Big Falcon Island

     Big Falcon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/big_falcon_from_voltes_v_2.png
Click here to see Big Falcon's docked form
The base of the heroes, designed by Kentaro Go himself. It is home to the team, Professor Hamaguchi, Professor Sakonji and various personnel that aid the team and the titular robot itself ranging from doctors to technicians. It is situated on Big Falcon Island, a remote island that, as the name implies, is shaped like a falcon.

  • Cool Spaceship: Episode 38 reveals that Big Falcon is secretly a spaceship, and that Kentaro designed it to dock with Solar Bird.
  • Dub Name Change: In the Philippine-English dub, for whatever reason, the name of Big Falcon was changed to Camp Big Falcon.
  • Hero Academy: Prior to the start of the series, Big Falcon trained the Voltes team to become skilled Ace Pilots for Voltes V.
  • Home Base: Big Falcon houses the Voltes Team's Volt Machines, their training grounds, their own personal quarters and rooms and is also secretly a spaceship.
  • Island Base: Big Falcon is situated on a bird-shaped island.
  • Mission Control: Big Falcon is made up of personnel that alert the Voltes Team of updates about their mecha during battle, provide intel about enemy Beast Fighters, and guide them during battle. They also locate their machines when they're missing and provide repairs. Other Big Falcon workers include doctors and nurses, welders, and soldiers with rifles.
  • The Professor: Kentaro, Mitsuyo, Hamaguchi and Sakonji. Kentaro is more than a scientist, while he went by "Gohl", he was elected Boazania's Minister of Science and Technology.
  • Red Shirt Army: Unfortunately, shooting is not the area of expertise of Big Falcon's workers. Episode 34 awesomely subverts with Nakamura and his Suspiciously Small Army, though.

The Voltes Team

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/voltesteam.png
The Voltes Team
  • Badass Crew: Each member of the Voltes Team excels in a specific niche: Kenichi has won multiple shooting competitions, Hiyoshi is a skilled inventor, Daijiro knows several martial arts, Ippei is a famous rodeo star and Megumi is a skilled ninja who practices Koga-ryu.
  • Badass Family: Kentaro is a genius scientist and leader of a slave rebellion in another planet , Mitsuyo is a technicians expert and ace jet pilot, Kenichi is skilled at shooting and bikeriding, Hiyoshi can wield a knife and take on sharks and Daijirou was trained in several martial arts while during his stay in a different country. Oh, and the Boazanian Beast Fighter-commanding Master Swordsman Evil Prince who wants to conquer the Earth? He's actually Kentaro's long-lost son from his first marriage with Lozaria.
    • General Oka is a practitioner of the Kōga-ryū ninja style, but currently works as in the Earth Defense Force to help stave off the Alien Invasion. His daughter, Megumi, is a Ninja Yamato Nadeshiko set to inherit the aforementioned art, and is also the pilot of one the vehicles that form Voltes V. She's also a case of Badass Adorable and Cool Big Sis to Hiyoshi.
    • Ippei Mine is a Japanese-American Cowboynote  who uses whips and pistols. He forms the "arms" part of Voltes V and is The Lancer to Kenichi's Leader. Being badass runs in his blood - when he was a young boy, one night, his homeless family were surrounded by wild wolves and about to be mauled. Luckily, Ippei's mother had a gun and used the gunpowder to cause an explosion to kill them, saving her son and husband, at the cost of her own life.
  • Blue Blood: Since Kentaro is a Boazanian Prince, Mitsuyo is technically Boazanian royalty, and Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi are of royal blood. The boys never comment on the "royal" bit, but they pride themselves in being Boazanian as they do in being human.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Kenichi wears red, Ippei wears blue, and Megumi wears yellow with pink accents. The other two members of the Voltes Team wear green.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Mitsuyo, Kentaronote  Ippei's parents, Commander Oka...by the end of the series, the only parents of the Voltes Team that remain alive are Kentaro and Megumi's mother, though the latter is never seen and only mentioned.
  • Defends Against Their Own Kind: Unknowingly. The Go brothers are half-Boazanian, but don't know this until episode 28.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: Averted. In the series finale, after Voltes V invades Boazania, ends the Fantastic Caste System and allows for Gohl to re-take the throne, Kenichi, Ippei, Megumi, Daijiro and Hiyoshi vow to stay as Voltes V pilots and to always protect the Earth together no matter what.
  • Five-Man Band: Kenichi is The Leader, Hiyoshi is The Smart Guy, Daijirou is The Big Guy, Ippei is The Lancer, Megumi is The Heart.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The Go brothers are half-Boazanian (from father) and half-human (from mother). Kenichi never lets that get in the way of doing what's right, as do Daijirou and Hiyoshi.
  • Human Alien Discovery: In episode 28, Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi are shocked to learn that their father used to be Boazanian noble Prince Gohl until he was Made a Slave, which means they're half-Boazanian. Kenichi is shocked at first, but doesn't let this bring his morale down.
  • Nom de Mom: Kentaro took Mitsuyo's name upon marriage, though after he re-takes the Boazanian throne, he sheds his alias and goes by Gohl again. Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi go by her surname instead of his as well.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: When Ippei announces he is leaving, Kenichi and Megumi try to bring him back and reason with him.
  • Punny Name: Gō means "strong", "powerful", or "sturdy". Every member of the Gō family is strong and powerful in a different field, and at least two of them are martial artists.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is the Go brothers last name Go, Gō, Gou or Goh?note
  • Training from Hell:
    • The Spin Fly Formation. It involved surviving centrifugal forces that tortured the Voltes Team.
    • The beginning had the Voltes Team undergo this in their preparation of piloting Voltes V and the Boazan Army arrive, for one whole year. Worth noting that Hiyoshi, the smart kid of the team, is sent to fight off a living shark with nothing but a knife.
  • True Companions: Outside of piloting Voltes V, they five often hang out together and enjoy each other's company. In the series finale, they strive to protect the Earth together.

    Kenichi Gō

Kenichi Gō (剛健一 , Gō Kenichi)

Voiced by: Yukinaga Shiraishi (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Gou-Kenichi_9967.jpg

The team leader of Voltes Team and piloting the Volt Cruiser, forming the robot's head, and while he is the oldest son of Profesor Mitsuyo Gō, he is actually the second oldest son of Professor Kentaro Go/Prince Gohl. As a child, Kenichi used to be an adventurous child, but after the departure of his father, he changed his attitude into that of a responsible big brother for his younger brothers. He grows up into a Motocross champion while being an excellent marksman, but heeding his father's last words, he knows his destiny is to lead his brothers and teammates to protect Earth from the invasion of Boazanians.

