Main Characters

Emma

Emma Duvall

"I am done playing your games, and I am done with you."

Played By: Willa Fitzgerald, Madison Wolfe (young)

The Good Girl. Emma is the peacemaker of her popular group. This might be due, at least in part, to Emma’s father walking out on her and her mother years ago. It’s been a rough road back to normalcy, but Emma is resilient and always tries to look for the good in people — something the killer takes advantage of.

Action Girl: Throughout the series, Emma goes from a terrified victim/traumatized survivor to slowly becoming a fearless and courageous fighter.
Action Survivor: While she is explicitly called the Final Girl by Noah and is targeted by Ghostface, Emma's a pretty straight forward survivor.
Ambiguous Situation: In Season 2, though Ghostface is most definitely real, it's unclear if either time Emma encounters them personally it was actually them or just a hallucination.
The Atoner: From the first episode, she's trying to make up for the embarrassing video she allowed Nina to make of Audrey and Rachel and the video going viral. Once people start being killed, it only gets worse.
Be Careful What You Wish For: In "Wanna Play a Game?" Emma demands Ghostface stop harassing her over the phone. Ghostface complies, and subsequently begins targeting her friends, culminating in Riley, and later Will's murders.
Beat Them at Their Own Game: In season 2, she decides to not kill Kieran, by doing this, she would have ended the season without becoming a killer herself while he got arrested, therefore winning in every aspect against him. However, as Audrey pointed, it was actually a case of Cruel Mercy, because her choice not to kill Kieran by herself caused Kieran to suffer a worse death than just a bullet to his head.
Berserk Button: Don't badmouth her family. Haley Meyers found that out firsthand.
Beware of the Nice Ones
Blood-Splattered Innocents: In "In the Trenches", after triggering the Death Trap the killer has set for Will, an industrial farm cutter that cuts him in half and his blood spatters all over her, to her horror.
Bottomless Magazines: In the season 2 finale, she gets herself a gun. At no point she seems to ever pick up more ammo but it never runs out. 13 bullets were shot through the episode, meaning that at the end she it was either empty or had 2 bullets left, depending on the model.
Break the Cutie: Happens to her in Season 1, mixing with straight-up Sanity Slippage in Season 2.
The Cassandra: Predictably, nobody believes her when she realizes there's copycat killer on the loose because of her PTSD. Her being drugged when she was supposedly attacked by the killer didn't help her credibility, either. The only one to believe her and take her side is Audrey, who has her own reasons to be aware of the killer's presence. When Jake's body is, ugh... 'unveiled', (all over Brooke) all her friends believe her.
Disappeared Dad: Her father, Kevin Duval left her and Maggie when she was six. In "Hello, Emma" Sheriff Hudson launches a search for him. A hallucination of him returns to visit Emma in the hospital in "Ghosts", which also reveals he and Maggie split because Kevin discovered she and Brandon James had a child together.
- He returns in Season 2, after recieving emails purportedly from Riley, telling him Emma needed him.
Expy: Of Sidney Prescott by default. And in a weird sense, Jill from Scream 4. But unlike her, she is a good person.
Fatal Attractor: She really does have the worse luck in love - 1. Will, whose first time with her was on a dare, 2. Kieran, who turned out to be the season 1 accomplice and season 2 killer, and 3. Alex a.k.a. Tom, who murdered a whole bunch of people for Emma because he's in love with her, thinking they're the same.
Final Girl: Quite explicitly, though similarly to Sidney Prescott, she isn't exactly the epitome of purity and goodness. Instead, she somehow ended up with the likes of Nina and Brooke, straying from then disappointing her former best friend in the process. In season 2, Noah's board has her picture with the label Final Girl.
Frame-Up: She, along with Audrey, are the main suspects in the mayor's murder in "Heavenly Creatures", especially after when Emma puts her fingerprints all over the murder weapon.
Hypocrite: Along with her Took a Level in Jerkass in Season 2, she has become very demanding at people telling her the truth about anything and everything while being less than honest with them herself. Some instances are her getting mad at Kieran when Kieran told Sheriff Acosta about her finding Jake's phone in her bag, this despite her actually wanting to give the phone to the police herself until Audrey talked her out of it, and not long afterwards, she promises Kieran that she won't go to a potentially dangerous place because it could be a trap by Ghostface but she goes anyway, and when he asks her why she lied to him she says she didn't lie, she "just changed her mind", and then immediately asks him to trust her.
Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: She manages to get a hold of a gun to fight back against Ghostface at several moments in Season 2, mainy near the end, and the girl couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, more than once being attacked by Ghostface and shooting him many times, missing every shot as he gets away. The only time she actually manages to hit someone, she hits Eli, who was actually innocent and trying to help her.
Love Triangle: With her boyfriend Will and newcomer Kieran. In Season 2 it's now with her boyfriend Kieran and Kieran's cousin Eli.
My God, What Have I Done?:
- Has this reaction after Rachel is found dead, believing the video she helped circulate had something to do with it.
- Happens again in the following episode, though it's arguably more justifiable that she feel guilt over Riley's murder.
- And again in "In the Trenches", when Emma is the inadvertent catalyst to Will's demise, which occurs right in front of her.
Nice Girl: Affable, polite and pretty much adored by all her friends, whatever her flaws are, drifting away from her childhood best friend Audrey for the popular crowd, and being partially responsible for Nina's video being circulated and ostracizing Audrey and her girlfriend, Rachel.
Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Thanks to the Killer's manipulations, Emma ends up unwittingly causing the deaths of both Riley and Will. She also creates a fake alibi to get Audrey released from police custody after the latter is taken in when her DNA is found inside the Ghostface mask found at one of the Killer's hideouts, and it's strongly implied that Audrey was Piper's accomplice all along. This extends into Season 2, as Audrey's previous involvement with Piper and getting away with it (in part thanks to Emma's false alibi) is one of the main reasons for the new Ghostface's rampage, though, it's ultimately subverted when it's revealed that Audrey only brought Piper to Lakewood to film a documentary, unaware of her true intentions, along with the fact that Piper's accomplice was actually Kieran.
Properly Paranoid: In Season 2, by "Happy Birthday to Me", Emma is sure there is a new killer on the loose after escaping from the new Ghostface. Most of her friends initially think it's only because of the trauma she went through and she's hallucinating. Turns out she's right.
Sanity Slippage: The events following Will's death push Emma into a state of shock, in so far as she stops sleeping, develops an intense paranoia, denial, mistrust of everyone who tries to help her, and experiences a series of surreal hallucinations.
- She still experiences this in Season 2 as a result of PTSD, to the point that not even the audience can be sure which of her encounters with Ghostface are real and which are imagined.
Secret Legacy: Not quite a legacy actually, Emma and her mother were both Final Girls from different killing sprees.
Town Girls: The Butch to Brooke's Femme and Riley's Neither. In Season 2, is the Neither to Brooke's Femme and Audrey's Butch.
Undying Loyalty: To her friends, especially to Audrey.
Unwitting Pawn: When Ghostface kidnaps Will a second time, he baits Emma into running to assist Will which leads to her tripping a trip wire that activates Will's Death Trap.

Audrey

Audrey Jensen

Played By: Bex Taylor-Klaus

"Who's to say a woman can't torture and kill just as well as a man?"

A strong-minded and fearless individual who's brash attitude sometimes gets her into trouble. Audrey is a social outsider at GWHS, a creative outcast who’s doing her best to be herself while pursuing her dream of being a filmmaker. She’s also figuring out her sexuality, which leads to a romantic tryst with another girl… and a cyber-bullying incident that kicks the whole story off.

Action Girl: While she is usually calm and reserved, she can be a fighter at times.
All Love Is Unrequited: Audrey was deeply in love with Emma, which was something Emma didn't know about until "The Vanishing" in season 2. So, when Emma went to the the Alpha Bitch posse, Audrey was deeply hurt by this action, causing her to lash out at Emma.
Amateur Sleuth: Audrey and Noah are more involved with the "detective work" aspect than the other teens.
Ambiguously Bi: An unusual example in that she's clearly attracted to women, while her attraction to men is ambiguous. She states in the pilot that she's not a lesbian, and Emma suggests she's "bi-curious", but she's never shown expressing interest in men, and all of her known crushes and love interests have been women. She does kiss Noah in season 2, but they were both high on ayahuasca at the time, and Audrey was picturing herself kissing Rachel. She later confirms to Noah that she only sees him as a friend.
Ambiguous Situation: The second season makes the extent of her involvement in Piper's murders very unclear. She's entirely innocent.
Camera Fiend: In the first season, she rarely appears without her handheld video camera.
Crowbar Combatant: Brings a crowbar when she and Emma explore Lakewood General in Episode 4. However, it seems to be her go-to weapon.
Deadpan Snarker: Her defense mechanism. She reacts to almost everything with a cool, dry wit. The one time this cracks is when she hears about Rachael's death.
Expy: One of the few characters in the show who arguably has a direct parallel in the films. Her look and personality seem to be based on Kirby, although this becomes less evident as she's further fleshed out.
Final Girl: She survived the season 1, 2 and the Halloween special killing sprees, alongside Emma.
Frame-Up: She, along with Emma, are the main suspects in the mayor's murder in "Heavenly Creatures", even if Audrey was already a prime suspect.
Genre Savvy: Not as much as Noah, but she has her moments. In the Season 2 finale, she responds to Emma telling her "I'll be right back" with "Why would you say that?!"
Good All Along: Kieran was Piper's actual accomplice. Audrey is telling the truth when she says she had nothing to do with the murders.
It's Personal: She's one of the first to suspect that Rachael didn't kill herself, and once this suspicion is confirmed she becomes determined to catch the killer and make them pay.
My God, What Have I Done?: Has a moment of this when Brooke gets covered in Jake's gore and Audrey decides she should have said something about Jake being dead earlier or else this might not have happened. She also feels terrible after Gustavo gets beaten up because of her exposing his murder fan art.
Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Downplayed, as she blames herself for drawing Piper to Lakewood to film a documentary about Brandon James just to spite Emma. But really, what Piper and Kieran did they were probably going to do regardless, so it can hardly be said to really be her fault. She probably could have saved everyone a lot of trouble by coming clean and not trying to hide her involvement, but given Lakewood PD's competency level as displayed throughout the series, she had entirely sympathetic reasons to think they wouldn't believe her. By the time there is actually a cop in town (Sheriff Acosta) who actually might believe her, Ghostface had stacked the evidence too strongly against her.
Not So Stoic:
- The usually snarky Audrey breaks out crying when she learns that Rachael has killed herself.
- And again when Emma and Noah discover video footage of Audrey going ballistic the night of Nina's murder, ranting about taking revenge and "destroying" Nina.
Odd Friendship: There's real affection between Audrey and Brooke, seeing as how they've bonded over the incidents.
Red Herring: She is a human version of this throughout the whole 2 seasons.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Noah's Red.
Rejected Apology: Attempts to apologize to Gustavo after the beatdown he gets when she revealed his gruesome artworks of the Lakewood 6, even offering to pay to replace or repair his tablet which was damaged during the attack. Gustavo's response?
Gustavo: Stay the Hell away from me, or I'll destroy something you love.
The Reveal: The end of the tenth episode suggests she has something to do with Ghostface's murder spree, as she is seen with numerous letters from Piper, which she suspiciously proceeds to burn.
Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Intially, she started off as a cold and reserved goth chick who was considered an outcast and is shown to have a snarky attitude; As the series progresses, she slowly sheds her quiet loner personailty and becomes one of the more popular kids in high school and begins to open up to people.
Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Rachael's Girly Girl, which is is mostly evident when the video goes viral in the pilot. Audrey seems outwardly unbothered by it, refusing to let others see how their teasing affects her, while Rachael doesn't even want to leave the house for fear of being harassed. Rachael lampshades this.
Took a Level in Jerkass: According to Noah, she is being more of a brute and making less sense through season 2. This is understandable, as she is being hunted down by Piper's accomplice.
Villain Protagonist: Subverted in Season 2. At first, it seems that she helped Piper carry out her murder spree last year, and is now covering up her involvement and is being targeted as a result. She maintains that all she did was bring Piper to Lakewood in order to make a documentary, but there are many reasons not to believe her. Following The Reveal, however, it turns out that she was Good All Along.
Waif-Fu: She can flip men twice her size over her head if she gets the drop on them.

