"It's becoming more and more difficult to understand who or what we're fighting for."

A Lieutenant stationed on the Archangel in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, she's forced to take command after the ZAFT attack on Heliopolis. Though uncertain of herself at first, she eventually grows to be a capable officer and a dangerous opponent to ZAFT. She manages to keep the Archangel in one piece through space, reentry, and all over Earth, eventually becoming its captain.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, initially working as an engineer (which was, after all, her original job) in Orb under the alias Maria Bernes, she answers Kira's call to action and reprises her role as the Archangel's captain once they enter the conflict.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, she works for Compass.

  • Action Girl: In SEED Destiny, she's able to outgun a squad of trained ZAFT (read: Coordinator) assassins after Lacus's head and come out unscathed, even scoring a few kills.
  • Badass Normal: She's probably the best ship commander we meet in the franchise, capable of outmaneuvering both fellow Naturals and the genetically superior Coordinators and also a genetically unmodified Natural. In SEED Destiny, she holds her own when a group of coordinators attacks Lacus's home.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Between her and Mu, in episode 38 of SEED. Based on the reactions of the crewmembers who witnessed it and the sounds she was making, it was really something. They get another passionate one at the end of SEED Freedom.
  • The Captain: Of the Archangel during the whole franchise. She gains the title following her promotion.
  • Closest Thing We Got: Murrue is highly familiar with the Archangel itself, but she's also a technical officer with zero experience of combat or command. This leads to the junior-but-more-experienced Natarle questioning a good chunk of her decisions in SEED, and not always being wrong. Despite occasionally being annoyed and unnerved, Murrue freely admits she needs Natarle's help.
  • Cool Ship: The Archangel is still pretty damn cool.
  • Crazy-Prepared: In SEED Freedom, Considering how many times the bridge has nearly been destroyed, Murrue had a escape mechanism installed in the Archangel's captain's chair, which ultimately is used when the ship finally goes down for good.
  • Custom Uniform: During the final battle of SEED Freedom, she wears a light blue pilot suit with red highlights on the shoulders.
  • Due to the Dead: In SEED Freedom, Murrue named one of the tactics "Badgiruel", after her late comrade and XO Natarle.
  • Field Promotion: She's promoted from Lieutenant to Captain of the Archangel. Later, Halberton promotes her to Lieutenant Commander in the episode "Flay's Decision" of SEED.
  • Frontline General: A variant in SEED Freedom: the Millennium has a special bridge mode which takes her and the pilot Neumann up to a special deck where Murrue can get a 360 degree view to command the ship, but it also leaves her vulnerable to attacks as the only thing that seperates her and space is a spherical window.
  • Going Down with the Ship: Defied in SEED Freedom; after making sure the rest of the bridge crew was safely evacuated, Murrue also abandons ship via an escape hatch installed within her captain's seat, seconds before a beam blast penetrates the bridge.
  • The Good Captain: Even after she's promoted to Captain of the Archangel, she acts as the Team Mom and genuinely cares for her crew.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: Twice. Her previous relationship was with a mobile armor pilot who was killed in action, and she's still left mourning Mu as of the short interquel. Eventually subverted as Mu is revealed to be still alive in SEED Destiny.
  • The Leader: Of the Archangel crew. Murrue is a capable officer and has the full respect of everyone working for her.
  • The Men First: In SEED Freedom, lets the bridge crew go to the elevator and remains in her spot when Archangel has it's engines destroyed and they have to abandon ship. Murrue doesn't go down with the ship though. It turns out the bridge had an emergency trap door for just this sort of situation that pulls the captain's chair to safety and out to the exterior deck all along which she manages to use just seconds before one of the Black Knight squad finishes the ship off.
  • The McCoy: Not one to take consideration of the problem, especially early on in SEED.
  • Instant Expert: Subverted in SEED. Despite being only a technical officer and engineer, she did a remarkably good job taking charge of the Archangel on an emergency basis, but her lack of relevant experience shows through rather quickly and results in frequent consultations with the regular-military Mu and Natarle.
  • It Has Been an Honor: With the Archangel crew whenever a time came when they would be reassigned, but they remained a team throughout SEED with a few exceptions.
  • Lady of War: She's calm, collected, feminine, and the best battleship captain in the Earth Alliance Navy, until her defection to the Three Ships Alliance.
  • Meaningful Name: She's a Shout-Out to Capt. Marko Ramius from The Hunt for Red October, a fellow defector. It's even more obvious with the Japanese pronunciation of her name – "Mar-yu".
  • Military Maverick: Though kinder and gentler than most, Murrue doesn't hesitate to trample all over military regulations as necessary in order to protect the people on her ship. This causes problems for her with her Number Two, Natarle Badgiruel in SEED.
  • A Mother to Her Men: Definitely shows her loyalty to subordinates, even dismissing Kira's Coordinator heritage and looking for Cagalli rather than leaving her as "Missing In Action" when she went missing in Phase 23 and 24 of SEED.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Andrew Waltfeld in SEED Destiny, on account of both of them having lost their loved ones.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Murrue is supremely competent in her job as the caption of the Archangel and is willing to listen to her fellow subordinates.
  • Seen It All: Unlike the other times, in SEED Freedom, she isn't shocked when the Black Knights aim their guns to destroy the bridge, doesn't panic, and just quickly presses the escape hatch.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: In episode 35 of SEED, "The Descending Sword", Mu tells Murrue of the Cyclops System and what he believes is the Earth Alliance's big plan (which, to be fair, isn't hard to see). After hearing Miriallia's breakdown, Murrue decides that if the objective was to lure ZAFT closer to JOSH-A, then mission complete, let's get out of here. It's almost downright Picard-ian.
  • Shoot the Dog: She holds Kira and his friends at gun point and drags them aboard the Archangel due to them having witnessed the Strike, thereby making them a security risk to the Alliance war effort.
  • Team Mom: As the Archangel's commanding officer, she also steps in as the surrogate mother of the partly teenage crew of her ship. This means caring for them beyond her duties as an officer.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As SEED progresses and she gains both in confidence and ability.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her locket. It's a memento of her previous boyfriend, a mobile armour pilot. In the interquel between SEED and SEED Destiny, she has both Mu and Natarle's officer cap. Subverted with Mu's cap as he is still alive.
  • You Are in Command Now: Mu pushes her into command after the Archangel's commanding officers are killed in Le Creuset's surprise attack. He could have taken the position, as he has seniority, but Murrue is more familiar with the ship and better-suited to the position, while Mu, as the only available pilot other than Kira, is better off not tied to the bridge.
  • Wrench Wench: In SEED Destiny, she returned to her original profession as an engineer and has been responsible for keeping the Freedom in good repair after it was badly damaged during the climactic Battle of Jachin Due at the end of SEED.

Arnold in SEED Freedom

Click here to see Arnold in SEED Destiny

The soft-spoken helmsman of the Archangel, Mr. Neumann is one of the unsung heroes of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Taking on a leadership role among the ship's NCO's in times of crisis, Neumann's greatest contribution to the survival of the Archangel is without a doubt his insane piloting skills.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, Arnold returns now working under Compass, still the helmsman of the Archangel.

  • Ace Pilot: A pretty understated example, but he's the best helmsman of the Cosmic Era, Natural or Coordinator. Best shown in SEED Freedom, although his skills tragically aren't enough to save the Archangel this time. In the finale, he even dons a pilot suit and rides with Murrue in the uppermost level of Millenium's bridge flying the whole ship like a giant space fighter.
  • Ascended Extra: To a degree as while the rest of the ship's regular crew characters fade into the background as their spots are taken up by Kira's friends with many of them outright disappearing entirely in SEED Destiny, Neumann as the helmsman of the Archangel remains in a prominant position on the bridge for the entirety of SEED and in SEED Destiny and continues having lines of dialogue even if most of it is just confirming Murrue's helm orders or reporting damage to the ship. It probably helped that Tolle, the member of Kira's friend group that was assigned to assist him as the co helmsman is eventually killed leaving Neumann alone at the helm from then on. He's also one of the highest ranked officers on the ship past a certain point, so whenever Murrue is called to a meeting Neumann is often one of the officers who accompanies her.
  • Custom Uniform: During the final battle of SEED Freedom, he wears a yellow pilot suit with gray highlights.
  • Do a Barrel Roll: Neumann has pulled off some pretty sick maneuvers with the Archangel, but arguably his crowning moment was when he pulled off an actual barrel roll with the hulking vessel. Under gravity. This move later becomes instrumental in the Archangel's victory over the Minerva in the final battle of SEED Destiny.
  • Field Promotion: From Chief Petty Officer to Ensign in SEED.
  • Hidden Depths: Neumann keeps to himself and rarely speaks, but when the Archangel is in lockdown aboard Artemis, he's the one who rallies the crew and organizes the breakout. Supplementary materials suggest that he may have had a crush on Natarle Badgiruel as well.
  • Improbable Piloting Skills: Good Lord yes! This man flies a several thousand tonne battleship as though it were a freaking fighter plane. Doing a barrel roll to point the ship's guns down or circumvent an enemy battleship? No problem. Recovering from a botched atmospheric re-entry? Not even worth a mention. Dodging beams and guided missiles alike between the time they are fired and the time they reach his ship (many times maneuvering so quickly it looks like the crew would surely be turned to red paste against the walls)? All in a day's work.
  • Love Hurts: In some of the video games based on SEED it is revealed that Neumann had a thing for the Archangel's Number Two, Lt. Badgiruel. This means that he had to help kill her when Ramius ordered the Dominion sunk. Ouch.
  • The Quiet One: He mostly keeps to himself.
  • The Stoic: He's the straight man to the more colorful personalities helming the Archangel. This quality is even noted on his official character profile.

