Allies

    Rolan

Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya (Japanese), Sean Chiplock (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rolan_1.png

The resident vicar of Folca, who also works as the town's "Mr. Fix-It".

  • Big Good: As an Astral who works with the crew throughout the game, he proves to be the biggest force of good in the story, and directly opposes Lilith and her plans.
  • Becoming the Mask: As kind and helpful as Rolan is: He initially only helped skydwellers in order to gain their trust, so that it would be easier to conduct his research.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He built the transceivers that he, the party and Rolan's other allies use to communicate. Also, he is very good at repairing things.
  • God Was My Co-Pilot: Rolan, the resident Vicar and handyman from Folca, is actually an Astral, one of the godlike beings that lorded over humanity in ancient times and created the Primal Beasts. As opposed to fellow Astral Lilith, however, Rolan has grown to love humanity and fights to protect them. While he attempts to aid the Grandcypher crew from the sidelines at first, when the true scope of Lilith's plans come to light, he begins to play a more active role in thwarting her.
  • Given Name Reveal: His true name is Astraeus.
  • Hates Being Nicknamed: Vyrn, as per usual, coins a nickname ("Fix-It Dude") for him. Rolan doesn't take well to it and ends up passive-aggressively emphasizing his name whenever he talks to the dragon.
  • Lovable Nerd: Rolan is just a huge nerd when it comes to technology, including airships and weapons, and will gush about them scientifically when the opportunity arises.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Befitting his status as an inventor and fixer, he always wears a pair of glasses.
  • Underestimating Badassery: As he notes in a journal entry, Rolan did not expect a random, ragtag crew of skyfarers to be so capable.

    Historiath

Voiced by: Yoshiko Sakakibara (Japanese), Laura Post (English)

  • Dark Is Not Evil: She wears all black but is firmly on the heroes' side.
  • An Ice Person: She primarily casts ice magic and is aligned with an ice primal beast.
  • Lady of Black Magic: A beautiful and elegant mage who can cast devastating ice magic.

    Zathba

Voiced by: Tesshō Genda (Japanese), Keythe Farley (English)

The head of the Family Zathba, an underground faction in Seedhollow that works to keep the peace in the town.
  • Cool Shades: He sports a cool pair of shades that serve to add to his professional nature.
  • Gunship Rescue: He and his boys show up in the decisive fight against Angra Mainyu to provide air support when the party is about to be overwhelmed by a mass of enemies. They even bring Excavallion's cannon with them!
  • Information Broker: A seemingly shady one as well, but he has Rolan's trust.

The Church of Avia

    Id

Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda (Japanese), Robbie Daymond (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/id_9.png

The adopted son of Lilith, and one of her top generals in the Church of Avia.

  • Anti-Villain: Id is very protective of Lyria and genuinely believes that Lilith has good reasons for what she is doing. This eventually leads to his Heel–Face Turn when he realizes that the Church of Avia's faith and Lilith's promises of "Salvation" were a complete fabrication to bend the masses to her will.
  • BFS: He wields a greatsword wrapped in bandages.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Averted Trope. The game's ending sees Bahamut Versa sealed away in a separate dimension, but he still keeps the Soul Link he has with it without turning into The Berserker, like he did in his final fight with the crew. As a result, not only can he transform more easily and frequently into his dragon form, he retains his intelligence, allowing him to fight in said form with greater finese. If anything, he came out of the ordeal even stronger than he was before.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While he is a dark element character and harbors an immense destructive power inside of him, he eventually ends up using said power for good. However, Id's power draws the attention of Seofon, who realizes just how catastrophic his power can potentially become, and plots to kill him in his Fate Episode before said outcome can pass. Thankfully, Tweyen and the crew are able to stop Seofon in time before he can do so.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Id will join the Grandcypher crew at various points in the story, but leaves after Lilith forcibly transforms him into Bahamut Versa. He rejoins at the end of the game on a long-term basis.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: The heroes conclude his willpower is too strong to be fully consumed by Bahamut Versa, so they keep trying to reach out to him during the final battle. They succeed, and he breaks free of the Primal God's grip, joining the party for the final stretch of the fight.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He doesn't realize until later on that he was ordered not to kill the Captain due to their life-link with Lyria, and starts becoming conflicted about his loyalty to Lilith.
  • Morality Pet: Lyria becomes one for him when she was captured and brainwashed to follow the Church of Avia's will, declaring to protect her.
  • No Social Skills: Due to his upbringing as Lilith's adopted son and her top enforcer, Id never learned how to properly interact with others outside strict military protocol.
  • Red Herring: The player is lead to believe that Id is merely brainwashed by the same means as Lyria. As it turns out, his attachment to Lilith is real and the mind-sealer collar he is wearing is merely sealing Bahamut Versa within him.
  • Super Mode: As a playable character, filling up his dragon gauge will make him transform into a different form with increased offenses. He also has access to a second one called Godmight, which reverts him back to human form, but further amps up his offenses.
  • Vague Age: When he's first encountered, his journal entry lists his age as "Unknown", which adds to the mystery for himself as an antagonist. After he officially joins the party, everything about him in the journal is revealed, which includes his age as 21.

