Drafts for obscure cartoons from Latin/South America (Per ATT)
A separate project based on a query I made over a year ago, about obscure cartoons that were created in and aired in Latin America (but only the ones I've mentioned on that query). The only show I mentioned in that query I was able to get launched was Ba Da Bean. This project is currently in-progress.Announced in 2015, Underdogs United, also known as Metegol: Underdogs United in some territories, is a 2022 Argentine cartoon loosely based on Metegol, a 2013 3D-animated feature film created by Juan Jose Campanella (who serves as an executive producer for this series) and produced by Mundoloco CGI Animation Studios (Mini Beat Power Rockers and Triviatopia).
The story follows a quintet of foosball figures who live in a foosball table in an arcade during the day, but when the doors close, the team breaks out of their metal rods and transports to their actual homeworld of Sportsville, a society where everyone and everything is based on a specific sport, like basketball, baseball, ice hockey, golf, American football, and of course, soccer. As extraordinary as they seem, the team truly cares for each other and will work together to stop any threat who opposes them, from the brutish and rogue rival teams to the villainous mastermind who wants to get rid of the fun in Sportsville by making everyone as lazy as he is while simultaneously attempting to break up the main team. Fortunately, none of his plans ever reach their goals, and the Underdogs United will always come out victorious!
The series was announced in 2015 for Discovery Kids Latin America, and was slated to air on the channel alongside Mini Beat Power Rockers and Floribella, an Animated Adaptation of Floricienta that is currently in Development Hell. United debuted seven years later on March 7, 2022. It later aired in Brazil on November 7 of the same year, though a preview of the show was shown on the Brazilian feed of Discovery+ on December 4, 2021; in Portugal on July 8, 2023 for SIC K; and in the United States on February 16, 2024 for Max (formerly HBO Max).
Tropes:
- Adaptation Dye-Job:
- Downplayed with the team's uniform. In Metegol, the Stripes - the inspiration for the Underdogs United - wore yellow and green uniforms with purely black shorts. In United, the Underdogs United wear green, yellow and red uniforms with red stripes on their shorts. The hue of their uniforms are also noticeably desaturated compared to the film.
- The eye colors for Capi, Beto, and Kiko are also changed. In Metegol, Capi had teal green eyes, Beto had light blue, and Loco, the character Kiko's based on, had light brown. Here, Kiko has maroon eyes, while Beto and Capi's are switched around, with the former having dark green eyes and the latter light blue.
- Adaptation Name Change: The mellow hippie Loco is renamed Kiko for unexplainable reasons.
- Adaptation Personality Change: While can sometimes still border on being a Competition Freak, Capi isn't as blunt and sarcastic as his film counterpart, and while still occasionally annoyed by Beto's overconfident and egotistical behavior, he's less openly vitriolic about it. He also loves to follow the rules, often to the point of obsession as shown in "Run-Amok Refs" where he takes Sergeant Referee's place as the one who gives out red cards at any foul play.
- Adapted Out: None of the major characters in Metegol are seen or even mentioned in United, with the obvious exceptions of Capi, Beto, and Loco/Kiko. Among them are protagonist Amadeo, Laura, El Grosso, Liso and the Rippers, the rest of the Underdogs/Stripes, The Manager, and more. Given that United takes place in a separate continuity, where the rules of how the characters are made have changed significantly, this is justified.
- Alternate Continuity: United is a spin-off to Metegol that takes place in a separate universe, where the foosball players are magical entities who live in a sports-centered world underneath a foosball table, itself now located in an arcade as opposed to a bar. Another noteworthy example is that the lineup for the foosball players are made up of five members of different genders, instead of being an eleven, all-male team.
- Animate Inanimate Object: In addition to living foosball players, the world of Sportsville are inhabited with talking balls and other sports equipment, as well as a toy rabbit as the main antagonist.
- Arch-Enemy: The Underdogs United to Worst, whom they fight on a daily basis.
- Big Bad: Waldobert Worst's has two goals to destroy Sportsville: substituting sports and physical activities for non-physical work (like sleeping) and attempting to break up the titular team by setting up challenges that would normally get on their nerves.
- Baby Of The Bunch: Gigi is the smallest and youngest member of the Underdogs United.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: Despite being fairly intelligent and coming up with the best ideas for his plans even if they never work out the way he hoped, Worst spends most of his free time sleeping on Chester and treating him as his personal couch.
- Cheerful Child: Gigi is always full of energy.
- Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Worst is this to El Grosso of the original film.
- They're goals of wanting to get rid of sports (namely soccer), were motivated out of pettiness and jealousy (Grosso because he lost to a game of table foosball in the past, Worst because they get in his way of enjoying himself), they serve as arch-enemies to the main characters, and are both selfish, overconfident, and cunning individuals whose flaws end up leading to their downfall.