  • The Ace: Good at shooting, riding motorcycles, riding mecha...
  • All-Loving Hero: Kenichi expresses kindness and empathy to both humans and Boazanians after learning that he is half-Boazanian, as are Hiyoshi and Daijiro. He doesn't let Nakamura's Fantastic Racism faze him and also shows kindness to him, which touches his heart and leads him to save Kenichi from a potentially fatal shot. This is, of course, after his Character Development.
  • All There in the Manual: According to Tadao Nagahama: Robot Romance Animation Chronicle Infobook, Kenichi's good with computers.
  • Aloof Big Brother: In a way. Since he's promoted as Team Dad, Kenichi can be rather uptight and aloof in treating and disciplining his family members, trying to put an emphasis that they have to set aside personal feelings for the sake of defending Earth from Boazan invasion, though sometimes he knows when to relax and joke around.
  • Berserker Tears: After watching his own mother give her life to save the Voltes Team, he relentlessly attacks the Beast Fighter through tears.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands: Shoots Kentaro's gun from him after he tries to shoot Hiyoshi.
  • Bring It: In episode 4, despite being outright battered from Daijirou's training, he insists on Daijirou shooting him so he can learn the butterfly technique...and he does!
  • Celibate Hero: Kenichi has no love interest, unlike the other protagonists of the Robot Romance Trilogy.note
  • Character Development: In the earlier episodes, Kenichi was rather trigger-happy. In episode 6, when Ippei left Big Falcon on Eiffel, Kenichi chased after him with a gun. In episode 7, he gets frustrated at Hiyoshi being stuck underwater and blames Tako, before taking out his gun again and threatening to shoot the poor robot. As Hiyoshi begs him not to, Kenichi suggets Hiyoshi shoot Tako himself. However, in later episodes, Kenichi adopted a policy of Thou Shall Not Kill (unless it is in self-defense) and his empathy warms many of his adversaries, including Giligan and Jangal. This was in part because he learned about his father's Dark and Troubled Past and how it affected his drive for peace, as well as the importance of friendship and understanding others after his Hot-Blooded attitude caused rifts between his teammates. Kenichi wasn't born an All-Loving Hero, and he had to go through a lot to get where he is today (no doubt his mother dying and his father being missing affected his initial, aggressive attitude - Parental Abandonment is a bitch), but by the end of the series, he's a more humbled man.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Kenichi's drive for heroism is so intense that him and his teammates have to be physically restrained by being bound to their beds for their own safety. In response to this, Kenichi declares it is better to die in battle than to die restrained.
Cold Sniper: He initially takes a page out of the book of the previous Cold Sniper, Juzo from Combattler V before his Character Development happens. He changes into Friendly Sniper after his Character Development happens.
  • Dub Personality Change: The Philippine-English dub changed his lines in episode 28 to make him more vengeful after learning the truth about his father.
Original Japanese: "I never knew it before, but after listening to father's path of life, I realize there's Boazanian blood flowing in our veins!"
Philippine-English: "General Watson, your sacrifice will not be in vain! Thank you. Father has severe and tragic past, we will avenge your death".
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The American-English, Philippine-English, Brazilian Portuguese and Catalan dubs change his name to Steve Armstrong.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Michel Go.
    • In the Greek dub, Kenichi was known as Michelle.
    • In the Cuban Spanish dub, his name was changed to Esteban.
    • In the Korean dub, his name was changed to Geon-il Oh.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Dub-specific example. The Greek dub renamed Kenichi to Michell, a name more common amongst women.
  • Going to Give It More Energy: When Heinel pilots Galgo and comes close to his Near-Villain Victory by draining the robot of its energy, Hamaguchi browses through it's blueprints (provided by the traitors in Heinel's castle), and orders the Voltes team to do this trope. Kenichi does so, and Galgo is no longer able to function. As Heinel tries to regain his control, he accidentally bites the saucer of the very traitor that sold him out, and he dies when it explodes.
  • Good Is Dumb: In Episode 30, Kenichi is sent a letter stating that if he wants to see his father, he must meet the sender, "Jane", at the church in the next morning alone. Instead of sending it to Professor Sakonji for verification, or keeping in mind the numerous times the Boazanians tried to pull similar tricks on him, Kenichi doesn't question it and meets the sender at the church the next morning, as instructed. The church turns out to be secretly full of explosives and traps, but he manages to escape them, all while rescuing "Jane". And the cherry on top is that "Jane" is obviously Katherine wearing a white sheet over her signature long horns, but it takes the explosion of the bomb blowing the sheet off for him to realize this.
  • The Heart: In the initial episodes, Kenichi was obsessive with the mission, portraying a dedication more intense than Megumi's towards defeating the Boazanians. However, under the guidance of Hamaguchi, witnessing the horrors of war and empathizing with Ippei, learning about his father and spending time with his friends, he underwent a change of heart and began realizing that kindness and love goes a long way - after all, it was his father's love for the Earth that resulted in Voltes V's creation. As a result, in future episodes, he would change from a once-hotheaded young lad to a sweet, kindhearted boy.
  • Hot-Blooded: And how. A good example is the scene where he and his brothers finally learn about their father's Dark and Troubled Past: Kenichi swears loudly to defeat the enemy, while shedding plenty of Manly Tears.
  • Hot Blooded Sideburns: Since this is a '70s anime, and Kenichi is The Leader and not The Protagonist, as he's the younger half-brother of The Protagonist, (well one of them anyways). He sports the most prominent ones out of all the characters of the Robot Romance Trilogy.
  • If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: Kenichi is very adamant on a no-killing policy on living beings, especially one that is driven by Revenge, because he doesn't want his team to look as bad as the (mostly) evil invaders and it will set a good example of the good guys. For the majority of the part, the rest of the Voltes Team understands him.
  • The Leader: He is The Leader of the Voltes Team.
  • Leader Forms the Head: Kenichi's vehicle is the Volt Cruiser, which forms the head part of Voltes V. In the transformation sequence, Kenichi has his own scene where he is shifted to the top before Voltes V strikes an Ass Kicking Pose.
  • Nice Guy: In spite of what he's been through, Kenichi holds no hatred in his heart for anyone, not even the Boazanians, and is genuinely a pleasant and empathetic person.
  • No Indoor Voice: Kenichi can be quite the bellower when he's passionate. This is especially prominent whenever he's around Heinel.
  • Promotion to Parent and Team Dad: Ever since Professor Gō disappeared, he's done his best to be the "man" of the house.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Kenichi is the calm and collected Blue Oni to his teammate, Ippei's brash and quick-tempered Red Oni. He is also the Blue Oni to his older half-brother, The Protagonist Prince Heinel's Red Oni as well due to the latter being far more Hot-Blooded than he is.
  • The Rival: He is one of many rivals to The Protagonist Prince Heinel. He also has one of his own in The Lancer, Ippei.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: He also takes a page out of the book of The Dragon Garuda from Combattler V with the revelation in episode 28 of Voltes V that he and his younger brothers, Daijiro and Hiyoshi, are half-Boazanians.

    Ippei Mine

Ippei Mine (峰一平 , Mine Ippei)

Voiced by: Kazuyuki Sogabe (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Mine-Ippei_5909.jpg

The second-in-command of the Voltes Team, piloting the Arms section of the robot, the Volt Bomber. A Japanese orphan that grew up alone in America due to his mother dying to protect him from a pack of wolves, and then his father shortly followed. Even so, Ippei managed to make a career of a rodeo champion thanks to the companionship of his beloved horse Eiffel. Until one day he's suddenly plucked out from his life as a rodeo champion by the Big Falcon to serve as one of the defenders of humanity by being a part of the Voltes Team. Ippei is a bit bitter and cynical at this sudden change of life, causing him to bicker a lot with the team leader Kenichi, but nonetheless he still gives his all to defend humanity and grows to respect his new friends.

