"Wanna taste my claws?"
Dark Wolf

Voiced By: Angel Guadarrama (Menu & Battle) / Luis Bermudez (Story Mode & Alternate Skin) (English), Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese), Han Man-joong (Korean)
Attribute: Inferno
Role: Fighter

A boisterous wolf man trying to keep a good look within Shadow Decree. He's Leon's partner. He is a fighter Esper who relies on enduring damage and will do even more damage the lower his HP is.

  • Claw of Greed deals damage equal to 120% Freddy's attack stat towards a single enemy. If Freddy's HP is under 50%, he does a second attack which also does 120% damage while gaining an 30% critical rate increase and ignores 20% of an enemy's defense.
  • Wolf Strike deals damage equal to 210% of his attack stat while increasing his attack and grants the Standoff buff for two turns.
  • Thrill of the Hunt deals damage that's equal to 260% of his attack stat towards an enemy and removing 2 of their buffs. Its damage increases by 5% per every 10% HP lost.

  • Animal Motifs: The wolf, which is stylized after the wolf Fenrir from Norse mythology.
  • Arc Villain: Of Inescapable Fate, except it turns out he's completely innocent, and the Shadow Decree as a whole is not even involved as assumed by Li Ling. Freddy was really trying to help Yalina find her doll, but Li Ling quickly jumped the gun and mistook Freddy as a kidnapper. It's Yalina who was the culprit trying to kidnap Freddy instead.
  • Artwork and Game Graphics Segregation: His character art depicts him with a white muzzle on the lower half of his face that reaches past his eyes. His in-game model is different about it: while he still has a white muzzle, it doesn't go past his eyes, but he has bushy eyebrows behind his glasses.
  • Beast Man: He's a giant wolf man.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: In the second story mode, he saves both the player and Sachiko from being crushed by the falling mines after Sachiko saw how wounded he was holding the wall up and offered to take his place for him to go seek help, though obviously, he doesn't admit the act.
  • Cool Shades: His trademark sunglasses, which are custom-made and very expensive. In the character screen, his idle animation is panicking over his glasses falling off.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His easygoing nature hides a dark past of an implied delinquent with scars, except info on that is quickly glossed over by his Esper appearance.
  • The Glasses Come Off: Whenever he gets serious, he removes his shades to go all out, though only during cutscenes.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: His leather jacket and braces, which further push his bad dude image.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • He might look like a bruiser, but he has a deep understanding of fashion. He also shows care to Leon (in his own way).
    • He admits that, while he's no saint, he's not a coward who doesn't own up to his own crimes.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Despite being part of a villainous organization, he doesn't mind helping little children out when they come to him (as was the case with Yalina, even though she secretly was trying to kidnap him to make a family for herself).
  • Hipster: It's in his description, even. Too bad he is too much of one that he falls for scams easily.
  • Hunk: According to his Divinate info, the moment he turned into the werewolf he is today, he started to take better care of his good looks and believes himself to be even more handsome for it.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Despite his rugged looks, he makes it a habit to ensure he always looks cool because it's his top priority. The "feminine" part comes with his hair (which he takes hours to perfect it) and his fixation on fashion trends (which has led to falling for scams).
  • Last Chance Hit Point: Wolf Strike grants him a Standoff buff which prevents him from dying.
  • Might Makes Right: Freddy believes that the answer to violence is more violence and has always resorted to that as his first move. In fact if he's unable to defeat his opponents, he believes that he's weak. He also believes that the weak are only capable of being trampled over by the strong.
    Fenrir: Strength...is what matters.
  • Mighty Glacier: His general utility is being able to take damage while returning them in spades. Wolf Strike gives him Stand-Off and Attack buffs to survive lethal blows while Claw of Greed has an assured follow-up whenever he attacks with less that 50% of his health. A very popular build with him is pumping him relics with Hades (a set that grants lifesteal) and Sword Avatara (a set that grants a chance for counterattack), turning him into a self-sustaining bruiser.
  • The Narcissist: His ego is much bigger than he is physically. He will stubbornly show off his good looks to anyone nearby, which often is Leon, much to his chagrin.
  • Recurring Boss: He's often a boss at the end of every chapter, alongside Leon or by himself.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: A color swapped version, Freddy is the Hot-Blooded and beastly red to Leon’s stoic and cold and calculating blue.
  • Saying Too Much: At the end of Chapter 3, he accidentally informs Brynn and company about Sieg's location at Hazlitt, and then he complains they tricked him into saying it (they didn't trick him).
  • Serious Business:
    • His shades. He is so fixated on them that he proclaims himself to be the King of Shades, until he meets Unky Chai and concedes that he's officially the (current) King of Shades.
    • As stated above, his hair. He doesn't seem to mind much paying exorbitant amounts of money if it'll give him good hair.
  • Sunglasses at Night: Very attached to his expensive custom-made sunglasses that he wears them even at night.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Invoked (unless YMMV). His motto is that good looks and sharp claws make the man.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Leon, whom he often comes to blows and dislikes his "Mad Dog" nickname. Very deep down, Freddy knows he can count on Leon.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: A hulking biker-looking Beast Man who wears sunglasses and is very meticulous about his looks. His review page is chock full of "reviews" about his appearance.
  • Worthy Opponent: Considers Unky Chai this because he is officially the King of Shades and admits that Unky's shades look pretty damn good.

    Leon (Vali)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leon_sprite.png
"Each bullet has a purpose."

Voiced By: Robert Kemp (English), Takayuki Ishii (Japanese), Um Sang-hyun (Korean)
Attribute: Flow
Role: Fighter

A cold sniper with zero emotions and partner to Freddy. He is an single-target fighter based around transferring debuffs to enemies across the field thanks to his passive, Eye for an Eye.

  • Coldhearted deals damage that's equal to 140% of Leon's attack stat towards an enemy with a 100% chance of giving them with the Diseased debuff for 2 turns.
  • Eye for an Eye is a passive that transfers a single debuff from Leon to a target before he attacks.
  • Deadly Sear deals damage that's equal to 300% of his attack stat and inflicts the Sear debuff on an enemy. The attack is 100% more likely to land a critical hit if the target is inflicted with debuffs.

  • Calling Card: His signature red bullets. Ollie carries one around in his search for Leon after the latter assassinated his father.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: His youth was filled with too much death and pain that he eventually grew numb to both even if he ends up causing it himself, losing any purpose for the meaning of life.
  • Cold Sniper: He's very calculated, professional, and to the point unlike his boisterous partner, making him a good fit for a sniper unit.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Leon was considering to take suicide as an option when the loan sharks he took loans from went to kill his brother Joseph and left him in his last moments alive, but Joseph told him to keep living on, convincing Leon to do just that after he himself killed the loan sharks in retaliation.
  • Dramatic Irony: He takes cues from the Norse god Vali, who was born for the sole purpose to slay Hodur for killing Baldr (after being tricked by Loki). The dramatic irony comes from the fact that Hall (modeled after Hodur) is the only person Leon is willing to be friendly to, and Hall's brother Bardon (modeled after Baldr, who was Vali's brother) is a complete stranger to Leon.
  • Evil Redhead: A head of red hair and a member of the Shadow Decree.
  • Instrument of Murder: While none of his attacks have anything to do with music, his rifle bares resemblance to a saxophone. One of his bounty side stories reveals that he can actually turn it into a functioning sax, and play it pretty damn well to boot.
  • Jerkass: Although Freddy can count on Leon during their missions, Leon honestly couldn't care less what happens to Freddy as long as he can use him as a meatshield. Long Mian can see how deceptive Leon can be to Freddy, tricking the wolf man into doing what Leon wants him to do.
  • Morality Pet: Hall, who reminds Leon of his deceased brother. He's far friendlier to Hall than he is to Freddy.
  • Morph Weapon: As stated above, his signature rifle can be transformed into a saxophone.
  • My Greatest Failure: His past with his brother Joseph. Joseph was an aspiring saxophone player who wanted to go professional, but his debts for higher education were too high, so Leon took a loan from a Loan Shark to get the money, enlisting to work for them on their targets to assassinate behind Joseph's back. However, despite Leon almost finishing his repayment, the loan sharks decided to kill Joseph out of nowhere. Though Joseph's dying words helped Leon continue living, he still wonders if things could've been different if he hadn't opted to be an assassin or if he should have taken his own life.
  • The Nicknamer: Gave Freddy his "Mad Dog" nickname and uses it whenever Freddy is stepping out of line, which infuriates Freddy from time to time.
  • Obsessively Organized: Little details such as a door's frame being taller than all the rest drive him nuts (mentally) and will do everything to ensure nothing as small as that remains different. This may even leak into his taste on jazz music whenever he finds certain notes to be subpar.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: In the second story mode, he's oddly friendly towards Sachiko - an Esper Union member - after she suggests a truce with the other Shadow Decree members trapped in the rubble of the collapsed mine, saying that he's also human and accepts her help. This gets later averted when it turns out Yamato had disguised himself as Leon to study the player hearing the call of the Withering Miracle.
  • Professional Killer: His main profession, modeled after the Norse god Vali, who's entire purpose to be born was to slay Hodur for killing Baldr.
  • Recurring Boss: Much like Freddy, Leon pops up as a boss throughout the main story, either with Freddy or on his own.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: A colour swapped version, Leon is The Stoic, cold and calculating blue to Freddy’s Hot-Blooded and beastly red.
  • The Stoic: Leon has a cold, calculated disposition which contrasts with the loud and brash Freddy.

    Berenice (Bastet)

"If I hadn't run away, umm...never mind..."
Gyrate's Solstice

Voiced By: Nicky Boland (English), Maaya Uchida (Japanese), Kim Seo-yoon (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Support

Leader of the Moon Eye, who joined up with the Shadow Decree, and an old friend of Brynn's. Berenice is a support Esper who can inflict debuffs and shield her allies.

  • Feline Grace attacks an enemy three times. Each hit deals damage equivalent to a percentage of Berenice's ATK. It also has a chance to inflict DEF Down to the target.
  • Instant Combo attacks an enemy three times. Each hit deals damage equivalent to a larger percentage of Berenice's ATK. It also has a chance to lower the target's AP.
  • Moon Dance grants all allies a shield equivalent to a percentage of Berenice's Max HP. If an ally is buffed while the shield is up, they gain extra shields. Ascending this ability will also grant all allies Recovery along with the shield.

  • Bittersweet Ending: She loses everyone at her Moon Eye clan, but she manages to turn back to a dependable ally and best friend to Brynn, is implied to have passed the Esper Union certification exam she had failed several times, and becomes a Chief Ops.
  • Cat Girl: Her motif, down to her movements and Verbal Tic.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Due to her kind nature as a medic. She doesn't even hesitate to treat punks, who then decide to follow her and even have gotten a greater purpose through her.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Or rather pose switch. Her introduction depicts her with a pose that's not like her real pose she uses for the rest of the game, making her a unique character who has more than one static pose.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Due to the Esper Union being unable to help her refugee team and because she herself was unable to pass the certification exam, she became stressed so much that she partnered up with Shadow Decree despite the many times she turned them down, who offered to help her and her subjects in exchange of turning her group into more of their lackeys.
  • False Friend: She is put in opposition against her friend Brynn under orders from Shadow Decree, though her hatred is more reserved to the Esper Union for not being able to provide help to her and her Hazlitt's refugees. Still, since Brynn is part of the Esper Union, she abhors her decision.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Her Interface Spoiler reveals her Shadow Decree affiliation even before meeting her proper in the story. But once the story is over, she has done her Heel–Face Turn, and her profile is updated with the fact she managed to become a Chief Ops in the Esper Union.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Once she learns that the Shadow Decree turned her fellow members into brainwashed disposable minions willing to self-destruct upon defeat, she switches sides to help Brynn and pretty much becomes the fourth main character. Her alliance to Brynn is questioned by Drew, but Berenice proves her loyalty.
  • Gotta Pass the Class: Has attempted to pass the Esper Union certification exam to become a member, but she failed it, and fears about disappointing Luo Yan. But since joining the Shadow Decree, she can't do the exam ever again...at least until her Heel–Face Turn. By the end of the story, her profile implies that she passed it.
  • Interface Spoiler: It's completely possible to learn about her true affiliation even before meeting her. Her Heel–Face Turn, however, is a different matter.
  • It's Personal: She dislikes Bonnie for forcing her team members to explode.
  • Last of Her Kind: She loses every Moon Eye member and is driven into a Heroic BSoD, but she thankfully manages to push forward to avenge them.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother has been dead since she was a child due to Miramon implied to have killed her.
  • The Medic: She's a kind-hearted medic who utilizes perfumes on the side.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: She became a huge fan of Brynn because her songs cheered her up. It also helped that they became close friends. Then she has no choice but to join with the Shadow Decree to look after her friends.
  • Token Good Teammate: Deep down, she's a woman who sought desperate measures to aid her clan and really isn't as mad to Brynn as she makes it out to be. Then she defects from the Shadow Decree after they start using her own members as disposable, explosive, brainwashed cannon fodder.
  • Verbal Tic: Likes saying "nya" every so often.

    Hall (Hodur)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hall_sprite.png
"Don't speak of him in my presence."

Voiced By: Eddy Yeung (English), Hiro Shimono (Japanese), Shin Beom-sik (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Fighter

A blind archer with poor communication skills, brother to Bardon. He is a fighter Esper who can inflict single debuffs on foes and even follow up allies' attacks with his own.

  • Arrow of Eternal Solitude attacks an enemy, dealing damage based on Hall's ATK with a chance to inflict ATK Down.
  • Mistletoe Hunter is a passive ability. When an ally attacks a single target, Hall will follow up with an extra srike, dealing damage based on his ATK. When ascended, he'll also inflict Poison.
  • Silent Night attacks two random enemies, dealing damage based on Hall's ATK with a chance to inflict DEF Down and Poison.

