The Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection (マジックボックス ロマンロボアニメクライマックスセレクション) is a 1980s supplementary guide to the Robot Romance Trilogy. It was co-authored by Tadao Nagahama, Akihiro Kanayama, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Nobuyoshi Sasakado and Kei Iizima.

It contains behind-the-scenes information, concept art, trivia, animation frames, character sketches, director commentary and other miscellaneous information related to the three anime of the trilogy, Combattler V, Voltes V and Daimos.

For tropes related to it's parent series, see the Robot Romance Trilogy, or the individual pages related to its anime. For Nagahama's other Super Robot infobook, see here.

If you're wondering where the name "Roman Robo" comes from - it's due to the taiga-drama style of the shows incorporated by director Nagahama.

Tropes that apply to the Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: On the cover, Kenichi's hair is brown, even though it is black in the anime.
  • Adjective Noun Fred: The Japanese titles for the first two entries of the Robot Romance Trilogy are "Super-Electromagnetic Machine Combattler V" and "Super-Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V". The final entry is known as "Fighting Shogun Daimos".
  • All There in the Manual: The book is the "manual", in this case.
    • Combattler V
      • Chizuru's three sizes are B84-W60-Height unknown.
    • Voltes V:
      • Kenichi's birthday is June 22 and Ippei's is November 24. Daijiro's is November 18, Hiyoshi's is October 20 and Megumi's is May 17. Heinel's birthday is February 2, and Katherine's birthday is May 1.
      • Kenichi is 18, Ippei is 18, Daijiro is 17, Hiyoshi is 10 and Megumi is 16. Heinel is 18 years old, and Katherine is 20.
      • Professor Hamaguchi is Ippei's maternal grandfather. He also does not like sea cucumber.
      • Professor Hamaguchi was Mitsuyo Go's college teacher during her school days.
      • Katherine's mother was Heinel's wet nurse/nanny. After Heinel's maternal grandparents died, the Rii family raised him alongside Katherine. The two became friends when as young children, Katherine saw Heinel being bullied and felt protective of him.
    • Daimos:
      • Richter is 19 years old.
      • Miwa is 65 years old.
      • Margarete is Erika and Richter's governess and educator.
      • Raiza has a battle suit like Richter.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Discussed.
Tadao Nagahama, Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection #14: "Up until now, when it came to robot anime, the battle scenes were its sales point, and the story concluded in one episode. Voltes V was a creation intended to go beyond that. I wanted to get behind the perspectives of the enemy to express their psychological aspects to the audiences. I also wanted to create some sort of blood relationship between the hero and its enemy. Previous anime have never dealt with social themes but in Voltes, I have presented a situation where there was prejudice between those who had horns and those who didn't. And I wanted to intigrate that situation into this epic saga. This work delves into the lives of different people. Since Prince Heinel's character was well written, it was possible for the audience to see things from his perspective. But that is not enough, take one step further. La Gohl was enslaved because he did not have horns. What would have happened if he didn't stand up for his cause? He risked his own life to fight for his cause, believing that there should be no slavery among their people. La Gohl's agenda for life is just as worthy as that of Prince Heinel's. This work requires a lot of thinking from the audience. I would be grateful if this work be given some thoughts and applied to your own lives."
  • Ascended Extra: Inverted. On the cover, there's the main male protagonist, the main female protagonist and the main villain and the Humongous Mecha of each anime from each iteration of trilogy. Each iteration except Daimos, where only the main male protagonist, main female protagonist and Humongous Mecha are seen.
  • Central Theme: According to Tadao Nagahama, each entry of the trilogy has it's own Central Theme.
  • Does Not Like Spam: The book reveals that Professor Hamaguchi does not like sea cucumbers. This was never brought up in the original anime.
  • Engrish:
    • On the cover and the index page, Combattler V is spelled as "Conbattler V".
    • The same typo is also on the back of the book.
    • Also on the index page, "climax" is spelled "crimax".
    • The same error happens again on another page.
    • One page is spelt "Top Secret Cel of Voltes V" when it should be "Top Secret Cell of Voltes V".
  • Evil Is Bigger: In the Daimos poster of Kazuya and Erika, the two are depicted holding hands on top of a mountain while Richter overlooks them, his face taking up most of the image.
  • Fanservice: Of the non-sexual kind. We get a lot of poster prints of Official Couple Hyoma and Chizuru, as well as the three blonde Pretty Boy antagonists of each anime.
  • Foil: Many stills of the Voltes V section portray Heinel and Gohl against each other as they realize they're father and son.
  • Foreshadowing: Many a poster has Kenichi and Heinel on equal footing, with Kentaro Go overlooking them. Those who have watched Voltes V would know the twist that Kentaro is also Heinel's father.
  • Gratuitous English: The book is in Japanese, but some words and titles are in English, which leads to hilarious results.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Some sketches of Kazuya have him with a football. This could possibly be a reference to the fact that in the first draft of Voltes V, Kenichi was depicted as a football player.
    • Concept art of Megumi depicts her with a perm, just like her predecessor Chizuru Nanbara was slated to have.
  • Not Drawn to Scale: On the cover, none of the characters are drawn to scale. Though, you could probably tell that from the positioning of their feet.
  • Odd Name Out: Daimos lacks the prefix "Super-electromagnetic" ("Chou-denji").
  • Perpetual Smiler: Kazuya is Hot-Blooded in canon, but many sketches of his childhood in the book depict him as this.
  • Red Is Heroic: Notice something familiar about the colour schemes of Hyouma, Kenichi and Kazuya?
  • Space Romans: The cover has one Space Greek/Hindu (Garuda) and one Space Frenchman (Heinel).
  • Super Robot: The book contains behind-the-scenes information on the titular three Super Robots - did you know Voltes V was meant to have a shield?
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: The concept art of Kenichi looks near-exact to the sketches of young Kazuya.
  • Tyop on the Cover: Combattler V is spelled as "Con Battler V".
  • What Could Have Been: In-universe, this guide divulges what concepts were scrapped for the anime.
    • Daimos:
      • Had Daimos not been cut down to 44 episodes instead of the scheduled 50, the final episodes would be about the humans and the Baam overcoming their issues and forming a friendship, while the Baam were to migrate to Mars and start a new civilization there. The Baam would be led by Erika, while Kazuya represented the delegates of the humans.
      • This was to be the fate of Miwa:
As the departure ceremony reaches its climax and the crowds of both planets are in raptures, one man mutters in confusion, "...The Baam-seijin are traitors! The Baam-seijin cannot be trusted!..." The man, who was presumed to be a vagrant due to his tattered clothes, disappears into the crowd, while brandishing a toy gun with a dead battery that makes a harsh sound. He was none other than Sakamori Miwa, the former commander-in-chief of the Pacific Headquarters of the United Nations Earth Defense Force, but no one recognized him.
