Celine as she normally appears
SPOILERS
Voiced by: Mai Aizawa (Japanese), Kira Buckland (English)

A mysterious female cat that hangs around Trista and with a particular interest in Rean. It's later revealed that she is Emma's familiar, being capable of speech and the ability to use magic like her mistress. At the end of the first game she forces Valimar to retreat from the Battle of Trista in order to save Rean's life. In the second game, she joins the latter on his quest to reunite with Emma and the other members of Class VII, offering Rean advice and knowledge about matters regarding the Divine Knights and other supernatural aspects of Erebonia throughout the game.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Prone to be on the receiving end of this thanks to being a cat. Her linked victory quote with Rean in Cold Steel IV has Rean patting her head with Celine claiming she doesn't want it despite smiling.
  • Ambiguously Brown: In human form, her skin is noticeably tan, despite her creator Rose being rather fair in her own human form.
  • Ascended Extra: Goes from being little more than a mysterious background extra to one of the more prominent members of the cast as of Cold Steel II.
  • Brutal Honesty: Her normal behavior. It's also why she doesn't understand human etiquette and social graces.
  • Cat Girl: In Cold Steel IV it's revealed that she has the ability to transform into a human form. Albeit, one that has cat ears and a tail. The only reason she hasn't used before in the past is because she hates using it and didn't really need to.
  • Combat Commentator: During Valimar battles, she'll commentate if you're doing well or you're doing terribly.
  • Convenient Decoy Cat: Agate makes her a decoy in Cold Steel IV when the party raids Dreknor Fortress though the party was worried that Alan would have known Celine. Thankfully, Alan managed not to figure out that the cat he saw was Celine.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Forgets she's taken a human form the first time she enters Valimar in this form.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She tends to snark when given the opportunity.
  • Evil Knockoff: In Reverie, she has a robotic copy fought during Chapter 4 of Rean's route.
  • Familiar: Emma's familiar to be exact. Even if they're far away from each other, Celine will know if she's alright or not. She was created by Emma's "grandmother" Roselia specifically to be her familiar.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: In Cold Steel IV she's playable for certain dungeons in the game and the True Final Boss. Otherwise, she can be used as a Brave Order support party member if Emma's in the party.
  • Jedi Mind Trick: Just like Emma, she can pull this off when she wants thanks to knowledge given to her by Roselia herself.
  • The Lancer: Practically becomes this to Rean in Cold Steel II, often acting as a voice of reason towards him and helping to ensure that he lives up to his potential as Valimar's Awakener.
  • Lethal Joke Character: Doesn't apply to her Cold Steel IV self as her equipment is locked so she's usually gimped and her only primary use is to supply characters with 3 BP, something that items can also do. Meanwhile in Reverie, while she can be fully customized, she doesn't have a S-Craft so many players usually dismiss her. However, she does come equipped with the Magius Master Quartz which increases arts damage if the character equipping it has lower HP. Combine it with Emma's new default Master Quartz, Morgan which does the same thing with the additional feature that it gives out ATS and ADF buffs, stack it on top of each other, lower Celine's HP to a One-Hit-Point Wonder, the improved 150% Domination UR quartz, and as many ATS stat boosting quartz and equipment, and she can deal six digits of damage as all of her attacks including her regular attack use the ATS stat the moment she joins. And because it's a regular craft, there's a high chance that players can pull off a link attack.
  • Making a Splash: Her secondary element in her ARCUS II is water.
  • Ms. Exposition: If something needs to be explained, she'll be there. She even has knowledge about topics that even Emma herself doesn't know about.
  • Playing with Fire: Her primary attack is to throw fireballs at enemies. It's also her primary element.
  • Promoted to Playable: She's playable for a few dungeons in Cold Steel IV but isn't permanently playable, nor does she have an S-Craft. And while she has a field model in Cold Steel IV during Rean's route at the Black Workshop and the Luna Sanctuary, she cannot be controlled as the field character until Reverie.
  • Say My Name: In Cold Steel IV, if the player doesn't choose any girl or chooses Towa, Alfin, or Elise (who are not in present company), then Celine ends up screaming Rean's name in the normal ending.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Milk, despite her trying to act otherwise. Giving her enough milk before departing for your field study every chapter and talking to her nets you one Zeram Powder in the first game. When Kenneth offers her a rather large fish during her first appearance in Cold Steel III, she immediately starts scarfing it down.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: With Roselia. The former is effectively Celine's mother as the one who created her, but the two of them couldn't be anymore different if they tried. Celine generally tends to be more serious and can be somewhat unfriendly due to her tsundere nature, whereas Roselia tends to be more childish and is quite friendly with those around her.
  • You Can Talk?: Everyone's expression when finding out that she can talk, especially Machias. In Cold Steel II, upon hearing her talk again, he comments "Still a talking cat, I see."
  • You Didn't Ask: This is her response when she reveals where they can find large amounts of Zemurian Ore and everyone asks why they didn't tell her before. She's also revealed to know several spells that even Emma doesn't know, and when asked about it, tells Emma that Roselia didn't think she was ready for them and instead gave the knowledge to Celine to pass on once she was.