  • Aloof Archer: He's fairly stoic and doesn't have great people skills, and although he's blind, he can still be a superb marksman. It ties to the Norse god Hodur, who was also a blind archer.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Discussed. He desperately craves for approval and gratitude from others, or else he finds no meaning or satisfaction in his life.
  • Cain and Abel: The villainous Hall is bitter towards his brother, the heroic Bardon, over how he takes all of the spotlight. In a heated confrontation, he pointed his arrow at Bardon, which permanently wrecked their relationship.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite his dark looks and overall reclusive personality, all of that melts away if he's treated with care and kindness.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • The Norse god Vali was born in retaliation to kill Hodur wrongfully killing Baldr due to Loki tricking him into it. Inheriting Vali's theme, Leon has zero hatred and need to kill Hall, instead treating him as if he were his dead brother, while Hall can't help being happy around Leon. Moreover, Vali was also Baldr and Hodur's brother, but Leon is unrelated to both Hall and Bardon by blood.
    • Although he's from the Shadow Decree, he still likes watching superhero movies for the heroes, and he collects superhero merchandise.
  • Driven by Envy: The reason behind his falling out with Bardon was because Bardon was popular with people, while Hall was the entire opposite.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Quit the Esper Union once he was too much Driven by Envy because of his brother.
  • Handicapped Badass: He's blind, and yet he can be very good with the bow and arrow. This ties him to his Esper powers to Hodur, the Norse blind son of Odin and Frigg, and brother to Baldr (which his brother Bardon's powers derive from) and others. Hodur was also an archer, and Hall's passive "Mistletoe Hunter" is a direct reference to Baldr's Weaksauce Weakness, which was the mistletoe, which Loki tricked the blind Hodur into using to shoot and kill Baldr.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's a conventionally attractive dude with smooth, long hair that Jeanne is quite impressed by and is shocked to learn that all he uses to keep it that way is water.
  • Morality Pet: He’s one to Leon. Hall is one of (if not) the only members of the Shadow Decree that Leon’s nice to, as he reminds Leon of his deceased younger brother.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Just recently defected to the Shadow Decree.
  • Poisonous Person: Two of his abilities can inflict Poison on his targets. This is likely another connection to Hodur, who was tricked into using mistletoe to kill Baldr, which is a poisonous plant in real life.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Not a hero per se, but his insecurities towards his brother come from Hall's lack of social skills.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Doesn't wear a shirt, showing his body tattoos.

    Tang Yun (Six-Eared Macaque)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tang_yun_six_eared_macaque.png
"Don't...even think about taking what's mine."
Flowing Jade

Voiced By: Christopher Glass (English), Kensho Ono (Japanese), Jang Seo-hwa (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Fighter

A quiet, lonely man with troubled emotions. He is a fighter Esper who specializes in dealing multiple blows by triggering critical hits.
  • Iron Polearm deals damage equivalent to a percentage of Tang Yun's ATK. It also has a chance to inflict Stun as well as trigger a Pursuit, which will allow Tang Yun to attack again.
  • Talisman of Inward Devilry attacks an enemy twice. Each hit deals damage equivalent to a percentage of Tang Yun's ATK, while also having a chance to trigger a Pursuit. Ascending it will give it the ability to ignore a percentage of the enemy's DEF, which will allow it to do more damage.
  • Avatara attacks an enemy three times. Each hit deals damage equivalent to a large percentage of Tang Yun's ATK. Landing a critical hit will trigger a Pursuit.

  • Always Identical Twins: With his brother Tang Xuan before they became Espers, which made it much easier to tell them apart. Even after that they still share some identical attributes, such as similar weapons, hairstyles, and a love of pudding.
  • Animal Motifs: Just like his brother, the monkey. The Six-Eared Macaque - otherwise known as the Fake Sun Wukong - is the antagonist to the Sun Wukong.
  • Arc Villain: He's tried to pass off as this during the Sea of Sorrow event for the murder of Masato and implying he was Kokuzan, but he's being misblamed and controlled by the real culprit.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite his indifferences towards his twin brother, Yun still bothered to wish him a happy birthday on their shared birthday (after Xuan had tried to message him on Swiftspace).
  • Cain and Abel: The villainous Yun has a complicated relationship with the heroic Xuan, and the former even desires to kill the latter.
  • Chick Magnet: Due to his quiet, gentle demeanor, ladies seem to flock around him, though most girls are reminded of his older brother Tang Xuan.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Even the coldest of hearts can't help but melt when his face is seen.
  • The Empath: He's aware of and sensitive to the needs and feelings of people around him.
  • Expressive Ears: It's said that his ears make him look like a sad puppy when they droop down.
  • Identical Twin Mistake: Prior becoming Espers that changed their appearances, people and even their own parents had trouble recognizing Tang Yun for his brother Tang Xuan.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Extremely possessive of the things he loves, to the point where he'll destroy them if he can't have them but others can derive pleasure from them.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Deep within his mind, he is very guilty of having a falling out with his brother.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: To his twin Tang Xuan, whose mythological power is the opposite to Tang Yun's.
  • The Prankster: He learned how to do origami from Ophelia, but then he used that to scare Xie Yuzhi and make him believe he was cursed. Yuzhi was pretty pissed.
  • Sanity Slippage: Choosing to ignore the voice of reason in his head for pushing his brother away further plunged him into "the black abyss of his soul."
  • Sibling Murder: Looks forward to the day he can kill his brother, but at the same time, the thought fills him with inexplicable dread.
  • Sweet Tooth: For chocolate pudding, which can earn anyone his undivided attention and cooperation.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Getting him angry can make him lose control of his Esper powers, unless someone can whip up chocolate pudding for him to calm down quickly.

    Jeanne (Gerd)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jeanne_gerd.png
"Nothing beats a cool set of drums!"

Voiced By: Aimee Smith (English), Ru Thing (Japanese), Jung Yu-jung (Korean)
Attribute: Flow
Role: Controller

A flamboyant punk rock drummer within the Shadow Decree. She is a controller Esper who prefers stunning several foes at once.

  • Punk attacks an enemy three times, dealing damage based on Jeanne's ATK. Each hit has a chance to stun the target.
  • Cool Rhythms attacks three random enemies, dealing damage based on Jeanne's ATK. This attack also has a chance to inflict Stun. When ascended, it steals some of the target's AP.
  • Beat Burst attacks an enemy twice. The first hit deals damage based on Jeanne's ATK, dispelling all buffs from the target. The second hit deals damage based on Jeanne's Max HP, while also stunning the target.

  • '80s Hair: She sports a bright pink mullet that's very long in the back.
  • Always Second Best: She hated to be compared to her perfect sister, until the Miracles arrived and she learned through her sister's passing that one should live their life fiercely and passionately because [one] only lives once.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Brynn. While Brynn likes to perform for all kinds of people, Jeanne prefers to perform in the seediest underground bars.
  • Law VS Chaos: Chaos aligned and discussed. She believes that the Union is just a bunch of "self-centered do-gooders" that can't be relied upon because the Miracle threat hasn't lessened under their watch, and that the Shadow Decree's drastic measures are needed to save the world despite the fact the Shadow Decree is out to conquer the world and most of its members are incredibly selfish people.
  • Lead Drummer: Despite being the drummer, she is the leader of her own band.
  • Loophole Abuse: It's hard to convince her to back off when she sets her sights on people she wants to pull into her band, since she is nearly impossible to persuade to change her mind. If they vaguely say that they weren't thinking about it, she convinces them just because they never said "no."
  • The Paralyzer: All of her abilities have at least a chance to stun her targets.
  • Posthumous Sibling: Her sister passed away after the Miracles arrived.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Her Esper connection to the Norse goddess Gerd is very loose compared to other Espers. It may just be how Gerd was associated with the earth, which is what Jeanne can shake using her loud music. Gerd was also known to be a giantess, which is probably linked to Jeanne's unforgettable presence on the stage as the Lead Drummer.
  • Slasher Smile: Invoked. Her lipstick runs really far across the left side of her mouth, making her smiles come across this.

    Li Ao (Tao Tie)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/li_ao_sprite.png
"You got to eat! Fighting take energy."

Voiced By: Brent Miller (English), Jun'ichi Suwabe (Japanese), Choi Hyeon-su (Korean)
Attribute: Inferno
Role: Defender

A monstrous-looking man with a voracious appetite. He is a defender Esper who can temporarily prevent one foe from acting or getting aid.

  • Ravenous One deals damage to an enemy based on Li Ao's ATK, while also having a chance to Taunt them.
  • Binge deals damage to an enemy based on Li Ao's ATK, healing Li Ao by a percentage of his Max HP and having a chance to dispel all the target's buffs. When ascended, the ability will heal Li Ao a small amount for each buff dispelled from the target.
  • Uncaged Beast deals damage to an enemy based on Li Ao's ATK and inflicts Devour. Devour prevents an enemy from taking actions, as well as being selected, attacked, buffed or debuffed. If the target's HP is higher than a certain amount, Devour will last an extra turn. Devour will immediately go away if Li Ao dies or has no other teammates left on the field.

  • Big Eater: Known for his voracious appetite. He represents the Chinese monster Tao Tie, who was defined by its gluttony and greed.
  • Body Horror: His head is obscured by his "helmet," which seems to be alive. And his right hand is a sentient face, representing the human-like head that Tao Tie had on his armpit.
  • Futile Hand Reach: When defeated, his right hand tries to reach out for a dropped meat bun before he faints completely.
  • Greed: One of the two characteristics that defined the Chinese monster Tao Tie. However, despite his namesake, it's an aversion since Li Ao is friendly enough to share the dishes he finds very delicious with others, even to his partner Bonnie.
  • Morality Pet: Peculiarly, he's this to the headstrong Bonnie.
  • Nice Guy: He is a very friendly person, unless he is pushed to his breaking point.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Meat buns. He's even seen carrying one in his menu animation and battle, which he uses as bait to make his right hand capture a foe.
  • Tragic Monster: He was bullied for his voracious appetite, leading to fits of rage that made him destroy everything around him. Worse, after coming to, he would go home and eat his guilt away while crying (like a baby).
  • True Companions: With Bonnie, who supported him into being who he is.

    Bai Liuli (White Snake)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bai_liuli_white_snake.png
"Becoming a hero? That's a fantasy of mine."

Voiced By: Lauren Hancock (English), Yuka Amemiya (Japanese), Kim Down (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Fighter

A kind-hearted gang member whose good views on justice are out of place at the Shadow Decree. She is a fighter Esper who can inflict a few status ailments while providing some healing to her team.

  • Hiss attacks an enemy, dealing damage based on Bai Liuli's ATK and has a chance to inflict Silence.
  • Shedding is a passive ability that removes a random debuff at the beginning of each turn. When ascended, she also restores a small amount of HP team-wide.
  • Incorporeal launches five attacks on random enemies that deal damage based on Bai Liuli's ATK. Each attack has a chance of stealing a buff from the target and inflicting Sear. The ability prioritizes enemies it hasn't hit yet, and deals less damage to enemies that have been hit more than once.

  • Animal Motifs: The white snake, which refers to the Chinese White Snake goddess.
  • Cycle of Revenge: Her grandfather's death was collateral damage caused by people seeking revenge on him, causing her to seek revenge herself on them.
  • The Cynic: When her grandfather died, she disliked how the world really was and started fighting back in the name of revenge. Despite this, she's actually pretty nice.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite how she wants to protect her people and how gang members change their ways when they meet her, she believes that she'll never become a hero.
  • Kick the Dog: On top of her social anxiety, she gets kicked out of her theater club with no explanation as to why everyone in there decided on. Through a talk to Uday, Bai Liuli realizes that, beyond theater talk, she really didn't know any of the club members.
  • A Mother to Her Men:
    • Her kind-hearted nature has won her the hearts of many gang members that they even turn over a new leaf and turn to making handmade items to sell online. This aligns to her Esper form, as the White Snake goddess provided healing and health advice to her followers.
    • She very much behaves like a mother to Jacob to the point she also hums lullabies for him so he can sleep peacefully.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: She's not much of a social person and can't bring herself to go to social events other than going to the theater or the opera.
  • Token Good Teammate: One of the very good eggs among the Shadow Decree. The only thing that barely makes her qualify as a criminal is her desire for Revenge for the people who caused her grandfather's death by collateral damage, but she still fantasizes about becoming a hero.

Epic

    Jacob (Jormungand)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jacob_jormungand.png
"I'm so tired. Where's a good siesta spot?"

Voiced By: Daniel Amerman (English), Yūki Kaji (Japanese), Jang Seo-hwa (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Controller

A guard working for the Shadow Decree, Jacob frequently yawns as he learns for a nap. Despite his lazy attitude, he is efficient in battle.
Jacob is a controller Esper who's dedicated to blocking the Poison status to be inflicted on your Units with his Entoxification ability while inflicting the aforementioned status on enemies.
  • Serpentine damages an enemy based on Jacob's ATK with a chance of inflicting Poison.
  • Entoxification grants the Fangs status to the party, meaning allies are unable to be poisoned and might counter an attack by poisoning the attacker. When the Fangs status is up, receiving damage has a chance of inflicting Poison on whoever attacked them for a single turn.
  • Dust to Dust deals damage to all enemies that's based on Jacob's ATK with a chance of inflicting Poison. This attack cannot be dodged. When ascended, if the Poison status successfully lands or the targets are already poisoned, then it inflicts Petrification.

  • Animal Motifs: The snake, which symbolizes Jormungand, the World Serpent of Norse mythology. Fittingly, he used to wander Graywater, where Triki - Loki's manifestation as an Esper, whom Jormungand was Loki's middle child - is the leader of the city (though Triki is unrelated to Jacob otherwise).
  • Berserk Button: Don't make fun of his baby face. It's the one thing that will make him snap.
  • Birds of a Feather: He and Bai Liuli share the same motif for their snake-like Esper powers, reinforcing their close friendship.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He is deadly in battle, but he is very lazy otherwise and is only trying to end battles quickly so that he can sleep sooner.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In order to get back to his nap as quickly as possible, Jacob would fight in a productive and intense matter and doesn't bother showing off in battle as he doesn't like battling in general.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: He will pay no attention or listen to anyone unless it's Bai Liuli, whom Jacob is very fond of.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Prefers to be alone so he can have nice naps, being as unapproachable to people as possible. Even his snake is unapproachable.
  • Noodle Incident: What was he doing at one of Cang Ji's lectures, in an auditorium that normally gets a lot of noise from people?
  • Poisonous Person: His kit revolves around the transferring of the poison debuff while making his team immune to the status themselves.
  • Right-Hand Attack Dog: In battle, Jacob's serpent companion does his attacks and it's implied that he commands it as indicated by his battle animations.
  • Secret-Keeper: ...Of the best napping spots in the Shadow Decree HQ, which he won't tell anyone else so he's not disturbed in any of them. Unfortunately for him, Liuli knows those spots when she needs his aid.
  • Sleepyhead: His defining trait. He often seeks out rest and not even a full twelve hours of sleep is enough for him. As a result, he's frequently seen sleeping and yawning all of the time. In fact, he gets infuriated when people bother his rest. His idle animations show him leaning toward his serpent companion as he tries to fall asleep but it keeps him up for the fight.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Downplayed here. Jacob, a member of the villain group, the Shadow Decree, represents the World Serpent, Jormungand, and thus has a snake motif. He has snake-based attacks and a serpent companion who's described as being unapproachable and cold-blooded like its companion. However, he isn't actively malicious as even after joining the Shadow Decree he's quite lazy and indifferent about people and is happy when he doesn't have any missions to do, so he can rest. In fact, the unfriendly reputation he gains helps him gain additional sleep.