  • All There in the Manual: According to the Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection, Hamaguchi is Ippei's maternal grandfather.
  • Agent Scully: Ippei is skeptical of anything the Boazanians claim, such as their attempt to lure out the Go brothers by claiming they have Kentaro and Zuhl's insistence that he's a reformed man. Most of the time, he turns out to be right.
  • Amazon Chaser: A variant. Ippei remarks in episode 32 that he admires Megumi because even though she's been through a lot, he's never seen her cry. When he follows her on Eiffel and finds out that Megumi really was crying, he instantly feels protective of her and swears to make the Boazanians pay.
Megumi: They picked younote  off, one by one...why father, why?
Ippei, silently: Bear it, Megumi. We'll get back at them for this. We'll avenge your father, I swear!
  • Americans Are Cowboys: Ippei is Japanese-American (he's from California to be precise), and is a skilled rodeo champion, winning many awards.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Subverted, as ippei is actually younger than Kenichi. While he isn't Kenichi's Big Little Brother in the same way that Daijiro is, after the two become friends, Ippei becomes protective of him and views him as a Little Big Brother. He flies into a rage when Nakamura claims that Kenichi is a traitor because of his Boazanian blood and punches him, shocking Kenichi.
  • A Boy and His X: A boy and his horse, Eiffel. They're famed in America as a duo since Ippei was a rodeo star.
  • Character Development: Being an Ineffectual Loner means that at first, he tends to insult the others for being too sentimental towards their parents when his were already dead. By the tail end of the series, after much interacting with the team (and getting a fistful on the face by Kenichi quite a bit), he happily defends the team for their beloved departed parents.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Ippei will often hit on Megumi without any hint of shame.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Episodes 3 goes into detail about his family life, and episode 6 has him and Kenichi squash their beef for good.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Ippei's Establishing Character Moment is of him critisizing Hamaguchi and asking why he's forcing them to train relentessly, and when Zuhl comes to them for aid, begging them to get rid of Prince Heinel, he dismisses Zuhl's stories of Heinel's brutality by mocking him.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The Philippine-English and American-English dubs change his name to Mark Gordon.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Gepi Mine.
    • In the Greek dub, his name was changed to Geppy.
    • In the Cuban Spanish dub, his name was changed to Mark.
    • In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, his name was changed to Marky.
    • In the Korean dub, his name was changed to Tae-soo Jeong.
  • Foil: To Prince Heinel. Both are rivals to Kenichi, both initially despised their parents until the truth was revealed, and both are skilled equestrians.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: At first. Ippei had no intention of ever being a Voltes pilot and simply wanted to live a simple life away from Big Falcon. He was often cold to his co-pilots and never made an effort to connect with them, except Megumi, who he had an obvious crush on. It's only after overcoming his own past that he jhas a Jerkass Realization and works to mend his ways.
  • The Gadfly: In the earlier episodes, Ippei took his duties less seriously than the rest and would be called out by Kenichi, to which he would pull the "Just Joking" Justification. Though he grew more respectful post-Character Development, when an opportunity arises he can't help himself, such as bringing a crab to Megumi because he knows she's scared of them, or having Eiffel nudge her to get her to admit the identity of the "boy" she was seeing.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Another way he's a Foil to Heinel. Ippei is quick to turn violent when enraged, calling Zuhl a "bastard" and attempting to beat him with his own staff once it's found out that be brought a bomb to Big Falcon, and also punching Nakamura for his Fantastic Racism against the Go brother's half-Boazanian heritage.
  • Handsome Lech: Out of all the main four boys, Ippei is the only Long-Haired Pretty Boy. He's also the only one who repeatedly makes advances on Megumi. However, they never end up canonically, in stark contrast to the previous series, where Hyouma and Chizuru were a Battle Couple.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Downplayed. Ippei flirted with Megumi but it never went sexual. At worst he slapped his shirtless chest while he was training with his whip and joked that she was "welcome to watch".
  • Ineffectual Loner: Ippei has dead parents, not to mention that he's the only unrelated guy in the Voltes team (Kenichi has his younger brothers, Megumi is the daughter of their Big Good), not to mention he's literally plucked out of his rodeo life to serve at Big Falcon. A constant theme in his Character Development is him learning how to deal with his issues.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's a sour little Gadfly on the outside but beneath that shell is a Byronic Hero-turned-true companion who looks out for the Voltes team.
  • Knows the Ropes: He occasionally carries his whip from his rodeo times and sometimes uses it for things outside riding.
  • The Lancer: One of the archetypical examples of the trope, Ippei is the second-in-command of the team and engages in a lot of arguments with Kenichi, which tends to end in both punching out each other to sort their problems (it's even in the opening).
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Ippei's hair goes past his neck, and he seems to think he's quite the casanova, as evidenced by any interaction between him and Megumi when they're alone.
  • Morality Pet:
    • A literal example in the form of Eiffel. He initially abandons the team, but realizes that Eiffel won't be safe if he doesn't fight the Boazanians. Ippei's choice to stay in the team is further cemented as he grows genuine friendships with them.
    • Megumi as well. She's the only one who he isn't openly abrasive to in the earliest episodesnote  and their friendship is what helps heal the divide between him and Kenichi. He's not above teasing her, but he genuinely loves her. If you've ever made her cry, well, count your days.
  • Parental Neglect: Ippei believes that his mother abandoned him when he was young, not knowing that she actually died. When Hamaguchi tells him the truth, he has a BSoD before breaking into tears.
  • Press-Ganged: This happens to Ippei when Professor Hamaguchi ordered the soldiers of Camp Big Falcon to seize him in the middle of his public rodeo champion tour, forcibly separating Ippei from his horse Eiffel and making the young man to become a member of Voltes Team and the pilot of Volt Bomber. Hamaguchi eventually had Ippei's horse transferred to Camp Big Falcon, though it almost ended in tragedy when a Beast Fighter attack put Eiffel at risk.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The quick-tempered Red to his team leader's more even-tempered Blue. Ironically enough, they both wear opposite colored spacesuits.
  • The Rival: The sole rival of The Leader Kenichi.
  • Ship Tease: Occasionally has quite the interaction with Megumi, being the only two members of the Voltes Team that are not blood-related with the Go family.
    • In the first episode, while he's rude to everyone else, he's nice to Megumi and tries to get her to agree with him about questioning Mitsuyo.
    • In episode 3, he tells Megumi she's welcome to see him shirtless.
    • In episode 32, Ippei catches Megumi picking flowers and asks if they're for a boy. Megumi hides who they really are for, but Ippei is curious, and unbeknownst to her, he follows her on Eiffel to see who she gives them to. When Megumi places them on her deceased father's grave and starts crying, Ippei is saddened and feels protective of her, vowing to get revenge on the Boazanians for killing General Oka. Seeing Megumi upset motivates him to try and kill Jangal as revenge, but this puts him at odds with Kenichi, and the two have a fight. However Ippei later realizes that he was letting his vengeance blind him.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Taken to the extreme after Mitsuyo dies, when he snarks at Kenichi for "missing his mommy" - mind you, Kenichi witnessed her die. His belligerent attitude results in the Kenichi fistfighting him until Megumi breaks up the fight and informs the team of Ippei's own backstory, which causes him to run away, ashamed. However, as the series progresses, Ippei becomes more respectful while retaining his snark.
  • Weapons of Their Trade: Ippei, being an ex-cowboy, has a whip.
  • You Killed My Father: Not his father, but Megumi's. Seeing his love interest cry fills him with rage and when Jangal is in his clutches, he attempts to kill him as revenge, in spite of Kenichi's protests.

    Daijirou Gō

Daijirou Gō (剛大次郎 , Gō Daijirō)

Voiced by: Tesshō Genda (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Gou-Daijiro_1282.bmp

Defense tactician of the Voltes Team, piloting the Volt Panzer that forms the robot's body chest. Despite his big stature, Daijirou is actually the second son of Professor Mitsuyo Gō and the third son of Professor Kentaro Go/Prince Gohl. Formerly a playful boy, the disappearance of his father changed him, and afterwards, he was sent to a country to learn many forms of martial arts. When he returned, he's already mastered many fighting styles with his favorite weapon being the naginata. Like his brothers, he further trained himself to eventually engage in the battle for humanity against the Boazanians.

  • Acrofatic: Daijirou may be on the tubby side, but he knows several martial arts.
  • The Big Guy: He's a Big Little Brother, the close combat expert, and his machine forms the biggest bulk of Voltes' body.
  • Big Little Brother: By looks alone, you'd swear he's the eldest brother, or at least older than Kenichi.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English and American-English dubs, his name was changed to "Big Bert" Robert Armstrong.
    • In the Italian and Greek dubs, his name was changed to Ivan.
    • In the Cuban Spanish dub, his name was changed to Bert.
    • In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, his name was changed to Bert Armstrong.
    • In the Catalan dub, his name was changed to Albert Armstrong.
    • In the Korean dub, his name was changed to Gun-woong Oh.
  • Genius Bruiser: A pretty good martial artist and a decent strategist.
  • Gentle Giant: Daijirou has a soft spot for animals, and takes a liking to a stray puppy.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: At one point, he adopts a stray Japanese spitz puppy. The puppy repays his kindness by helping the Voltes Team in batle.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Daijiro or Daijirou?
  • Martial Arts Staff: While naginata was his favorite weapon, if he has to pick up a nearby weapon, he'd pick a long stick-like figure to show that he's very good in bojutsu as well.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad??: Out of all the Gō brothers, Daijirou is the most desperate to see his father again, abandoning a mission to rescue him from Zuhl's forces. When this fails and he's forced to abandon his father again, Daijiro sheds Berserker Tears and lashes out at Kenichi.

