  • Magical Girl:
    • The anime channel on the crystal ball presents the Golden Guard as this as a blatant Sailor Moon parody.
    • It's the name of this comic, which shows how Luz took on her Titan form.
  • Mama Bear:
    • Camila is regularly shown to be willing to move Heaven and Earth if it means protecting her family. Whether that means running an armored truck off-road to save Vee from a government prisoner transport, beating the shit out of Odalia with "Logic" and "Reason" when she tries mocking Amity again, to even threatening the Collector into sitting down and having a civil talk after they threaten to put Luz through a neverending nightmare, Camila will protect her family no matter what.
    • Eda attacks Boscha during a Penstagram stream after she starts a challenge where she insults Luz for being human and calls her "round ears". She later doodles on Odalia' face when she guilt-trips Luz into breaking up with Amity.
  • Married in the Future: While looking through time pools, Luz ends up finding one that leads to a couple of years in the future during her and Amity's wedding.
    Lilith: What did you see?
    Luz: (blushing) Spoilers.
  • Married to the Job: Taken literally in one comic. After Lilith is asked out by someone one too many times, she goes to Darius so the council can make it legal for someone to marry their job. Lilith chooses to be married to her position as a "bad-girl historian".
  • Marry for Love: Boscha mentions to Jay while giving her some family history that her mother used to be the favorite daughter of a wealthy socialite, but she threw it all away to marry someone that her mother didn't approve of.
  • Master of Disguise: Hunter is actually quite good at disguises, able to dress himself up so that not even Luz can recognize him. Until he opens his mouth, at which point his tooth gap gives him away.
  • The Matchmaker:
  • Meaningful Echo: After King gives Francois to the Collector before they leave, King tells them to take care of Francois as "The strong must protect the weak.". Years later when the Archivists attack the Demon Realm, the Collector floats the doll safely back to King while saying the same phrase before standing against them.
  • Meet the In-Laws:
    • Camila and Odalia have a sitdown at the Noceda house.
Odalia: It occurs to me that your family- isn't very rich.
Camila: (Death Glare) It occurs to me that you are a lil bitc
      Luz: (nervous) WHO WANTS MADUROS?!
    • Luz introduces a nervous Amity to Camila in one comic, and after making a bad joke about stealing her daughter, she looks down in shame, even as Camila reassures her that Luz makes those kinds of jokes all the time.
    • Parodied in "One Fear". The kids prepare to do insanely dangerous and terrifying things like confronting Belos or fighting the Collector, and Hunter is fully prepared to do so. But when he has to meet Willow's dads, he immediately chickens out, and Willow has to drag him in vines.
    • This comic has Hunter meeting Willow's dads. Harvey and Gilbert agreed beforehand to do the Good Cop/Bad Cop routine, but they mess it up twice: first by both of them being nice, then by both of them being intimidating.
    • Skara introduces Viney to her father in one comic. While he initially doesn't approve, he soon changes his mind when Viney shows him an easier way to get griffin hair for his musical instruments.
  • Messianic Archetype: Played for Laughs. Luz is baffled by the fact that a church woshipping her has popped up on the Boiling Isles until she goes over her list of accomplishments.
Luz: All I did was fight Belos... getting myself killed saving a star god... being revived by the Boiling Isles Himself, coming back to life with the power of the Titan-... okay yeah that explains it.
  • Milestone Birthday Angst: On Principal Bump's birthday, Luz, Willow, and Gus intend to surprise him by decorating his office. When Gus goes to get him, he learns that Bump hates his birthday due to being reminded of how old he is. The trio soon get in trouble trying to take their decorations down and wrecking the office, but Bump does appreciate what they were doing.
  • Milestone Celebration: An In-Universe take for Reddit's Owl House content.
  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: When Odalia tries to trick Amity into wearing a new amulet, one that would let Odalia hear her thoughts, Amity gives it to Hooty. Odalia quickly regrets it.
  • Mini-Mecha: Played for Laughs. After King accidentally impales Francois on his finger, Hunter patches him up, but tells King he's too big to play with the small rabbit plush, so he presents King with a giant Francois. King is grateful, but would prefer his original plush, prompting Hunter to reveal that the original Francois is actually attached to the giant one, piloting it like a mech. It even has small levers.
  • A Minor Kidroduction: According to this, Willow met Amity during a boiling rainstorm. Willow was rushing home and got distracted by a flower, desperately trying to protect it until Amity arrived, shielded both of them and they hit it off.
  • Moment Killer: Lilith claims she brings Hooty to the library expansion project to oversee everything. In reality, it's to keep him from interrupting Eda and Raine's time alone.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: In one strip the Owl Beast acts like this, instead of trying to eat Luz she proceeds to brood her like an egg. While Luz finds this adorable, she also feels like she's literally being suffocated by the larger mass of the Owl Beast.
  • Morton's Fork:
    • Hunter places Luz in one during a game of Truth or Dare when she picks Truth and he asks her who the most important woman in her life is. Camila, Eda, and Amity all await Luz's answer while she's sweating bullets.
    • Played for Laughs in one strip where Amity contemplates what it will mean for her depending on who becomes Hunter's legal guardian. Either he's adopted by Camila, meaning he'll be Amity's brother-in-law when she and Luz get married, or Darius will take custody of him, and he'll be Amity's stepbrother once her father and Darius end up together. Either way, she'd be stuck with him.
  • Mugging the Monster: Played for Laughs. Just before gong to sleep, Luz tells her friends about King being a Titan, which causes them to stay awake all night dwelling on all the times they slighted, embarrassed, threatened or was cruel to him.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: One time, Vee and her friends encounter a Guzzlebeast, a demon resembling six-legged wolf. When they lose access to its weakness, Vee shoves everyone into a cabinet and absorbs the Guzzlebeast's magic to drive it away.
  • Multi-Part Episode: "Her Blessing", a three-part comic based around Odalia attempting to convince Luz to break up with Amity who talks some sense into her girlfriend.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: In one comic Luz combines a leafblower with toilet paper glyphs to create a flamethrower, armor-piercing ice gun, grappling hook, and even adds tracer rounds.
