Sky Realm Adventurer
Versus

The main character and Captain of the Grandcypher crew, accompanied by his best friend Vyrn, and the mysterious blue-haired girl Lyria, whom he shares a life link with. The trio and their crew have since embarked on a journey across the skies, and became acquainted with several individuals of various races or positions. Gran is also a Singularity; an individual whom the fate of the world revolves around. Little did he know, he's not the only Singularity in the world.

Gran is a beginner-friendly shoto-style fighter with a tool for any situation including a reliable projectile, uppercut, and his iconic "big-boot" kick. He's an honest but rewarding character that can find success with players of all skills.

  • Ascended Meme: When used as a helper character in Rising, Gran may ask why everyone is always talking about his boots. This is a reference to the "Gran Boot Fantasy Versus" meme from the base game.
  • Assist Character: Gran is doing most of the fighting, but Lyria appears to summon Proto Bahamut during his Super Skybound Art.
  • Blow You Away: He uses the green wind element in his attacks, like empowering his sword strikes and sending forward a gust projectile.
  • Charged Attack: Gran's "Power Raise" can be held either for increased damage, or for delaying the attack itself. It can also be cancelled prematurely.
  • Charge Meter: "Power Raise" can be held for more damage. But if the attack is not yet launched, the pent-up charge is visually indicated as a color-coded mist behind Gran, vaguely resembling a Battle Aura.
  • Hit Stop: At its highest charge level, "Power Raise" briefly pauses the action and slightly moves the camera around if it successfully damages the opponent.
  • "Just Frame" Bonus: His new Super Skybound Art in Rising, "Eternal Edge", is a follow-up attack that requires pressing an additional button just when the first hit of "Tempest Blade" connects with the opponent.
  • Leitmotif: "Such a Blue Sky", which is a blend of several themes, with "Battle 1" from the Granblue gacha and the main theme of Versus as the primary references.
  • Male Might, Female Finesse: The big difference between the two versions of the Captain, Gran and Djeeta. Gran is Unskilled, but Strong, and relatively straightforward, whereas Djeeta adds more acrobatics and finesse to her swordplay. It's even highlighted in their Hurricane Kicks; Djeeta does a deft, skillful sword combo, whereas Gran just throws himself at the opponent, boot-first.
  • Moveset Clone: Downplayed between Gran and Djeeta. They share some similar animations by virtue of them being the male and female versions (respectively) of the original Granblue gacha game's main character, a.k.a. the Grandcypher captain. Both of them can call for the aid of Lyria and Proto Bahamut in one of their Skybound Arts. In terms of general gameplay, they're both Shotoclones, but even if they have some identical button inputs or suspciously-similar attacks (like kicking diagonally down as their crouch attack, or their blue Hadoken fireball move Reginleiv), Djeeta mostly has her own flair of unique animations to at least distinguish her from Gran.
  • Schrödinger's Player Character: Due to being each other's opposite gender counterpart, Gran and Djeeta display utter confusion when pitted against each other, compounded with dialogue from Lyria and Vyrn about seeing themselves standing alongside the other Captain. A post-launch story mode chapter depicts them meeting each other, with Djeeta explicitly coming from an alternate continuity; while Gran's crew express confusion, they come to accept her as captain for the time being as well. This carries into the story of Rising, where Gran and Djeeta continue to co-exist with each other.
  • Shotoclone: Gran has the archetypal fireball projectile, traveling kick , and invincible uppercut moves in the form of "Reginleiv", "Overdrive Surge", and "Rising Sword", respectively. He's also a well-rounded beginner character, though emphasizing close-ranged strikes.
  • Skill Gate Characters: Gran is designed to be the typical "basic, well-rounded" fighter archetype, and is a Shotoclone to boot. In fact, he's one of the most straightforward shotos in this game, with so few additional gimmicks that make him less predictable. It's more of an intentional choice by the devs as of Rising because he's always available in the rotating roster of that game's Free version, which means everyone (including newbies) can always have the option to play as him. And in the character select screen, his "Ease of use" tooltip has five stars out of five, while his brief gameplay description outright says Gran is a "standard fighter with few twists".
  • Slap-on-the-Wrist Nuke: Gran's Super Skybound Art has him and Lyria summon Proto Bahamut, who proceeds to lay waste to the opponent with a laser-beam nuke.
  • Training Dummy: He's the pre-selected opponent for the Basic Mission section of the Mission Training mode.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: The given description of Gran's ability to fight. He's rough and clearly self-taught, but he's managed to refine it into something that works all the same, and for what he lacks, there's a hefty sum of raw power behind his attacks.

    Katalina

Katalina Aryze (with Ares)

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro (Japanese), Erica Lindbeck (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_katalina.png
Skybound Protector
Versus

A former knight of the Erste Empire who was assigned to be Lyria's guardian, and has formed a pact with the knight-like Primal Beast Ares. She's one of the first individuals recruited to the Grandcypher crew, mostly because of her decision to uphold her duty of protecting Lyria no matter where they go. As such in Versus, she's also the first ally who has been freed from the brainwashing of the Exia. Armed with a rapier, Katalina also has mastery over ice.

Katalina is an all-rounder suited to controlling the mid-range, using her rapier and strong defensive tools to outplay the opponent.

  • Combination Attack: In Katalina's Super Skybound Art, she and Ares both make way in slashing the opponent between them.
  • Counter-Attack: "Light Wall" conjures a blue shield in front of her which grants 40% damage reduction, followed by a slash attack. It's a defensive move designed to punish the opponent's attack, but the slash will still happen regardless if her opponent took the bait or not.
  • An Ice Person: She commands ice with her attacks, just like in the original game.
  • Lag Cancel: Although "Light Wall" puts her in a defensive stance, she can still dash forward or backward to cancel the defense and do something else.
  • Leitmotif: "The Path of Duty", which is a remix of her theme from the anime. The "Ares" theme of her eponymous Primal Beast is an even more ominous remix of the same theme.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: "Frozen Blade", as its name implies, launches a shard of ice that's shaped like a blade.
  • Shotoclone: She has the archetypal projectile, Dash Attack, and invincible uppercut moves, and is a well-rounded beginner character, with more of a focus on the mid-range thanks to her rapier.

    Charlotta

Charlotta Fenia

Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_charlotta.png
Tiny Justice
Versus

The Captain of the Holy Knights of Lumiel. Despite her nature as a Harvin, she has a desire to become taller, which is exemplified by her constantly trying to stand over a stack of crates. Don't be fooled by her appearances though, as her rank suggests, she's still a very capable and respected knight.

  • Blade Spam: "Sword of Lumiel" has Charlotta slash forward 3-5 times in quick succession.
  • Counter-Attack: "Königsschild" is a brief defensive stance with a 50% damage reduction. If the opponent hits her with a close-range attack in this state, she will automatically perform a counter-slash, complete with a dramatic camera pan.
  • Gratuitous German: A name of Charlotta's unique abilitynote  is German.
  • Hitbox Dissonance: Charlotta's crown also has a hurtbox apart from her small body's own hurtbox. As stated by the developers in the Closed Beta Test Matchup, this is intentional for the sake of balance because it allows other characters to hit over her without whiffing, and stops her from being a game-breaker.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Being a Harvin, she's one of, if not the, shortest character in the game, but can deal a ton of damage.
  • Rolling Attack: "Shining Onslaught" attack and "Brilliant Moon" Skybound Art make her roll forward along with her sword, dealing damage upon immediate contact with the opponent.
  • Running Gag: Since Charlotta always trips and falls on top of her boxes, her regular match victory dialogues all get interrupted mid-sentence.
  • Stab the Sky: Charlotta's round Victory Pose simply has her pointing up her sword.

    Lancelot

Lancelot

Voiced by: Yuki Ono (Japanese), Stephen Fu (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_lancelot.png
Twinfang Prodigy
Versus

One of the four Dragon Knights and captain of the Order of the White Dragon.

Lancelot is a very agile fighter who specializes with attacking in quick succession, while incorporating ice-elemental powers to keep opponents in place.

