Dirty tricks or not, I'll cut down you worthless dogs here and now!

The protagonist of Disgaea 7 and resident of the Hinomoto Netherworld cluster.

  • Cannot Spit It Out: He cannot tell Ao that he loves her without coughing up blood. The Empathy Killer curse makes sure that any strong emotions will result in actual death if he's not careful.
  • Celibate Hero: Fuji makes it clear he is not interested in getting married. He's already in too much debt and has to take care of Ao to make room for another person in his life. However, he adds that it's also because Ao would get jealous if he did find someone. She'll only accept someone who is stronger than her limiting the amount of people who could actually romance Fuji without invoking her wrath. Many succubus NPCs also make passes at him and he rejects them rather quickly to their disappointment.
  • Combat Pragmatist: As his quote up top implies, he can and will use every dirty trick in the book to win. This makes him something of an oddity in the Hinomoto Netherworld cluster, which all banded together under the concept of Bushido. This is further emphasized in gameplay where he deals more damage when attacking people from behind.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Zed was a Zombie Demon on a quest for revenge against an exceedingly powerful foe. Fuji is a wandering swordsman who, similar to Killia, fights back against an invading army.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Fuji tried raising Ao to be his instrument of revenge against Mugai at first, taking advantage of her innocent love. But when Fuji realized this was exactly what his own father did to him, he left Ao and told her to do what she wanted rather than what he told her to do. Making it worse is the Empathy Killer curse Fuji has on him, ensuring he could never give Ao the love he wanted to give her and she wanted desperately. Abandoning her was the only way he could give Ao the chance at life she deserved. Fuji realizes how wrong he was for doing this and resolves to give Ao all the love he should have given her, even if it costs him his life.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Having Mugai as a father by proxy results in this as he's the one that forced the Empathy Killer onto his son to prevent him from becoming like his mother who died protecting him after he decided to slack off with training for one day. He was forced to watch as his father became vengeful and abused him while calling it "tough love" and subjected Fuji to watch his father's many apprentices be cut down mercilessly for the hell of it. All of this and he almost makes the same mistake his father did when it comes to fatherhood as in his grief and rage, he created Ao hoping she would be able to kill Mugai. He abandons her once he stops himself from thinking like his dad. His past is such a sore spot that Joe Doe gleefully takes advantage of it.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Greedy and coldly pragmatic he may be, but he's nothing but an honorable mercenary in his contracts and is fighting against invaders. It later turns out he doesn't even want to be that evil, the Empathy Killer curse literally forces him to act like a jerk most times if he wants to survive; the very fact he is willing to endure pain to act polite at all shows he has a way nobler heart than he thinks.
  • Dimensional Cutter: In the final chapter, the Kanzan Musashi Infernal Treasure becomes capable of this after resonating with the souls of the Infernal Sanctuary.
  • Establishing Character Moment: During the opening, he challenges Hihibana Gendosai to "let our swords do the talking for us, like real Hinomoto warriors!" ...only to attack while the samurai is mid-count, then berate him for his hypocrisy when he calls two of his students in for backup.
  • Gagging on Your Words: His condition causes him to literally choke on his own blood when trying to fulfill Ao's request of telling her that he loves her.
  • Good Hurts Evil: Not unlike Laharl and his revulsion to anything involving love, Fuji does not do well with anything involving goodness due to having an allergy toward them. Charity, mercy, love, any of that and more will have him vomiting blood in pain. Even healing him audibly causes him pain, though for gameplay reasons it still does heal him. Unlike Laharl, his condition is quite serious. It's not an allergy like he claims, he's cursed with "Empathy Killer" so that these things quite literally will kill him if left unchecked and acts like a jerk to everyone specifically to keep living long enough to kill Opener.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Fuji uses his Infernal Treasure knowledge to fix Ao's body and save her life despite knowing such a selfless act will cause his "Empathy Killer" curse to kill him. Thankfully, Pirilika saves him with the Yoichi Founding Weapon.
  • Hidden Depths: Turns out he's incredibly skilled at Table Tennis and even bonds with another demon over their fondness of the sport.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has a pair that curve backwards from the sides of his head.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He'a blunt, mean and rather intimidating, but those who know him start to realize he's a big softy. Him coughing up blood often confirms their suspicion of the double meaning of his words.
  • Not So Above It All: Tends to get drawn into the others' antics despite himself, only to realize what he's doing mid-sentence and snap out of it.
  • Odd Friendship: Pirilika is rather confused as to how he and Akuma were just suddenly best friends, especially since all it took was the latter's really weird game of table tennis to cause it.
  • Only in It for the Money: Or so he claims. He's got a massive debt he needs to pay off, so he's determined to make as much HL as possible through any means necessary. Said debt is to help the victims of Ao's rampages.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Is stated to be an eastern dragon (ryu) demon (hence the horns and the tail).
  • Papa Wolf: After he clears things up with Ao, Fuji becomes fiercely protective of her to the point of going ballistic during the Postlude when he believes Ao's been kidnapped. He even almost starts a war with Celestia under the assumption that the angels are making decisions for Ao knowing she cannot fully consent to what they tell her.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: There are multiple times he resents Mugai even before the reveal. He gets angry when Higan describes his father as a kind, caring father...something that he never experienced.
  • When He Smiles: At the end of the game when all is said and done, the game rewards you with a bright smile that Fuji thought he never had.

    Pirilika
Voiced by: Hiyori Nitta (Japanese), Kristen McGuire (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drpg_pirilika_artwork_1.png
A Hinamoto Otaku from Wahei. She founded the clothing company, Tempoora, and amassed quite the fortune with it.
  • All-Loving Hero: It doesn't matter who it is or what they do, Pirilika knows there's a good reason for what they've done and hopes to get them back on the right track. Even genocide isn't completely unforgivable, given that death isn't the end of a person in Disgaea so much as a minor inconvenience before reincarnation. Canonline is the first person she can't find something good about, viewing her as pure evil after she destroys Sea Again's soul, along with the souls of everyone else that was in his Shirofune body. She hates her so much that she tells Fuji to stand down so she can kill Canonline herself, though after calming down she does try to talk reason into her mother one last time. After discovering Canonline's actual motives, she quickly forgives her.
  • Benevolent Boss: The people on the Nethership love and adore Pirilika. They will fight for her and do her PR while she's fighting in Hinomoto. Fuji himself enjoys working under her, but he'll never admit it out loud.
  • Broken Aesop: Invoked and Defied - at the end of Chapter 14, Pirilika is roped into a speech where she "understands" the end of true Bushido is a Heroic Sacrifice...and midway through, she starts ripping it a new one, pointing out that living to die is a horrible existence and that if this is what the villains are thinking of when they see "good" as toxic, they are completely right to do so. She ends up breaking the game in sheer moral disgust, saving Fuji in the process.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Pirilika may be an otaku that gets her phrases mixed up, but she is still the head of her own clothing company. A few times, Fuji is constantly amazed that her sense of capitalism and trends is brilliant. She's able to live a rich life because she is constantly making the right choices for her business.
  • Cat Girl: Ears and tail in her case, which gets odd as she also has the pointed demon ears. She inherited them from her father.
  • Drives Like Crazy: In the ending, she ends up causing Ewwdo Castle to get blown up for the third time because she was too excited about having a new Netherworld Ship and getting to the group's reunion that she mixed up the brakes and accelerator and crashed.
  • Dropping the Bombshell: While declaring her intent to personally kill Canonline, and her frustration with the army of Shirofune getting in the way, she lets it slip that Canonline is her mother. The group finally realizes she's not just some airheaded otaku tourist, she came to Hinomoto to stop her mother's atrocities without realizing the full scope of them due to hearing rumors of her parents having suddenly becoming monstrous tyrants in Hinomoto. After the battle she also clarifies that Opener is her father. Most of the group had their suspicions due to her looks and occasional odd behavior, only Yeyasu was completely floored by this information.
  • Dumb Blonde: Subverted. She's blonde, naive, and tactless, but her naivety is primarily due to having Popcultural Osmosis rather than actual awareness of Hinomoto's culture. She's actually a fashion and math whiz, and she's extremely good at sussing out how the people around her think, even if her idealism causes it to interpret it in the most favorable way possible. She's never been present without a plan, either.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's blonde and nothing but a friendly and kind woman, if a bit naive.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She's similar to Rutile in that she's not fully demon. In her case, however, her mother is human while her father is a demon. They're Canonline and Opener.
  • Identical Stranger: Early on, Higan comments that Pirilika looks a lot like "her" and you're eventually led to believe she was talking about Canonline; however, Pirilika also happens to look like a blonde cat-eared version of Fuyou, Fuji's mother and Mugai's wife. The resemblance is enough for Mugai to have a minor Freak Out when she just calmly tries to talk him down instead of kill him and mistakes her for his dead wife.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Has a knack for finding the exact wrong words to say, such as when her attempted negotiations with Penne fall through when she declares that she'd "love to rescue you from your humble frugality!"
  • Like Brother and Sister: She quickly develops this kind of friendship with Fuji.
  • Malaproper: It's a Running Gag that she'll try to utilize various Hinomotonese and pop culture expressions only to mangle them, sometimes completely incomprehensibly, before getting corrected. At least once she even catches herself, only to "correct" it into yet another mistake.
  • Otaku: Introduced as a 'Hinomoto Otaku' who loves the concept of bushido and everything to do with Hinomoto's culture... as depicted in media.
  • White Mage: Subverted. Pirilika is supposed to be the game's designated healer of the main group as her starting job is a cleric instead of an archer. However, she doesn't learn any healing spells on her own and she has horrible range without equipping a staff. She only fulfills this role in story when she obtains Zenryou Yoichi. Even then, it's better to leave the magic and healing to Yeyasu during gameplay.
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: Pirilika is not amused with how Chapter 14 ends, to say the very least. Fuji dies to save Ao, the dialog box bluntly proclaims the end of Disgaea 7, Part 3, Chapter 14, instead of a Next Episode segment, and she screams that she won't allow the game to end like that. Then Pirilika is forced to give a speech about how she now realizes that to follow Bushido is to go to your death and his was an amazing and courageous one worthy of praise anyway, and she lashes out once more, complaining about how killing yourself isn't a good thing and if that's what Bushido really means she'll kill it. This allows her to tap into the Zenryou Yoichi's power and revive him... By threatening to spend the 100,000,000 Hell she owes him on a bunch of ukiyo-e.