The chief mechanic of the Archangel.
  • The Engineer: He's primarily responsible with coordinating maintenance and repairs to the mobile suits and mobile armors aboard the Archangel.
  • Team Dad: Shares this role along with Mu (whose more of a Big Brother Mentor), taking an unofficial parental role to Kira and his friends after they join with the Archangel's staff crew.

    Dalida Lolaha Chandra II

Chandra in SEED Freedom

A communications operator who served aboard the Archangel since the 1st Alliance-PLANT War.
  • Communications Officer: The communication officer of the Archangel in SEED and SEED Destiny.
  • The Bus Came Back: Once the Archangel leaves the Alliance and joins Orb Chandra fades into the background as the ship consolodates it's remaining crew and he's removed from the bridge while Sai takes his position. Sai does not appear in Destiny however so when the Archangel returns Chandra takes back his spot as communication and radar officer and remains there for the rest of the show and into the movie.

"I'm the man who makes the impossible possible."

One of the few mobile armour pilots to survive the war long enough to appear in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, he's also lucky (and good) enough to survive the initial ZAFT attack on Heliopolis. Surprisingly laid back for a guy who's been on the brink of a messy death for months at a time, he provides much needed advice and experience for the Archangel's rookie crew. Provides support for Kira and Murrue most specifically — he outranks them both, but having no experience as a ship's officer and being unable to pilot the Strike, he prefers to leave the lead roles to them. Has a rivalry with ZAFT commander Rau Le Creuset, which predates the beginning of the series.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, he returns as Neo Roanoke Lord Djibril's mysterious, masked right-hand man and Phantom Pain's field leader. Neo and his team are the major antagonists for the first half of the series. Though a skilled pilot himself, he mostly acts as commanding officer. Quite the Manipulative Bastard, he generally uses his abilities in that field to keep his subordinates as stable and sane as possible.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, after regaining his memories near the end of the Second Bloody Valentine War, he now works for Compass alongside his partner Murrue, now as his true self once again.

