"You don't have to deal with all your worries alone anymore, Rean. You've got us, right?"

The young heiress of the Reinford Group, Erebonia's largest industrial company. Her mother, Irina Reinford, is the current chairwoman after having forced the previous chairman, Alisa's grandfather Gwyn Reinford, into resigning. As a result of this, she has a strained relationship with her mother and joins Thors Military Academy in order to find a path for herself outside of her mother's reach.

A friendly yet somewhat intense girl, she and Rean initially got off on the wrong foot due to an incident. However, the two are able to make amends with one another and eventually become close friends. Though initially quick to deny it early on, she also has a sisterly relationship with her maid Sharon. In combat, she uses an Orbal Bow. She also ends up joining the Lacrosse Club during her time at Thors.

After graduating from Thors and somewhat coming to terms with both her mother and her place as a Reinford, she ends up helping to rebuild the Reinford Group after the events of the civil war. By the time of Cold Steel III, Alisa has risen to become the General Manager of the Reinford Group's 4th Development Division.

  • Academic Athlete: A member of the Lacrosse Club and also one of the top-performing first year students in Thors.
  • A-Cup Angst: Played with; she's actually on the higher end of the Old Class VII girls' bust size spectrum (specifically, third biggest), but she still voices her jealousy of both Emma and Sara's figures.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Rean must have rubbed off on her as she starts patting Juna's little sister's head after she introduces herself.
  • Arrows on Fire: Several of her skills, including her Flamberge and Molten Rain Crafts (along with their upgraded variants), as well as all of her S-Crafts, have her launching burning arrows.
  • Auto-Revive: Her default Master Quartz Angel allows her automatically revive if she's knocked out. Twice if the Quartz has been fully maxed out.
  • Badass Bookworm: She is one of the more intelligent and tech savvy members of the Class, scoring in the top 10 of the midterms. Come Cold Steel III, she's increased her business and engineering acumen, having risen to be a general manager at her family's company while still being as capable in a fight as the rest of her classmates even fending of Sharon and Crow with her Orbal Gear EXA.
  • Benevolent Boss: She sees her maid Sharon as more of a sister than a servant. Upon becoming a general manager at the Reinford Company in Cold Steel III, she's shown to treat her employees rather well, who in turn are shown to enjoy working under her.
  • Big Fancy House: The twenty-five floor Reinford Building is her house. Well, the first twenty-three floors are used by the company but it still manages to be an enormous house.
  • Birds of a Feather: She get along quite well with Elie, as the two are noted to be very similar. She also get along well with Tita, a fellow blonde girl with a strong engineering background whose family played a strong part in their respective home country's technological advances.
  • Bottomless Quiver: She performs normal attack using a physical arrow, yet Falcom doesn't even depict her with a quiver.
  • Break Meter: Her Radical Design Brave Order (later upgraded to Brilliant Design) increases damage to the enemy break meter along with restoring some HP and EP.
  • Break-Up/Make-Up Scenario: What her Cold Steel IV bonding events with Rean are in general. Importing a save changes the dialogue somewhat, but the overall context of the first event is that Alisa feels guilty over the misdeeds her family has done, especially with how even Rean has also been affected, and comes to feel that it's inappropriate to continue their relationship as a result and asks to go back to being just friends with Rean reluctantly obliging. Come her second event however, after resolving the situation with Sharon and her mother, Rean urges Alisa to have faith that there can still be something between them with Alisa agreeing. However, it's not really until her final bonding event can the two finally decide to get together again.
  • Broken Ace: Alisa is beautiful, educated, knows how to fight, and comes from a very rich background. However, she's plagued by feelings of loneliness, inadequacy and frustration regarding her family thanks to her mother Irina, and her situation only gets worse by the end of III when Sharon betrays her, her father is revealed to be alive as Black Alberich, and her mother decides to support the Imperial Army in their unjust war against Calvard. These sequence of events also results in Alisa straining her relationship with Rean. It's not really until the end of IV that she's able to truly make peace with her problems.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a large bust, and she manages to be on the giving and receiving ends of this trope:
    • For the giving side, she admits to feeling jealous of both Emma and Sara's figures.
    • For the receiving side, if you visit Heiyue on the last day of Cold Steel III Chapter 2, Xin ends up looking at her and Emma chest first, then orders Lau to ready their best tea and snacks for their guests, in notable contrast to his attitude the previous day.
  • Child of Two Worlds: Though they are considered commoners in Erebonian society, the Reinford family are basically nobles in all but name due to their vast riches accumulated throughout the years. This puts Alisa in the unique position of having the status of a commoner at birth, but was basically raised as a noblewoman thanks to her family's wealth.
  • Cleavage Window: Her current outfit as of Cold Steel III leaves quite a bit of her sizable cleavage exposed.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: A mild example for the most part when Rean's magnetism gets Played for Laughs, but in Cold Steel I she's less than amused by Rean going out to meet with Claire at night during their Field Study in Roer right after their talk. She then proceeds to berate him for it the next morning. She's still this in Cold Steel III, though it usually only pops up around Musse.
  • Commonality Connection: She's able to bond with Rean over their shared understanding and empathy of the other's problems regarding their respective families and personal troubles growing up. They also bond over their shared desire to walk their own independent paths in life, how both aren't sure of what that path is, and how both came to Thors to find out.
  • Connected All Along: Cold Steel II reveals that she once met Rean when they were children, but both had forgotten about it until Alisa's second bonding event in Ymir reminds both of the truth. She's also this with Millium and Altina, as their creator, Black Alberich, is in fact her father Franz Reinford under the influence of the Curse of Erebonia. In a very roundabout way, this makes her the older sister to both.
  • Cool Big Sis:
    • Acts like a natural big sister figure to those younger than her. In Cold Steel I, Alisa berates Laura for her continued awkwardness towards Fie despite being her senior but acts supportive towards both and tries to help them get along. She's also quick to give Millium a hug once she starts crying due to Class VII's impending disbandment in the epilogue of II. She also behaves this way with Juna, Altina, and Tita in the later games.
    • The Drama CD The Remote Town of Alster, she's also quick to get along with Tilia and helps the latter out when she's writing her story by reading it and giving her feedback.
  • Costume Evolution: Her canon wardrobe is as follows:
    • A Class VII school uniform in the first Cold Steel game.
    • A sleeveless white and black shirt, detached black sleeves, a black and red skirt, and a brown right-hand glove in Cold Steel II
    • A mostly white (with black accents) ensemble consisting of a jacket, corset, mini-skirt, and thigh-high boots in Cold Steel III and IV, as well as Reverie.
  • Crash-Into Hello: The very first time both Rean and Alisa meet up is in front of Trista Station were Alisa bumps into Rean while the latter was admiring the scenery. They both didn't have any hard feelings, at least until Rean's Accidental Pervert moment at the old schoolhouse.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Alisa admits that she finds Altina to be quite adorable and has to hold herself back from getting too friendly. She also acts like this with Lapis in Reverie, finding the latter to be unbelievably cute together with Tita and Tio.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: Unsurprising given her status in the games, the manga adaptation of Cold Steel I ends up going with her as Rean's love interest.
  • Daddy's Girl: Going from flashbacks and the way she talks about him, it's quite clear that Alisa was close to her father when she was a little girl. Which makes it all the more tragic for her when it turns out that not only is he alive, but he's also a supporter of Osborne as Black Alberich.
  • Damage Over Time: Her Flamberge and upgraded Molten Storm Crafts have a chance to inflict Burn on the enemy.
  • Death from Above: Her Molten Rain Craft, and its upgraded version, Molten Storm, consists of a Rain of Arrows crashing down on the enemy from above. Her second S-Craft, Radiance Arc, has her leap into the air before launching a barrage of arrows at the enemy.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Subverted. She acts coldly towards Rean for much of their first month at Thors, but it's eventually revealed that she was only acting that way because she was trying to find a way to apologise for overreacting during the awkward incident between them, only not doing so sooner due to being too stubborn for her own good.
  • Developers' Desired Date: Given all the preferential treatment Alisa receives on the romantic front, both in the main story and in the Bonding Events, the biggest obstacle preventing her and Rean from being an Official Couple is the system allowing the player to choose which girl gets together with him.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father Franz passed away several years ago when she was just a young girl, an event that led to her mother throwing herself into her work and eventually the breakup of the family. In Cold Steel III, it's revealed that he's not dead at all; he's been alive all along as Black Alberich, a prominent figure who has been supporting Osborne for a very long time.
  • Dub Name Change: Her Brave Order, Radical/Golden Scheme, was renamed Radical/Brilliant Design in the English version.
  • Dude Magnet: By Cold Steel III, Alisa's beauty has grown to the point that she now has a small collection of male admirers. Rean expresses his attraction to her on multiple occasions, both Sidney and Pablo are instantly taken by how beautiful she is, and a couple of Reinford employees express displeasure at the idea of Alisa potentially having a boyfriend in Rean. This even extends to several women.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: Her red eyes go well with her primary element of Fire.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: She has golden blonde hair, which matches both her secondary element of Space in her Default Master Quartz Angel.
  • Energy Bow: In addition to using regular arrows, Alisa's bow is also capable of generating energy based arrows/imbuing regular arrows with energy as seen during some of her crafts.
  • Everyone Can See It: By the time of Cold Steel III, her feelings for Rean have become so obvious that nearly everyone who sees them and their close bond with each other are sometimes quick to assume that there's something more to their relationship. Tio even lampshades it upon seeing how they acted during their reunion, and apparently there are even rumors regarding the matter as well.
Tio: I've heard about your little group before, but you two are quite the cutesy pair, aren't you?
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Alisa also attracts the attention of other girls as well. This includes the likes of Angelica, a few students at Saint Astraia who believed Alisa might have been a noble, and her debut in Cold Steel III alone also had Juna, Jessica, Louise, and Maya all commenting on her beauty and status.
  • Expy Coexistence: Quite similar to Elie as a character, being a ranged support fighter who comes from a well off background and also serves as the Implied Love Interest of their games respective main protagonists. She also inherits some traits from Tita as well, both being blonde haired engineers in the making whose grandfathers and families are responsible for most of the technology that their respective countries use. Predictably, Alisa ends up getting along well with both Elie and Tita when they finally meet.
  • Famed In-Story: Thanks in part to her status as the heiress of the Reinford family and as a member of Class VII, Alisa has gained something of a reputation by the time of Cold Steel III as it's noted that she's even been featured in interviews with the Imperial Chronicle. Ada, one of Cedric's close associates from Thors Main Campus, is shown to idolize her and even expresses her desire to be just like Alisa one day.
  • Fanservice Pack: By the time of Cold Steel III, Alisa's bust has gotten even bigger, and her new outfit exposes some cleavage.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry : She only wears one fingerless glove on her left hand as part of her summer uniform in the first game. The other glove went to Rean as a gift according to the one-shot manga, Link of Hearts case:A.R..
  • Feather Motif: Noticeable through Alisa's hair ties which have feather like attachments. Her starting Master Quartz and Crafts are also themed after angels. Her second S-Craft Radiance Arc even gives her a pair of wings, while her third S-Craft Gabriel Arrow transforms her bow into one with a feather themed design.
  • First Girl Wins: If chosen as a love interest by the player. She's the first girl, and the first member of Class VII in general, that Rean meets in the story and only taken further when it's revealed that both of them once met as children.
  • First Kiss: With Rean in Cold Steel II, if Alisa is your chosen partner in the Finale. Followed by a second kiss in the Epilogue. Also applies to her kiss with him Cold Steel III as well as the game lacks the ability to import Rean's chosen love interest from Cold Steel II.
  • Forgotten First Meeting:
    • With Rean. She initially makes a joke about this to Rean when talking to him about how her family once took a vacation trip to Ymir when she was a little girl. As it turned out, the two of them actually did meet each other during said trip when Alisa had gotten lost while exploring the woods. Rean ended up being the one to find her and eventually led her back to town.
    • With Josette. In Cold Steel III, it's revealed that Alisa once met Josette when they were young, having played together with her for a short time while the Capua family negotiated with the Reinford for the airship that would eventually become the Bobcat. Upon remembering this, Alisa mentions this to Josette who then realizes Alisa was the little girl she played with years before.
  • The Glomp: Mild example compared to Millium, but starting from the second game onwards she'll run up to Rean in order to give him a hug. Twice of which was in front of a group of people too, some of whom lampshade the blatant intimacy of said act much to Rean and especially Alisa's embarrassment.
  • Grasp the Sun: She raises her hand towards the stars during her nighttime conversation with Rean during their Field Study in the Nord Highlands while remembering how her family fell apart.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: The shooter to Rean's slasher, or any of the guys sans Machias and Elliot.
  • Hair Flip: Her victory pose throughout the three games and her Cold Steel III S-Craft conclusion has this.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blonde hair and, despite a rough first impression, is actually very kind. Even when someone largely annoys her such as her mother, Alisa still takes the time to worry over Irina rather than be truly resentful.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Her beauty is commented on multiple times throughout the series. She even stands out among her peers, who are no slouches in the looks department. Even Rean can't help but admire Alisa's looks and give her flirty compliments about them.