  • Charged Attack: The attack button must be held for his "Turbulenz" skill to execute its downward slash follow-up attack. Otherwise, a simple tap will just make him Flash Step above his opponent and do nothing else.
  • Flash Step: "Wirbelwind", "Feint", and "Wogenstrom" involve fast and agile dashes. "Jump", "Turbulenz" and "Weissflugel" are faster dashes that make him briefly disappear and teleport at short distances.
  • Gratuitous German: Some names of Lancelot's unique abilitiesnote  are German.
  • Harmless Freezing: Lancelot's Super Skybound Art encases the opponent in a large dome of ice before he shatters it. The opponent may still survive, however.
  • An Ice Person: He channels ice into his attacks, including his Super Skybound Art where he freezes the opponent in a huge iceberg.
  • In the Back: Lancelot's "Blade Impulse" allows him to slip behind the opponent, but it's only activated once the opponent attempts to block the move.
  • Leitmotif: Pitting Lancelot against Percival results in a remix of their shared image song with the rest of the Dragon Knights (aptly titled "Dragon Knights", which originated from the Granblue gacha game) playing during their duel.
  • Wall Jump:
    • Lancelot can jump to, and bounce off from the nearest stage wall when in mid-air.
    • If performed on the ground, his "Schoner Winterhugel" Super Skybound Art makes him leap to the wall behind him before bouncing off it and launching himself towards his opponent.
  • Weapon Twirling: He does this with his dual blades whenever he wins the match without using his Super Skybound Art.

    Percival

Percival Wales

Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka (Japanese), Anthony Sitoy (English, Versus), Mark Whitten (English, Rising)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_percival.png
Lord of Flames
Versus

One of the four Dragon Knights and the heir to the nation of Wales. He's also known for his mastery over fire, hence his title "Lord of Flames" (or "Sir Burnsalot", a nickname given to him by Vyrn).

  • Casting Gag: With Mark Whitten taking over the role of Percival for the English dub of Rising, this certainly isn't the first time he's played a leading member of a group of weapon masters with an affinity for fire.
  • Charged Attack: "Lohenwolf" can be charged by holding down the button. It becomes an unblockable move when fully charged.
  • EX Special Attack: "Traumerei" grants him Status Buff stocks (represented as fire orbs in the HUD) that enhance the Medium or Heavy versions of his skills. A stock is immediately expended with each enhanced skill performed.
  • Grapple Move: For a command throw, "X-Seele" is unique even amongst the ubiquitous grabs of the Fighting Game genre because it doesn't deal any damage despite stunning or knocking down the opponent.
  • Gratuitous German: Several names of Percival's unique abilitiesnote  are German.
  • Inconsistent Dub: Played straight in the initial version of the game. Much of his English dialogue ended up clashing with the original intent behind the caharacter. The recast in Rising fixed this with an updated, Truer to the Text translation, but this resulted in a strange inversion where now the subtitles are carried over from the first game, meaning it's the words on screen that don't match.
  • Informed Attractiveness: In the "Trail-Blazing Flame" quest, a merchant describes Percival being as wise as he is handsome.
  • Leitmotif: Pitting Lancelot against Percival results in a remix of their shared image song with the rest of the Dragon Knights (aptly titled "Dragon Knights", which originated from the Granblue gacha game) playing during their duel.
  • Playing with Fire: Almost all of his attacks light the opponent ablaze.
  • Tornado Move: The enhanced, close-range version of his "Feuerrote Krone" Super Skybound Art engulfs the opponent inside a fire tornado which then explodes.

    Ladiva

Ladiva

Voiced by: Tetsu Inada (Japanese), Patrick Seitz (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_ladiva.png
Herald of Love
Versus

From the Jewel Resort Casino, Ladiva is a wrestler who wants to spread the concept of love, believing that it can solve pretty much any conflict.

Ladiva is the premiere grappler of the game, closing in and unleashing damaging throws and mix-ups on her opponent to crush them in only a few good hits.

  • Belly Flop Crushing: Ladiva's Super Skybound Art spawns a ring which lets her pin down the opposition with her entire body. In an allusion to wrestling rules, a referee will count up to three before declaring Ladiva as the winner. However if the opponent has enough life, they will kick out right before 3.
  • The Coats Are Off: Ladiva removes her fur coat before the match starts.
  • Developer's Foresight: Ladiva's Super Skybound Art has a rather unique interaction. When the opponent can be defeated by this move, Ladiva would succeed in the three-count pin and be declared as the winner by the referee. But if the opponent has enough health to survive this, they kick out off the pin at just around the 2.97 to 2.99 second mark, the referee commentates on their survival and the fight continues normally.
  • Diving Kick: Ladiva's Skybound Art is a powerful dropkick as expected from a wrestler.
  • Grapple Move: While all of the cast can perform all sorts of standard grabs, Ladiva specializes in these with her several throws and wrestling moves being the focus of her gameplay.
  • The Grappler: The designated wrestler of the roster; Ladiva is built to close in on her opponent and trap them in devastating command grab set ups, having no shortage of frame traps and unblockable throws.
  • "Just Frame" Bonus: Her special "Work the Crowd" taunt has a rather tight window; the follow up button must be pressed just when she's about to finish slamming her opponent to the ground, late inputs do nothing otherwise.
  • Mighty Glacier: Ladiva also has an increased HP value, as she possesses not a single ranged attack and can have a hard time closing in on range-oriented characters like Ferry and Metera. When she does get close however, it may lead to a Curb-Stomp Battle fitting for her grappler archetype.
  • Spam Attack: The Heavy version of "Headbutt of Love" allows a follow-up of two more consecutive headbutts.
  • Training Dummy: She's the pre-selected opponent for the Skill Practice and Combo Practice sections of the Mission Training mode.

    Metera

Metera

Voiced by: Ryōka Yuzuki (Japanese), Faye Mata (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_metera.png
Peerless Shot
Versus

An Erune who's considered a genius when it comes to archery, but Metera's also a playful individual who loves to flirt and tease others, especially men.

  • Arbitrary Weapon Range: The arrow fired by her standing Heavy Attack dissipates at a given distance, unlike those fired by her skills which can travel far to the opposite end of the stage.
  • Bottomless Magazines: She never runs out of arrows because she can just magically create them out of thin air.
  • Improbable Use of a Weapon: The down/crouch variant of her "Zephyr" action makes her ride her bow like a skateboard, which also deals damage upon contact.
  • Long-Range Fighter: As a bow-wielder, Metera's kit mostly revolves around firing arrows, so much so her normal Heavy Attack and many of her skills launch ranged projectiles. She even has plenty of movement options (such as her "Zephyr" unique action) or attack animations (such as her Overhead Attack) that are designed to keep a distance from her opponent.
  • Male Gaze: Her Player 1 intro animation shows a glimpse of her butt.
  • Necessary Drawback: Her "Starry Sky" projectiles are slower than her Heavy Attack projectiles as a drawback for their longer range.
  • Playing with Fire: Her arrows are empowered by pink fire. Her "Dense Caress" Skybound Art is more straightforward at demonstrating her element as her somesault kick creates an orange trail of flames, followed by her launching an arrow made out of orange flame.
  • Recursive Ammo: "The Great Fall" makes her fire an arrow upwards which then splits into multiple arrows hitting down.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: "Aetherial Seal" makes her blow a kiss which forms into a pink butterfly.
  • Trap Master: The butterfly produced by her "Aetherial Seal" travels across the stage and explodes to deal additional damage when her projectiles pass through it.

    Lowain

Lowain (with Elsam, Tomoi, Lady Katapillar, and Yggdrasil)

Brofam Forever
Versus

Lowain is an Erune cook with a massive crush on Katalina. He's always with his best friends Elsam and Tomoi, and they make up the comic relief trio who always love to fantasize about things, even if their imagination is far from what's considered realistic. Such fantasies include mishaps where Katalina is turned into a robot named "Lady Katapillar". Oh, and Elsam has a crush on Yggdrasil, the attractive but mute Primal Beast who inhabits the forests of the Lumacie Archipelago, and is associated with earth and plants.

Lowain is a goofy mix-up oriented fighter with an array of tools to throw the opponent off guard, including calling in Elsam and Tomoi for assistance and deploying Lady Katapillar to blast projectiles. He's notable for his unique Super Skybound Art where he and the bros summon Yggdrasil to fight in their place, using her powerful magic to test the opponent's defensive skills.