    Ao
Voiced by: Riona Imaizumi (Japanese), Kimberley Anne Campbell (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drpg_ao_artwork_1.png
An odd, emotionless girl known as the "Ice Fang Princess" whom has been wreaking havoc all across Hinomoto. For some reason, she refers to herself as Fuji's daughter.
  • Advertised Extra: While listed as one of the main characters, Ao generally only sticks around for a scene or two before disappearing for chapters at a time. She doesn't join the group as a playable character until the post game.
  • Become a Real Boy: At the end of the first Postlude chapter, she becomes a true demon after Celestia removes the excess of souls in her body and recognizes her as one.
  • The Berserker: Her fighting style. Absolutely vital to use this against her in order to win.
  • Dynamic Entry: This is almost always how she shows up, violently blowing something up. Crimson Dark gets the worst of it twice.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Making Fuji upset is a good way to set this child off. You do not want to get on her bad side.
  • Glass Cannon: Her evility makes her the most lethal axe user in the series (even more than Red Magnus), but also makes her the most fragile axe user in the series.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: She looks and acts like a young girl but she's incredibly powerful thanks to her status as a living Infernal Weapon.
  • An Ice Person: Her title of Ice Fang Princess isn't for show. Aside from learning Ice magic, her Hell Mode skill can freeze a target.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Despite being an axe user, she's incredibly fast. She'll actually be able to hit her targets while most likely killing them in one hit.
  • Mind Hive: Ao is a living weapon composed of numerous souls, much like Suisen, Fuji instinctively created in a desperate attempt to save Mugai's students as he killed them all. Celestia helps these souls pass on and make Ao a full demon, with Ao noting she can no longer hear their voices any more.
  • Personof Mass Destruction: Wherever she goes, Ao will destroy and/or kill whatever she lands on.
  • Secret Test of Character: The postgame has Celestia put her through one to see if Ao would recognize her crimes, atone for them, and mature from the experience. Because she was able to, Celestia recognizes her as a demon and allows her to live.
  • Secretly Dying: Her body is unstable and Ao's been in pain for a long time as a result. Her love for Fuji is what kept her together for a while but she comes dangerously close to dying near the end. Fuji nearly sacrificing himself for her stabilizes her body and later with Celestia’s help, she becomes a full demon.
  • Super-Strong Child: Is known to be excessively powerful for someone of her age. It comes with the territory of being a living Infernal Treasure on the level of a Founding Weapon.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Ao desperately wants Fuji to hug her and say he loves her which she unfortunately knows he cannot do without killing himself in the process thanks to the Empathy Killer curse on him.

    Ceefore
Voiced by: Rina Kitakawa (Japanese), Lisa Reimold (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d7_ceefore.png
Known as the Chivalric Thief, Mouse Girl, she seeks the Founding Weapons to regain her memories.
  • All the Other Reindeer: When she lived in Celestia, she was isolated from everyone else due to her ability to see the souls in others. Nitra was the first person to approach her despite the rumors and they hit it off.
  • Aura Vision: As her memories return, she gains the ability to see the souls of others. Suisen in particular disturbs her, due to the sheer number of souls in him.
  • I Am Who?: She's not actually a demon, but an angel. Thanks to her amnesia, she was unaware of this and just disguised her ears and wings for safety the way the village elder in Sardemon World told her to without ever asking why. After this revelation she can change between forms at the Dark Assembly.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: From her first appearance onwards, she makes a big show of being deceptive and backstabbing, but always ends up helping the party or even extolling The Power of Friendship anyway. Because she's actually an angel, not a demon.
  • Living Lie Detector: Due to her ability to see other people's soul, she is able to deduce if someone is lying to her or not on top of determining the type of person they are. This naturally allows her to excel in gambling.
  • Meaningful Name: Ceefore, C4. The girl LOVES explosions.
  • Moral Myopia: Cheerfully dismisses her betraying Fuji and Pirilika as inevitable and just part and parcel of being a demon, but is legitimately shocked beyond belief to learn that Sea Again wasn't on the up-and-up with her.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Even before regaining her ability to see other's souls well, she immediately picks up that something is wrong with Suisen. She also bluntly informs Sea Again that she can tell just how hopelessly corrupt his soul is.
  • Otaku: A self-described "weapons otaku" who forges an immediate Commonality Connection between herself and Pirilika, citing how they should stick together and support each other.
  • Pyromaniac: She really loves fiery explosions. She also occasionally huffs gunpowder to calm down, it even being one of her possible deployment quotes, and even seems to have a slight case of pyrophila on top of it as she is visibly and audibly aroused following the explosions of her aptly named Ecstasy Bomb skill.
  • Signature Laugh: "火火火", pronounced "Heeheehee" but the way it's written she's laughing fire. The English version has her laugh as "fififi". Similarly she has a Signature Deep Breath of "火———破———!" sounding like "Heeeee Haaaaa" but written "Fire———Destroy———!"