- In terms of appearance, Grosso is an Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette who is quite shapely for his age. Worst, meanwhile, is a blue toy rabbit who is short and stubby and not at all attractive.
- In terms of personality, Grosso puts up the facade of a seemingly nice man to hide his devious behavior and tends to retain his cool even in stressful moments, while Worst is an open Card-Carrying Villain who has a tendency to fly off the handle at the slightest provocations, ESPECIALLY when it involves sports. However, Worst is overall an Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain who has shown in few occasions that he cares for the Underdogs and his minion Chester, to the point of putting aside his villainy to go and save them when they are in danger, as shown in "Playing Outside Sportsville" and "Worst Christmas Present"; meanwhile El Grosso is bad to the bone and has no warmth for anyone other than himself.
- In terms of how evil they are, Grosso wants to reclaim his victory by destroying not only the foosball table and the bar it takes place in, but also the town Amadeo lives in; all because he lost to a game of table foosball. By comparison, the worst thing Worst does is using his devices to make everyone as lazy as he is, rendering the titular team powerless. He never resorts to the Taking Over the World strategy.
- Denser and Wackier: The show is more bouncier, carefree, and crazier compared to it's more serious and down-to-earth source material.
- Ditching the Dub Names: The infamous Weinstein dub of Metegol, retitled as Underdogs, updated the names of Capi, Beto, and Loco to go with the dub, resulting in Captain Skip, Rico, and Ziggy. United reverted Capi and Beto's names, while Loco becomes Kiko but still retains the original four-letter naming scheme.
- In Name Only: The show has very little in common with Metegol despite having the same director involved. The only similarities both works have is the premise of anthropomorphic foosball players who come to life when no one is looking, and retaining three of the eleven major foosball players. Otherwise, you'd be convinced this is an original IP that has no connections with Metegol whatsoever.
- It's All About Me: Beto loves himself, to the point of occasionally carrying a mirror that is designed like him. He is self-centered too, often taking the win for his own, much to the chagrin of the other teammates.
- The Leader: Capi is the leader of the titular team, being the one who comes up with every strategy to every soccer game. He also encourages his teammates through victory speeches.
- Lighter and Softer: Metegol, while not without its comedic moments, was dark in both tone and setting (90% of the movie takes place in the dark), focusing on Amadeo trying to take back both his city and Laura from El Grosso. Meanwhile, Underdogs United is an Edutainment Show focusing on teamwork and sportsmanship, while also having several funny moments bouncing off each of the main characters quirks.
- Mellow Fellow: Kiko is calm and friendly to everyone he meets. He retains his cool even during the most heated of soccer matches.
- No Budget: The animation was made on a shoe-string budget, as per usual with Argentina animation. Animation errors pop up every now and then, and there even some instances where you can see the behind-the-scenes production of the show (e.g. storyboards, production timers).
- Only Sane Man: Compared to her more quirky teammates, Emma is usually the level-headed one. In "Group Therapy", she's the only one whose aware that the Dr. Jerk who serves as their therapy counselor is actually Waldobert Worst in disguise.
- Race Lift: Kiko has a slightly darker skin tone compared to Loco. Also, in a What Could Have Been example, Emma was supposed to have light skin on par with the rest of the cast, as opposed to having black skin.
- Recycled: The Series: Loosely based on Metegol, which was known as Underdogs in the United States, retaining the core trio (Capi, Beto, Loco/Kiko) from the original film as they explore the wacky world of Sportsville alongside Canon Foreigners Emma and Gigi.
- The Smart Girl: Emma is the most intelligent member of the Underdogs United.
- Vocal Dissonance: The titular team had deeper voices in the English dub, at least early on. While their ages are never confirmed outright, they're clearly no older than at least 16, with Gigi in particular being the youngest of them all.
- Vocal Evolution: The voices for the characters in the English dub were noticeably deeper in the earlier episodes. Most prominent with the titular team, who sounded more like young adults despite being around the average age of an adolescent, including Gigi, a little girl. Mid-way through the first season, their voices changed to be significantly higher, matching how they sound in the original language.
Vivi Viravento, shortened as Vivi and renamed Vivi in Whirlyworld in the English dub, is a Brazilian animated Preschool Show by Ale Abreu, based on his short film of the same name. It follows an ambitious young girl who wants to see a mysterious place known as "Whirlyworld", divulged by her great grandmother. Joining on her adventures is her backpack Mochilão and flashlight Lanterninha as the trio travel across the globe to get to Whirlyworld, while also meeting friends along the way. It premiered in Brazil on Discovery Kids, TV Cultura, and TV Ra-Tim-Bum on December 2, 2017, and in the United States on Qubo on January 4, 2020 with an English dub.
Tropes:
- Animate Inanimate Object: Mochilão and Lanterninha are Vivi's equipment, respectively a backpack and a flashlight, who come alive whenever Vivi does her Once per Episode routine.