  • All Just a Dream: Every fight you win as Lowain is revealed in his win animation to just be an elaborate story he's spinning for the bros. This is a nod to some events in the Granblue gacha where they constantly imagine hypothetical scenarios while meeting up in a café. After all, most characters on the roster would canonically kick his ass anyway, which they also lampshade.
Lowain: (after beating Gran) Thought-science, bros. What if we actually fought the cap'n for real?"
The Bros: "Totes! We'd be out of a job!"
  • Assist Character: Lowain's bros Tomoi and Elsam help him out for several of his abilities as well as being able to summon Lady Katapillar. He can also summon Yggdrasil to fight in his place temporarily.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: RPG Mode cutscenes portray some of the humanoid Primal Beasts such as Yggdrasil in roughly the same height as the skyfarers, owing to their ability to shift their size. Lowain can summon Yggdrasil to temporarily fight for him, and she becomes huge. The game's camera even zooms out just to properly fit her in the screen. A story quest also has the crew fighting her giant form to calm her down.
  • Behemoth Battle: Lowain can summon the giant Yggdrasil to fight other similarly-gigantic Primal Beasts in the RPG Mode, including Yggdrasil herself. Naturally, this can also happen in a mirror match if both Lowain players summon their own Yggdrasil against each other.
  • Combination Attack: The light and medium versions of "Sammy & Tommy" call either Elsam or Tomoi to charge forward and attack the opponent, but the heavy version calls them both at once so that their attacks can chain into a combo.
  • Convection, Schmonvection: You can spot-evade/dodge Yggdrasil's "Nether Veil" lava attack if you time it properly. Willing Suspension of Disbelief applies on how your character's feet won't even take damage from the heat.
  • Counter-Attack: "Come at me bro!" allows him to fully deflect an attack and automatically strike back, useful against especially predictable opponents.
  • Elemental Powers: Yggdrasil has earth, lightning, and fire-elemental attacks.
  • Fighting Clown: Lowain is a gimmicky character from a gameplay perspective, in order to match his lore of being the comedic relief from the original game. He doesn't have a recognizable or refined fighting style (Even Percival lampshades that the Lowain Bros' fighting style is unorthodox), he can summon the tiny robot Katapillar as a special move, and when he's on his last legs, he can call on the primal Yggdrasil to help him out.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: Lowain and his bros will sometimes remark on meta aspects, like how he's Dark elemental (his initial version's element in the gacha game), Zeta's clothing damage from her Super Skybound Art, mirror matches being palette swaps, or especially Percival being popular enough in the Granblue fandom to have his own merchandise.
  • He Knows About Timed Hits: Lowain, due to his Fourth-Wall Observer status in this game, is aware of its various mechanics:
    • After defeating Beelzebub, Lowain wonders that they could be buff like him if they level-up in the Crimson Horizon.
    • After defeating Charlotta, the boys talk about elements, as in the Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors mechanics of Granblue.
    • After defeating Katalina, he says this line, which makes him poke fun even at this game's UI:
Lowain: If I were to describe my feelings for Kat, I'd need a few more text boxes...
  • Homing Projectile: Yggdrasil's "Axis Mundi" tracks the opponent's position the moment it's released.
  • Immune to Flinching:
    • The Lowain Bros' human pyramid attack Skybound Art makes them immune to flinching, but also leaves them unable to block. They are also still affected by Hit Stop.
    • When summoned by Lowain and the bros, Yggdrasil is outright immune to flinching.
  • Last Chance Hit Point: Yggdrasil provides this for Lowain. No matter how much damage you deal, you can't kill her when she's summoned, which leaves Lowain with a sliver of HP once his Super Skybound Art ends.
  • Leitmotif: "Party People", a remix of Lowain, Elsam and Tomoi's Image Song single from the Granblue gacha game.
  • Skill Gate Characters: Yggdrasil is designed to feel "way too strong" to fight against because her flinch immunity, inability to die and huge attacks make it seem like she can curb-stomp every player. However, she also has some drawbacks to balance things out; she shares Lowain's HP meter, she doesn't remain on-stage forever and her attacks can be spot-dodged. She's more of a "knowledge check" mechanic who can be anticipated at high-level plays by those who get accustomed to her. And because she is Lowain's Super Skybound Art, this means he's already at low health and would take a while to summon her again if the opponent is still alive after she disappears.
  • Switch-Out Move: The main gimmick of Lowain's Super Skybound Art is to switch out with Yggdrasil, allowing the player to take control of her temporarily. However, she will still share his remaining HP gauge and vice-versa when her duration ends.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Judging by the Bros' interactions with Ferry and Metera, Tomoi has a masochistic side to him, being excited on the prospect of being whipped or stepped on.

    Ferry

Ferry (with Nicola, Fugee, Beppo, Geegee, and Momo)

Voiced by: Madoka Yonezawa (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_ferry.png
Spirit Maiden
Versus

A ghost girl of the Erune race, Ferry has lived far longer than her young appearance suggests, and she's accompanied by her five ghost pets Nicola, Fugee, Beppo, Geegee, and Momo. She's one of the first individuals who noticed strange occurences that suddenly spread across the skies, which led to her unfortunate encounter with Belial. The protagonists eventually freed her from being brainwashed.

Ferry is one of the game's go-to zoners, boasting incredible range and damage thanks to her whip and squad of familiars that can cover most of the screen with attacks.

  • Attack Animal: Her ghost pets are also included in her moveset. The most obvious skills where this happens are "Geegee. Get 'Em!" and "Beppo, Sic 'Em!" which involve Geegee and Beppo shocking the enemy up-close, and serving as her anti-air attack, respectively. The enhanced version of her "Aetheryte Requiescat" likewise sends all of her ghost pets flying to detonate themselves at the enemy from afar.
  • Building Swing: "Ghost Swing" lets Ferry swing in mid-air while her whip is hooked into the stage's ceiling.
  • Diving Kick: "Spectral Dive" makes Ferry spin her entire body like a drill aimed downwards, resulting in a diving kick with both feet hitting her opponent.
  • Grapple Move: While all of the cast can perform all sorts of standard grabs, Ferry also has a long-ranged grapple where she either holds the opponent in place with her whip while her ghost pets attack, or simply pull them towards her.
  • Gratuitous German: Some names of Ferry's unique abilitiesnote  are German.
  • The Ingenue: Belial calls her this and describes her as "pure and innocent". Unlike typical examples of the trope, Ferry is not fooled as easily.
  • Leitmotif: "Licht", an instrumental rendition of her Image Song single "Sora no Michishirube" from the Granblue gacha game.
  • Light 'em Up: Slightly ambiguous as all versions of Ferry except Grand (dark) are light element. Her appearance in-game is modelled after her light SSR version and conjures blue light for spells, but borrows her super move from the Grand version. Her theme song is also called "Licht" ("light").
  • Long-Range Fighter: Ferry is designed as a long-ranged "zoner" fighter, even the devs described her as such in a Closed Beta Test Matchup video. Her normal attacks have an extended range because of her whip weapon, she has a ranged grapple move, she sends out her ghost pets to keep the opponent at a distance (her anti-air attack doesn't even move her forward unlike traditional Shoryukens), and she can swing away in mid-air. However, said grapple move also lets her pull enemies closer as an option if the player wants her to fight up-close.
  • Parrying Bullets: "Gespenst" can neutralize projectiles.
  • Pinball Projectile: "Vergiften" allows her to summon Momo, who promptly turns into an Energy Ball that bounces off the floor and the arena walls.
  • She-Fu: While most female characters do flips in some of their animations, Ferry stands out with even her Player 2 intro featuring a sideways flip into the arena. Every single one of her jumps includes a somersault (both forward and backward), her landing recovery animation is her doing a cartwheel and her "wake-up" animation from being knocked on her back is a backwards roll from a lying position into standing - which is impressive, considering she's wearing high-heeled boots.
  • Slap-on-the-Wrist Nuke: While canonically not nearly as powerful as the Super Skybound Arts of Gran, Djeeta, Beelzebub or Belial, Ferry's "Aetheryte Requiescat" is still the magical equivalent of barraging some poor individual with guided missiles, culminating in a large explosion with the victim at its center.
Ferry: We'll see you ... on the other side!
  • Super Mode: "Hinrichten" temporarily powers up Ferry, which gives her the ability to perform follow-up attacks.
  • Whip of Dominance: Ferry is The Beastmaster and wears a pretty revealing outfit with dominatrix overtones and fittingly she uses a magically enhanced whip for fighting, which allows her to do a lot of cool and impossible things like making it float and spin around her, destroy projectiles or pull the opponent towards her. "Whip it good" is even the name of one of her skills!
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Her long-ranged "Gespenst" skill has a follow-up "Heel" grapple move wherein she pulls her opponent with her whip.

Crimson Spear
Versus

A member of the organization known as "The Society" which focuses on hunting Primal Beasts, and is armed with a weapon designed for that purpose, the Spear of Arvess.