    Hiyoshi Gō

Voiced by: Noriko Ohara (Japanese) Other Languages

Hiyoshi Gō (剛光代 , Gō Hiyoshi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Gou-Hiyoshi_3218.bmp

The young genius and mechanic of the Voltes Team, piloting Volt Frigate which formed the legs of Voltes V. The youngest of the Gō brothers. For his brothers, he'd always be the child who never felt the warmth and love of a real father. Despite his hurdles, however, he's gifted with a brilliant mind, keen eyes for gadgetries, which landed him the role of a technical handyman and repairman when he's not piloting. He still knows his role for humanity and prepares his body and mind for the day to fight the Boazanians.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: When Hiyoshi shows his invention to Kenichi, Kenichi isn't interested and tells him he should be focusing on fighting battles rather than inventing things. Kenichi also reacted similarly to Hiyoshi wanting to attend a boat racing competition. Megumi calls out Kenichi for being callous to his feelings. Even though she's not related to him by blood, in future episodes Hiyoshi would refer to Megumi as "Megumi-neesan".
  • Badass Bookworm: Incredibly bright and good enough to join his brothers and friends in piloting Voltes V. Also his 'training' in Episode 1 for a 'bookworm'? Fighting a Threatening Shark with a knife...
  • Break the Cutie: Hiyoshi is heavily upset to be on the receiving end of Nakamura's racism in episode 34 and asks his big brothers why he hates them.
  • Child Prodigy: He is the youngest of the Voltes Team and a skilled Gadgeteer Genius. He repairs his Volt Frigate when it's damaged from a Beast Fighter's attack, and is also the inventor of Tako. He likely inherited his smarts from Mitsuyo and Kentaro.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The Philippine-English and American-English dubs change his name to "Little" John Armstrong.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Carl.
    • In the Greek dub, his name was changed to Carlo.
    • In the Cuban Spanish dub, his name was changed to Juanito.
    • In the Catalan dub, his name was changed to Johnny Armstrong.
    • In the Korean dub, his name was changed to Geon-sang Oh.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: He's the youngest of the team and wants to be taken seriously by his older peers, but is often dismissed. In other cases, when he wants to have fun like a normal kid, he is admonished by Kenichi. This trait is also shared with his older half-brother, Prince Heinel, despite the latter being an adult and not a kid.
  • Kid Hero: Hiyoshi is canonically 10.note
  • Hidden Depths: Apart from tinkering, Hiyoshi has an interest in ships and the ocean. He built his own miniature ship named Mikasa.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Sort of. Hiyoshi is the youngest member of the Voltes Team, so of course he'd be the shortest.
  • The Smart Guy: Like his parents, Hiyoshi is a robotic scientist.
  • Teen Genius: As said above, his speciality is building robots and anything mechanic while being in his preteens. This results the creation of the team's Robot Buddy, Tako.
  • Youthful Freckles: He has a freckled face, is the youngest of the group and seems to be seen as the most innocent of the Voltes Team.

    Megumi Oka

Megumi Oka (岡めぐみ , Ōka Megumi)

Voiced by: Miyuki Ueda (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Megumi-Oka_9776.jpg

Heir to the Koga-Ryu ninja style and daughter of General Oka of the Earth Defense Force, as well as the pilot of Volt Lander, forming the feet of Voltes V. Megumi has trained in the arts of ninjutsu since childhood and set to inherit her ninjutsu dojo. She's also learned gentleness from her mother, which tends to translate to trying to mediate for the team, especially when Kenichi is being too hard-ass for his own good and either overly scolds Hiyoshi or gets into an argument with Ippei. Since her father is a commander of the Earth Defense Force and co-designed Voltes V itself, Megumi is also trained to take her place amongst the Voltes Team and to fight against the Boazanians and protect mankind.

  • Action Girl: Being an Heir to the Dojo and the daughter of a military man has its benefits, and this makes her the go-to person to go on foot solo and then kick ass before going back to her pilot.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Hiyoshi calls her "Megumi-neesan", befitting to her Team Mom status. note
  • All There in the Manual: According to Super Robot Wars 30, Megumi is an expert intelligence gatherer and master infiltrator.
  • Badass Adorable: Megumi can singlehandedly bring multiple mooks to the ground through Koga-Ryu, and does it so with a pretty smile and cute bow.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Megumi is beautiful (expect many young boys who grew up with the show to recall her as one of their first cartoon crushes) and she knows it, joking to Ippei that "she's at the right age". She also has a pure heart and despite her serious exterior and spares no effort to beat back the Boazanian's forces.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Her hair is blue and she's a pacifistic kunoichi that fights Beast Knights to protect the Earth.
  • Break the Cutie: Megumi at the start of the series is a cheerful girl who's ready to kick Boazanian ass, but when all her mentor figures die, she's devastated, and when her father dies, she's unable to hold in her grief in any longer and breaks down crying. Notably, when she meets Kentaro, she sheds tears of joy.
  • Broken Tears:
    • Watching Daiand destroy the jet her father pilots after he gave her its only jetpack leaves her in tears.
    • In the Grand Finale, Megumi cries when the Voltes team finally reunite with Kentaro.
  • Butt-Monkey: Situational example. In episode 9, her desperation to impress her dad results in the rest of the Voltes team making fun of her. In future episodes, they would become more uplifting to her.
  • Dub Personality Change: The Philippine-English dub made Megumi swear for vengeance after Daiand killed her father.
Original Japanese: "Father, please watch me, I will surely beat that armored beast fighter Daiand with my own hands!"
Philippine-English: "Father, I vow to avenge your death, I'll destroy that robot!"
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English, American-English and Catalan dubs, her name was changed to Jamie Robinson.
    • In the Italian dub, her name was changed to Sonya Okanin.
    • In the Greek dub, her name was changed to Sonia.
    • In the Cuban Spanish dub, her name was changed to Yami.
    • In the Korean dub, her name was changed to Kyung-ran Baek.
  • Gratuitous Ninja: She practices the Koga-Ryu Ninja style that's been in her family for generations.
  • The Heart: Both Megumi and Kenichi are this, as they encourage others to be the best versions of themselves and always try to show kindness to both friend and foe. After all, We ALL Are Struggling Together.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Though her eyes are usually depicted as brown, the Grand Finale depicts them as blue in a close-up.
  • Ms. Fanservice: There are a handful of scenes where Megumi's skirt unintentionally sways so that her panties are visible. She's oblivious to it.note
  • The Not-Love Interest: Unlike her predecessor Chizuru and successor Erika, Megumi in the end doesn't end up with anyone, not even Kenichi. Though there's some implied stuff between her and Ippei.
  • The Pollyanna: Megumi, though initially appearing to be the serious one amongst the hotheaded Kenichi and Ippei, reveals herself to be this after she befriends her teammates. She is encouraging to them when they need it, and her ability to introspect very well is why they trust her so much. When she breaks into tears after her father dies, it's a shocking Out of Character moment.
  • Ship Tease: She does get several teases with Ippei because she's not part of the Gō bloodline, but then again, she's The Not-Love Interest.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: While the "silk" part is less apparent, on top of being a Ninja, Megumi was taught to be a Yamato Nadeshiko by her mother.
  • Stepford Smiler: Megumi tries to hide her grief from Ippei, by claiming the flowers she was picking for the grave of her father, as well as the graves of Mitsuyo and Hamaguchi, were actually for a boy "since she's of age". Ippei secretly thinks to himself that Megumi is rather admirable for not crying once during the war. Once Ippei finds out this isn't the case and she secretly was crying over their loss, he feels greatly saddened, and then angered, on her behalf.
  • Team Mom: Among the few able to tell Kenichi and Ippei to quit fighting.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Megumi's Tomboyish Ponytail is tied up with a pink bow.
  • Third-Party Peacekeeper: Megumi being the mediator between Kenichi and Ippei makes sense because the other members of the team are Kenichi's younger brothers - meaning there's a bias in the former's favour. Megumi is a neutral party between the Go brothers and Ippei, having the trust of both and not favouring either, so of course she'd be the one to settle their quarrels.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Played With. She's an Action Girl that ties her hair in a ponytail, but she's also a bonafide Yamato Nadeshiko... but insinuating that she should do some ridiculously girly stuffs like 'playing with dolls' pisses her off.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Downplayed. As the heir of Koga-Ryu ninja style, she wants to make her father proud and worthy to succeed the house in case of retirement. Her father was strict but overall still loving and approving but to Megumi's sadness, she never did beat, surpass and make him proud the way she intended (he is proud of her on his own) when he actually died.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Downplayed. Crabs terrify her, but only when it's a small, actual crab. If it's a Giant Enemy Crab like one of the Beast Fighter of the week, she has no problems.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She had the looks, the calm and gentle but not weak behavior, and the ability to wear kimonos and serve tea in the traditional Japanese manner.