Noah

Noah Foster

Played By: John Karna

"Let me tell you. Everyone has secrets. Everyone tells lies. Everyone is fair game."

A prodigy and a boy genius who worships at the altar of all things nerd. When Noah's not working his after school job at the local comic shop, or hacking the servers at CERN just for sh*ts and giggles, he’s obsessing over video games, anime, and above all else, horror movies. But he doesn’t stop there, Noah has been fascinated with true-crime documentaries and serial killer lore ever since he was a kid, giving him insight and perspective on the events happening in Lakewood… maybe even a little too much?

Beta Couple: With Riley from the first episode. Her murder in Episode 3 quite tragically puts an end to this.
Break the Cutie: After Zoe's death towards the end of season 2, Noah spends his time in the hospital unmotivated and depressed, and briefly considers ending his podcast
Buffy Speak: When the gang is being stalked by the killer in Episode 7, Noah hastily assembles what he refers to as a 'knife stick' to defend himself. Brooke dryly points out that it's just a spear.
Cartwright Curse: Two girlfriends. Both murdered by the killer as the relationships began to truly take off.
Cowardly Lion: He's pretty jumpy and easily scared, but he is genuinely brave and heroic when it counts. This is shown especially well during 2x10. Knowing Ghostface is nearby and targeting him, he still continues to risk his life and play along in hopes of saving Zoe's. Turns out she was Dead All Along and Noah nearly dies because of it.
Deadpan Snarker: Quite a lot.
Expy: Of Randy Meeks.
Foreshadowing: Sarcastically jokes that Eli Hudson (who Emma, Audrey, and he believed was Ghostface) might prove to be misunderstood and Good All Along. He was right.
Genre Savvy: As befitting a Meta Guy. In the season finale, he explicitly defies three classic tropes that lead one to get killed in horror movies:
Noah: "In observation of this loaded moment, I am against splitting up, I am not three days from retirement, and I will not be right back."
- Genre Blind: Sometimes comes across as this, such as getting certain comic book and horror trivia wrong, and in a season 2 episode where he goes to a secluded, empty, creepy amusement park at night all by himself with a killer on the loose, which he eventually realizes how much it fits this trope.
Hollywood Hacking: Employs this to gain access to Nina's laptop. It backfires when he accidentally releases footage of Emma's first time with Will to the student body.
I'm Your Biggest Fan: To Piper Shaw. She appreciates the fanboying.
Instant Sedation: Gets chloroformed in "Jeepers Creepers". It takes only a few seconds for the drug to take effect.
It's Personal: Noah's desire to unmask the killer comes from his grief over Riley's death.
Keet: Referred to as such by Audrey.
Lovable Coward: As much as he loves horror movies, he confides in Emma that being in one is abjectly terrifying. Still, he tags along on the kids' various detective expeditions with little complaint.
Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Was Noah hallucinating Zoe while he was slowing dying when he got buried alive? Or was he actually talking to her spirit, since its revealed that Ghostface killed her before Noah was attacked during a cruel Bait-and-Switch plan.
Meta Guy: Very well versed in the horror genre. He drops pop culture references every other line, it seems.
Motor Mouth: When he gets on a spiel about pop culture, of course. At one point Audrey bemoans that he really needs an off switch.
Mr. Exposition: Provides the Brandon James backstory in the pilot, at Kieran's request.
Nightmare Fetishist: Outright admits that he fanboys over Brandon James the way other guys worship the Dallas Cowboys.
Odd Couple: A platonic version, with Audrey. Until Season 2's fourth episode "Happy Birthday to Me" where they do under an LSD drug. Even they are both troubled by it the day later.
Plucky Comic Relief: The closest this show has to some. He's not nonstop comedy, but he does have his fair share of one-liners and can be fairly amusing.
Proud to Be a Geek: Very much this.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Audrey's Blue.
The Smart Guy: Smart enough to score an internship with Elon Musk, at any rate. He tells Riley he designed a stargazing app for a midterm project.
What the Hell, Hero?: Calls Audrey out on accidentally getting Gustavo beaten up by the other students when she displays his murder fan art of his classmates to the other students for all to see. She clearly feels terrible.
Xtreme Kool Letterz: Purposefully misspells "douche" when he graffitis Jake's car, presumably so Jake won't trace the crime back to him. Audrey is impressed, though the plan didn't quite work out.

Kieran

Kieran Wilcox

Played By: Amadeus Serafini

"Sheriff, I'm your son. Not your 21 Jump Street snitch."

A mysterious charismatic loner. He’s the new guy in town, but he has no interest in joining the popular group, despite the fact that he and Emma have an instant chemistry.

Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Revealed in the Season 2 finale as Piper's accomplice/lover.
Bound and Gagged: Happens to Kieran during the carnival in "Village Of The Damned".^note
Delinquents: He casually tells Emma that he's been in jail before. When she presses him for information, he says he'll tell her later.
Expy: Of Cotton Weary to some extent, as both are out of townies with a special connection with the protagonist. With his case, its more of a crush on Emma than Cotton having dated Sidney's mother.
- Also of Billy Loomis being the suspicious bad boy boyfriend of the protagonist. He also turns out to be one of the killers manipulating the hero.
Genre Savvy: To a lesser extent than Noah, but he does seem to like horror movies, participating in the English class discussion in the pilot.
I Never Said It Was Poison: He gives himself away as the second Ghostface when he repeats the caller's line about Emma "feeling safe again", which she hadn't told him about.
It's All My Fault: Reveals in episode 8 of Season 2 that he caused the car accident that killed his mother and step-dad, diverting his step-dad's concentration from the road by arguing with him.
Love Triangle:
- Is rapidly finding himself as the hypotenuse between Emma and Will. He doesn't like Will very much, and seems to think Emma is too good for him.
- He and Emma make it official in Episode 5.
- In Season 2, it seems a new triangle is forming between Emma, Kieran, and Kieran's cousin Eli.
Mr. Fanservice: The fanbase seems to agree that he is the most attractive of the main male cast. He even gets two episodes where he has prominent shirtless scenes.
Not So Stoic: Kieran finding out that his father was murdered in the Season 1 finale is enough to completely shatter his tough guy exterior.
The Quiet One: Compared to the rest of the male characters, at least. He's quiet and reserved, and prefers to be on his own, as shown when Brooke invites him to her party.
The Reveal: After the revelation of being Piper's accomplice in Season 2, anything in the previous two seasons becomes tinged with foreshadowing and Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
Trauma Conga Line: Before season 1 where he lost his biological father, he also lost his mom and stepdad in a car accident a few weeks before the start of the series.
Troubled, but Cute: Despite his checkered past and troubled home life, Kieran becomes a listening ear to Emma and has a grounded attitude in general. That is, until he's revealed to be Piper's accomplice in Season 2.

Brooke

Brooke Maddox

Played By: Carlson Young

Nina’s blunt BFF and heir apparent to her pink Prada throne. Always ready with biting commentary, Brooke appears to be a shallow snob but unlike Nina, Brooke is not a mean girl and is fiercely loyal to her friends… and for good reason. They’re effectively the only family she’s got. Her father, Quinn Maddox is Lakewood’s mayor and classic emotional black hole, while her jet-setting mom is perennially MIA.