Zeta is a versatile fighter who specializes in fighting at mid-range, using high-pressure moves to force the opponent back and wail on them in the corner.

  • Button Mashing: Zeta's "Signo Drive" unique action deals more damage and hits if you repeatedly tap the button.
  • Immune to Flinching: "Rhapsody" is a defensive stance that briefly makes her immune to flinching even if the opponent attacks her.
  • Lag Cancel: "Spear of Arvess" can be chained with itself as a Spam Attack, but the first pierce doesn't really need to hit the opponent, allowing the player to cancel its animation mid-way and quickly perform the next pierce.
  • Leitmotif: "Arvess", a remix of "Skyburning Bonds" from the Granblue gacha game. It's also named after her weapon.
  • Playing with Fire: She lights her spear aflame while performing several special moves.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: "Spear of Arvess" is a piercing Dash Attack at its basic form, but it can be followed-up with another pierce, making it a Spam Attack. The attacks can also be aimed at multiple directions, allowing Zeta to quickly zip around the stage while dealing damage. This includes being able to dash backwards as a form of escape.
  • Spam Attack: Two of her core moves involve repeating the same attack; "Signo Drive" encourages Button Mashing to make the most out of it, while "Spear of Arvess" is a piercing attack that can be chained with itself.

Ebony Scythe
Versus

Another member of the Primal Beast-hunting organization "The Society", Vaseraga is a hulking man with a concealed face and armed with the massive sinister scythe Grynoth. His body is also special by virtue of being modified with the ability to withstand untold pain. Despite all these menacing aspects on the outside, Vaseraga is actually a kind person deep within.

Vaseraga is a juggernaut who powers through the opponent's attacks to land devastating slashes with his scythe. His huge, damaging normals and loads of super armor make him a terrifying opponent to contest.

  • Bald Head of Toughness: His ending shot in Versus reveals he has no hair underneath his helmet and face bandages.
  • Battle Aura: Purple flames flicker on Vaseraga's body if his "Soul Forge" buff is active.
  • Casting a Shadow: His strikes all emit dark energy.
  • Charged Attack: Many of his scythe attacks can be charged, notably his standing Heavy attacks, his "Battalions of Fear" Dash Attack, and all four of his follow-up attacks while in "Savage Rampage" stance.
  • Combat Compliment: Vaseraga's such a Nice Guy that most of his intro interactions and win quotes against other characters involve him either praising their current skills, or encouraging them to train more and improve. Also, one of his common win quotes goes like this:
    "Nothing personal".
  • Difficult, but Awesome: The forward dash of his "Bloody Moon" Super Skybound Art can make him avoid damage from projectiles, but only just when the projectile is about to hit him. Do it too early, and the brief invincibility will wear off, making him collide with the projectile and take damage. While it's a great tool for closing the distance (given his slow walking speed), it's still a risky tactic if mistimed.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Previous Granblue lore and his Glossary section state that Vaseraga's body can "withstand untold pain". This translates into his super moves and "Soul Forge" ability making him Immune to Flinching, especially his "Aftermath" Super Skybound Art which briefly prevents him from taking any damage.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Vaseraga's eyes glow red from his helmet's visor whenever he uses a Skybound Art or a Super Skybound Art.
  • Immune to Flinching: "Soul Forge" manually grants him super armor properties while using certain skills or attacks, such as "Battalions of Fear" or charged Heavy attacks.
  • Invulnerable Attack: Both his "Bloody Moon" and "Aftermath" supers have invincibility properties to a certain degree; the former just grants it briefly against close-ranged attacks, but the latter makes him immune to all sources of damage (including long-ranged projectiles) during its start-up animation.
  • Leitmotif: "Grynoth", a remix of "Second Advent" from the Granblue gacha game, notable for its association with the Society (the organization which he belongs to). It's also named after his weapon.
  • Mighty Glacier: Vaseraga has one of the highest HP values in the game and is armed with hard-hitting attacks, but he walks quite slowly. He also possesses a few moves that make him temporarily Immune to Flinching.
  • Reverse Grip: He holds his massive scythe with a reverse grip (the scythe's blade resting on the ground) during his "Savage Rampage" stance.
  • Stance System: "Savage Rampage" puts him in a stance state where he temporarily gains access to four attacks that replace his standard attacks.

    Beelzebub

Beelzebub / Chaos Bringer

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (Japanese), Adin Rudd (English)

Eternity Ender
Versus

Initially appearing as a mysterious hooded figure, Beelzebub (a.k.a. Chaos Bringer) is a Singularity who considers himself a nemesis to the Singularity of the Sky Realm, Gran (and by extension Gran's alternate counterpart, Djeeta). He already possesses tremendous power but isn't content with that yet, as he aims to obtain Lucilius' "legacy" even if he has to team up with the cunning Belial.

Beelzebub is one of the key recurring antagonists from the "What Makes The Sky Blue" trilogy anniversary arc of the original Granblue gacha, and the "first" villain of the Versus spin-off. As such, his surrounding lore is deeply tied with the other Granblue characters who also have prominent roles in that arc, including the Grandcypher Captain, Belial, Lucilius, Avatar, and even Cagliostro.

  • Arch-Enemy: Versus establishes them as the Captain's, in comparison to the rivalry between Belial and Sandalphon or Lucilius and Lucifer from the gacha game. Unlike the others though, Beelzebub is smart enough to make a Rivals Team Up situation with the Captain to get rid of Belial in this game.
  • Barrier Warrior: His "Langelaan Field" move can create a magical barrier to protect himself. In RPG Mode, it significantly rises his defense and can only be broken by a Skybound Art.
  • Casting a Shadow: He constantly uses chaos matter, which looks like a dark-colored substance used in some of his attacks, and is described in the Glossary as a form of "chaos and void powers" combined.
  • Charged Attack:
    • His projectile attack, "Black Flies", can be charged to increase the number of hits for each spike.
    • His "Black Spear" Skybound Art can be held to delay its release. The charged version also deals more damage at close range.
  • The Coats Are Off: Beelzebub removes his longcoat before the match starts.
  • Flash Step: "Shadowstep" is a fast teleport command at fixed distances.
  • Grapple Move: "Anthem" is a grab version of his other Skybound Art (meaning, it's a command grab super move), where he'd launch his Black Spear only when the opponent is caught in his orb.
  • Instant Costume Change: He can magically unhood/hood himself before/after battles.
  • Marathon Boss: The final story quest of RPG Mode pits you in back-to-back raid boss fights against Beelzebub, Avatar, and then another round of Beelzebub, who's now stronger than in the first fight.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Beelzebub is not referred to by name at all, and is only ever called "Chaos Bringer". Except when fought as the Final Boss, that is.
  • Promoted to Playable: Versus notably marks the first time he's playable in the Granblue franchise. He was a villain NPC in the gacha game. Here, he's both an unlockable character, and the first DLC character.
  • Puzzle Boss: As a raid boss battle in RPG Mode, Beelzebub has defensive gimmicks which require you to dispel his barrier with a Skybound Art or Super Skybound Art before you could properly damage him.
  • Secret Character: Beelzebub can be unlocked as a playable character after beating RPG Mode for the first time. The other option, however, is to purchase him as a DLC.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: He creates a giant spear-tipped object out of chaos matter during his "Black Spear" and "Anthem" Skybound Arts.
  • Slap-on-the-Wrist Nuke: Beelzebub has "Chaos Legion", where he generates a huge red orb, compresses it to a smaller size and then detonates it RIGHT in his victim's face, causing an utterly gigantic explosion.
Beelzebub: There won't be a shred of you left! Chaos Leeeeeegiooooon!
  • Spectacular Spinning: His moveset has plenty of spinning moves. Even the projectiles he uses spin around.
  • Super Mode: In RPG mode, Chaos Bringer has multiple phases in the Final Boss fight, allowing him to perform additional moves, or even switch out with Avatar.
  • Switch-Out Move: In the Final Boss fight of RPG Mode, a phase allows Beelzebub to switch with Avatar.
  • Villain Protagonist: The aptly titled "Villain Series" DLC allows you to play as Chaos Bringer and Belial both being the Big Bads of the "What Makes The Sky Blue" trilogy from "Paradise Lost" to "000", each with their own few episodes in the RPG Mode of Versus. invoked According to Word of God, Chaos Bringer's DLC story will touch up on his secret identity which had not been revealed in the trilogy itself.
  • Villain Song: He didn't exactly have one during his debut in the gacha game, but Versus gave "Existence" as his theme. It talks about his jealousy of Lucilius, and his desire to triumph over him to become the king of all existence.
  • Worthy Opponent:
    • Beelzebub regards Gran as one for being the only other Singularity and is the only character in the roster who doesn't condescend to with insults.
    • Initially, a few dialogue lines in the free story mode quests and some versus interactions between them implied that Beelzebub is terrified of Cagliostro out of humiliation because she sealed him away, and he repeatedly mentions that he has never forgotten her face. The optional boss battle quest "Pitfall" also reveals that he acknowledged her worth because of what she did.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: "Karma" summons an orb that lets him pull his opponent, and its pull speed varies depending on the skill's version.