Voltes V

Volt Machines

    As a whole
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volt_machines.png
  • Ace Custom: Inverted, as each member of the Voltes Team had to specifically train to learn how to use it.
  • Awesome Personnel Carrier: Though they have ground forms, they're also capable of flight and are used as casual means of transport by the Voltes Team.
  • Escape Pod: Averted. Kentaro averted creating these in the Volt Machines, because he didn't want them to abandon their mission mid-battle.
  • Falling into the Cockpit: Played straight and quickly subverted. When the Voltes team was roughly shoved into their vehicles, Kenichi protested they didn't know how to drive them. Then his mother reminded him flatly they HAD got training to pilot aircrafts.
  • Hammerspace: It's never shown where (or how) they store their projectiles.
  • The Joy of First Flight: Thanks to The Worf Effect, defeating the Boazanian's first Beast Knight proved to be quite easy for the Voltes Team. Even though they were shocked at first, they were quite happy with the results. Unfortunately, the next offenses would be a case of a difficulty spike.
  • Space Fighter: Volt Machines can fly, shoot projectiles, blast lasers and are designed for combat.

    Volt Cruiser
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/voltcruiser.png

The Volt Machine of Kenichi Go. It forms the head of Voltes V.

  • Cool Plane: It's a plane that shoots projectiles and slices things in half.
  • Dub Name Change: Volt Crewzer in the Philippine-English dub.
  • Red Is Heroic: The Volt Cruiser is a primarily red airplane with white wings.
  • Super-Persistent Missile: The Crew Missiles are two missiles that target the opponent and try to crash into them.
  • Vertical Mecha Fins: At the tip of the plane's nose, are three yellow fins.

    Volt Bomber
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/voltbomber.png

The Volt Machine of Ippei Mine. It forms the arms of Voltes V.

    Volt Panzer
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/voltpanzer.png

The Volt Machine of Daijiro Go. It forms the chest of Voltes V.

  • Blue Is Heroic: It is primarily dark blue in colour.
  • Flechette Storm: The Volt Panzer's Belt Cutters spams metallic, flat, multi-spiked projectiles at the enemy.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol: The Panzer Knuckles allow it to launch a grappling hook.
  • Hover Tank: Like the rest of the Volt Machines, the Volt Panzer can fly.

    Volt Frigate
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volt_frigate.png

The Volt Machine of Hiyoshi Go. It forms the legs of Voltes V.

    Volt Lander
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/voltlander.png

The Volt Machine of Megumi Oka. It forms the feet of Voltes V.

  • Abnormal Ammo: It shoots concrete.
  • Detachment Combat: To form the feet of Voltes V, the Volt Lander must split into half.
  • Drill Tank: One of it's attacks. When the Voltes Team is trapped in Heinel's base, this is how Megumi sets it free.
  • Fuuma Shuriken: Like the kunoichi that pilots it, the Volt Lander can shoot shurikens, except it's are large and used as projectiles.

Voltes V

     Voltes V
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/voltes_v_robot.png
Voltes V
"Your father loved the earth, and everything about it. That's why he created Voltes V, to protect it."
Professor Hamaguchi

The titular robot of the series who is created as Earth's last line of defense against the Boazanian invasion and piloted by the Voltes Team.

  • Arm Cannon: Voltes V can turn its arm into one, dubbed "Voltes Bazooka".
  • Battle Tops: SUPER ELECTROMAGNETIC TOPS! This move has Voltes V open it's chest and use the Utility Belt to cut open the Beast Knight.
  • BFG: VOLTES BAZOOKA! As the name implies, this move has the robot's arm change into a gun, and blast at the Beast Knight.
  • BFS: TEN-KUU KEN!! Voltes V summons it's sword and slices the opponent in two, often with a "V" mark.
  • Calling Your Attacks: The Voltes Team often call out their attacks, whether they're in their individual vehicles or in the titular Combining Mecha.
  • Chest Blaster: ULTRA ELECTROMAGNETIC BEAM! This move has Voltes V emit a kinetic attack out of hammerspace at the unfortunate target.
  • Combining Mecha:
    • It's head is formed by the Volt Cruiser.
    • Its arms are formed by the Volt Bomber.
    • Its chest is formed by the Volt Panzer.
    • Its legs are formed by the Volt Frigate.
    • Its feet are formed by the Volt Lander.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The Philippine-English dub changed the names of some of its attacks.
      Original Japanese: "GATLING MISSILES!"'
      Philippine-English: "FINGER MISSILES!"
      Original Japanese: "TEN-KUU KEN!"
      Philippine-English: "LASER SWORD!"
    • The Italian dub changed the name of its BFS:
      Original Japanese: "TEN-KUU KEN!"
      Italian: "EXCALIBUR!"
  • Flying Brick: Emphasized in the Grand Finale when Voltes V knocks over several buildings and devastates onlookers.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol: One of it's weapons emits a grappling hook out of it's arm. It starts the fight against Galgo by punching it this way.
  • Gratuitous English: While it is a Japanese creation, the phrases needed to activate it are in English. Some of the attacks said to activate it are also in English.
  • Hammerspace: Finger Gatling Missiles, Voltes Bazooka and Chain Knuckles are too big to have all been stored in Voltes V's arms.
  • Hover Mecha: It has rockets on it's feet because it's connected by Megumi's Volt Lander.
  • Humongous Mecha: It is made out of five flying multipurpose vehicles, after all.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Only because the Choudenji Tops and the Choudenji Strings that launch them don't quite fit under Killer Yo-Yo.
  • Kill It with Fire: Grand Fire is a flame thrower hidden behind Voltes V's "belt buckle". It emits what look like missiles made of fire, and create enough pressure to move Beast Knights.
  • Kinetic Weapons Are Just Better: Donwplayed, as only a few of Voltes V's weapons are kinetic in nature, including the lightning ball and the super electromagnetic beam.
  • Lightning Can Do Anything: It charges up the "Tenkuu Ken" to allow Voltes V to do his Finishing Move, the "V-no-Ji-Giri", for one thing. Voltes can also summon enough of it to form the "Choudenji Ball" that electrocutes the Armored Beast Knight and softens their hard maxingal metal enough to allow his sword to cut through, for another thing.
  • Lightning Lash: Voltes V can use its belt as a whip. The same belts are also used for the Superelectromagnetic Tops.
  • Only the Chosen May Pilot: Each member of the Voltes Team had to go through rigourous training to pilot Voltes V in their respective field - guns/motorcross for Kenichi, swimming for Hiyoshi, martial arts for Daijiro, Koga-ryu Ninjutsu for Megumi and rodeo for Ippei.
  • Primary-Color Champion: Voltes V's colour scheme consists largely of blue, amongst red and white, with hints of yellow, and was invented to defend the earth. As pointed out by Super Robot Blueprint, Gohl based the design of Voltes V on the uniforms of his first wife's personal guards - the same ones Heinel inherited.
  • Robot Superhero: Voltes V is the hero of the enslaved Boazanians and the various humans it's entrusted to protect.
  • Rocket Punch: CHAIN KNUCKLES! This move consists of Voltes V aiming it's hand at someone as it detaches from the arm and hits them square in the face.
  • Signature Move: Courtesy of the sword, Voltes V performs the V-Cut nearly every episode.
  • Stealthy Colossus: Voltes V takes on Daiand this way. The Volt machines form behind a cloud, setting it up for a nasty shock once it sees the fully formed robot.
  • Telescoping Robot: Voltes V includes a vast artillery of weapons, including cement projectiles. Its belt was in reality two whips, its midsection stored a spinning top, the ornament on its chest hid its sword's blade...
  • Transformation Name Announcement: VOOLTEEEESSSS FIIIVEEE!!!!!. Followed by extending arms to form a "V" and an Ass Kicking Pose.
  • Utility Belt: The "belt" on Voltes V can detach to two whips.
  • Vertical Mecha Fins: On the back, because of Kenichi's Volt Cruiser vehicle - it's a jet and those "fins" are in fact its wings.
  • Zorro Mark: Voltes always finishes off the Beast Knights by slicing a giant V into them with its sword.