A Friend in Need: In season 1, Brooke was the spoiled brat and the wild party girl who focused her life on being popular and hooking up with her teacher and wasn't much of a good friend. However, as the series progresses, Brooke has matured and becomes the voice of reason in her friends' lives.
Action Girl: After Jake's death, she slowly develops a tough and fearless side.
Berserk Button: Tortured Branson with a pair of scissors to make him confess of killing Jake and lying about his alibi.
Beware of the Nice Ones: Though Brooke eventually becomes a loyal friend, she can be ruthless and vindictive if you mess with her or the people that she cares about.
Bound and Gagged: Willingly ties herself up in the hotel, assuming she's about to have kinky sex with Mr. Branson. This was a ploy by Ghostface to have her helpless and immobile when he killed her, but she's spared in favor of Riley.
Blood-Splattered Innocents: In Season 2, episode 4, the new killer arranges for Jake's mangled body to drop right in front of her, drenching her in his blood.
Break the Cutie: She deals with more emotional issues, heartache, and being terrorized by the killer the most.
Breakout Character : At first, Brooke came off as a shallow snob who cared little about her friends and more about partying, maintaining her popularity, and her secret affair with her former teacher, Mr.Brandon. However, as the series progresses, Brooke is shown to be a troubled, insecure girl who often seeks attention and desires to be loved, and has received some of the strongest Character Development in the whole show.
Broken Bird: Brooke has lost most of her friends, including her boyfriend, and loved ones as well as been tormented by the killer physically and emotionally.
Brutal Honesty: Although she is not as outspoken as Noah or Audrey, she will speak her mind when its necessary.
Damsel in Distress: Aside from Emma, she is targeted and tormented the most out of all the characters.
Comic Relief: She is the snarky, truth-telling member of the Lakewood Six.
Deadpan Snarker: Not as much as Audrey or Noah, but it's there.
Defrosting Ice Queen: After Riley's murder, and the resulting online poll from her classmates who want to see her dead, Brooke shuts down and realizes she may just be a little too self-absorbed. She even allows herself to be comforted by Jake, who she usually treats with contempt. While still rude and snarky, she has become more friendly and a much nicer person than she was in Season 1.
Despair Event Horizon: The murders of Riley and Will, her mother being sent to Rehab, her father disposing of a drug dealer that overdosed in their home to cover his wife's secret, and Jake hacking her webcam to spy on her in Season 1 seemed to send her into this, temporarily causing her to fall back on her old ways.
- In Season 2, Jake's murder, which she finds out about when his body is dumped right in front of her in "Happy Birthday To Me" sends her over the edge once again.
Dude Magnet: While she doesn't get a whole of lot of male attention, she had sexual relations with Mr. Branson and slowly develop feelings for her childhood friend Jake before the two men both got murdered by the killer in season 2. She is currently in a relationship with the troubled and dark artist Starvo.
Dumb Blonde: Possibly, though her ignorance in English class might just be Obfuscating Stupidity to score some 'private sessions' with Mr. Branson.
Expy: Of both Gale Weathers and Tatum Riley. Both Gale and Brooke are initially presented as selfish and slowly become a Jerk with a Heart of Gold while Tatum and Brooke are both the feisty and loyal blonde best friend of the protagonist who double as the Ms. Fanservice of the group.
Femme Fatale: Uses her sexuality and charm to get what she wants.
Final Girl: Aside from Emma and Audrey, she survived Season 1, 2, and the Halloween Specials.
The Fashionista: To obsessive levels, to the point where it's something like her coping mechanism. After Riley's death, Brooke agonizes over what kind of nail polish she ought to wear to the funeral. This is in all sincerity, as it's part of her coping process to Riley's death, stating after choosing a specific nail polish that Riley would approve.
Genki Girl: Since Season 1, she been the wild party girl in Lakewood but as the series progresses, she becomes more mature and sensible while still retaining her fun- loving, carefree attitude.
Girly Girl: Very feminine in her fashion sense and sense of style.
Ice Queen: Used to be a cold, self-absorbed, slightly snobby Alpha Bitch and Rich Bitch.
I Just Want to Be Loved: In Season 1, she had a desperate need for love, male attention, and to be protected.
It's All My Fault: Blames herself for leaving Riley behind to answer Branson's booty call, allowing her to go off to her death. Emma, who is herself suffering from a case of this, tells Brooke there was nothing she could have done.
Jerkass Realization: When she realizes that, by leaving Riley at the police station she inadvertently caused her death, Brooke has a breakdown, calling herself out on being self-absorbed and shallow.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Develops into this.
Locked in a Freezer: She climbs into it to hide in the Season 1 finale, but the killer plugs it in and leaves her to freeze to death. She makes it out alive, however.
Lovable Alpha Bitch : Despite her shallow mindedness and promiscuity, Brooke is a genuinely nice and caring person at heart.
Ms. Fanservice: Out of the main female characters, she's portrayed as the most outwardly sexy. The promos even refer to her character type as "the sex object" in a slasher story.
No Sympathy:
- Was supposedly closer to Nina than any of the other teens, yet her way of mourning is to throw a kegger... ahem... memorial service and then go on as if nothing has happened.
- Still, it seems she does actually care about Emma as a friend, though the degree to which she is able to express this is debatable.
- Fully averted starting in Episode 4, which shows that she is genuinely affected by Riley's murder.
Nothing After Death: Brooke tells the town that this is what she experienced when she almost died as she tears the townsfolk a new one during the carnival.
Odd Friendship: Despite their differences, Brooke and Audrey never had real issue with each other and since the season 1 finale, they've developed a mutual understanding for another and have become best friends along with Emma.
Parental Abandonment:
- In Season 1, Brooke's father is rarely around due to his mayoral duties, and only knows his daughter on a superficial level, while her mother is away on a never ending stream of meditation retreats, giving Brooke free reign to throw lavish parties at their house and engage in sex games with her English teacher. "Aftermath" explores a darker side to this, showing that Brooke comes to resent having parents that, frankly, have other things to do. "Exposed" takes this even further, as Brooke learns her father has been lying to her and may even be responsible for killing her mother. However, she later finds out that her mom was alive.
- In Season 2, while her mom is still nowhere to be seen, there was a step up in Mr. Maddox and his daughter's relationship, with the two of them still at odds with each other. Especially since Brooke was still seeing Jake Fitzgerald, at the start of season 2. However, with his murder by the new Ghostface killer, it strains the father and daughter relationship even further, with Brooke really distancing herself from her father. It is only until him showing his love for her on a press conference to convince her to come back home so they could start anew. "Heavenly Creatures" shatters that, when the new Ghostface killer kills her father.
Really Gets Around: Downplayed. Unlike most blondes in the slasher trope, Brooke is not as promiscuous and has only been involved with three male main characters so far.
Saying Too Much: In the pilot, she lets herself slip that Will and Nina had a one night stand while he and Emma were on a break. Whether of not this was accident however...
Sex for Solace: The revelation that her mother is indeed alive, coupled with her decision to finally cut ties with her father, is what ends up pushing her back into Branson's arms.
Shout-Out: The entire garage scene in the pilot is clearly meant to reference Tatum's death in the original movie. Brilliantly Subverted, in that she makes it out unscathed.
Slashers Prefer Blondes: Despite this, she survives every vicious attack by the killer.
Smarter Than You Look: Pretends to be a ditz, but she actually intelligent and is smart enough to avoid getting herself killed while being being targeted by the killer.
Teacher/Student Romance: Is in a relationship with the English teacher, Mr. Branson. He repeatedly tries to back out, but Brooke clearly isn't willing to give up.
Tempting Fate: Averted. When 'Branson' texts her to meet him at the hotel, she tells Emma that she'll be right back, something the original film warns you never to do. Though it seems she might be Ghostface's next victim, Emma begs Ghostface to spare Brooke, causing Riley to be killed instead.
The Determinator: Gets cornered by the Season 1 killer three times, but survives every encounter.
- And in the Season 2 finale, she gets stabbed by the killer, but makes a quick recovery.
"The Reason You Suck" Speech / Take That!: To the town when they're just celebrating with a carnival after so many deaths.
Took a Level in Badass:
- She's the first character in the series to encounter Ghostface and get away, though it can be argued that he was just toying with her in the bowling alley.
- Episode 8 shows that she can repeat that performance, getting away from Ghostface with just a cut on the arm, though it is heavily suggested Ghostface wanted her to get away so as to make Branson look guilty of attempted murder.
- Goes even more so during season 2 after Jake's murder, shown when she easily manipulates Seth and Kristin, and then binds and threatens the former for information until she's satisfied with his answers.
Took a Level in Kindness: Originally appearing to be a blunt, shallow-minded and uncaring young woman, she eventually starts to mellow out. She even becomes attached enough to Jake, even after he admits his part in blackmailing her dad, that she breaks down when she finds him bleeding out in Episode 7, and even accompanies him to the hospital.
Troubled, but Cute: As beautiful and free-spirited as she is, Brooke has some insecurities and out of all of the main characters, she has been through emotional, physical, and mental trauma the most by the Lakewood Slasher.
Undying Loyalty: Her loyalty to Emma is admirable. She is the only one willing to tell her about The Bet that started her relationship with Will, and unflinchingly accompanies Emma to search for Will at the abandoned bowling alley.
- She also becomes fiercely loyal to Audrey, still believing in her friend's innocence and defending her to Stavo even after she sees the video of Audrey tampering with Jake's body.

Will

Will Belmont

Played By: Conner Weil

Emma's boyfriend, and a member of the school's basketball team. Beneath his goofy grin and cheesy jokes, however, is an over-pressured, hot-headed person who may or may not have violent tendencies.

The Atoner: After Emma breaks up with him in Episode 5, Will becomes obsessed with fixing things between them, going so far as to drop the blackmail operation, confess to the Mayor, and subsequently lose his last chance of going to college.
Blackmail: Was part of a sex tape operation with Jake, Nina and Tyler. They sold tapes to older town officials and blackmailed them as an added bonus.
Bound and Gagged: Twice in Episode 7, first when Ghostface is holding him hostage and again when he's attacked to the Rube Goldberg Device that kills him.
Broken Ace: Is an outwardly good-humored, classically attractive Big Man on Campus, but it's all just a facade covering up Parental Issues, a hair-trigger temper, and a downright malicious opportunist.
Crazy Jealous Guy: Follows Emma around, constantly seeks confirmation that she likes him, and gets a manic look in his eye whenever she's near Kieran. Still, Emma seems mostly cool with this.
Cruel and Unusual Death: He gets stabbed, held hostage, rescued, and is recovering when he gets kidnapped again, tied up right in front of working and highly dangerous farming equipment, when Emma arrives, rushes to him and hits a tripwire that triggers the equipment, which tears him to shreds.
Death Trap: He's notably the one character who gets put into one of these. It gets him killed when Emma rushes to try to save him and ends up hitting a tripwire in the process.
Distressed Dude:
- Ghostface stabs him non-fatally and kidnaps him in Episode 6, presumably to get Emma to play another game with him.
- He is rescued in the following Episode, but is ironically killed at his house the very next day.
Heroic Sacrifice: To an extent. Will saves Piper from Ghostface and takes the knife-blow for her, which ultimately sets in motion events leading to his death.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As mentioned above, he's quite a jerk who took Emma's virginity to win a bet, but he feels bad for Riley's death and after reluctantly going along with Jake's plan to blackmail Brooke's father, Quinn, for a very high sum of money, Will backs off from the extortion and cuts ties with Jake after Jake gets violent and breaks Quinn's nose despite promising Will that Quinn wouldn't be hurt.
Love Triangle: With Emma and Kieran, who he resents deeply, particularly when Emma confesses that they kissed at Brooke's party.
Must Make Amends: In Episode 6, he returns the money and the last copy of the video to the Mayor. In return for this show of generosity he is promptly kidnapped by Ghostface.
My God, What Have I Done?: He realizes just how in over his head he is when Jake breaks the Mayor's nose at the money dropoff.
Odd Friendship: Forms a sort of alliance with Piper Shaw to help ease his conscience after Emma breaks up with him. He allows her to report on his blackmail story, at the same time returning the dirty money to the Mayor to vindicate himself.
Redemption Equals Death: He starts off as an opportunistic jerk, but starts making strides to get better, from stopping his involvement with the blackmail scheme, to holding a door shut while injured to prevent the killer from getting in so he can buy time for Brooke and Noah to flee to safety, tackling the killer to prevent him from killing Emma (he's still badly injured), to trying to repair his relationship with Emma by being honest and making amends for his mistakes. He then gets brutally murdered in episode 7 right when things seem to be going okay for him again.
Small Town Boredom:
- Sees being able to go to Duke as his chance to get away from small town hell.
- He also happens to be just outside Emma's place of employment just after she closes up for the night. Maybe coincidence, maybe not.
Straight Man and Wise Guy: The Straight Man to Jake's Wise Guy.
Tranquil Fury: After Brooke exposes his relationship with Nina, Will follows her into the garage and threatens her, in a raspy whisper no less, saying that if she ever tries to ruin things for him and Emma again, he will come after her. Brooke seems to be intimidated.
"Well Done, Son" Guy: He mentions that his dad pushes him to excel on the basketball team, though whether this has any bearing on the story has yet to be seen.

Sheriff Hudson

The local sheriff, Kieran's biological father, and Maggie Duval's boyfriend. He's a seasoned officer of the law who, for all his skill with small-town police work, finds himself quite out of his element when bodies start turning up.

By-the-Book Cop: Particularly contrasted with the Mayor, who simply wants the murderer caught before he gets more bad press. Sheriff Hudson is less ready to believe that Tyler O'Neill is responsible, and doesn't mind taking extra time in his investigation to prove or disprove that.
Drugs Are Bad: According to his son, Hudson was a pill popper and that is one of the reasons why they moved to Lakewood. Of course, since Kieran was the second killer, he isn't entirely reliable.
Embarrassing Nickname: Lorraine calls him "Hud". He meekly tries to get her to stop, but she ignores him.
Flat Character: He's the town sheriff, dates Emma's mother, and has strained connection with his son. That's about it.
Gutted Like a Fish: How he ultimately goes out.
Kick the Dog: When Audrey confronts him on the investigation into Rachael's death, he snidely tells Emma that she ought to help Audrey find a grief counselor. Yeah, he'd just had a harrowing press conference but still. Not cool.
Old Flame: To Lorraine.
Police Are Useless: Is not entirely exempt from this, considering the hugely botched attempt to catch Tyler O'Neill ended with an innocent being killed on the roof of the police station. Then there is also his not using the police force as he should have and going to check a lead all by himself, which results in his own death.
Reasonable Authority Figure:
- He's quite reasonable, and unlike many other cops in this genre, he seems to have some idea of what he's doing, right up with being willing to ask for help from Noah.
- Later Subverted as the situation grows more serious and he becomes less and less willing to deal with the kids' investigations.
Sacrificial Lion: Offed in the season finale to make Maggie aka "Daisy" suffer.
The Sheriff: Well, duh.
You Meddling Kids: A non-villainous example. He sees the Kid Detective exploits of Emma and her friends as only interfering with his investigation. When the kids discover the killer's lair in Lakewood General he tells them he'd already had it searched and the kids have ruined any evidence they might have discovered.

Maggie

Dr. Maggie Duvall (formerly Daisy Anderson)

"I know I never needed to see that mask again."

The town coroner and Emma's mother. In her high school years she was the unfortunate object of affection for Brandon James. When he finally approached her at a Halloween dance, Maggie panicked, inadvertently triggering the killing spree. She never told her daughter about her connection to the tragedy, and is more than a little unsettled when people start getting killed again.

