Main Riders

    In General
  • Elemental Motifs: All three of them have a fire motif. Houtaro's Mid-Season Upgrade is the Gotchard Igniter, one of the Chemies Rinne uses to transform is called The Sun, and Supana has an innate power of black flames.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief:
    • Gotchard is the Thief. Being the least experienced of the three in both alchemy and combat means he has to work harder to catch up. However due to his natural bond with the Chemies, a myriad of forms and tools, and a determination that seems impossible to break, Gotchard finds himself earning victory often, usually against an opponent that thought they had HIM beat instead.
    • Majade is the Mage. While strong in her own right, Majade lacks in raw power compared to Gotchard or Valvarad. However, she can disrupt alchemy and use the Fantastic and Cosmic Chemies, all of whom possess unique abilities. This allows her to more easily surprise her enemies.
    • Valvarad is the Fighter. While Gotchard possesses a variety of forms and Majade can negate her enemies' abilities, Valvarad is just powerful. Really, really powerful. And given his experience in combat, as well as certain opponents having seemingly no other way to fight him other than via alchemy, he suffers no drawbacks from this seeming "limitation".
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Houtaro is the Nice who wants to befriend all Chemies and extends a hand out to others (although he has limits when it comes to Geryon and some malicious Malgam hosts). Supana is the Mean, as he's aloof to everyone and has disdain for Houtaro. Rinne is the In Between; she's not a jerk, but she initially showed scorn for Chemies and stuck to the rules of the Alchemist Academy.

    Houtaro Ichinose/Kamen Rider Gotchard (spoilers)

Portrayed by: Junsei Motojima (live), Eitoku (suit)
Young Houtaro portrayed by: Ibuki Ōsako

An ordinary second-year student of Furasu High who excels at sports but below average academics-wise. He is greatly filial towards his mother, prioritizing her over his own wants. As a result, he doesn't know what he wants to do with his life besides taking care of his mother and her restaurant. That is, until he learns the secret life one of his classmates, Rinne Kudo, leads, which leads him to meeting two magical monsters called Chemies, getting the GotcharDriver from a stranger, and using those two Chemies and his newly acquired driver to become Kamen Rider Gotchard.

Tropes applying to him in general

The Aspiring Big-shot Alchemist
  • All-Loving Hero: He cares about the values of humans and Chemies alike, and is determined to protect what he holds dear of, including his friends and Chemies as well. He even goes as far as offering his hand in friendship to Clotho despite them being mortal enemies in #32.
  • Badass Bystander: Prior to becoming Gotchard, he manages to pull Rinne away from SteamLiner.
  • Berserk Button: Supana learns the hard way that openly dismissing others as insignificant or worthless in front of him makes Houtarou much more authoritative.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Houtaro is generally friendly and non-confrontational, but push him past his limits and he'll show you exactly why he was given the Gotchardriver. Supana learns this the hard way when trying to take said device from him.
  • Book Dumb:
    • Houtaro isn't too good at studying, yet he can give unorthodox solutions when he puts his mind to it. His initiation test to enter the Alchemist Academy is to make two Chemies have the same weight through alchemy (which he doesn't know). His solution? Ask them to change their diets.
    • In #7, he tries to help Riku with his homework, only to be stumped at the boy's advanced geometry questions.
  • Brains and Brawn: He's the Brawn to Rinne's Brains, using his Rider powers to defeat Malgams and save the Chemies.
  • Character Catchphrase:
    • "Gotcha!" whenever he succeeds at something.
    • "That pure-hearted Chemy within you... I'm going to save it!", before he throws down with a Malgam.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He won't ever hesitate to stop and help people who are in trouble; this was true even when he was a normal human before receiving the Gotchardriver, as he literally pulls Rinne out of danger from Steamliner in #1.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Due to his inexperience, Ichinose attacks directly yet relentlessly, using all tools available to him whether it be his repertoire of combination attacks or a stairway railing to keep the pressure on his opponents. He's also willing to boobytrap his Gotchardraw Holder and have his Chemies come out of their cards to distract enemies while he's untransformed.
  • Complexity Addiction: Both Licht and Supana believe Houtaro has one of these at the subconscious level, which holds him back as Gotchard. Licht's reasoning comes from Houtaro having to cycle through six Wild Forms and max out the charge on the Gotcharge Gun just to defeat the Spider Malgam, while Supana sees it in his cooking sense — while not awful per se, the degree to which Houtaro mixes his ingredients are probably best left to molecular gastronomists in Supana's eyes.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: While Houtaro can help out around his mother's restaurant, whenever he makes his own meal ideas, he comes up with some weird combinations. Two examples from #1 and #4 respectively are cucumber Salisbury steak topped with mayonnaise and omurice with chicken wings. Even his custom cream puffs with meat is so bizarre and disgusting, the Cerberus Malgam, which has an affinity for meat, loathes it immediately on the first bite.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass:
    • As Supana and Lachesis learn the hard way, attempting to make Hotaro renounce his beliefs makes him far more competent than he usually would be; he managed to smack the former in a vital point to make him back off and successfully tricked the latter when she tried playing hostage-taker.
    • He also does this with Shiori (Spider Malgam). He plays on her arrogance by pretending to be helpless when she taunts him over using his Chemies to create new Malgam forms for herself, but as soon as she is distracted he gets Saboneedle, Apparebushido, and Hopper 1 to turn the tables on her.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: In #24, due to him losing all but one Chemy, he's forced to learn a new technique that transforms him into Iron Gotchard...and he ends up falling unconscious.
  • The Defroster: To Rinne. His kindness, altruism, and similarities to her father are what make Rinne soften up and grow as a person.
  • Delusions of Grandeur: The winter movie reveals he dreams of becoming an Academy faculty member. In the same movie, it turns out that his academic performance has degraded even further thanks to joining the Academy at all.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: His goal is to find his spark in life — or "Gotcha", as he dubs it — due to him putting his mother and the restaurant above his own dreams. #2 reveals his newly found "Gotcha": befriending the Chemies and becoming an elite alchemist.
  • Determinator: If he sets his mind to protect someone, nothing will stop him. When he asks Koichiro to teach him how to survive Goriki's Whirlwind Backbreaker move, he keeps going through the move over and over again, never giving up.
    Houtaro: One more time!
  • Disappeared Dad: His father works as an adventurer, and is currently overseas.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: He's not impressed by Geryon's plan to gain the power to turn everything into gold and put the world into eternal stasis.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's less adept at academic aspects, especially compared to Rinne. When he's asked what the Renaissance was in class, he describes it as "someone who chases big dreams".
  • Dumbass Has a Point: While he does get the description of the Renaissance wrong, Hotaro is kinda correct that a lot of history's most famous inventors and artists, those who chase big dreams, were created in that time.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He first appears transformed in Geats' summer movie, and untransformed in The Stinger of Geats's final episode.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • His cameo in the final episode of Geats is him frantically chasing after Hopper1 while clearly in a panic, establishing him as an awkward everyman, in sharp contrast to Ace.
    • His first appearance in Gotchard establishes how he likes mixing things in creative bentos and that he puts his mother and the restaurant above his own needs, as he has to race off to school but not before promising that he'll come back to help his mother out. When he gets to school, he gets reprimanded that he left the career in the career choice form blank, as he states that he's still finding his "Gotcha".
    • His appearance in the show proper also exhibits his lack of academic prowess and idealistic nature, thinking the Renaissance means "someone who chases big dreams". This is in contrast to Rinne's on-point answer — despite the fact that both of them weren't paying attention in class.
    • Finally, what gets him to become a Kamen Rider is his bravery to confront a supposed "monster" (actually Hopper1) and willingly saving Rinne from being run over by Steamliner. He also spends time feeding some of his bento to Hopper1.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: There are very few people the kid won't befriend, even Supana, so long as they are willing to be kind. The main exceptions are most of the Malgam hosts and Geryon, who are so devoid of anything positive that he doesn't even bother.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • From the way he asked his mother about it, it is heavily implied that Hotaro disapproves of his father setting up an restaurant before suddenly taking off on an adventure and leaving his mother to take care of things, looking surprised to learn that she doesn't resent him for it at all.
    • Even though Houtaro desires to befriend all of the Chemies, he is still capable of recognizing when what they're doing is wrong and needs to stop. #22 has him hold Zukyumpire at gunpoint with a Chemy Riser after learning its Charm Person powers are endangering its harem, Renge included.
  • Fatal Flaw: His naivete. While he is an idealist and believes that there is good in people, this naivete can also make him easily fall into traps. Case in point, the #24 reveals that Hotaro approaching Minato despite knowing he's working for Geryon at the moment made him lose all but one of his Chemies! In Hotaro's defense, everyone else also agreed to approach this false trap under the assumption that Minato is really a mole.
  • Foreshadowing: When he sees Hopper1 for the first time, he states that there's a "warm, fuzzy feeling" inside of him. This is explained 13 episodes later when it's his heart reconnecting to seeing the Chemy again when they were younger, which is later confirmed in #18.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: When he opens his memories to X-Rex to show the Chemy how serious he is about his dream, the last memory he sees is himself as a child playing with Hopper1 years before the little Chemy finds him in the school shed. Hotaro does not remember this. #18 reveals this is because Fuga wiped his memories, so to ensure Geryon wouldn't come after him.
  • Hand Seals: His transformation pose is explained as him performing the alchemist ritual of fusing with Chemies, with his hands representing the act of putting the Chemies together to fuse before sticking them out to emulate the Alchemists' Academy symbol.
  • The Heart: His compassion and empathetic nature lead him to try making friends with the Chemies (which becomes his main goal); this makes it easier for him to understand what they want to do and draw out their potential in unorthodox ways. For example, he passes the Alchemist Academy's test without actually using any transmutation by asking Kamantis and Odorippa to change their eating habits, which equalizes their weights as he was assigned to do. This ability to befriend Chemies initially puts him at odds with the other alchemists, but proves instrumental in accessing the Level 10 Chemies' powers.
  • Idiot Hero: Houtaro is not exactly the brightest bulb in the box. Case in point, his Establishing Character Moment is him thinking The Renaissance refers to people who chase big dreams. He also is unable to help Riku, a 5th grader, with his homework on advanced geometry.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His first name has been rendered as either "Houtarou", "Houtaro", or "Hotaro", depending on how one translates Japanese vowel elongation.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: The kid's practically drunk on this trope; any form of malice from him is generally aimed at those who deserve it, but even then Houtarou is such a Nice Guy that it's borderline impossible for him to reach a state where he can become a Malgam. This not only allows him to continually max out the Gotchardriver, but completely nullify The Power of Hate used by his enemies. This is best exemplified with Iron Gotchard, which could potentially turn Houtarou into a Malgam if done incorrectly. Since this is Houtarou, that outcome doesn't come to pass.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • "Poet" by Rinne, since he states that the meaning of the Renaissance is "Someone who chases big dreams" in #1.
    • "Treasure Boy"note  by Renge, based on the alternate reading of the kanji in his name (宝).
    • Gouriki calls him "Baby Face". This is both due to his youthful looks, and because a babyface is also wrestling jargon for a good/heroic wrestler.
    • "Kamen Rider Brat" by Clotho.
    • "Easy Breezy Guy" by Kyoka, apparently based on how Supana described him.
  • Jerkass to One: Downplayed. While he's ordinarily a Nice Guy, he and Supana quickly develop a mutual dislike of one another, though Houtaro does still try extending a friendship gesture if he can.
  • Large Ham: Can be rather theatrical at times, loudly announcing his accomplishments.
  • Like Father, Like Son: According to his mother, at least.
  • Made of Iron:
    • He somehow manages to walk off multiple back-breakers from Goriki and Asahi G in #5. To compare, when Goriki unleashed this on Asahi's prized pupil, the student had to retire. He previously had his back struck by a bokken from Supana in #3 to protect Hopper1 and doesn't even flinch.
    • The beating he gets from Dread during its debut also counts. While he did pass out from a mixture of it, exhaustion, and emotional trauma, not only did it take all of that to put him down, but he was back up not long after. And let's not forget he was about to try to fight Atropos before his body mercifully shut down, even while in that state.
    • #32 has him receiving a roundhouse kick to the hand from Clotho, and somehow doesn't get his wrist shattered.
  • Meaningful Name: As pointed out in episode 5, Ichinose has Ichi in it for 1, forming a pair with Kudo whose name has Ku in it for 9, making them a perfect 10.
  • Momma's Boy: Is greatly devoted to his mother, to the point where the very first thing he does after school hours is to rush back to her restaurant to help with cooking.
  • Mysterious Past: Used to play in the Ouroboros Realm with Chemies as a child, acting like none of it was strange at all.
  • Neural Implanting: Information on how to transform and achieve higher modes is sometimes beamed directly into his mind from an unknown source.
  • Nice Guy: An extremely kind-hearted and earnest young man, making him the perfect candidate for using the power of the Chemies.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: His answer for what the Renaissance means — "Someone who chases big dreams" — has made Rinne sarcastically call him a Poet.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The instant Houtaro learns the Orochi Malgam attacked a kid he befriended earlier, his cheery and submissive behavior vanishes and he becomes much more stern and aggressive, to the point that he actually ordered Supana to help rather than letting him do things his way.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Billed as such in his profile. Notably, this makes him the first lead Rider to fit this trope in the Reiwa Era, as the previous four had all been young adults (or, in the case of Ace, over 2,000 thanks to Past-Life Memories).
  • Real Men Can Cook: He helps out in his mother's restaurant and his first scene is him making his own unique bento meal. That being said, though, his dishes usually have a poor reception from those who try them, often to his annoyance.
  • Rookie Red Ranger: He's the newest member of the Alchemists' Academy as of #2, who also serves as the main protagonist and Kamen Rider of the story. Ironically, his main form's principal color is blue.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: In a different way from Rinne, as the winter movie reveals his time in the Academy is negatively impacting his already-lackluster grades in regular school.
  • Smarter Than They Look: He manages to pull a "I Surrender, Suckers" on Lachesis of all people, despite being academically challenged.
  • Technician vs. Performer: He's the Performer to Rinne's Technician. He knows next to nothing about the technical aspects of alchemy at the start, yet his ability to communicate with the Chemies as well as his Rider powers get him a slot in the Alchemists' Academy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Initially starts as a low-rank Alchemist, with his ring being a blue color. By #24, he's achieved S-Rank with a golden ring with a red gem, courtesy of Fuga.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Not that Hotaro isn't a nice young man in the present, but in the past he was a far more mellow child, still understandably unconcerned with what to do with his life once he graduated from school.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He frequently questions the Alchemist rule of mind-wiping outsiders and forcibly separating from the Chemies that they've bonded to, despite Minato's insistence that this is how things have to be run. This takes on a new light with the revelation that he had his own childhood memories tampered with as well.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: The guy isn't exactly the fondest of the supernatural, with anything ghost-related scaring the utter bejeesus out of him.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Played With. He's perfectly willing to fight Atropos head-on despite her resemblance to a child. That being said, Houtaro gets along with actual children like Riku for the most part, so it's more that he's willing to make an exception for a major villain.
  • Younger and Hipper: Hotaro is the youngest protagonist in the Reiwa era yet.
  • You Remind Me of X: Rinne keeps seeing Hotaro's kindness for Chemys to be like that of her father's... and not in a good way. She gradually warms up to him though.