    Yeyasu Edogawa
Voiced by: Takuma Terashima (Japanese), Zeno Robinson (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drpg_yeyasu_artwork_1.png
The head of the Edogawa family, whom has ruled Hinomoto for generations. Holder of the Demonic Staff, Tokugawa Tenge.
  • Bad Liar: It's established early on that Yeyasu cannot lie to save his life. The group usually humors him when he attempts to lie. So when Partyasu decides to force Yeyasu to betray the group and lure them into a trap, Yeyasu thinks that his lie will easily be exposed and is shocked that his cousin decided to make his lie come true, but not for a good reason.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: From Weiyasu to Yeyasu.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Yeyasu almost decides to bail on the group the moment he has the opportunity but after being reminded of how Pirilika was the only one to treat him nicely and with respect, something he hadn’t experienced in a very long time, he decides to stick with the heroes.
  • Benevolent Boss: Post-game, he re-organizes the Shogun structure and hires back any of the previous enemies who are out of a job after Mugai's defeat. Only Tenbuyer and Joe Doe refuse the offer and swear to assassinate him. Everyone else happily takes their job back and work to rebuild Hinomoto. They are rewarded with days off at the onsen with drinks.
  • Black Mage: He's the main spellcaster in the group focusing on wind and star magic. He also happens to have a unique healing spell that restores a huge amount of HP on top of raising the defense and resistance stats.
  • Butt-Monkey: He is rarely treated with any respect by anyone, and usually ends up on the humiliating end of any situation he's involved in. Even when they first fight him as an enemy, Fuji and Pirilika find themselves surprised that this jackass is their Starter Villain. Once he gets his character development, the game tones down the abuse thrown at him.
  • Break the Cutie: While the game has it's fun making his life miserable, his backstory only adds to the pile of hidden trauma he has. He was forced to surrender to Opener once they took his little brother hostage. He was forced to watch his father be executed for his defiance. Mugai then made sure Yeyasu's reputation was dragged through the mud to the point where his people want him dead. Combine that with how the other shogun physically and verbally abuse him, his self-esteem and self-worth took a hit.
    • It gets to the point where Tokugawa Tenge stops responding to him after he loses all hope and tries to repeat into himself. He gets better due to Fuji's prep-talk.
  • Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp": During the DLC event to recruit Laharl, it's revealed he showed up to challenge the local Overlord and is deeply confused as to how Hinomoto doesn't have one. Turns out they just call them Shogun here and Yeyasu's it, not that he's in charge anymore thanks to Opener.
  • Conditioned to Be Weak: Fuji insists that Yeyasu is a lot stronger than he gives himself credit for. Yeyasu was stated to be strong enough, smart enough and brave enough to be able to battle the Demondore with his father and lead an army to do so. The only reason he couldn't do that was because Ikki was taken hostage. Mugai would then subject him to a lot of psychological abuse from forcing him to watch his father be executed to making sure he never got updated on his little brother's condition to dangling his authority over his head despite having no power to stop him. Over the years, Yeyasu convinced himself he was cowardly weakling and forgot everything that made him who he was before the tragedy struck.
  • Death Seeker: It turns out that during his time partying, he was hoping someone would kill him. His desire to fight back against Opener and his desire to die as a failure clashed and left him in a state of uncertainty. Only near the end of the campaign does he admit to Fuji that he was hoping that when he was originally taken hostage that he would just be killed when all is said and done. He's glad that he got over it.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He tends to open his mouth first without giving what he says any thought. One of his more suicidal acts is him telling Ao to call him darling... while Fuji is nearby.
  • Dirty Coward: He is well aware that he is anything but a badass, and is quick to advise retreat or beg for protection whenever it looks like he's about to be beaten up. He gradually becomes a Cowardly Lion over the course of the story. Then it turns out that he was always capable of being a badass but due to the pressure and abuse that was thrown at him after being forced to surrender, Yeyasu forgot how capable he used to be.
  • Disappointing Older Sibling: He views himself as such But Suisen never blamed him for what happened. Although, Suisen does get annoyed with his brother when he starts falling into his flirtatious personality.
  • Distressed Dude: Repeatedly embraces the role, both in an episode preview and whenever he spots somebody who might be able to help him.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: He is often addressed or referred to as "Shogun" combined with an insulting word that starts with 'S', "Shogun Stupid" being the most common. One of the casino guards goes as far as calling him "Shithole Shogun".
  • Emotional Powers: Turns out Tokugawa Tenge responds to Yeyasu's state of mind. Despite being a cowardly, useless shogun who had fallen from grace, he was still able to use his staff on Fuji and Pirilika. He may have gotten it stolen but he's able to use it immediately. Only when the reality of how he has lost everything he holds dear does his staff stop functioning.
  • Foil: Much like Pirilika, Yeyasu is a Sheltered Aristocrat who has no earthly idea what life in Hinomoto is like for anyone who isn't privileged. But while she's a hopeless idealist whose image of Hinomoto is heavily shaped by pop culture, he's more just plain hopeless. Not to mention deep in denial.
    • He and Fuji are both victims to the same antagonist, but how they handle the aftermath of the abuse is different. Fuji attempted to revenge by creating Ao, realized he was no better than his father and eventually told her to leave so she can do whatever she wanted. He then became a drifter trying to come to terms with his past (and fail miserably). Yeyasu spirals downward after the death of his father and kidnapping of his brother. Too scared to actually stand up to the man who destroyed his family and took everything from him, he turned to partying as a way to escape the reality of the situation refusing to come to terms with his past.
  • Grew a Spine: Post character development, Yeyasu stops running away from his problems and decides to face them head on.
  • Handsome Lech: Yeyasu is a shameless flirt, so much so in fact that even his "I" is "orepippi" a cross between the usual "ore" and "karepippi", which is a slang term to refer to a boyfriend. And then you find out that not only is he unable to actually go beyond pretty words, but it's also part of his facade.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Played with. When he met Opener for negotiations, he saw a kind man that really loved Hinomoto and its culture. He doesn't understand how someone that kind could end up tricking him and taking over Hinomoto. Everyone except Pirilika think that Yeyasu was simply tricked by his acting. It turns out Yeyasu was right as Opener was being possessed by Mugai by the time he decides to take over Hinomoto and taking his little brother hostage.
  • Househusband: Despite his original high ranking in the Shogun, Yeyasu already knows how to cook, clean and do laundry. Fuji surprisingly compliments him after Yeyasu curses his horrible luck of ending up a slave boy to the Nethership.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: The heroes are shocked to learn that Yeyasu, the disgraceful partying playboy, used to be a competent leader who was beloved by his people before Opener invaded Hinomoto. By the present, Yeyasu is outright loathed by the people who once loved him for his disgraceful behavior and don't hesitate to follow any orders to kill him. Which was exactly the point of Mugai's plan. He couldn't just kill Yeyasu at the beginning. He had to ruin his reputation first so the populace wouldn't object when he came in to replace him as the Shogun of Hinomoto after he defeated Opener.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Regularly harasses the women he pays to keep him company, and pulls this on Pirilika when he appears to have the upper hand against her and Fuji... though it's heavily Downplayed by his exact proposal being that he wants to exchange romantic letters with her.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Uses the Tokugawa Tenge to pull one of these off in his first confrontation with Fuji and Pirilika.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Once he snaps out of his depression, he's finally able to tap into Tokugawa Tenge fully. As he swears to his people he will never run again, the game pans to a serious image of him.
  • Manchild: Immature, lazy and has no self-restraint when it comes to spending money for video games. Given the death of his father, the kidnapping of his little brother the loss of his title as rightful ruler, Yeyasu probably regressed enough to not be able to take care of himself to an extent.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: After losing his family and his country, Yeyasu dove deep into the party life. The thought of losing something important to him again terrified him so much, he partied and surrounded himself with women to get his mind off of the painful reality he was in.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: To an extent. He's aware that he has fallen from grace and how Hinomoto and everyone's way of life has fallen apart around him. He chooses to remain in denial. In his own words, if he can retreat into his mind, he doesn't have to think at all.
  • Prone to Tears: He cries at the drop of the hat.
  • Puppet King: Yeyasu was kept alive for the sole purpose of still representing Hinomoto. The goal was for his reputation to tank over time and eventually get rid of him, but Yeyasu couldn't do anything even with the title that was forced onto him after his father was executed.
  • Rightful King Returns: Once he gets his character development and his shit together, it becomes clear that he starts returning to form the person that was destined to rule Ewwdo. By post-game, he officially returns as the Shogun of all of Hinomoto.
  • Sad Clown: Once he finally opens up about his past, it's obvious that he uses the party persona to run from his problems.
  • Skewed Priorities: When the group ends up being accused of being criminals by Mugai, Yeyasu's first thought is how he's not going to be able to hang with the Maiko girls anymore. Fuji calls him out on this while they're being chased by Hinomoto soldiers.
  • Smug Snake: Prone to Evil Gloating whenever he thinks he's got the advantage, only to panic when things don't go his way.
  • Starter Villain: As the local shogun of Ewwdo, where Pirilika initially lands, he is the first "real" boss the protagonists face. In typical Disgaea fashion, he joins the party after his defeat.
  • Stepford Smiler: Type A. He lost his family, his reputation, his honor and his pride as a demon but he pretends that everything is okay.
  • Squishy Wizard: Insane amount of SP, INT and RES, but horrible ATK and DEF. If positioned incorrectly, he can die as quickly as he can with killing his enemies especially with the Jumbofication mechanic.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Of all the weapons, Tokugawa Tenge gets a special mention. All Yeyasu has to do is order someone to listen to him and they are trapped by his staff. From there, he can order them to do anything he wants. Yeyasu is too nice to actually go for extreme things such as ordering someone to kill themselves even though this is brought up by his cousin to be one of his best tools. What stops the staff from being overpowered is that weapons like Kanzan Musashi can dispel it with relative ease and the emotional state of the wielder. The staff is the only weapon that stops working when Yeyasu's mental state is at an all-time low. Gameplay wise, Yeyasu can control enemy units up to five spaces and can get them to attack each other, heal and support him and line them up for other allies to kill them easily.
  • Virgin-Shaming: Many of the female NPCs comment how despite constantly badgering the ladies, he never actively goes beyond flirting words. The succubus NPC calls him out on it and questions his sexuality. Fuji is ashamed of this information.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: His fight at the end of Chapter 2 introduces Jumbofication and is surprisingly difficult as the player likely hasn't build a team to survive his attacks at this point, not helped as he starts the fight by jumbofying.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Its subtle but Yeyasu resents being compared to his father. In his eyes, there was no way for him to ever be as great as him. Come the postlude, Suisen tells him that their father was always proud of him and how he was their star. Yeyasu still finds it difficult to believe given the expectations placed on him by his people.
  • Workaholic: By post-game, he takes his job as Shogun more seriously. When the group reunites after months of the main campaign, Yeyasu is relieved to finally get a day off because he's been spending every minute trying to rebuild Hinomoto and helping his people.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: He's on the receiving end of one of these from Suisen, who had followed him when he tried to sneak away from the group after getting his Tokugawa Tenge back because there was a 99% chance that it would happen. He laughs at the fact that Suisen thought there was even a 1% chance he'd stay with the group, before realizing that Pirilika was the first person in a long time to actually show him any respect and repays it by returning to the group to see her mission through.
    • A few chapters later, Fuji pulls him aside and tells him that he'll never be able to protect anything by trying to keep things exactly as they are and that, as the Shogun, he needs to be the kind of person that can rally the people to the point not even Opener could stand against him directly if he has any real desire to save his people and his brother.
  • You Killed My Father: He can never forgive Mugai for executing his father.