    Lynn (Hathor)

"When things get difficult, leave it to me."

Voiced By: Jess Nahikian (English), Arisa Suzuki (Japanese), Bi Ju-eon (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Fighter

A gentle Lady of War with great cooking skills. She is a fighter Esper with a wide assortment of different offensive and defensive effects.
  • Dance of Fate attacks an enemy twice, each hit dealing damage based on Lynn's ATK. If Lynn lands a critical hit, she gains Immunity.
  • Eye of the Goddess attacks an enemy three times, dealing damage based on Lynn's ATK, as well as having a chance to dispell one buff per strike. If she does dispell a buff, the target is inflicted with ATK Down.
  • Ruler of Dendera attacks an enemy multiple times, dealing damage based on Lynn's ATK and granting her a shield. The shield absorbs damage equal to a certain percent of Lynn's Max HP. This ability also inflicts Sear on the target. When ascended, if Lynn gets a critical hit, she does more damage, gets more AP, and her shield strength is increased.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's thanks to Anesidora that Lynn carried out her act of revenge against the foreman who didn't care to ensure that her parents were in a safe environment at the mines where they were killed in an alleged accident. However, her profile notes that Anesidora's appearance was "coincidental," implying that there's more to this history than meets the eye.
  • Animal Motifs: The cow, which represents Hathor, the Egyptian goddess of love.
  • Birds of a Feather:
    • She can be more or less an invoked Distaff Counterpart to Djoser, who's also another Esper deriving his powers from a bovine Egyptian god. Both of them like to cook as their favorite hobby and are generally the nicest among the group. The only difference putting them apart is the fact that Djoser is a Tragic Villain.
    • Surprisingly with Long Mian, due to both of them losing their pets and being unable to move on. She's one of the few people who understand his inner issues.
  • Fangirl: Of the idol Miss Meow, whom she's in love with (not romantically, apparently).
  • Lady of War: And dresses pretty damn good.
  • Limited Animation: She only had one still mugshot during side tales, though later updates fixed that for newly added side tales.
  • Nice Girl: It says a whole lot when you're within a group full of psychos, murderers, megalomaniacs, and sadists.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: The first time she snapped was when she found out about the foreman who couldn't care less about ensuring her parents were safe at the mines. Otherwise, though, she's a really Nice Girl.
  • The Strategist: Noted to be an extremely effective and dependable ally in battle by analyzing the moves of every enemy to strike their weakest point.
  • Supreme Chef: Enjoys cooking as her hobby, which she happily cooks for the Shadow Decree. A general warning is that people who eat her food will crave for more.
  • Team Mom: She has a rather motherly aura around her that she can't help looking out a lot for her coworkers. Sadly, most of them are crazy.
  • Token Good Teammate: Perhaps the biggest one of the whole organization. It's actually rather hard to understand why she'd join with the Shadow Decree full time as she's by far an overall nice person without dark motives other than her act to avenge her parents - which Anesidora helped her to carry out - in an alleged mine incident caused by the foreman. She's also indifferent to the power struggle between her own faction and the Esper Union while she still yearns for peace and stability. To make the issue even harder to stomach, she's modeled after Hathor, the Egyptian goddess of love, beauty, music, dancing, fertility, and pleasure. Hathor was also a protector of women.

"I can't wait to see the new addition to my collection."
Red Phosphorus

Voiced By: P.M. Seymour (English), Kōki Uchiyama (Japanese), Choi Hyeon-su (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Controller

A taxidermist and "collector" with a twisted take on life preservation. He is a controller Esper who can freeze foes and slow them down.

  • Stinger attacks an enemy twice, dealing damage based on Long Mian's ATK with a chance to inflict SPD Down.
  • Hoarfrost attacks all enemies, dealing damage based on Long Mian's ATK and lowering their AP. When ascended, if any of the enemies are afflicted with SPD Down, their AP is lowered further.
  • Cold Touch attacks all enemies, dealing damage based on Long Mian's ATK with a chance to inflict both SPD Down and Freeze.

  • An Ice Person: He is extremely adept at his ice powers, and he can make many small ice sculptures in perfect detail of real living beings out of thin air. Logically, he can't stand hot climates.
  • Animal Motifs: The ice dragon, referring to Ao Bing; the Chinese dragon prince who wielded a spear in battle.
  • Ax-Crazy: Under his good looks, he is a rather twisted individual who enjoys freezing Miramon and people as ice sculptures to add to his growing collection of "art." To make a point, he stuffed his own dead dog and slept with it when he was a child.
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: He is An Ice Person affiliated with the Shadow Decree and also is a creepy taxidermist.
  • Fragile Speedster: His main stat is his high speed, allowing him to drop into foes faster to stop them in their tracks with his slowing effects. His Captain Ability is providing his whole team with 20% more speed. Don't be so surprised if many higher Point War teams have him leading teams.
  • Horned Humanoid: His attractive appearance is taken several notches down by the demonic frozen horns on his head.
  • Mad Artist: He thinks freezing people and Miramon is a way to preserve their beauty forever, which is ignoring that the participants are often unwilling.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Perhaps not a bastard per se, but he basically tricks Freddy into amassing Miramon by having him come up with a plan to round up Miramon into a hole, making it much easier for Long Mian to avoid doing any work (it was hot where they were) and pick his favorite Miramon to preserve. Freddy is led to believe that Long Mian is a Nice Guy as a result.
  • Meaningful Name: “Long” is Chinese for dragon, which is what Long Mian and his powers are based on.
  • Reclusive Artist: In-Universe. He never allows anyone to get near his collection and won't show it to anyone. Understandably, because even his own teammates are disturbed by what his collection entails. However, there are a few exceptions:
    • Jacob ends up sneaking into his collection because no one dares to go near there, making it the best spot for Jacob to hide away from doing missions, much to Long Mian's chagrin, though he relents and allows Jacob to sleep there.
    • Lynn sympathizes with Long Mian's past due to Lynn losing her pet bird Tweety just as how Long Mian lost his dog, and so he doesn't mind if she comes into his collection.
  • Taxidermy Is Creepy: His favorite hobby and everyone else's nightmares. To begin with, when he was a child, he stuffed his own dead dog and slept with it.
  • Taxidermy Terror: His room is specifically filled with these, but he doesn't allow anyone else to come in (because, to him, they can't understand his collection). In fact, he joined with the Shadow Decree because they were somehow more open about his hobby than the Esper Union was.
  • True Art Is Angsty: In-Universe: He believes that frozen Miramon and people have a beauty of their own despite how creepy it is, which started with him stuffing his own dog when he was a child.

"Boooriing, I need to trick someone! Hehehe."

Voiced By: Bindy Coda (English), Yumi Hara (Japanese), Gabin (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Controller

An innocent-looking kid who loves to play pranks on people, twin brother to Xie Chuyi. He is a controller Esper whose attacks can be complemented when his brother is in the same team with him.

  • Soul Dispel deals damage to an enemy based on Xie Yuzhi's ATK, while having a chance to decrease the target's AP. If Xie Chuyi is in the party, Yuzhi will attack two more random targets with the same damage and status effects.
  • Luck in Pairs attacks all enemies twice, dealing damage based on Yuzhi's ATK with a chance of inflicting Stun. When ascended, if Chuyi is in the party, Yuzhi will attack twice more with the same damage and status effects.
  • Heaven Awaits grants SPD Up to the party, and then Yuzhi attacks an enemy twice, dealing damage based on his ATK. The first hit steals some of the target's AP and the second increass the duration of their debuffs. If Chuyi is in the party, he will follow up with Netherworld Hurl.

  • Always Identical Twins: While it's easy to tell the Xie brothers apart thanks to differing colour palettes and personalities, everything aside from that is identical.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He adores playing up his innocent looks in order to prank people.
  • Deadly Prank: At least when he was a child, his pranks and jokes were innocent, and then he started gaining a cynical pleasure in instilling fear on his targets. Upon becoming an Esper, his pranks became increasingly vicious that he's even willing to stab people in the back for the sake of pranking them.
  • Determinator: He won't stop having his fun on any target until he has at least gotten his fun.
  • The Dragon: Alongside his brother, he's this to Jin Yuyao.
  • Evil Twin: While Chuyi is actively malicious, Yuzhi enjoys playing vicious pranks on people, making it two flavors of an evil twin.
  • Hollywood Autism: He's stated to be suffering from some sort of behavioral sickness that makes him very childlike.
  • Horned Humanoid: Just like his brother.
  • Identical Twin Mistake: Implied through his SwiftSpace name, "Not Xie Chuyi".
  • Light Is Not Good: He may be all white, but he's a malicious prankster working for the Shadow Decree.
  • Nightmare Face: He even practiced gestures in order to increase the horror factor of his pranks, even before they became deadly pranks.
  • Older Than They Look: He may look like a young boy, but he and his brother are both 24.
  • Parental Neglect: The most probable reason he craves for attention is because of his wealthy parents being too preocuppied with the family business that caused him and his brother to be neglected, though it affected Yuzhi more than it did to Chuyi.
  • The Prankster: His favorite hobby. He enjoys playing pranks on people (except his brother) by feigning cuteness and innocence.
  • Secretly Wealthy: He and his brother were born from a real estate family in Debia.
  • Sibling Team: The main gimmick behind Yuzhi is if Chuyi is also in the same team so that they can exploit extra effects from their skills. This is also a reference to their powers as the Chinese Heibai Wuchang, which are two deities in charge of escorting the spirits of the dead to the underworld.
  • Slasher Smile: He's even noted to have a face that is the stuff of nightmares. And when he smiles, a dark look comes under the brim of his hat.

"I know what's going on in your head."
Triple Hell General

Voiced By: Madison Brunoelher (English), Yurika Moriyama (Japanese), Gabin (Korean)
Attribute: Flow
Role: Fighter

A twisted young man who doesn't care about anyone else but his brother Xie Yuzhi. He is a fighter Esper whose attacks can be complemented when Xie Yuzhi is in his team.

  • Spirit Dispel attacks an enemy twice, dealing damage based off Chuyi's ATK. Each hit has a chance to inflict Sear. If Xie Yuzhi is in the party, Chuyi deals True Damage based off the enemy's Max HP (capping at a set percentage of Yuzhi's Max HP).
  • Dead End attacks all enemies twice, dealing damage based off Chuyi's ATK while having a chance to inflict SPD Down. When ascended, if Yuzhi is in the party, Chuyi will attack twice more and apply the same status effects.
  • Netherworld Hurl gives Chuyi C. Rate UP and attacks an enemy three times. Each hit does damage based off Chuyi's ATK and inflicts DEF Down. If Yuzhi is in the team, he will use Heaven Awaits right after.

  • Always Identical Twins: While it's easy to tell the Xie brothers apart thanks to differing colour palettes and personalities, everything aside from that is identical.
  • Beneath the Mask: If he needs to judge people better, he will pretend to put on a friendly facade if he has to talk to others.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He is fiercely supportive of his brother Yuzhi due to their Parental Neglect and the fact that Yuzhi is afflicted with a mental condition. However, unlike most examples, this doesn't make him any less of a Jerkass to everyone else.
  • Control Freak: Has the need to always be in control because of his innate hatred of feeling powerless.
  • The Dragon: Alongside his brother, he's this to Jin Yuyao.
  • Evil Twin: While both brothers are working for the Shadow Decree, Chuyi is the more actively malicious of the two. However, his brother's pranks are noted to be vicious in nature, making it two flavors of the same trope.
  • Horned Humanoid: Just like his brother.
  • Identical Twin Mistake: Implied through his SwiftSpace name, "Not Xie Yuzhi".
  • Jerkass: Couldn't care less about anyone but his own brother.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He uses everyone he meets for his own ends and for his brother's sake.
  • Morality Pet: Invoked. He only ever shows his human side to his brother Yuzhi, but that doesn't make him any friendlier with anyone else.
  • Older Than They Look: While he and his brother look like young teenagers, they're actually both 24.
  • Parental Neglect: His parents didn't care about his or his brother's behavior, which led Chuyi to spoil Yuzhi.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: His colour scheme, likely to denote that he's the more twisted one between him and his brother.
  • Secret-Keeper: His malicious plots and strategies are kept away from reaching his brother's ears, preferring Yuzhi to remain an innocent boy.
  • Secretly Wealthy: He and his brother were born from a real estate family in Debia.
  • Sibling Team: The main gimmick behind Chuyi is if Yuzhi is also in the same team so that they can exploit extra effects from their skills. This is also a reference to their powers as the Chinese Heibai Wuchang, which are two deities in charge of escorting the spirits of the dead to the underworld.
  • Sinister Scythe: A large red one that's even taller than he is.
  • The Social Expert: A dark take. He likes observing others and can very quickly arrive to conclusions about them because that's how he's able to later manipulate them to achieve his goals, even if it means betraying them.
  • The Strategist: Due to his high skill of keen observation, he can resolve issues by coming up with the best strategies.

    Jiang Man (Meng Po)

"There is no space in my heart left for anything...but vengeance."
Faded Reverie

Voiced By: Amber Lee Connors (English), Saori Onishi (Japanese), Bi Ju-eon (Korean)
Attribute: Flow
Role: Fighter

An amnesiac, emotionless woman who can only feel fury. She is a fighter Esper who can inflict Netherbloom to cripple foes.

  • Passage damages two random enemies based on Jiang Man’s ATK and marks them with Netherbloom. Netherbloom is a debuff that explodes after a certain amount of attacks, damaging the carrier and two other targets.
  • Flower Paths is a passive ability. When an enemy is afflicted with Netherbloom, they’ll also be poisoned. Jiang Man also has a chance to counterattack if she is attacked by someone afflicted with Netherbloom.
  • Waters of Lethe attacks all enemies, dealing damages based off Jiang Man’s ATK. When ascended, it also inflicts Netherbloom.