Gotchanko! Gotcha! Gotcha! Gotcha! Platina Gotchard!

  • Abnormal Ammo: The Gotcharge Gun and Gotchatornado function by loading Chemy Cards.
  • All Your Powers Combined: The X-Assemble card fuses Exceedfighter, BeetlX, Lixion, X-Fortress, and Xeggdrasil to Super Gotchard's armor all at once, when the Gotchardriver normally only permits one at a time. In addition, Platina Gotchard is able to channel the powers of other Chemies into its attacks in any combination.
  • Anchored Attack Stance: Fire SteamHopper's Rider Kick involves taking one of these, because bolting himself to the ground with an array of chains is the only thing capable of holding back Gotchard for long enough for him to build up enough thrust.
  • Artistic License – Physics: BakuonTelevi Wild Form is stated to be capable of emitting sounds up to 600 decibels in volume. Overlapping with Writers Cannot Do Math, this is a physical impossibility, as the energy required to do this is a hundredth of the Big Bang and would likely either crush the entire universe or cook it to death if emitted.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Wild Form boasts some very impressive transformations with their own unique abilities and destructive power, but is the Gotchardriver's Shapeshifter Default Form and therefore isn't as reliable as its humanoid transformations.
  • Belly Mouth: Super Gotchard Cross X-Rex Form's chest armor is in the shape of a fanged maw.
  • Bling of War: In a very different way from past examples. While most past Riders apply this trope with gold or silver in a Super Mode suit, Gotchard uses this in his base form; looking closer reveals that a large portion of the SteamHopper suit has the blue parts done in blue chrome, which starkly contrasts with the flat black and metallic silver of the base suit.
  • Blue Is Heroic: He's the main Rider and hero, and his main form is primarily blue in color. Super Gotchard takes this to a whole other level, coloring the entire undersuit a vibrant dark teal.
  • Blue and Orange Contrast: In addition to SteamHopper's bright blue armor, the Gotchard suit has orange as a prominent highlight color.
  • Breaking Old Trends:
    • Gotchard’s base form is mostly blue, a color that usually isn’t strongly associated with main Riders with only a small handful of them having it alongside another color. It’s usually a color that’s associated with secondary Riders.
    • Unlike its traditional use as an overarching term for Riders (with some series rarely or flat-out never using it), "Kamen Rider" here is the specific in-universe name associated with the Driver. "Gotchard" is just a nickname Houtaro came up for it after transforming for the first time.
  • Built with LEGO: Downplayed with KesuOrochi's helmet, which is one of the Yamato no Orochi's heads made out of erasers but has the same voxel aesthetic as actual building block toys.
  • Chest Blaster: Has one in BatKingrobo Wild Form.
  • Cool Helmet: With most basic forms going unused and the ones that do show up having limited armor outside of armaments, this is specifically how all 46 theoretical forms distinguish themselves, shown through the backing of each Ride Chemy Card. GokigenOdin is a specific transplanted case of this, as the bulk of its helmet is Haodin's pickelhaube.
  • Cool Sword: The X-Gotchalibur, a switchblade that folds up into an attachment for the Gotchardriver. When used this way, it unlocks Kamen Rider Super Gotchard Form and allows the use of rank 10 cards.
  • Deadly Upgrade: Iron Gotchard is accessed using forbidden techniques that could potentially turn Houtarou into a Malgam if performed incorrectly. Houtarou's non-malicious demeanor and his bond with Steamliner allow him to avoid that outcome, but the resulting power still knocks him out cold after its first usage.
  • Detachment Combat: While Gotchard's ability to disassemble itself usually only comes into play for finishers by changing between normal and Wild modes, it can also be used to teleport short distances by disintegrating and then reforming at the target location.
  • Elemental Powers:
    • Shock and Awe: GoldMechanicer and LightningJungle Forms grant him power over electricity.
    • Playing with Fire: Fire Gotchard's engines allow for immense power and heat to be generated, both in terms of combat necessity but also just as a by-product of how fast Gotchard can move while in the form.
  • Eyeless Face: BeroLesia Wild Form, which has to see out of a giant gaping smile in place of actual goggles. Also doubles as Eyes Do Not Belong There, as Gotchard is biomechanical and therefore the visor inside that mouth is his actual set of eyes.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: Some of Gotchard's Punk Rider Goggle variations are most definitely not eyewear, which becomes this trope due to Gotchard not being a suit and having to see out of them in Wild Form. Examples include headlights (SmaHotaru), clock hands (TimeRaptor), a mouth (BeroLesia), and mirrors (StagMirror.)
  • Finishing Move:
    • GotcharDriver: Dubbed "Fevers", accessed via pressing the Altvoke Levers on the sides of the Driver.
      • SteamHopper: A burst of steam erupts from the valves on Gotchard's helm, propelling him as he rushes towards the target, transforming into Wild Form. As he enters striking range he turns back into Rider Form, flames engulfing his leg as he delivers a Rider Kick.
      • OdoriMantis (Wild): Gotchard conjures a cyclone that launches the target into the air, with green wind blades dealing additional damage.
      • AppareSkebow: In Wild Form, Gotchard rapidly spins in place and creates a cyclone that buffets the target, before finishing with a spinning kick in Rider Form.
      • AntWrestler (Rider): Gotchard performs a diving Rider Kick.
      • BurningGorilla (Rider): Gotchard stomps the ground, the dislodged rock fragments coalescing to form a giant fist wreathed in fire. He then throws a Rider Punch, launching the fist towards the target.
      • NeedleHawk: Gotchard soars into the air and transforms into Wild Form, diving towards the enemy. Upon entering range he turns back into Rider Form and performs a Rider Kick.
      • ExceedMighty: Gotchard performs a gold energy-variant of Faiz's Crimson Smash finisher, with him transforming into Wild Mode before plowing through the target, as well as Kuuga's emblem replacing Faiz's. Should there be multiple targets, the number of energy drills increase, with Gotchard splitting into the appropriate number of copies.
      • GoldMechanicer: Gotchard transforms into Wild Mode, holding the target in place with the Multiple Torclaws. He then leaps into the air, turning back into Rider form as he delivers a somersaulting heel drop.
      • HicheSlaus: Gotchard disorients the target with a cloud of rose petals before blasting it with a high-pressure stream of water. He then finishes off with a roundhouse kick that launches another wave of water.
      • LightningJungle: Gotchard turns into Wild Mode, erecting multiple lightning towers that surround the target and blast it with electricity. He then finishes off with a flurry of blitzing attacks.
      • FullFullRocket: Gotchard fires his rockets and speeds towards the target, before performing a variation of Build's Vortex Finish.
    • Gotcharge Gun: Dubbed "Gotcharge Busters", accessed via scanning a Chemy Card in the Gotcharger.
      • Steamliner: Gotchard fires blasts of steam, creating a smokescreen that disorients enemies within it.
      • Kamantis: Gotchard fires multiple chevrons to damage his enemies.
      • Renkingrobo + Bulletbaang + Saboneedle: Gotchard charges the Gotcharge Gun and fires multiple needles that converge on the target.
    • Gotchatornado: Dubbed "Tornado Arrows" or '"Chemy Slash"'s, accessed via loading a Chemy Card in the Gotcha Spin.
      • Kamantis: Gotchard fires a salvo of chevrons at the target.
      • Apparebushido: Gotchard fires an energy arrow into the air that takes the shape of a giant katana, which slashes the target.
      • Mitemirror: Gotchard summons a mirror to block an attack.
    • Exgotchalibur:
      • "Shining Fevers" in the driver.
      • UFO-X: Gotchard detaches the UFOs on his wrists, which immobilize the target and beams it in front of him. Both then rise into the air, a construct of the solar system appearing around the target as Gotchard unleashes a flurry of blitzing attacks.
      • X-Rex: Gotchard manifests an energy construct of X-Rex around himself before he leaps toward his target. He swings his legs in a scissor kick like motion once in range of the target and causes the X-Rex construct to bite down with incredible force.
      • Xtrash with Level 10 Chemy cards or Strash with regular Chemy cards in sword mode.
      • Raidenji: Gotchard inserts the Raidenji Chemy Card, and slashes enemies with lightning.
      • Flayrose: Gotchard inserts the Flayrose Chemy Card, and delivers multiple fire-enhanced slashes.
      • UFO-X: Two versions:
      • Super Gotchard delivers a blue energy slash.
      • Super Gotchard sends a bluish energy whip to the target, allowing him to separate the target from their other factor.
      • X-Rex: Super Gotchard manifested a giant X-Rex leg energy projection from his Exgotchalibur, before stabbing the blade downward, sending the X-Rex Leg energy to stomp the enemy.
    • Gotcharigniter: When using the Gotcharigniter, his Fever finishers evolve into Burning Fevers, enchanced to a degree due to the Fire Dokkan on his back.
      • Steamhopper Burning Fever: Fire Gotchard first presses the Altvoke levers before assuming the same one-legged stance like the default Steamhopper. However, this time the Fire Dokkan on his back will produce several fiery chains to momentarily hold his footing as the same part starts to ignite akin of a jet engine. Once Fire Gotchard pulls the Altvoke levers back, the chains will disappear, massively accelerating Fire Gotchard to the enemy as his right foot starts to ignite as well. Fire Gotchard finally deliver a kick using the ignited foot, obliterating and burning the enemy without harming the Chemy.
      • AppareSkebow Burning Fever: Fire AppareSkebow Gotchard presses the Altvoke levers and physically holds himself in place helped by his wheeled feet from Skebows while the Fire Dokkan builds up thrust. Once it's hit maximum speed, he pulls the levers and releases, slashing his foe with incredible force, speed, and heat, taking the foe down in a single slash.
    • Tenliner & CrossHopper:
      • Iron Knuckle: Iron Gotchard first detaches the Heavy Expressure gauntlets from his arms before pressing the Altvoke levers. He then gets into a stance as the Heavy Expressure releases steam. Iron Gotchard then pulls the Altvoke levers, swinging his fists and firing the Heavy Expressure gauntlets at the enemy. He then delivers one more swing with his fist, piercing the Heavy Expressure through the enemy and obliterating them.
      • Iron Knuckle Liner Fever: Iron Gotchard is able to perform a finishing attack with the use of a single Ride Chemy Card that isn't Tenliner, or a random pair of Ride Chemy Cards including Tenliner.