Other Big Falcon inhabitants

    Professor Kentaro Gō (Spoilers)

Prof. Kentarou Gō/Prince Gohlnote

Voiced by: Yuu Mizushima, Hideo Nihei (Young) (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gohl_from_voltes_v.png
Click here to see his past identity (SPOILER)

The father of the Gō brothers. He went missing after warning about the invasion of Boazanians. But as the series goes on, his true identity unravels to the surprise of many: He's actually Prince Gohl of the Boazanians, but born hornless, considered an abnormality for his people. Despite so, he's still the Wise Prince of his people, wearing fake horns until that fact was exposed by his jealous and ambitious cousin Zambajil Zu. For that, he's branded a traitor and had to escape to Earth, with the knowledge that Zambajil Zu will set his sights to Earth. Additionally, he had a wife in Boazan that died in childbirth, and the son he had would be known as Prince Heinel.

  • Abusive Offspring: Prince Heinel is his oldest son, but neither of them know this until the series finale. Sadly, Heinel grew up with the same cruel mentality Gohl's father did towards hornless Boazanians.
  • Abusive Parents: His father tried to murder him when he was born because he was hornless. When he asked his mother if he was meant to be a slave and took off his prosthetics, he punched him and threatened him into silence. Gohl himself averts this trope with Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi.
  • Action Dad: Apart from creating Voltes V, Kentaro is also the leader of several Boazanian slave rebellions and manufactured weapons for them. He is willing to die in conflict if it means he can emancipate the slaves. Three of his four sons follow in his footsteps.
  • Alien Among Us: He is secretly a hornless Boazanian; something his own children didn't know of until after the Alien Invasion occured.
  • All-Loving Hero: Hamaguchi and Mitsuyo describe him as such to the Go siblings. The former even said that the reason for Voltes V's creation was because he loved the earth and wanted to protect it.
  • Animal Motifs: Birds. He founded Big Falcon and his symbol in The Resistance is of twin doves - the very same doves on the dagger he gave to his wife Lozaria, that she gave to her son, Heinel.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Unknowingly, Gohl is this to Heinel. This was actually a deliberate choice by Tadao Nagahama.
Tadao Nagahama, Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection #14: "Up until now, when it came to robot anime, the battle scenes were its sales point, and the story concluded in one episode. Voltes V was a creation intended to go beyond that. I wanted to get behind the perspectives of the enemy to express their psychological aspects to the audiences. I also wanted to create some sort of blood relationship between the hero and its enemy. Previous anime have never dealt with social themes but in Voltes, I have presented a situation where there was prejudice between those who had horns and those who didn't. And I wanted to intigrate that situation into this epic saga. This work delves into the lives of different people. Since Prince Heinel's character was well written, it was possible for the audience to see things from his perspective. But that is not enough, take one step further. La Gohl was enslaved because he did not have horns. What would have happened if he didn't stand up for his cause? He risked his own life to fight for his cause, believing that there should be no slavery among their people. La Gohl's agenda for life is just as worthy as that of Prince Heinel's. This work requires a lot of thinking from the audience. I would be grateful if this work be given some thoughts and applied to your own lives."
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Prince Gohl is a handsome Bishounen with dark, messy purple hair and a heart of gold. He also wears elegant clothes. As evidenced by Heinel, being a Pretty Boy runs in the family.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: In his flashback growing up, he expresses his disgust at the treatment of hornless Boazanians to his mother.
Gohl: "Why is it so? Why are the hornless ones treated with such cruelty?"
  • Cartwright Curse: Every woman he falls in love with is doomed to death, be it through the war or other cirumstances. And to rub salt in the would, in the series finale, he finds his long-lost firstborn son...only to lose him too.
  • Commonality Connection: Both him and Mitsuyo are scientists.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: La Gohl went back to Boazania to convince Zambajil to leave the Earth alone, but when Zambajil asked him to use his knowledge in science to create weapons for the Boazanian Empire, he refused, and was subsequently imprisoned. Gohl was then freed by Dange, and led more slave rebellions, before leading some members of resistance to Earth as refugees.
  • Dad's Off Fighting in the War: Gohl leads the War Refugees of Boazania into a resistance camp where they manufacture weapons, maneuvre the Solar Bird and support the Voltes team into quelling the Alien Invasion.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: From his own father trying to murder him when he was a baby, to his wife dying in childbirth. And that's not even the iceberg of the absue he faced when he was enslaved.
  • Defector from Decadence: Gohl was born into the highest echelon of Boazan society, only to have the rug pulled from under his feet because of a vengeful, jealous cousin. When he was offered his position back, he refused because it came with the caveat of making weapons for them, which he knew were going to be used on the weak and the dissenters. Gohl rejects the Boazanian nobility at every turn because he refuses to partake in oppression and wants an empire that is just for all. It is only after the Boazanian Empire is overthrown that Gohl finally takes the crown and rules Boazania the way he dreamed of when he was little boy.
  • Disappeared Dad: He went to Boazania hoping to convince his cousin to spare Earth, but ended up imprisoned as a result.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When Gohl was born, his father became outraged because the baby lacked physical features he desired.
  • Doves Mean Peace: As leader of the Boazanian slave rebellion, his emblem is a pair of twin doves. It becomes an important plot point when Heinel pulls out his dagger, and Gohl is shocked to see the twin doves on it - he gave that dagger to his first wife Lozaria.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English and American-English dubs, his name was changed to Ned Armstrong/ Baron Hrothgar.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Kentarus.
    • In the Catalan dub, his name was changed to Dr. Richard Armstrong. The same dub changed Professor Hamaguchi's name to Dr. Richard Smith, averting the One-Steve Limit.
    • In the Korean dub, his name was changed to Mr. Oh.
  • Fallen Prince: He was once the well-respected Science Minister of Boazania, but for the mere sin of not having the physical traits "needed" in Boazan, he was stripped of his royal rank and humiliated.
  • First Contact: Mitsuyo was his. It sooned blossomed into a romance, and they got married and had three sons. Kentaro wanted to stay on Earth and raise them, but Zambajil called him back to Boazania and had him imprisoned.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: In his youth, he was a skilled engineer and was elected the Boazanian Minister of Science and Technology. Even after he was enslaved, he used his genius to create weapons for The Resistance, which led Zambajil to covet him and offer him a spot alongside him in the nobility under the condition that he used his technology to aid the Boazanian military. Once he fled to Earth, he created Voltes V, and designed the robot so intricately that it could surpass the Boazanian's strongest defense system. His son Hiyoshi inherited this from him.
  • The Good King: Gohl wants a society where everyone is equal and slavery is abolished. His spirit inspires many around him to join the resistance. In the series finale, he declines going back to earth with his sons in favour of devoting himself to making sure Boazania is equal for all.
  • Going Native: After Gohl crashes his ship on Earth, he assimilates in Japanese society by taking Mitsuyo's surname adopting the name "Kentaro". Even his own sons have no idea he's an alien until very late in the series.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: In his flashback, he was born with blonde hair, something Heinel inherited - and he is indeed a kind, thoughtful, man, ready to sacrifice his own life for the cause.