    Gallanza

Voiced by: Kōichi Yamadera (Japanese), Crispin Freeman (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gallanza.png

The leader of the Silver Wolf Corps, and one of Avia's top generals.

  • Big Brother Instinct: He genuinely cares for Id like a little brother, and attacks Tweyen in her Fate Episode when he thinks she's plotting to kill him.
  • Blood Knight: Gallanza constantly craves a good fight, and will jump at any opportunity to do so. He turns against Lilith when he finds out that her true plans would bring destruction to the skies, denying him the chance to find stronger opponents.
  • Know When to Fold Them: While he loves nothing more than a good fight, Gallanza is no mindless berserker. He relents from fighting the party the first time when Id gestures him to stand down, and after fighting them later, he is willing to retreat in the face of Maglielle's argument, though he makes it clear he will return for a rematch.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: He may be a vicious Blood Knight, but he holds a soft spot for his mother, and enjoys the rice balls she makes.
  • Male Might, Female Finesse: Gallanza is the Might to Maglielle's Finesse, being a rowdy juggernaut who constantly gets close and unleashes wide and explosive attacks, compared to the more elegant Maglielle who floats in the air and fires off her attacks in a more graceful manner.

    Maglielle

Voiced by: Saori Hayami (Japanese), Debi Derryberry (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maglielle.png

The leader of the Sword Veil Fellowship, and one of Avia's top generals.

  • Actress Allusion: This isn't the first time Saori Hayami voiced a graceful swordmaiden with a great love for desserts, the first one being Arciela from Final Fantasy XI.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Id calls her "Maggie".
  • Anti-Villain: Maglielle may be one of Lilith's ruthless enforcers, but she is a noble and courteous woman who is A Mother to Her Men. She also genuinely believes in the cause to bring salvation to the skies, and turns against Lilith when she finds out that Lilith lied about said salvation.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She genuinely cares for Id like a little brother, and attacks Tweyen alongside Gallanza when she thinks she's planning to kill him.
  • Lady of War: Maglielle is an elegant and composed lady who telekinetically wields her blades with flowing poise and grace.
  • A Mother to Her Men: She treats her fellow Sword Veils like family and cares for them greatly. Her Heel–Face Turn later on is partly motivated by her respect and gratitude towards the crew for sparing their lives.
  • Multi-Melee Master: Downplayed; she doesn't wield her assortment of weapons than she does use them telekinetically.
  • Sweet Tooth: She turns out to have quite the taste for desserts, particularly pancakes, and she forms a rapport with Zeta in the latter's Fate Episode over their love for sweets.

    Lilith

Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima (Japanese), Maggie Robertson (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lilith_38.png

The head of the Church of Avia.