      • Platina Shoot: Platina Gotchard first presses the Altvoke levers, jumping into the air in a stance before spinning vertically, entering a T-pose and dives straight down at his opponent as Crosshopper jumps out of the Platina Passion Athanor, entering a T-pose stance as well and dives straight down towards the opponent alongside Platina Gotchard. The latter then then pulls the Altvoke levers, channeling Tenliner's power into the left Unison Hopperling Pressure before kicking his opponent alongside a manifested Crosshopper.
      • Platina Shoot LinerHopper Fever: Platina Gotchard inserts a pair of two Ride Chemy Cards (excluding CrossHopper and Tenliner together) into the Gotchardriver, combining their powers together to perform a finishing attack.
  • Flash Step: Fire Gotchard specializes in these, courtesy of the gigantic jetpack strapped to its back.
  • Goggles Do Something Unusual: The Punk Rider Goggles, which change with every form. By default, they're a pair of normal goggles with Super-Toughness to accommodate SteamHopper's mobility, but can change into anything resembling eyewear (including actual extra eyes and entire second visors, as shown with forms like BatKingrobo and GreatSassorry) and gain additional functions for navigation and visibility depending on the current form.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority:
    • The Legend Rider forms are primarily golden in color, with token appearances of the featured Legend Riders' colors.
    • Super Gotchard Cross UFO-X and Star Gotchard Forms also give him gold-colored armor.
  • The Gunslinger: His primary weapon is the Gotcharge Gun.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Gotchard is not a suit of armor, but Hotaro's actual body while transformed, with the Gotchardriver using alchemy to turn him into either a Cyborg or an outright chimera spliced with the DNA and machinery of the component Chemys. This comes with a few benefits regular Rider suits don't afford their users, like being able to adjust Houtarou's actual physique for certain forms or the ability to disassemble itself and reform for extra mobility.
  • Hope Bringer: Fuga describes the Gotchardriver as a tool to bring about hope.
  • I Call It "Vera": Houtaro is the one who gives the GotcharDriver — and his Rider form, by extension — its name.
  • In a Single Bound: In SteamHopper Wild Form, he can reach great heights in a single jump.
  • Light Is Good: Platina Gotchard has predominantly white armor and is firmly a hero.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: VenomMariner can fire missiles from the ports on its shoulders.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Super Gotchard Form, accessed via the X-Gotchalibur attached onto the Gotchardriver. The form enables the use of Level 10 Chemies' powers. Then, there's Fire Gotchard form which is accessed through Gotcha Ignitor, allowing him to perform engine/fire-based attacks while using his standard forms such as SteamHopper and AppareSkebow. Next, there's Iron Gotchard, which is accessed via Tenliner, an upgraded Level 10 variant of Steamliner. In this form, Gotchard uses two train-themed knuckles as his weapons to destroy the Malgam with ease. Moreover, the form can also be upgraded into Platina Gotchard via Crosshopper, which is an evolved version of Hopper-1 that docks inside the Tenliner's cockpit.
  • Mighty Glacier: In contrast with the preceding Fire Gotchard, Iron Gotchard is really slow and borderline immobile, but compensates with its incredible defense, sheer strength, and power of its Rocket Punch.
  • Mini-Mecha: Wild Form, which temporarily disintegrates Gotchard's body and reforms his armor into a mechanical lifeform with him in control.
    • SteamHopper becomes a giant grasshopper with a smokestack.
    • AppareSkebow is compressed into a suit of Japanese armor on a skateboard.
    • MadPilets transforms Gotchard into a pirate ship on wheels, with his head as the frame and having long mechanical arms.
    • OdoriMantis becomes a giant mantis donning a dancer attire on while riding a mini tornado.
    • EnergyMaru becomes a ninja made of energy drink.
    • BulletChoucho becomes a gun with butterfly wings.
    • AntWrestler becomes a giant ant-like wrestler flanked by two ants that serve as Attack Drones.
    • SmaHotaru becomes a giant firefly with a smartphone screen on its chest.
    • SpicWhale becomes a giant whale-themed motorbike.
    • NeedleHawk becomes a giant mechanical hawk with spiked armor.
    • BatKingrobo becomes a Humongous Mecha with bat wings.
    • ExceedMighty becomes a gold-armored Gouram.
    • LightningJungle becomes a metal tree with live wires dangling from it.
    • GoldMechanicer becomes a giant mechanical crab with motorbike wheels.
    • BakuonTelevi becomes a giant mechanical cicada with a speaker in its chest and TV screens for wings.
    • StagMirror becomes a stag beetle-shaped mirror.
    • GreatSasorry becomes a tiny winged scorpion.
    • DoctorHebi becomes a stethoscope with an energy snake as its tubing.
    • Bunnyparka becomes a floating parka with a bunny-ear hood.
    • Tricatcher becomes a spider with triceratops horns.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: His secondary weapon is the Gotchatornado, a cross between a bow and a double-bladed sword.
  • Multiform Balance: Gotchard is a particularly strong demonstration of this both in terms of the differences in both power and abilities of each of his humanoid forms, but also between those and his Wild Form counterparts of them. It's also why his power is so readily visible even during the beginning of the series, between all the Chemy combinations the Driver can make, as well as the number of forms available, Gotchard has a form for nearly any situation that can arise.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • GreatSassorry's helmet clearly harkens back to Kamen Rider Drake, as it wears another visor that greatly resembles Drake's (representing Greattonbo) instead of regular goggles.
    • TimeRaptor's helmet quite obviously takes after Kamen Rider Zi-O, right down to the clock hand antennae having a unique function (in Gotchard's case, they serve as the form's Punk Rider Goggles.)
    • Cross X-Rex's armor adds attachments to the legs rather than the arms like UFO-X, which references Kamen Rider Revi's Tyrannosaurus Rex motif and early focus on kicking techniques due to Ikki's background as a soccer player.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: The Wild Forms can vary wildly in design compared to his standard Rider appearances, including CGI, 2D model renders (OdoMantis and SpicWhale) and outright props (BulletChoucho being "portrayed" by a butterfly-themed gun with eyes and BunnyParka being "portrayed" by a human-sized rabbit themed parka.)
  • Necessary Drawback:
    • The Gotcharignitor is incredibly powerful and can bolster the strength of many of Gotchard's various forms. However it is an engine and requires time to cooldown between uses, lest it overheat and potentially burn Houtarou instead. Fortunately it can be cooled via the use of Chemies and with both the Level 10 forms, as well as more allies to help in battle, this isn't as big of an issue as it could be.
    • Iron Gotchard relies on Tenliner to limit the damage on Houtarou's body, so the instant Steamliner becomes unable to maintain said state the strain ends up canceling the transformation and knocking him out cold.
  • The Power of Friendship: Gotchard uses emotion as its most reliable and efficient power source. The better Hotaro's relationship with a Chemy pair is, the stronger and more controllable the resulting Gotchard form is. On the contrary, if it's too low, he'll be stuck in Wild Form. Now this isn't necessarily a drawback given the strength of the Wild forms, merely a demonstration that even greater power, as well as the benefits of a humanoid frame come with a stronger bond between the three.
    • This is prevalent in his form debuts. Combinations involving Chemies that Houtaro has saved personally (with the exception of OdoriMantis) usually go straight to humanoid form, while those he receives through happenstance (BulletChoucho) default to Wild Mode.
    • Outright enforced in regards to the Level 10s. Given their high degree of power, intelligence, and unpredictability, they can't be sealed, or subjugated at all. The only way to reliably use their power is to have them willingly let you borrow it. Given Houtaro's nature, while the process isn't instant, he has a greater chance than most to do so.
  • Powers as Programs: Platina Gotchard allows Houtaro to use the power of multiple Chemies all at once without the restrictions of a Gotchanko Combo. Notably, this form allows him to use even multiple Level 10 Chemies together, or Level 10 Chemies with other Chemies.
  • Purple Is Powerful: BatKingrobo Wild Mode is a purple-colored Humongous Mecha and can fire off a massive Chest Blaster. However, it also consumes a lot of energy, forcing Hotarou to detransform sooner than he wants to.
  • Red Is Heroic: Some of his forms grant him red armor, namely AppareSkebow.
  • Russian Reversal: Once Iron Gotchard is acquired, the way Gotchard and Valvarad interact with other Chemies swap places: Iron Gotchard is now the one using them for more basic maneuvers like finishers, while Kamen Rider Valvarad is the one performing full suit changes with them.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Wears a white scarf dubbed the Alchemy Muffler in his Rider form.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Batkingrobo is so far Gotchard's most powerful form since he's a giant robot with wings that can fire an energy beam. In exchange, Hotaro can't maintain the transformation for very long.
  • Shout-Out: it was confirmed by the staff of the series that part of Iron Gotchard's design (specially the arms) was inspired by The Big O.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Using Deepmariner's ability to generate water literally anywhere, Gotchard can fire his torpedoes into portals of water and have them land from any direction he chooses be it behind his foe, or from their sides. Presumably, this extends to his own movements as well.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: GoldMechanicer and LightningJungle both make Houtaro's body more muscular to accommodate their truly massive armor.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Houtaro is nowhere near Supana's level in terms of alchemy and combat skills, but the Gotchardriver's system more than outclasses that of Valvarad's in terms of raw power.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • Gotchard's compatibility with the Fantastic and Cosmic Chemies are lowered by default even with The Power of Friendship (as indicated by them producing generic sounds in the Gotchardriver apart from their names when used to transform), making way for Rinne to step in and use them fully as Majade.
    • Iron Gotchard gets hit with an especially bad case of this when faced up against the Dragon Malgam, as not only does the blasted thing stomp the poor guy through a floor, it also mercilessly exploits the form's poor mobility, and it's superior strength rendering Iron Gotchard's enhanced durability moot.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Often likes to use grappling techniques commonly used by wrestlers in his fights. His aptly-named AntWrestler form takes it to the forefront, formed from both Antrooper and Wrestler G, and which makes it's debut in #5, the wrestling episode.