  • Mundane Solution: When Willow tasks Amity with watching Luz while she's an otter, Amity asks how she's supposed to do that. She just places Luz in her hood while's she's playfully batting Amity's ponytail.
  • Mundane Utility:
    • Upon finding that snails had heavily decreased in value over time, Luz and Lilith go on a spending spree off of 3 modern-day snails in the Deadwardian Era, getting a month's worth of supplies and a new pair of gloves for Amity to replace her old one that stores the group's supplies of Titan Blood.
    • A similar strip features Luz and Lilith traveling ten minutes into the past so that Lilith can get a not dog.
    • While carving her Palisman, Luz figures out that the chunks of the Palistrom wood she chiseled off can be used to create tiny staffs, which she and Eda use to arm the CATS with.
    • While attending La Tomatina with Luz, Amity uses her Abomination magic to conjure up multiple hands to pelt other people with tomatoes.
    • After capturing Raine by immobilizing them with their coven sigil, Kikimora does the same to Darius after he makes a backhanded compliment regarding her size.
    • Amity uses her abomination magic to unclog Camila's car when the radiator gets clogged.
    • Amity also conjures up cookies made from abomination goo to satisfy Vee's magic cravings.
Vee: You are like, the coolest.
      Amity: I know.
    • Luz's backpack falls apart, so Stringbean offers herself as a substitute. Unfortunately, an errant feather causes her to sneeze, nearly impaling King with Luz's school supplies.
    • One comic shows the benefits of Camila knowing so many witches. Willow uses plant magic to grow fruit and vegetables for her, Alador creates a new engine for her car, Amity creates an Abomination to help out with her chores around the house, Gus gives her a concealment stone to use if she wants to change her look (along with Hunter sewing some new outfits for her), Viney helps heal any minor injuries she has, and Selene uses oracle magic to give her tips on which stocks to invest in.
    • It would seem that Vee doesn't fully shapeshift whenever she uses the stairs; rather, she just grows a pair of legs.
    • In order to help herself wake up in the morning, Skara uses a Bard magic spell to increase her willpower.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Invoked by Hunter, who kept drinking coffee to avoid going to sleep.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • In one comic, Odalia and Amity get into an argument (seemingly over Luz, although it's not clear) and Odalia raises her hand to hit her daughter. However, Luz steps in front of Amity to protect her, causing Odalia to have a flashback of Alador doing the same for her. Realizing that she's become her own mother, she wordlessly leaves the girls alone.
    • After seemingly inviting Luz to her birthday party as an olive branch, only to perform a cruel prank on her, Boscha is left looking at the gift Luz stayed up all night to make for her, clearly having second thoughts about her bullying of Luz.
    • As Camila faces Grometheus who's holding Luz in its clutches, it tells her that it's no imposter, but the Luz that tries to be normal for her. Camila grasps that she was wrong for sending Luz to Reality Check Camp and apologizes for making Luz feel bad for being different and that she loves that side of her. This gives Luz the courage to mentally fight back against Grom.
    • In one comic, Raine (after their memories were altered by Terra) takes Kikimora out for a day on the town after her family rejects her. After an unspecified period of time where Raine learns the truth and bitterly ends their friendship, Kikimora is shown to be very upset by what happened afterward.
    • When they were kids Amity tried to get Emira's attention as she made abomination constructs, only for Emira to yell at her for making a mess around the living room and making Amity cry. When Em sees the constructs are shaped like her, she apologizes to Amity and lets her make an abomination bow on her head.
    • After Luz mentioned that King is a Titan, she wished Amity, Willow, Gus, and Hunter a good night, and started going to sleep. Amity, Willow, Gus, and Hunter then woke up with their eyes wide open, thinking about all the times they mistreated King without realizing it. Specifically, Willow trying to peel him, thinking he was a furry fruit after her memories accidentally got burnt; Gus refusing to interview him; Amity squishing his cupcake; and Hunter threatening to drown him.
    • Luz has this reaction upon seeing Hunter cut his hair in anger in response to her teasing his hairstyle.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: When Camila gets concerned about the budget with the extra mouths to feed, Luz suggests that they could rob a bank, describing how her friends could do it easily. Camila lets out a chuckle and then realizes that Luz isn't laughing.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Before "Watching and Dreaming" aired, several comics set in the future would have Luz dressed in an outfit resembling the Good Witch Azura, but around the time Ayzee was introduced, Mark stopped drawing Luz in that kind of outfit. In "Grom Factor", Luz would once again wear an Azura costume as part of a roleplaying session with Amity (who dresses up as Hecate), and would continue to wear it during her mission to help Milan save Grom.
    • After getting his hair cut by Willow, Hunter is hesitant to look in the mirror due to seeing "A gloomier and edgier version" of himself, AKA, Caleb. When Willow looks in the same mirror, she and Hunter see a reflection of Beta Willow.

  • Rage Breaking Point:
    • Hunter initially tries to brush off Luz's claim that he looks like a grumpy anglerfish in a book she was reading, but after Amity, Gus, and even Willow break out into laughter, Hunter furiously gives himself a quick haircut so he no longer has the stray lock of hair that drew the comparisons to the anglerfish in the first place.
    • After Darius makes Eda do a Flight Safety PSA, which she did very unhappily with obvious faked cheer, when he asks her to be more enthusiastic, Eda flips and enthusiastically gives very bad advice in flying as dangerously as possible. Darius just gives in.
  • Real Trailer, Fake Movie: Poster variants. Following the Grand Finale of the series, while Dana Terrace has said there may be more Expanded Universe material or a movie in the future, nothing is certain yet. Mark however went ahead and created four posters for hypothetical entries in the series:
    • "The Owl House: Starlight", a Big Damn Movie taking place after the epilogue, focusing on the Hexsquad, Eda, King, and Camila, and taking place on both Earth and the Boiling Isles.
    • "Eda Vs. The Boiling Isles", a prequel set during Eda's time at Hexside, focusing on her, Lilith, and Raine.