  • Big Bad: As the head of the Church of Avia she is the primary threat the crew of the Grandcypher face in the game.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: She gives her generals strict orders not to kill Gran/Djeeta, due to their life-link with Lyria, whom she needs alive for her plans. However, she never actually told Id about said link, and it causes his loyalty to her to waver.
  • Continuity Nod: In the first log of the Classified Records found by opening the Curios, Lilith mentions a researcher named "L" who she suspects is working on something pertaining to the Creator. This is a likely reference to the Astral, Lucilius, and his Evil Plan mentioned in the "What Makes The Sky Blue" Story Arc of Granblue Fantasy.
  • Defiant to the End: Lilith refuses to accept defeat, even in death. After her attempt to summon Angra Mainyu is thwarted, she unleashes Bahamut Versa from within Id in a final act of defiant spite: if she can't return to the Astral Realm, she'll happily settle for unleashing a Primal Beast that will rend the Sky Realm asunder.
  • Fantastic Racism: Like her fellow Astral Lucilius, Lilith doesn't give a damn about skydwellers or mortals in general, considering them all beneath her and only useful as pawns for her plans to return home.
  • Foil: She's one to Lucilius, the primary antagonist of the "What Makes The Sky Blue" storyline. Both of them are godlike beings that are supremely arrogant and see skydwellers as little more than pawns to be used for their experiments and research. However while Lucilius is a Straw Nihilist and a narcissist with grand ambitions to destroy the Skyrealm because he hates the Omnipotent for being above him, Lilith merely finds the Skyrealm beneath her and seeks to return home to Estalucia, and is only willing to destroy it when she doesn't get her way, which involves sacrificing thousands of its inhabitants in order to do so.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Lilith lies to all her pawns and has no real intention of granting them any sort of "salvation" that doesn't involve killing them as sacrifices to Angra Mainyu just so she can open a portal to Estalucia. She's also willing to destroy an entire island and all of its inhabitants to make that happen.
  • There's No Place Like Home: Her true reason for reaching Estalucia due to her being an Astral. All her talk about "salvation" are just lies she feeds her followers, who she plans on sacrificing to reach her home.
  • Uncertain Doom: Lilith ends up taking a blow from the freshly-awakened Bahamut Versa that would most certainly kill any mortal, especially a blow that knocks someone into an empty, black void. However, keeping in mind that Lilith is an Astral, it's entirely possible that she survived and is simply sealed away in another dimension, much like her fellow Astral Lucilius.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: She invokes this on just about everyone in the Church of Avia once her true plans come into fruition. Id, Gallanza, and Maglielle are none too happy about Lilith's betrayal and work with the crew to stop her. Though even in the post-game, several remnants of the Church still remain fanatically loyal to her.

Primals

    Furycane
The primal beast of vitality, enshrined upon the eastern end of the Ainsteddo Archipelago. Driven to madness by Lilith's design, Furycane's rage stirs up the nearby monsters to a frenzy, causing destruction across the east of the archipelago and demanding that the crew and Rolan stop them.
  • Animated Armor: Looks very similar to this for most of its time in combat, with its primarily wind-composed body giving the image of a spirit inhabiting a bunch of individual armor and weapon pieces.
  • Bishōnen Line: Halfway through the fight it forgoes its armored centaur-like look for a more feminine humanoid body made of wind. Io even compares it to a magical girl transformation.
  • Destructible Armor: In both forms, pieces of armor can be peeled away from the boss through attacks. In centaur form this happens to the legs, and doing enough of this will cause Furycane to collapse as though its legs were cut off and leave them vulnerable for a time.
  • Extendable Arms: Being made of wind and a bunch of separate armor pieces, its second form is able to swing its giant sword in much wider arcs than expected through this.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To Tiamat, as a wind-based Primal who is the first to be encountered and fought in the game's story. Rackam even comments the situation reminds him of the mobile game's corresponding arc that featured Tiamat as they go through Tempeal.