  • Healing Shiv: Her Blessed Arrow and Heavenly Gift Crafts both have her fire an arrow to respectively heal and buff her allies.
  • Heroic BSoD: As with the rest of Class VII, she suffers from one after the finale of Cold Steel III. In Alisa's case, hers comes from not just Millium's death and Rean losing it as a result, but the fact that Sharon had also returned to Ouroboros and that her father, who turned out to be alive, was part of those responsible for the incident.
  • Honest Corporate Executive: What she eventually wishes to be in contrast to her mother whom she sees as running the Reinford Group the wrong way. True to her word, Alisa ends up helping to run the company after she graduates. By the time of Cold Steel III, she's now the general manager of Reinford's 4th Development Division and is quite well liked and admired by her subordinates.
  • If We Get Through This…: If romanced in IV, a conversation in the final dungeon has her talk to Rean about wanting to make their relationship official to Irina and Gwyn with Rean agreeing. Depending on the ending, Rean may or may not be able to go through with it.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: During Chapter 3 of Cold Steel I, she unrolls a coiled-up ladder by hitting it with an arrow. Subverted, however, as it only worked because Emma made it possible.
  • Implied Love Interest:
    • In-Universe, Alisa and Rean are considered very close, with their relationship being often brought up by other characters throughout the games. Some, such as Tio and the New Class VII, even wonder if they're dating after noticing how intimate their reunion was in Cold Steel III. Juna, Altina, and Ash all ask Rean about Alisa but he simply dodges the question every time.
    • Alisa's bonding events are also noticeably more romantic in nature compared to the other girls, with Rean himself even showing pro-activeness about pursuing her by the second half of the series and generally she's the only girl to receive a kiss from him until IV. During IV itself, Rean even outright confesses to Alisa about his desire to be with her well in during her second bonding event, well in advance before the final bonding event choice of the game unlike with the others.
  • In the Blood: Not only has Alisa shown herself to be quite business savvy much like her mother before her, she also shows traces of being a budding engineer herself much like her father and grandfather before her. Considering that through Franz she's part of the gnome clan, it may very well be inherent.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Alisa starts feeling this way towards Rean in Cold Steel IV thanks to recent events concerning her family which causes her to avoid pursuing her feelings for him despite still obviously loving him. She eventually reconsiders her stance thanks to Rean's encouragement, especially if she's chosen for the final bonding event.
  • Irony: In Cold Steel III she's revealed to be a descendant of the Gnomes, who are known as the Kin of the Earth, through her father. None of her abilities invoke the earth element in anyway, with her primary element in fact being fire, which matches the Gnomes ancient enemies the Hexen Clan, who are known as the Kin of Flame.
  • Light Is Good: Has golden blonde hair, bright red eyes, and dresses mostly in white from Cold Steel III onwards. Her secondary Orbal element is Space, several of her Crafts are light-themed, and she has an angelic motif in her Master Quartz and S-Crafts (Radiant Ark gives her wings while the name of her S-Craft in III is taken from an angel). Overlaps with Playing with Fire and The Power of the Sun when acting as Valimar's support.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Though she would likely deny it, Alisa takes after her mother quite a bit as she inherits Irina's natural skill in business and management, quickly rising to being the head of RF's 4th Division within nearly a year, and as seen in Cold Steel II when Irina punches the daylights out of Angelica's uncle, it's clear that Alisa got her fiery spirit from her mother as well.
  • Limit Break: Her S-Craft in Cold Steel I is Rosetta Arrow, which is later upgraded to Judgement Arrow after she has a talk with her mother near the end of Chapter 6. Cold Steel II later adds in Radiance Arc. For Cold Steel III and IV, as well as Reverie, her S-Craft is Gabriel Arrow*. Rosetta Arrow makes a reappearance in the latter two games, as an upgrade to her Flamberge Craft.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Being a Reinford, Alisa had very few people she could call friends while growing up. Her family's unique status of being extremely wealthy despite their commoner origins meant that she was basically isolated from both commoners and the nobility. It's part of the reason why she was adamant about hiding her name during her time at Thors, as she believed her relationship with her schoolmates would become awkward if they ever found out about her true lineage.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: She comes from one of the wealthiest families in Erebonia with the mannerisms expected of a Blue Blood despite not being one herself technically, and she fittingly enough has waist length blonde hair.
  • Luminescent Blush: Quite prone to getting this, often during times where she's embarrassed or flustered.
  • Mage Marksman: She uses an Orbal Bow as her weapon, but her biggest assets are her CP-recovering crafts and her ARCUS line, which gears her more towards support arts. Her Flamberge Craft and all of her S-Crafts do magical damage instead of physical damage.
  • Magical Girl: She's this in the in-universe anime series "Mahou Shoujo Magical Alisa" of Tokyo Xanadu. Her "Unspeakable" DLC costume also has her wear said magical girl outfit. She also receives an updated version of the latter in Cold Steel IV once more through DLC.
  • Meaningful Appearance: Partly ties her hair into two short sidetails in place with an elaborate hairclip and ribbon ensemble. By the time of Cold Steel III, she only ties the left side of her hair now perhaps as a way to signify her growth since the last game.
  • Meet Cute: The first time Rean and Alisa meet is at the entrance of Trista's train station. While distracted by the scenery, she bumps into Rean (who himself was also admiring the scenery) and falls down before Rean quickly helps her back up. If chosen as a romance partner in Cold Steel II, she even lampshades it by calling it "the most picture perfect way" to meet Rean.
  • Mini-Mecha: In Cold Steel III she eventually obtains the "Orbal Gear EXA," a 3rd generation Orbal Gear built through cooperation between the Reinford Group, ZCF, and Epstein Foundation. This allows her to take on both an amnesiac Crow as Azure Siegfried and Sharon during the battle at the Spiral of Erebos. In Cold Steel IV, she can use it as a summon attack similar to Rean summoning Valimar during the same game.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Second only to Sara in this regard come Cold Steel III. Her good looks are mentioned more than once such as with Juna outright describing her as being incredibly beautiful during a conversation with Rean in Chapter 2. Rean even admits that because of this he felt a little excited being hugged by Alisa when they reunited. If Alisa is taken along the Heimdallr Tour event in Chapter 4, he also admits that her beauty is enough to distract him from enjoying the scenery.
  • Multishot: Her first S-Craft, Rosetta Arrow, has her summon a magic circle on her bow to launch a hail of arrows at her enemy. Her second S-Craft, Radiance Arc, starts with her notching four arrows at once on her bow before launching them all at the same time.
  • Nice Girl: In spite of what some of her earlier behavior might imply, Alisa is a sweet and kindhearted girl at her core. Even when people like her mother or Ferris annoy her with their behavior, she never truly holds it against them. With Ferris, she even becomes Alisa's closest friend outside of Class VII.
  • Of Corsets Sexy: She wears a mostly black corset with a zipper and white accents at the front as part of her costume from ''Cold Steel III' onwards.
  • Ojou: Though commoner by birth, Alisa is the heiress to the Reinford Group, the largest heavy industrial company on Zemuria, with Sharon and a couple of employees even referring to her with formal terms such as "milady" or "Lady Alisa". Thanks to her upbringing, she's even noted to have the natural bearing of a noble by Gwyn and a couple of Saint Astraia students who even mistook her for one.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Alisa goes into this after crashing boobs-first into Rean during their fall into the Old Schoolhouse ruins during the prologue of Cold Steel I, culminating with a slap and half a chapter's worth of Passive-Aggressive Kombat afterwards. Thankfully, she does realize that she was in the wrong, and apologizes to him in Chapter 1.
  • Playing with Fire: As seen with her crafts, her primary element is Fire.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Her second S-Craft in Cold Steel II, Radiance Ark, gives her wings that allows her to float in the air as she launches her attack at her opponent.
  • Pre-Climax Climax: Heavily implied in her final event in Cold Steel IV.
  • Rain of Arrows: Her Craft, Molten Rain, and its upgrade, Molten Storm, have her launch a single arrow into the arrow, which then turns into numerous arrows falling down on the enemy.
  • Required Party Member: She must be in the active party for the battle against Shirley, Rutger, Siegfried and Sharon in Cold Steel III and for the battle against Alberich and Rufus in Cold Steel IV.
  • Retractable Weapon: In Cold Steel III, she has a retractable bow she only uses in her S-Craft.
  • The Rich Have White Stuff: She's from one of the wealthiest families in Erebonia and her outfit from Cold Steel III onwards is predominantly white in color. Her Orbal Gear EXA is also predominantly white in color.
  • The Runaway: She ran away from home for several reasons, including her awkward social status and deteriorating relationship with her mother, and ended up enrolling in Thors to make her own path on her own merits.
  • Samaritan Relationship Starter: A certain incident during class orientation aside, this is how Alisa's crush on Rean starts out. It wasn't merely a result of him protecting her specifically, but rather how Rean went out of his way to do so for a complete stranger that resulted in Alisa becoming interested in him.
  • Secretly Wealthy: At first, she only identifies herself as "Alisa R" to her classmates, preferring not to be associated with the Reinford family, which is known to be one of the single richest families on continent. She's even richer than her actual noble classmates and schoolmates at Thors, which is part of the reason why Alisa was so hesitant to reveal her identity at first until Sharon reveals it.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Before shooting a giant arrow in her S-Craft Radiance Arc, she first shoots 4 arrows which turn into flaming birds.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Out of all of the girls in the original Class VII, only Fie and Millium are shorter than her, and she was one of the top scorers on the midterms, and one of the most tech-savvy members of the class. She then went on to work for her family's company after graduating, where she showed great aptitude in business management and technology.
  • Sideboob: In Cold Steel IV she shows off a prominent one in one DLC outfit that the artist VOFAN drew up for her.
  • Sins of the Father: She's shown to feel some shame at the bloodshed caused by the weapons made by her family's company ever since her mother took over, citing the Railway Guns stationed in Crossbell as one example. When her father is revealed to be Black Alberich in Cold Steel IV, she also feels deeply ashamed of the crimes he's committed, to the point of trying to break off any possible relationship with Rean in her Bond Events for everything he specifically has had to suffer from Black Alberich's machinations.
  • Status Buff: Her Heavenly Gift Craft grants three turns of regenerating CP and the Insight status to any of her allies in its area of effect. Cold Steel III onwards also adds some Gradual Regeneration to it, and allows Alisa herself to gain the buffs as well.
  • The Straight and Arrow Path: In spite of coming from a family renowned for the development of some of the most advanced weapons in Erebonia, Alisa's weapon of choice is an Orbal Bow.
  • Stripperific: One of her DLC outfits in Cold Steel IV barely covers anything on her body. It does come with a nice hat though.
  • Sucking-In Lines: She does this in her S-Crafts, Rosetta Arrow/Judgment Arrow in Cold Steel I and Gabriel Arrow in Cold Steel III.
  • Suggestive Collision: After she and Rean fall down the trap door during orientation, she ends up landing on top of him with her chest in his face.
  • Support Party Member: Several of her Crafts are focused on CP recovery, and she's one of the only reliable methods of this in the game. Heavenly Gift also bestows Insight status in an area. Her secondary element of Space also gives her access to some of the best support arts in the game.
  • Technological Pacifist: To an extent with her family's weapons manufacturing. While Alisa admits she's never really felt ashamed of that side of the Reinford's business, she's also not that pleased when her mother Irina began upping the ante by signing off on the creation of the Railway Guns and increased military weapons development throughout the years afterward. During Cold Steel III, she makes a point to state that she wants to ensure her family's weapons are ever only used to protect people.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Want to distract Alisa from whatever is bothering her (even if it's you)? Offer her some apricot jam.
  • Trick Arrow: Thanks to orbal technology, her arrows are much more flexible than left as it is. She can shoot flaming arrows, heal, restore CP or make other party members hard to hit (insight).
  • Tritagonist: Of the Cold Steel series in general. She was originally the "Deuteragonist" as Alisa received the most focus and character development in I after Rean himself. Crow eventually took over the role, but she remains a prominent figure thanks to her family's heavy involvement throughout the events of the story.
  • Tsundere: Downplayed; despite what the incident between her and Rean would suggest, Alisa is shown to be a friendly and affectionate person once she and Rean are able to patch things up with one another. She only really plays this trope straight when dealing with either Sharon or her mother. By the time she's reached adulthood, the "tsun" almost completely disappears.
  • Uptown Girl: Her relationship with Rean, who she is the Implied Love Interest to, plays with this trope. While both are Child of Two Worlds, Rean is a nobleman by adoption while she is a commoner, though her family is far wealthier than Rean's own.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Ends up asking this to both Sharon, who is going back to Ouroboros, and her father, after he said that he never loved the Reinford family.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Daughter variation. For all the problems Alisa has with her mother, it's clear that she still loves Irina and also wishes to gain her approval.
  • Wrench Wench:
    • Downplayed at the start of the series. While Alisa had the business side of her family's work down pat, her engineering knowledge was mostly average and only gave her enough of an understanding to examine a broken down truck to figure out what was wrong. She slowly starts to get better at this by Cold Steel II however, having learned enough to perform basic maintenance on Rean's orbal bike for him and even fix her father's unique pocket watch with guidance.
    • This is taken further in Cold Steel III where it's revealed she, Tio, and Tita all collaborated to create the Orbal Gear EXA in secret, with Alisa being skilled enough to maintain it herself and even create maintenance manuals for others that make the task easier to do. In her bonding events in IV, she admits to Rean that she actually made a point to learn more about engineering so she could better understand the technology the Reinford Group creates and sells.