    Valimar

The Ashen Knight
Voiced by: Daisuke Matsubara (Japanese, Cold Steel games), Junichi Yanagita (Japanese, Reverie), D.C. Douglas (English)

The Ashen Knight, one of the seven Divine Knights of old. At the end of Cold Steel I he was discovered hidden away within the deepest reaches of the 7th floor of the ruins beneath the Old Schoolhouse at Thors Military Academy. After Rean completes a series of trials together with his classmates, Valimar ends up selecting him to become his Awakener with Rean's classmates becoming Secondary Contractors.

Thanks to his great power, Valimar ends up becoming a vital asset to Rean and Class VII during the events of the Erebonian Civil War and afterwards. He also develops a close friendship with Rean, often giving him advice when he needs it. Prior to Valimar's contract with Rean, over two and a half centuries ago during the War of the Lions, his previous Awakener was none other than Dreichels Reise Arnor.

  • Big Brother Mentor: The more he remembers about his past, the more Valimar gives advice to Rean in order for him to better face the challenges ahead. It culminates in him telling Rean that he should be himself when latter starts comparing himself to Dreichels the Lionheart, the legendary emperor and Valimar's previous Awakener.
  • But Now I Must Go: Due to the Great One disappearing, him and the five remaining Divine Knights all disappear together at the end of Cold Steel IV.
  • Character Development: The more Rean powers up his mana, the more Valimar remembers about his past, to the point where he starts sounding more human later instead of using preset speech.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Spirit Path in Cold Steel II is used extensively throughout Act 1 but is never used again because it requires an immense amount of mana and because the party has the Courageous as a means of travel. This is never brought up again until Cold Steel III where Valimar uses it to teleport himself and one Soldat to aid Class VII against the Dark Dragon. It's used again when Valimar and the Soldats use it bypass the barrier surrounding the Gral of Erebos, with Thomas and Roselia opening the way.
  • Combat Commentator: In Cold Steel III, Valimar ends up becoming this for the Divine Knight/Soldat battles.
  • Combination Attack: Valimar and Ordine have a special Unite Attack called Union Slash: Deadly Domination. In Cold Steel II, this replaces the Unite Attack used with secondary contractors. In Cold Steel IV, this is activated when only Valimar and Ordine are in the party, but is replaced by the standard Unite Attacks when another Soldat is added to their team. In the latter case, Deadly Domination can still be activated by landing a finishing blow against a boss with a normal attack or craft.
  • Cool Sword: Valimar's Zemurian Tachi. As part of the name should imply, it was forged from the strongest known metal in the series and made for the use of a giant robot. Unfortunately however, it gets destroyed during the finale of Cold Steel III. It does get repaired by IV, though at that point it's been replaced by the Sword of the End as Valimar's main weapon. It does make an appearance however during a side-quest where Rean and Patrick team up to take down Alan and get rid of his curse, and in Reverie it becomes Rean's primary weapon for his Custom Soldat.
  • Death from Above: Pulls this off during the climax of Cold Steel III, wherein, in order to get to Rean and his students, Valimar pulls out the Zemurian tachi and destroys the barrier surrounding them and the Divine Beast.
  • Evil Knockoff: In Reverie, the penultimate boss of the True Reverie Corridor is "Black Valimar," a copy of Valimar's appearance from when he first absorbed Ishmelga during the climax of Cold Steel IV.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Having awakened Valimar without a weapon, Rean has to rely on the Eight Leaves One Blade style's unarmed form to fight at first until he eventually gets his hands on a sword and later the Zemurian Tachi.
  • He's Back!: He comes back in Reverie, blessing Rean's Tyrfing S with his presence, allowing Rean, Rufus, and Crow stand up against Zoa-Gilstein. And at the end of the game, he responds to Rean's question, even though Rean and Crow believe that Valimar and Ordine no longer possess their soldats while searching the logs a week after their fight, with a "Yes Rean".
  • Last Episode, New Character: In Cold Steel I, being introduced right at the climax of the game.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Compared to Panzer Soldats, Valimar is basically this thanks to his superior mobility, durability, and later its Zemurian Ore enhanced weaponry. It's best seen when Rean and him quickly take down three Soldats at once with a enhanced Spiegel Sword and are later able to take on a Goliath and Kestrel at the same time with the prototype Zemurian Tachi. During the battle against Calvard over Crossbell, Rean and Valimar make their debut by taking down two airships before they could even react.
    • Reverie explains this is due to the Valimar himself having a sentience that allows him to anticipate Rean's moves and react slightly faster than manual controls allow. Rean trying to fight like this in a regular Drakhen burns it out because he's instinctively expecting it to move faster than his inputs and it can't. Makarov tries to replicate this with the Tyrfing units having a learning computer and primitive AI to get the Soldat to react like a Divine Knight would. Which later allows the actual Valimar to possess the system in the finale.