Cannot Spit It Out: Regrettably one of her defining traits. She only reveals key pieces of her history with Brandon James when Emma asks, even withholding the information about the child they had together until Emma confronts her with irrefutable evidence.
Childhood Friend Romance: One-sided on the part of Brandon James. They were very close before high school, and the murders were a result of James telling her she could do better than Kevin Duvall.
The Coroner: A Rare Female Example.
Emotions vs. Stoicism: The emotions to Lorraine Brock's stoicism.
Final Girl: Of the Brandon James murders, though she doesn't make this fact widely known.
Floral Theme Naming: Her friends used to call her 'Daisy'. She doesn't go by this name since the Brandon James murders, and the connection is lost on contemporary Lakewood residents, even Emma.
Good Parents: Whatever else she might be, she is definitely this compared to some of the other parental figures on this show, and in the slasher genre as a whole. She's always there to support Emma, gives her daughter the benefit of the doubt in every situation, and treats her like an adult with the capacity to make her own decisions.
Outliving One's Offspring: Her eldest daughter Piper is killed by her younger daughter Emma in self-defense in the first season finale.
Parental Substitute: In Season 2, to Brooke (whose own mother is never around) when she's in shock after Jake's mangled body is dumped right in front of her.
Reasonable Authority Figure: She doesn't judge Emma when she confesses her complicity in the sex tape and her greatest priority is her daughter's safety, of course, whether this makes her an example of Good Parents or Hands-Off Parenting is up for debate.
Second Love: Emma encourages Maggie to try for this in her relationship with Clark, apparently the first man Maggie has dated in many years.

Zoe

An overachieving student at George Washington High School. Smart, driven, and benevolent, Zoe appears to be friendly with all of the main characters. But despite her kind exterior, many promotions for her describe her as actively trying to hide a dark secret.

Birds of a Feather: With Noah, both being participating highly in Psychology class.
Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: How she comes across to a lot of viewers, like when she flipped out at Noah for kissing Audrey (despite the fact she did too) or when she snapped at the survivor of a mass killing spree for missing a study session. Despite the show's attempts to portray her as a Nice Girl, viewers aren't buying it.
- The speculation deepens as she's shown emailing an audio file to an unknown person which contains the confession of Audrey to Noah.
Black and Nerdy: Black and an over achiever in academics.
Cute Bookworm: Portrayed as friendly and cute, and rivals Noah's smarts with her own.
Daddy's Girl:
Zoe: "So then, your dad will be your escort (for the Lady of the Lake pageant)?"
Brooke: "Um, no. Who has their dad as their escort."
Zoe: "Uh, I do."
Driven to Suicide: Strongly implied to have occurred in the past due to feelings of depression and loneliness.
Drowning Pit: In a sense. It's a coffin rather than an actual film, but otherwise it functions the same way. Zoe doesn't survive it.
Expy: Of Hallie from Scream 2. Both are the new Token Black Friend to the Final Girl, both are cute bookworms with a thing for psychology, and both are love interests to movie buffs.
Genre Savvy: Not as much as Noah, but shows signs of this, she also likes to talk with him about it, indicating that, while she doesn't understand as much about terror movies as him, she recognizes how useful is to have someone that does.
Nice Girl: She likes to help people out.
Red Herring: An interesting example. Unlike most red herrings, Zoe isn't played up as mysterious or suspicious in the least. In fact, the reason she's so effective as one is the exact opposite reason. Her possible involvement in the murders is downplayed at every moment with convenient excuses pointing towards her probable innocence, much like Piper in Season 1.
Remember the New Guy?: Already friendly with Emma, and acquainted with Noah and Brooke by the start of Season 2
- She was mentioned briefly by Riley in the first episode of Season 1.
Sex Signals Death: Her and Noah becomes targets for Ghostface after they had sex, with this trope explicitly stated to be the reason. Audrey and Emma manage to save Noah, but Zoe doesn't make it.

Stavo

Gustavo 'Stavo' Acosta

The son of Sheriff Miguel Acosta and new student at George Washington High School. He expresses a particular interest in the survivors of Season 1's massacre. He also expresses a big interest in all things horror, particularly comic books.

Accidental Murder: Before returning back to Lakewood, Gustavo accidentally shot and killed his best friend while looking at his father's gun.
Dreaming of Things to Come: Stavo has a flair of drawing up scenes that already happened, with frightening detail. It turns out that one day, he looked at his dad's files and it scarred him, thus allowing him to draw things in detail.
Friendly Rival: Seems to be this towards fellow horror buff Noah.
Genre Blind: He does not seem to realize or care how suspicious he looks like drawing his classmates being brutally murdered and/or mutilated. Particularly, he keeps doing this no matter what, so publicly drawing these while in a school lockdown after Jake's body has been thrown in the school stage, is by far a terrible idea and no wonder it leads to a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
- Genre Savvy: Later in season 2, when the town has a festival, he points out how idiotic this is when there is a killer on the loose.
Hair-Trigger Temper: Same as Jake. Especially present during the Halloween special.
Lack of Empathy: Outright states in the Halloween special that he has no problem with exploiting the grisly deaths of several people if it means he can make a good comic book.
Nice Guy: He's actually pretty chill for the most part.
Nightmare Fetishist: Likes to draw lurid, detailed artwork of the Lakewood Six's mutilated bodies. Audrey (correctly) points this out as incredibly creepy and suspicious.
No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Receives one after Audrey reveals his morbid drawings of the Lakewood 6 to the entire student body during the Lockdown.
Redherring: One of the most obvious examples: From his Death Glare, to his cold behavior, to his hobby of drawing violent art of the people in town dying horrible deaths. And his obvious obsession with the survivors of Season 1. His dad, Sheriff Miguel, even suspects him during the Season. But the last 3 episodes reveal that his creepy personality is because of a tragic death he witnessed when he was younger. The violent art is actually part of a graphic novel, which will star Noah as the hero. And his stoic behavior cracks during the Season 2 finale when he discovers Brooke was attacked and almost killed. He responds showing genuine emotion for the first time by crying. Both Noah and his Father realize he's innocent.

Supporting Characters

Riley

Riley Marra

Played By: Brianne Tju

The third member of Emma's Girl Posse, and easily the most pleasant and agreeable of the clique. Socially awkward and somewhat shy, Riley is eager to fit in with the others, though she sometimes seems just a bit out of her league.

Audience Surrogate: In her Meta discussions with Noah, she occasionally asks questions that the viewers may be wondering themselves.
Beta Couple: From the first episode, she and Noah were this. Her death in Episode 3 puts a stop to that, however.
Black Dude Dies First: She's the only Asian character in the main cast and she doesn't make it past Episode 3, being the first of the main cast of characters that is killed.
Everything Is Racist: Played for Laughs in Episode 2 when Riley sneaks up on Noah and he compares her to a ninja. Riley dryly calls him a racist, though then reveals she's just kidding.
Morality Pet: She's this to Brooke, being the one person who keeps her grounded and also keeps her from going too far in her bitchiness. It's even more apparent after her murder.
Nice Girl: Seems to be the only member of Emma's clique with absolutely nothing to hide. This could very well be why she's the first of the clique to die. Episode 4 also shows that out of all the murders, it's Riley's that has most affected the biggest number of people.
Obfuscating Stupidity: When Noah mentions his internship with Elon Musk, Riley gushes that she loves perfume. She laughs it off immediately afterward and admits she knows exactly what he's talking about.
Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: With Noah, as she encourages him to get out more and have fun. Interestingly, they both seem to think they're out of each other's league.
Token Minority: Brianne Tju is Chinese and Indonesian.
Too Good for This Sinful Earth: The first of the more central characters to die, and easily the most innocent out of Emma's friends. Ghostface lampshades this when he gives Emma the Sadistic Choice, calling Riley the good girl and Brooke the bad.
Town Girls: The Neither to Emma's Butch and Brooke's Femme.
The Watson: Occassionally acts as this to Noah, allowing him to describe various horror movie tropes and how they apply to their current situation. Most clear at the end of the pilot when she actually asks Noah "how everything ends", meaning of course the Lakewood murder mystery.

Piper

Piper Shaw

Played By: Amelia Rose Blaire

A perky, peppy podcaster whose weekly crime segments are quite popular with the teens of Lakewood. Piper wastes no time zeroing in on the high school once Nina is killed, eager to do a full expose on the murder and the investigation, perhaps unaware of what she might be getting herself into.

Caught on Tape: When Jake publicly threatens Noah for vandalizing his car, Piper hangs in the back and films the scene on her phone, though whether to protect Noah or to further sensationalize her investigation is unclear.
Disappeared Dad: Reveals to Emma that her father was murdered and the crime was never solved because she feels that the police didn’t really care. Since her father is revealed to be Brandon James, it’s clear that Piper views him as an innocent victim.
Expy: Of Gale Weathers, being a podcaster, as the former was a reporter.
Intrepid Reporter: Piper Seems to be putting herself into a dangerous situation to get a lead but this turns out to be a cover for a darker secret.
Nice Girl: She is very nice to Emma and practically everyone, genuinely trying to help solve these grisly murders.
Must Have Caffeine: Her excuse for hanging around the Grindhouse when Emma assumes she wants to speak with her.
No Celebrities Were Harmed: Given that Piper is meant to be Gale Weathers in 2015, the creators decided to make her an expy of Sarah Koenig, whose true crime podcast Serial was popular around the show's release.
Odd Friendship: Forms a sort of alliance with Will to help ease his conscience after Emma breaks up with him.
Podcast: Her show, 'Autopsy of a Crime', is very popular.
Quick Nip: She carries a hip flask with her, surreptitiously offering some to Emma to calm her nerves.
The Reveal: The killer removing the mask in the tenth episode reveals them to be none other than Piper.
Second Episode Introduction: First appears in the second episode "Hello Emma".

Mr. Branson

Seth Branson

Played By: Bobby Campo

The English teacher at the high school the Lakewood kids attend. Young and good-looking, he has a fairly easy rapport with his student, though this might be because he lets them talk at length about pop culture and local gossip in class.