"I'll make my music resound throughout Erebonia. No! Throughout all of Zemuria."

Son of Olaf Craig, a Lieutenant General in the Imperial Army and commander of the 4th Armored Division. Unlike his more masculine and militaristic father, Elliot prefers to live the life of a musician much like his sister and late mother. However, at his father's insistence, he ends up joining Thors Military Academy. Though initially reluctant at the idea, he ends up enjoying his stay there after meeting all his friends in Class VII. He also ends up joining the Wind Orchestra during his time at Thors. In combat, he uses an Orbal Staff.

After graduating from Thors and with blessings from his father, Elliot ends up living his dream of becoming a musician as he enrolls at a music academy in Heimdallr. By the time of Cold Steel III he has graduated and has become a travelling musician.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He might be one of the nicest guys at Class VII but when it comes to rehearsing for the concert, he can be the scary type.
  • Big "WHAT?!": He has this reaction when Class VII is given command of the Courageous.
  • Character Development: He eventually grows more capable and confident in himself over the course of the first game, though he still admits in his dance event scene that he still has a ways to go. Come the second game, and Elliot has made good on that statement and it's because of this that his dad finally decides to let him attend the Music Academy he always wanted to go to.
  • Costume Evolution: His canon wardrobe is as follows:
    • A Class VII school uniform in the first Cold Steel game.
    • A yellow jacket with a brown hood, a blue-ish green shirt, and blue pants in Cold Steel II
    • A yellow vest, white undershirt, and blue-ish green pants in Cold Steel III and IV, as well as Reverie.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: His regular attacks and Crafts all perform magic damage, which means he's hamstrung when facing enemies who are resistant to or outright immune to magic and Arts.
  • Disc-One Nuke: In the first Cold Steel game, players can have an infinite source of mira just by having him cook the first recipe players get in the game and sell the item that gives out more money compared to buying the ingredients for it.
  • Enemy Scan: His Detector α Craft allows him to scan enemies for info, which also comes with the ability to reduce attack power and magic power by 50% aside from unbalancing the target.
  • Fanboy: Of Misty and Vita. Who, unbeknownst to him, are the same person until the finale of the first game.
  • "Gender-Normative Parent" Plot: His friction with his dad over his less-than-manly hobbies is a big part of his character arc in the first game.
  • Gradual Regeneration: Echoes/Resonance Beat grants this to all allies in range, along with a DEF boost. At 200 CP, his second S-Craft Remedy Oratorium also gets this effect as an added bonus, at 50% per turn.
  • Jock Dad, Nerd Son: Well, Military Dad, Artistic Son but the dynamic is the same. General Craig the Red was rather unimpressed with his son's desire to pursue a career in music and forcibly enrolled him at Thors. By the beginning of Cold Steel II after they reunite, he changes his mind.
  • Limit Break: His S-Craft in the first game is Seventh Rhapsody, with Cold Steel II adding in Remedy Oratorio. For Cold Steel III and IV, as well as Reverie, his S-Craft is Remedy Fantasia.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: In the time between Cold Steel II and Cold Steel III, he grows his hair out long enough to tie it into a ponytail.
  • Magic Music: All of his Crafts except Detector have a musical theme to them. His S-Craft even involves transforming his Orbal Staff into a violin and playing it for massive damage. In the sequel he's able to summon a pipe organ for emergency healing and resurrection for Cold Steel II and play healing song via his orbal violin in Cold Steel III.
  • Magic Staff: He uses an Orbal Staff as his weapon.
  • Master of None: Like Emma, he is the only character to have ranks in all four attack types but each individual rank is extremely low. He'll never encounter an enemy he can't Break but at the same time, his odds aren't as good as dedicated fighters. The fact that he does magical damage makes up for it to an extent since he can easily hurt enemies that strongly resist physical damage.
  • The Medic: The most geared towards healing of Class VII, with his second S-Craft having the unusual distinction of being a healing move in the second game. He also gains a healing S-Craft in the third game to emphasize his medic role.
  • Military Brat: His father is one of the top generals in the Imperial Army. New Class VII, remark that he doesn't give off the son of a military officer.
  • Morph Weapon: His version of the Orbal Staff can transform into violin.
  • Nice Guy: The nicest guy in Class VII as far as anyone can tell.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: By Cold Steel III, he's learned how to dodge his father's over the top hugs.
  • Required Party Member: He must be in the active party for the battle against Rufus, Lechter, Claire and Millium in Cold Steel III.
  • Serious Business: The performance at the Academy Festival. Elliot is normally the sweetest kid around but when it comes to doing music right, he can be positively scary.
  • Ship Tease: Starts getting it with Mint in Cold Steel III and IV. They even spend the final night at Michelam together.
  • Shout-Out: The Music Club's performance in Chapter 5 of the first Cold Steel game is a huge one to "Cagesong of the Ocean," right down to the circumstances that see Elliot participating and the song itself.
  • Skyward Scream: Screams in anguish in the normal ending of Cold Steel IV when Rean, Crow, and Millium take off for the atmosphere to kill themselves.
  • Support Party Member: His Craft selection veers sharply towards support, with an analyzing skill, a healing/recovering skill and a DEF-boosting/HP Regen skill. His only attack skill for much of the game does low damage though he get a better one towards the end of the game and his first S-Craft is fairly powerful. His S-Craft from Cold Steel III onwards is also geared for support.
  • Unreliable Narrator: He paints his dad as a cold, harsh dream crusher who has a lot of friction with Elliot, so Class VII was pretty surprised when he turned out to be an affectionate and doting father who honestly wants the best for his son.

