Company Cross References / Disney

Go To

As one of the largest media conglomerates in the world, it's no surprise that Disney likes to reference to its own works within its own works. A lot. They also own ABC, ESPN, The Muppets, Pixar, Marvel Comics, Lucasfilm, and most of the Fox-related assets such as 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, and Fox and related television stations, many of which have gotten in on the cross-references as well (and are thus lumped into this subpage). You can imagine how hectic that gets.

    Films
  • 102 Dalmatians: Kevin and Chloe's dogs see the famous Spaghetti Kiss in Lady and the Tramp, via a VHS copy of it.
  • In Air Buddies (2006), when the Buddies are at the drive-in movie, 101 Dalmatians is playing.
  • Aladdin series:
    • Aladdin: The Genie Knows Jack Nicholson, so of course he also knows other Disney characters:
      • When Aladdin promises Genie that he'll use his third wish to free him, Genie believes he's lying and promptly turns his head into Pinocchio's, complete with growing nose.
      • When searching a book for a spell that will turn Aladdin into a prince, he mentions "Alaskan King Crab" and gets his finger snapped from inside the book by Sebastian, complete with the first few bars of "Under the Sea" playing.
      • The Beast is one of the Sultan's toy animals.
      • When trying to coax a depressed Aladdin into freeing him, Genie says to him as "When You Wish Upon a Star" starts to play...
Genie: Aladdin, you just won the heart of the princess! What are you going to do next?note
(Aladdin doesn't listen and drops onto a pillow)
Genie: Hey, your line is "I'm going to free the genie." (beat) Any time.
      • At the end, the newly-free Genie prepares to see the world and dons a tourist getup, complete with a Disneyland Goofy hat. Doubles as an Actor Allusion, as Robin Williams wore that same outfit for the short film Return to Neverland.
    • Aladdin: The Return of Jafar: Genie turns into a set of animatronics and sings the line ""it's a small world" after all!" as a way of explaining why he's returned from his intended world tour so soon. Then when he releases the protagonists from the dungeon, he chants "Bippity-boppity-boo!"
    • Aladdin and the King of Thieves: Among Genie's impersonations are several characters from other Disney films, such as Tinkerbell, Pocahontas, Pumbaa, and the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse.
Genie: [as Pumbaa] Hakuna matata! [as himself] Whoa. Talk about an out-of-movie experience.
  • Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day: Celia's teacher calls Anthony "Wreck-It Ralph" after he knocks over the school's trophy cases.
  • In Alice in Wonderland (2010), the scene where the Jabberwock appears bears a striking resemblance to Chernabog emerging from the mountain in Fantasia.
  • Bedtime Stories (2008):
  • In Bolt, Blake (one of the Los Angeles pigeons) cross references Pixar when he says, "Don't freak out. This is how you blew it with Nemo."
  • In Brave, Merida's archery style, including her winning tournament shot, is patterned off that of Disney's own Robin Hood.
  • A Bug's Life: Flik says the Toy Story quote "To infinity and beyond!" in one of the outtakes.
  • Cars series:
    • In the entire series, Lightning McQueen has Lightyear brand tires, which on top of being a pun on the real-life tire brand Goodyear, is a reference to Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story.
    • Cars:
      • The biggest race sponsor is Dinoco, which is the brand of the gas station seen in Toy Story.
      • During the end credits, Mack watches several car versions of previous Pixar films at a drive-in theater, specifically Toy Car Story, Monster Trucks, Inc., and A Bug's Life. This scene doubles as an Actor Allusion as the scenes shown here feature characters voiced by John Ratzenberger, who voices Mack in this movie.
      • The first thing Mater says to Lightning McQueen is "Mornin', Sleepin' Beauty!" Disney had dealt with Sleeping Beauty once before, in 1959, by adapting it into a film.
    • Cars 2:
      • A drive-in marquee appears at one point mentioning a film titled The Incredimobiles.
      • In Paris, a restaurant called Gastow's is seen, referencing Gusteau's from Ratatouille.
    • In Cars 3, a shelf in Sterling's office has Cinderella's carriage on it.
  • Chicken Little:
    • In the opening, while Buck Cluck tries to figure out a way to start the story, he uses a familiar sunrise before discarding it.