    • "Evelyn", an Origins Episode for Evelyn, Caleb and Philip Wittebane, and Flapjack, set during colonial times and hinting at how Philip would become Emperor Belos.
    • "Cabin7", a spinoff focusing on Vee, Masha, and their two friends while at Reality Check Summer Camp, and the oddities they find there.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Bump, like in the show. Despite being a bit strict and sadistic at times, he genuinely cares about the students and their safety. After Luz, Willow and Gus trash his office in an attempt at throwing him a birthday party, he orders them to clean it up before admitting that they are good kids. Bria even identifies him as this as soon as she sees him for the first time, even if she doesn't believe a principal who cares about their students exists.
  • Red Mage: Eileen becomes a mixed-track student after being introduced to illusions by Gus, using illusions as a way to communicate while still being on the potions track.
  • Refuge in Audacity: "Don't Believe Everything You Read On The Internet" has some teens catch Willow using her plant magic to save a raccoon and post it online. Predictably, no one in the comments actually believes it's real.
  • Refusal of the Call: Boscha initially declines to join Eda's resistance, but after hearing that Amity is probably dead and spending the night mourning her, she gives in and joins up.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Well, more "confirmed to be related":
    • The two unnamed potion track students from "Them's the Breaks, Kid" were only implied to be Boscha's mothers in the show, but several comics specifically depict them as such.
    • Vee is shown to still be living with the Nocedas by the time of the epilogue in the show, though whether or not she is legally a member of the family is unstated. Here, she's plainly stated to have been adopted by Camila and there are multiple comics devoted to her and Luz's relationship as sisters.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Namedropped in this strip, as Pandora and Jay discuss how likely Ayzee and Milan are to hook up after being left alone.
  • Revealing Continuity Lapse: One April Fools' Day comic has Caleb bringing Evelyn breakfast in bed, but something is clearly wrong as little details change from panel to panel (like the time on the clock or the picture frame). It becomes obvious the longer that it goes on that Evelyn is simply dreaming that Caleb is still alive after Philip killed him.
  • Revealing Cover Up: When Luz and Amity try to kiss in public, Luz asks Stringbean to turn into a hat to cover their faces before doing the deed. Gus and Willow who were sitting at the next table over tell them that it just makes their kiss even more obvious, much to their awkwardness.
  • Rewatch Bonus: "Illusion lesson" is all about Gus teaching a university class on how to spot people in disguise. On reread, it become very obvious that "Gus" is actually Amity under one of his illusions, even doing her hand on hip pose from her reference sheet in the first panel.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: As the Collector forces Luz to be Belos, they ask if she can do a better job as emperor than he did. Luz proceeds to complete several beneficial tasks before stepping down from the monarchy and turning herself in, to the Collector's dismay.
The Collector: When I said "I put you in his shoes", I didn't mean "Goody Two-Shoes!"
  • Ridiculous Future Inflation: In one strip, Luz wanted to buy Amity a new glove, but found she only had three snailsnote . Later on, she and Lilith make an excursion through a time pool into the Deadwardian Era, where Lilith explains that a snail was worth 100' times more than it is in the present. This prompts Luz and Lilith to take advantage of the economy.
Lilith: (Slinging a bag over her shoulder) Eda! We bought a whole month's worth of essentials!
Amity: (In response to the new gift Luz gave her) Spider silk gloves? But how did you afford these?
  • Ring-Ring-CRUNCH!: In Alarm we see Willow smash an alarm clock rather than waking up; then a plant enchanted and trained as a backup unfurls, takes up a bell and hammer, notes what is left of the more mechanical clock, and evidently thinks the better of it as it quietly refurls.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: "Waiting It Out" is a comic where Luz and Amity learn the plot of the latest Good Witch Azura book was leaked online, sixteen days before it would hit store shelves, so they barricade themselves inside to avoid spoilers. The comic was uploaded around the same time the episode "For the Future" was leaked online.note
  • Rule of Three: In "Mama Eda", Camila warns Edric twice not to prank anyone during Luz and Amity's wedding ceremony, and he doesn't heed it. For the third try Eda warns him that he'll be stuck on Hooty cleaning detail for the rest of his life if he does, and he submits.
    S
  • Sacrificial Lion: Steve was groomed to be this by a writer so that his death would motivate the main characters once things got serious.
  • Sadistic Choice:
    • "Number Six" shows the basilisk of the same identity being ordered by Kikimora to kill Luz or be killed herself, but she hesitates when she learns that Luz knows where Vee is.
    • In this strip, Belos tells Luz he'll kill Amity unless she gives him the portal key instead of destroying it. Amity encourages Luz to destroy the key since Belos would kill them either way, but Luz hesitates to make a choice.
    • Subverted in "Trolley Problem". A round of the Collector's game makes Luz, Eda, Amity and Alador choose between two tracks with one person and four people tied to them. The problem is, he tied Harvey, Salty, Viney and Morton, people they actually like to one track, and tied Odalia to the other. Alador points out how easy a choice it would be for them, so the Collector tries reshuffling. This time, it fails because he tied Steve to one track, and tied Terra, Adrian, Tibbles and Kikimora to the other. Alador again points this out.
  • Sanity Slippage: The events of the Day of Unity have clearly taken their toll on Odalia's mind, as she now believes that the amputation of her arm was a test by the Collector where it's clearly not, and intends to brainwash Amity into becoming a playmate for the Collector.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Subverted. During their time in the human realm, it appears that Hunter is using this to mock Luz's many actions. However, when Luz expresses irritation at his apparent sarcasm, Hunter reveals that he doesn't grasp the concept of why you would say something you don't actually mean. At this answer, Luz then realizes that the opposite trope has been true the whole time, to her joy.
  • Sarcastic Confession: When a classmate questions how Luz suddenly has a new sister that doesn't look anything like her, Vee gives a full version of her backstory as a shapeshifting refuge from another world with a straight face (freaking out Luz in the process) before "admitting" that she's just adopted.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Invoked. After Stringbean is seen flying in front of a pair of senior citizens, they call the police to report a girl with a flying mini-demon. What the cop sees is Luz pretending to control Stringbean posing as a drone.