"But regardless of one's background or social standing, one should always be able to live with pride in him or herself. Thus, if you truly did make light of yourself and your own abilities, that is an act of shame for which you owe yourself recompense."

The daughter and only child of Victor S. Arseid, Viscount of Legram and warrior known as the Radiant Blademaster. A diligent student of the sword who seeks to perfect her craft, she ends up joining Thors as a way to improve her skills. Unlike most Nobles, she doesn't pay much regard to class differences and treats everyone she meets with equal deference. As heir to the Arseid family, she is a practitioner of the Arseid school of swordsmanship and in combat uses a great sword much like her father. During her time at Thors, she ends up joining the Swimming Club.

After graduating and the seeing the extent of which her strength is lacking in comparison to her enemies, Laura returns to Legram with her father in order to resume her training under him. By the time of Cold Steel III, she has become a master of the Arseid style, travelling across Erebonia to both train herself and acts a sword instructor in various training halls within the empire.

  • Action Girl: Her and Fie are easily the most action-oriented females of the old Class VII and stand as the strongest first years of Thors. Of significant mention is that she has canonically surpassed her father by the end of Cold Steel IV, and is one of a small number of people who can legitimately take on Rean using Spirit Unification - Rean himself doesn't believe he can overcome her, and they're shown to be about as strong as each other when overcoming foes on-foot.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Laura is very pretty and very strong. During the swimming competition in Cold Steel II's epilogue, choosing her as Rean's opponent will have him gazing at and approving of her toned body and nice, powerful legs. This doesn't actually translate to her model, making it something of an Informed Attribute.
  • Animal Motifs: Lions, both as a student at Thors generally and personally, as reflected in her second S-Craft.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Can get two with Rean in Cold Steel IV. The first during her first bonding event, where she pushes him against a cave wall and kisses him to break him out of his fatalistic thoughts and the second time during her final bond event.
  • The Big Guy: Easily the strongest member of her class from a purely physical standpoint. She will always have the highest potential physical damage output in the game if available, is built to break through the enemy line with ease, and can take as much as she can give.
  • Badass Longcoat: She starts wearing a white longcoat similar to her father's in the third game. She most certainly has gotten stronger, having achieved mastery of the Arseid style.
  • Badass Teacher: When Rean and the New Class VII first meet her in Parm, she's taken to teach some swordsmanship to former students of the now abandoned Vander training hall. By Reverie, she's also stated that she has started acting as an instructor for the army as her father had during the Project Tyrfing daydream.
  • Birds of a Feather: This is the basis for her and Rean's relationship (along with a dash of Worthy Opponent), should he pursue it. They are both calm, good-hearted nobles that are extremely talented practitioners of swordsmanship with strong leadership qualities. They even grew up in similar situations, being raised in remote regions of the Empire by fathers who didn't care to engage in the politics of the region. Laura's relationship fortune even says that she's very compatible with people who share her interests.
  • Bear Hug: Upon meeting Rean for the first time in years in Cold Steel III, she immediately pulls him into a hug, much to the surprise of him and his students. She simply laughs off their surprise before Rean returns it.
  • BFS: She wields a greatsword, it deals Strike-type damage in addition to Slash and is capable of stunning most enemies on the field even when they're facing the player, regardless of level.
  • Blue Blood: The Arseids are one of the preeminent military families of the Empire, on par with the famed Vanders.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Her hair, sword, family crest, and a good chunk of her wardrobe from Cold Steel II onwards are blue, and she is a heroic swordswoman who places great value in honor and chivalry.
  • Boots of Toughness: She's one of the toughest and most tomboyish members of Class VII and has worn boots in all of her outfits.
  • Caps Lock: For her bonding event in Cold Steel III, she sends Rean an all-caps message by mistake, thanks to her being Hopeless with Tech.
  • Classy Cravat: She is the daughter of a viscount and a strong Lady of War who wears a yellow cavarat in her outfit from Cold Steel III onwards.
  • Combat Stilettos: All of her boots have prominent heels and they do not impede her in combat.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Her hair, sword, family crest, and a majority of her wardrobe outside her school uniform from Cold Steel II onwards are primarily blue in color.
  • Contralto of Strength: The strongest of the original Class VII girls, with the deepest voice to match.
  • Costume Evolution: Her canon wardrobe is as follows:
    • A Class VII school uniform in the first Cold Steel game.
    • A white, yellow, and blue shirt with a green collar, a blue skirt, and knee-high boots in Cold Steel II
    • A blue and white longcoat, a blue shirt, and green undershirt, blue shorts, and a yellow cravat, with the black hair ribbon that originally held up her ponytail replaced by a blue hair bracelet from Cold Steel III to Reverie.
  • Criss-Cross Attack: Her third S-Craft, Radiant Phoenix Blade, has her rapidly slash the enemy apart from multiple angles before ending with a mighty slash.
  • Crutch Character: By virtue of being the first character with an S-Craft during Cold Steel, she serve as this for the duration of the field study in Celdic.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: Her Radiant Spin and its upgraded variants, as well as her S-Craft from Cold Steel III onwards, all have a high chance to inflict Faint on the enemy.
  • Death from Above: Her first offensive Craft, Armor Breaker, and it's upgraded variant Lion Rush from Cold Steel III onwards, has her leap into the air before striking the enemy with a downward sword slash. The finale of her second S-Craft, Radiant Lion, also has her slashing from above.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Has blue hair, and her primary Orbal element is Water.
  • Elemental Motifs: She is affiliated with water (her primary orbal element) thanks to her blue hair, cool but passionate personality, growing up near the lakeside town of Legram, and fondness for swimming.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: As seen with her trio of fangirls from Legram. The students at Saint Astraia also fangirl over her when she appears at the school together with Class VII and wondered if she was transferring. Even Juna felt in awe of her beauty and strength after seeing her in action for the first time in Cold Steel III.
  • Evil Knockoff: In The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie, she has a robotic copy fought during Chapter 4 of Rean's route. It can also appear as a Hollow copy in the True Reverie Corridor.
  • Fangirl: As noted in one of her Character Notes from Cold Steel I, she's quite taken with Mishy.
  • Fanservice Pack: Her regular outfit doesn't reveal much, but it's clear that her breasts have grown a bit between Cold Steel II and Cold Steel III, best shown in her swimsuit outfit.
  • Fantastic Fighting Style: Her family has taught students how to fight (with more than just swords) since the time of Dreichels the Lionheart. As such, the Arseid style is one of the most famous within the Empire. It and the Vander school of swordsmanship are indisputably the most respected styles in Erebonia. As a student of the sword Laura is very interested in Rean's Eight Leaves One Blade style. In fact, she's able to recognize that Rean uses it before he actually even tells anyone else.
  • First Kiss: Has hers with Rean in Cold Steel IV during a bonding event.
  • Force and Finesse: The force to Fie's finesse when they team up with each other, being a Mighty Glacier who fights with a BFS compared to the much more agile young Jaeger. Plays this role to the other female members of the original Class VII bar Millium as well. As a potential Battle Couple with Rean, this trope is also in play, as Rean fights like a typical iajutsu-style samurai and focuses primarily on speed and skill whereas Laura uses overwhelming might and practiced, deadly swings.
  • Forceful Kiss: Plants a big one at Rean by pinning him to a wall as a way to snap him out of his suicidal tendencies.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: To Rean to get him out of his suicidal thoughts in Cold Steel IV but instead of slapping him, she picks him up with one hand, pushes him to the wall, and plants a kiss at him.
  • Heir to the Dojo: Western swordsmanship example. Her father is the master of the Arseid school of Swordsmanship, with her family owning a training hall in her hometown in Legram. She is expected to inherit both, and as a result has received training from her father since childhood, hence her great combat prowess as one of the strongest members of the class.
  • Heroic BSoD: In the third game, she falls to her knees in despair when she sees the Courageous explode in the sky with her father onboard.
  • Heroic Lineage: Comes from the distinguished Arseid family, a lineage of warriors dating back all the way to the War of the Lions wherein Laura's ancestor at the time fought alongside Lianne Sandlot herself and was in fact the second-in-command of the Eisenritter.
  • Honor Before Reason: Laura is a very straightforward person, which causes some friction in her interactions with her classmates, particularly Fie. She eventually gets over it.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Laura is awful with technology, with one of her Bonding Events in Cold Steel II showing her breaking an orbal washing machine merely by pressing a few buttons, though this is attributed to her global inexperience and simple lifestyle. This appears to have toned down by Reverie where she managed to learn how to use a Panzer Soldat without much issue.