- Disney Acid Sequence: At least each episode has one after the conflict's resolved, usually consisting of a scrapbook-like setting with the trio and their friend dancing.
- Dub Name Change: The Qubo dub changes the names of Vivi's backpack and flashlight from Mochilão and Lanterninha to Backpack and Flashy.
- Share Phrase: The main trio has "We're getting close to Whirlyworld!".
- Strictly Formula: Each episode has it's structured set-up:
- Vivi visits the designated country in search for Whirlyworld, finds an item related to her journey, follows what the item is doing, after which Mochilão and Lanterninha come to life.
- Once the trio find what they're looking for, they meet the friend of the week, whom they initially have trouble with due to their differences. Vivi is then reminded by her other self that she needs to solve the problem in her own way.
- Once the conflict's resolved, the trio and their new partner dance in a vivid Disney Acid Sequence.
- Vivi concludes the episode by saying she'll find Whirlyworld some other day, followed by an item related to the episode following her around.
Zuzubaland, also known as Zuzubalândia in its native Brazil, is an animated Continuity Reboot of the 1998 Puppet Show of the same name. Created by Marina Caltabiano and produced by SuperToons (creators of Mika's Diary), it's the second adaptation of Caltabiano's book Jujubalândia from 1997.
The world of the titular kingdom is filled with all sorts of nourishments - ranging from candy like chocolate and marshmallows, to snacks like popcorn and soda, to even fruits and vegetables. We follow Zuzu, a Cute, but Cacophonic bee who loves herself and desires to be a celebrated singer in spite of her voice, as she along with her group of friends who are just as wacky and offbeat as she is get into all sorts of crazy situations from the land while also trying to thwart a Wicked Witch who wants to take the crown from the kingdom's ruler, who also happens to be a chef with a thick Italian accent. Unfortunately for her, none of her plans ever go the way she planned.
Zuzubaland premiered on the Brazilian version of Boomerang on May 25, 2018, running for 4 seasons and 52 episodes. An English dub produced by Bang Zoom! Entertainment was released in 2020, with a corresponding YouTube channel launching not long after.
Tropes:
- Animated Adaptation: The 2018 series recreates the characters from the puppet show into a cartoon.
- Big Bad: The Green Witch, at least in the episodes where she appears in. Her primary goal is taking over the titular kingdom with an iron fist.
- Cute, but Cacophonic: Zuzu's Girly Girl appearance is contrasted heavily with her nasally, chalkboard-scratching voice that brings pain to those who are unfortunate enough to here it, especially when she's singing. Coincidentally, in both the English and native Portuguese dubs, her voice is provided by a man.
- Dreadful Musician: Almost none of the characters can stand Zuzu's singing voice, as her high-pitched squeaking voice gets in the way. The Green Witch in particular abhors it, and it's one of the main reasons why she hates Zuzu. Only Popcorn (and to a lesser extent Marsha) can tolerate her singing.
- Dub Name Change: The English dub updates a few of the characters names (only Fast, Sushiroco, Garfedia, and Zuzu herself retain their original names):
- Sundae is changed from Suspiro.
- Rocky Cocoa is changed from Brigadeiro.
- Popcorn is changed from Pipoca.
- Marsha Mallow is changed from Maria Mole.
- Hot Dog is changed from Laricão.
- King Appetite is changed from Rei Appetite.
- The Green Witch is changed from Bruxa Anoréxica, which directly translates to Anorexic Witch.
- Egopolis: Subverted with the titular kingdom. Though Zuzubaland is named after Zuzu, its ruled by King Appetite.
- Green and Mean: The Green Witch lives up to her name by having olive skin, which simultaneously matches her nastiness and desire to get rid of the joy in Zuzubaland.
- Larynx Dissonance: Dino Andrade supplies the voice for the female Zuzu, using a much more higher tone for the character's speaking voice compared to his previous male roles.
- Secondary Adaptation: Based on the namesake puppet show, which itself is based on Jujubalândia.
- Wicked Witch: The Green Witch checks all of the boxes of one: she is tall and skinny, has a dark green skin color, is described as ugly to which she embraces, is equipped with a Magic Wand, rides a broom whenever she goes out of her castle, uses potions and sorcery, and has a temperamental, fun-hating personality.
- Virtuous Bees: Vanity and cacophony aside, Zuzu generally means well and has very little dubious intentions when achieving her goals (at worst, she's Innocently Insensitive). She also adores her friends as much as herself.

Neptunia Role Association draft proposal
A draft I created for a potential Role Association page for Neptunia, which covers both the mainline titles (remakes included) and spin-off games, as well as characters who received The Other Darrin in the English dub. Originally, I was intending on revising the the pre-existing examples on the Video Game sub-pages for RA, but with how big the examples are creating a series-specific sub-page would've made things a whole lot easier.Japanese