  • Magic Knight: Due to his secondary contractor ability, he can cast Ex-Arts to buff himself and attack enemies.
  • My Sensors Indicate You Want to Tap That: During Alisa's Bareahard Bonding Event, she asks Rean if she could see the inside of Valimar's cockpit for herself. After obliging, the two then go on to have a rather intimate moment with each other which results in Valimar interrupting after sensing Rean and Alisa's increased heart rates, advising medical attention for both until they assure him that they're quite alright much to his confusion.
  • Odd Friendship: Because she is the one who maintain him, he end up being quite close to Mint.
  • Only the Chosen May Ride: Only the Awakener can make a Divine Knight go. However, secondary contractors are allowed inside the Divine Knight though there would be limited space for them since the cockpit was only intended for an Awakener and a familiar. IV shows it's not even just limited to secondary contractors, Rean can bring anyone small enough to fit inside the cockpit with him as he wants as he gives various characters a lift to move around the country quickly during bond events. It's still cramped though and only Rean can actually pilot him.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: After Millium dies and Rean completely loses it, Valimar transforms into his second form which is more demonic in appearance, with the lights on its body turning red, and covered in a dark aura. Even the Sword of the End is immediately corrupted. Valimar and the sword remain this way all the way into Cold Steel IV, and it's not until Rean, having regained his sanity, pilots the former again that the corruption disappears, with sword itself being fully restored later on during Chapter 3.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Last time Valimar was active was over 250 years ago during the War of the Lions. Cold Steel III later reveals that Valimar and its brethren are over 1200 years old as they were first created around the time of the Great Collapse.
  • The Speechless: As a side effect of Rean losing control of himself to the curse, Valimar loses the ability to vocally communicate with those around him in Cold Steel IV. Arianrhod later restores him to normal as a parting gift to Rean on her deathbed.
  • Summon to Hand: It was implied in the games that this is how Valimar produces the sword to his hand, but the Northern War anime shows off this trope in play.
  • Super Robot: If the Panzer Soldats are Real Robot types, then Divine Knights are this.
  • So Proud of You: Once his memories are restored, he express this sentiment towards Dreichels as he find gratifying to learn that his hopelessly optimist Awakener is now revered as the Father of the Renaissance.
    • His final words to Rean before he disappear are these.
  • The Bus Came Back: Briefly returns in spirit form alongside El-Prado and Ordine to power up Rean's Tyrfing for the final battle of Reverie. Afterwards the Knights leave again, although Valimar says he's always watching over Rean and implies he can and will return again if Rean truly needs him to do so. The epilogue even shows that he can even communicate with Rean through the Tyrfing's monitor.
  • Transforming Mecha: Cold Steel III reveals that Valimar has the ability to do this. The first time happens when Rean goes berserk against the Nameless One, transforming Valimar into a more demonic version of himself where his horn splits into two long ones, he arms become more spikier, he loses the wings on his back (later replaced with a pair of small boosters in IV), and gains a back skirt tail. The lights on his body also turn red, the one on his chest gaining an eye. These later disappear after Rean regains control of himself in IV.
    • It again happens during IV after Valimar absorbs Zector. His body turns silver in color, the spikes on his forearms become shorter, and his two horned head turns back into a single horned head but more ornate. After absorbing El-Prado, who had absorbed Argreion prior, the boosters on his back are replaced by a pair of angelic looking wings.
  • Unexpected Gameplay Change: Instead of using the standard battle system, Valimar battles use a Tactical Rock–Paper–Scissors system.
  • The Voiceless: He does not speak during any of his appearances in Northern War.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Powerful as he is, Valimar is actually one of the weakest Divine Knights. He compensates for this through his Awakener's own natural skill, and with Rean, his ability to create special combat links with the members of Class VII who are considered secondary contractors thanks to having aided Rean during his trial and their general close bond with him. This allows them, and later New Class VII as well, to give aid to Rean and Valimar through a variety of special artes that can be used for both offense and support. Valimar can also share his abilities with the Soldats of secondary contractors, giving him an edge in team battles. Winning the Rivalries allows him to either recruit the opposing Divine Knights as Kin or absorb their power to increase his stats, eventually making him Strong and Skilled.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Durable as it is, the Zemurian Tachi's blade ends up snapping in half during the battle against Aion Type-Alpha II in Cold Steel III. It's later repaired by Schmidt, but it's again destroyed during the battle against the Nameless One in the finale. Rean replaces it with the Sword of the End afterwards, but the tachi itself ends up being restored again some time during IV.