Abhorrent Admirer: He becomes one toward Brooke in Season 2, despite her father having placed a restraining order.
Allegory: Not Branson himself, but he has a tendency to gear all of his classes to be oddly inappropriate allegories for the things going on around his students in reality.
- They discuss the origins of the gothic horror genre on the day Nina Patterson is found dead.
- They discuss The Scarlet Letter right after the sex tape of Emma's first time has been leaked to the student body.
- They discuss The Crucible and McCarthyism at the height of the murder investigation, where some of his own students suspect him of being a serial murderer.
Ambiguous Situation: By the end of Season 1, we still don't know why he felt it necessary to skip town and change his name when his girlfriend was murdered. The real question being, did he kill her? Or did he realize he would be wrongly accused for her death and ran? The latter is possibly supported as of Season 2's "Jeepers Creepers" when Seth makes a brief mention to how the girl was suicidal.
Asshole Victim: At the point of his Humiliation Conga in S2 he has been shown to have slept with his students, acted suspiciously by leaving his original town and changing his name after his girlfriend was murdered, and generally acted extremely creepy by stalking Brooke. He doesn't seem to have many redeeming qualities at all, although to his credit, his final act in the show is a borderline Heroic Sacrifice.
Bound and Gagged: In Season 2's "Jeepers Creepers", Brooke lures him to a hotel room and ties him to the bed to interrogate him (believing he was Jake's killer). After getting some answers, Brooke completes the trope by gagging him. The killer takes advantage of this situation to torture and kidnap him.
Cool Teacher:
- Tries to be this, likening the Gothic genre with the T.V shows his students watch, but none of them seem to take him very seriously.
- Noah mentions he was the only teacher that still let him talk in class. But considering Branson doesn't have the best control of his students, this may be less him being cool and more him being ineffectual.
Cruel and Unusual Death: In mid season 2, his hand is chopped off by the killer, accidentally stabbed and appears to be dead, and yet Branson is still alive when the killer burns down the house his body was left.
Decoy Antagonist: Set up by Piper to look like the Killer
Expy: Roman from Scream 3. Though, it is later revealed this wasn't actually true.
Frame-Up: What seems to be the case in Episode 8 when he leaves Brooke for a few minutes to investigate an odd noise, leading to her be chased and nearly slashed by Ghostface, culminating in her running right into his arms just as the police, who already have evidence to convict him, burst into the room. Confirmed in the season finale, as a frame job by Piper, who aimed to use Branson as her patsy.
Humiliation Conga: Gets put through the wringer and then some in the space of two episodes in season 2. He is first lured into a trap by Brooke, who handcuffs him to a bed and scares the hell out of him by threatening him with scissors and even nicking his face with them. After she leaves him tied up, Ghostface shows up, violently cuts his right hand off and cauterizes the wound with an iron. He's then beat up and set up as a trap for Ms. Lang, and ends up stabbed in the stomach, dragged away to Ghostface's hideout, dumped into a bathtub with Eddie's decomposing corpse and ultimately is left in there to die after the house is set on fire.
Karma Houdini: He committed statutory rape, spied on his students through their computers cameras, ran away from the law and faked his identity when a student he had sex with allegedly killed herself. The most he gets is fired and a restraining order.
Kick the Dog: He's Noah's favorite teacher, largely because he allows his monologues. When Branson encounters Brooke and her friends after his firing in season two, Noah makes a sarcastic comment, to which Branson replies, "I never liked you, Foster." Noah actually looks hurt.
Meaningful Name: Subverted. When Emma suspects he is her brother through Brandon James, Noah theorizes that he picked the name Branson as Brandon + Son.
Teacher/Student Romance:
- Is in a relationship with Brooke. The exact reasons for their trysts aren't clear, but it's implied Brooke sleeps with him so he'll boost her grades. They do call their get togethers 'study sessions', after all.
- Noah and Audrey's investigations reveal that he had a relationship with an 18 year old student named Olivia Finley while teaching in New Hampshire.
Unwitting Pawn: Noah suggests he might be this when he discovers that Branson has access to his students' webcams from his laptop. Audrey, however, is more willing to believe he was in on Nina's schemes.

The last member of the main high school clique, Jake is on the basketball team and is Will's best friend. Loud, obnoxious, and totally lacking the ability to take things seriously, he is seen as somewhat annoying by the other kids, even his friends. Indeed, Nina's murder is just another joke to him, to the others' surprise.

Blackmail: Was part of a sex tape operation with Will, Nina and Tyler. They sold tapes to older town officials and blackmailed them as an added bonus.
Carpet-Rolled Corpse: In "Happy Birthday to Me", how his body was ultimately found. Rolled up in a school banner by the New Ghostface, and his body splats right on Brooke too.
Comedic Sociopathy:
- While some of the other characters genuinely feel bad about the people murdered (Riley and Emma) and others feel apathetic (Brooke, and Noah and Audrey about Nina's murder), Jake is the only character who is actually amused by the murders and makes jokes about them.
- There's also the fact that he breaks Mayor Maddox's nose in episode 5, despite promising Will that Maddox would not be hurt. When Will calls him out on this, Jake brushes it off with a smile, saying it was "badass".
Dude, Not Funny!: invoked Brooke and Riley chastise him for joking about Nina's murder.
Dude, Where's My Respect?: When Will calls him out for breaking Mayor Maddox's nose at the money drop-off, Jake defends his position and reminds Will that he only got back into the blackmail racket so Will could pay his college tuition. Will is having none of it, so Jake decides to get revenge by pinning the entire operation on Will.
Expy: Of Stu Macher, as far as being the obnoxious friend of the protagonist's boyfriend goes.
Greed: His defining trait. His family is rich and doesn't even need the blackmail money, but Jake becomes obsessed with it.
Gutted Like a Fish: The New Ghostface kills him by slicing his stomach open with a scythe.
Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The killer runs him through the abdomen in Episode 7. He survives, however, and is convalescing in a hospital by the episode's end.
Jerk Jock: While not nearly as bad as Will (at least early on), he still has a temper as evidenced when he publicly confronts Noah about vandalizing his car. However, he can be a ...
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his wisecracking and crude exterior, Jake shows shades of decency when he confesses to Brooke that he likes having her around to keep him grounded.
Odd Friendship: Is developing one with Brooke, who had previously looked at him with contempt. However, whether or not he actually cares about her or is just using her to make himself look innocent is up in the air.
Obfuscating Stupidity: Is nowhere near as much of a dumb jock as he appears, having downright Jerkass manipulative tendencies.
The Sociopath: He has little motive for wanting the blackmail money, he shows No Sympathy when his friends end up dead, and he is perfectly willing to lie and manipulate Brooke into trusting him but hating Will.
Took a Level in Jerkass: As the series moves along, he's showing himself to be an even worse person than Will, displaying a ruthlessly manipulative and violent side.
Pet the Dog: In the midst of plotting to blackmail town officials with candid sex footage, Jake takes the time to comfort a grieving Brooke and tell her he doesn't want her dead.
The Prankster: It was his idea to put the passed out Noah out on the lake, after all. After the fact, Audrey points out that this could very well have become a Deadly Prank had the gang not intervened. Jake brushes it off as nothing.
Sacrificial Lion: Killed in the Season 2 premiere to establish that not only is the new killer targeting last year's survivors, but that Anyone Can Die.
Spoiled Brat: Will calls him out on this in Episode 3, saying that Jake has a "rich daddy" who can clean up all his messes if their sex tape operation is discovered.

The mayor of Lakewood and Brooke's emotionally distant father. A classic politician, he likes to project an unshakable and professional veneer, but when the murders start to dredge up more unsavory elements of his history, he becomes entrenched in something a little worse than a media scandal.

Asshole Victim: Considering how sleazy he is as a politician and how neglectful he is as a father, it's hard to feel sorry for Quinn for being ensnared by the Blackmail scheme of Season 1. The fact that he was being blackmailed for buying teenage sex tapes doesn't help matters.
Blackmail: Was being blackmailed by Nina and Tyler for buying teen sex tapes from their Black Market operation. After Nina's death, Jake and Will continue to demand money for silence. This is made even worse when it's revealed that the video he's being blackmailed for is not a sex tape, it's a video of him moving a dead body from the trunk of his car, which Brooke heavily suspects is the body of her mother, to hide it somewhere.
Disposing of a Body: Nina and Tyler's incriminating tape reveals Quinn hauling a body bag from his trunk and dragging it off somewhere. Brooke, terrified, jumps to the conclusion that it's her mother. When Brooke finally confronts him about this, Maddox claims that the body was that of his wife's drug pusher who had O.D'ed in the guest room, and he was merely hiding the body to avoid a scandal. That went well.
Ephebophile: Watches sex-tapes involving teenagers, for which he is extorted by Will and Jake.
Heel Realization: Although he initially confronts Brooke about her drunken "The Reason You Suck" Speech to the town, when he realises that everything that's happened to her has been made so much worse by his neglect and focus on PR, he just hugs her and takes her home. He really does love his daughter.
Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Is fatally stabbed with a pitchfork by the killer in "Heavenly Creatures". While he is stabbed pretty deeply, it's only after he pulls the pitchfork out that he bleeds out.
Mayor Pain: Not entirely incompetent, but he only seems interested in protecting the town or finding the Killer when it might affect his personal reputation. His attempts to make the town carry on as normal have put people in huge danger e.g. the centenary carnival.
Parental Neglect: Between his job and his generally detached attitude he spends very little time with his daughter, deluding himself that she is a perfectly pleasant girl who gets along with everyone. When Brooke has a breakdown and confides that everyone hates her, Quinn is convinced it's all in her head, which only makes things worse for her.
Slave to PR: A possible interpretation of the extremes he went to cover up his wife's drug habits is that he only cares about his image in the press. Brooke seems to be of this opinion when the truth does come out, and heavily considers cutting ties with him once and for all.
Sleazy Politician: A textbook example. He sees the murders as nothing but a hindrance to the newly restored public image of Lakewood and browbeats Sheriff Hudson to catch Tyler O'Neill as fast as possible. In Season 2, he secretly hired Jake to burn down his abandoned field development so he could recover the property cheap, which lead to Jake's death, neglecting to report it to Sheriff Acosta just to preserve his public image, to Brooke's fury. He later hires Tina Hudson to finish the job for him.

Detective Brock

A state police detective called in by Mayor Maddox to take the murder investigation over from the increasingly ineffectual Sheriff Hudson. To add insult to injury, Lorraine is also Clark's ex partner and his girlfriend and wastes no time reminding him of this.

Deadpan Snarker: Among the 'adult' cast. Her reaction to Nina's laptop? Is a dry, "No wonder this girl's dead."
Emotions vs. Stoicism: The stoicism to Maggie's emotions.
Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Implied to have been something like this back in the day, popping pills with Clark and taking nothing very seriously.
Old Flame: To Clark.
Put on a Bus: Clark mentions in Episode 7 that she got taken off the case.
Reasonable Authority Figure:
- She knows Emma is very relevant to the case and quickly heads to her during the vigil, telling her they need to talk, but that it should be the next morning, knowing that tonight is important for Emma and the townsfolk in mourning for the murdered teens.
- She come across as quite aggressive when following up on evidence that points to Audrey as a possible suspect, but she's merely trying her hardest to capture a serial killer after 4 teens have been brutally murdered, and when Emma speaks on behalf of Audrey, by giving an alibi (this being a lie by Emma), Lorraine agrees to release Audrey.

A socially awkward girl at a nearby Catholic high school who also happens to be Audrey's girlfriend. She was treated just as badly (if not worse) once the makeout session went viral that she emotionally shuts down and finds Audrey to be her only friend.

Camera Fiend: Audrey mentions she made a stop motion LEGO film about the Zombie Apocalypse, so this seems to be the case.
The Cameo: In season 2, episode 4 Audrey hallucinates Rachel causing her to have a breakdown and apologize for her role in her death.
Gayngst: Is hit hard by this after the video comes out. It makes her apparent suicide seem much more believable.
Morality Pet: Episode 6 reveals that she kept Audrey from violently retaliating against Nina the night the video came out. Given that was the same night Nina died, this raises some questions for the police...
Never Suicide: It initially appears that Rachael hanged herself from her ceiling fan, but Maggie notes that she must have fallen farther and then had her body moved, proving that someone must have done her in.
Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Audrey's Tomboy, which is mostly evident when the video goes viral in the pilot. Audrey seems outwardly unbothered by it, refusing to let others see how their teasing affects her, while Rachael doesn't even want to leave the house for fear of being harassed. Rachael lampshades this.

The former queen bee of George Washington High School, Nina created and uploaded the video that outed Audrey and Rachael as lesbian lovers. Soon after, she is found murdered at her home.

Alpha Bitch: Every second in the first half of her scene is designed to get you to cheer for her impending demise.
Asshole Victim: As the series moves along, a few more things about her are revealed, and the more that is revealed, the more she fulfills this trope.
Blackmail: Was ringleader of a sex tape operation with Will, Jake and Tyler. They sold tapes to older town officials and blackmailed them as an added bonus. Will and Jake take up her mantel with her dead.
Dead Star Walking: In keeping with series tradition, the show's biggest star, Bella Thorne, dies in the first eight minutes. Thorne actually requested the role of Nina for this reason, noting that the big-name opening kill is an iconic element of Scream.
Ms. Fanservice: She spends half her screen time in a bikini.
Popularity Food Chain: Enforcing this at the school is her stated motivation for outing Audrey.
We Hardly Knew Ye: Eight minutes, and she's gone. However as the first season rolls along, it establishes that, she made a bet with Will on taking Emma's virginity and then taped it with a hidden camera, was the ringleader of a sex tape operation and episode 5 ends with Lorraine, the new investigator on the case, seeing something in her laptop that made her say it's no wonder someone wanted Nina dead, firmly laying the grounds on what kind of person she really was.