  • Classic Disney Shorts: At the beginning of Soup's On, as Donald is preparing dinner, he sings "Zippity-Doo-Dah".
  • Coco:
    • Three to Toy Story; an emo skeleton is seen wearing the shirt that Sid from the first Toy Story wears, the Pizza Planet truck appears when Miguel is introducing Elena, and Miguel runs past pinatas of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.
    • With the Woody and Buzz Lightyear pinatas is also a pinata of Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc.
  • Elemental (2023):
    • The movie has several posters that parody previous Pixar films.
      • This one features Gale Cumulus in a parody of WALL•E called "Wind-E", as a pun on the fact that she's a wind elemental. The background is colored blue, similarly to much of the promotional art for Wall-E.
      • This one features Wade in front of a grass background and a logo reading "Wave", in reference to Brave.
      • This one with Clod, an earth elemental, has a logo in the background reading "Soil" in the same font as the logo for Soul.
      • This one showing Ember with a school student name tag is a spoof of Turning Red, with the student name tag being similar to the one Mei wears and a logo for "Burning Red" in the corner, a pun on how Ember is a fire woman.
    • In the film proper, Ember and Wade go to a movie theater with a poster for a movie called "The Good Element" on the outside, referencing the Pixar movie The Good Dinosaur.
  • Encanto:
  • Early on in Escape to Witch Mountain, Tony, Tia and the rest of the kids at the orphanage go to a movie theater to watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. note

    • A driver near the end of Finding Dory has a bandage of Lightning McQueen from Cars on his right hand, also serving as production foreshadowing for Cars 3.
  • Flora and Ulysses showcases several Marvel Comics superheroes. Also, The Imperial March from Star Wars is used as Flora's house's doorbell chime.
  • Frozen franchise:
    • Frozen: Rapunzel and Eugene are seen in the crowd entering the castle when the gates are opened.
    • Frozen II:
      • In the prologue with a young Anna and Elsa playing with snow figurines, two of them look like Baymax and Dumbo.
      • During the game of charades, Olaf acts out "mouse", which he conveys by imitating Mickey Mouse, complete with the distinctive ears and nose, as well as Mickey's most famous pose.
      • Young Agnarr says he's reading a book by "some Danish author" implying Hans Christian Andersen. It's confirmed when you can see the book in question has a silhouette of the famous image from The Little Mermaid's poster of Ariel sitting on a rock surrounded by water.
      • During "When I Am Older", Olaf wanders into a rather dark part of the forest where eyes glare out at him from the shadows, and it's eerily reminiscent of Snow White's trek through the forest in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
      • During the post-credits scene, Olaf recounts his revival by sitting up with arms forward and saying "I live," which mimics a scene in Mulan where Mushu combines the same line and pose.
  • George of the Jungle:
  • A Goofy Movie series:
  • The Great Mouse Detective: One of the toys in the toy shop resembles Dumbo.

    • "It's a Small World" is played in one scene.