The latest warrior to inherit the title of Zesshosai, she got bored with mastering the sword and took up spears instead.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Higan has a very fit body with a large bust and is also considered to be very beautiful by Yeyasu.
  • Ass Shove: Apparently a preferred tactic of hers. Just ask Crimson Dark, following his revival he'd gladly inform you of the absolute importance of keeping your butthole closed up tight. She almost does it to Yeyasu too were it not for Pirilika's timely intervention with pancakes, and makes regular threats of it toward him or anyone standing in her way.
  • Big Eater: Higan claims to require 1 billion calories a day to maintain her physique. She's able to bankrupt Pirilika, who is capable of buying whole Netherworlds if she wanted, in a matter of days due to her eating habits (though as Fuji then says, Yeyasu buying games in bulk probably didn't help either).
  • Blood Knight: Higan's greatest love is for sugar, but a close second is gratuitous violence.
  • Cool Big Sis: Serves as one for the younger party members. Her relationship with Fuji can also be seen as a big sister/younger brother instead of master and apprentice.
  • Crutch Character: Higan joins up at level 40 when you're intended to be around level 20, with an S rank and 50 levels in Sword Mastery and a B rank with 20 levels in Spear Mastery giving her a wide variety of skills at her disposal and a decent statistical advantage over your other characters. While nothing's stopping a player from raising her up just as much, she's a bit hindered by her Evility, which reduces her stats by 25% and locks her out of using Swords, meaning any character that grinds a bit in the Item World to catch up to her in levels is likely to outclass her. Toward the end of the game she drops this Evility in favor of another that instead cuts damage from Monster type units in half, while also gaining a second that adds an additional 2 spaces to her reach and 5 counter attacks while equipped with a spear.
  • Duel Boss: Her fight at the end of chapter 4 enforces this as the map is covered by Lonely Geo Panels, forcing the player to only bring out one unit to fight her at a time. Though you can bring another unit to stand on the Base Panel and play support or use ranged attacks.
  • Horrifying the Horror: While her attempt at abusing Mugai's Resurrective Immortality to keep them trapped in an endless cycle of death ultimately failed, it was sufficient in convincing them to back off and simply send minions after the group instead while they focused on achieving their goals instead of risking a continued confrontation where she may succeed.
  • Humble Pie: In the Carnage Dimension Postlude, Higan is easily pushed back by a Prinny of all demons that berates her for her arrogance and lack of dedication to the title of Zesshousai. The Prinny is her master Rekka Zesshousai, so it's not a surprise that she would lose and the party has to jump in to help her deal with other Carnage Overlords. She's far from pleased with herself after spending most of the main game as a reliable ally.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Her unique skill Higan-Ryu Retsugoutemporarily amplifies her stats to offset her Evility and allows the use of Sword skills. She stops holding back for real halfway through Chapter 12. The fight in question strongly encourages using only her and is a complete Curb-Stomp Battle in her favor, as she starts it able to immediately make use of her Infernal Treasure, allowing her to make use of Higan-Ryu Retsugou twice on the way over to the boss before making use of Higan-Ryu Ougi: Retsukazetsushou to one shot him.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She is easily among the most... well-endowed characters in this game.
  • My Greatest Failure: When Mugai lost his wife, he went on a rampage. She saw his downward spiral and hesitated to put him down. When she failed and learned of all the problems that would later occur in Hinomoto, she stops using a sword as punishment for her actions.
  • Parental Substitute: She served as one for Fuji when he was younger, after the deaths of his parents. Unknown to him is that she did not take him in on a whim as he assumed; she was a close personal friend of his parents and even trained together under the previous Zesshousai, Rekka, who also happened to be Fuji's grandmother.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Overlapping with Shut Up, Hannibal!, she quickly shuts down Sea Again's own speech toward Fuji. Fuji slacking off one day may have set off a chain of events that led to the death of his parents and Hinomoto being conquered by Opener, but he was a child and has had to live with that guilt for the rest of his life and is actively trying to fix what little of his mistake can be fixed. Meanwhile, Sea Again just gave up and threw in his lot with Opener for the chance to make Fuji's life hell and eventually kill him, threw away every principle he ever stood for, and ultimately his own body in exchange for one more chance to lash out at Fuji instead of ever doing anything productive with his anger.
  • Red Baron: Zesshousai is a title, and only Hinomoto's mightiest swordsman is fit to use it. As Higan currently holds said title, some characters refer to her exclusively with both name and title as a show of respect. She takes up another, Tenjou Tenge Shinra-banshousai which is essentially declaring herself the mightiest being in all creation, after deciding to stop holding herself back.
  • Super-Speed: While her Infernal Treasure, Banji Tadakatsu, is active she is capable of acting twice, or three times after it upgrades, each turn. When making use of Higan-Ryu Ougi Retsukazetsushou, she move so quickly time seems to stop behind her, with even the lightning left in her wake being frozen in place before it all explodes at once at the end of the attack.
  • Time Master: The Banji Tadakatsu gives her some control over the flow of time, allowing her to reach speeds faster than light or to cause certain events, such as an attack, to repeat indefinitely.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: A humorous example. Higan is a beautiful woman whom Yeyasu has admitted to being attracted to and she’s fully willing to marry him when he asks nearby girls if they would marry him. The only caveat is that as her husband, he would have to feed her as much as she wants. Which immediately makes Yeyasu turn down the offer since he knows how expensive her food bill is.

    Suisen
Voiced by: Maki Kawase (Japanese), Anne Yatco (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drpg_suisen_artwork_1.png
A cyborg holding the title of Foreseeing Magistrate. Utilizes incredible intel-gathering skills to predict future outcomes.
  • Always Accurate Attack: Suisen is able to grant 100% accuracy to his allies if they stand adjacent to him allowing him to fix accuracy issues on units who would normally struggle to hit an enemy. He himself will gain 100% accuracy when he goes into hell mode.
  • Big Brother Worship: As Ikki, he is shown to idolize the grounds his brother walked on. Even when he was taken hostage, he doesn't blame his brother for his circumstance.
  • The Comically Serious: Because he's just learning what it's like to interact with a group of friends, Suisen will often miss the point of their banter and either correct them with a matter of fact statement, or ignore the punchline entirely (Pirilika messing up her sayings).
  • Cursed with Awesome: Noticeably, upon learning the truth that he is Ikki, Suisen is in no real rush to turn back to normal in contrast to just wanting his memories back of his family. He even tells Fuji post-game how he has gotten so used to his robotic body that he considers staying like this. Considering how weak he was when he was a normal kid, he probably thinks staying a robot will allow him to be more useful to his brother.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": After realizing who he once was, he requests that he not be called Ikki but instead has the group continue to call him Suisen. Ikki is merely his core soul, but there are many in him so he feels it's not right for him to take precedence over the rest. That said, he does occasionally use that name himself when being deployed from the base panel after that point in the game.
    Suisen: Ikki Edogawa heading out!
  • I Owe You My Life: Says this to Fuji after he saves him from dying at the hands of a Kurofune. Fuji vomits blood as a response.
  • Little Brother Instinct: Once you know that Suisen is Ikki, it makes sense why he gets antsy at the idea of his older brother being hurt. While Yeyasu shows just as much vigor in protecting his little brother, its Suisen that takes the blunt of many attacks for him.
  • Mature Younger Sibling
  • Phlebotinum Rebel: The first of Canonline's living weapons, Suisen is much less obedient toward her than Shirofune and Kurofune. Ikki's soul and his Undying Loyalty to Yeyasu driving him to protect his brother played a part in this.
  • Reforged into a Minion: Ceefore quickly notes that he seems to have a mass of souls in him, rather than just one. It is later revealed that this is due to how Canonline created him, forcing countless souls into a single body to produce a powerful living weapon. The core soul is that of Ikki, Yeyasu's younger brother.
  • Taking the Bullet: He throws himself in front of Kurofune's attack in order to protect Yeyasu. He almost dies for it if not for Fuji being able to heal Infernal Weapons.
  • What Is This Feeling?: When he sees a vision of Yeyasu dying, he doesn't understand why he's so determined to prevent it from coming true. He finds out it's because of brotherly love, as Yeyasu's littler brother Ikki's soul is his core soul.
    • A more humorous example is what he feels around Ceefore. He sees her giving her odd looks and he wonders if it's love. Fuji tells him that he is feeling genuine fear.