Nina's boyfriend and accomplice in her various sundry misadventures. He is killed offscreen in the first few minutes of the pilot, but his remains aren't found for some time yet, making him the primary suspect in Nina's murder, and those that follow it.

Blackmail: Was part of a sex tape operation with Nina, Will and Jake. They sold tapes to older town officials and blackmailed them as an added bonus. Will and Jake take up the operation after his death.
Hidden Depths:
- Riley believes he would never kill anybody, despite any of his other flaws. Whether or not she saw something in him that no one else did, or if it's just her innocent naivete is left unclear.
- He must also have been somewhat intelligent, being a student aid in Branson's class.
Jerk Jock: Having been part of Will and Jake's crew, this is very likely.
Off with His Head!: How he dies. His severed head surfaces in Nina's swimming pool, setting off her final hysterical panic. The heavily decomposed head is later found in Ghostface's Abandoned Hospital lair, finally proving Tyler's innocence.
The Scapegoat: Is held responsible for the murders, with a manhunt out for his arrest no less. The ruse is finally put to an end when his remains are found...in two separate places...in Episode 4.
We Hardly Knew Ye: Doesn't even get five minutes of screentime before being murdered. And unlike Nina, not much about his personality is revealed later on in the season.

Advertised Extra: He is credited as a recurring character but is pretty forgetable and only appears in 3 scenes before dying. On top of that, he serves absolutely no purpose in the story and is completely forgotten about.
All There in the Manual: His last name, Pfeiffer, is revealed in season 2 on a chart of victims.
Asshole Victim: In every scene he's in, he's being a jerk towards the main characters.
The Can Kicked Him: He gets his throat slashed while visiting the bathroom.
Dude, Not Funny!: He makes a joke about Will's leaked sex tape to Will. He's not amused.
Flat Character: Beyond being a Jerkass who enjoys teasing his classmates, he’s not given any character traits.
The Friend No One Likes: The fact that he's a jerk in all of his interactions doesn't make him very beloved.
Hate Sink: Every scene he’s in he’s just a jerk.
Jerkass: Mocks Will’s sex tape and tries to scare a traumatised Brooke with a ghostface mask.

Emma's absent father and the survivor of the Brandon James murders 20 years previously. Unable to cope with the trauma of the murders, Kevin walked out on his family when Emma was just a child. First appearing in season 1 episode 8 only as a hallucination to Emma during her Despair Event Horizon, Kevin makes his proper reappearance in Season 2 attempting to repair his relationship with his daughter.

The Alcoholic: He became one as a response to his trauma, which only worsened his demeanor.
Broken Bird: After being attacked by Brandon James, it affected him severely. He completely lost it when he discovered that Maggie once slept with Brandon, and then when he learned Maggie gave birth to Brandon's illegitimate child.
Disappeared Dad: When Kevin learned about Maggie's giving birth to Brandon's child (Piper Shaw), he abandoned the family right afterwards and has been absent from Emma's life for almost a decade.
Early-Bird Cameo: His first appearance in season 1 was only a hallucination of Emma's during her trauma after Will's death that lead Emma to remembering the time he walked out on the family.
Must Make Amends: Why he returns in season 2 to try and re-establish a relationship with his daughter.
Would Hit a Girl: He once battered Maggie because he was drunk and she protested his taking Emma somewhere in the car in his imbibed state.

Eli

Kieran's cousin and the son of Tina. Eli arrives in town with Tina when Kieran's house party causes trouble. Much like his mother, Eli's relationship with Kieran is noticeably tense. In his first appearance, Eli is shown to have a particular interest in Emma, being able to identify her without her telling him her name. While he appears to have good intentions, it's implied that he has ulterior motives and his appearance in Lakewood will unearth secrets from Kieran's past.

Abusive Parents: His father used to physically abuse him, according to Kieran.
Ambiguous Situation: At the carnival, Kieran warns Eli to stop telling stories about him to Emma to drive them apart. Eli responds with "Don't worry, Kieran. It's not like I told her the worst part!" With the later revelation that Kieran and his stepfather were arguing when they got into the car crash that killed him and Kieran's mother, this would logically seem like a case of Speak Ill of the Dead, explaining Kieran's response. However, when one takes into account that Kieran revealed in Season 1 that he went to jail without explaining what caused this, it could also mean that Eli was referring to the circumstances behind this arrest.
Cassandra Truth: Revealed to be this regarding Kieran as of the Season 2 finale.
Creepy Child: Implied to have been this, and is still relatively scary how young and creepy he looks compared to the rest of the cast.
Creepy Good: Despite all of his flaws it turns out that he was genuinely concerned about Emma, because he knew what his cousin Kieran was capable of. Everything he does during Season 2 becomes foreshadowing in his attempt to keep her safe from him.
Delinquents: He's been in trouble with police back in Atlanta. Turns out he has a restraining order against him for a girl whose room he broke into. Inverted as of the Season 2 finale, in which Eli reveals that Kieran framed him.
Fakingthe Dead When Kieran stabs him he pretends to be dead so he can call the police and report him. Kieran shots a few minutes later though anyway.
Heroic Sacrifice: Dies while trying to save Emma from Kieran, Piper's real accomplice. Although there's speculation that he may be Not Quite Dead....
The Friend Nobody Likes: Everybody has already realized how anti-social and creepy he is, so they prefer to keep their distance, it doesn't help that he deliberately lies to everybody about Kieran wanting a party so he could be in a high school party with everyone, even though Kieran just wanted something small with Emma.
Troubled, but Cute
Jerkass: He's a pretty big asshole, the more we see of him. He's deceitful, mean-spirited, unctuous, and seems to be trying to push a wedge between Emma and Kieran just because he himself seems to have a thing for her. Averted when it's revealed in the Season 2 finale that he was Good All Along and that Kieran had been manipulating everyone into thinking Eli was a psycho.
Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: What his character is, when it comes through at the end. He's stalking Emma because he knows Kieran has a psychotic streak during their time in Atlanta.
Parental Abandonment: His father walked out on him, and it's clear from the way he talks about it that he still harbors resentment towards him for that.
Redherring: Another example of one during Season 2. But it turns out he was Good All Along.

Sheriff Acosta

The new Sheriff of Lakewood and the father of Gustavo. He grew up in Lakewood and returns to his hometown to take the Sheriff position opened up following Clark Hudson's murder. Confident, outspoken, and competent, Miguel takes his job seriously and works hard to keep the peace in Lakewood.

Blackmail: A less villainous example. After discovering a gun in Kieran's locker during the lockdown, he tells him that if he doesn't co-operate and give him any information he has, he'll have him charged.
By-the-Book Cop: Just like his predecessor, Miguel takes his job seriously and genuinely wants to help keep the peace and the residents of Lakewood safe. And also like Clark, he has conflict with Quinn Maddox.
Deadpan Snarker: His first onscreen appearance highlights this aspect of his character.
Parents as People: He investigates Stavo when allegations and probable evidence start piling up against him, to Stavo's fury. As a whole, there's a great focus on his troubled relationship with his son.
Police Are Useless: A refreshing subversion, as he doesn't use evidence to fit preexisting theories, is willing to explore new possibilities, and always arrives at logical, substantiated (if sometimes incorrect) conclusions.
Reasonable Authority Figure: Miguel is tough, but intelligent and understanding. He does show signs of skepticism, though never dismisses something completely out of hand and is an all-round helpful presence.
Remember the New Guy?: Is already acquainted with Maggie and Kevin. It's revealed he was in high school with them during the original Brandon James murders.
Secret-Keeper: With Maggie. Turns out they knew Brandon James had actually survived his shooting by the police, helped him recover and when he left, they never spoke of it again.
The Sheriff: Of Lakewood, following Clark Hudson's untimely death.

A psychology teacher at George Washington High School. She's young, energetic, and does everything she can to make her class enjoyable and make real connections with her students. She also takes a special interest in Emma following the trauma she experienced during the first season and tries to act as a confidante for her.

Action Survivor: Attacked by Ghostface mid season 2, but survives thanks to impromptu timing by the school janitor.
Cool Teacher: A more self-aware example than Branson. She constantly cracks jokes, attempts to engage with her students, and is always offering assistance if any of them is having problems, effectively taking on a role as a Guidance Counselor as well.
I Lied: She gave the cops an alibi for Seth Branson when Brooke named him as the suspect in the murders, but Brooke uncovers she lied for him.
Karma Houdini: Throughout Season 2, she's secretly taped her conversations with her students, locked Emma up, and lied to the police about Emma, implicating her for the murders, and she gets away scot-free.
Reasonable Authority Figure: So far, it appears her only goal is to keep her students safe and show support to the emotionally on-edge Emma. Likely averted as of Psycho which reveals her secretly recording Emma's description of hr PTSD. Let the Right One In confirms that she's wrting some sort of book on the Lakewood Six with the help of Seth Branson.
The Reveal: Kristin knew Piper, having been foster sisters with her.

Tina

Tina Hudson

Played By: Karina Logue

The mother of Eli and the aunt of Kieran. Following her brother's death, Tina is tasked with taking care of her now orphaned nephew. Tina is less than a responsible caregiver and his relationship with her nephew is visibly strained. After Kieran's house activities get complaints from the neighbors, Tina considers having him move in with her. But after realizing that she could have a better life in Lakewood, she moves into her brother's house, allowing Kieran to stay.

Alcoholic Parent: Eli is used to it, though, and makes her cocktails for her whenever she wants.
Hypocrite: Calls Kieran out on being irresponsible after he throws a party with his friends, though he's right to point out she's not really the best example of responsible behavior.
Jerkass: Blatantly admits that she only took Kieran in because of the check she receives from doing so.
Parental Substitute: To Kieran now, if a rather emotionally distant example. Kieran even calls her a flake.
Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Heavily implied that Mayor Maddox paid her to finish the job he gave to Jake of burning down his field development - an action that the killer took advantage of by immolating Seth Branson and almost killed her son and Emma.

Haley

Haley Meyers

Played By: Mary Katherine Duhon

A student at George Washington High that made her first appearance in the opening scene of the Season 2 premiere. She, along with an unnamed friend, played a prank on Audrey, making her believe she was being chased by another killer. The prank goes bad when Audrey non-fatally stabs her friend in self-defense. This incident causes her to harbor ire against Audrey. "Dawn Of The Dead" reveals that she has a vendetta against Emma as well (and to a lesser extent Brooke, whom she makes a rude comment about).