  • Happily Married: Twice.
    • Kentaro and Mitsuyo Go were happily married, and Mitsuyo continued to love him even after finding out his Dark and Troubled Past as an alien refugee from Planet Boazan. She committed herself to helping his cause on his home planet and training their sons to become Voltes V pilots. Even after he was forced to leave Earth to join the war, it's revealed he has a picture of her in his Home Base.
    • General Dange reveals that Kentaro (who's real name is actually Gohl), when on Boazan, was once married to a beautiful woman named Lozaria, who loved him despite the fact that he was from what their Planet considered a Slave Race. She willingly kept his secret, until the day of his coronation when his cousin exposed him for being Hornless (a mark of the Slave Race) and he was thrown in jail afterwards. Tragically, Lozaria died in childbirth while having her and Gohl's son.
  • Has a Type: Both women who he fell in love with were kind-hearted and had brown, braided hair.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: When he meets Mitsuyo for the first time, his hair is scraggly and untamed and he looks like a mess since he's just fled from a slave rebellion. Later, he's seen wearing a nice tuxedo with his hair looking better as he marries her.
  • Hide Your Otherness: Twice.
    • His father ordered him to hide his lack of horns from the public.
    • To a lesser extent, on Earth, he hides the fact that he's an alien by adopting the alias Kentaro Go. His experience with Boazan technology is why he's such a Gadgeteer Genius in the earthling's eyes, but they all believe him to be a mere, unsuspecting Japanese scientist.
  • How Dad Met Mom: Twice.
    • He met Lozaria, Heinel's mother, after graduating from the Boazanian Institute of Science and Technology.
    • In his flashback, he met Mitsuyo when he was fleeing from the Boazanian Empire and crashed his spaceship into Japan, a country in Planet Earth. Mitsuyo discovered him and cradled his unconscious body, begging him to awake. Once he awoke, it was Love at First Sight. The two got married, and Kenichi, Daijiro and Hiyoshi happened afterwards.
  • Human Aliens: Kentaro is a hornless Boazanian, so this trope is in full effect, This also makes his sons half-Human Aliens. The only one not of Boazanian blood in the Go family is Mitsuyo.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Gohl, Gaulle or Gour? It is clear that his family name is "La", though.
  • Kidnapped Scientist: Zuhl kidnaps him with the purpose of using his help to overthrow Heinel. However, he is rejected. Angered, Zuhl tries to ensure he stays a hostage so he can force him eventually, but Kentaro escapes.
  • Made Out to Be a Jerkass: The Boazanians (including Heinel) are told that he "betrayed" the planet when he was actually trying to end slavery, being from the Slave Race himself.
  • Manly Facial Hair: When he went to Earth for the first time, after cleaning up, he had a nice thin mustache. When he arrived Earth for the second time, he's grown a lot of hair after his captivity in Boazania.
  • No One Could Survive That!:
    • Mitsuyo thought he was dead because he never returned after going back to Boazania, but he was actually imprisoned.
    • Heinel believed him to be dead because his forces ensured Kentaro fell off a cliff and drowned. Episodes later, it's revealed that Dange and several other Boazanian rebels came to his aid and brought him back to their secret base.
  • Not Afraid to Die:
    • Gohl didn't originally plan to escape to Earth, telling his squadron of Boazanian ex-slaves that he was willing to fight and die alongside them. However, they urged to him to flee, stating that he was their final hope for a future free of slavery and he was too valuable to die given his intelligence. Managing to safeguard a ship for his travel, they shielded him with their bodies as the Boazanian Empire's forces opened fire on them, causing a frenzied Gohl to hurry into the ship and fly as far as he could. It was by pure chance that the planet the ship eventually crash-landed on happened to be Earth, which had a populace full of people that looked like him. With the kind-hearted Mitsuyo being his First Contact, and with the other humans he met treating him like an equal, Gohl fell in love with the planet and felt a new hope for the future.
    • When Zuhl kidnaps him, Gohl says he doesn't care if he dies if it means his forces will be crushed, and encourages Voltes V to attack him. When they see him shed tears, they stop, however, realizing he's the actual Kentaro and not a decoy.
  • Offing the Offspring: When he was born, he had no horns. His father, Oral, considered filicide and was about to stab him had he not been held back by the doctor that delivered him. His wife begged him to spare the child and offered her own life in exchange. Unwilling to kill his wife, Oral relented and agreed to raise the boy with prosthetic horns.
  • Otherworldly Technicolour Hair: Something that should have tipped you off about Kentaro being Not Quite Human is his purple hair, when most of the anime's Japanese characters follow Phenotype Stereotype.
  • Pastel-Chalked Freeze Frame: When Heinel takes out his dagger, he notices the twin doves on the hilt and realizes it as the same dagger he gave to Lozaria. When Heinel states that the dagger was given to him by his mother, the truth becomes clear - the child that Lozaria gave her life to have was Heinel. He is coloured this way when making this connection.
  • Princess in Rags: This is actually the fate that befell him in Boazania, as when he was a slave, he only wore rags.
  • Punny Name: The Boazanian Empire is a Fantasy Counterpart Culture to France, and his name is Gohl.
  • Rage Breaking Point: He begged his slavers to at least let him send flowers to Lozaria's grave after she died, only to be met with further abuse. Gohl finally released his rage by kickstarting one slave rebellion after the other.
  • Rebel Prince: After Zambajil forces him to be a slave, Gohl becomes this trope. Refusing to take the treatment of the Hornless lying down, he starts slave rebellions all over Boazania.
  • Red Is Heroic: He wore a lot of red in his younger days, much like his second son, The Leader Kenichi.
  • Rightful King Returns: In the series finale, he takes his place as the rightful ruler of Boazania, abolishing the Fantastic Caste System.
  • Scientist Video Journal: During the Time Warp Arc, it's revealed that Big Falcon is secretly a spaceship and was designed to eventually fly to Boazania and aid the slave rebellion. To activate its spaceship mode, Kentaro Go leaves one final video recording explaining how it works. By then, Kentaro has already been enslaved again on Boazan but cries tears of joy upon realizing that his plan worked and they're arriving to set him free.
  • Smart People Build Robots: Alongside Mitsuyo, General Oka and Hamaguchi, Kentaro created the titular robot.
  • Undead Tax Exemption: He was able to forge a new life on Earth as Kentaro Gō, becoming a well-respected professor, the creator of Voltes V and a loving father of his three sons. It helps that he has made connections with his second wife Mitsuyo and his friends Professor Hamaguchi and General Oka in the government to become part of society without issue.
  • We Can Rule Together: He is offered this twice.
    • While he initially led a slave rebellion before fleeing to Earth, when he returns to Boazania to convince Zambajil to stop his galactic conquest, Zambajil offers him his position in nobility back...under the condition that he joins them and manufactures weaponry for the military using his skills. Disgusted, Gohl refuses.
    • In episode 18, Zuhl asks Gohl to join his side for the same reason, stating that he needs Gohl's technology and genius to depose of Prince Heinel. Naturally, Gohl has no interest.
  • Would Hurt a Child: While under duress, he smacks his own youngest son Hiyoshi at least three times in Episode 15, and even attempts to shoot him a few times. However, that wasn't him but rather a robot clone sent by the Boazanians. The real Kentaro would never hurt a child.
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: This happens a lot to Kentaro Gō, since the Boazanians lure in the Voltes Team by saying they have him at least three different times. It's one of the devices that keeps the story running.
  • Your Son All Along: I'm sorry, Gohl, but your oldest son is the very Prince crushing your rebellion.

