Wicks checked: 65/185

    open/close all folders

    Wick used as index
  1. Main.Just For Fun: Tropes with names that are rhymes.
  2. Main.Painful Rhyme: Sublime Rhyme is an index of tropes with rhyming names and not the opposite of this trope, so don't get confused.

  8. Headscratchers.Atlantis The Lost Empire: Anyone notice that Rourke (and to a much lesser extent, Helga) is the only character from the film to actually still appear in the merchandise? Why did Disney still want to market him instead of everyone else from the film? They actually did the same thing with the Horned King. OOU rhyme

  10. Main.Apocalypse How: Fire, ice, asteroid... gamma raysThere are just so many ways! OOU rhyme
  11. Main.Christmas Tropes: Joyeux Noel, from Princess Belle. OOU rhyme
  12. Main.Cliche: The term cliché is also sometimes used to refer to a verbal meme. This usage is almost exclusively reserved for old folk sayings. Expressions such as "the early bird gets the worm" and "raining cats and dogs" are examples. Of course, just like internet memes, cliches mutate over time and iterations. One person might say "The early bird gets the worm, but who wants worms?", "The early worm feeds the bird", or "It's raining cats and frogs!" OOU rhyme
  13. Main.Climactic Volcano Backdrop: The climax of The Jungle Book 2 is very similar, with Mowgli, Shanti, Ranjan, Baloo, and Bagheera luring Shere Khan into a volcano where they then throw him into the very bottom of said volcano and crush him with a stone tiger head (although he was still alive even after he was hit by said stone tiger head), just in time for the vultures to arrive... Main.Fake Weakness: In No More Heroes, the boss Bad Girl will sometimes fall to the ground, seeming like a big opening for you to attack... take a single swing at her while she's on the ground and she'll parry, and the game will enter a cinematic of her beating you to death. Seems like a trap for gamers who are used to bosses who periodically leave themselves vulnerable, right? Well, not quite - she actually has two "fall to the ground crying" animations. One leads to the instant kill, and the other genuinely is an opportunity to knock her senseless. The trick is [[spoiler:to check her hands: If one's still on the bat, do not attack]]. OOU rhyme
  17. Main.Glurge: The end of Knowing was blatant Glurge. [[spoiler:Earth fries, everybody dies. OOU rhyme

Shego eventually writes the heist off as more trouble than it's worth due to a mix of Kim's intervention and their parking woes. Truth in Television to be sure. Public parking will cost you $35 a day in the city by the Bay and any cheaper street parking only works IF you are lucky enough to find an available spot. OOU rhyme

  86. Series. The IT Crowd: Denholm Reynholm. Rhyming Names
  87. Series. The Secrets Of Isis: Invocation: Many of Isis's powers came from a magic spells cast as a rhyming couplet. Her most common spell was for flying. Prophecies Rhyme All the Time
Isis: Oh Zephyr Winds which blow on high, lift me now so I can fly!

Bruno: "That's the brunette named Annette."
CJ: [grins] "Wouldn't you just give anything if she was from Tibet?"
  89. Series.Whodunnit 2013: Most of the Killer's clues are rhymes. The finale is stuffed to the gills with them.
  90. Series.Wipeout 2008: "Enter on green, exit on red. Don't let the sweeper arms go over your head." (Overdrive)
  91. Series.Wipeout 2008: Another overdrive one is "Enter on red, exit on green, don't let the sweeper bar nail you in-between".
  92. Series.Wipeout 2008: "If you hesitate, we motivate." (Motivator)
  93. SubvertedRhymeEveryOccasion.Webcomics: Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal: And of course there's strip 547, which provides examples of both Sublime Rhyme of "There once was a man from Nantucket" (if only in a forced way) and this Koan-like gem, under the pretense that rhymes can take the edge off bad news: Limerick
There once was a man from...schmonnerhea
    You have AIDS. Ucket.
  94. Theatre.Charlie And The Chocolate Factory: Fur and Loathing: While originally Veruca's fur coat was Pretty in Mink to emphasize that's she's a Spoiled Brat, here when Mr. Wonka asks if her coat is mink, her father says the coat is made from clubbed baby seals that were "tickled pink".
  95. UsefulNotes.Russian Proverbs And Expressions: Older Than They Think: Repetitio est mater studiorum. The Russian version just added the Sublime Rhyme (the unstressed "ye" and "ya" are almost indistinguishable in standard Russian).
  96. VideoGame.Abomi Nation: Alliterative Name: Food items that aren't Sublime Rhyme tend to be this: Ample Apple, Reset Radish, and Durable Durian. Rhyming Names
  97. VideoGame.Abomi Nation: Food items that aren't Alliterative Names tend to be this: Mana Banana, Brute's Grapefruit, and of course, the Sublime Lime. Loco Coconut and Caring Pear are rhymes on the first syllable rather than the last. Rhyming Names
  98. VideoGame.Azure Striker Gunvolt 2: Painful Rhyme: Copen considers Ghauri's Sublime Rhyme method of "speech" completely intolerable. Rhymes on a Dime