  • Schmuck Bait: When the Collector tags Luz during one of his games of tag, Luz pretends to not know where he went even though he just hid behind a rock. Later on, a "KEEP OUT" sign is placed on his hiding spot, and he still believes Luz is struggling to look for him.
  • Schoolyard Bully All Grown Up: Donwplayed. While Boscha is at the very least civil with the Hexsquad as an adult, she still tried to get Jay to form a rivalry with Pandora.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Famous!:
    • Luz and Eda take advantage of their "saviors of the Boiling Isles" when they start a beer smuggling operation.
    • Eda is told off by Darius for commiting a robbery because he is the government's security advisor and is probably legally obligated to report that. She responds that because she is a "national hero" for saving the Boiling Isles, she's not going to jail no matter what she does.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • Luz pulls this after returning home and learning how much more complicated Vee has made her life in her absence.
    • Tibbles and Kikimora play along with Odalia's evil revolutionary scheme while they're all in jail, but immediately ditch her once they're pardoned and given community service, respectively.
  • Second Love: A few months after ending it with Odalia, Alador downloads a dating app. He looks rather stunning once Amity gives him a makeover, resulting in Darius reluctantly swiping right on him.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: "Home" sees Belos defeated and trapped in a bubble in the In Between Realm. Occasionally, they open a portal to it, and Hunter asks Belos if he regrets his actions. Belos, being Belos, adamantly refuses and continues insisting that murdering Caleb was the right choice for choosing the Boiling Isles, a "dump", over his real home. Hunter admonishes him for having learned nothing.
Hunter: After all these years, you still don't get it, do you? Home isn't where you're from... Home is- Home is where you feel belonged.
  • Serious Business: All over the place.
  • Sexless Marriage: In an altered timeline where Luz never came to the Boiling Isles, Amity ended up together with Hunter as part of an Arranged Marriage. While the two are shown to sleep in the same bed, there is a large pile of pillows separating their sides (though given the fact that Amity is a lesbian, this is to be expected).
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • The Emerald Entrails in general, with the exception of Hunter and Willow, ship the two after Willow mistakenly asks Hunter to send her some cute pictures of Flapjack in the team's group chat. Willow threatens to delete her account when they take things out of proportion, but Hunter doesn't seem to care, although that's a given since this is just after the traumatic reveals of "Hollow Mind" and he's just happy to have friends.
    • Despite being their enemy, Belos is depicted as one for Lumity in some earlier Owl House comic strips.
    • While playing a headband guessing game, Luz figures out that the person who Hunter is describing is Willow. Instead of announcing that she figured it out, she asks more specific questions that perfectly describe what Hunter thinks of Willow, essentially getting him to confess what he feels about her. Hunter points out that Luz is practically describing who the person is before suddenly realizing what's going on and looking behind himself to see an extremely flustered Willow.
    • In this comic, Gus notices Hunter and Willow fell asleep on him, so he sneakily removes himself from between them so their faces touch.
    • "Upgrade" shows that Pandora is this to Ayzee and Milan, leaving them alone so Ayzee can undergo a Relationship Upgrade with her crush.
  • Shipping Torpedo:
    • As in canon, Downplayed by Boscha. She doesn't like Lumity, and she hates the two having public displays of affection everywhere she goes. Too bad Luz, Amity, and Willow are actively gunning for this reaction.
    • Odalia also doesn't like the fact that Luz and Amity are dating, and is shown in multiple comics trying to end the relationship one way or another.
    • She is also this to Emira and Hunter, while also unknowingly being a Shipper on Deck at the same time, having set up an arranged marriage between her eldest daughter and the Golden Guard, unaware the two are the same.
  • Ship Tease: Along with canon couples, several characters are implied to be interested or paired with each other.
    • Multiple comics tease Hunter with Edric and Emira, mostly showing him dating the latter.
    • Some comics hint an attraction between Willow and Skara: one shows Skara saving Willow from Boscha's pranks, another shows her watching one of Willow's workout videos with a lovestruck look. This one has Willow repair Skara's harp with a vine so she can compete in a talent show, which Skara notices after she won and hugs her harp in admiration.
    • Post-Owl House comics such as "Some Are Canon-er Than Others" pair together Alador/Darius, Gus/Mattholomule, and Skara/Viney while making Eda/Raine and Vee/Masha official.
    • "Walkthrough" shows Ayzee having a very obvious attraction towards Milan and as she goes into extensive detail on how to beat the seventh chapter of "Coven Quest III", Milan looks at her like she's fallen for her as well. By Milan's second appearance, they share their First Kiss.
  • Shock and Awe: Downplayed and played with when Luz pretends to use a lightning spell on Boscha, utilizing static electricity to sell the illusion.
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: Hunter feels that an artist commission he hired is a rip-off considering they ask for "100 human snails" to design his OC. Lucky for him, it's Luz and she gives him the design on the house.
  • Shock Party: In "Surprise", the Hexsquad throw the Collector a Surprise Party for their birthday, but they reflexively shoot a laser at one of the trees. Downplayed in the sense that nobody was hurt, but the planners were scared.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Luz and Amity of course in some comics. They even do it on purpose once just to mess with Boscha.
  • Sick Episode: This strip shows Amity having come down with a cold and Luz taking care of her.
  • Side Bet: Alador realizes that Odalia made one saying Darius would win the Bonesborough Brawl and cleaned up when Alador won.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Alador and Darius alternate between this and Vitriolic Best Buds in several comics.
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • One comic has Darius designing a new uniform for the CATS during a strategy meeting.
    • In a comic called "Priority", Alador fights the pain of the Draining Spell and makes his way to the Titan's Head... so he can laugh at Darius as he's being drained as well.
  • Slept Through the Apocalypse: Subverted. The Collector thinks this happened, as when he goes to visit the Owl House after a nap, he sees it covered in cobwebs and three tombstones set in front. In reality, King, Eda, and Raine were celebrating Halloween, and they just got back from trick-or-treating.