Houtaro Ichinose (Future)/Kamen Rider Gotchard Daybreak

Portrayed by: DAIGO (voice), Kōsuke Asai (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krgo_firegotcharddaybreaksteamhopper.png
Gotchanko Fire! Steamhopper! Achi~!

A version of Houtaro hailing from an alternate future where Geryon won and took over half the planet. He joins the fray after Geryon became unsealed, and wields empowered "Daybreak" versions of all 100 basic Chemies.

  • 24-Hour Armor: He stays in Gotchard Daybreak to avoid physically touching the present Houtaro, as Daybreak Timelord is injured every time its user touches their counterpart.
  • The Ace: Compared to Houtaro, this Gotchard is far more experienced in combat and use of Chemies.
  • Advertised Extra: Has the most real estate on the poster for the second part of the show, but two episodes after it was revealed, he departs and is never heard from again.
  • Ambiguous Situation: He is clearly not from this world in some aspect. Daybreak Hopper1 has been his partner for quite some time, yet Houtaro is the only known partner of the original. He uses the Gotcharigniter even though the only one the Academy should have is still under construction, and it is explicitly stated Gotchard Daybreak's armor is aged. #18 reveals he's Houtaro's future self. Him enabling present-day Houtaro to create his own Gotcharigniter causes the Gotchard Daybreak future to become an alternate future.
  • Badass Cape: In his Fire Gotchard form, his Scarf of Asskicking flares out to become a flame-themed cape.
  • Bad Future: He's the Hotarou who came from a future where Geryon won and took over half the planet.
  • Blue and Orange Contrast: It's primarily orange where the normal Gotchard is blue.
  • Character Catchphrase: "You have two choices. You can [X], or you can [Y]." Like challenging Hotaro "You can let me handle this, or you can take control of your own fate"; or telling a Malgam "You can let those people go, or you can die by my hand."
  • Dare to Be Badass: He challenges Hotaro to be stronger and control his own fate. This is because he wants Houtaro to avert the Bad Future he's from.
  • The Faceless: We never see what he looks like beneath the helm.
  • Future Badass: Gotchard Daybreak is Houtaro from a Bad Future, and far stronger than him, with all 100 Daybreak Chemies.
  • Finishing Move:
    • GotcharDriver: Like the normal Gotchard (his younger self), Gotchard Daybreak have finishers known as Fevers'', except they are propelled by his experience.
      • Steamhopper Burning Fever: Gotchard Daybreak pushes and opens the Altvoke Levers, turning into Wild Mode, his mantle charging with flames, as he performs a powerful flaming kick.
    • Gotcharge Gun
      • Gotcharge Buster:
      • Bulletbaang (Daybreak Version): Gotchard Daybreak fires flame-enhanced bullets.
      • Skebows (Daybreak Version): Gotchard Daybreak summons Skebows to ram into enemies.
      • Junglejan (Daybreak Version) + Raidenji (Daybreak Version): Using two Gotcharge Guns, Gotchard Daybreaks fires two blasts that then form a wrestling ring.
    • Gotchartornado
      • Chemy Slash:
      • Apparebushido (Daybreak Version): Gotchard Daybreak sends a powerful flame slash attack.
      • Tornado Arrow:
      • Mechanichani (Daybreak Version): Gotchard Daybreak fires an energy arrow that takes the form of Mechanichani's claws and fires lasers from both claws.
  • Hero of Another Story: His parts list all but indicates he's been Gotchard Daybreak for a very long time, long enough to capture all 100 Daybreak Chemies and have his armor grow stronger from age and combat experience. He's a future version of Houtaro, who has been fighting Geryon for ten years.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Spelled "Daybreak" on the official website, but "Daybrake" in an official magazine.
  • Irony: This version of Gotchard has a much more vibrant color scheme than the normal version, yet he's the more level-headed and demure of the pair.
  • Last-Name Basis: In #17, he calls Rinne by her last name before correcting himself. As he's Houtaro's future self, it's not surprising that he corrects himself to avoid outing his own identity.
  • Meaningful Name: This Rider is from a different world and is colored like a sunrise; his existence begins at the dawn of a new era.
  • Mysterious Protector: He first arrives just in time to save Houtaro from the Orochi Malgam, and drops cryptic advice to the young alchemist Rider whenever they interact.
  • Older and Wiser: Daybreak is a seasoned veteran compared to the normal Gotchard, who's still very much a rookie. Justified since he is an older Houtaro.
  • Palette Swap: Gotchard Daybreak is an inversion of Gotchard Steamhopper, inverting the blue and orange parts while his Gotchardriver is red instead of orange.
  • Playing with Fire: He and his Chemies are all flame-enhanced, and he can activate a powerup explicitly called "Fire Gotchard".
  • The Power of the Sun: More symbolic than literal, but the fact that he has fire-based powers that carry the title "Daybreak" invokes sun imagery.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: He's Hotaro from a Bad Future, trying to change the past to prevent it. It's implied he's at least somewhat succeeded in 18, as his past self creating his own Gotcharigniter diverged the future to at least a degree.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Hotaro learns the identity of this mysterious savior through one word: "Gotcha".
  • Sword and Gun: This Rider wields both the Gotcharge Gun and Gotchatornado at the same time, whereas the regular Gotchard only used them individually.
  • Time Travel: #18 confirms he is able to travel through time through ambiguous use of Daybreak Timelord's abilities.

    Rinne Kudo/Kamen Rider Majade

Portrayed by: Reiyo Matsumoto (live), Ayumi Shimozono (suit)
Young Rinne portrayed by: Liliana Ōno

I will change with this one word. The name... is Kamen Rider Majade!

Houtaro's classmate at Furasu High. She seems like your typical model student — well-mannered and with excellent grades, but is in fact a student of the secret Alchemists' Academy. She later becomes Kamen Rider Majade using the Alchemisdriver and the help of the Fantastic and Cosmic Chemies.

Tropes applying to her in general

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krgot_rinne.jpg
The Female Rookie Alchemist