  • Instant Fan Club: There are two things every female in Legram seems to agree on: One, boys suck. Two, Laura is awesome. She also has one of these at St. Astraia, which she doesn't even attend. Juna also ends up quickly becoming a fan herself soon after meeting her.
  • Lady of War: She is the graceful daughter of a proud noble family who is very good with a sword.
  • Limit Break: Her S-Craft in the first game is Radiant Dance, which is later upgraded into Radiant Waltz after facing off against Laura's butler in Chapter 5. Cold Steel II throws in Radiant Lion as well. From Cold Steel III to The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie, her S-Craft is Radiant Phoenix Slash, her father's S-Craft since their first appearance.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: The Arseids were descendants of the second-in-command of the Eisenritter, as a result, she has a strong appreciation for the knightly values of honor, chivalry and fairness.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: A powerful swordswoman with high strength, but her EP Pool and Arts stats are rather low. She even states as much at the start of the first game where she remarks on having little experience in the use of Orbments when examining her ARCUS before starting the first dungeon.
  • Making a Splash: Her primary Orbal Element is Water, though as a Magically Inept Fighter it doesn't show much in her crafts. It does tie in to her growing up by the lakeside town of Legram and her proficiency at swimming. It also ties into her various S-Crafts - even the ones that are clearly meant to evoke fiery imagery, like Radiant Phoenix Blade, which she inherits from her father, are depicted to resemble gushing, graceful waves more than violent flames.
  • Malaproper: Sometimes says things that sound a little weird, particularly when she tries to use slang. Her general manner of speaking also stands out for being extremely formal and somewhat old-fashioned.
  • Master Swordsman: Was already one of the stronger students in the Class from the start, by the end of Cold Steel II she began to train in her family's most advanced techniques and has officialy achieved mastery by the time Rean meets her again at the start of Cold Steel III, where she was also deemed qualified to help teach students of the Vander school as well. She went on to prove she earned her credentials by assisting Emma and Gaius against McBurn and Arianrhod at the Graal of Erebos and later beating her Brainwashed and Crazy father, who despite missing an arm and having damaged respiratory problems from a previous battle against McBurn is still a formidable example of trope himself, in a Single-Stroke Battle.
  • Mighty Glacier: Has the highest Strength of the party and her orbment set-up and favored elements naturally lend her to having a sky-high HP attribute and solid defenses, but is one of the slowest members and needs a lot of work to use magic reliably beyond buffing herself and others.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother passed away from illness when she was young.
  • Mysterious Middle Initial: Until Cold Steel III, the "S" in her name remained a mystery. Turns out it that it actually does stands for Sandlot as many fans suspected. However, it's mostly a decorative name as the Arseid took on the name out of respect for Lianne Sandlot. It's also something Lianne asks of Laura to continue the tradition in her dying breath.
  • Nice Girl: Stiff and formal as she is, Laura is nevertheless a very kind and polite person from the get-go, and treats everyone around her with equal deference. Fie describes her as someone who would never dream of looking down on anyone and Machias notes her for being one of two nobles who have enabled him to look past his biases, the other, of course, being Rean.
  • No Guy Wants an Amazon: She is slightly concerned about this, believing that her singular focus on the sword may have made her less desirable socially. In Cold Steel I, she attempts to practice cooking and gets Rean to try some of her dishes. In Cold Steel II, she is dismayed to discover she has a habit of destroying household appliances. You can prove her concerns unwarranted if players choose her as Rean's girlfriend.
  • Odd Friendship: With Fie. The two are near opposites in terms of personalities and backgrounds as Laura is a serious, hard working and proud member of an Erebonian noble family that puts great emphasis on the knightly values of honor and chivalry, while Fie is a Brilliant, but Lazy former member of one of Zemuria's most prominent Jaeger Corps, Zephyr that was raised on lessons of pragmatism and contracts. While they did have some conflicts at first, overtime the two became some of the most close-knit friends out of all of Class VII and a dangerous duo in battle.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Part of the swimming club during her time at Thors, and is shown to be very passionate about it. Even during Cold Steel II, which takes place in cold December, she can't keep herself from stopping by at a nearby pond to swim to clear her head.
  • Playing with Fire: Her secondary element is fire, which is also the same as her default Master Quartz from the first two games, mainly to tie into her new S-Craft, Radiant Phoenix Blade.
  • Pose of Supplication: Ends up falling on her knees after seeing the Courageous explode in the sky with her father still on it.
  • Required Party Member: She must be in the active party for the battle against Arianrhod and Demon McBurn in Cold Steel III. And again during the fight against McBurn and her Brainwashed and Crazy father in Orchis Tower of Cold Steel IV.
  • Shared Signature Move: By Cold Steel III, she gains the same Radiant Phoenix Blade S-Craft as her father to symbolize her mastery of the Arseid style.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: She's a bit clueless about how the real world works at times but she doesn't let it get in the way of her life. Her father being a quintessential Reasonable Authority Figure helps since her lack of traditional Noble prejudices makes it easier for her to adapt to Thors.
  • Shockwave Stomp: Her Azure Cleaver Craft (and its upgraded variants) have her slamming her sword to the ground with a brutal slash that gauges the earth to strike the enemy at a distance. It also has a chance to reduce the enemy's speed and movement stats.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: Engages one with her father in Cold Steel IV to free him from the Curse and break his mask.
  • Smash Sisters: With Fie once the two sort out their issues with each other. The two frequently fight in pair or in the same team, with their fighting styles complimenting each others' strengths and covering their weaknesses. This even extends to non-combat related activities such as the two completely trouncing the boys during a swimming competition.
  • Spin Attack: Brilliant/Radiant Spin has her spin in place with enough force to suck the enemies before swinging her BFS in a wide arc to slash them all apart. It also has a high chance to inflict faint.
  • Spirited Competitor: Laura is always eager at the chance to improve her skills through rigorous training or fighting strong opponents. She admits to feel excited at the opportunity to cross blades with the stronger members and assistants of the ILF and Noble Alliance such as General Le Guin despite admitting she'd likely lose and it would cause trouble for Class VII's goals.
  • Status Buff: Her Radiant Wings Craft buffs her STR, grants her some Gradual Regeneration and gives her the Brandish buff. Her Brave Order, Valiant Hearts (later upgraded to Avalon Hearts), increases the damage the party inflicts for a few turns, along with granting them all one turn of Insight.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She is the tallest female in Class VII, being around the same height as Rean who currently tops out at 178cm as of Cold Steel III according to Word of God. This only helps to contribute to her looks as described by Juna who calls Laura amazingly beautiful after meeting her.
  • Sword Plant: Not a part of Death from Above actually, she does this in her Craft Radiant Blade where a giant energy sword will stab enemies from the ground.
  • Tell Me How You Fight: If Rean's unavailable to explain how a person fights, she usually will explain it to her classmates. In fact, she figures out Rean's style before Rean even tells anyone.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Laura is mostly concerned with her swordsmanship and doesn't spend much time on typical feminine pursuits. She is somewhat perturbed about this, though, and attempts to take up cooking in the first game. She is also fond of stuffed animals, Mishy in particular although played with in that she wanted a Dogi strap at first before Rean convinces her in a bonding event.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: One of the more tomboyish members of the class, and has worn her hair in a ponytail throughout all of her appearances.
  • Walking Techbane: She can handle a Tactical Orbment just fine, but as one of her bonding events in the second game shows she's hopeless with more domestic applications of Orbal science and even manages to set several on fire while trying to operate them. And in Cold Steel III while sending an orbal text mail to Rean for her bonding event, it apparently took her an hour just to write the mail, and the message is in all-caps because she couldn't work out how to type lower-case letters.
  • Worthy Opponent: She finds one in Rean and really wants to duel him. Though they have dueled a few times off-screen, Rean is insistent in their final scene, if Laura is not chosen as the Love Interest, that he's not gonna win their duel next time. Although whether that accounts him using his Super Mode or not is unknown, though it's not out of the realm of possibility given Fie and Sara are capable of overcoming Rean at full power, too.