  • Slumber Party: Downplayed, as Amity improvises one for Luz since she feels they don't have time for one with the Day of Unity approaching.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: The previous Golden Guard before Hunter was this, having originally stolen the portal from Belos and requesting Darius to teleport it and bury it near a ruin. The portal would be found by Eda when she ran away from home, who would use it to steal from the human world and eventually lead Luz to arrive in the Demon Realm.
  • Smug Smiler: Hunter responds with this when Eda tells Lilith that him being a clone of their ancestor's husband technically makes him older than them, to Lilith's ire.
  • Sneaking Out at Night: The Hexsquad once attempted this after seeing a news sighting of Belos near the Gravesfield Cemetery. Camila catches them as soon as they leave the house, only to agree to drive them when Luz offers to let her hit Belos with her bat.
  • Sneaking Snacks: Ayzee attempts to use an invisibility glyph to do this but she forgets the outer circle resulting in her getting caught.
  • So Proud of You:
    • Luz, when Gus demonstrates the Rick Roll meme as the most important moment of human history.
    • Perry expresses pride in Gus for grilling Kikimora about Raine's disappearance.
    • One aptly-titled comic called "She's so proud of her" shows Lilith, having run into Amity while shopping, express pride upon learning her former apprentice kicked the Golden Guard's butt.
    • Even if Hunter won't admit it, he's impressed that Luz got his Flash Step down right out of the box.
    • Luz praises Amity over building an abomination-powered alarm clock.
    • This comic has Hunter trying to teach Pandora how to perform a shoulder throw... while she's a baby. Willow sarcastically asks how it's going and Hunter says he's not impressed, before she proceeds to perfectly do the maneuver on her wolf plush. The joy in their eyes speaks volumes.
Hunter: (awed) I didn't just imagine that, did I?
      Willow: (also awed) Nope.
    • "Role Model" ends with Vee saying this after Stringbean emulates how snake-shifters act from her, mostly sitting on the couch eating snacks.
    • Said word-for-word by Hunter to Pandora for defending herself from bullies and fighting off everyone else who came after her.
    • Eda's reaction to King trying to blackmail her into giving him an allowance.
  • Soda-Candy 'Splosion: In one strip, Willow and Gus mention how they once knew a witch called Lucine (an Identical Stranger to Luz) who decided one day to drink an entire bottle of fizzy Coke and Mentos. We don't see the aftermath, but it's confirmed that it killed her, and seriously traumatized Gus and Willow.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Played for Laughs. When Eda gets suspicious of Puppet Raine (who was recently possessed by Belos), she asks them what her favorite swear word is.
  • Sore Loser: Losing to Hunter in a video game prompts the Collector to turn him into a puppet out of spite. Hunter using a Blue Shell and rubbing it in sealed his fate.
  • Soul-Crushing Desk Job: In this comic, the Collector says to win his game, Luz will be subjected to "the most soul-crushing scenarios known to man". Luz says she can handle it, before the Collector snaps their fingers and puts her in an office job on a Monday with Boscha as her Mean Boss (and turns Stringbean into a pencil holder). Both Luz and Stringbean scream in horror.
  • Speak in Unison: Comedic zig-zag. This instance has Luz and Amity tell each other that they don't want Amity to keep making fairy pies for Luz. However, while Amity explains how time-consuming it is to make the pies, Luz confesses that she's been releasing the fairies so she doesn't have to eat them. They're relieved and split a PB&J while the pie makes a run for it.
  • Spit Take:
  • Spirit Advisor:
    • In this comic, Gus digs up the memory of Caleb so he and Hunter can have a heart-to-heart about being his own person.
    • In this comic, memories of six previous Golden Guards return to congratulate him on being the first Grimwalker to realize Belos is evil and survive. And give him dating advice.
    • In "Cue", while Hunter and Willow are on a date she signals she wants to kiss him (which Hunter doesn't get), Caleb manifests to tell him that's his cue. And to pull up his fly.
  • Spot the Imposter:
    • When the Greater Basilisk escapes, Willow asks Boscha to say what she really thinks of her to prove she's the real deal. Boscha proceeds to give an extremely backhanded compliment, causing Willow to shoot her with a tranquilizer before confirming that it was the real Boscha.
    • Made into a game by Luz and Vee when the latter disguises herself as Luz and visits the Owl House. Luz allows Amity to ask two questions to identify who the real Luz is. King, however, simply and annoyedly points out the real Luz to Amity, who proceeds to kiss her on the lips, much to Luz's pleasure. Though that joy quickly evaporates into horror when Amity states she didn't actually know who the real Luz was.
Luz: (upset) You could've kissed the wrong Luz...
Amity: Just kidding! I knew it was you!
King: Dang it, I should've pointed at Vee!
Vee: (disappointed) I want a girlfriend.
  • Spotting the Thread: Gus is shown giving a lesson on this subject in "Illusion Lesson" when teaching people how to identify people hiding under an illusion. Then, when asked if she'd be able to recognize people like that, Luz reveals that "Gus" was actually Amity in disguise the whole time.
  • Staged Pedestrian Accident: Done by Eda, though she fails to notice that she jumped in front of Luz and Amity's car.
  • Staging an Intervention:
  • Stating the Simple Solution:
    • Luz, Willow, and Gus help dye Amity's hair from green back to brown at one point. When she worries over her mother's reaction, Gus recommends she hide it with an illusion of her green hair.
    • During a date with Amity, Luz's pen breaks while she's drawing a glyph. Amity soon gifts her stamps with glyph symbols.
    • When Eda finds Lilith having a nightmare, she travels into her mind to put her at ease. She later shows a memory revealing she's been doing it since they were kids.
Lilith: You could've just woken me up, you know.
      Eda: Oh, shut up.
    • In one comic Eda suggests that Raine, instead of taking out several coven heads at once as well as themself, could just avoid the Day of Unity entirely and foil Belos that way. In the comic at least, it worked.
    • Another has Luz explain to Amity that she carved her palisman into an egg so it could have the option to choose just like her. Then Amity says this:
Amity: Because an egg was easier to carve, wasn't it?
      Luz: ...Yeah.
