Fan Nickname / Granblue Fantasy Versus

Go To

Since Versus is a spin-off from an existing title, some fan nicknames from the original Granblue Fantasy were also imported here ever since Granblue fans and fighting game fans tried out the Closed Beta period. This game itself also introduced a bunch of fan nicknames, but mostly Fighting Game-related.

The Game as a whole
  • "Anime Street Fighter", "Street Fighter with Swords" - The game is compared a lot to Street Fighter due to it focusing more on being a "ground-based" Fighting Game, helped by the fact that the developers themselves once cited Street Fighter II as some inspiration behind the gameplay.
  • The game has some joke nicknames derived from whatever "meta" or moves were commonly-used in the online or competitive scenes.
    • "Gran Boot Fantasy Versus" - Based on the meme trend revolving around Gran's flying kick attack(s), as you'd see Gran players performing those moves so often.
    • "Gran66Lue Fantasy Versus" - Numpad notations are ubiquitous in the Fighting Game Community. Here, "66L" refers to the dashing light attack introduced as a new universal mechanic in Rising and was abused or spammed online immediately upon release. Players then stylized the game's title via Letters 2 Numbers to reference it.

Specific Gameplay mechanics and modes

  • "Fall Guys Mode" – The "Grand Bruise Legends!" mode of Rising, which features online minigames and aesthetic akin to Fall Guys, but Granblue-themed. Reference, or inspiration otherwise, the similarities are very obvious.

Gran

  • "Ryu" - Emphasizing Gran's Shotoclone status as a fighting game character and his protagonist role in the Granblue franchise. Especially when the developers confirmed that Versus is inspired by Street Fighter, you'll have fans comparing to, or simply calling Gran as the Ryu counterpart of this game.
  • "The Boot", "Timbs" - Derived from the "Gran Boot Fantasy" meme involving Gran's flying kick move. Photo edits of Gran wearing Timberland Boots were also common to the point that he and his flying kick are both nicknamed with that brand.

Charlotta

  • "Box Potato", "Potato" - Since the Harvins are a race of Little People, "potato" is commonly used by English Granblue fans to describe how small they are. The gacha game turned it into an Ascended Meme where an in-game event outright calls Charlotta a "thoroughly-baked potato" in the official English localization. Versus followed when XSEED Games went with the "potato" Fan Nickname for Charlotta when they tweeted her during National Tater Tot Day.
  • "Saber", "Excalibur" - An existing nickname for her since she's basically an Expy of Saber from Fate/stay night if her appearance, default color theme and Limit Break are any indications.
  • "The Demon", "Demon Loli", "Akuma Loli", "Loli Honda" - Coined when fighting game fans found out that Charlotta has a Moveset Clone from Akuma and E. Honda from Street Fighter.
  • "Moonlight Greatsword" - Fans pointing out how her default weapon (Claiomh Solais) resembles the iconic blue weapon from Dark Souls.

Ferry

  • "Armpits", "Pits" - Because official in-game artworks and fanartists tend to focus on her armpits for Fanservice, this nickname easily stuck with Ferry.
  • "Updog" - Ferry's anti-air has her send Beppo to attack at a vertical angle.
  • "Dhalsim" - From comparisons with a Street Fighter character, since Ferry (who has a whip) and Dhalsim (who can extend his limbs) are both classified under the "zoner" fighting game character archetype

Katalina

  • "Silver Chariot" - Fans comparing Ares to a Stand from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, specifically Jean-Pierre Polnareff's Silver Chariot due to visual similarities.

Lowain

  • "Lil Wayne" - Originating from the African-American/Hispanic players, the Fighting Game Community intentionally call Lowain as such because his name sounds similar to the rapper.
  • "Bros.", "Brofamily" - A collective term for the trio, also derived from the gacha game because some story events outright call them as such.
  • "Yggdrasil Main", "Yugu Main" - Also doubles as a meme joking at how Lowain's Super Skybound Art summons Yggdrasil and makes her take his place temporarily.
  • "Scrub Killer", "Knowledge Check" - Yggdrasil has been named as such by the Fighting Game Community because her moves are devastating and can manipulate the stage; newbie fighting game players would likely be taking massive damage (directly or via chip) in just a short amount of time if they haven't practiced how to counter her. She then becomes less effective at high-level plays where she can be anticipated or her moves be spot-dodged, hence a "knowledge check" of mechanics or counter-plays.
  • "Bros Install", "Waifu Install" - Both of Lowain's Supers are "Install" Supers (ones that allow you to enter a Super Mode upon activation), with each of them involving assistance from his bros, and them summoning the female Primal Beast Yggdrasil, respectively.

Metera

  • "Zoner Thot" - A combination of her "zoner" fighting game archetype and her Heroic Seductress trait.