  • Birds of a Feather: She and Embla are both amnesiacs who routinely go to take doctor appointments together.
  • Body Horror: She has a spider lily growing out of her left eye, entirely replacing it. And that's without getting to the fact that her chest's and right hand's skeleton can be seen.
  • Death Amnesia: After Fan Liang's death, she was pushed into depression and she drowned herself in the ocean, where she inexplicably revived as an Esper with no memories of her past but with the divine powers of Meng Po; the Chinese goddess of forgetfulness. Meng Po's duty was to ensure that reincarnated souls would forget everything of their previous lives or their time in hell. However, in her case, it led to herself losing her own memories.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She harbors hatred to the Union for being responsible in killing Fan Liang, but it's all her opinion. Fan Liang had volunteered to become an artificial Esper, but he became a Tragic Monster and was put down by Embla protecting Fu Shi. Ironically, Jiang Man should be angry at Hyde for continuing the Artificial Esper Project in the Shadow Decree, and Embla for killing Fan Liang (in self-defense).
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Although she was reborn with Meng Po's divine powers, she was reborn with only her hatred of the Union of her previous life intact.
    • She sees Embla as a friend, despite the fact Embla killed Fan Liang (in self-defense), though Jiang Man's memory loss keeps her in the dark.
  • The Dreaded: She is a merciless assassin that even her own teammates fear her when she fights.
  • Driven to Suicide: She’s tried to drown herself twice. Once was when she was younger and experiencing serious depression, but she was saved by a doctor named Fan Liang, who she fell in love with. But after he died during a covert Union experiment, she relapsed into depression and tried to drown herself again, only to awake with new powers and no memories.
  • Emotionless Girl: Her reincarnation as an Esper caused her to have no emotions, other than the glee she gets from killing Esper Union agents.
  • Flower Motifs: The spider lily is her motif.
  • Foil: To Embla. They’re both Shadow Decree members who gain immense satisfaction from killing, they both have a strong association with red flowers (right down to having one growing in their eye), and they both wound up with amnesia as a result of their powers. In terms of lore, they were both dating researchers involved with the Artificial Esper Project back in the day — Embla’s lover Fu Shi became an Esper and joined the Shadow Decree in an effort to cure Embla’s amnesia, while Jiang Man’s lover Fan Liang was killed by Embla after the experiment turned him into an uncontrollable monster (which wound up being the event that would later lead to Jiang Man’s own Esper transformation and subsequent amnesia).
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Jiang Man" is not exactly a name for a woman, much less so with "Man" tossed in there.
  • Hidden Depths: Somehow, she's a superb drummer, and her one performance helped her to gain fans and took the attention away from an ectastic Jeanne.
  • Kick the Dog: After Fan Liang managed to help her in becoming more cheerful, he perished, and she was pushed back into depression and killed herself, which led to her Traumatic Superpower Awakening.
  • The Lost Lenore: Fan Liang, the doctor who stopped her from killing herself the first time, who she unknowingly fell in love with. He died as a result of a covert experiment done by the Esper Union, and after trying to kill herself a second time, she now barely remembers him due to her amnesia.
  • Parasol of Pain: Her spider lily parasol is her main weapon. Note the fact that the parasol's handle is made of bones.
  • Poisonous Person: She has her own brand of poison in Netherbloom, which deals damage to all foes once the counter goes down to zero by getting hit multiple times. Her passive inflicts the actual poison status on enemies afflicted with Netherbloom. Fittingly, spider lilies are mildly poisonous.
  • Rescue Romance: Fell in love with Fan Liang, the doctor who stopped her from drowning, except she didn’t realize it.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: When she was younger, she was suffocating in desperation and felt powerless, almost taking her own life, until the doctor Fan Liang stopped her from killing herself and began to look after her, which made her become more upbeat and optimistic. Then he died and she killed herself.
  • Revenge: About the only thing she remembers is her hatred for the Esper Union and their involvement in Fan Liang's death in one of the Union's covert experiments.
  • Skeletal Appendage: Her right hand has been stripped to the bone, as has part of her chest.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Averted but then perhaps played straight. She actually has no favorite thing she enjoys (her "Favorite" entry is just "None"), but Lynn's winter stew becomes a favorite of Jiang Man. As it turns out, this is a node to the Chinese goddess Meng Po, who prepared her Meng Po Soup to reincarnated souls to eat in order for them to forget all their memories and burdens of their previous lives.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: As she drowned in the ocean, she revived with Meng Po's powers as an Esper.

"There is a fine line between genius and insanity."

Voiced By: Sheila Williams (English), Rie Kugimiya (Japanese), Yi Sae-ah (Korean)
Attribute: Flow
Role: Fighter

A sociopathic Mad Scientist craving for attention with a penchant for destruction. She is a fighter Esper who thrives on poisoning foes.

  • Scorpion Claw deals damage to an enemy based on Kara's ATK, and has a chance to inflict Diseased.
  • Deadly Toxin is a passive ability that allows Kara's attacks to inflict Poison. When ascended, upon successfully poisoning someone, the Poison will last an extra turn. This can only be done once per target and per turn.
  • Doomstroke deals damage to all enemies based on Kara's ATK and inflicts Diseased.

  • Animal Motifs: The scorpion, which the Egyptian goddess Serket was originally the deification of.
  • Arc Villain:
    • Of the Desperado event, ahead of Djoser, as she's responsible for experimenting and forcing an Esper transformation on Brewster.
    • She's also the main villain of the Dreams Afar event, being the one responsible in trying to abduct the sisters for her experiments.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Girl: She likes being this in order to get attention.
  • Attention Whore: Since she was a child, she does what she can to be the center of attention, which was a misguided set of values by her parents as she was always under the watchful eye of the media. And when Espers began to manifest, she became jealous from losing attention that she tried and succeeded in forcing her own Esper transformation just to become the center of attention again.
  • Ax-Crazy: She's insane (and literally admits to being it), her oufit makes it look like she escaped from an insane asylum, and she doesn't care about getting anyone hurt in her reckless experiments.
  • Driven by Envy: Towards Anesidora. Kara can't stomach being around her and loathes the idea of sharing the glory of research with anyone.
  • Gone Horribly Right: She managed to force her own transformation into an Esper, which only caused her to become even more emotionally unstable when she started getting the attention from all the wrong people.
  • Institutional Apparel: She wears a straitjacket over her outfit.
  • Mad Scientist: On top of her lack of sympathy for anyone caught by her collateral damage, she joined the Shadow Decree due to allowing her more freedom to be herself.
  • Mummy: Adding to her sociopathic attitude, she's wrapped up in bandages, symbolizing her Egyptian Esper powers.
  • Poisonous Person: Her main attribute. Ironically, her powers are based on the Egyptian goddess Serket, who healed venomous stings and bites.
  • Prehensile Hair: Her long hair is shaped like a scorpion's tail, and she uses it to attack (since her arms are stuck in a straitjacket).
  • Recurring Boss: She's the Arc Villain of two events, making her this.
  • The Rival: She considers Anesidora to be her rival due to either being as smart or smarter than herself. It doesn't help that Anesidora's very presence regularly torments her.
  • Skewed Priorities: She forced her own Esper transformation all for the sake of her Attention Whore tendencies.

"The weak look back, the strong forward."

Voiced By: Steven Kelly (English), Jun'ichi Suwabe (Japanese), Choi Hyeon-su (Korean)
Attribute: Inferno
Role: Controller

The commander of the Shadow Decree, formerly a Benevolent Boss from the Esper Union who deserted it in his goal to personally excel better as a person. Sander is a controller Esper who's good at nuking enemies with hard-hitting single-target attacks that delay their turns.

  • Dusts of Mazzar deals damage to an enemy based on Sander's ATK alongside a bonus small percentage per SPD point. It also has a chance of reducing the enemy's AP.
  • Corrosion deals damage to an enemy based on Sander's ATK plus a small bonus per SPD of ATK. It also has a chance of inflicting SPD Down on the target, while giving Sander SPD Up if he lands a critical hit.
  • Sandstorm deals damage to an enemy based on Sander's ATK, plus an additional small attack bonus per SPD. It also has a chance to reduce the target's AP, and when ascended, the final hit will stun the target.

  • Animal Motifs: Allegedly a dog, which is defined by the Egyptian god Set(h). It's unclear what animal Set is supposed to be, though it vaguely resembles a tall-eared dog with an arrow-like tail (the tail which his Badass Longcoat has).
  • Arc Villain: Invoked. While he appears as the last line of defense in the Dreams Afar event, his role is simply to stop the Fatum Sisters from escaping. Kara is still the main Arc Villain of the event for having considerably more presence than him.
  • Artwork and Game Graphics Segregation: He's got a black, darker appearance in his art mugshot (shown here), though his in-game model differs much more by giving him dark blue fur for his body and white fur around his chin.
  • Badass Longcoat: It's got Spikes of Villainy and a golden tail hanging from the tailcoat.
  • Beast Man: He's some sort of giant dog man.
  • Beneath the Mask: It's incredibly difficult to tell what he feels due to his very reserved nature, though much of the reason is because he fears his true self will show through.
  • Benevolent Boss: Formerly one for the Esper Union, especially to Falken, whom Sander taught a lot to and even paid all his debts out of pure kindness.
  • Cleavage Window: It prominently shows off his chest due to having a really wide window running across.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Due to his powers deriving from the Egyptian god Set.
  • Evil Counterpart: To his former friend Falken, who is also a commander but in the Esper Union. Fittingly, Horus was depicted as the opponent to Set. They even share a voice actor!
  • Face–Heel Turn: Played somewhat straight. He used to be a commander within the Esper Union but he quit and joined the Shadow Decree because it offered him a "better view" of the world and granted him a better position to excel as a person. The change in factions not only made Sander villainous, but he became extremely jaded from his former Benevolent Boss attitude, mocking the very idea of "heroes."
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Was a rural farm boy and then later became the intimidating Shadow Decree commander (although between those times, he was a very Benevolent Boss for the Esper Union).
  • Glass Cannon: Despite being a Controller, he can deal massive damage due to how his Speed stat scales with damage. He can prevent enemies from taking turns while whittling their health. With that said he doesn't take too kindly getting damaged.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: Cigars are his favorite things and are perhaps the only things that make him smile while smoking.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Like Freddy, he eventually enjoys looking out after his hair, though he says it's to "keep an image."
  • Ironic Echo: Compare his second profile line with Falken's:
Sander: A grain of sand can't escape the whirlwind.
Falken: An eagle wouldn't tolerate a grain of sand in its eye.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though he is with the Shadow Decree to excel as an individual, he shows a caring side of him when looking out after a kitten he saves from stray cats and forces himself to adopt it. Cue the food courier wondering why he's ordering a lot of cat food and other items for cats.
  • Meaningful Name: Sander, whose powers are derived from sand.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Invoked and perhaps played straight. His summoning animation has him appearing while sitting on a very sophisticated Egyptian-looking throne. Played straight when he appears at the end of the story mode, looking up at a Miracle.
  • Perpetual Frowner: You'll never see him smiling once. The only other expression you'll see from him is an angry scowl while baring his fangs.
  • Pet the Dog: Or Pet the Cat, it seems. In his fourth bounty story, he adopts a cat and saves it from Kara's experiments. He even asks for the most expensive cat food in the pet store.
  • Rags to Riches: He was born in an impoverished rural community and lived in a rundown farmhouse. His drive to excel as an individual is what prompted him to become richer and stronger.
  • Screw Destiny: Seemingly unsatisfied of his humble beginnings, he took fate in his own hands to reshape it in his liking.
  • Self-Made Man: From a farmer into the intimidating strategist commander of the Shadow Decree.
  • The Strategist: Noted to be an incredibly tactical individual.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: His patience is often tested by the ineptitude of some of his comrades within Shadow Decree.
  • True Companions: He was once close friends with Falken, which was one of the few good things in his life. He even paid Falken's debts which the grateful Falken repaid by working harder. However, Sander abandoned his friendship once he left the Esper Union and joined the Shadow Decree.

"Hurt my family and I will destroy you, whatever the cost."

Voiced By: Timothy French (English), Takayuki Ishii (Japanese), Park Sang-hoon (Korean)
Attribute: Inferno
Role: Defender

A hulking bull who was once a happy family man. He is a defender Esper who relies on his high defenses to stack multiple hits to dish out damage and heal himself.

  • Brutalizer attacks an enemy. It deals damage equal to a mix of Djoser's ATK and DEF, and dispells a debuff from Djoser.
  • Eternal Strength is a passive ability. Using certain abilities gives Djoser a stack of Bull Rage, which increases his DEF and Resistance by a small amount. When Bull Rage is active, his attacks will also inflict Diseased and can't be resisted. He can have up to ten stacks of Bull Rage at a time, and if he is hit with a debuff that isn't incapacitating, there's a chance to consume a stack of Bull Rage to ignore it. When this ability is ascended, Djoser gets a stack of Bull Rage whenever he attacks.
  • Burning Roar attacks an enemy, dealing damage equal to a mix of Djoser's ATK and DEF, while having a chance to inflict DEF Down. Djoser will also gain five stacks of Bull Rage upon using this ability.

  • Animal Motifs: The bull, which represents the Egyptian god Atum. His name is also derived from the Egyptian pharaoh Djoser of the 3rd Dynasty.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Desperado event, being responsible for the abduction of Espers and Lu Yi.
  • Beast Man: He's a giant bull man, who was presumably a normal human until the death of his wife triggered his transformation.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Though his profile notes that he's a kind man, in the Desperado event, none of these facts show up as he acts as a dangerous criminal.
  • Despair Event Horizon: He faced two events: his wife's passing after giving birth to their daughter, and later on his daughter succumbing to her illness.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The death of his daughter caused him to unleash all his rage upon the Esper Union as a way to let his emotions loose, even though they were never involved with him at all. This aligns with Atum, known as the destroyer of the world.
  • A Father to His Men: Any time he leads a mission, rookies and veterans alike in the Shadow Decree look forward to following him due to his high charisma.
  • Freudian Excuse: The tragic death of his wife and daughter led to his descent into a life of crime.
  • Meaningful Name: "Djoser" alludes to the same Egyptian pharaoh of the 3rd Dynasty. His Esper power is derived from Atum, an Egyptian god.
  • Supreme Chef: He knows all the ins and outs of cooking that it's thanks to it that he's grown to be a healthy, muscular bull. He's so good at it that the same dishes he eats every day have variations to them so he never gets bored of them. Furthermore, cooking is his favorite pasttime, as he used to cook for his family and brings him peace of mind.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: He's a large bull man. Even his profile makes mention of his large muscles in his shoulders and biceps.
  • Token Good Teammate: Partially played straight and averted. He really is just a nice man under his rough exterior, but he's too deep into his crimes in Grandis to atone for his many crimes for the sake of his family.
  • Tragic Villain: After the death of his wife, he was so desperate to look for a treatment for his daughter that he joined the Shadow Decree to save her. Unfortunately, it was All for Nothing.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: When his wife died, he became so distraught that it triggered his transformation into an Esper.

