The Senior Group note
A seven-man Griffon group who serve as the main protagonists of the series.
  • BackToBackBadasses: The boys almost always fight together, side-by-side against whatever evil force is present.

  • Badass Family: In addition to being each other's children's godparents, they certainly view each other as family. And as a team of highly trained guards, this should go without saying.

  • Bash Brothers: They love each other like brothers and are each pretty good on their own, but almost unstoppable when they work as a team. It helps that they have been training together for more than 40 years.

  • Best Friend

  • Best Friends-in-Law: Gruff and Gonsod are set to become this, as Gonsod is engaged to Gruff's sister, Gwyneth, making them future brothers-in-law.
    • Additionally, Guno (Gonsod's grandnephew) and Ginny (Gareth's granddaughter) are dating, making Gareth and Gonsod possible co-grandparents-in-laws in the future.

  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Unlike their parents, all of them are responsible, loving, self-sacrificing, ever-present, open-minded, and supportive parents to their respective children.

  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: OK, so they commit to the bit when it comes to fighting, but they're all big softies away from the battlefield. Especially where their families and their friend group are concerned.

  • Casual Danger Dialogue: All of them (and especially Gilbert) are quite fond of snarking at the antagonists, even throwing some puns at them at times.

  • Childhood Friends: They've known each other since they were young.

  • Combat Parkour: From their training days to their golden years, they are all agile and prone to acrobatics.

  • Ensemble Cast

  • Exhausted Eye Bags: They all sport these when they're older.

  • Experienced Protagonist: This becomes present later on.

  • Family of Choice

  • Genocide Survivor

  • Glory Days: They fought as Griffinstone's royal guards and are quite eager to share stories of their adventures.

  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: No matter what, they have each other's backs.

  • Hidden Weapons: They all have secret weapons.
    • Gideon has tufts of thunder clouds hidden in his armour.
    • Guto's katana has Kogatana knives hidden in its scabbards, which is Truth in Television.

  • Humble Hero: All have gained a lot of self-confidence over the years, but haven't become haughty.

  • Improv Fu: A big part of their training revolves around using nearby objects to their advantage, if worst comes to worst.

  • Insecure Protagonist, Arrogant Antagonist: Each of the Griffons is consistently shown to have individual insecurities and little self-confidence. Their archenemy Arimaspi is completely vain, treasure-hungry, and greedy.

  • Living Out a Childhood Dream: Being in the royal guard has been the boys’ dream since they were kids.

  • Made of Iron: The group and their allies are this. They somehow survive and tolerate heavy blows that would normally kill the average person in real life and emerge unscathed (if not, only a few minor injuries like small cuts, scratches, and scars) back to fighting shape not too long after. It's mentioned that Griffons heal relatively faster than other creatures and that the magic given to them from Guto has given them a minor Healing Factor, albeit one that can be slightly overtaxed after a certain age.

  • No One Gets Left Behind: The Griffons will do whatever it takes to save a teammate.

  • Precious Photo: Mixed with Friendship Trinket. Each keeps a picture of them as cubs.

  • Retired Badass: In their youth, they are the six most skilled guards and the king of Griffinstone.

  • Romantic Wingman: They're this to each other when each has their crush.

  • Seen It All: They've been all over Equestria, and seen many amazing sights. Although, while they do have a great time whenever they go to places, they can get quite bored pretty quickly if there's nothing new.

  • Spin to Deflect Stuff: This is common for all of them.

  • Super Not-Drowning Skills: Non-video game example; they all have demonstrated a decent lung capacity when they're not using any equipment. It's justified, given their water rescue training.

  • The Mentor

  • The Team: It mainly consists of the seven Griffons, but grows over time and extends to their allies as well.

  • True Companions: The Griffons care for each other a lot and their relationship with each other can be described as this. During their training as guards and before their marriages, they all live together in a single castle room, sleeping in bunkbeds and splitting chores, and they all do a lot of things together. The bond between them is strong, to the point where they consider themselves "brothers".

  • Well-Trained, but Inexperienced: They start out as this. While trained in martial arts for years, the bulk of the Griffons' fighting experience comes from training one-on-one. In their first fight, a real street-brawl, they repeatedly get in each other's way and find their opponents to be stronger than expected. While they're trained to fight, they weren't taught to fight as a team. Though as time goes on, they gradually improve.

    Grandpa Gruff

Prince/General Gruffudd "Gruff" Greysen von Gruff-Gardenwarbler I

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grampa_gruff.png
Click here to see him as a teenager
Click here to see him as a cub
The oldest of the seven and leader of the group. He's almost always in control and while Gruff often finds his job challenging, his friends know they can depend on him as much as he does to them.
  • Affection-Hating Kid: As a cub, Gruff is visibly irritated when engaging in group hugs, even with his friends. This becomes very downplayed as he grows older, becoming more lenient towards it over time.

  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Grizel sometimes calls him "Gum-Gum".
    • His friends call him "Gruffy".
    • His grandchildren sometimes call him "Gramps".

  • Big Brother Bully: He, alongside Guto, was mean to Gwyneth when they were younger, gloating about one day becoming a royal guard, mocking her for not finding her place, and playing mean pranks on her. This lasts until she's hit by a pair of electric eels during a hunt (an event that nearly kills her); this plus them having a Jerkass Realisation convinces him and Guto enough to change their ways, subsequently serving as a support system for their sister. It's implied that O.O.C. Is Serious Business, as this behavior towards Gwyneth had only begun during their training.
    • He didn't leave this behind entirely, as in adulthood, Gruff is quite as boastful as can be while lording his gymnastics skills over Gwyneth.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Gruff has this towards his two younger siblings and towards his friends to a milder extent.

  • Bonding over Missing Parents: A way Gruff bonds emotionally with Grizel by sharing the experience of his mother's death.

  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Although he favours the former, he's shown wielding the latter just as professionally.

  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: A very downplayed case; although Gruff can show shades of this, such as telling Greg and Gerson to "keep those claws where [he] can see them", a lot of it comes from him wanting to look out for his kids or mess with them than any aggressiveness. He is overall portrayed as being a lot more accepting and understanding than most other examples of this trope, and is actually ecstatic and nothing but supportive when his children find love.

  • Commonality Connection: First starts to befriend Grizel when they bond over their Missing Moms and they eventually forge a proper friendship, additionally bonding over their shared leadership skills. They become a couple a few years later.

  • Character Catchphrase: "Tough tailfeathers!"

  • Character Development: Initially starts off as confrontational and distrustful due to the hardships he and the other streetgriffs have to endure, but his interactions with his eventual friends gradually soften him and teach him how to trust.

  • Childhood Friend Romance: He and Grizel met when they were cubs and fell in love as adults.

  • Class Clown: Not to the extent of Gilbert, but he does make a few snarky comments during class (he does apologise for it though).

  • Cool Big Bro: Can be this towards his siblings, especially as they grow older, praising their skills and comforting them when they're upset. After he and Guto have stopped teasing Gwyneth, they begin helping her with her training, give her advice on trash-talking other competitors during her sports, and act as her own personal cheer squad.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: Although not explicitly shown, it's heavily implied that Gruff's life on the streets was not a happy one.

  • Deadpan Snarker: He has a noticeably more sarcastic and snarky sense of humour than the others.