  100. VideoGame.Borderlands 1: Revolvers Are Just Better: It's hard not to like a Revolver with the name Bloody Justice (Unless it does shitty damage or has a ludicrously low ammo count.) or Raw Law. Rhyming Names
  101. VideoGame.Cosmic Break: Unusual Weapon Mounting: Kingyo-chan is probably the best example, mounting a weapon on his head simply because he has nowhere else to put it (he's a fish that's about 70% head/body, the rest is composed of wafer-thin fins). OOU rhyme
  102. VideoGame.Donkey Kong Country: Alliterative Name: Almost all the levels in the Donkey Kong Country series use either this trope or Sublime Rhyme for the level names ("Hot-head Hop", "Gusty Glades," etc) Most of the rest rely on puns; see Viewers Are Geniuses below. Every level in Donkey Kong 64 except DK Isles has an alliterative name.
  103. VideoGame.Final Fantasy X 2: Teleporting Keycard Squad: Lampshaded in-universe. "Find the sphere and the fiends appear" is a credo among sphere hunters.
  104. VideoGame.Fur Fighters: Each and every one of Tweek's Babies has a name that rhymes with the aforementioned character. Rhyme Theme Naming
  105. VideoGame.Golden Sun 1: Egopolis: The city of Lunpa, named after its founder. Also combined with Sublime Rhyme for some cases, a number of location names sound similar with their leaders'-either due to coincidence, translator's choice, or plain laziness in the original names. Rhyming Names
  106. VideoGame. The Fairly Odd Parents Shadow Showdown: In "Get a Clue", calling your fairies in a room with a giant magic loom will start a short Running Gag in which Cosmo tries to name all the words he can think of that rhyme with "loom".
  107. VideoGame. You Dont Know Jack: The Gibberish Questions. It is a matter of opinion how sublime they actually are, which makes them all the more challenging without hints.
  108. VideoGame. You Dont Know Jack: Question 10n in episode 23 of 2011 has words that rhyme with "Gellin", in keeping with the clever Dr. Scholls commercials.
  109. WebVideo.Aventures: Badass Creed: Théo's Inquisitor creed during the season 1 finale.
  110. WebVideo.Video Games Awesome: Their Dr. Seuss build in Minecraft has the gang saying a lot of Dr. Seuss like rhymes, mostly from Fraser, with mixed results
Fraser: What is this? My Minecraft just crashed.
    Beat
What the frig rhymes with crashed?!
  111. WesternAnimation.Billy Dilleys Super Duper Subterranean Summer: Billy Dilley, of course. Rhyming Names

    Nurse: (sing-songy) Uh-uh-uh, there'll be no sodomy, or you'll get a lobotomy!
  113. WesternAnimation.Princess Gwenevere And The Jewel Riders: Dragon Rider: Kale uses a big red dragon named Grimm for transportation. In a quite unusual way, however, as it carries her in a "dragon wagon" that she's sitting in. Grimm comes with a Breath Weapon but uses it very sparsely (and only on command).
  114. WesternAnimation. She Zow: Weaksauce Weakness: If the costume's color is changed from pink, her powers will go on the blink. (yes that was the actual line).
  115. WhoseLine.Tropes S To Z: A couple "Scenes From a Hat" and "Hats" playings returned Dr. Seuss parodies:
Colin: (suggestion: "Dr. Seuss pick-up lines") Could you do it with a friend?/Could you do it end-to-end?/Could you do it on a boat?/Could you do it with my goat?/Could you do it in a tree?/Could you do it while I see?/Hee-hee-hee, hee-hee-hee-hee.
Colin: (wearing The Cat in the Hat hat) I will have you on a boat, I will have you with a goat. On a boat, with a goat, I don't care!
  116. Woolseyism.Anime And Manga: In Soul Eater, to communicate with Lord Death, you fog up a window or mirror and write on it with your finger "42-42-564", pronounced in Japanese "shi-ni-shi-ni-go-ro-shi", which is a homophone for something like "Die, Die, Kill!". Obviously, this doesn't translate into English. The FUNimation dub replaced this with the catchy little rhyme "Call forty-two, forty-two, five-sixty-four, whenever you want to knock on Death's door." This works out nicely, because Lord Death runs a Extranormal Institute and took on a Bunny-Ears Lawyer, Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass alter ego to avoid scaring off any potential pupils.
  117. Wrestling.GLOW: All the time.
"Tina Ferrari, the capitalist dream. She won't look so good face down in the ring! She's thinks she so tough and so strong! I will destroy her, it won't take long."

  120. YMMV.Tango And Cash: Woolseyism: The Latin American translation changes Tango's "Rambo is a pussy" quip to "Rambo es blando" (Rambo is soft) which, while softer in language, do gives it a Sublime Rhyme.