Asshole Victim: It's pretty hard to feel sorry for her when she's killed toward the end of season 2 considering that all of her appearances had her bad-mouthing the main characters, both alive and dead.
Didn't Think This Through: She clearly failed to consider how pretending to be a serial killer to prank one of said serial killer's former victims could backfire.
Foreshadowing: Early in Season 2, Audrey gets a taunting text from Ghostface. She looks around and notice Haley texting on her cellphone at the same time while looking at her. Audrey threatens her, but finds out she was texting her boyfriend who she doesn't name. Audrey is not completely wrong, however, as it turns out Haley was also texting Ghostface.
Hate Sink: Haley mercilessly antagonizes the Lakewood Slasher survivors on a regular basis. Haley is introduced having her current beau prank Audrey by dressing as Ghostface; she later blames Emma for a new spate of deaths in Lakewood. Taking her antagonism further after Emma slaps her, Haley arranges for a Ghostface party with the seeming help of Ghostface themselves, who kills her for his own purposes.
Jerkass: Plays a cruel (and dangerous) prank on Audrey that results in one of her own friends being injured, tries to have her arrested for defending herself against the prank, taunts the emotionally fragile Emma by saying that everyone around her is at risk of dying (something she herself had already had fears about Season 1), makes a derogatory comment about Brooke after her boyfriend's dead body was dropped in front of her, and generally just complains about everything under the Sun.
Jerkass Has a Point: She mentions how Emma and her friends appear to receive special treatment from the police, as well as the fact that people who get close to Emma tend to end up dead. Both of these are technically true, but fail to take into account a lot of contextual situations. For example, part of why Emma and her friends are given special treatment is because they're the targets of the killing sprees. Typically speaking, targets tend to get some extra protection or leniency. However, her theories on those close to Emma dying, while unnecessarily harsh, hold a lot of weight; all of the victims are one or two degrees of separation away from Emma, max.
Never My Fault: She takes no responsibility or shows any form of guilt over her dangerous prank on Audrey that resulted in her co-prankster getting stabbed in self-defence. She even tried getting Audrey arrested despite the latter reacting as any sane person would in such a situation.
Too Dumb to Live: She blindly believes the guy she's seeing to throw a party to prank Emma, despite the rash of murders and the rather obvious signs that its too elaborate of a setup. What's worse is with the second season finale reveal of Kieran being Ghostface, she's just tempting fate and not realizing how strange it would be for Emma's boyfriend to do something like this.

Gina

Audrey's new girlfriend who also works as a manager at the Zenith Theatre.

Action Survivor: She joins the ranks of Emma's friends after the killer on Shallow Grove Island targets them all and comes out alive.
Genre Savvy: When she runs into Jeremy for the first time, her first instinct is to hold him off with a fireplace poker. It turns out he wasn't the killer, but it was still a smart move considering the circumstances.
Insecure Love Interest: Feels envy over how much more closer Audrey is to Emma, fearing that Audrey would leave her for Emma as she once had a thing for Emma and the two are very close. Turns out her last girlfriend before Audrey also cheated on her. She grows out of this mindset at the end.
Nightmare Fetishist: Has a liking for horror movies.
Red Herring: Becomes one after suddenly appearing on the island right as the murders start, even though a huge storm had stranded everyone on the island (and would most certainly stop any ferries from going out there).
What the Hell, Hero?: Audrey confronts her about taking pictures of both her and Emma, having followed them to the island.

Mr. Exposition: Her only real contribution to the plot is that she reveals more information about Anna Hobbs.
Samus Is a Girl: Thanks to her name, the protagonists expect her to be a man, and are quite surprised to find out she is a girl.

The editor for Noah and Gustavo's comic book based on Season 2's murder spree. He's the one who persuades the two to take the trip to Shallow Grove Island to find information on Anna Hobbs for another book. He's very pushy about getting this new book due to investing all his savings into the project, which quickly gets him on the bad side of the Lakewood gang.

Asshole Victim: He was rather insensitive and a jerk, so it's unlikely anyone will miss him.
Da Editor: For Noah and Stavo's comic book.
Jerkass: He's very pushy about receiving a new book from Noah and Gustavo and is generally pretty jerky and inconsiderate to everyone.
Red Herring: He's an immediate suspect number one because of him bringing the gang to the island for research for his new book, the derogatory prank he pulled on them and a fair bit of evidence is stacked against him.
Too Dumb to Live: When Gina is holding him back with a fireplace poker (thinking he was dangerous), he responds with the sarcastic, "What are you gonna do? Start a fire?" Because as you know, a fireplace poker is simply used for fires and can in no way be used to hurt or kill a person.

Ambiguously Evil: Daisy, now Maggie, has doubts that he really committed the murders he was accused of.
Childhood Friend Romance: With Daisy.
Expy: Of Jason Voorhees, but shares some commonality with Leatherface.
Greater-Scope Villain: Killing students in Lakewood out of revenge is partially the reason why Piper decided to enact another killing spree, terrorizing the town in response to her father's misery and death.
The Grotesque: He was born with horrible deformities that forced him to wear a mask.
Masking the Deformity: Brandon James was born with a deformed face, which he wears a mask to hide. This becomes the mask of the killer, who may or may not be Brandon.
Posthumous Character: James is assumed to be dead after being shot by the police and subsequently disappearing for decades. Until Season 2's "The Vanishing", Brandon James was thought to be dead when in-fact, both Daisy and Miguel Acosta helped him recover and hid him at a farm.
Predecessor Villain: Responsible for the past Lakewood murders.
Pretender Diss: If it really is him talking to Kieran in the Season 2 finale.

Summon Bigger Fish: The Season 2 finale suggests or implies that Brandon finally finds out about Kieran and Piper using his mask and his legacy as Lakewood's serial killer to make their own legacies. Needless to say, Brandon is not happy.
Tragic Villain: He was born deformed and treated as an outcast by the entire town. It doesn't excuse what he did, but goes some way to explaining how he went so wrong, and does give him a more sympathetic side than Piper and Kieran.
Two First Names: It's self-evident.

Lakewood Slashers / Ghostfaces (Unmarked Spoilers)

General

The following tropes apply to all the characters who take the role of "Ghostface":

Adaptation Name Change: The killers are never called "Ghostface" in the show, instead being referred to as the "Lakewood Slasher" or the killer.
Ax-Crazy: Both incarnations of Ghostface share one particular factor, and that is sadistically murdering others.
Big Bad: Of the series, with a new killer donning the mask for each season while building off the story established by their predecessor.
Boring Yet Practical: Instead of using the iconic Ghostface costume from the movies, the killer in the show has a more utilitarian approach to the iconic outfit, switching out the cheap Halloween robe of the Father Death costume for a black hooded raincoat/poncho and wearing dark everyday clothing with gloves and boots; this outfit is less physically restrictive than the Father Death cloak and allows the killer to roam around mostly unnoticed since the outfit is normal for Colorado weather, save for the killer's mask. Speaking of the mask, it was originally intended to be a post-op surgery mask, meaning that it's designed to be for everyday use, unlike the Ghostface mask.
Dark Is Evil: They all dress in dark rain ponchos and black outfits underneath to conceal their identity as they mercilessly prey on Lakewood's population.
Hates Their Parent: Piper and Kieran both hated their respective parents, with Piper blaming Maggie for the death of her father, Brandon James, and Kieran suffering from his dad's Parental Abandonment. The two of them bonded over their issues... and used them as motivation to murder people as Ghostface.
Malevolent Masked Man: Taking it from Brandon James, Lakewood's previous Serial Killer, the killers all wear masks to cover themselves, similar to the robes.
Revenge: In the first two seasons, both Ghostfaces were motivated by anger over their crappy childhoods.
Serial Killer: Similar to the movies, the Ghostfaces rack up a sizeable body count, motivated by their own various reasons.
Shout-Out:
- The mask used by the killers not only invokes the original Ghostface mask, but also the masks of Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees.
- The raincoats the killers wear may be a reference to the film Alice, Sweet Alice, in which the killer wears a yellow hooded raincoat.

As the first season comes to a close, Piper is revealed to be the main antagonist and the psychotic killer running amok in Lakewood. Turns out Piper is actually the daughter of Brandon James and Emma's mother, Maggie Duvall. She wears the same mask previously worn by her father during their murder sprees.

Antagonistic Offspring: Piper resents her mother, Maggie, for abandoning her.
Avenging the Villain: One of the reasons Piper desires to kill people; to avenge her father, Brandon James.
Bastard Bastard: She was born to Maggie and Brandon when they were teens, neither one being married at the time. She bitterly decides to fulfill the negative stereotype about illegitimate offspring by committing her killing spree, both because she is jealous of her half sister, Emma, and because she resents her mother, Maggie for abandoning her.
Big Bad: Of the first season, beginning a new reign of terror in Lakewood as Revenge for the town persecuting her father and committing her to a miserable childhood. Though she's not acting alone, she receives the most focus, and the climax of the first season is against her.
Big Bad Duumvirate: With Kieran. Both were active during the first season, though Piper was given the lion's share of focus and depicted as the mastermind, with Kieran as her accomplice. Once she's killed off, Kieran steps up to the plate in the second season.
Boom, Headshot!: How Emma kills her.
Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Piper appears to genuinely care about Emma and many of the other characters, going to lengths to establish friendships with many of them. She even discredits the idea of her being the killer when she is knocked unconscious and nearly killed by Ghostface. Unfortunately, she IS the killer and many of the things she does and say are subtle foreshadowing towards that.
Cain and Abel: With Emma, her half-sister through Maggie. Her father is Brandon James.
Comic Book Movies Don't Use Code Names: An inverted example, as this is the TV adaptation of the original movie franchise. In this incarnation, the name Ghostface is never used and is always referred to in-universe as "the Killer" or the "Lakewood Slasher".
Disc-One Final Boss: Piper is the main killer of the first season, but her death isn't the end of Lakewood's story, as Kieran takes her place in the second season.
The Dog Was the Mastermind: Jake and Noah suspected that the killer was somebody that absolutely no one would've suspected, being a background character that helped out the victims and seemed very nice toward them. They were right: Sweet, helpful, go-getter reporter Piper Shaw was the killer.
Evil All Along: Piper pretended to get close to Emma and befriend her, making her believe that she was trying to help.
Evil Is Hammy: Once it's revealed Piper is behind the murders, she makes Jill Roberts look tame in comparison.
Expy: The second film's Nancy Loomis, the killer who posed as a reporter but was really someone related to the original murderer, the third film's Roman Bridger, being the protagonist's hidden sibling, and somewhat of the fourth film's Jill Roberts, as they both filmed their murders with their partner.
Faux Affably Evil: Calm, cool, and collected all the while talking to someone over the phone. Will kill them in mere moments afterwards though.
For the Evulz: Piper’s motive for her killing spree, in addition to revenge against her missing mom, is to make Emma suffer, more or less because she can.
Foreshadowing: Piper mentions that her dad was murdered and the police did nothing about it. This is a hint to the fact that she's Brandon's daughter.
Genre Savvy:
- Piper is even more Genre Savvy then the previous cinematic Ghostfaces combined. She used Tyler O'Neil as a patsy for the more recent murders, and later, used a decoy to lead the cops away. When she tells Emma of a Sadistic Choice between selecting either the Good Friend or the Bad Friend, she follows the Exact Words when Emma tells not to hurt Brooke AKA the Bad Friend, thinking it would save Riley (the Good Friend) in the process. It does not.
- Another excellent move is stalking and causing minor injury to Brooke, rather than outright killing her, so as to make Branson look even more suspicious than he already is.
- Also predicted that Emma had a knife behind her back during the final confrontation.
Green-Eyed Monster: Piper was jealous that Emma had the perfect life, while her father died and her mother abandoned her, giving her a miserable life in the Blessed Sisters Orphanage.
Jack the Ripoff: Piper is imitating a killing spree from years before, supposedly carried out by her father, no less.
Kick the Dog:
- Killing Riley to punish Emma for not playing their game. The first victim, Nina, was an Asshole Victim, so this was what established what an evil bitch Ghostface really is.
- Then what Piper does to Will. Stab him, kidnap him, use him as bait for the other teens, kidnap him again after he was rescued, and set him up on a Death Trap that Emma, in her haste to save him, inadvertently activates right before his eyes.
Legacy Character: Despite being a different person, Piper's attire is exactly what her father wore during his murder sprees, as this killer has taken the exact appearance that killer worn and made it appear this was Brandon James Back from the Dead.
Manipulative Bitch: Essentially had everything planned out from the very beginning, as to how to execute her victims, and is the one who convinced Kieran to help her in starting a killing spree.
Predecessor Villain: To Kieran.
Prom Wrecker: After everyone feels safe because they think the killer's been caught, decides to show them this isn't the case at the Halloween Dance.
Samus Is a Girl: Is the killer Tyler O'Neill? The Mayor? Seth Branson? Ha ha, nope, it's the unsuspected and very female Piper Shaw.
Piper: "You were so easily convinced that it had to be his son that was swinging the knife, but it's 2015, Emma. Sexist much?"
The Sociopath: She became a Serial Killer not only because of revenge against her missing mother, but also to make Emma suffer. She is superficially charming enough to not be suspected and able to manipulate others to both execute her victims and avoid suspicion.
Stalker without a Crush: Noah points out that, though Emma is the center of Ghostface's attention and the one all of their antics are geared toward, they never target her directly, preferring instead to toy with her and attack her friends and family.
Troll: In series tradition, Ghostface delights in playing games with his victims and toying with the police. Made most apparent in Episode 3 when she pays somebody to pretend to be them and be caught the police so they can kill Riley unnoticed.
The Voice: While Ghostface does appear before they killed someone, as per series tradition, it is a given that Ghostface would convey messages over the phone and text messages as well.
Villain with Good Publicity: Piper is a famous reporter with her very own podcast, and is generally considered to be sweet by everyone, which only hides her true colors as the envious and vindictive daughter of Brandon James.
Vocal Dissonance: Piper would use a male voice changer to speak and taunt to their victims, not knowing if the killer is even male or female.