    Anesidora (Pandora)

"Interesting, I'll just adjust my formula next time."
Wiccan's Eve

Voiced By: Dana Weddle (English), Rin Kusumi (Japanese), Yi Sae-ah (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Controller

A former Union scientist who joined the Shadow Decree once her mentor Hyde himself defected from the Union as well. She is a controller Esper who can inflict all foes with her unique Pandora's Box ailment.

  • Prodigious Talent deals damage to an enemy based on a mix of Anesidora's ATK and max HP. It also has a chance to inflict ATK Down.
  • Doom Box attacks an enemy twice, dealing damage based on a mix of Anesidora's ATK and max HP. Each hit has a chance to dispell a buff from the target, and, when ascended, will also trigger Pandora's Box if the target is carrying it and stun them.
  • Gift of the Gods grants SPD Up to the whole party, while inflicting the enmy team with Pandora's Box, which will remove a certain percentage of their current AP after each turn and inflict SPD Down. Anesidora will also get a second turn.

  • Admiring the Abomination: She thinks Miramon are cute.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Dusk & Dawn event. However, she's not the Big Bad. She was supplying the Big Bad with Esper serum and Divine Wave devices, but the Big Bad started to misuse them for their own personal gain.
  • Bald of Evil: She's one of the most unethical scientists of the Shadow Decree, and she's bald under her hood.
  • For Science!: Her main motivation to do anything related to science stems from her belief that science should never be restricted in any way. Sadly for others, this means becoming her test subjects.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Hoo boy. This woman has caused a lot of chaos:
    • She's the one who experimented on Joe (Q's friend) and essentially killed him due to being incompatible with the experiment.
    • Next, she turned every single member of Berenice's Moon Eye group into disposable brainwashed kamikaze cannon fodder.
    • Then, her biggest act was her experimentation on Sieg (Brynn's friend) and forced him to become a Super Esper.
    • Then there's the ambiguity in regards to Lynn's act of vengeance, as her profile notes that Anesidora's appearance was "coincidental."
  • Mad Scientist: Though she displayed incredible progress as a scientist, the Union's rules made her feel suffocated and discouraged her need to really go all the way. Once she deserted the group with Hyde, they both joined the Shadow Decree to get the freedom they wanted.
  • Public Domain Artifact: The briefcase she carries is the representation of the box that the Greek woman Pandora opened, who was tempted and tricked to open the box that unleashed horrors upon the world.
  • Red Right Hand: Her left arm is far larger and more monstrous than her right one. Knowing how she operates, if it wasn't caused by her Esper transformation, then she almost certainly did it to herself.
  • Sweet Tooth: She likes sweets. She's anything but sweet, though.

    Nicole (Nephthys)

"Intrigued by my research? *chuckles* Ahh, I'm flattered."

Voiced By: Alexa Tuttle (English), Yuna Ogata (Japanese), Lee Saet-byeol (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Support

A cold and calculating researcher who will do whatever it takes to see her experiments completed. Formerly a researcher working for House Ramses. She is a support Esper who can provide invincibility and other buffs to her allies, especially with her unique Soul Guard buff.

  • Spiral Strike deals damage to an enemy based on a mix of Nicole's ATK and Max HP. Also has a chance to inflict Sear.
  • Dead Man’s Protection grants Soul Guard to an ally. Soul Guard sends a percentage of any damage the ally takes to Nicole until either Nicole dies or the buff wears off. If the ally dies, they are immediately revived with a percentage of their HP. When this ability is ascended, Nicole will grant Standoff and Recovery to the ally upon their revival.
  • Spinning Wrap deals damage to all enemies based on Nicole’s Max HP. It also grants DEF Up and Invincibility to the entire party, as well as granting Soul Guard to the ally with the lowest HP.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Lone Star event, being the main culprit sending controlled Miramon upon Debia.
  • Berserk Button: If her summoning animation is anything to go by, she hates baseless gossip. She even destroys her own phone for it.
  • Blow You Away: Her main element, which alludes to the Egyptian goddess of air Nephthys.
  • For Science!: Like every other shady researcher in the Shadow Decree, she is completely devoted to her own research that it's pretty much everything she'll ever focus.
  • Law Versus Chaos: Zigzagged. Ultimately, she believes that science is neither good or evil; only an individual's actions using it is judged, and that such evil people need to be punished. After the incident with House Ramses, the Shadow Decree simply gave her the best funding with no restrictions. Regardless (and ironically), she's still a villain for providing the evil organization with dangerous inventions.
  • Mad Scientist: Ollie seems to think this of her, outright calling her insane when he learns that she turned her back on House Ramses and joined the Shadow Decree.
  • Revenge: She has it against House Ramses: Ollie's mother had died during a lab incident involving the Artificial Guardian Project. This caused his father to end the project immediately, which was already nearing completion. Nicole, furious, retired from the project, but she still continued working on it in the shadows and employed Leon to assassinate all of House Ramses's members in relatiation to ensure no one but her knew about the project's existence.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Lateef Ramses' wife was killed in a lab accident, Nicole was more focused on the fact that Lateef planned to shut down her research rather than the fact that someone was dead.
  • The Sociopath: She cares very little about social interaction and couldn't frankly care less about anyone else. She tries her best not to cause any problems with others, because otherwise that would take time away from her research.
  • Workaholic: She’s dedicated to her research and only her research. If one of her coworkers tries to talk to her about something else, she’ll just nod and pretend to listen until they leave.

    Catherine (Hela)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/catherine_hela.png
"Death can relieve all suffering."

Voiced By: Alanna Reece (English), Haruna Kuramoto (Japanese), Lee Sae-byeok (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Support

A creepy handmaiden of death who wishes to engulf everything in darkness. She is a powerful support that can save her teammates in a pinch and cleanse them of debuffs.

  • Nightfall Grief attacks an enemy twice, with each hit dealing damage based on Catherine's ATK and having a change to inflict Miss Rate Up.
  • Bone Pass is a passive skill that cleanses one debuff from each ally at the start of each turn and grants an AP bonus to all allies per debuff absorbed.
  • Underworld Presence attacks all enemies, dealing damage based off Catherine's ATK and granting Standoff to her allies. Standoff ensures they will retain at least 1 HP. When ascended, if an ally dies while the ability is on cooldown, the cooldown instantly resets.

  • Anti-Debuff: Her passive skill cleanses debuffs for her team and turns it into bonus AP.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Bloody Hunt event tale.
  • Birthday Hater: She never celebrates her birthday due to reminding her of her parental abandomnent and awful childhood as an orphan. Despite this, Hall barely manages to convince her to take a fairy tale book he bought for her and will attempt to do better for her next birthday even if she despises it. Though she only reads the fairy tale book because she secretly liked the witch villain in it.
  • The Cynic: She believes that the world is full of malice, pain and suffering and that it won't be able to understand her fear. She also doesn't understand how someone would be optimistic in such word, hence why she detests Bardon and his positivity.
  • Dark Is Evil: As the representation of the Asgardian goddess of death Hela.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Though she wishes to instill fear and darkness over others, she herself fears how no one can understand her own fears and insecurities.
    • Though Hela is depicted as the daughter of Loki, she causes problems to the Graywater Bounty Hunter's Guild, of which Triki - Loki's representation - is the leader of.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She has short dark hair under her veil and very pale skin that matches with her skeletal attire, her status as the Esper of the Norse goddess of death, and her desire to instill fear into others. She even got mistaken for a ghost once.
  • Freudian Excuse: Catherine was an orphan who was bullied extensively. After becoming an Esper, she ended up being a bully herself which serves as a cover for her weakness that she'll refuse to admit.
  • Last Chance Hit Point: Underworld Presence grants Standoff to all her allies. Standoff ensures they will retain at least 1 HP.
  • Lean and Mean: She's into morbid stuff, is very negative, and is very lean. It turns out that she lacks healthy eating and can be sometimes spotted taking vitamins to make up for the fact she doesn't eat the right stuff, much to Lynn's chagrin.
  • Mistaken for Undead: Late at night at the training grounds, she gets mistaken for a ghost with red eyes and red bones after failing a mission due to Bardon interfering, so she takes it out on Freddy and his subordinates (because her own subordinates babbled about her at the training ground to Freddy's subordinates, who passed on the info to Freddy, who ordered her to look into the matter, which pissed her off because her orders reached him first before she was supposed to know first) by locking Freddy at the training grounds. He loses it and destroys the door beyond recognition.
  • Mundane Solution: Her floating crown causes many door frames to get weathered down and eventually fall, sometimes on other people, and makes the Shadow Decree pay for many door frame repair bills. Tang Yun points out that everything would be solved if Catherine would just not wear her crown...but instead, she decides to make every door frame taller just to defend the use of her crown. Cue Leon suggesting the same solution, only to get brushed off.
  • Orphanage of Fear: She lived in one that led her to becoming a Troubled Abuser willing to hurt children.
  • Prone to Sunburn: Invoked. She dislikes sunlight and is always said to take on night missions to avoid going out during the day. If she's forced to take on day missions, she'll stick to the shade and very rarely go out into the sunlight.
  • The Rival: To Bardon, whom she finds intolerable for his bright optimism.
  • Sadist: She prefers to slowly torture foes to instill fear in them rather than killing them immediately.
  • Tranquil Fury: Implying that she's not scary makes her respond quietly with rage.
  • Troubled Abuser: She was a victim of abuse at her orphanage, but instead of solving her emotions, she became deranged with power once she became an Esper and became an abuser to orphans herself.
  • Unusual Halo: Catherine has a bright crimson halo floating above her head that has five large, long spikes alongside much smaller and shorter spikes which gives the halo a crown-like appearance. This fits in the divine nature of Catherine and adds to her eerie appearance as the representation of the Norse goddess of death.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Due to becoming mad by her abusive childhood, she finds glee in killing children, which she did to Zora's orphanage while also murdering her mentor.

    Bonnie (Eris)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bonnie_3.png
"I won't tolerate anything from anyone."

Voiced By: Aimee Smith (English), Yuka Amemiya (Japanese), Kim Seo-yoon (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Controller

A rebellious girl who grew up on the streets, which shaped her to be wild and impulsive. Sister to Lewis. She's a controller Esper who can dispel foes' buffs and increase their ability cooldown counts.

  • Dark Kiss attacks an enemy twice, dealing damage based on Bonnie's ATK. Each hit has a chance of stealing some of the target's AP.
  • Misfortuned attack an enemy four times, dealing damage based on Bonnie's ATK. Each hit has a chance to stun the target.
  • Disputational attacks all enemies, dealing damage based on Bonnie's ATK. Each enemy has one buff dispelled from them, and there's also a chance to dispell a second one. Each buff dispelled gives all allies some AP. When ascended, all enemy cooldowns are increased by one turn.

  • Always Second Best: To her chagrin, Ophelia is a far better scythe-wielder than she is.
  • Cain and Abel: She's the Cain to her brother's Abel. In some Greek stories, it is believed that Eris was Ares's sister.
  • Hidden Depths: Though she may look like a little red devil with a short temper, she does have girlish hobbies like eating cakes, and she has a soft spot for her partner Li Ao.
  • Horned Humanoid: Her Esper transformation gave her two little devil horns.
  • Rebellious Spirit: She's defined as a rebellious girl who hates her brother Lewis for joining the Esper Union. Her Esper powers fittingly represent the Greek goddess (or personified spirit) Eris, who represented strife, discord, contention, and rivalry.
  • Sinister Scythe: She wields a large red scythe, which is taller than herself.
  • Sweet Tooth: Her favorite dessert is cream-filled cakes, so much a rumor about her standing in line for five hours to try out a limited edition cake trended online.

    Uday (Sopdet)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uday.png
"Hold on! Let me grab my umbrella! Hey, you! Let's look at the stars tonight!"

Voiced By: Kerri Kane (English), Yuri Fujishiro (Japanese), Kim Yi-seo (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Support

A stargazer and former Marshall whose Chronic Hero Syndrome tendency earned her unwanted criticism and caused her to doubt her wish to help people. She is a support Esper who can buff and dispel in different ways.

  • Star Bubble deals damage to an enemy based on Uday's ATK. It has a chance to inflict SPD Down, and when ascended, gives an AP increase to a random ally.
  • Sirius' Ward grants Absorb and Shield to a selected ally.
  • Galactic Wave deals damage to all enemies based on Uday's ATK. It also dispells two debuffs from each ally and grants them ATK Up.

  • Broken Bird: Though she worked hard to be a hero to people, she had the misfortune of saving the wrong people, who either caused harm to others or even reprimanded her for no good reason. This caused her to believe that not everyone deserves to be saved, and so she has decided to save those who deserve to be saved and leave the rest alone.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: She used to help anyone in need, but her wish to help became undone when she was criticized by the very people she risked her life for. Now, she only saves those who deserve to be saved.
  • The Confidant: Due to her many good traits, she's a trusted confidante in the Shadow Decree.
  • Cosmic Motifs: She's associated with constellations and stargazing. She's particularly linked to the star Sirius, since Sopdet was a representation of the same star.
  • Horrorscope: When she reads her horoscope and learns she must avoid people who are Taurus, she avoids being around Lynn. However, it turns out her horoscope was right, because she almost got a stomache had she tried to eat Lynn's weird lemon cake which got offered to Li Ao and got sick for it. When she's forced into a trio with Lynn and Li Ao, she's relieved to know that Djoser replaced Li Ao, until she almost gets sliced by Djoser's axe...and realizes Djoser is also Taurus.
  • Parasol of Prettiness: Her main weapon, which grants her some Parasol Parachute.
  • Token Good Teammate: Can you really, really believe this well-meaning young girl who gives kindness, empathy, comfort, and support and never once has taken a life works for the Shadow Decree?
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Not her, but the people she saved during the Hazlit incident reprimanded her even while she was wounded for saving them.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hyde_hades.png
"Eternal solitude? Sounds ideal."

Voiced By: Bart Flynn (English), Toshihiko Seki (Japanese), Park Sang-hoon (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Fighter

One of the Esper Seven who were the first to awaken to Esper powers. A lonely but creepy lab researcher unconcerned for life outside his lab, formerly a member of the Esper Union before founding the Shadow Decree as one of its four councilors. He is a fighter Esper whose endurance helps him in dispatching foes, and can use his unique passive to increase his attack, resist damage, and even revive himself.

