto is of Shino in front of the Jeugia music store (which also makes it a case of Actor Allusion).
  • In Season 1, Episode 5 Takatoshi says "my sister is going through puberty", which is the title of another manga by the same mangaka. Lampshaded with Exact Words.
  • In Season 1, Episode 7, Hata assembles a camera with tripod, Laser Sight, and zoom lens that resembles a sniper rifle atop of a roof, and "snipes" Takatoshi with it.
  • In the same episode, there's a subtle joke about imagining what Takatoshi's life is like in an Eroge, and then cut to what actually looks like Ken Sugisaki playing the game.
  • Again in the same episode, the logo on the condom box that Takatoshi's sister packed for him looks suspiciously similar to the original Gundam logo◊.
  • And AGAIN in that episode, we are treated to Yokoshima-sensei's POV as she swims through a patch of coral and attacks a teenage boy floating on the surface.
  • In Season 1, Episode 8, there's a short animation parodying Strawberry 100%.
  • Shutter Chance!
  • Season 1, Episode 10:
    Hata: The Student Council President's approval rating is 98%.
  • In Chapter 141, Nene shown to Suzu a light novel in the bookstore titled A Certain Zero Melancholy Girl.
  • In the opening of season 2, episode 9, the label on the bread Tsuda bought may remind viewers of K-On!.
  • Several strips are titled as "Girliness Level (X)" - 1200, 5000, 18000, and 530000; all references to the original power levels of Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta and Frieza respectively.
• Shower of Awkward: Tsuda accidentally walks in on Aria showering. True to both characters, he's far more phased by this than her, not just due to the incident itself but because of the jokes he knows will forever follow.
• Show Within a Show:
  • Really strange example. While the actual show taking over Seitokai's timeslot is the second season of Hakuouki, Season 1, Episode 13 includes a Magical Girl show called Magical Mako that both does not exist and can be seen by the entire cast, and is supposedly filling that role.
  • And then in the sports festival episode, there was a corny parody of a story about slaying a certain killer whale.
  • Another episode features a Lawyer-Friendly Cameo by the Seitokai universe's version of Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende. One of our protagonists is watching one of the infamous No Laughing games.
• Sickeningly Sweethearts: In Takatoshi and Suzu's second year (third for Aria and Shino), a pair of really lovey-dovey students sometimes show up just to get told off for violating the school's anti-dating rules.
• Sick Episode: See Catch Your Death of Cold.
• Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Most of the girls in the story express some interest in Tsuda, who is a doting and caring person by nature. Regardless of any romantic prospects, said girls, and especially his partners in the student council, enjoy both pampering him and being pampered by him. He is a very dedicated and selfless person towards them, so they always seek to at least reciprocate his kindness.
• Slasher Smile: Suzu comically does this twice and creeps out Takatoshi, enough for him to mentally apologise.
• Sleep Cute: Shino with Takatoshi in Season 1, Episode 7. It also happens again in chapter 72 of the yonkoma, first with Shino and then with Aria... who manages to fall asleep in a way that makes her face end up on Takatoshi's crotch.
• Sound-Effect Bleep:
  • Whenever it's related to monthly issues or anything else too hot for TV.
  • Or in the case of one very nasty Suzu Precision F-Strike.
  • The manga has a rare inversion of this trope in chapter 51.
• Soundtrack Dissonance:
  • Quite a few of the instrumental pieces in the soundtrack have a mellow, nostalgic tone that would not be out of place in a dramatic or bittersweet school story, which contrasts wildly with the non-serious and perverted tone of the show.
  • It's even worse when the full version is used as Fake ED in Season 1, Episode 13... itself a very cliche shoujo romance-esque about Love at First Sight.
  • Season 2's ending theme makes it seem like the show is about a coming-of-age school story centering on Shino, Aria, and Suzu's friendship.
• Squee:
  • Shino's reaction, upon seeing Kinkaku-ji, was nothing but awe.
  • Yokoshima-sensei's reaction to finding a confiscated magazine full of bishie beefcakes.
• Stealth Insult: When Suzu is out of frame save for part of her head, a caption usually points it out to emphasize how small she is. At one point in the anime, a similar caption appears over Shino's breasts.