Antagonists

    Demmodore Opener
Voiced by: Kenyū Horiuchi (Japanese), Aaron LaPlante (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/demmodoreopener_page_with_white_background.png
The Demmodore whom took over Hinomoto. The main antagonist of Disgaea 7.
  • Affectionate Nickname: His Given Name Reveal is caused by Cannon Line referring to him as "Gatty", and Suisen asking for clarification.
  • Big Bad: Opener is the man who killed Hinomoto's greatest hero, Mugai, conquered the Netherworld Cluster, and works to stamp out any sense of honor among its people.
  • Demonic Possession: He's been possessed by Mugai long before the events of the games through the Infernal Treasure he wears.
  • Given Name Reveal: After the main story refers to him exclusively as Opener or the Demmodore, the second postgame chapter reveals that his full name is Gatling Opener.
  • Good All Along: Opener was never evil and actually wanted to convince the Hinomoto Netherworld to open its borders out of admiration of its culture. He wasn't himself by the time of the game.
  • Like Father, Like Daughter: He shares his daughter's love for Hinomoto and likewise has trouble speaking Hinomoto's native language. He also shares her idealism, to the point he believes he can still become friends with Mugai if he just talked to him in the past, only stopping because his wife convinced him it wasn't possible.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Like his daughter, he has cat ears hidden under his hat.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Opener doesn't actually bother to do much of anything after conquering Hinomoto and didn't even seem to have a plan beyond taking over and making it a law that everyone must make everyone else miserable, leaving it to his Magistrates to actually manage the various Netherworlds. This is because Mugai needs a rebellion to occur to help sell his story of coming back from the dead for his plan to work out. Actively ending any real opposition, rather than leaving it to a relatively incompetent Quirky Miniboss Squad, would not allow him to inflict the Killing Humanity curse on all of Hinomoto.
  • Power Fist: His Infernal Treasure is the Zesshousai Mugai, named in honor of the hero himself, and is capable of causing complete helplessness in anyone it touches. It is in fact Mugai himself, and is actually the one in control of Opener's body.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: The second postgame chapter, Reminiscence, has him use the Infernal Sanctuary to go back in time and try to talk some sense into Mugai before Mugai enacts his evil plans. However, he's prevented from doing so by Cannon Line and the party, out of concern that he'll accidentally destroy the future in the process.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: His duel against Mugai was just a friendly sparring match to him but his victory against the Swordmaster led him to the Infernal Sanctuary and drove him off the deep end, especially after Mugai’s wife died.

    Canonline
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2024_01_13_at_61030_pm.png
Voiced by: Shizuka Arai (Japanese), Amber Lee Connors (English)
Opener's Demonic Weapon Magistrate whose fearsome intellect has led her to create devastatingly powerful Infernal Treasures.
  • Back from the Dead: Celestia revives her as a angel, despite being a demon, because her knowledge on Infernal Treasures is paramount in their quest to turn them back to normal and release the souls inside them.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: From "Canonline" to "Cannon Line".
  • Beyond Redemption: Faced with any other horrible person, Pirilika can find some reason that they ended up that way and hold hope for them. She sees nothing but pure evil looking at Canonline, and outright declares her intent to kill the woman. Tragically, Canonline is the one person who does actually have a reason for her actions. Pirilika just doesn't learn of it until she's beyond redemption for a completely different reason.
  • Evil Matriarch: One of the first things she says after being introduced is that she wouldn't even hesitate to kill her own child, Pirilika, if they opposed her. Considering she actively commits genocide on the people of Hinomoto to produce living weapons, the threat is quite convincing. Ultimately she does hesitate to kill Pirilika, which leads to her own death, and had been planning her own death and the downfall of Mugai at the same time.
  • Forced into Evil: Like Fuji, she's bound by the Empathy Killer curse. Lacking any sort of demonic endurance, the curse drives her to truly vile acts to continue living.
  • The Heavy: While Opener is the Big Bad of the story, Canonline is the character the group comes to blows with the most as she is responsible for the creation of the Shirofune and Kurofune living weapons.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: The second she so much as hesitates to kill Pirilika and consider her words instead, the Empathy Killer curse begins to take its toll on her. Opener doesn't even wait for it to do the job, and kills her from behind. Celestia, however, revives her as an angel so she can properly atone for what she did..
  • Knight of Cerebus: Once she directly confronts the party does the darker elements of the story start to pour out.
  • Pathetically Weak: In the post game Cannonline herself says she would easily lose to even a lv1 Prinny, and Nitra claims Cannonline broke her wrist swatting a mosquito
  • Rerouted from Heaven: She's the one doing the rerouting. Aside from wiping out the people of Yeyasu's Netherworld to fuel the creation of her living weapons, she's been abducting the souls of the dead before they can be reincarnated to put to use for the same purpose.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her daughter Pirilika took mostly after her appearance-wise.
  • Taking You with Me: After her apparent death, she lies in wait for Mugai to separate from her husband, latches on to him, and detonates a bomb she hid in her own body that had enough power to even kill one of her Kurofune. Unfortunately, Mugai's Resurrective Immortality ensures that all she accomplished was finishing herself off.
  • The Starscream: She makes excellent use of this as Loophole Abuse against Mugai. By his logic demons are supposed to be constantly backstabbing each other for more power, thus her secretly saving lives with the intent of killing Mugai in the end does not set off the Empathy Killer curse.
  • The Unfought: Before you are given a chance to fight her for her bow Mugai kills her before she even gets a chance to hesitate.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: She destroys Sea Again, right down to his very soul because the mere possibility of him betraying her put an end to his usefulness. In her own words, he was a defective tool and you dispose of tools that can not be used. Except he was still very useful to her, allowing her to orchestrate Mugai's downfall even after her inevitable death.

    Big Bull
Voiced by: Michitake Kikuchi (Japanese), Imari Williams (English)
The Protection Magistrate charged with guarding Ewwdo.
  • Affably Evil: Big Bull is incredibly polite to Suisen even though they're on opposite sides.
  • Back from the Dead: He's revived thanks to the Gero Onsen Netherworld's Haunt Springs.
  • Groin Attack: On the receiving end of one from Higan at the Haunt Springs.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: The moment that Opener is defeated and Mugai takes control of the Shogunate directly, Big Bull obeys his new leader's orders with this justification.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: The only person prior to the game's story who had ever been able to harm him was Higan, and is otherwise regarded as being completely invulnerable. Fuji is quick to cut him down after obtaining the Kanzen Musashi, as the sword is capable of cutting though anything. While the first fight against him enforces this, making it so only Fuji can really harm him, his second fight sees him as merely extremely durable in general and Higan even tells him his main flaw is getting complacent and letting people get better than him.
  • Palette Swap: Of the Male Armor Knight class.
  • Recurring Boss: You fight him a total of five times with the last one being post-game.