  • Underworld Curse attacks an enemy twice. Each hit does damage based off Hyde's ATK and steals a buff from the target. It also reduces the target's Max HP based on the damage of the attack.
  • Reaper is a passive ability. Hyde is immune to both buffs and debuffs, and takes less damage from all sources. Every time someone on the field attempts to buff or debuff him, he gains a stack of Breath of the Deep, and if an ally dies, he gets ten stacks of Breath of the Deep. Each stack of Breath of the Deep increases Hyde's ATK, and he gains damage reduction for every ten stacks; he can have up to fifty stacks of Breath of the Deep. The first time Hyde takes a fatal hit, he will survive, and store a percentage of his Max HP for each stack of Breath of the Deep he has.
  • Cerberus attacks all enemies, dealing damage based on Hyde's ATK and stealing one buff from each of them. When ascended, Hyde will be healed by a set percentage of the damage done.

  • Back from the Dead: Can survive fatal damage once if he's knocked down.
  • Dark Is Evil: Modeled after Hades, the Greek god of the dead and king of the underworld.
  • The Dreaded: If he's busy in his lab, no one close to him even dares to disturb him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He's an ammoral researcher, and yet he's appalled at Kara's recklessness in her experiments.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Professor Pritzker, who stopped Hyde's research when it started to become morally ambiguous and dangerous.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Was once part of the Esper Union, until Hannah's death shifted his research into dangerous territory that Pritzker had to stop him, making him join the Shadow Decree.
  • For Science!: Prefers strongly that his research is completed, no matter how many lives he has to lose in his path.
  • Heroic BSoD: At least heroic when he was with the Union, the death of Gaius's fiancée Hannah shook Hyde to his core, and he convinced himself to stop feeling emotions for people in order to do his dangerous research. This led him to pushing the Artificial Esper Project as a test that the Union held.
  • Karma Houdini: His hand on Fan Liang's accidental death should have made Jiang Man hate him for it, more so when he continued the Artificial Esper Project. However, Hyde feels no remorse over this, and Jiang Man conveniently became an amnesiac, so Hyde can't be blamed.
  • Mad Scientist: He came to an understanding that actions based on emotions are one of humanity's greatest flaws, and so has come to the conclusion that his inhumane research is the path to the future.
  • Mighty Glacier: Hyde's combat style revolves around enduring as much damage as he can so that his Breath of the Deep passive skill is fully stacked (up to 50 stacks) to dish out as much damage as possible while also permanently reducing his foes' maximum HP. Many players like giving him relics with lifesteal and counterattack effects so that he can last much longer and become stronger at the same time.
  • Morality Pet: Has one in Anesidora, his student, who supported him when he left the Union. Still, he is very uncaring to anyone else.
  • No-Sell: Due to his Reaper passive ability, he is immune to debuffs. However, he's also immune to buffs other than his Breath of the Deep buff, which draws power from buffs and debuffs he receives.
  • Pet Monstrosity: His three-headed guard dog, which represents Cerberus, the monstrous watchdog of the underworld from Greek mythology.
  • Order Versus Chaos: Was once Order-aligned before going Chaos-aligned, as his current beliefs tell him that the Shadow Decree is free of rules and regulations necessary to find salvation from extinction.
  • Serious Business: His lab research is so important to him that he doesn't care about anything or anyone else, down to his mismatched pair of socks.

    Ophelia (Thanatos)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ophelia_sprite_3.png
"When my last day comes, I'll gladly run for it."

Voiced By: Madison Brunoelher (English), Yuna Ogata (Japanese), Kim Yea-lim (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Fighter

An emotionless woman who left the Esper Union after the death of her boyfriend Yassin. She is a fighter Esper who can deal multiple blows as long as she's got enough buffs and/or the enemy has enough debuffs.

  • Elegant Strike attacks an enemy, dealing damage based on Ophelia's ATK. It also inflicts Bleed.
  • Heartless Reaper attacks an enemy, dealing damage based on Ophelia's ATK. Each buff on Ophelia and each debuff on her target increases the damage by a set percentage. This ability also heals Ophelia for a percentage of the damage dealt, and she gets either an extra turn if she kills her target or a shield if she doesn't.
  • Butterfly Dreams attacks an enemy, dealing damage based on a large percentage of Ophelia's ATK. Ophelia will follow up this attack with Elegant Strike pursuit attacks. The number of these attacks is based on the combined total of her buffs and her target's debuffs. If her target dies, she will attack a different target a set number of times, and each pursuit attack on the same target does slightly less damage than the previous one. For the first hit on each new target, she will inflict DEF Down.

  • 1000 Origami Cranes: Doing origami is her favorite hobby, believing that the ones she burns with her powers will reach out to Yassin in the afterlife if she burns enough of them.
  • Animal Motifs: The butterfly, which is related to Thanatos.
  • Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: Her whole motif and appearance, which allows her flight.
  • Cleavage Window: Hers goes low enough to see the complete sides of her breasts.
  • Emotionless Girl: Upon the death of her boyfriend, she shut off her emotions and became very distant.
  • Face–Heel Turn: The death of her boyfriend Yassin convinced her to desert the Union when she learned from the people he saved that Luo Yan personally ordered Yassin to fulfill the mission no matter the cost, which infuriated Ophelia so much that it also triggered her Start of Darkness by going completely against the Union. She was so furious that she even used her best friend Everett for her plans.
  • I Work Alone: The majority of the time, she prefers to be all by herself, though she's capable of handling things on her own and will lend a hand when needed.
  • It's Personal: She has a vendetta towards Luo Yan of the Esper Union, because she believes that he's the one responsible for the death of her boyfriend, Yassin.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her cold disposition, she can be nice in her own way. She pretended to be a Demon Lord and humored a little kid being left alone to wander in an abandoned building by his jerkish friends so that he'd find courage to stand up to them.
  • Lethal Chef: At home, she was discouraged from cooking and believed her family just didn't want her to cook because she was awful, though Bai Liuli believed that they didn't want her to get injured starting out as a cook. Then Bai Liuli finds out the hard way that Ophelia not only can't cook, but she can accidentally destroy the whole kitchen.
  • Memento MacGuffin: She carries around a wooden butterfly carved by her late boyfriend, which has their names etched in the wings.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Bonnie's Red Oni.
  • Sinister Scythe: One that's even larger than she is. What makes her scythe much more different than the rest of the scythe-wielders in the Shadow Decree is that hers seems to be alive.
  • Tranquil Fury: She detests soap operas no matter their quality so much that she doesn't mind turning off the TV if someone else is watching one nearby. Her dislike for them reminds her of her dead boyfriend, believing that fate gave her a tragic end rather than a happy ending in her own "soap opera."
  • Vapor Wear: Her chest is completely bare under her open jacket.

    Mateo (Prometheus)

"Ha! There is no one else to believe in but me."

Voiced By: Daniel Van Thomas (English), Yusuke Katsura (Japanese), Im Chae-bin (Korean)
Attribute: Wind
Role: Fighter

A former commander who was in charge of Utgard's Raine's Wall, he took drastic decisions for the city's well-being. He is a fighter Esper who can exploit his unique Spark buff to enhance his attack power.

  • Mateo has a unique buff and debuff at his disposal. They are...
    • Eternal Flame, his buff. For every stack, he gains ATK and takes less damage. When he sustains a critical hit, he loses two stacks. Maximum stacks is twenty.
    • Spark, his debuff. When an enemy with Spark takes a critical hit, Mateo gains AP and deals extra damage to the target. This extra damage is based on Mateo's ATK, and it won't miss, land a critical hit, or trigger an Elemental Boon.
  • Blast Burn attacks an enemy twice, dealing damage based on Mateo's ATK. Each hit has a chance of dispelling an enemy buff, and the target is inflicted with Spark.
  • Fire Pillar attacks an enemy twice, dealing damage based on Mateo's ATK. This ability inflicts Diseased and DEF Down, and each point of Mateo's SPD lets this attack deal extra damage. When ascended, if the target has Spark, Mateo gains five stacks of Eternal Flame.
  • Fire Punch gives Mateo three stacks of Eternal Flame and his target Spark. Then, Mateo attacks the target three times, dealing damage based on his ATK. Each hit steals a buff from the target, and Mateo gains three stacks of Eteral Flame upon stealing a buff. Each point of Mateo's SPD lets this attack deal extra damage, and Mateo gains an extra stack of Eternal Flame when getting healed.

  • Body Horror: He's able to set his right eye on fire at will.
  • The Cynic: Contrasting his former partner Xuan Pin, Mateo believed that some sacrifices had to be made to ensure Utgard's safety. Then Nicholas went overboard with this and tricked Mateo all to gain the public's favor to have a better shot at winning the presidential election.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He's the protagonist of the Immortal Flame event, which tells the tale of how he helped defend Raine's Wall before joining the Shadow Decree.
  • Determinator: His debut trailer shows him fighting and enduring a harsh battle against Miramon.
  • A Father to His Men: He greatly cared about his own soldiers and lost it when his Childhood Friend decided to let them die just to have better chances in the Utgard presidential race through showcasing the Divine Wall at the "best" time possible (getting soldiers and protesters killed).
  • Foil: To Xuan Pin. While Mateo is The Cynic, Xuan Pin is The Idealist.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Raised to be an elite, and grew up to be a military commander willing to fight until the end to protect his home from Miramon.
  • Playing with Fire: Despite being a Wind Esper, his left arm is perpetually on fire dure to his powers, and all of his attacks are fire based. This is in line with Prometheus, who is most known for stealing fire from the Olympians and giving it to mortals.
  • Rich Bitch: A subverted male example. Mateo was raised to be an elite, and his first career bio notes how he only enjoys the finest things in life. He's also noted to have "snobbish and self-centered behaviour", and his voice lines make it evident that he's got quite the ego too. The subversion is shown in Immortal Fire; despite his reputation, he was A Father to His Men and greatly cared for Utgard's safety. Even though he left Utgard to join the Shadow Decree after the events of Immortal Fire, he did so out of a desire to end Utgard's Miramon crisis for good, and while he did take some risks he's never portrayed as an outright villain.
  • Rule of Symbolism: While we occasionally see him drawing energy from the giant concrete block he carries around, the game doesn't say what the block is, what it does, or why Mateo has it. It's likely a nod to Prometheus' infamous punishment of being chained to a rock and having his liver eaten daily by an eagle, although Mateo hasn't been seen around any eagles just yet.
  • Token Good Teammate: Downplayed. While he's not on the level of Uday or Lynn, he's still not as villainous as the rest of the Shadow Decree, being more of a cynical Anti-Hero.
  • Vigilante Man: Murdered his Childhood Friend Nicholas when the latter revealed his selfish reasons to use the Divine Wall, had Mateo's men slaughtered by stalling for time to use the wall's new feature at the "right" time once the Miramon could break through and slaughter his protesters, and even tried to take Xuan Pin down by wrongfully accusing her of working with the Shadow Decree out of pure jealousy for her close ties with Mateo. Mateo believed he did the right thing, because having a selfish man like Nicholas to be the president of Utgard would have meant far more human losses after the stunt he tried to pull to ensure he would control the populace with fear.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: In the second story mode, a brief shot of Xuan Pin's realistic drawings features him shirtless while lifting a heavy barbell. Nobody comments on that, being amazed that she's an extremely good artist (then again, this drawing is quickly browsed through).

The Hidden Shadow Councilor (MASSIVE SPOILERS)

Gaius (Zeus)

"Mayor Abigail, you almost outplayed me in this game. But have you ever heard of a scheme called...brute force? A power the likes of which the world has never seen. It's the most effective scheme there is, impossible to counter."

Voiced By: Adam Riley (English), Takeo Ōtsuka (Japanese), Seok Seung-hoon (Korean)
Attribute: Flow
Role: Fighter

One of the founders of the Esper Union and member of the Original Esper Seven who were the first people to gain Esper powers in Grandis, a living legend devoted to stopping the threats the Miracles bring. He turns out to be one of the four councilors within the Shadow Decree, aiming to create a world for just Espers.

(Tropes pertaining Gaius's Esper Union info can be found here.)

  • Big Bad: For the second story mode, aiming to take down the player as they're a living lock capable of shutting down the Miracle Nexus from granting divinity and the ability to make wishes come true, at the expense of losing one's humanity.
  • Face–Heel Turn: It's unclear when he defected to the Shadow Decree, but it's implied that he's been a member for them for quite some time.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Though not done right away as to avoid an Interface Spoiler, his alliance to the Shadow Decree was updated a few months later.
  • The Mole: Since the very beginning, he's the one trying to take down the player, leaking information of his movements to the Shadow Decree. His actions also caused the player to take too long to put trust in others, specifically Sachiko.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: His aim is to create a world of Espers while getting rid of all of humanity, even if he was more than happy to lose his humanity and become a monster for it.
  • The Worf Effect: He doesn't get to be the Final Boss due to a transformed and crazed Sachiko punching him out and away from the Miracle Nexus.

    Chu Yao (Taiyi)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chuyao.png
"When all is chaos...I...will rule."

Voiced By: Jhovany Vazquez (English), Daiki Sagawa (Japanese), Baek Jong-hoon (Korean)
Attribute: Flow
Role: Fighter

One of the four Shadow Councilors and heir of the Chu family, and a former member of the Esper Union. He seeks to make a world of Espers, seeing everyone else as a weakling. He is a fighter Esper who can amplify a target's damage taken and reduce damage dealt through his unique Calamity debuff while granting an ally Spirit Aegis.

  • Chu Yao has two status effects at his disposal.
    • His Spirit Aegis buff reduces its carrier's chance of taking critical hits drastically. When the carrier is hit, both they and Chu Yao have a buff dispelled from them, and Chu Yao's AP is increased. Once per two turns after taking action, Chu Yao will attack all enemies twice, dealing damage based on his Max HP and extending enemy debuffs by one turn. For every debuff his targets have, the final hit's damage will be increased.
    • His Calamity debuff increases the damage that an ability's final hit will do to the carrier, while decreasing the damage that the final hit of the carrier's abilities will do in return. Five debuffs on the carrier triggers the maximum effect of this ability.
  • Sacrifical Rite deals damage to an enemy twice based on Chu Yao's Max HP, then calls in an ally with Spirit Aegis to preform an assist attack. When ascended, he also inflicts Sear and DEF Down.
  • Divine Invocation gives Spirit Aegis to the ally with the highest ATK at the start of combat. Chu Yao's ability effects won't miss, and if his ACC is equal to or higher than his target's, a critical hit is guaranteed.
  • Time of Strife dispells three buffs from each enemy, and then inflicts Sear, DEF Down, and Calamity (although he cannot inflict Calamity on bosses). Then, he attacks all enemies three times. dealing damage based on his Max HP.