  • Eye Scream: His left eye is blind, with a long scar running across it.

  • Full-Name Ultimatum: He regularly uses this on his children when they're in trouble; sometimes on his siblings and friends too.

  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: Gruff forms the grumpy half with his girlfriend/fiancée Gruff. By comparison, Grizel is friendly, joyful, and soft-spoken while Gruff is more serious, pessimistic, and grumpy, although he does show a warmer side around the ones close to him (including Grizel).

  • Good Is Not Soft

  • Greater Need Than Mine: One of Gruff's defining traits. As a cub, he goes through a lot of trouble trying to steal food while avoiding the guards. Once he's in the clear, he prepares to feast when he sees some hungry homeless kids digging for food in the trash. Despite his hunger, Gruff offers his findings to them.

  • Happily Adopted: By Glynis, as with Gwyneth.

  • In the Hood: Starts out wearing a hooded robe to blend in better with the crowd.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may come off as an irritable, violent, and obnoxious jerk, but he does care about his friends and family. He just doesn't want anyone else to know he cares.

  • Justified Criminal: In his youth. As established from the very beginning, Gruff only steals food to survive. Once he becomes royal, he stops stealing as he no longer needs to. Of course, he gets No Sympathy from the various merchants and the palace guard for it.

  • Just Like Robin Hood: How often does he actually keep anything he steals for himself? Only a pouch of five bits. Gruff steals money and treasure from greedy Griffons, only keeping a few bits for himself while giving the rest away to the city's poorest people.

  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Hurt his family or friends in any way and he WILL beat the daylights out of you or die trying.

  • The Leader: Gruff is the leader of the team, being the most senior and skilled member. He's the most balanced and mature of his friends, and he knows how to use people's skills. Even after Guto takes up the mantle of ruler of Griffinstone, it's still Gruff who calls the shots and keeps the team from making bad decisions.

  • Lovable Rogue: In his youth, he's a thief and a trickster (at least initially), but a sympathetic one you can root for. He's shown to be ultimately selfless by giving the things he stole to those less fortunate than himself, and is a generally kind Griffon to boot.

  • Malicious Misnaming: In their youth, he and Guto occasionally called Gwyneth "Gwy-nerd." They stopped it after they got over their Big Brother Bully behaviour.

  • Master Archer: His melee weapons of choice. He can expertly shoot with his longbow from flying to hovering in a lay-back position, including shooting more than one arrow at once, which showcases exactly how proficient and skilled of an archer he is. He can also calculate the exact number of arrows he needs for an attack.

  • Master of Disguise

  • Meaningful Name: In the project, Gruff's full name is "Gruffudd" meaning "lord" or "prince", which not only stands for his personality but also indicates his eventual adoption to the royal family.

  • Missing Mom: The whereabouts of Gruff's biological parents are unknown (though they're likely deceased). Gruff's adoptive mother, Glynis, died when he and his siblings were still young. It's hinted that he still misses her very much and that outside of Gruff's general love for the caretaking of children, he's touched by how Glynis took him in and raised him as her own, making him want to give other cubs a home like she had for him. It is also likely that this is his way of carrying on her legacy.

  • Modest Royalty: As an adopted Active Royalty, Gruff is the one who likes to go out and mingle with the townspeople the most; he actually hardly wears anything aside from an occasional sash, unless there is a formal occasion such as her brother's coronation.

  • Muscles Are Meaningless: He can lift people over his head and carry his six friends at will, despite them being more or less the same size as him, with very little effort. Even at times when he's weakened by disease or rather delirious, it takes the combined efforts of Guto, Gonsod, Gyeong, Gareth, Gilbert, and Gideon plus Brights Brightly's magic to keep him restrained. His greater strength may be due, in part, to his ferocious temper.

  • Nice Guy: For all his grumpiness and sarcasm, is overall very compassionate and by far the most level-headed of the group. That doesn't mean he's a pushover, though.

  • Official Couple: With Grizel. They eventually get engaged.

  • Only Sane Man: Thanks to a life of raising numerous children, each of different generations and with a different personality, he is adapted to different personas and can communicate with anyone and help others with their activities without a problem. In addition to this, he has a lot of experience dealing with a large number of people in a calm, collected manner.

  • Papa Wolf: He's this towards his children and grandchildren.

  • Parental Abandonment: At least according to the townsfolk, he "came from a dangerous background" and "has no parents. Or at least, no one will admit to being his parent," leaving what happened to his biological parents unclear. They're most likely deceased in the present.

  • Parental Substitute: He is the guardian and adoptive father of many Griffons, and the adoptive grandfather of their own descendants.

  • Promotion to Parent: He sometimes acts as a father figure towards his younger siblings, since their mother Glynis is no longer around.

  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Gruff is The Leader and by far the most experienced fighter in the team.

  • Scars Are Forever: At one point, his eye gets scarred, leaving him half-blind. This scar remains even years later.

  • Sibling Rivalry: Despite loving each other, Gruff and his siblings do squabble.
    • This is played more straight in the past when Gruff and Guto would constantly make fun of their younger sister.

  • Sibling Seniority Squabble: Gruff is the oldest of his siblings (and his friends) by three days.

  • Sibling Team: Him with Guto and Gwyneth.

  • Signature Headgear: The red fez he wears in adulthood, which he's hardly ever seen without.

  • Staircase Tumble: He occasionally falls down the stairs.

  • The Strategist: Gareth is undoubtedly the Smart Guy of the team, but Gruff is no slouch either. He's the one who usually comes up with the plans whether they're high-level missions or just impromptu ways to get out of temporary jams.

  • Street Smart: Gruff knows any criminal trick to run from the law, mostly because he ‘’’invented’’’ some of them. This proves helpful to catch some criminals and eventually, he's assigned to teach the royal guards how to think like a thief.

  • Submissive Badass: Even as Guto accumulates achievements through the years, Gruff is shown to still be far more skilled, concentrated, and stronger than him, easily defeating him in sparring and winning despite going on more equal ground later on. Superior stamina notwithstanding, he still defers to Guto, only stepping into the role of Leader when on the battlefield or when he's indisposed.

  • Team Dad

  • Tough Love: He can be a harsh critic, is blunt in his appraisals and even willing to smack his children/grandchildren around a little to emphasise his point, but it's all because he loves them and he needs to make sure they're as strong as they can be given the deadly foes they go up against with him.

  • The Storyteller: He knows a lot of stories and enjoys telling them to others. Other characters imply that he does that a lot (to the point where others flawlessly mimic his gestures as he talks).

  • Super-Strength: He is physically the strongest of the group.

  • Sweet Tooth: He seems to have this for chocolate.

  • Trauma Conga Line: Gruff's life has not been a happy one. He was abandoned and hatched from an egg in a lost and found bin. From when he was little, he had to endure severe hostility from the townspeople and fend for himself. He eventually found a family when Queen Glynis adopted him. Then Gruff's mother contracted an illness and died, leaving him scared from the loss. Then he and his friends had to fight several villains and protect the lands for years.

  • "Wanted!" Poster: He gets one as a result of him being a thief around Griffinstone that remains in place.