  • Abusive Parents: Al Da Flaga was an asshole, all right, and his mother seems to have been a relative non-entity.
  • Ace Custom: His purple-colored Exus mobile armor and Windam mobile suit in SEED Destiny when he was Neo.
  • Ace Pilot: He was already "The Hawk of Endymion" when he survived the battle that wiped out the rest of his squad. Mu is both skilled and known to quite a few people. As Neo in SEED Destiny, he continues to do so, regularly taking on the likes of Shinn and Rey in vastly inferior mecha.
  • Alertness Blink:
    • In SEED, experiences a Newtype Flash whenever Rau Le Creuset is within a few kilometers. It's one of the few things that point to their having newtype-like abilities.
    • In SEED Destiny, between him (as Neo) and Rey. This foreshadows that Neo is actually an amnesic Mu, and Rey is another clone of Mu's father.
    • In SEED Freedom, his original "not quite a Newtype" psychic sense saves his life when he and two of the Harken squad attempt to save the crippled Archangel but are intercepted by the Black Knight squad, as it warns him just in time to only lose his Murasame's head while poor Mars and Herbert bite it.
  • All Your Powers Combined: As of the HD Remaster of SEED, he's the first (chronologically anyway) to use a 'Combined' Striker Pack (the Perfect Strike).
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: When he was Neo, meeting Murrue in SEED Destiny touches off a bad case of it.
  • Archenemy: Serves as one for ZAFT Ace Pilot Rau Le Creuset in SEED, his genetic dad.
  • Attack Reflector: The Akatsuki. Though now to exaggerated levels in SEED Freedom — it's capable of completely canceling out the Requiem laser. The novel reveals that the sheer power of Requiem managed to peel off and evaporate a large amount of its armor.
  • Badass Normal: Made even more badass by his status as a Natural in a series where most of the awesome is reserved for Coordinators. Occasional implications throughout the series that he has Newtype abilities may mean he's a subversion, but it's never entirely clear what the extent of those abilities are beyond his instinctive awareness of Le Creuset's presence, and being one of only a handful of pilots between the anime and the Astray who can use Mobile Suits/Armors with Attack Drones unassisted. Mu is also the only Natural to be a Mobile Suit pilot in Compass and one of the few survivors too. All in all, Mu is probably the best Natural pilot in the series.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Between him and Murrue, in episode 38 of SEED. Based on the reactions of the crewmembers who witnessed it, it was really something. They get another passionate one at the end of SEED Freedom.
  • Big Brother Mentor:
    • Serves as Kira's in SEED, providing him with advice and support during the series.
    • He still projects this aura as Neo in SEED Destiny. This is a bad thing for people who might like to be objective about things like, oh, trusting him.
  • Bigger Stick: Cagalli's Akatsuki which she lends him at the end of SEED Destiny. It's packing in a shiny gold Anti-Beam coating to reflect any beam gunfire, especially against the Minerva's Tannhäuser cannon, seven DRAGOON beam turrets on its Shiranui Space Pack and a better gun and a shield which make this machine leagues better than his Windam.
  • Bling-Bling-BANG!: The shiny gold Akatsuki which Cagalli lend him after his Heel–Face Turn in SEED Destiny. The characters actually have to avert their eyes! He gets to pilot the Akatsuki again in the last act of SEED Freedom.
  • Book Dumb: Played for Laughs. When Kira was court martialed for returning Lacus to ZAFT with Murrue as the judge and Natarle as the prosecutor, Mu acted as the defending "lawyer" for Kira. Unfortunately for Kira, Natarle has remembered every single clause and rule in the book. Mu barely knew any of the rules and was forced to bring the book with him, flipping through each page while the defenses he came up on the spot were definitely more funny than helpful. Even as a bad "lawyer", Mu still managed to make the impossible possible by winning the court case albeit because Kira is a civilian rather than a soldier and is not under military law.
Mu, trying to justify why Kira was against using Lacus as a hostage: Right! If anything, you'd want her for a girlfriend!
  • Broken Ace: A milder version than some, but his affable behavior conceals quite a bit of mental and emotional damage, which he willingly acknowledges. It is present in both his personas.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: One of the most laid-back and goofy characters in SEED, but still extremely competent at what he does.
  • Cain and Abel: He has a lot of violent conflict with Rau Le Creuset in SEED, his father's clone.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: In line with the SEED Destiny's theme of repetition, immediately after re-joining the Archangel, Neo slides right back into his usual behaviour of hitting on Murrue, and his remarks may have reached new levels of flirtiness, like outright asking her to bathe with him. Mind you, this happens long before he regains his full memory as Mu.
  • Can't Catch Up: Faces this technologically throughout SEED, Destiny and even Freedom. None of these stop Mu from dominating the battlefield when he can but this is played straight either way.
    • SEED is where Mu faces this the most. Got an Ace Custom machine only he and a handful of others can use? Too bad he has to fight Mobile Suits that his machine can barely defeat. Got a brand new fighter plane with beam weaponry? He has to fight against hordes of aerial Mobile Suits. Finally get the Strike Gundam? It is now outdated and has to fight even stronger Gundams with better weaponry.
    • Destiny slightly subverts this as the Exus has AttackDrones with beam weaponry. This gets played straight once he lands on Earth and uses an Ace Custom Windam whose performance is considered comparable to the Strike Gundam, an outdated unit. The Akatsuki averts this trope despite being chronologically the oldest Gundam used in Destiny's final battle. Its offensive abilities may not be too special anymore as similar AttackDrones exist with the upgraded DRAGOON system, but few units use it in the first place and its defensive abilities makes it shine a lot more compared to even the newest Gundams at the time.
    • Freedom has Mu forced to use a Murasame Kai which is a Fragile Speedster compared to the other Compass units like the GYAN Strom and GELGOOG Menace. The Akatsuki returns for Mu's use and again zigzags the trope. It is chronologically the oldest Compass unit directly used on the battlefield with no known upgrades aside from the Zeus Silhouette (which is technically the Destiny's weapon) and never fights the Black Knights. However, its capabilities were more than enough for its designated role in the strategy implemented.
  • The Captain: For Phantom Pain and the Girty Lue as Neo.
  • Character Catchphrase: Of the Badass Boast variety on both personas. "I am a man who can make the impossible possible!"
  • Char Clone: Based off of Char's "Quattro Bageena" persona as a Big Brother Mentor and Ace Pilot. The same can be said for Neo: blonde, masked enigmatic Ace Pilot who is also The Dragon and The Rival ? Yep, he's a Char. Also, ever noticed how much he resembles Rau Le Creuset ?
  • The Charmer: Big time. Good-looking, easygoing, very, very affable, and good at getting people to like him, and it comes in handy. He periodically tends to say or do something inappropriate, shallow, or even annoying, and suffers nothing other than the most temporary annoyance for it.
  • Coming in Hot: Mu does this several times, with the Mobius Zero and the Skygrasper in SEED. He's in the middle of doing it with the Strike when he intercepts Azrael's parting shot at the end of SEED.
  • Commanding Coolness: Literal. Mu is later promoted to Lieutenant Commander in SEED and still remains one of the most relaxed officers.
  • The Confidant: In SEED, he's the one Murrue often consults with about their various situations (e.g. being stranded in enemy territory and consorting with neutral factions) as well as the one she usually confides to on matters like crew morale and stress of being in command. They eventually get a Relationship Upgrade.
  • Cool Mask: Got one as Neo to cover up some extensive scarring on his face.
  • Cool Plane: When the Archangel moves to Earth in SEED, he switches to a Skygrasper fighter, which is compatible with the Strike Gundam's Striker Packs. And he does it again as Neo during his Heel–Face Turn in SEED Destiny.
  • Cool Ship: As Neo, he commands the first-of-its-kind Girty Lue assault carrier, which is essentially an Archangel-class battleship with the Lohengrin removed in favor of a Mirage Colloid system, a stealth propulsion engine, and a hanger room for an entire strike force of mobile suits.
  • Covered with Scars: As Neo, his face and torso are coated in scar tissue.
  • Criminal Amnesiac: Courtesy of Djibril, as Neo Roanoke.
  • Custom Uniform: Both as Mu in SEED Neo Roanoke in SEED Destiny
    • Mu wears a purple pilot suit in SEED, something that is not seen among pilots of his rank.
    • His all-black Earth Alliance uniform as Neo and helmet cause Neo to cut a very noticeable figure.
    • He later wears a variant of Orb's pilot suits that trades the gray, black, and pale green color scheme for one that's black, purple, and light gray. The helmet also has feathers on it.
    • His Compass pilot suit is purple with red highlights, and the helmet has wings on it.
  • The Cynic: Neo is fully aware of the kind of people he is working for and the sort of war he is fighting. He also believes there's nothing he can do about it.
  • Death from Above: Delivered in his Windam in SEED Destiny. Generally, Neo and Sting provided the Earth Forces with air support.
  • The Dragon: To Djibril in SEED Destiny, leading both the Navy and Phantom Pain for him. Overlaps with Hypercompetent Sidekick as he, and not his boss, is the reason for most of the Earth Forces' military successes.
  • Drone Deployer:
    • In SEED, the Moebius Zero has four wire-controlled gun pods.
    • In SEED Destiny, his TS-MA4F Exus mobile armor features four of them. So does the Akatsuki when equipped with the Shiranui DRAGOON pack.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: At the end of SEED, he meets his end blocking an anti-matter cannon aimed at the Archangel's bridge while invoking his catchphrase one more time. Subverted as it is revealed that he survives in SEED Destiny.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Played for Drama in SEED. Yes, Mu, it makes sense to assume the unstable guy who hates your guts for some reason is lying through his teeth to you. Unfortunately, he's not!
  • Enemy Mine: As Neo in SEED Destiny. How he portrays his initial alliance with the Archangel.
  • Evil Mentor: To the Extended as Neo, such as when he coaxes Stella to get on the Destroy Gundam to fight and destroy all the "scary things". He also tells Sting Stella's a better match when the latter asks why he wasn't chosen.
  • Exact Words: In SEED Destiny, Shinn returned Stella to his custody on the sole condition Neo remove her to some safe place far from war. Neo said "...I promise." He didn't say "I'll do it."
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In SEED Freedom, Mu's hair is cut shorter than it had been in SEED Destiny but still slightly longer than it had appeared in SEED.
  • A Father to His Men: Especially to Kira in SEED, but play as kind-figure to the younger crews.
  • Failure Hero: He tries to stop Le Creuset throughout the entire series, but never manages to be much more than a speed bump to him. Early on he at least makes Rau work for it, but by the end it's a total Curb-Stomp Battle that sends Mu fleeing back to the Archangel.
  • Fake Memories: In SEED Destiny, it's heavily implied that Djibril had false memories of always being Neo planted in Mu's head, effectively creating a separate persona.
  • Field Promotion: Along with Murrue, Mu is promoted from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander in the episode "Flay's Decision" of SEED.
  • Fragile Speedster: The Jet Striker on his Windam is said to have been set to "Full Boost". Shinn even lampshades that he was faster than the average Jet Windam.
  • Glass Cannon: The GAT-04 Windam, which blows up with alarming frequency, but is fast, and has a beam rifle, which lets it one hit KO anything that isn't a Gundam. Neo, being Neo, simply expects to not get hit.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Neo proves to have extensive scarring all over his body, including his face. Despite being covered up with a mask, however, it's non-disfiguring.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In SEED Destiny, after his memories as Mu start coming back to him, Neo decides to stick around the Archangel in order to find out who he really is.
  • He's Back!: At the end of SEED Destiny, Neo finally regains his memories as Mu after recreating his own Taking The Antimatter Beam Heroic Sacrifice, only this time in a mobile suit (Cagalli's Akatsuki) that can handle it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During the final battle, Mu takes a shot from the Dominion's Lohengrin antimatter cannon intended for the Archangel. Subverted as he survives.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: To Djibril in SEED Destiny. Not a case of Dragon-in-Chief though, as Djibril is very much in charge (and is by far the more evil of the two of them).
  • Ignored Epiphany: In SEED Destiny, Neo is fully aware that he's an incredibly bad person. He also thinks he's gone too far to turn back now. Being captured by the Archangel and a bad case of Amnesiac Dissonance help shake him out of this.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In Episode 18 of SEED, Mu casually dismisses the burning of the village of Tassil as "minor" (since none of the villagers or soldiers were killed). While he isn't exactly wrong, he fails to consider that the survivors of a sudden and horrific attack might not see it as "minor", or their enemy Andrew Waltfeld being generous. This earns him Cagalli's outrage, as well as an angry stare from the townsfolk, and an embarassed one from Badgiruel.
  • Invisibility Cloak: The Girty Lue carries both the Mirage Colloid system, which allows it to achieve radar and line-of-sight invisibility, and a stealth propulsion system that uses pressurised jets of gas to avoid detection by thermal sensors.
  • Irony: The man brainwashing the Extended is himself a brainwashing victim.
  • I've Come Too Far: Neo crossed his personal Moral Event Horizon when he first started working with the Extended in SEED Destiny. He doesn't feel like there is any going back now.
  • Just Following Orders: Neo has a bad, bad case of this. As generally the case with this, not only is he very much working for and enabling the bad guys, innocent people die because of it.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Unlike Djibril, Neo knows when to cut his losses. He retreats from any battle or personal engagement once he becomes aware that it's untenable, and he has nothing to gain.
  • Lightning Bruiser:
    • The Perfect Strike is shown to be this in Episodes 36-38 of SEED when it destroys dozens of Earth Alliance units.
    • Cagalli lends him her Akatsuki which is fast, well-armed, and impervious to ranged beam weaponry.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: His childhood had him get rejected by his father who went on to try to clone himself for his next son.
  • Loophole Abuse: After his....bold declaration of his interest in her, Murrue says she doesn't date mobile armor pilots. With his typical cockiness, he claims he is a mobile suit pilot note . It's clearly a joke on both sides because they kiss again immediately afterward, and longer this time.
  • The Kirk: To Murrue's McCoy. He's an experienced soldier who is at home with military regulations, but also understands that there are situations in which one has to look past regulations and make a more practical call. He tends to be the pragmatic midpoint between Murrue's idealism and Natarle's meticulous adherence to protocol, though overall he leans more toward Murrue's side.
  • Ma'am Shock: In SEED Freedom, he feels offended when Shinn addresses him as "old man".
  • Manipulative Bastard: Neo controls the Extended by playing off of their worst fears, and promises Shinn he'll keep Stella away from the battlefield, before putting her in the Destroy. Worst part is that this may actually have been best for everyone involved.
  • Meaningful Name: Roanoke might get his name from The Lost Colony of Roanoke, an English colony whose inhabitants mysteriously vanished. Given that he's actually Mu La Flaga, a soldier who was lost in battle.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade:
    • Both inverted and Played Straight in SEED. When the Archangel touches down on Earth, he is no longer able to use his Moebius Zero due to the fact that it is a Space Fighter and won't work in atmosphere, so he settles for a Sky Grasper fighter jet instead, which is a capable craft but lacks the Attack Drone capability of the Moebius. The trope is played straight later on, when after abandoning the Earth Alliance, he gets to pilot the Strike Gundam.
    • Averted in SEED Freedom, as Mu has swapped out the powerful and beam proof Akatsuki for what seems to be the newest variant of Orb's Murasame line, a mass produced mobile suit which does him no favors when Foundation's mobile suits turn on him. Presumably he had to return the Akatsuki to Orb as it was their Representative's personal mobile suit intended to be used specifically for the defense of Orb's mainland and not something Compass could take for regular use. Cagalli later re-lends him the Akatsuki, complete with the Zeus Silhouette for a secret mission involving the Requiem.
  • Mildly Military: Despite being the senior officer present for most of the beginning of SEED, Mu's not really one for standing on ceremony.
  • Nice Guy: As Mu. An affable man who despite having a broken childhood, shows nothing but care towards his comrades.
  • The Nicknamer: Not even specific ones, yet Mu prefers this. He calls Kira "kid" and both Cagalli and Miriallia "girl", or "missy". Cagalli snaps back at him about this, reminding him that she has a name, but he doesn't really listen. He also refers to an enemy target as a "kitty-cat", surprising her.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: When not exercising decorum in SEED Freedom, Mu again like to keep his sleeves rolled up and like Shinn, keeps his uniform's jacket partially open.
  • Not Quite Dead: Loses his memories in the process and is captured (and brainwashed) by the Earth Alliance in SEED Destiny.
  • Not Too Dead to Save the Day: The Strike was already heavily damaged but still came through at the end of SEED.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mu has a big one in SEED Freedom when he realizes that the Foundation plans on betraying their alliance and nuking a city as part of their plans.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: Gets shot by Le Creuset at the end of SEED and keeps chasing him.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Neo is an absoultely lethal pilot, but his use of first a mobile armor and then a Windam can cause this to be overlooked. Come Heel–Face Turn he upgrades to the Akatsuki, and for the first time in series has a top model Gundam. Slaughter ensues. This mirrors Rau Le Creuset from the previous series somewhat, as both upgrade their Mobile Suits at the very end of the series, and until then have had to make do with run-of-the-mill ones. There's even a scene in episode 49 of SEED Destiny that mirrors Rau when he first emerges on the battlefield in the Providence.
  • Parental Abandonment: His father disowned him when he was a child, locked him in a Big Fancy House and had himself cloned in order to create a more satisfactory son. Then both his parents died in a fire.
  • Pet the Dog: Neo is the only person other than Shinn to express any concern for the Extended, or even treat them like human beings. Whether this is genuine, or an attempt to manipulate them (or both) is really left open.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Neo has no interest in pointless destruction. It's not efficent.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Mu wears a purple pilot suit and is one of the most skilled pilots in SEED.
  • Psychic Powers: While it's never given any real focus, he's essentially the closest thing the Cosmic Era has to a Newtype. What this means within the setting is not entirely clear, but it does make him able to sense when Rau Le Creuset is nearby, and vice versa.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Neo wears a black Earth Alliance uniform, but flies a modified magenta Windam. His Exus mobile armor was also purple-pink.
  • Redemption Earns Life: Coming over to the Archangel spares Neo from being killed with his superiors and subordinates and likely from the war crimes trials that would have ensued after the war.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Played with when the Archangel arrives in Alaska in SEED and Mu receives a reassignment that will have him teaching pilot candidates instead of fighting on the front lines - ostensibly. We never find out if this was going to be his real assignment or was simply an excuse to have him leave JOSH-A before the Cyclops system is activated, since he abandons his orders and goes back to the Archangel.
  • Red Baron: The Hawk of Endymion.
  • The Rival: As Neo to Rey, mainly at the beginning of SEED Destiny.
  • Seen It All: In SEED Freedom, Mu is unfazed getting shot at by the Requiem, as this time it's actually part of the plan and not him guarding a ship, and even lampshades it.
  • Scars Are Forever: In SEED Freedom, although it's been shown that you can have one fixed (like Yzak earlier), Mu has not opted to.
  • Sole Survivor: Of his Mobius Zero squadron during the Endymion lunar campaign during his backstory, and of the Earth Alliance pilots during the attack on Heliopolis — though neither really affects his personality much.
  • Space Fighter:
    • His Moebius Zero is a space-use fighter plane with wired gun pods.
    • The TS-MA4F Exus. An upgraded version of the Mobius Zero from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, it's armed with wire-guided gunpods, missile launchers, and a heavy-machinegun. He's able to successfully outmaneuver Shinn and Rey (at the same time!) with it.
    • Downplayed with the Akatsuki. It has a dedicated space pack that uses AttackDrones as those only work in space in the Cosmic Era. The Akatsuki also has a dedicated atmospheric combat pack which replaces the AttackDrones with a flight-pack similar to the Justice Gundam.
  • Super Prototype: The Mobius Zero, which is vastly superior to the mass production Mobius in terms of armament and speed. Justified in that only a very few pilots had the level of skill and spatial awareness required to operate the Zero and its Attack Drones effectively.
  • Super-Reflexes: His enhanced spatial awareness, an extremely rare ability among both Naturals and Coordinators, which allows him to control Attack Drones.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: A poignant scene towards the end of SEED has Mu sympathizing with Rau le Creuset in a conversation with Murrue; Mu is the only character who seems to fully consider what effect his past had on him. He does, however, state firmly that what he's doing can't be excused.
  • Taking the Bullet: At the end of SEED, the fact that it doesn't just go straight through him and hit its target anyway is thanks to Mu's raw badassery.
  • Team Dad:
    • He shares this role with Murdoch in SEED as he helps the Heliopolis students adjust to being on the Archangel and being a part of the chain of command.
    • Sinister version as Neo in SEED Destiny. Stella sees him as a Parental Substitute, and he certainly plays the Reasonable Authority Figure to all three Extended, but it's equal parts sympathy and just keeping them under control.
  • Tempting Fate: "I'll be right back, with victory in hand." His mobile suit is vaporized, and Murrue doesn't see him again until SEED Destiny.
  • The Un-Favorite: To his father, Al. Oddly for the trope, there is no favorite; Mu was an only child, but his Narcissist father felt he was "a fool" and didn't resemble him enough, despite still being a toddler. So Al cloned himself. And treated the clone like crap as well.
  • Walking Spoiler: Neo's role in the latter half of SEED Destiny not only spoils the Perspective Flip, but most importantly, his Dramatic Unmask changes a major event in SEED's Final Battle (especially for those who didn't watch its compilation movies).
  • Zen Survivor: As Neo, right down to the cryptic behavior, cynical mentoring, and lack of giving a damn.