• Stunned Silence: In Chapter 69, the student council is celebrating the New Year's at Taka's home, and everyone is stuffed after a sizeable meal. Taka states that he has to loosen his belt, and Aria does the same, but with a different kind of belt:
  (unspecified narrator) "That was our first time seeing a chastity belt. We didn't know what it was, so we didn't make any jokes about it."
• Suggestive Collision: Happened between Suzu Hagimura and Takatoshi Tsuda. The aftermath of it is one Tsundere Suzu. Mrs. Hagimura seems pleased that might've happened though. (See Parents Walk In at the Worst Time above.) Suzu also causes a variant when she suddenly runs into and hugs Takatoshi in relief,^note  Understandable, since she had to bear with being the Straight Man to everyone else's perversion alone when Takatoshi was absent for a day. which didn't help given how her head is at crotch height.
• Super-Deformed: Characters are often displayed Chibi style, especially as someone says something perverted/stupid.
• "Super Sentai" Stance: On occassion in the manga, whenever they have to stop Nao and Yoshi from getting too frisky with one another for example, the student council may do one of these led by Shino (like in the strip Adult Contest in Chapter 378).
• Take a Third Option:
  • In chapter 393, Aria asks Tsuda to handcuff her behind her back as practice for a magic trick. Once he does, she realizes that she was supposed to use stage magician props instead of handcuffs made for S&M plays. This left Tsuda with two options: fetching the key out of her chest pocket, which given her size is pretty much impossible to do without a Thanks for the Mammary moment or two, or asking someone else for help and falling straight into a Not What It Looks Like situation. Instead, Tsuda simply dangles Aria from her ankles so the key would fall to the floor.
  • In chapter 401, Mutsumi is worried because she's gained weight. Kotomi suggests a bath treatment in hot water, while Toki suggests going for walks. Mutsumi decides that the judo club will do walking exercises in the school's heated swimming pool.
• Take That!: The reaction to Nagi of Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens fame being "used goods" is given one.
• Take Up My Sword: In Chapter 63, Takatoshi falls sick and asks Suzu to "cut in on their jokes" for him.
• Teacher/Student Romance: Naruko Yokoshima, the only teacher with a significant role, is a Hard-Drinking Party Girl Old Maid and is way too excited about Ousai becoming co-ed.
• Tear Jerker: An In-Universe case in Season 1, Episode 9. The article Takatoshi writes for the student council paper brings all of the girls to tears. This baffles him to no end since there was apparently nothing in the story that resembled the imagine spots.
• Teru-Teru Bōzu:
  • Shino hangs one up to get good weather for next day's pool opening, and quickly turns it upside down when she learns that Hata will be taking swimsuit pictures of her.
  • Before the sports festival, she hangs up a whole bunch of them.
• Through His Stomach:
  • In chapter 49, when Tsuda compliments the miso soup dinner the student council girls make for him and his sister, they stare at him expectantly after mentioning which part of the soup they prepared individually. Tsuda's actual words roughly translates to "I could drink this everyday." Which in many cases sounds like a proposal for marriage. Later, Chapter 127 sees Shino offer to make the Tsudas' lunch after finding out that their parents are on another trip, and Suzu considers doing the same and even asks Takatoshi what his favorite food is.
  • Later in the yonkoma Uomi uses her newfound status as Takatoshi's in-law to go to his house and make food for him.
  • Chapter 405 has Mutsumi admit that she's gained weight because she and Takatoshi have been swapping bento side dishes.
• Title Drop:
  • Yokoshima-sensei drops the series title in the middle of the School Festival in Season 1, Episode 10. And, once again, in episode 13.
  • In the very same episode, Shino does this in the end.
  • In an earlier episode, Tsuda drops the title of ''Imouto wa Shishunki", another series by Tozen Ujiie.
• Too Hot for TV: Most of Shino and Aria's thought bubbles get this treatment.
• Too Much Information: Here's a new drinking game: take a shot anytime one of the three girls on the student council (Namely Shino and Aria) blurts out a piece of personal information they really have no business talking about in public. You'll die from alcohol poisoning by the time 30 minutes are over. And if Yokoshima or Hata are in the scene you will die even faster say perhaps within the next 5 minutes.
• Tsundere:
  • Shino, though less belligerent than most cases. It becomes more and more apparent as the story develops.