    Sea Again
Voiced by: Hiroshi Watanabe (Japanese), Stephen Fu (English)
The Ocean Magistrate whom rules Hinomoto's waters, Sardine World especially. Fuji and he share a history.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: From The Again to "Sea Again".
  • Deader than Dead: Just as Higan's speech starts getting through to him, as well as Fuji's invitation for him to come at him for another rematch any time, Canonline takes it as him considering betraying her and Opener and destroys his soul completely, meaning there will never be a chance for him or any of the numerous souls bound to the Shirofune body to see reincarnation or be brought back in the Haunt Springs. However, that was all a ruse on both his an Canonline's part. When she "obliterated" his soul core, she was actually teleporting it into another Shirofune and, knowing of Mugai's plans, had him work in secret to make it so the others could not follow an order to execute Opener.
  • Did You Actually Believe...?: Mocks Ceefore's naïveté for believing he'd ever honor any kind of deal with her, pointing out that she was stealing from the Shogunate in order to pay him off.
  • Fallen Hero: Once a highly regarded and respected compatriot of Mugai, he now works for the Demmodore and happily helps oppress Sardemon World.
  • Foil: He's every inch as arrogant and smug as Yeyasu, though he holds more actual power compared to the nominal shogun. He also knows significantly more about what's going on in Hinomoto, and is the one who gleefully informs Yeyasu that he isn't useful to them anymore. Naturally, his overconfidence contributes to his downfall, as he's subjected to his own Humiliation Conga.
  • Full-Conversion Cyborg: After repeatedly failing to kill Fuji, he lets Canonline turn him into a custom Shirofune for more power in hopes of finally killing him. It's still not enough, and the act is a major part of Higan's own "The Reason You Suck" Speech toward him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While he takes immense pleasure in bursting Ceefore's bubble, he also highlights her Moral Myopia in the process. Not that it makes him any less of a Hypocrite.
  • Palette Swap: He's a green-haired version of the Ranger class. Later, as a Shirofune unit, he's a white-colored version of Suisen.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives one to Fuji, laying the blame for Opener's invasion on him due to Fuji slacking off on his training one day, which led to him encountering bandits who in turn killed his mother when she tried to save him. The death of his wife led Mugai to become a broken man and fail to stop Opener.
  • Recurring Boss: You fight him a total of four times (multiple times within one chapter) and the last time is post-game. The first two time, he is in his ranger class the latter times will be when he becomes a Shirofune.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Post-game, See Again is noticeably a lot nicer to Fuji when the group sees him again. Of course, he still ends up fighting them when Fuji accuses them of kidnapping Ao.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Does not take getting tricked well, especially when Yeyasu points out that he already knew that he didn't have his Tokugawa Tenge anymore and still fell for it.

    Sakoora
Voiced by: Mirei Kumagai (Japanese), Courtney Lin (English)
The Song Princess Magistrate who controls Hinomoto's music industry. Known to do everything in excess to maintain her innocent image.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: From Sarkura to Sakoora.
  • Palette Swap: She's a pink-haired version of the Valkyrie class.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: She never actively goes after the group as she spends more time doing her idol job than anything else. The tournament was only meant to boost her popularity (getting rid of the group was only an added bonus) and she was made to bide time by Yubana if she wanted to get into the hot springs.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Yeyasu helped her become a famous idol and expects that that will make her the most willing to help rescue him from Fuji's group when he was still considering going back to working for Opener. She's actually one of the Magistrates most intent on killing him. Come post game, the two of them have made up.

    Crimson Dark
Voiced by: Wataru Tsuyuzaki (English), Christopher Wehkamp (English)
The "Total Victory" Magistrate whom eradicates any threats to Ewwdo.
  • Back from the Dead: Like Big Bull he's revived in the Haunt Springs, and now referring to himself as Ultimate Crimson Dark. He ends up being unable to do anything other than get mocked for the name before Ao shows up and blows him away.
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: Chapter 4 spends a lot of time hyping up Crimson Dark as the main enemy and boss you'd face at the end of it. He's killed off screen after an unfortunate encounter with Higan Zesshousai, who steps up as a Duel Boss due to the Geo Effects limiting you to only a single active character at one time.
  • Butt-Monkey: After his brief bit of being hyped up in Chapter 4, the rest of the game makes it very clear he exists only to suffer one humiliation after the next and never see a proper battle. By the time the story wraps up he gets encountered by Higan Zesshousai, blown up by Ao making an entrance twice, and then shot in the back with a cannon by Tenbuyer when he finally tries to help Fuji. The post game story has him get taken out by Fuji at the start of the scene due to being suspected of kidnapping Ao, leaving him unable to participate in the Wolf Pack Boss fight against all remaining enemy Magistrates.
  • Informed Ability: His Character profile in the Data Shop notes him to have a strength rivaling thousands, and was Mugai's favorite disciple. Sadly the player never gets to see any of this action, as Butt-Monkey and Running Gag demonstrate.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Pirilika and Ceefore refer to his "Ultimate Crimson Dark" name as "Helmet Crimson Dark" and "Marionette Crimson Dark" respectively. Higan takes it even further, calling him "Alphabet Question Mark".
  • Palette Swap: While this is standard fare for the series to do so with generic units, both when they rank up and with special ones that see a role in the story (like most of the other Magistrates), it rarely gets applied to former major characters. Here, there's a fella called Benikage, who abandoned his old name and prefers to be called Crimson Dark, who happens to resemble Void Dark a great deal, albeit in red and black. Fuji calls him out on it, telling him that even if he is a fan of that legendary Overlord he shouldn't be trying to imitate him.
  • Properly Paranoid: After his unfortunate encounter with Higan he is obsessed with literally protecting his butt. The third time he shows up, he's even taken to making sure every soldier under his command does the same, telling them to stay vigilant and keep their buttholes closed tight.
  • Running Gag: Crimson Dark will always be defeated, and rather humiliatingly, before being able to fight the group.
    • He's not even safe when assisting the party in the final chapter. He gets taken out by a cannonball by Tenbuyer before he's even able to have official dialogue with Fuji.
    • In the Carnage Postlude, he [[spoilers: loses to a Prinny and gets a sword stuck up his butt again.]]
  • The Unfought: The party will never get a chance to fight him no matter how many times he shows up.
  • The Worf Effect: A hilarious example that benefits the player. He's supposed to be one of the most dangerous members in the Shogunate, but every time he shows up, he always gets defeated in a humiliating manner by someone stronger than him and that person will almost always be the boss instead.

    Yayaka
Voiced by: Yuki Kyoka (Japanese), Alexis Tipton (English)
The Gambling Magistrate whom controls Hinomoto's Gambling Industry.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: While outwardly projecting a calm demeanor, her real self tends to surface whenever someone pisses her off.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: She and Ceefore hit it off after she beats Yayaka in her own game at gambling and demon shoji. Every encounter after that has them bouncing off ideas on how to make things more interesting in the Gambling Industry including introducing games like hot potato.
  • Palette Swap: She's a blue-haired version of the Maiko class.
  • Rags to Riches: Was originally a resident of Sardemon / Sardine World, whom clawed her way up to becoming one of the magistrates.

    Tenbuyer
Voiced by: Takaaki Torashima (Japanese), Caleb Yen (English)
The Resale Magistrate controlling the resale industry in Hinomoto.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: From "Ten Buyer" to "Tenbuyer".
  • Freudian Excuse: Actually has one, which Pirilika accidentally gets right. He had a past as a freak show attraction, but Mugai freed him, earning the moth's Undying Loyalty.
  • Hypocrite: In the final chapter of the main story, Pirilika points out that Tenbuyer is one for helping Mugai spread Empathy Killer throughout Hinomoto because he empathizes with Mugai's plight.
  • Meaningful Name: His name could also be read as Tenbaiya, meaning reseller or scalper, which is exactly what he does, on top of buying things in excess to make it so people have to go through him to get them. His name carries the same meaning in two languages.
  • Palette Swap: He's a recolored Winged Warrior.
  • Shady Scalper: His whole thing is buying up anything people might want, then selling it for drastically higher prices. This leads Pirilika and Ceefore to hold a deep personal grudge against him for how such things make life hard for otaku. Oh and he has Yeyasu's Tokugawa Tenge that they need to get back.
  • Undying Loyalty: In the first postgame chapter, Tenbuyer and Joe Doe are the only two former Magistrates still trying to fulfill Mugai's dreams, ironically due to the empathy Mugai had shown them in the past.
  • Villains Out Shopping: In the item world during post game, Tenbuyer can be found selling toys normally without a scam involved. He surprisingly enjoys seeing the look of joy on Ao and Suisen when he gives them toys they've always wanted.

    Yubana
Voiced by: Shizuka Arai (Japanese), Sarah Anne Williams (English)
The Magistrate overseeing Hinomoto's Haunt Springs at Gero Onsen.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Being a Succubus, her dialog is obviously full of innuendos. Shortly after meeting the group, she gives them stereotypical invitation for sex, except a recently revived Big Bull finishes the line for her.
Yubana: Would you like a bath? Or maybe dinner? Or maybe....
    Big Bull: A. BAT. TLE~~~!?
  • Con Artist: Her master plan was to invite the group for a free stay at a hot springs inn, only to then reveal that the bath package wasn't included and it costs ten million per person to actually use the springs.
  • Palette Swap: She's a recolored Succubus.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: She's not exactly interested in Fuji's group as much as she is with ripping them off with the hot-spring deal. When Pirilika actually pays her, she backs off almost immediately.