Miriallia in SEED Destiny

Click here to see Miriallia in SEED

One of Kira's friends from Heliopolis. Dates Tolle and serves in charge of communications on the Archangel in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Probably the most level-headed of the press-ganged civilians.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, she's a photojournalist covering the war when we first see her, but she ends up back on the Archangel after running into her old crewmates again.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Tolle calls her "Miri".
  • Beta Couple: With Tolle in SEED. They're the much more stable and sane foil to the Sai/Flay/Kira drama.
  • Break the Cutie: The death of Tolle hits her hard, on top of the double whammy of Kira's supposed death after his fated dual against Athrun in SEED.
  • Bridge Bunnies: In SEED Freedom, she and Sai both join Chandra in Cavalier Aifrid Unit-02 to support Cagalli in the final battle.
  • Communications Officer: She works on the bridge of the Archangel, CIC specifically, as the controller for the ship's pilots, launches, and mobile weapons.
  • Custom Uniform: OMNI just happens to have colored miniskirts and thigh-highs around for its teenage female draftees. Miri's isn't quite in Custom Uniform of Sexy territory like Ms. Fanservice Flay, though.
  • Demoted to Extra: In SEED Destiny. Although she was with Kira and Cagalli during their secret meeting with Athrun. In SEED Freedom, Miriallia only appears in a short scene with Cagalli, alongside Sai.
  • Forgiveness: She forgives Athrun for his role in Tolle's death in SEED.
  • Freak Out: After Tolle's death, though she recovers eventually.
  • The Heart: Plays peacemaker to the rest of the Bridge Bunnies in SEED, and provides emotional support for everyone she can.
  • Lethal Chef: According to the GBA Game Tomo to Kimi to Koko de, Miriallia is this. When going to eat on a date with her, Tolle always chose to go to a restaurant for this reason.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After she tries stabbing Dearka in SEED because his words drove her fully into a Freak Out, she snaps out of it when Sai stops her. Which then allows her to see what she was about to become when Flay tries killing Dearka herself mere moments later. She spends the next episode in guilt over it before she and Dearka talk at the end.
  • Mythology Gag: Her post-war profession in SEED Destiny and the nature of her reintroduction is rather reminiscent of Kai Shiden in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
  • Nice Girl: Probably one of the nicest, which makes her Freak Out above even more scary.
  • Offscreen Breakup: With Dearka, before SEED Destiny began.
  • Team Mom: To her friend circle in SEED. In contrast to three of her friends’ difficult love triangle, she had a stable and normal one with Tolle until his death.
  • Ship Tease: One interpretation of her relationship with Dearka in SEED, post Freak Out. They eventually patch up but they broke up before SEED Destiny.
  • Ship Sinking: When she returns to the Archangel in SEED Destiny, chief mechanic Murdoch asks what happened to Dearka; she responds "I dumped him." Unlike countless instances of this trope, however, fans were happy to a degree since it confirms that they were a couple, even if that's no longer the case.