Beelzebub

Narmaya

Soriz

  • "Fundoshi Install", "SOIYA Install", "Undies Install" - Nicknames for Macho Ultimatum, his Super Skybound Art, where he destroys his clothing and fights only in a fundoshi with a Golden Super Mode similar to Bang Shishigami.

Djeeta

  • "Ken" - When Djeeta's teaser was revealed on the 6th Anniversary Livestream of Granblue Fantasy, some of her shown moves are similar to Gran's. Because not much of her entire moveset was known at that time, players easily speculated Djeeta being a Moveset Clone of another Shotoclone, comparing her to Ken from Street Fighter just as how Gran is considered the "Ryu" of this game.
  • "Sakura" - When people realized that her moveset was very similar to Street Fighter Sakura's, notably due to her "Reginleiv: Recidive" being a charged version of the standard fireball projectile.
  • "Deadly Rave" - Her "Eternal Ascendancy" Super Skybound Art, as it's basically this game's reference to Geese Howard's named No-Holds-Barred Beatdown combo from Fatal Fury. Such nickname has existed long ago for any super move in a Fighting Game which requires specific button inputs to unleash the entire attack combo.

Zooey

  • "Chocolate Waifu", "Ramlethal" - Emphasizing her dark-skinned, blond appearance. She's also compared to other dark-skinned fighting game characters, commonly Ramlethal Valentine from Guilty Gear, also by Arc System Works, and because Zooey's setplay-heavy playstyle feels reminiscient of Ramlethal's as well.
  • "Daenerys", "Khaleesi" - From Granblue newcomers whose first impression of Zooey (from her Teaser Trailer) focuses on her being accompanied by dragons, comparing her to the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones.
  • "Zooey Badgirl", "Grand Order Sol" - When it was quickly discovered that Zooey's moveset has many parallels to that of Guilty Gear protagonist Sol Badguy, as well as his past counterpart Holy Order-Sol. "Grand Order Sol" is also half-derived from her other name, Grand Order.
  • "Dustloop" - Her jumping Unique attack is the exact same as Sol's jumping Dust attack, which is notable for being able to loop into itself with good timing and the opponent being at the proper aerial height, quickly becoming one of Sol's signature combos and techniques.

Belial & Avatar Belial

  • "Daddy" - Carrying over from the gacha game, due to Belial being incredibly sexy, and his dialogue consisting entirely of lewd jokes. It also helps that his "Parade's Lust" leitmotif has the line "daddy won't stop your inhibitions", and his unique action is named "Give Daddy Some Sugar".
  • "Terumi" - Belial's moveset takes many cues from the main antagonist of BlazBlue, Yuuki Terumi. He is also a massive troll, just like Terumi.
  • "Akuma" - Belial's design borrows heavily from the Shoto archetype that characters like Gran, Katalina, and Djeeta personify, but with much more versatility and power behind them. Coupled with his placement on the tier lists, he is often billed as the game's equivalent of Akuma.
  • "Devil Jin" - Avatar Belial's moveset borrows heavily from that of the Devil characters from Tekken, with his design and extra moves from his flight stance being very similar to those of Devil Jin.

Cagliostro

  • "Cag" - Shortened version of her name, carried over from the mobile game.

Anre/Uno

  • "Frieza" - Referencing his Japanese voice actor Ryūsei Nakao, also the fact that he is small like Frieza.

Vira

  • "Izayoi" - Referencing her playstyle similarities to Izayoi from BlazBlue, even having the same Japanese voice actress.

Anila

  • "Sheep Geyser", "Buster Sheep", "Buster Wool", "Sheep Terry" - In the gacha game, Anila already had her animation references to Terry Bogard's Power Geyser and Buster Wolf. Ever since her reveal trailer for Rising demonstrated these moves, more fans from the Fighting Game Community noticed the similarities, and mixed Terry Bogard's moves with sheep-based names due to Anila's sheep/ram Animal Motifs. As a result, Anila herself is also being called "Sheep Terry" by the FGC.
  • "Watame" - Even though Anila came first, she has been easily associated with Watame Tsunomaki of hololive due to their similar sheep/ram Animal Motifs, brown horns, blonde hair, and white clothes. What originally started as a meme trend between the Granblue and hololive fandoms eventually turned into calling Anila as the VTuber.

Grimnir

  • "GRRRRRIMMMMMNIIIIIR" - Carrying over from the mobile game, many fans insist his name be written in Caps Lock to reflect his overly-dramatic way of introducing himself.
  • "Wind Boy", "Wind Guy" - In reference to his wind powers.

Lucilius

  • "Faa-san", "Cilius" - Carried over from the mobile game, used by Belial.
  • "Antichrist Kick", "Satan Kick" - Lucilius's 5M, which is the exact same move as Ragna the Bloodedge's infamous 5B, known colloquially as he Jesus Kick.

2B

  • "2Booty - A popular nickname for her already from her home series which became an Ascended Meme thanks to Lowain's system voice announcing it as her name when chosen at the select screen.