    • When Viney's Beast Taming business falls flat, Luz suggests she make use of her healing skills. Viney rhetorically asks why humans would pay next to nothing to be healed with magic, and she's last seen healing an injury while Luz mans the phone saying appointments with Viney are booked for the next month.
    • "...Just Use Illusion Magic Next Time" spells this out, as Clover is forced to stay at home with Willow while everyone else takes their palismen to the park, as Luz knows a bee the size of a bowling ball will draw more attention than the other ordinary-looking palismen.
    • Skara's father runs a business that makes musical instruments, but they hunt down griffins for their hair for strings. Viney, being the owner of a griffin herself, suggests that they could simply harvest griffin hair from their hairballs instead. Not only does a harp Skara uses with the hair of one of Puddles' hairballs feel and sound better, Viney offers to collect griffin hairballs for Skara's father, saving him a lot of money on resources for hunting griffins.
  • Stealth Pun: In one strip, Flapjack constantly chirps to Hunter that he loves him in order to get the same response. Then he deliberately does it while Willow is present, making it seem like Hunter was talking to her, which leads her to ask him out on a movie date. He's a wingman.
  • Stock Money Bag: One with the currency symbol for snails appears, Amity using it to pay Eda for photos of Luz in her Titan form.
  • Story Arc: Most of Mark's comics are self-contained, but there are also stories that span multiple entries.
    • "Grom Factor": Grom season rolls around for Ayzee and Milan, and while Ayzee recklessly volunteers to be Grom Queen in an attempt to break away from her parents' shadow, Milan does some research and learns the truth behind Grometheus the Fear Bringer.
    • "A Little Hint of Blue": After a little misunderstanding involving a kraken-summoning water balloon, Skara and Viney become friends, with the hint of there being more than just a little spark between the two.
    • "The Hexsquad": When Gus is kidnapped by some of Emperor Belos' former servants, the Hexsquad, with the help of former Golden Guard Bob, band together to save their friend.
    • "Fight Coven": As Ayzee learns more about hand-to-hand combat while taking part in Mama Eda's "Fight Coven", she gains the attention of a mysterious group of people.
    • Parodied in one comic, where Mark only draws the end of a 25-part story, "Murder on the Anterior Express"
  • Strong Family Resemblance:
    • Luz as an adult is shown to highly resemble Camila, wearing a pair of square framed glasses and having much curlier hair with a grey streak in the same location Camila gained one in Season 3.
    • All but one of the Fan-Created Offspring (Ayzee, Pandora, and Jay) highly resemble their parents, Ayzee and Pandora taking after Luz and Willow respectively, while Jay is the near-spitting image of Boscha. Justified in Jay's case as Jay is a Grimwalker, meaning she is a clone of Boscha rather than her natural born offspring. The Collector even calls Ayzee and Pandora "lazy designs".
Ayzee: We... don't look that much like our parents, do we?
      Milan: Um...
Jay: Yup, basically carbon copies. Sucks to be you two.
  • Subverted Kids' Show: Played for laughs, as one strip shows people regretting being misled (Lilith for believing the curse would only be temporary, Hunter for thinking Belos really cared about him, etc.), with the last being a viewer who thought that they were just in for a "silly owl show."
  • Sudden Anatomy: Since ">:3", some comics have Stringbean grow an arm to make hand gestures. In "Shhh", she mimics Hunter's forelock while mocking him.
  • Sudden Game Interface: Invoked and downplayed. Gus gifts Ayzee an enchanted stone that gives her an illusionary RPG HUD while wearing it.
  • Suddenly Speaking: A variant. Using Camila's tablet, Ghost is able to tell Camila she's hungry and how to feed her, then proceeds to give her advice on communicating with Luz.
  • Super Drowning Skills: As it turns out, witches have no need for swimming when the ocean of the Demon Realm is hot enough to turn humans into skeletons and clothes by the time they wash up to shore... which means they don't know how to swim, meaning the Human Realm's ocean is just as dangerous.
  • Super Mode: Luz already had one via her Titan form, albeit a one-time-only form she only had access to thanks to The Titan giving her said power for the final battle. "Ready for the Battle" however shows that King can temporarily grant the form to Luz again via his own power, making it a more traditional case.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: Due to having spent several months in the Boiling Isles, Luz's skills in running, swimming, and bicycling have been boosted. One incident which contributed to this was a time she made the mistake of trying to pet a werewolf, which chased her in the areas around Bonesborough, running, swimming, and even cycling after her.
  • Super-Scream: Trapped and at the mercy of Kikimora's Abomatons, Luz exploits King's sonic scream by ripping fur off his back with abomination goo so he'll yell louder, blowing Kiki away.
Luz: (bandaging King up as he glares at her) Well, on the plus side...we did escape!
  • Super-Speed: Part of Hettie Cutburn's Healing skills includes being able to perform surgery in under a second. She demonstrates by stealing a scout's kidney, and pretends she took it from Darius so fast he couldn't feel it.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That:
    • While Camila and Eda argue over whether Luz should spend more time in the human realm or the Boiling Isles, they each come up with a solution. While Eda's is a fight to the death, Camila's is to propose to her. A blushing Eda decides that would work.
    • The title of one comic, where Willow asks her parents about what her feelings for Hunter mean, and they tell her that it's "advanced friendship," which they had before they started dating.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Occasionally Belos is shown as suffering from this, with various comics having him suffer the men under him letting his prisoners go for fanart, grabbing the school bullies instead of Luz's friends to hold hostage, and watching Alador and Darius argue over who is better at the task of killing and overthrowing him.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When confronted by Boscha in the Detention Pit, Amity questions if Boscha has a crush on her. Boscha does not do a good job of denying it. She eventually admits she does after Amity gushes about all the cute couple things she and Luz did in the Human Realm.
Boscha: What? Me? Being hot on you? HA! You are not that attractive! Pfft, get over yourself, please.
  • Swapped Roles: This comic, appropriately dubbed "Switched", showcases how much Luz and Amity have changed from when Luz arrived in the Boiling Isles and when the Hexsquad got stranded on Earth.