Affiliation: Earth Alliance (SEED) → Three Ships Alliance & Orb Union (SEED, SEED Freedom)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sai_seed.png

A friend of Kira's and Flay's boyfriend. He seems to be the unofficial leader of Kira's social clique — he's the cool, confident guy with the hot girlfriend. Between Flay's issues and Kira's rising importance, this is slowly Deconstructed over the first half of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, though Sai's resilient enough to bounce back from it. During the second half of the series, he reprises his leadership role, acting as the unofficial first-among-equals for the bridge crewmen.

  • Above the Influence: After Kira's apparent death in SEED, Flay tries to rebound back with him, but Sai maturely turns her down and even tells Flay to stop acting like she never really cared for Kira.
  • Bridge Bunnies: He works on the bridge of the Archangel in various positions in SEED, usually on CIC with Miriallia. In SEED Freedom, he and Miriallia both join Chandra in Cavalier Aifrid Unit-02 to support Cagalli in the final battle.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: He has a phase where he tries to be as special as Kira by piloting the Strike.
  • The Lancer: Among Kira's group of friends in SEED. Kira is seen relying on him the most.
  • Love Hurts: His "romance" with Flay doesn't do anything for him.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Soon after Flay dumps him, he attempts to steal the Strike. Being a Natural trying to pilot a machine tuned by and for a Coordinator, he can't even leave the hanger before the Strike topples over from his inability to properly use it.
  • Mission Control: He typically works with Miriallia in CIC.
  • Nice Guy: Even after Kira attacks him, Sai quickly gets over resenting him and tells him he's counting on him.
  • Non-Action Guy: Sai's not a fighter.
  • Put on a Bus: Sai is briefly seen in flashbacks throughout SEED Destiny but he never appears in the show. He returns in SEED Freedom, albeit having a short screen time alongside Miriallia in a scene with Cagalli, both having joined the Orb Military.
  • The Resenter: Briefly has an intense dislike Kira due to Kira's greater ability. He gets over it fast.
  • Romantic False Lead: A more sympathetic one than usual. He was engaged to Flay, who Kira also has feelings for, then Flay starts seducing Kira as part of her desire to have him fight until he dies. This results in Sai getting dumped, and Kira grabs the Jerkass Ball because of Flay's manipulation and attacks Sai to cement that he has no chance with her.
  • The Smart Guy: Although they were all attending technical college, Sai is the most candidly studious of Kira's social circle. He adjusts the quickest to his role on the Archangel's bridge and spending his off-duty time reading and studying. After the war, Sai appears to have been the only one of his friends to have resumed his technical career.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He's the most bookish of Kira's friends though rather than traditional Nerd Glasses, Sai wears Cool Shades, which may be prescription as he wears them even at night.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Following Kira's apparent death, Sai takes command of the bridge crew, tells Flay exactly where she can stick her issues, prevents she and Miriallia from killing Dearka, and essentially becomes one of the most important people on board the Archangel, all without ever changing his rank or official job.
  • The Voiceless: In SEED Freedom, unlike Miriallia, Sai has no lines in the movie.

    Tolle Koenig

Affiliation: Earth Alliance (SEED)

Main mecha: FX-550 Skygrasper

Voiced by: Takayuki Inoue (Japanese); Richard Ian Cox [Ocean dub], Colin DePaula [NYAV Post dub] (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tolle_seed.png

One of Kira's friends. Dates Miriallia and looks up to Kira in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. The one to come up with the idea to join the Archangel's crew, he's always looking to make himself useful. One of the Bridge Bunnies at first, he eventually spends enough time in the simulator to graduate to Skygrasper pilot, and begins to help Kira and Mu in battle.

  • Beta Couple: With Miriallia who he's been dating since before SEED started.
  • The Big Guy: Plays this role to Kira early in the series. Promptly evolves into The Lancer for a bit.
  • Bridge Bunnies: He's initially another member of the bridge crew. He primarily worked with Neumann on navigation.
  • Cool Plane: He becomes the pilot of the Archangel's second Skygrasper after Cagalli disembarks in SEED.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Once Tolle is killed in SEED, Kira finally begins to fight Athrun with killing intent.
  • Good Counterpart: To Nicol (who admittedly isn't villainous by any stretch); both are loyal friends that provide much needed moral comfort — Nicol reminds Athrun of the peace they strive to fight for while Tolle joins Kira in battle on the bridge and later as the pilot of the second Skygrasper, helping Kira see that he and the rest of his friends are truly with him. And just like Nicol, both meet their respective ends through dismemberment.
  • Hot-Blooded: Tolle is certainly the most enthusiastic of the Heliopolis crew, and constantly pushes to improve himself. Over the course of SEED, he goes from refugee, to bridge crew, to combat pilot!
  • Ironic Name: Amuro Ray's voice actor is ''Tohru'' Furuya. Koenig means "king" in German, like "Rey" does in Spanish. Tolle is a very loyal friend to Kira and tries to be a hero and gets Killed Off for Real, very gorily and dramatically, and thanks to flashbacks, repeatedly. It's a pretty effective Stealth Insult.
  • Nice Guy: Perhaps the friendliest member of Kira's peer group in SEED, and the one who most readily rushes to the defense of the others.
  • Off with His Head!: The Aegis's shield decapitates poor Tolle as it hits the cockpit. Yikes.
  • Oh, Crap!: When he sees the Aegis's shield flying right at him...
  • Sacrificial Lion: His death, along with Nicol's, happens during a major turning point in SEED. It directly leads to several major characters (e.g. Kira, Athrun, Miriallia and Dearka) reevaluating their stances on the ongoing conflict.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He becomes the pilot of the second Skygrasper.

    Kuzzey Buskirk

Affiliation: Earth Alliance (SEED) → Unaffiliated

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kuzzey_seed.png

One of Kira's friends in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, he's something of a minor character compared to the rest of the Heliopolis crew. He's the most average of the clique, lacking any outstanding quality comparable to Sai's confidence, Miriallia's warmth, or Tolle's determination.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Receives more attention in the Freedom novelization where it briefly covers his point of view when the Foundation declares the revival of the Destiny Plan rather than being a voiceless cameo in the movie.
  • Bridge Bunnies: He joins his friends as a part of the Archangel's bridge crew.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Flay badgers him about what happened to Kira after he's declared MIA, Kuzzey irritably tries to be as technical as possible. When Flay still doesn't get the hint, he bluntly tells her it means Kira is likely dead, and then sharply tells her to leave him alone.
  • Communications Officer: His primary role on the bridge in SEED.
  • The Everyman: His main role in the series is "the average guy" — his response to things like The Reveal that Kira's a Coordinator stand in for the "normal" reaction. He's not as supportive of Kira as the others and is quite a bit more openly fearful and self-interested. This trait continues in the novelization of SEED Freedom, where there is a brief segment narrated from his point-of-view meant to illustrate how most people are reacting to the new events. He initially believes the world should just surrender to the Foundation, not because he agrees with the Destiny Plan but simply because he is afraid for his life. However, upon further thinking, he concludes a world ruled by genetic determinism would not be kind to an Everyman like him, so he decides to believe Cagalli's words when she makes a public announcement.
  • The Generic Guy: He knows that nothing about him stands out.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Sees himself as useless.
  • The Load: He considers himself this, though no one else seems to. He pulls his weight on the Archangel, at least.
  • Nice Guy: Not as open as Kira, Tolle, or Sai, and a bit more self-interested because of his cowardice, but he's one.
  • Non-Action Guy: As a member of the bridge crew.
  • Opt Out: He eventually accepts that he just isn't cut out for war and leaves the Archangel after their return to Orb in SEED.
  • Put on a Bus: Leaves the Archangel before the Battle of Orb and is never seen again.
  • The Quiet One: The least outspoken of Kira's social group.
  • Satellite Character: Has the least development out of Kira's friends and never gets any scenes to himself in SEED.
  • Space People: Kuzzey is the only one born on Heliopolis and definitely not used to life on Earth.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Only apparent in the Freedom novelization as it covers his point of view there. Kuzzey initially believes it would be best for the world to surrender to the Foundation out of convenience and fear until Cagalli made her announcement as chief representative of Orb. His first impressions of her was a rough-mannered and noisy troublemaker but when he sees how far she has come with leading Orb, Kuzzy believes for the best that the people should follow her lead.

"At what point do we put an end to [war]? When every single one of your enemies has been destroyed? Perhaps then."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andrew_waltfeld_55.png

Click here to see Andrew in SEED

Known as "the Desert Tiger", Waltfeld is a feared ZAFT commander operating in the Libyan desert in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. He serves as the first major opponent Kira faces other than Athrun and his team, and poses a serious threat to the Archangel and her crew, despite being a pretty decent guy. Meeting him forces Kira to further reevaluate his moral stance on the war.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, Andrew has defected from ZAFT and lived in the Orb Union alonside Murrue Ramius. He still has the scars from his battle with Kira in SEED.