  • Honey, I Shrunk the Kids:
    • The original shrink ray's display seems evocative of the digitizing laser's in TRON (and the equipment is even tested on a piece of fruit).
    • The scientist that tells Szalinski not to be discouraged after his failed presentation is named Dr. Brainard after The Absent-Minded Professor.
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame:
    • "Out There" has references to no less than three previous Disney movies. Fellow France native Belle is seen strolling along reading yet another book, Pumbaa is shown being carried through the street on a stick, and the Magic Carpet is draped over a man's arm. In addition, Jafar's old man disguise appears for a slapstick gag in the climax.
    • Clopin's animator noticed how similar the music for "Court of Miracles" was to Dukas' L'apprenti sorcier (best known for its use in Fantasia), that at one point, he had Clopin dance and lift with his robe like Mickey. This melodic similarity is probably what led Alan Menken to change the melody for the song in the theatrical adaptation.
    • One can hear the Goofy yell at one point during the film.
  • The Incredibles: Talking about Bob being unable to get over his Glory Days and paying to hide evidence that he and his family are superheroes, Rick spews out "money, money, money, money, money", a quote from the first Toy Story.
  • Incredibles 2: The Pizza Planet Truck from Toy Story can be seen outside the building where Elastigirl captures and rescues the fake Screenslaver. The truck likely belonged to him considering Evelyn revealed the one she set up was a pizza delivery guy.
  • Inside Out:
    • When Joy and Sadness pass through Imagination Land, among the things that can be seen is a board game called "Find Me" which has a cartoon Nemo on it.
    • The Brazilian Portuguese dub changes Sadness's line about finding a movie where a dog dies funny so that she says "Remember the funny movie where the lion cub's father dies?" instead.
  • The Jungle Book (1967): Near the end of the film, Bagheera delivers a eulogy to the apparently dead Baloo as a somber organ music plays. Surprisingly, the background music is a Grief Song and a shout-out to "Chorale for Snow White" from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
  • In The Jungle Book 2, when Kaa gets pelted with prickly pears, the end result ends up looking suspiciously like he's wearing a Mickey Mouse disguise.
  • Lilo & Stitch:
    • Nani has a Mulan poster in her room.
    • Lilo has a toy of Dumbo in her room as well.
    • Teaser trailers for the film had Stitch barging in and ruining various iconic scenes from other Disney movies, as a way of saying "This ain't your mama's Disney movie!"
  • The Lion King (1994):
  • The Lion King (2019) has a few references that weren't in the original:
  • In The Lion King 1 ½, a myriad of other Disney characters appear near the end of the film at the cinema, specifically: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; Belle, the Beast, Mrs. Potts and Chip; The Genie, Aladdin and Jasmine riding on Carpet; Lady and Tramp; Hyacinth Hippo; Stitch; The Mad Hatter; Rabbit (from Winnie the Pooh); Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and The Lost Boys; Quasimodo and the gargoyles; Pocahontas; Dumbo; Terk; Mowgli and Baloo; Fauna, Flora and Merriweather; and Br'er Bear.

  • In Mars Needs Moms, a poster of Mr. Incredible from The Incredibles can be see in Milo's room.
  • In Mary Poppins Returns, during "Can You Imagine That", Mary Poppins makes reference to pirates who play around all day and never get old, which brings Peter Pan to mind.
  • Meet the Robinsons:
    • In the baseball field where Goob is playing, a banner with Mowgli and Baloo is seen on a sign.
    • A scene that didn't make it into the film would have had Carl give Wilbur a note with Winnie the Pooh characters on it saying "Get out! ♡ Carl".
  • Moana:
    • While trying to get his shapeshifter powers back, Maui is briefly transformed into Sven.
    • The Stinger has Tamatoa still toppled over, pleading the audience to help him up. After getting none, he states that they probably would help him if his name was Sebastian and he had a cool Jamaican accent.
  • Monsters, Inc.:
    • Among the toys seen in Boo's room are Jessie and the ball with the star design from Toy Story, and Nemo from Finding Nemo (which hadn't released yet).

  • Pinocchio (2022):
    • The painted castle backdrop seen in Stromboli's puppet show looks an awful lot like Sleeping Beauty Castle from the Disney theme parks.
    • Geppetto's cuckoo clock collection has turned into a Cameo Cluster of characters from various Disney films ranging from fairy tale classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty to more anachronistic picks like Dumbo, The Lion King, Toy Story and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
    • While seeing the Coachman’s henchmen capturing the donkeys, Jiminy hides behind his umbrella like Wendy, John, and Michael do when the Lost Boys are approaching in Peter Pan.
  • Prep & Landing: Wayne watches Mickey's Christmas Carol on TV.
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet: The Oh My Disney! section is based on a real Disney website by that name and is packed with cameos from other Disney properties - for example, Vanellope meets the Disney Princesses, who have C-3PO from Star Wars as their butler.
  • Ratatouille has a couple to The Incredibles:
    • When Linguini considers sneaking Rémy into the kitchen in his trousers, we get a brief glimpse of his boxers which have the Incredibles logo imprinted on them.
    • During the Good-Times Montage, Linguini and Colette skate past a mime who heavily resembles Bomb Voyage.
  • In The Rescuers, a Mickey Mouse watch can be seen in the Rescue Aid Society's meeting room.