  • The Social Darwinist: As it turns out, this is the reason Boscha tried to pit Jay against Pandora. She saw that Pandora was a powerful witch, and thought that Jay competing with her would make her strong.
  • The Swear Jar: Played straight and parodied in the same strip, as even with Eda being subject to one, Luz and Amity are also subject to one that they have to tip whenever they call each other an awesome girlfriend. The "Awesome Girlfriend" jar is overflowing compared to the swear jar.
  • Sweetheart Sipping: Alador orders a single drink with two straws for himself and Darius when they're on a date. Darius initially thinks it's too childish, but relents when Alador calls him a coward. They then realize that Amity and Luz, along with Hunter and Willow, are doing the same and watching them from other tables; with Amity visibly shocked, Hunter giving thumbs up, and Willow taking a picture.
  • Swiss-Army Appendage: Eda's hook hand she has in the epilogue is depicted as this, "Morning Lecture" having her remove the hook attachment and attaching a pointer stick for the purposes of her lecture.
    T
  • Tactful Translation: Lilith's Palisman is not pleased to see Eda after she threw it into a wall in "Agony of a Witch", and threatens her. Lilith thankfully doesn't tell Eda this.
Raven Palisman: Caaaw (You smashed me into a wall.) Caaaw (When the Palisman Revolution comes, you'll be the first to die.)
    Eda: What did he say?
Lilith: Ummm- He said he's hungry!
  • Take That!:
    • One comic takes a shot at the Taiwanese dub's infamous censorship of the Lumity scenes in canon, like the "dress up and travel together" line from "Knock, Knock, Knocking on Hooty's Door". When Luz proposes to Amity once the two are older, the context is changed via Gag Sub to Luz asking Amity if she wants to turn a ring she found on the side of the road into the lost-and-found department, and right as they're about to kiss (or as Luz puts it, take a closer look for no reason), a Disney Channel ad bumper obscures the two.
    • A particularly large, humanoid, black-furred echo mouse wearing red suspenders that is clearly meant to be Mickey Mouse is noted by Maliphas as being obsessed with fairy tales, hissing at Luz and Malphas when they get near him and scurrying off.
      • Pretty much every time the mouse shows up in one of MoringMark's comics, he is depicted in an unflattering light, with only one or two exceptions at most, being the satirical representation of Disney, who has infamously invokedscrewed over The Owl House and Dana Terrace in the past.note
    • The Collector introduces themself to Luz by establishing their goal of collecting only the most unique things in the Demon Realm they can find, but Luz offers something completely one of a kind for only 5,000 snails. Turns out, she just suckered him into buying an NFT, with the Collector failing to find the purpose of it or why it's so expensive.
    • "Do You Want Fanwars? That's How You Get Fanwars." seems to depict live-action remakes in a bad light, as Luz and Amity vent their frustrations at the live-action remake of The Good Witch Azura, which supposedly took several creative liberties from the source material. When Luz asks the others what they thought, Hunter and Willow dodge the question and before Gus can say he liked the movie, Willow stops him from talking.
    • Not Going That Route pokes fun at the Love Triangle and Will They or Won't They? tropes, as Luz terrifiedly envisions a scenario in which Willow sees Hunter with the cheerleader girl from her school, assumes they become an item, creates a misunderstanding, and by the time its settled, Willow will find someone else, and the whole situation will get dragged out for another season. The whole idea of it playing out in such a cliche manner horrifies Luz into letting out a Big "NO!".
  • "Take That!" Kiss: A variant. Seeing one of Luz's classmates bullying her, Amity kisses her girlfriend in front of her and her friends to shut her up and as proof Luz is dating her.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Gus lampshades how Luz and Amity feeling awkward around Willow and Hunter having a romantic moment is how he feels around them.
  • Team Mom: Taken literally in one comic, as Eda is seen reading a bedtime story to Katya, Amber, and Derwin as if they were her own children. Lilith tries to take advantage of this by asking Eda to do the same thing, which she begrudgingly does.
  • Tears of Joy:
  • The Tease: Vee of all beings has such a moment. When Masha states their envy that shapeshifters switch between good-looking faces, Vee takes their form, leaving them internally panicking.
  • Technically Naked Shapeshifter: Deconstructed with Vee at several points.
  • Tempting Fate: Exaggerated. Right before the Day of Unity, Luz tells King that Eda will be fine as long as she doesn't raise any death flags. Cue Eda saying this is her last mission before she retires, asks Darius to tell her the plan again, says it's going to go off without a hitch, shows the CATS her family photos, tells Luz that she's taught her everything she knows, and right before she leaves, she says What Could Possibly Go Wrong?, much to Luz's horror.
  • Terrible Pickup Lines: Luz performs these from time to time with Amity in some comics. Amity of course, finds them charming, and even buys a book from the human realm from Eda to try on Luz.
  • That Came Out Wrong:
    • When Luz is testing the capabilities of her cape's Anti-Magic properties, she asks Amity, who has just shown up at the Owl House, to attack her. Unfortunately, instead of using a magic attack, Amity hurls a book at the human's face and breaks Luz's nose. Luz ends up admitting it was her fault.
    • While on a date and sitting on a bench with Emira, Hunter proceeds to make a romantic speech to her, only to call her the blind spot of his life before correcting himself and stating that he meant bright spot. He then declared that he nailed it, but Emira's face, which had previously displayed enchantment, says otherwise.
    • When Vee and Masha are hanging out, Masha decides to give Vee the nickname "Vivi". Overjoyed, Vee tries to return the gesture by calling Masha "Mama". One awkward moment later, both decide not to use any nicknames.
    • After the Hexsquad meet Vee, she expresses confusion about why they're not afraid of her, leading to Amity saying they're friends. In giving examples of how the witches are just as dangerous as a basilisk, Hunter mentions that just because he's trained to slit peoples' throats in their sleep doesn't mean he will; this puts Vee at ease, but Amity warns Gus to sleep with his eyes open.
  • That Poor Cat: Amity makes it clear that her number one policy when dealing with cats is to squish them. She herself admits that it's probably not that comfortable for the cat or safe.