  • Ace Custom: His mobile suit for the first half of SEED Destiny is a recolored Murasame in his personal colors.
  • Ace Pilot: His piloting skills make him a feared ZAFT commander.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Has a scene with DaCosta in the Freedom novels where he only appeared as a non-speaking cameo in the film.
  • Affably Evil: It helps that he's more affable than evil. By the end of SEED, the evil part is dropped.
  • An Arm and a Leg: After his fight with Kira, he returns in the final arc of the series missing his left arm and left eye. He has a prosthetic arm attached later on in SEED Destiny.
  • Animal Mecha:
    • Only pilots the nonhumanoid BuCue and LaGOWE.
    • Somehow acquired the Gaia later on in SEED Destiny, which has a Mobile Armor mode like his previous machines.
  • Animal Motifs: He takes his "tiger" nickname to heart, complete with orange and black striped pilot suit.
  • Anti-Villain: He treats all his enemies and opponents with tact and respect, has many interests outside of war, and is both genial and a fan of doing the right thing. He's just not on the protagonist's side... until the end of SEED.
  • Arm Cannon: Hides a really nasty gun within his prosthetic arm in SEED Destiny.
  • Artificial Limbs: Has a prosthetic arm, complete with a built-in shotgun in SEED Destiny.
  • Battle Couple: He and Aisha are this in the LaGOWE.
  • Bigger Stick: While it may not be the latest in military technology by Episode 39 of SEED Destiny, the Gaia Gundam is still a more powerful mobile suit than the Murasame he starts out with, and more than a match for the ZAKU Warrior and GOUF Ignited units used by ZAFT by that point.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He takes his food and especially his coffee very, very seriously. He is however, most effective.
  • The Cameo: In SEED Freedom, Andrew makes a silent one.
  • The Captain: He runs the Eternal for Lacus and serves as her executive officer after helping her steal it in the last act of SEED. She calls him "Captain Waltfeld", so it's a definite switch from his former Commander title. He returns to this role when it gets back in action in SEED Destiny.
  • Commanding Coolness: Another ZAFT Commander, like his model Ramba Ral from Mobile Suit Gundam, he has many deeply loyal subordinates, including his ADC Martin DaCosta, who is simultaneously baffled by and would do anything for him. Waltfeld's clever and easygoing manner ratchets him up to Very Cool.
  • Cool Old Guy: Despite not being that old, he's this when compared to others in the cast, who are mainly teenagers. He has experience, wisdom and steel nerves that they lack.
  • Cool Starship: Lacus is the effective "owner" of the Eternal, but Waltfeld is the actual captain of the vessel.
  • Easily Forgiven: Not of him but by him. In his last battle against Kira in SEED, he loses his left arm, his left eye, and his lover, but bears the young Coordinator no ill will upon reuniting again in the final act of SEED.
  • Expy: He's introduced when SEED is largely a modern retelling of the originally Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, and as such takes the role of Ramba Ral, being a veteran enemy officer and ace pilot during a desert arc who encounters the hero out of battle and has a cordial relationship with them before eventually being killed in battle. Of course, the end of the series brings him back to captain the Eternal and from that point he goes on divergent evolution.
  • Eye Scream: His battle with Kira cost him an eye.
  • First-Name Basis: He's one of very few people who simply call Lacus "Lacus", no honorifics in SEED Destiny. It's more impressive considering that he was more deferential two years ago and that she is technically his boss, if more practically something like a partner-in-crime.
  • Fragile Speedster: The quadruped BuCue and LaGOWE were clearly constructed for hit-and-run tactics. The Eternal is a warship variant; it doesn't pack quite as much firepower as an Archangel-class but it is faster than any other assault vessel in SEED. In SEED Destiny, he pilots a custom-colored Murasame and later the Gaia. He is also still in command of the Eternal.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: After he turns up alive at the end of SEED, he has a very visible scar where his left eye used to be.
  • Handicapped Badass: He can hold his own despite having lost an eye and an arm (now replaced with a prosthetic arm which also conceals a gun just in case).
  • Heel–Face Turn: He joins Lacus after his apparent death in the final act of SEED. It helps that he was shown to have a similar, or at least compatible, outlook on war to her own.
  • Impersonation Gambit: The other half of Lacus's double act to steal Meer's shuttle in SEED Destiny. He plays her manager and points out that Lacus is the one who comes up with these "daring plans".
  • It Gets Easier: He discusses it with Kira and Cagalli and do so again on the Eternal with the whole cast. Unlike Mu, he considers it to be a negative thing.
  • It's Personal: Completely averted rather than blame Kira and swear revenge no matter the cost, as a story like this would usually go, Aisha's death just sours him on the entire war in general and drives him to the Clyne Faction to end it. Andy doesn't blame Kira at all, rather he blames the war itself.
  • Last-Name Basis: Only subverted by Aisha, who calls him Andy. No one else even calls him Andrew.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: He gets a recolored Gaia Gundam by Episode 39 of SEED Destiny, which he uses to defend the Eternal against ZAFT Mobile Suits.
  • Must Have Caffeine: He is regularly seen drinking and/or brewing coffee. The only exception is inside his mobile suit.
  • Noble Demon: Burns down a town after letting the civilians evacuate, leaves the areas he's conquered in relative peace, lets Kira and Cagalli escape when he could have captured them... it's no wonder he couldn't stomach the Zala regime.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: To Erwin Rommel. Has a nickname similar to "The Desert Fox", not to mention being courteous and honorable to his enemies. Bonus points for the fact he even gives the civilians of a town time to evacuate before leveling it, which is something Rommel would have done.
  • No One Could Survive That!: What Kira does to his mech kills Aisha but not him.
  • Odd Friendship: By the time of SEED Destiny, he seems to be able to read the startling and awe-inspiring Lacus more easily than most people, and they work together and get along quite well despite being outwardly quite different.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Murrue by the time of SEED Destiny. After Mu returns, it is shown in the epilogue that he has become the Third Wheel.
  • Pro-Human Transhuman: He's not very prejudiced, and ends up siding with the Three Ships' Alliance.
  • Red Baron: The Desert Tiger.
  • Spell My Name With An S: There were many variations such as "Bartfeld" before the official romanization was clear.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: In SEED Destiny, Andy basically fills the deceased Mu La Flaga's role on the Archangel crew as the veteran soldier advisor who serves as Kira's wingman and older brother figure. Like Mu, he's even offered the captain's seat because of his greater rank and experience and gives it to Murrue instead for the same reason (he's not as familiar with the ship and needs to be available to deploy as a pilot). It's probably no concidence that he leaves Archangel with Lacus to return to his position on the Eternal shortly before the crew finds out Mu actually survived and bring him back on board to eventually retake his previous position.
  • Trademark Favorite Drink: Coffee. Trying new brews is a running gag with him.
  • Transforming Mecha: In SEED Destiny, he starts off with an Ace Custom variant of Orb's Murasame variable-fighter [nicknamed "Torasame" ("Tiger Shark") by Japanese fans], then switches to a recaptured Gaia, recolored according to his specifications. It works out nicely for him seeing as its animal form is more or less the LaGOWE which was his machine of choice back in SEED.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: When he meets with Kira again after their battle, he tells him he doesn't hold any ill will against him at all.
  • Villains Out Shopping: He's constantly experimenting with different coffee brews.
  • Zen Survivor: Waltfeld's not exactly cynical, but he has a knack for spotting trouble and opportunity from a distance and being quite cryptic in his methods.

Waltfeld's ADC and second-in-command.
  • Big Damn Hero: He saves Athrun from being arrested after confronting his father and essentially initiates him into the Clyne Faction in SEED. Prior to that, he also shows up leading a counterstrike force when Athrun and the outlaw Lacus are under heavy fire from a plainclothes unit sent for her by Patrick.
  • The Cameo: In SEED Freedom, he makes a silent one like Andrew.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He joins the Clyne Faction along with Waltfeld in SEED.
  • Number Two: To Andrew Waltfeld. Nothing he does is without matters relating to his boss.
  • Undying Loyalty: Again, to the Desert Tiger. And also seemingly to Siegel and Lacus.

Meyrin in SEED Freedom

Click here to see Meyrin in SEED Destiny

Lunamaria's little sister. Shy around people she doesn't know well, Meyrin is an important part of the Minerva's bridge crew in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny as the one in charge of communications, yet frequently gets overshadowed by her more outgoing older sister. Like Lunamaria, Meyrin also admires Athrun.

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, she is assigned to Terminal, working alongside Athrun.