    Managarmr
The primal beast of sequestration, worshiped by Historiath and her followers deep within Leautagne Island. A brainwashed Lyria sends it on a rampage just as the crew catches up to her and Id, requiring that they take it out.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: Sports a very sinister one with a hooked blade at the end, used often for sweeping attacks.
  • Flash Step: Some of its faster movements are evocative of this, turning Managarmr transparent as it quickly hops from place to place.
  • Flunky Boss: Summons several flying crystals as part of its Signature Move, sending them out to harry you with ice beams and projectiles while conducting its Speed Blitz.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Whether it normally has red eyes or otherwise, it's only a sign of a dangerous foe when the player party meets it for the first time.
  • Savage Wolf: It may be a Noble Wolf normally if Historiath and her followers may be believed, for the fight it's nothing more than this.
  • Shed Armor, Gain Speed: ZigZagged. Its secondary form dons heavy ice armor and is much more ponderously slow but gains damage reduction from the front, but it will regularly shift in and out of the armor over the course of a fight instead of simply keeping it on.
  • Speed Blitz: Its Death's Threshold attack starts this way, summoning a blizzard to first limit your movement then leaping into the blizzard to sequester itself and lay out blindingly fast dive attacks from safety.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Managarmr does not mess around on your first encounter, with highly damaging attacks and lots of ways to slow you down or freeze you solid to further bring the pain if you're not careful. Death's Threshold is also the first instance of asking the player to keep a close eye on how the the boss's attacks work, as breaking too many of the ice pillars around the arena will leave the player with no room to stand when it starts unleashing its final arena-spanning blizzard.

    Excavallion
The primal beast of fortification buried on Dahli Island.
  • Arm Cannon: Can turn its right hand into one, which given its size basically makes it a Wave-Motion Gun. Its ultimate attack is simply it aiming it at the ground, creating a massive explosion that the player needs to get away from lest it be a One-Hit KO.
  • Colossus Climb: When its legs are disabled the crew has to climb up its hunched over body to get to its core on its back.
  • Humongous Mecha: Certainly has this look, being an immensely large being made of stone and metal, complete with a whole arsenal of weapons.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: Can fire dozens of homing missiles throughout its body that can target both enemies on the ground and air.
  • Reactor Boss: In the final phase of the fight, the party has to take out Excavallion's exposed main core on its back. Excavallion being the Primal Beast of fortification, the core itself does not let itself be destroyed without a fight and starts blasting the player with excess mana and sweeping energy beams when it enters overdrive mode.

    Vulkan Bolla
The primal beast of dread which makes its home on Phondam.
  • Crystal Prison: Traps Lyria in one on its forehead, leading Id to fight against it when you first encounter them. With the imprisoned Lyria being much more pressing than any bad blood currently, Id asks the party to help him defeat the beast.
  • Geo Effects: Regularly hurls waves of lava across the islands you're fighting on, damaging and Burning anyone caught in the attack and reducing the amount of safe places to stand. Its Auxilium attack raises the lava level to consume all but a few safer bits of raised rock.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: None know what Vulkan Bolla's true form is, as it takes whatever form is needed to bring to life the fears of those it encounters.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: It is the Primal that has power over dread, so whatever fears one has, it will readily make manifest after reading their thoughts. Id's fear was not being able to protect Lyria so it manifested as a massive monster taking Lyria to entrap her at its head when she awoke it.