Ephemeral Blade
Versus

An excellent swordsmaster who has a rather low self-esteem and the tendency to fall asleep while "meditating". Narmaya is also very fond of the Grandcypher Captain, Lyria and Vyrn, and she considers herself their "big sister".

Narmaya is a stance-based fighter with a massive arsenal of tools at her disposal, all requiring knowledge and careful consideration to maximize. She excels with her highly adaptive playstyle and ability to lay on pressure at all times.

  • Berserk Button: The reason Narmaya is pissed at Lowain and Co. in their intro? They ate some Valentine's Day chocolate she made for Gran.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: For her "Butterfly Effect" Stance System, the Kagura stance and Genji stance are each indicated by red and blue butterflies, respectively.
  • Counter-Attack: "Freeflutter: Mugenkagura" briefly puts her in a defensive stance which makes her automatically perform a rising slash after the opponent hits her. However, the slash can still be performed after a long delay even if she's not hit.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: With a Stance System that toggles all her basic attacks and Skills, Narmaya has one of the most varied movesets among the roster, which equates to a high execution barrier that encourages memorizing what she can do and when to switch stances in order to play her effectively. Her "Dawnfly: Transient Dash" adds more complexity by letting her switch to the other stance during and after her dash attacks. She has above-average speed, but her attacks generally have slow speed and/or low damage per slash, which make her difficult at pokes and have to rely more on combos.
  • Flash Step: "Dawnfly: Transient" makes her dash so quickly, she leaves a trail of butterflies behind her. Its medium and heavy versions would even make her magically appear and disappear via pink butterflies near the end of her dash.
  • Leitmotif: "Butterfly Girl", an instrumental remix of her Image Song single from the Granblue gacha game.
  • Morph Weapon: Although she uses a katana by default, Narmaya can briefly shift her weapon into either a double-sided spear or a jagged cleaver for the heavy attacks of her Dawnfly and Freeflutter stances, respectively.
  • Parrying Bullets: "Dawnfly: Setsuna" is a slash attack that can neutralize projectiles.
  • Stance System: Narmaya's core gameplay revolves around her "Butterfly Effect" unique action which toggles her moveset and skills between her Freeflutter and Dawnfly stances.

Soriz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_soriz.png
All-Crushing Fist
Versus

An old fighter who's eager to see a lot of cute girls. Although he has a habit of doing perverted antics like peeking at hot springs, he also wants to protect women from harm, a chivalrous pervert, if you will. If his muscular build didn't make it obvious, he also has great physical strength, capable of shattering rocks or delivering destructive punches with ease.

Soriz is a rushdown fighter who can overwhelm the opponent in a flurry of powerful punches and kicks.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: In a fighting game where almost everyone has a weapon, Soriz proves all you need is a pair of strong fists.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Being a martial artist, Soriz is suited for close combat and has countless attacks that leave him plus-on-block to keep a strong offense going.
  • Counter-Attack: Soriz's unique move allows him to armour through enemy attacks and follow up with "Reactive Muscles" which pushes the opponent to the ground and makes them unable to act for a short amount of time.
  • Golden Super Mode: He's covered in a golden fiery Battle Aura when his "Macho Ultimatum" Super Mode is active.
  • Immune to Flinching: "Muscle Fury" acts as a sort of super armored counter move with the "Reactive Muscles" follow up.
  • Leitmotif: "Macho Ultimatum", a remix of Eugen, Soriz and Jin's Image Song single "Song of the Three Men" from the Granblue gacha game.
  • Super Mode: Soriz's Super Skybound Art "Macho Ultimatum" has him strip down to a fundoshi in a powered up state where his moves are amplified and his defense is enhanced.

Sky Realm Wanderer
Versus

The female counterpart of Gran (in reference to the original Granblue gacha where the player can choose the gender of the Grandcypher Captain), who mostly shares the same qualities and good-natured personality as him.

However, the Fighting Game spin-off Versus has put on a twist regarding the two; Djeeta is an alternate continuity version of Gran, and she has lived through battles that Gran isn't aware of or haven't experienced at the time being. Namely, Djeeta's story touches on the events of the "What Makes The Sky Blue" trilogy arc of the Granblue gacha.

  • Alternate Self: Djeeta is an alternate continuity version of Gran; she's also the Grandcypher Captain (and a Singularity) who went through the same backstory of meeting Lyria and Katalina before setting out on a journey. The twist is that she's introduced late in Versus and her story recounts the events of the "What Makes The Sky Blue" story arc from the Granblue gacha game. Hilarity and confusion initially ensue when she's drawn into the same plane of existence as Gran. It's also shown through gameplay means, as she starts off with abilities that Gran didn't have yet, such as conjuring the ten Revenant Weapons.
  • Ascended Meme: Much like her anime episode, Djeeta's existence lives and breathes the in-joke of the Granblue community that she's the avatar of whaling. Case in point, whereas Gran is using pretty standard stuff, save for Reginleiv implying a "free player at a high level", Djeeta rolls in with attacks specifically accessible from the "Conquerer of the Eternals" variant— indicating a whole lot of time and a whole lot of resources sunk in.
  • Assist Character: Djeeta is doing most of the fighting, but Lyria appears to summon Proto Bahamut during her Super Skybound Art.
  • Blow You Away: She uses the green wind element in his attacks, like empowering her sword strikes and sending forward a gust projectile.
  • Charged Attack:
    • Unlike Gran, Djeeta's "Reginleiv" hadoken projectile can either be fired normally with a tap, or be charged for a stronger version before it's launched. The latter variant is specifically named "Reginleiv: Recidive".
    • Djeeta also has a similarly-named "Overdrive Surge" move like Gran, but it functions just like his "Power Raise" unique action; an attack that can be held for more damage, with the charge being stored through levels and indicated via colors. However, she has a different attack animation (a jump and downward kick) and it lacks a Hit Stop effect upon impact.
  • Charge Meter: "Overdrive Surge" can be held for more damage. But if the attack is not yet launched, the pent-up charge is visually indicated as a color-coded mist on Djeeta's upper body, vaguely resembling a Battle Aura.
  • Leitmotif: "The Same Blue Sky", a remix of "Over the Sky", Djeeta's shared image song with Gran, Lyria and Vyrn from the Granblue gacha game.
  • Multi-Melee Master: If performed correctly, "Eternal Ascendancy" makes her summon the ten Revenant Weapons that represent the weapon types of Granbluenote  to attack the opponent with each one of them before delivering a Kamehame Hadoken.
  • Shotoclone: Djeeta has the archetypal fireball projectile and invincible uppercut moves in the form of "Reginleiv" and "Rising Sword", respectively. But unlike a traditional traveling kick (which Gran has), Djeeta instead trades it with close-ranged forward pressure using her two-input "Vorpal Blade" skill.
  • Some Dexterity Required: Specific button presses are needed to perform the extended full combo of "Eternal Ascendancy", though this only applies to the Technical Input method (because the Simple Input method instead lets the game do it for you automatically as an Anti-Frustration Feature).

    Zooey

Zooey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_zooey.png
Arbiter of the Skies
Versus

Also known as Grand Order, Zooey is the individual who watches over the world to ensure its proper balance.

Zooey is a keepaway fighter who uses her long sword attacks and dragon familiars to lock down the opponent. She has a unique mechanic in the form of her "Dragon Gauge" which can be spent to have her dragon, Lyrn, perform different attacks all costing different amounts of the gauge.