    King Guto

King Guto Guernsey Michel Giovanni Grover Gerto von Gardenwarbler IV

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_guto.png
Click here to see him as a cub
The second oldest of the seven and the fourteenth king of Griffinstone, as well as the adoptive brother of Gruff and Gwyneth.
  • A Friend in Need: Guto shows deep camaraderie with his guards, and is there to support them as much as possible and he is always there for them.

  • Affectionate Nickname: His friends call him "Guts" and his siblings call him "Bro". Gruff also regularly calls him “little brother”.

  • Badass Pacifist: He dislikes fighting and approaches challenges peacefully, but he's fully armed and ready for combat if the situation calls for it.

  • Big Brother Bully: He, alongside Gruff, was mean to Gwyneth when they were younger (albeit to a slightly milder extent), gloating about one day becoming a royal guard, mocking her for not finding her place, and playing mean pranks on her.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Guto towards his younger sister.

Big Sister Worship: They really look up to Dolly

  • Character Catchphrase: Guto sometimes exclaims "Crispy cornflakes!”, mirroring his siblings' catchphrases.

  • The Confidant: Zigzaged between him and Gruff. The two are shown to trust one another more in the group as they are often discussing things privately away from their other companions, such as Gruff's worries for his protégés and the rest of the team's safety, and Guto's struggles of being the king.

  • Cool Big Bro: On the giving and receiving end of this trope. He shares a very close bond with his older brother, Gruff, and they are often shown working as a team. And Guto himself is nothing but loving to his younger sister, especially as they grow older. After he and Gruff have stopped teasing Gwyneth, they begin helping her with her training, give her advice on trash-talking other competitors during her sports, and act as her own personal cheer squad.

  • Cool Uncle: He's this towards his adoptive/foster nephews and nieces.

  • Cuddle Bug: He's an openly affectionate little brother to Gruff, regularly hugging him in family photos and, at times, practically climbing Gruff, and Gruff just kind of... Lets him do it. He also tends to cling to his older brother when frightened. He's equally affectionate to his younger sister Gwyneth.

  • Good Is Not Soft

  • Hidden Depths: Guto has a keen interest for acting and theater.

  • The Leader: Being the king, in logic, he is the leader of the team. Though he usually lets Gruff take the lead in the battlefield.

  • Malicious Misnaming: In their youth, he and Gruff occasionally called Gwyneth "Gwy-nerd." They stopped it after they got over their Big Brother Bully behaviour.

  • Master Actor: He has a good knowledge for theater plays and Guto, himself, is able to perfectly impersonate and mimic others' (especially his friends and brother) voices and silhouettes, which can come in handy in the battlefield as a form of distraction. He sometimes overplays his impressions to cheer others up. He also mentions having an easy time memorising lines.

  • Mature Younger Sibling: Downplayed. He's the middle child, following his brother and sister's adoption, and Gruff is not exactly someone immature, but he seems to take on the role more than any other (at least initially).

  • Modest Royalty: Combined with Active Royalty, Guto likes to go out and mingle with the townspeople and usually wears so much as a sash, unless there is a formal occasion such as his coronation.

  • Nice Guy: He's someone who clearly loves his family and friends, and apologises for so much as raising his voice.

  • No Sense of Personal Space: At least when his siblings are concerned, it seems.

  • Older Than They Look: Even more so than his friends and older brother. Guto is around fifty (in flashbacks), but has no gray hairs and could pass for a twenty-to-thirty-year-old Griffon. His somewhat childish demeanor and him not aging from having kids may have something to do with this.

  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He actively fights alongside his soldiers.

  • Scars Are Forever: Overtime, likely due to the continuous fighting, he develops distinct facial scars where he's been hit. These scratches remain even years later in the epilogue.

  • Sensitive Artist: Guto is quite talented in his acting hobby. He is also an emotionally mature and thoughtful individual, providing comfort to his family and friends and ensuring the well-being of his guards.

  • Shipper on Deck: While he, himself, lacks a mate or particular interest in being in a relationship, he is incredibly happy and supportive when his siblings and friends pursue their own romances.

  • Sibling Rivalry: Despite loving each other, Guto and his siblings do squabble.
    • This is played more straight in the past when Gruff and Guto would constantly make fun of their younger sister.

  • Sibling Team: Him with Gruff and Gwyneth.

    Gruncle Gonsod

Gonsodolt "Gonsod" Sheldon Goldeneye

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled1287.png
Click here to see him as a teenager
Click here to see him as a cub
Third-oldest of the group and the most pacific. He's usually (or, at least, tries to be) the peacemaker between his friends, although he's still very easy to get mingled in their arguments. He is, additionally, a musical prodigy and rhythm master with an array of instruments for every possible occasion.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • His friends call him "Gons" and other nicknames, some of which are “Bluebird” and “Blue Cheese”.
    • Gwyneth calls him “Boobie.”
    • His grandnephews/nieces sometimes call him "Gruncs".

  • Ambiguously Pan: He identifies as panromantic asexual and while Gonsod is mostly interested in girls, such as Gwyneth, to quote him “he’s more interested in people's personalities rather than gender.”

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's pleasant, likable, and a self-described pacifist, but this blue Griffon is packing some serious power and he will use it on you if you push him too far.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's kind of absent-minded at times, but he's also a genuine battle-competent fighter.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Has this towards his younger sister, Gracelynn.

  • Blind Musician: Half-blind anyway.

  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Somewhat connected to the aforementioned above. Gonsod, like the rest of his friends, usually drinks condensed milk, cocopandan syrup, fruit punch, or apple cider. He also has a fondness for strawberry merlot mocktail. When he drinks anything stronger, especially wine, Gonsod gets drunk out of his mind, "even moreso than a wine-basted roast goose," as Gruff puts it. According to his friends, he once downed a whole barrel of plum wine while on a trip to Cloudsdale and, up to his dizziness, fell off the clouds but luckily landed in a pile of mattresses from a store sale under the cloud city. The situation ended in him being in a full body cast. He also quickly gets drunk from taste-testing wine from Manehattan's barrels. Even when what he drinks doesn't contain alcohol, he still has trouble controlling his intake.

  • Caring Gardener: Gonsod owns a small garden that he regularly tends to. He's rather proud of the crops he provides to his community.

  • Child Prodigy: Since he was a cub, Gonsod has been an excellent performer, guitar player, and singer despite having few opportunities to practice due to his family's business. He is enriched and talented in numerous fields of music and demonstrates an exceptional affinity for playing musical instruments, usually stringed ones, especially the acoustic guitar. He also demonstrates some dexterity in playing the piano and is implied to be familiar with fiddling. He can also use whatever objects he can find as instruments and takes hold of the music touch during storytime, either for musical numbers or for background music. Gerson is soon asking him for musical advice, which Gonsod provides, much to his delight.

  • Childhood Friend Romance: He and Gwyneth met when they were cubs and fell in love as adults.

  • Complexity Addiction: He seems to enjoy making things difficult, even outright stating it on occasion, making complicated recipes and paying extreme attention to the making process.

  • Cool Big Bro: His sister sees him as this.

  • Crazy-Prepared: Carries multiple cell instruments, just in case a little backup music is needed.

  • Dual Wielding: He wields twin kamas.

  • Ear Notch: He is missing much of the top of his left ear. He's shown having his ear whole back when he was a cub.

  • Family Business: Growing and selling carrots along with all the myriad methods of preparing them, which Gonsod takes very seriously.