    Angra Mainyu

  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: You get to beat it up as Proto Bahamut.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: It can open a portal to the Astral realm, at the cost of destroying all of Zegagrande.
  • Dimension Lord: Has the power to create gateways to other dimensions though doing so requires immense energy. Lilith wants this power to create a gateway to the Astral Realm, even if doing so would destroy the Sky Realm in the process.
  • Empty Shell: Unlike the other primal beasts in the game, Angra Mainyu seems to lack a will of its own. This was a deliberate choice by the Astrals who initially used Angra solely as a gateway system to cross dimensions, only to be deemed impractical due to how much energy it required. This serves Lilith well who can easily command it and when it is nearly defeated she forces a Fusion Dance with it, becoming its will.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: Has a ton of eyes all over its body, namely its many hands.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Its attempted revival was one for Bahamut Versa.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Has a bunch of hands that are attached to it through strings of energy that it uses to cast various all range attacks, such as a couple of large hands that cast its larger spells, or its small hands which seek out and attack the party.
  • Intangibility: Part of what makes Angra Mainyu so dangerous is the fact that it exists slightly out-of-phase with physical space, often appearing semi-transparent and being untouchable by normal means. Defeating it means finding a way to bring either it or yourself and your party into the same space to physically damage it.
  • Power of the Void: It can literally erase things from existence. Or so it seems. It can also create living shadows and apparently has a hand in creating the Nihilla variant of primal bosses as well.
  • Seemingly Hopeless Boss Fight: In the first battle against Angra Mainyu, it will seemingly kill the entire party, one by one, prompting desperate, even rage-filled comments from the others. Then it eventually takes the player character and all hope seems lost, but the tides quickly turn after that.

    SPOILER CHARACTER

Bahamut Versa

  • Came Back Strong: When it is fought again in its home dimension, it has somehow grown to triple its original size and is referred to as Bahamut Versa Omega. It also gains a truly, staggeringly powerful attack called ,"primal rage".
  • Demonic Possession: Does this to Id when it is finally freed by Lilith, using his body as an anchor to the Sky Realm. When the heroes break Id free from its control it is soon forced back into its own dimension.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: If Bahamut Versa is allowed to fully charge its "Reason's Transcendence" attack, it destroys not only the party but the whole world.
  • Evil Counterpart: To the Bahamut of the Sky Realm. It is described by Rolan as the destructor to Bahamut's creator, with its sole desire being to destroy all existence.
  • Hot Wings: Bahamut Versa glides on skeletal wings that are wreathed in a purple/red energy field. Said wings can also fire light orbs or energy beams, and glow red whenever Versa prepares for its ultimate, world-ending attack.
  • Marathon Boss : As expected for the Evil Counterpart of this world's Bahamut, this thing does not go down easy. It takes a powerful sealing spell from Rolan, himself an Astral, to hold it in place long enough for the group to engage it, and even then it's a race against time. It requires a multi-phase boss fight with several DPS checks to avoid its multiple world-ending attacks. Even after it loses the Beam-O-War at the end of the battle and gets forced back into its own dimension, it breaks out one more time and starts grappling with Proto Bahamut, necessitating one more Combination Attack from the Captain and Id to finally sent it back to slumber.
  • Not Quite Dead: The final, true fight with it takes place during the postgame and ends with its body disintegrating after taking Proto Bahamut's attack head on, and its home dimension collapsing. However, Id still keeps his connection to the God Of Destruction, which grants him his Dragon Form, implying that Bahamut Versa is still somehow alive.
  • Phantom Zone: It usually resides in a sort of parallel dimension which seems to consist of little more than red and purple clouds.
  • Taking You with Me: After Id breaks free of its control, Versa it's rendered a mass of will and power with no proper anchor. So It Turns Red and starts blanketing the arena with wide-area attacks in a frenzy before charging it's Light Of The Apocalypse, trying to wipe out the whole world before it is dragged back into its home dimension.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Was sealed inside Id 15 years ago before the events of the game by Lilith, when she initially tried to summon Angra Mainyu, only for Versa to intervene.

Endgame Quest Bosses

    SPOILER CHARACTER

Pyet-A

One of the Automagods from the Moon, which Zeta and Vaseraga's weapons were designed to hunt down.
  • Attack Drone: One of its definining characteristics is the use of smaller drones that harass the players with beams and take part in its ultimate attack, chromatic arc.
  • Mini-Mecha: Pyet-A is a several-humans-tall, robotic abomination.
  • Taking You with Me: At low health, it activates its extermination sequence. Pyet-A must be destroyed by the party before the bar fills up completely.