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: For all the bitterness she felt towards her father for running off with the Chemies, the news of his death completely breaks her. #15 has her understand that what her father did was wrong, but he did it so that he could prevent a future disaster. #25 has her hugging her father all while she "says" she hates him.
  • Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Seina's Betty being a Defrosting Ice Queen who trades snark towards Hotaro.
  • Blind Obedience: She puts the laws of Alchemy above everything else, constantly reminding Houtaro to do the same. This is also the source of the friction between her and her father, who broke the rules to do the right thing. However, she has some limits to some of the laws, like when Minato wiped Boruto's memories in #6 despite Boruto also being an alchemist. After Atropos' latest attempts at breaking her, however, Rinne loosened up significantly, accepting that while her father broke the rules, it was to stem the arrival of a tragedy. #19 has her eventually decide to leave the Alchemists' Academy once and for all.
  • Blue Is Heroic: While not nearly to the same extent as Gotchard, Rinne is associated with the Fantastic and Cosmic Chemies, whose cards are read by the Academy's systems in a deep blue and bright cyan respectively.
  • Brains and Brawn: She's the Brains to Hotaro's Brawn, being an intelligent alchemist who supports him in combat with her alchemy abilities.
  • Break the Cutie: She does not take learning about her father's death well but gradually moves on from it, especially in light of how he's still alive if the Winter movie is accurate..
  • Character Development: Starts opening up more after her heart-to-heart with Hotaro and even chastizes why he didn't bring Hopper1 to the Kyoto trip in card form, understanding the bond the Chemy has with him. #15 has her deciding to shake off Atropos' words and putting faith in her father's actions, vowing to become stronger to support Hotaro like he has to her. Finally she decides that she's going to fight by her own rules instead of blindly following the Alchemist's Academy and their head-in-the-sand denial.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She doesn't start out as one, but Rinne is quite notably more irked than usual when Seina returns to Houtarou's life.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: She used to be a happy and enthusiastic girl who wanted to follow in her father's footsteps; she closed herself off from other people after her father's supposed betrayal of the Alchemists. Houtarou's kindness helps her recapture some of her former joyful nature with #15 having her accept that what her father did was necessary to prevent a worse disaster.
  • Daddy's Girl: The second episode reveals she was very close to her father growing up, so it stings her the most when he ran away with the Chemies and it stings her even more when she's told he died protecting Hotarou. She eventually learns to understand her father's actions in #15. Upon seeing her father alive, she tearfully hugs him.
  • Declaration of Protection: After forgiving her father and becoming Kamen Rider Majade, she vows to no longer be a helpless princess and to fight alongside Hotaro.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: While aloof and a bit condescending to Hotaro at the start, she later softens up when he mentions why he wants to work at his mother's restaurant and sees his resolve to protect Chemies. This grows to the point she stands up to Supana when he wants to take Wrestler G for himself.
  • Deuteragonist: Cements her role as secondary protagonist after becoming Kamen Rider Majade, as she learns to understand why her father kidnapped the Chemies and to forgive him for it.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father went missing 10 years ago. She later learns that he was found in the Ouroboros world and killed protecting Hotaro. However Atropos hints that he is still alive and the Winter Movie has him appear to give his daughter the Alchemist Ring that allows her to transform into Maljade.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: After becoming Maljade in the Winter Movie, she confesses to Hotaro that it took a massive drain in her alchemical reserves, meaning that she can't transform again so easily. She returns in #19 due to the Necessary Drawback of the Gotchard Igniter and rediscovering her own resolve.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In contrast to Houtarou getting the question about the Renaissance completely wrong, she answers the same question accurately — though she goes on a tangent regarding alchemy that Minato is forced to halt lest she give away her secret. Her second moment is when she transforms into an alchemist to fight a barreling steam train, believing that all Chemys are evil and must be stopped. However, she does this by being aggressive to Hotaro and pushing him away, believing he is not capable of being of aid.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even with her law-abiding ways, she's notably uncomfortable with Minato's decision to erase Boruto's memories. She's also saddened when Asahi accepts to have his memories wiped of his time with Wrestler G. She later finds utter disgust in Minato siding with the villains.
  • Foil:
    • To Houtarou, being technical and intellectual in contrast to his unorthodox methods and physicality. Their last names also mirror one another, his containing the character for "one" (ノ瀬/Ichinose) and hers containing the character for "nine" (堂/Kudo), when combined shows the number 10, a requirement for matches in the Gotchardriver. Hotaro is always by Rinne's side supporting her, while in return, Rinne vows to support him. This is also Foreshadowing, as being the second half to Hotaro means she's the second rider.
    • To Supana as well. Supana doesn't care about the Chemies except that he's hunting them down. Rinne is more neutral about the Chemies as a whole, but she gradually learns to accept Hotaro's mindset over them. And while Supana is a total jerkwad to Hotaro — like striking him with a bokken solely because Hotaro refused to handover the Gotchardriver and smacked Hopper1 down — Rinne warms up to him and treats him as a friend. They also use different Chemies to transform into Kamen Riders. Supana uses Machine, and later Occult, both having darkened appearances while Rinne uses the Fantastic and Celestial Chemies, both associated with light.
  • Hidden Depths: #9 reveals she is both a fangirl for The Shinsengumi, and comically enthusiastic about haunted houses.
  • Hypocrite: Rinne refuses to both bring Kajiki into the affairs of Alchemists or raid the Academy because it's against the rules. Renge is quick to point out that Rinne keeping her ring is also against the rules, so why is she letting that pass?
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Admits to Atropos in #19 that she wanted friends when she was younger and uses that to connect to how Atropos herself wanted a friend.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: As with Houtaro, her surname has been rendered as "Kudo", "Kudou" or "Kudoh".
  • I Wished You Were Dead: She tells Hotaro that she was going to really let her father have it if he ever returned...and then she learns that he died saving Hotaro.
  • Karmic Jackpot: By saving Atropos from being struck by the Cerberus Malgam, especially since Atropos tried to pull this trick on her earlier, Rinne regains the ability to transform into Majade.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: In the first episode, she declares how she's going to stop the Chemy that's after her and Houtarou... which is a humongous, sentient steam train. Houtarou calls her out immediately after.
  • Morality Pet: She serves as one to Supana, who acts downright nice to her as opposed to being aloof at best and disdainful at worst to everyone else. However, that doesn't mean she'll let him walk over her, as she stands defending Hotaro when Supana wants to take Wrestler G for himself, which works well that Supana backs off as he refuses to fight her. However, it's later revealed that Supana is tasked to keep an eye on her to see what her father was really planning, so she doesn't really have any influence on him.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: In #9, she's the only one between her, Hotaro, and Kajiki, who laughs at the haunted house they enter. She takes Kajiki, along with Renge and Sabimaru, into the same haunted house in #10 while having a blast. This pops up again in #28, where her reaction to the yokai ostensibly haunting the village of Renge's grandmother is peals of laughter.
  • Not So Above It All: She lets herself have fun on the Kyoto trip, laughing at her experience in the haunted house and asking Hotaro to photograph her as one of the Shinsengumi.
  • Punny Name:
    • Her first name most likely stems from samsara ("rinne" in Japanese), tying into the series' alchemy theme and its associations with life.
    • Rinne sounds like "ring", which is what alchemists of Gotchard uses to cast alchemy. Fittingly, she's first introduced with a close-up of her alchemy ring.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The ring for Majade is orange, which is contrast to the blue, green, and red for the Alchemist's Academy, which symbolizes her leaving the Academy and fighting by her own rules. Plus it was specifically given to her by her father, not the Academy itself.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: Rinne's rigorous alchemist training has left her with so little time to herself that she gets overwhelmed by the mere act of ordering food at a cafe, noting how unfamiliar it is to her.
  • Save the Villain: She heals Atropos in #19 despite the brat having taunted her for causing Sabimaru to become Kamen Rider Dread and forcefully suffocated her. This ends up allowing her to transform into Majade once more.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: In #19, she tells Atropos that she's not going to follow the "rules" of the Alchemist's Academy any longer and decides to make up her own rules on what to do from now on.
  • Ship Tease: With Hotaro; see Foil for more details. #30 hints even more strongly at this with her jealousy towards Seina.
  • Sinister Suffocation: Atropos forces this upon her in #15 by making Rinne choke herself to death while being helpless to save Gotchard.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Atropos' loneliness of wanting friends is a similar experience Rinne's own Friendless Background, leading her to save Atropos.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: She and Hotaro grow closer after she tries one of his bentos at his mother's restaurant, both vowing to become stronger to protect one another.
  • Technician vs. Performer: She's the Technician to Houtarou's Performer, relying on her technical expertise in alchemy to help out in recovering the Chemies.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After coming to terms with her father's decisions to take the Chemies, she ends up becoming a Kamen Rider in the Winter Movie.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Aloof towards Hotaro at the start, she gradually shows a kinder side to him thanks to his influence.
  • True Blue Femininity: The gem of her first ring is blue and she wears a blue alchemist robe.
  • Underestimating Badassery: In #1, she pushes Hotaro out of the way because she believes he's incapable of stopping SteamLiner. She changes her tune when she sees him pushing her to safety and transforming into a Kamen Rider.

Tropes exclusive to her as Kamen Rider Majade

Alchemisdriver voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi, Haru Shinonome

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/majade.jpg
G-G-G-Gotchanko! Prominence horse! SunUnicorn!
  • Anime Hair: Rather interestingly, the Majade head invokes this, which given that it's an alchemical change to Rinne's body isn't too surprising. In the default SunUnicorn, she has two orange strands that resemble twintails at the back. However this design aesthetic is more clearly noticeable in MoonCerberus where the colored strands are on the sides of the head and resemble a bobcut, while the Cerberus heads themselves look like hairbuns. Though given this form is meant to resemble a martial artist, the style makes sense.
  • Anti-Magic: Uses Unicon's light to cancel unwanted alchemical influence. A solid example of this is in her series debut where she undoes the alchemical transmutation of Atropos's arm and returns it to normal.
  • Badass Armfold: Pulls it off in the new intro sequence and the new key visual.
  • Badass Cape: Majade has a long and thin cloak behind each of her shoulder pads.
  • Barefisted Monk: Much like Jeanne before her, her base form of SunUnicorn offers no weapons of its own. However between the Chemy Riser, and both Unicon and The Sun to augment her blows with either light or shining flames respectively, she also is in no need of any.
  • Blue and Orange Contrast: While Majade is almost completely white, the second-most noticeable color on the suit is a vibrant shade of orange, contrasting Gotchard's tendency to favor blue in his overall color scheme. The Majade suit itself has a blue undersuit, but the shade used is so dark that it has to be seen in direct lighting to be visible.
  • Breaking Old Trends: In prior entries, the most significant slot a female Rider could get was either a tertiary Rider or below. Majade is a secondary Rider, a docket that previously only had male Riders.
  • Combat Stilettos: The Majade costume has very noticeable high heels on the boots.
  • Finishing Move: Like Gotchard, Majade can execute a finisher with the Alchemisdriver by scanning her ring once or twice on the scanning device. Single scan finishers are known as Novas.
    • Sununicorn Nova: Majade scans the High Alchemist Ring once, then pushes and pulls the levers on her driver. Then, she delivers multiple kicks that form several Milky Way projections, then delivers one final kick as the enemy is bombarded by unseen kicks before exploding.
    • Mooncerberus Nova: Scanning once and then pulling and releasing the levers, Majade runs toward her target, and after leaping at them, hits with a flurry of bicycle kicks, before finishing with a powerful side kick.
  • Good Wears White: Majade is a heroic Kamen Rider in a white suit, which contrasts both Gotchard and Valvarad's darker undersuits.
  • Kick Chick: As seen in the new intro sequence given in #17, Majade tends to favor striking the enemy with her heels when she has to get up close and her finishing moves are rapid kicks.
  • Light Is Good: Majade's armor is a predominately-white suit formed from the light-themed Chemies Unicon and The Sun, and Rinne is just as heroic as Houtarou is.
  • Multiform Balance: Adheres to it even moreso than Gotchard. Outside of the head, gem color and a few other touches, Majade generally stays the same compared to Gotchard's more extensive changes. However this is balanced out by each form having specific roles to play in combat, making each useful if the situation aligns.
    • SunUnicorn is the default and the Jack of All Trades form doing nothing overtly well but taking advantage of Rinne's knowledge of combat and the alchemical abilities of its component Chemys. Given it's half formed via Unicon, it's also the lone form that can wield it's Anti-Magic abilities, making it the vital one if something needs to be undone or weakened for another of the Riders to be able to go in for a Finishing Move.
    • MoonCerberus is the power form, but given it's also light and extremely fast it comes off as a Lightning Bruiser. Neminemoon can adjust gravity to that of the moon around both Majade and her opponent making the latter unable to move outside of floating helplessly, while Majade can get even lighter and thus move faster due to this. Meanwhile Yoacerberus grants heavy clawed gauntlets on both arms for powerful blows and slashes, which when combined with the aforementioned Gravity Master powers makes this form very good for fighting physical opponents, and very dangerous to fight against.
  • The Power of the Sun: One of the Chemies used for Majade is literally called "The Sun''.
  • Power Source: Given it's a literal Sun on a smaller scale, The Sun acts as this for both Unicon, and Majade, giving her a nearly perpetual energy source and Unicon a source to use for its own light based abilities. To counterbalance how obviously broken this is, fighting as Majade burns through huge amounts of alchemical energy so although it is infinite, Rinne's own natural reserves certainly aren't.

    Supana Kurogane/Kamen Warrior (I)/Rider Valvarad

Portrayed by: Yasunari Fujibayashi (live); Yasuhiko Imai [episodes 3-6], Yuji Nakata [episode 8-] (suit)
Teenage Supana portrayed by: Yumeto Takahashi

Those without virtue will be vanquished by me, Valvarad.

An A-class alchemist and graduate of the Alchemists' Academy. He believes that Chemies are tools that were created by humans and are incapable of free will, which puts him into a rivalry attitude towards Houtarou. He created the Valvarad system to capture the Chemies at the behest of the Union of Alchemists, but eventually upgraded the identity into a fully-fledged Kamen Rider.