  • Family Eye Resemblance: He has yellow eyes that all of his grandnephews and grandnieces inherit.

  • Fatal Flaw: A big flaw of his is that he tends to have somewhat of an addictive personality. Several times he's shown getting hooked on something. He's also shown to be somewhat addictive to carrots (though this is okay since it is a healthy addiction).

  • Good Is Not Soft: He would rather talk things out than fight and use violence as a last resort. But when the last resort is needed, he will use it.

  • Green Thumb: He's a very skilled gardener.

  • Guilty Pleasures: He is secretly rather flattered that his friends like his food enough to fight with others for it.

  • Handicapped Badass: The aftermath of a hydra attack leaves him having a prosthetic wooden back leg and a ripped-out eye from the beating the beast inflicted on him and it still doesn't stop him from engaging in combat and doing all he can to keep his companions safe.

  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Gonsod regularly does the cooking for his companions, which is traditionally considered a feminine chore. In addition, he cries openly (sometimes in the most undignified of ways), uses a handbag, likes wearing "cute-looking" aprons, occasionally does his claws, and is perfectly comfortable wearing 'girly' accessories when needed in occasions, such as playing with the cubs.

  • Martial Pacifist: He protests with his words first and his fists second.

  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: It's downplayed for both him and Gwyneth, but it's shown; Gonsod has a few traditionally feminine interests and seems to do most of the cooking in the house (even wearing a pink apron when doing so), while Gwyneth is a bit of a craftsman and enjoys water sports.

  • Nice Guy: He's very kind and compassionate, and also extremely hesitant about voicing any negative opinion he may have out of fear of offending others.

  • Not So Above It All:
    • While he hates fighting, he doesn't really try to stop his friends when they fight over what he cooks. Justified somewhat, as he admits he's not sure what to feel or what to do when it happens.
    • In addition to the aforementioned, although he's usually the "peacemaker" of the group, he's unfortunately very easy to get mingled in an argument by just one insulting comment. Given his emotional and sensitive personality, this also makes sense.

  • Oblivious to Love: While he begins to have feelings for Gwyneth, it, uh... Takes him some time to realise that she is already interested in him and has no clue about it until Gruff and Guto point it out.

  • Official Couple: With Gwyneth. They eventually get engaged.

  • Only Sane Man: When Gruff and Guto aren't this, it's usually him.

  • Raised by Grandparents: Downplayed. His father and mother were still relatively present in his life but both were occupied with the family business by the time he was still a young boy. As such, Gonsod and his sister were regularly left in the care of their grandparents.

  • Scars Are Forever: After getting attacked by a hydra, he's left with a ripped-out eye and a back leg less. Even smaller scratches inflicted on him by the beast are still visible years later.

  • Shoe Slap: Well, actually "Wooden Leg Slap." He can detach and reattach his wooden leg, which he sometimes uses a la chancla on others.

  • Signature Instrument: His guitar.

  • Signature Move: Gonsod tends to spin his guitar (or any instrument) while pulling it out for a tune.

  • Source Music: Gonsod has been shown to be the in-universe source of background music numerous times.
    • He's also the leader of his own music band.

  • Supreme Chef: Gonsod is the team cook and it is indicated he was good at cooking as a child. Gideon in particular can't get enough of his muffins. He's dedicated to his work, as his family business is well-kept and he is shown working earnestly. He is very talented at it, to the point where his meals are so good that his friends aggressively fight over even unfinished leftovers.

  • Sweet Baker: He's a nice, caring guy who likes to bake and cook.

  • Team Chef: See above.

  • Tragic Keepsake: His neckerchief belonged to his younger sister.

  • Trademark Favorite Drink: He's definitely the one in the group who loves strawberry merlot mocktail the most (though he has trouble controlling how much he has).

  • Hammerspace: He can store things like his guitar under his wings without any visible pockets or bags there. Whatever item he needs to get or put away simply appears or vanishes as needed.

    Grandpa Gyeong

Gyeongseong "Gyeong" Evangelos Grosbeak

Click here to see him as a cub
The builder.
  • Affectionate Nickname: His friends call him "Gynns".

  • Always Second Best: While Gyeong and Gareth get along really well, there are moments when Gyeong feels intellectually inferior to his friend.

  • Blood Knight: He's usually the first one to suggest getting physical when faced with a threat. Not only that, his weapon of choice is a pair of Shuko spikes that, aside from climbing, serve as weapons in hand-to-hand combat.

  • Dual Wielding: He wields a pair of Shucko spikes.

  • Friend to All Children: He seems to like kids a lot and wants to make sure they have a fun Blue Moon Festival, even putting on a scavenger hunt for them.

  • Gadgeteer Genius: Give him enough time and resources and he can make almost anything.

  • Genius Bruiser: He is both an effective ninja and a genius in many fields of science.

  • Good Is Not Soft

  • Handicapped Badass: It's revealed that he has a prosthetic right wing after losing his real one in a mission, unbeknownst to his friends. It still doesn't stop him from skillfully flying and engaging in combat.

  • Happily Married: To Gavya. Decades later, they're still going strong. He was also this with Galicia, his first wife (and his sons' mother). Her death from a terminal illness affected him greatly.

  • Homemade Inventions

  • Innocently Insensitive: Although he can, sometimes, comes off as kind of a jerk, Gyeong is overall a compassionate and well-intentioned individual and would support his family and allies anytime.

  • Mr. Fixit: He can fix almost any piece of wood or tech he finds.

  • Normal Fish Ina Tiny Pond: While Gyeong is a Gadgeteer Genius and Omnidisciplinary Scientist, he soon finds himself overshadowed by Gareth, even calling himself a "scientific idiot" in comparison.

  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: He seems to know a lot about multiple scientific fields, ranging from engineering to metallurgy.

  • Parent with New Paramour: Gyeong finds a new woman to fill the void left behind with the passing of Galicia.

  • Scars Are Forever: After some debris falls on top of him, one of his injuries include three scars on his hind leg that remain years later. He also lost his right wing during an unidentified mission.

  • The Smart Guy: Along with Gareth. Though he has been feeling plenty of doubt of being able to help out as this when he feels he Can't Catch Up to Gareth.

  • Strong Family Resemblance: Gouge and Gear both inherited his facial features, more notably his markings. The same goes for his granddaughters, who are practically little replicas of him as a cub.

  • Stubborn Mule: Once he has decided something, his mind is completely locked on the matter and there's no way possible to make him reconsider, especially when his Honor Before Reason trait gets combined with it.

The brain.
  • Affectionate Nickname: His friends call him "Gath".

  • Badass Bookworm: Despite his thorough knowledge of mechanics and metallurgy on paper, he is a poor builder. However, his Encyclopaedic Knowledge still winds up helping the team and saving the day.

  • Book Smart

  • Character Tics: When stressed, he sometimes paces back and forth, which is something real birds also do if upset.

  • Cool Teacher: Despite his occasional strictness, most of his students insist he is this.

  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • As a child, Gareth archives all of his school papers, but he also adds one random ridiculous paragraph into each of them, just in case someone tries using one of them for themselves. This becomes unfortunate for Gilbert when he steals an old paper from Gareth that makes their teacher believe he has a fear of bananas.
    • He carries a first responder kit with him in case he needs to tend someone's injuries, in and out of the battlefield. His bag also includes obstetric instruments.