  • Elemental Powers: An odd case where Zooey is treated as a Light-elemental during her RPG Mode boss battles (which is a nod to her very first playable version's element in the Granblue gacha) despite some of her special moves being electric-based and her dragon familiars having a breath attack that uses fire.
  • HP to One: When her HP is reduced to a certain threshold, Grand Order Zooey is scripted to unleash Conjuction, which will forcefully turn you and your partner's HP to 1. You're basically required to have a healing support skill like Panacea in order to keep fighting afterwards.
  • Lawful Stupid: Takes this attitude during Episodes 41 to 45. It doesn't matter that they are running on limited time, that Gran and Djeeta would stand a better chance together against Beelzebub, or that it would not change the situation in the Sky Realm, the only thing that matters for her is that there are two Singularities and that upsets the balance, and thus one of them must die. Fortunately, she is shaken off of this attitude by the crew.
  • Leitmotif: "Peacemaker's Wings", a remix of "Higher Yet Do the Astrals Dwell" (the background music of her Grand Order raid boss fight from the Granblue gacha game).
  • Promoted to Playable: Zooey initially had NPC appearances in the Lumacie Archipelago and final chapters of RPG Mode before she became playable as a DLC character.
  • The Worf Effect: Granblue lore has previously established that she's a special and incredibly powerful Primal who's charged with keeping the balance of the world. Versus plays this up even more so when she loses to Belial and Beelzebub, and both are aware of her role, but don’t take her seriously in the slightest.

    Belial

Belial

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_belial.png
Archangel of Cunning
Versus

A cunning fallen angel. Belial is one of the major recurring villains of the "What Makes The Sky Blue" trilogy arc, and the mastermind behind the spread of the Exia that brainwashed skyfarers during the events of Versus. He has seemingly teamed up with Beelzebub to cause destruction, but even the latter isn't fully aware of what Belial actually plans.

  • A Twinkle in the Sky: His Super Skybound Art turns the opponent into a twinkle in the sky that promptly explodes into a blazing star.
  • The Battle Didn't Count: As per Arc System Works tradition, one fighter's lose pose is always smugly lying down on the ground, not giving a damn about the loss. In this game, it's Belial who certainly can take the punishment as a Primal.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: It's clearly evident from his combat dialogue that Belial enjoys getting hurt just as much as he enjoys hurting others.
  • Confusion Fu: A large part of his fighting style. Many of his moves have delayed startup or ambiguous animations that make it difficult for his opponent to tell exactly what he's going do.
  • Counter-Attack: "Give Daddy Some Sugar" has him walk towards the opponent and automatically stomp on them if anything but a throw "hits" him. This even works against projectiles.
  • Did Not See That Coming: Belial got a little too ahead of himself during Episode 50 of RPG Mode. Everything was going according to plan with the exception of one thing, Beelzebub, who was enraged at the fact that Belial survived and at the Captain for defeating him, if Belial had played his cards correctly then he and Bubs would have double teamed the crew and probably defeated them. However Belial, being Belial chose immediate self-gratification and started taunting the Astral-Primarch hybrid, causing the would be king of the skies to do something that Belial truly wasn't expecting: Team up with the crew, which led to his defeat and Lucilius' awakening too early, with the latter forcing Belial to the rift between dimensions to fully awake him.
  • Double Entendre: Just like in the original Granblue game, Belial regularly says a lot of perverted jokes and sexual innuendos whenever possible. For example he says "This is gonna be the climax to end all climaxes!" in a cutscene of RPG Mode, almost every single match-up interaction involving him has a fitting innuendo depending on his opponent, while his unique action is named "Give Daddy Some Sugar".
  • Grapple Move: While all of the cast can perform all sorts of standard grabs, Belial also has a command walk that leads into a grab if timed right.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: If he finishes an opponent with "Anagenesis", the next cutscene shows Belial (from the victim's point of view) stomp on their head to humiliate them further.
  • Multi-Slot Character: The game has two different versions of Belial: regular Belial and Avatar Belial (aka. Belial implanting the Versus Core into himself and turning One-Winged Angel in the process).
  • Promoted to Playable: Belial is one of the two main antagonists in RPG Mode before he became playable as a Season 2 DLC character. Versus also notably marks the first time he's fully playable in the Granblue franchise, as he was originally a villain NPC and a Summon in the gacha game.
  • Troll: His "Give Daddy Some Sugar" unique action makes him walk towards the opponent with his arms spread out to mock them. If anything but a throw hits him in this state, he dodges the attack and stomps on the opponent's head.

    Cagliostro

Cagliostro (with Ouroboros)

Founder of Alchemy
Versus

The founder of Alchemy within the world of Granblue. Despite her cute appearance, Cagliostro is in fact, a powerful individual who has lived very long enough thanks to her backup bodies where she can transfer her soul to. She's also accompanied by her familiar Ouroboros, a pair of giant red and blue snakes.

Versus touches on the fact that Cagliostro was the one who successfully managed to seal Beelzebub away to a different dimension (a nod to the events of "What Makes The Sky Blue"). With Beelzebub's return, this begs the question of how he managed to escape in the first place, and if Cagliostro can repeat what she did before.

  • Charged Attack: Her "Conjure (Charge)" unique skill creates a floating rock that can be charged for up to five levels, though if the button is released early, the charge level is still kept and can be continued with the same input. It's a reason why there's a different input for launching the rock as a projectile.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: She can conjure boulders to smash the opponent with or create constructs that she interacts with.
  • Leitmotif: "The Prettiest Alchemist", a remix of her Image Song single "It would be better to create a cute girl than create the world over 7 days" from the Granblue gacha game.
  • Teleportation: Her "Spare Body" unique skill lets her conjure a spare body in her place while she teleports in a short distance from it.
  • Trap Master: Her core gameplay focuses on spreading traps and manipulating the opponent's position. "Collapse" conjures a floating rock that follows her which can be charged and fired anytime, "Mehen" plants traps in the ground or in mid-air which will attack the opponent on contact, "Calculated" conjures a spear from the ground and its position varies depending on its version, and her "Ars Magna" Skybound Art briefly draws the opponent towards the attack's center if it hits.

The servant of an ancient line of Erune loyalty, specifically the Fox Clan. Yuel is equipped with dual swords and Foxflames (which lets her engulf her swords in flames). She's the best friend of Societte, the white-haired heiress of said royalty. Not only are they able to utilize the Foxflames, they can also perform ritual dances in combat.

Yuel is a stance fighter who weaves between rushdown and close-ranged mix-ups using her signature Third Dance. This ability give her a full second set of normals and a unique counter attack that repels normal attacks automatically.

  • Assist Character: Her Super Skybound Art calls in Societte
  • Battle Couple: She performs her Super Skybound Art alongside Societte. And if they finish the opponent off with the move, Yuel will collapse from exhaustion onto Societte's lap in a manner based on their summer variant portrait (the very intimate one).
  • Counter-Attack: During Yuel's "Third Dance" stance, she will automatically dodge and counter any attack that does not hit low or is not a throw with a quick slash.
  • Dance Battler: She incorporates her love of dance into rhythmic and graceful attacks.
  • Dash Attack: "Starlit Sky" has Yuel dash forward with a multi-hitting blaze.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: While she utilizes fire in this game, her design comes from her water variant in Granblue
  • Leitmotif: "Dance of a Thousand Years", a remix of her and Societte's Image Song single "Soku Hana no Mai" from the Granblue gacha game.
  • Playing with Fire: All of her abilities utilize Foxflames to empower her attacks, ranging from fiery sword swipes to engulfing herself in flame to charge forward.
  • Shoryuken: "Hien: Homuragaeshi" has Yuel twirl up with a multi-hitting blade spin.
  • Sword Plant: Yuel's victory animation has her plant her swords in the ground before doing some pose.

  • Elemental Powers: Ambiguous given that Eustace is labeled as Earth in RPG mode, with some of his moveset, his appearance, and both Skybound Arts being based on his dark version.
  • Pinball Projectile: "Slow Kill" fires a ball of electricity towards the ground that ricochets upward
  • Shock and Awe: His rifle attacks all produce electric effects. His Super Skybound Art creates a full-on lightning storm.
  • Sword and Gun: Fights with a combat knife in one hand and a rifle in the other.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Eustace's seal weapon, Flamek, turns into one of these, complete with a transformation sequence and audible chargeup sound. Subverted in that the brunt of the attack is actually directed at the sky, which then rains down electricity on the opponent.
  • Why Am I Ticking?: The Heavy version of "Rat Race" attaches an explosive to the opponent that either ticks down or can be set off by Eustace's projectiles.

Vira is a highly offensive fighter that can enhance herself mid-fight into her powerful Luminiera Form. This form grants several new attacks and boosts to her attack stats, as well as unique mobility tools like an air-dash.