Tropes applying to him in general

The Elite Alchemist

  • The Ace: Appears to be top-notch at everything, including — but not limited to — being a skilled warrior and a Supreme Chef.
  • Advertised Extra: Downplayed. While Supana isn't a minor character by any means, he is very much Out of Focus compared to Houtarou and Rinne, only making a token appearance in most of the early episodes to be antagonistic or aid in fighting the Monster of the Week. It's only in the third arc when he begins to get more screentime.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Starts pleading for someone to save his parents from being killed by Geryon. He even begs Hotaro for help, which is something the normally aloof Supana would never do.
  • All There in the Manual: Supana being repeatedly set up for failure throughout the first quarter of the series is foreshadowed in Valvarad's parts list, which basically calls it a failing machine hopelessly outclassed by the Gotchardriver.
  • Aloof Ally: He's only allied with Hotaro and his friends out of his own self interests. Even after going through some Character Development, he refuses to lift a finger. Case in point, in #23 he basically says that Hotaro is on his own in regards to Zukyunpire.
  • Anti-Hero: While he certainly has some noble qualities to him and in the end is a good guy, he is still an aloof jerk towards others especially Hotarou and who sees Chemies as tools.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: His being a top graduate of the Academy, along with creating an entirely new Rider/Warrior system single-handedly has given him quite the ego. However as Hotaro and Rinne outclass him by becoming full-on Kamen Riders and he constantly keeps eating defeat after defeat, he starts losing it upon falling behind in terms of strength.
  • Baritone of Strength: Averted with Supana himself, whose voice is only slightly deeper than Houtarou's, but played absolutely straight with his equipment. This applies to most of his Chemies as well, with the first four he uses as a Kamen Rider (Machwheel, Daiohni, Gutsshovel, and Jyamatanoorochi) having baritones that could easily pass for Evil Sounds Deep.
  • Beneath the Mask: Underneath his dismissive, arrogant behavior is a young boy who's seen his parents die with his own eyes and accordingly has difficulty dealing with the event. Kyoka's measures to protect him from his trauma, while well-meaning, were ultimately half-measures that only repressed his trauma, which has disastrous results when Supana is forced to relive his worst experience again.
  • Berserk Button: Threatening Kyoka is a very quick way to get him to demolish you, in or out of Rider form. Given she's effectively his surrogate mother, this is an entirely justified reaction.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Implied, he can actually fully finish one of Hotaro's meals, if his comment about it being disgusting is genuine.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: He has some degree of honor, but his idea of "virtue" includes not helping Houtarou when he's in trouble simply because he is an "amateur." He advises a woman not to let vengeance consume her after nearly becoming a Malgam, but pays no attention to how his own actions and words could actually drive someone to do just that, in the case of Boruto.
  • Boring, but Practical: #6 has him use simplistic abilities that serve him well. In contrast to Hotaro's elaborate spread for breakfast, he basically makes a purple omurice. In his exam against Boruto, who is throwing an entire armory at his face, Supana just crushes said armory into a giant ball and throws it back into Boruto's gut.
  • Broken Ace: Skilled warrior, high-leveled alchemist, and good cook...but he's also hampered by arrogance at how he's unable to be on par with Hotaro and Rinne due to his disdain towards Chemies. And this is before everything revolving around #20.
  • Break the Haughty:
    • A minor case, but after being worfed by Kamen Rider Dread, Supana has found himself watching how Hotaro and Rinne have now outclassed him as Kamen Riders and how he's been unable to catch up to them. He angrily wonders about why they managed to do so while training himself in #20.
Supana: [while training himself] Why...?! What makes him different from me?! Even Rinne Kudo is now...! GRRRAAAAH!!!
    • #20 proves to be the major case of this, first with the above-mentioned wondering, and next when he's physically and mentally broken by Geryon and the Angel Malgam's manipulations. The fact that he's crying out to Hotaro whom he keeps treating like dirt, is another sign of his dismissive attitude collapsing on top of him.
  • Character Catchphrase:
  • Color Motif: Black. His last name means "Black Metal", his attire is a black leather jacket with matching black pants, black hair, and has a rare alchemical power called the Black Flames. This shows off his stance as the rival towards Hotaro and his darkening mindset as the series goes on, in contrast to Rinne becoming a white Kamen Rider.
  • Cradle of Loneliness: Twice in #21 does he crawl towards the Alchemy rings of his deceased parents while weeping.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Geryon murdered his parents when he was still a young child, and he would've been the madman's next victim if Kyoka hadn't stepped in.
  • Defrosting Ice King: To Hotaro, somewhat, after becoming a Kamen Rider. He's less rude and more or less recognizes Hotaro not so much as an equal, but as an adequate Rider in his own right who he has no qualms fighting alongside. Likewise, this attitude is also directed to the Chemies, namely his Vehicle and Occult Chemies, with whom he shares a mutual respect.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Gotchard's parts list has the series start with the audience knowing that Supana's view on the Chemies is not only objectively incorrect but also dragging him down, as befriending them is required to draw out their true power. Fittingly, Gotchard is a chimeric being that perfectly fuses Hotaro and the Chemies together, while Valvarad is a plain hunk of metal.
      • Subverted as of Episode 21. Supana's determination to remain true to his parents' hopes after struggling with his hatred of Geryon for killing them causes Gekiocopter, Gutsshovel, Jyamato no Orochi, and Daiohni to join him willingly out of respect. Madwheel in particular reforges itself into Machwheel after synchronizing with Supana's resolve.
    • He's introduced trying to take the Gotchardriver for himself, believing he can use it better than Hotaro. Because of how it works, using it in place of the Valvarusher would not be an improvement for him whatsoever, and might even be worse if Supana can't get a grip on Wild Form.
    • Because of their nature and his general dismissive views on Chemies in general, Supana is completely incapable of using the powers of the Level 10 Chemies.
    • As prideful as he is about creating the Valvarad system, he ends up ditching it for the more powerful Kamen Rider system used by the person he sees as inferior, and the Valvarusher is demoted to simply being a weapon.
  • Emerald Power: His alchemist ring is green in contrast to Hotaro and Rinne's blue rings. Later switches to a deep violet once he firmly sets onto his own path.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first scene that isn't ominously watching Houtarou from afar is him entering the dojo where Houtarou is, attempting to intimidate him into giving up the Gotchardriver, striking back at Hopper1 when it retaliates for how he looks down on Chemies, then finally attacking Hotaro with a bokken when the younger alchemist protects Hopper1 from a beatdown. His second moment comes in Episode 4, when he defeats the Malgam stalking Rinne and hands her a Chemy, showing that he has a softer side only for Rinne.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Supana may be loose when it comes to the morals of others, but he still tries to adhere to some principles. It was for this reason that he disapproves of Licht Kugimiya using a spy investigation to discredit Houtarou as a Rider, despite Supana treating him as nothing but a Heroic Wannabe.
    • Backwater views on Chemies aside, he at least acknowledges that the Level 10 Chemies are impossible to forcibly subjugate, and dismisses the alchemist council for their Skewed Priorities.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Heavily downplayed with evil, but the fact that Houtarou, who he sees as an inferior and foolish wannabe failure, managed to soundly defeat the Dark Sisters as a Malgam and as Dread, who collectively handed him his thoroughly whupped ass on a silver platter, left him in disbelief. He becomes more shocked when he sees Rinne transforming into a Kamen Rider, this frustration at seeing these two lesser alchemists outclassing him reaching a boiling point in #20.
  • Foil:
    • To Houtarou. Both are alchemists trying to reclaim all 101 Chemies, marked by each having a ring in hand. However, the two vary in status, ideals, and personality.
      • First, Houtarou is basically a rookie alchemist (he has the beginner blue ring) while Supana is an elite graduate (as his ring is green).
      • Houtarou is idealistic about befriending the Chemies in contrast to Supana dismissing them as tools.
      • The younger Houtarou is outgoing and friendly to others and aims to be an ideal hero while the older Supana is serious, aloof, and hardly polite, though he's far more hostile to Houtarou, dismissing him as a wannabe.
      • This even extends to their Transformation Trinkets and Rider forms: Houtarou's gear is the GotcharDriver, a driver which lets him use two Chemy Cards at the same time and grants him versatility with every form he takes; his Rider form is also a neat, shiny integration of colors, including black. Supana on the other hand uses a brutish greatsword-rifle hybrid to transform into Valvarad, a rough, patchwork-like armored form which only uses one Chemy Card at a time while all parts gained from other Chemy Cards afterwards gets "grafted" on. Supana does get a fully-fledged Rider form, but it's more rough and spiky than Houtarou's akin to his aloof nature.
      • Their relationships to Rinne are polar opposites. Hotaro is nice and well-meaning, always there to support Rinne when she needs it without asking for anything in return. Supana doesn't have any close connections to her, gives her Chemy Cards as a gift, and only is close to her so his boss can figure out what her dad is hiding.
      • Even their cooking styles are different. Hotaro mixes and matches foods while Supana goes for something simplistic.
    • He is also a foil to Rinne. While both ended up being aloof towards Hotaro, Rinne takes the time to open herself up to him and develop as a person who will fight by her own rules, granting her the power to transform into a Kamen Rider. Supana closes himself off towards the wannabe alchemist and thus never grows as a person and initially turns into a Malgam before becoming Kamen Rider Valvarad.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Despite being regarded as The Ace, he doesn't appear to be as highly thought of by the Academy's students themselves given how he looks down on them. At best, some are rather indifferent to him like Rinne or Minato (implied to have been under orders to have him join his class), while at worst, he's despised enough as in more than even Houtarou, that some are willing to become Malgams to take him down (i.e Boruto in #6). Yet despite this, Hotaro vows to save Supana after he turns into a Malgam.
  • Full-Name Basis: Tends to address Rinne in this manner.
  • Harmful to Minors: Seeing your parents turn into ash in front of you would probably mess you up.
  • Hypocrite: Supana likes to talk the talk but his actions are always going against his ideals.
    • Openly states after Sabimaru's transformation that he usually wouldn't attack when a hostage was involved, even though Sabi is being forced to fight against his will. Slightly justified, in that he knows that because Sabi isn't the one behind the wheel, there is a very real chance that Dread would kill them all.
    • He also did just that when Boruto unambiguously took Rinne hostage. Bonus points, since she is the one person he treats with any degree of respect or consideration.
    • He also lashes out and lays the blame squarely on Houtarou for the way the fight against Dread turned out, even though he was put out of commission in seconds while Houtarou lasted way longer than he did and only lost because Dread took a cheap shot. In addition, Houtarou's Heroic Second Wind with the Exgotchalibur is the only reason they made it out of that situation alive.
    • Also, his objectification of the Chemies leans toward this as well. He dismisses them as tools, bordering on abominations that should never have existed, but he relies more on them and their powers rather than his own skills in alchemy.
    • He prevents a Malgam from forming in #6 and tells the intended user to give up on the idea of vengeance. #20 shows that a big factor in his inability to become a Rider is due to him wanting revenge for his parents (not that he remembered that when giving the prior advice), which makes him vulnerable to turning into a Malgam as a result.
    • He hates Hotaro for being a wannabe alchemist who can't do alchemy. Says the guy who's only peformed Alchemy once (see below).