Appearances: Cold Steel | Cold Steel II | Northern War | Cold Steel III | Cold Steel IV | Reverie

"I'll help Class VII however I can, as a protector of justice."

Vice-President of Class VII. He is the only son of Carl Regnitz, the governor of Heimdallr and leading champion of Osborne's reformist movement. Where Nobles are concerned, he has a chip on his shoulder bigger than his shotgun and he's determined to prove himself better than all of them. After enrolling at Thors he quickly ends up forming a heated rivalry with Jusis Albarea. Though it takes time, both are eventually able to settle their differences to a degree and become more amiable with each other. During his time at Thors he also ends up joining the Chess Club.

After graduating, Machias decides to enter a political academy. By the time of Cold Steel III, he has graduated and has become an investigator of the Erebonian Empire's Government Accountability Inspectorate.

  • Aesop Collateral Damage: In Cold Steel I, his and Jusis' vitriol reaches a head during the second Field Study resulting in their Combat Link breaking while fighting a monster. They then go at each other's throats over it, not noticing that the monster was Not Quite Dead resulting in Rean pushing them out of the way and getting slashed. They're both clearly contrite over it, and become less acerbic towards each other, and in Machias' case causes him to drop his earlier vitriol towards Rean lying about his social class.
  • Aggressive Categorism: He's a Commoner and really doesn't like Nobles. He gets along with Jusis about as well as you would expect.
  • Always Someone Better: Makes no bones about his annoyance at being bettered on the entrance exam by Emma (and ONLY her). He vows he will beat her and everyone else on the midterms and dutifully studies at every opportunity. They wind up tying for first place.
  • Angry Collar Grab: During Chapter 2 of Cold Steel I, his and Jusis' issues come to a head when their Combat Link breaks while fighting a monster. The two then proceed to blame the other for it, and grab the other by the collar, and would have come to blows had said monster not proved itself to be Not Quite Dead and tried to deliver a sneak attack on them.
  • Badass Bookworm: One of the most academically gifted students at Thors (the only person who can ever best him is Emma) and he can frequently be found in the library on his days off. He's also one of the best characters in the game combat-wise. After graduating, he becomes part of the Government Accountability Inspectorate, and proves to still be capable in a fight.
  • BFG: He pulls one out for his S-Craft Ultimate Shot, Second S-Craft Trinity Cannon, and final regular craft Shotgun Blast.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Dudley in Reverie, to whom Machias is something of an Expy of.
  • Black-and-White Morality: At the beginning, he was firm in the belief that all Aristocrats Are Evil and that Osborne and his Reformists, which included his father, were good for trying to end the class system. His time in Class VII helped him outgrow this mindset via seeing actually heroic noblemen amongst his schoolmates, and seeing how shady and unscrupulous Osborne and his followers actually could be.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Admits as much when he decides to take his glasses off in order to disguise himself during a segment in Cold Steel II as he and the rest of Class VII were wanted fugitives of the Noble Alliance at the time.
  • Blue Is Heroic: The jacket he wears in Cold Steel II and his Inspectorate uniform are both blue, and for his initial faults, is a firmly heroic character with a strong sense of justice.
  • Broken Pedestal: He initially saw Osborne as a hero for his Reformist faction's rhetoric of overturning the class system which resulted in his beloved cousin's death. He loses this view over the course of the story, as his adventures with the rest of the Class gave him a better look of how ruthless and underhanded Osborne's methods are, and how many people have been, and will continue to be, hurt by his policies.
  • Butt-Monkey: He's the subject of most of Fie's trolling and any time a Noble wants to blame someone for anything or take their frustrations out, he's usually first in line because of who his father is. In Cold Steel II, he also ends up getting kidnapped by Bleublanc who then goes on to impersonate him and leave Machias himself tied up inside the storage room aboard the Courageous. Machias was not amused.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: In Cold Steel IV, he calls out his father on why he's detaining both Towa and the empress at the former Duke Cayenne's home in Ordis.
  • Character Development: In the beginning of Cold Steel I, he outright cannot stand nobles, but steady interaction with Class VII makes him realize that not all nobles are as stuck-up as he believed them to be and that all of them have their Hidden Depths to some degree. By the Cold Steel II, he's a far more level-headed and mature person who's generally more tolerable of the upper class and his relationship with Jusis is now something of a heated but more friendly rivalry.
    • His character is fully developed in Cold Steel III, as he no longer has any petty grievances against the nobility. He goes out of his way to ensure they get a fair shake, even if it means opposing his own father (someone who is largely responsible for weakening the power and influence of the nobility as a member of the Reformist faction). In Cold Steel IV during a bonding event, he can even make peace with his late cousin's fiance, who kick-started his hatred of nobles in the first place.
  • Chess Motifs: Actualized in Trinity Cannon, when he summons enormous chess pieces to aid him in attacking the enemy.
  • Class Representative: The Vice-Representative of Class VII.
  • Costume Evolution: His canon wardrobe is as follows:
    • A Class VII school uniform in the first Cold Steel game.
    • A blue jacket with a red arm-band and dark pants in Cold Steel II
    • A blue variant of the Inspector uniform jacket with dark blue pants in Cold Steel III and IV, as well as Reverie.
  • Covert Pervert: He expresses sincere jealousy towards Rean when it's discovered he went out on a late night date with Claire during their Field Study in Roer, and later he's shown to be quite pleased when he sees Claire in casual clothes too. In general, of all the male members of Old Class VII, he's most likely to comment on Rean's Chick Magnet status after Crow, usually with a hint of envy.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: His hair and eyes are both green.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: When he was growing up, he had a cousin who he thought of as a Cool Big Sis. She was being courted by a Noble up until said noble's relatives decided to fix him up with an Arranged Marriage, and they decided to remove the threat to the match by harassing her until she was Driven to Suicide.
  • Damage Reduction: His default Master Quartz Keeper, decreases the amount of damage it wields the lower their HP is.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: His primary element is Earth, best shown in his Petrifying Shell Craft.
  • Fanboy: Of Misty and Vita. He's shocked that he never considered the possibility of them being the same person.
  • Expy Coexistence: He's basically a younger and more temperamental Dudley. It goes even further in Cold Steel III, where Machias has started using Orbal pistols in his S-Craft in addition to his shotgun and even works a similar job of being an investigator for a government based organization. For bonus points, said S-Craft's name begins with Justice, just like both of Dudley's S-Crafts. Fittingly, the two are shown to get along rather well when they meet in Reverie.
  • Extra Turn: His Burst Drive Craft allows whichever party members were in the area of effect to immediately move the next turns. From Cold Steel II onwards, it also restores some of their EP as well.
  • Firing In The Air Alot: Fires his shotgun upwards to the sky when using his Energy Shell or Burst Drive Crafts.
  • Firing One-Handed: Some of his crafts have him fire his shotgun with just his right hand.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: After his cousin Elsa's suicide, he was angry and needed to lash out at something. It started with her fiancee Arthur and his family, but snowballed into hatred towards the entire class system. While the others in Class VII sympathize with his past and why he hates the nobility, Machias himself admits his behavior was unjustified. He was convinced that Aristocrats Are Evil and stereotyped good people as pompous snobs without even trying to know them.
  • Gun Kata: His S-Craft from Cold Steel III, Justice Bullet, starts with him do this to his enemies.
  • The Gunslinger: Fights mostly from a distance with firearms, starting with a shotgun as his main weapon, before adding a BFS, and his final S-Craft has him beinging in handguns and smgs.
  • Handshake Substitute: By Reverie, his and Jusis' vitriol has died down to the point their victory link quote has them performing a fist bump while back-to-back.
  • Hates Rich People: He seems to have deep hatred for the Erebonian noble class, but despite knowing that there are two other classmates who are nobles as well, one of them being Adopted into Royalty, he takes all of his resentment out on his classmate Jusis Alberea the most.
  • I Hate Past Me: If you get his dorm event in Cold Steel II, he considers his attitude when he first arrived at Thors "embarrassing," saying that even Millium was more dignified than he was. He describes it as a time of his life he'd rather forget and worse, he feels that on the inside he still hasn't changed. He's hoping to try his best to change in the future.
  • Healing Shiv: His Energy Shell Craft in the first two game has him fire a bullet that restores a portion of HP and EP of anyone in it's radius.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Machias can be quite hot-headed and critical of others, especially nobles, but is also kind to those he feels have earned it. He softens up in later games.
  • Let Me at Him!: During the orientation, the group runs into Jusis, who is quick to chastise Machias for his earlier outburts and reveal his status as Governor Regnitz's son. If the player doesn't choose to call out Jusis for his attitude, Machias will attempt to charge Jusis, only to be held back by Rean.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: If you choose him as cooking partner and the result is a peculiar dish, he will namedrop this trope.
  • Limit Break: His S-Craft in the first game is Ultimate Shot, with Cold Steel II adding in Trinity Cannon. For Cold Steel III and IV, as well as Reverie, his S-Craft is Justice Bullet.
  • Missing Mom: He mentions in Cold Steel I that his mother died while he was still young.
  • Multi-Ranged Master: Starts out with a shotgun, and later gets a BFG for his later Crafts and S-Crafts. For his Justice Bullet S-Craft in Cold Steel III onwards, he also dual-wields a pair of pistols and submachine guns.
  • Must Have Caffeine: In his first bonding event, he found his love of coffee from his father. He's not a fan of tea since it reminds him of nobles. It's further shown by the fact that coffee is one of the recipes he is expert at, and when on the run at the start of the war, his base of operations has a small percolator and a bean grinder. It even extends to Randy Orlando's name for him being "Macchiato."
  • Neat Freak: Has a shade of this when helping to decorate cafeteria for School Festival.
Machias: Damn, it somehow moved three rege out of place while we were talking. I need it to be perfectly parallel with those tables over there.
  • Nerds Love Tough Schoolwork: There's a bonding event in Cold Steel II in which he invites Rean for a few hours of studying, noting that there's been no chance since they all had to leave the academy and they need to make sure to keep up. This is his way of relaxing on his day off.
  • Not So Above It All: His normally stoic demeanor flies completely out the window when he's around Vita and he tries (and fails miserably) not to act like the starstruck fanboy he secretly is.
  • Only Sane Man: Machias will often comment on remarkable things everyone else doesn't worry about.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: During his Justice Bullet S-Craft from Cold Steel III onwards.
    Machias: You've failed your inspection.
  • Pyramid Power: Machias' Trinity Cannon S-Craft creates a pyramid using chess pieces that encloses the enemies before delivering massive damage.
  • Required Party Member: He must be in the active party for the battle against Rufus, Lechter, Claire and Millium in Cold Steel III.
  • Secretly Wealthy: His father is the governor of Heimdallr and a champion of the reformist faction. Machias tries to hide this at first, not wanting to seem like he's taking advantage of his father's position. He makes it maybe half an hour before Jusis calls him out.
Jusis: Pretty rarefied air for a simple commoner, don't you think?
  • Ship Tease: Get a good deal with his childhood friend Patiry in Cold Steel III and Cold Steel IV.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: His primary weapon is a shotgun. It can fire slugs (in some Crafts) and buckshot and gives him a natural area of effect for his normal attack. Petrification Shell is especially nasty, having a huge area of effect and coming with a high chance of causing Petrify.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: He and Jusis have been at each other's throats since day one. Even after both undergo Character Development, they can't resist ribbing at each other.
  • Smart People Play Chess: He is one of the academically smartest members of the class and was part of the chess club during the first two games.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Subverted. He can be stoic from time to time, but he's also one of the first to show a wide range of emotions.
  • Taken for Granite: His Petrification Shell Craft lanches a shotgun shell with a large area of effect and has a high chance to petrify the enemy.
  • Team Dad: He tries to be one for his classmates, particularly Fie, chastising her for falling asleep and not paying attention in class. The others tend to ignore him, however.
  • Time Master: His Burst Drive craft allows other allies in the affected area to take a turn after him.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He really likes coffee to a very serious degree. Several of his Bond Events have him trying a cup, and his Daydream in Reverie consists of him and Dudley investigating a smuggling ring that made him no longer get his favorite dark roast from a local cafe in Crossbell he came to favor.
  • Tsundere: Very much so, especially when it comes to Jusis. Fie even lampshades it in Cold Steel III she describes him as being "tsun-tsun".
  • Vitriolic Best Buds:
    • While Machias and Jusis genuinely hate each other at first, overtime the two of them grow to consider each other a close friend, even if they won't admit it and still snipe at each other at every opportunity.
    • Machias is the most frequent victim of Fie's trolling and often gets on her case due her consistently nonchalant approach to school life, but they nevertheless get along quite well, and Fie regards him as an older brother just like the other male members of Original Class VII (save for Rean).
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: In Cold Steel IV Machias manages to break Arthur (the former fiance to Machias's cousin) out of the curse by invoking this trope. Notable because he manages to do so without relying on magic or physically fighting him order to do so.

"I may not always show much in the way of class spirit...But I'm confident Class VII is the finest Erebonia has to offer."

Class VII's president. The most academically gifted student of her generation, a commoner who aced the national exams in order to win a spot at the prestigious academy. During her time as a student, she ends up joining the Literature Club. In combat, she utilizes a uniquely shaped Orbal Staff.

Unbeknownst to all, Emma is secretly a witch sent by her clan to keep an eye on events relating to the Old Schoolhouse at Thors. After Valimar's awakening and the subsequent events following it, she reveals her secret to the rest of her classmates and proceeds to help guide Rean throughout the story with her abilities. The black cat known as Celine is her familiar.