  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: Gareth is very knowledgeable, to the point where Gyeong feels intellectually inferior to his friend. When he expresses his self-doubt about this, Gareth reveals that his performance in fields of mechanics and metallurgy isn't that great. Though his knowledge of those fields amongst others is superior than his companions. More than this though, his talent seems to be applying this knowledge in abstract or theoretical ways (compared to Gyeong who is very straightforward when it comes to the use of skills he learns). That is he is able to use his knowledge of how things work on other objects to help with Gyeong's work.

  • Genius Bruiser: He is both an effective soldier and a genius in many fields of electrology, biology, chemistry, mathematics, medical care, and metallurgy.

  • Grade Skipper: Went to and graduated from college as a preteen.

  • Happily Married: To Genevieve.

  • Insecure Love Interest: He doesn't believe Genevieve could ever love him, but his friends encourage him to take a chance.

  • The Medic: Aside from being the brain, this is Gareth's role, not only among the royal guard but towards the community as a whole. If anyone gets an injury during the battle, he takes the lead to treat said injury and ways to get the others to safety to prevent further damage.

  • No Social Skills: He starts out like this, being very shy, quiet, and awkward in every interaction with other cubs. He gets more confident and social over the years, though still prefers to stick with his friend group.

  • Obsessively Organized

  • The Professor: Both figuratively and literally, as it becomes one of his jobs later on.

  • Psychologist Teacher: Can sometimes serve as this to his students.

  • Red Is Heroic: His fur and feathers are red, and he is a very noble Griffon and excellent master in martial arts.

  • Scars Are Forever: At some point, he was left with three permanent large scars across his nape.

  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He's defined strongly by his intelligence and wears glasses in his youth as a signature.

  • Stern Teacher: A comedic example. While not a Sadistic Teacher, he does occasionally humour his students when he's annoyed with particular errors on their assignments. Despite this, it's shown several times that he truly cares for the welfare of his students, good and bad ones, only wanting them to succeed and endure the education system.

  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Feels this towards his two older brothers, Gardner and Garve. Gareth's self-esteem issues largely stem from himself and almost everyone else (especially his father) comparing him to them. The twins are aware of this and actively encourage Gareth that he can be just as good as them someday.

  • Technician vs. Performer: The technician compared to Gyeong's performer. Gareth is by far the more academic of the two but finds himself at a disadvantage because Gyeong has more raw talent, and his intuitive style is less predictable. Being the technician has advantages for the team, however, because he takes the time to understand the basic principles of glyph magic and metallurgy, giving him a great deal more control over the results. While Gyeong comes up with the ideas of combining glyphs and magic to construct new effects and gadgets, Gareth is the one who figures out how to actually make it work.

  • Verbal Tic: Longer than most, but when asked a question while stressed, Gareth often goes into Sarcasm Mode before Suddenly Shouting.

  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Throughout the series, Gareth routinely shows annoyance at Gilbert's antics. But he still sees him as his friend, and if he winds up in danger, he will save him.

  • Warrior Poet: In his youth as a guard-in-training, he wrote love poems to Genevieve between sessions.

  • Weak, but Skilled: Gareth lacks the pure athleticism of his friends, but compensates with cleverness.

    Grandpa Gilbert

Giselbert "Gilbert" Hector Roberto Gavilánon, Sr.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled730.png
Click here to see him as a cub
The prankster of the team. He's very approachable, social, and has a good sense of humour. Prefers to go with the flow and is sometimes off lost in his own world but you can also count on him to come through when it's most important.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: He usually carries around a waist bag when going out.

  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • His friends call him "Gils".
    • Ginger calls him "amor" and "cariño", both of which are Spanish terms of endearment.

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: It's confirmed that he has ADHD, hence his incredibly short attention span, his tendency to overlook obvious details, and unintentional inability to follow instructions. He's also shown to have a hard time focusing and remembering what he's doing or sitting still. Fortunately, being in the royal guard and Galina's meditation classes does help him.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He is the most affable and laid-back of his friends, but not a pushover.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Despite his goofy attitude, Gilbert is still a trained royal guard.

  • Big Brother Mentor: Is this to Gideon sometimes.

  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Downplayed and implied, but it's there, given his slightly peculiar topping choices on some foods.

  • Bizarre Taste in Food: He has a fondness for sandwiches with banana, curry, roast beef, and maple syrup. His friends find it disgusting.

  • Blessed with Suck: In the sense that having enhanced hearing can sometimes heighten his sensitivity to auditory stimuli.

  • Blood Knight: Being the enthusiastic soldier that he is, he usually looks like he's having the time of his life during a fight. Except when It's Personal.

  • Body Motifs: Ears. His power is super hearing.

  • Book Dumb: Downplayed. Gilbert is repeatedly shown to be very intelligent, is an avid map reader, and has a strong desire to learn. Despite this, his grades were implied to be rather lackluster in his old school. The fact that he has ADHD probably has something to do with it. Additionally, his grades at the castle where his quick thinking, creativity, and capacity for absorbing knowledge are put to good use are implied to be excellent, indicating that it was more a case of the school system's curriculum failing to accommodate Gilbert's specific needs.

  • The Charmer

  • Class Clown: As a cub, Gilbert tends to act like it.

  • Collector of the Strange: Especially in his cubhood; some of the things he collects aren't exactly considered "valuable."

  • Cuddle Bug: Gilbert is usually the first member to offer hugs and other forms of reassuring gestures to those in need.

  • Deadpan Snarker: For all his cheerfulness, he's known to pass a few snide remarks here and there.

  • Disabled Love Interest: A neurological variant to Ginger due to struggling with multiple mental health issues, including but not necessarily limited to severe ADHD. Ginger wouldn't necessarily understand this, but she is aware Gilbert's general behavior is quite out of the ordinary and has gotten himself hurt with alarming frequency. Even if Ginger isn't fully cognizant of this, she doesn't hesitate to become a much needed anchor for him when she sees how much Gilbert can struggle with his personal issues.

  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: His eyes are often half closed. In combination with a cocky grin, it denotes his mischievous nature.

  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Gilby-loo", by his wife.

  • Family Honor: If there's anything he cares about deeply, it's his family (that he considers his friends to be part of as well).

  • Friendless Background: From moving around so much and his eccentric behaviour.

  • Friendly Shopkeeper: Although he is visibly tired from his job as a merchant, he is still as full of love for what he does as ever.

  • Good Is Not Soft: Do not let his kindness and desire to befriend as many people as he can fool you. If someone attempts to hurt the people he cares about, he will make them regret it.

  • Gratuitous Spanish: He's not originally from Griffinstone and grew up with his Latina family, so he is equally fluent in Spanish and English ("Griffish") and switches between the two whenever the mood strikes him.
    • As a child, he strikes up a friendship with his friends despite him being unable to speak English ("Griffish"); though his ability to follow along with his friends' more basic statements would suggest he at least knows more English than his friends know Spanish and likely knows at least a small amount of English. His friends then offer to teach him their language and he to teach them his own. In the present, adult Gilbert can speak English fluently.

  • Handicapped Badass: A neurological variant. Gilbert is neurodivergent, possessing severe ADHD that has seemingly gone largely untreated and significantly impair his ability to perform well in certain situations. None of this stops him from taking down the various threats of Griffinstone alongside his friends with both his wits and his sword mastery.