  • Strange World:
    • To Atlantis: The Lost EmpireThe Clades trying to keep president Callisto from making the Pando infection worse is very reminiscent of what happens when Milo realizes Roark's true purposes for visiting Atlantis and tries to stop him- both scenes even take place on similar airships! The general tone of the film is also very similar.
    • It also features a reference to Winnie the Pooh (2011); the Backson from that movie appears during the closing credits.
  • Tarzan: The tea set in the Porters' campsite resembles Mrs. Potts and Chip.

    • Toy Story 2: There are several A Bug's Life toys in Al's Toy Barn.
    • Toy Story 3:
      • One of the kids in the daycare looks like an older version of Boo from Monsters, Inc.. When she first appears, she is reenacting a scene from said film using a couple of toys, specifically the scene where Sully accidentally scares Boo (she even says "Boo! No, no, no! What's the matter?").
      • The fact that Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro appears as a toy in the film might be a bit of a weasel call in regards to his connection to Disney, as he's a Studio Ghibli character, but Disney had the rights to distribute the Studio Ghibli films in the United States when Toy Story 3 came out.
    • There are several in Toy Story 4. For example, Bo's remote-controlled skunk vehicle runs on Buy n' Large batteries.
    • Lightyear: One of the buildings on T'Kani Prime is clearly modelled on Space Mountain.
    • There's one in each of the Toy Story Toons shorts.

    • One of Mei's books bears a sticker resembling the rabbit from Burrow. It can only be seen for a split second. Multiple Burrow-esque rabbit stickers also appear on a promotional poster.
    • The logo of Star Command appears as a sticker on Miriam's skateboard, serving as a case of Pixar's Production Foreshadowing for Lightyear. The promotional poster mentioned above also features a sticker of Sox.
    • Mei affectionately refers to the red panda statues in front of her family's temple as Bart and Lisa, a reference to The Simpsons, which Disney got in their Fox acquisition.
    • In the bathroom scene, where Mei's group tries to hide her, one of the stall doors in focus has Nemo in sticker form.
    • At Tyler's place, the Luxo Ball is floating in his large pool while Mei's group is looking down at the backyard.
    • While Mei makes her frantic escape from school, she bumps into a blonde man and a hijab-wearing woman. On the upper left, the papel picado skull designs featured in Coco can be seen.

  • Zootopia:
    • The movie has a character called Duke Weaselton, whose name is an obvious Shout-Out to the Duke of Weselton. Both are even voiced by the same actor. They also have similar roles in the story: being minor antagonists.
    • Another Frozen reference, along with some Biting-the-Hand Humor comes in when Bogo berates Judy for being unsatisfied with her current job, telling her "Life isn't some cartoon musical where you sing a little song and your insipid dreams magically come true! So LET IT GO."
    • Later on, Weaselton is seen on the streets selling pirated movies, all based on fellow Disney movies, two of which are based on movies that weren't out yet, and one of which (Gigantic, parodied as Giraffic) was cancelled.

    • In the first episode, several kids are shown playing a game that is very obviously Spectrobes 2.
    • In the opening, there is a Hidden Mickey in the sushi just after the opening theme.
    • An episode focuses on a trip to Tokyo Disneyland.
  • In one episode of Tangled: The Series, a book for Beauty and the Beast can be seen in the royal library.
  • One episode of Wander over Yonder has the characters watching TV and one of the shows on is an alien version of Gravity Falls but combined with Warner Brothers' Scooby-Doo. The premise of the cartoon is "Dipper", "Mabel", and "Stan" traveling around in the "Mystery Machine" and solving mysteries.
  • Zootopia+:
    • Near the beginning of "Duke the Musical", Duke proclaims himself as the "Duke of Weasel Town". This references Frozen, which features the Duke of Weselton (which is usually mispronounced Weasel Town) as a character. This counts as an Actor Allusion, as both Dukes have the same voice actor.
    • During his song, Duke wears the same crown Prince John from Robin Hood does.