Kieran happens to be Piper's accomplice and pops up as the new killer in town once Emma has returned back home and bodies start piling up in Lakewood once again. This time, this Ghostface seems to holding a sinister agenda in mind than the normal hacking and slashing methods.

Antagonistic Offspring: Kieran resented his father for leaving him.
Avenging the Villain: Kieran's primary motive is to make the Lakewood Six suffer. Case in point, killing Jake Fitzgerald and Seth Branson are among the Scream franchise's most horrific deaths and showcases this killer isn't messing around. This case is confirmed when Emma and Audrey find Piper's corpse, knowing now they're targeting them because they killed Piper.
Beauty Is Bad: He is quite handsome, yet he's a psychotic murderer, just like who he's an expy of.
Big Bad: Of the second season. Like Roman from the third film, Kieran acts entirely on his own.
Big Bad Duumvirate: It's revealed that he was Piper's accomplice and active during the first season's killing spree.
Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Claiming to be Emma's boyfriend and an ally to the main cast, Kieran is really one half of the Ghostface duo and happily ready to kill off his "friends" as need be.
Blackmail: Is aware of Audrey's secret relationship with Piper, using the information to psychologically torture Audrey, blackmail her and set her up once he starts picking up where Piper left off.
Bond Villain Stupidity: Even as Emma tells him she's discovered he's the killer and he has a gun in his hand, he instead takes the time to tell her and Audrey the whole story of his plan with Piper and how he intends to kill them before framing them for his murders, much like Mrs. Loomis in Scream 2. Needless to say, this provides the duo with some much needed time to plan how to fight back.
Charles Atlas Superpower: Kieran is remarkably strong, as shown as when they almost kill Kristin Lang in a throw that launches her from a staircase railing to a few feet away, cracking her head on the way down.
Dead Person Impersonation: Uses a social media account of Riley Marra (a victim from Season 1) in order to lure Kevin Duvall back into town. His reason for doing so is currently unknown.
Domestic Abuser: He planned on killing Emma in Season 2. Not only that, he was implied to be dating Haley as well, who he brutally murdered.
Dragon Ascendant: He was Piper's accomplice in the first season until her death, then became the main killer of the second season.
Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Subverted, although he is avenging Piper and Emma even asks if he loved her, he disregards the notion and instead explains the feeling of getting to share a love of killing with someone as being what he feels he's lost.
Evil All Along: Not only is Kieran one of the Lakewood Six, he's also Piper's accomplice in the first season and the lead murderer in the second.
Evil Genius: A savvy enough hacker to break through even Noah's defences and a manipulative enough monster to penetrate Emma and her friend group even deeper than Piper ever did.
Expy: He turns out to be one for Billy Loomis, complete with bangs in The Reveal of him being with league with Piper.
Faux Affably Evil: Takes a mockingly pleasant tone when speaking to people over the phone, which he maintains even as he threatens to kill them.
For the Evulz: In addition to shared hatred of their respective parents who abandoned them, Kieran and Piper's interactions were based on a mutual enjoyment of killing. Kieran himself claims that "killing people is way more fun than therapy!"
I Never Said It Was Poison: Kieran inadvertently gives himself away as Ghostface when he says that Emma and Audrey will feel safe again, while he said that Emma will never feel safe again over the phone with the voice changer.
Kieran: "We're calling the police. You will feel safe again, Emma. You too, Audrey.
Emma: "What did you just say?"
Kieran: "We're calling the police."
Emma: "No. No, not that. What—? Before that... you just said... I will feel safe again? He said something just like that on the phone. "You will never feel safe again." Oh, my God... Oh, my god, it's you."
Jack the Ripoff: Kieran is Piper’s accomplice in replicating Brandon James' murder spree.
Karmic Death: Kieran dies about five minutes in to the Halloween special in a rather gruesome way, supposedly at the hands of the killer he copied, no less. He is treated with no sympathy whatsoever by the narrative, with his ex-girlfriend snarking that he got off easy.
Kick the Dog:
- Toying with Brooke's feelings over Jake after they break up, by pretending to be him on her phone. Then lets her know of his death by spilling his blood over her after she's goes up on stage as a finalists for Lady of the Lake, as well as dumping his body in front of her, to her shock.
- Burying Noah alive and placing Zoe in a separate coffin. After Emma and Audrey barely manage to save him, they are seemingly given the chance to save Zoe, only to discover she's already dead.
Legacy Character: Naturally, given Piper's death in the first season finale.
Leave No Witnesses: Kills a hotel owner who presumably saw Audrey meet up with Piper at his hotel during Season 1's killings. They do the same again when they kill Haley Meyers as she knew whom the killer was and believed them to be a "special friend."
Manipulative Bastard: In addition to Kieran gaslighting Emma as Ghostface, he pretends to be a loving boyfriend to Emma and companion to the others while secretly planning to murder the main cast as part of his own sick fantasy, even blackmailing Audrey regarding her affair with Piper.
Not So Stoic: Kieran's calm facade goes out the window after he's revealed to be the killer. The first thing he does is flash a wicked Slasher Smile and begins laughing and dramatically and loudly ranting his Evil Plan.
Patricide: He was the one who killed his father, Sheriff Hudson, in Season 1.
Red Herring: A subtle example, in that Piper, before she was revealed as the killer of Season 1, told Emma that he was her half-brother, which implies that she considered framing Kieran as Brandon James' child in order to get away with her killing spree, just in case framing Seth Branson didn't work out.
Sadist: Adores the chance to cause misery to the main cast. Throughout the second season, he forgoes many chances to outright kill the main characters and instead picks apart their relationship with one another, painfully killing people close to them and then calling to mock them for the suffering he's caused them.
The Sociopath: Willing to kill people both because he enjoys it and to eliminate witnesses. He manipulates others and lies to both appear like a good person and ensnare victims. All the while he interacts with his so-called friends, he is secretly planning to murder them.
Sudden Sequel Death Syndrome: He survived the second season, but is killed at the very beginning of the Halloween Special.
Superior Successor: Piper murdered at most five people with Kieran killing the other victims, while Kieran dispatched eight victims all by himself in Season 2.
Vocal Dissonance: Like before, the killer is still using the same voice changer or app that masks their voice, so they could conceal their voice.
Why Don't Ya Just Shoot Him?: Kieran is revealed as Ghostface. Instead of killing Emma, which was his overall goal for two seasons, he goes into an almost five minute boast about how Piper and he fooled her and her friends. This gives Emma and Audrey enough time to think of a way to save their lives.

Possibly the very first to don the Ghostface persona. They were revealed at the end of Season 2 via phone call with Kieran.

Aborted Arc: Because the third season focuses on an entirely new cast and setting, the third killer's identity may never be revealed.
Big Bad: Had the show's main story continued following the Lakewood cast, it's very likely they would have been the main villain of the third season.
Cop Killer: Their first onscreen kill, is a police officer escorting Kieran.
Greater-Scope Villain: If their single line in the Season Two finale is any indication, they were the very first Ghostface whose likeness was taken by Piper and Kieran. And they weren't very happy about it, either.
Karmic Death: They brutally off fellow killer Kieran in the Halloween Special.
Legacy Character: Inverted; they may be the very first Ghostface.
Predecessor Villain: It's implied that they're, in fact, the very first Ghostface and doesn't think too highly of the copycat killers that have been using his likeness. Doubly so if they were Brandon James, whose murderous rampage is at the center of Lakewood's dark past.
Pretender Diss: The second season finale heavily implies they're Brandon James (or at least a relative) and he's not very happy about his killer image being copied.
Villainous Legacy: Piper and Kieran apparently used their likeness to terrorize Lakewood in the first two seasons.

The Servant Girl

Anna Hobbs

The alleged psychopath behind the Shallow Grove Island murders, believed to have murdered her family and a man having an affair with her mother when they planned to put her in a mental institution. Noah points out that the story is largely filled with hokey theories and very little in the way of fact.

Attempted Rape: Her mother's lover, Reginald Whitman, turns his sights on her and angrily butchers her whole family when she resists, before Anna manages to kill him and put an end to his perversions.
Driven to Suicide: Possibly. It's originally believed that Anna killed herself after murdering her family and realizing what she had done, but as Noah theorized, it's possible that Anna dragged herself to the dock before dying of the injuries she already sustained from Reginald's attack. Then again, she could've also dragged herself to the dock and killed herself due all the trauma she had endured.
Frame-Up: Whitman's wife moves the bodies of the slain to frame Anna, hoping to save her family the shame of a husband having an affair and killing a family.
Posthumous Character: Is dead several years before the events of the Halloween special, but her role still plays a somewhat significant role in the events that transpire.

Shallow Grove Killer

The killer of the Halloween special. After hearing about Emma and all the murder sprees she had survived, Tom became obsessed with her, believing they could have a relationship. He posted about the Anna Hobbs legend on Jeremy's website, luring the group to the island. He then begins to kill anyone who gets in his way of being with Emma.

Arc Villain: He has nothing to do with the Brandon James killings in Lakewood, unlike the show's various Big Bads and operates as a standalone threat for the Halloween special.
Dead Person Impersonation: Murdered Alex Whitten (the brother of Anna Hobbs) and stole his identity.
Final Boss: Due to the series discontinuing the Lakewood/Brandon James plot, he's the last killer the cast faces. Had the show continued with the plot revolving around the Third Killer, he would have been an Interim Villain.
Harmful to Minors: Witnessed the murder of his parents when he was 4 years old and was subsequently trapped with their corpses for days afterwards.
If I Can't Have You…: Attempts to kill Emma when she finds out he's the killer and rejects his advances. Lampshaded by Emma.
Outside-Context Problem: Once it's discovered a killer is on the loose, the heroes assume he's got something to do with Kieran and his murder but the revelation that he's only been killing on the island makes him a separate threat from the show's usual Brandon James-related murderers.
Stalker with a Crush: He became obsessed with Emma after hearing about all the killing sprees she'd survived.
Tragic Villain: As deranged as he was, it's horrifying to learn that he witnessed the murders of his parents at four years old, leaving him locked away with their corpses for days.
We Can Rule Together: Tries to persuade Emma to be with him after she discovers he's the killer. Emma reacts just as you'd expect her to (See If I Can't Have You… above).