  • Body Horror: Besides the fact his chest has a black hole, the lower end of his spine is also torn open (and stitched).
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: His divine power only works when even a small sliver of belief in it exists. And when he gets others to believe in it, he's also able to brainwash them for a while, which can cause them to forget about their sudden belief when they come to.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He appears in Items of Fate as Ren Xian's ally, secretly leading Yu Xu and Su Jue into a trap.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He's been previously mentioned in other Esper entries before his debut (he's Raven's former friend, Cecilia's mentor, and the one who recruited Uday into the Shadow Decree).
  • Frozen Face: His face is always in an eerie, blank expression that doesn't seem to move.
  • Graceful Loser: Once the flaw of his power is revealed, he commends Su Jue on being able to see through it and isn't desperate to get a win, unlike Ren Xian. On the other hand, he doesn't want to admit to Raven that people he saw as weak managed to beat him in his plot.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Due to his upbringing as a believer who was closer to the gods than all other believers, his family's tutelage made him keep his distance with others.
  • Older Than They Look: He's pretty youthful looking for a 37-year-old.
  • Only Friend: Raven was the only person he considered to be his friend, which broke down his status as a loner. But when she lost her eye defending other people (or, weaklings, in his eyes), it caused him to go back to his old ways in an effort to teach her that his way of thinking is right.
  • Preacher Man: As a shaman, and the inheritor of the Chu family.
  • Secret Identity: He doesn't hide his status as the heir of the Chu family, but as an Esper and Shadow Councilor, going by the name Chu Yi and attributing his Esper powers to his family's witchcraft. It's through this identity that he's able to lure Su Jue and Yu Xu into a trap set by Ren Xian.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: His perpetual shirtlessness does a good job of showing off the aforementioned black hole embedded in his chest.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: As his powers are fueled by people's belief in them, they have no effect when no belief is given to them, which Su Jue exploits to get out of the trap he and Ren Xian set to kill Yu Ran.

    Jin Yuyao (Queen Mother)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jin_yuyao_queen_mother.png
"Plunder and destruction, those are my fortes."

Voiced By: Madison Brunoelher (English), Yuu Ayase (Japanese), Lee Myung-hee (Korean)
Attribute: Inferno
Role: Support

An extremely ruthless businesswoman on her path to revenge. She is a support Esper who can transfer all status ailments from her entire party to one target.

  • Blood Talisman deals damage to an enemy based on Jin Yuyao's ATK, while also having a chance to stun the target. When ascended, if the target has a debuff, Yuyao will gain some AP.
  • Abode of Immortals is a passive ability that makes Yuyao immune to disabling effects. At the start of her turn, Yuyao will dispel one debuff from each of her allies (excluding Immobilization) and heal them for a percentage of their max HP. Once per turn, when an ally gets a debuff, she will increase her own AP.
  • Mount Kunlun's Rage deals damage to an enemy based on Yuyao's max HP, and transfers all ally debuffs to the target. It will also dispell all buffs from the target, and upon successful dispelling, reduces their AP.

  • Action Initiative: Her main battle gimmick is letting her allies take hits while her AP-increasing passive allows her turn to come faster in order to act sooner.
  • Animal Motifs: The tiger, which the Queen Mother was represented with tiger teeth.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Ruler's Law event, where she seeks to take her revenge on Abigail.
  • The Dragon: It turns out that she herself has a mysterious boss, who saves her and the Xin brothers from being taken to prison.
  • The Dreaded: She's either seen as a harsh, profiteering industrialist, or an idol to be worshipped and praised by her minions.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: The white of her eyes is completely black, next to get tiger-looking orange pupils.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Her motif revolves around the Chinese mother goddess Queen Mother Wang Mu Niang Niang, who was originally presented with the teeth of a tiger (hence Jin's tiger centaur look) and as a goddess who brought plague and natural disaster.
  • Greed: It took one acquisition of a Nexus Crystal that kickstarted her bright corporate future and her ruthlessness towards mercenaries and bounty hunters.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: She has the centaur body, but it's that of a tiger instead of a horse, referencing Queen Mother's tiger teeth.
  • Paper Fan of Doom: Her weapon of choice, which can split up into several enchanted floating daggers.
  • Revenge: She seeks to have her revenge on Abigail Saunbert, her one ally who took advantage of Yuyao's family's company's devalued holdings by seizing their remaining assets instead of helping her family out. She only joined the Shadow Decree to accomplish her revenge once they had proved themselves as a genuine independent power after the Burning of the Union.
  • Rock Theme Naming: The three characters that make up her name in Chinese mean “gold”, “jade”, and “mother-of-pearl”.
  • Unexplained Accent: Her name and her Esper powers imply her to be Chinese, but for whatever reason her accent is instead vaguely European. This is especially strange since she's one of the only Chinese Espers to have a noticable accent to begin with.

    Embla (Ymir)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/embla.png
"Only destruction can make me feel alive."

Voiced By: Luci Christian (English), Kiyoka Suko (Japanese), Jang Mi (Korean)
Attribute: Inferno
Role: Fighter

One of the Esper Seven, the first people to become Espers in Grandis. A former Union member who deserted to the Shadow Decree and became one of its four concilors. Only destruction can make her feel alive. She is a fighter Esper who can deal massive damage to foes depending on her unique debuff Corrupted Seed.

  • Embla has a unique debuff called Corrupted Seed. When the carrier is hit by an attack, they get a stack of the debuff. When an ally attacks them after this happens, there's a chance to inflict Diseased on the carrier, and one of the attacker's debuffs is dispelled. When Corrupted Seed is detonated, each stack deals damage based on Embla's ATK and inflicts Bleed. The detonation can occur when the debuff is ended early, or automatically if the carrier either reaches the maximum amount of stacks (eight) or dies. Auto detonation deals maximum stack damage, removes the debuff from the carrier and gives it to two of their allies. When the debuff disappears, Embla gains AP so long as she's still alive.
  • Tattered Sword deals damage to an enemy based on Embla's ATK. If the target does not have Corrupted Seed, they get it, and if they do have it, Embla preforms a pursuit attack on a random enemy.
  • Chaotic Thrust attacks an enemy twice and deals damage based on Embla's ATK. Each hit steals a buff from the target, and the last hit detonates any stacks of Corrupted Seed the target has. When ascended, after detonanting the target's Corrupted Seed stacks, another enemy gets infected with it.
  • Desolate Flower attacks an enemy multiple times, dealing damage based on Embla's ATK. Each hit has a chance to inflict DEF Down. This attack inflicts Corrupted Seed.

  • Awful Truth: The incident at the Cube Miracle with Dong Mei: it hadn't been Miramon who wounded Dong Mei, but rather Embla herself, who became lost using her powers and fatally wounded Dong Mei when the latter tried to talk to her out of her quiet state. The wound Embla inflicted in Dong Mei was so bad that it left a deep scar from her torso to her hip, rendering her unable to walk anymore.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Embla is inherently a nice person. It's her Esper powers that made her into a ruthless killing machine.
  • Battle Couple: If Fu Shi is in the same team as her, his passive Thick Haze triggers that turns their relation into this (even though Embla currently has no memory of her love for him).
  • Birds of a Feather: She and Jiang Man are both amnesiacs who routinely go to take doctor appointments together.
  • Body Horror: She has a flower growing in place of her right eye, as well as several more growing out of her stomach. That's without mentioning the fact she draws her sword from her abdomen.
  • Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: Red butterflies give her a motif to her destructive powers.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Stars in the Dream of Redemption event, which details her fall from grace from being an Esper Union member to her eventual alliance to the Shadow Decree.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Her job as a counselor for the Shadow Decree is implied to be horrible for the people she gives counsel to. For one, she's really not a people's person, and so she convinces Elaine that a romantically-smitten guy was trying to kill her in a duel until Elaine makes a fool out of herself when she scares him good.
  • The Dreaded: Among the Shadow Decree members, she's of course frightening to be with. It doesn't help that she's socially unnerving when she attempts to socialize.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During the last scenes of Dream of Redemption, she decides to tap into her Esper powers one more time to save Fu Shi from a crazed Fan Lian, knowing that doing so would make her lose her memories for good. She accepts the outcome because at least Fu Shi will be alive.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: She suffers from bouts of short-term memory loss that started after the incident at the Cube Miracle. Hyde speculates that it's because she hasn't completely assimilated into her Esper powers, suggesting her not to use them to keep herself sane. By the time of her debut proper, she has completely forgotten everything about her past life and became an empty shell thirsty for destruction, and she constantly has to be reminded through Fu Shi or the diary she keeps to remember events that just happened recently.
  • The Lost Lenore: Subverted. By the end of Dream of Redemption, it’s revealed that not only did Fu Shi desert the Union with Hyde and become an Esper in the process, but that Embla using her powers again completely wiped her memory, including everything she had ever done with her beloved Fu Shi. Fu Shi’s desperation to find a way to get Embla’s memories back is what made him join the Shadow Decree, making her (or rather her old self) the Lenore to him.
  • Scars Are Forever: Due to her Esper powers, she sports a nasty scar that runs across her face around her eyes.
  • Something about a Rose: She's related to blooming roses. Like Jiang Man, the flowers give her a sinister look.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pudding. It's hard to see this dreadful-looking woman dropping everything just to eat it.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her decision to kill Fan Liang after the Artificial Esper Project turns him into a monster is ultimately what causes Jiang Man to relapse into depression and try to drown herself again, which turns her into an Esper but wipes her memories, ironically getting treated by Hyde, who was the one who pushed for the experiment that caused all the tragedy.
  • The Virus: Her Corrupted Seed debuff can become this when it detonates and spreads the effects to other random allies. As long as Embla is alive and it's in play and detonated, the debuff can continue triggering.

    Hailey (Hephaestus)

"I'm so bored... I guess I'll invent something new."
Click for her original appearance

Voiced By: Nola Klop (English), Toa Yukinari (Japanese), Kim Si-woo (Korean)
Attribute: Inferno Note
Role: Defender

An inventor from the Shadow Decree who uses Espers' divine power to create many inventions, friend to Hilda. She first appeared in Warm Winter before being made playable in Winter Warmth.

  • Hailey has two unique status effects. They are...
    • Smelting Mastery, a buff. This buff allows a teammate to gain the effects of the equipment set Hailey currently has equipped (unless the ally has the same set on them).
    • Molten Hot, a debuff. Enemies effected by this debuff have their equipment set effects disabled. If the enemy is a non-player unit, they get their ATK and DEF lowered instead. Hailey herself is immune to this.
  • Clankin' Away deals damage to an enemy based on Hailey's ATK and DEF and inflicts DEF Down. When ascended, it also inflicts Molten Hot.
  • Flaming Forge deals damage to all enemies based on Hailey's DEF, and extra damage based on the target's Max HP. Hailey will heal herself for a portion of the damage dealt.
  • Soul of a Smithy deals damage to all enemies based on Hailey's ATK and DEF, and inflicts Molten Hot and Sear. She also gives Smelting Mastery to the ally who both has the highest ATK and doesn't have the buff already.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Specifically the leg. Her right leg is a prosthetic, and she explains in Warm Winter that she lost her real leg in an accident some time after the Miracles descended.
  • Big Bad Friend: She's friends with Hilda (a wanderer who likes to help people with arranging funerals), but it's Hailey who's part of the villanous Shadow Decree. However, both of them really couldn't care any less about Hailey's alliance that they both like to hang out together anyway. It helps that Hailey is very carefree.
  • Bungling Inventor: She likes to create a lot of inventions using Espers' divine power, wields a giant hammer for smithing, and is equipped with a forge's suit. All this references the Greek god Hephaestus, who was known as the god of artisans, blacksmiths, carpenters, craftsmen, fire, metallurgy, metalworking, sculpture, and volcanoes.
  • Continuity Nod: The version she became playable in, Winter Warmth, is almost identical in name to the version she first appeared in, Warm Winter.
  • Death Seeker: Though she's not excited to die in battle, she couldn't care any less about the world and the threat of the Miracles due to being tired about life itself. All that has her focus is tinkering with her inventions.
  • Deuteragonist: She's this for most of the Warm Winter event.
  • Fiery Redhead: Subverted. She has a head of ginger hair and wields fire in battle, but she has a very lax demeanor and often sounds like she's bored when she's not fighting.
  • Nice Girl: Even though she had a falling out with Sasha, Hailey went out of her way to save her at a protest march where a subway was about to be derailed until Hailey herself repaired the subway tracks and prevented an accident there, though it's said that Hailey was injured and had to stay a week at a hospital. In the end, however, Hailey gave Sasha documents and photos she took at the scene to show her she was in the wrong before cutting all ties with her.
  • No Item Use for You: Downplayed. Her unique debuff Molten Hot disables the set effect of the equipment that her targets have equipped, though not the effects of the individual equipment pieces.
  • Playing with Fire: As the Esper of Hephaestus, the Greek god of the forge, she uses a lot of this in battle and in her own smithing. Her attribute for her playable debut is appropriately Inferno, although it used to be Shimmer.
  • Promoted to Playable: Technically, Hailey was playable for two battles in Warm Winter as a Guest-Star Party Member, but she didn't join the playable roster until Winter Warmth came out.
  • That Woman Is Dead: Non-villainous example. With Hilda's help, she arranges a funeral for herself on how she used to be before her falling out with her best friend Sasha.
  • We Used to Be Friends: She and Sasha used to be friends, until Hailey had her Transformation, which caused Sasha to abhor her because she hated Espers and had joined an anti-Esper organization in Tangton.

Fu Shi (Suan Ni) (UNMARKED Dream of Redemption SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fu_shi_suan_ni.png
"Embla... I guess it was all a dream."
Click for his human self

Voiced By: Josh Portillo (English), Jun Endo (Japanese), Han Hojin (Korean)
Attribute: Inferno
Role: Defender

Embla's fiance who worked for the Union's Logistics department. He is revealed to have become the Esper of Suan Ni, mythical son of the Dragon King, after defecting to the Shadow Decree, and is now devoted to finding a way to regain Embla's lost memories. He is a Defender Esper whose Smokescreen buff makes him a good tank, and whose passive ability is designed to work with his beloved Embla.