  • Aria calls Suzu one. She may be right about it, judging from how tsun-tsun Suzu was after the Suggestive Collision incident with Takatoshi.
  • Invoked by both Mitsuba and Todoroki in chapter 109, with Mitsuba being a type B and Todoroki being... perverted.
  • Invoked and deconstructed in chapter 122. "This is what happens when a guy is immune to tsundere."
    Suzu: (following Aria's script) "Tsuda! Here's your Valentine's chocolate. But don't get the wrong idea!! I only made it because I'm obligated as a member of the student council!"
    Tsuda: (dejected) "I see... Sorry to have troubled you."
    Suzu: !!
• Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Pretty music teacher Michishita-sensei's fiance judo coach Daimon-sensei is bald, gonky, and older than she is. That said, he does have a very well-toned physique, and it's implied that Michishita-sensei has a thing for muscular yet gentle men.

• Unwanted Harem: Takatoshi just wants to survive, and chose to attend the former girls' school because it's closest to his home, yet the girls are convinced he's there to get a harem. Indirectly, he's gaining relationships that can be remotely called a harem. Just look at the sports festival episode. He's always the answer to the personal questions the girls picked up in the Scavenger Hunt Event. Later, it's confirmed that Mitsuba, Suzu, and Shino have crushes on him; Yokoshima-sensei wants to rape him; Kaede may have a crush on him; and Aria and Kotomi sometimes act like The Tease around him. Chapter 122 adds Todoroki as well as she is shown to be enthusiastically giving him Valentine's Day chololates. Later, Uomi becomes his in-law and uses it as an excuse to get closer to him.
• Victoria's Secret Compartment: In episode 9 of the second season, Furuya, the former Student Council President, held information of an upcoming college fair to the Student Council in her cleavage. Deconstructed as the sheet became crumpled. Takatoshi lampshades how old fashioned the Fanservice was.
• Visible Sigh: Played for laughs. Even though Aria thought she had blocked Shino from sighing with a gag, Shino sighs through it anyway.
• Visual Innuendo: Far too many, from the strangely placed chocolate banana in the opening to a peach in the background when Aria talks about her habit of scratching her butt.
• Vulgar Humor: Runs on this.
• Wham Line: In episode 13 of season 2, Uomi flat out asks Shino if she's interested in Takatoshi after the latter decided to stay over for the night along with the former. It catches Shino off-guard, and she tries to deny it. Uomi then simply says that they wouldn't need to be in a relationship since he's essentially her slave already.
• Wondrous Ladies Room: Gender-inverted: since Ousai was formerly an all-girls school, they've only recently gotten around to making a men's restroom. When Tsuda is ordered to clean the restrooms as punishment for being late one day, the girls are excited about the prospect of seeing the inside of a men's room for the first time (Aria even inquires as to why there's no toilet paper next to the urinals). When it comes time to clean the girl's room, Tsuda expects this trope to be played straight...until he gets inside and finds that the room reeks of cosmetics.
• Yamato Nadeshiko:
  • Referenced: The theme song is called "Yamato Nadeshiko Education".
  • Shino and Aria: Yamato Nadeshikos on the outside; hardcore perverts on the inside.
• Yandere:
  • Referenced. Tsuda finds himself unable to concentrate with the girls staring at him so Aria suggests watching him from the door like yanderes instead. Which is of course a much worse distraction for the thoroughly creeped out Tsuda.
  • Nene has a homemade pair of swim goggles with yandere eyes, along with one that has ahegao eyes.
• Yaoi Fangirl: Shino, Aria and Yokoshima-sensei like to read yaoi-related books and magazines.
• You Must Be Cold:
  • Chapter 310 has Tsuda lending his school jacket to Aria who fell asleep sitting at the table of the Student Council's room. This series being what it is, in this precise moment Tsuda realized that his jacket was covering his open fly and he promptly closed it, making the actually awake Aria wonder what the zipping sound was really about.
  • Later Invoked in the same chapter. When Aria tells the rest of the Student Council about it, Suzu wonders aloud what Tsuda would do if he were to find the three of them sleeping at the same time. Cue the girls sitting side by side at the table and pretending to sleep to find it out. Tsuda Takes a Third Option and uses his extra large scarf to cover the shoulders of the three of them at the same time, which made each girl think that they were the chosen one until they opened their eyes.