    Print Media

    Video Games
  • Epic Mickey:
    • Tomorrow City's boss, Petetronic, is based off TRON; he shoots disks off his back and can summon rotating shields, and his armor has Tron Lines. His battle arena also looks like the computerized environments in TRON. His name is also a portmanteau of "Pete", "Tron", and "electronic".
    • There are cameos from non-Mickey Mouse Disney characters; Tortooga has the pirates from Peter Pan in it, while a statue of Simba from The Lion King is in Lonesome Manor.
  • Finding Nemo: The ball you bounce in certain levels is none other than the recurring Luxo Ball that's been around since Pixar's inception.
  • The Incredibles: The Eggman Movers and Pizza Planet trucks from Toy Story can be seen during the Late for School level, despite the latter not appearing in this game's parent film.
  • In Monsters, Inc.: Scream Team, Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story appears as a statue in one of the city levels.

    Marvel Entertainment

    Lucasfilm
  • Strange Magic: Marianne is seen training with a sword while blindfolded, much like the hero in A New Hope.
  • The Force Awakens: The way the sky reflects off BB-8's lens after it sees an explosion is reminiscent of Wall-E.

    20th Century Studios/Fox
  • DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story has Fox Sports Net signage visible at times during both the dodgeball and cheerleading tournaments (though it's not clear why it's there for the dodgeball tournament, since ESPN-8 "The Ocho" is supposed to be the only one covering the event). Became Hilarious in Hindsight after the Disney purchase of Fox; this also included the Fox Sports regional networks, but they were sold to Sinclair Broadcast Group shortly after for competition reasons.
  • Family Guy:
    • Subverted in the “Helen of Troy” segment of Heart Burn, one of the first episodes made post-Disney buyout, has Peter Griffin (as Paris) hoping that Hercules could show up now that they’re owned by the company, but is told off-screen that are forbidden to do and have to settle for Launchpad McQuack instead.
  • Free Guy has a few:
  • Ice Age: Scrat Tales: The official poster depicts Scrat performing a "Lion King" Lift on his acorn with Baby Scrat clinging to it.
  • In Ron's Gone Wrong, among the many skins a B-Bot can have are Iron Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as Darth Vader and Stormtroopers from Star Wars.
  • The Simpsons:
    • In the episode "A Fish Called Selma", the family go see Troy McClure star in a musical called Stop The Planet of the Apes, I Want To Get Off!. Both The Simpsons and Planet of the Apes are owned by Fox.
    • One episode is titled "I, (Annoyed Grunt)-Bot" and another is "Them, Robot", a reference to the similarly 20th Century Fox-produced film I, Robot.
    • "Treehouse of Horror XXX", one of the earliest episodes in the post-Disney era of Fox, has Ned Flanders attempting to kill Maggie because she has demonic powers. When he shows Homer and Marge the mark of the beast on her, he comes across a demonic Mickey Mouse mark that reads "Property of Disney" on it and asserts that's the wrong one.

    Disney Channel India
  • In Bhaagam Bhaag, the main character, Sunny, owns a Simple Samosa backpack. Not only do both shows air on Disney Channel India, but they were both created by the same person (Sanjiv Waeerkar).
  • Simple Samosa:
    • "Sumo Momo": The episode's basic plot, as well as several of its plot beats - namely, that both feature a main character musing about a sumo wrestler and being made to fight said sumo wrestler by a friend who assumed they wanted to have a wrestling match with them, and both feature a character going into a rage and defeating the sumo wrestler at the end - are similar to the Mickey Mouse (2013) episode "Tapped Out".
    • The episode "Banana Fontana" is about Samosa pretending to be a popstar named Banana Fontana, which is most likely derived from one of Disney's American series, Hannah Montana.
    • "Sauce Awakens" derives its name from fellow Disney property Star Wars' film, The Force Awakens.
    • In "Mission 925", Dhokla watches a soap opera called Yeh Nashta Kya Kehlata Hai that parodies Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. That airs on StarPlus, which Disney acquired in their purchase of the Fox properties in 2019.