    Akuma
Voiced by: Fumitake Ishiguro (Japanese), Kevin K. Gomez (English)
The Ping-Pong Magistrate whose won the Hinomoto Championship 3 years in a row.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Or rather in his case, A Demon Named Demon. This is something Pirilika immediately complains about when he introduces himself.
  • Berserk Button: He is the Table Tennis Magistrate and will absolutely not stand for anyone saying that sounds like a pointless and overly specific job. In his words, when you think of Hinomoto you think of onsens, when you think of onsens you think of table tennis, therefore he IS Hinomoto himself.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: He absolutely insists on the fight against him being a table tennis match. What this means mechanically is that the battlefield is divided by a high wall with a limited number of bombs to throw at him while he, in a considerable departure from the series' norms, is capable of doing the same to you. Of course you could always just take Higan's suggestion and throw someone over and murder him instead of playing his game, but that loses you some of the fight's bonus rewards.
  • Odd Friendship: He and Fuji apparently hit it off quite well over table tennis. His second appearance even has Pirilika wondering when the two became such good friends.
  • Palette Swap: He has the appearance of the Martial Artist class with a blue outfit.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He doesn't care about Fuji's group at all. He only cares about ping-pong. Hell, he becomes fast friends with Fuji once its revealed that he knows how to play the game well.

    Partyasu
Voiced by: So Okubo (Japanese), Ricco Fajardo (English)
Yeyasu's older cousin, now known as the Subjugation Magistrate.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: From Paripiyasu to Partyasu.
  • Clashing Cousins: He's Yeyasu's elder cousin and has completely sided with Demmodore Opener, even going so far as to threaten the life of Yeyasu's little brother in order to force him to fall in line.
  • The Generic Guy: Unlike the rest of his family, he uses a recolored samurai portrait instead of being unique, and Yeyasu states that he has a generic face.
  • I Have Your Wife: After Yeyasu firmly sides with Fuji and Pirilika, Partyiyasu threatens his little brother Ikki's life in order to get him to betray them.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After losing against Yeyasu a second time, Yeyasu is able to snap him out of his self-deprication and convince him to switch sides.
  • Humiliation Conga: He almost successfully breaks and kills his cousin, but the moment Fuji and the others give him a prep-talk, his plans not only go wrong, but Yeyasu regains the power of Tokugawa Tenge. When he loses, he asks smug and says how he'll never tell them where the citizens are...only for his cousin to force the info out of him. Yeyasu then makes him run around the block butt naked before making him act like a dog. Yeyasu only stops because the group has to remind him that they have people to save.
  • It's All My Fault: He blames himself for Gachiyasu's death and Ikki's abduction (and eventual Infernal Treasure conversion) and believes that it's impossible for him to fix these mistakes.
  • Palette Swap: Of the Male Samurai class.

    Nitra
Voiced by: Tomoe Shirayuki (Japanese), Morgan Garrett (English)
A resident of Celestia whom came to Hinomoto to investigate missing souls.
  • Big Bad Friend: She's Ceefore's best friend and attacked her, causing her amnesia, for trying to stop the creation of Infernal Treasures after finding out they used demon souls to make them. She quickly sells out Celestia to Opener, becoming the Soul Flow Magistrate responsible for expediting Canonline's collection of souls in hopes that she'll have a breakthrough and learn how to use angel souls as well.
  • Freudian Excuse: Unlike many others, she remembers how she died a brutal death at the hands of Mugai because she rebelled against him. This installed a strong fear of death in her. Joe Doe takes advantage of this by using his illusionary base powers to make her relive her moments of death in order to control her through fear.
  • Ironic Fear: She's supposed to be an angel who guides souls, yet she is terrified of death.
Nitra: That's right. I'm an angel, meant to guide departed souls, and yet I'm scared of death. Isn't that ridiculous?
  • I've Come Too Far: She knows that what she's doing is wrong and acknowledges that she is stained with evil. But she can't bring herself to stop after all this time.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Near the end of the main story, despite betraying Celestia and joining the villainous shogunate, she avoids severe punishment by promising to buy Hinomoto figurines for the Archangel and making amends for her actions by performing good deeds.
    • In the post game, she, along with the Archangel, pulled some strings to reincarnate Cannon Line as an angel despite her forcibly converting innocent people into Infernal Treasures while under Mugai's control, and works with her to free both the souls of the dead from the infernal treasures and those inside of Ao.
  • Mortality Phobia: She's terrified of dying. Not just herself, but anything dying. The group claims she actually just fears change. Regardless of the truth, this motivates her to go so far as to sell out Celestia to Opener and Canonline, hoping that they'll one day learn how to use angel souls as well and give everyone unchanging immortal bodies like Suisen, Shirofune, and Kurofune, whether they want it or not.
  • Multi-Melee Master: When you recruit her post-game, she has the benefit of coming with her weapon mastery being all S-A with the sole exception being swords at C.
  • Past-Life Memories: She remembers her life as a human, prior to dying and becoming an angel. She was previously Kotora, one of the best archers in Hinomoto, and trained under Mugai only to be brutally murdered by him for showing compassion to others and defying him when he turned to evil. Constantly reliving her traumatic death, both from her own memories and Joe Doe's illusions physically recreating it, is what drives her Mortality Phobia.
  • Self-Deprecation: She knows what she's doing is wrong, but she fears death too much to resist going against Mugai a second time. Even though she helped Ceefore through her issues, inwardly, she was beating herself up for the same thing, thinking herself not worthy of being an angel.

    Joe Doe
Voiced by: Taiki Yamashita (Japanese), J. Michael Tatum (English)
The Leader of the Thirteen Magistrates. Nobody has ever seen him in person.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: From "Joeh Dou" to "Joe Doe".
  • Demonic Possession: His other power is to move to any unoccupied, or weakened, Infernal Treasure. He uses this to take over Ao, who was dying due to her defective body, and later Opener by using Doe's original form as a prototype Zesshousai Mugai, since Mugai himself had returned to his true form.
  • Genius Loci: He's a massive living weapon fused to Ewwdo Castle, kept hidden by his illusions. When he reveals himself, the main body is a massive eye on top of the castle with tentacles running down over the rest of if. He's not Joeh Dou, he's Jouedo. (The Top of Edo).
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He's particularly cruel to Ao since Mugai treated her with empathy while Joe didn't receive such treatment.
  • I Know What You Fear: This is his power, using illusions to physically recreate his victim's worst fears and traumas. His power is greatly diminished when his would be victims have support from someone else at hand, able to remind them that what they're experiencing is not real.
  • Living Weapon: The final encounter with him in the main story reveals that his true form is an Infernal Treasure gauntlet; specifically, a prototype of the Zesshousai Mugai that managed to gain sentience and desired to prove to Mugai that he could still be useful.
  • Mr. Smith: Fitting his anonymity, his name is based on "John Doe".
  • Too Dumb to Live: Ao effortlessly blew up Ewwdo Castle at the beginning of the story. Openly announcing that you're keeping her "hostage" inside the newly rebuilt castle is not the wisest of ideas. Especially not when said castle is your own body. Cue Fuji yelling at Ao to get outside right now, and Joe violently exploding.
  • Undying Loyalty: In the first postgame chapter, Tenbuyer and Joe Doe are the only two former Magistrates still trying to fulfill Mugai's dreams, ironically due to the empathy Mugai had shown them in the past.
  • The Voice: Among all of the Magistrates, Joe is known for never revealing himself to others and merely speaking from some unseen location. Because he is the location, or at least was fused with it at the time.

Others

    Pii-chan
Voiced by: Kenyū Horiuchi (Japanese), Mick Lauer (English)
A cream-colored Prinny who works as Pirilika's secretary.
  • Connected All Along: Pii-chan is actually Opener's older sister (brother outside of Japan) and asks Fuji to save him when Mugai prepares to execute him.
  • The Jeeves: She's Pirilika's personal secretary, and is quite proficient at managing her boss's business, the Netherworld Ship, setting any traps, legal or otherwise, for anyone in Pirilika's way, and can be found working her way alone through the Item World in her down time.
  • She's a Man in Japan: Inverted, as Pii-chan is instead male outside of Japan.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: After Fuji endangers Pirilika in order to extort her into paying him 100 million HL for his protection, Pii-chan tricks him into signing a contract ensuring he'll be paid after helping Pirilika achieve her goals. They're very polite and matter-of-fact about it.
  • Unusual Ears: Cat-ears, just like Pirilika. Considering Prinnies usually lack ears, they are indeed unusual.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Pii-chan has a very deep manly voice, so Fuji is understandably surprised when it's revealed that she's a female prinny. (Though this only applies in the original Japanese.)