After graduating from Thors, she and Celine end up going on a journey to learn more about the Divine Knights and to find Vita Clotilde. In Cold Steel III she returns to help Rean and her classmates once more.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: While the other characters suffer from Flanderization in the Falcom Academy spinoff (since it is a gag manga), Emma goes in another direction entirely, becoming a complete Yaoi Fangirl despite explicitly not being into the genre within the main games.
  • All Witches Have Cats: Fittingly for a member of a witch clan, her familiar Celine takes the form of a cat.
  • Anti-Debuff: Her Serene Blessing skill gains the ability to cure her allies' status effects and debuffs from Cold Steel II onwards.
  • Apologetic Attacker: While not as extreme as normal examples, she does apologize when doing counterattacks and second follow-up link attack to kill weak enemies.
  • Art Evolution: It's a small, subtle change, but throughout the series, Emma's hair color changes from a dull magenta color to a much brighter pink color. Her Orbal Staff also underwent a visual change, as its initially purple parts are swapped out with yellow/gold color scheme instead by Cold Steel II.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed; Emma was already part of the main cast right from the start of the first Cold Steel game, but she was notably Out of Focus. In Cold Steel II, however, her backstory and the nature of her abilities are formally delved into, revealing that her role in the story is bigger than it initially appeared to be.
  • Attack Reflector:
    • Her Crescent Shell Craft from the first two games grants arts reflection, with the addition of upping defense. Her primary element being mirage also allows her to learn the Crescent Mirror art from Cold Steel III onwards, which has the same effect.
    • Palace of Eregion, her new S-Craft from Cold Steel III onwards, can cast a perfect reflect on the entire party, twice if cast at 200 CP.
    • Her healing craft, Serene Blessing, adds one turn of magic reflect when upgraded to Crescent Breath in Reverie.
  • Badass Bookworm: Scored highest of all the students in her year, was a member of the literature club, and is a powerful witch who come Cold Steel III is capable of, with help, playing a vital role in fending off the Society's strongest members such as McBurn and Arianrhod.
  • Badass Boast: Gives one to McBurn during the climax of Cold Steel III:
  • Badass Longcoat: Wears a light purple coat with long tresses from Cold Steel III by which time she advanced with her magic to be quite the formidible threat.
  • Bad Liar: Though she tries, she's not great at concealing the fact that there's more to her and Celine than meets the eye throughout Cold Steel I. On a lighter note, the scene before a Bonding Event has her trying to convince Rean that she's proofreading one of Dorothee's novels that has absolutely nothing to do with salacious imagery. It all falls apart should Rean decide to help her.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: One of the costumes that she shares with Rean in a New Game Plus in Cold Steel IV is her fully naked but covering up her private parts while she has glowing marks all over plus her eyes are glowing yellow. It's because she's diving in Rean's subconscious, trying to hold off the curse at bay.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her Craft Crescent Shell grants party units in its range arts reflection, with addition of upping defense. From Cold Steel III onwards, she can cast an all-party perfect reflection via her new S-Craft Palace of Eregion.
  • Beautiful All Along: She's already noted to be pretty attractive herself, what with her having a figure that would make several girls jealous, but after unbraiding her hair and removing her glasses, even the guys of Class VII are stunned into silence. Crow uses this to his advantage to make her appearance in the concert all the more memorable.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: She is stated to be a decent singer, resulting in her being made the lead singer for Class VII's concert for the School Festival, which they end up winning at first place.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's one of the nicest characters in Class VII who acts as the Team Mom, but can be quite intimidating when pushed, even being able to intimidate her grandmother Roselia, who was the one who taught her magic and is in fact the Holy Beast of Fire.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Finally gets one during her final bond event in Cold Steel IV.
  • Big Sister Mentor: She acts like the Team Mom in general, but mostly towards Fie, being one of the first to reach out to the younger girl and looking out for her by assisting her with her schoolwork. Near the end of Cold Steel II, she's shown hugging Fie to her chest when the class is all in tears as they realize their time together is at an end.
  • Big Sister Worship: Had this towards Vita when they were younger, and in the present still hopes that she'll come back home to Eryn.
  • Boob-Based Gag: Downplayed, but her breasts are still frequently used for comedic effect, including Rean getting distracted by them during a study session, Fie asking Emma if they make it hard for her to climb ladders, and Millium speculating that she might one day she might grow "boobies so big, I can use 'em as a shelf like Emma's!".
  • But Now I Must Go: Discussed and defied. After coming clean to her classmates about her status as a witch and what she knew about the Divine Knights in Cold Steel II, she states her intention to part ways with them, believing her classmates would want nothing more to do with her for keeping them Locked Out of the Loop for so long. Rean quickly puts a stop to it by assuring her that none of them hold her secrecy against her, and still accept her as part of Class VII, which moves her to tears out of happiness.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has the largest chest of all the original Class VII girls after Sara, which is frequently commented on:
    • Rean ends up taking notice of her chest during his first Bond Event with her in Cold Steel I before mentally berating himself.
    • In Chapter 4 of the first Cold Steel game, Alisa is surprised at Emma's swimming ability, but remarks that "it's not her swimming ability (she's) envious of," confusing Rean until he suddenly gets it.
    • In Cold Steel III, if you visit Heiyue on the last day of Chapter 2, Xin ends up looking at her and Alisa chest first, then orders Lau to ready their best tea and snacks for their guests, in notable contrast to his attitude the previous day.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Though she's an active member of Class VII, she has a case of this in Cold Steel I. Despite having knowledge of things surrounding the Old Schoolhouse, she fails to come forward about it and keeps Rean and the others in the dark until the finale. And even then, it's not until II where she decides to come clean both about herself and everything she knows.
  • Class Representative: She serves as Class VII's president.
  • Cleavage Window: Her outfit in Cold Steel II has a gap that reveals some of her sizable cleavage.
  • Combat Pragmatist: During Act 3 of Rean's route in Reverie, the party runs into a Simulacrum Arios guarding the device hiding the Courageous. Emma's solution was to immediately teleport the party behind the fake Arios to launch a surprise attack. It didn't work, but props for trying.
  • Costume Evolution: Her canon wardrobe is as follows:
    • A Class VII school uniform in the first Cold Steel game.
    • A black and purple shirt and a white skirt in Cold Steel II
    • A white and purple shirt, a green-ishs kirt, black tights, and a brown-ish hat in Cold Steel III. She ditches the hat (alongside her previously trademark glasses) in Cold Steel IV and Reverie, but her outfit is otherwise the same.
  • Covert Pervert: Heavily implied, considering her assisting Dorothee writing her works, to say nothing of her final Bond Event in Cold Steel IV where she and Rean meet in an Out-of-Clothes Experience where she presses his face to her chest in a warm embrace.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Her regular attacks and Crafts all do magic damage, which means she'll have trouble should enemies who are resistant to or are outright immune to magic show up.
  • Cute Bookworm: Somewhat on the shy side, and was a member of the literature club at Thors while also being the highest scoring student of her year.
  • Cute Witch: Hints are dropped throughout the first Cold Steel game, and the second game confirms that she is a witch of the Hexen Clan.
  • D-Cup Distress: While distress might be a bit strong, she tends to get flustered and embarrassed whenever her sizeable assets are mentioned.
  • Death from Above: Both her S-Crafts during the first two Cold Steel games qualify. Lord Albireon has her summon five towers as they rain down a blast of energy down on the enemy whereas Zodiac Rain could be summed up as doing the same except from space.
  • Death Glare: Gives a chilling one, complete with Supernatural Gold Eyes towards Gilbert for attacking her hometown in Cold Steel IV.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Her face shows hints of this in her dormitory event after she mentions that the reason she was able to continue being Class VII's president was specifically because of Rean accepting her for who she was.
  • Dub Name Change: A minor one; her upgraded Brave Order, Luminarion Force, is called Luminary Force in the English verison.
  • Empty Bedroom Grieving: Non-fatal example. In Cold Steel IV, it's revealed that she kept Vita's room clean and neat in the hopes that she would one day come back home to Eryn.
  • Enemy Scan: Her Detector β Craft allows her scan enemy info and comes with the ability to reduce defense and magic defense by 50%.
  • Energy Absorption: Her Brave Order, Zodiac Force, and it's upgraded version, Luminary Force ,makes it so that any magic attack inflicted on the party will be absorbed to restore their HP instead.
  • Evolving Weapon: Although it's not obvious at first glance, her staff changes as she grows in magic power in each game, from changing colors from the first to the second game to getting more designs etched to come the third game. This all culminates in the end of the third game where she uses Roselia's staff, but she's back to using her own staff again in Cold Steel IV.
  • Fanservice Pack: Zigzagged; on the one hand, her outfit from Cold Steel III onwards exposes the least amount of skin out of all her default costumes. On the other hand, her bust at this point in time is even bigger than before.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: A subtle example: she is the only character in the first Cold Steel game who doesn't have a single recipe where she is likely to make a "peculiar dish".
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: She and Vita are near total opposites in terms of personalities and are on opposite sides for the first few Cold Steel games. The two of them also have opposite secondary elements, with Emma having fire, while Vita's is water, which also happen to be the same as the respective Awakeners, Rean and Crow, who they assist, and have a decent amount of Ship Tease with.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: The Japanese script has Emma speak politely and formally most of the time, which highlights how mild-mannered she is. The only times where she doesn't use this form of speech is when talking with Celine, Vita, or Roselia.
  • Glass Cannon: She has the highest ATS stat of the class, allowing her to deal very high magic damage but rather low health and defenses.
  • The Glasses Come Off: With the world in crisis and her friends in grave danger in Cold Steel IV, Emma finally decides to take off her glasses for good.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: In the first three games in the series, any time Emma removes her glasses she usually causes people to react with stunned silence and/or remarks about how attractive she is. She ditches them for good in the fourth game.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Her hair and a majority of her wardrobe outside of her school uniform are purple, and while she is not of the upper class like Alisa and Laura, she is still a well-mannered and feminine Nice Girl who acts as the Team Mom.
  • Happily Adopted: As revealed in Cold Steel III, she's not actually related to her grandmother by blood. She was taken in after both her parents died when she was a child. Makes sense since her grandmother's actually a Holy Beast in the first place.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Several characters have been known to comment on her looks thanks to her generous figure and when taking off her glasses for the concert in Cold Steel I, even her classmates are left speechless.
  • Healing Hands: She's capable of using her magic to heal people without the use of her orbment or Quartz, as shown when she healed Rean's shoulder after he was slashed by a monster that was about to hit Machias and Jusis.