  • Battle Aura: Her Super Mode is visually accompanied by small flickering green flames surrounding her.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Her facial expressions consist almost exclusively of either these or outright Slasher Smile, bordering on Nightmare Face territory. It has a rather jarring contrast with her demeanor in certain battle dialogues.
  • Super Mode: If her "Luminiera Merge" Skybound Art is activated or her unique action "Blade of Light" successfully grabs the opponent, Vira will transform into a state where she wears a different armor, all her skills are enhanced, and she gains access to two super moves other than her normal Super Skybound Art.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lunalu_versus.png

A Harvin who can make her artworks come to life. She's also fond of romance between males, and would often draw pictures depicting that if given the chance.

  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Lunalu, added to the roster as part of a free update, noticeably stands out amongst the rest of the cast; she herself doesn't fight, but rather creates a random character from the roster via her Art Initiates Life abilities, which the player then controls, making her a Ditto Fighter akin to the likes of Eleven and Mokujin. Lunalu herself stands in the background, cheering her creation on.
  • Promoted to Playable: Lunalu first appeared as a cameo in the background of the Auguste beach stage before she became a post-launch playable character.

Introduced in Rising

    Anila

Anila

Voiced by: Aoi Yūki (Japanese), Leona Renee (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_anila.png
Guardian of the South-Southwest

Since the Granblue gacha game, Anila was the first ever Divine General introduced and made playable. The Divine Generals are shrine maidens themed around the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, with Anila representing the Ram.

Anila is an all-rounder with excellent space control thanks to her naginata and being able to send out her cute sheepies to charge the opponent.

  • Assist Character: Her sheep aid her in combat, be it charging forward as a projectile, letting her charge atop them, or stampeding the opponent for her Super Skybound Art.
  • Pun: Some of Anila's skills and unique actions are wordplays related to her sheep Animal Motifs or farming, such as "Flock to the Future" (which is in itself, a reference to Back to the Future), "Over the Fence", and "Ramification".
  • Shotoclone: Keeping in line with her being a walking reference to Terry Bogard, she boasts a well-rounded that involves the standard shoto archetype between a projectile, charging attack and anti-air reversal.

    Siegfried

Siegfried

Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (Japanese), Jordan Reynolds (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_siegfried.png
Dragon Slayer

One of the four Dragon Knights and the captain of the Order of the Black Dragon. He fights using a massive sword and is known as the Dragonslayer.

Siegfried is a hard-hitting all-rounder with devastating damage per hit thanks to his greatsword. He possesses a unique mechanic, "Manigance", that lets him sacrifice his own health to further increase his damage output, adding risk for even greater reward.

  • Cast from Hit Points: Using Manigance grants all of Siegfried's attacks for a short time at the cost of his health.
  • Sword Beam: For "Nelah Nav", Siegfried fires off a slow but big projectile from his sword, one that he can alter the timing of for different strategies.

    Grimnir

Grimnir

Voiced by: Megumi Ogata (Japanese), Griffin Burns (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_grimnir.png
Mad Cyclone

The disciple of the Wind Primarch Raphael. Despite being a powerful warrior, Grimnir is also a dorky, hammy individual who loves to speak in purple prose and flowery monologue.

Grimnir is a highly evasive fighter that can alter his momentum by placing "Wind Crests" around the stage that he can reposition to. His mix of good ranged tools and mobile attacks allow him to always keep the opponent just out of reach and create complex routes for combos and mix-ups.

  • Blow You Away: He is a wind unit after all; he can throw tornadoes, dash around in the air, and engulf himself in a tempest to strike the opponent.
  • Spectacular Spinning: Two of his skills make him spin around while creating a tornado around his body. And all of his wind powers and projectiles spin in some form.
  • Super Mode: "Grace of the Radiant" allows him to quickly dash around even without the need for Gale Crests. This state slowly decays over time, but is also shortened significantly with each dash.

    Nier

Nier (with Death)

Voiced by:
Nier: Noriko Shitaya (Japanese), Jenny Yokobori (English)
Death: Michiko Neya (Japanese), Laura Faye Smith (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_nier.png
Misery's Beloved

The pactbearer of the Arcarum Primal Beast Death. Together, they represent the fourth and thirteenth Major Arcana Tarot Cards, Lovers and Death respectively. Having been resented by her family of magicians, Nier came across a forbidden tome which granted her the dangerous "power over life". This caused her to experiment on, and later kill men just to master her newfound magic hoping that it would grant her approval from her parents. Oh, and these male victims were mostly her former boyfriends.

Nier died but was later revived by Death, and the two formed a pact hoping to create a world where the both of them could be loved. The Grandcypher crew and its captain eventually recruited Nier as a friend, though it turns out, it's not that easy to reform her. In Rising, she still clings to that relationship, but Gran and Djeeta find it difficult to believe what she's implying due to them not having any clear recollection about it.

  • Difficult, but Awesome: Nier was already a difficult, but awesome character to use in the original Granblue gacha, and her Fighting Game debut is no different. Here, she's a Puppet Fighter who attacks in tandem with Death, with all of her special moves controlling the latter in some fashion. If Death is incapacitated by either getting hit by the opponent or when Nier burns through her stocks of Love's Redemption, she will be forced to fight with no special moves or supers and subpar normals. However, when Death is available, she has among the highest damage and mixup potential of the whole cast, a frame one reversal move with super armor that she can combo out of, and surprisingly good normals when Death is unsummoned but not incapacitated.
  • Jerkass: Many of her versus quotes greatly capitalize on the fact that she's a frighteningly cold and cruel girl who has no problem saying some seriously nasty stuff against other people.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Says this nearly word for word as her win quotes against Gran and Djeeta.
  • Nightmare Face: She flashes a horrifying one in her Super Skybound Art, which doesn't help when it's coupled with her special quote when using it against Gran and Djeeta.
    Nier: Liar... YOU SWORE, GRAN/DJEETA!!!
  • "Not So Different" Remark: She invokes this trope with Seox and Vira, noting how the former went through the same hell as her, and the latter really wanting to be loved by someone. Both of them reject this, with Seox wanting to stop Nier from going too far, and Vira refutes that Nier selfishly begs for love, while she selflessly offers her love.
  • Puppet Fighter: Nier's playstyle involves working in tandem with Death, positioning her in strategic positions to sandwich the enemy between the two's attacks.
  • Taking the Bullet: Played for Laughs. When Nier is hit by Ladiva's Maximum Love Bomber Skybound Art, Death takes the attack in her place, to Nier's comical shock.

Introduced as DLC: Wave 1

    Lucilius

Lucilius

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese), Sean Chiplock (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gbvsr_lucilius.png
Wings of the Apocalypse

Yet another recurring villain from the "What Makes The Sky Blue" arc of the Granblue gacha, who wished to become the strongest of all creation, so that Lucilius himself could destroy the creations of God.

He never made much of a direct presence in Versus per se, but he still somehow played a role behind-the-scenes thanks to Belial's actions. This changed when Rising made him an on-screen active villain (and a playable one, at that).

  • Horrifying the Horror: One of his pre-battle lines against Nier has the mentally disturbed Evoker worriedly realize that Death is actually terrified of Lucilius, prompting her to ask what he is.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: As a playable character in Versus Rising, Lucilius is the only character who does not utilize Plus Skills. All of his Skills have extremely long cooldowns by default, but this is mitigated by a special "Blade Meter" that increases whenever he lands a Skill or uses his Unique Attack, Orbital Resonance. When the Blade Meter is maxed, Lucilius's cooldowns become very fast, allowing him to aand devastating combos and giving him absurd space control.
  • Promoted to Playable: In Versus, Lucilius first appeared in the Arcade mode ending screen of Beelzebub, then his presence was mentioned as a Sequel Hook in the final chapters of the RPG Mode. In Rising, he's initially fought as a secret True Final Boss of Arcade mode, and is finally made into a Season 1 playable DLC character.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He was sealed away when the story of Versus started (as a nod to him and Belial being trapped in a void at the end of the "What Makes the Sky Blue III: 000" event from the gacha game). He gets let out in Rising, only to be sealed again, this time with a jailer to keep him there.
  • True Final Boss: In Rising, if you meet certain conditions after beating Avatar Belial as the Final Boss of Arcade Mode, Lucilius will appear and challenge you.