    Spice and Sugar
Voiced by: Tomo Sakurai (Japanese, Spice and Sugar), Brittany Lauda (English, Spice), Ellie Dritch (English, Sugar)
The duo known as the "SpecOps Angels".
  • Big Damn Heroes: When the heroes are trying to escape from Mugai's base, the two appear and brought a teleporter to facilitate their retreat to the Nethership.
  • Goldfish Poop Gang: The pair exists solely to get in the group's way due to jumping straight to a fight rather than just explain themselves. Even during post-game, they jump at the chance of a fight despite the very real problem of a war between the Netherworld and Celestia breaking out.
  • No Indoor Voice: Spice is known to constantly shout.
  • Overt Operative: The two let it slip pretty quick that they're special agents from Celestia, and completely deny that they just did so, though it takes a while longer for the group to learn that it goes any further than "investigate Prinny-nappings".
  • Palette Swap: Spice is a recolored Mecha Girl, and Sugar is a recolored Slumber Cat.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Spice is a hot-headed bright pink Mecha Girl, Sugar is a laid back light blue Slumber Cat. The two are completely inseparable though.

    Mugai
Voiced by: Akihiro Tajima (Japanese), Rich Brown (English)
A famed Swordmaster of Hinomoto. Was defeated by Opener before the story began. He's Fuji's father.
  • Abusive Parents: He wasn't the nicest father to Fuji, but when his wife died, he subjected Fuji to a lot of physical abuse that he likes to call "tough love". He also forced the Empathy Killer on his son, so he would stop feeling positive emotions.
  • And I Must Scream: Higan attempts to subject him to this, abusing his Resurrective Immortality. Her Banji Tadakatsu's special ability allows her to tamper with time and space. While she usually uses this just to achieve Faster-Than-Light Travel during her Limit Break, she can also set it to repeat an event infinitely. She stabs him straight through the heart, and sets that action to repeat, causing him to die almost instantly every single time he revives as his heart tears open once more. After a few minutes of that, he's had enough and breaks the cycle by simply pulling out the spear.
  • Bad Boss: Once he lose his heart, he started killing anyone who defied him including his disciples who trained with Fuji and Kotora.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Goldion/Bloodis. Both are Netherworlds renowned warriors that were recognized for their kindness, were the teachers of the protagonists in their respective games, and were thought to have been killed by the main villain. The difference is their roles in their respective stories: Bloodis is the brainwashed right-hand man of Void Dark and is forced to do his bidding while Mugai is the true perpetrator behind Opener's reign and inflicted himself with Empathy Killer so he can fulfill his ambitions without restraint.
  • Doting Grandparent: A sign that he’s not as evil or empty of empathy as he claims to be is shown by how he genuinely loves his granddaughter Ao. Even though it’s not enough to stop him from using her for his plans.
  • Evil Plan: Step 1: "Die" fighting Opener. Step 2: Possess Opener, turn him into Hinomoto's conqueror. Step 3: "Come back from the dead" and defeat Opener. Step 4: Announce the intent to broadcast Opener's execution to all of Hinomoto. Step 5: Use the broadcast to inflict the Empathy Killer curse on Hinomoto, ensuring everyone becomes ruthless monsters, as he feels demons should be, or dies off, as he feels people who have any shred of decency should.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Despite everything he did, his granddaughter Ao still loves him and begs for her grandpa not to die.
  • Freudian Excuse: Losing to Opener and being offered a hand of friendship was humiliating enough to Mugai, but witnessing the suffering souls of the Infernal Sanctuary and his wife sacrificing herself to save Fuji from bandits pushed him over the edge and made him fully commit to the idea that the bushido way Hinomoto demons followed was nonsense and that real demons ought to be devoid of empathy and think only of themselves to avoid eternal suffering.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: Happens to him In-Universe, with Fuji complaining that people who view his father as some sort of saint who tried to save Hinomoto are fools who never met the man. In reality he was a man quite frustrated with the Netherworld Cluster's obsession with Bushido, viewing it as a massive weakness, and even subjected Fuji to the Killing Humanity curse in order to make him "strong".
  • Hypocrite: On multiple occasions that Fuji loves calling out.
    • Claims that demons are too empathetic and need to forget about these positive emotions. Fuji says he's the one that is obsessed with empathy to the point that he uses it as the excuse to force his ideas on others. He also cursed himself with the Empathy Killer to stop himself from feeling bad despite the fact he himself could never get rid of these emotions.
    • His love for his granddaughter is genuine. He claims she's a tool as a means to an end, but he not once abused or shouted at her (until the very end), but he praises her, hugs her and gave her the Yoichi Founding Weapon as a gift for obeying him. Joe Doe is jealous of this genuine love that Mugai shows to Ao than him.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He's the true instigator for the events of the game, trying to stomp out honor and empathy from the Netherworld Cluster through possessing Opener.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: By giving Ao the Yoichi Founding Weapon, he accidentally gave Pirilika the means to save Fuji from death after he nearly dies from his curse.
  • Pet the Dog: While it was part of his plan, him giving Ao the Yoichi Founding Weapon helped alleviate her pain and slowed the degradation of her body.
  • Posthumous Character: Mugai's death is what allowed Opener to take over Hinomoto unopposed, and much of what is known of him only comes from other people speaking of what they remember of the man. Subverted when it's revealed that he very much so survived his fight with Opener, who was actually just a tourist who wanted to have a friendly duel with the man, and possessed him to make him the conquering tyrant he's now known as.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Higan attests that Mugai used to be the kindest demon she ever knew much to Fuji's disbelief, knowing him as a remorseless killer. She's right, but Mugai decided to seal away his own kindness.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His obsession with destroying empathy and bushido in the Netherworld Cluster stems from the belief that it will save demon souls from suffering in the Infernal Sanctuary for eternity and allow them to pass in peace.
    • It is implied this whole lack of empathy thing was spurred on more by the Carnage Dimension threatening to invade Hinomoto countless times. He has stopped them every single time further confirming his own bias.

    Fuyo
Voiced by: Tomo Sakurai (Japanese), Stephanie Southerland (English)
Fuji's Mother, and the love of Mugai's life. She was the daughter of the previous Zesshosai, Rekka, and owned an Inn at Gero Onsen.
  • Call-Back: Her power to create the Infernal Treasures references the Magichange Mechanic of Disgaea 3.
  • Living Weapon: The final fight against Mugai reveals that she's the dominant soul of the Kanzan Musashi, the Infernal Treasure sword that bonded with Fuji.
  • Morality Pet: She was Mugai’s, being his wife and the only person who Mugai could never wield a blade against. She would have successfully convinced Mugai not to go through with his plans after his lost to Opener but her death soon afterwards caused Mugai to go along with them and more.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Lost her life saving a young Fuji from several bandits, which caused Mugai to head down his path.

    Gachiyasu
Voiced by: Shitan En (Japanese), Yong Yea (English)
Former head of the Edogawa family, and Yeyasu's father. Was friends with Opener before the game's events.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: He was a renowned ruler that nobody could hate. Fuji and Higan had good opinions of him when he was still alive. Yeyasu wanted to be like his dad and Ikki also loved his dad. Even Partyasu loved his uncle.
  • Doting Parent: Gachiyasu adored both of his sons. He had extremely high hopes for Yeyasu and speaks proudly of him when he isn't around.
  • Generation Xerox: Looks exactly like his son Yeyasu, to the point where the group thought he actually was Yeyasu for a second.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: While he can use magic, he's a sword user like the rest of the family.
  • Humble Hero: Unlike his son, Gachiyasu was humble to a fault.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Yeyasu's self-esteem issues stem from his father's own self-deprecation.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: While his eldest son did inherit his charisma and leadership skills, Gachiyasu was much more dignified than his perverted playboy son.
  • Palette Swap: His portrait is identical to Yeyasu's, but with blonde hair and clothes with a white leopard print. When fought in the second postgame chapter, he also shares Yeyasu's spellcasting talents.
  • The Paragon: His unique skill Charisma increases stats of allies by 30%. It shows how effective and popular he was as the ruler of Hinomoto.