  • Happily Married: To Ginger.

  • Hates Being Alone: In general, Gilbert prefers not to be alone, always wanting to hang out with someone else and feels a little depressed whenever he is all by himself. He also secretly fears being rejected by his own family and friends.

  • Hope Bringer: A role that Gilbert desperately tries to play for his team; he constantly reassures them that everything will be okay in the end, even if he himself has doubts.

  • Instant Messenger Pigeon: Essentially one of his roles on the team.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Gilbert is a prankster who trolls his friends, but he's shown to have a deeply caring and thoughtful heart.

  • Massive Numbered Siblings: He is one out of seven children; he has two older biological siblings and four stepsiblings through his mother's partners. He also has two half-brothers through his father's second marriage, thus making him one out of nine children.

  • Misery Trigger: Gilbert gets very sad when he's left by himself or someone belittles his intelligence and maturity.

  • Nice Guy: Though often Innocently Insensitive and socially awkward (especially in the beginning of the series), Gilbert is a very friendly and caring guy.

  • The Nicknamer: Gilbert often gives derogatory nicknames to enemies and enjoys poking fun at them by calling them silly puns; and he absolutely does not care if the villain likes it or not.
    • He loves giving various clever nicknames to people, but is especially affectionate with Ginger and his friends.

  • Nicknaming the Enemy: He gives virtually every enemy of theirs a nickname and generally isn't afraid to insult them.

  • Not a Morning Person: He has a lot of trouble waking up. It takes him a minute to realise what's going on and what the people waking him up are talking about, sleepily responding with mistaken words and phrases.

  • The Prankster

  • Scars Are Forever: A particular crash across a stained glass window has left him with minor but noticeable scars on his face and body, including having a bandaged elbow.

  • Super-Hearing: He has this for his power, which comes in handy during patrols.

  • Undying Loyalty: Gilbert is incredibly devoted to all of his friends and loved ones.

  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Gilbert seems to have this sort of relationship with most of his friends, but it's especially evident in his relationship with Gareth.

    Grandpa Gideon

Gideone "Gideon" Gunnar Greyfeather

Click here to see him as a cub
The brain.
  • The Ace: Captain of many of Griffinstone's sports teams from a young age, later a member of the Wonderbolts.

  • Achilles' Heel: His athletic skills vary from "being exceptionally good" to "tripping all over the place". When it's the latter, it's usually his friends that he ends up crashing into or hitting with a ball in the head, be it from any sport.

  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • His friends call him "Gids".

  • The Baby of the Bunch: Downplayed. Gideon is the youngest, though only by a few months, at best. While not outright babied most of the time, the others are usually quite friendly with him, offering him pats on the head for comfort, not minding and accepting his sometimes spontaneous hugs.

  • Big Eater: He is shown consuming more food than most members of the group. If his plate is any indication, he can’t get enough of Gonsod's carrot zucchini bread and carrot cake french toast, which form a pile almost as high as his head which is his second helping. His friends wonder where he puts it all.
    • According to Gonsod, he eats two lunches.

  • Butt-Monkey: Gideon is quite accident prone and tend to endure his share of Amusing Injuries and other forms of slapstick, to say the least.

  • Childish Tooth Gap: Had one of those as a kid.

  • Combat Parkour: While all seven fly, jump, and flip, Gideon does so considerably more than the rest and is quite graceful, if not a bit reckless, when it comes to jumping/flying around. His flips are frequently quoted as his strong point by his friends and acknowledged by Gideon himself.

  • Empathic Environment: Like with everygriff, the clouds on which Gideon sits on mirror his mood, such as darkening into a rain cloud when he's upset.
    • He uses this as a weapon by having tufts of cloud hidden in his armour that he can control to electrocute enemies.

  • Faceplanting into Food: Tends to fall asleep face-first into his breakfast when he's extremely tired.

  • Fantasy Helmet Enforcement: When he's roller-skating, he wears a helmet adapted to fit an Accipitriformes' head.

  • Happily Married: To Galina. Despite their contrasting personalities, they love each other dearly.

  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Implied. His daughter is aroace (aromantic asexual), and makes no attempt to pretend otherwise. Gideon himself is bisexual.

  • High-School Sweethearts: With Galina, in a sense. He and Galina became fast friends when they first met in their childhood, and in their teens are a team captain and junior cheerleader respectively, which is the time period that they fall in love, and get married when they're adults.

  • Improv Fu: As no actual traditional kata exists for his weapon of choice, the kusari fundo, Gideon has developed his own way of forming a kata out of it, combining his natural sports and martial arts skills.

  • Innocent Blue Eyes: They reflect his optimistic personality.

  • The Klutz: His passion for sports means that he often ends up crashing into one (or all) of his friends or hitting them with a ball in the head, be it from any sport. Despite his immense talent and professionalism in sports, he is shown to be quite clumsy and accident-prone, especially while rollerblading, and often at the expense of his friends as it's usually them that he crashes into.

  • Lightning Bruiser: He displays sufficient speed and agility in battle.

  • Lovable Jock: The athletic one in the group and also an all around Nice Guy.

  • Obnoxious In-Laws:
    • Gideon is this with his seven brothers-in-law, having a strained (at best) relationship with them because of how overprotective they are of Galina. He goes as far as to explain to his friends that if bad ghosts could visit, his brothers-in-law would still haunt him.
    • It's implied that Gideon doesn't particularly get along with his parents-in-law either, as he mentions that he and Galina had to be married when they were both pushing 20, partly because Galina's family wasn't sure of his 'intentions' towards her. Although, while slightly annoyed with his in-laws' attitude, he still considers his and Galina's wedding the happiest day of his life, and the two are cheerfully married to each other.

  • Offhand Backhand: Gideon succeeds in taking down opponents without even looking at them.

  • Offscreen Crash: Usually during one of his sports, Gideon is often expected to fall on something.

  • Older Than They Look: Downplayed. He is the same age as his friends (sixty-eight years old) and it is obvious that he is an elder. However, it is known that he is at least a few months younger than the rest of his friends, but he appears younger because of his somewhat slim build.

  • Scars Are Forever: After losing control of some storm clouds, Gideon was permanently charred and scarred on his elbows and tail.

  • Slapstick: Gideon usually falls over when holding other people up.

  • Spirited Competitor: He's fairly competitive and loves to win but he's also all about good sportsmanship.

  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: His older brother Gordon seems to be the parental favourite. Therefore, Gideon has always had to live under Gordon's shadow, though he still looks up to his older brother and relatively gets along fine with him.

  • Super-Strength: Gideon is strong enough to use Galina and Georgina as a giant pair of weights.

  • Weapon Twirling: Due to the nature of his weapon, Gideon often twirls his Kusari-Fundo.

Senior Gals

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/senior_group_and_gals_20220725155301.png
The Senior Gals
The Griffons' partners and the First Ladies of Griffinstone.
  • Distaff Counterpart: They're essentially this to their respective partners but each is still her own person.

  • Kunoichi: They all become this after joining the Royal Guard alongside the boys.

  • Opposites Attract: While it's played more straight with certain members of the group, the girls' personalities are noticeably quite the opposites of their respective partners'.