  • Healing Herb: Her grandmother taught her all sorts of things about herbs, including how to make medicines from them. It comes in handy when Rean takes a nasty wound during their Field Study in Bareahard. Or so she claims anyway, it's clear that she used magic to heal it.
  • Hot Witch: She is the best caster in the class who is revealed to be a witch, and she has a very generous figure that is frequently commented on.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: Emma can exercise a limited form of mind control so long as she can maintain eye contact. It requires her to remove her glasses and she is reluctant to use it unless absolutely necessary.
Emma: We're just common travelers and we aren't on that list of yours. Which means we can pass, right?
Provincial Army Soldier: ...Hmph. Why're you still standing there? Go along inside. Just don't go causing any trouble unless you want to find yourselves arrested.
  • Informed Ability: She's stated to have clairvoyant abilities, but outside of a bonding event with Rean in the first game where she tries to read his fortune with tarot cards, she has never shown any of them.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: It's made abundantly clear that she felt very guilty about keeping the rest of her classmates Locked Out of the Loop in regards to the truth of her identity as a witch and the supernatural aspects of their adventures in the first game. When she finally tells them in Cold Steel II, she states her intention of parting ways with them, fully expecting her classmates to be mad and reject her for her secrecy. When Rean instead forgives her for it and makes it clear he still sees her as part of Class VII (with the other members in full agreement), she's left shedding Tears of Joy.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: She snuck a homeless cat into her dorm room against the rules so she could care for it. It's later revealed that said cat actually does belong to her since Celine is her familiar.
  • Lady of Black Magic: She has the highest Arts stat of Class VII and fights exclusively with her magic and Orbal Arts, something she proves to be very capable of come Cold Steel III where she was capable of holding off McBurn and Arianrhod with Laura and Gaius' assistance. She is also very graceful in both her appearance and mannerisms.
  • Lap Pillow: Gives Rean one during her bonding event at Bareahard in Cold Steel II.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: Her concert costume in Cold Steel I has her hair loose. Sharon styled it for her. And again during the Epilogue of ''Cold Steel IV's True Ending during Olivert and Schera's wedding.
  • Light 'em Up: Her primary element is Mirage, and her offensive crafts and S-Crafts all emit bright white light.
  • Limit Break: Her S-Craft in the Cold Steel I is Lord Alberion, with Cold Steel II adding in Zodiac Rain after she confronts Vita during the final Shrine Trial. For Cold Steel III and IV, as well as Reverie, her S-Craft is Palace of Eregion.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She reluctantly attempted to keep her classmates in the dark in regards to the supernatural aspects of their adventures in the first game. To her frustration, she finds that her grandmother had not given her the full information in regards to the Divine Knights and their trials, which she had given to Vita and Celine.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: She acts as the Team Mom to the Class and her hair is shown to reach pass her waist even when braided.
  • Magic Staff: She uses an Orbal Staff, though of a different type than Elliot. She later uses the one Roselia threw at her in Cold Steel III although she uses her old staff again in IV after giving the staff back to Rose.
  • Magical Incantation: She has powers similar to those granted by Orbments without actually needing one, which she says might as well be called 'magic' for convenience. Her powers seem to require a magical word to function.
  • Magic Is Mental: She performs the best academically out of all the members of Class VII, has the best ATS and Orbment line, making her the best caster of them all, and is revealed to be an actual witch.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Downplayed; She is able to use her magic to quell McBurn's flames to some extent, limiting the damage he is able to inflict.
  • Marshmallow Hell:
    • She hugs Fie to her chest near the end of Cold Steel II while they and the rest of the class were crying about how soon they would have to go their separate ways.
    • She tightly hugs Rean into her bosom during their Out-of-Clothes Experience during her final Bonding Event in Cold Steel IV.
  • Master of None: Like Elliot, she is the only character to have ranks in all four attack types but each individual rank is extremely low. She'll never encounter an enemy she can't Break but at the same time, her odds aren't as good as dedicated fighters. The fact that she does magical damage makes up for it to an extent.
  • Motherly Side Plait: She wears her hair in a long side braid, fitting for her status as the Team Mom.
  • Muggle–Mage Romance: With Rean if she's chosen as a romance option. Granted the muggle part is somewhat muddied considering the relationship can start while Rean still has his powers as a Sacrifice and an Awakener of a Divine Knight.
  • Nice Girl: She's the kindest of the Old Class VII girls, always looking out for others.
  • No-Sell: Her Brave Order, Zodiac Force/Luminary Force, gives all party members a barrier that not only makes them immune to elemental magic, it also heals them for a set number of turns.
  • Non-Standard Skill Learning: She gets her second S-Craft Zodiac Rain on when advancing the story.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: She has bright blue eyes and is revealed to be a witch with magical abilities.
  • Of Corsets Sexy: Her outfit in Cold Steel II includes a black corset over her dress that features a Cleavage Window.
  • Oh, Crap!: Her reaction to hearing Vita's voice over the radio during the finale of the first game.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted; a member of the Crossbell Police Department's First Division is also named Emma.
  • Out-of-Clothes Experience: She has one with Rean during her last Bonding Event of Cold Steel IV when they speak in his mindscape as she affirms her feelings towards him. She acts somewhat embarassed when he brings it up.
  • Out of Focus: Out of all the starting members of Class VII, Emma has the least amount of focus during Cold Steel I, due to her actively trying to hide who she is throughout the game. It isn't until Cold Steel II that her backstory is finally revealed and afterwards starts to take a more active role for the rest of the story.
  • Parental Abandonment: As mentioned in Reverie, Emma's father passed away shortly after she was born, while her mother Isola died when Emma was around 10.
  • Playing with Fire: Her Secondary Element is Fire, best shown in her Astral Flare craft. Fitting as the Hexen Clan are known as the Kin of Flame and that she was personally raised and trained in magic by the Holy Beast of Fire herself. Her proficiency is shown by her being able to suppress McBurn's flames, if to a certain degree.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: Implied, as she's never stated or shown to have any problems with her sight after taking off her glasses in contrast to Machias who is explicitly Blind Without 'Em.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Her hair and wardrobe outside of her school uniform are purple, and by the end of Cold Steel III, she has improved enough in her magic that she was capable of fending off McBurn and Arianrhod, the Society's two strongest members with assistance from Gaius and Laura making her one of the strongest members of the original Class VII.
  • Raised by Grandparents: She was raised by her grandmother, the village elder Roselia who is revealed to be the Holy Beast of Fire after the death of her parents.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: She has a rather generous figure, and is the most buxom of Class VII's female students, but she isn't very eager to show it off. She's shown to get flustered whenever attention is drawn to her sizable assets, and is very embarrassed at the revealing outfit Crow had her and the other girls wear for the School Festival concert. Which makes her nonchalance at her Out-of-Clothes Experience with Rean during their Bond Events during Cold Steel IV more surprising.
  • Required Party Member: In Cold Steel I, she's automatically included in your party during the final dungeon of the game. Happens again in Cold Steel II where she's required to be in the party in order to investigate the Spirit Shrines. This is because she and Celine need to be there to explain what it is that you're seeing. She must also be in the active party for the battle against Arianrhod and Demon McBurn in Cold Steel III and the battle against Demon God McBurn in Cold Steel IV.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: She and Vita are near opposites in terms of personality and roles. Emma is shown to be a Reluctant Fanservice Girl who is somewhat reserved, and finds herself frequently out of the loop despite her being a member of the Hexen Clan. Vita, meanwhile, is a very confident Anguis who is comfortable with her looks (to the point of being The Tease at some points) and is very knowledgeable about what goes on behind the scenes in regards to the origins of the Hexen Clan and other parts of the supernatural. Fittingly, the two have opposite secondary Orbal elements, with Emma having Fire while Vita has Water, which also happen to be the same secondary elements of the corresponding Awakeners they're rather close too.
  • Single-Use Shield: Her Crescent Shell and later Crescent Breath Crafts can grant her allies Arts Reflect for one hit. Her Palace of Eregion S-Craft can give Absolute Reflect for the entire party for one hit, two if cast at 200 CP.
  • The Smart Girl: She earned a scholarship to Thors as a result of being the top scorer on a national exam. She's easily the smartest member of Class VII academically (and the top scorer in the entire school on the Midterm Exam) and it's all by virtue of hard work.
  • Sorry That I'm Dying: When fainting in battle, states I'm sorry...everyone....
  • Squishy Wizard: She has the highest magic stats and EP Pool out of all the members of Class VII, but only average HP, STR and DEF.
  • Status Infliction Attack: Her Ethereal Edge Craft can lower the enemies' ATS stat, while her Aster Flare Craft has a high chance to inflict Burn and Confuse.
  • Storm of Blades: Ethereal Edge fires a number of magical sword-shaped projectiles at the enemy.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Anytime she casts powerful magic or wants to intimidate/mind control someone, her eyes turn gold.
  • Sword and Sorcerer: If chosen as Rean's love interest, she fights from afar with her magic and orbal arts in tandem with the latter's swordsmanship.
  • Tarot Troubles: She can be seen reading cards during an optional scene if the player saw another optional event scene with Emma earlier in the day. Rean asks for and gets a reading from her, though she admits she's not very good at it. She notes to herself but not to Rean that she's uneasy about the card she drew for him. Wheel of Fortune in fact, not one of the traditionally portentous ones.
  • Team Mom: Putting aside her obvious assets, she acts as a mother figure towards her fellow classmates, talking with them and helping them solve their problems. This is perhaps best shown when she personally takes the time to personally tutor Fie before midterms.
  • Tears of Joy: When reuniting with Rean and the rest of Class VII in Cold Steel II, she reveals her identity as a witch and that Vita (who revealed herself to be a member of Ouroboros who assisted the ILF with their terrorist activities) is her sister, along with the truth of the Divine Knights and their trials. Throughout it, she's clearly guilty for keeping her classmates Locked Out of the Loop for so long and fully expects them to get angry and reject her for them. When Rean does the opposite and firmly declares she still belongs in Class VII in spite of it all, she can only shed tears of joy and relief.
  • Teleportation: By Cold Steel III, she's capable of teleporting herself or her allies without needing to access the spirit veins. She pushes the ability to the limit during the finale to get them out of the Gral of Erebos and uses the ability more frequently in Cold Steel IV and Reverie.
  • Took a Level in Badass: During the finale of Cold Steel III she uses Roselia's staff. Together with both Gaius and Laura, she proceeds to help hold off both McBurn and Arianrhod, the two strongest warriors of Ouroboros, at the same time.
  • Walking the Earth: From the end of Cold Steel II onwards, she took on the role of a Wandering Witch to learn more about Erebonia's history, studying the spirit veins in the hopes it would give her a clue to finding Vita.