  • Fu Shi has two buffs at his disposal. They are...
    • Smokescreen, which increases his DEF and DMG Mitigation as well as healing him when he does damage and increasing his healing amount. He can have up to five stacks, and they will not be removed in subsequent rounds of a fight.
    • Dispersal, which does everything that Smokescreen does, but with the added bonus of using Fogbreaker as a pursuit attack when he uses Billowing Strike.
  • Billowing Strike deals damage to an enemy based on Fu Shi's ATK and DEF and gives him a stack of Smokescreen.
  • Thick Haze is a passive ability. Fu Shi gains five stacks of Smokescreen at the start of a round, and as long as he has five stacks he is immune to all forms of control. The meat of this ability comes from when him and Embla are on the same team; in PvP modes, Embla cannot die so long as Fu Shi is alive, and the effect is cleared permanently when Fu Shi dies. In all game modes, when Embla actively uses her basic attack, Fu Shi follows up with his basic attack and vice versa. Attached to this ability is an attack called Fogbreaker, where Fu Shi deals damage to an enemy based on his ATK and DEF, ignores enemy shields, and gains a stack of Smokescreen.
  • Eightfold Mistletoe deals damage to an enemy multiple times based on Fu Shi's ATK and DEF, and can only be used when Fu Shi has five stacks of Smokescreen. After attacking, he consumes all of his Smokescreen stacks and gains Dispersal instead. This ability's cooldown cannot be manipulated, and when ascended, the attacks ignores enemy shields and cannot miss.

  • Affably Evil: During Devouring Beast, he attempts to present himself as a trustworthy "pharmaceutist" to Liam to help him get rid of his Esper transformation, but this is all just a ruse to treat him as a disposable guinea pig.
  • Animal Motifs: His human appearance hinted at the Chinese lion, as lions in Chinese culture are depicted with curly fur.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Devouring Beast event, manipulating Liam's condition to treat him as a guinea pig to uncover a method to aid Embla.
  • Battle Couple: His passive Thick Haze is designed to turn him and Embla into one, as it allows them to use their basic abilities in tandem while outright preventing Embla from dying in PvP modes like Point War and Beatbout as long as he's alive.
  • Beast Man: His Esper appearance changes him into a Chinese lion.
  • Deuteragonist:
    • Of the Dream of Redemption event. Notably, he gets his own side episodes despite being an unplayable character.
    • Becomes this again in Mists of Memory, as he's involved with the Tangton Anomaly event.
  • Bittersweet Ending: In Mists of Memory, while he's unsuccessful in making a serum that can reverse Esper transformation, he's able to create a serum that stops Esper Sync Rate from rising up, which brings hope that he may be able to create the right serum, he's able to smile at last, and he seems to consider Fumitsuki a friend. In the meantime, Embla vaguely shows some signs that she still remembers Fu Shi after saving him from being killed by one of Ren Xian's subordinates... On the other hand, the two of them are Shadow Decree members, so it's unclear if Fu Shi will continue with his amoral research.
  • Devoted to You: His love for Embla is incredibly strong that not even her forgetting him was enough to keep him from pinning after her.
  • Face–Heel Turn: It turns out he deserted the Union with Hyde all for the sake of bringing the amnesiac Embla back to her old self.
  • False Friend: He attempted to be a benefactor for Liam by treating him with a serum, but he fed him lies about the times when Liam went on rampages to trick Liam into thinking the treatment was slowly working, when in fact Fu Shi was just gathering data.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: As his lion Esper form, his eyes have a very intricate lion design. When he's smiling, they even glow.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He was known as a "lovestruck fanatic" for his wish for Embla to love him when it took her a long while to finally admit her feelings for him.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: When he was a human, he had a strong desire to become an Esper himself so that he could be close to Embla and protect her in her missions that he enlisted himself in the Artificial Esper Project in hopes of becoming one. Ironically, he triggered his transformation on his own.
  • Irony: He sought to become an Esper through the Artificial Esper Project. He seemingly triggers a slow transformation into one on his own free will before becoming one by the present. Then his main role is Defender; manifested through his strong desire to protect Embla.
  • Patience Plot: It took him a long while for Embla to finally reciprocate her feelings for him but he had all the patience of the world until she'd say it, and then he awaits the day Embla may recover her lost memories and remains romantically loyal to her. No matter how many times Embla forgets about what she's done before, he always patiently remains by her side to remind her. Fittingly, Suan Ni was known for its patience and was chosen for it by Buddha.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Since coming to the Shadow Decree, all of his colleagues have never seen him smile once. The closest anyone has gotten a positive reaction out of him was nodding.
  • Promoted to Playable: After being introduced all the way back in Dream of Redemption, he finally makes his playable debut in Mists of Memory.
  • Rescue Romance: When Estero Harbor had been destroyed, Embla rescued him. Immediately, as she pulled him from the rubble, Fu Shi fell in love with her that he ignored the part he was injured (though she didn't fall in love with him until later).
  • Shrine to the Fallen: He makes a surprise appearance in Sea of Song where he has been secretly putting roses at the Estero Harbor monument as a symbol to where he had first met Embla during his Rescue Romance and the fact she lost her sense of self to her Esper powers.
  • The Reveal: By the time Hyde proposes to desert the Union, the last shot of Fu Shi shows his eyes glowing with Esper powers before his eventual Esper transformation.
  • Token Good Teammate: Though this may be subject to change, he's not exactly inherently evil for joining the Shadow Decree, but he was convinced by Hyde to do so from the earliest point because Hyde promised him that the Artificial Esper Project may be the way to restore Embla's memories. By the time of Devouring Beast, he has more or less become an amoral scientist willing to let Liam injure citizens for the sake of research data.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He used to be a "lovestruck fanatic" who devoted his whole time trying to woo Embla and was rather reckless in how he tried to show his love for her. Once she became amnesiac due to her Esper powers, Fu Shi would slowly achieve his own Transformation and became a(n amoral and dangerous) scientist within the Shadow Decree.
  • The Unfought: Think you'll fight him in Devouring Beast? Nope. He just sics a Nova Miramon and flees.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: After Embla had accidentally pushed him to the floor and he said he sprained his ankle, she expresses her worries for him before he admits he made it up just to confirm she did worry about him despite her objections.

    Cecilia (Isis)

"Those rubies definitely match my outfit."

Voiced By: Alanna Reece (English), Haruna Kuramoto (Japanese), Lee Myung-hee (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Support

A high-ranking member of the Shadow Decree, supporting and even reviving her allies with powerful healing spells. Despite her healing powers, she remains cold and indifferent towards other people.

  • Gemstone Feathers deals damage to an enemy based on her ATK and a certain amount of her Max HP, while also healing herself and the ally with the lowest HP for a portion of the damage dealt.
  • Crimson Protection revives and heals all fallen allies, healing them based on the individual character's Max HP and increasing their AP. All allies receive a shield as well as a smaller AP boost. This ability's cooldown cannot be manipulated. When ascended, this skill automatically triggers upon Cecilia's death, as long as it is not on cooldown.
  • Ruby Coronet dispels all ally debuffs and heals all allies based on their individual Max HP. Also grants every ally Immunity for one turn.

  • Auto-Revive: Her skill Crimson Protection used to exclusively work like this, as it was a passive ability before update 3.1.7. Following the update, it is also possible to activate this skill manually, though it still triggers upon Cecilia's death (given it is not on cooldown).
  • Combat Medic: All of her skills heal either her allies or herself.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After Chu Yao came into her life, she slowly started to let her walls down.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Her hair covers her eyes.
  • The Fashionista: As made clear by her idle quote. Her second idle quote has her voice the wish to go shopping.
  • Gemstone Motifs: Strongly associated with rubies.
  • Hair Wings: Her hairstyle doubles as a set of four wings that she’s able to fly with.
  • Out of Focus: She’s the only Legendary Shadow Decree Esper who has not made an appearance in any major story or event thus far.
  • Screw Destiny: Zig-Zagged. Part of her lore states that "she now controls her own destiny" and make decisions for herself. However, her absolute loyalty to Chu Yao would suggest that she obeys him without question, relying her own decisions to Chu Yao and him only. Defeating the purpose of her own statement.
Cecilia Gacha Introduction: "Surrender to fate? You know, I am the ruler of my own destiny."

    Jiang Jiuli (Chiyou)

"They call me the berserker. You know what that means."

Voiced By: Gerardo Nunez (English), Toshiki Iwasawa (Japanese), Kim Jin-hong (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Fighter

A member of the Shadow Decree blessed with Chiyou's power, granting him incredible strength and a berserker's temper should he be under too much pressure. To avoid this, he practices meditation and other ways to remain calm.

  • Sky Smash consumes a certain amount of Jiang Jiuli's HP to deal damage to one enemy, based on his ATK. He inflicts Sear and deals extra True Damage based on the HP he loses.
  • Demon Reborn is a passive ability that makes Jiang Jiuli take a portion of any single-target damage dealt to an ally, while increasing his base SPD, ATK, and DEF for every certain portion of his Max HP he loses. Upon taking lethal damage, Jiang Jiuli enters Demon Mode for 2 turns instead of dying, removing all of his buffs and debuffs, restoring his HP, and granting him Standoff. While in Demon Mode, his base SPD, ATK and DEF increase significantly, and his SPD will no longer exceed whoever's SPD is the highest on the field. Before taking ability damage, he gains a shield, and he'll also inflict True Damage based on his Max HP after dealing damage. This ability's cooldown cannot be manipulated. When ascended, attacks in Demon Mode restore his HP by a certain amount of damage dealt.
  • Earth Shatter consumes a certain amount of Jiang Jiuli's HP to deal damage to all enemies, and inflicts Taunt on each of them. He deals extra True Damage based on the HP he loses.

  • Accidental Murder: He accidentally murdered his family during his seven year long rampage. This caused him to desire vengeance against Esper Union because they failed to stop him in time.
  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: When he goes berserk, he has no recollection of his time while on a rampage. What's worse is that he has no control over himself in this state.
  • The Berserker: Obviously, both in game and in lore.
  • Blessed with Suck: As an Esper he is blessed by a mythological/god-like figure, specifically Chi You. While the Esper transformation gives him a monstrous appearance, super strength, and an axe made out of a spine, he uncontrollably goes berserk every time he is slightly stressed out which is a major inconvenience and a source of his struggles.
  • The Brute: He is a 6 and a half foot tall beast of pure muscle.
  • Chained by Fashion: He wears a long chain attached to a shackle around his neck.
  • Death Seeker: Due to his own powers, he desires death because he can no longer live a normal life after becoming an Esper. His mental health took a heavy blow when he accidentally killed his family during a seven year long rampage.
  • Desires Prison Life: He willingly turned himself in to the Esper Union because he can no longer manage his berserker state. He is imprisoned through an artificially-induced slumber, but unfortunately it doesn't work and went on a rampage for seven years before eventually "waking" up.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: He wants vengeance against the Esper Union simply because they failed to keep him contained and not go berserk. It's not really their fault that he's a 6 and a half foot tall beast blessed by a bull demon god.
  • Gentle Giant: In the Origami Love update and the corresponding event, he was a kind-hearted and level-headed teammate to Ophelia and Zhong Nan. He is aware of his god-given temper and tries his best to avoid that state outside of his work.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Jiang Jiuli will go berserk at the slightest provocation. Not his fault though, it came with his god-given powers and has no control over it.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He is repeatedly fawned over by fans due to his... meaty appearance. Never mind the fact that he's a raging demon bull.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: Well there's a reason why the Esper Union cannot subdue him at all. As an Esper, his muscular strength is enhanced by otherworldly "divine power" that courses through his body. And whether he likes it or not, his power will cause destruction eventually.
  • Power Incontinence: If Jiang Jiuli is stressed out ever so slightly, his powers will activate and goes on a rampage beyond his will.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are perpetually red in color regardless if he's in a normal state or berserker state. You shouldn't go near him anyways, he might go berserk anytime.
  • Savage Spiked Weapons: To emphasize his demonic berserker state, he wields a spiked club as his weapon of choice.

    Toland (Tezcatlipoca)

"Why trust in fate when you can trust in me?"

Voiced By: Jhovany Vasquez (English), Nobuyuki Tokeshi (Japanese), Kim Jung-min (Korean)
Attribute: Shimmer
Role: Controller

One of Embla's subordinates. Toland is a chaos-loving Shadow Instructor who enjoys stirring trouble and making a mockery of fate. He is a Controller Esper who uses his unique debuffs to mess with his foes.

  • Toland has a few unique status effects. They are...
    • Trackback, a buff that increases his SPD and can stack up to three times.
    • Final Passage, a debuff that decreases the holder's SPD, ATK, and DEF while increasing their Miss Rate. If Toland dies when this effect wears off, he is revived with a small amount of HP and given Invincibility and Absorb.
    • Zero Hour, a debuff that incapacitates the target and prevents them from being selected, attacked, buffed or debuffed. This effect expires when every enemy except the holder is dead.
  • Bonds of Fate deals damage to an enemy based on Toland's ATK. He steals a buff from the target and inflicts Taunt.
  • Paid in Full is a passive ability. Toland gains three stacks of Trackback at the start of combat, and another after each turn that isn't his own. Once per fight, if Toland dies, his killer has all their buffs dispelled and is inflicted with Final Passage.
  • Point of Origin deals damage to an enemy based on Toland's ATK. He inflicts Zero Hour on his target (unless they're a boss) and consumes all stacks of Trackback. He then launches a pursuit attack with Bonds of Fate for every stack of Trackback consumed, hitting random targets and prioritizing different ones. When ascended, his iniital target gets their buffs dispelled.

  • Arc Villain: He is the antagonist of Cellblock Chaos.
  • Camera Abuse: Shoots the camera guy in his Esper Profile video, causing them to fall to the ground.
  • Cowboy: His outfit and Aztec influences make him resemble a vaquero, or Mexican cowboy. This makes a good deal of sense, as Indigenous Mexican vaqueros predate the American cowboy by several centuries.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Downplayed as it's not his primary power, but thanks to his patron deity, Toland is incredibly good at molding and manipulating obsidian, and he especially enjoys making sculptures out of it. This enters Chekhov's Hobby territory in Cellblock Chaos, where he makes up a fake story about a pet bunny to get Amber to deliver him an obsidian bunny statue out of pity, which he then shapes into a lockpick to unlock his restraints and escape his cell.
  • Finger Gun: Shapes his tendrils into a giant one in the animation for Point of Origin, before firing it with his actual gun.
  • Floating Limbs: Zig-zagged. His gloved hands look detached from his wrists by default, but his prison attire from Cellblock Chaos and his Divinate art give him normal hands.
  • The Gadfly: Enjoys riling people up and stirring chaos whenever he can. One of his favorite things in his Esper profile is even "picking fights for fun".
  • The Gunslinger: In a world where everyone uses fantasical weapons and powers, Toland's weapon of choice is a simple revolver.
  • Slasher Smile: Constantly sporting a wide, sinister grin.