  • The Talk: Camila prepares to give Luz this in the strip named after this trope, only to be intrigued when Luz reveals to her that girl couples can have babies using magic.
  • They Just Dont Get It: In this strip, Raine calls a CATS meeting to talk about updating their name due to fighting the Collector now instead of the Coven. Darius suggests just renaming it to Witches Against The Collector and they don't have to abbreviate it to CATS. He gives up when this just gets him blank stares from the others.
  • This Is Gonna Suck:
    • In one strip, the Blights let Luz, Eda, King, Hooty, Lilith, and Hunter hide out at their manor the week before the Day of Unity while they come up with a plan to stop Belos. While Odalia is obviously unhappy with the setup, she thinks she can handle it, as it's only a week. As soon as she sees the six making themselves at home in ways that annoy her (Lilith gushes over all of the artifacts the Blights have, Eda and Owlbert steal one of Odalia's vases, Hooty makes the manor his new body, King raids the manor's fridge to make a big sandwich, Luz and Amity blush over the idea of living together, and Edric and Emira start flirting with Hunter), she realizes how hard this week will be for her.
    • Averted in another comic. Amity, under the impression that humans dress up as "horrible and evil entities" for Halloween, uses a glamour charm to dress up as Odalia, but is clearly unhappy about it. When Luz clarifies that people also tend to dress up as what they like, Amity quickly takes the chance to change into another costume.
    • Masha and Vee are taking a walk in the forest when Masha suddenly notices that Vee is gone and there's a bear standing next to them. Assuming that Vee is messing with them by shapeshifting, they playfully poke it on the nose. It's only after that point that they see Vee is actually several feet behind them taking pictures of a squirrel and the bear they just poked is both very real and very annoyed.
      Masha: Huh.
  • Those Wacky Nazis: Lilith talks about a great, and powerful leader with great ambition and a goal of purifying and purging their world of those they deemed unworthy. She then goes on to talk about Belos, revealing she was actually talking about Hitler. Steve's adoration to this description before the reveal makes him realize he's one of the bad guys.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone:
    • During a raid on the Owl House, Eda orders Hooty to take care of the Coven Scouts only for everyone to find him sleeping. Eda, Luz and King agree to let him have a break and go kick butt themselves.
    • When a little girl at a restaurant hears her parents openly insult Luz (who's in the opposite booth with Amity) because she taught Belos the light glyph, she sneaks Luz a thank you note calling her a hero for saving the Isles from that monster.
  • Tied-Together-Shoelace Trip: Amity subjects Hunter to this, knowing he'd brag about how he got her to hand over the portal key to him.
  • Time-Passes Montage: "Seed" has the Hexsquad make a grave for Flapjack, planting one of his feathers, a gravestone, and a palistrom seed, which Willow grows into a sapling. We then see the grave through the years and seasons as the sapling grows into a palistrom tree surrounding the gravestone as an adult Hunter, Willow, and Pandora admire the tree.
  • Title Drop: This appropriately named comic features three instances for Season 3.
    • When Luz asks how they knew where the Titan Blood was, Amity explains that Masha helped them figure out the rebus.
Amity: It's all- (Thanks to Them title card appears)
    • After dealing with Kikimora, Luz gives a speech about saving the Boiling Isles.
Luz: Let's save the Isles from the Collector, and create a better world- (For the Future title card appears)
    • After the Collector's surprisingly easy Heel–Face Turn, Amity finds Luz staring at her. Luz is imagining their wedding day and smiling goofily.
Amity: ...Why are you looking at me like that?
Luz: Oh, don't mind me. I'm just- (Watching and Dreaming title card appears)
  • Toilet Paper Trail: Lampshaded and defied, as Willow tries to tell Boscha she's got toilet paper stuck to her belt, but decides against it after Boscha insults her.
  • Together in Death: In the aptly named "Till Death Brings Us Together", an elderly Evelyn feels that her time has come and walks out in a snowstorm, passing away in front of the grave of her late husband. Her spirit, appearing as her younger self, is greeted by Caleb, and they walk together into the afterlife.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Eda and Lilith decide to play a game of Twister... with glyphs in place of the regular colored spots.
  • Took the Wife's Name: Jay refers to Willow as "Mrs Park" at one point, confirming that Hunter took her surname upon marriage.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: Played for Laughs when Caleb tries to convince a mob that Evelyn is a witch, with one of them questioning why another brought a torch along when it's the middle of the day.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: The comic "Test" shows that Vee's taken a liking to chips, even offering to take a history test in Luz's place if she can get the basilisk a lifetime supply of them. Since then, select comics will have Vee eating a bag of chips in some scenes.
  • Tragic Keepsake: A sort applies for Belos, as long ago when his brother was alive, an ancestor of the Clawthornes carved him a red cardinal palisman that he would name "Flapjack". Once he notices the Clawthorne family crest on Lilith's staff, Belos spares her palisman and gives it back to her, saying he's returning a favor.
  • Training Montage: Amity does one with Willow coaching her. She eventually gets strong enough to return Luz's favor in bridal carrying her when she breaks her leg in a grudgby game.
  • Transformation of the Possessed: When possessed by the Collector, Luz's skin turns yellow and blue split down the middle, her eyes turn red, her hair turns white, and she gains two star-shaped freckles under her left eye.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: "Adulthood" has Vee taking the role of adult for the Noceda house while Camila's with the Hexsquad in the Demon Realm. She believes it'll be a cakewalk but after a while, she ends up lying on the kitchen island curled up and nibbling on her tail as the sink leaks and both the toaster and a pot on the oven catches fire, leading to Masha coming over to help her.
  • Truly Single Parent: Boscha's daughter Jay is eventually revealed to be a Grimwalker. Upon learning this, Willow comments that it explains why they never saw her with another parent despite having known Boscha since childood.
  • Tsundere: Beta Amity is framed as this, angrily blushing and denying that she wants to do some very specific romantic things with Beta Luz when the latter asks her what she wants to do tonight
Beta Luz: (while writing down things that Beta Amity says that she doesn't want to do) Uh-huh. Dessert?
Beta Amity: (Beat) I absolutely hate strawberry smoothie.