  • Pantsless Males, Fully-Dressed Females: The Senior Gals are usually seen wearing full outfits (except for shoes), in situations like parties or during summer. This is especially noticeable when they're placed next to the Senior Group, who usually clothed in nothing more than their armours, a few accessories and their own fur.

    Grandma Grizel

Grizelda "Grizel" Angelina Maria-Rosa Goshawk

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grandma_grizel.png
Click here to see her as a cub
The oldest of the Senior Gals and Gruff's partner.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Gruff calls her "Griz" along with the typical terms of endearment between couples.
    • Sometimes Gwyneth calls her "Grizzy."

  • Ambiguously Bi: Aside from her relationship with Gruff, she mentions having many previous dates. A flashback of her past relationships show her going out with both men and women.

  • Battle Couple: Grizel forms one with her boyfriend Gruff. The first time that they teamed up in a romantic manner was in their teen-to-young-adult years, though they had yet to realise and admit their feelings for each other at that point. They later engage several prominent members of the Arimaspi's army after their Relationship Upgrade in adulthood.

  • Blind Without 'Em: Her vision is very blurry without her glasses on.

  • Combat Hand Fan: Her preferred weapon.

  • Cool Big Sis: Her dynamic with Gwyneth. A loving, protective and fun big sister who hangs out with and takes care of her younger sister. On numerous occasions, Gwyneth flat-out states how she loves Grizel like a sister. Furthermore, Grizel is engaged to Gruff, Gwyneth's adoptive brother, making the two Griffonesses future sisters-in-law.

  • Dance Battler: Grizel uses her skills in dancing to help her in her fights.

  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Grizel is a (self-proclaimed in childhood) "lady", occasionally acts prissy, loves romance, and tries to mimic the elegance of her mother. But she still does enjoy the occasional tumble with her friends.

  • Glamorous Single Mother: Is this but only for a while as she doesn't stay single.

  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: Grizel forms the gleeful half with her boyfriend/fiancé Gruff. By comparison, Grizel is friendly, joyful, and soft-spoken while Gruff is more serious, pessimistic, and grumpy, although he does show a warmer side around the ones close to him (including Grizel).

  • Hidden Depths: Despite being a rather loud and pushy woman who is completely spoiled in her youth, she shows a lot of passion and possesses a good heart. Grizel is also mentioned to be a highly expert dancer, especially in the style of classical ballet (that she combines with her martial arts skills in battle), a rather skilled gardener, and a cosmetic formulator that mixes raw natural materials together to create her own cosmetic products from a beauty mud facial to a macadamia shampoo.

  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: She has at least four cats.

  • Light Is Good: Grizel is a cream-coloured Griffoness and is one of the good guys.

  • Nice Girl: Not only is she a good friend but has also shown to be extremely selfless and kind. While she is used to getting everything she wants, she is more than willing to sacrifice her own happiness in a heartbeat for her friends'.

  • Not So Above It All: Although she tells Gruff to keep calm when feeling angry, she's prone to start yelling at anything she doesn't like on the radio (usually things like diced onions on hot dogs).

  • Odd Friendship: Eventually romance, with Gruff. At least, that's how some creatures think. In comparison, Grizel is a mostly calm and lady-like Spoiled Sweet debutante and Gruff is a down-to-earth former street-boy-turned-prince with a rather rowdy side and somewhat of a temper. Nevertheless, they are lifelong best friends, eventually a couple, and their relationship shows. They never argue, they respect each others beliefs and always cheer the other one on, they comfort one another when they are down, support their dreams, and have a lot of love and affection for one another.

  • Official Couple: With Gruff. They eventually get engaged.

  • Passionate Sports Girl: She's a fan of buckball, having bought tickets for herself and her friends to watch a game.

  • Pink Means Feminine: Grizel is very feminine and sometimes waers a pink flower-patterned neckerchief around her neck.

  • Proper Lady: Graceful, elegant and poised. She is a regal, wealthy Griffoness of refinement and good manners, but takes her adventures well and stays level-headed.

  • Spoiled Sweet: Grizel is a sweet-natured and compassionate Griffoness.

  • Women Are Wiser: She usually acts as the voice of reason, but is still willing to join in any crazy antics as much as her mate does.

  • You Need a Breath Mint: Grizel's morning breath, according to Gruff.

    Grandma Gwyneth

Princess Gwennetta "Gwyneth" Giulietta Cathartesaura von Gardenwarbler I

Click here to see her as a cub
The second oldest of the Senior Gals, Gonsod's partner, and the adoptive younger sister of Gruff and Guto.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Her friends call her "Gwyn."
    • Gruff and Guto often call her "sis" and "little sister."

  • Ambiguously Pan: She identifies as pansexual and while Gwyneth is mostly interested in guys, such as Gonsod, she has seen some women through Crush Filter.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Mostly averted. While she does sometimes get on her brothers' nerves, she's not as bad as other examples of this trope.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Although she harbored resentment towards Gruff for years following their brother Guto's disappearance, deep down, Gwyneth really missed her brother despite everything that happened between them and regrets fighting with him.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: Gwyneth is the youngest of her family and the most emotionally vulnerable, being the easier to upset or frighten compared to her brothers.

  • Be Yourself: She's a strong believer in appreciating natural beauty and becomes offended when insulted for not wearing make-up and other cosmetics or simply for her appearance in general.

  • Big Brother Worship: Has shades of this with both older brothers at times.

  • Brainy Brunette: She is shown to be highly creative, a fast learner, a quick thinker, and a skilled hunter.

  • Broken Tears: When things get really, really bad, Gwyneth will frequently break down into these, most prominently after her mother's death and Guto's sudden disappearance.

  • Brother–Sister Team: With Gruff and Guto.

  • Character Catchphrase: "Shark sharkfins!" She occasionally uses Gruff's "Tough tailfeathers!"

  • Character Tics: Gwyneth has a small tendency to blow her headfeathers off of her face, something her grandnephew Gallus seems to have picked up on.

  • Cool Aunt: Of the surrogate variety. Gruff's wards, and especially Greg, have come to view her as one, openly referring to her as "Auntie Gwyn".

  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: In her youth, she tries to find her place among the family and distinguish herself from her two older siblings.

  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Downplayed. Sometimes she is the foolish to Gruff and Guto's responsible, sometimes she's the responsible to their foolish.

  • Good Luck Charm: The seashell bracelet on her foot.

  • Happily Adopted: By Queen Glynis, as with Gruff.

  • Honorary Aunt: She eventually becomes one to her brother Gruff's wards, who see him as their surrogate father. With them officially adopted by Gruff, Gwyneth is now their adoptive aunt. She additionally is this to her friend's children.

  • In-Series Nickname:
    • "Gwy-nerd." Doubles as an Embarrassing Nickname her brothers called her during their Big Brother Bully more-or-less-phase.
    • In a nicer vein, her friends occasionally refer to her as "The Sergeant", since this is her role in the royal guard.

  • Kindly Vet: One of her jobs is a sea-life vet and she is usually shown healing injured aquatic animals.

  • Little Sister Instinct: Despite being the younger sibling, Gwyneth is protective of Gruff and Guto and would do anything to keep them from getting hurt.