  • I Owe You My Life: Kyoka saved his life ten years before the start of the series, which is why he readily assists her in her investigation into Fuga Kudo. This also explains his interest in Rinne; as Fuga's daughter she would be naturally the most important lead in the investigation. #20 expands on this. Supana had seen his parents die by the hands of Geryon, with Kyoka saving him from being Geryon's next victim and then raising him as her son, but constantly erased his memories of seeing his parents die.
  • Iconic Item:
    • He specializes in only Vehicle-type Chemies, reflecting how he only sees them as machine-like tools and not sentient beings with their own free will. As such the Valvarusher only identifies Vehicle-type Chemies individually by name, while all other Chemies are generically referred to by their type.
    • As Kamen Rider Valvarad, the Occult Chemies are added to his arsenal, using Daiohni to start up the Valvaradriver and the other cards to perform form changes. Madwheel has also evolved into Machwheel at this point, making the Chemy uniquely his.
  • Ignorance Is Bliss: #20 has him happy to see his parents again until Kyoka reveals the truth they've been dead for a decade and she kept erasing his memories to ensure he didn't remember.
  • Ineffectual Loner: His objectification of the Chemies means he's incapable of using their power as efficiently as Gotchard. In addition, he has absolutely no hope of ever being able to utilize the power of Level Number 10 Chemies as long as he holds this viewpoint since their power can only be given freely to someone who is acknowledged by the Chemies themselves.
  • Informed Attribute: Is said to be an alchemist on a higher rank than Rinne. Show of hands, how many times has he actually used alchemy outside of a flashback in #6? And no, using Chemy Cards as Valvarad doesn't count.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Mutt/Feral Dog" by Lachesis.
  • Jerkass: Supana's default demeanor is rude and dismissive, and aside from small moments of kindness he's more likely to blow someone off at best or outright attack them at worse. He also wouldn't care less if his actions resulted in someone's despair and only responded to such when it became malice that would create a Malgam, not to mention that he's quick to leave Hotaro and his friends high and dry or even blame them for failing when he never bothers to help. This results in almost none of the main alchemist cast tolerating him for longer than necessary, and his dehumanizing and objective views of them don't endear him to the Chemies either.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Supana was being harsh over telling Hotaro that Chemies are tools, but he's not wrong that Chemies aren't doing anything to actively work with humans. Case in point, Apparebushido had a stubborn personality and initially tried to attack Hotaro as a katana.
    • He points out in #12 that the Academy's fun hunts for the Chemies is not enough to save them should the Dark Sisters get serious and that they almost died because they don't have other ways to defend themselves.
  • Jerkass to One: While Supana is hardly polite to anyone, he's especially hostile and dickish to Houtarou, repeatedly belittling him for being an amateur, dismissing his beliefs regarding Chemies as naïve, and going so far as to assault him with a bokken for refusing to give up the Gotchardriver. Unlike Houtarou, though, he doesn't even bother attempting to befriend him and constantly continues to see him as inferior.
    • Inverted with Kyoka, as due to her saving and later raising him after Geryon murdered his parents, she's the one person who Supana even comes close to showing any basic respect.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Emphasis on jerk. Supana is fighting against evil and can be courteous to Rinne when he needs to be, though you'd hardly know it given how he acts and how quick he is to blame others and never getting involved unless it intersts him. Hotaro even lampshades how he's supposed to be a good guy given his abrasiveness.
  • Kick the Dog: Spits in Hotaro's face that Chemies are nothing but tools, smacks Hopper1 to the side when it takes exception to his words, and was ready to squish the bug Chemy with his bokken if Hotaro didn't take the blow to the back just in time.
  • Logical Weakness: While Supana is much harder to beat than a typical alchemist (he's an effective swordsman and serviceable marksman in addition to his alchemy skills), the Valvarad system's patchwork nature means that it pales in comparison to the full-on Rider systems used by Gotchard and Dread, and he can be forced into a stalemate against someone who matches his level in combat. As such, Kamen Rider Dread's raw power combined with a host possessing a lot of combat experience can take him out in an overly-LOPSIDED one-sided fight.
  • Magic Knight: A big difference between Supana and most of the other senior Alchemists is that the former is not overly reliant on alchemy in combat. As such, his skill with a sword and firearm makes him a tough opponent even when not transformed as Valvarad.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name comes from "spanner", a type of wrench with an adjustable grip, while his last name is Japanese for "black metal".
  • Mysterious Past: Compared to Hotaro and Rinne, Supana's past hasn't been elaborated on. All that is known is that Kyoka saved him a decade ago and he's loyal to her. #20 has his past as a major focus. Geryon killed his parents and Kyoka had to suppress the memory of that.
  • Never My Fault:
    • In general, Supana always likes blaming Hotaro for stuff that went wrong even though he never gets involved.
    • Supana drops all of the blame for the group's first clash with Dread and the Dark Sisters on Houtarou, ignoring that he was even less effective than Houtarou was (Dread took Valvarad out almost immediately, and Gotchard lasted four times as long before biting the dust).
    • Played for Horror in #20. When Supana learns the truth about his past and the memories Kyoka erased, he fails to realize how dangerous the power of the Black Flames is, and believes that he could have saved his parents and become stronger like Houtaro and Rinne. It's this flawed mindset that leads to him giving into his rage and becoming the Wheel Malgam again.
  • Noble Demon: He's not a full-on villain, but even with his dickish demeanor Supana still upholds himself to a certain standard; even if it is an opinion he'd agree with, he'll shoot it down if the statement was made by crossing one too many lines, as Licht found out when he tried discrediting Houtarou using a spy investigation.
  • Number of the Beast: All three cards Supana uses to transform in the series (Madwheel, Machwheel, and Daiohni) have a level number of six.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Supana is an aloof jerkass who is barely phased by anything. But #20 has him covered in chains, blood, and screaming in absolute agony over the machinations of the Angel Malgam. He also asks Hotaro for help, which is a 180 from how he hates the wanna-be alchemist and his naivety.
Supana: Ichinose... Kudo... Help... HELP ME!!!
  • Pet the Dog: Despite his aloof attitude towards Hotaro and Chemies, Supana can be nice if need be.
    • He allows Hotaro to use his motorcycle to carry Rinne to safety in #4.
    • After preventing a woman from becoming a Malgam in #6, in retaliation for her boyfriend dumping her, he sincerely tells her to not devote her life to vengeance and to move forward.
    • In #8, he gives a sincere compliment to Isaac when it comes to searching for Saboneedle.
    • He actually catches Houtarou about to collapse from exhaustion after defeating the Orochi Malgam in #16 and congratulates him on a job well done.
  • Personality Powers: Supana initially starts out exclusively using Vehicle Chemies, referencing his tendency to coldly rebuff anything outside of his usual strategies, much like a machine built specifically for a single purpose. The addition of the Occult Chemies to his arsenal symbolizes him slightly opening himself up to Houtarou's group, and represents machinery that has more than one function.
  • Plain Palate: Downplayed; Supana doesn't stick to bland foods outright, but his taste in food is noticeably simpler than Houtaro's, reflecting his Boring, but Practical way of fighting. When he cooks on his own, he simply prepares a standard omurice bowl, and refuses Kyoka's offers to add coriander to a bowl of maguro-don (itself a dish consisting only of rice, raw tuna, and maybe some fish eggs or spicy mayonnaise.)
  • Purple Is Powerful: Played with. His civilian outfit has purple trim and his Valvarad armor is magenta, and he is stated to be significantly stronger than Houtarou. That said, as Houtarou and even Rinne catch up to him, it becomes clear that he's not as strong as he first appeared and his kitbashed Valvarad gear is inferior to actual Rider powers. It eventually becomes played straight when he upgrades to being a Rider himself.
  • The Rival: To Houtarou, over their conflicting views regarding the Chemies. #6 even has Houtarou swear to surpass him one day. Unfortunately, by the 3rd arc of the series, Supana is seething in rage over being seen as inferior to the wannabe alchemist.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: #20 has him wanting vengeance on Geryon for killing his parents, to the point he transforms into a Malgam!
  • Rule of Symbolism: His transformation into Wheel Malgam has him tear off his face, which comes after his haughty mask is removed to reveal a screaming boy who must relive his trauma.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Deviating from most recent Second Riders (who're established as main characters at the very start of the series), Supana doesn't appear until the very end of the second episode, and isn't formally introduced until the third.
  • Shadow Archetype: Supana's cold personality, dismissive views on the Chemies, and generally stern attitude all represent how Rinne would've turned out if she didn't defrost thanks to Houtarou. #20 definitely shows the difference between the two — while Rinne has ascended into the majestic white-colored Kamen Rider Majade as she decides to fight by her own rules, Supana has fallen as a Malgam and seeks nothing but vengeance.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Is shown playing chess with Kyoka. #20 reveals that it was a type of therapy Kyoka used to help him channel his rage over Geryon killing his parents.
  • Supreme Chef: He's a capable cook as his purple omurice wins over Hotaro, his mother, and Ryo. Kyoka has him cook some food for her as a way for them to bond during meals.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Even as he wolfs the rest of Houtarou's dish down, he adamantly denies that he found it delicious.
  • There Are No Therapists: Seriously Kyoka, did you ever consider giving Supana therapy instead of constantly rewriting his memories of him seeing his parents die? Justified in this case since going to a therapist would mean revealing the secret of alchemy and Supana's black flame powers means it would be near impossible for someone to approach him.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Of the main characters, Supana is the most aloof, more willing to not get involved if it doesn't interest him, has views on the Chemies that conflict with others like the more idealistic Houtarou, and is more susceptible to being corrupted into becoming a Malgam.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Valvarad's evolution into a fully-fledged Kamen Rider is followed by Supana significantly mellowing out on his stance on Chemies, as he now sees them as living beings. That being said, though, he's still not as willing as Houtarou to befriend them, and currently only lets a select few follow them as long as their wills align with his own. And even after he had begged for Hotaro and Rinne's help in #20, he's back to saying "Screw this, you're on your own" in #23, but he still is a consistent ally to the group.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • A clear sign that Kamen Rider Dread is the biggest threat to the world yet is the fact that a single hit from the damn thing utterly dismantles Valvarad's armor, which considering Supana's skill and power is not a trivial feat.
    • This happens again in #14, only with Lachesis behind the wheel as Kamen Rider Dread. This further establishes the fact that only Houtarou's bonding with Level Number 10 Chemies to create Super Gotchard has a chance of standing up to Dread, especially since Clotho reveals before she uses the Dreadriver that the Abyssal Sisters can draw more raw power out of the Driver than Sabimaru could. #15 also has him silently realizing that Hotaro is now outclassing him in raw power, and #19 also has him feeling frustrated at Rinne's growth as well.
    • #20 has him frustrated over how he is worfed that when he turns into a Malgam, he decides to use this new power to rip Angel Malgam into pieces under the belief that having this power would've made him stronger than Hotaro and Rinne sooner.
  • You Killed My Father: Geryon killed both his parents back in his youth. The memory of that traumatic event left Supana crying in grief when Kyoka found him and she had to constantly erase his memories as well. When Geryon meets him again, he gets the Angel Malgam to conjure an illusion of his parents before strangling them to death, triggering those terrible memories again to the point where Supana turns into the Wheel Malgam and angrily attacks Geryon for the murder.