  • Action Girl: Meyrin may not pilot anything, but she's still a competent getaway driver for Athrun and later an emergency bodyguard for Lacus in SEED Destiny, completely consistent with being a graduate of the ZAFT academy.
  • Act of True Love: She betrayed ZAFT, threw away her old life, and came very close to being killed herself, all in a snap decision to help a desperate Athrun in SEED Destiny.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Makes an Early-Bird Cameo in SEED HD remaster Episode 39 along with her sister and Rey instead of being introduced in SEED Destiny proper.
  • Adrenaline Makeover: She wore Girlish Pigtails until her defection, after which she let her hair loose. Subverted later: in the final episodes of SEED Destiny, she wore her ZAFT uniform, complete with bridge cover, and her hair up in pigtails again.
  • Becoming the Mask: She faked a need to cling to Athrun at Meer's concert. After she has to flee ZAFT with him and they've both emerged from Archangel's infirmary, she does some more of it for real.
  • Bridge Bunny: She's the Minerva's Communications Officer.
  • Celeb Crush: On Athrun Zala in SEED Destiny. Unlike her sister, she's able to accept him for who he is, rather than who she expected.
  • Communications Officer: Her job on the Minerva and later on the Eternal in SEED Destiny. In charge of everything incoming and outgoing, also issues Talia's alerts and oversees the pilots' launches and communicates with them in their mobile suits.
  • Custom Uniform: She wears a Compass pilot suit that's light red with hot pink highlights in SEED Freedom.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Gets a huge one when she ends up engineering Athrun's escape from Gibraltar and then having to go with him — after which she pretty much goes back to being quiet in the background again, and doesn't say or do anything important until the last episode of SEED Destiny.
  • Defecting for Love: Unlike Athrun's trumped-up charges, Meyrin actually did betray ZAFT several times while helping him, when she could have just let him try to escape. Athrun even asked her why, initially, and – still in shock – she said she didn't know. Cagalli remarked it must be this, but it's equally likely Meyrin just wanted to do the right thing. Given what we see of Athrun and Meyrin's relationship, if it ''is'' this, it's not overtly romantic. As SEED Freedom will show, Athrun's heart still belongs to Cagalli and vice versa.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Deliberately Invoked via Modesty Towel in order to delay some soldiers in SEED Destiny. She wasn't even naked underneath the towel!
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Meyrin ditches her Girlish Pigtails for a more looser hairstyle in SEED Freedom.
  • Foil: Meyrin and Cagalli both saved Athrun and display reckless tendencies. But where loud, brash Bifauxnen Cagalli fought Athrun at gunpoint and ended up getting The Big Damn Kiss, then later chose to separate from him several times, gentle, feminine Shrinking Violet Meyrin was constantly on (and later at) Athrun's side, though in a platonic fashion.
  • Girl Next Door: As opposed to high-status near-princesses Cagalli or Lacus or her own flashy, miniskirt-wearing Action Girl sister, Meyrin is this. She even gets an image song with Miriallia to emphasize it.
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Mild and one-sided in SEED Destiny, as Lunamaria doesn't take too much notice of what she's doing unless Athrun is involved or to scold her for something — and never even noticed her fellow crush on Athrun. While it loosely falls into Lunamaria as Pretty and Meyrin as Smart, Meyrin also pays far more attention to her appearance to compensate for her insecurities and shows occasional bouts of envy over tomboyish, careless Luna's more active, glamorous, and Athrun-filled life (for example, trying on Luna's pink miniskirt while Luna was in the shower — and becoming annoyed when it doesn't fit). Subverted after Meyrin vanishes and is apparently executed at Gibraltar and Lunamaria grieves heavily for her, and Meyrin then becomes her Morality Pet when she finally appears alive and well again.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Has a serious hero-crush on Athrun. In a twist, she may actually be the more heroic one.
  • Inside Job: Meyrin busts out her computer skills to create a distraction inside the Gibraltar database for Athrun's escape.
  • I Owe You My Life: She has a mutual one of these with Athrun after helping each other escape ZAFT in SEED Destiny.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: The Omake Quarters CD drama which happens after SEED Destiny has Lunamaria ask her about whether she and Athrun are dating, and while she dances around it, she does pretty much confirm that they aren't. She mentions she's only in Orb as part of a promotion and not for romance and that there's something between Athrun and Cagalli that she doesn't want to get in the way of.
  • Just Friends: What Meyrin is to Athrun in the end. While on date with Cagalli in the prequel novel "The Escape for Two" of SEED Freedom, Athrun was afraid that she would get the wrong idea about his working relationship with Meyrin and assures her that they are just coworkers. His fear was largely one-sided though.
  • Nice Girl: She's shy and noticeably insecure, but she's pleasant to everyone and more observant and a much better listener than Lunamaria. She also performs an Act of True Love and manages to cope pretty well when she subsequently has her life turned upside down, even casually hanging out with the eccentric and isolated Lacus at the end of SEED Destiny, who is a fellow Nice Girl but has not appeared to have many friends of her own age, especially girls.
  • Playful Hacker: Serves as this for Athrun in SEED Freedom when both were assigned to Terminal, which helps Kira get into Artemis to rescue Lacus.
  • Plucky Girl: When under pressure, she can be pretty resourceful. When she has to deal with life after that pressure from being a fugitive, being nearly killed and seriously ill and away from everyone and everything she knows, she's a bit overwhelmed and tends to cling to Athrun in SEED Destiny, but she still carries on and even performs her old job for Lacus on Eternal.
  • She Knows Too Much: Gets caught by Rey in SEED Destiny when helping Athrun sneak into the MS hangar bay, forcing Athrun to take her with him lest she gets tried for treason alongside him.
  • Shrinking Violet: Meyrin is a downplayed version, being shy around people she doesn't really know but more open when knowing them, contrasting Lunamaria in that regard.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Meyrin and Lunamaria are very different people, in spite of (or because of) only eleven months between them. Red coat, Mobile suit pilot, short hair, Custom Uniform of Sexy, brash, confident, chatty for Luna. Green coat for her, bridge crew, long hair, standard uniform, shy, nervous, hides behind people for Meyrin. Also, Luna hanged all over Athrun because of his status while Meyrin hanged all over Athrun later in SEED Destiny, to eventually become a closer friend to him than her sister ever was and for who he is rather than his status. Interestingly, both sisters' behaviors were switched around when meeting Lacus (the real one), Meyrin was really calm while, in the Quarters CD drama set post SEED Destiny, Lunamaria was really nervous at the idea.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Subverted. Like Athrun, Meyrin ends up wearing the same red Morgenroete jacket both he and Cagalli wore in ''SEED'' when they ended up falling for each other... but she ultimately goes back to her ZAFT uniform and old hairdo, and it's been clarified in supplementary material that while she has a crush on him, they aren't a couple.
  • Support Party Member: In SEED Freedom, Meyrin with the AMGS-X18P Cavalier Aifrid Unit-01 provides Athrun's Z'Gok with transport, serving as an AWACs, and even providing indirect fire support.
  • Token Good Teammate: Downplayed, but everybody else on the Minerva stays loyal to Durandal. Meyrin helps Athrun escape injustice, defects herself, and ends up working for Lacus at the end of SEED Destiny.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Luna's tomboy. Meyrin is also this to Cagalli's tomboy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In SEED Freedom, Meyrin goes from a Bridge Bunny to a very skilled hacker, single-handlely seizing the control of the entire security system of the Foundation's Artemis Fortress in Lacus's rescue mission. She also demonstrates piloting skills on the Cavalier Unit accompanying Athrun's Z'Gok.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Makes up a secondary trio by hanging out with the young Minerva mechanics Yolan Kent and Vino Dupre in SEED Destiny. Vino later seems absolutely shattered after she's apparently executed, while Yolan tells him not to mention her anymore.
  • Weight Woe: Downplayed. She's naturally more concerned with her appearance than her sister is and visibly frustrated when she tries on Lunamaria's skirt once and it doesn't fit, but it has more to do with her not being able to play Luna's higher-ranking and more dashing role than her actual weight.

The Harken Team

Tropes that apply to all members

Affiliation: ZAFT (SEED Destiny) → Three Ships Alliance (SEED Destiny) → Compass (SEED Freedom)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hilda_and_simeon_and_herbert.jpg

Hilda, Mars, and Herbert are a trio of former ZAFT pilots who are very loyal to Lacus Clyne in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

  • Attack Pattern Alpha: Their Jet Stream Attack.
  • Custom Uniform: They wear black and purple variations of the standard ZAFT pilot suit. Hilda and Mars also have spikes on their helmets, yellow and orange respectively.
  • Elite Mooks: This trio is among the best pilots in Terminal and head-and-shoulders above any regular ZAFT pilot.
  • Flat Character: We don't learn anything about them, other than their Undying Loyalty to Lacus Clyne. Hilda manages to avert this in SEED Freedom by having more screentime in the movie and displaying more personality traits not shown before.
  • Praetorian Guard: During the Final Battle of SEED Destiny, they defend the Eternal, which has Lacus onboard, with their lives.
  • Undying Loyalty: They are extremely loyal to Lacus.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: They are the Cosmic Era's equivalent of the villainous Black Tri-Stars of the Universal Century timeline, right down to replicating their own version of the "Jet Stream Attack", and they're on the heroes' side unlike the group they were based on. The biggest differences between the the respective trio is that the Black Tri-Stars are an all-male group who were all slain by Amuro during the One Year War, while the Harken Team consists of Two Guys and a Girl, with the sole female being The Leader of the trio, survived the previous war before two of her male subordinates were slain during the movie.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gundam_seed_freedom_hilda.png

A former ZAFT pilot, she defected from the organization during the Second Alliance PLANT War out of loyalty to Lacus, and continues to follow her as a part of Compass in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.

