YMMV / Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Suisen underreacts to the fact that he was taken hostage as a kid, killed and then his soul placed into a robot with his memories erased and only sees it as an inconvenience outside of being told that if his core is damaged, he will stop functioning. In fact, learning that he was Yeyasu's brother Ikki Edogawa shocks him more than learning about his horrible fate.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • The new Maiko class introduced is an annoying enemy to deal with, especially when fighting her as a male character. She has a 30% chance of inflicting charm on your male unit after she gets attacked. As long as you have a healer with Espoir, you should be fine. However, in the Item World where to get bonus maps often involve having male units only, it becomes surprisingly difficult to deal with her. She can even give Valvatorez a run for his money by effectively disabling his Hell Mode.
    • The Zombie Maiden is another new class introduced. She is able to revive one time per map after her HP falls to zero. On the enemy side, it means that she can revive herself and counter. This becomes obnoxious when you're in the Item World either trying to defeat the floor in a certain amount of turns, or when you're trying to subdue it as an Innocent where it takes at least two hits. They're also ridiculously fast and are able to dodge attacks, which essentially allows them to survive even longer.
    • Once you're in the Carnage Dimension, the Male Armor Knight will now have a skill that stops you from killing him in one hit. This skill specifically prevents you from killing him at any point on the HP bar. Combine this with high Defense and Resistance boosts, and it becomes difficult to get rid of him before you lose your stage clear bonuses.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Jumbify completely trivializes most maps once introduced, particularly ones that rely on killing a single specific character; giving your chosen jumbified character the ability to land powerful attacks with immense AOE anywhere on the map means you've got little reason to interact with the game's traditional combat strategies. Just throw a few low level characters to their doom to charge the Rage meter, have your strongest turn into a giant and proceed to wipe the floor with entire groups of enemies. True, it only lasts three turns, but since there's no limit to how many times you can use it, you can just immediately reactivate it and clean up any stragglers.
    • Valvatorez is considered to be the best DLC character in the game. He keeps his ability to heal 20% of his HP after every kill and it synergizes with his Hell Gauge going up based on killing his enemies, but Valvatorez only really needs to kill two enemies in order to activate Hell Mode. He is then able to move up to three more times around the map while killing enemies in his wake, and is able to keep moving as long as he doesn't kill an Innocent or a Board (these aren't considered enemies due to their yellow HP bar). His Hell Mode still works when Jumblified, meaning he can now kill a large amount of enemies and be able to effectively clear a map with relative ease. What's more is that a Maiko, whose most useful unique skill is allowing an ally to act again, is able to refresh him to let him continue the streak if he failed to kill an enemy during his rampage. Finally, one of his unique Evilities grants him huge stat bonuses and HP restoration...and all it requires is one sardine. No wonder Fenrich has such unwavering loyalty towards the vampire!
    • Usalia may have been nerfed in comparison to her status in Disgaea 5 (one of the most broken characters ever made but goes under Difficult, but Awesome), but what she lacks in power, she makes up with her Hell Gauge. Usalia's hell gauge simply maxes out every character's hell gauge regardless of requirements on the map. This means that Valvatorez can activate it immediately without having to kill two enemies and having a dancer refresh him to start the sweep. This also means characters who rely on taking hits or doing team attacks to fill the gauge will also max out (allowing characters like Suisen to be a dodge tank for 3 turns, Pirilika can now have her full heal and revive ready on the spot instead of having to heal for five turns and Higan can sweep with Valvatorez).
      • Its not even that hard to make Usalia as lethal as her earlier incarnations. She may not have Precious People, but its really easy to replicate the havoc Precious People can cause. The trick is to give her Laharl’s Strong Personality common evility, then give party members you want traveling with her Tactical Guidance (from Yeyasu below). Half the main cast (Yeyasu, Suisen, and Prilika) are excellent candidates for “Usalia buddies” powering up both her tankiness and her killing power, all with relatively cheap common evilities.
    • For the base roster, Yeyasu has the most utility of the group. Because he's the first one to unlock his Demonic Weapon of the group, he's able to gain a second evility that boosts the stats of all allies on the map by 20% (and will gain another skill to add 25% to ATK/INT to ally units). Combined with other evilities that he can learn from other classes and he makes an amazing Rally bot. His Hell Mode also works similar to Seraphina's Revenge Mode from Disgaea 5 where he can control any unit on the map up to 5 spaces. This can even work on certain bosses in the item world (abit a low chance). Unlike Seraphina, Tokugawa Tenge is not locked to one gender and it doesn't matter if Yeyasu is at a lower level than the enemy as it has 100% hit rate. You can then line the enemies up in any formation you want to kill them, make them attack each other or have them use support/healing skills on your party. Combined with Yeyasu's Human Shield, any enemy that tries to attack him will force the brainwashed enemy to take the hit (thus allowing him a higher chance to survive on the enemy phase). As long as Yeyasu isn't fighting a Gazer or the enemy isn't standing adjacent to an Alraune, Yeyasu is the magic sweeper who buffs and heals his allies when needed. His common evility Tactical Guidance for a mere 2 points acts like a reverse Precious People (adjacent allies +20% attack power instead of +20% per adjacent ally), allowing for lots of targeted damage buff shenanigans, especially when given to multiple people. With proper placement, 1 person with Tactical Guidance can give up to 4 people a stack of Precious People.