Tropes exclusive to him as Kamen Warrior Valvarad

Valvarusher voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi

Valvarush! Tune up! Madwheel!

  • Alien Blood: It's implied that if Supana were to receive a cut while in the suit, he'd bleed a substance called "VVR" which is at least one part motor oil.
  • All There in the Manual:
    • Valvarad's spec sheet claims his finishers are actually a weaponized form of Power Incontinence, as twisting the Tighten Scrapper on the Valvarusher briefly removes the safety limiter and forces his body to perform a finisher.
    • Played for horror when the suit is destroyed upon Supana's transformation into the Wheel Malgam. The spec sheet makes the additional claim that Supana transforms his actual body into the suit, meaning that he isn't purging a set armor so much as he is skinning himself alive and wearing what remains as dressings.
  • Anatomy Arsenal: He can equip various weapons dubbed Berserks on his arms via loading Chemy Cards in the Valvarusher.
  • Badass Longcoat: Valvarad has several leg panels that resemble a trenchcoat.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Since he's not a true Rider, Valvarad has an alternate transformation phrase, "Tekkou"note .
  • Can't Catch Up: While Gotchard and the enemies continue to grow in power and abilities throughout the first few episodes, Supana by contrast has yet to use anything other than his usual set of Chemies or the Valvarusher, putting him at a decisive disadvantage whenever he has to fight a much more powerful opponent. His first two matches with Kamen Rider Dread make this a very clear point. Upon seeing Gotchard defeat Clotho, powered by three Chemies, he's in disbelief at how the so-called wannabe hero he despises is now stronger than him. And then there's him learning that Rinne is now a Kamen Rider herself, and he's shown in the beginning of #20 being incredibly pissed off that he is now weaker than the wannabe hero and Fuga's daughter.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: While Gotchard has a wide number of forms he can use with the Gotchardriver, and Majade's alchemy is enhanced by the Alchemisdriver, Valvarad primarily specalizes in Vehicle Chemies, which aren't nearly as versatile as the powers Gotchard and Majade have access to.
  • Cool Sword: His main weapon is the Valvarusher, a cross between a greatsword and rifle shaped like a wrench. It also serves as his Transformation Trinket.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: The left side of his helm is in the shape of a wrench. His attachment parts are similarly only grafted onto one arm.
  • Finishing Move: Dubbed "Valvara Breaks", accessed by triggering the Valvarusher's Tighten Scrapper.
    • Madwheel: Valvarad slashes the air in front of him with the Valvarusher, launching X-shaped sword beams of purple-black energy at the target.
    • Gekiocopter Custom:
      • Valvarad performs a diving sword slash to the target, followed by a barrage of energy blasts from above.
      • Valvarad spins the Copter Berserker's blades and strikes the target.
  • Powers via Weapon: Supana uses the Valvarusher to transform into Valvarad.
  • Weak, but Skilled: While the Valvarad system is nowhere near as strong as the Gotchardriver, the vast skill gap between Houtarou and Supana means that the latter can still put up a good fight. Against an opponent who is as skilled as Supana but more powerful, however, Valvarad almost immediately loses.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Destroyed in #20 as part of Supana's Transformation Horror into the Wheel Malgam, as his rapidly-mutating body tears itself out of the suit.

Tropes exclusive to him as Kamen Rider Valvarad

ValvaraDriver voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krgo_valvarad.png
Gotchanko Burst! Valvarad!
  • Anchored Attack Stance: Turns out that he can do this too, thanks to the waistcoat of pipes he has. They can also allow him to dodge attacks by going off his feet for a moment.
  • Badass Longcoat: Like with his Kamen "Warrior" variation, Kamen Rider Valvarad has costume parts evoking a waistcoat, specifically one of many exhaust pipes.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Just as noticeable as with the Kamen "Warrior" form.
  • Finishing Move: Dubbed the "Valvarad Crash", these are different based on the Chemies being used, and if Supana is going for a physical blow or using the Valvarusher:
    • Valvarad (Valvarusher, Default): Supana gives the engine of the Valvaradriver time to shift into gear and once it does, he literally kicks the Valvarusher straight through his target.
    • Valvarad Custom OrochiShovel: Capturing and binding his target with several of Jyamatanoorochi's heads, Valvarad lifts them skywards before kicking them back to, and into the ground.
    • Valvarad Custom AngelCopter: Valvarad fires off missiles from Gekiocopter that home in on his foes and can either immediately hit them, or force them to try to dodge...thereafter using Angelead's power to create a halo above where he wanted them to be, and firing a blast from its bow causing a literal rain of arrows to hail down on his target and destroying them.
    • He also can slot in the Occult Chemies into the Valvarusher to unleash a Occult Valvara Break channeling their power through the weapon:
      • Daiohni: Generates a giant energy Kanebo club to crush his opponent.
  • Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards: Represents warriors at the point of intersection of this trope. The Valvadriver is able to slowly build up in combo number to a total of 20, whereas Gotchard and Majade need to jump straight from 10 to 20 through GaiaDragon and its components' abilities to ignore the rules of the other belts.
  • Playing with Fire: Valvarad's Kamen Rider form features fire as a notable secondary theme, more specifically the flames from the modified exhausts on certain race cars. Given his inherent flame-based alchemical powers, it's likely those also partially power the form along with his partner Chemies.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel: As a Kamen Rider, Valvarad no longer suffers from his original form's Crippling Overspecialization due to adding Occult Chemies to his arsenal, giving him access to new options that aren't purely physical weapons like his Vehicle Chemies. Furthermore, he's able to equip gear to both arms now, versus one in Warrior form...along with some chest armor.
  • Serial Escalation: Unlike Gotchard, Kamen Rider Valvarad's default combo adds up to 12 total, as it looks for Vehicle/Occult pairings with the same number instead of adding to 10. This extends to Exceedfighter and UFO-X, which would theoretically allow Valvarad to reach a total level of 20, and is permitted by the Valvaradriver.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Unlike Gotchard and Majade both of whom has several forms for whatever may arise, Valvarad still treats his primary form as his only one, equipping different Chemies as Custom armaments in a very Vehicle like fashion. However unlike his original form, they're not only much stronger here given he can actually blend two Chemies together versus one, but their power gets added onto the base provided by Machwheel and Daiohni.
    • Gutsshovel and Jyamatanoorochi-OrochiShovel: Gains two Shovel claw gauntlets on both arms, shaped like several of Jyamatanoorochi's heads embedded into Gutsshovel's claws, and a golden chest plate with the last two. The various heads can come to life and attack the foe in a swarm, and bind them to allow for an easy finisher.
    • Gekiocopter and Angelead-AngelCopter: Gains two ranged weapons on either arm, Angelead 's bow on his right, capable of firing arrows of light, and a miniaturized representation of Gekiocopter on his left. It fires rockets that can target a foe and chase them for as long as is necessary.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Much of the flame-like details on Kamen Rider Valvarad end up resembling demonic spikes (most likely from the fact that Daiohni is used to access this form), though Supana is very much an anti-heroic character at the moment.
  • Strong and Skilled: Supana's high skill level carries over to his new Rider form, which is much more powerful than just using the Valvarusher on its own. The new intro showcases this by having him in a deadlock with Kamen Rider Dread, which previously whupped his ass prior to him gaining the Valvaradriver. His debut is even more stark, as the Angel Malgam cannot land a single hit on him at all, and at one point he actually turns and walks away from them, while still dodging and not looking while doing it.
  • Superior Successor: While Supana is no less skilled than before, his performance improves drastically after switching to the Rider system, with the lighter armor improving mobility and the proper usage of Chemies on Gotchard's level making him a far more powerful opponent.

Allies

    Tamami Ichinose

Portrayed by: Yoko Minamino

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krgot_tamami_8.jpg

Houtaro's mother and the proprietress of Kitchen Ichinose, a teishoku restaurant that specializes in bentos.

  • Actor Allusion: She's gone to meet up with some high school friends in #20, due to them being part of the Yo-yo Research Club, referencing her role in the Sukeban Deka film.
  • Good Parents: Is shown to be nothing less than a loving and supportive mother to Houtaro.
  • Mirror Character: To Kyoka. Both are mother figures towards Houtaro/Supana, with Tamami having a restaurant and Kyoka is a mechanic in the Alchemists' Academy. Tamami is Houtaro's birth mother and Kyoka is a Parental Substitute for Supana after his parents died. Tamami acts like an unofficial Team Mom for Houtaro and his friends, while Kyoka mostly interacts with Supana. Lastly, Tamami is an excellent cook while it's Supana who cooks for Kyoka.
  • Nice Girl: Aside from being a loving mom to Houtaro, she also welcomes Rinne when she asks for a meal in #4.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Is gone from the events of #20 and #21, just as it focuses on Supana's past and heartbreaking despair.

    Mr. Ichinose

Houtarou's father.

    Ryo Kajiki

Portrayed by: Amon Kabe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krgot_ryo.jpg

Houtaro's best friend and a fan of the occult.

  • Ambiguous Situation: In #9, Kajiki asks if he has seen Hopper1 before when it's shown that the two haven't interacted so far. But given how #14 has shown Hotaro befriending the Chemy when they were younger, does this also means Kajiki also has an association with the Chemies but also had his memories wiped?
  • Ambiguously Bi: While he gets along with Hijiri, he becomes very enthusiastic to play the Juliet to Hotaro's Romeo in #30.
  • Badass Bystander: He gets involved with the Battery Malgam/Hijiri fight against Gotchard despite not knowing what's going on.
  • Birds of a Feather:
    • He becomes close to Hijiri as they both had a supernatural phenomena which they wrote to the same magazine.
    • In #15, he becomes friends with Sabimaru after he brings up a theory that Santa is an alien.
  • Cowardly Lion: In #10, despite being clearly terrified, he willingly risks his life rushing into the lighting blasts of a berserk Hijiri in order to try and talk her down.
  • A Day in the Limelight: #9-10 primarily focus on him.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: In #10, Gotchard telling him about seeing Hijiri (as the Battery Malgam) is a "fated encounter" makes him realize that Hotaro is Gotchard. Too bad he forgets it.
  • Foreshadowing: In #9, he has a vague sense of remembering seeing Hopper1 before, just a few episodes prior to the reveal that his best friend also has met Hopper1 in the past.
  • Irony:
    • Is into the supernatural, yet freaks out at a haunted house.
    • Ends up having Chemies migrate toward him, yet he's unable to report it due to constant memory wipes.
    • The one time he ends up being useful in regards to UFO-X, he ends up knocked unconscious.
  • Nerd Glasses: He's basically your quintessential nerd, and appropriately dons a pair of large glasses.
  • Spanner in the Works: He's the one who leads Hotarou to becoming a Kamen Rider when he brings up the rumor of a giant monster, which happened to be Hopper1.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Even though he got his memories wiped at the end of #10, he's allowed half an hour of time with Hijiri and reunites with her some time later.
  • Weirdness Magnet: Chemies somehow tend to congregate near and around him despite having nothing to do with the Alchemists' Academy or the Malgams.