  • Ascended Extra: Hilda gets significantly more to do in SEED Freedom than she did in SEED Destiny as the only one of the Harken Team to survive the Foundation ambush, and with Agnes switching sides, she's effectively the only non-Gundam pilot Compass has left in the finale. She notably rescues Shinn after his initial defeat by Griffin and assists him in the finale by killing Redelard. She also is a bit more fleshed out as a person, as seen in Covert Pervert and Intergenerational Friendship.
  • Cool Big Sis: To both Shinn and Lunamaria in SEED Freedom.
  • Covert Pervert: In SEED Freedom, she's gets pretty up into Lunamaria's personal space and doesn't seem to mind when Shinn unintentionally gropes her while the latter is panicking about a detonating nuke, although to be fair, it's more of an understanding that Shinn is just too shocked at the betrayal and the usage of WMDs to comprehend what he just done.
  • Custom Uniform: Her pilot in SEED Freedom suit is black with dark pink highlights, and the helmet has a pink eye pattern.
  • Designated Girl Fight: Heavily downplayed in SEED Freedom - Hilda takes out Redelard in a Single-Stroke Battle after hiding behind Shinn's afterimages.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She wears her eyepatch and commands her own "Harken Squad".
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Shinn in SEED Freedom. Hilda notably saves Shinn when his Immortal Justice is destroyed and they team up together in the finale.
  • Mrs. Robinson: Downplayed. 22-year old Hilda apparently has the hots for the still-teenaged Lunamaria, much to her discomfort.
  • Red Is Heroic: Her pilot suit is red, and she has orange hair. In SEED Freedom, she later inherits Luna's red Ace Custom GELGOOG Menace once Luna acquired the updated Impulse Gundam.
  • Sole Survivor: In SEED Freedom, Hilda is the only survivor of the Harken team. Herbert and Mars are killed by Foundation during their betrayal of Compass.
  • Thanks for the Mammary: An unintended example in SEED Freedom, as Shinn was so shocked by watching the nukes go off that he reflexively crunched his hands on Hilda's breasts. Hilda, luckily for Shinn, knows that he's just so shocked by the nuclear explosion that she lets it slide.
  • The Leader: SEED Destiny already implied that she was the leader between her, Herbert, and Mars, and it's further supported in SEED Freedom by the official site referring to the trio as the Millenium's "Harken Team."

  • Character Death: In SEED Freedom, he is killed along with Mars by the Black Knight squad during their ambush when they attempt to stop them from finishing off the severely damaged Archangel. They are the only named Compass casualties and the only characters from the series to die.
  • Custom Uniform: His pilot suit in SEED Freedom is black with gray highlights, and the helmet has a green eye pattern.

  • Sorry That I'm Dying: He and Herbert take their deaths in SEED Freedom with dignified resignation, but while Herbert's last words lament how unexpectedly monstrous the Foundation pilots turned out to be, Mars instead apologizes to Hilda for the two of them dying on her.

An ace pilot from the Orb Union, Barry was a member of the Three Ships Alliance during the First Alliance-PLANT War. He piloted an MBF-M1A M1A Astray and was the protector of the Orb vessel Kusanagi. After the end of the war, he left the Kusanagi and travelled on his own path.

Terminal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/terminal.png

Terminal was a non-governmental intelligence organization with agents deployed across the world and the PLANT. The organization had excellent information-gathering capabilities and used its information network to support the Three Ships Alliance and the construction facility called "The Factory", with which it has ties.

Main mecha: ZGMF-1017 GINN -> GAT-01D Long Dagger (Earth Alliance), MBF-M1 M1 Astray (Three Ships Alliance)

Voiced by: Joji Nakata (Japanese)

A first-generation Coordinator, Jean was born on Earth. He later immigrated to PLANT, where he blossomed as a professor of engineering. When tensions began to run high among Naturals and Coordinators, he returned to Earth and enlisted in the Earth Alliance when the First Alliance-PLANT War broke out as he felt this was the best way to stop the hatred from spiraling out of control. After the Earth Alliance began manufacturing mass-produced mobile suits with Natural-use OS, Jean was kicked out of the army as he was of no use to them anymore. He then temporarily joined the Junk Guild and eventually joined forces with Three Ships Alliance and later Terminal.

  • Ace Custom: All of his mobile suits are painted a shade of white.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Like Kira and Gai, He is a Coordinator who fights with his own kind for Earth Alliance until he left the army.
  • Red Baron: "Glimmering Cursed Star J"
  • Sword over Head: During his fight again Yzak at Battle of Porta Panama, his Long Dagger was later disabled by the Gungnir, but he survived as Yzak refused to kill a defenseless opponent and spared him.

Compass

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seed_freedom_compass_logo.png

A peacekeeping organization created by the Atlantic Federation, Orb, and the PLANTs, on the suggestion of Orb's Chief Representative, Cagalli Yula Athha. Their headquarters is located in Aprilius One, the PLANTs' capital city.

    In General
  • Batman Grabs a Gun: Knowing how dangerous the Foundation is, the heroes were forced to bust out upgraded versions of their old Gundams to even the odds against them.
  • Fictional United Nations: Is Cosmic Era's proper version of this, representing the ZAFT, Atlantic Federation and Orb as the universal peacekeeping force across Earth and Space. Just like the real UN, they need the authorization of these three backing powers before they can intervene in conflicts.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Par for the course for the Cosmic Era; the organization's name is pronounced "compass", but based on their logo, it is spelled C.O.M.P.S. It stands for "Compulsory Observational Making Peace Service."
  • Holding Back the Phlebotinum: In accordance with the strict adherence to the Junius Treaty (and public perception that they were too powerful), they restrict themselves to not using any kind of nuclear-powered mobile suits, despite the fact that they were the ones who wrote and enforced the treaty.
  • N.G.O. Superpower: Like Terminal before it, they serve as a powerful group that doesn't belong to any individual superpower. The main difference is that Compass has been officially sanctioned by the three leading blocs in the Cosmic Era.
  • Sigil Spam: They have a notable emblem of wings that they have on all of their uniforms, pilot suits, battleships and the left shoulders of all their mobile suits including the Rising Freedom and Immortal Justice. It's notable because most of the other factions don't have their logos on everything to that degree, and they didn't have any notable markings on the previous generations of Freedom and Justice though this might be a way of demonstrating they're now "legitimate".
  • Start My Own: Lacus was forced to resign as Chairwoman due to public perception being skewed against ZAFT and wanting to show true neutrality in peacekeeping between Earth and space, she accepted to lead Compass on Cagalli's suggestion as her answer to this.

Crew members of the Archangel by the time of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom under Compass.

  • Bridge Bunnies: The Archangel now has Himeko Yuri, a female crewman manning the communications station (replacing Miriallia who now works for Cagalli in Orb) and Yu Kirishima, another male crewman manning the co helmsman station (which was typically left unmanned after Tolle died unless a character not normally on the bridge needed an extra seat as the ship was under staffed following their defection from the Alliance), and although they survive the ship's destruction they vanish from the film afterwards when Murrue, Neumann, and Chandra switch to the Millenium instead.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gundam_seed_freedom_alexei.png

A member of Compass who serves as the captain of the new Super Minerva-class ship Millenium.

  • Gracefully Demoted: While Murrue does offer to let him stay in his position after she, Neumann, and Chandra sneak aboard to "hijack" it, Alexei insists that she be the captain, since she's the senior ship captain in Compass (Archangel having been part of it since its creation while Millenium was a recent addition to their forces). In return, Murrue offers him the position of XO, which he accepts.
  • Hidden Depths: He's described on the official site as being easy-going, but very sharp.

A capable member of Compass who serves as the Millenium's head of technology.

  • Insufferable Genius: Albert is very competent in his field, and is well-aware of it. The only people in the movie that he shows respect towards are Kira, Lacus, and Alexei.
  • Motor Mouth: He's consistently shown to talk fast.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Despite only first being introduced in Freedom, it turns out Albert has been a major contributor to the heroes all the way since the first series and is one of the most famous MS creators in CE. A PLANT technology designer and Clyne loyalist, he was one of the lead designers on the original Freedom and Justice and it was implied to be Albert who was Lacus's inside source that told her about it and gave her the means for her and Kira to steal Freedom in the first place. Albert later was the main designer for their successors, the Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice, and following the second war joined Compass and developed Rising Freedom and Immortal Justice in cooperation with Orb. In short, Lacus's ability to acquire and/or build cutting edge mobile suits throughout the entire franchise was mostly thanks to this one guy.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: Given the Proud Defender he created turned the Strike Freedom Type II into an over-the-top powerhouse even by Cosmic Era standards, there aren't many mechanics in this universe that can match him. In fact, it turns out he has been a key developer in every single Freedom and Justice related Gundam since the beginning.