  • Low-Tier Letdown:
    • Fuka continues the trend of not being all that useful. Her skills have been re-worked and reduced her range. Her Jumblify ability grants invincibility to everyone one time. The problem is Jumblify affects everyone on the map and Fuka's skill effectively benefits the enemy because the turn you activate it, the enemy units are the ones that get to take a hit followed by a free counterattack. Her saving grace is her Hell Mode gives her stats based on the amount of allies you have out of the base panel. The problem is many of the main units have similar skills and have better unique skills to benefit more and Fuka's accuracy continues to be as bad as before. Her hell gauge also goes up based on team attack. Axe users in general got the short end of the stick with Fuka being the only axe user in DLC.
      • She does pack a common evility that is immesely useful for ax users. Namely making Ao even more lethal than she already is.
    • Mao has been nerfed compared to his previous appearances. Being a mix attacker prevents him at being good with anything when the other protagonists from previous games are better at using a sword with a higher ATK stat. Mao's range has been reduced by a large margin where his strongest attack only hits one target (where all the other protagonists have a huge multi-target attack). His hell mode boosts the weapon stats by 50%...except the boost takes into consideration the rank of the weapon meaning if you have a lower rank weapon, the boost isn't as high as it could be and at that point, you'd be better off using the other protagonists who have higher base stats.
      • Star Gazer is worthy of notice however. It makes Yeyasu above significantly more deadly given his natural proficiency with star magic. Usalia gets double milage out of it, improving her already tanky nature and improving the lethality of her ultimate move.
    • Sicily and Bieko join at the same time in the 6th DLC, but Sicily is underwhelming in comparison. Both have the same role as a support unit but while Bieko specializes in her INT stat, Sicily prioritizes her RES stat. This is in conflict with how Sicily learns all the ice spells but not the healing spells but Bieko gets all the healing spells but not the elemental spells. While you can teach Sicily Tetra Heal, it doesn't change the fact that her skills don't synergize well like in previous games. All of her evilities that were great in previous games no longer work because they all rely on the Team Attack function. However, the Team Attack no longer shows up in the battle predictions and even though the skill says "it will always work", it just doesn't. For Sicily to enter Hell Mode, she has to join in on team attacks which goes against her role as a healer (Pirilika and Flonne both gain the gauge from healing) but combined with her unique skills not working the way it used to be, it means the chances of her ever achieving Hell Mode to assist is very low unless Usalia steps in to give her a full gauge. Meanwhile, Bieko gets to fill her Hell Gauge by using magic (which will only take three turns to fill it up) and her Hell Mode leans into her offensive status elements while also being able to use her higher INT stat to heal more. Due to her lower INT, she's one of the worst healers of the major characters (because Pirilika may not qualify as a mage, but she at least has her Demonic Bow.)
      • Sicily’s main draw (being a fantastic tank) also took a hit with the nerf to her signature evility. The nerf is large enough to the point Usalia dethroned her as the best tank in the game.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Mugai may be the main antagonist, but he already crossed it in Fuji's flashback when he massacres all of his students in hopes that Fuji will close his heart. All this did was leave an emotional scar and the souls to be stuck inside of Ao as a result of Fuji's response to the incident. He also kills Cannoline in front of Pirilika at a moment's weakness all while possessing Opener on top of executing Gachiyasu in front of his son for daring to fight back against him. And to top it all off, he goes against his words and kills Ikki off-screen and has Cannonline use him for her experiment.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The fact that 7 is using 3D models like the previous game instead of returning to 2D sprites has already left some fans weary, though others are open minded.
  • That One Boss: Yeyasu in Episode 2 is notorious for being one of the most difficult Starter Villains Disgaea has to offer. This is mostly because of two things. First, you do not have access to the Item World so there is no easy grinding spot at this point of time. Second, the game introduces the new game mechanic Jumblification where a character enlarges themselves and get boosted stats on top of a wilder range for their attack. Because the game only gives you a few paragraphs before throwing you onto the map, you are forced to figure out which units will benefit the one v one. The problem stems from Yeyasu already starting out Jumblified and his ability has him increasing his defense by 5% per unit on his side. This means that his defense is inflated while in this state and it will take multiple hits to actually take him down. Yeyasu has no problem one-shotting the character you decide to Jumblify to fight him and their hit percentage will not be as great as his. Even if you do deal with Yeyasu, you still have to deal with his minions who are quick on their feet or incredibly tanky.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Team Attack is no longer shown in the battle predictions. Characters whose Hell Gauge requires joining in on an attack will no longer give obvious indications that they will join in. Even if you equip the Evility to make Team Attacks trigger 100%, it's still not guaranteed unless it's a normal attack.