  • Meaningful Appearance:
    • Her winterwear has a row of lighter-coloured embroidered patterns of currents and the embellishment of a dark blue starfish respectively to signify her love for the sea-life. She also wears a festive piece that looks like leaves and cranberries, showing that she's enthusiastically embracing the season. Red cranberries are also symbols of love, warmth, and togetherness, which are key themes of the series and all things she stands for.

  • Meaningful Name: Her name is Welsh for "happiness", befitting her energetic and enthusiastic personality.

  • Modest Royalty: As adopted Active Royalty who likes to go out and mingle with the townspeople, Gwyneth usually dresses nicely but casually, unless there is a formal occasion such as her brother's coronation.

  • Momma's Boy: Gender-inverted. She shares a close bond with her mother and goes to her in moments of distress. Glynis in return absolutely dotes on her.

  • Near-Death Experience: She nearly gets killed when a pair of electric eels attack her during a hunt. Fortunately, her brothers jump in and get them away from her.

  • The Nicknamer: Gwyneth likes to call Gruff nicknames like "Fringehead" and "Seahorse.”

  • Official Couple: With Gonsod. They eventually get engaged.

  • One of the Boys: She spends a lot of time with the boys.

  • Outdoorsy Gal

  • Overshadowed by Awesome: She initially feels this way about her older brothers. She tries to feel okay with her abilities, but she feels like she is not able to contribute much to the kingdom.

  • Passionate Sports Girl: She's extremely skilled in gymnastics and swimming and likes to play water sports in her spare time.

  • Scars Are Forever: She has a scar on her right arm from an electric eel attack. It's still there even after years since the incident.

  • Shrinking Violet: She starts out with a rather timid personality, which significantly improves when Grizel befriends her.

  • Sibling Rivalry: While initially antagonising both of her brothers, she has a friendly one with her oldest brother Gruff in adulthood.
    • This is played more straight in the past when her older brothers would constantly make fun of her.

  • The Smurfette Principle: By the time she is officially inducted as a drill sergeant (and by extension a kunoichi), she becomes the first official female member of the Griffon Guard since her mother, at least until the rest of the Gals join in.

  • Symbol Motif Clothing: Currents and sealife are her main motifs.

  • Teen Pregnancy: She was around 18-turned-19-years-old when she had her first-born. It's unknown how it happened, though. note

  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Grizel's Girly Girl.

  • Tomboy Princess: Especially in her cub years. She loves diving in the creek and often comes home with leaves and mud on herself.

  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite her disdain for "fancy" things, Gwyneth loves crafting gifts for her loved ones on special occasions, enjoys wearing a dress (as long as it's aerodynamically sound) and jewelry, and enjoys applying make-up.

  • Tragic Keepsake: Gwyneth's ankle seashell bracelet originally belonged to her late mother.

  • True Blue Femininity: She wears a blue scarf and gloves during winter and a royal blue gown on events.

  • Warrior Princess: She's a princess and the drill sergeant of the royal Griffon guard.

  • I Have No Brother!: Although she never says it, she's initially furious with Gruff after Guto's disappearance.

  • Tomboy: Obviously more masculine in behavior and mannerisms compared to the rest of the girls.

    Grandma Gavya

Gavya Grosbeak

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grandma_gavya_vector_8.png
The third oldest of the Senior Gals, Gyeong's current wife, and a good friend of Gruff and Gilbert.
  • Brainy Brunette: She is an intelligent scientist, like Gyeong.

  • Commonality Connection: She and Gyeong connect over their mutual interest in metallurgy and science.

  • Gadgeteer Genius

  • Good Stepmother: Gouge worries that Gavya will be like the wicked stepmother from ‘’Cinderella’’. He soon finds out that she's really very nice, caring, kind, patient and loving, making him regret his attempt to break her and his father up. Gavya, herself, even admits there aren't many fairy tales with a non-evil stepmother, and that she wants to break that particular tradition.

  • Happily Married: To Gyeong.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Is this with the rest of the Senior Gals.
    • Is also this with Gruff and Gilbert, who are her two male best friends. They're her lifelong friends and the ones she turns to when she has difficulty bonding with Gyeong's sons (particularly Gouge).

  • Hidden Depths: She is a skilled dancer.

  • Meaningful Name: The name "Gavya" has its roots in Indian, and means "wish" and "desire", which could represent her wish of having a family of her own.

  • Nice Girl: Incredibly sweet and affectionate towards her grandkids.

  • Second Love: She's Gyeong's second wife.

  • Ship Tease: With Gyeong. They grow closer because of them sharing an interest in metallurgy. They eventually get married.

  • Sixth Ranger: She's essentially this to the girls.

The fifth oldest of the Senior Gals and Gilbert's wife.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Her friends sometimes call her "Ging".
    • Gilbert calls her "amor" and "cariño", both of which are Spanish terms of endearment.

  • Commonality Connection

  • Drama Queen: Ginger reacts to even the possibility of something bad happening like it's the end of the world. Her friends and husband have actually gotten used to her panicking at the smallest things.

  • Embarrassing Nickname: Gilbert occasionally calls her "Gingerbread".

  • George Jetson Job Security: It’s established that Ginger lost many jobs before becoming a face painter. She reveals she tried many jobs in the hopes of helping her family pay their overdue rent.

  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Ginger is not a patient Griffoness. Fortunately, her mood swings as easily the other way. Gilbert in particular can soothe her temper with a word or caress.

  • Hates Baths: Her brother, Goyo, claims that Ginger doesn't take showers very often. However, Ginger herself attempts to refute this, claiming that she just showers more quickly than her brother.

  • Hidden Depths: She proves herself to be a very talented artist. Looks like Gentileschi takes after her grandmother in this regard.

  • Mood-Swinger: Ginger is remarkably capricious. Her changes in mood tend to be sudden and dramatic, often switching quickly between extremes.

  • Nervous Tics: When she gets extremely nervous, she rapidly plays with her shawl's fringes as she repeatedly mutters "Cosas bonitas, cosas bonitas!" note  to help her control her emotions.

  • Nervous Wreck: Once she gets anxious about something, she has to repeatedly tell herself "clear skies" to calm herself down.

  • Spicy Latina: She's quite temperamental and willing to beat up anyone who messes with her friends and family.

The sixth oldest of the Senior Gals and Gideon's wife. As the meditator of the gang, she calms her companions whenever they are stressed.
  • Happily Married: To Gideon. Despite their contrasting personalities, they love each other dearly.

  • Heavy Sleeper: Implied. She is usually weary, droopy-eyed, and eager to fall asleep. She also has a hard time waking up in the morning.

  • Hidden Depths: It's revealed that she's a very talented seamstress, especially with sewing and knitting blankets, and that she used to be a cheerleader, owning her own pair of pom-poms. She also has incredible meditative knowledge and skills, and has experience shearing sheep.

  • High-School Sweethearts: With Galina, in a sense. He and Galina became fast friends when they first met in their childhood, and in their teens are a team captain and junior cheerleader respectively, which is the time period that they fall in love, and get married when they're adults.

  • Lotus Position: Does this while meditating.

  • Massive Numbered Siblings: The youngest and only sister of seven older brothers, all of whom were very overprotective of Galina and Gideon's relationship with them was "strained" at best.

  • Really Fond of Sleeping: So much that she weaponises it; she falls asleep in front of running enemies to make them trip.

  • Sleepyhead: She falls asleep almost all the time.