    2B

2B (with Pod 042, Operator 6O and 9S)

Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa (Japanese), Kira Buckland (English)

Pod 042 voiced by: Hiroki Yasumoto (Japanese), D.C. Douglas (English)

Operator 6O voiced by: Keiko Isobe (Japanese), Cassandra Lee Morris (English)

9S voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (Japanese), Kyle McCarley (English)

Origin: NieR: Automata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/198px_2b_rising.png
Glory To Mankind

The main protagonist of NieR: Automata, an android named "YoRHa Unit No. 2 Type B", or simply "2B''. She hails from an alternate version of Earth set in the year 11945 AD, wherein the planet is caught in a war between the YoRHa Units meant to reclaim the planet for the last remnants of humanity from the Machines created by alien invaders.

  • Assist Character: Pod 042. He directly attacks the opponent with various projectiles in several of her specials, and he writes the combat logs that serve as her win quotes in the results screen.
  • Dual Wielding: Retains the use of her starting weapons from her source game, a pair of katanas - the smaller Virtuous Contract and the larger Virtuous Treaty.
  • The Comically Serious: Much of the humor from her interactions with the cast is derived from how she maintains her stoicism in the face of the highly eclectic and colorful cast of Granblue Fantasy. The only characters who elicit any confusion are Yuel for being a Little Bit Beastly, Lowain and his brofam for being too absurd even for her, Siegfried as his title implies the existence of dragons, which carries vastly different implications in the Nier games, and Ferry for displaying no actual signs of life.
  • Guest Fighter: She has the honor of joining the roster of Rising as part of its first season of DLC, making this her 2nd crossover appearance in a fighting game after Soulcalibur VI.
  • Leitmotif: Her theme is a battle remix of "Weight of the World", the end credit theme of NieR: Automata. Specifically, the "FR Neuveau" version of the song performed by the primary vocalist of her home series, Emi Evans, as she had done prior work on one of Zooey's battle themes for the mobile game, "Armageddon".
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Notably deviates from how many characters function, befitting her status as a guest:
    • 2B lacks the traditional cooldown for her heavy special moves, and the normal Granblue-styled skill icons are replaced with a skill gauge styled after Automata. Many of her specials consume blocks from the said gauge, which regenerates over time or by successfully landing her chain combos.
    • She lacks the newly introduced dash attack mechanic, and unlike the rest of the cast, her normals are not proximity-based, meaning that her attacks will function similarly regardless of how far or close she is to her opponent.
    • Her chain combo system is unique in that depending on the button that she uses to begin her string, pressing another button from a different sequence will lead to a different ender. The chain combos also can be performed even on whiff, whereas the rest of the cast can only perform the rest on hit or block.
  • Pet the Dog: Gran and Djeeta are the only characters Pod 042 suggests sparing before combat and 2B's victory outro has Pod 042 encourage them to continue their quest against fate.

    Vane

Vane

Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi (Japanese), Zeno Robinson (English)

One of the four Dragon Knights, the vice-captain of the Order of the White Dragon, and Lancelot's childhood friend.

  • Promoted to Playable: He first appeared as a cameo in Lancelot's Versus Arcade Mode ending screen (albeit only his hair and back are shown) before he was announced as a playable DLC character in Rising.

    Beatrix

Beatrix

Voiced by: Aya Hirano (Japanese), Jennifer Losi (English)

The outspoken member of The Society, mostly wearing blue armor in contrast to Zeta's red. She wields the Embarasque Sword which grants her more power the riskier her situation becomes.

  • Promoted to Playable: Beatrix was an NPC in the original Versus. She would become playable for the sequel as part of its first DLC season.

Non-Playable Characters

Characters or entities who appear in the story (with varying degrees of plot significance), but aren't playable any form.

Introduced in Versus

    Colossus

Colossus

A giant fire-elemental automaton built in Fremel Island.

  • Advancing Boss of Doom: In RPG Mode, reducing Colossus' HP to certain thresholds may cause it to walk towards the right side of the arena, capable of damaging your characters with its footsteps, and you are also forced to move to the rightmost side when this happens. This is just the early indicator that it may unleash its signature Dimension Cleave afterwards. Inversely, damaging Colossus enough times (especially if there's a meter prompt on-screen) forces it to move backwards a bit.
  • Leitmotif: "Colossus" is an amped-up remix of the eponymous giant Primal Beast's theme from the Granblue gacha game serving as the background music for its main story / RPG Mode boss fights.
  • Warm-Up Boss: Colossus is fought in the early chapters of RPG Mode, and one of its main gimmicks has it unleash its trademark Dimensional Cleave attack which can One-Hit Kill you if you don't avoid it. It has a fairly lengthy animation and limited range, giving you time to move to the edge and avoid getting hit. Later on, the raid boss fight against Proto Bahamut has a similar Skyfall attack which is guaranteed to one-hit-kill you as well, but poses a greater risk as you'll have to quickly cram your characters inside Lyria's dome because it would hit the rest of the screen.

    Rosetta

Rosetta / Rose Queen

Voiced by: Rie Tanaka (Japanese), Allegra Clark (English)

A Primal Beast of plants, roses and thorns who originally resided in the forests of the Lumacie Archipelago, but became an ally and crewmember of the Grandcypher.

  • Attack Reflector: Rose Queen's barrier will deflect any normal projectile back to damage the one who fired it. Fortunately, projectiles fired by Skybound Arts and Super Skybound Arts bypass this gimmick and won't be deflected because such super moves are needed to dispel her barrier in the first place.
  • Leitmotif: "Rose Queen", her eponymous boss battle track (which originated from the Granblue gacha game) serving as the background music for her main story / RPG Mode boss fights.
  • Puzzle Boss: As a raid boss battle in RPG Mode, Rosetta (in her Rose Queen form) has defensive gimmicks which require you to dispel her barrier with a Skybound Art or Super Skybound Art before you could properly damage her.
  • Threshold Guardian: Just before you head to Pandemonium, Rosetta challenges the Grandcypher crew to a fight to see if they are strong enough to proceed further.
  • Warm-Up Boss: In RPG Mode, Rose Queen's gimmick as a Puzzle Boss merely serves as a prelude to a later raid boss, Beelzebub, who also requires you to unleash a Skybound Art to break their defenses. At least in Rose Queen's case, there are red roses and blue butterflies that help replenish your SBA Gauge; In Beelzebub's case, you'll have to build up your gauge the harder way.

Introduced in Rising

    Rein (UNMARKED SPOILER WARNING)

Rein / Versusia

Voiced by: Maki Kawase (Japanese), Elizabeth Maxwell (English)

A mysterious, newly-introduced character in the Story Mode of Rising. She appears to have some connection to Gran and Djeeta, making many of the Grandcypher crew members suspicious as to who she really is.

In actuality, Rein is the time-displaced, long-lost mother of both Gran and Djeeta. She was originally a priestess of Bahamut, eventually developing a strong enough spiritual link with the dragon's destructive half to the point where she was selected as a vessel for its will. Her true identity is that of Versusia, a divine guardian who serves directly as an emissary of the dragon god, eliminating any threats and irregularities to the world her master wishes to maintain. Due to the whims of Lucilius, Belial, and Beelzebub, she ended up split into two halves: the Versus Core and a reincarnation of her old human self, albeit changed due to her link to Bahamut. Her manifestation as Rein is in itself an irregularity, purposefully orchestrated in order to keep Sandalphon, the Supreme Primarch, from opposing Lucilius's plan. She joins the crew of the Grandcypher in order to retrieve the other half of herself from Beelzebub.

  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Of the Skyrealm itself, as she herself states once reawakened as Versusia. Specifically, she represents the "destruction" part of Bahamut's design for the world. Her purpose is to eliminate or otherwise incapacitate any and all those deemed "irregularities" who threaten the world, and also resolve the destinies of those deemed as singularities.
  • Canon Foreigner: Rising marks her debut in the Granblue franchise, though she was teased beforehand during an earlier livestream event and in the Story Trailer before the game's release.
  • Last Episode, New Character: She makes her debut in the 3rd part of the Story Mode, which is introduced in Rising, and leaves teh story on a major cliffhanger.
  • Missing Mom: The original Granblue gacha game barely delved into who the Grandcypher Captain's mother was, apart from some minor references or allusions to her. Rising reveals that the time-displaced Rein is their mother, whose appearance not resembling Gran or Djeeta is attributed to Bahamut's power changing her hair color.
  • The Jailer: As punishment for Lucilius and Belial attempting to corrupt the laws of causality, Versusia forces them into doing battle with her forever as the gateway to Point Zero, Lucilius's pocket dimension, closes and seals them all inside it, effectively making them her prisoners.