She co-designed Voltes V with her husband, Professor Hamaguchi and General Oka, and eventually saw her husband leaving and going missing, while warning her that the Boazanians will come to invade. For that, she had to train her children to prepare for the day of reckoning as warned by her husband. Despite her harsh attitude, she cared for her children, willingly giving her life to protect them.

  • Action Mom: Flew a jet and died in battle just for her three sons.

  • Inter Species Romance: Though her husband looked human enough to pass as a normal Earthling.
  • Mama Bear: To her three sons, Kenichi, Daijiro, and Hiyoshi, to the point of giving her life for them. Her last words were to the three of them as well.
  • Second Love: To Kentaro, as his first was Lozaria. However in episode 27, it's shown that he still loves her and has a portrait of her in his quarters of the Boazanian Resistance Camp. Removing said portrait reveals a button that leads to a secret room.

    Professor Hamaguchi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hakase_hamaguchi.png
Prof. Hamaguchi
He is the commander of Camp Big Falcon fortress at the beginning of the Voltes V series. He helped design and build the Voltes V robot and is a good friend of Prof. Gō. He is somewhat a father figure to the Voltes team, especially to the Gō brothers due to his relationship with their father. He managed Big Falcon on Prof. Gō's behalf until he was killed saving Voltes V.
  • All There in the Manual: According to the Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection, Hamaguchi is Ippei's paternal grandfather. In the anime, neither of them mention this, with Ippei stating Hamaguchi basically kidnapped him.
    • It also mentions that he dislikes octupi and sea cucumber.
  • Badass Bookworm: In Episode 12, when Boazanians follow him and General Oka to their secret lab, he's just as capable of holding the soldiers off as his Acrofatic companion. And in Episode 13, he escapes from being held hostage by tackling Jangal as soon as his sword was lowered while gloating, knocks away the other two nearby soldiers, and hijacks an escape shuttle from the Skull Ship.
  • Calling the Young Man Out: In Episode 5, he calls out Kenichi for wanting to abandon Hiyoshi.
  • Cool Old Guy: Though he can be strict and harsh, he is a caring father figure to the Voltes Team.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The Philippine-English, American-English and Catalan dubs change his name to Dr. Richard Smith.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Dr. Esperus.
    • In the Brazilian-Portuguese dub, his name was changed to Dr. Smith.
    • In the Korean dub, his name was changed to Dr. Kim.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He ordered his soldiers to forcibly kidnap Ippei Mine in the middle of his public rodeo championship tour and separate him from his horse Eiffel so that Ippei will be taken to Big Falcon where he underwent Training from Hell and become a member of Voltes Team without giving him a choice.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Like Mitsuyo, Hamaguchi dies saving the Voltes Team, his last words being that he thinks the Go brother's father is alive.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Hamaguchi dies in Episode 13, crashing his ship into a Beast Fighter the same way Mitsuyo did, before telling the Go brothers he believes that their father is alive.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While he's concerned with stopping the Boazanian invasion force, he also keeps his pilot's circumstances and feelings in mind, like allowing Ippei to have his horse at the base.
  • Team Dad: A parental figure for his best friend's sons and their friends.
  • Tuckerization: His name is a Portmanteau of Tadao Nagahama (the creator of the Robot Romance Trilogy) and Shoichi Taguchi (the screenplay writer for Voltes V).

Professor Sakonji

A protege of Kentaro and Hamaguchi that only appeared halfway of the series, shortly after Hamaguchi sacrificed himself. He's a very strict commander that nevertheless still had the best interests of the team and the defense of Earth.

  • Adapted Out:
    • Want to know why there isn't a listed Cuban Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese voice actor for him? Because the dubs of those adapted Voltes V into a movie and cut him out.
    • He isn't present in the Korean dub either.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Sakonji debuts by entering Big Falcon after it has no one to lead it since Professor Hamaguchi is dead and General Oka is busy managing the Earth Defense Force. He stops the Big Falcon workers from leaving the base and explains how to fix the base's technical issues, while commanding Voltes V in battle. At the end of the episode, Oka explains that Sakonji is a protege of Kentaro and Hamaguchi.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Shortly after his appearance, he gave a super harsh training for the Voltes Team so they could pilot better, save themselves and protect Earth better.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English dub, his name was changed to Dr. Hook.
    • In The Italian dub, his name was changed to Dr. Barrion.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Kozo Sakonji, Sakunji or Sakaonji?
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He made it clear that he's not THAT nice and began as a harsh Drill Sergeant Nasty, but he did all of those because he doesn't want the team to die and not because they're just pilots of Voltes, but because he swore to protect the team after the passing of Hamaguchi. After his first appearance he becomes a much more likable character, although he can still be extremely aggressive and set in his ways at times.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He might look like an unreasonable, uptight person, but he can be convinced to listen to reason. Or sometimes, that convincing wasn't even necessary.

General Oka
General Oka is a commander of the Earth Defense Force and co-designed Voltes V. He is also a practicioner of the Koga-Ryu ninja style, an art his daughter Megumi is set to inherit. After the death of Hamaguchi, Oka commanded the Voltes Team temporarily until Professor Sakonji arrived. Oka is Secretly Dying from an unspecified illness.

  • Abusive Parents: While he is generally a caring father, in Episode 9 he slaps Megumi because she abandoned her teammates during an attack from the Boazanians. It was a one-time incident, and a severe Out of Character moment.
  • Acrofatic: Oka descends from a clan of ninjas and is a skilled martial artist. However, he's also a case of Big Fun.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands: In episode 15, he knocks Robot!Kentaro's rifle out of his hands with a shuriken.
  • Danger Takes a Backseat: In episode 31, Oka is oblivious to a mind-controlled Megumi in the back of his vehicle. However, when he does notice her, he realizes that she's being controlled by the ring and shoots it with his gun, destroying it. Unfortunately, the ring transforms into Beast Fighter Daiand. Knowing that Voltes V can't form without Megumi, Oka hands her the only jetpack in the aircraft and tells her to escape, while he lures Daiand away. Daiand eventually shoots enough projectiles at his helicopter to make it explode, and Oka tearfully manages to say "Megumi! My daughter! Be strong! Get back to the base!" before the explosion claims him. Megumi, who is watching ths unfold, breaks into tears, and when she reunites with her teammates, they subject Daiand to a heavy whooping.

  • Gondor Calls for Aid: In episode 9, Oka and Hamaguchi attend a conference amongst many other world leaders to plead for them to take the threat of a Boazanian Invasion seriously. Unfortunately, the other representatives are too busy argung amongst themselves to come to a conclusion. But come the next episode, they do lend their aid after he pleads with them just before they could flee to the airport in light of Namazungo's attack.
  • Gratuitous Ninja: It may seem out of place to have one in a mecha anime, but him and his daughter fit in.
  • Papa Wolf: A variant. He deeply cares about his daughter, but when danger strikes, he trusts her to handle it on her own because he knows that she's a Badass Adorable.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When Kentaro warned the Earthlings of the incoming Boazanian invasion, not many people heeded it, apart from Mitsuyo, Hamaguchi, Oka and a few others. When Ippei defends them and says that they are no different from their fellow humans, Nakamura accuses him of being a Boazanian sympathizer too. Ippei then punches Nakamura, though Kenichi restrains him from escalating the situation further. Dr. Sakonji lets him go. • "Not So Different" Remark: Nakamura accuses the Voltes Team of not knowing how it's like to lose your parents to the Boazanians. Ippei rebukes him by saying that the Go brothers lost their mother and Megumi lost her father to the Boazanians, but unlike Nakamura, they didn't let their hatred consume them.
